Rás an Bhuailtín August 15 Ballyferriter’s big community day out is fast approaching and Rás an Bhuailtín, will once again be the centrepiece of a fun day’s activities for the young and young in spirit. As usual, there will be the choice of a 10km run or 7km jog/walk on the most scenic of courses comprising tarmac and sand but this year’s fifth Rás begins at 1pm from last year’s start point but finishing close to the beautiful completed Playground. Time keeping will be by Precision Timing and entry is €20 for an individual for the 10km or €20 for a family. Registration is available on the day up to 12.45 and the first 100 pre-entrants on http://www.runireland.com will receive a free t-shirt. After the race – from around 3pm onwards - refreshments will be served at the School Hall in Ballyferriter and children’s activities will include bouncy castles and face painting. There is no charge but donations are most welcome. In the past years the event has raised valuable funding for the new playground in Ballyferriter and for Cumann Caide na Gaeltachta (Bord na nÓg). Following the completion of the playground, this year’s proceeds will again be split between this important local youth organisation and a proposed new sports centre for the village. The committee is extremely grateful for the sponsorship and support towards the successful completion of the playground, which now echoes with the laughter of children from near and far. We are asking for similar commitment towards our latest ambitious project and are prepared to work hard to bring the project to fruition,” said Paidi O Sé member of the playground committee and a committee member of the proposed new sports centre project. “Although we realise this will take years to build, we are absolutely certain the community will get behind us to make it happen – beginning on August 15.”

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 11th August is the Critically acc;laimed Film Timbuktu Not far from the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu, now ruled by the religious fundamentalists, proud cattle herder Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima ab=nd family . In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. Kidane and his family are being spared the chaos that prevails in Timbuktu. But their destiny changes abruptly in this stunningly rendered film from a master of world cinema The following week on Tuesday 18th August the feature will be Mr. Holmes The story is set in 1947, following a long-retired Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and rising detective son. But then he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 30-year old case. Holmes memory isn’t what it used to be, so he only remembers fragments of the case: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife 4 West Kerry Live

Places To Explore

When Ann Kelly, my cousin, had read the poem A Summer’s Day on Binn Bán Strand, which was published in West Kerry Live magazine last year, she encouraged me to compile this collection of miscellaneous poems and ballads. Some are observational, some are serious, others are speculative, a few are fictional and a few others are pure fun and fantasy! Hope you enjoy them.

Music by members of the Dingle Fife and Drum Band. All welcome.

The Eclectic Picnic Is Back!

Threshing Cancer is a charity/club in the MidKerry area which has held vintage threshing days on the farm of Brendan Ferris in Beaufort to raise money for Recovery Haven, the Oncology Unit at Kerry General Hospital & the Hospice Room at St. Joseph’s Home, Killorglin. Since its inception in 2013, Threshing Cancer has raised €49,000 in total for its three beneficiaries. This year’s Threshing And Family Fun Day takes place on Sunday 16th August. Everyone is invited to join in by the River Laune but this unique occasion will be of particular interest to historians, teachers, the farming community and those with an interest in heritage and vintage machinery. This large-scale event encompasses 35 acres. The organisers intend to display and work all methods of threshing beginning with the scutching block or stone which has been in existence for thousands of years and has been used throughout the ages. The second oldest method of threshing on display is flail threshing, invented by the Chinese for rice and brought to Europe by the Romans for cereals like oats and wheat. The first mechanical thresher was invented in 1784 cranked by hand and by pedal. Historically, the next advancement involved horses turning a gearbox which itself turned a threshing drum. This is used in conjunction with a winnowing machine. After this, the stationary thresher would have been carted from place to place on horse cart or by hay cart. Driven by oil engine and invented in the early 1900s, the next thresher was a little larger, was moved on iron wheels and could be pulled and driven by a small tractor. The final thresher, and the last before the self-propelled combine harvester, weighed four tons and required a large tractor for transport. Also on display will be three different rare balers from the early stages of baler invention. The connection between the agricultural activities of threshing and the food chain will be demonstrated as unique methods of corn grinding for flour and animal feed will take place as will bread-making and porridge-making from the flour and rolled oats produced. Straw produced in the threshing process is used in thatching houses, rope making and in personal dress for festivals. These three applications will also be demonstrated on the day as will butter-making to accompany the bread. The event will incorporate guided tours 10 West Kerry Live

and demonstrations of vintage threshing and agricultural machinery, working horses, and the secondary applications such as thatching. Traditional household artefacts such as butter churns and cream separators will be demonstrated & worked on the day. Threshing Cancer’s fundraising day will have something for every member of the family. Live entertainment will play throughout the day along with a dog show and horse showjumping. A whole host of novelty fundraising activities for both adults and children such as Digger Bucket Swap, Air Suspension Ball and Sheaf Tossing are sure to test the skills of patrons. A full list of activities can be found on our website www.threshingcancer.com The threshing event will be preceded by a fundraising Honda 50/Classic & Vintage bike run starting in Beaufort village on Saturday 15th August at 2pm followed by barbeque and disco.

Directions to event from Killorglin: Exit the town via Annadale Road L4038 and travel towards Beaufort for 3 miles to Meanus Cross (4-road cross). Turn left at Meanus Cross and continue for approximately 1.5 miles where entrance to event will be signposted. Directions to event from Beaufort village: Travel to St. Mary of the Angels and continue on L4038 for 1.5 miles to Meanus Cross. Turn right at Meanus Cross. Gates open on Sunday 16th at 1pm with activities continuing until 5pm. Adults €5. Children free admission. Free parking on-site with. For further details, Chairperson Brendan Ferris can be contacted directly on 087-2604566 after 2pm.

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Interim Nitrogen And Phosphorus Statements Available Online The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine announced today that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements for the period January to June 2015 will be available online from this Friday 31st July to all farmers registered with agfood.ie. These statements, for cattle only, are of great benefit to farmers, especially those that may have increased stock numbers in the past year. It should assist farmers in deciding whether or not they need to take any action before the end of the year to stay within the limits set down in the Nitrates Regulations. In addition to the Nitrogen and Phosphorus figures being available online, text messages are also issuing to those farmers registered for this service, who at the end of June are at or over 75 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare (approaching or likely to exceed the limit by year end). Farmers who receive this text, and who are not derogation applicants, should heed the warning and take steps, if not already in place, to reduce the nitrates loading before the end of the year. Options include exporting slurry/ farmyard manure or renting additional land. This year the Department is increasing the frequency of these interim statements by making them available bi-monthly until the end of the year. Statements for end of August and October will be available online towards the end of September and November respectively. €8 MILLION ORGANIC CAPITAL INVESTMENT SCHEME As part of the new TAMS II Scheme, the Organic Capital Investment Scheme opened for business. An indicative allocation of €8m is being made available for this Scheme over the full RDP period. The Organic Capital Investment Scheme is one of the new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Schemes (TAMS) to be launched as part of the new Rural Development Programme 2014 – 2020. The Scheme is open to all organic farmers who meet the general eligibility criteria, offering a standard rate of aid of 40% on investments up to a ceiling of €80,000. For qualifying young organic farmers who meet the specific eligibility criteria, the standard rate of aid is 60% on investments up to a ceiling of €80,000. The Scheme is co- funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). The total allocation for the various on-farm investment Schemes planned under TAMS II is €395m over the course of the programme. The objective of the Scheme is to facilitate the development of the Organic Sector so as to ensure a regular supply of high quality organic produce to meet the demand which exists in the market place. This Scheme is a key support measure which aims to enable and encourage organic farmers to develop, expand and modernise their enterprises to their full potential and avail of the market opportunities that clearly exist. All applications must be made on-line, either by the farmer or by an advisor authorised to act on his or her behalf. Copies of the Organic Capital Investment Scheme terms and conditions are available on the Department’s website : http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/farmingsectors/organicfarming/organicsscheme/organiccapitalinvestmentschemeocisThe online application system went live on Friday 31st July. The first tranche of applications will run for three months, closing towards the end of October. HIVE OF ACTIVITY: BEEKEEPERS SUMMER SCHOOL For anyone with a sweet tooth, or for those interested in producing honey, The Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations Annual Summer Course in Gormanston College, Co. Meath is taking place, as we speak, (or in this case write). The Summer School’s makes a significant contribution to the education and the development of beekeeper’s skills and highlight this in the context of maintaining bee health. Delegates will learn that a number of apiaries have recently been established across Ireland in areas that have been identified as most at risk for the introduction of the Small Hive Beetle as well as other bee pests such as the Asian Hornet. In light of the outbreak of the Small Hive Beetle last autumn in Italy and to strengthen our defences a sentinel apiary programme has been established this year across the island of Ireland. After an excellent beekeeping year in 2014 this week sees the 69th Annual Beekeeper’s Summer School taking place in Gormanston Co. Meath. With the continued strong interest in beekeeping the course is expected to attract up to 400 participants daily from Ireland and abroad. This year’s guest lecturer is the highly respected Dr. Robert Paxton from the Martin Luther University of Halle, Germany who specialises in honey bee and related research.

