Dingle Historical Society presents

Trekking Through Time in Dingle Archaeology of the hills and mountains of the Dingle Peninsula A lecture by Martin Fitzpatrick, Archaeologist. Lecture venue: Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle. Date: Thursday, 18th June, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome An illustrated lecture on the monuments encountered in our uplands with particular reference to the Dingle peninsula. Archaeologist Martin Fitzpatrick will highlight the history of the area through the monuments we stumble across on our adventures into the hills. This lecture will unravel some of the area's history through the surviving monuments and provide an opportunity to get to know something of human engagement with this wonderful landscape from prehistory to the 19th century. Martin Fitzpatrick, living in County Galway, is a professional archaeologist working in Irish archaeology for the past 20 years. He has a keen interest in the archaeology of the uplands and has contributed a number of articles on the subject. Martin is a keen hill walker and over the last few years has spent most of his free time hiking in Ireland, Scotland, Spain, and France on both guided and non-guided hikes. He has over the last numbers of years facilitated global tour companies, which includes National Geographic, in providing tours for discerning traveler’s intent on getting an experience in Ireland in the company of a professional archeologist & outdoors enthusiast.

8.45pm Tuesday Nights The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 16th June will be “The Water Diviner”. The film is the directorial debut of it’s starring actor, Russell Crowe and is complex and gripping tale set around the Battle of Gallipoli a century ago. After the battle an Australian

farmer, Connor (Crowe), travels to Turkey to try to find his 3 missing sons. While staying at a hotel in Istanbul, he meets war-widowed Ayshe the Turkish hotel manager and tries to find a way to Gallipoli. The story is sensitively told from both perspectives of the historic divide. The following week on Tuesday 23rd June the feature will be the Irish made “Glassland”. Starring Jack Reynor as a young Dublin taxi driver who gets tangled up in the world of human trafficking while trying to save his mother (Toni Collette) from addiction. Glassland is a melancholic and haunting look at the battles that take place behind closed doors with Reynor and Collette giving outstanding performances. 4 West Kerry Live

Spastic Paraparesis Eddie O’ Grady Hereditary spastic paraparesis is a rare hereditary disorder that causes gradual weakness with muscle spasms (spastic weakness) in the legs. It affects between 3 and 10 people per 100,000individuals. The disorder has several forms. All forms cause degeneration of the nerve pathways that carry signals from the brain down the spinal cord (to muscles). SYMPTOMS Symptoms may begin at any age from even as young as age 1 up to old age. Reflexes become exaggerated, and leg cramps, twitches, and spasms occur, making leg movements stiff and jerky. Walking gradually becomes more difficult. People may stumble or trip because they tend to walk on their tiptoes with feet turned inwards. Fatigue is common. In some people, muscles in the arms also become weak and stiff. Usually, symptoms continue to slowly worsen, but sometimes they level off after adolescence. Life span is not affected. About 10% of people with the disorder have other abnormalities due to damage of the brain, spinal cord, or nerves. For example, they may have eye problems, lack of muscle control, hearing loss, intellectual disability, dementia, and peripheral nerve disorders. DIAGNOSIS • Exclusion of other disorders with similar symptoms is necessary • Identification of family members with the disorder is important • Sometimes blood tests are undertaken to exclude other disorders The disorder is diagnosed by excluding other disorders that cause similar symptoms (such as multiple sclerosis and spinal cord compression) and by determining whether other family members have hereditary spastic paraparesis. Blood tests (genetic testing) are sometimes done to check for genes that cause the disorder.

The

TREATMENT •

Physical therapy and exercise

A drug to reduce spasticity

Treatment focuses on mainly on relieving symptoms as there is no cure. Physical therapy and exercise can help maintain mobility and muscle strength, improve range of movement and endurance, reduce fatigue, and prevent cramps and spasms. Drugs such as baclofen (a muscle relaxant) is the drug of choice to reduce spasticity. Alternatively, botulinum toxin (a bacterial toxin used to paralyze muscles or to treat wrinkles), clonazepam, dantrolene, diazepam , tizanidine may be used. Some people benefit from using splints, a cane, or crutches. A few people require a wheelchair.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "ThermodynamFáilte roimh gach éinne. ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs Antonio Fazio on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so aDingle typical hot water bill for a family of Cloosmore (Burnham) 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Dingle Screenwriter Wins Top Award At Nashville Film Festival

Dingle-based screenwriter Brian MacEvilly has been voted Overall Winner of this year's Nashville Film Festival International Screenwriting Competition. The contest received 1,350 entries. MacEvilly won for Best Comedy Feature script with his screenplay ‘The Full Irish’, took Second Place in the Drama Feature category with his script ‘Independence Pass’, and also took a Second with his short script ‘the home of rock’. ‘The Full Irish’ tells the tale of a New York mafia duo who suddenly find themselves stranded in the West of Ireland. ‘Independence Pass’ is described as a “hate-at-first-sight Drama/Love Story”. And In ‘The Home of Rock’ a jaded American guitar legend gets a lesson in roots music when he takes on a pair of Old Timers in an Irish country pub. MacEvilly has a history of contest successes, having previously won the Atlantis Award at the Moondance Film Festival in New York, the Acclaim Scripts 2014 Fall/Winter Contest, and a Best Short in Los Angeles for ‘Animals’, a tale of human desperation set during the Irish Famine.

