Ventry Regatta - 18-19.07.2015 This year the regatta weekend gets underway on Saturday July 18th with a talk by Breándán Ó Ciobháin, on the U35 submarine that landed Greek sailors in Ventry in 1939. this starts at 1pm at the monument in the village. This will be followed by a treasure hunt, suitable for families on the beach at 3.00 p.m. The fundraising pub quiz will take place in Quinn's pub, at 9.00pm. Sunday is regatta day proper in Ventry although there is much more than naomhóg racing lined up. Onshore diversions are a long standing tradition at Ventry regatta and those who have read Fiche Bliain ag Fás might recall that it was here that a young Muiris O Suilleabháin downed his first pints of porter. The tradition of porter on the beach was still in operation in the early 70's as Ashe's Big Blue Bedford truck attended the main events that took place on the peninsula during the summer months. The Naomhog racing starts at 1.45 pm with the under 18 race followed , at half hourly intervals, by the senior men’s race, under 14, senior women’s, under 12, one man one woman, under 16 and concluding at 5.15 pm with the mixed race. Entries for the naomhog races will be taken at the pier from 1.15 to 1.45pm, and competitors are strongly urged to get their entries in at this time to help the timely running of the event. Meanwhile, the onshore events will be underway on the beach, starting at 1.00 pm with a sandcastle building competition. This is also called beach art competition to encourage those who are shy of being seen with a bucket and spade. The idea is to get creative with anything that can be found on the beach -sand included- and there are prizes for the most artisitic result. Family sports get underway on the beach at 3.00 pm and these will include lots of races and novelty events for children, parents and the generally adventurous. The Cic Fada competition on the beach at 4.30 pm will challenge anyone who thinks they should be playing for Kerry. And after that it is off to the village for more craic and what ever is your pleasure. A feis rince will start at 5.00 pm with reel and jig competitions for young dancers, who are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes. All those of a poetic inclination are invited to warm sharpen their pencils in preparation for a competition of verse, with a theme of “Submarine”. The always highly contested horseshoe-throwing competition will be fought out on the village green at 7.00. We look forward to seeing you there.

Guided Walks On The Dingle Peninsula

If you are planning a visit to the Dingle Peninsula this summer or indeed if you are already here, we would like to interest you in the idea of a guided walk. - NOT SO HARD Stretch your legs on a 2-3 hour easy hike by coastal cliffs along the Wild Atlantic Way where we talk ancient Ireland, the myths, history & local story.

- CHALLENGING Take to the hills. Climb Mount Brandon. Experience the high ground of the Dingle Peninsula. Call Kevin O’ Shea: +353 (0)87 6247230 / +353 (0)87 7903950 www.celticnature.com info@celticnature.com

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 14th July will be “Amy”, a documentary focusing on the life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Despite just two albums to her name Winehouse is one of the biggest music icons in British history. With a voice oft described as a combination of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, she was a pop star with soul; yet her chaotic personal life stole headlines. The film documents the songwriter’s life from her early childhood, to her music career, to her troubled relationships, self-harm, and bulimia nervosa, the controversial media attention, and her downfall via drug and alcohol addiction, all until her untimely death in 2011. Featuring extensive unseen footage and unheard tracks Winehouse had recorded in the years before she died, such as “Moon River” from when Winehouse attended the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2000. The following week on Tuesday 21st July the feature will be the British comedydrama “A Royal Night Out”. Set during V.E. Day in 1945 and starring Rupert Everett and Emily Watson the fun starts as peace extends across Europe and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are allowed out to join the celebrations. There follows a night full of excitement, danger and the first flutters of romance, people are celebrating the end of the war. London overflows with celebration and excess. For the first time they are able to mingle with the teeming crowds ..

Judging Dogs For 20 Years At The West Kerry Agricultural Show Martine Moriarty and Lynne Stratton have judged the dogs at the West Kerry Agricultural Show for 20 years now. To celebrate this they have decided to do something a bit special. The dog that wins “Best in Show” will have it’s portrait painted by Martine and the Reserve Best in Show dog will receive a groom from Muddy Matters, by Lynne. In their capacity as judges the two ladies worked alongside the late Michael O’ Connor and have fond memories of him with his alwaysfriendly demeanour and willingness to give a hand or a word of advice. Martine and Lynne recall that Michael’s favorite dog, outside of his working Collies, was the King Charles Spaniel and he would often try and persuade them to let them win. In the early days the judging was outside, which was lovely if the weather was fine, but there were mad dashes in downpours to find a space inside, so eventually a spot was allocated. The amount of dogs and breed types attending has increased vastly over the last few years and the judging has not been without it’s moments - the megaphone didn’t always work as it should, there were out of control dogs, pooing and weeing dogs, not so happy mothers and more. The duo have learned never to look a child in the eyes because you will be met by a pair of pleading peepers imploring you to pick their pooch. But, in the end nobody goes home empty handed. Martine and Lynne said they have really enjoy the judging it’s been great fun and they cant imagine not doing it. So here’s to a good day and may the best dogs win. Martine is an established local artist and paints local scenery, horses and dogs, you may know her from her gallery It Must Be Dingle, in Gortadubha, Ballyferriter. All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome 2015 marks the end of the four years of commemoration of CRAFT the 150th CENTRE anniversary of the American Civil War. It has received very little attention in Ireland, yet at least 200,000 Irish born men fought in the conflict, and many thousands died. Indeed, there is little doubt that more Kerrymen fought and died in the American Civil War than any other conflict in history, including World War One. The impact of the war was still being felt by many Kerry people until well into the twentieth century. This lecture will examine the stories of some of the Kerry families - many of whom were Famine-era emigrants - who were impacted by the American Civil War. Drawing on neglected primary documents such as widow's pension files, among the resources used to explore their experiences will be newly transcribed letters written by Kerry participants, some of which will be heard for the first time at the presentation. Damian Shiels is an archaeologist and historian. He runs the www.irishamericancivilwar.com website and is the author of The Irish in the American Civil War (History Press 2013). Formerly one of the curatorial team that devised the Soldiers & Chiefs military history exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland, he has published and lectured widely both nationally and internationally on Irish conflict archaeology and Irish military history. Damian is a regular contributor to both television and radio in Ireland; most recently he was invited by the State of Tennessee to act as keynote speaker at events to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.

Family Fun Week in Dingle Richie Williams Following appeals from various parties over the past few months it is proposed to organise a Family Fun Week in Dingle in the period after the Regatta this year. The idea springs from suggestions that families are not well catered for during the busy summer period in West Kerry and the week before the schools reopen is thought to be the best time to organise some events particularly for the younger children. A number of activities have been suggested including Fancy Dress Parade, Pets Show, Painting Competition, Fungi Trips.,Historical Walks, Barbecues, Open Air Disco, Games/Sports Evening. All these suggestions could be easily organised with help from parents and interested parties as the facilities are already in town in places like An Diseart, Town Park, Sportsfield and Turbets Amusements Grounds. Hopefully by the next edition of West and Mid Kerry Live we will have a better programme of events in place and in the meantime would welcome ideas and suggestions and help in putting another mini festival on the calendar here in Corca Dhuibhne. Anyone interested can contact 086-8641340.

CAMP NOTES Brigid O’ Connor Hire A Pro, Auction Hire a Pro Auction in aid of Camp Community Childcare Centre held at The Junction Bar, Camp on Friday night was a resounding success. Our very capable Auctioneer Séan Stepney sold people skills from mowing lawns and Shearing Sheep to lots of handy jobs, even putting his own trendy “necktie” under the hammer to secure a tidy sum of €10, a real bargain for any fashion conscious gentleman ! The music interludes were provided by “Culchie Goes Cool” creating a lovely atmosphere. And band leader Gerard Mulligan even got to sing “Happy birthday” to Frances celebrating her birthday at The Junction Bar on the night ! Everybody had a great night and the auction raised €3000 with more to come in the next week or so. The organisers, Louise, Carol and the parents fundraising committee of Camp Community Childcare Centre were delighted with the night and the proceeds will be put to good use, supporting the top quality childcare services provided at the centre, which is a wonderful facility for all of our children ! Camp Cash Cow Camp Cash Cow, our biggest Annual Fundraiser of the year is on Sunday August 2nd. In Camp Community Sportsfield. It’s a wonderful family Day out with lots and lots of things happening. West Kerry Mental Health ‘West Kerry Mental Health / Cumann Sláinte Intinne Chorca Dhuibhne in association with Mental Health Ireland celebrated the Summer Solstice on World Mental Health Day in the Diseart, Dingle. This is the first year that Mental Health Ireland marked the day across Ireland. The event in Dingle was a low key trial run for future years which proved to be very successful with a good turnout from the community. Speakers Dr Conor Brosnan GP and Irene Ní Fhlannura Nutritional Therapist, Re Nua talked respectively on depression, its causes and support in the community and nutrition to promote mental health. Musical interludes were provided by local musicians and at the lighting of the celebratory candle, Monsignor Pádraig ó Fiannachta read a well chosen poem. Cathy Weldon did a reading of one of her poems in English and Irish. Ilonka, local Yoga teacher brought the festivities to a close as she talked us through a gentle dance to a tune called ‘Willow’ on CD. Celebration Of Light On Sunday evening Camp Community and friends gathered at Garrahies Beach to light candles, reflect and remember ! The music session at the edge of the waves was beautiful. Milo O Brien on Accordeon, Gordon Saunders on Guitar and James Allman playing the flute were accompanied by our local singers led by Nora Rice. Breda Quirke’s opening words of welcome began the readings given by Hazel Evans and Mary Knightly who also concluded the event with words of thanks to everybody. This is a lovely Annual occasion in support of Recovery Haven and well done to Eileen O Shea and friends who organise it every year in Camp. And Sean, Column, Fionán and Cillian Barry’s bonfire provided a nice warm glow that we all needed on such a lovely sunny but windy evening at Garrahies Gap ! CF Walk A total of €970 was collected for the CF walk on June 1st. A big thank you to the people who walked, to those who donated money and the ICA ladies who made the refreshments afterwards.

