See incredible Roman busts uncovered in HS2 archaeological dig at the Discover Bucks Museum Visitors to the Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury have the opportunity to see the incredibly rare Roman stone heads uncovered during HS2’s archaeological excavation of St Mary’s Church in Stoke Mandeville. Two of the heads, from the three busts found, are on loan to the museum until the end of October 2022.

They were discovered in the final stages of investigations by archaeologists from L-P Archaeology, working for HS2’s Enabling Works Contractor, Fusion JV, in October last year. Archaeologists were excavating a circular ditch around what is now thought to be the foundations of a Roman mausoleum when the three busts were revealed – one depicting a female adult, one a male adult and an additional head of a child. The two complete busts, the adult male and female, had been disfigured, with the heads removed from the torsos before they were thrown into the ditch. The remarkable discovery caused great excitement amongst the archaeologists on site.

Events After removing the remains of the Norman church, which had been demolished in 1966, they were astounded to find evidence of earlier use, which they now believe to have been a Roman mausoleum. The site also appears to have been used during Anglo-Saxon times, suggested by the presence of a Saxon coin in the ditch. Since being uncovered the Roman busts have undergone cleaning and initial conservation. HS2 Ltd is loaning two of the heads to the Discover Bucks Museum. More details are available on the Bucks Museum website here: https://www. discoverbucksmuseum.org/

Wendover Tea Dance

The first Wendover Tea Dance since the pandemic was held on Saturday 18 June at St Mary’s Church, Wendover. It was very well attended, with over 60 people enjoying themselves. Although the event was run by Wendover Dementia Support and Wendover Action Alliance, it was open to all the community, both young and old.

The next tea dance will be on Saturday 10 December, 2-4pm, so put the date in your diary….remember, there’s no obligation to dance – come and join a great social occasion!

Sandy and her 14 volunteers from SwingDanceMK led the dancing – ranging from country and 60’s music to disco dancing! Volunteers from WDS and the church provided tea and cakes, served in old-fashioned china crockery. This wonderful collection of crockery has been put together by members

New Singers Welcome!

Boiler installation

Calling All Singers…. Wendover Tutte at Garsington. Also, internationally acclaimed Nika Goric and Pumeza Choral Society needs YOU! Wendover Choral Society looks forward to welcoming new singers. The choir is enthusiastic and offers a warm welcome to new members. Covid restrictions have not dimmed the passion of Wendover Choral Society singers who have met and performed since autumn 2021, in nearnormal circumstances. It has been a great joy for everyone to be able to sing to a live audience once more. This December they will be performing Handel’s Messiah. What makes every concert so special are the performances of young Royal Academy of Music soloists who are all up-and-coming opera singers. Over the years, audiences have been blown away by many amazing voices. As a result, this modest mixed-ability choir is lifted out of the ordinary and the atmosphere is transformed. Recent singers include Camilla Harris, who performed last Christmas and is now singing in Così Fan

Matshikiza, a Decca soloist, described as ‘one of today’s most exciting new operatic voices’, sang here, as did Christina Gansch, in 2014. A winner of the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Competition, she now sings with San Francisco Opera. The choir is proud of its role in supporting such talented musicians.

Bathroom installation Power flushing Servicing & Gas Safety Certificates

Underfloor heating The Messiah, on 3 December, will also feature a professional Baroque ensemble specialist from the Royal Academy. It promises to be an exciting evening. If you would like Your friendly, local and reliable to be part of this, please come along to St heating company based in Wendover Mary’s Church on Thursday, 8 September at 7.45pm and try us out. Rehearsals begin with a warm-up at 7.45pm and last two hours, with an all-important break midway for refreshments and chat. No audition is required, although some musical knowledge is definitely very helpful. Enquiries to: wendoverchoral@gmail.com

Enabling works continuing

will be maintained throughout the project using During July the most visible sign of progress a new temporary road behind the remaining has been the demolition of the cottages in houses when Ellesborough Road is closed. Ellesborough Road. Following delays due to bats and nesting birds there is now a gap in the row of houses where the cutting for the “Green Tunnel” will be excavated. This will be about 18 metres deep (the height of four double decker buses…) to allow the pre-cast concrete tunnel to be installed before it is covered up and the ground level restored. Access to Coombe Hill and Butlers Cross Rocky Lane dump trucks and conveyor sections. Excavation is continuing further south with convoys of dump trucks now coming up from Great Missenden as far as Rocky Lane. Spoil also needs to be moved up to Wendover to build two embankments and cover the Green Tunnel. A bridge for the conveyor system is now in place over the A413 to avoid traffic congestion, and further conveyor sections have been installed west of the Chiltern Line to move the spoil about 600m to the Small Dean Lane work site.

