Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 6th October the featured film at the Dingle Film Club will be Ricki And The Flash . Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep goes electric as a hardrocking singer/guitarist - for Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme in the uplifting comedy Ricki and the Flash. In a film loaded with music and live performance, Streep stars as Ricki, a guitar heroine who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom, but is now returning home to make things right with her family. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, who plays her fictional daughter; Rick Springfield, who takes on the role of a Flash member in love with Ricki; and Kevin Kline, who portrays Ricki’s long-suffering ex-husband The following Tuesday on October 13th the feature will be “Slow West”. Starring Michael Fassbender this action western is the directorial debut of John McClean who has crafted an admirable atmospheric film which is by turns touching, surreal and shocking. Set at the end of the nineteenth century, 16-year-old Jay Cavendish journeys across the American frontier in search of the woman he loves. He is joined by Silas (Fassbender), a mysterious traveler, and hotly pursued by an outlaw along the way. 4 West Kerry Live

Gregorian Choir to visit Dingle The Choir- Schola Gregoriana of Mary-at-Sea will make a trip to Ireland from October 8 – 14. The schola will visit the Dingle region and give some concerts in which the Gregorian chants in honour of Saint Jerome will be performed. In this way the Schola brings this Irish monk home after some 1165 years.

The Choir

In 2006 the conductor at that time, Cees de Haas, started a Gregorian Choir (Schola Gregoriana) within the choir in order to revive the Gregorian chant. Nowadays this Schola consists of eight men and seven women and is led by the versatile young conductor Rens Tienstra (27) who is a specialist in Gregorian music

According to tradition Jerome – Hiëronymus, or in Dutch ‘Jeroen’ – was born in Ireland around 800, as the only son of a distinguished nobleman. The story goes that as a young man Jerome decided to renounce wealth and power and to become a man of the cloth. In the company of fellow monks he crossed the North Sea with the intention of spreading Christianity on the continent. Not an easy task, because the vast majority of the Frisians adhered to Germanic religions. At first Jerome had no fixed residence, but in 851 he settled as a pastor in a relatively peaceful dwelling on the slopes of the dunes, which is nowadays called ‘Noordwijk’. The little church that he founded was dedicated to St. Martin. Vikings: On August 16 of the year 856 the village of Noordwijk was the target of a Viking raid. St. Martin's church was burned. The spiritual leader of the Christians in the village, Jerome, was captured and tortured and thrown shackled into a dark hole. The next day the Viking leader demanded that Jerome should renounce his faith and pay homage to the Germanic gods. Jerome refused and was subsequently beheaded by the sword. After the Vikings had left, the villagers who had survived the massacre emerged from their hiding places. The body of Jerome was buried in a nearby forest and although the grave was marked with stones in time it was forgotten.

A Woven Silence: Memory, History and Remembrance in conversation with Helen Ní Shé of Ráidío na Gaeltachta/agus í i mbun comhrá le Helen Ni Shé, Raidio na Gaeltachta How do we know that what we remember is the truth? Inspired by the story of her relative Marion Stokes, one of three women who raised the tricolour over Enniscorthy in Easter Week 1916, Felicity Hayes-McCoy explores the consequences for all of us when memories are manipulated or obliterated, intentionally or by chance. In the power struggle after the Easter Rising the ideals for which Marion and her companions fought were eroded, resulting in an Ireland marked by chauvinism, isolationism and secrecy. By mapping her own family stories onto the history of the State, Felicity examines how Irish life today has been affected by the censorship and mixed messages of the past. Absorbing, entertaining and touching, her story moves from Washerwoman’s Hill in Dublin to London and back again, spans two world wars, a revolution, a civil war and the development of a republic, and culminates in Ireland’s 2015 same-sex marriage referendum. Louis Murchan

A QUICK GUIDE TO THE REGULATION OF LOBBYING ACT 2015 (I): The Regulation of Lobbying legislation is designed to provide information to the public about who is lobbying whom about what. With many farmers awaiting payment for their ANC, and pending payment for their Basic Payment Scheme, many will experience difficulties in their applications, be it ineligible areas, dual claims, over claims or just plain bureaucracy. As a result, many will resort to contacting their local public representative, to try to have these complications sorted out. BUT, if you do this, are you lobbying, and what are the consequences of doing so. Lobbying isn’t just carried out by large corporations, property developers or banking institutions. If you are asking your local TD or county councillor to look into your lack of payments, etc, you may be the dame as Mr Big! If you are lobbying then you must register on this website and make a return every four months. Take our Three Step Test to see if you are lobbying. In March 2015, the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015 was signed into law by the President. The Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015 (the Act) is designed to provide information to the public about: • Who is lobbying • On whose behalf lobbying is being carried out • The issues involved in the lobbying • The intended result of the lobbying • Who is being lobbied. Lobbying is an essential part of the democratic process. It enables or facilitates citizens and organisations to make their views on public policy and public services known to politicians and public servants. The Act does not aim to prevent or inhibit lobbying. It does aim to make the process more transparent. The Act aims to do this by providing for: • The establishment and maintenance of a publicly accessible register of lobbying • The Standards in Public Office Commission (The Standards Commission) to be the regulator of lobbying • Obligations on lobbyists to register and to provide information regularly about their lobbying activities, including, in the case of professional lobbyists, information about their clients • A code of conduct on the carrying-on of lobbying activities • The introduction of a “cooling-off” period during which lobbying activity may not be carried out by some former officials. If you are involved in lobbying, you may need to: • Register on the Register of Lobbying website which is maintained by Standards Commission: www.lobbying.ie • Provide information to the Standards Commission about your lobbying activities three times a year. There will be no cost to register as a lobbyist. Members of the public can view and search the register free of charge. So, the questions are: 1. Are you one of the following? • An employer with more than 10 employees where the communications are made on your behalf • A representative body with at least one employee communicating on behalf of its members and the communication is made by a paid employee or office holder of the body • An advocacy body with at least one employee that exists primarily to take up particular issues and a paid employee or office holder of the body is communicating on such issues • A professional lobbyist paid to communicate on behalf of client who fits into one of the previous categories • Any person communicating about the development or zoning of land 2. Are you communicating about a relevant matter?

