Ryde-Hunters Hill Mikaela Patterson has been named Sydney Womens Hockey League Player of the Year and awarded the Loretta Dorman Medal.

Mikaela is the TWT Club 6 Ryde Sports Foundation 2018-2019 Sports Star of the Year Grand Finalist and an Australian Hockeyroos representative player.

She skippered Ryde-Hunters Hill Panthers Hockey Club to the Sydney Womens Hockey League Metro First Grade Premiership scoring the first goal and defeating Sydney University 3-1 and will celebrate this Saturday at the Club’s Gala Presentation Night at Canada Bay Club. SEE MORE PAGE 27.

Life membership for bowls stalwart Jean

GLADESVILLE Womens Bowling Club stalwart Jean Jones has been bestowed with life membership.

Widely respected Jean (pictured) has given yeoman service to the Ladies club, serving on almost every committee position including terms as President,Vice President, Secretary and as a coach at both club and national level over many years.

She has also represented the club at District and National events and throughout her long illustrious bowling career has racked up many Club and District championship titles.

Jean also served on the Board of Directors at Gladesville Bowling & Sports Club for a decade. To mark the occasion the Women’s Club held a lavish morning tea and luncheon in Jean’s honour which was also attended by her grandchildren.

LEGENDARY barber Joe Cascio and wife Lucia (pictured) celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary this Friday.

The couple were married in St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Marrickville on September 27, 1969 and settled in Gladesville where they have lived for the past five decades. Joe - of Joe’s Continental Barber fame - has been cutting and styling hair since the age of 11 and has proved a popular figure at Midway for 49 years. Lucia is also known for her 43 years of outstanding voluntary work with the Italo Australian Seniors Association and as president of the Trinacria Association. Joe and Lucia have two sons Dominic and Nino and a daughter Carmelina and also enjoy spending time with their three grandchildren Christopher, 18; Peppe, 10 and four year old Ben.

Letters to the Editor Hospital patients behaviour talks

A worthwhile initiative

Dear Sir, The Ryde community was invited to a meeting at North Ryde’s St John Anglican Church to discuss and find solutions to their concerns re patients from Macquarie Psychiatric Hospital who frequent Cox’s Road shopping area each day.

Dear Sir, I write in support of Judy Nicholas’ solution to the concerns of the community regarding inappropriate behaviour of some of the patients from Macquarie Hospital at the Cox’s Road shopping centre.

I congratulate Ryde Council and the church for offering several occasions including this opportunity for locals to express their concerns.

A number of patients’ behaviours have been observed to be not only challenging but sometimes offensive, so this meeting was valuable for residents to discuss ways of managing their own feelings and together come up with solutions.

As a mother and carer of a mentally disordered daughter who was once a patient in Macquarie Hospital I felt very close to this subject.

I would like to see government funding made available for rehabilitated ex-patients like my daughter to work as peer workers and accompany these in-patients from their units within the hospital to Cox’s Road shops and show them the correct way to become integrated with the community in an acceptable manner, just like they had to re-learn how to do.

As well as inspiring these in-patients, their own self esteem would rise as through their example they could encourage the community members to practise acceptance, tolerance and gratitude that they themselves have not been condemned to be admitted to such a facility which carries so much stigma..

It would seem that the provision of funding for rehabilitated ex patients to accompany in-patients from their homes to the shops would not only support those in-patients in understanding and accepting the necessity for appropriate behaviour, but also provide ex patients with a boost to their self esteem, as well as showing the general public that it is possible to learn to integrate into the community when the need for appropriate behaviours are explained and modelled by those who “have been there and done that”.

I wish Ms Nicholas every success in her advocacy for this worthwhile initiative.

Migrants contribute to quality of life Dear Sir, I was appalled on reading a letter printed in the September 18 edition of TWT, ‘Immigration is a Common Concern.’

The writer provided a gross exaggeration of the problems caused by some people who have come to our country in the hope of finding a better life.

