A packed meeting at Hunters Hill Town responded to an exclusive report in The Weekly Times which revealed that ferry operator Transdev is considering the Barangaroo option this month alongside the replacement of Rivercat ferries with new low wash boats.

This shocking Barangaroo proposal will disadvantage hundreds of city workers who need the ferry to dock at Circular Quay to connect with other forms of transport including trains for the City Circle Line, light rail and buses. Transdev spokesman Craig Reick copped a barrage of protest at the Town Hall and is expected to cop more abuse at a meeting in GREENWICH tonight. SEE PAGE 5.

BEVERLEY RUTH McCLYMONT OAM of Brush Farm Historical Society fame was farewelled at All Saints Anglican Church Hunters Hill last Friday at a service lead by the Rector Rev Michael Armstrong.

Bev was just eleven days short of 93 years and had lead a full life with many varied interests including bushwalking shared with her husband John who she married in 1949 and who was also awarded an OAM. They had three children Adrienne, Robert and Andrew and six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Eulogies were presented by granddaughter Alice McClymont and elder son Robert and reading was by Andrea Boland.

Beverley had a great sense of humour and a love of music particularly musicals and light opera and played the piano. She was a member of St Andrew’s Eastwood church choir and an active member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was an accomplished sportswoman playing tennis, taught swimming and was a water ski judge.

Robert said in life and behind the wheel she knew two speeds: Flat out and stop!

Beverley is now reunited with John but she will be missed by many of us. members and friends. Our March meeting is on Tuesday 3, 9.30am at the Hunters Hill Club in Madeline Street. Contact President, Mike Allum on 0417 596 300 for further details.

ROSS McDONALD “RUSTY” RUSSELL OAM of North Ryde would’ve headed This Week’s Birthday Honours List but unfortunately was “Called Home” at age 96.

Rusty had a distinguished career of service to others including World War 2 where he was injured in the landing at Tarakan and had suffered numerous war injuries but always as a Good Scout smiling and whistling under all difficulties.

He was an active member of the Scout Movement all his life from childhood in South Australia meeting his bride Phyllis Gray at a Jamboree in Victoria and later moving to North Ryde war service settlement in

Edmondson Street where he helped start 3rd North Ryde Scout Group and organised Lone Scouts for outback scouts.

Rusty was Ryde’s first Citizen of the Year in 1994 and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to the community and especially Scouting. He was an active Freemason and member of Sydney St George’s Guild of former scouts and guides and a member of St John’s Anglican church North Ryde. * * * J O S E P H I N E FAHEY earns the OBE today at Dalton Gardens (Over Blooming Eighty) while Elaine and Les Duncan celebrate 65 years wedded bliss.

Letters to the Editor Surviving scare of coronavirus

Dear Sir, After hearing you mention this afternoon that local businesses are struggling, the scenes of many empty restaurants in Eastwood come to mind.

Indeed, a difficult time has befallen on us. Then I realised that I might know a way to help our local food businesses, especially in the long term.

Remember, last October I made suggestions regarding food safety issues at the Eastwood Chamber of Commerce meeting? After that, I did some further research and discovered that there was a brilliant Scores on Doors (SOD) food hygiene rating program by Food Authority!

If I counted correctly, 56 out of 128 councils in NSW have now participated in Scores on Doors program, including Ryde!

I read that the councils which have had the program in place for some years, such as the City of Sydney and Mosman Council, said there are very few additional costs beyond the existing health inspection budget. So SOD is quite doable for everyone.

I walked along Rowe Street (Chinese eatery side), West Parade, and the Korean restaurants side of Rowe Street.

I didn’t see a single restaurant with the SOD sticker on their glass doors, even though some have many businessrelated stickers plastered over their doors.

It confounded me. I recall that the Deputy Mayor mentioned to me about language barrier issues the migrant owners of restaurants were facing. Therefore some more training and education on food safety, especially on the SOD scheme for them, would certainly be beneficial.

Also, the Council could consider adding food hygiene and safety scores as one of the most important criteria for business awards for restaurants/eateries/bakeries, to encourage them to join the SOD program, and to reward the ones who have consistently maintained high scores such as 4 or 5 stars.

If we have plenty of restaurants attaining SOD stickers, then we can even start a “Safer and Better Food in Eastwood/Ryde” campaign

to help revitalise the local restaurant businesses, it’ll be a domino effect, other businesses will benefit from the campaign too.

I had put forward my food safety suggestions to the Council last year and the reply I received was stock standard, sounding just like an automated reply.

The Council was probably too busy with other urgent matters. At the time, the restaurant business was booming, you couldn’t find parking at all during lunch or dinner hours in the area.

