LONG established local insurance broker Leo Driessen and wife Bernadette will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary tomorrow (Thursday). The couple met at a Catholic Youth Organisation dance in Mosman in 1966 and were married in St Mary’s Catholic Church North Sydney on October 31, 1969. They purchased their first home in North Ryde in 1970 and moved to their current home in Marsfield in 1987. Both of them are still working in their own insurance broking business in North Ryde - Leo having chalked up over 50 years service - which makes them true locals. Leo and Bernadette have two children - one son Matthew and a daughter Angela, who also works in the family business and is the next generation after three generations of insurance brokers that span over 100 years. The couple have three grandchildren - Maddison 22, Taylor 20 and Olivia 13.

They love playing lawn bowls, enjoy Rotary fellowship and knitting for the community.

Civic Reception for 40 Years of Service

FOUR MAYORS were among dignitaries who honoured the 40th Anniversary of John F Booth AM’s ownership of The Weekly Times at a Civic Reception in the City of Ryde’s Mayoral Suite on Thursday night.

Former Ryde mayors Edna Wilde OAM, Jim Hull OAM and Vic Tagg have held the mayoralty during Mr Booth’s leadership of this multi award winning local newspaper.

JB as he is affectionately known by many, applauded current Mayor Jerome Laxale when he presented him with a civic award in recognition of his four decades of local publishing.

Mayor Laxale said he is honoured to host the civic reception, which he recommended to council.

“The resolution to host this civic reception got through without debate and you just have to look at this week’s edition of The Weekly Times to see John Booth’s involvement with the community,” Mayor Laxale said.

He said that while he did not always share Mr Booth’s opinions, no one could doubt his passion for the Ryde community.

Mr Booth praised Edna Wilde as “one of the best mayors Ryde has ever had” and recognised Jim Hull’s contribution in naming the North Ryde Common in a competition organised by JB and The Weekly Times in co-operation with then Gladesville MP and another former mayor Ivan Petch.

JB organised the first public event on the North Ryde Common the TWT North Ryde RSL Youth Club Community Christmas Carols Spectacular which was a sensational success and seven years later JB invited North Ryde Rotary Club to continue as the TWT Rotary Christmas Community Carols Spectacular which continues today on the third Sunday in December led by Roseanna Gallo OAM. The managing editor and owner of The Weekly Times also paid tribute to Vic Tagg’s service to the community as mayor and as President of the Eastwood Chamber of Commerce.

The City of Sydney was represented at the civic reception by Clr Craig Chung.

Former Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson, Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett and City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas have paid tribute to Mr Booth’s achievement alongside Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM, Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, Ryde MP Victor Dominello, Drummoyne MP John Sidoti as well as former Australian Prime Ministers John Howard who wrote a weekly column in The Weekly Times when Bennelong MP and PM plus Tony Abbott who named JB the “First Mate of Bennelong” together with Ulrike Eichmeyer Booth.

This year I am supporting Rare Voices Australia. This wonderful organisation supports the more than 2 million Australians living right now with a rare disease, with almost half that number being children.

The reality is that most attention is directed at the individual diseases that affect the largest numbers of people. This is understandable, but when considered collectively, rare diseases affect more people in Australia than even diabetes. So we need to improve how these people and their families are supported in society.

Please support Rare Voices Australia in their wonderful efforts supporting those with a rare disease, by generously donating as I pass through your neighbourhood on the 100km walk.

It all starts this Monday 4 November at ELS Hall Park, Kent Rd, North Ryde from 11:00am. If you’re in the area please join me for the first kilometre (or 100)! response which virtually dismissed my claims there were three more drive by shootings in the western suburbs and police in Victoria arrested dozens of young people of African background for violent crimes including car jacking, home invasion, and robberies.

I also pointed out to the huge amount of the drug ice coming out of China, imported by Asian gangs, that is killing our kids.

His response was “perhaps there have been some”.

A few days after making this statement our magnificent police officers raided drug houses in eight suburbs in Sydney including West Ryde, Epping and Eastwood.

Yes fellow readers Bob Selinger’s own suburb.

And those arrested shock horror were not of Greek, Italian or Anglo Saxon background but Asian.

Conservation concept often misunderstood

Dear Sir, Letter writers Newman and Selinger (or Laurel and Hardy as I call them) always give me a good laugh with their responses to my published material.

Dear Sir, I would just like to say how much we appreciate the views expressed in your ‘Pro-Denistone Heritage Conservation’ article last week.

