Cumberland Bird Observers

Bird-watching offers a host of benefits.

For example it gets people of many ages out into the fresh air; observers meet other people with similar interests to socialise and develop skills differentiating between colours, size, shape and behaviours; it develops skills in analysing calls and compares them with others from books.

A member of Cumberland Bird Observers Club this week reported seeing several Tawny Frogmouths in her backyard in Baulkham Hills.

People have also heard the loud calls of Koels and Channel billed Cuckoos. On a recent outing to the wetlands in the northern suburb of Warriewood, Bellbirds (Bell Miners), Whipbirds and Fairywrens were among 54 different species seen.

EIGHT YEARS after The Weekly Times and Ryde MP Victor Dominello campaigned to keep the former site of Ryde High School and surrounding Smalls Road playing fields in community hands, the mission is almost complete.

On Day 1, Term 1 of the 2020 school year, the ultra-modern, circular, purpose-built Smalls Road Public School will commence operation, initially catering for kindergarten students and from 2021, Years 1 to 6.

With the supply of recreational space struggling to keep up with growing demand, the successful campaign to save the Smalls Road Playing Fields is one that Mr Dominello will no doubt cherish and is one of three major achievements in his early days as MP for Ryde.

A front page editorial in the April 18, 2012 edition of The Weekly Times clearly spelt out the problem and the electoral consequences if it wasn’t fixed.

“A cash-strapped O’Farrell NSW State Government is hell bent on selling off so-called “excess” lands which should be retained for sporting and recreational use,” TWT’s Editorial announced.

“We must call on our elected representatives to consider the long time advantages and not just the short-term financial gain.

“Or pay the price at the ballot boxes next election.”

The Dominello/TWT campaign kicked off in early 2012 and by November 2013, Mr Dominello was able to declare victory for the community.

He announced that both the former Ryde High School site and Smalls Road Playing Fields would be kept out of developers’ hands, the latter leased to Ryde Council to ensure continued community access.

In late 2014, a community leader in the fight to save the Smalls Road Playing Fields and School Grounds told a Ryde Council meeting that the Dominello/TWT campaign had been crucial.

“When the school closed in 1986 the soul went out of the area and today we have the return of soccer mums,” resident Les Toemoe had told

councillors.

“Media support, particularly from The Weekly Times, saved this park and it is imperative to continue to save the park for future educational needs.”

With the initial campaign victory in the bag, Mr Dominello then faced an arguably more difficult task engaging the state’s education bureaucracy to ensure the community would also see delivery of a new school.

In mid-2015, as Mr Dominello’s methodical and disciplined efforts to build the case for a new school continued, Labor’s challenger for the seat of Ryde, then-Councillor Jerome Laxale, challenged Mr Dominello to have a new school built within four years.

“The Liberals have proven they have no plans for Ryde and instead of action, our local MP is only promising advocacy,” Clr Laxale told The Weekly Times shortly after his second unsuccessful state election contest with

Fight fire with fire, not water Dear Sir, In a furious firestorm with high winds, extreme temperature and big loads of dry fuel, water bombing is usually just wasting water and avgas.

In hot winds, water will evaporate quickly, embers will start glowing and blowing, and soon the fire will be raging again.

And with few dams getting built, and much stored water released to irrigate the oceans, where will they get the water?

Too often they will steal it from private dams, leaving prudent landowners with inadequate water in a drought.

Water can extinguish house fires, and protect homes and towns, but is useless for raging forest fires.

The only solution here is to fight fire with fire – back burning from the wide cleared tracks which should protect every park, forest and property.

The best fire insurance is to keep tracks and firebreaks clear and conduct regular cool-season burnoffs, especially in National Parks. And stop creating fire hazards by locking up more land.

Don’t blow money on more water bombers – we need more back-burning, more boots and tyres on the ground and more graded tracks.

And we should build more dams.

Waterfront rights under threat Dear Sir, Ryde Council’s recent announcement of proceeding with the Ryde Riverwalk extension signals a new and greater threat to all waterfront property owners.

The decision to build an over the water boardwalk between Bill Mitchell Park and Ross Street reserve in Gladesville is the start of council’s intention to build a boardwalk in front of every waterfront property in the Ryde LGA, with the properties in Pellisier Road between Dyson Street and Putney Park next in the gun.

Council seems disinterested in those properties having riparian rights to direct water access, with a bully boy attitude of “sue me if you like”.

In our part of the world, Mother Nature is in turmoil.

Drought and fire have us in their grip, and as I write, damaging storms gallop across the Sydney Basin.

This restless Mother Nature finds a suitable companion in Human Nature! * * * THE Australia-China relationship seems to be becoming fractious on several concerning fronts, with allegations and denials arguing with each other.

