Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 18th April will be “Fences”. Directed by and starring Denzel Washington , this adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play centres on a black garbage collector named Troy Maxson in 1950s Pittsburgh. Bitter that baseball’s colour barrier was only broken after his own heyday in the Negro Leagues, Maxson is prone to taking out his frustrations on his loved ones. Both Washington and co-star Viola Davis won Tonys for their performances in the 2010 revival of the play. Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson round out the supporting cast. The following week on Tuesday 25th April the feature will be the Oscar winning coming-of-age drama “Moonlight”. The film is a chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young, African-American, gay man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. The film looks at three defining chapters in the life of Chiron as his epic journey to manhood is guided by the kindness, support and love of the community that helps raise him in a remarkable and brilliantly crafted piece of work.

tion of the Year award went to the Ashe family for their fundraising for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Nuala Moore’s ice swimming exploits were honoured with the award of Sportsperson of the Year, while the very gifted Elaine Kennedy was presented with the talent award after the critical acclaim heaped on her recent short film Uisce Beatha: Water Of Life. The hugely loved Dingle Food Festival was honoured with the Tourism Award while the Posthumous award went to the late Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Well done to all honoured and involved

Claire Galvin who was awarded Dingle Peninsula Person of the Year at the awards ceremony held in Danno’s on Friday March 31st. Claire has given tirelessly of herself over the years for the good of the community through her involvement with Feile na Bealtaine, Dingle Peninsula Tourism, local schools, sporting groups and more. It was appropriate that she attended the opening of the new playground in Dingle on the day of the ceremony as she was centrally involved the the Am Spraoi group who raised over €30,000 for the project. A wonderfully deserving recipient of the award who quietly contributes so much behind the scenes to make West Kerry a better place. Other category winners on the night were Jack Kennedy who won the award for the Young Person of the Year coming off the back of a wonderful performance at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, the Organisa6 West Kerry Live

Farming News

Louis Murchan

BPS 2017 With the closing date looming closer, farmers are now being encouraged to get their BPS application in, as soon as possible. Those who decide to leave it till the last minute may get a scare, if told that they will have to wait. But agricultural advisors are only human, and can only deal with so many people at a time. Many may not fully realise it, but those in GLAS must complete their application, on-line, and if they are not registered to complete this, om-line themselves, they will need the assistance of their advisor. For those not in GLAS, they should also be aware that this is the last year that a paper application can be submitted, and that from May 2018, all applications must be made on-line. This will not be a problem, even if you are not proficient with computers, as there is a large choice of advisory services and advisors available to work with you. This is the most important single application you will do, in any one year, so you should consider getting professional advice. Mistakes can be costly, and in the case of late applications or failure to submit the BPS, it can cost you your entire farm payment. The closing date is 15th May 2017, and there is no reason for this to be put back any later, so do not expect an extension. Get your BPS in, and get it in early. Don’t be left behind. Stocking Rates for 2017 Though most of you farm to excess, and try to keep as many cattle of sheep on your holding, some people are not able to hold more than the minimum stock, but you need to remember that you cannot go below the minimum required under the ANC stocking requirement. This is 0.15 Livestock Units (LU) per eligible hectare, for a 12-month period. This is equivalent to 1 ewe per ha; 1 heifer per 4 ha or 1 cow/bull/etc per 6.67 ha. This is what is known as the 12-Month requirement and this minimum stocking requirement must be kept for 12 continuous months, from 1st January to 31st December in any single year, with no break or reduction in these numbers. Should you be involved in Summer grazing, and keep no livestock over winter, this stocking requirement increases, as the minimum stocking requirement is reduced to 7 continuous months, again with no break. This time, the minimum requirement is 0.26 LU or 1.75 ewes per ha, 1 heifer/etc per 4 ha or 1 cow per 3.5 ha. If you have any difficulty with this, check with your advisor or your local DAFM office and they should be able to sort you out. The deadline for minimum stocking under the 7-Month rule is 31st may, and these animals would need to be kept on site until 31st December to meet the mandatory ANC requirements. Unregistered VAT Reclaim By Farmers It always amazes me the amount of farmers that don’t know that they are eligible to claim back VAT on certain items that they buy for the farm without having to be registered for Vat with the Revenue Commissioners. This is something that your accountant, your agri advisor or even yourself can fill out and send away and it is a nice little cheque to get during the farming year. I have had farmers who are doing their farm accounts each year and didn’t realise that they could claim VAT and haven’t done so in the past ten years or more. A farmer is only allowed to go back and claim four years for vat not claimed on. To make a VAT claim, the form used to apply for the VAT reclaim is the VAT 58 form which can be downloaded for free from www.revenue.ie. On the form the usual details are required like name, address, ppsn, telephone number, the amount of VAT being claimed and your bank details and the form needs to be signed. The minimum amount of money that can be claimed at any one time is €125. A farmer can make as many claims in the year as he/she wishes but as previously said one can only go back four years. On the form the details of the claim must be listed and period of the claim for which these invoices apply. Also on the last page of the form every invoice must be listed giving the name of the supplier, date and invoice reference number and the amount of VAT refundable. What is Eligible for VAT reclaim and what is not. The amount of VAT that is subject to the claim must relate to 1. Construction, extension, alteration or reconstruction of a building or structure which is designated for use solely or mainly for the purposes of a farming business. 2. Fencing, drainage or reclamation of any land for use for the purpose

10 West Kerry Live

of a farming business 3. Construction , erection or installation of qualifying equipment for the purpose of micro-generation of electricity for use solely or mainly for the purposes of a farming business being taxed incurred on or after 1st January 2012 and where such building, structure land or qualifying equipment is for use in a farming business carried in by me for a period of not less than one year commencing on the date the tax was incurred. What is Not Refundable for VAT. 1. Repairs to farm buildings, structures and farm roadways 2. Outlay on roadways to dwelling house 3. Mobile equipment and machinery 4. Repair, service and maintenance of equipment and machinery 5. ESB supply 6. Fuel, oil, diesel 7. Silage covers, Medicines, weed killers etc. Points to note • when filling out the Vat reclaim form the original invoices must be sent away with the form and it is a good idea to send away a copy of the invoices as well because this will speed up the processing of your application. • Always send your application by registered post and if you haven’t heard anything back from the revenue within two months there must be a problem. • You have to be doing your annual tax returns and have all your tax affairs up to date in order to claim back VAT. • Any VAT that is due to be paid will be automatically paid into your bank account. • Make sure all invoices have your name and address on them and are clearly marked paid with the relevant amount of VAT clearly listed • is for.