A relevant matter is one which relates to:

• The initiation, development or modification of any public policy or of any public programme • The preparation or amendment of any law 12 West Kerry Live

• other than the implementation of any such policy, programme, enactment or award or any matter of a technical nature only. There are excepted and exempted communications. You can read about them here. 3. Are you communicating either directly or indirectly with a Designated Public Official?Yes or No? If you answered YES to all three questions then you are most likely lobbying. SHEEP NOTES: With the breeding season in full swing this is the time to make some decisions regarding your ram. You can go for a terminal ram or maternal and this decision really depends on your system. If you are breeding your own replacements then you should be considering a maternal. The main breeds to consider here are Belclare, Lleyn or a Bluefaced/Border Leicesters. These breeds have the ability to produce a high weaning rate of up to 1.8 lambs per ewe. Try to target breeding a maternal ram to the number of ewes to produce enough replacements for your farm; this will vary from farm to farm depending on the situation on each farm. Is the farm expanding in numbers? Are there a number of ewes that are not productive enough? Always breed your replacements first and once you are satisfied that you have tipped enough ewes to produce your replacements then let out your terminal rams. The main breeds here are Suffolk, Charollais, Texel, Vendeen and Beltex. These rams will produce a lamb that is fast growing and will reach slaughter weight at an earlier age and have a higher quality carcass. Once you have you’re breeding plan in place it’s time to check your ram ahead of the breeding season (communally known as the ram NCT) and check the five main areas. Timing – carry out the check 10 weeks before the breeding season starts. Teeth:- Avoid breeding with rams that have overshot or undershot jaws. Incisors should close firmly on dental pad Rams may not put on condition if teeth are lost or long and thin Torso:- Body condition score should be 3.5 to 4. Check eyes for infection or defects and check for fighting injuries, ulcers and lesions Toes:- Check for foot rot, scald and infections, use footbath to avoid further problems and check joints for arthritis Testicles:- Should be firm, not soft or hard and free from lumps. Improve testicle size and condition by feeding a good quality protein for 6 to 8 weeks. The testicles should move freely in the scrotum, any restrictions may indicate infection or injury . The scrotum should be heavy and soft and needs to be clean with no sign of injury or infection SCANNING: With the breeding season long behind us now get your cows scanned to see where you stand for next year. Scanning allows you to make decisions early about what you are going to do with the empty cows. Dry off and sell in November time when there is usually a good trade for fat cows or milk them on through the winter (questionable with a low milk price). The price of scanning is not expensive and should be done on every farm BORD BIA:There are still a large number of Board Bia inspections being done in the county every week. The fail rate is getting worse and there seems to be the same problems coming up every time. The animal remedies records are a problem every time and are the most important section in the audit. This is section 3 in the board bia book and I would advise everyone to take a good look at this section before your audit. Another problem that is coming up on nearly every audit (although nobody is failing on it) is the bait management on the farm. The guideline state that one of the following needs to be in place. Vermin can be controlled by a farm cat. If this is the case then this cat will be treated the same as a farm dog and will need to be regularly wormed and this needs to be recorded with the animal remedies usage records. Bait points throughout the farm. These need to be marked on a farm sketch and a record of when they are checked needs to be recorded. The points themselves need to be secure and designed in a way that only allow vermin to have access to the bait. Apart from controlling vermin for the Board Bia audit this is the time of year to be thinking of keeping them under control. Use good quality bait and points and make sure that they do not get into your sheds. Its alot easier to keep them out than it is to get them out when they are in. Killorglin Tidy Towns Orna Eccles First let us congratulate Listowel on their well deserved win for the best small town categorie. To be fair every town and village that put in a submission needs to be commended for their wonderful work all across the land. It must be said that today is a very proud day for Killorglin Tidy Towns with the outstanding increase of 14 points in this years National Tidy Towns Competition 2015. We have gone from 269 to 283 in total marks. What a remarkable achievement we are heading for the bronze or maybe even the gold with our 3 year plan. This certainly has been a community effort all around. winning the green flag earlier this year gave us a significant boost of 6 points in the Sustainable Waste and Resource Management Section alone. The adjudicators mentions that they liked the idea we mentioned the different community organisa-

tions that helped by name. It was wonderful to get the businesses and schools on board too. I will certainly post the full report over the coming week. The concluding remarks from the judges. The professional manner of your submission suggested that this is an active group working hard on the issues that face the residents and visitors to the town. The visit did not find the Tidy Towns people wanting. Wonderful work is being done in Killorglin, much of it behind the scenes but much of it apparent as one rambles about. Signs on there is the hustle and bustle of activity all over the town, akin to the hustle and bustle of yester year mentioned at the pump. Ait bhrea chonaithe is a balanced approach to entering the competition. We have now changed to Saturday mornings for the winter months. We meet by the monument in the Fair Field @ 10am till noon. Come along with whatever cleaning tools you have at home. Gloves, brushes, shovels, pickers, weed scrapers, and most importantly a good smile. Tell your friends and neighbours perhaps who are not on Facebook to come along. Continue to follow us on facebook for the latest and upcoming work being done in your area. Like and share to spread the good news. Any questions call Orna on 087 9871807. Slainte. Cill Orglan Abú !!

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Bhuaigh an bháisteach ar Fhoireann Sinsear Chiarraí ach thug sé seans do sna mionúir bhuacacha faoina ngaiscíoch. Déanaimid comhghairdeachas croí leo. Ní fada go mbeidh cuid acu ar na sinsir. Bhuaigh an bháisteach leis orainn sa ghairdín urnaí agus leag cóch gaoithe crann ann. Anois táimid ar ais ag cur bailchríche ar an obair ansin le cúnamh Dé. Idir an dá linn bhí go leor ar siúl laistigh. Bhí níos mó cuairteoir istigh ag fáil léas ar an dtaobh thall le cabhair na healaíne a bhfuil craobh an domhain buaite ag fuinneoga Harry Clarke, agus is gearr go mbeidh sin buaite ag Frescó Ella Yates. Beidh sí chugainn sara fada ag deisiú na díobhála a dhein an drochaimsir do cheann de na múrphictiúir sa halla. Sa drochaimsir chaitheamar díriú ar chúraimí leabhar agus foilseachán; ní chuireann SHU isteach poinn orainn mar bíonn siad ag déanamh a ngnó féin go slachtmhar gan cur isteach poinn ar na cuairteoirí. Is iontach na háiseanna hallaí agus IT atá againn. Shocraíomar Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad 2015, le pictiúr álainn an Phápa agus beirt oilithreach ó Chiarraí á bheannú aige sa Róimh ar Bhigil Naomh Éireann 2014 a fhoilsiú i Má Nuad. Bhí tábhacht ar leith leis an ócáid i Halla Pugin i Má Nuad. Bhí a lán d’fhoireann Dhámh an Léinn Cheiltigh i Láthair. Bhíos féin ag seanchas le huachtarán Chuallacht Choilm Cille an linne seo. Cheap sí go raibh an gradam sin agamsa fadó, ach dúrt léi ná raibh ach gur dóigh liom gur le Cuallacht Bhríde i dteach na sóisear is mó a bhí baint agam. I dteach na sinsear an uair sin b’iad an mic léinn is gníomhaí a bhí ag plé leis an Irisleabhar, agus ar feadh a lán blianta. Le mo linn ar an bhfoireann bhíodar páirteach in imeachtaí Léachtaí Choilm Cille freisin. Tá eagarthóireacht LCC anois ar láimh shabhálta faoi Roinn na Gaeilge in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad agus fós ceangal ag an gCuallacht le LCC.

