Members in uproar

Club Ryde board has given Bowling Club members notice that they will close the vintage bowling club on September 2 despite protestations from club members.

The Ryde ExServices Phoenix Bowling Club has been an intricate part of the Ryde ExServices club now known as Club Ryde from its earliest days.

The club met in premises later known as Il Vicolo in Church Street Ryde holding chocolate wheels Saturday mornings to raise funds before moving the to current Victoria Road site in early 1960s.

Ryde Ex Mens Bowling Club President and Life Member Larry Stansfield says bowling club members have played a large part in the life of the Ryde Ex Club since the very early days.

Larry says the Ryde Ex club had a board of directors election in 2017 and everyone gave a verbal promise to continue supporting lawn bowls.

Now recently the Board informed the bowlers it was costing too much to pay a greenkeeper to maintain the greens.

“We responded with a qualified greenkeeper in our membership who offered to do the job for free”.

“For some inexplicable reason the Ryde Ex board dismissed the offer”.

Also the board took away from bowlers a bar staff member on Wednesday when members play bowls.

It is sad when board members cannot see how important the bowls club is to so many people for fellowship, camaraderie and stopping loneliness.

The question is: who gets the money if and when this great club is sold?

Larry invited all bowling club members an d old bowlers to join him and other members for drinks at the club before it closes on September 2.

Letters to the Editor Urgent need for streetlight repair Dear Sir, I am writing on behalf of residents in the Cox’s Road / Marilyn Street area of North Ryde to request your assistance to make representations to AusGrid regarding a streetlight which has not been repaired for more than four months!

I am aware that several reports have been made by my neighbours and colleagues during these four months but unfortunately no repairs have been done.

The non-functional light in question is along the concrete walkway that links Cox’s Road to Marilyn Street and runs between the North Ryde Library and the Commonwealth Bank.

It has Pole Number: GL33344 and the location, as listed on the AusGrid website, is 211 Cox’s Road, North Ryde NSW 2113, Australia.

This walkway is very well utilised by the residents in the area as it provides passage to the Cox’s Road Mall.

The most frequent users are senior citizens, retirees and the disabled.

With the walkway unlighted and with early nightfall in winter, these elderly pedestrians struggle in the dark.

It is hoped that no falls, accidents or fractures will occur with medicolegal consequences.

We appeal for your kind assistance to make representations for the necessary repairs.

Council ‘building a Financial hole’?

Dear Sir,

I think Ryde Council is building a hole for itself over its plans for this Heart of Ryde project.

I am not talking the excavations down below ground level to get to the proposed Plaza and then down further to the proposed Community Centre (with all the flights of ornate stairs down each level) but of the financial hole.

With the Council advice that it will be plunged into debt over this project and reliant on property developer contributions to get

itself out the question is what happens if something goes wrong?

If a recession or political factors stops the excessive overdevelopment of Ryde (reducing developer contributions), or building costs blow out (like the ALPs non-existent Parramatta –Chatswood Rail Link, remnants of which run through the northern part of Ryde and cost $2,300 million) then there are problems.

I can’t see Mayor Laxale asking Victor Dominello MP for help to get more property development if contributions slow down.

The Laxale Administration tells us in its FAQ that this project will not “require any cuts to be made to essential services.”

I don’t know what is on that essential services list but I guess it means that everything else Council provides could be on the chopping block if and when this project goes ahead.

US Politics not welcome here Dear Sir, As a regular reader of the TWT Letters to the Editor and a sometimes contributor, I was somewhat surprised to see several letters published over the past two weeks from organisations that I would not have expected to see appear in a small independently owned local newspaper.

However, they would have been right at home in the Murdoch press.

Both were attacking well known public figures, Labor Senator Kristine Keneally and former Australian of the Year and noted philanthropist, Dick Smith.

The first letter published in the TWT 31/7/2019 “Thanks Dick for tax generosity” was a somewhat sarcastic and disingenuous attack by “Australian Taxpayers Alliance” (ATA) on Dick Smith over comments he had made relating to the franking credits tax refund issue.

The second letter, TWT 7/8/2019 “Keneally attack on conservatives” was submitted by the “Conservative Political Action Conference” (CPAC).

It attacked Senator Kristine Keneally over her request to the Federal Government to refuse visas to several international

speakers CPAC wanted to bring to Australia to speak at its inaugural Australian conference.