Take Selinger who claims to be a school teacher.

A few weeks ago I wrote a letter regarding African gangs terrorising parts of Melbourne and drive by shootings in the western suburbs of Sydney attributed largely to persons of Middle Eastern back ground. Not long after his

The Heritage Conservation system allows for normal development on non-Heritage homes in the area, by applying for Development Approval, to Council, as has been the case for many years, until recently.

For non-heritage homes the building approval under the heritage conservation area proposal does not change significantly from what was operational for many years until independent certifiers took over about two years ago!

Due to the building approval changes introduced by the State Government recently, we understand that any property/residence with a frontage of 12 metres or more can have a new building approved and Council has no authority to stop it.

The only way we can preserve the character of the Denistone area is through a Council Local Environment Plan or a Heritage Conservation order.

Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and many others, have this kind of protection and their values, as far as we are aware, have not dropped!

To keep our community characterised by ‘homes’ not just ‘houses’, the pleasant garden atmosphere and a ‘community’ we need to follow the leads of Hunters Hill and Lane Cove.

We should not want to allow some people, for whom profit is the main motivation, to succeed, rather than considering what is best for our neighbourhood.

Delivery program recognises excellent work in community

THE REVIEW of the delivery program tabled at the Council meeting on Monday October 21 outlined many significant achievements in our focus on the community, leadership and governance, managing and preserving our environment, making getting around easier, and maintaining the character and managing growth planning of our municipality.

HUNTERS HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor MARK BENNETT I recommend all residents review the report to understand the excellent work being done within our Municipality.

This report is now available on our website.

In addition, Council achieved a net operating surplus of $986,000 including capital income (grants and contributions) and a deficit of $495,000 when these items are excluded.

However, had a $1million payment due from the new bus shelter contract been received as budgeted and expected, a positive operating result would have been achieved.

This $1 million revenue will now be carried into the 2019-20 financial year and added to our other initiatives, contributing to a positive operating result, including capital income, in 2019-20.

Further, we have a plan to work through the estimated 8 per cent asset improvement backlog that was assessed by our recently-engaged Asset Engineer.

Across NSW this backlog ranges from 0 to 24 per cent.

New night time trading responds to growth in Parramatta’s economy

THE CITY of Parramatta has had an unprecedented level of resident, worker, student and visitor population growth and investment, the Council revealed this week.

In response Parramatta is now moving towards a night time economy with extended trading hours.

“With the third largest night time economy by turnover in NSW, we are a well-established night time destination known locally, regionally and nationally,” Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

“However, we recognise the need to diversify our night time economy to meet the needs of our diverse community, provide greater opportunities for local businesses and to attract and retain talent and investment in our City.”

To meet this demand, the Draft Parramatta Night City Framework 20202024 (PNCF) outlines a series of strategic actions for planning for the future growth, management and diversification of Parramatta’s night time economy and prepares it for a transition to a 24-hour centre.with later trading local centres.

The Framework identifies six key strategic goals for the development of a night city in Parramatta that is safe, vibrant, diverse and interesting.

It further identifies key focus areas for Council in achieving our goals, nominated as planning and regulation, community safety and engagement, business and cultural development, research and advocacy, infrastructure, marketing and promotion.

“The Framework will be the roadmap by which Council will create the right conditions to enable our CBD to become a 24-hour centre in the future, with later trading centres full of interesting things to see and do.”

The Council now invites resident feedback on the Draft Parramatta Night City Framework.

“Visit our engagement portal where you can read the full Draft PNCF or a summary version and complete a survey to provide views on aspects of the Draft PNCF that are important to you.”

Submissions close at 5pm on Monday November 11.

“We have now updated our strategy to incorporate requirements under the

Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979.”

Under this Act, the Councils must outline how and when it will engage the community about planning functions like policy-making and assessment.

“Our draft strategy covers non-planning matters too and has also been developed according to requirements set out in the Local Government Act 1993.”

“It details how Council will engage with the community, and how you can have a say on projects that impact you or that you’re interested in.

“We value input from the community and stakeholders.”

This Community Engagement Strategy will hold Council to account as it helps it create more liveable communities and a better public policy and aims to ensures people are at the core of what it does.

The survey is available in Arabic, English, Hindi, Korean and Simplified Chinese.

Vibrant mural brings a splash of colour to Eastwood’s dark tunnel

RENOWNED mural artist Xander Zee has given the dark railway tunnel under Eastwood Railway Station a splash of colour.