He has failed to acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have settled in this land of opportunity and not only made better lives for themselves and their families but have contributed to the quality of life so many of us are fortunate to enjoy.

Has he any idea that this country was built on immigration and not all ‘white’ English speaking immigrants were models of good citizenship?

Let us acknowledge

our Convict History and all those who have generously contributed to the struggle and achievements that put our nation on its feet.

Many of their descendants fought and died for this nation.

Let us commend and congratulate the thousands of hard working immigrants who have worked in humble occupations as well as those who have achieved academically through sheer hard work and the desire to contribute to this country which gave them hope.

May those who travel abroad be envoys of our country and recognise that who we are and the quality of life we enjoy has been strongly influenced by immigration.

Finally a Library in Hunters Hill IT WAS great to see Hunters Hill Council finally resolve to establish a library in Hunters Hill.

Hunters Hill is the only metro council that doesn’t have a library in its borders, so this is long overdue.

Currently, Hunters Hill is part of a shared library services agreement with Ryde City Council.

As part of this agreement, Ryde’s libraries are considered our ‘home’ libraries.

And because we have a home library, we have reciprocal rights at every other library in NSW. The reciprocal rights mean we can borrow books from Lane Cove, even though we don’t pay Lane Cove Council for the privilege. * * * HUNTERS HILL Council is preparing to move our home library to Lane Cove, until it can establish its own service.

The new agreement with Lane Cove will save Hunters Hill hundreds of thousands of dollars every year and will provide some great services in the centre of Hunters Hill.

The icons were painted by local artist Michael Galovic whose works aim to take viewers into a spiritual dimension infused with the light of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith.

All Saints Anglican Church Reverend Michael Armstrong reflected on this spiritual realm.

“One of the most amazing images from the tragic fire at Notre

Dame was the gleaming reflection of light from of a brass cross in the centre of charcoaled and ash covered ruins,” he said.

“It reminded me of an experience as a child of walking into an Orthodox Church where the light of a few candles reflected around the room as it bounced off the beautiful icons scattered around the walls.

“For me, for whom this was foreign, I was immediately captured.

“The Priest who was present took some time to explain to me that the icons told the story of God in pictures.

“For me, it felt like a real moment of light in the dark, a sign of hope when at that moment in my life things felt a bit hopeless.”

“For me personally I find his art and icons deeply inspiring, and certainly a religious experience, bringing hope.

“In times that can often feel quite dark they illuminate for me that we are not alone, nor isolated, but are part of a great story, God’s story.

“I know that while I view them with a religious eye, that others who don’t share my faith tell me that these works move them also

A new library agreement is something that I have been campaigning for, ever since I was elected to serve on Hunters Hill Council. Last year the independent councillors unanimously rejected my plan to explore new partnership options, but they are now on board, and thankfully, since residents will enjoy better access to library services as well as better management of their rates.

Details are yet to be finalised, but the path forward is clear. We are getting a better outcome for the community, for significantly less cost.

Initiatives like this one are a win for everyone, and I look forward to helping steer this vision to fruition.

“Despite all this, two couples came from Canberra, one lady from Braidwood, all requiring four hours drive each way!

“Another couple came from Picton, a great effort as well.

“So, my absolute gratitude for this more than humbling attendance to those who braved the elements.

“My only hope is that they found what they came for in my display.

‘My gratitude naturally, goes to those who acquired my works this time as acquisitions are not only helpful but also demonstrative of the recognition of one’s labour of love.”

Jim Sanderson new Hunters Hill Deputy Mayor Councillor Jim Sanderson was elected Deputy Mayor of Hunters Hill on Monday night. He defeated Clr Elizabeth Krassoi (Ind) by four votes to three after Liberal Clr Zac Miles withdrew his nomination to vote for him.

Councillor Sanderson will now serve as Deputy Mayor until the upcoming local government elections in September next year. He

takes over as Deputy Mayor from Clr Ben Collins who served a oneyear term.

Mayor Mark Bennett thanked Clr Collins for his support and welcomed his new deputy. “Jim has a legal background as well as an engineering background and I am confident he will continue to make a significant contribution to Hunters Hill.