But now, the parking lots in the Eastwood shopping area are often half empty. Isn’t this the best time to address food safety issues, and help restaurants attain SOD stickers in order to bring back old (and bring in new) loyal long term customers? I feel very hopeful.

Connecting ferry services wanted

Dear Sir, It appears that the State Government is prepared to ignore the needs of regular ferry users in favour of the private vessels operating out of Circular Quay.

Transdev (the private operator of Sydney Harbour’s ferries) is proposing that all services from the Parramatta River (F8 ferries) and Cockatoo Island/Woolwich (F3 ferries) should terminate at Barangaroo rather than at Circular Quay.

It seems this is required under their contract with the NSW government.

Why is Barangaroo an inferior ferry terminus? Simply because it lacks connecting services.

According to Google Maps, it’s a 9 minute walk to the entry to the nearest railway station (Wynyard), and the nearest Light Rail stop (Wynyard) is a 14 minutes walk away.

A public meeting at Hunters Hill Town Hall on Thursday evening made it very clear to Transdev’s spokesperson, Craig Rieck, that Barangaroo is quite unacceptable because it is an outpost rather than a hub.

Or they may walk to their jobs in the northern part of the city, to the Opera House or to the Botanic Gardens.

As Thursday’s meeting progressed it became obvious that Transdev is acting under direction from Government.

It is true that Circular Quay is congested, but the solution is not to move our public ferries to Barangaroo.

Dear Sir, Your article on English village cricket brought back many memories of my childhood in Hampshire, England and sunny summer days watching the village cricket team.

There was always a fierce but friendly rivalry between village teams that continued in the local inn after the game and I also recall the rivalry between counties, such as the War of the Roses derby between the white rose of Yorkshire and the red rose of Lancashire.

What did surprise me in your report is the recent phenomenon of international online interest in village cricket.

I recall trying to explain the game to a couple from Chicago who thought it was

terribly confusing that both village teams wore the same colours: white shirts and white trousers.

They thought it odd the batsman was hunched over the bat - looking like he was about to be sick - and they spent some time looking around the crowd for “the maiden” the bowler was credited with bowling over.

Give me the English game over baseball any day and keep publishing these nostalgic and informative articles!

Hunters Hill mops up after storms

Hunters Hill Council is mopping up after last week’s storms and torrential rain blacked out homes and sent trees crashing across roads.

Mayor Mark Bennett praised Hunters Hill’s State Emergency Services team for a rapid response to the storms and told The Weekly Times that council workers will prioritise jobs throughout the heritage municipality.

“Council’s Works team have been working solidly to clear fallen trees and branches and supporting the efforts of the local SES,” he said.

“Staff have been working with Ausgrid and emergency services to restore service to residents and Council has offered full

support to all emergency service teams and have had work crews and contractors brought in to deal with the removal of fallen trees and debris.”

The SES has reported over 10,000 calls for assistance across the Sydney metropolitan area with 64 jobs logged in Hunters Hill.

Mayor Bennett said major incidents in Hunters Hill included trees across roads and eight power lines were brought down.

“On Monday, we opened the Hunter’s Hill Town Hall for people who had lost

power to come and recharge their phones and enjoy a hot tea,” he said.

“I also acknowledge the great work of our Work’s Team in collaboration with the local SES and other emergency services to assist our community.

“I appreciate the inconvenience and difficulties that the power outages have created.

“We’ve been in constant contact with Ausgrid to expedite work locally.

“It s important that the safety of both our residents and the workers who are restoring power is

paramount.”

“The Town Hall will remain open to the community until power is fully restored across the municipality.”

Hunters Hill SES Unit Commander Louise Bertoni advised that most of the work her unit has performed included removal of trees from roads, pools and footpaths, tarping roofs, and securing windows with silicone.

The Unit also assisted local nursing homes with sandbagging and securing property and the safety of residents.

From Hunters Hill Council offering people the opportunity to charge their phones and providing a welcome cup of tea, the goodwill extended throughout the municipality.

Residents who were fortunate to still have electricity opened their homes to those who were without, allowing them access to hot water for showers and to launder their clothes to cooking meals for them and refrigerating their food.

The power cuts were caused by torrential rain which caused flooding and damage across many parts of the state.

This, of course, followed on from the horrendous bushfires which ravaged large swathes of eastern Australia.

Another community asset for which we should be thankful is local radio.

It was radio that provided the vital source of information for many who were besieged by fire and floods, and indeed loss of regular electricity supplies.

Batterypowered radio remains a powerful traditional communications outlet.

with Chris Schofield Wednesday was World Radio Day. As the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) put it: “At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium”.