Zee’s tunnel mural titled “Granny Smith’s Orchid” was officially opened this month as part of a civic project by the City of Ryde to beautify public areas through the use of street art.

He said the urban artwork was designed by public art enterprise group Muralisto and features a vast array of colours and imagery that are designed to brighten the previously dark underpass area and make it “more welcoming” for pedestrians.

Laxale said he expects the community will take pride in the new look tunnel.

“The vibrant colours and unique design of this artwork not only adds beauty and visual interest to an underpass that was previously dark and dull, but will also instil a sense of pride for this public space within the community,” he said.

“It will also act as a graffiti deterrent and reduce instances of anti-social behaviour in and around the pedestrian under-

pass.”

The concept design for the artwork was developed with input from the community focus groups and site specific engagement teams that include The Ryde Youth Council and the Arts Advisory Committee.

With the completion of the artwork at the Eastwood pedestrian underpass, the City of Ryde will now consider the feasibility of introducing additional artworks at specific locations which could benefit from street art projects.

Fire destroys sports building

A HERITAGE sports building in Concord West was burned to the ground on the weekend. Police are investigating the blaze and have set up a cordon around the area, which is next to the Concord RSL Club.

Heritage policy opponents have their say at council meeting CITY of Ryde’s proposed heritage conservation reforms have attracted strong opinions, both for and against it.

The proposed policy has the support of Mayor Jerome Laxale and aims to conserve heritage homes and heritage neighbourhoods from inappropriate development.

It also proposes to list historic homes in historic neighbourhoods which could be protected by a council policy.

Opponents of the proposed policy dominated last Tuesday night’s council meeting and here is what they told councillors: “It is pretty suspicious to me from an historical perspective, the whole area is pretty gone al-

ready.” – Dominic Wang “Our house has been substantially modified, it is completely unrecognisable from the original form. Heritage listing would impose an unnecessary cost burden on us.” – Daniel Wong “I do not believe the heritage study is fair. How stupid do you think I am ?” – Novella Wilkinson “I live in Chatham Road, Denistone and I am very upset with the wrong behaviour of Ryde Council. It is illegal to proceed with this plan

Better not pursue heritage listing without the owners’ agreement.” – Guanjing Ruan “There are 800 new apartments around Eastwood Public School and now Ryde City Council wants to list the school as heritage. Several speakers objected to the process and procedure being used by the council to pursue the proposed policy, despite assurances by Mayor Laxale that all resident submissions will be considered.

Lane unsuccessfully attempted to introduce emergency motions to have the issues raised by these speakers debated at the council meeting.

Mayor Laxale ruled against both attempts because the debate is scheduled to come before a council meeting towards the end of the year, when all public submissions will have been received.

One speaker warned that – if the policy is adopted – it will create a precedent Premier Gladys Berejiklian will use to impose a government backed heritage listing policy across Sydney.

Planning panel approve Rowe Street East car park in Eastwood Eastwood’s chronic parking shortages are one step closer to being resolved after the Sydney North Planning Panel approved the City of Ryde’s development application for a new shopper car park on Rowe Street East.

The multi-storey car park will be able to accommodate about 150 cars and will incorporate sustainable features such as electric vehicle charging stations into the design.

Once completed, this new car park will make it even easier for our community and visitors to enjoy everything Eastwood has to offer and provide a boost to our local economy.

After the awarding of a successful tender, construction of the car park is due to begin in 2020.

Rave reviews for new street art It has been great to see all the positive comments about the new artwork at the Eastwood pedestrian underpass.

Council commissioned the artwork as part of efforts by Council to beautify public areas through the use of street art.

Many people have commented about how the new artwork has brightened up the pedestrian underpass and transformed what was previously viewed as a dark and dull area into a welcoming space.

Council will continue to consider the feasibility of installing new street art projects at locations around the City of Ryde.

Police called to council meeting after alleged assault of a female councillor 12 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 30 October, 2019

A COUNCILLOR was allegedly assaulted and six police vehicles were rushed to last Tuesday night’s City of Ryde Council meeting, which was shut down by Mayor Jerome Laxale.

Labor Clr Edwina Clifton (pictured) was allegedly grabbed by a member of the public gallery in a hallway next to the council chamber around 9.30pm and Clr Bernard Purcell rushed to her aid, warning the alleged offender to keep his hands off her.

It is believed the man had attempted to photograph her despite her requests not to do so.

