Block & Butcher As consumers do we honestly know where the meat we eat is coming from? Sometimes we don’t ask questions because we wouldn’t like the answers... At the Block and Butcher we want to fly the flag of transparency. We won’t use misleading wording or convoluted supply chains. We will use local farms as much as possible, who raise native breeds so we can sell the best pasture raised meats. We do this so we can support sustainable farming and offer an ethical way to buy delicious meat. The world of farming and butchery is under constant scrutiny, but we are proud of ALL of the answers we can give when it comes to the difficult questions - so please do ask!!

Another big push for noise mitigation Brackley Rd and Wendover Green Tunnel, short notice the news that a large number of We are not giving up on convincing those in power that the current scheme is ill-thoughtthrough and damaging. At the November meeting, we received match-funding from Wendover Parish Council to help further our mitigation plans; we have a pragmatic solution for the 1000+ homes which will directly suffer constant noise disturbance on an ongoing basis once the trains arrive. We are working closely with the support of our MP, Rob Butler, to ensure that HS2’s contractors, EKFB, fully consider our solution of a single retaining wall. We are pleased to report that at time of going to press EKFB have agreed to study and cost our proposal for due consideration. We remain hopeful that our proposal will be included in their upcoming planning submission (schedule 17) for the North Cutting. This progress is particularly important given the recent news that a tunnel for Wendover shall not be forthcoming with Rob Butler withdrawing his support for such a solution.

Traffic Appeal overturned but Buckinghamshire Council push back The Planning Inspector has concluded that the proposed lorry route from Amersham to the “Green Tunnel North Portal Compound” beside the Wendover bypass should go ahead. He notes that the peak traffic movements could “rise to 536 Large Goods Vehicle movements per day”.

but they are now challenging all six of the planning inspector's decisions as this is in the best interests of all residents who are being badly affected by HS2-related HGVs using inappropriate local roads. Remember, if you witness poor behaviour or see a lorry in Wendover, take a picture and send to enquiries@whs2.org. We will use it to assist Rob Butler and Buckinghamshire Council in their negotiations with HS2.

Demise of Ellesborough Cottages

The demolition of the cottages on Ellesborough Road is now imminent (at the time of going to press), with the gardens behind the properties being cleared to allow access for the contractors. Resulting spoil from the demolition should be removed and used on the new access road that has been established to the bypass in the field Community mitigation funds behind the (now closed) Cricket Ground. See There are a small number of projects pictures below. being successfully received for Wendover & surrounding villages. We encourage all groups to submit their pitches for mitigation funding. We have been supporting individuals who have been badly affected by HS2 plans, with some success. If you have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, please get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org and we’ll assist however we can.

Small Dean Piling

We have shown Richard Lumley, the new Buckinghamshire Council Service Director responsible for HS2, around the local area and pointed out the implications on the A413. As such, we are very pleased to learn that Bucks Council has decided to launch a Judicial Review (JR) against the four outstanding HS2 route applications relating to the A355/413. A JR is a particularly important aspect of the constitutional settlement in the UK, it is a process and court case where a judge or judges decide whether a public body has behaved lawfully. Buckinghamshire Council received six construction route applications Public Rights of Way under threat and previously challenged two relating to Rather distressingly, we received at very  Personal Training  Muscle Building  Nutrition/Diet  Fitness Programmes 50% off any packages  Weight Loss booked before Christmas

key Public Rights of Way (PRoWs) were being shut. These are very popular walking routes for residents and visitors in and around our town and worse still, alternative walking routes were not forthcoming. We have asked the Parish Council to intervene to pressure Buckinghamshire Council to resolve this urgently, as the lack of notice for walkers was insufficient, in our view, and the proposed diverted route was also insufficient. We remain very concerned that the few PRoWs which remain open are under threat of overuse and long-term damage. We are also very concerned that these highly popular PRoWs will never re-open, and this cannot be allowed to happen. You can see the map of where these are on our website www. whs2.org.

