Netfeasa To Create 15 New Jobs In Dingle Netfeasa Teo, a new start up which specialises in managing next generation Internet of Things (IoT) networks, is to establish a base in Dingle with the support of Údarás na Gaeltachta. Netfeasa Teo will provide a fully managed service of IoT, M2M and sensor networks. The Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe Mc Hugh TD said, “I’m delighted to hear that Netfeasa Teo has chosen the West Kerry Gaeltacht as a base for its operations. This illustrates that digital technology based enterprises can successfully work from some of the most rural locations in the country.” The company plans to employ 15 people in their offices in An Cúilín, Dingle in the next 24 months and will be recruiting technology and software engineers as well as financial and administrator staff. Initially, Netfeasa is focusing its advanced mobile connectivity solutions on digital devices on the move, examples include; tourism, transportation and the automotive industry. Announcing their new enterprise initiative at National Digital Week in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, Netfeasa Chairman, Mike Fitzgerald, said: “We see the West Kerry Gaeltacht as a fantastic location for our digital company. Over the last 15 years more than a hundred engineers have worked in several wireless technology companies in the region. This is an invaluable resource base and it allows us to build and compete with our peers in the IoT market.” Mr Fitzgerald added, “Smart devices are only smart when the information they give us is of measurable value. The first project we have focused on in Netfeasa is ensuring that a tourist has the best possible experience from their trip. We are deploying communications devices and sensors in a live field trial across major tourist sites in Kerry. This IoT network recommends places and events based on the users own preferences and, as importantly, real time conditions that can impact the overall experience.” The company will be recruiting experienced mobile network engineers preferably with a background working with mobile service providers. Graduate recruitment will begin in mid-2016.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 17th November will be the John Crowley directed “Brooklyn”. Adapted from Colm Tobin’s award winning novel of the same name the film is set in 1950’s h immigrant falls into a new romance as her past catches up with her. saoirse Ronan delivers a coming of age carer defining performance in the lead role in a film that has received near universal praise. The following week on Tuesday 24th November the feature at the film club will be the powerfully tense and nerve shredding drama Sicario. Led by outstanding work from Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro, Sicario is a taut, tightly wound thriller with much more on its mind than attention-getting set pieces. it’s complex narritive follows the tale of an idealistic FBI agent who is enlisted by an elected government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.

Christoph Jensen Our bi-annual music workshop under the guidance of John Billing with participants from almost all Camphill communities from Ireland took place in Camphill Ballytobin near Cullen last week. Six persons travelled from here and were rewarded with a unique experience. The week culminated Friday evening with a concert by the 70 participants in the beautiful concert hall in Ballytobin.
Meanwhile Betsie Konink has finished her 900 km walk to Santiago di Compostella and even did the extra miles to Cape Finisterre … well done Betsie and have a well-deserved rest. In her own words:

The music workshop, usually conducted at the Blasket Centre, was moved from Dingle to Ballytobin this year because we thought that the moves to the new house and to the Cois Chnoic estate would be imminent. But red tape and other delays are testing our patience. However it did not stop us from tidying up the storm-damaged and overgrown gardens at Cois Chnoic. Instead of the moves all of us are looking forward with anticipation to the forthcoming HIQA inspection on November 18th and 19th. HIQA stands for ‘Health Information and Quality Authority’ and all organisations working with special needs persons have to be registered with HIQA to assure adherence to regulations and standards.

GLAS I Letters of Acceptance Posted: Many of you have waited patiently and will now find out if you have been accepted into GLAS. These letters were posted yesterday or today and will arrive to your door by week’s end, if they haven’t been received already. All successful applicants will get a start date of 1st October 2015, and will have until 3st March 2016 to complete any tasks required. Those with tree or hedgerow planting options should consider commencing work early in the New Year, as you will not find time passing, and the completion deadline approaching. An exception to the March deadline is 31st May for the Wild Bird Cover option. This will have to be thought out, as it will involve ordering the right mix, and arranging a contractor to plant the seed mix. The recommend seed mix will be available an any local supplier, so there is no need to travel to the “ends of the earth” to get the right mix. The cynics among you will claim that this being an election year, there is little chance that any applicant will be refused. However, some people will not get in. If this has happened, you will have a second opportunity under Tranche II of the scheme. The Department of Agriculture will forward additional details concerning terms and conditions and scheme specifications, and if you have any questions, contact your advisor. GLAS Tranche II Scheme Opened: The GLAS agri-environment scheme opened last march with an expected 30,000 successfu; applicvants. Tranche II opened recently with capacity to take on an additional 10,000 to 12,000 applicants. Interest has been slower, but it is still an good option for many. It also happens to be “the only show in town”, so if you don’t join, there’s no alternative income earning possibility for you.. A total of €1.4bn has been allocated to GLAS over the lifetime of the programme, allowing a standard ‘package’ of up to € 5,000 for eligible farmers per annum. The most important thing about the new GLAS scheme is to decide who is going to complete your application. It must be carried out by an accredited advisor, and anyone not of the official Department list may not have this accreditation, and therefore may submit an invalid application, on your behalf. Once you decide who is going to do the application, you must have your advisor register you with the Department, as all GLAS applications MUST be done, on-line. This simply requires your name, address, telephone number and herd number, as they appear on your SPS form. There is also an option to have this completed by text, but if you choose this method, you must reply to the text message from DAFM or your application will not be processed. With only four weeks approximately between now and the closing date, you will have to decide fast who to pick, and the decision may not be totally yours, as there are limits to how many applications an advisor can process in this time limit. Those 28 odd days includes weekends, and with the odd wedding, funeral or even Bar Mitzvah thrown in there, time is of the essence. You may find it hard to find an advisor, but those with one should contact him asap, as the clock is ticking. If you are not registered on the DAFM agfood.ie website, this will need to be done, as all applications are processed on-line. Many will find it hard to change advisor, if you are already associated with one, as others may not have time to deal with you, as a new client. The advice is, 12 West Kerry Live
to stick to who you know, and if your advisor is not available, look for someone close to your area. The last thing you want is someone that will visit the area, charge you then be gone until 2016, when scheme records, etc, needs completion. As regard fees, these will vary but are generally around the €500 mark. Commonage Management Plans will be extra. It is up to you to shop around, but with only a short time until 7th December, people should move fast. Rumours are abound that all applications submitted will have to be admitted to the scheme. This was not the case with GLAS I, but 97% did gain admittance, so the omens are good. Those with no commonage or SAC/SPA will need to consider certain options, such as Wild Bird Cover, to secure admittance, but again, this can be discussed with your advisor. As there is only so much money in the pot, and it has to be stretched over five years, don’t be surprised if you are told at some point in the future that the maximum amount payable may be less that that claimed, at present. The application process for Commonage farmers has been simplified. The requirement for 50% participation has been reconfigured as a target, rather than an eligibility criterion, and all shareholders can now submit individual applications to join GLAS in their own right. Commonage advisers will also be given more time to complete the necessary plans. Individual applications to join GLAS by commonage shareholders would not be delayed while these plans were being prepared. The full plan would still have to be submitted before any applications could be approved, but adopting this approach would provide more time to advisers need to prepare these plans. This is all rather complicated, and has not being fully decided upon, so worry about the GLAS aspect, and wait to see what the Department has to offer on the commonages, later. Example for a Non-Commonage Holding. 5 Ha Low Input Permanent Pasture = €1,570 5 Ha Traditional Hay Meadow =€1,570 15 Bat Boxes @ €13 each =€ 195 15 Bird Boxes @ €6 each =€ 90 2 Bee Habitat (Sand) @ €45 each =€ 30 Traditional Stone wall 500m @ 70c/m = € 350 Protection of Rivers 180m @ €1.5/m = € 270 Protection of Archaelolgical Site =€ 120 Total = € 4,255 This is a realisable targetable scheme allocation, without too much effort. It would require putting aside 10.05 ha for GLAS purpose leaving the rest of the farm to be managed on a traditional commercial basis, and it would generate in excess of €4,000 annually towards your farm income. So, while it is not a great scheme, it is not a bad one, and many should consider it. What you have to ask is, can I make this amount of money on my cattle or sheep enterprise, on less than 30 acres. The answer is there. There is not much time to decide whether to join or not. So much time has passed since the first tranche, that most people will know by this stage if the scheme suits you or not. Closing date is 7th December, or little over one month, so if you are going to join, make your
www.westkerrylive.ie
decision now. Commonage Management Plans Advisors have been appointed to most, but not all Commonages in Co Kerry at this stage. However, there is some “technical” delay with the Department of Agriculture getting their CMP Application up and running on their agfood.ie website. This has resulted in no CMPs being prepared to date. And none will be prepared until this matter is resolved, and the esystem being put in place. Many farmers are worried and even annoyed that no progress has been made but this is out of the hands of the advisory service sector, and we all must be patient. All we can do is ask the department when the system will be up and running. There is no confirmed date for this, but it has being indicated by sources in Johnstown Castle that the closing deadline will now be extended until early 2016, possibly as late as early March. Remember, no GLAS applicants with commonage will be paid until these CMPs are complete, so it is in all’s interest to have them complete. Nitrates 2015 Any farmers who have exceed their nitrates levels for 2015, or are in fear of doing so will be required to carry out remedial action to prevent serious penalties and fines in 2016. The maximum allowable nitrogen level per hectare on good land is 170kg /ha. At this stage, the only way to “get out of jail” is to apply to export slurry. If you have not already completed the necessary paperwork, you should get onto it, right away, as this must be complete and sent to the Nitrates Section, Johnstown Castle, before 31st December. Considering that we have Thanksgiving, The Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Christmas between now and then, there isn’t much time left. Typical Nitrogen rates produced by most common farm animals are as follows:
What’s required is the completion of a Record 3 form, signed by you, your advisor and the relevant third party who agreed to take the slurry. All you need do is calculate the amount of nitrogen produced on farm and divide by the area farmed. If this exceeds 170, you need to submit a Record 3 Farm. Killorglin Tidy towns committee had a very successful meeting last week to help gather information and move forward with a heavy workload for this coming year. The outcome of this meeting will formulate the work plan for the next two years and will feed directly into the Tidy Towns annual submission. Don't forget when counting up those copper coins to drop them into the Tidy Towns Collection Bins which are in all businesses throughout the town. We will certainly put them to good use. You may have noticed that all the summer bedding plant containers have been removed from around town last Saturday, we are truely grateful to John Costello from Keel who gave so willingly of his time and made our workload look easy. Thank you John very much. The bridge and town does look bare at the moment but most of these areas are in big need of a good power washing. A great mornings work was done Saturday thanks to everyone who came out. We have some Transition Year students eager and willing to get involved in our Junior Tidy Towns sub committee, so if your son or daughter wants to get involved for their Gaisce award please make yourself known to any of the committee. Next week the polytunnel will be like a conveyer belt saving and repotting hundreds of plants to be put to good use for next years planting. By the way, are you aware that on average, over one third of household waste (food and garden waste) iscompostable? By composting, you reduce the need to collect, process, treat and/or dispose of biodegradable materials. This saves landfill space and the fuel needed to move things around. Composting is easy. It reduces wastes and returns nutrients to the soil. A win-win situation ! If you would like to start your own compost heap but are unsure as to how to start, have a word with us. Two of our members have completed a Master Composter course and would be happy to share their knowledge with you. If you live in a housing estate, have you ever thought of starting a Communal Composting area? Again, we could help you with this. Think local! Together we can work to preserve, protect and improve our lovely Killorglin environment - and save money in the long run.

