New South Wales citizens go to the polls this Saturday to decide who rules the State for the next four years.

Public opinion polls suggest the result is on a knife’s edge between Liberal reigning premier Gladys Berejiklian and Labor’s Michael Daley with some pundits claiming the possibility of a hung parliament with Independents ruling the roost.

Local interest will focus on Ryde where Liberal MP Victor Dominello is being strongly challenged by Ryde’s Labor mayor Jerome Laxale and in Lane Cove where Liberal’s Anthony Roberts is under fire by former Hunters Hill mayor Independent Richard Quinn. SEE INSIDE PAGES 6 - 9 & 13.

Beecroft Orchestra Concert

Two TWT readers can win double passes to The Beecroft Orchstra’s opening 2019 concert on Sunday March 31 in St Albans Anglican Church, Pembroke Street. Epping at 2.30pm.

Beecroft Orchestra will present a concert program which will be popular with families and children.

It will feature well known children’s entertainer Danielle Baynes as narrator in Katy Abbott’s “The Peasant Prince”, the story of dancer Li Cunxin.

The story is also told in the recent movie “Mao’s Last Dancer.”

Other popular works include Tchaikovsky’s Walz of the Flowers, Offenbach’s Can Can Polka and the Dam Buster’s March by Eric Coates.

Lantern Club hosts Crazy Whist Day

RYDE Lantern Club will hold their famous Crazy Whist Day next Monday March 25 in St Anne’s Anglican Church Hall, Church Street, Ryde.

Cost $7 per head includes morning tea and lunch. The fun starts at 10am with morning tea before games commence at 10.30am followed by lunch. There’ll be lucky numbers and good fellowship and also a ‘beginners table’ for those who haven’t played before.

Orchestra in the Park

CITY of Ryde Council have re-scheduled a FREE Orchestra in the Park event to Saturday March 30 at Brush Farm House from 6pm to 8.30pm.

The Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Ian Cox, will stage a performance that will include Mozart’s ‘Overture from The Magic Flute K. 620’, Mendelssohn’s ‘Auf Flugeln des Gesanges’ (On Wings of Song) by J.L.F. (Felix) with soloist Alison Robertson, as well as Haydn’s ‘Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major’ with soloist George Yang. There’ll also be drinks and food available to pur-

chase on the night with an on-site bar, cheese boards, coffee and desserts.

Brush Farm House will also be open to the public to take tours on the night. The grounds will be open from 5pm.

Ten year old St Charles Borromeo Ryde student James Mifsud (pictured) shaved off the hair that he loves last week at a school assembly to help raise nearly $3000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Brave James decided to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave to help those suffering from cancer - setting an initial goal of $1200.

Teriza Eid donated her time to do the honours of shaving. With the generosity of family, friends and community he has to date managed to raise over $2500. Well done James.

Top Ryde customers furious and sad at forced closure

Top Ryde’s most popular longest serving shop the iconic Golden Banana is being forced to close because of rent hikes by centre management.

The Weekly Times has been inundated by sad and furious shoppers who are lamenting the passing of the landmark fresh food establishment which has been a part of many of their lives for a lifetime.

One of the shoppers told The Weekly Times that “The Golden Banana is the next victim of escalating rents and a landlord that refuses to negotiate with its tenants”.

Letters to the Editor Finding Seniors Party LETTERS Welcome on ballot paper Dear Sir, Where are the Seniors?

This will possibly be one of the questions asked by voters at the NSW State election on Saturday March 23.

The Seniors United Party of Australia (SUPA) will not have its name on the NSW Upper House ballet paper, but there will be sixteen candidates in one column and a box to place “1” in.

Voters will need to work out which column.

Why won’t SUPA have its name on the ballot paper?

The reason is that the NSW electoral Commission was given tougher rules for minor parties to register, in a deliberate attempt to stifle them.

By raising the bar to register a political party SUPA fell short, and although already registered with the Federal Electoral Commission, did not have time for a second attempt. Something the major parties would be happy with.

Democracy is good, so long as it works in favour of the Liberal and Labor Parties!

As for finding the Seniors on the Upper House ballot paper the answer to the secret is look for the name Chris Osborne at the top of the column under the box for the party.

Give credit where it is due

Dear Sir, Re TWT Article on March 6 on Page 8 re Council and Falling Tree Branches.

The article says “The new policy was recommended

by Clr Penny Pedersen”.

Myself and other residents have had no-one that would listen to us re tree branches falling for many years until Clr Roy Maggio got involved.

It was Clr Roy Maggio who put up the Motion at the Council Meeting and myself and other residents spoke at the meeting.

A number of councillors including Penny Pedersen spoke about and supported the Motion put up by Roy Maggio.

Praise for Hunters Hill Council Dear Sir, People at times have been quick to criticise their councils over various issues, and at times justifiably so.

My recent experience in dealing with Hunters Hill Council has been nothing but positive.

I had reason to raise certain issues in the municipality that in my opinion warranted attention.

All issues raised were dealt with fairly promptly and in an efficient manner. \Thank you to the two Tracy’s and the two gentleman whose names I did not record.

Thank you also to the ground staff that keep Boronia Park Oval looking so beautiful and green.

Despite the limited resources available to council you are never the less all very much appreciated.

Is new hospital Pie in the sky?

Dear Sir, See the promised upgrade to Ryde Hospital

has dropped out of the news, though I would think its vital to your readers.

Unless I missed something, saw nothing apart from the bald announcement of the money to be spent – no details about what is planned, when will the work start, or is it all pie in the sky for sometime in the future.

Any chance of a followup from either the government or the local members or even the health department?

Low level smear campaign letter Dear Sir, I believe the City of Ryde mail boxes received an anonymous letter, photocopied on the back of a local newspaper article, stating that it was endorsed by a particular party.

At first glance, it looked like a letter from an irate neighbour, which had us feeling anxious about a neighbourhood issue, when then after reading the full transcript and realising that cowardly no one put their name to it.

Many of our local people voiced their disgust in this low level smear campaign made to look like some concerned neighbour had taken the time to write a personal note.

We later discovered they used a fake handwritten type font, and photocopied it on the back of the article.

You would do well to bring this to the attention of the community, as it is an underhanded cowardly way to scare people into believing rubbish.

Making a choice on Saturday Dear Sir, When it comes time to casting my vote in a few days time, my choice is becoming clearer and clearer.

For me, it has become a choice between a late comer kid who has delivered nothing and whines a lot and a local member who is building schools and infrastructure.

A choice between a statesman Minister who has remained dignified throughout the campaign and a mayor who has brought shame upon the political process with his childish and undignified games.

When promises are made by the candidates, it has become clear that one has runs on the board and the other can’t be trusted to deliver on his (me too) promises.

The delivery of schools, pools, roads, metro rail, parks, and more schools

by Victor Dominello contrasts with Mayor Laxale’s only promise - to demolish a historic and beautiful park to build a car park (with $25m already provided by Victor Dominello).

It can’t be plainer for me.