My research reveals that ATA is a centre right and CPAC a hard right conservative activist group and both have connections to US political donors.

CPAC is backed by the American Conservative Union which has strong links to the US National Rifle Association (NRA).

It is credited with launching the political career of Donald Trump.

ATA has connections with US billionaires David and Charles Koch, key manipulators and influencers of US politics, who donate millions of dollars to libertarian and conservative lobby groups and the US Republican Party.

The founder of ATA resides in Washington DC and is a protégé of the Koch Institute.

A potential and unwelcome outcome of the rising influence of groups like CPAC and ATA in Australia is a strengthened conservative lobbying force that uses social issues in a culture war to achieve libertarian economic goals.

If this happens Australian politics could become more divisive, as these US inspired views, some quite extreme, are imported here.

The shambles that is US politics, rife with manipulation and unduly influenced by pressure from wellresourced lobby groups such as the NRA, should not be welcomed here.

It has delivered a deeply divided America.

We should be concerned about any hijacking of the mainstream in Australia by such malevolent politics.

New bus shelters will be provided in the coming weeks. Message signed General Manager HHC and dated May 21 2019. This message was left in the places where a number of bus shelters were removed about ten weeks ago.

Why were the bus shelters removed “before the process of engaging new bus shelter providers was completed”? How much longer will we have to wait for new shelters?

Could we please have temporary seating where these shelters (which included seats) used to be?

I am a 72 year old Hunter’s Hill ratepayer who seriously injured herself last October when I slipped and fell on a Telecom metal plate after a light rain shower near the intersection of Bateman’s Road and Makinson Street, Gladesville.

This fall led to my having to have major shoulder surgery.

At the time HH Council referred me to Telstra who apparently own the plate. All I have received from Telstra is an acknowledgement of my message.

The accident happened in early October 2018.

As result of this accident I have pain when I have to stand for any length of time.

There are many local residents who have similar or much worse physical problems than mine and who depend solely on public transport.

I have a car and have been able to drive since my injured shoulder healed.

The Council apologised in it’s notice on the bus stops for “any inconvenience” the removal of the bus shelters may have caused.

In my opinion the problem is more than inconvenience to many people.

Road Condition Inspection of our Municipality HUNTERS HILL Council are undertaking an assessment of the municipality’s 50 km network of sealed roads.

We have engaged an independent service consultancy to provide inventory and condition assessment for road pavements, kerb and gutter, footpaths and other road related public infrastructure assets.

The first stage is to assess the Road condition survey in early September.

This is undertaken by a highly sophisticated survey vehicle which simultaneously scan the entire road surface with multiple laser measuring devices and high resolution video imaging in a single pass.

The data collected from the survey will form a data bank and provide accurate analysis and reporting on surface defects, condition scores, including sensor measured roughness ( road longitudinal profile), rutting ( road cross sectional profile) and condition of Kerb and Guttering. In November an assessment of footpaths will occur.

Hunters Hill’s housing code is being deferred

A PROPOSED low rise medium density code for Hunters Hill has been deferred until November.

The deferral means that landowners in Hunters Hill will not be able to use a proposed code to lodge a development application for dual occupancies, manor houses or terraces until the November deadline.

It also means that during the deferral period the council’s local planning controls will continue to apply.

Under these controls, landowners may lodge a development application for a dual occupancy or multi dwelling housing in

areas of the municipality where these types of housing are allowed under the council local environment plan.

Heritage listed areas of Hunters Hill will continue to be subject to the council heritage controls.

“Council was notified that The Deputy Secretary of the Department of Planning Marcus Ray announced the deferral of the Low Rise Medium Density Housing Code with an ex-

tension for 45 Councils until October 31 in order for an independent review to be conducted,” the website announced.

“This extension was due to the existing one year deferral being set to expire.

“The independent review is being conducted by Professor Roberta Ryan and she is expected to give her report to the Minister of Planning.

A Hunters Hill woman is assaulted in local street

A SHOCKING assault on a Hunters Hill woman in Gladesville last week was witnessed by pedestrians.

Acting on witness reports police later arrested a 45 year old Hunters Hill man who is alleged to have punched the 55 woman in the face after a confrontation on Pittwater Road, Gladesville around 8.35 am on Saturday.

Police report they live in the same building and the woman approached the man to recover what she believed was money owed.