Aged Care in this country is itself found to be in need of significant therapy.

The Westpac Bank is in the spotlight as numerous breaches of Australia’s antimoney-laundering laws have come to light and heads roll.

Our political leaders are struggling to come up with a credible response to the challenge of Climate Change, ten years after nearly agreeing on a promising bi-partisan strategy which was scuttled in its infancy.

The above is merely an iceberg-tip of the restless spirit which shapes our world as we head into this Advent season leading up to Christmas. * * * THE Old Testament Prophet, Isaiah, had a dream that at some point all nations would come together “to the Temple of the God of Jacob” as he put it, and that in that great event, people would “hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles” and that “Nation will not lift sword against nation and there will be no more training for war.” (Isaiah 2:5).

This heart-warming hope, by all reckoning, seems to be nothing other than a fantasy, a pipe-dream that lives in a realm that is simply too hard to reach.

We look at the state of the world, its political, economic and religious divisions, and we find it easy enough to find someone to blame.

We can even look at our weather patterns and find a scapegoat there too.

We can take part in a kind of Goggle-Box or radio shock-jock program, critiquing the way things are and the people responsible.

At the end of the program, we find that nothing has changed other than the intensity of our frustration.

Slipping quietly through all this turmoil is the story of the birth of a child long ago in Bethlehem.

Somehow the birth of this baby still serves to

give us pause. As his story unfolds, we learn to see Love embodied in a way we never thought possible.

In Jesus we glimpse the possibilities for harmony that led Isaiah to pen his hopeful lines so long before.

We’ve even gone so far as to reckon we’ve seen the face of the unknowable God in the face of one of our own!

In this encounter, transformation becomes more than a mere fantasy.

Here we don’t require armies, wealthy politicians, religious or economic institutions to do the work for us. They’re probably more of a hindrance than a help. * * * THANKS to the amazing grace of Jesus’ presence, we ourselves are enabled to become agents for transformation.

We begin with the divisions within our own hearts which provide our most immediate challenges.

Then refreshed within by the love, mercy, gentleness and justice we find in Jesus, we are able to become agents for healing and hope within our families, work-places, churches and neighbourhoods.

We do this, not by preaching at or expecting people to turn into versions of ourselves.

Taking our lead from Jesus, God’s Word made Flesh among us, we simply allow our own graced self to speak. And Love is Born.

School choir sings carols at the Town Hall THE Bel Canto Choir from Marist Sisters College in Woolwich sang Christmas carols at the Hunters Hill Mayoral Christmas Party in Hunters Hill Town Hall last Thursday night.

Mayor Mark Bennett described the choir as “fabulous, absolutely beautiful” and praised people, groups and organisations who give their time and service to support the Hunters Hill Municipality.

CHRISTMAS is one of the ancient traditions of the Christian faith. In a recent homily The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney - Anthony Fisher OP – spoke about Christmas in a secular society that wants to pack away Christ when the festive season is over.

“The birth of a child is always a time for rejoicing,” Archbishop Fisher said.

“The great joy of the Christmas season is born of our celebration of the arrival of the Christ Child, the one who came to set us free.

“Around our beautiful city of Sydney, we see lights and decorations, hear carols and greetings and experience a general feeling of merriment among people.

“The angels’ carol of Glory to God in heaven and peace to people on Earth still rings true today.

“Christmas is a time for coming together with friends and family, for pondering words and dreams like peace, joy, love, and hope, for making new resolutions for the year ahead.

“Above all, they celebrate the birth of the Baby Jesus.”

The Archbishop said Christmas is one of the few occasions when the public expression of religious faith is tolerated.

“There are those in our society who want the same Baby we celebrate every December to be put away with our Christmas decorations, with no claim on the year ahead,” he said.

“A hard edged secularism would exclude faith, and the faithful, from public life and confine faith to an ever narrowing field of private life.

“The recently canonized Pope, St. Paul the Sixth, told world leaders that what the church asks of them is only liberty, the liberty to believe and to preach her faith, the freedom to love her God and serve Him, the freedom to live and to bring to men the message of life.

“In exchange, the church comes to heal humanity, he said, to transfigure it and fill it with hope, truth and beauty.

Club Eastwood doing something for the bush THE CURRENT drought is devastating the bush.

Vast areas of rural Australia are simply running out of water.

It’s heartbreaking for farming families, many of whom have been on the land for generations.

There’s no water for their animals, no water to run their farms. No hope.

It means that farming families are having to forgo things the rest of us take for granted such as regular showers and laundry. At times like this, it’s easy to feel helpless.