Make sure that the invoice clearly shows what the VAT reclaim

• Make sure a sequential number which uniquely identifies the invoice. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programme for Foresters announced. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine launched a new Continuous Professional Development Programme (CPD) at the Society of Irish Foresters (SIF) AGM in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, Laragh, Co Wicklow. The advantages to professional foresters of such a comprehensive CPD programme are numerous, including the maintenance of professional competence; enhancement of existing knowledge and skills and the opportunity to develop new ones; the creation of a structure of accreditation for training/information events organised by third parties; and lastly will help to identify emerging issues in terms of knowledge and skills that need to be addressed. The establishment of this CPD structure will upgrade the SIF’s current system and is included in the Knowledge Transfer and Information Action measure of the Forestry Programme 2014 – 2020. This investment appears to be justified, given the proposed investment of €482m in new forestry development over the coming years. This includes planting of 44,000ha of new forests and building almost 700km of forest roads; there are also schemes and measures for thinning, conservation of native woodlands, agro-forestry and growing timber for energy. Election of James Healy as New President of Macra James Healy must be congratulated as the newly elected 36th President of Macra na Feirme, who competed against Odile Evans in a hard-fought campaign. His predecessor must also be recognised for his significant contributions to social and personal development to the farming community, and all that this entails. Macra is a very influential organisation, nationally, and worth a look for those looking to get involved in agricommunity activism. It is more than “just a bit of craic”, but has that to offer, and is open to farmer and non-farmer alike, be you living in rural Ireland, or be from “the town”. The three new vice-presidents, Sharon Corcoran, Cara O’Mahony and Tom O’Donoghue who will take up their positions alongside the president-elect at Macra’s AGM in May. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Egg-ceedingly Good News about Eggs! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Since the domestication of the chicken more than 4,000 years ago, people in almost every culture have been enjoying and nourishing themselves with the egg. Easter occurs in Springtime, a period of new life and renewed growth thus it is not surprising that the egg - from which life begins - is somewhat of a celebrity in both religious and culinary history. Hens begin laying more eggs during the brighter, warmer days of Spring validating the great symbolism of the egg in so many traditions. From ancient pagan history to modern day Christianity and in every known culture - the egg represents fertility, birth and new life. Not surprisingly, the egg has the nutritional profile to support its lofty status. Eggs are an egg-cellent source of vitamin K and B vitamins including thiamin (B1), folate, choline, biotin and B12. Rich also in selenium, vitamin D and protein. Not so long ago eggs were struck off the menu by those concerned with rising cholesterol levels. At the time of their ousting, public health experts and the medical profession believed that dietary cholesterol was an important contributory factor in the rising incidences of cardiovascular disease. However, as more research unfolds, instead of contributing to heart disease, the total nutritional content of whole eggs actually lower the risk. The most up-to-date research not only reverses the cholesterol myth but also highlights that saturated animal fat (low in eggs) in the diet, and not dietary cholesterol, has a much greater impact on blood cholesterol levels. Eggs contain many heart-friendly nutrients. Most notably betaine and choline. Betaine can reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid derived from animal protein. Homocysteine can damage the blood vessel walls and contribute to clot formation increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Homocysteine tends to be higher in people who eat a lot of animal protein and consume few leafy vegetables, beans or fruit - which provide folic acid and B vitamins that can help the body of rid itself of homocysteine. Choline a key nutrient for cell membranes, neurotransmitters and brain function. Choline is also involved in the metabolism of homocysteine as are the B vitamins making the egg a superfood for the both the heart and the brain. It is important to choose eggs that are local, fresh and preferably organic or chemical-free. Commercially raised chicks are fed cheap, processed grains, GM maize or GM soy. It literally costs chickenfeed to feed a chicken for mass production their eggs. Pesticides and antibiotics are routinely given to these birds to deal with the risks of their unnatural environment. The chickens convert much of the starch from this chicken feed into saturated fat. The ingested pesticide and antibiotic residues are stored in that fat, much of which ends up in the yolk of the egg. In 2012 EU laws banned the use of traditional battery cages in commercial egg production, but even without the cages conditions remain dire when it comes to the diet, health and welfare of commercial chickens and hens. Organic hens and those reared freely on the farm down the road, whose diet is a natural fare of unadulterated seeds and insects produce much healthier eggs. Since these birds are free from crowded conditions, antibiotic use is usually unnecessary and pesticides are rarely needed. When free to peck their own food, chickens and hens favour insects, grains and seeds from their native surroundings, which ultimately makes for a happier hen and a healthier egg! Perhaps this is why the chicken crossed the road! The best method of storing eggs is point down and in the carton, which protects the porous shell from light and odours. kept cool but not chilled. In warmer weather, eggs can be stored in the fridge. Before cooking, particularly when baking, take them out of the fridge for at least 30mins before use. Poaching and boiling, either hard or soft, are the best ways to enjoy eggs because it heats the egg at lower temperatures. High temperatures reached during frying alter the heat-sensitive structures in the egg, rendering them harmful to our health. As does many of the oils in which they are fried. Good quality eggs are economical, versatile and healthy. They are Nature’s answer to fast food! A little thought into the source, storage and preparation of eggs will connect the health benefits with the symbolism of Mother Nature’s great gift - and that’s worth celebrating at Easter and indeed, the months ahead! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Wednesday, March 25, 1987. Collected 10 sketches for the ‘Ireland’ poem from Nick Annino which cost £100 and brought them to Stan Phelan, the printer, but he’s away on holidays for another week. Met Arthur Apsimon of Southampton university - he knows Peter Woodman of UCC and is touring the area with a group of students. Drove to Killarney and met Frank Lewis in his new art gallery. Raced to the train station and just made the 2.30 to Dublin - return ticket cost £31. Arrived Dublin 6.20.

Thursday, March 26. Spent two hours in the Ashworth and Thompson warehouse in Great Strand Street looking at framing equipment and bought £166 worth of moulding which will be delivered to Tralee tomorrow. Spent the following several hours visiting framing shops and art galleries. Then met Noel Kissane of the National Library and we went for a mug of tea in Powers hotel. We discussed the reproduction of maps, photos and other graphic material from the National Gallery, copyright etc. Took the late train from Heuston and home by 11pm.

Friday, March 27. Another cold, wet and mild day. Very stormy weather in Britain and people killed by falling trees and walls. Peter Woodman called to the house - he was with a group from a Norwegian University and we talked about the excavations at Ferriters Cove this summer.

Saturday, March 28. Heavy showers of hail with a hint of snow and very cold. Met Paudie Fitzgerald and we went over the programme for his trade association outing next week. Spent all afternoon with Breandán MacGearailt and we talked politics, grants, committees, Blaskets, fishing, scandal, mischief-making, shafting and other such pleasantries.

Sunday, March 29.

Meeting of youth club magazine committee but Neasa Murphy was the only one to turn up.

Thursday, April 2. Left home for Limerick at 7.50am and arrived around 9.50. Called to Tony Clarke’s framing shop in Thomas Street - for a meeting which Ogie Moran had organsied. Tony is a young, dynamic businessman, fast talking, smooth and direct and we talked about the framing business. I persuaded him to take me on for two weeks work experience at the end of April.

Friday, April 3. Called to see Tommy Devane, the Social Welfare officer who is down with thyroid trouble at present, just to tell him of my experience of thyroid problems these past 10 years. Off to Tralee again and went to the nursery near Ardfert for 2 dozen griselinia plants. Then got the car taxed at the library. Then had a photo session in the library - as president of the KAHS I accepted a model of a currach, made by Michael O’Leary, for the library - then handed over a cheque for £100 to Fr. Prior of the Dominicans for their celebration fund and then opened The Irish Face exhibition - more photographs - about 70 people present.

Saturday, April 4. Took rubbish to the dump, then planted the griselinia inside the boundary wall to give shelter to that area but it will take years to be effective. Watched Ireland beat Wales in Cardiff Arms Park.

Wednesday, April 8. Archbishop McNamara passed away after fighting a losing battle with cancer for several years. I’ll never forget our society’s trip to Rome in 1984 where we presented a model of the Brendan boat and a model of a naomhóg, made by Eddie Hutch, to Pope John Paul 11. It was the St Brendan year and the models were mounted on wood in perspex cases. Louis Mulcahy, who sends pottery overseas, encased the perspex and wood in a kind of heavy styrofoam so that they were now twice the original size. We had a job getting them through customs in Rome but after a lot of pidgin Italian and cries of ‘Papa’ the customs officers sent us on our way - glad to be shut of us. Anyway, the night before we went to the Vatican I began to ‘unpack’ the models in my bedroom. It was a hell of a job and left a mountain of fractured styrofoam all over the place. Then Bishop McNamara and County librarian Kathleen Browne called to my room to discuss the next day’s Vatican programme. When the bishop saw the styrofoam all over the place he said, “ Is there a bed in here, Ted?”. There was - but it was buried!

Thursday, April 9.

Summertime begins but it’s winter outside - hailstones and bitter north-westerly winds. After 11 Mass met Mary Hussey who works for solicitor Peter Callery. I had asked her, some time ago, to do some typing for the youth club magazine and told her that it may be delayed. Met Tim Collins in the street and we had a bit of a chat.

Attended a meeting of the KAHS and the planning dept. of Kerry county council in Tralee this afternoon. John McElligott and Lillian Carmody were there for the council. We discussed the latest plan by the state to purchase the Great Blasket not that Taylor Collings has agreed to ‘hand over’ his 900 acres for £50,000 or so. We discussed the National Monuments Bill and the re-opening of the Skelligs. Not a lot achieved and it was really just a talking shop.

Monday, March 30.

Friday, April 10.

Drove to Tralee - got some farm chemicals for Tom Sheehy then drove to the garden centre near Ardfert but it was closed. Drove back to Tralee and collected the picture moulding which had been delivered to Combined Fruit. Letter from Archbishop McNamara - probably his secretary - expressing thanks for my letter to the archbishop who hasn’t long to live, we’re told.

Wednesday, April 1. The Fool’s Day but no tricks played on anyone at home. It was different in the schools - the girls all turned up in the Brother’s classrooms. The boys went as far as the Convent but were chased away by Sister Stella! 14 West Kerry Live

Met Peter Callery in Garveys - he’s finished with the Brendan Festival but it will go ahead this year despite a debt of £3,000 from last year. The first prizes in the new National Lottery spin-the-wheel were won on the Late, Late Show tonight - the top prize was £25,000.

Saturday, April 11. Framed three pictures for Brother Lynch and took them to the CBS. The charge was £46 but reduced it to £40 as he was my first customer. He smiled and said “We’ll make it fifty!”.