It is then alleged the man punched the woman -

causing her nose to bleed - before walking away.

The man was seen by police on Pittwater Road in Gladesville around 4pm and he was charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.

He will now appear in Burwood Local Court in October. **** A MACHETE was allegedly found on a man arrested in Maquarie Park on Monday.

Police report the 35 centimetre machete was found on the 28 year old when searched by police in Trafalgar Place around 12.50am in response to a

radio message that a knife wielding man was roaming the area.

When searched, police allegedly found a credit card that may have been stolen as well as items purchased with the credit card.

The search also found a container filled with coins that appeared to look similar to a tip jar used by a restaurant.

He was charged with three counts of Goods In Custody and Custody Of A Knife In A Public Place.

He was given conditional bail and is now due to appear in Burwood Local Court next month.

Ryde residents have a change of heart over Civic Centre A GROUP of Ryde residents - strongly opposed to a previous proposal for a twin tower, civic and residential complex to replace the Ryde Civic Centre - has come out in support of the new Heart of Ryde civic centre proposal.

The Dunbar Street residents led local resident objections to the previous twin towers proposal and spokesman Phil Peake remembers the frosty reception they received from twin tower advocate and former Mayor Colonel Bill Pickering.

Mr Peake and the vocal group of residents were at the site on Thursday to give conditional approval to this new concept for the civic centre , which has no residential apartments and will be wholly owned and used by the community.

“This new concept is a one thousand per cent improvement over the previous proposals,” Mr Peake said.

“While we are yet to see a final concept plan we consider this new concept to be a once in a multi-generational opportunity to really leave Ryde with a fantastic social asset that will bring the community together.

“The whole of Ryde will benefit from a first class and dedicated community facility.”

Mr Peake and the residents also backed

proposals from The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth AM to have government and community services based in the new building as well as improved pedestrian access to neighbouring Top Ryde City shopping plaza.

“If Ryde City Council can stick with the proposed plan and also upgrade the pedestrian concourses then it will be a huge improvement to the area,” Mr Peake said.

The residents also hope the new building will have outdoor open space and enough parking space to ensure that visitors do not need to park in residential streets.

Mr Peake reflected on the campaign to oppose the previous, twin tower proposal and spoke for the first time about the stress he was subjected too when he opposed it at council meetings.

“I went through a lot of grief and so did so many other local residents,” he said.

“This new concept is giving the community an opportunity to have a meaningful say and that is a big, big difference.”

For Dunbar Street resident Barry Smith the previous proposal was a huge stuff up that cost ratepayers money when staff were moved from the civic centre to rented offices in Macquarie Park.

“Paying millions to rent offices is just dumb, absolutely dumb,” he said.

“So obviously we are keen to see council staff back here, to stop renting offices and to just get on with the job.”

Other local residents who spoke to The Weekly Times are in favour of a new civic centre that offers views to the city, as long as there is no overshadowing or loss of mobile phone reception.

The City of Ryde’s Draft Children’s Play Plan is on public exhibition for review and community comment.

The aim of the Play Plan is to ensure that all families within the City of Ryde have access to safe, accessible and high quality playgrounds.

Meadowbank skateboard park starts a Sydney wide trend MEADOWBANK’S skateboard park has influenced a Sydney wide boom in skateboard park construction.

The boom coincides with the debut of skateboarding as an official sport at 2020 Tokyo Olympics and there are now skateboard parks proposed for Rushcutters Bay and St Peters.

Construction of a skateboard at Leichhardt Park in Glebe - financed the Inner West Council – is underway and expected to open early next year.

The boom has been welcomed by City of Ryde Clr Roy Maggio who first proposed the Meadowbank skateboard park several years ago as an alternative recreational activity for children who do not want to play a team sport.

But this is only half the story because what Clr Maggio has seen since the Meadowbank Park opened this year has impressed him.

“What we could have reasonably expected was competition to use the skateboard park but instead we have seen a tremendous respect skate-

boarders have shown to each other, with patience and understanding,” he said.

“What has been particularly striking is the respect and care shown for the very youngest children and this respect and care shows that we can be very proud of our young skateboarders.

“They are an example of all that is commendable about young people today and for their sense of fair play and sportsmanship.”

Although a few users have set a bad example by damaging equipment and disturbing neighbours with loud noise late at night, Clr Maggio says that they are by no means typical.