Members endorse Tigers merger

The latest piece of a complex rescue deal to preserve the Balmain heart beat of Wests Tigers is now in place after members of Balmain and Western Suburbs Leagues Clubs ratified their merger at separate general meetings last week.

But the merger to keep the Tigers alive means the Tigers are left with only a 10 per cent stake in the Wests Tigers NRL joint venture and the Tigers licensed premises under the control of the Magpies’ Ashfield operation.

A sombre gathering at Balmain Town Hall on Wednesday night saw, Balmain members vote 90-5 to endorse the amalgamations and Magpies members did the same the following at Ashfield, with only one of 220 members dissenting.

The merger deal also had to meet regulatory requirements under the Registered Clubs Regulation 2015 including a formal expressions of interest process and an opportunity for members to consider the Memorandum of Un-

derstanding (MOU) finalised in August.

The MOU will see Balmain hand over its successful Flemington Markets club to Wests, which in turn has committed to funding the Tigers’ annual junior league costs of $350,000 for the next five years.

Wests will also pick up Balmain’s debt of $3.2 million to the NRL, due next year.

The members’ votes approving the merger Members of both clubs also approved an application to the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority for transfer of Balmain’s licences to Wests, which requires the regulator’s approval.

Simple measure eases Eastwood congestion A simple change to on-street parking at a well-known bottlekneck in Eastwood, endorsed by Ryde Council, will improve traffic flow, says Councillor Dr Peter Kim. Two on-street car parking spaces in front of the White Lady Funerals in East Parade has caused delays of up to 30 minutes for commuters trying to get from the eastern side of Rowe street into Rutledge street.

Council passed Clr Dr Kim’s motion in April for a traffic report on the bottleneck.

The community was consulted over removal of the parking spaces, with 62 submissions in support and two against.

At the council meeting on the 24th September, it was resolved that the timed No Parking to be removed and replaced with No Stopping zone.

“A simple measure has significantly improved traffic congestion,” Clr Dr Kim said.

Councillor Bob Dwyer was elected new Lord Mayor of Parramatta at Monday night’s Council meeting in the Cloister Function Rooms of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Councillor Michelle Garrard was re-elected Deputy Lord Mayor.

Clr Dwyer, a representative of the North Rocks Ward, has served a total of eleven years as a Parramatta Councillor.

He was first elected in 1995, serving four years, and elected again in 2012 before being re-elected in 2016. Clr Dwyer was elected Deputy Lord Mayor in 1999, but this is his first time in the role of Lord Mayor.

Both Liberal’s Clr Dwyer and Clr Garrard, of the Our Local Community Party, will remain in the roles for the next 12 months until the Local Government elections in September next year.

Only two councillors were nominated for Lord Mayor with Clr Dwyer winning the contest by eight votes to six over Labor’s Pierre Esber and one councillor (Lorraine Wearne) abstaining.

“I am honoured to have been elected Lord Mayor and would like to thank my colleagues for placing their confidence in me to fulfil this position,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

“As an elected representative of the people of Parramatta, I look forward to working hard to deliver the services and infrastructure the City needs to support its residents, now and into the future.

“With massive growth and development under way in Parramatta, we as Councillors have an enormous responsibility to ensure these changes are in the best interests of the community, while helping cement Parramatta as Sydney’s Central City.

CITY of Parramatta seeking Epping resident feedback on local transport

The City of Parramatta has invited Eppiing residents to have a say on local transport

The Council survey team in partnership with NSW Health has posted a brief online survey to hear local views and has offered incentives for residents who complete the survey.

“You can enter the draw to win one of eight $50 reward cards, either Opal, IGA, Woolworths or Coles if you take part,” the survey team said.

“City of Parramatta Council is looking to better understand transport in your local area.

“Council would like to know how you move in your daily life and to inform future work, we have partnered with NSW Health to create a short 10-minute survey to learn how people who live in Epping currently travel around their neighbourhood.

