Saturday September 1 is special to us at the Weekly Times because it is our 97th birthday having been established on September 1, 1921 by Charles Halliday Engisch in Gladesville as THE TIMES changing name to THE WEEKLY TIMES some years later.

JB acquired The Weekly Times on May Day 1979 as just the second proprietor when it unfortunately

had fallen on hard times following the death of Charles Engisch and was on the verge of closure and down to four pages.

EDWARD MICELI of Eastwood celebrated his 103rd birthday on Thursday August 15 with family and friends.

Edward was born in Leni on the island of Salina off the northern coast of Sicily in 1916 and worked as a policeman for 16 years in Italy before coming to Australia in 1950 where he met his future wife Stella Speziale and special she was!

Their first daughter Lydia was born in 1951 and their second daughter Lorraine was born in 1952.

Edward and Stella

ran a mixed business in Surry Hills for 15 years before moving to Eastwood in 1968 where Edward was appointed caretaker of Eastwood Public School.

Happy birthday Edward and many more to come!

Search for the Bailey Family of West Ryde

Hi everyone, I am a Papua New Guinean, I had to join this group because my dad, John Maiva Poe Sarufa is in search of a family that provided him accommodation back in 1971.

My dad visited Australia along with 25 other Papua New Guinean boys to play rugby (Schoolboys Rugby League - 9 Stone).

In August 6, 1971 they arrived at Mascot Airport and then they were brought to Marsden High School, then they were divided up to go live with different families during their stay there.

My dad and a fellow teammate of his were provided accommodation by Mrs. Bailey (first name unknown) and her

two daughters Patricia Bailey, who was then 15 years of age and Judy Bailey, 13 at West Ryde.

My dad is now 65 years of age and he always talks about his trip to the land down under back then and the memories that he holds on to dearly.

I just thought it would be nice for him to make contact with the family that took care of him while he was there and that is why I joined this group, to look for the family that was his family during his time there.

If you would know of any information that could help me find the Bailey family, please do let me know.

Better access to new Ryde centre Dear Sir,

I do hope that Ryde Council will do something about the dreadful lifts connecting the present Civic Centre site to Top Ryde City when it explores a better pedestrian access in its new Heart of Ryde development.

I am sure there are many residents who are fed up with the inconvenience of having to walk up those steep stairs when the lifts are out of order.

Lift 6 on the Parkes / Devlin Streets’ intersection, in particular, is constantly OUT OF ORDER. It has been unusable at least once a week – if not more – for months and has failed repeatedly ever since installation.

Surely there is a better way for residents who live on that side of Ryde to access shops, services and buses now there is no pedestrian road crossing!

Older and disabled residents simply cannot cope with the steepness and number of stairs and it is too long a walk to the other crossing at Blaxland/Lane Cove/ Devlin Streets’ intersection for them.

I know of some who have just turned around and gone home when they find the lift isn’t working.

Lower bridges at both intersections with ramps that gradually incline and less steps would be a significant improvement.

Urgent need for streetlight repair Dear Sir, Albert Lim and the residents in the Cox’s Road/Marilyn Street area of North Ryde should not attempt to “jump the queue”. (TWT August 21, 2019) We in Chapman Avenue, Beecroft have been waiting action by AusGrid since the flash storm of December 17, 2018 damaged one of our streetlights (Pole No.EP80187) - and indeed many others streetlights in Beecroft Pennant Hills Road - and beyond.

AusGrid state that they have a policy of Guaranteed Service Standards of twelve (12) DAYS maximum for such repairs!!!!

Notwithstanding several emails and phone calls to AusGrid - still no action!

As this shocking poor service impinges on public safety - both pedestrian and motorist - perhaps TWT might consider pursuing a formal investigation by Ausgrid’s regional general manager - and good luck !

We wish to send this e-mail to all at the Ryde Council to support Jill Crow in her defence of the so called “attack“ classification of her dog - Sassy.

We cannot make the meeting as we already have a prior appointment at the same time. We have known Sassy since our own dog Brandy have been going to this dog park for the last three years.

We have always found Sassy completely friendly and would not harm anyone. Of course he likes to run along the fence as he likes to run as all dogs do especially in this enclosed unleashed dog area.

Sassy only usually barks when someone is running or cycling down the footpath. There are even children who run and cycle up and down the pathway to encourage the dog to run back and forth with them.