That is why Club Eastwood thought they should do something. General Manager Steve Colquhoun and President Ray Blunt decided that they would hold a Bizzo Sausage Sizzle on Saturday afternoons and raise funds for the drought.

The club would meet dollar for dollar for all the sales of the sausage sizzle.

Club member Trevor Henderson also got on board and supplied the

sausages from Pryde Meats at Top Ryde City.

Steve said that after raising $2500 he heard about the project Litres for the Land through Clubs NSW, so decided to involve the club.

Litres for the Land is a combination of local clubs and Radio 2GB coming together with Team Rubicon Australia.

The concept is simple.

Through club fundraising activities and public donations, millions of litres of water will be purchased and transported to the bush and provided for FREE to farms and families that need it the most.

Sourcing of water will be dependent upon the location.

In many areas, water will be purchased from the council through local water carters.

However, in areas where there are tight water restrictions the water will be sourced from outside of the lo-

cal government area and trucked in.

Team Rubicon Australia will be assessing, prioritising and providing the water on an asneeds basis and will be responsible for the planning, logistics and delivery of this project.

Team Rubicon is made up of Australian Defence Force veterans who specialise in disaster relief.

They are a registered Australian NFP organisation.

Clayton’s Heritage Study: Ignoring Ryde’s Civic Centre among flaws cited by councillors

By ANTHONY STAVRINOS CITY of Ryde’s purportedly comprehensive heritage study drew strong objections from the community over properties it identified, including some that council staff had exempted in writing a decade ago.

But two of the City of Ryde’s most experienced councillors have criticised the study’s failure to include one of the city’s most significant buildings, the Civic Centre.

Under normal circumstances, the study would have been an opportunity to investigate ways of preserving the solid, post-war civic centrepiece.

But it appeared the urgent need for a multi-mil-liondollar civic precinct redevelopment - a recurring ‘hot potato’ issue spanning many decades - had trumped the need for proper due diligence or for the community being given a say.

“If we’re serious about preservation of our heritage, the Civic Centre should have been the first cab off the rank,” said Independent Councillor Roy Maggio.

“Instead the study identified a number of properties of questionable heritage value, causing unnecessary heartache to their owners.

“And in what can only be double standards, council’s planners are going to stand by and allow the Civ-ic Centre to be demolished based on a bit of paper that says there’s a loose tile and some buckled carpet.”

So far, the justification for demolishing the Civic Centre has been a 2015 Safework NSW ‘improvement certificate’ citing those anomalies.

City of Ryde’s longestserving councillor, Sarkis Yedelian OAM raised the issue of how the Civic Centre had been overlooked in the study in early debate on the heritage study proposal and has consistently expressed scepticism over claims the Civic Centre was a public safety threat.

Clr Yedelian OAM said he had asked fellow councillors and council staff: “What about the Civic Centre? We are heritage listing everybody’s house without knowing anything about it.

“We know everything about the Civic Centre going all the way back to the sixties - why aren’t protecting that under heritage?”

“In general, I believe this (heritage) study was

“A lot of places were left out while others were unnecessarily put in.

“And the engaged consultants were never present at any council meeting to answer questions.”

Clr Yedelian had urged council staff to be proactive in making contact with affected residents who for various reasons - had not expressed a view on the potential heritage listing of their homes.

He said that small group of about a dozen residents shouldn’t be treated on the basis of failing to respond to a typical council letter sent by mail - “each of them should provide their wishes in writing.”

Clr Maggio and Labor Councillor Peter Kim said the fact that the ultimate outcome fell considerably short of its original aims suggested the initiative had not been properly considered or was flawed.

Emotions ran high as the controversial issue progressed through council, with council staff contacting police on three separate occasions over allegations of assault targeting the Labor/Greens bloc of councillors who initiated the heritage campaign.

A police spokesman told TWT no charges had since been laid.

Meanwhile, the defection of Clr Kim to oppose his party colleagues and defend his affected constituents meant the loss of the

Labor/Greens bloc’s numerical advantage, forcing it to negotiate an outcome with rival councillors.

“It shows a lot of integrity and courage - he put his constituents before his political party,” Clr Maggio said.

Clr Kim said it was now important to ensure owners of properties excluded from heritage listing “were not harrassed again” in future heritage studies.

“After the 2010 heritage study, people were promised their houses wouldn’t

be revisited by another heritage study and in 2019 we have,” Clr Kim said.

“So we need to ensure that their property rights are protected and protected for good.”

He intends to move a motion at a February 2020 council meeting that seeks to have Council investigate processes to enable permanent protection of property rights for those residents affected by heritage listing in the latest study before ultimately being excluded.