As a professional broadcaster for much of my career, I have been a keen advocate of the importance of radio. In later years, I have been involved in a volunteering capacity with two public radio stations which impact on the local community.

As a former chairman of 2RRR, I have been pleased and proud to see the growth of the Henley Cottage-based station from its humble beginnings in the early 1970s. Decades later, the station broadcasts to a wide range of interested groups and individuals in Hunters Hill, Ryde and surrounding areas. Now 2RRR streams worldwide 24 hours a day, seven days a week, attracting an international listenership.

World Radio Day’s theme was diversity, and certainly 2RRR achieves this with its many ethnic language programs as well as niche music programs and programs dedicated to youth audi-

ences.

Currently I am among a handful of volunteers from The Weekly Times readership area who broadcast at 2RPH, Radio for the Print Handicapped, whose studios are at Glebe.

This radio reading service features readings from the top daily newspapers, Australian and international magazines and books. It is aimed at those with print disabilities, lack of access to published material or lifestyles that limit time for reading but who wish to remain informed. The station operates daily between 6.30am and 11.30pm with the BBC World Service rebroadcast overnight.

A focus by 2RPH for 2020 is increasing its engagement and partnerships with the disability and community sectors as a way to foster and recognise the contributions made by people with a disability.

In the face of a significant weather events in recent weeks, we’ve seen the Hunters Hill community spirit come to the fore, with a commitment to help those affected by storms in our local government area.

Council’s works team and emergency services worked together to keep our community safe, from clearing fallen trees, to restoring services to residents as quickly as possible.

Community members who had lost power gathered at Town Hall to recharge phones and enjoy a hot cuppa, while others attended our recent evening barbecue.

Disaster assistance has now been made available to help people and businesses heavily impacted by recent storms and flooding in the Hunters Hill local government area.

Marsden High School had another successful year in the 2019 HSC, with its school ranking jumping another 28 places to place it in the top 200 schools in the state.

Over the past two years, Marsden has improved its ranking by 83 places and continues to achieve great results. In 2019, 10% of all individual results were Band 6, with a 7% increase in Bands 4-6 achieved. Results were well above state median in a number of subjects, with Legal Studies, English Advanced, Mathematics Extension and Music among the most successful subjects.

The Dux was Nathan Chen with an ATAR of 98.3, earning him a place on the NESA ‘All Round Achiever’ merit list for achieving Band 6 for all his subjects.

Nathan started at Marsden High School in Year 7, as a participant in their Pinnacle program, a student enrichment program designed to extend and challenge high performing students.

Alisha Green received the NESA ‘Top Achiever’ award for her result in Business Services and 25 Marsden students made the ‘Distinguished Achievers’ merit list, including Eason Sun, Jack Zhao and Hugo Luo, who each achieved multiple Band 6s and an ATAR above 95.

Success was not limited to Year 12 students; it was shared with Marsden’s many accelerated students, including Smit Shilpatul an accelerated student from Year 8, who was awarded a Band 6 for Mathematics 2 Unit and Mathematics Extension 1, and a number of Year 11 accelerated students.

The presentation night was to celebrate the community work of Rover Crews (18-25 year old youth) across the State. It was held at the Masonic Lodge Temple at Petersham last Thursday night. Five Rover Crews were recognised on the night with some 60 guests in attendance.

Eastwood bail out fund will go ahead despite political storms

A BAIL OUT fund to compensate shops for losses linked to the coronavirus has been blasted as unfair, unworkable and politically motivated.

The bail out will see shops in Eastwood paid up to $2,000 in ratepayer’s money and was endorsed

by City of Ryde councillors at last Tuesday night’s Extraordinary Council Meeting.

It will be administered by council staff with an application criteria to be approved by councillors at a March meeting.

The bail out was proposed by Mayor Jerome Laxale (ALP) and a decision to limit it to Eastwood was put to the council meeting in a successful motion by Labor councillors Penny Pedersen and Edwina Clifton on the grounds that Eastwood shops have suffered a 50 to 80 per cent loss in trade due to social media rumours of the virus spreading in the predominantly Chinese and Korean business districts.

A rescission motion against this proposal was defeated at the Extraordinary Council Meeting.

Eastwood based Clr Peter Kim (ALP) is furious the bail out has been limited to Eastwood and moved two unsuccessful dissent motions at the council meeting.

He argues that shops in West Ryde, Meadowbank, Top Ryde and other locations have suffered the

same loss of trade as the Eastwood shops - for the same reason – and are entitled to share the bail out money.

“You shouldn’t favour one of your children more than the others,” he said.

“Eastwood is not the only shopping district populated by the Asians, who well tell you that all their businesses, right across the City of Ryde, are suffering.

