There’s even live music from a 20 piece orchestra and a special appearance from the “Legends” cast who return to the stage.

Film Night on Pilliga Forest

Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch invite you to a screening of a new film about the campaign to protect communities, water and the Pilliga forest from coal seam gas in NSW on Wednesaday June 26 in Lane Cove Library from 6.15pm to 8.30pm.

Drilling through groundwater sources in the Pilliga puts communities at risk of losing access to their only sources of water, groundwater that is especially necessary during times of drought.

Speakers include Naomi Hogan, co national director of Lock The Gate, and Anna Christie, a campaigner for the protection of the Leard and Pilliga forests.

This year’s Ryde Eisteddfod opens on Saturday July 13 with the vocal program in the North Ryde Community Centre with character song for 8-10 years at 9am.

Letters to the Editor Global Cooling or warming?

Dear Sir, Viv Forbes is a regular contributor to the letters page which isn’t that unusual expect when you note he lives in rural Queensland.

So why is Mr Forbes always writing to a tiny suburban weekly in north-west Sydney?

And why is Mr Forbes always trying to debunk that facts associated with global warming?

Well Mr Forbes is the executive director of The Saltbush Club, a rag tag group of current and past coal, mining and industry executives that are the “flat-earthers” of our time.

There are undoubtedly some emanate people among their membership however not one of them is a recognised, published and peer reviewed climate scientist.

They believe, in part, that the release of Co2 into our atmosphere is not a bad thing.

Mr Forbes latest letter suggests that we have more to fear from “lethal global cooling” than “life-sustaining global warming”.

I would suggest to Mr Forbes that by the time the next ice age comes along we will all be long gone.

The facts are undeniable, the planet is warming, the clear cause of that warming is the release of gasses into our atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels and methane from farm animals.

And with enormous amounts of land being cleared of forests the planets ability to absorb excess Co2 has become severely diminished.

Fortunately almost every single nation around the world understands what is going on with our climate and appreciates that we are already in trouble.

Right now governments are working to rectify the damage already caused and trying to halt increased global temperatures.

They understand, I just wonder why Mr Forbes doesn’t?

Development or stagnation

Dear Sir, Two photos of Mayor Jeremy Laxale in this week’s TWT are noteworthy.

In Ryde Council’s advertisement he’s grinning widely and looking excited about a development – his own Council’s new Civic Centre.

But on the adjacent page in front of another high rise – he’s all grim and miserable.

He’s adopted the classic “not in my backyard” pose – arms crossed, furrowed brow andangry fixedglare– the one seen so often in our local press.

The stance is such a cliche it even has its own website and Facebook page celebrating it – called “Angry people in local newspapers”. Google it, it’s hilarious…

The Labor mayor’s happy/ sad schizophrenia over development might be a puzzle, but then his Liberal opponent’s stance is even more perplexing.

Once upon a time all politicians had to promise they’d build new things, support new jobs and provide more rateable funds to pay for extra services.

But now that “development” is such a dirty word, they’re forced to do the exact reverse, and in effect – promote stagnation and declining services for everyone. Good luck with the results of that, Jeremy and Victor…

So no wonder the Mayor looks so unhappy in the second photo. When I saw it I felt like giving him a hug to cheer him up.

Either that or submit the photo to that website.

Firstly woolly rhinos and mammoths were part of the ice age fauna that lived on what has been termed the mammoth steep.

The rhinos were first on the scene arriving more than 50 million years ago with the mammoths turning up 17.5 million years ago.

This mammoth steep extended from Spain through to North Americaover the Bearing Straight which was dry land at the time.

They together with a whole ice age menagerie colonised this steep moving north when the ice retreated and south when it expanded.

Fossil evidence indicates that the woolly rhinos went extinct about 34,000 years ago shortly before the ice age maximum, 30,000 to 20,000 years ago, and the mammoths persisted till about 11,000 years ago well after the collapse of the large ice sheets in the north.

Hunters consisting of human/Neanderthal hybrids were well established in the mammoth steep 37,000 years ago and probably had a big hand in their demise.

Given the long time span over which these animals occupied this cold land and the vast numbers involved it is little wonder that we find their frozen remains from time to time.

But we have to remember that they actually thrived in the cold phases.

Viv is correct re the recent historical cold events however inaccurate re the effects of heat.

Heat waves and associated droughts are called the silent killers.

The heat waves preceding the Black Friday bush fires in January 2009 resulted in 374 excess deaths in Victoria that can be attributed to the heat alone forcing Melbourne city morgue to outsource cadavers to local hospitals and funeral homes.

The suicide rate among farmers in the millennium drought and the one that we

are currently experiencing has been huge and immensely tragic and is a direct result of climate change and increasing temperatures and I have not even begun to estimate the death toll among the livestock.

I know that your editor is a climate change denier and probably refers to folk like me as warmists.

Given the ever increasing body of evidence confirming anthropomorphic climate change I think that you and some of your readers should re-examine the evidence with an open mind.

I have carefully examined the sceptics evidence and found it lacking in basic science as per the extinction of the woolly rhino and mammoth.

Skate park noise complaint issue Dear Sir, I was quite disappointed at my name being posted in the article re the skate park (TWT June 19 2019) and to see what is a genuine issue of noise for residents turned into an article about out of control youths.

Ninety nine percent of people are well intented and oblivious to any harm they may be causing.

The issue is noise and if you are willing I would like the opportunity to send you a letter I will be addressing council with on Tuesday if they allow me to speak.

Little to mark thousands of years of occupation

DESPITE Australia’s indigenous community being the sole occupants of Hunters Hill peninsula for all but the past two centuries or so, there is little to show now for their presence over thousands of years.

This is an unfortunate situation which Hunters Hill Historical Society would like to remedy.

Some could argue it is too little, too late but the Historical Society maintains that it is worth making the effort to look at ways of recognising Aboriginal engagement.

While there is, of course, much written evidence chronicling our harbour suburb’s later European settlement, the details about indigenous activity is sketchy to say the least.

This is not surprising because of their tradition of passing down information from generation to generation orally rather than writing down their history. * * * IT IS generally accepted that the Aboriginal people who occupied the peninsula belonged to the Wallumedegal or Wallumattagal clan.

Their name was derived from either the word for snapper fish - wallumai - combined with matta, meaning a place of water or after the spiny rush plant which grows prolifically in the area.

These early inhabitants possibly referred to the area as Moco Boula, meaning two waters, specifically the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers which lie on either side of the peninsula.

The name was originally used by one of Hunters Hill’s early pioneers, Jules Joubert.

He claimed this was how local Aboriginal

people had referred to the area.

However he provided no source for his assertion.

As an aside, it is interesting to note that Joubert wanted to use the name of Moocooboola for the then newlyestablished Municipality.

His peers were not as supportive of the idea and preferred Hunters Hill. Moocooboola exists, though, in the name of the local community festival, among other things. * * * THERE ARE several dozen recorded archaeological sites spread around the Municipality.