What are your Interests: Running , fitness, mental health promotion and raising awareness of the issues around it. There are many mental health issues that need to be addressed, for example ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression and addiction. It’s no longer taboo to discuss mental health issues and people should be aware that there is help available - talking to your GP and locally available services such as Cuan Counselling. Why did you choose to fundraise for Gairdín Mhuire: Again it’s about raising awareness of facilities in the community like the essential services that are available locally such as those for older people in Gairdín Mhuire. What about your running history: I started in 2013 having not been into fitness beforehand. I began training with Shane Finn and Mark Evans who encouraged me and researched how fitness could help my own mental health. I’ve been running ever since! On May 4th Donny will undertake to run over 200 miles to raise awareness of mental health issues and raise funds for Gaidín Mhuire & Cuan Counselling

Smoked Haddock, Pea and Baby Gem Lettuce, Pea Cream Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is a great recipe for a starter or light lunch but if you want it for dinner increase the size of the portion to 150g-200g. Unfortunately, the most difficult part of this dish is finding naturally smoked haddock. You normally find smoked fish which is bright orange in colour which means it has either been dipped in a dye or the has had the dye sprayed on to give a smoked effect. It is worth asking your fish supplier to get you naturally smoked fish which will be have a pale yellow or golden colour, it will be slightly more expensive but far tastier and it goes without saying that it will be far healthier for you. For the rest of the dish you might find the idea of cooking lettuce a little strange but if you get some nice baby gem and toss it in the pan for two minutes or so you will find it really adds to the dish.

ted spoon remove half of the pea and shallot mixture from the pot and put it in a blender. Pour some of the milk from this pot to the blender and add the crème fraîche. Blend this to a fine purée/cream and season with salt and white pepper. At this stage, the fish should be cooked. Turn off the heat and leave it for a few minutes until you finish off the rest of the dish. Take the pot with the peas in it, and add a little butter and the baby gem lettuce. Cook this over a medium heat for about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. To serve Put some of the pea and lettuce in the centre of the plate. Spread some of the pea cream to one side. Carefully remove the fish and place it on top. Sprinkle with finely chopped chives. Enjoy!!!

Soccer: Result: Mitchel’s Avenue 0 - 0 Castlegregory Celtic. A very solid away point against the current league leaders, especially given the long break since our last game (mid Feb!) and the number of Castle players injured or unable to make the game on Sunday. Castle set out to sit deep and compact which worked very well as the home side were limited to long balls and half chances, with the one clear cut opportunity for the home side coming from a short back pass. Castle played on the break and Micheál O Dowd came close to grabbing all 3 points on a number of occasions while Damien Finn also went close with a headed effort from an Enda Whelan free. Overall, a good game of soccer where both defences were on top and, with at least 3 more games between these sides in both cup and league to come, it bodes well for the standard of future games. Best for Castle on the day were Micheál O’Dowd, and the back 4 of Dillon Daniels Conor Boden, Enda Whelan and Dominic Spillane. The Brandon Bay HM/10k: entries are flying in for this year’s event with almost a quarter of last years total signed up already!! We are really encouraging local businesses & accommodation owners to please share the event on social media and on websites etc to help get as many people to come to the area as possible for the weekend of the festival. Hopefully this year’s event will be the biggest one yet. Remember also, monies raised from the event are for the local soccer club and also for various chosen charities each year (last year was Crumlin Children’s Hospital among others) so it is a not-for-profit event. Looking forward to Saturday 8th July already! Castlegregory GAA: The Seniors drew with Sneem/Derryname on a score of 0-10 each, played at home on Saturday evening. Aon Sceal? Poetry and Storytelling in West Kerry Paul Duffy Recently in Ó Cathains Bar (Kanes), Ballyferriter, myself and Justin Mc Carthy discussed poetry over a pint or two. “Are you still writing Poetry” says Justin. “Not much” I replied “It tortures the soul”! We both laughed. It was the start of a conversation that continued when we met again a week or so later. I arrived in with my latest poem in my back pocket. “Have a read of that” I said. Justin read my poem and then commented that it is a pity we don’t have a regular forum in West Kerry for people like ourselves who like to ‘do a bit of writing’. The seed was sown. We approached Donal Kane and he agreed to facilitate us on the third Wednesday of every month, our first meeting being on 19th April in “Siar O Thuaidh” Kanes Bar beginning at 8.30pm. Failte roimh cách, all welcome. On each night we hope to have a special guest followed by an ‘open mic’ session whereby those attending will have an opportunity to put their names forward to do a reading. This will be restricted to approximately 5 minutes per person. Although it is not a singers club (the singers club, Club An Mháistir meet at the same venue on the first Wednesday of every month) we may invite someone to sing a song or two, or maybe play some music on the night. Contributors are welcome to read their own material or a favourite piece from another author and in a language of their choice. Our guest for the opening night on 19th April will be Paul O’Colmáin. Paul is a poet, musician, songwriter and visual artist who lives in West Cork. He is a regular contributor of poems in both Irish and English to journals and anthologies. He has been selected for Poetry Ireland Introductions series 2017 and a book of Haiku poetry “The Silence Unravelling” is due out this summer with Eblana Press. Many people from this area would know Paul personally as he lived in Dun Chaoin for ten years before moving to West Cork. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated, look forward to seeing you on the night.

Castlegregory Community Support Required to Meet Playground Goal

Planning permission has been granted for Castlegregory playground, but community must raise substantial funds to make playground a reality. Playgrounds are an ideal place for children to develop physically and socially, but they can also help communities grow and thrive. A social meeting place, playgrounds are an attractive feature in any community. They show that young families are welcome and can breathe life into sleepy villages. In summer destinations like Castlegregory, a playground is also an important economic development that promotes tourism to the area. For these reasons, a playground has been much desired in Castlegregory. Home to many young families and host to thousands of holidaymakers each summer, the lack of a playground has been sorely felt over the years. After several years of discussion, planning permission has been granted and fundraising is formally underway! The plans for the playground have been drafted. Features include a 26 West Kerry Live

number of climbing structures, slides, roundabout, swings and equipment designed for children with disabilities. There will also be a covered area to the front of the playground, so the area can be enjoyed in all seasons. Once built, the playground may be one of the finest in the County! In late 2016 planning permission was granted to develop a playground in the former Gregory house site, directly across from the Spar car park. In order to make the playground a reality, the village must raise €195,000 to safely demolish the existing structure and then build a playground. In early 2017 the Castlegregory Community Playground Committee formed and began fundraising efforts. The Committee has submitted an application for EU Leader Funding and the Committee is hopeful that the grant will cover a majority of the costs, but at least €30,000 must be raised locally. It’s a big number, but the community is confident it can be raised this year. In the past 4 months fundraising efforts have included a family disco, St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a quiz night and bake sale. The Committee also sent letters out to 600 households in the community, which netted many generous donations. While an impressive €4500 has been raised thus far, there is still a long way to go. The Playground Committee encourages you to join the fundraising activities planned for this spring and summer and to give generously to this important development, which will benefit our community for decades to come. Upcoming events include: Easter egg hunt and breakfast - Man auction - Summer festival - Grand prize raffle - Family discos - And lots more! Please consider attending any of these events. If you would like to organize a fund raising event, please contact the Committee (castlegregoryplay@gmail.com). Full plans for the playground and fundraising updates can be viewed in the window of Gregory house, across from the Spar. Donations can be made through: Envelope drop in the Spar / Castlegregory Information Office / iDonate.ie (search for “Castlegregory Community Playground Fund”) For more information, visit Facebook.com/CGCplayground.

Emily Mure set for John Benny’s New York City native and former Galway busker, Emily Mure, will be coming to Dingle to perform in John Benny’s on Wednesday April 26th where she will be accompanied by Eilís Kennedy. Emily first entered the performing world as a classical oboist, playing in some of New York’s biggest concert halls as a teenager. In college, she started writing songs and playing guitar, which gave her a new creative freedom. Drawn to folk and Irish Traditional music, she attended a summer music program at The University of Limerick. She fell in love with Ireland and decided to later move to Galway, where she lived for 6 months, making her living playing music on the streets. Emily now tours Ireland once a year.

Plant Hire & Ground Works No Job too Big or Small

Her lyrical melodies and voice take on a similar dark and reedy quality to that of her first instrument. Emily’s songwriting has been recognized in prestigious national competitions and has been described as “unpretentious, straight-and-true songwriting that draws from contemporary folk, acoustic country and intimate chamber pop”

Memories of Kerry AJ Dehany Look at you, lovely, licked & spiffy in sunlight. Kerry listens to the rain, the wild wintry wind scattering the silk white ashes of her cloud or the sun exploding in the islands of her eyes. Go from me, dear. Squinting my face to the fierce sea, the bracing surge of the Atlantic heaving upon the cold rock wet with news of our cousins far away. Driving down the coastal road shivering in the mist; I was a dry stone waller at the edge of a cliff in the sky, milk & the taste of butter in my mouth. We were light passing into rain. This high up you can see your face reflected in the moon. The last words she said before her eyes closed & her tongue fell still, her eyes wise with light & love, she said, softly, “I can see angels

Coiste Forbartha an Phobail, Baile na nGall.

áitiúla a fheabhsú í gconaí, ag cur bláthanna, ag peinteáil fallaí, ag gearradh an féir ar thaobh na boithre srl.. Thug foireann an Scéim Soisialta na Tuaithe agus roinnt daoine áitiúla an-tacaíocht duinn leis an obair seo. Beidh fáilte is fiche roimh cabhair ar bith.