“The only businesses that have made money are the online businesses.”

Councillor Kim gave examples of businesses in West Ryde at risk of closure or unable to pay rent, due to a loss in trade.

His comments were rejected by Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou (Ind).

“We are a council, not a chamber of commerce for the whole city,” he said.

“What Dr Kim has proposed is dividing the community, yet again.

“To handle this virus situation we should not just act strong, we should be strong and a good example of being strong is to help the specific area that has really been affected most by the misinformation on social media.”

Councillor Roy Maggio (Ind) stressed that many

struggling shops would be unable to meet a council criteria for the bail out because they trade in cash without receipts or other proof of a loss in trade.

“There will also be many who will refuse to reveal their confidential business details to this council, for privacy reasons,” he said.

He proposed that Council’s economic development officer visit business across the city and prepare a report but this proposal was rejected by the council’s planning manager, Liz Coad, as unfeasible and unrealistic.

Councillor Maggio has several concerns about the eligibility criteria, not least the conditions that will apply to shops that are franchise businesses.

He has also expressed concern that tradesmen and delivery firms have suffered a “flow on” loss in business but may not be eligible for the bail out money because they do not qualify as a shop.

“It is not a core business of a council to support business but now we have an opportunity to do it, we should support ALL the businesses that have suffered, right across the City of Ryde,” he said.

The Council is seeking a workshop for businesses

partnered by NSW Health to outline the risks – if any – of the coronavirus but a proposal to update the community on individual cases of the virus was strongly opposed by The Greens’ Clr Christopher Gordon.

“This is not Nazi Germany and this proposal is just not on!” he said.

The council will nonetheless investigate the feasibility of providing hand sanitisers and face masks to ratepayers, although Clr Kim has noticed a significant change in shopper’s confidence that coincides with last week’s front page declaration by this newspaper that Eastwood is safe and open for business.

“There are a lot more people in Eastwood, people are eating at restaurants, the car parks are full and Tai Chi classes have returned to the plaza.”

Councillor Edwina Clifton expressed concern that a political debate has dogged what should be a straight forward and commendable action by a council.

“When this was first proposed it was an excellent idea, it still is an excellent idea and yet we hear concerns about handing out money when it is just a mere $2,000 per business,” she said.

He took advantage of that situation on Friday, enjoying the hospitality of local Eastwood businesses, including The Taste of Chongqing Restaurant in Rowe St. Mr Alexander was also joined in Eastwood by State Member for Ryde Victor Dominello MP. Mr Alexander said: “Due to fears regarding the Coronavirus, business has declined in Eastwood in recent times. The Government have put in place extensive risk mitigation measures at our borders, and within Australia.

NSW Health have said: “Eastwood, where almost 40 per cent

of residents identify as having Chinese ancestry, has been one of the suburbs targeted in social media posts falsely warning people they should avoid because of coronavirus. NSW Health has rejected these posts as fake.”

Mr Alexander said: “Eastwood is still open for business, Victor and I support Eastwood, and we encourage others to do so as well.

Long delays on bridge

There will be delays on the Ryde Bridge in coming weeks.

The City of Ryde issued a warning to motorists on Monday.

“Scheduled roadwork is being conducted by DM Roads on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) on Loop Road under Ryde Bridge, resulting in lane closures.

“Roads and Maritimes Services has advised that the works are expected to be completed by April 30..

Heritage listing for Macquarie Ice Rink Many would remember the community outcry early last year when it emerged that a development application was proposing to demolish the Macquarie Ice Rink as part of a redevelopment of the Macquarie Centre.

At the time, the NSW Government placed an interim heritage order on the venue.

That interim heritage order has now expired and the NSW Government has confirmed to Council that it has no intention to heritage list the ice rink, leaving the iconic venue unprotected once again.

Given the decision by the NSW Government, Council has now prepared an urgent planning proposal to heritage list the Macquarie Ice Rink under the Ryde Local Environmental Plan.

The community has made it clear they want the Macquarie Ice Rink protected and I can assure you that Council will now do everything in its power to achieve this.

Hardship fund proposed for Eastwood Council is putting its support behind Eastwood businesses with a proposal to establish a $500,000 Small Business Hardship Fund.

The purpose of the fund is to support Eastwood businesses that have experienced a sharp decline in trade since concerns were raised about the risks posed by the novel coronavirus.

Under the proposal, Eastwood businesses with annual turnover of less than $2 million will be able to apply for grants of up to $2,000 via the fund to help them cope with a reduction in customers.

A ‘Return to Eastwood’ promotional campaign designed to encourage people to shop and eat in Eastwood would also be created.