CITY OF RYDE Deputy Mayor Clr Simon Zhou has urged the Eastwood community to continue to work closely with the Ryde Police Area Command to prevent crime during the Christmas holiday period.

The Deputy Mayor said it has been and honour and a privilege to work with police on campaigns that include the detection of counterfeit notes in Eastwood and stealing from shops.

“The police have held workshops with the Chinese speaking business community and have had police officers in Eastwood to work with shop owners and other businesses to prevent theft,” he said.

“The strong message from the police is that the business community needs to be vigilant to prevent crime, particularly stealing from shops.

“With Christmas expected to bring extra people to Eastwood the

need for vigilance is especially relevant and I hope shop owners will follow the police advice not to leave cash registers unattended or leave a large amounts of cash where thieves can steal it.

“It is also important to ensure premises are secured if unattended and where possible guarded by security cameras.”

Councillor Zhou stressed the importance of reporting crime.

“At the workshops, a key message from the police has been to report crime as soon as it occurs because this significantly increases the likelihood of police capturing and arresting offenders,” he said.

“Where possible, a de-

scription of the offender and details of the offender’s movements can greatly assist police.

“The police deal with information with the utmost confidentiality and respect, with a strong commitment to keeping our community safe.”

He said it is also important for the community to keep up to date with new traffic rules and to respect changes to local traffic conditions.

“An important new law requires motorists to slow down to forty kilometres when approaching an incident that involves a police vehicle or an emergency vehicle,” he said.

ing your car doors when not in the car, even if it is only for a few minutes because it only takes a few seconds for a thief to strike.

“I also urge people not to leave valuables in cars where thieves can see them or to leave children or animals unattended, especially so in hot weather.”

Residents with poor swimming skills should also take care when at beaches or in boats and follow police and RMS guidelines at all times, he said.

“During the Christmas period when many of us take holidays, our police and emergency services will continue to work around the clock to prevent crime and help make our community safer,” he said.

“Our police and emergency services officers do an outstanding job but rely on us to not only to report crime but to do what we can to prevent it.

“It is my hope that we take extra care on the roads and that the Christmas holiday period road toll is lower this year.

“We can do our bit by being aware of road and traffic conditions, watch out for pedestrians and keep to the speed limit.”

Best solutions for our community

CITY OF RYDE Councillor Simon Zhou (Ind) has reaffirmed his commitment to continue to advocate for the “best solutions” for ratepayers.

In a Christmas message to readers of The Weekly Times, he spoke about cultural diversity and community unity.

“Just like you, I am a member of this diverse and vibrant community,” he said. “ Since being elected as an independent Councillor, my goal is always to be objective and only pick the best solutions for our community in Council.”

Councillor Zhou recently made headline news in The Weekly Times for his stand against rac-

ism and is known for his work to make Eastwood a safer place to live and work.

Outspoken at times, he was also been critical of councillors whom he perceives to have put politics before people.

CITY OF RYDE’S councillors struck a back room deal last Thursday night to adopt a new Heritage Conservation Area plan designed to please ratepayers for and against an original policy.

The deal will remove all proposed heritage listing on homes where owners objected to heritage protection and places heritage listing on homes in Denistone which the Denistone Action Group had urged the council to protect.

Liberal councillors Jordan Lane Chris Moujalli and Sarkis Yedelian OAM refused to join other councillors to broker the deal, which resulted in a motion put by Mayor Laxale (ALP) and Clr Trenton Brown (Lib) being passed by nine votes to three.

Councillor Yedelian AOM was scathing in his condemnation of how the deal was done, which will be regarded by some pro-heritage policy supporters as rewarding the aggressive speeches of the antipolicy group.

“Whoever cries like a baby gets fed, this is wrong, totally wrong,” Clr Yedelian said.

He believes the outcome was not fair on people who do not

want council heritage listing on their homes but did not speak against the proposed policy.

Mayor Laxale said the deal achieves his aim of protecting homes in Chatham Road and the Darvall Estate in Denistone as well as homes in Tyrell Street, Gladesville.

“This council has saved Ryde’s history,” he said.

“These reforms have corrected the poor heritage policies of the past and have placed strong protections on our most cherished items.”

He also defended the backroom deal that created the motion.

“It had to be a deal, we were on the verge of losing everything, it was either that or nothing,” he said.

“Because of it more than 300 items have heritage protection.”

Councillor Jordan Lane told The Weekly Times why he boycotted the deal.

“I am very much of

the view that transparency is an important part of democracy and this deal is nothing more than a select group of councillors picking winners and losers.”