Bunaíodh Coiste Forbartha an Phobail, Ceantar Baile na nGall i 2014 nuair a rinneadh suirbhé ar muintir na háite. Rinneadh torthaí an suirbhé seo a phlé ag crinniú poiblí agus roghnaíodh coiste. ‘Sé aidm an choiste seo ná an ceantar a chur chun cinn agus é a fheabhsú do muintir na háite, lán aimsearach, páirt aimsearach agus do turasóirí agus cuairteóirí chuig na háite leis. Tá an choiste ag diriú ar ceantar Baile na nGall ag tógaint An Mhuiríoch agus An Bóthar Buí san áireamh. Is ar áiseanna, seirbhisí, an timpeallacht, teanga agus an chultúr atá an béim.

Villages appearance: We have been improving the appearance of the local villages by clearing green areas and planting lawn grass and flowers, mowing sides of streets/local roads/ditches, painting walls and some buildings, and this will continue. The local Scéim Soisialta na Tuaithe (SST) team have provided a great deal of assistance in addition to the efforts of some local volunteers. Wanted: more volunteers.

Coiste Forbartha an Phobail, Ceantar Baile na nGall, was set up in 2014 following a survey completed by local people. The survey results were considered at a public meeting at which a Coiste was also elected. The aim of An Choiste is to improve the living experience for local inhabitants, full-time and regular part-time, of the area and the tourist experience for visitors to the area. The area of focus for An Choiste is broadly that enclosed by the roads joining the local three villages of An Mhuiríoch, Baile na nGall and An Bóthar Buí with the emphasis on the appearance of the place, the facilities and services available, the local economy and language and heritage.

Glannadh Mór: Éagraimid thart ar sé ‘Glannadh Mór’ gach aon bhliain ar na bóithre áitiúla, na sraideanna agus ar na dtráigh. Tá sé thar a bheith tabhachtach ár gceantar a choiméad go h-aoibheann i rith na bliana agus go h-áirithe i rith an tsamhraidh. Bíonn cabhair uainn i gconaí agus arís tá fáilte is fiche roimh gach éinne comhoibriú linn. Clean - Ups: We organise and undertake about 6 clean-ups of the local roads, streets and beaches each year. It is vital to have the area looking its best, especially during summer months and main holiday periods. Wanted: definitely more volunteers. Pobal ar Aire: Tá sé seo bunaithe le deanaí le thart ar 40 baill. Tá sé thar a bheith tabhachtach ó thaobh sábháltacht muintir na háite. Bíonn fáilte roimh baill nua am ar bith.

Cad tá á dheanamh againn ó 2014? Ionad Spóirt: Go dtí seo bhíomar ag díriú isteach ar an gCúirt Cispheil i Muiríoch atá críochnaithe anois le cúirt cispheil breá nua, cuairt leadóige/sacar, le áit aoibhinn chun French Boules a imirt díreach in aice leis. Is iontach iad na h-áiseanna seo do muintir na h-áite idir óg is aosta. €23,000 an costas a bhí air.

Community Alert: We have set this up recently, with over 40 listed participants. An important local security feature for all, we welcome new participants.

Táimíd fíor bhuíoch as na deontaisí ar fad a fuaireamar agus a chabhraigh linn an tionscnamh seo a thabhart chun chríoch. Míle buíochas do Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí, Údarás na Gaeltachta (foireann SST san áireamh), CFCD agus na deontaisí fial flaithiúil a thánaigh ó muintir na h-áite. Míle Buíochas do Gearóid MacGearailt as an sár obair a dhein sé chun an tionscail a phleanáil agus a chríochnú.Tá sé thar a bheith tabhachtach anois duine a bheith i gceannas ar an Ionad Spóirt nua seo chun na h-imeachtaí éagsúla a eagrú agus bheith mar bainnisteóir ar an áit agus chun deimhin a dheanamh go mbainfidh gac aon duine sult agus sásamh as. Má tá suim ag aon duine, téir i dteaghmháil le ball den Choiste.

Bus Éireann Service: With support from local representatives this service has been restored with a statement that it will be retained into the future. More recent communications have confirmed that, as a PSO service, it is not under threat.

So, what have we been doing since 2014? Multi-sports Facility: Our main project to date has been the restoration and expansion of the old derelict basketball court area in Muiríoch into a state-of-the-art basketball court, tennis court, 5-aside pitch, mainly for younger people, with a boules/horseshoe yard nearby for the notso-young. This project has just been completed at a cost of c.€23,000, and the facilities are beginning to be used. The project was made possible by the support of Údarás (including SST team), Kerry County Council, CFCD, a significant local donation and some other donations. Míle Buíochas to Gearóid MacGearailt for his great contribution to making it happen. It is a huge asset to the area. What we need now is organised use of it, so any interested parties, please contact us.

Seirbhís Bus Éireann: Le tacaíocht ionadaí áitiúla, tá an seirbhís seo thar n-ais le deimhin tugtha go bhfanfaidh sé.

Féile an Phráta: D’éagraíomar an féile áitiúil iontach le ocht mbliain anuas agus is iontach an féile é chun muintir, scoileanna agus ceantair na háite a thabhairt le chéile. Ó thosnaigh sé, tá Féile an Phráta clúdaithe ag RTÉ ar a gclár ‘Gliondar’, i 2015, ‘West Coast Cooking le Rachel Allen agus ar an BBC i 2015 ag Simon Reeve. Is fógraíocht den scoth é seo don áit agus táimid ag súil go raghaidh an féile seo ó neart go neart. Chun é seo a chintiú áfach, tá a thuilleadh tacaíocht ag teastáil agus daoine chun páirt a ghlacadh sa chomortas seo agus chun cabhair a thabhairt chun é a eagrú ina paróistí éagsúla. Féile an Phráta: We have organised and ran this great local festival for the past 8 years. Hugely successful in getting local communities together, in promoting growing healthy home vegetables, in engaging schoolchildren in good food. It has caught the imagination of ‘the media’ with the RTE Gliondar programme in 2014, and Rachel Allen’s West Coast Cooking programme and BBC’s Simon Reeve programme coverage in 2015. Millions of people have been brought face to face with our locality through this exposure. You could not buy this type of advertising for the area. Wanted: more growers participating in each parish and more organisers to run it.

Ionad: Is le Choiste Forbartha an Phobail anois, Ionad na Seanóirí/Triomadóir í Muiríoch. Táimid ag déanamh roinnt mhaith obair riachtanach air faoi láthair agus nuair atá sé sin críochnaithe beidh fáilte is fiche roimh grupaí aitiúla éagsúla í gcóir ranganna, cruinnithe is a leithéad. Tá áiseanna an triomadóir fós ann leis, má tá suim ag aon duine no ghrúpa an seirbhís sin a bhunú arís no úsáid d’aon saghas a bhaint as an Ionad, téir í dteagmháil linn le’d thoil.

Cad tá romhainn amach mar Choste?

Ionad: We have recently ‘inherited’ Ionad na Seanoiri/’The Laundrette’ in Muirioch, which has been unused for a couple of years. We are in the process of giving it a facelift and doing some essential maintenance. We have retained the laundry equipment with a view to restarting some form of laundry service in addition to making An Ionad available to local groups for classes, rehearsals etc. and perhaps for other uses. We would welcome all suggestions towards the future use of the facility which could be a further huge asset to the community. Anyone with a bright idea, please contact us.

A thuilleadh feabhsucháin i rith na blianta díreach romhainn. Plean dul chun cinn na h-áite: Táimid ag smaoineamh fé láthair ar plean cuimsitheach a chur le chéile le cabhair muintir na h-áite do mhuintir na h-áite agus an cheanntar. Idir an dá linn: Táimid chun diriú ar chúpla tionscnaimh beaga • Carchlós: Táimid ag obair le Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí maidir le carchlós ceart a fhorbairt ag Trá na Muirí. • Balla an sruthán i mBaile na nGall: Táimid ag iarraidh cuma an balla seo a fheabhsú agus é a dhéanamh níos sabháilte. • Cursaí slándála: Beimid ag obair le Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí chun an cheantar a dhéanamh níos sabháilte. • Abhainn na h-Áite: Teastaíonn uainn obair le muintir na Muirí agus