Farming News

Louis Murchan

New €50M Dairy Equipment Scheme The new TAMS II Dairy Equipment Scheme has opened, which is the second of the new Targeted Modernisation Schemes (TAMS II) to be launched under the new Rural Development Programme 2014 - 2020. This very important Scheme will directly support the development of modern and forward-looking dairy-enterprises on farms across the country. Farmers will have access to the most up-to-date technology to enable them compete in the modern dairy sector and to bring the highest quality product to market An allocation of €50m was being made available under the terms of this Scheme over the full RDP period. The total allocation for the various on farm investment Schemes planned under TAMS II, including the Dairy Equipment Scheme, is €395m over the course of the programme. The Scheme is open to all farmers who meet the general eligibility criteria, offering a standard rate of aid of 40%. The specific areas of investment will include milking machines, milk cooling and storage equipment, water heating and in-parlour feeding systems. All farmers thinking of investing are encouraged to study the terms & conditions carefully to see how the new Scheme could benefit them. All applications must be made on-line, either by the farmer or by an adviser authorised to act on his or her behalf. The facility for farmers and advisers to rapidly link via SMS texting is now available, and the Terms and Conditions of the new Scheme can be found on the Department’s website The online application system will go-live after a week, to allow time for farmers and advisors to familiarise themselves fully with the detail of the new Scheme before drawing up applications. The first tranche of applications will run for three months from the activation of the online system, closing in early October. Department Reports Results Of Epidemiological Investigation Final test results confirm the recent suspect case of BSE to be an isolated case of “classical” BSE in a single animal, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. In line with normal protocols, the Department identified all animals potentially exposed to the BSE agent that caused this incident – those born and reared on the birth-farm one year either side of the birth date of the positive animal, and her progeny. These have been slaughtered, excluded from the food and feed chains, and tested. - The epidemiological investigation has confirmed that: - All 63 cohort animals and 4 progeny slaughtered and disposed of have tested negative for BSE; - The confirmed case is an isolated case in a single animal; - Both the dam and grand dam of the infected animal tested negative for BSE at slaughter, and therefore vertical transmission is not considered to be a factor in this case; -Whilst the grand-dam of the positive animal was imported, this is not of any significance in epidemiological terms No concerns arise regarding the integrity of the commercial feed supply chain or the effectiveness of the feed control systems. In the 2009 and 2010 period, more than 3,800 feed inspections took place, and almost 2,500 feed samples, including 52 from suppliers to the farm on which the positive case was found, were tested for the presence of processed animal proteins. All tested negative for meat and bone meal. Test results from feed currently on the farm are also negative. The investigation has not identified anything to distinguish this case from the other cases of classical BSE that have been seen in Ireland or elsewhere. The identification of classical BSE cases after the implementation of the ban on the feeding of meat and bone meal is not unprecedented. A diminishing number of such cases have been identified in Ireland and in other countries over the years. Major Benefits To Environment To Flow From First Tranche Of Glas Details of the first tranche of applications for GLAS, were recently released and by all accounts, the Department of Agriculture were delighted by the uptake and by the wide variety of actions chosen. GLAS is apparently a huge success and it is clearly going to play a key role in the protection of our rural environment over the new programming period. Nearly 27,000 farmers applied to join the Green Low Carbon Agri-Environment Scheme, or GLAS as it is commonly known, in the first tranche and early indications are that most of these will draw close to the maximum annual payment of €5,000. The Minister welcomed this in particular, as concern had been expressed by some that only a minority of farmers could ever hope to achieve this level of payment. The Minister was delighted to note that these concerns were unfounded. The most popular action was Low Input Permanent Pasture selected by 20,000 farmers. Protection of watercourses was another popular choice by 10,000 farmers, while large numbers also chose a variety of actions designed to protect birds, bees and bats. In fact, actions addressing every 16 West Kerry Live

single objective have been selected by farmers in this first tranche. Some of the highlights identified by Minister Coveney are as follows: • 180,000 ha of permanent pasture will be conserved • 8,000 km of water courses will be protected, • 40,000 ha of endangered bird habitat will be brought under sustainable management • 50,000 ha of other Natura habitat will be protected • 1,300km of new hedgerows will be planted • 2,000 new groves of native trees will be established • 1,000 new orchards of traditional Irish varieties will be planted • 6,000 km of stone walls will be protected • 6,000 new habitats will be created for threatened solitary bee species • 90,000 bird boxes and 80,000 bat boxes will be erected • 2,700 commonages will be brought under new Commonage Management Plans • 3,000 archaeological monuments will be protected • 8,000 ha of wild bird cover will be planted, providing up to 12,000 tonnes of seed for wild birds Applications in respect of just under 2,700 commonages, or well over half of all commonages in the country, have been received. This is a major step towards the establishment of greatly enhanced management regimes for these upland areas. Some 4,000 individual GLAS applications from commonage farmers were received, but another 5,000 commonage farmers are already in AEOS with time left to run on those agri-environment contracts. Sheep Notes: GRASS:- Grass is the cheapest and best feed available on sheep farms. However, managing grass to keep it in a leafy state during June/July is the biggest challenge facing sheep farmers. Encouraging leafy growth and suppressing stem is the key to achieving high levels of animal performance off grass swards. In rotationally grazed swards aim to allow lambs into grass heights of around 8cm and move them on once grass height reaches 6cm (i.e., post grazing sward height of 6cm). For set stocking situations aim to keep grass height at around 7-8cm for the month of July. To maintain grass quality into August/September it is essential to graze out swards properly. As the lambs will be moved on at 6cm it is necessary to get some other stock to graze out the sward fully (i.e., down to 4-5cm). Dry ewes or suckler cows are ideal for this job. If, due to low stocking rates, etc., it is not possible to properly graze out swards after the lambs, they should be topped. Much of the topping carried out on farms is cosmetic as the blades of the topper/mower are set too high. In order to be effective the topping should remove as much stemmy material as possible. The topper should be set to remove all grass above 5cm. REPLACEMENTS:- Weaning time is the best time to select replacements from the flock. Maintaining a closed flock has advantages in terms of reducing the risk of buying in disease. If potential ewe lambs have been identified at birth, then weaning time is the ideal opportunity to go through these and pick out the best ones. However, even where this has not happened, it is still a good idea to go through the ewe lambs at the weaning time and pick off the best ones. It does not matter if they are singles or twins; what is more important is that their dam did a good job rearing them. It is also important to make sure that enough replacements are kept. As a general rule 25% is a good number as it allows for culling of some inferior hoggets later on. Head Scoops And Yard Lights Most Popular Items In Safety Scheme The most common items approved to date under the Farm Safety Scheme are head-scoops to prevent cattle from moving their heads while in a crush, and yard lights. He said these two items were included in 46% and 43% of approvals respectively. The Farm Safety Scheme, with a budget of €12.2m, received 6,299 applications. To date 4,618 applications had been approved, with an average of four items per approval. Of the remaining applications, over 800 are ineligible and the others are being processed as quickly as possible, allowing for issues that have been queried with farmers. Under the scheme all work must be completed and a payment claim lodged with the Department by the August 31. Investment in farm safety will continue to be a priority for the Department. Under the new Animal Welfare, Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme the full range of items available under existing Farm Safety Scheme will continue to be supported, along with an increased range of fixed safety items, such as fixed cattle crushes. The scheme will be launched over the summer as part of the TAMS II round of on-farm investment schemes. In addition, as part of all of the new TAMS Schemes it will be mandatory for all applicants to have completed a minimum half-day farm safety course before they can claim grant-aid. We had Práta Pláta Competition for the first time. It was oversubscribed and was closed off a week before the event. 15 contestants took part, presenting a wide variety of spud dishes. The judging panel of 6 'experts' came up with these results: - 3rd place: Phil Uí Brosnacháin. - 2nd Place: Kerry O’ Connor - Winner: Seáinín Mac Eoin, with a stunning presentation. Given that it was our first year, it was a tremendous success, matching that of An Spud-off Mór. An Spud-off Mór had the 9 winners of parish and schools competitions competing. The panel of 6 judges, which included two guest judges, Miss Kerry, Máiréad Breathnach and Simon Reeve of BBC, who filmed the proceedings, decided as follows:

Bhí slua mór lucht leannúna againn ar lá breá grianmhar agus an áit go léir ag féachaint go h-iontach. Agus gach éinne ag baint sult agus taithneamh as. It was also a great day out for kids with a Bouncy Castle and facepainting. Ollphuball an Phráta worked very well and is likely to be the future venue. Miss Kerry put in trojan work as judge in An Spud-off Mór, presenter of prizes in both Práta Pláta Competition and An Spud-off Mór and encouraged the crowd to donate generously to our selected charity, Kerry Hospice. Almost €1000 was collected. Huge support from our sponsors and media partners was fully appreciated and we thank them all for that. We would certainly like to thank WKL for the extensive coverage, which enables us reach or key target audience.