Therefore we do not regard this action as a so called “attack“ and we therefore suggest that the NSW Companion Act Section 16 should be amended to exclude the fully fenced off leash dog park.

Hunters Hill Guest Column Welcome aboard the Three Threes Express

MY LIGHTHORSE uncle Major Frank Small advised me one day to ‘see Australia son’.

A month later, hitching 70 kilometres out of Charters Towers, my anxious mother’s prayers prevailed when a goods train stopped, its crew gesturing, shouting at me.

A 100 metre dash brought me to the guards van where a gaunt, late twenties man whose straight blonde hair needed cutting, reached down helping me up with my swag.

Dressed in threadbare trousers and a business shirt, incongruously pressed and shod in a pair of thongs, he extended a hand and introducing himself as ‘Eric’.

“Where you from Dave’? he asked.

‘Sydney. I replied. ‘ Yeah? Used to work for BHP Port Kembla once, maybe I should’ve stayed there.

Been travelling this line for a week looking for work.

My brother’s an engine driver and our family lives in Townsville.

Our next stop being a collection of ramshackle corrugated iron buildings, Eric asked “do you drink Dave?’ * * * A STRING of four wheel flat cars barring our way, Eric said “No way under I’ve got to go over.”

Eric’s overnight bag bearing ‘Fly TAA the Friendly Way’ becoming airborne, landed on the flatcar’s deck with a tinkle but it wasn’t until we reached the other side that Eric cried: Drat Dave, there goes my bundy OP I smashed.

I’d never heard Eric swear.

Like me, he was of Pressy persuasion.

In the pub, he drank Four X while I settled on a Sars.

It was dark when we drew into far west Cloncurry.

His bag over his shoulder, Eric put out his hand again, saying: “This is where we part company Dave’.

I watched him disappear onto the dimly lit platform of the town where the lady on our ten dollar note, Mary Gilmore - Grandma Small’s first cousin - lay recently interned.

After midnight the train slowing to walking pace entered the brightly lit yards of Julia Creek.

When a figured person (his mother told me later (“They starved him”) clad in immaculate white moleskins, chequered shirt and new wristwatch, climbed down from the cab of three lead truck, I was astounded to find it was Smithy.

The former boy, now a man but still recognisable as the one I’d first shared steam train rides on the north shore, cried ‘Johnno what are you doing here?

The exact words he’d used when we met on the Herbert Street overbridge at St Leonards, as I looked down on a simmering 3330 in in the summer of 1953.

A week later Smithy’s brother Ross turned up along with myself, Tom and Reg, the crew letting us stow our bikes in the guards van after which we’d receive tuition in the art of steam loco firing. * * * JOLLY Jack Greaves, former Ashfield cobbler and often our driver, used to joke: Welcome aboard the Three Threes Express boys.

Three Threes, a popular gasper of the time, was advertised on Artarmon station and other locations.

Returning from the Northern Territory at different times we’d meet occasionally at our place in Burra Road Artarmon or his in Shepherd Road, where I’d sometimes catch his army captain father assaying me with shrewd eyes, a wry half smile on his face. Tragically Kev was later shot dead on

a Forbes property he was managing.

Spotlighting from a flatbed truck, he impulsively stood up in front of another hunter as he fired.

Just 33, he left a wife and three children.

Meantime, Uncle Frank ran his Ourimbah orchard with beef cattle on weekends as he took to managing MSS the security firm recently started by Devon Minchin, son of an effusive actress who had introduced my mum to my father when mum went to Melbourne midwifery training.

Engaged within two weeks, they married on an inauspicious September 4 1939.

Reverting to M.S.S Devon, having an office in Melbourne, was robbed.

Things were further complicated when the infamous Toe cutter gang and Mark “Chopper” Read became involved.

MSS went west because they could no longer get insurance, but not before the Beatles came to Sydney with Uncle Frank asking us up to their Kings Cross hotel to meet them.

Stupidly we three boys declined.

Too many yeahs being the consensus.

Interestingly as offsider in a semi, I was once going up Burrows Road St Peters when its driver, recently out of Long Bay Jail, turned to me asking: ‘How’d you like a safecracking apprenticeship Dave?

“I could teach you the ropes.”

In deference to Uncle Frank, I declined but always regretted doing so.

It would have looked interesting on my resume.

I’d like to thank Prof’ Ross Smith, Smithy’s younger brother, for commissioning the first two paintings in my series including the meeting at the waterhole and allowing me to display a loco one held in a recent exhibition in the conference room of Concord Hospital where I’m receiving treatment for Lymphoma.