The Beekeepers Summer School continues at Gormanston College until Friday and day attendees can pay at the door. Full details are available at: http://www.irishbeekeeping.ie/index.php/gormanston/lecture-workshop-information. €175M TAMS SCHEMES IN FULL SWING Two new TAMS II Schemes have now opened under TAMS II: the Animal Welfare, Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme (AWSNS) and the Low Emission Slurry Spreading Scheme (LESS) - which are the third and fourth of the new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Schemes (TAMS) to be launched under the new Rural Development Programme 2014 - 2020. The Schemes are co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). These very important Schemes which will encourage the development of Irish agriculture by providing a range of new investment opportunities to Irish farmers. The benefits of the schemes range from the construction of new animal housing, the provision of nutrient storage facilities and the ever important safety elements to a more environmentally-friendly approach to the spreading of slurry, with knock-on benefits for Ireland’s ammonia and climate targets. An indicative allocation of some €175m was being made available under the terms of these two Schemes over the full RDP period. The total allocation for the various on-farm investment Schemes planned under TAMS II is €395m over the course of the programme. The Schemes are open to all farmers who meet the general eligibility criteria, offering a standard rate of aid of 40% on investments up to a ceiling of €80,000. Those availing of the LESS scheme, which has an indicative budget of €4m, will be able to avail of an independent ceiling of €40,000 which will not impact on the ceiling of €80,000 across the other TAMS II Schemes. The LESS scheme is designed to complement the related action under GLAS, which specifically encourages the application of slurry using this type of environmentally-friendly technology, which includes shallow injection systems, dribble bars, trailing shoes, as well as umbilical systems, including the base pump lay-flat hose. With regard the new Animal Welfare, Safety and Storage Scheme, some of the most important areas of investment include animal housing, calving pens, manure pits, mass concrete tanks, circular slurry stores and circulation pipes to allow for agitation of slurry, as well as a range of safety elements. All applications must be made on-line, and the online application system for both schemes is being made available immediately. The first tranche of applications will run for three months, closing towards the end of October. DAFM STRENGTHENS LEGAL PROTECTION FOR IRISH WHISKEY, IRISH POITÍN AND IRISH CREAM The New regulations has been introduced to protect the integrity a number of key Irish spirit drinks products. These regulations provide critically important protection for Irish companies in the developing Irish Spirit Drinks sector, which has ambitious plans to establish a number of new distilleries to meet the growing demand worldwide. Irish Whiskey, Irish Poitin and Irish Cream are protected “Geographical Indications” under European Law. This means that they must be produced on the Island of Ireland in accordance with strict technical specifications notified to European Commission. In the last decade, Irish Whiskey exports grew by almost 200% and the sector employs over 750 people. In 2014, close to 7 million cases of Irish Whiskey were exported to over 100 countries. Exports are set to exceed 12 million cases by 2020 and 24 million cases by 2030. Three years ago, the island of Ireland had four distilleries in operation – in the next three years that number could grow to over 20. I am confident that this success can be replicated in other spirit drinks products. The new regulations introduce strong enforcement powers to ensure that spirit drinks labelled with these protected designations are manufactured in Ireland in accordance with the approved technical specification. The designations cannot be used on products manufactured elsewhere in the EU. The regulations also apply to a range of other protected spirit drinks manufactured within the EU. These regulations mean that inferior products or those that do not share the uniquely Irish heritage of these protected Geographical Indications cannot be sold as Irish Whiskey, Irish Poitin or Irish Cream. They can help to protect the reputation and integrity of these products, but also to protect Irish jobs. From a consumer perspective, they will also give assurance to customers, at home and abroad, of the quality of the unique spirit products they are consuming. When we refer to poitin, we mean the legal incarnation, not the product of some bog-still. Application forms and other information for the verification schemes for Irish Whiskey, Irish Poitín and Irish Cream will be available to interested companies and individuals in the coming weeks. Killorglin’s Puck Fair, which runs annually from August 10-12, is undeniably one of quirkiest festivals in the world, and it is Ireland’s original and oldest ‘Gathering Festival’. The main celebration surrounds the crowning of a wild mountain goat as a King in honour of a tradition and heritage that is purported to be ancient, but can only officially be traced back as far back as 1603 when King James I issued a charter granting legal status to the existing fair in Killorglin. The 3 days of festivities begin on what is known as ‘Gathering Day’, when the main coronation ceremony takes place. The "Queen of Puck", who is always a young school girl from one of the local primary schools, crowns the goat "King Puck". The honour this year has gone to local schoolgirl Ciara O’ Brien. The Queen and King Puck will then parade through the town, granting residents and visitors alike the ‘Freedom of the Town’ for the duration of the festival and this commences three days of entertainment, music, pageantry and traditions. The parade is set to be the biggest and best yet with more floats and colourful participants guaranteed to entertain the thousands expected to line the streets on the day, and a new route will ensure spectators have a better viewing area. The parade will now begin at the Bridge, go through Lower Bridge Street, The Square, Upper Bridge Street and onto Iveragh Road. Another highlight of ‘Gathering Day’ is the Horse Fair, which is the oldest and longest continually running horse fair in the country. Buying and selling horses, ponies, donkeys & equipment starts very early in the morning, and continues throughout the opening day of Puck Fair. The second day, ‘Fair Day’, sees the street markets and craft fairs go into full swing. You’ll find everything you could possible hope for among the tented stands, from horse tack to fashion, local crafts and tasty produce. An independently run Cattle Fair, which is not organised by Puck Fair Organising Committee, also takes place on this day from early morning in Langford Street. The Closing Parade is the main highlight of final day, known as ‘The Scattering’, which leads the goat back to his mountain home. The parade will begin at Iveragh Road, and go through Upper Bridge Street, The Square, Lower Bridge Street, ending at The Bridge. The celebrations will close with a breath-taking fireworks display, which gets bigger and better every year. There’s lots more to see and do over the few days with 36 hours of free entertainment from traditional music and dance sessions, to live open air music, story-telling, workshops, street-theatre, busking, face painting, puppet theatre, a pet show, bonny baby contest, and Ireland’s premier funfair, Euroshow. And the pubs stay open until 3am! An estimated 100,000 people will visit the town over the 3 days. For the full programme of events and to learn more about the lengthy history of this festival visit www.puckfair.ie. Follow them on www.facebook.com/puckfair or twitter @puck_fair for pictures and live updates.