People Power

For the owners of homes opposed to their homes being proposed for heritage listing the outcome is a win for “people power” and their staunch advocate Clr Roy Maggio lauded the deal.

“I commend all councillors coming downstairs (to a back room to broker the deal) and the only problem is that all the food was gone,” he told the council meeting.

Independent Clr Simon Zhou also defended the result.

“It proved that the Mayor and most Councillors listened to both sides of local community, took a community survey into account and were willing to make com-

promise,” he said.

“It was productive and all councillors present finally agreed to support the mitigated proposal suggested by Clr Maggio, which was the core content in the final new motion.”

Councillor Edwina Clifton (ALP) voted for the deal but made a personal plea to heritage home owners, who she believes are cusodians of heritage homes for future generations.

“I implore you, if you own a heritage home, please, please look after it, I beg you,” she said.

The Greens Clr Christopher Gordon voted for the deal but said he was extremely reluctant to do so, as he seeks wider heritage protection.

Heritage advocate Clr Trenton Brown told the council meeting: “This is a motion that does not bring happiness I can tell you,” he said.

itage Conservation Area policy had been “completely misunderstood” by antipolicy protestors but voted for the Laxale/ Brown compromise.

Councillor Dr Peter Kim (ALP) opposed to the proposed heritage policy from the outset and shed some light on why some Australians from an Asian background are among the most passionate anti-policy protestors.

“In certain cultures they do not want to live in a house in someone else’s memory,” he said.

“In Korean culture, they think it has a ghost.”

If the memory of past generations haunts some anti-heritage attitudes, the pro-heritage views of the next generation was put by brave 13 year old Denistone girl Jessica Ingham.

“You need to hear from my generation,” Jessica said.

“I did not realise how special my heritage home was until my friends came around and said Jess, your house is really special.

“But some people are being scared off

by lies and there are people who are just plain greedy and who do not care about my generation and who just want to live in mine craft boxes.”

The outcome of the vote will be sent to the State Government this week.

There is a State Government obligation on councils to protect heritage.

Heritage listed home owners will be eligible for council grants of $15,000 - an increase to the $5,000 first offered.

Heritage reforms endorsed Last week, the City of Ryde endorsed the most significant heritage reforms in generations.

Under the reforms, more than 300 items will have various forms of heritage protection. This includes three new heritage conservation areas, individual Federation buildings and Inter-War bungalows, public parks and street tree boulevards.

Council will also increase the amount of funding available from the Heritage Assistance Fund, which is designed to assist owners with the cost involved of repairing, restoring or conserving their residential heritage item.

The reforms balance the views of owners of significant heritage residences while also addressing wider community concern that heritage properties were not adequately protected.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the development of these heritage reforms. Each of you have ensured our most treasured heritage items will be protected and our history will be preserved.

Bushfire appeal I would like to thank the Federation of Korean Societies of Oceania and Lisa Youn Lee who have donated a combined total of $1,500 to the City of Ryde’s fundraising campaign for the Salvation Army Bushfire Disaster Appeal.

Donations to the appeal can be made via collection buckets located at Council’s Customer Service Centre, City of Ryde Library branches, the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre and Council’s North Ryde Office.

Money raised for the Bushfire Disaster Appeal will go towards supporting people displaced due to recent bushfires.

Rydalmere Park’s multi-million dollar upgrade in full swing

MAJOR works are underway on Rydalmere Park’s multimillion dollar makeover, including a state-of-the-art synthetic grass field.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer joined members of the Rydalmere Football Club to celebrate the start of a series of upgrades to the 6.4 hectare park and associated facilities.

“The projects outlined in the Rydalmere Park Masterplan, which was developed following extensive community consultation, will turn this significant asset into a space that meets the community’s changing recreational needs,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Community spaces and sporting facilities such as those at Rydalmere Park provide a valuable opportunity for people to connect with their neighbours, stay active and enjoy nature right on their very own doorstep.“ Among the improvements to the park is a $2.5 million upgrade to the northern playing field, jointly funded by the NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund and City of Parramatta Council. This field will receive a new synthetic grass playing surface, fencing and lighting to meet Football NSW National Premier League requirements. At a later stage, the two southern turf playing fields will also be upgraded.

Other works to the park will include the development of the former bowling club site for multipurpose use; increased vegetation, shade, shelter and seating; upgrades to recreational spaces such as the playground, multipurpose court and circuit path; and maintenance of existing amenities buildings.

Parramatta MP Geoff Lee said: “The $5 million commitment to upgrade Rydalmere Park is a great example of the NSW Government investing in local sporting facilities.”

Rydalmere Football Club president Peter Bacha thanked City of Parramatta Council and the State Government for making the long-awaited upgrade a reality.