Baile na nGall maidir le cuma agus feidhmiú na h-abhainn agus chun an baol maidir le tuilleadh a laghdú. And What’s Next?: We plan more improvements over the next few years. Development Plan: We are at the early stages of considering whether we can work with our supporting agencies to compile a comprehensive plan for the area to focus our effort over the next few years. If this proceeds, we will be back to look for the input of the community into this planning process which will take some time to complete. Meantime: we will undertake a few smaller projects to maintain some momentum: • Ionad: Finish facelift and get some initial uses for it. • Car Park: Work with Kerry County Council to facilitate development of a proper carpark at Muirioch beach this year. • Baile na nGall Stream Wall: Make this a more appealing, safer feature of the village. • Safety Issues: Work with Kerry County Council to address a number of safety issues in our area during the year. • Village Streams: Work with local residents to have a long term solution to the appearance and proper functioning of the streams in Muiríoch and Baile na nGall, especially to reduce the danger of flooding as much as possible. Mar Choiste, Táimid fíor bhuíoch don tacaíocht iontach a bhfaighimid ó comhlachtaí na h-áite, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí, Comharchumann Forbartha Corcha Dhuibhne agus muintir na háite. In all of these initiatives, we receive huge support from local agencies, Údarás, Kerry County Council, Comharchumann Forbartha Corcha Dhuibhne and local people, both financial and physical. Chun cabhrú linn mar choiste na h-aidhmeanna ar fad atá luaite againn a bhaint amach agus na tionscnaimh áitiúla a chríochnú, tá tacaíocht an phobail fíor-thabhachtach. Ma tá suim ag éinne cabhrú i slí ar bith téir i dteagmháil le ball den choiste agus beidh míle fáilte romhat. To enable us further achieve our aim and to complete projects we have in mind, we need community support. Volunteers to join An Choiste, volunteers to assist with projects, and donations to meet some of the costs involved. Please contact any member of An Choiste if you want to get involved or if you wish to make a donation, big or small. - Paula O’Brien; Seáinín MacEoin; Rochie Houlihan; Geoff Penny; Denis Power; Aengus Murphy

Restless Legs Syndrome Eddie O’Grady Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a nervous system resulting in an urge to move the legs. Because it usually interferes with sleep, it also is considered a sleep disorder. The condition causes an uncomfortable, “itchy,” “pins and needles,” or “creepy crawly” type feeling in the legs. The sensations are usually worse at rest, especially when lying or sitting. The symptoms are generally worse in the evening and at night. The severity of RLS symptoms varies from mild to intolerable. Symptoms can come and go and vary in severity. For some people, symptoms may lead to severe sleep disturbance at night, which can significantly impair their quality of life.

ropathy . Treating these conditions often gives some relief from RLS symptoms. Some types of medications including antinausea drugs, antipsychotic drugs, some antidepressants, and cold and allergy medications containing sedating antihistamines, may exacerbate symptoms. Some women experience RLS during pregnancy, especially in the last trimester. These symptoms usually go away within a month after delivery. Other factors, including alcohol use and sleep deprivation, may trigger symptoms or make them worse. Diagnosis of Restless Legs Syndrome There is no medical test to diagnose RLS; however, doctors may use blood tests or other diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions. The diagnosis of RLS is mainly based on a patient’s symptoms and answers to questions concerning family history of the condition, the presence of other symptoms/ medical conditions, use of medications, sleeplessness.

Dopaminergic drugs, which act on the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain; Mirapex, Neupro, and Requip , levodopa. Benzodiazepines, a class of sedative medications, may be used to help with sleep, but they can cause daytime drowsiness. Narcotic pain relievers may be used for severe pain. Anticonvulsant drugs such as Tegretol, Lyrica, Neurontin, and Horizant. Although there is no cure for restless legs syndrome, current treatments can help control the condition, decrease symptoms, and improve sleep.

Who Gets Restless Legs Syndrome? Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may affect up to 10% of the population. It affects both sexes, but is more common in women. It may begin at any age, but most people affected are middle-aged or older. RLS is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed. This is especially true if the symptoms are intermittent or mild.

Treatment for Restless Legs Syndrome Treatment of RLS is targeted at easing the symptoms. In people with mild to moderate restless legs syndrome, lifestyle changes, such as beginning a regular exercise program, establishing regular sleep patterns, and eliminating or decreasing the use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, may be helpful.

Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome In most cases, doctors do not know the cause of restless legs syndrome; however, they suspect that genetics plays a role. Nearly half of people with RLS also have a family member with the condition. Factors other than genetic associated with the development of restless legs syndrome can include certain chronic diseases and medical conditions. These include iron deficiency, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and peripheral neu-

1. An mó spíce ar choróin Dhealbh na Saoirse atá lasmuigh do Nua Eabhrach?

Seo chughainn an Cháisc. An raibh an Carrghas á dheanamh agat ar aon rud i mbliana? Deirtear linn go bhfuil sásamh aigne ag baint leis an gCarrghas a dhéanamh ar bhia, deoch, formad nó cúlchaint. Is áisiúíl an t-abhar é an Carghas le feabhas a chur ort féin nó ar dhaoine eile. Is beart beag a bhíonn i gceist ag duine. Is doigh liom gur beag an aird a bheadh ar an gcaint seo ag scata. Is dócha gur é a dhéarfaidís cathain agus cad ar a dheinis féin an carrghas. Is dócha nach tógtha ar daoine san a rá ach geallaim dhuit gur mó carrghas a dheineas agus gur mó go mór fós an méid a bhriseas. Mar sin is dána an t-éadon a bheadh ormsa a bheith a moladh do dhaoine eile conas agus cad ar a dhéanfadh siad carrghas. Is dócha go bféadfá a rá gur mó duine a dheineann carrghas le meachain a chailliúint. Ní ar shon Dé ach ar a son féin. Ná féadfadh duine an dá cheann a chur san áireamh. An é go bhfuilimíd imithe chun an phota ar fad agus ná fuil do dhia againn ach an sparán teann. Is dócha gur fearr an sparán teann ná an sparán folamh. Cabhraíonn carrghas nó a leithéid le smacht a chur ar do mhianta go mór mhor na droch-mhianta rud a chabhraíonn le duine ionrabháil níos éasca sa tsaol agus thar aon ní, a mianta a shmachtú níos fusa.

Richard Williams GAA.--- What a wonderful exhibition we were treated to on Sunday last in Croke Park with our Kerry heroes and indeed the Dubs too going all out in a classic game of good traditional attacking gaelic football made all the sweeter with that nail biting one point victory. The day was all the more interesting from a Dingle point of view with Mikie and Paul Geaney featuring prominently in general play and on the scoresheet as well. Comhgairdeachas o croi dibh a bhuachailli agus don fhoireann go leir agus don bainistiocht comh maith ina measc muinteoiri aitiuil Eamonn agus Pocko. This Saturday its the turn of the under 21 team and our good wishes to them especially the large contingent of Dingle and Gaeltacht players on the Kerry panel this year. Children Playground. The new children playground at the back of the Charthouse opened recently and has proved a most popular location for young children availing of the fine weather over the past week to sample the wide variety of facilities on site. Another great amenity to add to the ever expanding list of attractions for visitors and locals alike here in West Kerry. Tidy Towns. Despite the small turnout of volunteers for the County Clean Up last Saturday we managed to pick up 20 full bags of litter from the main roads leading to town. We appeal to anybody interested in helping to continue the effort in their own areas to contact Patrick Sheehy Spar or Risteard Mac Liam 0868641340 for bags and collection details. The Tidy Towns Work Evenings recommence on Easter Monday and each Monday thereafter meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. A number of new projects are planned but we need people to help us otherwise even the routine maintenance will fall behind acceptable levels again this year. From experience I can say that the involvement in Tidy Towns is most rewarding and enjoyable too. Events. Well Easter really kicks off the main Tourist Season here in Corca Dhuibhne and will be closely followed by Feile Na Bealtaine, The Darkness Into Light Walk, Health and Fitness Weekend , Samba Cuisle Drumming Weekend and The Adventure Races Weekend. and thats only for starters. One certainly cannot say its boring here in the Dingle Peninsula anyway.

News from Camphill Community Dingle Christoph Jensen Lambing, calving, sprouting, flowering ... nature has certainly come alive. And with Easter approaching we participate in this spectacular season. Every morning before work we enact a particular scene of Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday and moving towards Good Friday and then on to the Easter morning. It is our way of becoming aware of the time and season of the year. The garden is bursting with activity. As I am writing the potatoes are planted with all hands on deck and the vegetable seedlings that have been waiting in the trays are transplanted into the beds. Daisy, our older Jersey-cow, gave birth to twin-calves yesterday which means our modest cheese-production will start again. Deirdre, our other cow, has been in milk since February. On Sunday April 2nd a number of us packed into our minibus and a car to drive to Killarney to watch the Kerry-team giving us a good game of football. The outing was enjoyed by all. We are proud to be supporting Ireland’s top-team. Tomorrow we will celebrate Samuel’s, Cornelia’s, Maurus’ and Selma’s farewell. Having served for so many years our little community, they are moving to Kilkenny. We are grateful for all they have contributed and in particular in having left their mark in setting up the new house Tearman an tSolais. As they will be involved in the Camphill communities in the Kilkenny area we will have regular contact with the Kudiabor-family. For the immediate future our life promises to be full of events: Easter, Bealtaine, the Dingle Cycle Race ... and not to forget: the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle Race: 1000 participants have chosen us as their charity to support. Thank you ... We wish all our supporters and friends a Happy Easter festival ... West Kerry Live 43

The Diseart: Looking to the Future

through the vision of Sr. Dorothy and the Msgr, it survived and grew because of Msgr Padraig's enormous personal contribution. Apart from this, his academic achievements attracted Universities to come and base their activities in Dingle. The Diseart is a place that is available as a resource for the community and the involvement of the community in its future plans and activities is central to its continuance and success. The building represents the extent to which residential Christian community developed in West Kerry, from the early Christian settlements as seen at Riasc. Communities have adapted through the centuries, An Díseart also will adapt to the needs of community, providing facilities for courses on well being, health and spirituality, culture and language as well as facilitating people in developing works of beauty and art, in all the artistic disciplines, informed by their own journey. The understanding of Theology and its place in people's lives is an aspiration which we hope to attain.