To have your say, you need to be a resident in the specified area and be over the age of 18.

“We will be doing another study in 12 months to see if your travel activities have changed.”

The survey can be completed in English, Korean and Simplified Chinese and will be open until midnight Monday 30 September. It can be found at www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au

Changing population Epping and Carlingford are currently undergoing rapid change, with a large number of new residents moving in, the survey team said.

“This is changing how people move in the area and Council would like to better understand the needs of residents.

“Council is partnering with NSW Health as people’s daily movement and travel habits can influence their feelings of health and wellbeing.

“This area has been chosen because it is currently serviced by heavy rail that will shortly be converted to Light Rail, has a Metrobus service, significant State Roads and will have selected

A PIECE of art that depicts the environmental damage to the Menindee Lakes has taken out the major award at the City of Ryde’s Sustainable Waste to Art Prize (SWAP).

Ms Derkenne’s work was made from industrial waste collected from the ground in the Menindee Lakes in western NSW and depicts how human intervention has impacted on the lakes. “‘Menindee Ghost Ship’ not only reminds us of how we have destroyed an entire river system, but the fact that this sculpture is made from metal rubbish strewn everywhere along the banks of the Darling River also reminds us that the destruction is wilful and ongoing,” Ms Derkenne said.

The Functional award - for the design object judged to have best used reclaimed material to form a functional piece – was taken out by Julie Scully and her repurposed mannequin entitled ‘Burlesque’.

Exhibition at Meadowbank’s See Street Gallery, which will run until Thursday October 3. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday between 11am and 4pm with free entry for all members of the public.

Those who attend this year’s exhibition can vote for their favourite work in the exhibit with the work receiving the most votes to be awarded the People’s Choice Award at the conclusion of the exhibition.

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale, encouraged everyone to visit the SWAP exhibition and see the amazing artworks on display.

NORTHERN DISTRICT BUSINESS AWARDS The Eye - a Window to the Brain RETINAL (eye) imaging, a NASA-inspired technology, may detect dementia decades before its onset.

KaRa Institute of Neurological Diseases (KaRa MINDS) is home to one of the prototype hyperspectral retinal cameras.

Joan was one of the first people to volunteer for an eye scan at KaRa MINDS, enabling our researchers to compare what they saw in her eyes with what they saw in her brain.

Joan didn’t have Alzheimer’s disease.

In fact she didn’t have any type of dementia but she wanted to contribute to research.

“This is exciting research. I love to keep busy, so why not volunteer? It might help others,” she said.

Researchers have linked the build up of amyloid beta protein (plaques) and tau protein (tangles) in the brain to the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Amyloid protein in the brain can be measured using specialised PET scans.

However, for many reasons - such as limited access, high-cost, and a medically invasive procedure for patients - PET brain scans are not feasible for assessing the health of the

population.

However, imagine the benefits if an accessible, low-cost, non-invasive test to detect beta-amyloid in the eye, even before damaging levels build up in the brain could be shown.

Dr Tejal Shah leads this innovative research at KaRa MINDS, along with Prof Ralph Martins.

“I hope in the future, eye imaging becomes one of the diagnostic tools available to screen the general public, and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease,” says Dr Shah.

“Since beta-amyloid can accumulate up to 20 years before the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms, there is a window of opportunity to prevent dementia progressing.”

Various lifestyle approaches have been shown to slow or reverse the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Potentially, if people recognise their risk early, they may be able to avoid dementia.

The earlier a person knows about their health problem, the greater likelihood they can change their future.

Dementia is one of the most feared conditions, even more than cancer, and ignoring the signs and symptoms only further increases the risks.

KaRa MINDS, in collaboration with Macquarie University, is using the retinal camera to replicate earlier published research, in order to demonstrate the value of this diagnostic approach.

Currently eye imaging is being undertaken on volunteers involved in other related clinical trials, so the results can be compared with other established gold standard measures.

Keen local gardeners are most disillusioned

SITTING under the umbrellas, reading the paper and enjoying a coffee in North Epping is so much more pleasant - thanks to a couple of elderly volunteers.