Victor Dominello with his sleeves rolled up getting the job done and delivering for Ryde or the kid spiv who hasn’t a clue about what it really takes to be a leader.

Resident supports Govt remediation Dear Sir, I have been a resident of Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill for 54 years, longer than any other resident of our street, and I was part of the group of Battlers for Kellys Bush who, with the late Tom Uren, fought to save beautiful Kellys Bush from development.

You might say I experienced some battles in my life.

I am also the resident of Nelson Parade who received the original letter from the NSW Government dated 17/1/1978 all those years ago, promising to remediate the contaminated sites in our street.

Yes, I still have that original letter stored safely…. you never know when you might need things like that!

I am also in the unique position of having three generations of my family (myself, my daughter and three of my grandchildren) all living in Nelson Parade.

These three generations all live close to the contaminated sites and we are all accepted as being some of those families “most directly affected”, unfortunately on a day to day basis, by the contaminated sites.

We, unfortunately, do not live far enough away from the sites as to be merely peripherally affected.

I, my daughter, her husband and my grandchildren, completely support the current proposal for remediation developed by our local member Anthony Roberts and Property NSW. Finally, after all these years, a State Govt has been focussed enough to develop a plan to fix our problem and do the right thing by our community and, what is even better, it is proposed to all be completed in just two years, by 2021.

I am very happy that I have, once again, been part of a local community group that has worked very hard and very collaboratively with the Govt, achieved so much and looks to have now fixed this longstanding problem, not only for my daughter and myself but also for my grandchildren and for other residents and members of the Hunters Hill community.

Healthy competition In Ryde & Lane Cove Dear Sir, The upcoming election promises to be close overall, and also in Lane Cove and Ryde where Roberts and Dominello are incumbents.

This is due I think in part to the quality of those seeking office, Mayor Laxale in Ryde and Mayor Emeritus Quinn in Lane Cove.

Win or lose this is healthy as it forces closer attention to the community concerns, and so helps restore lost faith in the political process as a whole.

On that point of restoring

faith I agree with an earlier letter lamenting political attack advertising.

We received one recently, from the other side of politics to the one she was quoting.

Probably based on research that this works in getting votes, the wider message is we will do anything to gain power.

Whoever does it this only undermines further public confidence that the political process has integrity.

Nelson Parade plan welcomed Dear Sir, Anthony Roberts’ announcement in the TWT on Wednesday February 27 2019 to confirm the NSW Government will support the current Nelson Parade remediation plan and his commitment for total offsite storage as soon as a site becomes available, was the best news we have had in some time.

The Government has run an extensive community consultation process and based on the positive feedback, the Government has confirmed that it is committed to the remediation.

Although there are still some hurdles to overcome, we have pencilled in 2021 as the year it will be completed.

We live next door to the Government site, are recognised as the family most affected by the current contamination and we welcome this news.

We would like to publically thank Anthony Roberts, Simon Babbage, and of course the team at Property NSW, for all of the hard work that everyone has put into this project.

After so many years of uncertainty we finally have a solution to this problem and are thrilled that this issue will now be all done by 2021.

Twenty years of ART in Hunters Hill Exhibition

MY INSTINCT to draw and paint started young, sketching faces and painting on bits of Masonite from Dad’s shed.

As I started my career, in a less creative, albeit precise way in Cartography - I did learn a lot about accuracy and detail.

But I craved more creativity and continued to pursue my art whenever I could.

Always keen to experiment with different mediums, techniques and surfaces has resulted in a varied body of work.

People, colours, places, inspire my ever-changing visual narrative.

Faces are still my favourite subject to paint.

I remain as excited as ever when someone loves my work enough to buy it or commission a painting.

In between painting portraits, I let my experiences inspire me and I paint, paint, paint then exhibit. * * * ON REFLECTION I’d never have guessed my love of Art would ultimately become my career and take me to the places it has.

Some highlights include being selected as guest artist for Biennale in Izmir, exhibiting in Florence, Monaco, Paris and Washington.

I’ve had lunch with the Director of the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery, met the American Ambassador as president of Portrait Artists Australia and in my capacity of Arts Ambassador for The Sir David Martin Foundation I produced a drawing acknowledging the Centenary of the Australian Navy, subsequently dining at Parliament House Canberra with the highest-ranking officers Of the Navy.

As an exhibiting Artist in Art Monaco I was interviewed by the BBC and invited to a special event at the Hotel Du Paris, full of European paparazzi. * * * I STILL giggle at my website crashing over my unhung Archibald portrait of Christine Forster and Virginia Edwards.

There were TV cameras at home, the painting has been a question on a quiz show and profiled in the international media.

I’ve been fortunate to paint numerous people, celebrities and politicians - but perhaps my greatest privilege has been as an art teacher.

Twenty years ago, I started art classes at home in Hunters Hill with

the hope I would inspire and encourage others like me, who love art.

Over the years the classes have travelled to Canberra, exhibited in Le Vesinet and painted together in Italy.

It has been a’ life’ experience nurturing these wonderful people.

The classes and output have grown.

I’ve also run workshops for Outback NSW and for various art societies, this year heading out to Lighting Ridge.

I’ve lived in Hunters Hill for 34 years and sold my first painting 30 years ago at the Hunters Hill Art Show.

I have gone on to judge the Hunters Hill Art Show a few times nowalong with many other exhibitions. * * * A TWENTY Years of ART in Hunters Hill exhibition will be held over the June long weekend this year - with Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett to officially open the event on opening night Friday June 7.

On Sunday March 3, twelve volunteers collected 34.5kg mixed waste materials and 19kg recyclable containers/bottles at Gladesville Reserve.

The following Sunday 12 volunteers collected 30.6 kg mixed waste materials and 3.1kg recyclable containers/ bottles at Riverglade Reserve; Total rubbish collected was less than the previous year.

Tiger Snake experts following a reported sighting at Riverglade Reserve.

They agreed that it is more likely to be a blue tongue lizard (similar stripping) with 95 per cent of call-outs of reported Tiger Snakes being blue tongue lizards.

Tiger Snakes are rare in the Sydney metro region and there have been no recorded Tiger Snakes in the Riverglade Reserve vicinity.

Snakes found in the area include the RedBellied Black Snake, Swamp or Marsh Snake and Golden Crowned Snake.

In an exclusive interview with The Weekly Times Sue Hoopmann said her support for Mr Quinn reflects her respect for his community achievements as a long serving Mayor of Hunters Hill and his tenacious fight against a government proposal to force the heritage municipality to merge with Ryde and Lane Cove.

Just over a year since she quit the Liberal Party in protest against forced mergers the highly respected former mayor believes the time is right to have the Liberals ousted in the Lane Cove electorate.

“Richard Quinn was an independent mayor and he would make an excellent state member because he is a com-

munity person who will represent the community in parliament, not a politician who will represent the government in the community,” Ms Hoopmann said.

“I served on the council for two decades and Richard was my Deputy when I was an independent mayor,” Sue Hoopmann OAM said.