Beidh aithne ag daoine ar an nDíseart mar Chlochar na Toirbhirte – an áit inar bhunaigh an Moinsíneoir Pádraig Ó Fiannachata Ionad Spioradáltachta agus Cultúir Ghaelaigh. Tháinig an Díseart chun cinn tríd fís an tSiúir Dorothy agus an Mhoinsíneora Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Bhí an Daingean fágtha ag furmhór na mná rialta ach bhí súil ag an tSiúr Dorothy go mbeadh an clochar ar oscailt do phobal Chorca Dhuibhne - go háirithe an séipéal ina bhfuil fuinneoga Harry Clarke. Chuir sí a cuid smaointe faoi bhráid an Mhonsíneora. The Diseart will be known to most people as the old Presentation Convent within which Msgr. Padraig Ó Fiannachta developed a centre where early Christian spiritual and cultural practices could be researched and celebrated. The Díseart was first mooted when most of the Presentation Sisters left the convent in the 90's and Sr. Dorothy saw the value of opening up the convent as a resource for the people of West Kerry and in particular to provide access to the beautiful chapel that houses the Harry Clarke Stained glass windows. She approached Msgr. Pádraig O' Fiannachta and as a result the charity An Diseart was formed and established in the Presentation Convent building. The Msgr. developed a centre for the study of Early Christian and Celtic Culture including theology, language, literature, art, laws, folklore, values, spirituality, history, music, archaeology and customs. To supplement the material available for study he donated his extensive library to Kerry County Council, it is now housed in Dingle Library. His academic prowess gained international recognition. His life and work (A Shaol agus a Shaothar) is the subject of Léacht Cholm Cille which will take place in An Diseart, Dingle the weekend after Easter.

Some of the activities that take place at present are Mass on Monday morning at 10 am celebrated by Fr. Jim Sheehy, a bereavement group that meets once a month, the two community choirs, Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra with Gabor and the Gospel choir with Linda practise there, bíonn Ciorcal Cómhra ar súil gach Aoine ag Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne and a knitting group meets once a week. The publishing house An Sagart operates from An Diseart and the poetry and writing evenings continue during the winter. Various classes are offered by people living in the community in relaxation and self awareness, Art classes have been held, as well as a series of talks on Harry Clarke presented by a member of the community. We plan to have talks on the Laudato Si, Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment. The building is open to the public due to the support of the Scéim Soisialta Tuaithe and FÁS and the hard work of Theresa Rafter Moriarty, Elaine Hilliard, Pat de Brún, Imelda Fay and Páidí Budhlaeir while the beautiful gardens are maintained by the excellent work of Tom Healy and Chris Courtney. Every year students from Sacred Heart University come to study in An Diseart, now after many years in An Diseart, looked after with great care by Sean Pól Ó Conchúir, they have decided to establish their own campus in Dingle. Apart from these, students travel from Kansas City University and Washington Lee to study Theology and Irish Culture. With a view to increasing community involvement and inviting members of the community to take part in An Diseart, the board is establishing Cairde an Disirt/ Friends of An Diseart. If you feel that you have something to share and would benefit from involvement, please contact us. Together, we can contribute to the health, well being, cultural and spiritual life of West Kerry. Fr. Jim Sheehy, jimsheehy@diseart.ie and Joan Maguire, joan@diseart. ie, or leave a message at 066-9152476.

With the passing of the Msgr. in July 2016 the question is raised, where does the Diseart go from here. The Diseart came into existence

Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Another Glorious Day for 6th County Clean Up The sun shone and volunteers came out in their droves for the 6th Annual County Clean-up, which is facilitated by KWD Recycling with the help of Kerry County Council and tidy town committees in Kerry and West Cork. Beginning in 2011 this was the first County Clean up in Ireland with many counties now beginning to mimic due to its success. Attendance was at an all-time record again this year with over 5,000 volunteers signing up all over Kerry alone and 23,000 KWD Red Bags distributed between them. This year the County clean-up was also extended into West Cork by KWD Recycling where it was well received and many attended on the day cleaning many roads which included the main road from Clonakilty to Bantry . KWD staff, family and friends were again on hand this year calling to all the various groups to offer support and also helped pick litter off some roads in West Kerry. A great day was had by all who attended the county wide initiative all across Kerry and West Cork and the benefits are immediately noticeable with a cleaner and greener environment that is visually more welcoming coming into the important tourist season. Many early reports from groups indicate that the amounts of litter on our roads this year was down on other years which hopefully means that people are getting the message and throwing less litter out on our roads which is great. One of the most noticeable contributors to litter along the roads yet again this year was Plastic drinks bottles , drinks cans and Tea/Coffee cups which were constantly strewn all along our roads . There was also the usual crisp and chocolate bar wrappers and plastic bags. Organisers would appeal to everyone in the County to stay conscious of how we dispose of our waste when driving, and ensure that all waste is disposed of at home and not along our roads. We must now turn the focus on keeping all our roads as clean as possible by being more careful and ensuring waste does not end up on the road in the first place for someone else to pick up .

The organisers wish to take this opportunity to thank the over 5,000 volunteer’s right across the county who signed up this year and participated. The mammoth task of collecting all these bags began Monday by KWD Recycling and will take over a week to collect from the different collection points that have been arranged all over Kerry. Well done everyone, lets “keep it clean”

(two), Finbar Casey, and Matt Colborne kicked a beauty. Despite these excellent scores the visitors were still in the game with two frees from Mike Tim O’Sullivan and an injury-time effort from Marcus McNally leaving us two in front at the break: 1-6 to 0-7.

Cromane Notes Jane Casey Cromane GAA Cumann na mBunscoil Mini 7s: Scoil Réalt na Mara NS - the Mid Kerry boys champions - put in a great display at last Monday’s Mini 7s county finals in Caherslee, Tralee. The boys had a great morning, in tough conditions, as they ended up topping their group. They beat the representatives from North Kerry, West Kerry, and Tralee in their group before losing out to Aghatubrid National School, the South Kerry representatives, in the semi-final. Well done to all involved (including their coach Mr Kevin Corkery). The panel included: Charlie Foley, Cian Lyons, Liam O’Neill, Darragh Crosby, Matthew Naughton, Joshua O’Sullivan, Liam Hayes, Conor Hayes, Tony Óg Duffy, Jack McGrath, John O’Connor, Luka O’Sullivan, Billy Counihan, Jamie Casey, and captain Noah Falvey. Under-12s: A great start to the year for our under-12 sides last Friday evening with two mighty wins in their opening county league games, both against Renard. Our ‘Maroons’ side won in a Division 5A thriller. Final score: Cromane 4-17, Renard 5-12. Meanwhile, in the Division 5B game – played at the same time – the Cromane ‘Whites’ side had a comprehensive victory. Final score: Cromane 5-11, Renard 1-6. The ‘Maroons’ made a spectacular second half comeback having trailed by 5-7 to 1-4 after the opening 25 minutes. They came out in the second half transformed and proceeded to kick 3-13 to win by two points in the end. The ‘Whites’ were always in control and led by 5-4 to 1-2. The five-goal rule in under-12 football meant that they could only score points in the second half and they went on to add 0-7 to win by 17 in the end. Well done to both teams, and their mentors (Ger Casey, Mikey Houlihan, Liam Teahan, & Pat Duffy), and to Renard GAA who we wish well for the year ahead. The players involved across the two sides this evening included: Luka O’Sullivan, Jack McGrath, Liam O’Neill, Nathan Key, Tony Óg Duffy, Liam Hayes, Conor Hayes, Sian Corkery, Jamie Casey, Ross Bowell, Ryan O’Connor, Alex Scannell, Cormac Riordan, Darragh Crosby, Matthew Naughton, Joshua O’Sullivan, Saoirse Harkin, John B Horgan, Noel Hannon, Seán Keane, Ben Sugrue, Dylan Counihan, and Mikey Griffin. On Sunday both of our under-12 sides travelled to Spa for the second round of games in the county league. We had no luck on Sunday morning with both sides defeated in Spa. Results: Div 5A: Spa 5-24, Cromane 4-7.