D’aithníos an duilleoigín mar gur cuimhin liom tor de a bheith ag an gcrosaire ceithre rian mar a raghfá ar dheis ar do shlí go doras tosaigh Choláiste Íde. Bhí ladhar de sna duilleoa seo ag Danny a fuair sé óna chairde in Urt mar a raibh sé féin agus an criú tar éis a naomhóg a fhágaint go bhfille siad arís an bhliain seo chugainn agus Santiago a shroisint, le cúnamh Dé. Shrois an naomhóg an baile sin tráthnóna Dé Sathairn. Cheangail an criú leis an gcé í. D’fhágadar a raibh acu inti gan aon imní orthu go ngoidfí aon rud aisti. Amach le Danny aisti leis féin agus seo é i dtreo an tséipéil a chonaic sé tamall uaidh. Bhí an tAifreann díreach thart ach bhuail sé leis an sagart paróiste a dúirt leis go mbeadh Aifreann ar maidin lá arna bhárach i séipéal eile aige tamall ó bhaile agus d’fhéadfadh sé teacht ina theannta mar bhí sé deacair teacht air. Bhí slacharáil Bhéarla ag an sagart agus bhí cúpla focal Bascaise ag Danny. Shocraíodar bualadh le chéile ar a naoi ag an séipéal mór. Chuireadar chun bóthair agus boithríní trí phaiste bocht den bhaile. D’iarr an sagart ar Danny caint ghairid a thabhairt tar éis a sheanmóra féin i mBéarla agus gcuirfeadh sé féin Bascais uirthi dá phobal. Thoiligh Danny. Nuair a bhí a homaile tugtha aige ghlaoigh chuige aníos ar Danny agus chuir in aithne don bpobal é, oilithreach ó Éirinn a bhí ag déanamh turas Santiago de Compostella i mbád beag de réir a chéile. Thosnaigh Danny le cur síos ar an gceangal a bhí riamh ag Éire le tuaisceart na Spáinne; fiú de réir a seanchais gur chaith na Gaeil tamall sa Ghaillís ar a slí go hÉirinn. Bhain Danny feidhm as focail Bhascaise anois agus arís—gheibheadh sé bualadh bas nuair a dheineadh. Ach, a dúirt sé, go raibh ceangal speisialta idir é féin agus an baile ina raibh sé ag an bpointe sin; gur chuaigh bád iascach míol mór a tógadh ar an mbaile, An Santa Rosa, a ghabh an rí Pilib le saighdiúirí a iompar san Armada go tóin poill i mBealach an Bhlascaeid ná fuil ach míle nó dhó farraige óna áit dúchais. Chuaigh sé i bhfeidhm ar a lucht éiste agus tar éis an Aifrinn d’fhanadar ag caint leis agus thugadar timpeall go tithe bídh agus dí é agus dúradar leis go gcaithfeadh sé turas a thabhairt ar an músaeum farraige lá arna bhárach mar gur dócha gur ansiúd a tógadh an Santa Rosa. Dhein Danny rud orthu lá arna bhárach. Níorbh aon ghnáthmhúsaeum é mar bhí obair ar siúl istigh ann. Bhí báid den tseandéanmh á dtógaint istigh ann. Bhí go leor eolais ar na báid a tógadh fadó ina gcáipéisí ann. Ina measc bhí an Santa Rosa luaite. Bhí an criú le heitilt go Baile Átha Cliath an tráthnóna san. Fad a bhíodar ag socrú cé a bheadh i bhfeighil a naomhóige agus cá mbeadh sí go dtí an bhliain seo chugainn bhailigh, slua le chéile agus réitíodh mórshiúl tríd an mbaile don gcriú. Bhí ceol amhráin agus rince acu sarar bhailíodar leo le bheith in am dá n-eitleán a bhí tamall ó bhaile.

News from the Díseart

I hope to publish a fine volume by the author of Flora Chorca Dhuibhne later this year. It is a substantial volume, 900 or so octavo pages with about four colour photos on every page. I have on loan a bigger volume still, Ireland’s Generous Nature (subtitled The Past and Present Uses of Wild Plants in Ireland) by the renowned Peter Wyse Jackson (born in Camp). This handsome volume I have managed to get on loan and read to be better equipped to publish our next book Tuir agus Crainn whose author is reffered to frequently by Wyse Jackson. The cuisine of Dingle and Corca Dhuibhne in general is already benefitting from knowledge of our ‘generous nature.’ These books have fascinated me by their science and lore. I hope to be able to enjoy Tuir agus Crainn later on in less stressful conditions. Our next publication is Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad 2015 which should be available in two weeks time. I am hoping to have a new editor for the 2016 issue. I have already some major contributions awaiting. In the meantime our prayer garden is gradually taking shape in spite of somewhat unfavourable weather. But the numbers coming in to enjoy our internal art wonders show a big increase. Our bilingual creative writing workshop is due to start at the beginning of July. Present members should encourage others to join. However it is best to check before coming in case that it has not yet started. Tel. (066)9152 476; (066)91 50000.

Tough as Leather The Story Of Sporting Legend John Lenihan le Con Dennehy

TRY OUR WILD ATLANTIC PLATTER

‘‘Tough as Leather’, written by award winning Kerry journalist and photographer Con Dennehy, is the fascinating story of Kerry athlete John Lenihan who lives in one of the most isolated and weather beaten parts of Kerry, the Stacks Mountain. As a child he attended school for just 5 years and was educated at home by his grandmother. His story is one of a lonely childhood, with no friends and little interaction with his peers. A supplement in the national newspapers in 1976, ‘Be Active, Be Alive’, inspired him to start a life of fitness and good health that would culminate with victory at the 1991 World Mountain Running Championships in Switzerland, the only Irishman to win this title. His story, tracing his life from 1960 to 2015, is one of courage, inspiration, sadness and the ability to take on the challenges of life despite his isolated childhood.’ - Róisín Publications - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis

Sunburn, premature aging, wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer share a common culprit – free radicals, which are highly unstable molecules, in this case, caused by both UVB and UVA, which damage the DNA of cells, leading to impairment, mutations and cell death. Antioxidants are the antidote to free radical damage. Eating foods high in antioxidants is one way to protect ourselves and minimize their destruction of our cells. We naturally produce some antioxidants to protect us from free radicals but most of our protection comes from the food we eat. Interestingly, the antioxidants most effective against harm caused by the sun are in fresh fruit and vegetables that are also at their best during the Summer. Rich coloured fruits, black and purple berries, vivid greens, red and yellow fruits and vegetables contain an antioxidant group called carotenoids including betacarotene, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein and lycopene. These hard working antioxidants are the best at protecting us from sun damage and are mostly concentrated in the skin and the eyes, where sun damage occurs. Every meal during the Summer should include some of these foods, from blueberries and blackcurrants in the morning, fresh salads of green leaves and tomatoes at lunch and bright green peas, spinach, chard and baby carrots for evening meals. Consuming fresh, seasonal and locally sourced produce will ensure you are getting the highest levels of antioxidants available in Nature at the right time for the right reasons. The SPF (sun protection factor) on sunscreens is only a measure of protection from UVB light. Although, many sunscreens offer combined UVB and UVA protection nowadays, it requires more chemicals to reach down into the skin’s layers to shield against UVA. As prudent as it may seem to wear sunscreen at all times it is important to know that blocking out UVB reduces vitamin D production by 99%. An ideal level of protection from both UVB and UVA can be provided with moderate use of sunscreen, preferably a natural, non-toxic sunscreen that uses a shield of minerals (usually zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide) which reflects UVB and UVA away from the skin at the surface. For added protection, supplement your Summer diet with an antioxidant formula, rich in carotenoids, if working or spending a lot of time outdoors. On very hot days, minimize your exposure to the sun’s rays from midday to 4pm. UVA can penetrate glass, cloud and haze so make sure that your head, skin and eyes are protected even on dull days. The sun has been around for more than six billion years and is a vital source of heat, light, energy, joy and sustenance. It is central to our physical and emotion health and wellbeing. It is highly unlikely that 22 West Kerry Live

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is commonly referred to as UVA, UVB and UVC. The difference between each of these is their wavelength. UVC has the shortest and doesn’t get past the Earth’s atmosphere so no worries there! UVB is longer and more intense and is noticeably felt as heat on the surface of our skin. UVB is responsible for tanning and sunburn and the damage it causes is normally to the outer layer of the skin. UVA has the longest wavelength and is capable of penetrating the skin’s surface and reaching the deeper layers of the skin. Up until now, most skin damage was attributed to UVB light but continuing studies have revealed that UVA, while not responsible for burning, causes premature aging, wrinkles and age spots through loss of moisture, elasticity and structural damage to the inner layers. We have been warned of the link between UVB and skin cancer, as most skin malignancies begin on the skin’s surface but again, research has revealed that UVA can also wreak havoc underneath the skin’s outer layer manifesting in cancer spread and other mutations occurring in the deeper layers of the skin. Think UVB for Burn and UVA for Aging. As scary as all this sounds, no need to dive under the duvet just yet, good news is on the way!

Looking out the window at a blustery, damp and misty evening, it is almost comical that I have chosen to write about the role nutrition plays in protecting us from the damaging effects of the sun! The silver lining surrounding these low lying clouds is that the sun will come out eventually or for the fortunate ones a sunshine holiday is on the agenda this Summer. Whatever the case, brushing up on your UVA,B,C’s can only be a good thing!