Visibly shaken, Clr Clifton later tendered a statement to police who had also been called to a previous meeting in response to aggressive behaviour from a woman in the public gallery.

The drama came amidst a walkout by four councillors and other disruptions which left the meeting without a quorum.

Events deteriorated after repeated attacks on the Council’s proposed heritage

policy by members of the public gallery who spoke at the meeting.

The walkout immediately followed unsuccessful attempts by Clr Jordan Lane and Clr Dr Peter Kim to have the heritage issue dealt with as an emergency motion.

Mayor Jerome Laxale told The Weekly Times he is shocked and appalled by what happened.

“I am deeply disturbed to have a female councillor allegedly assaulted,” Mayor Laxale said in a statement to The Weekly Times.

“I am also disturbed that people in the public gallery had been whipped up into a frenzy with misinformation about our proposed heritage policy.

“This is what happens when people disrespect the rules.”

The Mayor also expressed concern with

the councillors’ walkout.

“I am disappointed with this shameful disrespect for ratepayers and the positions they hold as councillors,” he said.

“I will call out anyone who deliberately disrupts a functioning council meeting.”

He stressed that the walkout came at a cost to ratepayers who pay for council staff to attend meetings.

“I was elected to do a job and I will do this job and these councillors who walked out should do the job they where elected to do.”

Liberal Clr Jordan Lane was warned by the Mayor he faced a Code of Conduct charge for leaving the meeting but defended his action.

“I will always stand up for the community, not for the Mayor,” he told The Weekly Times.

City of Ryde financial meeting a fiasco

A CRITICAL council meeting called by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale to lodge annual financial statements failed to go ahead on Thursday night because a required number of councillors didn’t show up for it.

The finances will need to be submitted to the state government by this week’s end of year deadline.

The Mayor was forced to abandon the meeting shortly after 7pm due to a lack of a quorum, which prompted a furious Clr Bernard Purcell (ALP) to condemn the missing councillors.

“Certain councillors are putting the financial structure and reputation of this council in danger by pulling a stunt like this,” he said.

The Thursday meeting was called after the proceeding Tuesday night council meeting was abandoned when some councillors walked out, which also left that meet-

ing without a quorum.

Mayor Laxale apologised to ratepayers who attended Thursday’s night’s meeting.

“I apologise to the residents who turned up but we need seven councillors to have a quorum,” he said.

“To those councillors who are present, thank you for turning up and do-

ing your job.”

No Liberal councillor turned up on Thursday despite the City of Ryde budget being in surplus.

Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou and Clr Dr Peter Kim (ALP) were also absent while Clr Roy Maggio (Ind) and Clr Chris Moujalli are away on council approved leave. *****

PROPOSED PUBLIC ACCESS to waterfront land in Putney has divided the community and has led to waterfront home owners threatening the City of Ryde with legal action to stop it.

The waterfront land has been earmarked by the council for a narrow walkway as part of the Ryde River Walk but the home owners want to keep the public off what they regard as their own land.

“The loss of our access to the water would significantly impact on our property values,” George Citer from the Waterfront Action Group said during last Tuesday night’s council meeting.

“We have unlimited funding available and we will fund action through the highest court available.”

Resident Errol Penrose said he is protecting his legal access rights to the foreshore and said comments attributed to Mayor Jerome Laxale (ALP) about landowners being selfish are insulting and bullying.

Labor Councillor Penny Pedersen believes the public does have legal access rights and she said she supports the River Walk extension because it will benefit “the greatest number of people in

Ryde”.

Liberal Clr Trenton Brown accused her of ranting on with socialist ideology.

“People worked hard to purchase their waterfront property and now the socialists want to waive resident rights by what Labor calls public rights, this is just Labor bringing forward ideological crap.” **** THE LIVES OF CHILDREN are at risk from dangerous behaviour on roads outside Meadowbank’s Skateboard Park.

Locals Arienne Bourne and Tina Bean warned councillors at last Tuesday night’s council meeting it is not a matter of “when, not if ” a child will be killed or critically injured riding a skateboard, scooter or bike on the roads.

“We have seen hundreds of children weaving in and out of traffic and we ask for a reduction in speed, a shared zone and education and we want council to act before the next school holidays,” Ms Bourne said.

Tina Bean called for regular council and police patrols.

“Some of these kids are five and six years old,” she said.