Div 5B: Spa 5-14, Cromane 2-1.

Under-14s: Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 5-4, Kerins O’Rahillys 4-9 Under-16s: Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 4-5, Kerins O’Rahillys 6-3 Seniors: Cromane 1-12, Tuosist 0-14 A glorious win on a glorious day for football. Our seniors made it three wins from four games in Division 5 of the county league with a gritty win against Tuosist this evening in a game played in perfect conditions. It was our visitors from the Beara Peninsula, however, who made the glorious start. They flew out of the blocks and were up 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Our first score of the game came 13 minutes in from a ‘45’ converted by Darren Houlihan. This seemed to settle us but we were helped from the next kick-out as we managed to sneak a fortuitous goal. The stray kick-out was eventually worked back in towards goal and finished to the net by Darren Houlihan, who went on to have a fine game. This gave Cromane a one-point lead after 14 minutes: 1-1 to 0-4.It was a lead that we would never relinquish. Tuosist managed to pull level four times but they could never get their heads in front again. This was a great credit to our lads as they had to dig deep at crucial stages. Some good defending from Liam Casey, Liam Teahan, and Eoghan Walsh (especially towards the end of the second half) laid the foundation. Liam Walsh was excellent again at midfield while Darren Houlihan brought his shooting boots, kicking three fine long-range frees over the course of the hour. In truth all 16 players played their part, and they needed to as Tuosist will be one of the team’s in contention for promotion. Cromane ended the first half on top with fine points from Liam Walsh 50 West Kerry Live

Mikey Houlihan kicked a great score three minutes into the second half to push us out to a three-point lead again. We let our guard down slightly and allowed Tuosist back into it with corner forward Mike Tim O’Sullivan kicking three points in as many minutes to level matters after 37 minutes, 1-7 to 0-10. Tuosist had chances but couldn’t edge ahead and we responded well. Darren Houlihan and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan added two more points from placed balls before another Mike Tim O’Sullivan and a punched effort from Flór O’Sullivan levelled things up again 1-9 to 0-12. Cromane, to their credit, upped the ante again with Liam Walsh beginning to dominate at midfield. Converted frees from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Darren Houlihan and a fine snapshot from substitute Cian O’Keeffe pushed us out to another three-point lead with five left, 1-12 to 0-12. It was all helter-skelter towards the end as Tuosist pushed hard to get something out of the game but they could only muster two points from play courtesy of Flor O’Sullivan and Daragh Sugrue to end up one adrift of their hosts, 1-12 to 0-14. It’s always great to win a close game and this should fill us with confidence as we head into the first round of the junior championship next Sunday when we are away to Lispole (throw-in 2.30pm) Team and scorers: Seán Teahan; Liam Teahan, Eoghan Walsh, Liam Casey; Shane Ahern, Finbar Casey 0-1, Micheál Shaughnessy; Liam Walsh 0-2, Emmet Casey; Matt Colbourne 0-1, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 0-3 (0-2f), Darren Houlihan 1-3 (0-2f, 0-1 ‘45’); Lee Carey, Mikey Houlihan 0-1, Paudie McCarthy. Substitutes: Cian O’Keeffe 0-1 for Lee Carey 43m, Martin Sweeney, Jason Clifford, Eamon O’Connor, and Patrick Moroney. Fixtures: Friday, April 14, Minor County League Div 5: GGC v Waterville/Dromid in Glenbeigh, at 6.30pm Sunday, April 16, County Junior Championship first round: Cromane v Lispole, in Lispole, at 2.30pm. Nellie Fred’s in Dingle will welcome Daithi to the stage this Easter Saturday 15th of April for a very special gig in the venue. Daithi is an electronic music producer obsessed by the culture of Ireland. The two time choice award nominee combines nature recordings, old Irish samples and analog synths to create a unique type of house music that’s soaked in Irish culture. A mainstay in the Irish gigging scene, his live show is an improvised performance, creating on the spot dance music using synths, drum machines and live fiddle. Last year, Daithi found a forgotten recording of his grandmother, where she talked about how she met her husband, and what it was like living in the west of Ireland for the past 90 years. Daithi sampled this recording to create ‘Mary Keanes Introduction’, a track which captured the imagination of millions of Irish people across the world, and became one of the most successful Irish singles that year, staying no.1 in the spotify viral charts for 6 weeks. It proved Daithi’s mantra on music: Every sample should have a back story, and every song should be personal. Doors 10pm. Tickets €10 from www.eventbrite.ie or contact 0669151821

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Taispeántas Ealaíne na Cásca 2017 An Lárionad Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh Domhnach Cásca 16 Aibreán – Dé hAoine 21 Aibreán Buail isteach is fáilte!

Scoláirí ó Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, An Daingean lena múinteoir Jane Ní Mhurchú. Thug na daltaícuairt ar Fhéile Ealaíne na Cásca 2017. (pic Jane Ní Mhurchú) Samantha Ní Mháille - Rock Spray le Andrea Power

breo leis an dath oráiste. Ceapaim go bhfuil rud draíochtúil cruthaithe sa saothar seo agus dhein an t-ealaíontóir jab iontach mar is oileán draíochta é An Fear Marbh agus tá sé seo le feiscint sa phéintéireacht. Caoimhe Ní Shúilleabháin - Peggy Sue le Julie Beckett ‘Sí an t-ealaíontóir Julie Beckett a chruthaigh an pictiúr seo. Peggy Sue an t-ainm atá tugtha aici ar an saothar. ‘Sé an ceathrú prionta amach as deich gcinn é. Gabhar atá sa phictiúr. Dúch dubh ar pháipéar bán atá i gceist. Eitseáil a úsáideadh chun an pictiúr seo a chumadh. Is maith liom an tslí atá an gabhar léirithe aici. Tá Peggy Sue ag féachaint amach agus is féidir na cosa agus na crúba a fheiscint. Tá clúmh catach ar an ngabhar, adharca fada agus cluasa móra agus meigeall. Tá na huigeachtaí difriúla le feiscint i gclúmh an ghabhair agus is féidir an uigeacht mhín a fheiscint sna hadharca leis. D’úsáid an t-ealaíontóir línte agus spotaí beaga chun ton difriúil a thabhairt don ngabhar. Tá an-chuid mionsonraí sa phictiúr seo. Is breá liom stíl an ealaíontóra seo agus tá an-scil aici. Dhein sí cinneadh gan faic a chur sa chúlra agus ceapaim gur cinneadh maith é seo toisc go bhfuil an-chuid mionsonraí ar an ngabhar féin. B’fhéidir go dtógfadh rud éigin sa chúlra aird ón ngabhar. Bhíos meallta ag an saothar seo mar is maith liom ainmhithe. Tá cuma sásta ar an ngabhar agus is dóigh liom gur rógaire de ghabhar í! Is féidir corda agus píosa adhmaid a fheiscint timpeall mhuineál an ghabhair, ar sin b’fhéidir go raibh sí ceangailte agus go bhfuil sí tar éis éalú! Seans gur peata gabhair í, Peggy Sue. Is fiú an saothar seo a fheiscint. Áine Ní Dhubháin - Codladh/Snámh le Pat Owen. Thaitin saothar Pat Owen liom. An Fear Marbh atá léirithe ar adhmad le péint. Tá Pat Owen ag díriú isteach ar an bhFear Marbh trí bhuidéal déanta as gloine. Tá grá mór aige don radharc seo is dóigh liom. D’úsáid sí a scuab i slite difriúla. Tá uigeacht cosúil le spúinse sa chúlra. Taitníonn na dathanna liom. Tá gorm, glas, dubh, dúghorm, bán agus dearg in úsáid aici. Tá a lán uigeachta ar an oileán chomh maith. D’úsáid sí dathanna dorcha chun buidéal a tharrac timpeall an radhairc. Tá cuma tríthoiseach ar an mbuidéal. Is breá liom an saothar seo mar is aoibhinn liom na radharcanna go háitiúil. Is sárshampla é an saothar seo de thimpeallacht Chorca Dhuibhne agus na rudaí deasa atá timpeall na háite. Tá scil den scoth ag an ealaíontóir seo. Neesan Ó Briain- Ó Sé - ‘Admit’ One le Niall Naessens