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Is mór an ní go bhfuil na cluichí iontacha iománaíochta ar siúl na deirí seachtaine seo agus Ciarraí ag déanamh gaisce. Is iontach iad na cluichí ban; agus níl teorainn le feabhas na hiomána. Gura céad buíochas ar son an ardú croí a thugann na cluichí seo do sheanóirí uaigneacha agus do easláin nach féidir leo dul amach fén ngréin. Deirim go minic Báisteach ó Dhia chugainn ach gan é bheith fliuch, cuid an lae amáireach go ndéanfaidh sé anocht. Ná fuil an t-ádh liom go bhfuil Imlitir an Phápa Proinsias á léamh agus á staidéar agus á haistriú agam fe láthair. Is léir go bhfuil éigeandáil againn maidir leis an dtimpeallacht. Níl aon bhaol go ndéanfaidh na Pápa Proinsias dearúd ar na boicht. Ag trácht ar éifeacht ardú ar theocht na mara deir sé gurb iad is lú fé ndeara é sin is mó a bheidh thíos leis, na boicht agus na himeallaaigh sna hollchathracha cois cósta. Is cúis díomá dó leis go bhfuil na pobail bheaga cois cósta ag fulaing toisc sainte na dtíortha saibhre atá ag scrios an oiread sin pór éisc a raibh fáil acu orthu. Bheadh sé go mór ar thaobh mhuintir Bhaile na nGall nuair a bhíodar ag iarraidh a slí bheatha iascaireachta a chosaint. Chonac féin báid mhóra na mílte siar ó Thúr Bhaile Dháith agus líonta acu a thógfadh an oiread éisc in aon chor amháin agus a dhéanfadh naomhóga na háite i mbliain. Tá a lán cuairteoirí ag tabhairt turas ar ghairdíní an Dísirt an aimsir. Ar maidin inniu i lár an báistí tháinig bean isteach chugam ag breith Buíochais liom toisc na ngairdíní céanna. Bhí seal caite aici sa Ghairdín Chrann Clainne ag míúin agus ag moladh Dé. ‘Sa bháistigh!’ arsa mise. ‘Níorbh ach fé dhíon Stáitse an Bhanna.’ Le linn na saoire bainc chaitheas an Díseart a oscailt agus bhaineas an-thaitneamh as bheith im’ fháilteoir agus bhí seans agam bualadh le daoine a bhí istigh go minic anseo cheana ach ná facaigh na pictiúir is déanaí; bhí aithne mhaith ag cuid acu ar na daoine logánta a bhfuil a bpictiúir sa mhúrphictiúr de Fáil an Linbh Íosa sa Teampall atá anois sa halla. Mo leithscéal leo siúd ar dhein uisce díobháil dá bpictiúr—mo dheartháir bocht féin ina measc. Deir m’ealaíontóir Eileanóir go mbeidh sí ar ais go luath go luath chun na fabhtaí sin a leigheas. Bhí neacht le Harry Clarke atá ocht mbliana déag agus ceithre fichid anseo ag féachaint ar Fhuinneoga Harry. Bhuail sí leis go minic. Bhí cónaí ar a clainn cóngarach do stiúdío Harry agus nuair a bhíodh sé ag obair go déanach ghlaodh sé ar a máthair á rá go mbeadh sé chucu tar éis oibre. Bhíodh fáilte ar leith ag na leanaí roimis mar d’insíodh sé scéalta sí dóibh. Chonaic sí é an uair dheireanach nuair a tháinig sé on Eilbhéis agus é an-thinn chun a fháil amach cén fáth nár cuireadh an Geneva Window ar taispeáint ansiúd. ‘Dúrtsa leis’ ar sí ‘go bhfeicfinn scáil an tram istoíche ar shíleáil mo sheomra. “ó” ar sé “sin tram na ndaoine maithe.”’ Bhí áthas uirthi go raibh an fuinneoga ar taispeáint chomh slachtmhar sin agus í buíoch do na mná rialta agus do mhuintir an Dísirt agus an Daingin. ‘Tiocfa mé arís, le cúnamh Dé’ ar sí.

News from the Garden The Prayer Garden is nearly ready. It needs some seating. If anybody would like to sponsor a seat that could be arranged. We have been told by a member of the Heritage Council that the wall of the Sisters’ Graveyard needs attention as it is in danger of falling into the graveyard. I hope we can have it attended to before that happens. The wonderful copper beech will have to be secured as well. Please pray that these matters are quickly attended to.

Castlegregory Horticultural Show & Pattern Day Debbie Quirke. Pattern Day in Castlegregory is an age old tradition. The old parish church now in ruins in Killiney was the original site of 'the rounds' and pilgrimages each year on the 15th August celebrating the Assumption of our Lady. Near the church was a well which was reputed to cure eye ailments. When the new church was built in the village, festivities were transferred there and it was then it became known as Pattern Day. Taking place around the time of the great festival of Lughnasa Pattern Day is high on the social calender of the area and the "pattern pie" was, and still is, the backbone of the days refreshments.

Twenty-three years ago the local guild of the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA) decided to add to the days festivities by organising a horticultural show to showcase local produce, flowers and baking as well as offering the community a place to meet, chat and rekindle old friendships while viewing the vast array of exhibits on show. Little has changed in the intervening years. The Horticultural Show is still an important community event and is eagerly awited by the exhibitors and viewers alike. This year there will be twenty-nine catagories from baking to eggs, to fruit and vegetables and both garden and wild flowers. Children are also encouraged to participate specifically in two categories - the baking of cupcakes and the making of a scarecrow. A full list can be obtained locally. Castlegregory and the Maharees are renowned far and wide for vegetable growing. This year we have divided the vegetable category to incorporate both kitchen gardener and commercial grower. When approached, the growers expressed great enthusiasm and were delighted to support the growers category in this year’s show. The winner in this category will receive the winners perpetual cup. The home grower will now have a category to themselves so we expect a big response to this. In addition to visiting the clubrooms to view the exhibits, visitors will be able to sit and have a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of homemade cake. Face painting will also be available for the kiddies on the day. Every year at our show we hear people say "I have better produce than that" but they don't enter. Maybe they are too embarressed or think it is for professionals. Our show is for anyone interested in gardening and we welcome all entries. So pluck up the courage and be pleasently surprised as to how much fun it is to be part of the show......you may even win a prize! So come on and enter your best ....remember it will be the same for everybody. Drop entries to the clubrooms between 12 noon and 3pm on Friday 14th......judging takes place at 4.30pm.......viewing from 11am on the 15th. Above all it should be fun so come along and enjoy the day.

Sleepy-Time Foods For Catching Those Zzzzzs Irene Ní Fhlannúra Sleepless nights, tossing and turning is enough to drive the most resilient of us over the edge. It is well known that sleep is essential for every aspect of health and indeed, for healing and repair - yet for an increasing amount of people, getting a good night’s sleep is becoming a bit of a nightmare! The failure to fall asleep or to stay asleep over a prolonged period of time can wreak havoc on both our physical and mental wellbeing. Stress, worry, caffeine, stimulants, alcohol as well as a poor diet high in sugar and fat are major contributors to poor sleep. If counting sheep isn’t working for you, maybe there is something in the kitchen that might do the trick! Few foods have the reputation of curing insomnia quite like a glass of warm milk. However, sleep experts differ greatly on this one. It appears that the psychological link with milk is stronger than its sleepinducing content and many experts believe that milk contains little or no properties that actually improves sleep! It has more to do with the association with contented, sleeping babies than anything else. On the other hand, milk is good source of amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is the precursor to sleep inducing chemicals such as serotonin and melatonin. These neurotransmitters have a calming and relaxing effect on the brain. Tryptophan is found in protein foods such as turkey, chicken, milk, nuts, seeds and legumes. Eating carbohydrates with tryptophan-containing foods make this chemical readily available to the brain. Without carbohydrates, tryptophan has a difficult time crossing the blood-brain barrier and is often left languishing outside in favour of other amino acids such as tyrosine - which stimulates brain activity and has an opposite effect on our sleep. For bedtime snacks combine complex carbohydrates, such as wholegrains with a small amount of tryptophan-containing protein. This could be a turkey sandwich made with wholemeal bread or oatcake with some peanut butter. An all-carbohydrate snack, especially junk, sugary foods and drinks - is less likely to help you sleep. Not only do you miss out on the sleepinducing effects of tryptophan, you also set off the roller-coaster effect of rising and plummeting blood sugars, which trigger the stress hormones and keep you awake! Other important nutrients include calcium and magnesium. Calcium, also found in milk - is used by the brain to convert tryptophan to melatonin, another sleepytime neurotransmitter. Magnesium is Nature’s tranquilizer - calming nerve cells and relaxing muscles. Magnesium is plentiful in leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, wholegrains and dark chocolate. A couple of squares of top quality dark chocolate (greater than 80% cocoa solids) and a handful of pumpkin seeds is another good bedtime choice! Top of the bedtime snack list is hot cocoa, made with raw, unsweetened cocoa powder and warm milk, served with an oatcake with pumpkin seed butter - lights out and goodnight! Herbal teas, tinctures and other preparations can be very beneficial to promoting a good night’s sleep. Best research favours herbs such as valerian, chamomile and lemon balm to be used as a bedtime tea. For a therapeutic dose of these herbs, use a tablespoon of dried or fresh herb to one mugful of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10 minutes before drinking. Drink these teas during the day also, instead of tea or coffee. Both valerian and lemon balm are particularly good for sleeplessness brought on by stress or anxiety. Valerian combines well with lemon balm and hops extract in herbal remedies or may be used alone. Another gentle sleep-inducer is passionflower. A dose of the tincture in a little water half hour before bedtime is best. A comforting bath or foot bath is also a great addition to your bedtime routine. Add 10-15 drops of essential oil such as lavender, orange blossom (neroli) or ylang-ylang. These aren’t just great smells, they are absorbed quickly through the skin and work their calming and soothing effect in a matter of minutes. Now that you have the right ingredients for a great night sleep, enhance your efforts by clearing your bedroom of clutter, electronics, bright lights and noise - all of which disrupt your sleep. TVs, computers and mobile phone screens are very stimulating and their bright screens inhibits melatonin production, keeping us awake well into the night. Best environment for sleep is a quiet, dark room at a comfort22 West Kerry Live