Their exact whereabouts have been generally kept secret, which is partly a deliberate policy by the authorities to keep them safe and secure from overzealous enthusiasts and to deter vandalism.

As it is, their locations have become overgrown and mostly inaccessible and any evidence of Aboriginal occupation has diminished, not least because of natural erosion.

These sites indicate that indigenous people conducted a range of activities on the peninsula.

It is likely, though, that the length of each visit may have been only to eat a meal, from fish caught in the surrounding waters, or to stay just a few days.

As the majority of the sites are close to the shoreline, this leads to the conclusion that access to the peninsula was mostly by canoe.

There are stated to be three main areas showing signs of Aboriginal occupation near

Woolwich Dock, at Kelly’s Bush in Woolwich and in Boronia Park.

There are also a couple of sites within private properties. * * * THESE SITES have been recorded as being rock shelters, axegrinding grooves in the rocks, middens made up of discarded shells of mussels, oysters, cockles and whelks and even human burial grounds.

The subject of the pictures in the rock shelters are not readily identifiable, having faded because of weathering or by graffiti which has obscured them.

Human skeletal remains were discovered many years ago.

From one location, near Woolwich Dock, two skulls were recovered - one of a woman and the other of a juvenile. A skull was also found at a property nearby.

Two of these skulls are recorded as being in the possession of the Australian Museum.

Surely there is merit in promoting Hunters Hill’s Aboriginal heritage to form the basis of an interpretative explanation of indigenous involvement in the local area.

The Historical Society is considering the possibility of a culturallysensitive display within its Museum at the Town Hall.

Any more information or suggestions for inclusions, or even the donation of local artefacts, would be gratefully received..

THE HUNTERS Hill Le Vesinet Friendship Committee and Council are hosting a Welcome Reception for the visiting Le Vesinet exchange students from France on Monday July 1 in the Hunters Hill Council Chamber.

This year there are 17 students participating in the Program. The students spend six weeks in Australia staying with their host families, attending school; participating in excursions including visiting the Blue Mountains, whale watching, Sydney Opera House and the Botanical Gardens.

City of Ryde statement responds to TWT article about Lane Cove’s sharing offer to Hunters Hill THE CITY of Ryde has issued a statement in response to last week’s exclusive article in The Weekly Times about Lane Cove Council’s offer to share services with Hunters Hill Council.

The TWT article reports that Lane Cove has offered shared library services and depot services, which has infuriated Ryde because it has an existing shared library service agreement with Hunters Hill.

“It was revealed that Lane Cove Council and Hunter’s Hill Council were set to enter into a shared service arrangement,” the City of Ryde statement said.

“Under the arrangement, both councils would share key functions including library services, information technology, a works depot and senior staff.

“Despite a Joint Library Agreement being in place for more than 60 years, the City of Ryde had not been consulted about the details of the shared service arrangement between Hunter’s Hill Council and Lane Cove Council and has not yet been given an opportunity to negotiate a new agreement for library services.”

The statement warns that the City of Ryde will “consider options” in regard to Hunters Hill.

“While the City of Ryde is extremely disappointed about the lack of consul-

tation, Council will need to consider its options for the site if the Joint Library Agreement is terminated

by Hunter’s Hill Council..

“If the Agreement is terminated, the City of Ryde will need to consider the value of maintaining a service which is used by Hunters Hill residents particularly if their council was not contributing the operational costs.”

A subsequent article in The Northern District Times with alleged “inaccurate and misleading quotes” was noted in the City of Ryde statement.

“Speaking to the Northern District Times about the new shared service arrangement with Lane Cove Council, Hunter’s Hill Council Deputy Mayor Ben Collins said his council was overpaying by several-hundred thousand dollars due to the Joint Library Agreement.

“He added that Hunters Hill residents only use six per cent of the Gladesville library service.

“In the same article, Lane Cove Deputy Mayor Scott Bennison claimed the City of Ryde was gouging Hunters Hill.

“The quotes attributed to both councillors are

inaccurate and misleading.””

“The City of Ryde has refuted misleading claims that it is charging an unfair rate to provide library services to Hunters Hill residents.”

The City of Ryde statement stressed that Hunter’s Hill Council’s expenditure on library services is lower than what is being paid by the next door neighbours.

“Total expenditure for library services by Hunter’s Hill Council was $48.01 per capita.

“This is far lower than the expenditure for the City of Ryde at $56.83 and Lane Cove at $90.83.

“Not only does the City of Ryde have a higher per capita expenditure, it is arguably subsidising the cost of the library service it offers to Hunter’s Hill Council.

“In addition, the claim

“This is not a reasonable basis for calculating the Hunters Hill contribution as there is no correlation to the total cost of providing the service.

Deputy Mayor Collins told The Weekly Times that book loans accurately reflects the use of City of Ryde libraries

by Hunters Hill resides because book loans are the key function of a library.

“I welcome Lane Cove’s offer because we live in a free market society, which is something the City of Ryde does acknowledge,” he told The Weekly Times.

The City of Ryde statement nonetheless asks if Lane Cove really can offer a better deal.

“In the event that Gladesville Library ceases operation and the shared service arrangement between Hunters Hill and Lane Cove councils was formalised, Hunters Hill residents would be forced to utilise Lane Cove Library and could lose access to the City of Ryde’s extensive online library of eBooks, audiobooks and magazines.”

Hunters Hill welcomes Lane Cove’s shared services offer

LANE COVE Council’s proposed shared services agreement with Hunters Hill was endorsed in principle by Hunters Hill councillors on Monday night.

So far the agreement includes a shared works depot, library services and two shared employee position but does not incur new costs on either council or the loss of existing jobs.

It was unanimously passed by Lane Cove councillors last week but Hunters Hill councillors only endorsed it with a proviso that “substantial” future shared works come to a council meeting to be ratified by councillors.

The proviso reflects community concerns about Hunters Hill’s potential to lose control of local services, which emerged as a threat to the heritage municipality’s independence during the recent, failed forced merger bid.

“There is an understandable fear although clearly this is not a Clayton’s amalgamation,” Clr Jim Sanderson said.

“I have heard commu-

nity concern and if we are bringing matters back to council it gives us a chance to explain why we are doing things.”

It will be up to General Manager Lisa Miscamble to decide which matters are substantial and which are small scale or operational matters.

“There is a need for council to have a say because we are talking about an agreement, a substantive activity,” Clr Ross Williams said.

“But if there is little to be gained by sharing a service it is better for those things to be done in house.”

Councillor Justine McLaughlin also supports the concept of substantial cost sharing items being scrutinised by councillors.

“We are the public face of Hunters Hill and if we do not know anything about it we cannot represent the community,” she said.

“This provides assur-

ances to the community.”

***** RESIDENTS who live near St Joseph’s College and Villa Maria Catholic School will be consulted on proposed traffic changes.

The proposed changes include the location of a pedestrian crossing and parking spaces and may include bus access.