“The upgrade to these facilities will allow us to compete locally at the highest

levels of the National Premier League competition and provide even more footballing opportunities for local kids,” he said.

As Parramatta’s population grows, synthetic pitches will become an increasingly important part of the mix in providing the local community with sporting and recreational opportunities.

Synthetic fields provide a consistent, durable and safe play-

ing surface that can be used seven days a week all year round – providing more capacity to accommodate increasing demands. Synthetic turf also requires less water than natural grass and addresses the issue of poor grass growing conditions due to hot, dry weather.

Rydalmere Park’s new synthetic grass field is scheduled for completion in February 2020.

DR Sushma Patel of Putney Dental Surgery presented a drone camera to the winner of the Lolly Jar Guessing Competition during the recent Putney Village Street Fest.

SMALLS ROAD PUBLIC SCHOOL IS SOON TO BE UNVEILED

Ryde MP Victor Dominello invited The Weekly Times for a preview visit to the promised new primary school at Smalls Road Ryde on the site of the former Ryde High School closed by a former Labor government.

Landscaping, sports court surface cover and the carpark are complete while the ‘kiss and drop’ zone works to Smalls Road are underway and due to be completed by the end of the year.

The new school opens from Day 1 of Term 1, 2020 (late January), with 43 permanent air conditioned classrooms.

The project will also provide a school hall, a two-storey library, covered outdoor learning areas, out of school hours care facilities, a canteen, administration facilities, multi-purpose sports courts and 47 car spaces.

Megan Gibbons was appointed the school’s principal in August 2019.

The NSW Department of Education says she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role, as a dedicated educator who is committed to the pursuit of excellence and high quality educational opportunities for each and every student.

“Her experience, enthusiasm and leadership will help establish Smalls Road as a school of excel-

lence for our community,” the Department said in a statement.

A deputy principal and office manager have also been appointed.

Smalls Road Public School will commence operation with Kindergarten students and then . Years 1 to 6 from 2021.

Enrolments are underway with three classes and a support unit class for student disabilities. Local parents can still enrol and are encouraged to contact the school for further information.

Kindergarten orientation has already begun with two parent information evenings held. The students will begin their orientation in December.

The school has been working closely with parents on the new uniform and school logo, both of which are published on the school’s website, which the school and the Department of Education are encouraging prospective parents and the community to visit to learn more about Smalls Road Public School - https://smallsroadp.schools.nsw.gov.au/

Evergreen Edna approaches special 100 year milestone STAYING active and spending quality time with family and friends is a recipe for longevity, according to 99 year old North Ryde resident Edna Huggett.

Life has been one exciting adventure for evergreen Edna, who celebrates her 100th birthday next month.

To mark her imminent milestone Edna was given a surprise birthday luncheon from her North Ryde Community Aid Craft Group friends last week at North Ryde RSL Community Club.

It was a special moment for the talented craftsperson who chalks up a century on January 10, 2020.

Edna - who competed in Tenpin Bowling Leagues around Sydney for 40 years - was joined by her Ladies Craft Group colleagues Enid Blackman, Rachel Mottau, Ursula Marquardt, Noela

Taylor, Moya Cavanagh, Bronwyn Gobert and daughter Jenny Lord for the birthday luncheon.

Tenpin bowling was a way of life for Edna for four decades before she was diagnosed with vertigo and forced into retirement at the age of 84.

“I took up tenpin bowling at the age of 45 but the closure of the St Leonards centre made it hard for me to travel around the metropolitan area,” explained Edna.

Raised in the Neutral Bay/Cremorne area, Edna attended Middle Harbour Public School and Willoughby Domestic Science School before finding employment during the Second World War making coverings

for bullets and crafting jewellery cases.

She enjoyed ballroom dancing and married her late husband Jim before they moved to North Ryde with daughter Jenny in 1957.

Edna joined the North Ryde Community Aid Ladies Craft Group nearly 20 years ago where she enjoys two of her favourite hobbies - sewing and crocheting.

One of her favourite pastimes is knitting beanies and mittens for the Dougherty Centre at Chatswood to be distributed to homeless people.

Edna is also an avid reader and enjoys watching documentaries and socialising with her circle of friends.

Gym operator hopes for Ryde Council’s help resolving issues… anytime soon

CITY of Ryde is undermining its own planning strategy for Gladesville by placing onerous conditions on a gym that now threaten its commercial viability, Ryde Independent Councillor Roy Maggio says.

“Ryde has approved mixed use developments down Victoria Road from Ryde to Gladesville,” Clr Maggio aid.

“And it’s now shooting itself in the foot by missing crucial opportunities to activate the area.