Medicinal Mushrooms – They’re Magic! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Much of our distrust of mushrooms probably comes from the old children’s storybooks in which the mushroom always housed the evil goblin or some other villain. Mushrooms are also associated with smelly, damp fungus lurking in corners and hiding behind the wardrobe! There is an air of mystery and fear around the wild mushrooms, prompting us to take long detours just to avoid them on country walks! On contemplation, mushrooms’ deep-rooted association with the “dark side” has been left unchecked for too long and its time we took a closer look at our longest living companion and explore both the culinary and medicinal properties they have to offer. Mycology is a branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi – including their genetic and biochemical properties and while we have been slow to embrace new developments in this field, our Asian buddies are well acquainted with them and have tons of research to back up their promise! Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners acknowledge the sacred bond between us and our fungi friends, attributing it to our co-evolution. Both we and fungi have been sharing and adapting to an ever-changing environment, both externally, around us and internally, within us since our own emergence onto the planet. The Chinese practitioners believe that “certain fungi may embody the biological equivalent of compassion, and exude an abundance of life energy that we may harness to correct imbalances within ourselves”. Our side of the world is wakening up to the reality that there is more to these guys than soup and side orders. The last decade has witnessed the overwhelming interest of western research in pharmaceutical potential of mushrooms. The chief medicinal uses of mushrooms discovered so far are as anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, hypocholesterolemic (cholesterol lowering), anti-tumour, anti-cancer, anti-allergic, anti-microbial, nephroprotective (kidney) and hepatoprotective (liver) agents. That’s a lot of big words for such a small plant! The mounting evidences from various research groups across the globe, regarding anti-tumour application of mushroom extracts unarguably make it a fast-track research area worth mass attention. There are over 140,000 species of mushrooms
yet we only have names for about a tenth of them. Most valuable research into their anti-cancer activity is focused on their betaglucans. The beta-glucan polysaccharide is believed to stimulate the immune system and activate certain cells and proteins that attack cancer, including macrophages, T-cells, and natural killer cells. In laboratory studies, beta glucan appears to slow the growth of cancer in some cell cultures. Other compounds such as lentinan and AHCC (active hexose correlated compound) are capable of multiple immune functions. Other areas of study have shown medicinal mushrooms broad appeal as an adjunct therapy for cancer patients. Research has revealed that the medicinal use of certain mushrooms enhance chemotherapy efficacy and reduces the side effects such as nausea, weight loss and loss of appetite. They help to suppress cancer metastasis and inhibit tumour growth and activity. All this added to the natural antimicrobial activity of medicinal mushrooms warrants a focused inclusion in our diet to protect us from cancer cells and the opportunistic bacteria and viruses to which we are most vulnerable. Chinese Medicine practitioners have access to a wide range of these medicinal mushrooms but for us mortals, there are a good few options available to buy in the shops. Shiitake, porcini and ceps are just some examples of dried mushrooms easily found. Asian food stores often have a wider variety and may include reishi and maitake, which are widely used in Eastern medicinal practices. To reconstitute dried mushrooms, soak them in boiling water for about 20-30 minutes. They are a great stand-by to have in the kitchen and have an intense, earthy flavour – perfect for Winter cooking. Reserve the soak water and use as stock for soups and stews. Dried mushrooms require longer cooking times than the fresh, button-type mushrooms so add the in early to whatever dish you are cooking. They are perfect in stews, soups, casseroles and risotto dishes and add a depth of flavour and far-reaching health protection not found in any other food. Considerations Solar Systemsmentioned, the greatest Of the mushrooms amount of research available is of shiitake. Yes with no sunshine, active Seek if choosyou ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Annascaul Singing Club Bert McCann
It's that time of year again when the annual Team Hope Shoebox Appeal occurs. Yet again the response from the Castlegregory area has been phenomenal with hundreds of boxes donated.
We had some visitors to Patcheen's in the last week or so. A Dublinbased singing club The Cobblestoners have been running for fifteen years and have a connection with The Pavorotees, who are situated in Strasbourg in the north of France. A member of the latter group was on a recce in West Kerry a while ago prior to the two groups making a joint visit to the area. She spotted our posters and consequently got the Dubliners to request that we join them for some songs during their stay. We duly met up with them in O'Flaherty's in Dingle. Better still some of the party came out to Annascaul the following day and between us all we had a whale of a time. Songs without borders in every style one could imagine. Next Thursday 17th November the Annascaul Singing Club will be carrying on in the same vein at Patcheen's Pub. Come in and give us a song if you will. Or just have a listen. As always it's free and it's fun
The Transition Year students of Meanscoil Nua an Leith-TriĂşigh, Castlegregory and their teacher Edel O Connor wish to thank all those who donated shoeboxes to the Shoebox Appeal. They would also like to sincerely thank the residents of Ocean View Nursing home in Camp who knitted hats and scarves for the Shoebox Appeal under the guidance of Joan O'Connor. These wonderful gifts will many so many deprived children so happy. 18 West Kerry Live