Council is also proposing to waive the cancellation fees for swim schools and swimming carnivals between January and March, while also waive the notice period for cancellations at Council venues during the same time period.

Coulter Street Party Celebrate the upgrade of Gladesville’s Coulter Street with a special street party that is taking place between 5.00pm and 10.00pm on Friday 6 March.

There will be live music, market stalls, a pop-up bar and plenty of food options available. There will also be children’s activities taking place until 8.00pm.

The City of Parramatta Council has appointed Australian company Built to construct Number Five Parramatta Square – the City’s new $130 million dollar civic, cultural and community building – following a 12-month selection process.

The Construction of Five Parramatta Square, which will be integrated into a refurbished Parramatta Town Hall, is expected to begin in the coming months.

This six-storey building will be dedicated to the community, offering a contemporary public library, a Discovery Centre with exhibition spaces and visitor services, creative spaces and meeting rooms, and a café. It will also be home to the new Council Chambers.

The appointment of Built was welcomed by Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer who described the company’s concept as innovative and unique.

The $130 million structure is the final addition to the new Parramatta Square precinct, a three-hectare mixed-use area in the centre of Parramatta CBD. Located next to Parramatta train station and a future light rail stop on Macquarie Street, the precinct includes 6,000sqm of public domain.

Council anticipates that construction of Five Parramatta Square will be completed in April 2022, to coincide with the completion of the remaining Parramatta Square precinct.

Parramatta urges a rethink Of river ferry services plan

City of Parramatta Council is strongly urging the NSW Government to reconsider plans to cancel direct ferry services between Parramatta and Circular Quay.

The Weekly Times recently revealed that ferry owner Transdev wants to ease pressure of Circular Quay by running ferry services to Barangaroo.

Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said he is also opposed to the proposed removal of popular weekend express services into Parramatta.

“We don’t support the cancellation of direct connections between Parramatta and Circular Quay and the complete removal of weekend express services,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

“Relocating our ferry service to Barangaroo is a significant concern to Council.

“Circular Quay is Sydney’s central tourist and transport hub and losing that direct connection will likely impact our tourism and visitation objectives.

“The proposed plans also fail to consider the need for faster, more frequent services to support the future population, jobs growth and tourism opportunities in Parramatta as the Central River City.

“We look forward to working with Transdev and Transport for NSW as these changes are further refined and considered by the NSW Government to ensure the best outcome for the Parramatta community.”

Parramatta City Council is also advocating for smaller, low impact vessels and more frequent services between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park.

“The ferry to and from the Parramatta CBD is hugely important to the people who live, work, study and visit our great and growing City,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

“With the development of the new Powerhouse Precinct, and Parramatta Square fast becoming a jobs hub, the ferry line will play an even bigger role in connecting commuters to Sydney’s Central River City in coming years.

“We encourage any residents, workers or visitors who may be affected by the proposed changes to have their say.”

“With the help of several prominent figures of the time, the school was officially declared a public institution on October, 15 1861, it was a school with residential facilities.

“Within a year it had moved to 368 Castlereagh Street and in 1868 moved to Ormonde House in South

Head Road, Paddington.

“In 1872, the school moved to large, purpose-built premises at Newtown (now Darlington) where it remained for the next 70 years.

“These premises, now a part of the Sydney University, are still known as the ‘Institute Building’ although they were purchased by Sydney University in 1961.

“In 1961, RIDBC moved to North Rocks, where the main campus

is still located, in addition to 12 further permanent sites.

“Along with changes of location, the name of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children has changed several times since its foundation in 1861.

“These changes reflect both the pervading philosophy of education for children with disabilities of the times and the links between RIDBC and the wider community.

A FERRY plan copped a wave of criticism from Hunters Hill residents at a packed public meeting at the Town Hall on Thursday night.

Spokesman Craig Reick from ferry owner Transdev faced around three hundred residents who are furious that Transdev is considering an option to run Parramatta River ferry services to Barangaroo to ease pressure of Circular Quay.

The residents unanimously passed a motion to strongly oppose any cuts to services to Circular Quay and wharves on the north shore and condemned Transport NSW for not sending a spokesperson to the meeting.

Mr Reick told residents Barangaroo is proposed to be the “second hub” for

Sydney’s ferry services and is the “perfect gateway” for new areas of Sydney.

“Barangaroo will lesson the load on Circular Quay and you will have the same opportunities at both locations,” he said.

In response to concerns a reduction in ferry services to Circular Quay will deprive passengers of access to the City Circle rail network, Transdev is considering an option to provide a pedestrian tunnel from Barangaroo to Wynyard.

This option was blasted by the residents.

“Most of us are not young and we cannot walk up a tunnel from Barangaroo to

Wynyard carrying heavy baggage,” they told Mr Reick.