Love Drives Out Fear -Pastor Shaun Abrahams MA.Th

Sunday Service at 10:30 am - Wednesday Bible Study 7:30pm Chapel on the Hill, Market Street, Killorglin Tel: 085 1541673/085 1101113 E: info@killorglinbaptistchurch.com

1 John 4:18 ‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.’ We simply cannot escape the reality of fear. Perhaps you are anxious about your financial status, your children, health or your own sense of happiness. Some fear is good. For one, we know that the scriptures teach that a healthy fear of God is essential for true wisdom and knowledge. We know that a right reverence of God will protect the Christian from a multitude of evils. (Proverbs 1:7). Secondly fear is also the alarm bell that God has given us to recognise danger so we can protect ourselves in a wicked and sinful world. King David often fled for his life when danger was imminent. Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt to protect the Lord Jesus. Thirdly, fear can cause a response that renders us defenceless and feeling hopeless. Often I talk to Christians who have serious panic attacks and fears or phobias of some sort or the other. Some struggle with a fear of failure, others with inadequacy or insecurity. As a husband and father with a spouse who has gone through cancer on three separate occasions, I have learnt as a Christian to respond to fear with trust and faith in a loving God. I have also learnt that reacting with sacrificial love by outwardly focussing on caring for the needs of others is the ‘way out’ of my hopeless response to fear. The apostle John makes a profound statement when he writes ‘love drives out fear’. The love John means here is sacrificial, selfless and focused on the needs of others. This kind of love is the distinctive feature of biblical Christianity. God is love and the ultimate demonstration of His love is demonstrated in the sacrificial death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Christians are simply those who personally trust in that sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ. The love of Christ becomes both the example and the motivation of the type of love Christians are to demonstrate in fearful situations. Learning to love others ‘drives out’ the fear of whatever personal loss and danger we are anticipating. Fear that renders us permanently inoperative as Christians and stifles our ability to worship God is not a healthy fear. When fear threatens to shut us down we naturally go into a self- preservation mode. It is then that we must respond and consider the question ‘Am I trusting God’. The prophet Isaiah writes ‘Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of The Lord and rely on his God’. Resting in the love of Christ will set the Christian free from a crippling fear. Trusting in an Almighty God in the midst of a fearful situation is the ‘doorway’ to experiencing grace and strength from a Loving Father. Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Sunset Kit Carson & the Carnival Queens. Carl O’ Flaherty There was little doubt in any youngsters mind but that the Dingle carnival was a dream come true. There was variety aplenty for young and old with a comprehensive programme to cater for all tastes. In truth we were spoilt for choice. The races, regatta, agriculture show, sea angling competition, festival queens, fancy dress parades and talent competitions were fitted into a two week jamboree during the first two weeks of August. The first carnival was held in 1949. Its specific aim was to collect funds to develop the newly purchased Páirc an Ághasaigh. As years passed by the aims and programme content changed to serve the needs of the community. From these humble beginnings grew the seeds of the present tourist culture and industry. Exiles were encouraged to return home for annual holidays and people were enticed into Dingle from the hinterland area as well as other Kerry towns. Thousands of people attended both the races and the regatta which was no mean achievement in an era where private transport was very limited. The carnival reached its peak during the mid-sixties. Children have a totally different view about what is interesting in comparison with adults. Consequently, my earliest memories of the festival revolve around the children’s events. Large crowds lined both sides of Main St. for the soapbox derby. How I longed to be big and have my own rocket styled soapbox bombing its way past Benner’s Hotel and heading for the finishing line at the Small Bridge. In the meantime, I watched the older boys vying to be the Sterling Moss of the Dingle Grand Prix! At ten years of age I was no longer satisfied in being a spectator. I was determined to participate where possible and sample the glory of success. I made my debut in 1964 in the children’s fancy dress parade. I hadn’t a clue about which character I should dress up as and just kept nagging at my mother until she relented. In desperation she rustled up a straw hat, a pair of sunglasses, a toy gun and a notice written on a piece of cardboard which was slung nonchalantly around my neck. President John F. Kennedy had recently been assassinated and my character was the president’s assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. My brother was burdened with Oswald’s assassin and dubbed with the name Jack Ruby. We left Grey’s Lane both in fear and excitement and headed for Paddy Devane’s fish yard in Green Street from where the parade was to begin. We had no sooner reached the top of the lane when my brother discarded his quickly assembled outfit and headed for the sanctuary of Greany’s sweet shop. The dual act was a beaten docket, the assassin without the murderer and so were my humble chances of recognition! I slinked into the parade and was relieved to see my classmate Gerry Curran was also a contestant. He was joined by his younger sister and brother. Their characters represented local Irish heroes. Gerry was wearing a black hat and had a pipe in his mouth. He was supposed to be An t-Oileánach(Tomas O Criomhthain) the Islandman. His sister Anne had a black shawl thrown over her shoulder and was cast as Peig Sayers while younger sibling Patrick completed the Celtic icons as an Seabhac (Padraig O Siochrú), the writer of our school book Jimín. I knew in my heart that I hadn’t a snowballs hope of winning a prize and I was amply rewarded with a fist full of gallon sweets from committee member Frank Carroll. The following evening I set off again in search of adventure. It was an innocent age when ten year olds and younger could wander the streets without fear of harm. The whole town knew who we were. Like mallard ducklings, we were all members of a giant crèche where friends, relations and neighbour’s kept an eye out for us in case we came in harm’s way. The donkey derby was about to start and there was great excitement and hullabaloo. The donkeys assembled at the starting line at the Quayside, between the Gas Shed and The Garraí. The scene was a chaotic delight! Young and old were at their wits ends trying to persuade the beasts of burden to act out of character. Innocently, I thought that the braying donkeys from Lispole didn’t like the donkeys from the west and both sets seemed to be giving the townie donkeys a hard time. Such nonsense! I failed to appreciate the presence of rearing stallions and obliging mares. The designated route was to follow the road to O’ Keefe’s Chemist Shop, veer right to the Holy Ground and head to the finishing line outside the courthouse at 24 West Kerry Live

the end of the Mall. However, just as order had been restored all hell broke loose. A man with a white handkerchief raised hand and dropped it suddenly to signal the start but the donkeys completely ignored his bidding. He may as well had a white sheet over his head with the confused donkeys, confounded jockeys and general consternation. Chaos reigned supreme! After a series of false starts the race finally began. A donkey cantered down the pier while another turned fully around and headed home towards Ventry. Two others refused to budge and another rogue took an alternative route across the tracks to Pickards shed. Such mayhem! My father loved Irish proverbs and loved to quote “Ní feídir capall rás a dhéanamh as asal” (You can’t make a racehorse out of a donkey.) Eventually, a few animals realized that the least line of resistance was to set off in the right direction. They were followed by a vagabond crowd of adults, youngsters and howling dogs. What a magic occasion I thought to myself! I had a keen interest in the proceedings as my sister Mary Mazz was racing. She was after getting a lend of Neddy Fitzgerald’s (The Mall) old donkey. About ten donkeys set off at a wild gallop around the town. The scene was similar to a Wild West rodeo as riders, spectators and animals joined in a loud racket of screaming bawling and braying. Mary Mazz was well in contention as they rounded Hudson’s Bridge and headed hell for leather over the Mall to the finishing line at the Small Bridge. Neddy’s donkey was an old rogue and was in familiar territory. Dramatically, at the memorial statue adjacent to O’ Connor’s garage he veered abruptly to the right and didn’t stop or start until he reached the safety of his nearby stable. A big lad called Terry O’Connor from the Colony was the first to cross the finishing line a short neck ahead of Thomas Curran. I ambled my way home but soon my attention was drawn to John Quilter’s voice coming from the loud speaker “One of the highlights of Féile an Daingin will be the visit of Sunset Kit Carson and his wild west show at Paírc an Ághasaigh. My heart jumped with joy. The opportunity to see a real cowboy! That night I couldn’t sleep with the excitement. He finally arrived and my luck was in. The entrance fee to the show was half a crown, but the children’s band from Grey’s Lane were invited to parade the town with the cowboy hero. Furthermore, the carnival Queen Ms Bridie Hussey (Dykegate St.) and her two attendants, Kathleen O’Shea and Nuala Devane were also in attendance. We were especially proud of the honour because Nuala was from Grey’s Lane but more importantly in my view, the band gained free access to the show. A band practice was quickly organised at the top of the lane. The O’Connor’s, O’Sullivan’s, Cashen’s, Devane’s, Kavanagh’s and O’Flaherty’s were quickly put through their tunes. I hadn’t a note in my head and had great difficulty in playing the scale not to mind Faínne Geal an Lae. However, good luck was about to strike. They needed a few more kids to bulk up the formation. Tommy Kavanagh, neighbour and local postman was at his wits end trying to tutor the band which comprised of button accordion, harmonicas and tin whistles. Danny Graham and I were handed two tin whistles and placed out of harm’s way. We were instructed to twiddle our fingers with the rhythm of the music but under no circumstances were we to blow into the whistles. Once we gained entrance into the field Danny and I deserted the Grey’s Lane symphonic and threw our whistles into the air. Our careers as session musicians had both started and finished on that fateful march. Very soon our eyes were focused on the star of the show. Sunset was dressed in an immaculate white suit and donned a black hat with a matching pair of steel capped cowboy boots. He demonstrated his wonderful horsemanship with some amazing acts. He stood on the horses back as it galloped along and did a sequence of skips, hops, flips and flops. It seemed as if he had fallen to the ground but he recovered his balance and manoeuvred himself under the horse’s tummy and emerged on the other side before bucking himself back into the saddle. Phew! He continued the show with a series of lasso tricks and a knife throwing exhibition. Surely, I thought this man must have killed every Indian in the Wild West. The carnival Queen was beautifully dressed but we had only eyes for our neighbour Mary. Now she was part of the show. She was seated on a chair on the back of a lorry bedecked with banners and flags. A selection of colourful balloons were attached around her head and Kit began to shoot them one by one. Did anyone wonder how Mary felt?