2020 Australian Geographic Calendar to be launched at this year’s Romantics Art Exhibition

LAST year The Australian National Geographic commissioned Australian wildlife artist James Hough to paint a series of paintings to be produced for their 2020 calendar.

This delightful study of dingo pups and 12 others of our Australian wildlife can be seen in the calendar which will be launched at this year’s Romantics Art Exhibition in Hunters Hill.

This work has taken James over a year to research and produce - most of his research being undertaken in the animal’s natural habitat in the Aus-

tralian bush.

James joins fellow renowned Australian artists Ian Hansen, Werner Filipich, Max Mannix and Ramon Ward-Thompson in producing a top exhibition of traditional paintings which include marine art, Australian landscapes, Australian wildlife and romantic city impressions.

A HUNTERS HILL film director will have her new movie shown across the United States next year.

Director, writer and producer Felicity Pickering recently wrote, directed and produced the film titled: “Toni Fitzgerald’s Cult Following” as a tribute to Australian comedian Toni Fitzgerald.

This acclaimed film sensation divides her time between Los Angeles and Hunters Hill, where she attended Hunters Hill Primary School and where her parents Ralph and Jennifer Pickering are respected members of the local community.

“My love for theatre started when I was very young and I went to a drama camp at Hunters Hill High,” Felicity told The Weekly Times.

“I also did dance here in Hunters Hill but of course Hunters Hill is very into theatre and this contact with theatre certainly came into my existence.”

Felicity said she is thrilled “Tony Fitzgerald’s Cult Following” is set to attract a cult following overseas.

“My film premiered last weekend in Atlanta at the Women’s Comedy Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Comedy,” she said.

“In September the film will screen at Detroit Shetown Film Festival.

“I’m proud the film was made in Annandale and it stars burgeoning Australian comedians Paige Hally, Jack Gow and Julia Rorke.

“The script was gender swapped and has many women in key positions, which is also very important to me.”

The film reveals the career of Toni Fitzgerald, who started out as a struggling comic before she won a cult following.

“Toni Fitzgerald is a stand up comic but the only issue is she just is not funny; not to her workmates, not to her roommate, not even to her Mum. “So when Toni she stumbles upon a cult audience that does not approve of popular culture, she is offered an opportunity that she cannot refuse.”

This opportunity turns out to be a hoax.

Felicity Pickering began her career as a playwright and wrote numerous plays and was selected for many development and training programs for playwriting.

She was selected for the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) National Studio and a year long mentorship with ATYP for her playwriting.

Her produced works include “Mrs Bunny’s Helping Hands”, “Dredman Deadman”, “An Immersive Theatre Experience”, “Object”, “Layover”, “Neighbours” and “The Banquet”.

“I stepped into the film world at twenty three when my monologue FACON was adapted into a short film which I wrote and produced and which was directed by Josh Dang.

“It was selected for Academy Award qualifying Santa Barbara Film Festival and Flickerfest, where it received a special mention.”

From there Felicity went on to produce the independent feature “C.A.M” directed by John Scarpias.

In 2017 Felicity moved to Los Angeles where she works in film, and lives with her Writer/Director fianc, Josh Zammit.

This talented Hunters Hill muse is currently working on a new film titled “Shame On You” which she will write and direct and shoot in Los Angeles.

Phil Jenkyn OAM has his Meghan Markle moment!

PHIL Jenkyn OAM’s fame as the well known spokesman for the Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition seems to have come at the right royal expense of his own, private opinions.

Mr Jenkyn recently spoke at a council meeting in opposition to a Property NSW proposal to bury the toxic waste at Nelson Parade on site and under concrete.

Coverage of his speech in The Weekly Times identified Mr Jenkyn as the well known coalition spokesman but he clarified his comments at Monday night’s council meeting where he said he only spoke as Phil Jenkyn, local resident.

Meghan Markle is sure to sympathise with Mr Jenkyn with many of her quotes as a former American citizen inevitably linked by the paparazzi to her better known role as the Duchess of Sussex “I spoke on behalf of myself,” Mr Jenkyn said.

“The Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition has not expressed a view on the Nelson Parade decontamination issue, I have done so as an individual

citizen.”

Councillor Ross Williams also rejected any assumptions his concerns about the toxic waste were made under the Coalition banner.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex has not expressed an opinion on the Nelson Parade issue, personally or officially.