A recent campaign in The Weekly Times has led

to a pedestrian crossing outside the skateboard park and council staff have agreed to investigate the latest concerns. ***** SIX MONTHS after The Weekly Times revealed the deteriorating condition of Lardelli Park in Putney, local residents are angry by what they say is an on going failure by the City of Ryde and Fraser’s Property Group to do anything to improve it.

by Fraser’s under a recent deal that saw the Group take over land formerly occupied by the Royal Rehab.

The park is in the process of being transferred to the City of Ryde.

The Weekly Times reported on the condition of the park and pond, where several ducks were found dead.

Resident David Harvey described the alleged lack of action as “shameful” and “a risk to public health” while neighbour Don Cangelosi wants to know when something will be done.

“Six months has elapsed and we have not seen any progress,” he said.

“The pond is full of algae and we are just asking to get something started.”

Taffa’s Mitre 10 West Ryde store to close

WEST RYDE will soon be losing one of its oldest established businesses, starting way back in 1955, some 14 years before man landed on the moon, Taffa’s Hardware has a long and cherished 64 year history of being part of the local community.

At its helm was its founder Ron Taffa who dedicated his working life to hardware and serving the community, it can’t go under estimated the impact he made to the emerging suburb of West Ryde in its early years.

Ron provided an enormous amount of building materials to the growing suburb of West Ryde and the broader Ryde community watching it grow into the great part of Sydney that it

is today.

The store has always been very community minded, sponsoring local football and cricket teams and donating merchandise to local schools and community groups to help them raise money for various charities and organisations.

Since 1980 the business has been part of the Mitre 10 group and became known as Taffa’s Mitre 10, two of Ron’s children entered the business in the 1990’s and have held

the management reins ever since.

It’s been a wonderful 64 years, however time has now come full circle and as local community desires have changed it is time to say goodbye to a faithful servant of the community.

A NEW footpath on Reiby Road outside Hunters Hill High School will be built early next year.

Hunters Hill councillors voted unanimously on Monday night to fund construction as well as widen to footpath where hundreds of students have risked their lives darting in and out of traffic.

The council decision is a victory for the school P&C and staff who have relentlessly fought for the footpath for years.

“Council has driven more than one parent to tears over this and we only want what every other school in Hunters

Hill has,” P&C spokesperson Jacqueline Crompton told Monday night’s council meeting.

Councillor Ben Collins pushed for the work to be completed by the start of next year’s school term but this was not feasible according to General Manager Lisa Miscamble who said that a project of this size would need to go to tender.

The project will be funded from the council’s unrestricted cash reserves despite Dep-

uty Mayor Jim Sanderson’s belief it should be funded by the state government.

Liberal Clr Zac Miles disagreed.

“To suggest that the building of a footpath is a state government responsibility, not a council responsibility is ridiculous and I am not going consider options to slow this project down,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Sanderson also attempted to link the footpath to sought after government fund-

ed street safety work around the Hunters Hill Village shopping precinct, but he only received the support of Clr Elizabeth Krassoi.

Small council seeks big loan

A MULTI MILLION dollar loan could be taken out by Hunters Hill Council to fund a maintenance backlog.

Councillors on Sydney’s smallest council voted unanimously on Monday night to investigate the option of a T-Corp loan and sums of around $10 million dollars were touted at the meeting.

Farewell George Robb

On behalf of the members of NRRSL sub-branch, I extend our deepest sympathy to George’s wife Norma, daughter Janice and her husband Brett, their children, George’s grandchildren Adam, Lauren and Scott.

We owe a great deal to those men and women who offer their service in times of war. Without them, our lives would be quite different.

George served his country well in peace and in war and together we mourn his passing.

For his service with distinction, in the British Merchant Navy which he joined on February 3 1943 and had his 16th birthday crossing the Atlantic to Canada.

George saw service in the North and South Atlantic and The Arctic Circle to Murmansk in Russia. Also the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. George was also at the D-day landing in France. He arrived there on D-day Plus-1. He was discharged on August 17 1947.

For his service, with distinction, in the British Merchant Navy During WWII and beyond, George was awarded the 1945 Star, Atlantic Star & Bars, awarded for The Invasion Of France and the Russian War Medal for being In Murmansk.

How well he served his fellow man.

In addition to that service, he was well known to his fellow members of the RSL who stand with me, here mourning the passing of one who was a loyal co-worker with us.

As we stand here remembering his

New Eastwood car park will go ahead 20 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 30 October, 2019

THE Sydney North Planning Panel this week approved The City of Ryde’s development application for a new shopper car park on Rowe Street East in Eastwood.