Hunters Hill councillors have studied traffic committee recommendations for the area and consultation has taken place with both schools.

Councillor Ross Williams on Monday night moved a successful motion to consult the residents.

“There has been consultation with the schools and not with the residents and the residents will hold us accountable,” he said.

“There are legitimate issues that need to be addressed.”

John Booth AM Mr ANTHONY ROBERTS (Lane Cove—Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections) (5 June 2019, 19:02:41): Friends in this House and people of New South Wales, it is my honour today to announce my nomination for the 2019 NSW Government Community Service Award. We are fortunate in Lane Cove to be rich beyond measure with men and women willing to donate their time and energies for a greater cause. Members of the local State Emergency Service and Landcare branches, Meals on Wheels, Happy Hens, students raising funds for worthwhile causes and parents educating our youth are but a few I can name. However, today I would like us to focus on one individual in particular.

Napoleon’s quip that “four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets” neatly condenses the effect John Booth and The Weekly Times have on our local representatives. As Booth’s humble masthead surges into its ninety-eighth year, it is worth pausing to reflect on the indelible impact John has had on our beautiful electorate. John and The Weekly Times have never shied from a fight, waging war to defend historical buildings, schools and parks, fighting amalgamations and giving a voice to the silent communities who live amongst us. Politicians or individuals who were getting too big for their boots were quickly cut to size. This did not endear John to some people. A couple of strong men made sure he knew of their displeasure. However, John outlasted them, attending the funerals of those old rivals to, in his words, “make sure they were in their coffins”. He began the Ombudsman campaign which has gone on to serve many thousands across New South Wales. From 1964 until its official inception as a government institution, John was synonymous with providing locals with an avenue of appeal, a fair go. In fact, an amendment in a bill to prevent other groups from calling themselves “the Ombudsman” was affectionately called the “Booth amendment”.

John’s achievements are not limited to his work with The Weekly Times. Born at home on Blaxland Road in 1932— the same year as that other magnificent monument of Sydney, the Harbour Bridge—Boothy, his twin brother and sister grew up in Ryde when it was farms and dirt roads. He attended Ryde Public School and then went on to Sydney Technical High School. He says his best memory of school was the day he left. As a young man he was a copyboy at The Daily Telegraph when it was headed by Sir Frank Packer and then he had a cadetship in the country papers. This career was cut short when John’s father sadly succumbed to old war wounds in 1952. He went back to his dad and mum’s cake shop and, as we all know, bought the business from his mum in 1957.

In 1959 John decided to take a step into politics, joining Ryde Council. Soon after he achieved the fabled position of the mayor of Ryde. As one of his first moves he upped the rates. It is safe to say that that decision was highly unpopular.

So unpopular were the rate increases the unions put a black ban on John and for some time he could not get a cold beer or his mail. However, this courageous political move gave the council the funds it needed to give Ryde the infrastructure it was crying out for. For the first time Ryde developed a town plan. Roads, sewers, drainage and a swimming centre quickly followed and large signs were erected around the suburb letting the community know the extra taxes were not going to waste. John bought land to be used as sports ovals and helped lay the groundwork for a green belt which now hosts Macquarie University. Interestingly, there was a campaign at the time opposed to the concept, as universities do not pay rates.

On behalf of a grateful community I thank you, John. Many hundreds of thousands of people across this State have benefited from your perseverance and vision. We are fortunate that you crossed our way. John’s bold vision is the type of vision that drives our State and demonstrates the success of the New South Wales Government, the union of a booming economy, strategic planning and a government determined to improve the lives of its citizens. On behalf of my community, to John Booth and his partner, Ulrike, who is currently in Austria, we give grateful thanks for your leadership, vision and dedication to our community, which you have made so much stronger.

Celebrating 40 years

Forty years of business, media and community achievements THE WEEKLY TIMES Managing Editor John F Booth AM this week celebrates 40 years at the helm of Australia’s most awarded Independent community newspaper.

The Weekly Times was founded in 1921 by Charles H Engisch in Gladesville and John Booth AM took over as managing editor in 1979.

A former Ryde alderman known as John ‘Action’ Booth he expanded TWT and it has flourished in a distribution area that stretches beyond the City of Ryde to the Lane Cove Municipality, the Hornsby Municipality, the Hunters Hill municipality and into the City of Canada Bay, the City of Parramatta and the Inner West.

More than 54,000 homes, clubs and businesses receive this newspaper every Wednesday, with a total readership of tens of thousands of locals.

Mr Booth has been presented with numerous awards by the Community Newspapers of Australia and was recently named as a Mate Of Bennelong

by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“He has also advised and challenged several prime ministers, premiers, government ministers, mayors, councillors and local politicians as well as being at the forefront of saving the Hunters Hill Municipality from past attempts to merge it into the City of Ryde,” local business leader and political observer David Hayman said.

The Ryde Civic Centre owes its existence to Alderman John ‘Action” Booth.

“It was his idea to build the Ryde Civic Centre and also the Top Ryde Shopping Centre, which is now known as Top Ryde City Shopping Centre,” Mr Hayman said.

“John Booth’s father, Arthur F Booth was an alderman on the Ryde Municipal Council and John followed his father’s footsteps and served two continuous terms as an alderman from 1960 to 1965 and he was simultaneously the President of the Ryde Chamber of Commerce.

“During his time on council and afterwards, John Booth led the transformation of the Ryde and surrounding districts.

“He was behind the building of the Ryde Swimming Centre and he allocated the land to build the Macquarie University and even gave it the name Macquarie University.”

There is hardly a place in TWT territory that hasn’t been changed for the better through his initiative and intervention.

Ryde MP Victor Dominello takes up the story.. “ Ryde back then was full of dirt roads

and market gardens but John was keen to transform Ryde, however in order to do so he needed to manage the budget.

“So he immediately doubled the rates so that he could raise funds to build the facilities Ryde needed.

“Needless to say raising the rates was not popular.

“John recalls how his business was boycotted for 12 months.

“He was ostracised in his local community to the point where people refused to serve him drinks.”

Undaunted he pushed ahead with community projects, Mr Hayman recalled.

“He was also behind the move to purchase a large parcel of land which is now the ELS Hall Sporting Complex and converted many Ryde properties from septic to sewerage, plus many other achievements.

“Many Scout and Girl Guide Clubs throughout Ryde were founded by him and he instigated the building of their club houses.”

Mr Booth took over The Weekly Times to give the community a voice it didn’t have at a council level and he also founded the Ombudsman’s Office.

EASTWOOD’S multicultural community has paid tribute to the contribution to Eastwood’s festivals made by TWT Managing Editor John F Booth AM. Community leaders Hugh Lee OAM and former councillor Justin Li attributed the success and growth of festivals to front page promotions in this newspaper as well as on the spot coverage of festival events.

“The Weekly Times has given the wider multi-cultural community an insight into the festivals and traditions of Eastwood’s Mandarin and Cantonese speaking communities, especially to the business community and to our senior seniors,” Mr Lee said.