able temperature, a relaxed body and a calm mind! Sometimes, in the panic of not being able to sleep, we can overlook some of the simplest remedies or overthink our insomnia. Once discovered, poor sleeping habits can be overcome so take time to examine your own sleep routine. Take the lead from your own innate need for sleep and pave the way to the land of nod with a soothing, gentle transition time, separating day from night and soon you’ll be sleeping like a baby! The new rockeries at the back of the Charthouse are nearing completion despite the unfavourable weather conditions which have really held back flower growth generally this year. Me and Mine: a Warm hearted Memoir of a London Irish family A great opportunity to meet Anna May Mangan, whose memoir “Me and Mine” was a huge bestseller. As soon as they'd saved up for the three 'S's' - shoes, suitcase and a suit – her family left rural Ireland. Although it was the London of the 1950s where 'No Blacks, No Irish No Dogs' was the standard welcome for immigrants, for Anna May’s relations it was still better than the poverty they'd hailed from: 'Don't waste today worrying because tomorrow will be even worse' was their motto. She writes with great honesty about the joys and sorrows of a large working class Irish emigrant family, including shocking domestic violence. But above all it is the characters and her affection for them that come across, indomitable and with an unfailing sense of humour.

Inequality No Excuse For 7-16 Concession Tadhg Evans 37 minutes had ebbed away. Kildare were yet to concede a goal. Ten minutes and four nettings later, television viewers were subjected to an image so heartrending that it would have drawn the warmest of tears from the coldest man. Jason Ryan stood on the sideline, complete with fancy headset, vacantly staring into the abyss. Just before the camera left him to grieve, life! A push of a button, a few whispers down the line, but, as it turned out, no master plan. He looked the business, but facts are stubborn things. Kildare eventually conceded 7-16. They were skittled for 5-18 by Dublin just over a month ago. No walkietalkie system will wipe those concessions. This All-Ireland quarter-final provided us with questions that generated far more interest than the game itself managed. How did we reach this point? How can a team that allowed 12-34 (70 points) past them in two championship games be good enough to make it to the last eight of the championship? Did they overachieve? Perhaps, but then again most would probably include Kildare in the top sixteen of their own opinion based rankings. If their run to the quarter-finals was presented as an example of expectations being outgunned, then it would hardly keep an audience captive. They are a long way up the line from the worst team in the country. Perhaps not 27 points, mind you. Would the much touted two-tier system solve this issue? Well, no, to be as frank as frank can be. That’s not to say that such an initiative isn’t required, but let’s return to the point made in the previous paragraph. We’re not talking about Carlow, Leitrim or our exiles over the shores here. We’re talking about a county that has a proud history in matters pertaining to Gaelic football. No All-Ireland for ninety years, but they’ve not been without chances, some recent and excellent, to end that famine. Even in their current predicament, they’re at worst a middle-order batsman. If there was a two tier competition, it’s not a given that they’d be playing on the lowlands. So just how far ahead are Kerry, Donegal, Mayo and Dublin? Who knows? Meath, of a similar quality to Kildare, beat Carlow by 28 points in last year’s championship. Yet they were 16 points worse off than Dublin in the Leinster final. Can anyone beat one of the big four? Monaghan can, and have done, but they’re the only team not stopping every few yards with a stitch in pursuit. Tyrone might, if each and every star aligned. Cork nearly did a few weeks back, though their replay with Kerry, as a reflection of where both teams are at, felt like a revision by an accountant of his apprentice’s work. Then there’s the rest. And that’s what should really trouble the GAA. How have middle ranked teams become minnows in their own right? Well, the development funds supplied 28 West Kerry Live

by the GAA might provide an interesting starting point. Do Dublin deserve the most banknotes? Of course, they tend to a much larger population than anyone else, and they’re also a dual county. But do they deserve more than the other 31 counties combined, a staggering €1.46 million from central council? When Cork trail in second with €70,000, you might just have an inequality on your hands. But we already know about Dublin. We ignore everyone else because it’s fun to pick on the boys in blue. It’s not like they’re vastly superior to Kerry, Mayo or Donegal, if at all. In their last five games against ‘big four’ opposition, they’ve won three games by tight margins, and lost the other two. How can that be? Well, whisper it, or, better still, pass a memo, perhaps other teams have bank accounts too. Kerry spent in the region of €6 million on their centre of excellence, with their sponsors Kerry Group very kindly providing in excess of €1 million towards that venture. Tyrone spent a further €2 million on their own ideal of a home for greatness. Tipperary raided the till for €1.2 million to halt Kilkenny’s drive for five. Mayo regularly top the €1 million mark. Dublin might be the Arabian oil tycoons of the GAA, but let’s not pretend everyone else is a pauper. But what about the Kildares of this world? Their sponsors, Brady Family, supply approximately €100,000 per annum to the cause, which makes it one of the more lavish deals in the game right now. But that’s indicative

posed to seven? The GAA has a seriously important issue on its hands, and it needs to be dealt with urgently. When last did we have a championship that didn’t ‘really’ get underway until the middle of August? We have four competitors miles out in front, a few more stragglers, and about 25 that are throwing up by the side of the road

“Dublin might be the Arabian oil tycoons of the GAA, but let’s not pretend everyone else is a pauper.” in itself. Generous, perhaps, but as helpful as Chill, AIG or Kerry Group? Not by a cic fada. Be that as it may, these advantages aren’t new. Dublin won the All-Ireland in 2011, and were ably supported financially back then too. Kildare lost to them by one point in a Leinster semi-final, and that difference came by way of a scandalous refereeing decision. 12 months prior to that, Meath whipped Dublin in a game that could have passed for one of the infamous ‘Saw’ films. Granted, there’s inequality, but is it enough to justify conceding seventy points between two championship games? Last year, we were lead to believe that Dublin’s superiority in Leinster was indicative of a national trend. It wasn’t, and isn’t. If Kerry, Mayo or Donegal replaced Dublin out east, they too would win that championship with ease. Sunday’s duck shoot proves that. A couple of hours later, Dublin cruised to victory over a very limited Fermanagh team. But it never felt like a Leinster championship game. Fermanagh might even be inferior to Kildare, but Christ they retained their pride. How refreshing was it to see Seán Quigley and Thomas Corrigan riling the hill, and actually having the temerity to have a crack for seventy minutes as op-