www.westkerrylive.ie

She was like a sitting duck while Kit went through his routine. The highlight of the performance was yet to come. One final balloon remained to be burst. Kit turned his back and rested the gun on his shoulder. He peered into a small mirror similar to a rear view mirror in a Morris Minor. This was a trick to beat all tricks and needed a steady hand, a keen eye and deadly marksmanship. There followed a loud drumroll and the audience held their collective breaths as our hero squeezed the trigger. What if he misses and hit’s the beautiful girl I pondered! In an instant the shot rang out and the balloon fell victim to his acute accuracy. We clapped like mad as our hearts resumed to beat at their normal pace. Better was to follow, the fastest gun competition was about to begin. About thirty young hopefuls were divided into two lines and competed against each other. Myself and the lads had been practising all morning. I was really fired up and against all the odds I managed to reach the final. My adrenalin was at all-time high. My opponent was a very young aspiring gun slinger from the Holy Ground named Danno O’Keeffe. He had flowing locks of white hair and a determined gaze. Kit Carson stood close at hand and acted as judge. The world (or indeed my world) stood still as we fought out the gunfight at Paírc an Ághasaigh corral. Whoever won the best of three draws would be the undisputed fastest gun of the West. Kit Carson fired a shot and I instantly drew my gun. I won hands down and Danno was dead meat. My name was called out over the public address system. Imagine that! My own name on the loud speaker. I felt ten foot high. I could see the photographer from The Kerryman was waiting anxiously to take my photograph. Yes, I was a superstar, maybe Kit Carson might ask to join the show. The same stars must have dazzled my brain because Danno outgunned me in the next two draws. I was condemned to Boot Hill or Cnoc a’ Chairn and my career as a wild western hero was gone for evermore. Danno is still blazing a trail of glory in his railway themed bar at the quayside in Dingle. I soon recovered from my gun slinging debacle and fall from grace. Almost immediately new challenges beckoned. Dingles first Agriculture Show was scheduled to begin. It was the feast day of The Assumption, 15 August 1967. There was great excitement among our farming customers in the bar. Although I was pig ignorant about country matters my curiosity was aroused from ear wigging their conversations. I decided to head up to the sports field. Children were allowed free access, however myself and the lads still exercised our God given right to jump over the boundary wall and to gain admittance without leave or licence. The show offered the town boys (townies) an opportunity to mix with our country brethren. Although we pretended to be much more sophisticated then the country cabóges we soon forgot our high notions and were genuinely attracted to the multitude of attractions……….home baking, mouthwatering brown bread, vegetables of every conceivable variety, hens, ducks, geese, cows, bulbs and bullocks. There were countless pens of sheep and surely we thought the rams with the biggest and curly horns would win the top prize. We watched the sheep shearing competitions with awe and felt sympathy for the one who got a nick from the hand held shears. I really enjoyed the sheep dog trials especially when an excited dog disobeyed his demented owner. The sheep were scattered all over the field while the dogs handler whistled with ferocity and bawled out commands…….lie down, sit, sit, go on, move out, easy ,easy, buail amach, teíg abhaile which could be heard in far off Annascaul. Other attractions included the slow bicycle race, the long jump and running sprints but my favourite event was the tug of war. After incredible exertions, grunting and heaving the giants from Garfinny/ Lispole held sway. I knew a number of the local farmers and tried to impress my townie friends. I was delighted when Michael Griffin (Kilfountain) asked me to mind his horse. He was a giant of an animal and he totally ignored my bidding. I tugged the reins sharply to the right and then to the left just to show him who was the boss. So far my only experience of farm animals was to walk to the Grove with my uncle Benny Moriarty and feed the hens and give the pet lamb his bottles. Almost immediately the horse began to tear at the grass and ignore my pleadings. A dark cloud hung over the town and soon a heavy shower of rain descended on the field. People scattered in all directions to avail of the limited shelter. I was almost drowned wet and was very tempted to abandon my charge. There was a large tent nearby. It contained rows of tables with cakes, sponges, and apple tarts. The top table was loaded with

majestic trophies. I headed towards the tent. I pulled and dragged my unwilling accomplice and took refuge in the lea of the tent. A large crowd were in a huddle battling for a little shelter. Suddenly and without warning disaster struck. Some good for nothing lúdramán had seized the moment and given the unfortunate horse an almighty whack on its rump. The horse bolted in my direction. I held on to the reins for dear life but to no avail. The frenzied capall didn’t halt until it was half ways down the tent. People began shouting and roaring “Who owns that horse, grab him quick before he wrecks the place….. for Christ sake will somebody grab his reins before he kills a child”. A long beautifully adorned table with teapots, cups, saucers, buns, cakes and other delicacies took a direct hit. Next the trophy table began to wobble. There was utter consternation and it seemed as if the heavens were falling in. I quickly opted for self-preservation. I spotted a wafer thin gap in the tent and Houdini-like managed a daring like escape. I jumped over the wall into the dole field and didn’t stop until I reached the safety of Grey’s Lane. Michael Griffin still owes me two bob minus whatever damages ensued. The wheel of life is constantly turning. I didn’t dare venture to another show for exactly twenty years. The event was held on its usual date the feast day of the Assumption 15th August. I was home on holidays with our first born child. She was twelve weeks old. My sister Eithne insisted in entering her in the bonny baby show. I hadn’t any great enthusiasm as I entered the new venue in the brewery field. Almost immediately I began to wander among the various categories of animals, vegetables and side shows. Committee members Derry Murphy and Micheal O’Connor ( Knocknahow) welcomed me to the show. Micheal enlightened me about the original show in 1964 and he explained to me the difference between the cattle categories. Been a typical townie I was baffled and confused but I fully appreciated Micheal’s enthusiasm. An hour slipped by and I became engrossed in the sheep dog trials. Such great entertainment! Then I heard Paddy Browne make an announcement which caught my attention. “......and this years winner of the baby show is a young Dub named Dearbhla O Flaherty……” Local life stock, local produce, local people, local characters and well organised by the local committee. Long may the Dingle Agriculture show continue. - carloflaherty@gmail.com

Provincial Championships still matter. Even to Kerry and Cork. Tadhg Evans That rarest of things. A delighted reaction to a football championship match. Stranger still, a game that managed to relegate the hurling clash that followed to the shade. The contents were all there. Atmosphere, meaning, skill, controversy, reaction. It may not go down as a bona fide classic, but it was certainly a very fine game. For twenty years, Killarney has not seen a Kerry defeat in a game of consequence. On Sunday, they were nearly felled by the old enemy. They probably should have been. If Cork’s nickname has come to be seen as something of an irony in recent years, Sunday’s rebellion brought meaning to that title again. Their response to a relentless critique of their worth was rebellious, skilled and exciting. The discussions conjured by the championship of 2015 have so far been dominated by an appetite for revamp. That shouldn’t change after Sunday’s excellent occasion, and the recent probe for suggestions by the GAA itself means that it most likely won’t. The game did however provide the most compelling and contemporary argument yet for maintaining the provincial championships as part of any makeover that now looks inevitable to take place. Cork and Kerry have won over a century’s worth of provincial titles between them, leading many to suggest that regional competition is of little value to either of them. Sunday’s game represented a boisterous rebuttal of that claim, perhaps best expressed by its last meaningful action. Fionn Fitzgerald’s wondrous equalizer was not greeted with indifference by the Kingdom’s supporters. Martin Carney theorized that courage, bottle and balls were the ingredients required for such a kick, but the absence of will to rescue a draw would have left all his baking in shite. Less attractive was the panicked dive of Brian O’Driscoll to meet the ball, but all the same attributes could be credited to Cork’s half back. Some of his counterparts even dropped to the turf in Killarney in response to the final whistle. This was an occasion that mattered. Many, myself included, have recently advocated the introduction of a Champions League system, with the provincial championships

cut adrift from the search for Sam. I might just have been wrong. A further clobbering for the provincial championships, institutions in their own right, would be regressive rather than progressive. We need a meaningful second tier, we need a revamp, but we also need provincial competitions of worth. The reaction by Cork supporters to Sunday’s penalty decision tells us that these championships retain relevance.

“Martin Carney theorized that courage, bottle and balls were the ingredients required for such a kick, but the absence of will to rescue a draw would have left all his baking in shite.” The Jim McGuinness proposal suggested a sixteen team championship made up of the top eleven league teams, the ‘tier two’ winners and the four provincial champions was the most well intended yet. But it isn’t perfect. In the highly likely event of the provincial championships being won by teams already qualified through their league form, McGuinness suggests that the final four invitations should also be administered through league placing. It’s hard enough to imagine a Division Two team winning a provincial championship, let alone a lowly soldier of Division Four. The provincial competitions have already diminished in terms of net worth, but they retain considerable value. Certainly enough to sustain them. The McGuinness proposal, though certainly touching on the correct tuning, would be fatal to the four crowns. Perhaps awarding championship qualification points based on both league and regional form would be enough to sustain the provincial championships while boosting the league’s merit. McGuinness came close, but his lungs needn’t fear any cigar. A complete scrapping of the provincial championships wouldn’t deny us the genius of the irrepressible of Colm O’Neill, the constant threat from Dublin’s line-up, or the clinical game plans dreamt up by the malevolent minds in Donegal. What it would perturb is the near-annual dance between Kerry and Cork in the grassy ballrooms of Killarney and the Páirc. It would kill the passion conjured by each and every game in the Ulster Championship. We’d have never

had the agony of Louth supporters robbed of the 2010 Delaney Cup, or the eulogizing by Leitrim fans of their team of ‘94. The provincial championship are not without fault, but they’re not without soul. The summer would be never be as colourful again.