Volunteers star at Ryde Eisteddfod

RUNNING the Ryde Eisteddfod requires much energy from the Committee and the chief organisers but the friendly, happy atmosphere for which the eisteddfod is renowned is due to the amazing efforts of a large team of volunteers.

Some have been “doing it” for many years and are thought to know every trick that competitors can come up with - from playing overtime, forgetting their music, wanting to change events at the last minute …. the list is endless.

They are able to hand over this knowledge to new volunteers, who come from many different sources including, over the last couple of years - people putting their names down on the SEEK VOLUNTEERS website.

Parramatta News and Views Melrose Park development plan on exhibition but some not impressed

A PLAN that proposes the transformation of Melrose Park’s industrial area was put on public exhibition by the City of Parramatta Council this week.

It is being promoted by the Council as high-level planning document that aims to act as a guide for future development which further aims to ensure that the precinct is developed in a coordinated manner.

“The draft plan broadly identifies the proposed density, road network and open space within the precinct,” the City of Parramatta announced. “ The draft plan does not rezone any land within the precinct or change other applicable planning controls such as height or floor space ratio.

“Changes to these controls will be subject to a future planning proposal that will be subject to a separate community consultation process.”

The official website www.cityofparramatta.nsw. gov.au notes that the plan reflects the changes to Australia’s economy and the importance of new, high amenity residential development to meet the need for new housing in Sydney’s growth.

It is nonetheless expected to be met with concern by residents who are concerned with the amount of residential development on the Parramatta River foreshore as well as those concerned that the loss of industrial sites will mean the loss of local jobs.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale recently expressed concern that “overdevelopment” in Melrose Park will continue to put stress on Ryde’s roads, schools, parks and sporting facilities.

Mayor Laxale recently sought “compensation” from the NSW Government.

The draft plan will be on public exhibition until Tuesday, September 10 and can viewed at the City of Parramatta Administration Building, Ground Floor, 126 Church Street, Parramatta from Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm.

It can also be viewed on Saturday from 9.30am to 4pm and on Sunday from 2pm until 5pm at the Parramatta Central Library, 1-3 Fitzwilliam Street in Parramatta.

Melrose Park and Ermington residents can view the plan at the Ermington Branch Library on River Road, Ermington on Monday and Thursday from 10am to 8pm and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 5:30pm as well as on Saturdays from 9:30am to noon..

Written comments on the draft Southern Structure Plan are welcome and must be received by 4:30pm on Tuesday September 10.

“All submissions received by Council will be considered before final decisions are made,” the City of Parramatta Council assured residents.

Submissions must reference RZ/9/2016 and should be posted to the Acting CEO, City of Parramatta Council, PO Box 32, Parramatta NSW 2124.

“Once the plan is adopted, landowners will need to prepare and lodge individual Planning Proposals with Council to rezone and seek the legislative amendments to the planning controls,” the Council announced.

“The timing of this process will be determined by each individual landowner.

“Landowners will therefore be able to remain in place and continue to operate their businesses, until they are ready to lodge a Planning Proposal.

Once the legislative amendments have been gazetted, landowners will be able to lodge Development Applications for the approval and construction of individual buildings within the precinct.”

New partnership serves up big slice of support for businesses

A NEW business program has been launched by The City of Ryde is partnership with Service NSW to simplify the process for hospitality industry entrepreneurs.

The new Easy to do Business program aims to assist entrepreneurs to set up a cafe, small bar or restaurant.

It is a free program designed to make it faster for business owners to get their business up and running through streamlining and designing simpler forms as well as a removal of current duplication of dealing with multiple regulations and agencies.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said the Council’s involvement with the Easy to do Business program is part of a commitment to drive business growth and job creation in the local area.

“A thriving local economy and creating more local jobs is so important to Council and we want more cafes, bars and restaurants in Ryde,” he said.

“This program will help us achieve that.”

The Mayor said he hopes entrepreneurs will take advantage of the removal of red tape.

“As a former small business owner, I understand the difficulty, hurdles and red tape that people go through just to get a business up and running.

“I encourage anyone interested in opening a cafe, small bar or restaurant to take advantage of the Easy to do Business program.

“It is free of charge and importantly is targeted at the businesses that will help invigorate our local night time economy.”

Stefano Cirene, who owns Verace Pizzeria in Macquarie Park, said any initiative that helped streamline the processes needed to establish a new business was most welcome.