“So I know he thinks more like I do than anyone else I know and I feel more closely to his independent position than I do to a political party.”

After years of campaigning at a state and federal level for the Liberals it would not be surprising if embittered party members see her actions as a betrayal.

So far, the opposite is true.

“To have betrayal you first have to have trust and Sue Hoopmann lost our trust months ago when she quit the party,” one Liberal campaigner in Gladesville said.

Sue Hoopmann accepted that there would be some Liberals who do not respect the reasons why both she and Richard Quinn quit the Liberal Party but she insists her experience at polling booths in Gladesville and Lane Cove has been a positive one.

“Apart from the weather I’ve enjoyed campaigning and we’ve all been friendly during prepolling and we’ve had a good relationship with each other,” she said.

“As for (Liberal candidate) Anthony

Roberts, I’m not happy he didn’t fight for Hunters Hill during the forced mergers battle, but Richard Quinn most certainly did, so that’s another reason I’m supporting him.

“But the main reason I’m supporting Richard is that the community needs a parliamentarian local people can work with.”

The Emeritus Mayor did admit there was once a time when she would have considered running as a candidate but today her life is devoted to her family and to travel.

“I’m disappointed there isn’t a woman candidate, so let the best man win and let us hope it is the man who will best represent this community.”

Boronia Park wins a lollipop supervisor

BORONIA Park Public School will get a road safety lollipop supervisor.

The school community has recently campaigned for the supervisor and highlighted traffic related problems during school arrival and leaving hours.

The upcoming appointment was made possible through lobbying from Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts who said student safety is the government’s top priority.

“The school is now eligible for a lollipop supervisor thanks to 300 additional lollipop supervisors to be provided by the Berejiklian Government,” he said.

“This was a collective effort by our community because Boronia Park Public previously didn’t qualify for

extra help will now meet the criteria making school children even safer.

“Even a small detail like getting kids into the school safely has received increased investment because we have been able to balance the budget and pay off debt.”

“Special thanks is given to Hunters Hill Deputy Mayor Clr Ben Collins, the Scholl Principal and the P&C who have been tireless in their efforts.”

Education Minister Rob Stokes said the Boronia Park initiative would offer more protection for children and improved visibility for motorists.

“As Mr Roberts has said,

keeping students safe is our number one priority and every child should be able to get to and from school safely.”

Mr Stokes said under the previous requirements, a crossing had to be used by 300 cars per hour in the morning or afternoon as well as at least 50 students to be eligible for a supervisor.

“More schools will NOW be eligible for a lollipop supervisor, including 69 schools that had previously applied and were found ineligible,” he said.

The School Crossing Supervisor Program currently funds up to 1200 supervisors at around 800 crossings across the State.

New traffic congestion busting traffic lights will be installed along Epping Road from North Ryde to Epping and Victoria Road in West Ryde will be widened, Ryde MP Victor Dominello said on Friday.

The location of the new lights on Epping Road has yet to be determined butMr Dominello confirmed that a new pedestrian access way will link Victoria Road to West Ryde railway station to be built as part of the Victoria Road project.

“Victoria Road will also be widened to a consistent three lanes in each direction between West Parade and Hermitage Road,” he said.

“This will include lengthening of the rail bridge to allow the widening.

“The upgrade will also deliver pedestrian connections along Victoria Road to provide access to West Ryde Station.”

He said the traffic lights on Epping Road will use the latest technology to reduce peak hour traffic jams.

“They will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion,” he said

“With Australia’s premier technology hub in Macquarie Park just moments away, it isa no-brainer that the Ryde community should benefit from congestion-busting smart technology.”

He said “pinch points” along Carlingford Road will be also be tackled with a left turn lane and dual right turn lanes set to be built on Carlingford Road.

Carlingford Road will also be widened between Rembrandt Street and Hepburn Street to provide a bus lane and two through lanes westbound and eastbound.

“Roads will also upgraded to provide an additional southbound lane between M2 Motorway and Woodstock Avenue at Carlingford.”

Treasurer and Liberal candidate for

Epping Dominic Perrottet welcomed an additional $1.2 billion in measures to slash travel times and improve safety.

“This is a great win for Epping,” he said.

“This investment will keep traffic flowing smoothly, and cut the time drivers will have to spend sitting in traffic so they can spend more time at home with their families.”

Stop the Lib-Labor squabbling, says Ryde Conservatives candidate CONSERVATIVES candidate for Ryde Steve Busch says candidates for the major parties are too busy playing the “blame game” and not tackling the real issue of inadequate infrastructure.

Mr Busch, a QANTAS pilot and Eastwood resident, said incumbent member Victor Dominello and his Labor challenger, Mayor Jerome Laxale, should be more focused on reversing the failure to build infrastructure to address traffic gridlock, to meet the community’s growing demand for services.

But instead they were “squabbling” in a “blame game” on over-development.

The reality, he said, was that the state Government had imposed on Ryde two Urban Activation Precincts (UAPs) and densification of Ivanhoe Estate on land sold-off in Macquarie Park and North Ryde.

“Other developments in Meadowbank and Eastwood have been approved by the State Government’s Department of Environment and Planning,” Mr Busch said.

“It’s ridiculous that Mr Dominello blames council for ‘over- development’,

when all large developments are approved by his Government’s planning department.

“We also have Labor’s Mayor Laxale blaming the State Government approvals on applications supported by Council”.

The Australian Conservatives candidate also took aim at Mr Dominello, stating the State Government had reaped billions of dollars from Ryde from land sales, sales tax and massive contributions from Chinese developers, but had put nothing back into the city’s infrastructure.

“Mr Dominello has failed Ryde,” Mr Busch said.

“He failed to get the underground bus terminal in Macquarie Park (despite promises), he failed to get light rail into Macquarie Park via Carlingford and Parramatta, and he even failed to address the urgent need for an overpass above Meadowbank Station.

“Then there is his complete lack of vision to support road and footbridges over Parramatta River, or road tunnels under Lane Cove and Victoria Roads to relieve massive through-traffic congestion.”

Mr Busch also said he’s impressed with the huge interest shown in his party

by Ryde voters.

He said he has eagerly engaged with the local community during the ‘pre-poll’ voting period and following his appearance at last week’s ‘Meet the Candidate’ event at Club Eastwood.

“Voters are giving us the thumbs up for our common-sense energy policy which calls for an end to silly emissions targets and subsidies for costly renewables at the expense of reliable and affordable electricity supply for ordinary consumers and businesses,” he said.

Concord Hospital upgrade too little too late, says Drummoyne Greens candidate

CITY of Canada Bay’s Deputy Mayor Charles Jago - the Greens candidate in the NSW electorate of Drummoyne - says the NSW Liberal Government’s Concord Hospital upgrade is “too little, too late”.

Clr Jago said while it was “good to have something” it’s well short of what’s required given the urgent need for Concord Hospital upgrades.

“It is disappointing that the NSW Government has broken its promise to allocate $150 million for it over four years from 2015,” Clr Jago said.