Camphill News Betsie Konink It was at the end of May that we last wrote an update of our community and a lot has happened since. In the beginning of June we saw Katie and Ann Marie go off to Dublin to take part in the woman’s marathon and then the weekend after that 7 of us walked for 3 days on the Kerry way. A great experience, we had such a wonderful time together and to see how each one was helping each other over the more difficult part was really special. Now we hope to walk another stretch later in the year. Then the weekend after was our Open Day. We had beautiful weather and the day was well supported. Thank you all for coming and for helping us to paint a beautiful mural at the back of our new workshop. And at the end of the month around the St. Johns Festival on the 24th, we had a cultural week about the elements; earth, water, air and fire. We had painting and music and nature groups and a great St. Johns fire. Now it is getting busy in the garden, the gooseberries are almost ripe and the elderflowers are blossoming and the potatoes flowering, also the weeds grow really well. Everything is a bit late this year because of the cold weather but hopefully July will be a bit warmer. The new house is also slowly progressing, due to the ever chancing HIQA requirements there are at times delays but well we are getting there. And we did get the change of use for the houses in town so we will be getting the keys soon and can then start to make the houses ready for community living. On the fundraising front it has been an excellent couple of months: first in May the Cycle challenge for which we helped with the catering and raised €1500, then the Dingle woman’s mini marathon which raised €452, the children and teachers of the school in Ventry came with a cheque of €500, the women’s marathon in Dublin raised €162.5 and the open day raised €2,276 and last weekend the Church collection in Annascaul raised €178.84. Thank you all, fundraisers and donators, for your time and generosity. This community could not exist without your help and support.

Dingle Tidy Towns News Richie Williams The recent changeable weather conditions have inspired all the flowers, shrubs, plants and weeds to start growing at an unusually fast pace thus requiring more attention from gardening enthusiasts. The Tuesday Work Evenings continue meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. Unfortunately the turnout has been poor so far this year so we appeal for more help as it is very difficult to even do the regular maintenance let alone start new projects with our few loyal civic minded supporters. The new timber flower boxes at the rear of the Cinema add a nice touch to an area taken over by Japanese Knotweed in the past few years. The proposed new flower beds in the green area at the rear of the Charthouse Restaurant are underway and should be planted within a few weeks. The gates at the entrance to the Mart from the Spa Road have been painted as have the two small buildings nearby. Oliver Phair has been doing great work recently in the Spa Road, Grove Park and Cullinagh Road areas all of which badly needed maintenance. Some of the more successful towns in the county have been using the local press and radio to urge their business outlets to keep their properties neat and tidy and make a better business environment for locals and tourists alike. We note that some of the business outlets in Dingle are making a great effort in this regard but sadly some do not appear to take any interest in the external parts of their properties resulting in weed growth and litter and a general ugly appearance . We appeal once again through the kind offices of West and Mid Kerry Live to all our citizens to take a more active part in the affairs of Dingle Tidy Towns so hoping to see more bodies on the streets in the weeks ahead.!!!.

Oddsocks Set For Dingle Gig

Dublin based funk/rock act Oddsocks return to Dingle on July 16th for a very special show in MCarthy’s. Originally coming from Sligo the band have developed a unique sound over the past 5 years, creating a music style that is rich in soul and vocal harmonies which they describe as Rhythm and Groove. Funky guitars, stacked vocal harmonies and vintage piano sounds colour their tracks, with complex arrangements proving that these boys are as dedicated to the craft of songwriting as they are to playing a dynamite live show. The band have kicked off their Summer Tour in the run up to the release of a brand new record this Autumn. Earlier this year Oddsocks released their Live In Whelans album and now fans can look forward to a collection of funky new tunes and a brand new high energy performance. Doors 9pm, Admission €5

With Ted Creedon The article below is taken from the Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin in 1985.

Seán Mcbride To Unveil Tomás Ashe Memorial Seán McBride, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Lenin Prize, will unveil a memorial to Tomás Ashe at Kinard, Lispole, on Saturday, July 27th next. This is to be the highlight of a programme of events being organised to pay tribute to one of Ireland's best loved patriots who was born one hundred years ago. But Ashe was more than a patriot. He was an idealist, a tireless worker, teacher, scholar, poet and musician. He was a dreamer and a man of action but, essentially, a man who believed in this country being in control of its own destiny. In 1916 he commanded an Irish Volunteer Force which engaged a force of Crown police in Ashbourne, Co. Meath, as part of The Rising. Eleven policemen died and Ashe was sentenced to death, later commuted to penal servitude for life. He served time in Dartmoor Prison and later in Lewes and Portland Jails. He was released in the amnesty of June 1917. However, he again clashed with the British by making a public speech denouncing them and their policies. He was arrested on September 4th that year and sentenced to a year in prison. He went on hunger strike in Mountjoy Jail in protest at being treated like a criminal. He was forcibly fed but his condition deteriorated rapidly. The British, fearing he would die on their hands, had him removed to the Mater Hospital on September 25th. He died that night. Tomás Ashe was laid to rest in Glasnevin Cemetery on Sunday October 1st. Over 30,000 people followed his remains to Glasnevin. Michael Collins delivered this brief oration at the graveside; 'Nothing additional remains to be said. That volley, which we have just heard, is the only speech which is proper to make above the grave of a dead Fenian'.

Yet Another Jewel On The Wild Atlantic Way In Ballydavid The much anticipated Seaweed Baths and Spa ( Spá an Atlanach) have finally arrived at Tigh T.P's in Baile na nGall. The opening of The Seaweed Spa marks the end of a long year of planning, construction, decoration and layout. The commitment of Seán Breandan Ó Conchuir together with the dedication and artistic professionalism of his co-director Christiana Mitford is self evident and hallmarked in the beautiful state of the art facilities provided by them in Ballydavid. Christiana brings with her a wealth of Austrian charm and an admiral work ethic noted and acknowledged by many since she came to reside in Ballydavid. She also brings with her 12 years experience in reflexology and also as a professional massage therapist in a number of 4 & 5 star hotels and Ski resorts in her Native Austria. Spá an Atlantach has one twin and two single Seaweed baths along with two treatment rooms and a sauna. Teampall Bhaile Uí Bhaoithín, Baile an Éanaigh-Ceathrú an Teampaill Ballywiheen Church Isabel Bennett Tá fothrach sáipéil ósna Meánaoiseanna, agus an teampall atá mórthimpeall air, ‘Teampall Bhaile Uí Bhaoithín’, fós le feiscint i mBaile an Éanaigh-Ceathrú an Teampaill, ar an mbóthar idir Baile an Fheirtéaraigh agus Ceann Trá. Is foirgneamh simplí é. Tá sé cearnógach agus tá beanna air, ach gan aon roinnt inmheánach a bheith idir corp an tsáipéil agus an chórlann. Agus is beag maisiú a deineadh air. Ní féidir a bheith cinnte cathain a tógadh é, uair éigin sa tríú haois deag, ceaptar, ach bhí sé fós in úsáid i 1615. Tá cillín in aice leis, Reilig an Draghbháil. Tá umar baiste ón sáipéal agus stíl simplí aige, le feiscint i Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh. It is easy now to visit this ruined medieval parish church, situated on Mám na Gaoithe between Ceann Trá and Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, since a new extension to the graveyard was opened a few years ago. We know from records that it was still in repair in 1615, but may originally date from the 13th century, although its simplicity makes it difficult to date. It was the church of the parish of Márthain, and it is interesting to note that a tower-house castle was situated in the adjacent townland of Baile an Éanaigh-Ceathrú an Chaisleáin, possibly built by the Ferriters, who we know were a powerful family in the medieval period in the nearby Dún Urlann parish. The church is a simple, rectangular, gabled building with no apparent division between the nave and the chancel (although a rood screen may have been present when the church was in use) and it possibly had an attic story. There was one window in the east gable, one in the north wall and two in the south. The doorway was in the north wall. There are several cross-inscribed grave markers in the graveyard sur46 West Kerry Live

rounding the church, and Reilig an Draghbháil, a cillín, can be seen in a nearby field. It is interesting to note that several of the medieval churches on the peninsula have similar associated graveyards for the unbaptised. A font from the church is to be seen in the collection of Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle) www.westkerrymuseum.com, where you will find further information about this and many other monuments. The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.30 pm. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum.com. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers. Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caifé agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá, 10.00 r.n. – 5.30 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Killorglin Tidy Towns. Orna Eccles Strand Street, Dingle Phone: 086 8869323

Killorglin Tidy Towns are continuing to meet right throughout the summertime two evenings a week; Tue/Thur @ 7pm by the Monument in the Fairfield. Each week we tackle different tasks on our to-do list and get them done. We are delighted with the attendance lately and still encourage volunteers to join for an hour or two to help us make the town a nicer place to live, work, visit and enjoy what we have to offer. We meet the first Tuesday of every month and O’ Grady's Bar kindly hosts KTT's monthly meetings. This is also a public meeting where KTT volunteers and those interested in the work carried out by KTT are invited to attend. At the meetings we review ongoing work, and plan the work to be carried out in the coming months. For larger tasks - such as landscaping and community engagement - sub-committees are appointed. If you are interested in working on a particular project in any capacity please let us know - we are always looking for volunteers! Unfortunately the last 2 meeting had to be postponed so the next meeting is Tuesday 14th of July. Please stop by and join us. Huge thanks goes out to Cappanlea, Donal Dowd and his crew for the fantastic work they have done on our Laune Bridge. Not a task that we could have possibly done ourselves. Check out our Facebook page for photo's to see them in action. Sorry in advance for the traffic delays while this work is in progress. Any questions call Orna on 087 9871807. Slainte.