The Weekly Times extensively promotes Asian Lunar New Year and Mr Lee contributes a column about the meaning of each Chinese animal year.

More recently the Moon Festival has received coverage in The Weekly Times which is also proud to partner The City of Ryde in cultural events as well as Eastwood Police crime reduction and other community campaigns.

MENTAL HEALTH is a topic most of us are a bit reluctant to mention or discuss so it was pleasing to see Gladesville Rotary Club sponsored a free Public Community Forum on it at Gladesville Sporties Club on Monday night.

Professor Philip Mitchell head of the School of Psychiatry at University of NSW was the special guest speaker and presented an enlightened approach to what some might call a taboo subject.

THE WEEKLY TIMES Managing Editor John F Booth AM answers questions put to him by readers across The Weekly Times territory.

Q: You have won many awards in the last forty years, which do you regard as your most significant ? – J.M (Putney).

A: Being recognised by the Queen with the Australia Medal was significant and being awarded the first ever “Mate Of Bennelong” by Prime Minister Tony Abbott was also memorable. Rotary awarded me Paul Harris Fellowships and I am proud of all my awards for service to the Scouts and Guides and for supporting our local emergency and other services. I have also been a Ryde Citizen of the Year.

The Weekly Times is a multi award winning newspaper and it is always a honour to be recognised by the Australian media for this newspaper’s outstanding contribution to the print industry.

The Weekly Times has also received many awards for contributions to the community, most recently in 2016 when my newspaper was awarded the City of Ryde’s Event Of The Year during the Centenary of Anzac.

Q: You have taken on Federal, State and Local governments and won many battles for the local community, which were your toughest fights? - A.P (Boronia Park) A: Every year for 40 years my newspaper has fought

and defeated bad government decisions, gutless politicians and wrongdoers.The Weekly Times has twice fought – and defeated – state government attempts to abolish Hunters Hill and merge it into Ryde. My recent and successful campaign to save the Ryde Civic Centre from being sold off to property developers led to a pro-development mayor being toppled by his own party. I have also defeated many attempts to destroy our clubs, close our schools and cut our services. Some of my most important wins have been on behalf of individuals fighting the system and I have never been afraid to stand for truth, justice and a fair go, often despite powerful opposition and many failed attempts to force me to back down.

Q: You’ve achieved just about everything there is to achieve in forty years, is it difficult to set new goals and challenges? - H.G (Epping) A: My goals and challenges are the same as they were when I first became managing editor. That is, to lead a fiercely independent local paper that fearlessly upholds the truth, fights for our community and makes a positive impact in local life and in the lives of my readers. I have also risen to the

challenge of publishing an attractive, diverse and highly respected newspaper that is delivered on time, every time to every local home and business each week. An important goal is to continue to support local business because business is our life blood. People advertise with me because TWT is widely read, valued and respected.

My businesses partners include clubs, governments, politicians and corporations but they also include trades people whose survival and growth depends on being promoted in TWT. Q: You have given a start to many talented local young people who have gone on to become famous, particularly in field of sport and in the entertainment industry. Why is it important to give local people a go? - M.K (North Ryde).

A: We have also helped launch the stellar careers of local artists, academics, health professionals, scientists and community leaders.

Many local people honoured by the Queen have previously appeared in a TWT story! The world famous “Yellow Wiggle” Emma Watkins started her career as a TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen. Emma exemplifies the influence my newspaper has when it supports and promotes aspiring young people. Many other local achievers - like Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Ryde MP Victor Dominello - grew up reading TWT and many articles and photo stories continue to inspire local people to pursue their dreams.

Q: You have never missed a one hundredth birthday or a significant milestone in the lives of your readers, how do you manage to find out so much about local people? - L.S (Gladesville).

A: In the last 40 years I have met and worked with most of them but it says a lot about our readers’ respect and appreciation for this newspaper that they tell us their stories and want to see their friends and families recognised by me. Many famous locals, like Gladesville celebrity Maria Venuti AM, Dr James Wright AM and legends from

the Balmain Tigers give their time and talent to support the events I have founded, hosted and promoted. I am proud to acknowledge the contributions local people make to our local community and especially the contribution of those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in wartime. It was an honour for me to be recently chosen to present the City of Ryde banner to the people of France and Belgium at places of significance to the fallen soldiers from TWT territory in The Great War 1914 – 1918.

Q: Do you enjoy your job as managing editor? - P.P (Concord West).

A: Yes! This newspaper started as a small four page newspaper in Gladesville and since I took it over as managing editor it has grown in size and quality to become nationally and internationally famous for well informed and hard hitting news coverage.

What I enjoy most is that TWT is an integral part of the community. So many people tell me how much they look forward to TWT being delivered in their homes and businesses every Wednesday. I enjoy watching our small and loyal advertisers grow and our clubs, services and organisations continue to prosper. I also enjoy sponsoring and promoting events, like the Granny Smith Festival and Moocooboola which have grown to become major events which now attract tens of thousands of people each year. My own events – such as the TWT Sports Star Of The Year Awards and the TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival pageant – continue to grow in popularity and are highly competitive.

Q: What impact has multiculturalism had? - L.C (Eastwood) A: I have met many migrants who tell me they learned English by reading The Weekly Times! Amazing!

I have also met many more who tell me that reading TWT each week makes them feel proud they have chosen to live in our community. Publishing important community information lets recently arrived people know what is happening locally and gives them access to a new community they would not otherwise have. When I took over this newspaper I could not imagine that cultural events like Eastwood’s Asian Lunar Year would dominate our front pages, become world famous and be so enthusiastically supported by the wider local community. I also value our readership in the Italian, Armenian, Persian, Korean and Indian speaking communities and of course I am proud to recognise Hunters Hill’s French heritage.

Q: The One-Eyed Tiger has been your loyal mascot for 40 years but what is he like to work with? - M.T (West Ryde) A: Past and present Tiger players and fans adore him and he represents all that makes our club the greatest club of all. He has never missed a game in 40 years and he even toured Britain with me. His knowledge of the Tigers first grade and junior teams is unsurpassed and he is part of the culture and the history of the club. I remember his first week with TWT as a cub reporter when

From page 9 “In 1965, he became disillusioned with a number of questionable activities inside Ryde Council and resigned,” Mr Hayman added. “ He then commenced a two year campaign for the establishment of an Ombudsman, which is an independent officer to investigate the actions of public officials.

“He was subsequently appointed as Australia’s first Ombudsman and as a result of his efforts, an Ombudsman now exists in every state and territory throughout Australia and all because he took the initiative to lead a fact finding mission to Denmark where the idea flourished from its Swedish origins.”

John Booth has a close association with landmarks adjoining the Parramatta River and the craft that sail on it, Mr Hayman said.

“He lobbied the state government to name the river cat ferries after famous Australian female athletes and now all the river cat ferries now proudly wear the names of Betty Cuthbert, Shane Gould, Yvonne Goolagong, Marlene Mathews and the like.