“This is certainly not the short six minute walk you tell us it will be.

“We have lived in Hunters Hill all our lives, we have children going to Sydney University, we go to the Opera House by ferry and we want to stay going to Circular Quay.”

Transdev was accused of profiteering from the proposed ferry changes, an accusation Mr Reick strongly denied.

“We are required to optimise the utilisation of the asset,’’ he said.

“Optimisation of the net-

work is not a bad thing.

“We can still run the river services out of Barangaroo and still run a Circular Quay service.”

Residents demanded to know why some Circular Quay wharves were dedicated to private cruise boats in preference to ferry services but Mr Reick said Transdev had no control of contractual deals between these private operators and ports authorities.

“I do not have the capacity to say go away P&0, go away private cruises, we are not a ports authority,” he said.

Residents rejected these comments and said this

shared use of Circular Quay “is yet another example” of putting profit before people.

Residents also demanded to know what control NSW Transport had on the Transdev proposal and stressed that they have been meeting with Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts to pressure the state government to scrap the proposal.

“We are required to report to the government and at the end of the day our proposal needs to be approved by the government,” Mr Reick said.

Parents with children who attend Loretto Catho-

lic College and other private schools on the north shore expressed concern that Transdev is considering cuts to smaller wharfs on the north shore and will nominate Balmain as an interchange route for morning peak services.

Councillor Ross Williams told residents Hunters Hill Council will consider the unanimous motion to retain the Circular Quay services.

Mr Reick was also – and perhaps unfairly – accused of not being open and transparent with residents and he made the point that the whole point of addressing the public meeting was to show Transdev’s com-

mitment to “take onboard” public feedback.

Drummoyne MP John Sidoti is lobbying on behalf of voters in his electorate, City of Ryde Clr Roy Maggio is lobbing on behalf of the people of Ryde and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts is lobbying on behalf of local voters.

“We will be meeting with the Minister for Transport, Mr Andrew Constance, to deliver the thousands of signatures with which we have been presented and communicate the importance the ferry services hold to our communities,” Mr Roberts said.

Million dollar football pitch turfed A proposal to install a one million dollar synthetic turf football pitch on Gladesville’s Westminister Park is likely to be scrapped.

City of Ryde Works Committee Chair Clr Penny Pedersen told The Weekly Times the proposal does not have the support of neighbouring residents and the committee is seeking a more appropriate site for the synthetic pitch.

“These residents are not opposed to sport being played in the park, as both soccer and cricket are played here each week and they already have lighting at the park in the evening,” Clr Pedersen said.

“A synthetic surface would, however, spoil access for passive, unorganised activities and limit the types of sports that could be played there.”

The Weekly Times can reveal that a staff report to the Works Committee found that trees would need to be cut down to

install the pitch and the size of the proposed pitch would have to be expanded to comply with Football NSW regulations.

The report also found that costly flood mitigation works would need to be carried out.

Scrapping the proposal will disappoint parents who had hoped the synthetic pitch would be available to junior players and womens’ teams later this year.

Councillor Roy Maggio (Ind) disagrees with the committee finding that most residents are opposed to the synthetic pitch and said surveys he has seen reveal that more locals support it than oppose it.

“It is about two to one in favour of the pitch,” he said.

“We also have a growing population and every sur-

vey we’ve undertaken into sports amenities clearly show we need more.”

Councillor Pedersen stressed that no junior of female players who looked forward to the synthetic pitch would be losers because the council will seek a new location for the pitch.

“While I understand that the City of Ryde requires more sports fields for our growing population, I can not support a synthetic field at this site if it means removing mature trees, reducing the passive recreation space of local residents and creating a drainage issue that will cost thousands to mitigate when we can simply build the field elsewhere,” she said.

“I have been to all the consultation sessions and have held meetings with angry residents for months

and they oppose a synthetic surface.”

The neighbouring scout hall is to be redeveloped with the hall space will retained.

The proposal to scrap the synthetic pitch will be debated at an upcoming council meeting.

“I have spoken with my Labor colleagues and the Greens councillor who agree the funding for a synthetic surface would be better used at a more appropriate site,” Clr Pedersen said.

“I have their support to reject the synthetic surface and ask that the funds be used elsewhere.”

THE LANE COVE community has been praised for contributing a record five million cans and containers in the past two years.

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts said he commends people across his electorate for contributing locally to the 3 billion containers.

“Return and Earn has been very successful in Lane Cove with more than 5.2 million containers returned helping to contribute to the 3 billion now collected,” he said.

“Return and Earn has now soared past three billion containers returned state wide just a month after the second anniversary of the initiative.”