Killorglin Streetfeast Alfie Hughes On Saturday the 27th of June, KDYS Killorglin hosted a Streetfeast at their Centre on Lower Bridge St Killorglin. Over 100 people attended on the day. Lots of local businesses were invited as well as community groups, teachers and the general public. The KDYS wanted to highlight the good work they are doing in the community and also say thanks for all the local support they have received over the years. This support was evident by the donations that KDYS received on the day. Jacks Bakery gave pastries and sweet treats, Eamonn Sheehan Butchers gave 60 burgers, Sethu Indian Restaurant gave a delicious chicken curry and Micko’s gave Pizza’s. Young people and parents donated all kinds of cakes and sweet treats that kept everybody happy.

Outside the Centre in the new KDYS Garden, the BBQ and music was great fun along with the free face painting and games. Inside, the Youth Committee had their work on display, showing pictures of them helping the Killorglin Tidy Towns, running Cake Sales and organising Youth Disco’s. Inside and out were fully decorated with balloons and colour. A new event was held that day was the Spud - Off Mór competition. This could not have been done without the help of Declan Crowley from the Grow It Yourself (GIY) group. A number of local Spud Growers entered on the day to find the best Spud in Mid Kerry. The winner was Margaret Griffin from Gurrane West, Killorglin. Margaret is also an active member of GIY. The KDYS would like to host an even bigger Spud Mor competition next year with three categories involving National Schools, Secondary Schools and Community Groups. The winners will go forward to take on the West Kerry champion.

www.westkerrylive.ie

We would hope that the Spud-Off could be rotated between Mid and West Kerry on an annual basis to bring the communities closer together and just have some great fun. The KDYS would urge schools and community groups to get their spuds planted in the finest Mid Kerry soil by St Patrick’s Day next year and take on West Kerry. There are lots of good reasons to have a Street Feast, but it's really just a great excuse to eat great food, celebrate your local community and meet new people who live near you.

Election of New Community Council for the Castlegregory Area The volunteers, who are distributing ballot papers in the Castlegregory area have nearly completed the monumental task of distributing the ballot papers and needs analysis survey. However the distribution is nearly completed and now the task of collecting the ballot papers can begin. We hope to have all of the ballot papers collected now by the 7th July. Please if you have not received a ballot paper or if a volunteer has not collected a ballot paper from you by the 7th July call in to the information centre to pick one up or deliver it back to the information centre by 10th July. The election process is being directed and overseen by James O’Neill from Muintir na Tire, all changes to the scheduling have been cleared with him in advance. We have now invited James O’Neill to count the votes after the Summer Festival and hope a new committee will be in place soon thereafter. 20th Anniversary Celebrations: On Saturday 18th July Castlegregory Celtic FC will celebrate its 20th year as a club by holding a ‘Legends V current team’ game on the pitch at Kellysheight followed after by refreshments and craic in Maurice Fitzgerald’s Bar, Castlegregory. Spreading Hope in Guatemala Rachel Ní Fhionnáin What is 'Hope Guatemala'? We see this slogan emblazoned on Eddy Dieckmann's van, often spotted around Dingle. Fundraising nights are advertised, Fun Runs to Ventry are pictured in WKL. So what happens to your contribution? I am spending two months teaching English and Drama here in CERNE, a holistic health centre, which is one of the projects 'Hope Guatemala' supports. CERNE itself has been up and running for over 27 years, founded by La Hermana Maria, who passed away yesterday in Guatemala city. With no support from corrupt Governments, her mission was to educate, provide recovery, nutrition and help break the poverty cycle through learning with CERNE (Centro de Educación, Recuperacion Nutricional Emanuel) which overlooks Volcán del Fuego. A permanent staff of Guatemalans, Doctor Edwin Rojas, Señora Pili, and Nurse Ester focus on HIV patients and young mothers with malnourished children who stay in the centre for up to a month. Hygiene, self-care and self-love are promoted. It is an opportunity for them to share problems in a positive, supportive, environment along with availing of nutritious food. (Many come from a background of domestic violence.) Claudia, a local 'Guatemalteca', cooks hot meals over a charcoal stove for these ladies, for the CERNE staff and for fifty two children each morning. The children skip in, queueing up with pink plastic plates for 'huevos', 'frijoles' (uibheacha agus pónairí ) for breakfast and after school, they arrive with as much enthusiasm for lunch which consists of of 'pollo', 'arroz', 'frijoes', 'huevos' (sicín, rís, pónairí, uibheacha) and purified water is available. A 'comedor' eating room with murals of farm animals, painted by previous volunteers, brighten the room. Dingle funds pay for this food. The niños shout 'Gracias' as they head off to the adjacent school, to the sports field or home to help making 'tortilla' bread, pick fruit, coffee. Eber, a little six year old boy noted not to help at home, has a Bart Simpson type sling shot and gets a thrill from killing a bird in the bushes, if lucky. In class yesterday, he was hiding one not so lucky unidentified éinín in his pocket, much to his amigos whispers, smiles and delight . One of my Dad's poems about himself and his brother Pádraig trapping birds called 'Páid's crib' springs to mind!

day. Dr Edwin thanks the Corca Dhuibhne community and welcomes you to come over and stay and share your skills as a cook, a dietitian, psychologist, counsellor, a teacher, a nurse, a doctor, actor, whenever you can? Seo leat! But, can't Guatemala care for itself? Not at the moment and there is no social welfare. Guatemala is growing in strength, but is still struggling, (as you may have seen on Pia and Till's moving documentary 'La Violencia- The Untold Truths about Guatemala' shown at the Dingle Film Festival). So, if Hope Guatemala's funds dry up, the breakfast and lunch scheme will no longer be sustainable and Dr Edwin's salary will drop which may mean a community is left without a CERNE centre. But isn't Guatemala lush with avocadoes, mangos and bananas? Yes, for exportation and the families here pick the fruit but are not allowed to eat. At weekends, there is little food when CERNE centre closes. So how can we help? Support Eddy when you see him in his van. Email nuevodiaeddy@hotmail.com. Facebook 'Hope Guatemala'. See www. hopeguatemala.com. Drop in for a coffee in the new Grey´s Lane Bistro and ask Ed Mulvihill about his experience here. Chat to Anna Slattery, Máire Ruiseal, Mary Kiernan and Seamus O' Hara. Email Edwin Rojas at centrocerne@yahoo.es. Guatemala awaits you for a fulfilling, wonderful experience. Vaya te!

'Pádraig constructed the pyramidal crib with alder twigs to capture lusty, speckled thrushes in the snow ... Páid yanked the twine/ to incarcerate the captive ... The Culpable Captors liberated her, whom they feared ...' Education here is trapped and the culpable captors are not going to liberate any time soon. In Guatemala, primary education is free but only 4 out of 15.8 million are enrolled according to UNICEF. Only 2.8 percent of the GDP is spent on education with 56 per cent of that for primary school and 13 per cent for secondary. (Many children cannot afford to continue with secondary here, unless a BECA scholarship is awarded from CERNE, thanks to your Hope Guatemala contributions.) Seven students currently avail of this here and hope to become engineers, fashion designers, cooks and mechanics, hairdressers. Ta siad fiorbhuíoch dibh. It is uplifting, as a teacher here to see the children's enthusiasm. The early learning cards I 'borrowed' from my nephew Mossy are a huge hit and they all beg to take five cards at a time to study at night. 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes' is the summer hit with 'Old Mac Donald' in close second place. Chickens, rooster, birds dogs are the morning alarm. When classes start, I alert one boy, generally Bayron, who sits outside his hut. His whistle alerts the others to come to class and they arrive shouting “ Allo teacher, good morning”, no matter what time of 52 West Kerry Live

Roasted Beetroot, Chard and Soft Cream Cheese Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School The following has proved to be such a tasty dish; it can be served as a starter, side or as a salad. It can be made by using some of the great produce we have available to us here at this time of the year. For this recipe I gathered most of the ingredients from the locality; the vegetables came form Dúil sa Dulra which can be got from Rachel at the farmers market every Friday, the cheese I used first for this dish was Maja’s really tasty soft cream cheese (with a hint of blue cheese) from the Little Cheese Shop in Dingle, but I have since tried it with Dingle Farmhouse cream cheese which can be got at Crinkle on Green St, Dingle and both work so well. I have added some toasted nuts to this for a little crunch, but feel free to add other ingredients such as: pearl barley, smoked bacon, sliced garlic or a spoon of yogurt. Ingredients 3-4 Young beetroot, washed and skin left on 1 bag of Swiss chard, washed and stalks separated from the leaves Handful of toasted almonds Handful of flat leaf parsley chopped finely 100g of fresh cream cheese Sherry Vinegar ½ lemon juiced Rapeseed Oil

Sea salt Black Pepper

cheese and dot it around the warm beetroot. Enjoy!!!