“This program will really benefit an area like

Macquarie Park which is experiencing an increased demand from the local community for night time business that restaurants and bars provide,” he said.

The program specifically offers specialised advice from a business concierge who helps navigate the complexities of starting or growing a business.

This includes assistance with applications for licences and permits to make sure they are high quality and decision-ready before being submitted with councils and agencies.

It also includes help with how to register a business, introductions to existing specialist support and to advisory networks that can help and provide advice on how to start your own business.

Entrepreneurs can also receive guidance to start a businesses sooner.

Wilga Park reopens with great facilities THE NEW look Wilga Park in Macquarie Park will open this Thursday.

The opening follows an extensive upgrade by The City of Ryde which includes new facilities and amenities.

This upgrade also includes amphitheatre terracing with concrete seating walls, a new amenities building, improved path lighting and new access paths as well as an accessible path from Cottonwood Crescent .

There will be a picnic area with barbecues, a filtered water station, a new landscaped boundary with a native tree canopy “A highlight of the upgrade is the installation of two eyecatching artworks named Mandala and Burst,” Mayor Jerome Laxale said.

“Mandala is an elevated, circular area featuring a dynamic floor mosaic of vibrant colours, while Burst is intended to be an expression of movement and energy.

“The new facilities will also enable community events to be staged at Wilga Park.”

Mayor Laxale said he hopes visitors to Wilga Park will relax and connect with nature.

“The upgrade to Wilga Park delivers on our Council’s commitment to provide enhanced recreational spaces that the whole community can utilise,” he said.

“Importantly, the key principles of ecologically sustainable development have been integrated into the final

design of the Wilga Park upgrades, which will conserve the biological diversity and ecological integrity of the Shrimptons Creek precinct.”

He said the new public open space at Wilga Park complements the improvements to the nearby Elouera Reserve.

The Wilga Park upgrade was funded by the City of Ryde with assistance from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Precinct Support Scheme.

Parents association urges fast action on Reiby Road footpath

In a media release to The Weekly Times from Hunters Hill High

School P&C the parents urge the council to build the new footpath they believe will ensure hundreds of students can reach the school safely.

“Every day hundreds of Hunters Hill High School students

end up traversing Reiby Road unsafely, because they do not have access to a footpath from their bus stop on the Church Street overpass,” the President of the Hunters Hill High School Parents

and Citizens Association, Martin Brown said.

“This is just not safe for the kids and it is not safe for drivers either.”

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett said the council has hired a traf-

Police officer rushed to hospital after ‘knife attack’ in Marsfield POLICE NEWS

A MAN was arrested in Ryde last Wednesday after he allegedly attacked a police officer with a knife.

The police officer was rushed to hospital with non-threatening injuries after he was allegedly slashed around 9am on Culloden Road in Marsfield.

Police allege they observed the man walking in the middle of the roadway and when approached by police he lashed out with the knife and had to be subdued by a Taser before he was arrested.

NSW Ambulance paramedics took the man under police guard to Royal North Shore Hospital.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage are

urged to contact Eastwood Police Station on 9858 9299. **** A STOLEN car and an alleged thief were apprehended by police in Gladesville on Thursday night.

Police alleged the car had been stolen in 2016 and the 25 year olod suspect from Ryde was asleep in the car when approached by police around 10pm.

Well known Ryde viola da gambist Jenny Eriksson has been performing across Australia and around the world for almost three decades.

In 2019 her highly respected group, The Marais Project celebrated its 20th anniversary with the release of a new CD, The Garden Party.

“I didn’t think we would last 12 months, let alone two decades”, Jenny told The Weekly Times recently.

Given this fear, her output has been impressive: six CDs and a seventh recording with Eriksson’s electric viola da gamba group, Elysian Fields.

There have also been appearances at festivals, a tour to New Zealand and Sweden as well as numerous media interviews and live studio broadcasts.

Along the way she has commissioned and premiered more than 25 new Australian compositions and given some 3000 performances with Musica Viva in Schools.

As the name implies, the 20th Anniversary CD has a festive theme and includes several world premieres, not the least of which is Eriksson’s own composition, The Garden Party.

In addition, there is a superb arrangement for viola da gamba and piano accordion of music by her group’s namesake, Marin Marais.

As far as Jenny is aware this is the first Australian recording of music for this unique combination.

“The Garden Party summarises our first 20 years and provides a launching pad for the years to come”, Eriksson said.

“I hope audience will love it: we had a ball making it!”