“He was also the Foundation President for the Wallumetta Ryde District Business and Professional Men’s Club and was the first to lead the successful campaign to honour and restore the gravesite of the colonial Aboriginal leader Bennelong, in Putney.”

The long serving TWT managing editor has also been prominent at the heart of community cultural life.

“He created many annual community events such as The North Ryde Carols by Candlelight Spectacular, the West Ryde Easter Parade & Fair, the Ryde River’s Festival, The Gladesville Christmas Festival, the Granny Smith Quest Pageant and numerous other events and competitions.

“As the proprietor and editor of The Weekly Times since 1979, he has been dedicated to serving and supporting local people, local schools, aged care groups, sporting groups, returned and service men and women scouts, guides, police, hospitals, charities, Rotary,

service industries, the arts, historic properties and societies. parks, playing fields, sports, transport, infrastructure, businesses, governments and health services,” Mr Hayman added.

“Always at the forefront of community events, The Weekly Times was awarded The City of Ryde’s Event of the Year for the Commemoration of the Centenary of Anzac as well as Hunters Hill’s Event of the Year for the restoration and relocation of a World War One German Howitzer.”

Mr Hayman notes that Mr Booth is a local legend among Balmain Tigers fans alongside his mascot, the famous One-Eyed Tiger.

“John Booth was also a member of the Balmain Tigers original promotions committee that started the first Tigers Grand Final Luncheon which continues today.”

His many media awards include the National Best Editorial for a Community Newspaper for his revealing expose of the Macquarie Community College titled Where Have All the Students Gone.

This Community Newspapers of Australia award follows many other including his 2013 Award for Best Community Service by a Local Newspaper.

His previous awards include Best Advertisement (2010), Best Editorial (2008), Best Colour Advertisement (2007), Best Spot Colour Advertisement (2007), Best Advertising Campaign (2007), Best Spot Colour Advertisement (2006), Best Editorial (2005) and the Community Service Award in 2003.

“He was named Citizen of the Year by Ryde City Council for community service and his service to scouting.”

In 2001 his work for the community saw him recognised by Prime Minister John Howard with the Australian Centenary Medal for service to the Australian community.

“The world of politics and business across Northern Sydney has been shaped

by John Booth who served as President of the Ryde Chamber of Commerce and was foundation president of the Wallumetta Ryde District

Business and Professional Men’s Club.”

Heritage has been a specific interest and The Weekly Times won the State Government’s Heritage Award for the Lane Cove electorate in 2014-2015.

“His commitment to heritage goes back beyond 1961 when he co-founded the Ryde District Historical Society and he was instrumental in saving four historic houses in the City of Ryde called Addington (1798), Willandra (1842), The Retreat (1843) and Gracemere built in 1894.’

Campaigns in The Weekly Times have also been effective in saving Hunters Hill High School, Tennis World at North Ryde High School grounds from sale by the State Government.

“Many people will appreciate that he has given young women from Ryde and Gladesville an opportunity to serve the community as The Weekly Times Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen and as The Weekly Times Gladesville Festival Teen Queen.

“Various festivals and events owe their existence to John Booth and The Weekly Times including the North Ryde Community Christmas Carols, West Ryde Easter Parade & Fair, Gladesville Christmas Festival, Ryde Aquatic Festival.”

Mr Dominello summed up Mr Booth’s career to date as inspiring outstanding and wholly committed to local democracy.

“John Booth has made an enormous contribution to our community in Ryde,”the Ryde MP said.

“However in my view, his contribution to strengthening our democracy and therefore our way of life has been even more profound.

“For those of us who love democratic freedoms, we are indebted.

Renewed confidence in property market WHAT is happening to real estate prices is certainly a question on the minds of a lot of people.

The state’s newest firefighters - who include a former police officer, an army officer, a mathematician, a beauty therapist and an electrician - were the first class to recently graduate from the new FRNSW Emergency Services Academy at Orchard Hills.

They include Parramatta’s Cody Edwards and Kate Bendyke; Rydalmere’s Mitchell Blake; Gladesville’s Gustavo Panucci and Matthew Springall of Ryde.

The state-of-the-art Academy opened last year, replacing the FRNSW State Training College at Alexandria.

Minister for Emergency Services David Elliot congratulated the recruits and welcomed them into the firefighting family.

“These 16 firefighters have signed up for one of the most demanding and important roles in our community and will soon take up positions at fire stations across Sydney and regional NSW,” said Mr Elliot.

“They have proven themselves able to meet the many challenges of the job over months of intense training, from firefighting and road-crash rescue, to advanced first aid and hazardous materials response.

“They are a special group of men and women and the first of a new generation of firefighters to start their journey and hone their lifesaving skills at the FRNSW Emergency Services Academy.”

Built on a six-hectare site at Orchard Hills, the Academy will soon include a range of purpose-built training props to simulate fire, rescue, hazardous material handling and other emergency situations.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the graduates were a fitting first class for the new Academy.

“These recruits have shown they have the diverse skills, capabilities and talents required to undertake the varied work that our firefighters do – from educating the

community about fire safety and providing emergency medical care to responding to natural disasters and hazmat incidents,” said Commissioner Baxter.

“They’ve been trained to be prepared for anything and I know they will uphold the high standards of integrity, courage and professionalism expected of a FRNSW firefighter.”

“So to have new facilities where mothers groups can meet on a regular basis is terrific for the City of Ryde.

“It will be great that certain community groups will also be able to access amazing facilities at subsidised rates as affordability is important to families in Ryde.”

“It will be built for the community and owned by the community, without any residential development.

“It will also activate the Ryde Civic Centre site and resolve the chronic shortage of community space that the City of Ryde currently faces.”

Formal consulta-

tion on the new vision for the Ryde Civic Centre site commences this week, with the entire City of Ryde community encouraged to have their say on the new proposal.

Once built it will offer a four-fold increase in community facilities without the introduction of any residential development on the site.

“The proposal is financially sustainable and will not result in increased rates or cuts to any services,” the Mayor said.

“Council will also retain complete ownership of the site.”

Mayor Laxale said it is important that all members of the community take part in the formal consultation which begins this week.

“All feedback submitted during the

formal consultation period will help shape the final design and report that will be submitted to Council later in the year.”

Ratepayers and other residents can have a say until Sunday 25 August.

Another baby step on long road to new Tigers Leagues Club CHANGES to Inner West Council’s development controls that could eventually allow the proposed redevelopment of the Balmain Leagues Club Precinct were on the agenda at this week’s council meeting.

It’s the latest instalment in a 15-year drama that has seen the failure of several redevelopment proposals and financially devastated the former Balmain Leagues Club.

But re-establishing Balmain Leagues Club will require progress on a number of ongoing matters, including the NSW Government’s intention to use the site to facilitate tunnelling, fit-out and spoil removal for the West Harbour Tunnel.