To cook the beetroot, Place them in a pot of hot water and cook for about 15 minutes. Remove them form the water and allow them to cool slightly before peeling them. Once they are peeled, quarter them and place them with on a tray with some oil, salt and pepper. Roast the beetroot in an oven at 180ºc for about 20 minutes or until they are soft in the centre. At this stage add a nice dash of sherry vinegar and put it back in the oven for about 5 minutes. For the chard You can cook the chard in a pan by starting with the pan on a low heat, add some oil then add the stalks and stir them around for about 2-3 minutes. Tear the leaves and add them to the pan, toss them around in the pan until they have wilted and softened. Remove as much of the water from the pan as possible and then add the lemon juice. In a bowl take the beetroot and mix it with the chard, season well with some sherry vinegar and oil, it should be a little sharp when tasted. Add some salt and pepper and place it into the serving bowl or onto separate plates if serving as a starter. Sprinkle some almonds or parsley over them, and while it hot take a few spoons of the

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid Cuireadh an croí trasna i scata don mhuintir seo againne nuair a chuir foireann sinsir caide Chorcaí níos mó ná líonrith orainn- bhí brat allais orainn. Fearaibh mhóra láidir sea furmhór na gCorcaíoch agus cé go raibh an Brianach mar shampla go diail chun na caide a fháil ní raibh aon dul chun cinn a dhéanamh aige mar bítí á stolladh agus stracadh gan aon chic saor. Dar liom go mba cheart Geaney bheith istigh ón dtosach. Rud eile ba cheart na haistrithe a dhéanamh ag leath ama. Cuireann an isteach agus amach lagú ar mhisneach an lucht imeartha. Ní ag damnú aon duine atáim mar go raibh gach duine ar a gcroí díchill. Chuaidh trí bháide isteach orainn, rud nár cheart a thárlódh go mór mhór an dara báide. Bhí líne lár baill an- láidir ag Corcaigh agus is de bharr mí-éifeacht bheadh cúpla ceann eile acu. Ní raibh ach dubh t-iongan a chuir cosc ar Geaney báide a fháil. Rud amháin pé duine a bhí ar Hurley chuir sé ceangal na gcúig gcaol air. Ach mura ndein dhein an Coiléanach. Chaill Corcaigh Kerrigan a bhí lán do fhuadar. D’éirigh ortha tréis leath ama cé go raibh an ghaoth i seolta Chiarraí. Mheasas go dtí an seicind deireannach ná buafaí orainn bhíos ag súil le báide a fuaireadh beagnách - ghoid Fionn an corn ó Chorcaigh agus iad ag déanamh ar an dteora. San ráite, aontaím, go bhfuil imreoirí breátha ag Corcaigh agus mar is dual is cuma thíos nó thaus aon cheann don dá fhoireann, is gnáthaí go mbíonn dian chlibirt eatortha. Bhí mar a dúrt cheanna, bhí ár gcroí inár mbéal againn sna neomataí deiridh, bí ag caint ar ghadaíocht. Rud eile is minic a bhí tosaigh Chorcaí ar cosanairde agus gan aon duine ann le iad a chur dá mbuile. Na daoine a marcáileadh go docht, ní dheineadar aon rabach. Bhí an iomarca brú ar imreoirí ón dá thaobh - iad síos suas faid na páirce agus iad lag le saothar. An mbeidh an bhua ag Ciarraí, seachtain ón Satharn seo chughainn? Dar liom go mbeidh. Sea táim fós don dtuairim go n-éireóidh le foireann Éamoin sa chéad bhabhta eile. Bhí an- thaithneamh á bhaint as an gcluiche acu siúd a bhí neodrach. San idir linn tá na mionúir agus na sóisir ar fheabhas. Tá cúpla rannnóg eile nó bhearnaí le sárú fós. Caithfear a bheith foidhneach.

é mar úachtarán] ag moladh go mba cheart tréimhse ar a laghad trí mhí a chaitheamh le teagasc agus múineadh na Gaolainne mar chuid do cháilíocht aon bhun mhúinteoir, sin go díreach é agus ba chóir go mbeadh a leitheid nó a mhacasamhail i gcás aon duine a bheadh ag déanamh an ATO. Fuirist agus an- fhuirist agus bhainfeadh sé an blas searbh dona mbíonn le clos againn go minic. Múinteoirí ag múineadh Gaolainne i mBéarla. Ba dheacair a dhéanamh amach an raibh aon saghas namhaid aici. Ní raibh. Bean lách cuirtéiseach agus croí móir. Thaithn ceol agus amhráin lei agus is minic a déarfadh sí ceann í féin. Bhreá lei scéalta seoigh agus beagán don leibhéal. D’obair sí go cruaidh ach neafaiseach pioca obair an tí nó na feirme nuair a bheadh gá. Bean í go raibh creideamh láidir aici bea Eibhlín. Iománaíocht I gCraobh chluiche Laighean, bhí gach duine beagnách do fhoireann Chill Chainnigh lán do bhrí agus do fhuadar. Bhí a trí nó ceathair do imreoirí ag an nGaillimh a bhí ar fheabhas. N’fheadar conas nár chuireadar an sliotar i dtreo Joe Canning níós minicí. Bhí buachaint na himeartha ina chamán. Ba cheart níos mó dos na pocanna a chur i dtreo le Iarla Taníonn, Moore nó Donnellan. Níl aon dream a bhuafaidh ar na ‘Cait’ i mbliana mura ndéanfaigh Tiobrad Árainn é. Tá siad lán do mhisneach gach duine acu agus níl aon teip ortha go séidtear an fheadóig dheireannach. Uaireanta an lá cheanna bhíodh an sliotar díreach ar aghaidh chuid do imreoirí na Gaillimhe agus ní éiríodh leo an sliotar a árdú, bhí an sort sin méiseála mar abhar crónáin ag na ‘Cait’ Gaolainn. Bhí cruinnniú poiblí san ionad nua Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta anso le déanaí le plean nó moltaí a chur ar aghaidh go dtí an Roinn Oideachais- rud a bhí iarrtha acu. Chuir an Roinn in úil go rabhadar ag teacht leis an dtumoideachas - dhá bhliain sa naíonáin. Bheadh san is dócha oiriúnach do scata páistí sa cheanntar seo. Chuala múinteoir ag cur na ceiste fén mBéarla. Sin é an nós a dhein praiseach dona bhfuil againn. Dá gcoscfaí an Béarla ar fad bheadh sé acu, óir ta sé ins gach réimse dár saol. Timpeall orainn – deirim-se Béarla éigeantach leat rud atá forleathan i gcás ionadaithe an stát-chórais. I ndeire an lae is fé na daoine féin atá sé an teanga a chur ar bhonn láidir ar shon Éire Saor agus Gaelach - gur throid na mílte Éireannach ar shon ár saoirse. Bhí glugair riamh ann. Is beidh go deo, ach tá orainn anois ár muinín a chur sa treo is ná beidh an chluiche caillte. Sinn féin, féin, a dhéanfaidh an gaisce. Tá na Catalónaigh agus Bascaigh sa Spáinn ag iarraidh neamhspleachas sa tsaol eacnamaíoch, poilitíochta agus cultúra. Tá an misneach san i scata againn ach ceist a chur orainn féin. Dúirt fear teanga liom go raibh ceist na Gaolainne an- shláintiúl sna scoileanna go dtí 1948. Bhí uair ann agus bhíodh cruinnithe bliantúla Chigirí na Roinne Óideachais iomlán i nGaolainn, ach tá an Ghaolainn cáite i dtrapaisí acu ó shoin. Déarfar leat go bhfuil múinteoir ‘cáilithe’ agus gan ach Gaolainn na fuaire aige. Tá san fíor inniu. Chuala an tUachtarán ó hUígín[ sara a toghadh 56 West Kerry Live

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service

Applying for a student grant Question I’ve just finished my Leaving Certificate and am hoping to go to college in the autumn. How do I apply for a student grant? Answer SUSI is Ireland’s single national awarding authority for all higher and further education grants. It began to process grants in 2012, replacing the 66 local awarding authorities who had previously processed student grant applications.

plete and accurate information (date of birth, Personal Public Service16:57 Numbers 21/08/2014 Page 1 (PPSNs) and bank details in particular) to avoid any delay to the processing of your application. You need to send hard copies of any supporting documentation to SUSI.

Project4:Layout 1

If you are refused a grant or are approved a grant at a rate you don’t think applies to your situation, you can appeal the decision in writing to SUSI. You must appeal within 30 days of

getting your decision. Student grants are reviewed each year. If you had a grant in one academic year and are continuing your studies on the course in the following year, SUSI will be in contact with you in order to renew or re-assess your student grant for that next year. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre--

You make an application to SUSI by completing and submitting an application form online. You must have an online account with SUSI before you can make your grant application. The closing date for applications is 1 August 2015. You can use SUSI’s eligibility reckoner to see whether you meet the standard criteria to be considered eligible for student grant funding. You must meet the conditions of the student grant scheme. You must be an Irish, EU, EEA or Swiss national or have specific leave to remain in the State. You must also have been ordinarily resident in Ireland or the EU for three of the last five years). Your family’s means (in the previous tax year – 2014) are assessed. You must also be attending an approved course in an approved institution.