Láithreacha ósna Meánaoiseanna i gCorca Dhuibhne/ Medieval Sites on the Dingle Peninsula Isabel Bennett Cé go raibh na Normannaigh in Éirinn ó dheireadh na tarna haoise déag, ní rabhadar ag cur fúthu i gCorca Dhuibhne go dtí tosach na tríú haoise déag, agus is beag iarsma a mhaireann ón dtréimhse sin. Bhí tailte móra sa leithinis ag Ridirí Chiarraí, brainse sóisearach desna Gearaltaigh, fé cheannas Iarla Deasumhan; is ag Ráthanáin i bparóiste Fionntrá a bhí a bpríomhláthair. Maidir le saol na heaglaise, is ósna meánaoiseanna anuas atá an eaglais in Éirinn eagraithe de réir chóras paróistí agus deoisí; tháinig an córas san chun cinn ins an tarna haois déag. Bunaíodh naoi bparóiste déag i gCorca Dhuibhne; tógadh cuid desna sáipéil ar láithreacha a luadh leis an Luathré Chríostaí, cé gur ar láithreacha nua a tógadh scata eile acu. Most of the standing medieval remains on the peninsula are either the remains of parish churches, or tower-house ‘castles’ (dating from the 14th to the 16th century). It was not until the 12th century and after that the diocesan and parochial system, on which the church in medieval and post-medieval Ireland was organised, began to fully take shape. Nineteen parishes were established in Corca Dhuibhne, with some of their churches on the sites of Early Christian establishments, although many were on new ground. Today there are standing remains at 12 sites and, apart from the magnificent 12th-century Romanesque church at Kilmalkedar, they are all simple rectangular gabled buildings, with no apparent division between nave and chancel, and with little ornamentation. Among the best preserved examples are Stradbally, Killiney and Kilshannig (near Castlegregory), Ballywiheen (near Ballyferriter) and Cloghane. Other churches can be seen at Dunquin and Inch. Excavations in 1991 at Dún Urlann, in Na Gorta Dubha near Ballyferriter, exposed the remains of the church there which had been obscured. There are grave slabs of medieval date in the cemetery around St James’ Church in Dingle. Although the first Normans came to Ireland towards the end of the 12th century, it was not until the beginning of the 13th century that their settlement of Corca Dhuibhne began, and we have few if any remains of that early period. There are standing remains of only 5 castles in the area, the other 12 having disappeared, although their locations are known. Tower-houses generally consist of rectangular towers of 3-5 storeys, with narrow windows and crenellated battlements and were built as the fortified residences of the Anglo-Irish and Irish gentry alike. The Knights of Kerry, a junior branch of the FitzGeralds, held extensive lands on the peninsula, under the Earls of Desmond, with Rahinnane,

near Ventry, as their chief seat. The remains at Minard and Gallarus, and possibly Moorestown, are also of FitzGerald castles, and they would also have had others in the area, including at Dingle town. The castle at Ballyoughteragh (Ferriter’s Castle) was that of another Anglo-Norman family, the Ferriters and other families which were represented in the area included the Rices and the Husseys. At Kilmalkedar, the buildings known as ‘The Chancellor’s House’ and ‘St Brendan’s (or the Priests’) House’ might also have their origins in the later medieval period.

COMMUNITY ALERT The Community Alert Public Meeting organised by Camp Community Council on Sunday last was well attended. Gárda Nina Long gave a very informative talk and stressed the need for awareness of cars, vans or other vehicles, many of whom are bogus traders who are coming around rural areas and targeting older people or people living alone. Take car registration number and inform the Gárdaí and they will check them out. Ask for contact telephone number which can be checked out , you can verify a number yourself by calling 11890. Gárda Long advised people not to leave valuables in parked cars in car parks adjacent to local beaches. Motorists speeding on our roads was also cited as a huge danger to road users. Gárda Long would welcome information from the public confidentially or otherwise on any suspicious movements or behaviour in the area. Gárda Long praised highly the local Home Helps who are providing a wonderful service to our elderly. They play a huge role in supporting older people in our communities and for many people they may well be the only carer/visit they have during the week. Thanks to Gárda Long for her commitment and excellent work with our community.