Kevin were encouraged by the favourable comments to continue watering and weeding and added Grevillias, Lavendar bushes, and a few more Pansies - the garden was becoming a real show piece.

Then disaster struck - someone was pinching plants!

June and Kevin became disillusioned, so a sign was organised pointing out the gar-

den was being planted and cared for by elderly volunteers.

So far the ‘plant pincher’ hasn’t returned and would be very brave to do so.

They may find it’s not just June and Kevin chasing after them, but all the regularswho have come to enjoy the colourful display and visiting birds, as they meet up with friends over coffee under the umbrellas.

Aggressive protests forcing Ryde heritage meetings to be postponed

CITY of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale has expressed concern about “aggressive protests” that this week forced a heritage review meeting schedule to be postponed.

The postponement is due to staff concerns about occupational health and safety in response to the protests across Ryde last week, prompting fears that staffers who attend community based consultations may be subject to credible threats of intimidation.

Staff are expected to meet this week to consider safety options which may include hiring security guards and hosting small precinct meetings.

The meetings are to seek resident feedback on council support for heritage listing historic homes and while a significant per cent of the City of Ryde community support heritage protection there are residents who want to demolish and redevelop their homes and are passionately

opposed to any outside state and local government controls on the property they own.

Mayor Laxale (ALP) said much of the aggression is being directed at him.

“There are people aggressively putting out lies that their homes will loose value because of me, personally” he said.

“At the last consultation there were even protestors holding placards with accusations against me.

“These allegations do not take into account that these consultation sessions were voted for by all twelve councillors at a recent council meeting.”

He said he is also aware of “lies and rumours” that he is trying to run from the protesters.

“I did not make the call to cancel the

upcoming sessions although I informed people on my facebook page that these forthcoming information sessions have been cancelled.

“I have also been accused of hiring a security guard to attend a community session but I did not ask for one and it was not my decision.

“But whether you agree or disagree (about heritage reforms) our staff need to work in a safe workplace and I respect their concerns.”

The Mayor stressed that the aim of the consultation sessions is to ensure that everyone has a right to have a say.

“Are we going to ignore the greater good of the community ?”

“I am not expecting

unanimity from the community and I want to see everyone’s views heard and everyone respected.”

He said heritage protection would only impact on one per cent of homes in the City of Ryde.

Many residents in favour of heritage protection live in streets where there are predominantly heritage homes and they argue that knocking down and redeveloping homes in their street decrease the property values along the street.

Liberal Clr Trenton Brown argues that heritage protection retains the charm and character of historic areas for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

State Opposition seeks a ban on developers, real estate agents

THE STATE Opposition has moved to ban property developers from serving as government ministers and real estate agents from serving as local councillors.

NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay said Labor supports a proposed new law to outlaw property developers from surving as cabinet ministers following what she said was the gross failure by Premier Gladys Berejiklian to manage the conflict of interest posed by Drummoyne MP John Sidoti’s property empire.

Ms McKay said Labor’s measures include amendments to the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act, which governs the Ministerial Code of Conduct, to strengthen integrity in public office.

Ms McKay also supports a $100 cap on cash donations to politicians.

“I will do whatever it takes to restore the public’s trust in politicians and if that means banning property developers from sitting around the cabinet table then so be it,” she said.

“You can be a Minister or a property developer but you can’t be both.”

The Opposition Leader also linked the Premier to the Sidoti Affair and said she failed to act.

“The Premier has been very vocal on cleaning up public life but to date she has

The Code does not specifically ban a minister from being a property developer, which the Electoral Funding Act 2018 defines as someone who carries on a business mainly concerned with the residential or commercial development of land, with the ultimate purpose of the sale or lease of the land for profit.

“The Member for Drummoyne, Mr Sidoti, falls squarely into that category,” she alleged.

“The proximity of multi-million dollar property interests close to metro stations at Tallawong in Rouse Hill and Five Dock is now the subject of an ICAC investigation.”