“While every dollar spent towards improving local health services is worthwhile, the State

government has in fact only spent around $10 million in this term.”

Despite public complaints throughout 2016 that the Hospital was deteriorating very significantly, the government did not allocate funds for the project until the June 2017 budget.

Complaints included plaster falling off the walls, ceiling collapses, leaking roofs and finding a possum in an older part of the hospital.

“The older parts of the hospital require urgent attention. The next government, whether Labor or Liberal, must make a financial commitment to the next phase of redevelopment within the coming financial year,” Clr Jago said.

Building work already underway for Concord Hospital includes a new clinical services building for inpatient and outpatients in the Rusty Priest Centre for Rehabilitation of defence personnel and an aged care and cancer centre, with anticipated completion in 2021 at a cost totalling $341 million.

Clr Jago, who lives in Concord West, has a professional background that includes experience in information technology, community development, the electricity industry and as an adult educator.

He said the Greens provided an alternative voice to that of the major parties for voters wanting change in their political landscape and dissatisfied with the lack of response from the major parties.

“I strongly believe reducing carbon emissions and developing renewable energy sources will lower electricity prices and create employment,” he said.

Clr Jago is also the Greens candidate in the upcoming federal election for the seat of Reid.

The Conservatives encourage production of affordable, reliable and efficient use of all resources from coal-fired power stations, to hydro, nuclear and renewables.

Mr Busch said voters were also congratulating the stance being taken against against ‘political correctness’ by Australia’s newest political party.

And while sensing there were Labor voters in the electorate prepared to switch their vote to support him, considerable support was coming from disaffected former Liberal voters who believed the party no longer represented them or their traditional values.

He said Labor’s record on Ryde also “isn’t any good” and its community desperately needs common-sense representation.

THE state liberal government broke a major election promise when it told voters they would have more say over neighbouring developments, Labor candidate for Drummoyne Tom Hore said on Thursday.

Mr Hore said the broken promise on development is the key issue in his electorate with voters stunned to find they have been denied a say on developments which range from high rise in Rhodes to unexpected next door neighbour redevelopments in heritage suburbs like Drummoyne and Concord West.

He said the government funded “pro-developer” planning panels readily give approval to projects that meet a government criteria - regardless of community objections – while private certifier approvals have robbed councils and residents of the power to reject controversial home redevelopments.

“Inappropriate development and overdevelop are the big issues in this electorate and what is happening is the complete reverse of what was promised by government politicians at the last election,” he told The Weekly Times.

“Residents are waking up to find redeveloped homes going up right next door to where they live, taking away their privacy and overshadowing their backyards and

anything about it because it has been approved by a private certifier hired by a developer or approved by a planning panel.”

A TAFE teacher in Architectural Drafting, Mr Hore said the bigger the development, the smaller the opportunity to oppose it.

“We are looking at huge developments like the Rhodes East Development which was approved without any local infrastructure to support it and without even the expansion of the local railway station,” he said.

“My concern now is overdevelopment along Parramatta Road and Victoria Road as both of these roads are already at a standstill in peak hour.”

Of particular concern is the proposed expansion of the Gladesville Bridge Marina.

“It is proposed to be double the size of the current marina and local residents are strongly opposed to it because of the loss of on street parking, an increase in traffic, an increase in noise and the environmental impact it will have on the Parramatta River and the

who will have to navigate around it,” he said.

“I am supporting the residents’ protest campaign, absolutely!”

He said a Michael Daley led Labor government would stop the “pro-developer” policy of the Liberal government and is genuinely committed to giving constituents a meaningful say.

“Our first action will be to stop the spot rezoning this government has pushed through to benefit developers and then we will put planning powers back in the hands of councils and communities where people can once again have a say if they want to object to a high rise up the road or the overdevelopment next door to where they live.”

Mr Hore acknowledged the contribution made by his opponent, Liberal MP for Drummoyne John Sidoti in winning funding for Concord Hospital and his work to improve the Parramatta River foreshore but added it was too little, too late.

“The hospital development should have happened years ago and all that is happening there

due removal of hazardous material including asbestos,” he said.

“With the Parramatta River, Labor will go much further and create two new beaches.”

Labor will also focus on job creation in essential services that include health care and aged care.

“Michael Daley has announced 4,900 new jobs in the hospital sector alone and I’m delighted the Shadow Minister for TAFE Pru Car was in Ryde earlier this month to announce free TAFE courses in subjects like aged care and electrical trades,” he said.

“We need properly trained people in these vital services and these highly trained people deserve jobs.”

The Weekly Times asked Mr Hore how he sees himself as a new MP for Drummoyne.

“While I want to engage in policy in a Michael Daley government, I will put the needs of my constituents first and be out and about in the electorate.

“I’ll enthusiastically raise their issues in parliament but I’ll also be here to help

Council seeks your views on why tourists want to visit Parramatta

CITY of Parramatta Council has invited ratepayers to help shape visitor experiences.

The famous Parramatta Gateway welcomes visitors to Parramatta, many of whom come to explore the city’s heritage.

The Council this week released The Draft Destination Management Plan which proposes a framework for how government, businesses and industry partners can work together to improve visitor experiences and grow tourism across the Parramatta area.

“It sets the foundations for the next phase of the City’s growth,” the Council Management Plan team said.

“Over the next three to five years we will be challenged to manage

the needs, wants and aspirations of visitors to our city centre and neighbourhoods, both of which are experiencing significant development.

“The Draft plan advocates and champions the establishment of world-class visitor experiences and products at our heritage sites and green spaces, along with our unique food offering.”

The team said that while heritage and culture top the list of what visitors love about Parramatta, there could be other attractions that ratepayers would like to highlight.

“Did we miss anything?” the team asks.

“We’d like to know what you think about the objectives and direction of the Draft Destination Management Plan.

“Research about global tourism and trends in visitor experience formed the foundation for a series of roundtable conversations with government and industry stakeholders.

Some of them include Travellers seeking unique experiences.

“Individuals are happy to explore the littleknown local gems of places to catch a glimpse of the day-today of the places they visit. Increasingly, they

are spending money on experiences that make a place unique, rather than on products. “ Being able to live like a local in an Air BnB and be driven around by a local Uber driver adds a touch of authenticity to the local experience.”

The experience of solo travellers will also be considered.

“From mixed accommodation styles to experiences that suit a single traveller’s budget, going solo on adventures is on the rise globally.

“We are also interested in intergeneration experiences and increasingly, grandparents are seeking out experiences they can share whilst travelling with their grandchildren.”

Technology also plays a role. “ From navigation and planning experiences, to sharing travel experiences with friends on social media, or uploading a review of accommodation, digital tools are collecting information about the quality of holiday experiences.”

The Draft Destination Management Plan outlines five objectives to improve visitor experiences and grow tourism in Parramatta.

To achieve these objectives, three focus areas have been identified called Destination Experiences, Industry Development, and Destination Positioning and Promotion.