BSE Certification A Huge Boost For Beef Trade The decision by the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) to recognise Ireland as a country having a negligible risk for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been hugely welcomed by the agri-sector. This reflects the huge progress made over many years in eradicating this disease from the national herd. BSE had caused very considerable disruption to trade in the beef sector in the past and the measures taken both to protect public health and to eradicate the disease had imposed very considerable costs on the beef sector. The next step in the process is to give practical and legal effect to the OIE decision at EU level, and indicated that this would allow his Department to engage with competent authorities in third countries with a view to agreeing simplified trade certification conditions over time. The effect of the decision will be to significantly reduce the list of materials derived from bovines which have to be disposed of as SRMs (specified risk materials). It is estimated that the potential value of this change to the meat processing sector will be of the order of €25m per annum. However the real benefit to the beef industry will be market access and new trade opportunities for Ireland. The OIE decision will further advance Ireland’s reputation with other beef markets around the world. This announcement provides compelling evidence of the effectiveness of the measures taken over the years to control and eradicate this disease and is evidence of the commitment, expertise and dedication of all Department staff and stakeholders who contributed to this development. The Muslim festival of Ramadan begins next week and it is set to plan an important role in the development of Irish lamb this summer. The festival is already having a positive impact on Irish lamb prices this week. And comes at an important time for the industry. Spring lamb numbers coming to market are rising week by week this time of the year and, according to Fennell, Ramadam is always welcome over the period. Ramadam is one of three key events for the Irish market every year. It comes between the equally important Easter period and another key Muslim festival Eid al-Adha (EID) in late September. Demand for lamb from Muslim festivals comes from two avenues – live exports and exports of sheep meat. Live export demand was very strong in 2014 ahead of the Ramadam festival, however of the back of political instability in Libya this trade fell back significantly last year. To date there are no indications of a surge in live exports ahead of this years Ramadam festival. However, he did say that the month of Sept could see increased live exports for IEDs. Both France and the UK are key markets during Muslim festivals. With Muslim populations of 6.5m and 3m respectively, both are key drivers of demand over the periods. However, he also noted that demand from the 50,000 strong Irish Muslim community is also important. All indications have been good for lamb crop this year. Ideal conditions for tupping as well as good weather at lambing point to this. However, the latest census suggested that ewe numbers were down slightly. However, there is no doubt that there is more lambs on the ground at the moment. Despite this lambs have been slow to come to the market. A cold and and wet May has seen slower growth rates and as such lambs have been slower to come fit for slaughter. In terms of the development of lamb prices over the summer an orderly supply of lambs to the market is all important for prices. Having supply and demand evenly matched is all important for price,” he said. Commonage Management Plans Commonage farmers who applied for GLAS must be participating in a Commonage Management Plan by August 31st if their GLAS application is to be approved. The first step in this process is for an advisor to be approved for the commonage. The closing date for advisors to apply for this role is next Friday, i.e. June 12th. If you have applied for GLAS and your commonage is not on one of these lists you should contact your planner as a matter of urgency as there is a very real risk that your GLAS application will fail. How it works is that an advisor needs to be appointed to carry out Commonage assessment and management proposals for each commonage. He must have the support of at least 50% of active farmers on an individual commonage. This is not a great example of how to organise such a task, as there seems to be circumstances where either neighbours or advisors cannot work together. This is causing major obstacles to getting commonages assessed. Should these not be assessed, the associated GLAS applications will become null and void. It is therefore essential that agreement be reached on all commonages by all sghareholders. It is essential therefore that you have agreed with your fellow shareholders on your commonage which advisor is to prepare the Commonage Management Plan. This is a farmer driven process, but advisors are doing their utmost to ensure that all commonages are assessed. Although it is very late not, there is still time, and a list of commonages advisors is available on the Department of Agriculture website. Cost of preparing the CMP falls on the farmer/shareholders, but farmers who have not joined GLAS do not have to sign up the the plan. If you do sign up, you must abide by the recommendations of the plan and pay for your share of it. For further information contact:- Louis Murchan 087-2857938

Dingle Tidy Towns News Richie Williams The judges of the National Competition will be paying their annual visit to West Kerry within the next 10 days. We are appealing to everybody to make a decent effort to keep the area outside and near their business premises or private residence free of litter and weeds and generally in a presentable state for both locals and tourists to admire.

Our Work Evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.00p.m.and we definitely need more willing bodies to show their pride in our Town. The County Council Staff have been a great help with some heavy work done around town in grass cutting and strimming the approach roads as well as their daily litter collections in streets and car parks and public places, Mile Buiochas lads. We have extracted some of the weed overgrowth along the Mall River over the past week and hope to place new flower tubs made from recycled timber in the vacant riverside space at the rear of the Cinema shortly. All the public timber seats around town should be returned to their original bright red Dingle colour by the time you read this page! The Dog Poo situation is still a source of major concern as is the huge amount of cigarette buts on streets and paths in almost all areas. More drastic action like name and shame has been suggested to us and is a distinct possibility. Lots more to do so please start today by looking after your own area and encourage or even shame others to get going also.

News from the Díseart

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Bhí biaiste an-ghnóthach cúrsaí do mhic léinn Ollscoile againn sa Bhealtaine agus go tús an Mheithimh. Bhí trí ollscoil i gceist—SHU, Washington Lee, Kansas City Law School. Bhí os cionn céad scoláire againn le chéile. Bhí sé deacair plé le cuairteoirí san am céanna. Bhí a lán cuairteoirí ar mhian leo ár n-ealaín laistigh a fheiceáil agus nuair nárbh fhéidir an réimse go léir a fheiceáil fuaireadar lascaine. Tá beagán de na cúrsaí a bhí á dteagasc do scoláirí SHU nuair a thánadar ar dtús á ndéanamh go fóill. Tá díomá orm gur beag an aird atá ar an bpríomhchúrsa is spéis leis an Díseart, Diagacht agus Spioradáltacht na hÉireann. Bainim féin an-taitneamh as an léacht a thugaim do scoláirí dlí Kansas a iarrann orm i gcónaí léacht a thabhairt ar an bhFéineachas, nó Dlithe na mBreithiún. Tá an dara gairdín, an Gairdín Urnaí á fhorbairt an saesúr seo. Táimid ag súil leis go mbeidh sé le hoscailt um Shamhain nuair a bheidh sé tráthúil arís crainn a chur. Luigh an stoirm ghaoithe i deireadh na Bealtaine ábhar ar chuid de na crainn sa tríú gairdín ach níor leagadh go talamh aon chrann agus tá teannta á chur againn le haon cheann a ghéill ábhar don ngaoith. Tá dhá leabhar dár gcuid ag na clódóirí faoi láthair. Beidh an-éileamh ar cheann acu—Saol agus Saothar Phiarais Mhic Gearailt le Breandán Ó Cróinín a chuir barr slachta ar a Ghaelainn i mBaile an Lochaigh. Fuair sé céad onóracha sa Ghaeilge a chéad bhliain i Maigh Nuad agus mé féin a theagasc. An-chara dom’ athair ab ea a athair críonna a thagadh go Cáit Ní Shé ar saoire; an-thigh bothántaíochta ab ea a tigh siúd an uair sin. Bhíodh idir óg agus aosta ann sa samhradh. Tá an ráitheachán AN SAGART dulta in éag ach tá Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad 2015 ag dul chun an chlódóra an tseachtain seo agus é breá toirtiúil. Bhí aighneas faoi gan Bíobla a bheith ar fáil i dtithe cúirte le déanaí. Tá gach seans go mbeidh an fhadhb sin á réiteach sara fada agus sin le cabhair ár mBíobla beag dearg féin. 20 West Kerry Live