Labor is also opposed to real estate agents serving on local councils.

“Since 2015 Labor has been pushing for real estate agents to be banned from sitting on councils but has been blocked at every turn by the Liberals.”

The issue recently came to light in Hunters Hill when a real estate agency staffer unsuccessfully stood for election as a councillor.

ERNA Hawks primed for State Premier Netball title

RYDE EASTWOOD Hawks and Central Coast Heart are gearing up for another Netball NSW Premier League Opens Grand Final thriller tonight (Wednesday) at Homebush.

The proud clubs will lock horns for bragging rights in a replay of the 2018 Grand Final decider at 7.30pm and the scene is set for another gripping finish to an arduous campaign.

Minor premiers Central Coast and the Hawks recorded a win each against each other during the regular season with the Heart narrowly defeating Ryde Eastwood in a major semi final. The Hawks advanced to the Grand Final after a crushing 77-42 victory over GWS Fury last Wednesday night - a dominant performance that showed their champion qualities.

Ryde Eastwood fielded a star studded opening line up - boasting five current State play-

ers including dual representative and current Giants AFLW member Taylah Davies plus Australian Diamonds squad member Kiera Austin from the GIANTS Netball team and Sophie Halpin, straight from the NSW Swifts’ Super Netball championship trumph.

The Hawks came out firing taking control from the first centre pass.

Following an injury, Taylah Davies had to be helped from the court after just five minutes and was replaced by Georgia Marshall who took over the centre position.

The Hawks didn’t miss a beat leading 22-9 at quarter time with Georgia working effortlessly with Claire O’Brien to feed the ball into the shooters.

Ryde Eastwood were

dynamic in attack, moving the ball easily down the court after a intercept from their strong defence end led by captain Jessica Grant and ably assisted by Nicole Styles and Sophie Halpin - leaving it to their shooters Alison Miller and Kiera Austin to move the scoreboard along.

Sophie Dwyer was brought on during the third quarter and her shooting was faultless.

The Hawks went from strength to strength and extended their lead at each break to overwhelm the Fury.

ERNA Hawks Head Coach Jen Wright and assistant coach Sandy Attard were thrilled with the team’s performance and have pulled out all stops at training to reverse last year’s Grand Final epic.

A tireless back row forward, Justin was a promising Balmain junior representative cub before linking with Cabramatta and has proved a mainstay in the club’s quest for premiership honours.

When he’s not gaining metres with bustling runs or foiling attacks with punishing tackles, Justin works alongside his dad Michael at Frain Electrical.

“I’ll be giving him plenty of overtime this week - maybe this Saturday morning before the big game,” joked Michael.

RYDE EASTWOOD are chasing championship glory after trouncing St Marys 44-24 in last Sunday’s preliminary final at Kogarah Jubilee Oval.

They’ll now square off with rivals and minor premiers Cabramatta in this Saturday’s trophy decider at Leichhardt Oval at 12.30pm after the Two Blues thumped East Campbelltown Eagles 42-16 in the first preliminary final.

Having won their

past two clashes against Cabramatta this campaign, the Ryde Eastwood cubs have firmed as title favourites under the astute coaching of Walt Wilson.

The high flying Hawks have strung together ten consecutive victories with their power, pace and skill and are brimming with confidence as they zoom in on a maiden Sydney Shield premiership.

Ryde Eastwood jumped to a 10-0 lead after 13 minutes following an early penalty goal by utility ace Josh Rizk and two neat tries by clever half back Mitchell Gray.

The Saints hit back with a converted try to back rower Tom Romer after 24 minutes before the Hawks gained the upper hand with three quick tries by dynamo hooker Tristan Tsoi-Evans (2) and centre Bradley Cincotta to lead 24-6 at the interval.

Josh Rizk posted the Hawks’ sixth try and added the extras shortly after the break to give his side a commanding lead before the Saints staged a mini revival.

Honours for paddler Sharnae and top mountain biker Josh

AUSTRALIAN paddler Sharnae Thiele and national mountain biking whiz Josh Arcus are the fourth and fifth monthly winners in the 2019-20 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award.