CAMP NOTES Brigid O Connor HAPPY BIRTHDAY A large gathering of family and friends attended a “surprise 50th birthday party” for Tom Herlihy on Saturday night at The Junction Bar, Camp. It was a wonderful night of music and song and great food too. Congratulations Tom, Go maire tú an chéad ! ICA Mass will be celebrated at St. Marys Church, Camp on Friday, 13th November for the deceased members of Camp ICA. Everybody welcome. SAOTHRÚ AN GHAIRDÍN Comhghairdeachas le Bríd Ní Mhóráin on her new book “ Saothrú an Ghairdín which was launched by Helen Ní Shé on Friday night in Musaem Bhaile an Fheirtéaraigh during An Bhféile Bheag Fílíochta. JOY AT THE SPORTS FIELD !!! U13 NATIONAL CUP - Rd 3 - CAMP JUNIORS FC 3 - 3 Clodiagh Rangers FC (AET) (JUNIORS win 4-3 on Penalties). History was made in Camp on Saturday last with the Camp Junior Soccer U/13 team reaching the last 32 of the FAI Cup, first ever for a team from Camp, they won on penalties beating a team from Tipperary This bunch of lads have given us great games around the county since they started at U7 level but today, Saturday, National Cup Round 3, there was no greater game than that enjoyed by a big crowd down at the Sports Field.
In an exciting affair the JUNIORS were to come back from a goal down three times, once with only seconds on the clock, and it was all thanks to in-form striker Maurice O Connell who scored all three goals in another outstanding display. There were great individual games played all over the pitch, from Keeper Gavin right up to Coleman on the right wing. Even sub Owen Garvey was to have a pivotal role in the game’s outcome with superb penalty in the shoot-out. Man of the match though was reserved for the visitors as keeper James Griffin gave as good a display from a keeper as has been seen down in Camp. There was nothing beating him from distance, up close he was always in the spot. A super player. A tough day for the RANGERS but they gave a great game and just didn’t get the rub. We wish them all the best in the Nth Tipp League. But yes, a great afternoon for CAMP JUNIORS, for these lads and indeed their parents and friends...this will be a match to remember in years ahead. A super thanks also to our parents for the fantastic refreshments served after the match and a big thanks also to our unofficial groundsman Tom Griffin who had the pitch in pristine condition. Above Report courtesy of Padraig O Connell and Timmy Griffin. Congratulations and well done to all, Camp Abu ! Greta’s Herbs Giardini La Mortella Greta McCarthy-O’Brien I recently visited the renowned Italian garden ‘La Mortella’ meaning place of the myrtles on the Isle of Ischia in the spectacular Bay of Naples! In 1949 this exquisite coastal residence became the home place of the famous British classical composer William Walton and his Argentian wife Susana. She was a passionate and gifted gardener who with the aid of the well-known designer Russell Page created this incredible inspirational space. I was so captivated by its beauty it brought tears to my eyes! This wonderful garden reveals a heady mix of plants, music and art; all things I love! It encompasses practically every garden feature imaginable and is home to a fantastic collection of plants – everything from orchids to Japanese maples. There are a series of amazing ponds and fountains both inside and outside. These display cheerful water lilies; one being the largest tropical variety, Victoria amazonica whose giant lily pads supposedly can float a baby. Strangely this pink lily only flowers by night. The garden is constructed on many different levels; the rambling pathways and steps are planted with many striking foliage varieties - too numerous to mention. The meandering style of the garden leads one through a variety of well-crafted structures from arches to bridges to pergolas! My favourite plant had to be Passiflora ‘Incense’. This evergreen climber has large exotic lavender-purple flowers whose intricate design just took my breath away, another love affair began and I just have to get one! Its cousin P. caerulea has blue and white flowers and grows happily here in Kerry once provided with a south-facing wall. A Greek theatre nestles neatly amongst this green paradise; a panoramic sea view forms a living backdrop. Symphony concerts are staged there during the summer and I sense the spirit of William Walton wafts through the pine trees on those occasions! There is also an indoor recital hall and museum where we met the sound technician as he was tuning up the grand piano for that evening’s concert. With dedicated reverence he led us to the sanctity of a secret room to show us the original piano used by the composer; it is not on public display, we stood in silence touched by its humility, it was by no means a grand piano! The final highlight for me was ‘The Temple of the Sun’ which is an awesome, artistic tribute to this great composer. Gold bas-relief adorns the white walls with angels and phrases from William’s music. Rays of sunlight danced through the circular, ceiling windows and I felt completely captured in this ethereal world! However a cup of gun powder tea in the garden café brought me quickly back to earth! I could write forever about this most beautiful place. I would recommend anyone to visit - for me it was an elevating experience one which has enriched the archives of my memory! Greta McCarthy-O'Brien qualified in Amenity Horticulture at Botanic Gardens Dublin in 1983 and has been growing herbs in Annascaul for over 10 years.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Best wishes: to Jeremiah Hayes who sustained a fractured jaw in our County Championship relegation victory on Saturday. Jeremiah had surgery over the weekend. We also wish Ciarán Kelliher a speedy recovery who unfortunately missed the relegation play off. We look forward to seeing Jeremiah and Ciarán back on the football field in the very near future. County Championship Relegation Play off: Milltown Castlemaine 2-9 Austin Stacks 2-6 An ‘on-fire’ Milltown Castlemaine side created a major stir in the first game in the relegation playoff in Castleisland on Saturday afternoon- defeating a fancied Rockies side. With the wind to their backs - the Mid Kerry side began impressively -despite the loss of Jeremiah Hayes after only 3 minutes . Three points from Jack McCarthy and one from Jerome Flynn gave Milltown the early lead. However, a goal from Sean Ryan and a point from Shane Guthrie levelled the teams. A well taken point by Jonathan O’Sullivan prior to his substitution and another by his replacement Brendan Delaney gave Milltown Castlemaine a 2 point lead at the break . Milltown Castlemaine restarted the game in spectacular style -a clever pass by Shane Murphy to Jack McCarthy who punched the ball to the net giving Stacks goalie Darragh O Brien no chance. Stacks responded with two points but Jack McCarthy pointed again to leave Milltown 1-7 to 1-3 ahead after 45 minutes. A rather tempestuous spell ensued and Austin Stacks were reduced to 14 men. With 5 minutes to go, there were just 3 points between the teams - 1-8 to 1-5. A close in free to Stacks taken quickly and with tremendous force struck the wood work and was quickly cleared by Milltown Castlemaine. The ball was cleverly worked down the field and our No 12 Dónal Kelliher popped the ball beautifully into the top corner of the net. Stacks responded with an immediate goal and a point from Kieran Donaghy- with just a minute of normal time to go. Cathal Moriarty popped over the final score of the game in the 62nd minute. Scorers for Milltown-Castlemaine: Jack McCarthy 1-4, Donal Kelleher 1-0, Cathal Moriarty, Jonathan O’Sullivan, Brendan Delaney, Jerome Flynn, and David Roche 0-1 each. Well done to the management team of Mike Hickey, Garry Murphy, Mike Carroll and Timmy Teahan for their wonderful work with the team. It is a tremendous achievement to defeat last year’s County Champions. Special thanks to Kieran O Shea (physio) who ensured our panel were in tip top shape for the game... Finally, to the 36 players on the panel. You have all played your part in this memorable victory. Well done to you all.... Next up is Mid Kerry Minor and U 21 Championship! Sympathy: The club extends its sympathy to our senior player - Jonathon O’ Sullivan on the recent death of his grandfather Patrick Courtney- affectionately known as Paddy Cournane. May you enjoy eternal happiness and peace Paddy. Race Night: Our clubs annual fundraising Race Night is scheduled for early December. Some amazing work has been done on our GAA Grounds over the past few months with our new entrance and car park development. Over the next few weeks, lighting will be completed in the car park as well as additional flood lights for the football field. As you can imagine, there is a lot of expense involved in these projects. Please contact any of the club executive should you wish to advertise your business in our Race Night Programme, sponsor a race or invest in a horse for a race. Lotto: The lucky recent winners in our Lotto Jackpot Draw were: €50 each to Kellian & Nessan Flynn, Shanakeale and Siobhan Driver, c/o The Shanty. €25 each to: Patricia Clifford, Milltown, Susan O’ Shea, Milltown, Connie Hayes, Lyre and Annette Huggard. Our next club lotto draw for €7,800 will be on Friday November 20th 2015 in Jack Duggan’s Bar, Castlemaine- generously sponsored by Mike O’ Shea and sons, Ltd. (Builders)Farran, Milltown. Fun Football: Marcus, Garry and John along with other club mentors have begun FUN FOOTBALL in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. We commend the boys for their vision and their commitment to the physical and mental well -being of our boys and girls in our community. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our FaceBook Page. Motoring Consumer Guide To Buying A New Car
Generally, when you buy a new car you buy directly from a dealer or a garage. You will have a consumer contract with this dealer or garage. Under this contract you have the right to buy a car that is of merchantable quality, as described and fit for its purpose. This means that if there is a fault with the car after you have bought it, the business with whom you have the contract (i.e. the car dealer or garage) must put things right by either repairing the fault or replacing the car. In an extreme situation they may also refund you the cost of the car. These rules apply only to someone buying a car for their own personal use from someone whose normal business it is to sell cars. If you buy a commercial vehicle (a van, a truck or a tractor) you may not have the same rights as when you buy a car for personal use. Finance Often when you are buying a major item like a car you will need help to finance the purchase. You may decide to buy a car on hire purchase or borrow money to help pay for the car. You should always shop around for the best deal and remember that there is more than one way to finance the cost of a new car. Before getting a loan you should read the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) website on buying a car - your finance options. If a garage or dealer is offering to arrange finance, they are acting as a credit intermediary and they may be earning commission by arranging your credit for you. The CCPC regulates credit intermediaries and all credit intermediaries must hold an authorisation. Contact the CCPC to find out if the garage that you are dealing with is registered with them. If you choose to buy a car on hire purchase ensure that you are getting a hire purchase deal and not a consumer hire agreement. When you buy a car on hire purchase ownership of the car passes to you only after you have paid the final instalment. In the case of consumer hire agreement ownership never passes to you. After signing a credit agreement you have a ten-day cooling off period. Some garages may ask you to sign away this right but you should think carefully about this before you waive this right. Legal requirements when buying a car If you import a car to Ireland or buy a new car in Ireland you need to ensure that your car is registered and you may be obliged to pay Vehicle Registration Tax. In addition you need to ensure that you have adequate motor insurance and you need to pay motor tax annually. If you live in another country and wish to buy a car in Ireland you can register the car here temporarily. All cars in Ireland need to reach a certain standard of safety and need to be roadworthy. The National Car Test ensures that all vehicles meet certain standards. A new car will need to be tested once it has reached 4 years of age. Vehicle labelling Since July 2008, a labelling system allows consumers to compare the carbon (CO2) emissions of new cars. The first section of the label shows the emission bands and identifies the band for the particular vehicle to which a label is attached. The second section of the label provides three important points of information for consumers: The amount of fuel required to run the vehicle over 18,000 kilometres The annual motor tax payable The rate of VRT payable on the vehicle The third section of the label supplements the information provided in the first and second sections, and introduces the importance of driving behaviour. The remaining sections of the label provide essential information on the actual vehicle to which it is attached, including make, model, engine capacity, transmission, fuel type and consumption.