We had a record number of university students on study abroad this year, about 100 from three different universities—SHU, Washington Lee, and Kansas City Law School. All our halls were occupied. In spite of that we succeeded in welcoming a record number of visitors to our artistic treasures: our fresco of the Last Supper which is so exceptional in these times. Our two recent murals in the Hallway, the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, and the Finding of Jesus, are attracting a lot of attention. Some of the 54 figures in the Finding of Jesus mural suffered some blistering in our stormy weather but our artist is at hand to have that rectified and the source of the water has been attended to. We had a record number of visitors in May and some were unable to see all our treasures so it was arranged that they would have a discount. Our Chapel is beidh availed of by more and more choirs and orchestras. Our next publication, Saol agus Saothar Phiarais Mhic Gearailt, will be launched in Mary Immaculate College Limerick, 11 June 8p.m. The author is Dr. Breandán Ó Cróinín whose grandfather was a regular summer visitor to Katy Shea’s Ballymore which in those days was a popular rambling house. Dr. Breandán however put slacht on his Gaelainn in Baile an Lochaigh.

Remembering Delia Murphy In Story And Song

Senator Marie Moloney

Friday 12 June, Ionad An Bhlascaoid Mhóir, 7.30 pm Delia Murphy was a revered singer in her day and is remembered by many older Irish people who might have heard her in concert, played her music or heard her broadcast on radio. Known as The Queen of Connemara, and famous for renditions of such songs as “The Spinning Wheel”, Delia was a pioneering figure in Irish folk. Indeed Liam Clancy said of her - that she was a pivotal figure who took up the Irish ballad and turned it into something of her own and that she was the single most important person in preserving this form of music and enabling it to have the life and popularity it has today.

will be holding an advice clinic in the following areas: 3rd Friday of each month:

Castlegregory - Club Room @ 1pm Annascaul - Annascaul House B&B @ 2pm Dingle - Hannie Agnes's Pub @ 3pm 1st Friday of each Month

Killorglin- Manor Inn Hotel @ 11am Caherciveen - Community Centre @ 12.30pm Waterville - The Villa @1.30pm Kenmare - The Brooklane Hotel @ 4pm

She also graced the silver screen and one day in 1938, quite out of the blue, Delia was offered a part in the film “The Islandman” that was being made on the Great Blasket island and in London. Delia stayed on the Island during the filming and was impressed by the quiet dignity and ease of manner of the people there. Now on the 80th anniversary of Delia’s first appearance in public as a singer, her niece Carmen Cullen is bringing her story to Ionad An Bhlascaoid in Dún Chaoin on Friday 12th June at 7.30pm. Accompanied by musician Gerry Anderson, Carmen sings the songs that her aunt made her own as well as sharing stories and photographs of this groundbreaking singer.