In the case of Anytime Fitness, Clr Maggio said Council was imposing strict conditions on the operators, restrict-

ing hours from 8am to 10pm and reducing its operating footprint.

He said the gym operators had been extremely cooperative and wanted to work with Council staff to rectify any issues.

“This is yet another example of Ryde Council lacking business relationships, acumen and empathy for local small business operators,” Clr

Maggio said.

“Restricting a gym’s hours means you eliminate its busiest period, which is early morning from 5am.

“What that means is that the business loses members, local personal trainers also suffer and are left in limbo and it’s the community that ultimately loses.”

Christian Community Aid drumming grant

Christian Community Aid has received a grant of fifty thousand dollars from Ryde MP Victor Dominello.

The grant is part of the state government’s Bravery Empowering Adolescents to Lead program in the Drumming Skills and Leadership section.

It will teach 20 young people in the Ryde Local Government Area to play the drums and then train their peers in drumming.

“Participants will build community connections, life and leadership skills along with creative skills in music,

one of 36 successful applicants across NSW. “We’re committed to engaging young people by providing positive opportunities that help them improve their wellbeing and thrive into adulthood,” Mr Ward said.

“These grants are the perfect platform to promote valuable and innovative ideas and I’m pleased to see so many outstanding projects receive Youth Opportunities funding.”

Girl killed in West Ryde crash A TWENTY year old girl was killed in a car crash in West Ryde on Saturday.

The fatality occured around 10.20pm on Victoria Road near West Parade when the Nissan she was in was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Camry.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where she later died.

The 21-year-old male driver of that car she in was also taken Royal North Shore Hospital with serious injuries.

40 year milestone for leading local tennis coach Andrew Hill LOCAL identity Andrew Hill is celebrating 40 years as a prominent tennis and sports coach.

The leading mentor appreciates the opportunities he has experienced over the past four decades which includes over 30 years at the Head Coach at St Anthony’s Tennis Centre at Marsfield.

“Sports coaching is a great life choice with a passion for sharing sports skills and knowledge in the community,” says Andrew.

“You meet all the locals - tots, kids, teens, parents, corporates, keens and special needs and share the love of sport.

“Our Keens Group is active and older who participate in tennis and table tennis,” he added.

AJH Sports has been working with Special Needs groups through Macquarie Community College and Macquarie University over the past 30 years.

“Our coaches visit Primary schools with free coaching to assist with fundamental motor skills,” said Andrew.

“A big thank you to my mentors and the AJH Sports Team who inspire tennis and sport seven days a week.

“Some comment that it’s “not a job” - but what a great opportunity when you love your work.

“Sports coaching gives you the opportunity to work at local, state, national and international levels.”

Andrew has written programs for Tennis Australia and Table Tennis Australia including ACE Tennis, SMASH, SportsSTAR, Court Sports plus Have a Ball.

You get the opportunities to hit up with legendary Australian tennis champions - John Newcombe, Tony Roche, Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter, John Alexander and Evonne Goolagong-Cawley.

Some of the greatest tennis legends visit locallylike Ivan Lendl in Macquarie Park and Johan Kriek in Eastwood.

“A highlight for myself was being Head Coach of Sydney International Tennis Centre and part of the Lleyton Hewitt Tennis Academy (2002) when he claimed the number one world

ranking.,” revealed Andrew.

As a Master Coach, Hill is training the next generation of tennis coaches in Australia and overseas (China, Korea, and India).

“It has been a privilege to receive my tennis training through Tennis Coach Education systems like TCA, AATC and ATPCA. “You also get the opportunity to experience MultiSports through the Australian Sports Commission withinvolvement of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games at Sydney Olympic Park and part of the Torch and Baton Relay experiences.

“None of this is possible without great support from the Home Team - The Family.

“Being a sports coach is a great family choice with fun and sport every day. I definitely recommend the pathway for school leavers because you become a leader of the community.”

Pace ace Bills radars in on 200 wicket club

THEY don’t come more valuable than Sydney Cricket Club’s lion-hearted first grade pace spearhead Nic Bills (pictured).

With a bagful of wickets and long list of inspirational performances under his belt in the NSW Premier Cricket competition, the Eastwood native remains a trump card for the Tigers in their 2019-2020 premiership campaign.

Last Saturday at Raby Oval, the former NSW quick was at his lethal best – snaring the impressive figures of 5-58 off 22 overs against Campbelltown-Camden.

It was Bills’ third five wicket haul for the summer and helped roll the Ghosts for a first day total of 204 in the 82nd over.

He was supported by seamers Alex Glendenning (2-57 off 20 overs) and Ryan Felsch (2-45 off 13 overs) and leg spinner Nick Gubbins (1-21 off ten).