Following the recent test piling, HS2 were planning to “sheet pile” a retaining wall next to the Chiltern Line at Small Dean where the viaduct will cross over. Sheet pile walls are retaining walls constructed to retain earth, water, or any other filling materials. These walls are thinner in section compared to masonry walls and are generally used for waterfront structures. This planned activity has been delayed on safety grounds due to the protestors in the tunnels in the vicinity. See more about sheet piling on page 15.

At an all-parish meeting held with Sir Mark Worthington and Stephen Burke (Chair, The Lee Parish Council) it was made clear that all contractors up and down the line are not fulfilling their engagement role sufficiently and are tending to pay lip service to concerns of all Parishes, so we are not alone. Bucks Council have launched a judicial review for the recent traffic applications which are different to those in the original Environmental Statement, in the hope that HS2 Ltd will start respecting those statements which should serve to protect us

from issues not in the original Bill. Rob Butler is keen for us to consider other mitigation options and Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group have been given some financial support to further their alternatives to alleviate noise issues in North Wendover. And so, it continues, the closure of public footpaths is being investigated and in a recent conversation with EKFB, they are trying to offer alternative routes, some of which may have to be on roads, to join up the network. The Sheet piling works next to the railway were delayed until the protestors were evicted from their tunnel so weekend closures can now be replanned. The demolition of Ellesborough Rd cottages is scheduled for the end of November, as I write. Other Schedule 17(3) planning applications for the Small Dean Viaduct, cut and cover tunnel and various cuttings are now overdue and unlikely to appear before Christmas. When these are received, we will be able to see exactly what EKFB and HS2 Ltd have planned for Wendover! Sheila Bulpett - Chair, WPC HS2 Working Group

The month started with a quiz and supper. How good to get back to some semblance of normality after so long. It will take a little while to get our social scene back on its feet but, with time I'm sure it will happen. A suggestion that there should be no more ladies only matches, as they had been poorly supported in the past, was overturned. Men's Sheds

I’ve always enjoyed learning new skills but it was only when I was looking at what I was going to do following my retirement from procurement in the NHS that I thought about setting up my own business. I employed a colleague who was skilled particularly on the IT side of things. The difference in working on my own compared to working with others was noticeable. As a man I had also been conscious of the difficulties I had had with my own mental health. The fix I got by working with someone who had a shared objective was tremendous. Men are useless sometimes at admitting to problems – especially health problems. My work in the community as a volunteer and as a previous Chair of the local Parish Council spurred me into action and I became a member of Men’s Sheds. There are Men’s Sheds north of Aylesbury and at Amersham but nothing in Wendover.

Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and unlike women of a similar age, fewer older men have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries. It is not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. Men’s Sheds can change all of that. Sheds are about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. As a by-product of all of that they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, they allow men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent, they rebuild communities and in many cases, they save men’s lives. My mission is simple! To get a small group together – so far there is me, the Minister of the local Free Church and a local Countryside gentlemen's group. We will meet in the New Year with a view to obtaining support from the local community and the organisation of Men’s Sheds itself to set up a Men’s Shed in Wendover. Men’s Sheds are vital. Stella Kubale has recently been appointed as the new Head of Fundraising at the Chilterns MS Centre. The Wendoverbased charity empowers people living with multiple sclerosis to thrive through physical therapies, practical support and social connections. Stella has over ten years of experience working with commercial partnerships in national charities, including Samaritans and the RNLI. She has been responsible for securing and delivering high-value national charity partnerships including Helly Hansen, Ford UK and Haven Holidays. The charity has some incredible corporate partners and Stella's experience will help to grow these connections further. Stella will be responsible for all income streams, including community and events, trust fundraising and the charity's major donor programme. On her appointment, Stella said “I feel very privileged to join the Chilterns MS Centre and am looking forward to getting to know our members, corporate partners and supporters. Local News Wendover u3a Anniversary

Wendover u3a recently celebrated its 21st Anniversary and marked the occasion by planting a tree and installing a memorial bench in Ashbrook playing field. We planted the tree on 4 October – it’s a Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), a British native. The flowers are a pollen and nectar source for pollinating insects, while the berries are eaten by several bird species. The plaque on the bench reads: In celebration of the 21st anniversary of Wendover u3a in 2021 and in memory of those who suffered in many different ways in the Covid pandemic.