Don’t let Ulcers put you down in the Mouth! Irene Ní Fhlannúra You may be well advised not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but you should keep an eye on things happening in your own mouth! Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores can be very painful and make talking, eating and drinking less than pleasurable. Most of us will experience a mouth ulcer from time to time during our lifetimes, but for some it can be a chronic, recurrent problem that needs to be addressed. The causes of mouth ulcers are so diverse but with a little detective work, the root cause can be unravelled. Physical trauma to the inside of mouth is quite common - ill-fitting dentures, orthodontics (braces), accidental biting, vigorous tooth brushing, very hot food/ drinks and salty foods can damage the linings inside the mouth resulting in an ulcer. These ulcers will heal once the source of trauma is removed. However, recurrent mouth ulcers can arise from less obvious sources such as medication, particularly aspirin and chemotherapy. Chemicals found in mouthwash and tooth paste such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and alcohol are often implicated in persistent mouth ulcers. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a chemical used solely to make toothpaste foamy. SLS is also used in shampoo and bodywash products but thankfully, there are many brands that don’t use SLS, so it is not difficult to find replacements. There has also been widespread concern of the use of alcohol in mouthwash preparations and it seems that it is quite unnecessary so check out the alternatives of a gentler mouthwash if needed. Infections from bacteria, viruses and fungi can also lead to ulceration of the mouth linings, or make existing ulcers larger and slower to heal. They are mostly kept in check with our own natural defenses found in our saliva, such as good bacteria and enzymes, but the battle between us and them is often challenged by poor hygiene, poor diet and the over use of powerful antimicrobial toothpastes and mouthwashes. The link between diet and mouth ulcers is well documented. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the protein which forms the basis of connective tissue in the body. Connective tissue is the most abundant tissue found in the body and acts as a cementing substance between cells. It also helps support and protect blood vessels, bones, joints, organs and muscles and forms a sizeable proportion of skin, tendons, the cornea of the eye, ligaments, cartilage, teeth and bone. Collagen forms a protective barrier and promotes healing of wounds, fractures and bruises. A deficiency in vitamin C can result in the breakdown of cells in the mucosal linings, resulting in ulceration. The extreme of this scenario is seen in scurvy, a disease that plagued sailors in the 16th to 18th centuries who navigated long voyages without enough vitamin C and frequently perished from the condition. English sailors acquired the term “limeys” because they carried limes on their journeys to successfully prevent and cure them of scurvy. A less extreme lack of vitamin C can result is mouth ulcers as the linings of the mouth disintegrate without sufficient supply. Vitamin B12, folate, zinc and iron deficiencies are also known causes of mouth ulcers as these are the nutrients required to keep the linings of the mouth healthy and strong. A varied diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, fish and meat will ensure that you have a steady supply of these nutrients. If you suffer from recurrent mouth ulcers look to your diet for the remedy. The nutrients necessary for building a strong barrier in the linings are also necessary for wound healing and good immunity. Ensure you are getting enough of vitamin C and B vitamins on a daily basis as these are not stored in the body and must be replaced every day. Zinc and iron levels can be topped up with a supplement if your diet does not meet the demand, as indeed can B vitamins and vitamin C. Anyone with chronic mouth ulcers should supplement the diet with these nutrients as the demand for them is even greater during an outbreak. Stress, too, results in the depletion of B vitamins and vitamin C so in stressful times it is wise to meet the demands of the body with a good quality multivitamin and mineral formula. Probiotics, available in lozenges will replenish the friendly bacteria that are often wiped 22 West Kerry Live

out with antibiotics and antimicrobial oral hygiene products. Finally, amino acids L-lysine and L-glutamine are needed to maintain, repair and regenerate cells of all intestinal linings, including those in the mouth and should be added to your regime for the prevention and treatment of mouth ulcers. There you have it, all you need to keep you smiling from ear to ear! Love Drives Out Fear -Pastor Shaun Abrahams MA.Th

Sunday Service at 10:30 am - Wednesday Bible Study 7:30pm Chapel on the Hill, Market Street, Killorglin Tel: 085 1541673/085 1101113 E: info@killorglinbaptistchurch.com

1 John 4:18 ‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.’ We simply cannot escape the reality of fear. Perhaps you are anxious about your financial status, your children, health or your own sense of happiness. Some fear is good. For one, we know that the scriptures teach that a healthy fear of God is essential for true wisdom and knowledge. We know that a right reverence of God will protect the Christian from a multitude of evils. (Proverbs 1:7). Secondly fear is also the alarm bell that God has given us to recognise danger so we can protect ourselves in a wicked and sinful world. King David often fled for his life when danger was imminent. Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt to protect the Lord Jesus. Thirdly, fear can cause a response that renders us defenceless and feeling hopeless. Often I talk to Christians who have serious panic attacks and fears or phobias of some sort or the other. Some struggle with a fear of failure, others with inadequacy or insecurity. As a husband and father with a spouse who has gone through cancer on three separate occasions, I have learnt as a Christian to respond to fear with trust and faith in a loving God. I have also learnt that reacting with sacrificial love by outwardly focussing on caring for the needs of others is the ‘way out’ of my hopeless response to fear. The apostle John makes a profound statement when he writes ‘love drives out fear’. The love John means here is sacrificial, selfless and focused on the needs of others. This kind of love is the distinctive feature of biblical Christianity. God is love and the ultimate demonstration of His love is demonstrated in the sacrificial death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Christians are simply those who personally trust in that sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ. The love of Christ becomes both the example and the motivation of the type of love Christians are to demonstrate in fearful situations. Learning to love others ‘drives out’ the fear of whatever personal loss and danger we are anticipating. Fear that renders us permanently inoperative as Christians and stifles our ability to worship God is not a healthy fear. When fear threatens to shut us down we naturally go into a self- preservation mode. It is then that we must respond and consider the question ‘Am I trusting God’. The prophet Isaiah writes ‘Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of The Lord and rely on his God’. Resting in the love of Christ will set the Christian free from a crippling fear. Trusting in an Almighty God in the midst of a fearful situation is the ‘doorway’ to experiencing grace and strength from a Loving Father. Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Killorglin Tidy Towns Orna Eccles Killorglin Tidy Towns would like to give a huge shout out to all the Kfest committee for another very successful festival here in Killorglin. There was incredible time & talent put in behind the scenes which made this year a tremendous and outstanding success. Judging time is now on top of us and we know for sure we are scheduled for a visit from next Monday 15th on. We have been working tirelessly over the winter and spring month’s to have our town looking it’s best. Lots of jobs on our submission to do list have finally come to fruition, starting with all the approach roads beyond the town limits. Ballykissane Pier got a great face lift with new benches and all black railings painted. Also the instillation of a water pump and another new bench on the Ballykissane Rd on the left side before the pier. Take a walk if you haven't already to check it out perhaps you can take a picnic with you. All tall and small planters, sewer pipes and hanging baskets done throughout the town. Tralee Rd weeded, litter picked and swept very thoroughly which includes all the traffic islands. Iveragh Rd & Crow's Rd all weeding has been completed. Library Place got a glam make over as they washed and scrubbed the fountains and chalk drawing all over the Plaza. The Children's Playground has also received a big makeover - Lots of native and sustainable fruit bearing trees were planted and a fabulous mural painted on the back wall - special thanks to Rosie Magee, Killorglin Tidy Towns, Mike Ahern KFEST, Scoil Mhuire Students, Ian McGrigor at Gortbrack Organic Farm and all in Kerry County Council who provided support for the project. Big Demand for Conversational English Classes in Killarney A new conversational English language class – Failte Isteach - being run in Killarney through South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. in conjunction with Third Age has attracted a large number of people from many countries. The class is aimed at migrants who do not have English as their main language. The Failte Isteach programme being run in Killarney was developed by the active retired group Third Age based in County Meath. They first began the initiative as a small project in the village of Summerhill in 2006 with the aim of helping those in the migrant communities in that area develop a confidence in speaking English as well as a means of helping encourage integration within the different communities. It has since spread around the country to other communities and is being implemented in the greater Killarney area by SKDP. Community Development Manager Paul O’Raw described how the basis of the programme is the group of trained volunteer tutors who come in to work with the students attending. “We are lucky to have 7 trained tutors on the programme in Killarney at present and they are working with some 25 students who are attending the course” Paul said. He added that the course runs for circa 10 weeks and is for around 2 hours a week with the students having a book that will assist them developing their skills further during the course of the week. The current course is full but it is planned to start a new course in September which will be well advertised in advance to make sure we get as many as possible to participate Paul concluded