“Strategic directions have been set out for each focus area.” “ These are broken down into a series of actions to be implemented across three years from 2019-2022.

“Actions will be shared

by Council, business and industry partners and government agencies who will work together to meet the overarching objective of making Parramatta a unique destination that travellers want to visit.”

Winterlight Festival seeks talent

The City of Parramatta is calling for expressions of interest from Western Sydney musicians to perform at the Winterlight festival during July 5 to July 21.

Winterlight, Western Sydney’s biggest winter attraction, attracts up to 100,000 visitors annually across the two-week program.

Successful applicants will be notified by the end of March and have their act name appear on the event website as part of the program.

Six years ago in 2013, a leading Senior Constable lost his battle with an extremely aggressive form of cancer and passed away, leaving his wife and 4 young daughters under 12 years old then.

A charitable soccer match was organised

by Australian Asian Association of Bennelong {AAAB) with Eastwood Police, which ultimately raised $7,700 for the family.

Since then, the AAAB Harmony Soccer match has been held annually and is now in its seventh year.

The number of participating teams have increased from 2 to 10 to now include Ryde Police LAC, ANZ Bank, Medibank Private, Club Eastwood, Australian Chinese Soccer Association, Korean Soccer Association of

Sydney, United Community Centre@Ryde, RSC Community Soccer Team, AAAB Celebrity and AAAB United.

The AAAB Celebrity team will include Federal and State members of Parliament as well as Ryde councillors and community leaders.

Pre-Poll campaigners have been out in strength in Ryde and Lane Cove in particular where intensive campaigns have been lodged between Liberals and Labor in Ryde and between Liberal and Independent in Lane Cove.

In Ryde sitting Liberal MP Victor Dominello is being strongly contested by Labor’s Ryde mayor Jerome Laxale and in Lane Cove Liberals Anthony Roberts is being challenged by former Hunters Hill mayor and past Liberal Party executive member Richard Quinn standing as an Independent.

Mr Sidoti is the Liberal candidate for Drummoyne and is expected to retain his seat.

But he told The Weekly Times that nothing should be taken for granted in politics and stressed his major achievements in the last four years while urging voters not to “risk it” with Labor.

“The government has just delivered $340 million for the new hospital at Concord and work has already started on this massive project,” he said.

“Every single ferry wharf in the Drummoyne electorate has been redeveloped and every local railway station is now wheelchair accessible and more passenger friendly.

“We’ve invested heavily in road works and in public transport and one of the achievements I’m particularly proud of is that we now have on-demand buses in Five Dock and Concord, a massive improvement on what we had under Labor.”

He said his achievements in education and the environment secures the future for future generations.

“We’ve put record funding into schools with new schools at Lucas Gardens, Russell Lea Public School and Victoria Avenue Public School in Concord West.

“We’ve also delivered on our

promise to clean up the Parramatta River and there are fewer bottles and a lot less plastic waste on the foreshore.

“Our two local bottle recycling vending machines are heavily patronised and are among the best patronised in Sydney.”

Mr Sidoti also pointed to law and order as a “major example” of his government’s local track record.

“We’ve got more police than ever before in this electorate and this is reflected in the figures that show the local crime rate has gone down,” he said.

The Drummoyne MP said he is not impressed by what he blasted as Labor’s “scare campaign” on the over development issue.

“If you look at the areas where overdevelopment is an issue, such as Rhodes and Ryde, you have one common denominator in both and that is that you have Labor mayors in Canada Bay and the City of Ryde,” he said.

“I am committed to fighting overdevelopment, always and absolutely.”

His message to voters is straight forward.

“I will continue to deliver for the local community and I urge the community not to put this at risk by voting Labor.”

Statement by Richard Quinn in response to recent misleading Electoral Material Residents of Hunters Hill recently received a letter from Pamela Alvarez, dated 17 March 2019, which makes several false and misleading claims. In the letter, Ms Alvarez has failed to disclose her longterm membership of the Liberal Party. The letter was simply ‘authorised

by C. Stone’ - Mr Chris Stone is the State Director of the Liberal Party (NSW Division). This electoral material does not disclose that it was authorised, funded and distributed by the Liberal Party (NSW Division).

Two issues are raised in the misleading letter from Ms Alvarez - overdevelopment and remediation of a contaminated site in Nelson Parade. I have a proven and documented record of opposing overdevelopment and poor planning legislation.

Similarly, I have maintained a consistent position of an expeditious and full remediation of the contaminated Governmentowned site in Hunters Hill, and not onsite encapsulation of hazardous material.

I will not be controlled by any political party nor influenced by political lobbyists.

I strongly believe in transparency and full disclosure of government. Whilst clearly articulating my position on key issues, I will continue to act with integrity and treat all candidates fairly and honestly.

Bec Ho has been an advocate for the creation of all inclusive playgrounds in the City of Ryde and the City of Canada Bay as part of her work with the Touched By Olivia charity and was featured in last week’s edition of The Weekly Times advocating for an all inclusive playground in Hunters Hill.

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts described her achievements as inspiring and said he is thrilled she won this prestigious award.

“Bec Ho was chosen as Lane Cove Electorate’s 2019 Local Woman of the Year for her commitment as CEO to the national charity Touched By Olivia,” Mr Roberts said.

“Bec is passionate about creating places that give a sense of belonging to the community and are all-inclusive.

“Through this pas-

sion, inspiring Bec has also been a driving force in the creation of the “Everyone Can Play” guidelines and the use of those guidelines to build over $40 million of inclusive play spaces for those of all ages and abilities.

“She continues to be a passionate advocate for the local community and dedicates her time to improving the area for everybody.

Waterfront heritage venue an enchanting choice for wedding receptions

FORTY TWO years ago the historic Birkenhead Point industrial complex was saved in a multi-million dollar redevelopment that continues to be hailed as one of the world’s finest examples of heritage conservation architecture.

Hands and Feet: Have you lost your touch?

OUR nervous system sends information via electrical and chemical pathways to the brain and spinal cord and then distributes these signals to the rest of the body.

When the nerves are damaged and this signalling is working we call this neuropathy.

This can occur when no message is sent, like a broken wire, signally when there shouldn’t be signals like ringing in your ear or when a completely wrong signal is sent.

These issues typically affect the extremities.

The most common symptoms of neuropathy include feelings of numbness, tingling, dullness, burning and weakness.

Should you notice any of these symptoms it is important that you discuss them with your GP and your podiatrist.

Podiatrists are often the first step when these symptoms occur in the feet and legs.

They can carry out neurological assessments to identify your risk of foot complications and assess changes to your sensation, muscle weakness and gait abnormalities, which can be associated with neuropathy.

Neuropathy can be caused by many things including chronic alcoholism, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, drug induced; including chemotherapy, hereditary disorders, infection or inflammatory disease, poor diet and vitamin B12 deficiency, kidney

failure, back issues or surgery and trauma and in some cases the cause is unknown.