www.meadowlandshotel.com fhoireann Mhá Nuad, i láthair freisin agus áthas uirthi bualadh le cuid dá mic léinn atá dulta chun cinn go maith ó shin. Bhí i láthair an saineolaí ar an sliocht mór graifneoirí Uí Longáin a bhfuil an cnuasach mór dá lámhscríbhinní i Leabharlann an Ruiséalaigh [M 1-114] faoi shúile dheilbh an Easpaig Uí Mhurchú dár scríobhadh iad. B’fhéidir go bhfeicfimís cléirigh Chorcaí ag baint feidhme as Brú na Gráige chun slacht a chur a gcuid Gaeilge agus deoch a ól as tobar an dúchais acu mar a rinne a lán de shagairt dheoisí Iarmhumhan sa sa Bhóthan Dubh agus sa Bhrú atá fós réidh le glacadh leo.

News from the Díseart The rain defeated our great senior Kerry Team and we all missed a classic match. As our manager admitted graciously the better team on the day won. We congratulate the minors and their manager on their wonderful display on the dry pitch. We expect to see some of them soon on the senior team. The weather interfered with our work on the Prayer Garden. It knocked down an old apple tree. The apples that could not be reached till then were soon eaten by humans and birds. We have the slates with names of sponsoring families to put in place after the next spell of dry weather; dear Lord give us a a few days of an Indian summer! In the rainy weather we had very many visitors to view our wonderful internal art work. Our SHU students enjoyed the benefit of our IT facilities without interfering very much with our visitors. We still have 8 semester students who were able to do their own thing. Other courses also continued or were renewed. We went off to Maynooth to launch its learned annual which included an outstanding lecture in English on the Ó Longáin scribal family; 114 manuscripts of theirs are preserved in the Russel Library in Maynooth College. It is hoped that the annual Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad will resume its close connection with the Cuallacht in Maynooth as a new editor is expected to replace Fr. Pádraig.

Theastaigh a chinntiú go mbeadh ceangal níos dlúithe ag an gCuallacht leis an Irisleabhar. Is dóigh liom gur tharla sin. Is é an Dr. Nollaig Ó Súilleabháin de dheoise Chorcaí agus Rois a sheol an tIrisleabhar rud a dhein le slacht. Bhí Ollamh na NuaGhaeilge i OÉD, a bhí seal maith ar

Eat the Beet for Superhealth! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Beetroot has languished long enough, crinkle-cut in a jar of pickle and is now becoming popular in food houses up and down the country. Green grocers and supermarkets keep a steady supply of this cheap, versatile root vegetable as it is fast becoming a tasty addition to the family menu. More exciting than its current surge in popularity is the growing interest in the health properties of the humble beetroot. Much of what we know about the beetroot has been passed on through the ages. Historically, beetroot was used to treat disorders of the blood, heart and liver. Interestingly, nature provides many clues of the goodness in plants through their colour, shape and texture . Beetroot, with its rich red colour and round shape resembles the internal organs and has been used for over 4000 years to treat many differing disorders of the heart, blood, liver and gallbladder. The randy Romans used beetroot juice as an aphrodisiac - nitrates in beetroot juice produce nitric oxide which helps to dilate the arteries, increase blood flow and lower blood pressure. All this makes for a great night in! In folk medicine if a man and woman eat from the same beet they’ll fall in love. In Africa beets are used as an antidote to cyanide poisoning - not so romantic in Africa! Today, modern science can confirm the numerous health claims by identifying and testing the unique constituents of the beet and their impact on our health. We now know that beetroot is good for heart health due to nitric oxide production, but also because of its rich nutrient content. Beetroot is widely used to treat hypertension, varicose veins and arthrosclerosis. Rich in minerals potassium, calcium, iron as well as vitamins A , C and B vitamins, betaine, betacarotene and bioflavonoids - beetroot can increase the uptake of oxygen in the blood by a whopping 400%, making a glass of beetroot juice a perfect tonic for the heart and circulatory system. Benefits to the liver and gallbladder can be attributed to the cleansing and alkalising action of beetroot. It stimulates liver cells, tonifies the blood and protects bile ducts. Beet juice combined with apple juice is an excellent remedy for gout, kidney and gallbladder problems. Eaten whole, the fibre in beets is useful to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), which is much a problem for the liver as it is for the heart. Acne, jaundice, hepatitis and constipation (symptoms of sluggish detoxification) may also benefit from this mighty vegetable. New on-going research is examining its anti-tumour and anti-cancer properties, in particular with cancers of the blood, bone marrow, liver and spleen. Due to its powerful cleansing and rejuvenating properties, for both the heart and the liver - no doubt the beet will come up trumps again! Beetroot can be eaten 1-2 times per week for a healthy person but more often if you want to use it therapeutically. Seek professional advice before taking large doses of beetroot juice or concentrated beetroot supplements, particularly if your are on any medication. Beetroot enjoys a long growing season from July through to January. When buying fresh beets, choose beets with their greens attached or at least 2” of green tops. The skin should be firm and smooth without any bruises or blemishes. Beet greens can be cooked like spinach or chard and similarly, are an excellent source of calcium, iron and vitamins A and C. They will keep fresh for 1-2 days in the fridge. The beet root will keep for up to 2 weeks in the fridge. Prepare fresh beets by rinsing them under cold water tap removing any visible dirt. Gently scrub with a brush if necessary but do not cut the skin or trim the root end as it will result in loss of colour and flavour leaving you with a dull, brown plate of mush. Smaller, younger beets can be grated raw adding extra nutrients, flavour and appealing colour to salads. Once cooked, the skin will slip off easily - wear gloves or use kitchen towel to avoid getting stubborn beet stains on your hands. Larger beets are better cooked by boiling in water or wrapped in foil and baked. For roasting or baking, beets are delicious with whole garlic cloves and woody herbs such as rosemary, thyme and bay leaf. Other ingredients that are scrumptious with beets include soured cream, creme fraiche, feta cheese, apples, nutmeg, raisins, cinnamon, onion, dill and vinegar. For flavour and nutrient content you can’t beat fresh beetroot but pre-cooked beetroot is also available to buy in shops and usually is vacuum packed. These can be a handy, time-saving alternative and although some of the vitamins may be lost - much of its minerals and fibre remain intact. Cooked beets make great soups and purées, can be used just as they are or added last minute to a tray of roast veggies. There are endless ways to use beetroot in your diet so don’t “beet” around the bush any longer - pick up a beetroot today and eat it! Timothy Flies The Flag At Tech Summit Timothy McGrath, a 2nd year student from Killorglin Community College, has just returned from the Liberty Global Tech Summit in Amsterdam after being one of only five students invited to represent Ireland at the event which was held in the massive Ziggo Dome, where U2 played to an audience of 18,000 on the weekend previous. Timothy entered the CoderDojo 'Coolest Projects' competition in the RDS in Dublin earlier this year and made a huge impact with the App 'Virtual Visual' that he developed with his friend & classmate Donal Brennan. 'Virtual Visual' helps the visually impaired navigate unfamiliar surroundings by using Near Field Technology (NFC) similar to that found on many of our our ATM cards now that allows us to pay for items under â‚Ź20 by simply touching our card off the payment machine. Liberty Global, the parent company of many household satellite & broadband suppliers across Europe and a stakeholder in many TV stations, hold an annual Tech Summit each year. This year they were very impressed with the CoderDojo network in Ireland and invited five students who were addressing social issues to showcase their talents and meet with their top coders in Amsterdam. This was a fantastic opportunity for Timothy and Liberty Global flew him and his family to the event and treated them like VIP's for the two day event.