High Speed Fibre Comes West Joan Maguire In August 2015 the cable linking Dingle town to the high speed network will be completed. This high speed fibre will then be connected to a number of cabinets which according to Eircom are being installed and worked on at present. In quick succession after the completion of the Fibre infrastructure all the houses and premises within a 1.5km range of the cabinets will be connected to high speed broadband. The quality of the speed will vary according to the distance from the cabinet. There are six cabinets in the town and its environs , in the following locations, by the pier; one on the Spa road; one at Milltown; one near Holyground ; one at the top of Green Street and one in Ballineetig/Garfinny. This infrastructure will allow speeds of up to 100Mb/s to homes and businesses. The service providers including Eircom, Vodafone and Sky will then offer packages to their customers and potential customers. Earlier this week Eircom announced that they will extend their network to provide Fibre Broadband to, Annascaul; Asdee;Ballyferriter; Blackwater Bridge; Ballylongford; Brosna; Ballinskelligs, Ballydavid; Caragh Lake; Castlegregory; Cloghane; Clonkeen; Caherdaniel; Dromatin Cross; Finuge; Glencar, Headford; Inch; Portmagee; Scartaglin; Sneem; Tuosist and Ventry, it is a mixed blessing for these areas as this extension will take a number of years to complete. In the meantime, in the words of an infamous Irish politician: "we have to collectively tighten our belts, we are using Internet capacity away and above the means that are available to us". For this summer anyway we are confined to using the technology that we have in place at the moment and that is, in Dingle town, as stretched as a size 10 pink lycra top on a baby elephant. At present we do not have enough bandwidth coming into the town of Dingle through the telephone lines to do any more than simple Interent work, we do not have the capacity available to provide satisfactory streaming of films and other video heavy online gaming functions. Other regions fare better at this point as there providers can be any one of the mobile phone operators, Kerry Broadband or one of the satellite companies such as DigiWeb. It is only by changing system or by having a separate connection to the Internet through a mobile phone company or one of the satellite providers that people, who have thier Interent service provided through their phone line can increase the capacity that they have available to themselves their children and their visitors. It makes no difference whether you change provider or upgrade your package, if your Internet is coming through the phone line the amount of download speed you will get is, a small piece of the pink stretched lycra top. That is until August, now there is a little more to look forward to as well as the Dingle Races, the Regattas and the Perseids meteor shower). Joan Maguire runs Compucara on Dykegate Lane Dingle

Hurling For The Kingdom Tadhg Evans Well over a century has elapsed since Kerry hurling’s most illustrious triumph. Of the county’s thirty-eight All-Ireland senior titles, their capture of the 1891 hurling championship protrudes awkwardly, failing to correlate with the thirty-seven football titles that have followed since. When Ballyduff represented the county all those years ago, they captured the only hurling successes of genuine note that can be attributed to a county that can bask in a glorious footballing tradition. Kerry were disfigured by their hated neighbours Cork in the Munster hurling championship of 2004, and have not graced hurling’s top tier since. When they won the Christy Ring Cup in 2011, they wisely opted not to return to the days of providing token opposition for one of Munster’s five hurling tribes. Instead, they continued to ply their trade amongst equals. Last Saturday, the county’s hurlers embarked upon a battle that could genuinely be considered the most significant since Wexford’s succumbed to the Kingdom in the showpiece match of 1891. The clash with Derry did not cultivate the celebrations that greeted the ignominy inflicted upon Waterford in the 1993 Munster Championship, or All-Ireland champions Clare in the 1995/96 National League. But its significance for a team that has recently attained a certain level of respect from Kerry’s football-centric GAA followers was paramount. Most of the victories attained by the Kerry hurlers down through the decades have been of the moral variety. Their victory on Saturday was free from condescension. A genuine prize was taken. When they rejected promotion in 2011, it was the correct decision. Kerry hurling wasn’t ready. This time, it is. Villages like Kilmoyley and Causeway might be surrounded by the epicentre of the gaelic football world, but their bias in favour of the sliotar’s ridges over the pigskin has been