Documents included in the agenda for the council meeting also provide an update on the complex arrangements being put in a rescue deal allowing Balmain Leagues Club to remain a Wests Tigers joint venture partner.

Facilitated and announced by Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne earlier this year, the rescue deal involves concessions by Heworth Constructions, which is redeveloping the Balmain Leagues Club site, and other secured creditors.

Balmain Leagues Club administrator, Greg Parker, confirms in a letter to council dated 12th June 2019, that a Deed of Company Arrangement between Balmain Leagues Club and Western Suburbs Leagues Club has been lodged with ASIC. “The terms of the DOCA are continuing to be progressed,” he

wrote.

“We have satisfied some of the obligations required by Liquor and Gaming NSW in order to progress the amalgamation.”

The deal includes Balmain Leagues Club’s release from responsibility for an outstanding loan by the NRL to Balmain Tigers and a five year commitment to funding for Balmain Football Club and its juniors.

Councillors were considering the changes to Part D of the Leichhardt Development Control Plan (DCP) 2000, to accommodate greater development potential for the proposal, as The Weekly Times was going to press on Tuesday night.

Heworth’s planning proposal for the site, exhibited publicly last year, is on hold until council resolves the DCP changes, which were triggered by the developer before being assessed by experts, followed by an extensive community engagement process.

The proposed changes would also likely result in Heworth submitting amended plans to address council and community concerns, which will also require public exhibition.

Council received 106 submissions during exhibition of the proposed DCP changes - 7 in support, 11 in support with changes, 87 op-

posed and one which expressed no view.

An Inner West Council staff report said Roads and Maritime Services’ submission has confirmed the property remains impacted and it proposes to utilise it as a temporary construction site.

“Both Council and RMS have investigated alternative tunnelling sites, and no appropriate sites have been found,” the report said.

Inner West Council has strongly opposed this proposed use of the site, including in its recent submission following the release by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) of its “proposed reference design”.

Council cited the impact on residents and businesses from traffic congestion, exposure to truck diesel emissions and noise and adverse impact on transport services - and the threat to the viability of a new Tigers Leagues Club.

“Council opposes the use of the Tigers site as a construction ‘dive-site’ for the Western Harbour Tunnel,” it said in a statement on its website.

“Council is concerned it would result in significant construction impacts and would unduly delay redevelopment of this site, essentially eliminating the possibility of a Tigers Leagues Club being established in the new development.”

The Weekly Times’ 2005 report on the “New Tigers Super Club” which fans are still waiting to happen.

St Patrick’s College Strathfield student Jack McDonald and Brett McDonald will take on male and female cube masters of all ages and backgrounds who include China’s Yusheng Du who holds the world record of completing the cube puzzle in an amazing 3.47 seconds.

Jack told The Weekly Times he is not intimidated by competition from cube masters four and five times his own age and by the possibility of “squaring off” with the cube masters of Europe and the United States.

“There is a four year old girl from India who is better than my dad at the moment,” he said.

“But the more we practice the faster we become .. we want to be the world champions!”

His best time is 14 seconds for solving the complex pyramid cube although the Australian champion Felix Zemdegs has set a benchmark time of 4.22 seconds on the standard cube.

The competition will see a computer select the same cube puzzles for all competitors who start with their hands on a mat and then solve a selected puzzle before placing their hands back on the mat in a furious race against the clock.

“It is as much about my (hand to eye) co-ordination as it is about my problem solving ability,” Jack said.

“But there isn’t a puzzle I haven’t been able to solve, so I practice my speed and my control.”

The father and son team will also have to face the challenge of having their every move scrutinised by the world’s media.

“There will be television coverage and with live streaming to a possible audience of billions of people, worldwide,” Brett said.

“We will stand out as father and son entrants, but there will be more than 300 cubers there who can solve a puzzle in under 10 seconds, so Jack and Brett are both very happy to just to have qualified for a world championship.”

The Rubik’s Cube became a universal phenomena when it was first released in 1980 and is the best selling toy of all time.

Jack picked up his first cube when he was nine years old as a gift from his grandfather.

“Once you have solved your first puzzle it becomes addictive and you just get better and better at it,” he said.

His dad – a butcher by trade - agreed.

“I picked the cube up at Easter and with a good

coach in Jack , who taught me some move sets and I got myself into a qualifying round but I only just snuck in.”

Like professional chess – where moves are also timed – cube masters have their own unique set of skills and tactical abilities with Yusheng Du known for his technique of commencing his lightning fast displays from the cube corners.

There is no cheating in the world of the cube but it could be argued there is “cube tampering” as some competitors strive for a winning edge.

“Some will lubricate their cube to make it faster and there are tools to tighten or loosen the squares,” Jack revealed.

“There are also cubes which have micro chips in them and these micro chips can send messages to devices, like mobile phones and there are many cube videos on youtube.”

Brett told The Weekly Times it is estimated “there are a quintillion cube combinations” and perhaps there just as many cube solving attempts because every human mind is unique and each attempt different.

“It is an amazing championship which includes blind solves, clock solves, feet cubing, one handed, and up to seven times seven cubes,” he said.

Once Jack completes school he hopes to go on to university and pursue his dream of being a physicist, where he will have an opportunity to solve the puzzles of life and the universe.

“What the Rubik’s cube teaches me is that if you can solve the cube you can solve anything,” he said.

“When you first start it also teaches you patience and not to give up if you get frustrated.

“The more you practice the better and faster you get.”

The cube also builds friendships.

“There is a strong community of cubers who share a common bond outside of cultures and ages, so cubers are very supportive of each other,” Brett said.

New exhibition unearths Central Station’s dark spooky history

THE untold stories buried deep beneath Sydney’s Central Station will be unearthed in the State Library of NSW’s haunting new exhibition, Dead Central that opened recently.

Dead Central brings to life the voices from the Devonshire Street Cemetery where, between 1820 and 1900, over 30,000 people were laid to rest in the sandhills bordered by Elizabeth, Pitt and Devonshire streets – where Central Station now stands.

The exhibition centres on the amazing work of local history buffs Josephine and Arthur Foster.

When the state government announced its intention to clear the overgrown and aban-

doned cemetery, the Fosters knew they had to act quickly or this incredible history of Sydney’s buried past would be lost forever!

According to exhibition curator Elise Edmonds, the Fosters spent every free moment over two years meticulously documenting mostly the Church of England section of the vast cemetery.

This was the largest among the seven sectioned denominations, and where numerous notable Sydneysiders were

buried including Mary Reibey, Cora Gooseberry and brewer James Squire.

“Mrs Foster photographed the headstones and Mr Foster carefully inked and copied the beautiful, evocative and tragic inscriptions on the headstones,” said Ms Edmonds.

The event was held in honour of International Nurses Day, celebrating the work of nurses and the aged care home’s staff with guest speakers and a high tea for those visiting.

Mr Zimmerman, who was invited to give a speech on the day, said a few words on the selfless work of the nurses.