Can you help?

Do you or your friends know of a family who have recently had a baby or are about to in the next month? After 21 years of secondary school teaching; I decided to have a career change. After passing a child counselling diploma I have started an MA in child psychotherapy. As well as working on placement at a primary school and going to college once a week to learn theory, I need to complete a child observation. This involves observing a baby with their family to observe the growing relationship over two years; 80 weeks in total. I am looking for a family who have recently had a newborn or are due in the next couple of weeks. If you know of anyone who would be interested in this unique, special experience please message nicola@sylvanwoodservices.co.uk. Nicola Wood

Good News or Bad News?

On 2nd November I was walking down Lionel Ave and the next minute was spread-eagled face down on the pavement. I knew that I had

done something to my left arm and immediately five people had gathered around me. Their kindness, care and thoughtfulness turned what could have been a nightmare into a good experience. They phoned for an ambulance, contacted my husband, kept me warm with blankets and a hot pad, and chatted to me about anything and everything. So the hour of waiting for the ambulance to arrive passed quickly and pleasantly. As one of these lovely people later said, "it was almost like a street party"!! How kind and thoughtful most people are. I can never thank you all enough for your help to me on that day. And, in the midst of so much bad news, I wanted to share this good news with all who read it. Oh, and what happened to me? That's the bad news! A dislocated elbow and fracture at the head of the radius! But, it WILL mend. Glenys Newman

There was a large congregation at the Annual Memorial Service in St Mary's on Sunday 7 November. For some it was the first gathering they were able to attend because only very low numbers had been allowed at funerals. As a mark of all we had lost during the time of Covid, a Memorial Tree was planted in the Churchyard after the service. The awards are open for nominations until 31 December and aim to recognise and applaud outstanding community contribution carried out by local individuals, groups and organisations.

Aylesbury Nightstop

Not knowing where you are going to sleep can be terrifying and isolating. Homelessness leaves people vulnerable and makes the simplest of daily tasks a challenge. Compared to the national average, Aylesbury Vale has 22% more young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Local charity Youth Concern runs Aylesbury Nightstop. Nightstop’s aim is to prevent any young person from experiencing a homelessness crisis. Since 2012, Youth Concern have provided emergency accommodation to 150 homeless young people in Aylesbury Vale.

Proud of Bucks Awards

They celebrate Buckinghamshire’s communities that have made a positive impact in their local areas. More information on the awards including how to nominate someone from your local area can be found on www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/ community-and-safety/proud-of-bucks-awards/.

Nightstop offers a few nights’ short-term emergency accommodation to homeless 16 25 year olds. Trained volunteer hosts provide a safe place to sleep, a meal and a warm welcome for one young person at a time. Each young person is thoroughly assessed to ensure the safety of the host. With the basics covered, Youth Concern then works with the young homeless person on finding a longer-term housing solution, helping them get their lives back on track.

2021 Christmas gift appeal launches to help support Buckinghamshire’s children The annual Buckinghamshire Christmas gift appeal launched in early November. And this year it is being led by new local charity Inspire Bucks. Now in its seventh year, the appeal is a big drive to give Christmas presents to vulnerable children in Buckinghamshire who otherwise might not receive much – or anything – at Christmas. Last year the new Buckinghamshire Council took over hosting the appeal from the former county council. And, like last year, the effects of coronavirus restrictions accentuate the need for this popular seasonal campaign. Last Christmas almost 1,200 Christmas gifts were presented to children, young people and families with disadvantaged backgrounds. This year Inspire Bucks chairman Paul Irwin says that the disruptive effects of the coronavirus pandemic make it all the more important to ensure children in crisis or need have a happy Christmas.

" T h e s e Christmas gifts go directly to very vulnerable children here in our county, and I’ve seen the wonderful difference this makes to their families,” said Paul. “Thanks to the fantastic generosity last year, Christmas was a time of cheer for these families. This year I’m asking the people of Buckinghamshire to pull out the stops again!”