Buying A New Car How To Pay For It. Personal Contract Plan PCP, or Personal Contract Plan, has quickly become one of the most popular ways to finance the purchase of a new car in Ireland. But, what is it and how does it work? Effectively it is a lease - you never really own the car as such, you pay a deposit (generally but not always covered by your trade-in, deposit amounts can be as low as 10%) and then agree a finance package. The package usually consists of monthly payments for a fixed period which covers an agreed amount of the value of the car, before there's a final 'bubble' payment. The smart thing about a PCP is that it allows car makers to take into account the likely depreciation of the vehicle with most companies guaranteeing the minimum value of the car at the end of the lease. This is designed to leave enough value in the car to pay off the final bubble payment and keep the car, or ideally have a enough extra equity in the vehicle to pay the bubble payment and retain enough value to act as a deposit for your next purchase. This is a great way to help with the cost of future car purchases. But while the upside might be low monthly payments, there are downsides, especially if you get into trouble with repayments: As always there are terms and conditions to be aware of. Make sure that you read the fine print very carefully. The supplier may stipulate terms of maintenance, you may be compelled to have the car serviced at a main agent. The condition of the car and its milage at the end of the lease may effect or cancel the final guaranteed value. Remember PCPs are leases: Until the final payment is made the car is not yours and can be repossessed if payments are missed. However, under the Consumer Credit Act 1995, you have the right to cancel a PCP agreement at any time and return the car.
Hire Purchase
This Weekend Only
Sale Ends Sunday FINANCE AVAILABLE
Hire purchase is still a good option to purchase a car, with most car makers and dealers offering pre –agreed HP packages with most banks. Some of the major car dealers such as Volkswagon, Renault, BMW and some others provide their own internal finance companies, which helps to expediate the whole process. The main difference between HP and PCP is your monthly payments will be higher as you won’t be able to leave a bubble payment at the end and it may also mean that there is a requirement for a higher deposit, depending on the plan

Bank or Credit Union Loans
Bank or credit union loans are still a popular option. It allows you to purchase the car outright at the time of purchase. Private loans also usually mean you have the cash in your hand at the time of purchase which gives you greater bargaining power particularily with the purchase of second hand cars. With the up-turn in the economy banks and credit unions seem to be offering far more loan options than in previous years.

Checking The Condition Of A Car •
Never examine a car at night or in poor light conditions, always do it during daylight hours.
•
Always try to view the car when it’s dry – rain can hide a multitude of scrapes or scratches.
•
Never rush a physical examination – it’s your money, take whatever time you need to be sure this is the right car for your money.
•
Always meet a private seller at their home address and ensure it is not a dealer trying to disguise a sale.
•
Always approach a purchase knowing what questions to ask
•
Always take a test-drive.
•
Never be pressured into purchasing. Shop around as there are plenty of used cars out there.
•
Check for visible signs of damage. Are there dents, scrapes, panels not matching up evenly?
•
Look along the sides of the car for any gaps, raised areas, doors out of line, or anything out of the ordinary.
•
Are there broken or cracked light clusters, marks on bumpers, etc..
•
Check for hidden signs of damage, and wear and tear such as rust under the sills or wheel arches (run your finger under the rim to check). Light clusters not the same make could mean they’ve been damaged and replaced after a crash.
•
Tyres not of the same make and/or unevenly worn could mean they may have been replaced following damage.
•
Are there any signs of leaks on the ground after the car has been standing for a time? There could be a simple explanation for this, but you want to hear it. The only way to be absolutely certain, however, is to have it checked by a mechanic.
•
Do all the lights work properly?
•
Do the doors open properly without creaking?
•
Do the wipers, water jets, sunroof etc work properly
•
If there is a tow bar, ask what it was used to tow. A caravan is far heavier and more damaging on the suspension than a small trailer.
•
Sometimes a tow bar may have been removed before the sale. Check the boot area for any holes which might indicate that there was one present at one time, and again, ask what it was used to tow.
•
Are there any signs of spray paint or a different shade of paint in the engine bay (this is known as “overspray” and could indicate the car has been in a crash and has been re-sprayed)?
•
Are there any signs of freshly welded metal (this is a good indicator of damage and shoul be questioned)?
•
Sit in the driver’s seat and adjust it to a comfortable driving position. Then, get out and go sit directly behind it. Is the space sufficient for your backseat passengers’ needs?
•
Check under mats for anything untoward like leaks, or holes in the floor which could indicate that a tow bar was present at one time.
•
Ask, and note, if and when the timing belt has been changed as problems here can prove very costly.

New vs Second Hand Some might say buying a second hand car is the best way to get the best value. The best practice rule was to buy at two years old and sell at five, thus escaping the initial depreciation hit of a new car. This is not necessarily the case anymore though. Certainly there are many benefits to buying second hand, with many car makers now offering approved second hand packages , including a warranty (as much as two years in some cases), a full mechanical check and service and roadside recovery packages should such need arise. In that case, buying second hand can actually be almost like buying new, except less costly. However, don’t discount buying new. Newer cars tend to be more fuel and tax efficient, saving you money on running costs. Also most car makers offer their new customers integrated service and maintenance plans, which for a small initial outlay covers all regular service costs for the first three to five years. These plans can be very appealing to the customer, saving them both time and money. In summary there are definite advantages to both options, the main points to remember is do your homework, buy what you can afford from a reputable dealer and you should have many happy days of motoring ahead!