established for decades. They are not alone. The men and women that support the game within this enclave, cut off by hilly terrain from the traditional hurling landscape, are every bit as passionate about the sport as the devotees residing in Kilkenny, Tipperary and Cork. Bar the occasional victory like those achieved in the mid-90’s, and an occasional sizzling threat to one of hurling’s elite counties, those supporting the game in the harshest of environments have had little to warm their hands to. The fiercely contested county championship, a thoroughly tribal affair, has been the main focus of the Kerry hurling fraternity for many years. However, the lightbulb flickered tantalisingly throughout 2014, and has finally illuminated the darkest of rooms this year.

Villages like Kilmoyley and Causeway might be surrounded by the epicentre of the gaelic football world, but their bias in favour of the sliotar’s ridges over the pigskin has been established for decades.

Their richly deserved win on Saturday secured a place for Kerry in next year’s Leinster Championship, where they will first test themselves against Offaly, Carlow and Westmeath. It represents an obvious step-up in class from the opposition they have faced in the summer months over the last few years, but survival (which will be attained by all bar the team that finishes bottom of the group) should be well within their grasp. The top two teams in that qualifying group could bag themselves a marquee clash with a team like Galway, Dublin, Wexford or even the mighty Kilkenny in the Leinster quarterfinals, and still have the safety-net of the championship’s backdoor to console them in the likely event of defeat. It’s a prospect to savour, as opposed to a hazing at the hands of a Munster team. Kerry had already managed to win promotion to Division 1B of next year’s National Hurling League, and would warm up for a potential campaign in Leinster with conquests against Limerick, Clare, Wexford, Laois and Offaly. Such a rehearsal would be ideal ahead of a campaign against comparatively inferior opposition from Leinster’s second string.

2014 was a year of relatively rich success A loss to the Ulster team last Saturday would for a hurling team that is driven by a small have surpassed even last year’s Christy Ring pocket of clubs in the northwest of the final in terms of agony. There is a genuine county. Kerry won Division 2A, beating nofeeling amongst Kerry hurling folk that the table opposition like Carlow, Derry, Kildare county currently possesses its strongest and Westmeath along the way. Scandalhurling team for some time, a team that can ously, their triumph was not greeted with represent the county in the Liam McCarthy automatic promotion, and they were forced Cup without being embarrassingly out of to duel with Offaly just one week after its depth. The victory attained last Saturday their draining march to victory in 2A. They was Kerry hurling’s most important for many seriously threatened to humiliate a county years. One hundred and twenty four years, that was the toast of the hurling commuto be exact. nity during the 80’s and 90’s, but their resignation to another moral victory was secured with eventual defeat. A harrowing defeat at the hands of Kildare, a team that had been relegated from the same division that produced Kerry as its winner earlier in the year, threatened to undo all of team’s encouraging progress. It was a harsh lesson, but even victory would not have guaranteed promotion to the Liam McCarthy Cup. The visitors had the better of the early exchanges and took a two point lead after six minutes with two frees by Dara O’Sullivan. Keel’s Thomas Ladden and and Frankie Ahern were starting to dominate midfield. This led to Keel dominating the remainder of the first half. Five points from Gary Sayers, 3 frees, and points from Terry O’Sullivan, Barth Murphy and David Flaherty put Keel 8 points to 2 up. Martin O’Sullivan pointed after a good save from Stephen Cahillane to leave the score at half-time Keel 0-8 Skellig Rangers 0-3 Dara O’Sullivan scored his third free after the restart to narrow the gap to four but three Gary Sayers frees in five minutes had Keel up 11 points to 4 entering the last quarter. Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Hyssop Hyssopus officinalis Family: Lamiaceae Parts used: Aerial parts

Hyssop is a hardy perennial with narrow green leaves and very aromatic blue to mauve flowers, (though sometimes pink or white). Hyssop is native to the Mediterranean region and in Roman times was used against the plague, as a disinfectant and for treatment of minor infections. In some parts of the world it had a spiritual function associated with purification and cleansing sacred places. The hyssop plant has a minty flavour and is an herbaceous semiwood plant, bearing beautiful fragrant flowers, which bees love. It grows wild in the Mediterranean and elsewhere is a common garden plant grown for its fragrance and ornamental value.