From Delanoy to Dingle By Kimberly D’Adamo “Explore the world with all five senses…don’t just see, smell it taste it experience it” I usually don’t pay attention when tour guides speak. Most of the time I just run off and take pictures. The most I would take home with me would be a few fun facts that I half remembered. But this time it was different. When brother Sean Ahern talked about how we should experience the world when we traveled, this time I actually listened and took his advice. I tried my best to use all my five senses during my time in Ireland and it has even stuck with me even now that I’ve returned to America. When I was first selected to travel to Dingle to study Coastal Ecology and afterwards take an internship at the Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium I had no idea what to expect. I had traveled outside of the States many times before and have been to places like Paris, Italy and Greece but those were constant guided tours one after another with teachers from my high school that never left our side. This time was different I would be on my own. No tour guides, no teachers after our study abroad came to an end. It would only be my roommate and I. I didn’t know what I was going to do all that ran through my mind was the possibility of getting lost, having no friends and constantly wishing I was back at home as a Lifeguard. When we first arrived there was about 60 Sacred Heart University kids, we were all nervously excited and very cold. Dingle seemed more like tundra even in the month of May with its 10 degree weather compared to the 25-35 degree weather we were having back at home. Unlike everyone else who had classes in the building next to the church that Sacred Heart borrowed, the Coastal ecology kids had class in the Aquarium. Little did I know, what me, a city girl, germaphobe was in for. I never even owned a pair of hiking boots until this trip. Day one, I sliced my thumb open on a rock when looking at all the species at the base of the lighthouse. That was enough to make me want to throw in the towel but that was the least of my worries by the end of the two weeks. Every day we were at a new lake or new beach with waders nets and grids counting and measuring fish we caught, along with digging for different types of land species and sorting and identifying large buckets of dead fish. I wasn’t surprised that I became desensitized from my old ways especially with Kevin Flannery, a director at Oceanworld, around. He got everyone to drop their old habits and somehow have fun playing in the dirt and mud. His passion for the class made everyone passionate too. Everyone went from constantly using hand sanitizer to helping each other out of two feet of mud. Trust me even I, a 5 ft girl, needed to get pulled out of 2-3 ft of mud one too many times. Our group was convinced we had the best study abroad class out of all. We were proud to walk to the aquarium every day and set off on a new journey. We got to actually see Ireland in all its glory while the others sat in a classroom or spent the entire day in the gym. All the trials and tribulations we went through each day of class brought us all together and made us have a really great time. When it came time for everyone to grab their bags and head on the bus, we all said our goodbyes with heavy hearts. As my roommate and I waved from our doorway we both had the same thing on our minds “what now” everyone that we had gotten close to everyone who we made memories with was gone and now it was just the two of us all alone with only the company of the rolling mountains all around us. While getting dressed for my first day of my internship I tried to look crisp and clean and even having a headband that matched my shirt. I wasn’t aware that crisp only got you so far. We came to the aquarium to complete different types of water and algae testing but in our spare time we just helped out in the Aquarium. Over the first few weeks we followed people around learning how to perform each task. Learning how to siphon tanks was one of the hardest. Being a lifeguard at an Olympic sized pool I was amazed that the way you siphon a tank was by first sucking water through a large tube then quickly shoving it into a drain before water shot out. I was used to complicated filter systems and it took me a long time to get a good pair of lungs and finally finish cleaning a tank without having the taste of murky salt water in my mouth. Everything was on a precise well-organized schedule. We fed and cleaned fish on the hour. It all seemed like so much information and I thought I would never be able to keep up.

For the first few weeks I was a nervous mess I tried to do things on my own but always needed to run and get help when curve balls came my way. It was especially hard when trying to always be clean, I wore gloves for everything even when I didn’t need to because of my New York state of mind. As time went by I got the hang of things and was able to basically run things on my own. If you ask any of the aquarium staff one thing they would probably all say about me is that I was always covered in water. I stopped worrying about getting messy and wearing gloves so much and I just accepted my new lifestyle: Fish stains and fish smell. By doing so I was finally able to concentrate on the more important things. I got to learn so much about all the fish and all the animals. I even got a little too emotionally attached to the penguins. I memorized all 14 of their names and knew all of their personalities and stories. I loved them so much; I the vegetarian didn’t even mind shoving vitamins in fish gills for them. By the end of the internship I was able to manage the whole tank by myself, if you were looking for me 99% of the time I would be found in the penguin tank talking to them as if they were real people while I cared for them. I also got opportunities I would never have any where else for example how many people do you know who fed sea turtles and sand tiger sharks? I even helped rescue a little terrapin that stole my heart that I later named Hermon. Not only did I get very attached to the animals but to the staff as well. I thought I was going to be alone the entire trip but I never was. They took me as one of their own and always made sure I was well taken care of and invited me out and included me in everything. Some of the nights I had with them are nights I will never forget. If anyone has ever seen the television show Friends that’s the best description I can give you of them. Together we would almost always hang out and share pints and stories by the same pool table and that was all we needed. With them I learned so much more about the culture and the history of Ireland. We would sit and have a lot of fun comparing Irish sayings to New York sayings. I truly enjoyed every minute I spent in Dingle. I can probably say this will be one of the best summers of my life for a long time to come. By the end of my trip learned so much and knew where every store and restaurant were and the people who inhabited them. I loved dingle so much that when it came to saying a goodbye speech the night before I left I was almost reduced to tears. Each memory and each person that I made with the Sacred Heart Class and Oceanworld are the reasons why I fell in love with dingle and they are the reason I am already planning my trip back. And this was all because I experienced my summer with all the five senses.

Clocha Oghaim, Ogham Stone Baile an Reannaigh

SORCHA NB THE SOUND OF RAIN EP LAUNCH

Isabel Bennett Cé nach bhfuil ach an t-aon chloch Oghaim amháin le feiscint anois i mBaile an Reannaigh, is anseo a fuarthas ocht gcinn de chlocha Oghaim, agus a thuilleadh iarsmaí, tar éis stoirme, breis is dhá chéad bliain ó shin. Tá roinnt acu le feiscint anois ar an mbóthar isteach go dtí Coláiste Íde (talamh príobháideach é seo), agus tógadh dhá cheann eile go Chute Hall, atá in aice le Trá Lí. Tá an baile fearainn féin, Baile an Reannaigh, in aice le Tráigh an Fhíona agus le trá Chúl Dorcha, agus tá an chloch ana-ghairid do Shlí Chorca Dhuibhne. Is ar na clocha Oghaim atá an scríbhneoireacht is ársa a mhaireann den nGaelainn. Agus is i gCorca Dhuibhne atá an bailiúchán is dlúithe de na clocha oghaim. Tá thart ar 60 cloch sa cheantar. As a follow-on from last week’s piece about 3D scanning of ogham stones, this time we will look at one of the many stones which can be visited on the Dingle Peninsula, that which is situated beside the sea just off the Slí Chorca Dhuibhne in the townland of Baile an Reannaigh, not far from the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Originally 8 ogham stones were discovered here, exposed, it seems, along with other features and burials during a storm towards the end of the 18th century. Several of the ogham stones are now to be seen on the avenue into Coláiste Íde (formerly ‘Burnham House’), which is private property, and two were removed to the grounds of Chute Hall, near Tralee. The inscription on the stone which is still in situ on the site (although was not always standing) seems to read ‘CUNAMAQQI CORBBI MAQQ(I MUCCOI DOVVINIA)S’. A loose translation might be ‘Cuna the son of Corbbi the son of the family of Dovinia’. This inscription is particularly interesting as it is one of a few which indicate that the person commemorated is a descendant of the goddess(?) Dovinia, the deity from whom the people of the Corca Dhuibhne tribe descend, and whose name is preserved in the Irish name for the peninsula right up to the present day. Ogham stones are found mainly in the south of Ireland, in the counties of Kerry, Cork and Waterford, but the greatest concentration is here in Corca Dhuibhne, with over 60 known examples. The letters were carved using a grouping of between one and five notches or strokes usually on the edge of the stone, each group signifying a sound in old Irish. The inscriptions can signify a single name, or a phrase such as ‘X son of Y of the family of Z’, similar to the inscriptions on the Baile an Reannaigh stone. The inscriptions can date from the end of the 4th up to the 8th century AD. Several other locally discovered ogham stones (on loan from the National Museum of Ireland) are on display in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle, www.westkerrymuseum.com). The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.30 pm. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum.com. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers. useful for childhood fevers. Meadowsweet glycerite is a useful way of preserving the herb and a remedy children will like due to its sweetness. To make the preparation pick the flowers on a dry sunny day and pack into a jar, then mix the edible grade vegetable glycerine with 40% water and pour onto the flower tops. Put the jar on a sunny windowsill or in a warm place and leave for two weeks strain of the liquid, bottle and label. For stomach problems take one teaspoonful three times a day and as needed for heartburn and indigestion. Meadowsweet is a great herb for treating stomach acid problems with a reputation also for alleviating urinary and joint problems. It is a gentle herb suitable for sensitive individuals, children and the elderly, though please note the cautions below. Preparations and Dosage: Tea infusions can be taken therapeutically