Did You Know...? Ireland, and more specifically County Offaly, holds the rather dubious distinction of being the location of the worlds first fatal car accident in 1869. The unfortunate lady who lost her life was Mary Ward a very accomplished scientist at a time when when women received little encouragement to pursue a science education. Science was a passion of the family and her cousin William Parsons had built the world’s largest reflecting telescope on the grounds of Birr castle while she herself was only one of three women on the mailing list of the Royal Astronomical Society.

William Parson’s sons, demonstrating their own inventiveness, had built a steam powered car which would have had a speed limit of 4 miles per imposed on it in the countryside (and only 2 miles per hour in towns!) by the 1865 Red Flag Act. It is not known if the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit on August 31st 1869 when Mary was thrown from the car at a bend in the road at Parsonstown (present day Birr), fell under the wheels and died almost instantly.
• All vehicles serviced and warranteed • All makes of cars serviced and repaired • Customers dropped and collected from work if required 32 West Kerry Live
The local press reported: On yesterday the people of Parsonstown were much excited and grieved at a sad accident which occurred in the town. In the afternoon of yesterday the Hon. Captain Ward, his wife, the Hon. Mrs. Ward, The Hons. Clare and Charles Parsons, and Mr. Biggs the tutor to the young gentlemen, were on a steam carriage. The vehicle had steam up, and was going at an easy pace, when on turning the sharp corner at the church, unfortunately the Hon. Mrs. Ward was thrown from the seat and fearfully injured, causing her almost immediate death. And so ended, on a bend in the road in Offaly, a promising life of scientific achievement and began the all too common incidence of road fatalities

Ergonomics
When using a phone • Use hands free devices to eliminate awkward, fixed poses, such as the phone held between your head and shoulder, ‐ especially during long phone calls.
Joan Maguire Ergonomics is defined as the study of how people work in their environment. Computer, tablet and phone users can improve their well being by taking note of the various ways that they can avoid injury acquired from use of technology. Anyone who uses a device with a screen for prolonged periods — whether on the job, at school or at home for enjoyment — is at risk for headaches, burning eyes, red eyes, a stiff neck and other symptoms that comprise computer vision syndrome (CVS) Computer ergonomics addresses ways to optimize your computer workstation to reduce the specific risks of computer vision syndrome (CVS), neck and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and other disorders affecting the muscles, spine and joints. Some experts in this field also use the term "visual ergonomics" When using a computer (PC or Laptop): 1. Sit so your head and neck are upright and in-line with your torso, not bent down or tilted back. 2. Face your computer screen directly. Avoid viewing your screen with your head turned or your back twisted. 3. Keep your elbows comfortably close to your body. 4. Use a chair that provides support for your lower back and has a cushioned seat with a contoured front edge. 5. Keep your mouse close to your keyboard so you don't have to reach for it. 6. Position your computer display so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level. This will allow you to view the screen without bending your neck. 7. Adjust the position of your display to prevent reflections of overhead and outdoor lighting appearing on your screen. 8. Put your monitor close enough to your eyes so you can comfortably read text on the screen without leaning forward. (Gary Heiting, OD, allaboutvision.com) 34 West Kerry Live
• A simple way to avoid injury is to keep calls, texts, and emails, short. • Keep your wrists in a neutral position (straight) and change hands when holding devices. • Reduce keystrokes with text shortcuts (search “text shortcuts” on your web browser or app store), or where feasible, use speech‐recognition applications. When using a tablet • When entering a lot of text, use a separate keyboard and prop the tablet on a stand to improve the viewing angle. • Limit duration of tablet use ‐ take frequent small breaks. • Focus on neck posture ‐ avoid excessive looking down when reading emails or texts. • For prolonged reading while seated, prop the tablet on a backpack, pillow, etc. to bring the screen closer. • Switch hands and fingers when using buttons/touchscreens. • Reduce keystrokes with text shortcuts (search “text shortcuts” on your web browser or app store), or where feasible, use speech‐recognition applications. • Search application stores for products that reduce keyboard use. • Maintain neutral wrist posture and alternate hands when holding devices. For tablets, consider cases with hand straps to reduce gripping. (Stanford University Environmental Health and Safety) For those who find it difficult to take breaks when working, a company called Wellnomics have developed software that will encourage or indeed require you to take breaks. Body Image In Irish Society Nuala Moore Body image in Irish society and how we can be comfortable in our bodies is such an awkward subject today. How do you approach it without exposing yourself? Trinity College did a great job with the science gallery last year and again this year. I was so honoured to be asked back to Trinity by the Students Union welfare department to offer my “weight” into the topic of being comfortable in the body we are in. Immediately I thought “wow” to think that we as individuals can in ourselves effect change in someone’s life just by sharing our own stories is a powerful tool. In a way I was compartmentalised in that my story was the ability to recognise my achievements as being greater than my image yet the world of body image that I encountered in the presentations of the other contributors was such a different story. I was the Ying in their Yang-it felt great to be the positive The Body and Soul week in Trinity was organised by the college’s Welfare Department in conjunction with a national Body and Soul. The week was headed by Conor Clancy-Conor, the Grandson of Thomas Ashe, Main St, Dingle. My story is one of growth where I no longer allow my achievements to be overshadowed by my appearance. I think “Selfie’s” can destroy an otherwise beautiful photograph. The first lady spoke about cosmetic surgery in children and teenagers which is not new, but to see it on the rise in a world where we can effect so much personal change ourselves is scary, my biggest emotional challenge was on from Dr Mimi Doran who spoke of children as young as 10 yrs of age, posting selfies and if that look did not receive adequate likes on instagram or FB than that “look” was obviously not a good one. I found that so unbalancing, that a child would value his or her appearance based on how many people liked their photo. This is soul destroying. I am fortunate enough and probably still do live in a world where my swagger is inbuilt. We were, as children put on the back of every lorry to dance, we were brought to every community games and we were all given medals without winning them. That’s what society needs to reinstill in kids and adults. Value. A few young ladies spoke about Body Image issues they faced. #strongnotskinny was a problem.. as a young lady spoke about the hashtag-“what is wrong with skinny? “ was her point and she was right.. the strong was emphasised and the skinny was demonised in that new hashtag that is trending. #hashtag normal is what she wanted. But it’s all-about value. The models on the front page of the National Newspapers are all airbrushed, 36 West Kerry Live
so you can image how difficult it was back in 2006 for me-catapulted onto the National media I was blessed coming from Dingleeveryone thought I was amazing. I did have my battles until I put my achievements so far ahead of my appearance that there would never be an over shadow. All of the speakers hammered home the need to love yourself .. the need to be confident and be aware of who you are.. When it came to my turn to speak- I stood up and said -“genuinely I am my biggest fan, to achieve in my world of extreme iceconfidence in the ability to survive is the end game” I am phenomenal and most days I give myself a big random round of applause. Not because of my brilliance but because i have achieved what I have achieved with what I have and with what I look like.. I’m not a professional athlete, I balance life, work, family commitments, stress and all the other

variables and then I achieve. but it was always for me, every single thing and even though social media can take your ability to “glory” your achievement, negativity can prevent you from celebrating as well as others, they can never take the achievements. We should all focus on who we are and what we achieve on any day…not the likes that our photos get. We need to back and create value in each other. It was an honour to stand and share. Remember what you may consider a small achievement may be a Mt Everest to someone else.. We were born to clap.. get applauding.. !!