"It was an honour to represent my school and my country at such a high profile corporate event. I learnt a lot from the coders and made good links for the future. There is a long road ahead of me to follow my dream of fully developing this but I’m ready to put in the hard work" said Timothy The school has had a very successful year at various local, national and now European events and competitions. This success has caught the imagination of many other students and at the moment there is a lot of work being done on the BT Young Scientist proposal forms.

County League Keel played Beale on Saturday Evening in Keel. Gary Sayers scored the opening point before Beale hit a purple patch. Tom Joy leveled before Barry O’Mahony scored a goal after the keel defense lost a high ball in the evening sun that hit the crossbar and landed in the Beale corner forwards hands. Keel responded well and scored the next four points, Gary Sayers 2, Barth Murphy and Kieran Foley. The match was evenly balanced and two points from both teams, two frees by Darragh Buckley for Beale and points from Gary Sayers and James Long, left it Keel 0-7 Beale 1-3 at half time. Beale flew out of the traps in the second half with four points in the first ten minutes, two Darragh Buckley frees, Daniel Ellis and a monster 45 from Ger O’Gorman. Another Gary Sayers point cut Beale’s lead to two points, but scores from Jeremy King and James McMahon extended it to four with ten minutes remaining. This ten minutes was littered with injuries but a Terry O’Sullivan point started the comeback for Keel. Gary Sayers kicked the last three points of the match to give both teams a share of the points. Photo: Evelin Peenar September saw another great night with old friends and new gathering at Patcheen's and raising their voices to the rafters. The county was well covered, with folk coming in from Dingle, Tralee and particularly from Annascaul and contributing a massive range of material. Country blues rubbed elbows with jazz standards and traditional songs rang out from every corner of the room. It was a pleasure to welcome members of the Dingle Folk Club and the Tralee Ukelele Class who further enriched the evening, Wherever you come from you can be assured of a welcome and a listening ear. We'll be getting together again on Thursday 15th October at 9pm at Patcheen's Bar. So, if you have a song to sing or just want an evening in a pleasant musical atmosphere, Annasacul is the place to be. It'a free and it's fun.

Dingle Tidy Towns News.

will be Exhibiting

Well the adjudicators report on the Supervalue National Tidy Towns Competition has finally arrived and we received 4 extra points this year bring our total to 279 out of a possible 450 marks. Thankfully it is a more detailed report than in previous years and highlights some of the areas needing urgent attention if our town is to strive to meet even the minimum standard in this very competitive annual assessment. I will not even attempt to colour our readers interpretation of the report but ask you all to take time to study same which is available at www.tidytowns.ie and click on Reports where the full script is available. One aspect I will highlight though is that it is most disappointing to note that it appears that no other area in the Peninsula got around to entering the Competition this year. For an area that is now so dependant on Tourism we hope that a few areas will get their act together for 2016 and beyond. Our Work Evenings will commence at 6.30p.m each Tuesday for the next few weeks as there are still a lot of areas needing attention. The cigarette buts outside the licensed premises in most streets have been highlighted by many tourists this year as a huge disappointment for such a tourist town. Maybe we should publish a list as other towns have done in a name and shame exercise!!! When we have all got around to reading the aforementioned adjudicators report we intend to hold a public meeting to get a more vibrant committee working on Dingles future Tidy Towns Plans. It is our firm view that we cannot change the past but we can certainly do better in the years ahead with greater commitment and involvement from more people. So lets hear your views in the next few weeks!!! Bigi Linn!!!

Nature’s Knowledge

Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Golden Rod; Solidago virgaurea Parts Used; Dried Aerial Parts Family; Asteraceae Thankfully there are still a number of herbs we can gather before the harvesting season is over, for example eyebright, yarrow and golden rod, the latter with its golden yellow flowers, which form a cluster at the tip of the stems. The plant continues to flower during the month of September growing happily alongside its much slighted neighbour ragwort. Be careful not to confuse the two though most of us here in Corcha Dhuibhne recognise this latter plant, which is poisonous to cattle and is listed under the Noxious Weeds Act 1936. Golden rod is different in appearance to ragwort and as a general (though not always foolproof) rule of thumb pay particular attention to the leaves of plants when harvesting as you can often identify and differentiate between similar looking plants this way. The leaves of the ragwort are relatively large and deeply cut into frilly lobes whereas golden rod leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and arranged alternately along the stem. Another very important rule of thumb when harvesting is, if in doubt leave it out! There are many types of goldenrod but all species of goldenrod are safe and beneficial and can be used to help support us through the winter. Two areas benefit the most from this herb and golden rod is one of the first herbs to be considered for respiratory conditions such as catarrh, sinusitis and rhinitis whether acute or chronic. Taking golden rod together with elderberry will help to ward of colds and flu type symptoms helping to boost the immune system and relieve upper respiratory catarrh. Elderberry, another autumn bounty has been

proven to protect against a number of strains of the flu virus and is also very effective for upper respiratory catarrh. Golden rod’s other primary use is for the urinary system and will help to strengthen and nourish the kidneys generally when used long-term, however as mentioned in previous articles do take a break every six weeks when taking any herb therapeutically. The herb can be used to treat urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis and similar conditions of this system. The herb also has a reputation for reducing mass in kidney stones, for rheumatic and arthritic conditions and for clearing skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. Home grown remedies can be very effective as every plant is unique in its own environment and its therapeutic effects are best suited for the conditions and people of the region. Golden rod is a valuable remedy primarily for the urinary and respiratory systems with its antiinflammatory, diuretic and antiseptic properties. More generally the herb’s strong diuretic effect can support other chronic conditions, such as, skin conditions, oedema, gout and arthritis. It is important to drink lots of fluids, for example, up to 1 and a half litres daily especially when attempting to clear the body of toxins. Preparation; infusion or tincture form. Dosage: infusion 6-12 g Tincture 2-4mls Safety considerations: May cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to plants in the Asteracea family. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted by email at: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109