Summer is the peak season for return and earners to cash in their containers due to an increase in the purchase of drinks and Mr Roberts said the recent

holiday period was a particularly impressive one for returned containers “The growth of the scheme has been phenomenal and highlights a fundamental change in people’s thinking and behaviour around litter,” he said.

“Statewide between December and January, there were 10 days with more than seven million drink containers returned a day, including four days with over 8 million containers returned.” he said.

“This scheme has highlighted so many positives across communities and every bottle returned is a win for the environment.”

NSW can donate to Bottles for the Bush, on all reverse vending machines with 10 cents from each container going towards helping farmers and rural families impacted by the drought and the recent bushfire devastation.

This option is part of a nationwide appeal that has raised more than $430,000 so far with more than $360,000 coming through NSW’s Return and Earn scheme.

Lifeline opens new store in Gladesville

Lifeline’s new store in Gladesville was officially opened by Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett last week.

Mayor Mark Bennett cut the ribbon to open the store and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts gave a keynote address.

Mayor Bennett said it was a pleasure to open the store and thanked the volunteers who worked so hard to make it a success.

He said the shop, which is part of the Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury network, provided an opportunity for locals to support Lifeline’s crisis support

and suicide prevention services by donating good quality, pre-loved items to the store, volunteering with the team there, or shopping in-store.

“More broadly, Lifeline provides free 24-hour telephone support to residents of Hunters Hill via phone number 13 11 14, plus face-to-face counselling and community services from its office in Gordon,” he said.

“For many years I worked

as a volunteer crisis counsellor with Ted Noffs in Kings Cross.

“In fact, it was during those years that I made a decision to further my studies and complete a Masters of Applied Psychology and become a Psychologist.

“I must add, I didn’t quite realise how many years of study were required and those years were followed by a two-year internship.

“However, I persisted

and it was without doubt the best decision of my academic life.

“During my time at university it became abundantly clear just how fragile many of us are, and how fragile life can become during difficult times.

“Most us will need help, at some time in our lives.

“Lifeline is that refuge for many and it is an absolute lifesaver for those suffering and also for the carers of those who suffer.”

Recognition for TWT SPORTS STARS NO. 8, 9 & 10 triathlete Nic, netballer Georgia & catcher Brandon

PARALYMPIC triathlete Nic Beveridge, rising NSW netball midcourter Georgia Marshall and outstanding baseball catcher Brandon Lee are the eighth, ninth and tenth monthly recipients in the 2019-2020 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award.

All three will be recognised for their meritorious achievements at a special presentation this Friday night February 21 at Gladesville RSL Community Club at 6pm.

CHRIS KARAS reports; Thirty-three-year-old Beveridge claimed a silver medal for Australia at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games; netball dynamo Marshall was named Most Valuable Player after helping Eastwood-Ryde win a maiden NSW Netball Premier League Open championship title last season while boom 15-year-old North Ryde RSL colt Lee forced his way into the Emerging Blue Sox Baseball Development Squad.

NIC BEVERIDGE

NIC BEVERIDGE is a Triathlete on a mission in 2020.

Under the coaching of West Ryde’s Paralympic legend Louise Sauvage, a determined Nic shapes as one of our big hopes on the international scene.

Beveridge competes in the PTWC (handcycle/racing wheelchair classification) and underlined his potential when he snared a silver medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

A steely-eyed Nic has now set his sights on a podium finish at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo later this year after capping a strong 2019 ITU World Triathlon series with a ninth placing in the Men’s PTWC Grand Final in Lausanne.

He is able to compete in triathlon by swimming using his upper body, riding with a recumbent handcycle and completing the run through the use of a racing wheelchair.

During his teens, Nic showed natural ability on the cross-country track, in the swimming before his world fell in at the age of 17.

He woke one morning to discover he was paralysed from the waist down with doctors diagnosing transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition which attacks the spinal cord.

While in hospital during the London 2012 Paralympic Games he began to research his options in Para-sport and inspired by Bill Chaffey, a five-time world champion in Para-triathlon, Nic contacted Triathlon Queensland and was classified.

He made his international debut the following year at the 2013 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Grand Final in London where he placed 17th and his Paralympic debut three years later at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, where he finished in ninth place.

At the 2014 and 2015 ITU World Championship Grand Finals in Edmonton and Chicago respectively, Beveridge finished ninth in the Men’s PT1.

Representing Australia at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Nic came within seven seconds of a place on the podium by finishing fourth - his best ever international performance.

He tasted gold medal success for the first time at the 2018 ITU Para-triathlon World Cup in Sarasota, USA and has since carved out impressive results under his mentor Sauvage - one of Australia’s greatest ever wheelchair racers.