New Website for MacGillycuddy Reeks Forum A new website focusing on all things associated with the MacGillycuddy Reeks is being launched by the MacGillycuddy Reeks Forum group. The website, www.macgillycuddyreekskerry.com will provide details about the forum itself as well as information about past and current projects, the opportunity to register for events and details on how to become a “Friend of the Reeks”. Forum co-ordinator Trish Deane of South Kerry Development Partnership said that they are delighted to finally have the website up and running. “The site will provide the opportunity to fully showcase the activities of the forum and to enable people to engage more easily with us” she said. It will also help give people more understanding of the role of the forum with regard to the long term management of the Reeks, Trish added. “We are also inviting people to send us on their photos of their day out on the mountains to put on the website” Trish said. Photos can be sent by e-mail to reeksforum@skdp.net Forum Chairperson Stewart Stephens said that he would like, on behalf of all on the Forum, to thank everyone for their excellent support to date. “Groups are now filling in events sheets before holding events on the mountain, many members of the public, walking guides business and clubs had become “Friends of the Reeks” and have provided extensive support to the forum since its foundation” Stewart said. He added that in particular, the forum wanted to pay a special tribute to the landowners on the Reeks for their ongoing support. “Many people still do not realise that the land on this iconic mountain is in private ownership” Stewart pointed out. Detailed specifications and costings for repair/remedial works needed on The Devils Ladder, The Hags Glen Path, O’Shea’s Gully and the Caher routes are currently being sought by the Forum. Plans to undertake specialised training in path repair works on the mountain, providing specialist skills in upland path maintenance to local landowners in the process is also underway at present. Full details will be available on the new website.

Keel Notes Intermediate Relegation Playoff Keel played Brosna in good conditions in Farranfore. Keel scored the first two points through Gary Sayers and Aaron Murphy but Brosna had pulled level by the tenth minute with points from Tom McGoldrick and Timmy Finnegan. Murphy and McGoldrick exchanged points before Keel pulled away into a three point lead through Sayers 2 and Murphy. However Brosna worked hard and kicked the last three points of the half, from McGoldrick, Adam Barry and Finnegan to leave it six points apiece at half time. The second half was low scoring with Keel kicking numerous wide or dropped short into Conor Kielys hands. Murphy and McGoldrick swapped points before Gary Sayers put Keel up a point entering the final quarter. Keel had the majority of possession but couldn't extend their lead and two late free's from the clinical Tom McGoldrick left the final score Brosna 0-9 Keel 0-8. It was a good performance from a Keel team missing a good few players but not enough to stop them slipping down to Junior. News from the Díseart
Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Bhí coicíos bruidiúil againn sa Díseart. D’fhoilsigh An Sagart dhá leabhar ar leith. Agus seoladh An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile i Músaeum Chorca Dhuibhne go bríomhar; ní raibh go leor leabhar againn don slua. Sheol Pádraig Ó Héalaí mac an údair níos déanaí é ag an Oireachtas. Bhí stracadh ansiúd leis air. Bhí ceiliúradh daichead bliain ar an bhfód ag An Sagart Foilsitheoirí againn ar ócáid speisialta sa Mhúsaeum arís in ómós do lucht tacaithe agus foilsithe agus scríofa na leabhar sin. Helen Ní Shé a sheol an leabhar sciamhach filíochta Saothrú An Ghairdín le Bríd Ní Mhóráin. Bhí sórt meascán mearaí ar an Athair Pádraig nár thuig go mbeadh oscailt na Féile Bige ar siúl timpeall an ama céanna san áit chéanna. Dá ainneoin sin bhí sé an-sásta nuair a d’éirigh leis 38 gcóip den leabhar a dhíol ag an ndoras sarar éalaigh sé abhaile. Bhí iontas eile roimhe ansiúd burglar alarm a bhi as feidhm ag screadaíl agus gan ar a chumas a chlab a dhúnadh agus filí glóracha le bheith ag reacadh a gcuid filíochta i séipéal gleoite an Dísirt ar 10.30. Le cabhair oilte Leictreachais Uí Mhurchú bhí gach rud in ord agus in eagar in am. Bhí Pádraig agus súil le leanúint leis an lascaine ach chaith sé imeacht go hobann sular ar éirigh leis féin aon díolachán a dhéanamh. Bhí sé ar an mbóthar arís ar an Máirt agus an uair seo go seoladh leabhair The Nano Nagle Pilgrim Artist i gCúl an tSúdaire Dé Máirt 10 Samhain. Cuireann sí síos sa leabhar seo ar a saothar sa Daíngean le grianghrafanna áille dá lán dá ndearna sí i Seomra Cruinnithe an Pharóiste taobh le Tigh na Sagart, i Séipéal na NaomhShacraimint, Scrín Fatima, An Díseart—An Halla, An Fresco etc. Ach tá formhór an leabhair (140lch) gafa lena turas go clochair agus scoileanna na Toirbhirte ar fud an domhain—Sasana, Na Filipíní (Cebu), An Astráil, An Tasmáin, An tSéalainn Nua. Tá na grianghrafanna ar fheabhas. Beidh mé ag súil le roinnt leabhar a thabhairt abhaile le scaipeadh ag fáilteoírí sa Díseart. Táim féin ar cipíní mar go bhfuil cuireadh faighte agam ó Ambasáid na hÉireann i Nua-Eabhrac do chéad theaspáint an scannáin ar Áille Chorca Dhuibhne agus Uíbh Rátha i NuaEabhrac. Go dtuga Dia slán ann agus as mé.
I should be resting after all the excitement these recent weeks. We had many visitors during Fómhar na nGéanna as an Indian Summer was known as in my youth. They came especially in to see the famed internal art works with their little contribution towards maintainence of the Díseart and the gardens. The fact that these art works won first place in the world from Tripadvisor this year was an added incentive. Our arrtist, Eleanor Yates, is with us at present repaíring some raindamage to the the big mural with its 56 busts of local people who model famous philanthropists and lovers of God and the neighbour. She is launching a book tomorrow in Portarlington in a Presentation retreat centre under the title Nano’s Pilgrim Artist. It describes in the first forty pages her work in Dingle with wonderful colour photos, and in the rest her work in Presentation Schools, Convents and Centres in England, The Far East ( Philipines), Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand. I hope to get some to sell or distribute to visitors in the Díseart. We published two new An Sagart books recently—An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile and Saothrú An Ghairdín, this latter on the ocasion of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the foundation of An Sagart Publishers. Let us hope the next 40 years will be as productive –we have published about 500 books journals and series, Buíochas le Dia.