Greta's Herbs Greta McCarthy O’ Brien

the greenhouses of our own Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. Like all Botanic Gardens, it represents various sectors of plant-life. The entrance was regal and behind the high walls lay a picturesque cactus garden, exhibiting mature specimens - one such being the Opuntia whose ‘Prickly Pear’ fruits I ate later for the first time in a local Italian kitchen. I think the texture and taste is like watermelon. It is an extremely pretty looking fruit revealing various colours of red, yellow and green when peeled. Sadly the greenhouses were neglected and the orchids were not in flower. The highlight for me was the fern garden. It was quite vast and beautifully designed. Massive ‘Staghorn ferns’ were mounted on tree trunks. These ferns are shaped like huge deer antlers and don't require any soil as they derive all the nutrients they require from the atmosphere. Like orchids they grow on the tops of trees in the tropical rain forests. They can only be grown inside in Ireland’s Botanic Gardens so it was a treat for me to see them displayed in such a natural environment.

An Italian Adventure The entrance through Porta Marina at Pompeii’s ancient ruins is lined by a magnificent border of trailing rosemary and, further in, other terraced areas are covered with this same herb. No doubt the Romans enjoyed flavouring their foccacia (flat bread) with it! Cypress, palm and pine lend an air of splendour to what once was a vibrant civilisation. Vesuvius stands threateningly in the background: intense heat radiates from the gigantic stone structures of this 66 hectacre site and as I lingered among the encased ghosts of this buried city, I could almost hear whispers of the untold stories of the dead. It was an intriguing yet gruelling experience and it felt more like a pilgrimage than a visitor’s paradise. My next stop to Orto Botanic Gardens in Naples was a more uplifting experience. Such a visit is always a re-learning curve for me having studied many of the tropical plants in

The herb garden was dismal with very sick looking examples of my favourite group of plants. I was disappointed not to see hedges of bush basil and miles of lavender! The most striking plant was a very tall tree with an unusual spiny trunk. It had exquisite lily type flowers in soft shades of lemon and pink. The flowers were fading and their petals flittered to the ground like confetti! It was really beautiful! I encountered it again in the breath-taking ‘La Mortella’ garden (which deserves a later full article) and identified it as Chorisia spinosa commonly called 'Silk Floss Tree' as it's fruits produce a silky material which is used in pillow making. I did not experience the arena of herb growing in Italy that I expected, probably because I was not in a rural area. In many ways I

• • • • • • • • • •

feel quite pleased with my own modest production of local herbs in Ireland. To see Bay and Greek oregano survive and thrive in this alien, coastal location gives me great satisfaction. It makes me believe many more things are achievable! On my hunt for something new I spotted an interesting pack of dried herbs and mushrooms called 'Pasta alla Boscaiola'. My Italian friend kindly translated it as 'A traditional dish for people who lived near the forest where they could gather fungi'. I will look forward to experimenting with these flavours along with my little pots of salted capers. I can at least enjoy an authentic Italian touch this winter! No seeds or cuttings this time!"

Photo by Jon Wright Photography Jimmy Deenihan TD visited the facilities at Dingle Marina Centre last weekend ahead of essential enhancement of it’s facilities. The Centre was conceived when the committees of the local marine activity clubs came together and formed a company limited by guarantee in order to create a centre that could facilitate the development of their activities in the newly developed Dingle Harbour. Opened in 1999 the Centre provides facilities for Dingle Sailing Club, Dingle Marina, Dingle Rowing Club, Sub Aqua training and diving, a Chandlery Office which provides a base for Eco Tour operators, angling vessels and harbour tours, as well as a high class seafood restaurant. The meeting room in the centre is used to host local events including Dingle marathon and cycling events. It is used for Rugby club and Cycling club meetings and has hosted art exhibitions during local festivals. There are over twenty five staff employed in the centre in the summer months. Dingle Marina Centre is is a hub of sporting, social and community activity. A recent consultants report was commissioned by the centre to identify the it’s future needs and to develop wider participation in marine sports. It reported that there is a need to carry out essential modifications of the toilet, showering and changing areas to ensure full compliance with sporting facility child protection requirements. A new design was commissioned which meets these requirements and grant aid was provided to allow these facilities to be modified and made fit for purpose. It’s another step forward in the ever evolving story of this waterside success story.

News from Camphill Community Dingle Christoph Jensen Also Camphill Community Dingle will be part of the Food Festival this week-end with a small presentation on Milk and Cows (see the programme). Our demonstration can be visited in Orchard Lane next to Deirdre’s at 12:30h on Sunday. You might well try your hand on making your own yoghurt, cottage cheese, labaneh or even cheese and butter after visiting the demonstration. Should you be interested to get deeper into the subject we can arrange a follow-up on our farm at Doonsheane at a convenient time. And at The Old Coach-house we exhibit two of our own cheeses, where you are invited to guess the amount of milk needed to produce them … there are three prizes to be won. At the time of writing we are preparing for our Michaelmas and Harvest festival. We will be preparing a harvest-altar and have a common meal in the evening … It was on that day last year that we celebrated our 10th birthday. As the summer is bidding fare-well with a few sunny days, Michaelmas prepares us to face our own weaknesses with courage and confidence, meeting the oncoming winter-months by kindling our own inner light and warmth. With Betsie well on her way on the Camino, Tonnie has stepped into the weavery in her absence. Last weekend we received a used loom from a kind donor on the Dingle peninsula, for which we are tremendously grateful. You can be sure it is being put to good use. I wished I could tell you more regards our houses in Cois Chnoic, but it seems that the last hurdles to take possession have been overcome … watch this space.

Do you have an idea that might qualify for RDP (LEADER) Funding? If you have a business idea or are interested in expanding an existing business, you may be able to seek grant funding through the new round of Rural Development (LEADER) Programme funding. South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) is hosting a series of one to one information meetings over the coming week to provide details of the new programme to interested individuals. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that the partnership is currently trying to promote the new programme in the region in advance of it being officially launched early next year. “These meetings give us the chance to speak with business owners or those who have business ideas so that they can see if their plans can be funded under the new programme” he said. “In addition, we would welcome those involved in the tourism sectors or farmers with fixed assets that could be used for non-agricultural activities to come in and speak with us so they can be prepared to apply when the programme opens” Noel said. The information meetings are by appointment only and can be booked through calling SKDP on 066 9472724. Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Notes Deirdre O’ Sullivan Senior County Championship: Hard luck to Mike Hickey and his panel of players who gave a superb display of football in Strand Road on Sunday against Kerins O Rahilly’s. Some unfortunate injuries early in the game along with a few coloured cards -eventually made a victory very difficult. Some excellent goalkeeping from Cormac Leane along with staunch defence by our back lines helped suppress the Rahilly forwards for a while. Midfield did their part also -despite the presence of 2 senior Kerry players -and our forwards showed great skill both from freesCathal converted 4 frees and kicked 2 from play with Jerome, Jack, Pa and Jonathan scoring 1 each from play. A terrific goal from Jonathan –at a crucial time -brought us to within one point-1:06 to 10 points at half time.