There are three main types of nerves that can affect the feet and hands and cause neuropathy: motor, sensory and autonomic.

Motor nerves send information from the brain and spine to the muscles to enable movement and activities such as walking, running, swimming and writing.

When there is damage to the motor nerves this may lead to muscle weakness, cramps, spasms, difficulty walking or moving body parts.

Autonomic nerves control functions that we don’t think about including our heart rate, sweat glands, blood pressure, and digestion.

Damage to these nerves is known as autonomic neuropathy and people who suffer with this may have difficulty swallowing, decreased sweating and incontinence issues.

Specifically, this can cause increased dryness to the hands and feet and lead to cracked skin.

Sensory nerves send information from the muscles and skin to the brain and spinal cord this enables us to identify feelings such as hot, cold, sharp and blunt.

This can be very dangerous as it means we can sustain injury without realising and may lead to serious foot complications such as ulcerations and amputation if not properly managed.

This is often seen among children and in most cases will resolve without treatment as the child grows.

And this is why it’s less commonly seen in adults.

Intoeing may initially cause a child to trip but should reduce over time.

Tibial Torsion is the twisting of the shin bone and causes the ankle and foot to turn inwards.

As the child grows the tibia untwists and the feet begin to face forward.

Tibial torsion normally resolves naturally by school age without treatment.

In rare cases, when there is severe torsion and the child is having significant gait abnormalities surgery may be carried out to re-align the bones.

Femoral Anteversion is the twisting of the thigh bone named the femur causing the whole leg and foot to turn inward.

Femoral Anteversion is most obvious between ages 5-6 and these children often sit in the ‘W’ shape with knees bent and pointing inward and the feet flaring to the sides.

They are also more likely to sleep on their stomach, with the legs rotating inward into the intoe position.

The femur will realign with growth and normal gait pattern should reappear between 8-10 years of age.

Surgery is very invasive and only considered in

severe cases to re-set the femur.

Metarsus Adductus is the banana or curved shape foot most commonly recognised by looking at the outside border of the foot. It is the where the front of the foot is bent inward compared to the heel.

Normally the outside border of the foot is straight.

This is usually identified in the first 6-9 months and is more pronounced in children whom walk

very early and will normally resolve by age 3.

In some cases, children may need special exercises, bracing or shoe inserts.

Treatment for more advanced conditions may comprise of serial casting and a small portion may require surgical intervention.

It is important to be assessed to determine presence of Metarsus adductus and needs to be monitored by GP, podiatrist or physiothera-

pist.

Intoeing very common in children and is normally nothing to worry about.

In the majority of cases, children will improve as they grow without treatment.

Some cases may need mild intervention and ongoing monitoring. Intoeing should never be painful, cause a limp, have associated swelling or appear to get worse.

Demountables to go from Epping West Public School DEMOUNTABLE buildings are being removed from Epping West Public School.

The removal was announced by Treasurer and Liberal candidate for Epping Dominic Perrottet , Education Minister Rob Stokes and Epping MP Damien Tudehope who said 29 demountable buildings would be removed and replaced with contemporary, permanent buildings.

Member for Epping Damien Tudehope said he had advocated tirelessly for this outcome and was thrilled students would now have more playground space to enjoy.

“Epping West Public has seen incredible growth in enrolments in recent years and I am so pleased that I can tell students, parents and teachers that in the next term of government these

demountable classrooms will be gone and replaced by modern, flexible, air-conditioned buildings,” Mr Tudehope said.

“This is only possible because of the government’s strong budget position, which is allowing us to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Mr Perrottet said Epping West Public students would benefit from improved access to playground space.

“This commitment will deliver adaptive classrooms while also providing them with more room to move in the playground,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Whether it is at recess or lunch more students will be able to get out onto the handball court or kick a ball

around on the oval with their mates thanks to this commitment.”

Education Minister Rob Stokes agreed.

“The real benefit of this is that it allows demountables to be rapidly removed from valuable playground space and be replaced by sustainable buildings with minimal disruption, with many of the elements built off-site and delivered to schools so learning and teaching is not interrupted,” Mr Stokes said.

“The new buildings will provide Epping West Public with the flexibility to reconfigure their facilities if the needs of the school change over time – a benefit we just don’t have with many of our traditional fixed school buildings.”

Loving Gladesville cats seek families for adoption

A MOTHER cat and her kitten have found a loving family thanks to a promotion in The Weekly Times.

Abba and Andy the kitten were part of a group of cats that were on show in Bondi Junction last month as part of Gladesville’s World League for the Protection of Animals promotion and were later adopted.

The other kittens are still to find homes and Anna Hall from the World League said families can visit them

at the cat adoption centre showroom on the corner of Victoria Road and Cowell Street in Gladesville.

“Thank you so very much The Weekly Times for coming out to Bondi Junction on a Saturday to support us,” she said.

“The article titled “Mummy, can we please adopt a kitten?’ means a lot to our volunteers and other animal supporters.

“It is so encouraging to see the independent press supporting local organisations and it is to be hoped that the publicity gener-

ated will help the kittens in this photo who are not yet adopted find a loving home.

“Readers can of course always arrange an appointment to visit the beautiful ones in the Gladesville adoption centre.”

Emerging Ryde athletes to test their skills at National Track & Field Championships

RYDE Athletics Club will showcase twelve of their best senior athletes at next month’s Australian Track & Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

Bristling with talent, the Ryde contingent are confident of representing NSW with distinction and bringing home medals from the prestigious championships to be staged from April 1 to 7.

Traditionally the Ryde club boasts enormous depth in the middle distance events - many of whom train under master coach Ross Forster - and this year’s squad is no exception.

Leading the pack is Jacob Leon, a 201819 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year finalist and triple 2019 NSW Junior medallist.

Despite qualifying for the 3000m, 1500m and 800m Jacob has wisely chosen to focus his energies on the Under 16 800m and 1500m double.

Georgia Arcus will also run two middle distance events after qualifying for the Under 16 800m and 3000m.

At the ripe age of 15 Amelie Sun just missed out recently on making the NSW Open Women’s final of the 1500m by just .21 sec.

She’ll now take her good form into a full program of the Under 16 3000m, 1500m and 800m events.

Samantha Brown will run in the Under 20 800m while Arabella Price is set to make her national debut as NSW

Under 16 title holder in the U/16 2000m Steeplechase after improving 25 seconds over the season.

A silver medal at the NSW All Schools and a bronze at the NSW Juniors in the U/16 2000m Steeplechase ensured Adam Bruntsch’s spot on the NSW team for the steeplechase.

Sophie Gocher, who represented Australia in the Steeplechase at the Oceania Games in 2018 and won the 2019 NSW Junior U/20 title, will compete in the 3000m Steeplechase.

Ryde will field three jumpers including two who won medals at last year’s national championships in Zoe Warland and Alyssa Lowe. Zoe, the Loreto Normanhurst Sports Captain, leads by example after qualifying for the Under 18 long jump and 100m hurdles.