Hyssop is used in aromatherapy and the essential oil is effective against most upper and lower respiratory infections due to its strong anti-viral activity. Hyssop is also calming and a few drops of the essential oil in your oil burner will help to relax you and ease any respiratory problems. The recommended dose for hyssop essential oil should never be exceeded as it contains a neurotoxic ketone and the oil is also contraindicated for people prone to epileptic seizures. Medicinally hyssop is great for cold damp conditions both of the respiratory tract and the digestive system. The herb is warming to the lungs and is a prime lung remedy. The herb can therefore be used for conditions, such as, chronic bronchitis, any type of cough and emphysema. Ear nose and throat infections can also be alleviated and a hot infusion of the herb can be taken with the onset of cold and flu symptoms. Combine elderflower with this and you may well stop any cold or flu-like viruses in its tracks. Hyssop is often used in syrups and gargles due to its affinity for the lungs and a simple syrup or tincture of hyssop and mullein, for example, can be used for coughs and asthmatic conditions. Hyssop is also warming to the digestive system and can relieve stomach spasms and nausea type symptoms. Externally the leaves can be applied to bruises alleviating pain and inflammation. Preparation and Dosage: Hyssop can be used as an infusion and in tincture form. As an infusion the drink can be sipped throughout the day for flu and cold like symptoms, taking up to 4-10 grams daily. The tincture can be taken at a dosage of 1-4mls three times a day. Safety Considerations: Avoid hyssop during pregnancy and if hypertension is present.

It is also felt that a greater variety of subjects would be available in the one location. Today, one sees boys and girls winding their way slowly between both schools in hail, rain and snow. There is a dimension of enrichment in their social and personal lives if both are educated together. However, at the moment it appears that parents and teachers are happy with separate schools. If the religious are forced to withdraw I assume the same arrangement will obtain. Looking at the leaking prefabs in the convent and the tightly packed 120 year-old classrooms in the Monastery one would say that two new schools or one large school are needed in Dingle now.

All of this is taking place in An Spud-Puball, a marquee in Ballydavid. We are in definite need for competitors – spud growers in each parish and school to enter parish/school competitions in An Spud-off Mór and brave cooks to do up a special spud dish for the Práta Pláta Competition. An Clár and Information Notice in the panels here contain details of events. Please contact the people listed to enter your spuds or dish. Also, we ask local people and visitors to please come along to parish/ school events to support the good work being done by your local organizers. An enjoyable evening and community get-together is promised at each venue. Of course, we expect a huge crowd of supporters, as usual, to come along to the Final, which this year is being held in the marquee in Ballydavid. On Monday last, we had a great day in the Ballydavid area with the RTE/Rachel Allen filming of her Costal Cooking Adventure programme. Beautiful weather, great scenery and great promotion of An Spud-off Mór and Práta Pláta Competition. This will be broadcast in October by RTE and also in UK and USA. It seems now that the BBC will be filming our activities on the Final day on 28th June. Radio Kerry is doing a special show on it for broadcast later this month. RTE Countrywide is also doing a piece on it. So, lots of coverage, which is very good for the whole area.

Back to Work Family Dividend Question What is the new Back to Work Family Dividend? Answer The Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) scheme aims to help families to move from social welfare into employment. It gives extra financial support to people with qualified children who stop claiming a jobseeker’s payment or a one-parent family payment because they have taken up employment or self-employment.

getting an Increase for a Qualified Adult on your 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 payment for them. However, you must meet the conditions and the Back to Work Family Dividend will be paid to you (as the recipient of the social welfare payment).

BTWFD can be paid with some non-primary social welfare payments such as Child Benefit, Rent Supplement and Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (see citizensinforma-

If you qualify for the scheme you will get a weekly payment for up to 2 years. For the first year in employment you will be paid the equivalent of any Increases for Qualified Children that were being paid on your jobseeker’s or one-parent family payment (up to a maximum of 4 children). Half that amount will be paid weekly for the second year. To qualify, you and all members of your family (including your adult dependant) must sign off all primary social welfare payments. However the Back to Work Family Dividend can be paid with Family Income Supplement (FIS) and is not taken into account in the means test for FIS. It can also be paid if your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant finds work, provided you are

Máirtín Ó Cadhain foilsithe ag Cló Iar-Chonnacht ‘Níl aon amhras ach gurbh é Máirtín Ó Cadhain mórscríbhneoir Gaeilge na linne seo. Mar scríbhneoir, mar mhúinteoir agus mar agóidí d’fhág sé a mharc go soiléir agus go dána ar an saol. Tiomsaithe faoi chlúdaigh an leabhair seo tá cúig cinn déag de na gearrscéalta is fearr uaidh. Ó scéalta tuaithe Chonamara mar atá léirithe in An Braon Broghach agus Cois Caoláire go scéalta cathrach An tSraith ar Lár agus An tSraith dhá Tógáil, éiríonn leis an gCadhnach an daonnacht choiteann is dlúth agus d’inneach dá charachtair uile a chur i leith go teann, fórsúil, liriciúil, ealaíonta. Agus má tá dua féin ag baint le cuid de na scéalta seo a léamh, téann siad chun tairbhe do dhuine ar bith a thabharfaidh fúthu. Mar a dúradh san úrscéal is cáiliúla dá chuid, Cré na Cille: ‘Éistear le mo ghlór! Caithfear éiseacht...’ Is fiú éisteacht leis go fóill.’ - Cló Iar-Chonnacht - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis

DID YOU KNOW...? Sir Ernest Shackleton

took part in the first Antarctic hot air balloon ride while on his first expedition in 1902 with Robert Scott. When Shackleton led his own race to the South Pole in 1908-1909, he took along a motorcar which had been made and donated to him by a company in Scotland. The car was not a success. Its weight was too heavy, and the tires could not get traction on the ice. It was during this expedition that Shackleton's party became the first to climb Antarctica's 12,448-foot Mount Erebus.