With Ted Creedon The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin, in 1985. PROFILE: Jackie the Lighthouse Jackie O’Sullivan lives alone in a modest, tidy house on Greys Lane. Now retired after almost fifty years in the hardware business, Jackie bears the unique distinction of having been born in Dingle Lighthouse. In true Kerry tradition he has been known as ‘Jackie the Lightouse’ for most of his 73 years.

Micilín Muc is Dingle’s newest food venture making black and white puddings, sausages and rashers the traditional way at a small facility based in Dingle, catering for both the retail and catering market. Our products are available in all local shops and butchers. We can produce sausages and puddings to suit your requirements, using various herb and spice combinations, or meat content. We only use Irish pork, beef and lamb in all of our product range. Our pork sausages are made only from pork belly and shoulder with a minimum of 80% meat content. Our dry cured back and streaky rashers are made from 96% fresh pork loin and belly, and are cured using sea salt. Our black pudding is made using fresh beef blood while our white pudding includes freshly chopped onions, pearl barley, oatmeal, fresh pork and dry cured bacon and has a subtle peppery kick. Our pork sausage range is quite varied and includes a basic pork sausage with a little kick of mustard; Cumberland; leek and black pepper; chilli and coriander; red wine parsley and garlic; and sage and black pepper. We are very excited that we have reached the Blas na hÉireann award finals for our Cumberland sausage and white pudding. We thank you whole-heartedly for your on-going custom and look forward to welcoming you to come and taste a special recipe black pudding as part of the Dingle Food Festival taste trail at Centra on Main Street. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil le siopadóirí agus ollmharagaí timpeall na leithinise as ár d’táirge a chur ar fáil, agus go h’áraithe do mhuintir na háite as a gcuid tacaíocht.

The lighthouse was completed i 1887 at a cost of £589 - this figure was 25% below the estimated cost of construction which must stand as some sort of record. Jackie’s great granduncle, Michael Long, was the first keeper and Jackie’s grandfather, John, who was a seaman with a Master’s ticket, took over as keeper around the end of the nineteenth century. Grandfather John and family had been based in Cork before moving to Dingle. Jackie’s father, Pádraig, had attended school in the city’s North Mon. As well as keeping the light, both Jackie’s father and grandfather were sailmakers and made many a sail, for local fishing vessels, in the lighthouse. Jackie’s mother was Elizabeth Collins from Roscarbery in County Cork and was a nurse in Dingle Hospital. Jackie was born, the first of seven children, in the lighthouse, on July 11, 1912. He attended school in the local CBS and spent much of his youth fishing and boating. He liked football and dancing and he and his pals often cycled to Annascaul and other places on a Sunday afternoon. ‘We had no money but we had great fun’ he recalls. However, it wasn’t all fun in the lighthouse. ‘Living there in winter was hell and such a life was only fit for a single man’ he told the Dingle Echo. The most terrifying experience for him and his family was at 4 a.m. on December 12, 1942 when the lighthouse was struck by a tidal wave. According to Jackie, solid water hit the light tower and smashed the glass. Suddenly, their home was flooded but not damaged. The family fled to higher ground, frightened but excited. When dawn came, several hours later, they could see that Dingle Bay was a boiling maelstrom. ‘ It was an incredible sight - I just couldn’t describe it’ Jackie said. All the field fences and walls, from the lighthouse to Lough, were levelled, such was the force of successive waves of water through the harbour entrance. Fishing boats were damaged and even Milltown Bridge was seriously damaged as was the bathing shelter at Slaudeen. The lighthouse was out of commission for three months while they waited for special rounded glass to come from Birmingham which was delayed due to the war. When he was eighteen, Jackie went to work in Murdochs hardware on Green Street. That was in 1930 and twenty years later he married Mary Scanlon of Emlough, Lispole, and they moved into the house on Greys Lane. Now retired from Fitzgerald’s Hardware and a widower Jackie likes to go lobster fishing but finds it too much like hard work. He travels quite a bit - to see his sisters in England and his daughter, Mary Anita Walsh, who is married to a teacher in Castleisland. His ambition is to compile a family tree and he has begun to do this with the aid of a prepared chart and church records. Go neirí leis!

Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School It is that time of year again when we get to welcome so many visitors to the peninsula to celebrate food and food experiences at the Dingle Food Festival. Now in it’s ninth year, it has become one of Ireland’s most exciting food festivals and goes from strength to strength each year. It is one of the many reasons why the Dingle region has become a destination where people will travel to experience the local food offerings. It is always so satisfying to hear people from all over the world say that they have had such a fabulous time here and have particularly enjoyed the food. The Dingle Food Festival continues to be run by a voluntary committee and the goodwill of local businesses and local people, which in itself is a huge achievement. We are fortunate that we have so many places where we can enjoy good food produced by a variety of passionate and driven people who believe in great food on the peninsula. When you consider the full list of products available here; it is astonishing: fish, shellfish, meat and meat products, vegetables, honey, dairy, chocolates, ice cream, relishes, breads and the list goes on and hopefully will keep growing. When I sat down to write this article I was thinking it would be great to share a recipe that would remind everyone of the wonderful produce we have but my list just kept getting longer! I was thinking of some nice hake, served with Maharees’ carrots and seaweed cream; or Dingle Peninsula lamb, turnip and thyme; or Brown crab with a garden salad; or Beetroot with Dingle Farmhouse cheese and Brandon honey; or a custard tart made with local milk and eggs, served with Murphy’s Salt Ice cream … but I have settled for this recipe in which I use Micilín Muc white pudding – the peninsula’s newest food producer making sausages, rashers and puddings. Ingredients:

Meanwhile, make the dressing by mixing the thyme, vinegar, oil, lemon juice and salt & pepper together. Taste and season accordingly. Now for the fish, season well with salt & pepper. Heat a pan and allow it to get hot. Once hot, add some oil and straight away add in the fish. Allow it to brown well on all sides then place in an oven at 180ºC for 10 minutes. Check the fish by squeezing it in the centre and once it’s firm with a little spring take it out of the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. At this stage you can add the white pudding alongside the fish to warm it (remember white and black pudding is already cooked and is best served warmed) To serve, start by slicing the monkfish. Put some carrots in the centre of the plate, place the white pudding on top of the carrots and place the sliced monkfish on top. Finally drizzle some of the dressing over the fish. Enjoy!!!