Alyssa, the 2018 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Encouragement Award winner, is in top form after collecting three silver medals at the NSW Juniors Championships and will contest the U/17 long jump, triple jump and 100m hurdles.

Sam Galati jumped himself into a spot on the NSW team when he won bronze in the Under 18 triple jump at the NSW Juniors.

Hunters Hill rugby search for 1969 premiership star Tyrone ‘Bronco’ Cosgrove

FIFTY years ago Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club captured the Whiddon Cup in the Metropolitan Sub District Rugby Union competition.

To celebrate this premiership milestone, club officials have planned a reunion for team members on Saturday April 27 at Boronia Park Oval.

This date coincides with Hunters Hill’s first home game of the 2019 season and officials believe there are about 12 players from that triumphant 1969 team that they know are still alive and with whom they’re in contact.

and Wallaby centre John Francis was approached and accepted a coaching position the following year.

Francis brought to the Club an energy, discipline and attitude that changed the Hunters Hill rugby landscape and probably influenced many other Subbies clubs.

Hunters Hill became the first Subbies team to train twice weekly and others gradually followed.

Under Francis, the Hunters Hill club won the 1971 Barraclough and then several other Cups during the 1970s to reign supreme in Sub Districts rugby.

A dubious honour, but those in the 1969 premiership team still with us are probably Hunters Hill’s oldest living senior Cup winners.

The previous Cup win before that was in 1955, nearly 65 years

ago, and officials aren’t aware of any living members.

Club legend Terry Laundry said the club hoped to make contact with Tyrone and get him along to the reunion at Boronia Park Oval to relive the good old days.

TIDE TURNS IN NSW ELECTIONThe Coalition has again emerged as a clear favourite for Saturday’s NSW State Election with Sportsbet.

Prior to the weekend the Coalition was $1.87 and Labor $1.95. After receiving a wave of support the Coalition is now $1.78 and Labor has eased out to $2.05.

The Greens ($3.75) hold on Ballina has slipped with the Coalition $2.00 favourites to win the seat ahead of Labor ($2.25). All the money is for Labor ($1.65) in Lismore where seat holders, the Coalition, are $4.25 outsiders.

“As the see-sawing nature of the betting shows the NSW election is going to be a tight battle. It has swung back in the Coalition’s favour, but with the countdown on that could change,’’ says Rich Hummerston.



What is killing Putney’s ducks?

PUTNEY children have been distressed to find more dead ducks in local Lardelli Park pond.

Around eight ducks have been found to have died of botulism in the pond where signs have been erected warning children not to feed the ducks bread and to keep dogs away from the water.

Lardelli Park resident Mario Milo spoke of his horror at finding one of the ducks last week, in the water next to the childrens’ playground “My daughter and I found it,” he said.

“This duck was still alive and was desperately trying to quack for help.

“We rushed it to the Gladesville Vet but it had to be put down.”

The vet confirmed it had died of botulism and was the latest to have died in traumatic circumstances.

“We had two beautiful white ducks who died, which was tragic because locals had even built a shelter for them,” he said.

The City of Ryde Council issued a statement on Friday where it confirmed an investigation into why the ducks are dying.

The council statement did not blame their suspicious death on bread and it is not known who put up the warning signs.

“This is considered to be the result of the drought and issues with poor water quality,” the council statement said.

“Council is engaging an environmental consultant to investigate and in the interim local residents are advised to avoid the area especially when walking their dogs.”

Mr Milo said the vet had told him the botulism could be caused by storm water entering the pond during recent heavy rainfull.

But Clr Roy Maggio wants the council to investigate what he describes as the “poor maintenance” of the grounds around the park and the possible use of chemicals.

“The council is soon to take ownership of this park from Fraser’s Property and I will move a motion that we refuse to accept the land in the poor condition it is in,” he said.

“The gardens around the pond seem to have been decimated

by someone using a ride-on mower and while I’m not sure a chemical has been used I think we should investigate all possible causes.

Recent studies in Britain have shown that bread does not harm ducks and helps them build bulk for the winter.

“Blaming the ducks’ deaths on bread is totally wrong and it is totally unfair to put the blame on children feeding them bread,” Clr Maggio said.

Mr Milo said he has lived beside the park for five years and that it had deteriorated since November.

“There is now algae growing in the pond, it is that bad,” he said.

“What is killing the ducks is not the bread !”

“In fact, people have been feeding bread to the ducks for the five years I’ve been here with no harm done at all.”

Mr Milo believes there is a way to save the remaining ducks.

“All you need to do is introduce Australian Silver Bream fish because they help clean the water,” he said.

NSW honours for gun track cyclists

EMERGING Concord cyclist Keira Will is right on course for national gold after superb performances in elite competition on the cycling track.

Thirteen year old Keira is one of three local cyclists to gain selection in the NSW team after dominating the recent State Junior Track Championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome in Bass Hill - collecting five gold medals and a silver in a tremendous achievement.

The Concord High student also underlined her potential when she finished first in the Under 15 Womens National Junior Track Series held in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

It will be Keira’s second stint in the NSW Junior Cycling team and she’ll be joined by another Concord native Jaydan StantonKeir, 14; Putney 13 year old Kai Goltman and Sarah Allwork,13, of Regents Park.

All four are products of the Lidcombe-Auburn Cycle Club and collectively won 17 medals (five gold, eight silver and four bronze) at the NSW Junior Championships to cap an exceptional summer track

series.

They are now gearing up for the National Junior Track Championships to be staged in Brisbane later this month.

Sarah, a Trinity Catholic College student, is competing in her first year in the J15 categories.

She won two silver medals for Individual Pursuits and Points Race and two bronze medals for Sprints and Keirin races at the State Championships and finished fourth in Under 15 women at NJTS. Kai, who attends Holy Cross College Ryde, is also in his first year in J15 categories and snapped up three silver medals for Time Trial, Individual Pursuit and Points race plus two bronze medals for Scratch race and Sprints at the State titles.

He finished fifth in Under 15 men at NJTS. Jaydan, a Newington College student, is the sprinter of this group.

The 14 years old won two silver medals for Sprints and Scratch race at the State titles and

claimed tenth spot in Under 15 men at NJTS. These outstanding juniors are part of Lidcombe Auburn Cycle Club’s Junior Development Team, each of whom train or race between five to six times a week, with the ongoing challenge of balancing school work, school sport and their love of cycling.

The success of these juniors is a result of over six years of hard work at the club, largely at Lidcombe Oval (Wyatt Park), where they learnt the essential skills of riding in a safe environment, before putting those skills to use on track and road.

As members of the club, juniors are provided coaching and loaned bikes to support the development of their riding skills. And if they want to further hone their skills, they are also able to take part in local, regional and interstate racing (both with LACC and in other club or State open events).

Of course, the juniors would not have succeeded without the effort

and support put in by the LACC coaches (Pierre Dubier and Phil Dobe), parents / helpers, and club sponsors Dooleys Catholic Club and Ashfield Cycles.