Outstanding prospect Sharnae of Ryde collected six medals at the recent IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Thailand while boom 16 year old Josh donned the green and gold at this year’s World Championships of Downhill Mountain Biking in Canada.

Both will be recognised at a presentation this Friday night at North Ryde RSL Community Club at 6pm.

SHARNAE THIELE, a product of the Marist Dragons Club based at Woolwich, represented the Australian Auroras with distinction at the 2019 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Thailand’s Pattaya-Rayong region last month.

Over the five days of competition, the 16 year old dynamo clinched three silver medals for the 2km Under 16s Womens Small Boat; 1km Under 18s Womens Standard Boat and 200m Under 18s Womens Standard

She also bagged three bronze medals for 2km Under 18 Mixed Small Boat; 500m Under 18 Mixed Standard Boat and 200m Under 18 Mixed Small Boat - an incredible feat by the Marist Sisters Woolwich student.

The Australian team finished fourth in the medal tally and were up against powerful rivals such as Thailand whose entire squad trained full time for a year.

To achieve medals against this type of competition was meritorious indeed and a special moment for the promising young paddler.

It was a long way from her usual training ground on the Lane Cove River with the Marist Dragons community club that paddles out from the boatshed at Marist Sisters Woolwich, where Sharnae is in Year 11.

appearing on the world stage in 2017.

She was a member of the Under 18 Australian Auroras at the previous world championships in the French town of Aix-les-Bains where she brought home two gold medals and a silver medal.

At this year’s Australian titles in April, Sharnae claimed gold in the Under 18 200m; silver in the U/18 Mixed 200m and bronze in the U/18 Mixed 500m.

The gifted schoolgirl first picked up a dragon-boat paddle in Year 7, little imagining that within twelve months she would be selected for a national team._ “I’d never heard of dragon boating, so I thought I’d give it a go,” says Sharnae.

“I found it hard to keep up with everyone, but I just carried on.”

What’s it like, lining up at the start of a race in world championship?

“It’s really scary,” says Sharnae.

“Then you blank out because of all the adrenaline.”

But the experience paid off. “I am definitely a better paddler now than I was two years ago,” Sharnae says.

Sharnae has had to balance school commitments with Auroras paddling sessions three or four days a week at Pyrmont as well as mandatory daily fitness training.

She and the other elite paddlers love the Marist Dragons camaraderie.

“The atmosphere is great and when you are off the water everyone is really proud of each other,” says Sharnae.

Marist Dragons Club President Mark Benn said if you sat behind Sharnae and her junior compatriates in a Dragon Boat during a race you would be left reeling trying to keep up.

“Her strength, technique and discipline are of a standard that many of us can only dream about,” he revealed.

HAVE bike will travel - that is the motto of Ryde teenager Josh Arcus who has stamped his mark on the international Mountain Biking circuit.

Classy Panthers bring home Sydney Womens Hockey League premiership

RYDE Hunters Hill Hockey Club’s first grade womens team reign supreme after capturing the 2019 Sydney Womens Hockey Metro League championship.

The talented young Pantherettes produced a dominant performance to blitz minor premiers Sydney University 3-1 in the title decider at Homebush and chalk up a second Grand Final triumph in three seasons.

It was a superb team effort in hot conditions by Nikki Beaton’s well drilled Ryde outfit as they demonstrated sheer courage and skill to sink the highly rated Students.

The Panthers dominated from the outset and were never headed on the scoreboard.

After applying much pressure in theopening ten minutes and players missing several opportunities, Ryde skipper and Hockeyroos rep Mikaela Patterson took charge with an intercept and amazing solo run - fooling four players before thundering the ball past

The Riverview student forced his way onto the Australian team for the recent World Championships of Downhill Mountain Biking at Mont Sainte Ann in Quebec after superb performances at domestic level over the past two years.