The new multi-storey shopper car park will be located at 53-71 Rowe Street East with a capacity for 150 cars.

Feedback received during Council’s community consultation on the car park has been incorporated into the design and construction of the car park is expected to begin early next year.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said the new car park will attract more shoppers to Eastwood, more often.

“With great restaurants, ca-

fes, shopping, culture and recreational opportunities, parking is in high demand in Eastwood,” he said.

“This new car park will also go a long way in addressing a current shortage of parking and will make it even easier for our community and visitors to enjoy everything Eastwood has to offer as well as provide a boost to our local economy.”

He said the new car park meets the City of Ryde’s future vision.

“In line with City of Ryde’s

commitment to sustainability, Council will be including charging stations for electric vehicles as part of our car park design.”

The development application was lodged by City of Ryde in March 2019.

The Local Planning Panel that approved the car park is one of many independent panels that determine development applications on behalf of councils, now a mandatory requirement under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

“People should also ensure they get sufficient sleep, and keep their mind active. Stimulating the mind benefits the brain,” says A/Prof Goo-

zee.

“It’s natural people fear a dementia diagnosis.

However, if people do show signs of the disease, an early diagnosis is absolutely essential because it gives people prompt access to medical attention and medication. There are several medications available that help maintain quality of life and stabilise cognitive decline for some people.

Orana number one at dream Destination

CONSTRUCTION is in full swing at a master-planned Macquarie Park project which the Meriton group says will be an ‘island’ haven standing apart from other residential developments in the suburb.

The four-stage Destination ultimately will house 3500 people and is intended to be a Macquarie Park market leader.

Meriton, the nation’s largest developer of apartments, says the location is a dream one in an area that has surged in popularity.

Director of sales James Sialepis says Destination will be a pacesetter that offers its residents refreshing tranquility in a corner of Macquarie Park that is ‘remote’ from the suburb’s more densely developed areas yet close to all the amenities that makes Macquarie Park such a special place to reside in.

“The icing on the cake are the views, which take in the Sydney CBD 13km away and uninterrupted never to be built out views of Lane Cove National Park, which is nearby.”

The first stage, 27-level Orana is starting to climb skyward on a 2.37 hectare site across from the Macquarie shopping centre, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, and on the doorstep of Macquarie University and the Macquarie Park Metro station.

Orana will include an 80-place childcare centre and three retail tenancies.

Its 219 homes start at $635,000, and buyers have an array of living choices.

Six townhouse-style apartments will have rooftop terraces akin to backyards, with turfed areas, and direct access from courtyards to podium gardens.

Orana will be crowned by five four-bedroom penthouses, also with rooftop terraces.

The Orana’s one, two and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses will have internal areas of between 54 and 105sqm, many will have studies or media areas, and some will have two parking bays in the groundlevel undercover parking area.

Residents will enjoy lifestyle facilities that include a gymnasium, 20- metre indoor pool,

and spa and sauna.

Mr Sialepis says Macquarie Park is rapidly appearing on the radar of investors because the suburb ‘means business’.

“It’s home to Sydney’s second-largest office market and has enjoyed the fastest growth in stand-alone office employment of all major centres over the last two decades.

“That growth rate is coming in at 6.6 per cent a year, which means more jobs and a

swelling demand for housing, including rentals.”

Mr Sialepis said Macquarie Park was forecast to have 27,000 residents by 2036.

“That’s hardly surprising given that by then it’s expected to have 79,000 jobs.”

Macquarie Park has an economic output of $9.1 billion and ranks as Australia’s 10th biggest location for economic output, behind North Sydney and Adelaide CBD.

Rubbing salt into the wound was the Wanderers’ ‘extra man’ on the night - the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) - which marred what was an otherwise action-packed match with two highly-contested calls.

Vocal Sydney FC fans who provided a carnival atmosphere for others to behold on the train ride from Central Station to Parramatta and the short walk to Bankwest Stadium, were more sobre as they made their way back to the station after the match.

The Sky Blues controlled the game from the start and were inches away from being rewarded when Ninkovic sent a dinked effort onto the crossbar.

The Serbian was denied again later in the half along with striker Adam Le Fondre but it was the Wanderers who went in at the break 1-0 up thanks to a Mitch Duke header.

It was much of the same in the second half, with Brattan and O’Neill controlling the midfield, while Barbarouses was denied a goal by the VAR when his header came off the post, and was ruled not to have crossed the line.