Anita Cranmer, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “The Inspire Bucks Appeal will make a huge difference to the hundreds of children that the Council works directly with through Social Services. In addition the appeal will brighten Christmas for the wider group of children whose families have been in difficulties in the past year. It is inspiring to be able to give care and gifts through the enthusiastic and generous work of this Charity.”

Paul said gifts of money would ensure suitable presents could be bought for all ages, including children with additional In the interests of safety, he says, the appeal needs and disabilities, older children and is inviting donations of money online via the young people leaving the Council’s care. charity’s GoFundMe page https://gofund. Tribute: Tony Defriez Tony was born in 1948, the only child of John and Joan Defriez who were living in Chesham Bois at that time, moving a few years later to Amersham. He attended St Mary’s school in Old Amersham and when old enough to travel home from school on his own, he would save his bus money so that he could spend it on sweets at Mr Corn's shop. He went on to Dr Challoner's Grammar School, where he said he wasted his education! On leaving school Tony worked with estate agents Howard, Son and Gooch. He knew he did not want to travel to London, stuck in an office all day. Thus began a career that lasted over 50 years. It was in 1970, whilst working in Amersham, that he met Rosemary, marrying in 1973. They set up home in Wendover as Tony had taken a position with Brown and Merry (B&M) in 1971. Tony had a very long career with B&M in Wendover. In June 1977, Tony and Rosemary welcomed the first of their 3 children, Christopher, Ian in 1979 and Niki in 1981, by when they had moved to Bedgrove.

In 2010 Tony left B&M and after a few months of ‘gardening leave’ he opened the new Wendover office of Tim Russ Estate Agents. This took him back to his roots of being, as he would say, a proper estate agent. He retired from the office in June 2017, and up until the pandemic, continued to work as a consultant, seeing clients that he'd known well over a very long period. In 2013 grandchildren started to arrive: Oliver, followed by twin girls, Effie and Halle, then in March 2017 Harry and in August Adley. Lindengate Charity Lindengate – Better Health & Wellbeing for All, Through Nature

• Meet up with friends to exercise, whether a walk, run, or drop in to Lindengate during one of our open to all sessions (see website for opening times) • If you like to be active in the garden, there’s no reason why you should stop just because the temperature drops. You can plan a Winter garden, so there is always plenty to see and do, during the colder months of the year.

As the colder, darker weather continues, it is tempting to stay in the warm rather than exercise. However, it is important for us all to maintain our physical and mental wellbeing. There are many benefits to spending just a few minutes a day outdoors. Here are some of them: • Regular exercise outdoors every day can improve both our mood and our physical health, leading to reduced stress and increased self-esteem. • Some research also suggests moderate exercise can strengthen the immune system, reducing the risk of coughs and colds. • Always make sure you’re warm before you go outside. Wear several layers to keep heat in and warm up for 10 minutes before you start.

We look forward to welcoming you to Lindengate, where nature breathes new life into anyone looking for a little support with their wellbeing. Situated over 5 acres, take time for yourself and let nature nurture your wellbeing. For more information on Lindengate, programmes & events, go to: www. lindengate.org.uk. See advert page 5.

RAF Halton Haddington Helicopter Play Park – Impact of Vandalism Over the past 12 months, the Helicopter Play Park between Haddington Road and the Princess Mary Gate Estate, Wendover, has been vandalised numerous times at a cost of approximately £8k to the MOD. The play park underwent a full refurbishment in 2015, along with other play areas in the local community, at a cost of £450k but in recent months has been the target of repeated vandalism.

To the local community, this park is a well-used and loved facility. Unfortunately, due to the selfish actions of a few, it may now face permanent closure. Following the recent damage, DIO are undertaking the necessary repairs but will be unable to make any further financial commitment if the vandalism continues. Any further equipment damage will result in the permanent removal of the affected item(s) to maintain safety, ultimately leading to the closure of the park.

Rough Sleeping

Over the night 10-11 November, Sgt Short, Cpl Barratt & Cpl Pingree all slept rough to help raise awareness of homelessness. All proceeds from their BIG Sleep Out will go to SSAFA (the Armed Forces charity) and centrepoint (a youth homelessness charity).