Construction plans

Up to now most of Wendover has only been experiencing “enabling works”, which come before the reality of the civil engineering which is expected to start in earnest later this year. We’ve created a new section on our website whs2.org/construction that provides links to the documents covering the expected design of the railway, including the details that have above - Ellesborough Road demolition and EKFB’s been submitted to Bucks Council for approval. first green tunnel at Chipping Warden. Club Corner Aylesbury CTC Re-launch of Easy Riding rides. If you enjoy riding Aylesbury is a great place to cycle, surrounded by lovely countryside within easy reach. There are numerous cycle paths in and around the town centre and on new housing developments. Also there is the excellent Greenway cycle route which provides a safe, traffic free route from Aylesbury to Waddesdon Manor.

Wendover Bowls Club

Our splendid Captain, George Hunt, tries to keep us all amused and recently decided that we should have an afternoon of Crown Green bowls. Crown Green bowls is played on a domed green rather than a flat green. To play, the mat is placed and the Jack is sent in any direction for a minimum of 20 metres. Naturally this leads to conflict when there are several teams all doing their own thing. The day went well and I'm sure we will repeat it. The aforementioned George is having trouble getting full teams to play against other clubs, especially for away matches. Lots of people are happy to come to play each other, but reluctant to get involved in matches. Costs can make it expensive but car sharing can usually be arranged. Matches are fun and you learn so much more about tactics and so on and meet some lovely people. Never feel you are not good enough! Don Knight

In the Bucks Leagues, teams competed in 10 age groups as well as 2 girls teams. 3 senior teams play each weekend and the 1st XI are currently top of the Mid Bucks League Division 1. Junior training and matches have now ended except at U13, U17 & U19 and girls cricket, although some activities are planned for August. The Festival series will cover four fundraising areas – In Memory and Legacy Fundraising, Trust and Foundation Fundraising, Corporate Fundraising, and Community and Event Fundraising – each of which offer huge amounts of opportunity but can be daunting especially for small charities. The interactive training sessions are led by professionals who are experts in their chosen fundraising area, and are free for anyone (paid or unpaid) who raises money for a not-for-profit organisation in the county. River Thame Bird Atlas

Until now very little was known about the birdlife of the River Thame catchment. An area devoid of any exciting wildlife? "Absolutely not," says Nick Marriner (River Thame Conservation Trust Trustee and project manager), "the Atlas has proved just how important the River Thame is for birds. A very undervalued area for birds and I hope this project has helped raise the profile of the river."

Florence Nightingale Fundraising

In June, a group of Ridgeway Hikers were cheered on by family and friends as they crossed over the finish line after completing a four day hike along the Ridgeway in aid of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. Covering over 184,000 steps and burning off 13,900 calories, the walkers covered 80 miles over the four days across the historic paths of The Ridgeway. Not only was this a personal achievement for each walker, as a group they have raised almost £30,000 for the charity.

Aston Clinton Society goes litter picking

The newly-formed Aston Clinton Society organised a cleanup and litter-pick around Aston Clinton on 10 July when, despite the heat, more than 30 willing hands turned out. They collected a sizeable haul of litter which was, "both rewarding and disappointing in equal measures," says Ann, a Society member. "Litter-picks will be a regular activity of the Society as we try to create a tidier Aston Clinton, but we will also be hosting a number of fundraising events. The funds raised will help us to continue to make improvements to the village's overall appearance but also act as a means of bringing the community together so that there is a shared sense of pride and responsibility in where we live."

The study aimed to assess the feasibility of putting all seven buildings onto a district heat network powered by a groundsource heat pump. It also looked at what was needed in terms of insulation and energy efficiency measures as well as the potential for installing solar panels to reduce the cost of electricity sourced from the Grid.

Wendover u3a August Open Meeting

The u3a is a UK movement of people in their third age, no longer in full time work, who come together to learn, stay active and have fun in a friendly and informal environment. Previously known as the ‘University of the Third Age’, we are not a university at all, you need no qualifications to join us, nor will you be made to take exams! Wendover's u3a is a thriving organisation with over 400 members. We have over fifty different interest groups, ranging from Archaeology to Wine Appreciation and are always open to suggestions for new groups. We share knowledge and undertake educational, creative and leisure activities together. Along the way there is laughter, chatter, tea and coffee. Group members decide how often to meet up, but very often it suits them to get together monthly. Group meetings can take place in locally hired rooms, occasionally in someone's home, sometimes outdoors (walking for

MasterClass 11+ Learning for Results

example) or perhaps a lunch venue. Members can also take part in regular trips and outings. Recent organised trips have been to Aylesbury theatre, Hidcote Manor, Bletchley Park and Cumbria. Each month we hold our Main Meeting in St. Mary's Church, open to all Wendover u3a members. Usually a speaker comes to give us a presentation. Recent ones have included ‘The Chiltern Hills Landscape’, ‘A Diplomat’s Recollections of Soviet Russia’ and ‘The Falklands Conflict’. However our next Main Meeting is different, as it's an 'open' meeting. There will not be a speaker but there will be a couple of short presentations and a number of group displays. We would like to welcome non-members to come and meet us and see if they might like to join us. If you're interested please come along to St Mary's Church on Wednesday 3 August at 10am and see what we have to offer! https://u3asites.org.uk/wendover/welcome

Formal Reception

Wednesday 12 July RAF Halton’s Station Commander, Group Captain Startup, hosted the Annual Formal Reception at Halton House Officers’ Mess for the first time in over 2 years. Guests from the local and wider community attended the event and were welcomed with a reception, flypast and Sunset Ceremony.