The Sky Blues were also denied a penalty by the VAR after the ball clearly hit the hand of Baccus as Sydney FC flooded the Wanderers half with attacks, while Lopar made a fabulous save from Barbarouses.

In the final minutes, McGowan chested the ball to Ninkovic who was six yards out only for a Wanderers’ defender to make a last-ditch challenge.

Despite being in control of the game, the Sky Blues suffer their first defeat of the season and return back home to Leichhardt Oval on Friday night when they take on a winless Newcastle Jets side.

“It’s a bit difficult to take. I’m so very proud of the boys, they dominated from the start to finish, said Sydney FC coach Steve Corica said after the match..

“Milos was sensational tonight. They couldn’t get out of their half. I’ve got a lot of disappointed boys

Corica was visibly incensed during the VAR decisions during the match, directing a torrent of abuse at the fourth official, but was full of praise for the Saturday night atmosphere at Bankwest Stadium.

“The pitch was good, the stadium was great, it was a top derby, just the wrong result,” he said.

NSW caps for elite Tigers cricketing young guns

SYDNEY Cricket Club’s new generation of elite young talent are on the prowl and making an impact on the NSW Premier Grade Cricket and representative scene.

Emerging Tiger cubs Hugh Sherriff, Harry Manenti, Lachlan Shaw, Ellis Sherriff and Jack Nisbet are outstanding prospects to watch this summer and firmly entrenched in the NSW State Junior squads.

18 year old pace ace Hugh Sherriff - who shares the new ball in first grade with Tigers’ tearaway Nic Bills - will represent the Cricket Australia X1 at the Male National Under 19 Cricket Championships in Perth during December.

Youth international Hugh is currently sitting for his Higher School Certificate at Christian Brothers Lewisham and has spent time on the sidelines nursing a damaged finger.

The strapping paceman will be joined at the Carnival by Sydney’s rising all rounder Harry Manenti, 18, the kid brother of Tigers and Sydney Sixers off spinner Ben Manenti and son of Australian Womens Rugby Sevens and Eastwood coaching guru John Manenti.

Harry, who skippered the Tigers to a Green Shield U/16 championship alongside bowling spearhead Sherriff in 2017, will don the NSW Metro colours.

Promising quicks Ellis Sherriff and Jack Nisbet along with talented wicket-keeper batsman Lachlan Shaw have just returned from the National U/17 Cricket Championships at Mackay after helping NSW Metro reach the final.

Western Australia lifted the Bob Parish Cup trophy after rolling the Blues by one run in a pulsating title decider.

Shaw, 17, captained the NSW side and showed his exceptional skills with the gloves and bat during the tournament which included a valuable 25 runs in a low scoring Grand Final.

Sherriff and Nisbet shared the new ball for the Blues with 16 year old Ellis grabbing 3-31 off his seven overs which included the wicket of boom WA skipper Cooper Connolly - the Player of the Tournament - for 68.

MEANWHILE former Sydney young gun Liam Scott has carved out a magnificent 126 for South Australia in a Toyota Second X1 match against NSW Metro last week at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval.

19 year old Scott smashed 18 boundaries and a six during his superb 140 ball knock to help the Redbacks salvage a draw.

A Ryde native, Liam has linked with the Glenelg Cricket Club in South Australia this season after establishing himself as one of the country’s finest young cricketers.

The former TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year finalist played his junior cricket with the Ryde-Hunters Hill Pirates before stamping his mark with the Sydney Tigers first grade X1 and NSW and Australia Youth teams.

Robson ton inspires Dolphins

A MAJESTIC unbeaten century by number four Angus Robson steered Eastern Suburbs to a dramatic third round victory over Sydney in NSW Premier Cricket first grade action last Saturday at Drummoyne Oval.

Robson’s majestic knock of 154 not out proved pivotal for the Dolphins in a high scoring two day encounter - with rookie NSW paceman Harry Conway smashing four boundaries off seven balls to help secure a thrilling two wicket triumph for the visitors.

The former Leicestershire bat cracked 20 boundaries during his epic 209 ball knock to lay

the foundations of a stirring win.

Earlier Sydney declared on their first day score of 7-379 that featured a magnificent 124 by young opener Justin Mosca - his second in the top grade - and dashing half centuries from Matthew Rodgers (74 runs off 120 balls), Beau McClintock (60 not out off 69 balls) and all rounder Alex Glendenning (52 not out off 45 balls).