With Cycling NSW, Lidcombe Auburn Cycling Club is running a Come & Try Cycling Day on Saturday April 27 during the school holidays.

This is a free event, where kids aged from 4 to 16 years are welcome to come to the Dunc Gray Criterium Track, Bass Hill and have a go at cycling.

There’ll be qualified coaches to teach the kids cycling skills in this closed track. For more information about Come & Try Day, Junior development and training, contact Linda Allwork, LACC Junior Coordinator, at juniors@ lacc.org.au.

For those wanting to progress their children’s cycling further, LACC hosts junior training at Lidcombe Oval, Wyatt Park every Wednesday, followed by Open training for older kids and adults.

Unsung keeper Beau gives value for Tigers

FOR sheer tenacity and natural ability they don’t come more valuable than Sydney Cricket Club’s unheralded wicket keeper Beau McClintock (pictured).

The former Canberra native has established himself as one of the leading glovemen in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition with skilful performances behind the stumps and with the bat during the 201819 season.

McClintock has proved one of the unsung heroes in a Tigers’ team that recently captured the Limited Overs First Grade Cup trophy and is chasing a Grand Final berth in a qualifying final against Sydney University this weekend at University Oval.

It has been a summer to savour for young McClintock, who is the leading keeper in terms of dismissals completed in Premier Cricket this season.

He has racked up 45 dismissals including 35 catches and ten stumpings but has also produced fine form with the bat during the Tigers’ finals charge.

Last Saturday McClintock showed his combative qualities when he top scored for Sydney with a belligerent knock of 71 off 110 balls in a rain-marred qualifying final draw with North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.

The talented number seven clouted nine boundaries to help Sydney register a total of 200 after the visitors were sent in to bat in gloomy conditions.

The Tigers were reeling at 7-121 before McClintock and all rounder Alex Glendenning combined for a crucial eighth wicket stand of 61.

It swelled McClintock’s season run tally to 400 runs including an impressive 283 from his past five innings.

Rookie opener Liam Scott gave the Tigers a flying start by thumping five boundaries in a dashing knock of 24 before he was caught by Adam Crosthwaite off the bowling of swing merchant James Campbell with 36 runs on the board.

Sydney’s prolific number three Matthew Rodgers compiled a valuable 37 off 99 balls to keep the Tigers in the hunt Campbell (4-46 off 18 overs) and quicks Matt Alexander (4-52 off 18) and Oliver

Opener Ben Bryant (9) was the next batsman to depart - caught by Tigers’ star Ben Manenti off the bowling of all rounder Ryan Felsch (112 off five) as the Bears lost their second wicket with only 23 runs on the board.

When quick bowler Glendenning (1-12 off five) bowled NSW batsman and North Sydney skipper Justin Avendano for 16, the home side were in a spot of bother at 3-48.

Heavy rain washed out the entire second day’s play with both the higher ranked Tigers and Bears advancing to the semi finals and Parramatta and Sutherland bowing out of the title race following draws with Penrith

and Sydney University respectively.

The Tigers square off with minor premiers Sydney University in a Grand Final qualifier this weekend at Sydney University Oval while the Panthers host UTS-North Sydney at Howell Oval.

MEANWHILE Sydney advanced to the second grade semi finals following a nine wicket drubbing of Bankstown at Drummoyne Oval.

Swing and spin were the ingredients for victory as the Tigers’ quartet of Nick Govers (3-22 off nine), Cameron Holmes (3-27 off eight) and spinners Ash Squire (2-3 off seven) and Ben Mitchell (2-20 off 13) helped rout Bankstown for 90 in the 43rd over.

An unbeaten 53 by Liam Gibson that featured seven boundaries helped steer the Tigers to a winning score of 1-100 in convincing style.

Gibson was supported by the talented Justin Mosca (28) with the pair posting an opening stand of 54 before keeper Matt Kent (13 not out) joined forces for an unbroken second wicket partnership of 46 that sealed a resounding win.

FOOTY TIPSTERS

AFTER a 43 year career that spanned an incredible 900 games, Ryde Eastwood Hawks Touch Football pioneer Ron White has hung up his boots in a blaze of glory.

The evergreen Hawks’ icon bowed out in style as a player last week when he helped Boronia Park Framing capture the Open Division 3 premiership at the Association Grand Finals staged at Morrison Park Putney.

A former Hawks’ Association president and current patron, 77 year old Ron capped a decorated playing career by inspiring the Boronia boys to a pulsating 13-12 victory over West Ryde Thai Massage.

It was a fourth premiership for super fit Ron from seven Grand Final appearances and he goes out on top having nabbed a spectacular try after fooling the West Ryde defence with a jinking 30 metre run, leaving an exasperated Paul Robinson - the Association’s Mr Touch - grasping at thin air.

Having announced his retirement on the eve of the Grand Final, the local sporting legend received a standing ovation from fellow players, officials and supporters after being sent out a proud winner.

An emotional White was humbled by the number of people who turned up to watch his last game and the many who formed a guard of honour as he ran onto the field at the start of the match.

Long serving Ron was a driving force behind the establishment of

the Ryde Eastwood Touch Football competition back in 1976 along with fellow life members and local identities Col Hallinan senior, Ross Patten, John Christoffersen and Don Bollard and has played every year since.

Whilst his playing days may be now behind him, Ron assured everyone in his retirement speech that he would still be down at the grounds each Monday night helping out as he has done for all these years.

Ryde Eastwood Asociation is very proud of the fact that they have one of the largest Women’s touch football competitions in the State and this year operated two Divisions.

Touchy Feely making their debut in the competition reversed a series of losses during the preliminary rounds to overcome fellow debutants Code Red Angels 8-5 in a hard fought Division 1 title decider.

This match was of an extremely high quality and sets the benchmark for other teams to try and achieve in future years.

In Division 2, the Tiger Cubs proved too strong for Housewives of Putney - running out comfortable winners 23-4.

In the Division 5 Opens clash, The Barrys blitzed the Ron Ryan led Ryan Wilks 3s by 11-6 to lift the trophy.

All in all, another successful season for the Ryde Eastwood Hawks Touch Football Association.

The number of teams participating was at capacity and the feeling among the participants was that they can’t wait for the start of the next series.

Luckily those players won’t have to wait until next summer as the Association has been successful in obtaining field time for a winter competition which will take place on Monday nights at Meadowbank Park.

Benji and Robbie Blitz Silvertails!

Tigers club favourites and Golden Oldies Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah spearheaded the Tigers opening round win over the Manly Silvertails at Leichhardt Oval HQ in the rain on Saturday arvo.

By the one-eyed Tiger Robbie lead by example scoring two of the club’s three tries and nearly completed a try trifecta.

Benji was back to his magical best calling the shots with 2018 Dally M half Luke Brooks as they made mincemeat of their hapless Silvertails from across the harbour bridge sending them packing back with their tails between their tiny wings.

Tigers new supercoach Michael “Madge” Maguire was naturally delighted with his charges performance and dedication to duty and instructions.