Q1: The Ryde LAC has one of Sydney’s lowest crime rates, why do you think this is?

How can the local community and police work together to reduce cyber crime?

A: Ryde Police Area Command has a relatively low crime rate when compared to other areas of Sydney and NSW. This can be attributed to the command’s tireless work to prevent,disrupt and respond to crime in the command.

A: Become aware and educate yourself, your family and friends. If it seems too good to be true – it likely is. There are a lot of great online resources available with advice on how to protect yourself and how to identify a scam - scamwatch. gov.au and cyber.gov.au are both great resources available to the public.

Q2: Your crime team can be congratulated on a reduction in crime in key areas and with significant arrests and successful prosecutions.

What do you consider to be your team’s most significant achievements in the past year?

A: The significant achievement of the command is our focus on along term strategic approach to crime prevention. Community engagement and a focus on crime prevention and disruption activities continues to bea key area of success. When Ryde PACresponds to reported crime these matters are subjected to vigorous investigationresulting in high legal action rates.

The command has a renewed focus on proactivity and team operations resulting in the identification of crime in the command Q3: Cyber crime and scams are on the increase across Sydney.

Q4: In recent TWT interviews with the community, a major concern remains the local road toll. Is there anything that can be done to reduce it?

A: Drivers should be more aware of their surroundings, obey the road rules and not exceed the speed limit. Too many drivers are being distracted by technology such as mobile phones and GPS devices. They need to be concentrating on what’s going on around them. This not only applies to drivers but also to pedestrians.

Pedestrians need to pay attention and not be distracted by their mobile devices. It is important that pedestrians use the appropriate crossings and do not walk against the ‘Do not walk’ signs.

Too many pedestrians are killed or injured because they have taken short cuts or been distracted while crossing

the road.

Q5: Your team has made some major drug related arrests in the past year, is there one consistent factor that has led to these successful arrests and if so, what is it?

A: The work of our General Duties, Detectives and Proactive Crime Team has attributed greatly to these positive results. We always appreciate information from members of the public to assist in intelligence gathering and investigations. Q6: Senior Constable Lewis has done a lot of pro-active work with our newspaper to reduce car theft and theft from cars.

Do you suspect the opportunistic criminals committing these crimes are local people or those from outside the area?

A: No specific trend has been identified in relation to where the offenders reside. Offenders who reside within and outside of the command have been identified as being involved in offences.

Recently, we have experienced a number of instances of steal from motor vehicle offenceswhere victims have failed to secure their vehicles which is a timely

reminder to lock your vehicles and avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle.

A: The Ryde PAC DV Team has taken every opportunity to encourage members of the community to report domestic violence although we do believe that there is still a lot more we can do.

WHETHER you are an experienced sailor or have just been dreaming of becoming one, it is time to come on down to Concord & Ryde Sailing Club.

The 2019/2020 sailing season commences Saturday September 7 and anyone interested in sailing is always welcome.

Concord & Ryde Sailing Club is a family friendly dinghy sailing club located at Kissing Point Park, corner Waterview Street and Yaralla Road Putney.

Each Saturday afternoon a large number of dinghies take part in racing on the Parramatta River between Ryde Bridge, Majors Bay and Brays Bay. In 2020 the Club will be celebrating 75 years of sailing on the river, so this is a perfect opportunity to check it out.

Several different types of dinghies take part including: Spirals, Tasars, NS14’s, Herons, Sabots, Optimists, Catamarans and Firebugs.

Sailors of all skill levels are catered for from beginners to State and National champions.

Concord & Ryde Sailing also has an active Cadet fleet and popular Learn to Sail programs for young sailors and adults.

The Club is registered

as an Active Kid provider which enables two $100 vouchers per child for parents, guardians and carers of schoolenrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year.

Parents, guardians and carers can now apply for the second $100 Active Kids voucher.

Voucher 1 is valid from January to December and Voucher 2 is valid July to December.

Junior Sailing Courses: This course is designed to progress the younger sailor (8 to 15 years) from beginner to advanced racer. Courses are conducted each Saturday in the sailing season (September to April) from 9am to 12 noon (excluding Christmas and Easter holidays).

Modules are five weeks duration commencing with Start Sailing 1, Start Sailing 2 and Better Sailing.

Course commencement dates are September 14 to October 12; November 2 to November 30; February 8 to March 7.