“Something else I’ve noticed is that the skateboard park has become a family venue, an opportunity for young mums and dads to socialise while the children enjoy this fun and healthy outdoor activity.

“I am so impressed I would like to see more

skateboard parks.”

The boom in skateboarding has prompted debate on social media with supporters and critics.

Perhaps the best informed is Griffith University Associate Professor Graham Bradley, whose research has found that skateboarding fostered positive behaviour such as cooperation and physical skills and helped young people achieve a sense of identity and self-confidence.

Councillor Maggio agreed.

“Young people will skateboard and up until we built this skate park they were skateboarding in shopping malls, where they were not welcome and in some cases were seen as doing something anti-social.”

One parent whose children enjoy the park made the point that it fosters multiculturalism with skateboarders drawn from all of Ryde’s cultural communities.

Parramatta River project protects biodiversity

PARRAMATTA River Catchment Group has launched a project to protect wildlife.

Known as The Native Habitat Recovery in the Parramatta River Catchment Project, it aims to expand, restore and manage the extent

of native habitats in the fragmented landscapes of the Parramatta River catchment area.

The project has been made possible through

a NSW Environmental Trust grant and involves a number of project partners including the City of Canada Bay, Hunters Hill, the City

“Using a regional, multi-stakeholder approach the Parramatta River Catchment Group will continue a species richness study of the fauna that make up a vital part of vegetation communities,” the Project team said.

“Using this knowledge, high priority sites and potential corridors will be identified and targeted for on-ground restoration and expansion, linking these communities across the landscape.”

The third phase will deliver targeted biodiversity awareness training to council outdoor staff whose work may impact on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity.

“Strategically approaching biodiversity, particularly native habitat restoration, at a landscape level is not consistently being undertaken in the Parramatta River catchment leaving many sites as isolated islands within the urban environment,” the team said.

“These sites become increasingly vulnerable to impacts such as weed and feral animal infestation, genetic

seclusion due to reproductive restrictions, the effects of climate change, and local extinction.

“In addition, the Parramatta River catchment has one of the highest rates of human population growth in Australia.

“With the ongoing pressures of urban consolidation, these vitally important areas of native habitat require a strategic, catchmentwide management approach to ensure their ongoing survival.

“Identifying and establishing key linkages between these remnant sites provides a critical stepping stone for nomadic fauna species moving between core areas of habitat.”

A major focus is vegetation.

“Vegetation communities co-exist with the fauna that inhabit and symbiotically sustain them.

“There is an increasing number of studies within the scientific literature to suggest that approaching restoration from the perspective of fauna diversity and abundance is equally important and a potentially more responsive and strategic method of managing biodiversity.”

Cathy Merchant from the Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society was at the Moocooboola Festival in Boronia Park to promote the habitat recovery project for the Parramatta River.

New heart of Parramatta a step closer to the dream come true

A PROPOSED landmark civic building in Parramatta is one step closer to completion after a development application was lodged this week.

The development application was lodged for the Five Parramatta Square project, which is being hailed as the City of Parramatta’s new civic, cultural and community building.

The proposed multipurpose building is the final addition to the new Parramatta Square precinct and will be designated for community use.

An information service on the ground floor will provide residents with access to information about Council’s services and products, as well as information about the building and the Parramatta Square precinct.

Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said it is also expected to include a public library and a cafe as well as places for people to meet, work, play and study.

“I’m delighted to see Council’s long-term vision for one of Australia’s largest urban regeneration projects progressing and I look forward to watching Five Parramatta Square go from concept to reality,” Lord Mayor Wilson said.

Five Parramatta Square has been designed by a consortium of French firm Manuelle Gautrand Archi-

tecture and Australian firms DesignInc and Lacoste and Stevenson following an international design competition.

“Five Parramatta Square will be a contemporary piece of innovative sustainable architecture, featuring an open, flexible layout and tessellated façade,” the Lord Mayor said.

“This new civic building will be the beating heart of Parramatta a unique space where the community can work, study and relax.

“The striking design and incredible functionality of Five Parramatta Square will undoubtedly create an iconic presence within the City.

“The City of Parramatta Council is leading the way by delivering a first-class sustainable building that will be a true asset to the community well into the future.”

Lord Mayor Wilson reassured heritage preservation supporters that this new building will not look out of place in the historic city centre.