Local Face: Jane Brooks BEM Jane moved to Aylesbury at the age of 6, attending Bedgrove Infants and Junior Schools and then Aylesbury High School. As a teenager she spent a lot of time in Wendover with her friends, enjoying the youth club at the John Colet and the regular discos at the Memorial Hall. Leaving school after A levels, she started work in the Cytology department, a branch of pathology, at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where she became qualified as a biomedical scientist. The work mainly involved the screening of cervical smears but also the preparation and examination of diagnostic cytology samples. In 2011, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer and, following her diagnosis and treatment, decided to leave the hospital and re-train as a holistic therapist. She set up her own business working from home and ran the business successfully until she decided to retire in March 2022 in order to support her elderly parents and to spend more time with

Wendover Community Car celebrates the car today. I just want to say 25 Years of Service It was 25 years ago that a group of community activists decided that Wendover needed to have locally based transport to help those members of the community who were less physically able to travel. The plan was for them to use a car based in Wendover and adapted for their needs so that they could live as normal a life as possible. That vision from 25 years ago has stood the test of time and the community car is still helping lots of people to get about. The car takes folk to Aylesbury for shopping, to social events and to church events, such as Services and Christenings; the list is endless.

Roy Coates, the acting Chair of the Management Committee, says “I am in awe of the foresight to those who saw the need for a community car and turned it into reality. It is amazing how many dedicated volunteers in Wendover and surrounding areas have made the community car such a success. Many have made their contribution and retired; others are still supporting the car today. So many people have used the car over the years and been grateful that it is there. This photo demonstrates how folk continue to use

It is really very simple to use the service. We have a co-ordinator called Joanne who arranges journeys – just call on 01296 317769 - and she will book in the time and date for the journey together with the return. The car will come to your home to pick you up, find a convenient place to drop you off at your destination and then pick you up later and return you to your home. It’s a great local service. Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair

If dangerous or life threatening, please call 999.

At the moment, the sun is shining and another beautiful day is forecast, so here is the Summer! The July WPC meeting was held at the MS Centre in Princess Mary Gate, and it was good to see a number of PMG residents taking part in the public participation section.

It is important that incidents are reported in order for our local police to build a picture of what is happening in our local area and use their available manpower accordingly.

Annual Quiz

Wendover Parish Council are organising the popular Annual Quiz again this year and are looking for teams of 3 to enter. The quiz is free of charge and will be held at the Wendover Bowls Club at 7.30 pm on Thursday evenings over 7 weeks in October and November. You will not be required to attend every quiz evening, just on the evenings your team is scheduled to play, and of course, it all depends on how many rounds your team makes it through!

The Council has a few initiatives still in progress at time of writing: the Parking review statutory consultation and the new Haddington play park (formerly known as the Helicopter Park). The Parking review date is not confirmed yet but should be running by the end of July. Every resident in Wendover is eligible to comment on any aspect and we will look at the results in the Autumn. Please note that any other roads cannot be added at this late stage in this consultation.

Not only is this event great fun to take part in and watch, but it is also a good opportunity to meet other local people. For more information or to download an application form please visit https://www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/annual-quiz. Submissions close on 1 September 2022.

The Haddington Park planning application has been posted on the BC planning portal (22/01987/ APP) with no decision by Bucks Council at time of writing. Again, if it is still live on the portal, please take a look at the plans and make a comment. The repair of the canal path is holding up well, with new vegetation on the edge helping to support the structure, but the complete refurbishment is still with the Canal and River Trust for scheduling.

Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 2 August, 7.30pm St Anne's Hall Aylesbury Road HP22 6JG Information about upcoming meetings:

Bucks Council has a new Town and Parish Charter www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/2022-23-agendas which will also be published shortly, which details the responsibilities of the various authorities, Anti-Social Behaviour Unitary, Town and Parish. Wendover Parish Council would like to remind residents the importance of reporting incidents That’s all for now and I do hope you have a great of vandalism, noise nuisances and anti-social holiday season, enjoy! behaviour immediately to Thames Valley Police Sheila Bulpett on 101, online through their website https:// www.thamesvalley.police.uk or by emailing Wendover Produce Market WendoverNHPT@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk.