School Holiday Camps: These camps are designed to enable

young sailors (8 to 15 years old) to complete the Start Sailing 1 module over three consecutive days in the School holidays (9am-4.30pm) with lunch and refreshments included.

The next camps are from September 30 to October 2 and January 20 to January 22, 2020.

Adult Learn To Sail: Many of their sailors have graduated from the Adult Learn to Sail Program.

The program is suitable for both adults and teenagers over 15 and ideal for families who wish to learn together.

It is conducted over five Saturday mornings from 9am to 12 noon and five Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8pm.

Program is structured around CRSC’s fleet of Spiral dinghies. Graduates from the program can continue to use Club boats to participate in Intermediate Spiral races to continue to build their skills.

Graduates from CRSC’s Adult Learn to Sail Program are usually competent to sail a small dinghy unaided and can graduate to In-

termediate Spiral Fleet to continue to build their skills.

Dates for the next courses are September 14 to October 12; November 2 to November 30 and February 8 to March 7, 2020.

Life jackets and dinghies used in training are provided by the Club.

Ryde author reveals his father’s experience in The Great War

THE HORROR of The Great War has been brought to life in a startling biography written by a Ryde man as a tribute to his late father.

In an exclusive for The Weekly Times for this special Fathers Day edition, Ryde author Jim Hobson reveals the wartime experience of his father Private George William Hobson who was gassed on The Western Front in 1918.

Private Hobson left no diary and his son painstakingly pieced together anecdotes and archival records of his father’s service in the 4th Battalion AIF, which served with distinction in the great battles of Gallipoli, The Somme and Ypres.

Some anecdotes came from stories passed on from father to son about the macabre experience of trench warfare.

“George spoke of a time when he jumped into a shell crater under shell attack only to find a dying German officer who begged George to kill him and gave him a pearl handled pistol and matching knife,” Jim Hobson said.

“But when daylight came the German was dead.

“As George told me this story he mimicked the painful cry of the German officer and using a high pitched voice spoke, in German, the dying words of this wound-

ed soldier.”

No Western Front battalion – Australian, Canadian, British, New Zealand, French or German – would be spared the nightmare of the frontline fighting as streams of soldiers were routinely pushed forward to replace the dead and dying.

For the 4th Battalion, that meant fighting alongside Scotland’s Gordon Highlanders.

“George said that when the Scottish soldiers were wounded they would scream the loudest and their blood was redder than anyone else and would spurt the furthest.”

Not yet 21, Private George Hobson was selected as a runner when runners were selected because they were fast and intelligent.

For many runners, it meant leaving the shelter of a dugout and almost certain death.

“George told stories of himself being a runner and as well as carrying messages he had to carry canteens of cocoa up to the front, along with his rifle, pack and ammunition.

“He said that this equipment and supplies would equal have his own weight

and would cause him to become bogged down in the mud.

“When he reached the trenches he would be abused and sworn at because the cocoa was now cold and the men in the trenches just wanted to sleep.”

The dugouts in the trenches were cramped, narrow, bombarded by enemy artillery and targeted by enemy snipers.

“They were also infested with rats and lice which would make the skin very itchy, cause trench fever, headaches and muscle and bone soreness.”

Horses and men bogged down in the mud were left to die but the horror was to intensify during the last months of the war when the Germans introduced a new weapon of terror; poison gas !

In 1918, Private George Hobson was among the victims.

“It was on May 25 that Private George William Hobson was wounded, gassed in action.

“The mustard gas stripped the mucus membrane from the bronchial tubes and caused great pain.

“Those affected had temporary blindness for days and they

were instantly incapacitated.

“He was taken to the 14th General Hospital on May 26 and then admitted to the Royal Herbert Hospital.”

As well as recording the tragedy of war, this son’s tribute to his father also records the bravery of the Australian troops as well as their tenacity and successful tactics.

One hundred years ago this year, the surviving Australians we ready to return home.

“George spoke of the men from Australia, New Zealand and Canada that had left France after the Armistice.

“These men were frustrated by authority, very restless and not willing to accept the discipline dealt out to them by the British Military Police.”

Private George Hobson was discharged on March 7, 1920 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

They are not the only medals sacred to Jim Hobson, who also inherited the Victory Medal of William Josiah Barnes.

“It was believed that William had no known relatives so toward each Anzac Day, when I polished my father’s medals, I also polished William’s medal.”

Private George Hobson died in 1972 and is buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Botany.