“This integration has been carefully considered by the architects to ensure it celebrates and maintains Parramatta’s rich culture and unique heritage,” he said.

“The City’s historic Town Hall building will be seamlessly integrated into, and accessible from, Five Parramatta Square.”

Targeting a five-Star Green Star Design rating, Five Parramatta Square has been designed with sustainability in mind.

Other green features include high thermal performance, energy-generating solar panels as well as water harvesting and re-use systems.

LED lighting, light projections and digital artworks will animate the building’s exterior with various effects and colour.

Parramatta Square is a three hectare mixed-use precinct in the centre of Parramatta CBD. Located next to Parramatta train station and a future light rail stop on Macquarie Street, the precinct includes 6,000sqm of public domain that will serve as an important place to meet, trade, shop, dine, learn and connect.

The City of Parramatta Council anticipates that Five Parramatta Square will open in April 2022, to coincide with the completion of the remaining Parramatta Square precinct.

Parramatta appoints new CEO

BRETT NEWMAN was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer for the City of Parramatta on Monday.

Mr Newman was the CEO at Property NSW and has been involved in Parramatta’s successful Parramatta Square revitalisation project, the Powerhouse Museum and the North Parramatta Urban Renewal Project.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson welcomed Mr Newman’s appointment.

“I am pleased to welcome Mr Newman to Council and I look forward to working with him and continuing to deliver first-class services and projects for the community,” Cr Wilson said.

“With an extensive work history in both public and private

Parramatta’s new CEO Brett Newman sectors, and substantial experience as a CEO, I am confident

that he is well equipped to take the reins.”

Mr Newman starts work next month and said he was honoured to take on the role and serve the Parramatta.

“I am thrilled to be offered this incredible opportunity with the City of Parramatta, particularly during this exciting time of transformation and growth,” he said.

“In my role at Council, I will ensure that Parramatta not only continues to be a wonderful place to live, work and visit, but that it continues to meet the needs and expectations of the community.”

Ryde Rugby Thunder roars in 2019

RYDE Thunder Rugby Club have enjoyed a bumper season at Ryde International Arena in 2019 with seven teams lining up in Grand Final Qualifying fixtures this weekend.

PETER Chatfield overcame extremely windy conditions recently to win the Ryde X Phoenix Mens Bowling Club Minor Singles Championship title for 2019. He turned in a masterful performance to defeat Eddie Coleman 31-12 in the final.

The Thunder have gone from strength to strength with stand out performances throughout the divisions in the Sydney Junior Rugby Union competition - reaching the semi finals in every age group.

Ryde finished Minor Premiers in the Under 11s, Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 14s age categories while the Under 15s and 17/ Opens teams qualified for their respective semi finals to make it one of the club’s best seasons on record.

With five matches at home last weekend it was a massive day of action with big crowds at the Arena to watch every Ryde team win and advance to this weekend’s Grand Finals.

Ryde U/10s defeated Dee Why Lions (17 -10); U/11s downed Wahroonga (34 -19); U/12s beat North Rocks (33-14); U/13s drerw 19-all with Lane Cove but advance on countback while the mighty U/14s hammered Petersham 43 -7.

The Thunder Under 15s bowed out in a semi final against Burraneer while the Ryde U/17s succumbed to the all conquering Newport side in their fin committee wal.

RYDE EASTWOOD have stamped themselves the team to beat for the 2019 NSWRL Sydney Shield premiership trophy.

The high flying Hawks tuned up for the upcoming finals series with a thumping 62-22 victory over Belrose Eagles last Sunday at T.G Millner Field.

In a dominant performance the Hawks ran amok to post eleven tries and chalk up a 13th win from 18 matches with talented utility back Josh Rizk bagging a personal tally of 26 points after nabbing two tries and booting nine goals.

The victory consolidates a top four spot for Ryde Eastwood (28 points) who are hot on the heels of leaders Cabramatta (32), second placed St Marys (29) and third placed East Campbelltown Eagles (28) on percentages.

There was no stopping the Hawks who outclassed their rivals with sheer power and skill – crossing for five tries in the opening 18 minutes to jump to an unassailable 28-0 lead.

Star fullback Angelo Panambalana led the way, proving a threat to the Eagles each time he ran the ball.

The Hawks skipper notched a hat-trick of tries and sparked the back division with his elusive running to cap an outstanding game.