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Minority languages: The current situation and challenges Have you ever heard about the world’s minority languages? Do you know that many languages worldwide are at risk of extinction? Currently, there are approximately 6,500 languages spoken in the world. It is almost incredible that 50% of these languages are spoken within the boundaries of eight countries, including- Australia, Mexico, India, Brazil and Cameroon. I know that we get tired hearing statistics trotted out all the time; but the first time I heard this fact, I remember I was really shocked. You would associate Australia solely with English and Brazil only with Portuguese. But what about the hundreds of other languages that are spoken in these countries? These are minority or regional languages! A minority or regional language is a living language spoken in daily communication by certain communities; but more often than not, it lacks official recognition and status. Often, people are not allowed to use it outside the family to conduct their business with state and commercial organisations. In Europe alone, there are about 60 languages in this bracket. One might imagine from the term “minority” that only a handful of people or minority groups speak these languages, but that is not the case! There are over five million people in Spain, in Andorra, in the Balearic Islands and in Sardinia who speak Catalan, one of the minority or regional languages of Europe! The Catalans are doing their best to secure status and rights for the language! But having said that, many other languages in Europe and across the globe are at risk of becoming extinct and being swallowed up by strong world languages like English! This is happening because the young generation does not speak them. Children and teenagers don’t bother with them. These languages would be spoken naturally by their parents but their children do not acquire and use them!

a bhaint amach dóibh féin Ach, é sin ráite, tá go leor de na teangacha eile sin san Eoraip agus ar fud na cruinne i mbaol a mbasctha agus iad á n-alpadh siar ag mórtheangacha tréana, domhanda ar nós an Bhéarla! Tá siad amhlaidh mar ní labhraíonn an ghlúin óg iad agus ní bhacann páistí agus déagóirí leo. Bheadh na teangacha sin á labhairt go nádúrtha ag a dtuismitheoirí sa tigh, ceart go leor, ach ní leanann a bpáistí leo agus ní thugann siad leo iad! I gcás na Gaeilge, ní mionteanga í i ndáiríre! Tá an t-ádh linn ar shlí gur teanga oifigiúil de chuid an stáit seo í agus go bhfuil an stádas agus an t-aitheantas dleathach san aici sa tír seo agus i bParlaimint na hEorpa. Ní hionann sin is a rá áfach go mbeidh an teanga slán sábháilte sna blianta atá romhainn! A mhalairt ar fad is amhlaidh! Tá a fhios againn ar fad nach mairfidh sí beo go dtí an céad seo chugainn gan beochainteoirí laethúla. Ní tharlóidh sé sin go dtí labhróimid sa bhaile, sa tigh lenár leanaí í. Caithfimid an teanga a sheachadadh go dtí an chéad ghlúin eile- ach ní dhéanfar san go dtí go mbeidh sí mar ghnáththeanga laethúil chumarsáide ag ár leanaí. Mar sin, níl aon rogha eile againn ach an Ghaeilge a thabhairt d’ár leanaí le go mbeadh sí acu ar feadh a saoil. Ná ligimis d’aon mhórtheanga í a alpadh siar mar a dhéanfadh “creachadóir”- téarma a bhaist an teangeolaí Meiriceánach, Nancy Horberger ar an mBéarla! Focail ghaífeacha, b’fhéidir, ach tá lón machnaimh ann dúinn, mar sin féin. Irish is not really a minority language! We are fortunate in that it has recognition as an official language of this state and that its constitutional status is enshrined here and in the European Parliament. This is not to say, however, that the language is safe and secure in the future! This is not so! We all know all that it will not survive until the next century without living speakers. This will not happen without people and children speaking it in the home. The language must be passed on to the next generation but this will certainly not happen until the language becomes the normal language of everyday communication by all or most of our children. So we have no other choice but to give the language to our children so that they will have it for life. Otherwise, it will become a victim to a “predator” language like English- a term used by the American linguist, Nancy Horberger. Strong words but room for thought, nonetheless! Teangacha mionlaigh: An scéal faoi láthair agus na dúshláin atá rompu Ar chuala tú riamh faoi mhionteangacha an domhain? An bhfuil a fhios agat go bhfuil a lán beotheangacha ar fud na cruinne i mbaol a mbáis? Áirítear faoi láthair go bhfuil thart ar 6,500 teanga ar fad á labhairt timpeall an domhain. Tá sé geall le bheith dochreidte go labhraítear níos mó ná 50% de na teangacha sin laistigh de theorainneacha ocht dtír ar fad; An Astráil, Meicsiceo, India, an Bhrasaíl agus Camarún san áireamh! Tá a fhios agam go n-éireofá bailithe de bheith ag cloisteáil faoi staitisticí, ach an chéad uair a chuala mé an fhíric sin, is cuimhin liom go maith gur baineadh siar asam! Shamhlófa an Astráil, cuir i gcás, le Béarla amháin agus an Bhrasaíl arís le Portaingéilis amháin; ach cad faoi na céadta teangacha eile a labhraítear sna tíortha sin? Is mionteangacha nó teangacha réigiúnacha iad na teangacha seo! Ciallaíonn mionteanga nó teanga réigiúnach teanga atá á labhairt mar bheotheanga laethúil chumarsáide i measc pobal áirithe; ach níos minicí ná eile- níl puinn aitheantais nó stádais aici. Go minic, ní bhíonn cead ag lucht a labhartha í a úsáid lasmuigh den teaghlach chun gnó a dhéanamh le heagrais stáit agus tráchtála. San Eoraip féin, áirítear go bhfuil thart ar 60 teanga mar sin ann. Shamhlófá b’fhéidir, nach bhfuil ach dornán daoine nó grúpaí mionlaigh a labhraíonn na teangacha sin-ach ní amhlaidh atá. Tá níos mó ná cúig mhilliún duine sa Spáinn, in Andóra, sna hOileáin Bhailéaracha agus sa tSairdín, cuir i gcás a labhraíonn Catalóinis, ceann de mhionteangacha na hEorpa! Tá na Catalóinigh ag déanamh a seacht ndíchill stádas agus cearta teanga 44 West Kerry Live