This fragrant wild flower blooms in high summer and can be found growing in our ditches, fields and river banks. The fragrance from the flower is likened to almonds and the herb in medieval times was strewn on floors to sweeten the air. The scent can weave its way along our country roads particularly on a warm summer’s day though we would be forgiven for failing to notice the heady scent here in Corca Dhuibhne this summer! You cannot fail however to notice the herb with its masses of minute creamy coloured flowers, which form light feathery clusters that sway in any light summer breeze. The leaves are finely serrated and tinged with red on their dark green upper surfaces. The underneath of the leaf is silvery in colour. Meadowsweet known also as Queen of the Meadow was reputed to have been used by Cuchulainn and was considered a sacred herb by the druids and used as a treatment for malaria and fever. Windows 10 is the latest release in a series of operating systems from Microsoft the first of which was DOS, followed by Windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows 95, 98, Windows Millennium, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8 and now Windows 10. In the years here in West Kerry, I have worked with all of these systems and as each and every one was released they brought a bit more functionality and in recent times improved connectivity. Windows 10 will streamline the users connection to Microsoft Cloud Storage. They have also reinstated the start button, a welcome move for those who missed it in Windows 8. Microsoft seem to be settling on Windows 10 it as the future operating system. To keep it up to date, Microsoft will automatically distribute updates to all users of the system, which appears to indicate that there will not be Windows 11 or 12, at least not in the near future. Updates are a necessary part of modern computing as each operating system can contain weaknesses that are not obvious a teh time of release which are then exploited by hackers and virus writers. To ensure the operating system remains stable, companies such as Microsoft send out updates, which will patch any weaknesses or flaws in the operating system. As with any upgrade of a new operating system, it is good practice to back up your computer and check if all your existing programs, printers and other devices will continue to work with new system. The compatibility report in the Get Windows 10 app checks if your PC can run Windows 10. The report also lists any problems with your devices, apps, PC, and other important info you need to know before you upgrade. In their new privacy statements it appears that Microsoft are adopting the model that is in use by the more recent IT giants Google and Facebook, which is to store and keep all the communications and choices that a person makes in order to provide, as the company says” a more targeted experience for the user” and for advertisers. When the new privacy laws come into to effect in Europe, we should be able to know exactly what data Microsoft is storing on individual users. When people sign up to and install Windows 10 on their computer, they will receive updates for the life time of their computer for free. This has its pros and cons, as previously computer owners could decide how and when to receive updates. That option will not be there for users of Windows 10 anymore, except for larger commercial users. The automatic updates might cause a problem for people who have a slow Internet connection as they will no longer have control of when the updates take place or if they want them at all. Once you take the free upgrade Microsoft will upgrade the system as they see fit. As for the August arrival of high speed broadband in Dingle, this has received a setback and will not be here until the end of October at the earliest. Does anyone know of anyone selling pigeons, I hear they are great for getting messages from one place to another? They are also unable to read the message that they are carrying.

The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin in 1985. ANGER OVER STREET TRADERS Many Dingle shopkeepers are angry at the way casual trading has been allowed to develop on The Mall in recent years and feel frustrated at the failure of local authorities to deal with the problem. Established traders in the town rightly argue that they must pay staff, rates, taxes and insurances while the casual traders have no such constraints and so can afford to undercut the local shops. However, others would argue that casual trading has been a part of Irish life since fairs and markets were first established and that competition from casual traders is forcing the established shops to be more price competitive. On the other hand, casual traders have the reputation of selling second-hand or substandard products, whatever about the fruit and vegetable trade, and that customers have no comeback as they would have with local shops. No doubt these arguments will go on for some time but The Dingle Echo asked the County Council about the legal position of such street markets. In order to trade at established fairs and markets, and in general areas, casual traders need a licence, once known as a ‘Hawkers Licence’. These licences are available from the Department of Industry, Commerce, Trade and Tourism for an annual fee of £100. Street traders found operating without such a licence can be prosecuted by the Gardaí or the local authorities. The Gardaí also have the power to confiscate the goods being traded. Because of the threat being posed to local businesses by street traders, and the disruption of traffic Kerry County Council have established casual trading areas in in Castleisland, Kenmare and Caherciveen. These trading areas are usually located well away from a town’s commercial centre, for obvious reasons, and so are being ignored by casual traders who leave themselves open to prosecution. However, the Council is finding the enforcement of their trading areas very difficult and can often be embroiled in lengthy legal battles as a result.

In Conversation with Donald O’ Hara Melanie Mullan He’s a World War II veteran who will celebrate his 91st birthday next month. Melanie Mullan talks to Don O’Hara about his time in the Marines and coming to Ireland. Within five minutes of me sitting down to talk to Don O’Hara in his home in Annascaul, he’s lifting himself up from his seat to get something from his desk in the corner of the room: an invite to his birthday party. “As a matter of fact, I’m 37 days short of my 91st birthday, you got yourself an invite to the party!” He tells me this with great pride, his strong Lancashire accent making it all the more friendly. It sounds like his birthday is an occasion he looks forward to. “Every year we usually have a party the Friday before my birthday, god knows how many people turn up and we have a bit of a session!” Originally from Rossendale in England, Don moved to Kerry shortly after his marriage to his second wife Alma back in 1974. “I wanted to move to Spain but she said ‘No we won’t, I don’t like Spain’ so I told her we had a bit of land in Ireland and we came over to check it out.” The move to Ireland followed an extensive career in the Marines. “I didn’t have to join the marines, I did it because I had a falling out session with the Father.” The falling out being over wanting to take a girl to the cinema on a Saturday night, and his father wanting him to do work instead. “I joined the Marines because they were the only ones that would take me at 17 and a half, I wanted to join the RAF but you had to be 18 to join.” With that he left home, straight into World War II, not returning until after the D-Day landings in Normandy. “In France, they made some very small units of us. About 20 - 22 blokes in a group and we each landed to do a certain job. I was just short of my 20th birthday on D-Day. They told us that 90% of us wouldn’t come back.” After D-Day they were given two weeks annual leave, after which they were to go to Japan to repeat what happened in Normandy with the Japanese. During his time on leave, he married the girl who he wanted to take to the cinema all those years ago - Gwen. “I got Shanghaied you see! They told us that 97% of us wouldn’t make it back, so the wife said ‘well if you’re going to get knocked off I’ll take your house and your pension.’ She were laughing!” The invasion of Japan was called off while he was in the Far East, after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. O’Hara was sent to Holland to clean up after the war for a year before returning back to England. Following that he left the marines and went back to college as per his father orders to get his degree in joinery. “What they do in 3-4 years nowadays, you had to cram into 6 months back then!” But the income of a joiner wasn’t quite that of a Marine and after a few months Don returned deep sea diving until his retirement in 1973. “You name the place, I probably went there. I would be gone for months at a time which suited the wife fine. She were happy out!” Gwen passed away from Parkinsons and Cancer in 1973. Shortly after that he met Alma, recently retired from the RAF, who was

a friend of some friends. “That were a bit of a laugh with regards to Alma. She said ‘How are you fixed for getting married?’ I said ‘I’m not!’ But before the week was up she’d arranged a wedding!” He chuckles as he remember this time and coming to Ireland to build the house. “She were great she was actually! She loved animals, we had all sorts in the house! She died in 2003 from Cancer, and I’ve been on my own since then!” Although living on his he own, he’s a man with plenty of visitors. As well as being well known in Annascaul, he recently got back in touch with the family of his brother, some of whom he has never met. “I was always away, so I haven’t seen two of them since they were children, the others I’ve never met.” He hasn’t been back to Rossendale in nearly 40 years. “When I went to England I went down south to see my daughter. I had no reason to go back to Rossendale.” His daughter, his only blood relative left, will also come over for his birthday in September. As well as all the visitors, Don keeps himself busy with his workshop out the back where he makes all sorts from rocking horses to clocks and wooden boats. The workshop is full of tools and machinery along with works in progress. “I come out here when I’m able and feeling up for it and make little canons for the boats.” Although he has his stick for walking, he has no problem dropping it to turn on a machine to give me a glimpse of him at work. “I’ll hollow that out now and it’ll make a fruit bowl or something like that for someone,” he says referring to the piece he’s currently working on. In his living room alone he has two clocks and two boats, one of which is the Titanic, which he has made himself, but he doesn’t sell anything. “I’ve not sold one item. I either trade it for something or give them as a donation.” Also hanging with pride of place in his living room, is his skydive certificate which he got back in 2010. “The Irish Parachute Club wanted to have the record for the oldest person to do a skydive. So I told them if they paid for me to do it I’d do it. They wanted me to do training over 3 days but I told them they could do it in an afternoon. They even had a plane come down and collect me!” He plays that time off as not a big deal, but the articles on his desk from that occasion say otherwise. “All the papers wanted to print about me then! Silly really!” He’s certainly quite modest when it comes to his achievements. As I prepare to leave, he looks out at the rain and points over to The ATeam boxset beside his TV. “My daughter sent me that for my birthday, so I think I’ll spend the afternoon watching that. I won’t be going out anyway!!” He walks me to the door and as I say goodbye he says “Well you’ve got your ticket to the party now, so you can get back in!” I feel like I’ve just been welcomed to a pretty exclusive club.