Art Workshops at Eden Gardens ARTMAKER Caitln Hepworth (pictured) will run a Smalti Mosaic workshop this Saturday August 31 at Eden Gardens, 307 Lane Cove Road, Macquarie Park.

Caitlin has over 20 years’ experience teaching and making art, practicing artist working predominantly in sculptural mosaic. She lives and works in the Blue Mountains and is the director of Hughes Studio – School of Visual Art and Mosaic.

Caitlin is also running a Kids Mosaic workshop this Sunday September 1.

Artist and photographer Paula Broom will run an Instagram for Creatives workshop on Sunday September 15 at Eden Gardens - designed to help creative people use Instagram to best show off their work or creative life.

Bright futures tipped for promising All Saints Hunters Hill U/8 Blues

MEET the mighty All Saints Hunters Hill U/8 Div 1 Blue colts that dominated this year’s GladesvilleHornsby Football Association competition.

EXPERIENCED campaigner Fausto Alcuri (pictured right) recently captured the Gladesville Mens Bowling Club Minor Singles championship for 2019 after toppling stalwart Peter Coyle 31-15 in the final.

Under the guidance of coach Robert Volpato, the undefeated All Saints carved out an impressive record that included 14 victories and three draws from 17 games played.

The team comprised of a mix of promising footballers from Villa Maria, Hunters

Hill and Boronia Park Public Schools with the young guns racking up 78 goals during the season while conceding only 14.

All Saints’ two main strikers - Joseph Boyle and Jack Phillips - contributed 34 goals between them which proved a tremendous feat.

Dynamo midfielders Billy Kerrison, Ryan Volpato, Nicholas Fairfax and Cristiano Grassia demonstrated their value by scoring another 40 goals between them.

The team prided itself on watertight defence with top prospects Cody Stubbs,

Richard De Angelis and Flynn Schlederer showing their wares.

The talented trio used their sharp speed and tackling ability to keep opponents scoreless for many of the games - and even finished among the goal scorers themselves.

Skilful Hawkettes chase Womens Open trophy

RYDE EASTWOOD Women’s Open Age rugby league team are the toast of the district after roaring into this Saturday’s NSWRL Combined Sydney Eastern Conference Grand Final at Redfern Oval.

The courageous Hawkettes square off with the all conquering Redfern All Blacks in a crackerjack title decider - and the Ryde girls are confident of turning the tables on their nemesis.

Led by impact forward Jasmine Barlow, the Hawkettes have proved tough to beat this season with superb performances in the Women’s Open competition.

They finished second on the table behind the All Blacks during the preliminary rounds and have developed into a real force under the coaching of Anthony Gagliardi and his assistants Graham Condon and Rod Zakarija.

The Redfern girls, who have lost only one match all season, gained a psychological edge over their rivals a fortnight ago when they registered a 22-14 victory in a bruising major semi final at Yarra Oval.

But Ryde Eastwood are primed for revenge after eliminating Mascot Jets from the premiership race with a spirited 1410 triumph at Birchgrove Oval.

The strong running Barlow has turned in dynamic performances in the preliminary rounds and has spearheaded the Hawkettes title charge.

A strapping back rower with a high work rate and the ability to bust the line and offload to supports, Jasmine has proved a sensation along with clever half back Rhiaan Te-Hira, fullback Jessica Post and key players Steph Spooner, Tamika McCabe and Bridie Hill.

The Hawkettes go into Saturday’s Grand Final brimming with confidence after producing one of the best defensive displays of the season to sink Mascot.

cord Golf Club which was awarded a grant to purchase four defibrillators in the last round of the program, bringing the club’s total to five.

General Manager Glenn Phillips said due to the club’s demographic, it was vital there was access to this potentially life-saving equipment from anywhere on the course.

“The golf course spans 43 acres and due to the distance from the clubhouse to the furthest hole, we felt it was imperative that we

install additional defibrillators,” Mr Phillips said.

“We now have defibrillators installed in purpose-built huts next to tee boxes around the course, providing quick access in the event of an emergency.”

The Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program is a four-year $4 million NSW Government program.

As we said last week the new look Tigers have saved up their best for last and now are roaring all the way to the Grand Final.

DAVID NOFOALUMA scored a hattrick of tries in the Tigers 46-4 win on Saturday supported by tries to Ryan Matterson, Robert Jennings, Esan Marsters, Luke Garner and Michael Chee Kam.

Last Saturday they showed up the light weight daily screamer pundits who had written the Tigers off that they are the real thing in 2019.