Local Face: Father Livie Father Livie Onyebuchi MSP has come from Hatfield to serve the Roman Catholic Church of St Anne which is part of the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Bedgrove. He was born in South East Nigeria, also known as Igboland and on finishing secondary school in 1982, he went to Lagos, returning East in 1985 by which time he already knew that he had a vocation even though his brother was expecting him to join him in a business venture. His first time at Mass was at the age of 3 and he still remembers the Parable of the Sower. After contacting the local Diocese about priestly formation, he discovered the Missionaries of St Paul (MSP) and entered their Seminary. This required two years of initial Spiritual Formation followed by three years studying Philosophy then a further four of Theology. The vigorous training was to fit him to adapt to every circumstance and be able to flourish in an unfamiliar culture. Of the 25 students who started with him, only 8 reached Ordination in 1994.

before returning to the Seminary as Lecturer after 6 years in 2003. By 2004 he had become the Academic Dean and Registrar. He was moved to become Rector of St Albert Instutute of Philosophy and had hoped to have a Sabbatical in 2011 but instead was sent to set up a new Seminary and Institute of Philosophy, Christ the King, in Kafachan to the North East of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The first Seminarians graduated last year. Most young priests spend a year as a curate and Father Livie (Livinus) started as an administrator in a Parish but within a couple of months he was catapulted into another responsibility - Acting Editor of Ambassador Publications, the media arm of MSP, for 3 years before returning to the General Chapter of the Order then on to the Seminary as Dean of Students and Lecturer in Philosophy and Theology. By 1997 Father Livie had been sent to Dublin for postgraduate studies in Philosophy and Law

In 2015, Father Livie was sent to Hatfield where he became Chaplain to the University of Hertfordshire until 2017, while also Assistant Priest at St Peter's and Mary, Mother of God Churches. His determination during Covid has been to keep disruption to a minimum and continue as normal as possible. In 2021 he was given the post of Vice Regional Superior of the MSP, UK Region. He arrived here in his new Parish on Tuesday 26 October determined to keep an open door to all.

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair

Festive greetings to everyone with this December View from the Chair! It’s been a busy few weeks with the Parish Council. At the October meeting (after the last View was written), we declared a Climate Emergency. How will this impact Wendover? It means that as a Council, we will endeavour to reduce our carbon footprint, in all aspects of our operations. We have been using the most recycled and recyclable items when replacing and refurbishing our assets for some time, but we are undergoing an Eco-Audit to highlight other areas where we can improve. Streetlights have been converted to LEDs over the past few years which made a considerable reduction in the electricity used. It would be great if everyone tried to be more energy efficient. An easy way is to use Passive Infrared sensors (PIR) on external lighting so that it is only on when it needs to be. Not only does this reduce one’s energy bill, but it’s better for wildlife and looking at stars, as well. The Canal path has had a small temporary repair at the worst part, near Bankside, for which we are grateful as at least schoolchildren should not have to paddle to school! Other areas may also have been completed by the time you read this, but the main works are scheduled for Spring 2022. There were a number of Remembrance services in November – Rennie Grove re-dedicated a plaque from the Memorial Wood in the Community Orchard, a small ceremony was performed by Rev Sally Moring. It was a beautiful autumn day and a worthy place for it. St Mary’s Church held their annual service for those who had lost loved ones

in the past year and included planting a tree in memory of those who have died from Covid-19. The Remembrance Parade at the War Memorial on the Manor Waste was a welcome return to the usual wreath laying ceremony which had been missed last year.

20mph Consultation Update

The informal consultation period has ended. The results have been passed to our Speed and Noise Working Group, they will review and report back to the Parish Council with suggested recommendations on how to proceed.

Now it is time to re-group for the Christmas Community Awards festivities! At the moment, we are all set to have Wendover Community Awards aim to recognise the Christmas Celebration on the Manor Waste and celebrate people in our community who on Wednesday 1 December and I look forward to have made an outstanding contribution to the seeing many of you there. wellbeing and community spirit of the village and On behalf of Wendover Parish Council, I wish you the people who live here. all a happy, peaceful and healthy Christmas!