With Ted Creedon The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin, in the winter of 1985/’86. DINGLE UNDERAGE DRINKING Is underage drinking a problem in Dingle? Strange as it may seem, many adults don’t believe that it is while many young people say that it is. So, are adults out of touch or becoming more tolerant, or are young people closer to the scene or just exaggerating? The following account is the result of a series of interviews undertaken by this magazine with parents, teachers, gardaí, publicans and young people of both sexes in Dingle. Much of the material collected was repetitive and was edited. The recorded interviews are the words of the interviewees - not ours. All those interviewed will remain anonymous. Female who drinks - aged 16 ‘I drink because I don’t see anything wrong, in moderation. I think that when a person begins to drink they over indulge. When the initial excitement wears off they just drink for pleasure. Underage drinking is disgusting when a person is drunk but this applies to all ages. I feel that a lot of people in Dingle and start quite young. I myself don’t drink very often. I know some people my age who drink a lot and I find it disgusting. My parents don’t know I drink. If they knew I would probably be in trouble but in two or three years I would be allowed to drink’. Female who doesn’t drink - aged 16. ‘ I really don’t want to drink. I never had any drink that I would want to try again, so it would be a stupid wasting money. I think it’s more of a problem with girls than with boys and it’s terrible that there are kids as young as 12 and 13 drinking and even being able to get drink at that age. In my opinion they only drink to fit in with a group or gang. The only way the situation would be if the law was strictly enforced and that nobody under 18 could buy drink. I know of a fella who walked around Dingle one night holding a bottle of cider. He was showing off to his pals but later he smashed the bottle without drinking a drop!’.
other places in Dingle to socialise except the pubs. There’s too much emphasis in education on results and not enough on education for living. There’s too much emphasis on women working. No mother at home for caring, sharing and listening. This can lead to underage drinking. Parental example is very important’. Interview with a teacher. ‘ Drinking is good providing circumstances are right. Alcohol is a drug and must be taken in a controlled, adult, way. Therefore, underage drinking cannot be good, especially when it’s done in an underhand way. Do we, as a community in Dingle, want to do anything about the problem? If we do, then there are definite steps we could take. We could approach the publicans and make them more aware of their responsibilities to the community and to the law. We could name those who are under age and who are being served drink - there aren’t that many! Because it has become more acceptable, the problem will get worse. Teenagers and peers influence each other greatly. The guards should enforce the law. That’s their job. Law is something which we support. Why do we ignore underage drinking? The publicans, as part of our community, are partly to blame as we all are, parents, teachers etc. We stand by and allow our youth to be influenced by a few. They could be beginning a life of hardship or even irresponsibility. All will not fall by the wayside but a few will - can we save the few now?’. Interview with a Garda. ‘Underage drinking is not a big problem in Dingle but every community has it to some extent. The attitude of the peer group is important. It’s easier for young people to drink incognito in a large town than in a small community where they are known. Parental example is also very important. Youthful enthusiasm combined with alcohol is a dangerous mix and can lead to sexual problems and dishonesty. Young people need money to be able to drink. If they need to work to get finance for drink this can set a bad trend later in life. Young people in Dingle are also influenced by visitors, by cinema and TV which often glamourises drinking. It’s a matter of forming attitudes - having a balanced approach to life. But we’re living in an age of uncertainty and kids will experiment. The only way to control the problem is by parental example, supervision and through an I.D. system’.
Male who drinks - aged 16. ‘ I drink for the craic. I started last summer. I don’t get any satisfaction out of drinking. I don’t drink to get drunk - just to try it out. It’s stupid to get drunk. I don’t think anything can be done about the problem generally it’s there and will always be there. I do believe that it is a problem, especially when you see teenagers steamed out of there minds. My parents don’t know I drink. If they found out I’d explain that I just drink for the craic - not the get drunk’. Male who doesn’t drink - aged 16. ‘I don’t drink because I don’t see the point of it. Most people I know drink because they want to feel better. Well, I feel just fine! Some of my friends drink - they’re not alcoholics - they just drink for the craic and not every night but usually during the summer when they go to a disco. Underage drinking is a growing problem but I don’t feel strongly against it. It doesn’t really affect me now. But the publicans should ask for more I.D. Also, the guards should be more in contact with young people to make us more aware of the effects of alcohol through lectures in school. Parents should ask their children about where they spend their time. I would have no trouble getting drink if I wanted it. One of the main reasons that there is an underage drinking problem is because it is so freely available, especially in off-licenses. Boys and girls drink for the same reason - to be cool - for the craic and because they see others doing it. Girls drink to impress the fellas. Fellas drink to be tough. I’m tough anyway!’. Interview with a publican. ‘Underage drinking is a problem in some pub - not alone in Dingle. Publicans have to be careful that they don’t discourage potential future customers but they should enforce the law. Sometimes there is a problem on the night when the Leaving Cert exams finish or when a bar is packed - then anyone could be buying drink for people under age and you won’t see them from the counter. Students are staying in school longer now many are over 18 and if they drink they influence younger ones’. Interview with a parent. ‘Underage drinking is a problem. Example given by parents may be the cause or parents’ relationships with each other. If the parent is insecure the child may also be insecure and this can lead to drink. There are no

In Northern Italy you will find a similar dish called Osso Bucco, they traditionally use veal and serve it with a saffron risotto and then have some gremolata on the side, however it works well with a creamy mash potato or even better a creamy potato and garlic gratin. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Teanga an teallaigh Tá an geimhreadh beagnach buailte linn faraor, cé go bhfuil sé ina shamhradh beag fós againn na laetha seo agus go maire sé sin i bhfad! Ní fada, mar sin féin, go mbeidh tine á lasadh sa tinteán againn agus sinn inár suí ansan cois teallaigh istoíche. Ach lasmuigh de theas an teallaigh, ar chuimhnigh tú riamh ar theanga an teallaigh chéanna? Gan dabht ar bith, is í teanga an teaghlaigh nó an teanga a labhraítear cois teallaigh an teanga is mó a théann i bhfeidhm orainn go léir. Tar éis an tsaoil, tá Gaeilge nó Béarla nó Béarla agus Gaeilge againn ar fad toisc gur chualamar é, nó í, nó an dá theanga á labhairt agus á n-úsáid go nádúrtha sa bhaile agus sinn ag éirí aníos. Nuair a bhíonn an leanbh óg, piocann sé nó sí an teanga an teallaigh seo suas gan aon dua. Déanann sé nó sí amhlaidh gan cabhair ar bith ó leabhar gramadaí, ó fhoclóir agus gan dul i dtuilleamaí ceachtanna! Seo é an feiniméan a nglaotar an “sealbhú teanga” air! Is rud nádúrtha amach is amach é. As sin amach, beidh an teanga sin nó na teangacha sin ina sheilbh ag an leanbh. Ar chuimhnigh tú riamh air? Nach mór an t-éacht é! Nuair a rachaidh an leanbh ar scoil, beidh air nó uirthi ar ndóigh, foghlaim conas léamh, conas scríobh i gceart. Foghlaimeoidh sé nó sí cruinneas, stór focal nua agus saibhreoidh sé nó sí an teanga; ach ní bheidh puinn gá leis an teanga/nó na teangacha sin a fhoghlaim, fé mar a dhéanfaí le teanga iasachta dála na Fraincise nó na Gearmáinise. Conas a n-éiríonn leis an leanbh an móréacht seo a dhéanamh? Tá an míniú a thugann na teangeolaithe ar an scéal casta a dhóthain; baineann sé le scata rudaí, an inchinn, an phearsantacht, an timpeallacht san áireamh. Ach an rud is tábhachtaí le cuimhneamh air ná nach mbeadh an leanbh ábalta an teanga nó na teangacha sin a shealbhú muna gcloisfeadh agus muna bhfeicfeadh sé nó sí an teanga á húsáid go nádúrtha cois teallaigh- seo í teanga na cumarsáide, teanga an chaidrimh agus na siamsaíochta, teanga an cheana, teanga na n-orduithe, teanga na cúlchainte agus go fiú teanga an chlamhsáin agus na sciolladóireachta! Piocfaidh an leanbh dhá theanga nó go fiú trí nó ceithre theanga suas gan aon dua má bhíonn siad in úsáid go laethúil sa teaghlach. Maidir le leanaí dátheangacha, cuir i gcás, bíonn straitéisí difriúla in úsáid ag tuismitheoirí nó ag tuismitheoir maidir le húsáid na dteangacha sin sa teaghlach. I gcomhthéacs an dátheangachais, má bhíonn stádas níos laige ag teanga amháin sa phobal, muna bhfuil sí á clos timpeall ar an bpáiste, bíonn ar an tuismitheoir nó ar thuismitheoirí féachaint chuige go n-úsáidtear an teanga sin cois teallaigh a oiread agus is féidir . Tá sé sin an-tábhachtach maidir le teanga ar nós na Gaeilge. Dúirt an sochtheangeolaí mór le rá Joshua Fishman tráth nach leor an scoil inti féin le teanga a thabhairt do leanbh- ní mór teanga na scoile agus teanga an teallaigh bheith mar an gcéanna agus ag obair le chéile chun go bhfásfaidh an leanbh aníos go nádúrtha leis an teanga. Mar sin, ná ligimis i ndearmad nach mbeadh teanga ar bith ag an leanbh murach teanga an teallaigh. Tá tábhacht mór lenár gcainte cois teallaigh mar sin. Is féidir an dá thine a adhaint sa tinteán mar sin, an tine féin (bíodh sí ina tine bhreosla nó aibhléise!) agus tine na teanga. Ní beag san! The language of the fireside Sadly, winter is almost now upon us, although long may our Indian summer continue! Before long, nonetheless, we will be lighting that fire in the fireplace. But whatever about the heat of the hearth have you ever thought about the language of the hearth? Without a doubt, is it the family language or the language or languages spoken by the family fireside that affect us most. After all, we speak Irish or English or Irish and English because we heard them and saw them used naturally at home as we were growing up. A young child picks up the language of the fireside without any difficulty. He or she does so without any help from grammar, from a dictionary and without having to rely on lessons! This is called language acquisition! It is a completely natural! From then on, the child will always possess that language or these languages. Have you ever thought about it? That is some achievement! Of course, when the child goes to school, he or she will have to learn how to read and how to write properly. He or she will learn accuracy, new vocabulary and how to enrich language. But he or she will never need to learn language in the same way as we learn a foreign language such as French or German. So, how does a child manage such an achievement? The explanation given by the linguists is complex; it involves a number of things, includ44 West Kerry Live
ing the brain, the personality and the environment. But the important thing to remember is that the child possesses the language or languages for life as a result of hearing and seeing it/them being used naturally beside the fire; all sorts of language- the language of communication and entertainment, the language of affection, the language of orders even the language of gossip, complaining and giving out! The child will pick two languages or even three or four languages up without any difficulty if they are in daily use in the family. For bilingual children for instance, different strategies are used by the parents or the parent to promote both languages. In the context of bilingualism, if one of the languages has a weaker public standing or is used less in public, the parent or parents must use that language in the home as much as possible. This is very important for a language like Irish. The famous sociolinguist, Joshua Fishman once said that the school alone cannot give language for life to the child. Do not leave it to the school! The school language and language of the hearth must be the same for the child to grow up naturally using and loving that language. So, let’s not lose sight of the importance of any language used by the fireside with our children. This is and can be the language of life for any child. We can light more than a fuel fire in the hearth therefore; let us not forget the fire of language which will stay alight for life! - Dr. Muiris Ó Laoire, Roinn na nEolaíochtaí Sóisialta Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Thrá Lí. *** Dáta don dialann! Táimid ag súil le tionscnamh ar na Clocha Oghaim a bhunú anso i gCorca Dhuibhne, le cabhair an phobail, chun cuid díobh (agus b’fhéidir cuid dos na crosleaca leis) a scanáil chun go mbeifear ábalta ar iad a chur ar fáil go digiteach. Nuair a bheidh sé sin déanta, beidh sé i bhfad níos easca iad a léamh, breis eolais a bhaint astu agus breis ‘ceisteanna’ a chur orthu! Agus leanóidh rudaí eile an méid sin. Ach beidh cabhair ag teastáil chuige sin! Tar go dtí an seisúin seo chun breis eolais maidir leis an ábhar go léir a fáil. It was amazing last year and we would like to do the same this year with your help. All we are asking for is a donation of a non-perishable item like for example a tin of peas, beans ,soup or a packet of biscuits with a long date on them. If you have anything that you think would be nice to bring (we all have that one gift which was given to us and then put in the back of a drawer cos it wasn’t quite what we wanted)if you think someone else could use it please bring it along. We will be putting baskets together again to raffle off. Please bring any item and /or non-perishable item into the office where either myself or one of the other ladies who works there will gladly take your donation.