Bills has proved the mainstay of the Tigers’ attack this season with 36 wickets @ 20.01 across all formats to remind State selectors of his bowling wares.

With 181 career wickets @ 34.71 he is fast approaching the special 200 club.

Bills removed openers Mitchell Carruthers and Nick Appleton for ducks with three runs on the board before claiming the scalps of top scorer Jackson Isakka (78 runs off 154 balls), Luke Webb (21) and Sam Skelly (4).

When all rounder Felsh grabbed the wickets of keeper Harry Swindells (31) and number four Jaydyn Simmons (13)

Nic Bills the Ghosts were reeling at 4-47.

Campbelltown skipper Nathan Glynn added 55 runs for the fifth wicket with Isakka before he was caught by Glendenning off English spinner Gubbins for a pugnacious 32.

At stumps the Tigers were 1-25 after facing 12 overs with Justin Mosca (13 not out) and Matthew Rodgers (12 not out) to resume at the crease this Saturday.

MEANWHILE talented all rounders Marlon Rodrigo, Harry Manenti and spinner Ash Squire starred as Sydney dominated their second grade clash with Campbelltown-Camden at Drummoyne Oval.

Squire claimed the incredible figures of 5-6 off only 27 deliveries to help rout the Ghosts for a meagre first innings total of 83.

Rodrigo then smashed an unbeaten 108 off 105 balls with 12 boundaries and four sixes, combining with the flamboyant Manenti (64 not out off 40 balls that featured six sixes and a boundary) before the Tigers declared at 3-259.

The pair kept the scoreboard humming with a rollicking unbroken stand of 124 for the fourth wicket.

Double recognition for local hero Kel

HE’S renowned for his tireless work as a cricketer and club administrator - now North Ryde RSL personality Kel Gray has been recognised for his tremendous voluntary service to the sport of netball.

The indefatigable stalwart was recently honoured with two major sporting awards for his stand out achievements as a netball coach.

Legendary Kel is the recipient of an inaugural 2019 Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA) Association Medal which recognises his ongoing voluntary service to a netball club and also a 2019 North Ryde RSL Youth Club Volunteer Appreciation Award.

During the summer months you’ll find Kel playing his beloved game of cricket and focussed on carrying out his duties as President of North Ryde RSL Cricket Club.

But as winter approaches and the temperature drops, you’ll find Kel swapping his cricket bat and pads for a netball and coaching his three daughters’ teams at Meadowbank Park.

Kel’s first introduction to netball was watching his older sister Kezlee playing for North Ryde RSL and watching his mum Joan coach Kezlee’s team.

Joan Gray coached and managed netball teams for many years, so Kel grew up being surrounded by a family heavily involved in the sport.

Seven years ago Kel took on the role of coach for his eldest daughter Brianna’s netball team.

The team’s original coach left early in the

season and as there were no other volunteers able to take on the role, Kel put his hand up for the job.

He has been coaching Brianna’s team ever since.

When his second daughter Karli and youngest daughter Ellie needed a coach for their respective teams, Kel again put his hand up and to date has remained a mentor for the talented trio and their promising team mates.

“My Dad as a coach is inspiring and he mixes training up,” says 10 year old Ellie.

“Training is different each week and that’s fun.

After a game, if we win or lose, he tells us that we played well and what we need to work on.”

When asked what she hears most from her dad as her coach on the sideline when she’s playing, Ellie’s answer was a resounding “Get in front - mark your opponent! “ Kel loves coaching because he sees it as so much more than running through the drills and skills.

“It’s more about helping players in any sport,” reveals Kel. “Coaching is about helping players improve and learning team skills, which transfer into life skills. I love watching the growth in each player through the season.

Coaching is so rewarding as I see a player’s improvement, watching their development and

understanding of the game and coaching my daughters’ teams is obviously a bonus.”

Kel experienced a successful 2019 with two of his daughters’ teams.

The North Ryde RSL C6 and 14/2s teams won their respective Grand Finals after impressive displays in the ERNA finals series with Brianna and Karli stamping their mark to give Kel a premiership double as coach.

In 2020 the North Ryde RSL Netball Club will be open to players from the age of six years as the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association has recently changed the age entry level.

This is a great initiative as many six year olds have a keen interest in playing netball.

Registrations for all players will open on January 1, 2020 and the Club accepts the Active Kids Voucher Rebate.

North Ryde RSL Netball Club will hold Grading Days for 9 to 14 year olds from the first week of February 2020 and players should check the Netball Club’s website for exact dates and times.

All gradings will be held at the North Ryde RSL Netball Courts.