Baked Cheese Cake with Raspberries Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

8 digestive biscuits, made into fine crumbs

If you are a lover of cheesecakes you will really appreciate a good baked cheesecake. I would recommend using a full fat cream cheese for this and especially a creamy cheese such as Dingle Farmhouse soft cream cheese, which can be found at the farmers market in Dingle each Friday. It is has such a unique creamy taste and even a small amount will add greatly to the overall taste of the cake. For best results make sure to make it the day before.

700g full-fat soft cheese

Ingredients The base 75g butter melted, plus a little to grease the tin

1 tbsp. caster For the filling 190g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp. plain flour Dash vanilla extract Zest of 1 lemon 20ml lemon juice 3 large eggs, plus 1 yolk 200ml cream lightly whipped 200g Raspberries pinch of salt Method Grease a 20inch cheesecake tin with butter. In a pan add the melted butter and stir in the crushed biscuits. Once the butter has been mixed through them you can add this to the cake tin and level it with a spatula. For the filling For the filling, increase the oven 180°c. Beat the soft cheese at a medium speed in a mixer (this can be done by hand if you do not have a mixer) until it is creamy. Turn the mixer down and add the sugar, flour and a pinch of salt. Change the mixer attachment to a whisk and add the eggs and yolk bit by bit, and add the vanilla. Fold in the lightly whipped cream The mixture should be smooth, light and somewhat airy. Brush the sides of the cheesecake tin with melted butter and put on a baking sheet. Pour in the filling - if there are any lumps, sink them using a knife - the top should be as smooth as possible. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to fan 90°c for about 25 minutes. If you gently shake the tin, the filling should have a slight wobble if not put it back in for another five minutes. Turn off the oven and open the oven door for a cheesecake that’s creamy in the centre, or leave it closed if you prefer a drier texture. Let cool in the oven for 2 hours. The cheesecake may get a slight crack on top as it cools. To finish add the raspberries to the top and serve. Enjoy!!!

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne ‘Cúirt an Mheán Oíche agus Corca Dhuibhne’

- Takako Haruki

D’fhreastail mé ar Chúrsa Gaeilge i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh, i samhradh na bliana 2002 don chéad uair. Ag an am sin, ba beag dá chuimhne a bhí agam go mbeidh mise, in éineacht le naonúr de Chumann Kyoto, in ann aistriúchán de Cúirt an Mheán Oíche le Brian Merriman go Seapáinis a thosú cúig bliana níos a dhéanaí! Is le cabhair deontais ón Aireacht Oideachais Sheapánach, a thugamar faoi. Seacht mbliana eile, mí na Nollag, 2014, d’éireodh linn an leabhar ar Merriman agus Cúirt an Mheán Oíche a fhoilsiú. Is é atá sa leabhar ná aistriúchán go Seapáinis ar an dán, aisti faoi agus léamh chomhréir an dáin i mBéarla. Thóg an tionscadal sin neart buanseasmhachta, foighne, agus samhlaíochta! Fúmsa a bhí sé an dréacht deireanach den aistriúchán a dhéanamh agus ba mhór an dúshlán é sin. Tá an-difríocht idir an dá theanga, i bhfad níos mó ná idir an Ghaeilge agus an Béarla. Ach lean sástacht an dúshlán oibre sin. Tá súil agam go bhuil luaíocht san aistriúchán sa tSeapáinis chomh héifeachtach le Cúirt an Mheán Oíche. I rith na mblianta sin is mór an tacaíocht a fuair mé ó mhuintir Bhaile an Fheirtéaraigh, agus múinteoirí agus foireann Oidheacht Chorca Dhuibhne. Bhí mise fadálach ag foghlaim na Gaeilge. Ach is daoine cineálta agus mórchroích iad múintir na háite thiar agus spreagaidís mé chun iarracht a dhéanamh an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim gach samhradh nuair a bhíos i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh. Níl aon oidhre ar Chorca Dhuibhne le Béal Ban agus Na Triúr Dreiféar domsa ach Loch Gréine ag Brian Merriman: ‘Do ghealadh mo chroí an uair chínn Loch Gréine, / An talamh ‘s an tír is íor na spéire, / Taitneamhacht aoibhinn suíomh na sléibhte / Ag bagairt a gcinn thar droim a chéile.’

to Brian Merriman, ‘Do ghealadh mo chroí an uair chínn Loch Gréine, / An talamh ’s an tír is íor na spéire, / Taitneamhacht aoibhinn suíomh na sléibhte / Ag bagairt a gcinn thar droim a chéile.’ Cúirt An Mheonoíche le Brian Merriman. Dán fada go bhfuil breis is míle líne ann is ea Cúirt An Mheonoíche. Is ionann meon agus meán; scríobhaimse meon mar sin í an fhoirm a chleacht Merriman féin, an file a chum an dán sa bhliain 1780. Is i bhFiacail i gContae an Chláir a dhein sé a shaothar fileata. Máistir matamaitice agus feirmeoir ab ea é leis. Gaeilge ar fad a bhí sa Mhumhain nuair a mhair Merriman. Bhí traidisiún láidir liteartha a shín i bhfad i bhfad siar sa chúige sin chomh maith. Níor thúisce an Chúirt ‘foilsithe’ nuair a chrom an beagán daoine go raibh léamh is scríobh acu - na scríobhaithe a thugaimid orthu - ar chóipeanna a dhéanamh de. Is é an rud atá i gceist le ‘foilsiú’ anso ná an cead a thug comhfhilí Mherriman, a bhí bunaithe in Inis, dó chun an dán a chraobhscaoileadh i measc an phobail, is é sin le rá, an dán a léamh nó a aithris in aon áit a raibh comhthalán daoine tagtha le chéile. Ba léir do lucht na haimsire úd go raibh dán Mherriman difriúil go maith le gach dá raibh léite nó cloiste acu go dtí san. Sin é an fáth gur dhein na scríobhaithe an oiread san cóipeanna de ó bhliain a chumtha isteach go bolg an naoú haoise déag. Tráchtann Merriman sa dán ar a lán Éireann rudaí a bhaineann leis an saol sóisialta, go háirithe ar an gcleamhnas agus ar an bpósadh. Ach tagraíonn sé leis do chúrsaí diamhra a aigne féin, go mórmhór a aigne i leith na mban. Ar thaobh amháin léiríonn sé an-bháigíocht leis na mná agus tuiscint dá gcruachás ag an am. Ar an láimh eile chímid scanradh istigh ina chroí rompu, mórmhór roimh chollaíocht na mban. Dán grinn agus dán dáiríre in éineacht is ea an Chúirt. Ach dán nua-aimseartha is ea an saothar so leis a oireann do léitheoirí uile an domhain. Is breá an rud é go bhfuil leagan breá Seapáinise curtha ar fáil ag Cumann Taighde Kyoto ar Theanga agus Litríocht na Gaeilge. Gura fada buan cuimhne Mherriman i ríocht ársa oirirc na Seapáine. - Liam P. ‘Cúirt an Mheán Oíche and Corca Dhuibhne’

- Takako Haruki

It was in 2002 that I attended the Irish Course in Ballyferriter for the

first time. I did not know then that, five years after that, I, together with other nine members of Kyoto Society, could start translating the 18th century Irish poetry, Cúirt an Mheán Oíche, into Japanese with the help of a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education. Nor did I dream of a publication of a book but we managed to publish Brian Merriman’s Cúirt an Mheán Oíche, in December, 2014. The book is made up of essays about the poem in Japanese and its syntactical interpretation in English as well as the Japanese translation of Cúirt an Mheán Oíche. It was a project that required a lot of perseverance, patience and creativity. To finalize the Japanese version from the original Irish language into Japanese was my own contribution to the book and I found my task a huge challenge. The challenge lies in the fact that the difference of verse style and sentence structure between the two languages is so great, much greater than, for instance, between Irish and English. Actually, I found overcoming so many difficulties was the source of great pleasure of translation. I hope the outcome deserves all the merit Cúirt an Mheán Oíche has as one of the greatest poems in Irish language.