Camp Juniors FC Padraic O Connell All Club squads are back up and running in the new Season. 5 teams competing in the Kerry Schoolboys League competitions U11 ~ U16 and another 4 teams from U7~U10 will be training and playing in Blitz format games with other clubs. A new Club Chairman, Chris Smailes from Dingle, and with 8 new coaches involved the 2015-16 season holds plenty of promise. Great thrills last weekend as our U13s advanced to the last 32 in the National Cup after a classic game against Clodiagh Rangers from Tipperary. The week before our U14s bounced back from National Cup exit with a strong win against Listowel B. U13 NATIONAL CUP - Round 3 – 07.11.15 CAMP JUNIORS FC 3 – 3 Clodiagh Rangers FC This bunch of lads, they have given us great games around the county since they started at U7 level but last Saturday, National Cup Round 3, there was no greater game than that enjoyed by a big crowd down at the Sports Field. In a heartstopping affair the JUNIORS were to come back from a goal down three times, once with only seconds on the clock, and it was all thanks to in-form striker Maurice O Connell (Castlegregory) who scored all three goals in another outstanding display. There were great individual games played all over the pitch, from keeper Gavin O Brien (Camp) right up to the right wing where Coleman O Meara (Camp) was in dynamic form. Even sub Owen Garvey (Castle) was to have a pivotal role in the game's outcome with superb penalty in the shoot-out. Man of the match though was reserved for the visitors as keeper James Griffin gave as good a display from a keeper as has been seen down in Camp. There was nothing beating him from distance. A tough day for
the RANGERS but they played their part in a great game and just didn't get the rub. We wish them all the best in the Nth Tipp League. With Lispole lad Cian Wright scoring the winning penalty it became a great afternoon for CAMP JUNIORS. For these lads and indeed their parents and friends...this will be a match to remember in the years ahead. A super thanks also to our parents for the fantastic refreshments served after the match and a big thanks also to our unofficial groundsman Tom Griffin who had the pitch in pristine condition FIXTURES - 14.11.15 U12 Div 2: Killorgan B v CAMP JUNIORS FC (KO @ 12 noon – Killorgan) U14 Div 2: CAMP JUNIORS FC v Park C (KO @ 11.00am – Camp Sportsfield) U16 Div 1: CAMP JUNIORS FC v Killarney Athletic (KO @ 12.30pm – Camp Sportsfield) TRAINING Training for all squads on the Astro (Camp Sportsfield) with times as follows, Tuesday - U16 (6.30 ~ 8.00pm) Wednesday - U13 (5.00 ~ 7pm), U14 (7 ~ 8pm) Thursday – U12/11 & U10/9 (6 ~ 7pm), Saturday - U7~U8 (10~11.30am) New players are always welcome and can join at any of the training nights. Ní mian le aon duine a bheith ag canrán, ach is baolach go gcaithfear, go leighisfear an galar. ‘Sé an galar atá ag déanamh tinnis dom agus do scata eile an ‘Béarlachas’ a chloistear ó chuid dos na meastóirí chluichí CLG ar an dteilifís. Ar an nDomhnach seo caite bhí ar chumas duine amháin oscalán briollach a spalpadh i gcúpla abairt. Bhí seansanna ‘misealta’,’faireáilte’ etc aige. Bhí bean aitheanta ar an radio agus ‘eolais’ aici in ionad ‘eolas’ agus san anál céanna ‘eolas’ in ionad ‘eolais’. Sin aineolas agat. Má tá béarlachas timpeall ann agus ar nóin tá i scata áiteanna, ba chóir dóibh siúd atá i gceannas ar chláracha radio agus teilifíse féachaint chuige ná beadh caint bhriollach bhacach acu siúd a bhíonn ar a gcláracha. Chuala duine agus sean- cheann é, go raibh duine ‘ag fáilt críonna’. Bíonn duine ag dul san aos nó an t-aos ag breith suas leis. Ní gá bacaint le aistriú. Tá sé in ard am ag ceannairí na gclár a bheith san airdeall agus comhairle a chur ar lucht na ndearmad. Is baolach ná fuil dada déanta leis an mbacaí seo a leigheas. Más ó Chorca Dhuibhne dhuit, ceartaigh na dearmaidí atá anois forleathan, mar ‘athair le’, nó ‘máthair le’. In ainm Dé éirígh as an gcaint sin. Fág an ‘le’ ar lár ar shon na síochana. Agus mar bhuile scoir, ‘tháinigh sé anuas nó, aníos’. Chuaidh sé suas, chuaidh sé sall agus tháinig sé anall. Tháinigh sé chugam. Nóra Ní Shéaghdha eagarthóir
Pádraig Ó Héalaí foilsithe ag An Sagart ‘Léargas mná óige ón míntír ar phobal agus ar shaol an Bhlascaoid a cuirtear i láthair sa leabhar seo. Cuntas é seo ó Nóra Ní Shéaghdha ó Pharóiste Múrach ar an saol a bhí ina timpeall ar an Oileán sa tréimhse a chaith sí ann ina múinteoir ó 1927 go 1934. Níorbh aon dearcadh rómánsúil a bhí ag Nóra ar an mBlascaod agus is go dochmúil a thug sí aghaidh air dá céad phost múinteoireachta. Luigh sí isteach leis an saol ann, áfach, agus de réir a chéile, thug sí gean don áit agus dá pobal agus chuaigh sí i dtaithí an Oileáin ionas gur thaitin go mór léi an seal a thug sí ar an taobh eile den Bhealach.
WEDNESDAY
Tugtar le chéile anseo aistí dá cuid ar ghnéithe de shaol an Oileáin a foilsíodh ina leabhar Thar Bealach Isteach (1941) agus scríbhinní eile léi a bhreac sí níos déanaí ina saol faoina taithí ar an mBlascaod. Le linn di bheith ag múineadh ann thionscain sí tuairisc de chineál eile freisin ar phobal an Oileáin mar chuir sí leanaí na scoile i mbun béaloideas a bhailiú óna muintir agus tá an bailiúchán sin leis i gcló anseo.’