Gun centre Reggie Alofipo and sharp winger Josh Rizk each collected try doubles as the Ryde Eastwood cubs blitzed their Manly-Warringah opponents.

Belrose utility Waren Butler and fullback Keia Maino crossed for the Eagles before the interval but it was the Hawks in total control with a handy 32-12 lead.

MEANWHILE Ryde Eastwood are gearing up for elimination finals in the NSWRL Combined Sydney U/18 Gold, U/20 Gold and Womens Eastern Conference Open competitions this weekend.

The Hawks’ U/20s preserved their undefeated status after a 3228 golden point victory over Hills District Bulls in a minor semi final at T.G Millner Field.

They now face Asquith Magpies in a preliminary final this Sunday at Storey Park at 1pm.

An early Sam Kharwin try gave the Hawks first blood before the Bulls piled on three tries to lead 16-4.

The Ryde Eastwood cubs hit back with tries by powerful prop Ben Fisiilose - the best player on ground - and centre Kane Watling then came out roaring after the break with three unanswered tries by second rower Fonua Matangi, half back Tallis Smith and hooker Blake Layton to skip to a handy 28-16 lead.

Smart half Hayden Essery - backing up from the U/18 Div 1 semi final - potted two conversions but the Bulls refused to budge and crossed twice in the final nine minutes to level the scores 28-all by fulltime.

The Hawks muscled up in defence and sealed victory with a determined try by prop Fisiilose in golden point.

Fisiilose was ably supported by the strong running Matangi and winger Sione Folau.

Emerging paddlers Sharnae and Alana primed for international success

TWO athletic 16-year-olds who usually paddle on the Lane Cove River with the Marist Dragons are set to represent Australia this week in the IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships to be held in Pattaya-Rayong, Thailand.

Outstanding paddlers Sharnae Thiele of Ryde and Alana Doornbos of East Ryde (pictured) will line up for the Australian Auroras against the world’s best from August 20 to 25.

Over five days of competition, Sharnae and Alana - two of the finest prospects to emerge from the Marist Dragons - are in top shape and ready to compete in the Under-18s 200m, 500m, 1km and 2km women’s and mixed races.

It’s a long way from their usual training ground.

Marist Dragons is a community club that paddles out from Woolwich. It has a long tradition of contributing paddlers to the Auroras, Australia’s national team.

This is not the first time Sharnae and Alana, both students at Marist Sisters College Woolwich, have been on the world stage.

They were in the Auroras’ Under-18s team at the last world championships in France in 2017.

Both girls first picked up a dragon-boat paddle in Year 7, little imagining that about a year later they would be selected for a national team.

on,” says Sharnae.

As for Alana: “I started dragon boating because my sister’s friend did it.

She’d been to the world championships and said it was so much fun, so I thought I’d give it a go. I wasn’t that great to start with, but the coach said I could work on it and get better.”

What’s it like, lining up at the start of a race at a world championship?_ “It’s really scary,” says Sharnae. “Then you blank out because of all the adrenaline.”

She learnt a lot: “I am definitely a better paddler now than I was two years ago.”

Last October the girls applied again for the Auroras. Since January, when they found out they’d made the team, Alana and Sharnae have balanced school commitments with Auroras paddling sessions three or four days a week at Pyrmont, as well as mandatory daily fitness training.

In between, they have continued to paddle out with Marist Dragons.

So what are their chances in Thailand?

They expect an especially strong competition because these world championships are in Asia, dragon-boat heartland.

The Chinese paddlers are formidable, but “all the Asian teams are strong”, Alana says: “The Canadians are good too.”

But she rates the Auroras’ chances: “We’ve been training really well.”

Sharnae says: “Hopefully we’ll get gold for something.”

Dragon boating embraces people of all ages and levels of fitness, but the Auroras’ strength, co-ordination, and flexibility are amazing.

The 20 paddlers in each boat bend and flex like licorice sticks, armpits to the gunwales as they commence each stroke, then springing upright as they push the water back. All in perfect time.

The overall standard is not quite that high at Marist Dragons, where paddlers range in age from their teens to their sixties.

Many older paddlers go for fun, fitness, friendship and the occasional regatta. There’s a place in the boat for everyone.

“We’re a very close and fun little community,” Alana says.

At every level, dragon boating brings people together. “The atmosphere is great and when you off the water everyone is really proud of each other,” Sharnae says.