Afterwards, he was given an oil painting by one of the home’s residents to thank him for his appearance on the day and his kind words.

The Hunters Hill Village staff had reached out to Mr Zimmerman after the federal elec-

tion.

Residents of the home had almost unanimously voted for Mr Zimmerman and they were overjoyed when he was elected their member for North Sydney.

The staff contacted his office and invited him to the Hunters Hill High Tea event and they were delighted when he was able to attend.

Sadhna Shah, Recreational Activities Officer at Hunters Hill Village, said the day was important to “celebrate International Nurses Day and to say thank you to all the staff for

the wonderful work they are doing.”

Paul Laing, whose relative is a resident, was invited as a guest speaker. He said a few touching words about the service of nurses, and how much they contribute to the lives of families. Paul thanked the Hunter’s Hill Staff for the way they cared for Alan Rowling who he cares for..

Twilight Patron, John Laurie, and CEO, Neil Wendt, also attended the event and awarded Mr Zimmerman a copy of the Twilight House’s history book, An Australian Story.

Best juniors in NSW prepare for Westfield Chess Challenge

NSW Junior Chess League will showcase its best young talent this weekend at the Westfield Chess Challenge at the Event Space at Westfield Chatswood.

The peak body for junior chess in NSW presents some of the brightest and fastest NSW juniors playing Blitz (five minutes per player, per game), a blindfold demonstration by a former State Junior Champion and a Simul, one player challenges many during the Challenge to be staged this Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30.

It is a free community service event for the public: Children and adults are welcome to be coached in chess or compete against one of the experienced

players.

The educational benefits of chess include socialisation by bringing players into silent companionship. This rapport provides a balance to a child’s more boisterous activities.

Chess games develop enduring concentration, under pressure and away from electronic devices.

Mental fixing is a useful tool for study, work deadlines, voluntary activities and in all relationships.

Every chess move is a choice with immediate consequences. Some af-

tereffects are rewarding and some have negative repercussions.

Chess outcomes teach children how to win and lose gracefully. Those who lose can rally as a stronger player by replaying the moves to learn from losses.

Chess obstacles develop creativity in problem solving: Players need a plan to escape a flawed position and tactics to manipulate the opponent into an unsound situation.

It teaches children to be calm under pressure. All this, and it is fun.

Celebrating 40 years Community leaders pay tribute to John F Booth for 40 years of independent newspaper achievements FEDERAL, state and local government leaders have paid tribute to The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth who celebrates the 40th anniversary of ownership of this newspaper this week.

Former Prime Ministers John Howard sent a letter of congratulations to Mr Booth alongside a commendation from Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who grew up in Ryde and is a lifelong reader.

A 40th Anniversary dinner at North Ryde RSL Club on Friday was celebrated with congratulatory speeches by federal, state and local government dignitaries from all major political parties and elected independents.

Bennelong MP and tennis legend John Alexander said he first met Mr Booth on the international circuit at Wimbledon and appreciates a friendship that has endured for decades and includes the successful campaign to save North Ryde’s Tennis World.

“John Booth’s character is overwhelmingly positive, he is a classic, he is timeless and I am so proud that Prime Minister Tony Abbott awarded him the first ever Mate of Bennelong title,” Mr Alexander said.

North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman described Mr Booth as “the master of the group photo” and praised his commitment to the North Sydney electorate.

“Forty years is extraordinary and there is something that lifts The Weekly Times above the pack and that is that John Booth is more than just

a community newspaper editor, he is a community leader.”

Senator Connie Connie Fieravanti Wells has known Mr Booth through numerous political campaigns waged by The Weekly Times and through numerous local events hosted by Sydney’s Italian speaking community.

She said he is a legend locally and nationally.

“Every time, at every event John Booth and his newspaper are there to report on it and he and his wonderful staff have contributed not just to this local area, but to Australia.”

Ryde MP Victor Dominello is another dignitary who grew up reading The Weekly Times and he paid tribute to Mr Booth’s authentic leadership, his passion and his vision.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson, Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale, Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett and Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer also attended the dinner.

Lord Mayor Wilson said that unlike other local newspapers, The Weekly Times never resorts to syndicated news and is highly regarded for authenticity, uniqueness, insight and on the spot reporting.

“John, if ever you are looking to expand your newspaper further, ex-

pand further into Parramatta and give me a call,” Lord Mayor Wilson said.

Mayor Laxale paid tribute to The Weekly Times recent, successful and unprecedented campaign to defeat the state government’s attempt to abolish the City of Ryde Council, Hunters Hill Council and Lane Cove Council in a forced merger.

“John Booth almost single handedly stopped Ryde from being amalgamated and the second thing he did was to stop the Ryde Civic Centre being sold off to property developers,” Mayor Laxale said “No one can question how much John Booth cares about the City of Ryde.”

Lane Cove’s Independent Mayor Pam Palmer was elected in the wake of the forced merger battle that saw a huge community backlash against the ruling Liberal Party.

She said she has known and respected John Booth and Ulrike Eichmeyer from The Weekly Times for more than 30 years and praised them for their commitment to her small but close knit municipality.

Hunters Hill Deputy Mayor Ben Collins (Lib) confessed that he doesn’t always agree with Mr Booth’s opinions.

“I actually love reading

The Weekly Times and while I do not always like what John Booth writes about me, I’m working on it!”

City of Sydney Clr Craig Chung also spoke about Mr Booth’s controversial comments.

“Some say he is a mongrel, some say he is a rat-

bag but everyone says he has got a good heart and that he wears all these negative descriptions as a badge of honour,” he said.

“John Booth keeps the politicians honest.”

That sentiment expressed by the dignitar-

RUSTY RUSSELL aged 96 was farewelled from his local church St John’s Anglican at North Ryde on Wednesday June 19 where the service was conducted by the senior minister Rev John Chappell.

The church was packed to overflowing by friends and relations, some of who had travelled from interstate including South Australia where Rusty was born.

Eulogies were presented by his son Kim and old friend John F Booth editor of The Weekly Times and like Rusty a lifelong Scout.

Wake was held at North Ryde RSL Community Club where Rusty as an ex-serviceman was a longtime member.

DORIS ROSE CARRALL aged 74 of Gladesville was farewelled from the North Chapel of Northern Suburbs Crematorium on Friday June 21 with the service conducted by celebrant Susan Gavran.

The Family Eulogy was prepared by her daughter Michelle Nichols from Melbourne while other eulogies were presented as tributes representing Doris’ varied interest groups.

These wee Peter O’Reilly from Westpac, Valerie Kovacic National Seniors, John F Booth AM Scouting, St George’s Guilds, Friends of Addington and local community associations and her good friend Mary Walker “The Pink Lady” of arthritis and other organisations.

Reception followed at Gladesville RSL Community Club where Doris was a longtime active member.

Moocooboolah Joeys Meet Snugglepot and Cuddlepie

IF you’ve never heard of May Gibbs, ask a Moocooboolah Joey Scout.