Mosca’s impressive ton was a springboard for the Tigers’ batting unit and set the tone for a competitive tally.

The talented cub faced 215 balls and hit five boundaries and four sixes - figuring in a second wicket union of 155 with the established Rodgers.

McClintock and Glendenning added an unbroken stand of 93 for the eighth wicket with the latter thumping four

boundaries and four sixes in a cavalier 45-ball knock.

Conway was the pick of the Dolphins’ bowlers, snaring 2-44 off 20 overs.

In a tense run chase, centurion Robson was ably supported by Adam Ezekiel (72 off 110 balls), NSW keeper Peter Nevill (55), Henry Thornton (30) and a blazing Conway who brought up the winning runs with a flurry of boundaries.

Long serving Umpires Convenor Colleen was recognised for her dedication and support of the Association’s club umpires at Meadowbank Park Courts.

The perpetual trophy commemorates ERNA’s late Umpiring Committee colleague Carolyn McLeod.

A fine ambassador for the sport, Colleen has been playing netball with North Ryde RSL since the age of eight and started her umpiring experience as a 16 year old.

She boasts a 40 year association with North Ryde RSL Netball - playing and coaching teams and mentoring umpires for more than two decades as well as holding a position on the ERNA Badging Panel.

Colleen, who has held a Club Committee position for over five years, has a real passion for mentoring umpires.

She devotes many hours with each one to

give them the best possible foundation for being a confident umpire on court.

The teams at Meadowbank Park aren’t the only ones who have benefited from Colleen’s excellent umpiring - she has umpired at representative Carnivals, State Age, State Championships, State League and Metro League levels.

Colleen recently moved to the Central Coast with her family, however she still drives to Meadowbank Park to support her club’s UDPs and badged umpires.

Testimony of her dedication to North Ryde RSL Netball she works with officials to discuss the progress of each umpire and suggests appropriate graded games for them to be placed on to ensure they increase their skills and experience - with the aim of having each umpire progress to their next badge level.

A Badged umpires currently at ERNA. Skilled and committed umpire mentors are not that easy to find and everyone at ERNA values Colleen’s time, efforts, experience and enthusiasm.

MEANWHILE North Ryde RSL Netball Club capped a memorable 50th Anniversary season in 2019 by winning seven premierships.

Seven North Ryde RSL teams lined up at Meadowbank Park Courts on Grand Final Day - and brought home an impressive seven titles. Colleagues topple Hillies

HUNTERS HILL Pirates Cricket Club are finally up and running in the 2019-2020 City & Suburban Cricket competition.

The Hillies tasted a first up loss to Colleagues at Boronia Park Oval last Sunday - dusting off the cobwebs in keeping with the Halloween season.

After winning the toss and batting first the Colleagues posted 7-164 with left handed opener Jim Feilen top scoring with a dashing 61.

The Pirates’ Manish Misra opened from the playground end and proved economical off his seven overs, grabbing 2-36.

Hunters Hill legend Andrew Hobden from the other end went wicketless but kept the Colleagues honest

while conceding 33 runs off his eight over spell.

After 18 overs the Colleagues were cruising at 2-109 but the drinks worked its magic.

James Woods snared the wicket of Feilen, who was caught at cover, on the first ball of the 19th over.

Alex Miller continued his spell, picking up another wicket to finish with 2-26 off nine overs.

Imran Ali helped put the brakes on the run scoring with a tidy spell of 2-18 off six with the support of spin twins in captain Rodney Bourgonjen

and Marco Angelini.

Hunters Hill were soon reeling at 4-48 after Colleagues’ versatile bowler James McCathie spoiled the day - picking up two quick wickets bowling seamers before changing to spin and grabbing another two.

Miller compiled a stoic 19 and Bourgonjen (23) as he partnered with Steve Drake (7) to put on a final wicket partnership of 28 to make a respectable tally of 113 in front of friends and partners who had come to the ground for a twilight Ladies Day of drinks and canapes.

Benji was named skipper of the Kiwis for the Oceania Cup test clash against the Kangaroos and eclipsed the record of another champion Tigers half back in Gary ‘Whiz’ Freeman, who previously held the record with 19 appearances as a Kiwi captain.

The mercurial Marshall is backing up for another season in the NRL with the Tigers in 2020 when he will start and close his footy career at the Tigers with

premiership wins first up in 2005 and in closure in 2020.

Another Tigers favorite forward workhorse Chris Lawrence will also lace up his boots again next year to join in the grand final celebrations.