Hampered by a back injury, Josh completed the 2.9km championship trek in a time of 4 minutes 34 sec to finish in 36th place - some 27 seconds behind the winner.

During his three week campaign, Josh competed at Whistler where

the hapless keeper’s outstretched left leg to open the scoring.

It was a critical first goal and set the tone for the rest of the match putting Sydney Uni on the back foot andthe Ryde girls on the ascendancy.

The Students equalised soon after before a second Ryde goal was scored by striker Emily Waddell with a great assist from Australian U/21 forward Abby Wilson.

Ryde made it 3-1 thanks to some smart individual play by club stalwart Kiona Nicholl after a pinpoint pass from former Dutch international Boudine van der Pols to Ellen Campey who threaded it through to Nicholl to score.

Despite dominating proceedings there were some close raids by Sydney Uni with keeper Zoe Newman making some great saves and her defensive unit of Jen-

nifer Manuel, Georgia Dwyer, Sarah WynnTaylor and Andrea Gillard up to the task.

A large Panthers contingent was on hand cheering the Ryde club to victory with former coaches Tim Collier, Gina Rees, John Cullen and Mick Gunner particular proud to witness first grade mentor Beaton and the team’s continuation of their legacy.

Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Club President Glen Castensen said the Panthers’ faithful were absolutely delighted for the girls, coach Nikki Beaton and support staff Larry McIntosh, Gina Rees, Celicia Blamey, Kirsty O’Sullivan and Mick Gunner.

“They all worked so hard for the entire season and were in top form leading into the finals,” reflected Castensen.

“Their dominant Grand Final victory

was well deserved and the cherry on top in what has been a wonderful 85th year celebration for the Club,” he said.

“They are a very young team and we can only imagine how much stronger they’ll be over the coming years - so watch this space.”

To cap off a memorable 2019 campaign, skipper Patterson received the Loretta Dorman Medal for the SWHL Player of the Year and Hockeyroos Development striker Abby Wilson nabbed 24 goals to finish the competition’s leading goal scorer for a third successive season.

Ryde-Hunters Hill Hockey Club underlined its rich depth of talent by clinching three Club Championships and three premierships in the senior grades as well as collecting six junior premierships last weekend.

he finished fourth in the Juniors Category of the Garbanzo Downhill - a 13 minute race averaging 40km/ph - as well as a fourth placing in the Dual Slalom and 8th in the Canadian Open.

While gearing up for the Air DHI, he came off his bike at speed and damaged his back which left him in doubt for the World titles.

Josh connected with the junior and senior members of the Australian team and spent the week gaining an understanding of what

it takes to become a professional.

He sat 35th after braving wet and windy qualification conditions and despite a solid performance in his final run he finished 36th.

Josh commenced his Mountain Biking journey as a 12 year old and despite being hospitalised twice riding his bike has carved out an impressive list of achievements that include winning State titles and Australian Schools Championships.

The young gun has earned the tag of

Australian MTB Interschools King of the Mountain these past two years and currently leads the NSW DH State series after finishing first overall in 2018.

Josh was runner up in last year’s Australian Open DH Cannonball MTB Festival and finished first in Downhill at the 2019 Australian MTB Interschools and first overall at the Australian National Downhill.

He also came fourth at this year’s Oceania Downhill Championships.

Tigers favourite son Benji Marshall has re-signed for another year to lead the Tigers to Grand Final Glory in 2020!

Tigers fans and supporters will be ecstatic to see Benji wear the black-n-gold for another year as he is playing some of his best footy ever in recent times.

This year he has proved he is as energetic and active as ever and his football skills have benefitted with age and experience to the best in the game.

Benji last played in a successful grand final performance as a youngster in 2005 when he was instrumental with his legendary flick pass in winning the NRL Premiership with the Tigers.

He is now looking to go out a winner in what will be his last year in first grade with the Tigers once more.

He is confident the Tigers can do it under super coach Michael “Madge” Maguire following great progress this year.

Meanwhile the Tigers are still favourites to win again this year when our Mexican cousins south of the border take out top honours in aerial ping pong.