GEORGIA MARSHALL realised a dream last season when she created history with her Eastwood Ryde Hawks netball representative team mates.

The skilful centre was a key member of the Hawks’ side that brought home a maiden NSW Netball Premier League Opens championship - producing a classy performance in the 68-44 Grand Final victory over Central Coast Heart at Netball Central in Sydney Olympic Park.

Georgia capped a memorable campaign by earning the Most Valuable Player Award - a just reward for her superb displays in the 2019 competition.

The super fit Marshall joined the ERNA Hawks Premier League team in 2016 and has been a dedicated and loyal member for the past four seasons.

After a standout and consistent season with the Hawks’ Opens squad in the Premier League, Georgia was rewarded with a return to the elite level after being named in the NSW Waratahs side.

Georgia began her netball career at the age of 7 for Penrith RSL in the Penrith Netball Association and was always a shooter at club level.

She played representative netball from the age of 11 - lining up for Penrith in State Age netball in the 12yrs to 15yrs age groups and gaining selection in the Western Sydney Academy of Netball from 2010-2012.

Georgia was a member of the Combined Catholic Colleges Open Netball team in 2010 and 2011 and represented the NSW U/21 State team during the 2015 season.

In recognition of her top performances at senior level, the talented Marshall was chosen in the Netball NSW ANL (Australian Netball League) teams in 2013 and 2017.

A versatile athlete, Georgia also excelled at Little Athletics, touch football and cricket where she spent two years in the NSW Breakers U/15 team and City representative sides for the annual clashes with Country.

Hard working Georgia has become a valued member of the ERNA Hawks club and is always glad to help out with all fundraising activities including coaching clinics where she’s happy to pass on her skills and knowledge.

NORTH Ryde RSL have produced one out of the box in promising baseballer Brandon Lee of East Ryde.

Lee - who was named North Ryde RSL Youth Club’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2019 - has a bright future in the game.

The boom 15-year-old catcher was a deserved recipient for his meritorious achievements in the sport and enormous contribution to baseball as a player and as an accomplished umpire.

A member of the Emerging Blue Sox Development Squad for the past four years, the sky is the limit for young gun Brandon who has the natural ability and desire to go a long way in the sport.

Since joining the North Ryde RSL Baseball Rams as a seven year old, the promising Lee has impressed officials with his catching skills and strong work ethic on and off the field.

By the age of ten he was playing Little League for the Ryde Hawks and was ultimately rewarded for his skilful performances with selection in the Baseball NSW State Junior Program.

Another proud honour for Brandon was receiving the club’s Darren Mawson Award for his distinguished service, striving to do his best, good attitude and willingness to always help.

In 2018 the Marist College Eastwood student played up a grade in the Sydney Senior League Div 1 competition and proved a lynchpin in helping the North Ryde RSL Under 16s team go through the 2018-19 season undefeated.

Brandon played a key role in his side’s tie-breaker Grand Final victory over the Greenway Giants, showing an on-field maturity that far belied his years.

As well as being a sensational catcher who has represented his Association and Ryde Hawks Baseball League at the NSW State Senior League Championship, the gifted Lee is also an exceptional umpire.

He is the Umpires Co-ordinator for North Ryde RSL Baseball and umpires weekly for the club in grades equal and above his own.

Brandon also umpires at an Association level and has earned his spurs at the State Championships over the past few years.

Last year he boosted his credentials when he attended the Level 1 Umpires seminar to upgrade his accreditations. * * *

Tigers new look 2020 side were too good for Bennies Bunnies in the Nines tournament in Perth at the weekend to wipe them off 17-8 in a good preview start for the year.

BILLY WALTERS promises to be a bright new star at the Tigers and celebrated with an opening try at last weekends Nines in Perth.

Starring for the new look Tigers was Billy the Kid Walters who displayed speed and agility to score the opening try in the demolition derby.

Tigers supercoach Michael “Madge” Maguire was pleased with the showing by some of his carefully selected new chums who he previewed.

And incidentally Madge is the best thing to happen at the Tigers since sliced bread and with an astute CEO in Justin Pascoe we have the best combination at the leadership since Noah built the ark.

We all know the Nines are a Mickey Mouse set up but its still a good promo for the game but don’t know if it won many friends in the west.

This Saturday at Penrith should be a better

guide to things to come when the Tigers can trial more new recruits as they vie for a starting spot when the comp starts for the Tigers Sunday March 15 at the Gong guests of the Sinners.

Better still will be the next week when the mighty Tigers host the Newcastle Frights at home at Australia’s best footy ground Leichhardt Oval HQ Sunday arvo March 22 at 4.05pm.