Only 10 seats left

What supported me all through those years was the kind, openhearted and supportive Ballyferriter people, not to mention all the teachers and staff of Oidheacht Chorca Dhuibhne. My progress in Irish language acquisition was so slow that I have to admit that I needed a lot of encouragement, which was offered to me abundantly and without restraint every summer I was in Ballyferriter. To me Corca Dhuibne with its Béal Ban and the Three Sisters has been what Loch Greine was 48 West Kerry Live

Our season came to an end last Thursday night when the sides were eventually separated by a great strike in the 9th minute of extra time after the teams were tied at 1-1 at full time. Castlegregory had taken the lead in the first half through a great volley from Damien McMahon after 20 minutes but Castlemaine pulled one back ten minutes later when a strike from the edge of the box came through a crowded penalty area and was parried and pounced on and poked home to level matters. From here it was tit for tat as both sides tried to make the breakthrough but despite some good opportunities for each side the score was locked at 1-1 after full time. Extra time was again a tight affair with the tie eventually settled with a superb strike just at

the end of the first half to seal the win and a place in the semi final V Ballyheigue Ath for Castlemaine. From everyone at Castlegregory Celtic we wish them all the best in the next round. From our point of view, looking back on the season, great progress was made, especially with young U17 players coming through to the senior set up. We only lost 5 games all season and went unbeaten from September to February and and were unbeaten at home all season and also just missed out on promotion so lots of positives to take into next season. From everyone at the club a huge thanks to manager John Daniels for all his commitment all year and also to all those that supported the club throughout the year, particularly all our local sponsors. Annual soccer club mixed open golf scramble: Friday 14th August from 6pm. Teams of 3, €30 per team. Celebrations will consist of a match between the existing Castlegregory Celtic team and a team of legends and U17s, followed afterwards by celebrations in Maurice Fitzgeralds. Entry is free so please come along and help us celebrate this huge milestone for the club.

againn’, ar sé. Is dócha gur beag againn gur maith leo an róstadh. Ta scata dos na Sasanaigh a thugann na tíortha teo ortha féin agus caitheann siad furmhór a gcuid ama suite cois linn snámha clúdaithe, nó bíonn scáth fearainne/gréine mór acu agus bainid an- shásamh as an saoire gan fiú iad féin a thumadh san uisce. Creid nó na creid tá a leithéidí ann.

Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid. A thiarcais nách ar imreoirí Chill Dara a bhí an t-iomard. Seo foireann a dhein rabach ar Chorcaigh. Is ar a tharrac a bhí a shábháil ag Ciarraí in aghaidh na mbuachaillí cois Laoi. Tás agat mar a dhein ‘capaill bhána’ Chill Dara filí chaocha do Chorcaigh ach is deacair a thuiscint gur theip chómh damanta san ar Chill Dara an nDomhnach seo caite in aghaidh Chiarraí. Beidh sé ina chogadh dearg ag na himreoirí seo againne a bhí ar an bhfoireann agus iad siúd a tháinigh ar an bpáirc mar fhir ionaid. Bhí na fir ionaid ar fad go diail. Ba dheas é Pól Ó Gealbháin féna fheasóig dhubh ceannasach agus dhein Darren Ó Súilleabháin an riach ar fad. Rud a chuir ardú meanman ar chuid againn a fheabhas a bhí Tomás Breatnach. Tá sé mheasfá, ar ais ar a shean- léim mar a raibh sé sara gcuaidh sé ‘on Astráil. Ba oscailt súl a fheabhas is a chruthaigh sé. Bhí an lámh in uachtar go seoigh ag beirt lár páirce Chiarraí- dheineadar slad agus má dheineadar bhí na tosaigh ag cur gach caid beagnach a bhfuaireadar i bhfearas. Is trua liom a n-imigh ar Chill Dara. Ní raibh aon bhogadh ag na Cíarraigh mar bhí gach duine a bhí ar an bhfoireann agus iad siúd a thainigh isteach ar a gcroí díchill ag iarraidh a chur ina luí ar an mBainisteoir go raibh uatha tosnú. Rud amháin a chuir buaithreamh orm agus ar scata eile ná an gortú a bhain do James O’Donoghue.Tá súil againn ná fuil gortú tromchúiseach bainte dhó. Is seód an fear céanna i dtosaithe Chiarraí. I gcás Chill Dara ba mhór an sásamh é gur chuadar go dtí na cluichí ceathrú ceannais.

Ceol Tá ‘Na Franncaigh’ tagtha agus beid anseo go deire na míosa is dócha. Ard cheoltóirí agus bíonn leitheidi Cháit ‘Chosai’ ag súil leo gach bliain le go ndéanfadh sí dreas rince. ‘Ó, is brea liom an ceol’, arsa Cáit ‘agus chaithfeá babhta rince a dhéanamh le sásamh cheart a bhaint as’. Is diail í Cáit, bean uasal. Go maire sí an céad agus cos as.

D’fhéadfá an rud céanna a rá fé fhoireann Fear Manach. Is cuma cad a dhein Bleá Cliath chuir na buachaillí cois Éirne scór brea ar chlár an scóir - dhá bháide rud a ghoin na Bleá Cliaigh. Rud amháin a bhí follasach ná beagnách gach caid a fuair Brogan chuir se thar an dtreasnán í. Más rud é go mbuaileann Ciarraí leo caithfear ruchal do short éigin a chur fé Bhearnárd. Tá Tir Eoghain tosnaithe ar dhul i bhfeabhas arís, ach an lá cheanna, bhíodar ag braith ró mhór ar Sheán ó Caomhánaigh. Ard imreoir ‘sea Seán. Mar sin féin dhein Sligeach a ngaisce féin agus is abhar misnigh é do bhainistíocht an fhoirinn a bhfuil do fheabhas tagtha ortha. Bhí go leor daoine an- thógtha le foireann na Gaillimhe. Bhíodar tapaidh críochnúil agus mheas scata go mbainfeadh siad an bonn ós na Conallaigh. Ní tháinig an dara anál do bhuachaillí na dTreabh. Dhein na Conallaigh giota fogha dóibh sa dara leath. Beidh bliain nó dhó eile sara mbeidh siad sa chlibit do Sam. Beam ag faire anois cé a bheidh á fheachaint linn sa chraobh leath cheannais. Glac leis go bhfuil na cluichí boga gafa tharainn - pé a bheidh linn agus má bhíonn na buachailí seo againne ar aon dul leis an nDomhnach seo caite, mo ghraidhn iad siúd a bheidh ag iarraidh iad a threascairt. Níl le déanamh againn ach a bheith ar ár bpaidrín go mbeidh na Ciarraígh chomh maith an chéad lá eile agus a bhíodar an lá cheanna.

Bhíos ag féachaint ar fhoireann fé 21 bl. na Gaeltachta an Satharn seo caite agus iad ag imirt in aghaidh Chiarraí Thoir. Go sábhála Dia sinn, ná raibh rogha ocht nó naoi chlub acu siúd in aghaidh chlub amháin. Bhí an ghaoth leis an nGaeltacht sa chéad leath, ach má bhí, bhí Ciarrai Thoir i bhfad ró-mhaith dhúinn. Mheasfá go raibh buachaillí na Gaeltachta in ísle brí. Sa dara leath agus an ghaoth ina gcoinne bhíodar go diail ar fad. Bhí an- ghabhail agus an- dhul cun cinn ionta. Is dócha dá mbeadh siad leath chomh maith sa chéad leath bheadh criothán ar lucht leanúna Chiarrai Thoir. Rud eile, beidh ceathar déag do fhoireann na bliana seo ag imirt fé 21 an bhliain seo chugainn. Mar sin bainfear ramsach as fhóirne mar Ciarraí Thoir. You will be sent a letter in July 2015 informing you of the Eircode for your address and how to use it. Following the launch of Eircode in early July, you can also find or check an Eircode using the Eircode Finder which will be available at eircode.ie.

An Eircode is a unique seven-character alpha numeric code. Each Eircode will consist of a three-digit Routing Key which will identify the area and a four-character Unique Identifier for each address. For example: A65 F4E2 The Routing Key is the first three digits of an Eircode. The first character will always be a letter, followed by two numbers (except for D6W). The letters are not linked to a county or city name – except for postal districts in Dublin which will have their current post codes transferred into a Routing Key format such as D03, D12, D15, D22. The same Routing Key will be shared by several towns and townlands.