They are well-informed following a recent visit to May Gibbs Cottage at Neutral Bay. Undaunted by wind and rain, seven Joey Mobs travelled by Rivercat, train and ferry to Nutcote - the former home of May Gibbs - one of Australia’s most celebrated children’s authors and illustrators.

Joeys, parents and leaders were treated to a guided tour of the historic cottage where they saw period furnishings, memorabilia and original sketches and stories from May Gibbs’ collected works.

The highlights of the day were the dress-up room and the scavenger hunt.

Although they did not get to ride on the ferry named May Gibbs, the Joey Mobs had lots of fun on the journey, especially when the ferry rocked in the waves.

Ryde psychic confirms Gladesville site is haunted

A WELL known Ryde psychic has confirmed claims in a recent article in The Weekly Times about an abandoned house in historic Gladesville Hospital being haunted.

The article on Page 5 of the April 10 edition of The Weekly Times told the chilling story of a British backpacker’s haunted encounter at the historic hospital where hundreds of colonial era psychiatric patients are buried in unmarked graves.

Psychic William John Hanson toured the site last Friday night and confirmed that the hospital and the house are inhabited by ghosts.

“There is the ghost of a tall man, possibly from the late 19th century or early 20th century, who appears as a dark and shadowy figure and there is also the ghost of a female domestic servant, who may have been murdered but does not like to be seen ” he said.

“There is a lot of spirit activity at the hospital and although it is not malevalent there can sometimes be a dark mass of energy there that seems to be an accumulation of all the nasty things that occured when the hospital was a psychiatric prison.”

Mr Hanson said there are also the ethereal spirits of a male and a female in a tunnel that runs from the hospital under Victoria Road.

“I found it hard to determine the age these spirits were when they passed away, their names or the years when they died but I did what I could do to move

ghosts since 1960.

Magic debut for hat trick hero Sialmas

A HAT trick of goals by former AEK Athens striker Dimitris Sialmas proved the highlight of Gladesville Ryde Magic’s 6-3 victory over Western NSW Mariners in Federation NSW National Premier League 3 action last Sunday at Christie Park.

The Magic proved that they are a force to be reckoned with and moved into second spot on the competition table, just a single point behind the leaders.

A large vocal crowd gathered to witness the Gladesville Ryde Magic debut of sharp shooter Sialmas and weren’t disappointed with the Greek star coming out with all guns blazing and bagging three goals in a polished performance.

Sialmas took control of the game and demonstrated the skills, strike power and vision which made him one of the most dangerous forwards in the Greek competition.

Other goal scorers for Magic were Chris Gaitatzis, Christos Tomaras and

Aaron Khan.

With the competition just over the half way mark, Magic have placed themselves in a position to make a serious tilt at winning this year’s first grade competition as well as the Club Championship.

Magic’s next game at Christie Park will be against Bankstown United FC on Sunday July 7.

MEANWHILE in other news GHFA Spirit FC drew 2-2 with neighbours Northern Tigers.

Goals for Spirit FC were scored by Iq and Stewart.

The draw consolidates Spirit FC in third place on the Federation NSW National Premier League 2 ladder with 33 points and within striking distance of Star Gladesville Ryde Magic recruit Dimitris the leaders.

Tigers’ quick Hugh set to pounce in Caribbean

PACE sensation Hugh Sherriff (pictured) heads a talented batch of Sydney Tigers’ cricketers bound for the exotic island of Barbados next month.

The 17 year old Tigers’ first grade spearhead is part of the Mortlake-based 360 Cricket Academy team that is padding up for the annual Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools U/19 Cricket Tournament to be staged on the Caribbean island from July 7-22.

Young gun Hugh the inaugural recipient of the SCG Cricket Sir Ron Brierley Scholarship - is one of the brightest prospects in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition.

A former Australian U/16s, NSW U/17s and Cricket Australia X1 Under 17 representative, pace ace Sherriff will lead an exciting 360 Academy side to be managed and coached by Sydney Tigers stalwart Dan Smith.

Promising cubs like Green Shield keeper batsman Lachlan Shaw, all rounder Harrison Townsend who helped NSW Country/ACT clinch the National U/17s title and emerging 14 year old batsman James Moore also feature in the strong Academy side that is aiming to go one better after finishing runners up to Combermere School Bridgetown in last year’s Barbados tournament.

The Sir Ron Brierley Scholarship will assist Hugh with his off-season academy trip to the West Indies where he’ll test his skills against some of the best Barbadian cricketers

and learn to play in different conditions.

Coach Smith said it was a great opportunity for Hugh and team mates to develop their cricket and return as finer players.

Named after the great West Indies all rounder and national hero Sir Garry Sobers, this annual tournament attracts school teams under 19 years of age to compete with their local, regional and international counterparts in St Michael.

The tournament is based on 40-over matches.

Since 1986 the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament has given schoolboys the rare opportunity of playing on an international stage.

To date this tournament has produced the likes of former West Indies captain Brian Lara, Darren Ganga, Roland Holder and several English and South African test match players.

For the best two teams there is also the opportunity of playing the final at the historic Kensington Oval test venue - the oldest ground in the Caribbean and meeting some of the greatest cricketers that ever lived in the incomparable Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Wesley Hall, Sir Charles Griffith, Seymour Nurse, Joel Garner and Desmond Haynes.

After the final, a festival game is played between the Caribbean teams and a combined side from the United Kingdom.

MEANWHILE the Hawks’ all conquering Under 18s team remains undefeated in the Combined Sydney Gold competition after their fixture against Clovelly Crocodiles at Waverley Oval was washed out last weekend.

It has been a frustrating month for the Ryde Eastwood cubs who have endured two washouts, a bye and forfeit in recent weeks.

They have won all six matches played to date but are keen to get back on the field to push their claims for the minor premiership.

Tigers sign Corey for 2 more years!

Good news this week for Tigers fans as the dynamic Corey Thomson has signed up for another two years at the Tigers until the end of 2021.

By the one eyed Tiger Since joining the Tigers at the start of the 2018 season Corey has been a standout performer scoring fourteen tries in his 33 games at the club.

Corey says he is thrilled to extend his playing future at the Tigers and now he has his future sorted out he now just wants to concentrate on playing good footy and helping get the Tigers to the Grand Final.

So get set with the Main-Law’s Funeral Fund on the Tigers now while the odds are still looking good to win a motsa, Tigers super coach Madge Maguire welcomes Corey’s new deal and said it was testament to his hard work at training and commitment on the field.

Madge said that even with Corey’s experience he is still improving and growing in his game as an outside back and he is looking forward to see

him further develop in the coming years.

This week we also welcome back Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe who also praised Corey and said he was delighted to secure Corey for a further two seasons.

Corey plays with a tremendous attitude on and off the field Justin said and members and fans just love him.

He will play a vital role in the life of the club in the years ahead Justin added.

Tomorrow night Tigers will relish BBQ Bunny at Parra stadium See ya there.