A cracking game between two very well organised & competitive sides resulted in a point apiece after a very close contest last Saturday in the first U17 game of the season. Both sides opened with some lovely passing moves but it was Dynamos that broke the deadlock with a great finish after about 20 minutes and despite Castle really pushing for a leveller and creating a number of very good chances it was Dynamos that struck next and doubled their lead before HT with another great strike leaving the half time score at 2-0 to the visitors. In the second half Castle really kicked into gear with Jack Nix and Jason Griffin taking hold in midfield and Tomás Butler and Patrick O Donoghue causing lots of trouble up front. In fact it was Tomás that pulled one back with a thumping volley from 12 yards after a super run and shot by Jason Griffin after some great work by Patrick O Donoghue and Michael Scanlon on 60 minutes. From here Castle began to dominate and were rewarded for their efforts when Tomas Butler and Jimmy O Grady combined well on the right which saw Jimmy cut in across the edge of the box and set up the onrushing Jason Griffin who absolutely hammered an unstoppable shot into the near

top corner to tie the game. Despite the best efforts from both sides the match remained at 2-2 which was probably a fair result. Overall, the standard of soccer played by both sides gives great hope for the future of Kerry soccer and there were some fantastic displays by players on both teams. For Castle the stand out players were Brandon Begley, Cormac Cronin, Patrick O Donoghue, Tomás Butler, Jason Griffin and Jack Nix, and also the new additions Jimmy O Grady and Michael Scanlon who were both excellent. It was great to see how well this team have developed and with such a good performance in the first game we are really looking forward to a great season for the U17s. Breandán Mac Gearailt Craobh Baineadh an bonn ós na sinsir i gCraobh Éireann C LG fé bhrat báistí, ní brat a bhí ann ach barthannach bháistí ach má bhí bhí sí ag titim ar an dá fhoireann. Deir scata go raibh sé tuillte ag Bleá Cliath agus is dócha go bhfuil an ceart acu, ach ní aontaím go raibh Ciarraí chomh holc agus a meastar. Go deimhin chuireadar scata liathróíde ar fóraíl sa chéad leat cuid acu ós chómhair an bháide. Roimhe seo bhíodar ag cur iarrachtaí mar seo idir na pollaí gan aon nath. Cinnte bhí feall déanta ar Phaul Geaney ach tugadh cic shaor do Bhleá Cliath. Bhí scata daoine mar a rabhasa agus mé gairid go maith dhó don tuairim nár phointe ceann do phointí Bhlea Cliath sa dara leath. Bhí an craoltóir radio ag an aigne chéanna. Níor cheistigh na Ciarraíg an cúram. Bhí pictiúir ar nuachtán mar a raibh Donaghy á tharrac chun talún. Cic pinóis a bhí ann ach ní fuair sé faic. Uair eile agus Donaghy ag dul i dtreo na caide deineadh feall follasach air ach ní raibh giocs as feadóg an réiteora. Sin iad na rudaí a chuireann conach ar dhaoine agus is deacair é a thogaint ortha. Bhí Mac Muiris ina Naomh an mhaidin sin agus bhí cló eile luaite leis an trathnóna sin. Ní hé a haon é. Cinnte níor cheart Ó Donchú na Colm Geaney a thógaint don ngort. Sin beirt a gheoobhadh pointí nó báidí. Bhí chúig phoinnte fachta acu eatortha. Dá bhfaghadh aon duine don mbeirt an pas breá a cuireadh go dtí Young bheadh sí ag baint raithneach as an líontán. Shleamhnaigh fear na Rinn Airde. Go deimhin chuir Donaghy scaipeadh ar chuid do iarrachtai Bhleá Cliath agus is trua nár tugadh Tommy Walsh isteach mar tá sé ard leathan láidir agus bhí sé ag imirt go diail le linn traeneala más fíor. Níor mhór liom do Mhaigh Eó an chraobh, ach níl Bleá Cliaith ró-dhealbh. Má bhíomair in ísle brí agus na pinginí cailte againn, chuir na mionúir árdú meanmain orainn. Ó, bhíodar i bhfad Éireann ró-mhaith do Thiobrad Árann bocht. Bhí buachaillí an Daingin go diail ar fad. Chuirfeadh cuid dos na caideanna a tharraig Marc Ó Conchúir as na scamaill Darragh Ó Sé, Jackó nó Mícheál Ó Conaill i gcuimhne dhuit. Déanfaidh na sinsir sciolach fós.

do na geallúintí a thugann aon dream acu. An bhfuil an cheacht san foghlamtha fós againn? Níl, agus is dócha ná beidh go bráth. Scéal thairis agus is dócha spreang misnigh do chuid againn go bhfuil sé luaite le Ceannaire nua pháirtí an Lucht Oibre sa Bhreatain má bhíonn sé riamh i gcumhacht tá sé sean-ráite aige go dtabharfaidh sé aitheantas do Éire Aontaithe. Bheadh na Caomhaigh ar dearg bhuile gan teacht ar chuid dár gcomharsain ó Thuaidh. Ba bhrea linn go léir é, ach is mó cos barrthuisleach a chuirfidh an chinniúint roimpi agus gan aon tuairim againn fútha. San idirlinn gheallfadh cuid acu siúd go bhfuil a n-aghaidh ar an nDáil acu, tae sa leabaidh dhuit. Is cuma cé a bhuafaidh toghachán na Dála, ná bímis i mbun cámais, mar sinne a chuirfidh ‘on Dáil iad, mar a deineadh leis na cianta. Tá sé in am ag an bpobal stop do bheith ag gabháil stealladh ar na hiarrathóirí, is cuma cé hiad. ‘Sé an pobal a chinnteóidh cé a bheidh i gceannas. Mar sin má bhíonn aon ghearáin deineadh daoine a scrúdú coinsiasa féin. Ceist agam ort 1. An mó pony a bhí in úsáid in aon bhabhta don ‘Pony Express’? 2. Le linn Cogadh Domhanda 11 an mó lá a thógadh sé ar Mheiriceá long cogaidh a thógaint? 3. Cén t-imreoir CLG a bhuaidh cúig bhonn sinsir Éireann as a chéile? 4. Má chonaicís an scannnán ‘Pulp Fiction’ cén t-am a bhí ar gach clog a bhí le feiscint ann? 5. Cén ainm cheart a bhí ar Cinderella? 6. Cén t-abhar a theip Elvis Presley ina scrúdaithe? 7. An mó uair sa bhliain a bhíodh damhach/ bath ag Louis X1V na Frainnce?

Felicity Hayes-McCoy foilsithe ag Collins Press ‘How do we know that what we remember is the truth? Inspired by the story of her relative Marion Stokes, one of three women who raised the tricolour over Enniscorthy in Easter Week 1916, Felicity Hayes-McCoy explores the consequences for all of us when memories are manipulated or obliterated, intentionally or by chance. In the power struggle after the Easter Rising, involving, among others, Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera, the ideals for which Marion and her companions fought were eroded, resulting in an Ireland marked by chauvinism, isolationism and secrecy. By mapping her own family stories onto the history of the state, Felicity examines how Irish life today has been affected by the censorship and mixed messages of the past.

WEDNESDAY

Absorbing, entertaining and touching, her story moves from Washerwomans’s Hill in Dublin to London and back again, spans two world wars, a revolution, a civil war and the development of a republic, and culminates in Ireland’s 2015 same-sex marriage referendum.’