An Aoine seo caite chuaigh mo rang ealaíne agus mé féin chuig taispeántas d’ealaín áitiúil a bhí ar siúl i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh. Ag siúl isteach chuig an taispeántas bhí cúpla “Ahhhs” agus “Ohhhs” de bharr an tallann a bhí le feiscint. Ag siúl timpeall ag féachaint ar na saothair aoibhne suimiúla a bhí ann, chuireas spéis i saothar amháin go háirithe; ‘Rock Spray’ le Andrea Power. Thit mé i ngrá le ‘Rock Spray’ an nóiméad a leagas mo shúil air. Anois, dún do shúile agus samhlaigh na dathanna seo meascaithe le chéile: dath an labhandair, beagáinín de phudarghorm, agus bán, agus iad ag snámh trí na dathanna san fharraige shuaimhneach. Taobh thiar den bhfarraige shuaimhneach tá carraigeacha láidre fiáine dorcha léirithe le plumchorcra meascaithe le dubh agus liath éadrom. Tá uigeacht cruthaithe leis an bpéint dhubh ar na carraigeacha. Tá fuinneamh ag baint leis na tonnta. Is saothar ealaíne mealltach é a thugann inspioráid dom do mo chuid ealaíne féin. Teya Farrelly - Joe Flannery An Fear Marbh Bhíos an-tógtha leis an saothar le Joe Flannery sa taispeántas thiar sa Lárionad Forbartha Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh. Chuaigh an saothar seo, An Fear Marbh, go mór i bhfeidhm orm. Is tírdhreach é den oileán agus an fharraige déanta le péint aicrileach ar chanbhás. Is breá liom an chodarsnacht idir an cúlra agus an t-oileán. Tá an cúlra teibí le línte tiubha de scáileanna gorma difriúla agus bándearg sa lár. Cuireann sé béim ar An Fear Marbh. Tá an t-oileán déanta le péint oráiste bhríomhar le scáthú níos dorcha. Cruthaíonn sé uigeacht agus cuma tríthoiseach don oileán. Is breá liom mar atá sé déanta mar féachann sé go bhfuil luí na gréine i gceist agus go bhfuil an t-oileán ag 52 West Kerry Live

Niall Naessens a chruthaigh an saothar “Admit One”. Is líníocht ghraifíte agus eitseála é. Tá umar sciodair tréigthe i gcoill agus tá duilleoga agus ticéad le “Admit One” scríofa air tagtha le gaoth. Ceapaim go bhfuil acmhainn ghrinn á léiriú ag an ealaíontóir toisc gurb é ainm an umar sciodair an t-ainm céanna atá ar Amharclann na Mainistreach agus go bhfuil ceangal déanta leis an ticéad “Admit One”. Chum sé an saothar ag úsáid línte graifíte agus íomhánna atá monacrómach. Cruthaíonn na duilleoga dubha sa chúlra doimhneacht sa phictiúr. Bhain Niall Naessens úsáid as an teicníc eitseála chun an saothar a chruthú. Is breá liom an saothar seo toisc go léiríonn an t-ealaíontóir ábhair neamhghnácha sa radharc den tírdhreach. Tá tábhacht tugtha don umar sciodair toisc go bhfuil sé mar chuid den taispeántas ealaíne.

Muireann Ní Ghealbháin - Éirí na Gréine le Ken Bolger Sheas saothar amháin amach an-mhór domsa ag an taispeántas ealaíne i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh: ‘Éirí na Gréine’ le Ken Bolger. Is éard atá léirithe ina chuid oibre aige ná saighdiúirí le sleánna agus bataí ina lámha acu agus grian the agus sléibhte sa chúlra. Tá doimhneacht sa saothar mar go bhfuil an copar dóite agus go bhféachann na sléibhte i bhfad uainn. Nuair a fhéachaim ar an saothar, tagann íomhá isteach i mo cheann de thréimhse fadó in Éirinn agus saighdiúirí ag troid. Cumadh an saothar seo as copar, le híomhá déanta le haigéad nó teas. Tháinig dathanna áille agus nádúrtha amach ar an gcopar. Chomh maith leis sin tá píosa beag de phéint dhubh air chun béim a chur ar imlíne na saighdiúirí. An cinneadh is tábhachtaí a thóg an t-ealaíontóir ná na comhábhair a roghnaigh sé. In ionad péint a úsáid ar pháipéar nó canbhás, bheartaigh sé íomhá a chruthú ar chopar. Tá uigeacht mhín ar an miotal. Tá an comhdhéanamh gnóthach toisc na dton difriúla agus na sraitheanna difriúla den chopar atá dóite. Is saothar mothúchánach dom é. Táim ana-shásta toisc go bhfuil íomhá agam i mo cheann desna saighdiúirí Éireannacha a bhí ag troid ar son na tíre. Is breá liom an saothar seo mar tá sé neamhghnách agus ní fhaca saothar riamh go raibh cuma scátháin ag baint leis. Tá scileanna den scoth ag an ealaíontóir seo agus tá sé ábalta a shamhlaíocht a chur in iúl trí úsáid a bhaint as an gcopar chun íomhá a chur ós ár gcomhair go héifeachtach. Úna Ní Loinsigh - Stephanie Gonzalez: Round Vase Dhein Stephanie Gonzalez an saothar ab fhearr liomsa. Tá an saothar déanta le h-íle ar chanbhás, agus níl fráma air. Pictiúr neamhbheo do vása atá ann. Tá na cruthanna mar bhláthanna teibí agus tá ciorcal mór An Lárionad Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta, dubh ar nós an vása. Na príomhdhathanna atá ann ná líocha oráiste agus Baile an Fheirtéaraigh bándearg ach tá dathanna eile ann freisin. Tá codarsnacht mhór idir an vása dubh agus na bláthanna geala sa chúlra. Chuir sí spotaí ana-bheaga Dé Domhnaigh 16 Aibreán go dtí den phéint timpeall rudaí áirithe ionas go seasódh siad amach. Chuir sí spotaí timpeall ar chuid dos na cruthanna sa chúlra chun a thaispeáint Dé hAoine 21 Aibreán ar oscailt gach lá ó 11.00am gur duilleoga a bhí ann. Is breá liom an saothar seo mar is saothar ildaite Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, 066 9156100, eolas@cfcd.ie teibí é. Is breá liom an uigeacht a thugann na spotaí péinte. Is sárshampla é an saothar seo d’obair theibí. Tá samhlaíocht den scoth ag an ealaíontóir seo.

Taispeántas Ealaíne na Cásca 2017 Easter Art Exhibition

Domhnach Cásca 16 Aibreán 11.00am

Ciara Ní Mhuircheartaigh - ‘Moonlife’ le Maria Magee Ag an taispeántas thaitin an saothar ‘Moonlife’ le Maria Magee go mór liom. Tá an saothar ealaíne déanta le péint acrileach agus cailc. Is pictiúr neamhréalaíoch de shórt é seo de chrann i solas na gealaí. Rinneadh an spéir le péint agus cuireadh cailc thairis. Tá na dathanna atá úsáidte sa phictiúr dorcha, rud a chruthaíonn téama mistéireach agus uaigneach. Taitníonn an pictiúr seo go mór liom. Braithim suaimhneach nuair a fhéachaim air, agus tá an pictiúr ar nós brionglóide, sa tslí a théann buillí na scuaibe timpeall agus timpeall. Níl a lán sonraí sa phictiúr, ach is breá liom é seo mar is féidir leat gach mionsonra den phictiúr a fheiscint, fiú na fréamhacha beaga faoin gcrann. Níl ach spota beag de sholas ann ach seasann sé amach go mór sa tsaothar. Tá an pictiúr seo ar nós rud éigin as scannán scanrúil. Is éacht mór é ón ealaíontóir gur féidir léi dhá mhothúchán a mhalartú as a chéile, eagla agus suaimhneas, agus iad a chruthú in aon saothar ealaíne amháin. Tara Ní Ghairbhí - An Fear Marbh, le Joe Ó Flannúra An saothar a chuaigh i bhfeidhm ormsa ná An Fear Marbh, le Joe Ó Flannúra. Déanta ar chanbhás le péint aicrileach, tá an t-ealaíontóir ag léiriú an oileáin. Tá sé ag léiriú na háilleachta áitiúla agus is breá liom é seo. D’úsáid Joe patrún simplí sa chúlra le trí dhath. Tá dhá shaghas goirme sa bhfarraige agus sa spéir agus dath geal corcra eatarthu chun idirdhealú agus codarsnacht a chruthú. Tá dath oráiste ar an bhFear Marbh agus taitníonn sé sin go mór liom toisc go bhféachann sé neamhréalaíoch. Tá ton agus uigeacht ann áfach, a chuireann cuma níos réalaí air. Seasann an t-oileán amach toisc an dath oráiste agus an uigeacht a chruthaigh Joe leis an bpéint aicrilic. Is pictiúr saghas teibí é, toisc na dathanna. Is saothar álainn ealaíne é. Gabhaimid buíochas le scoláirí Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne agus lena múinteoir Jane Ní Mhurchú as a bheith i bpáirt linn sa léirmheas ar shaothar na Féile Ealaíne. Dún Chaoin: Oscail an Scoil! le

Colm Ó Snodaigh foilsithe ag Coiscéim ‘Tháinig an scéal aniar aduaidh ar mhuintir Dhún Chaoin i samhradh 1970: go raibh a scoil le dúnadh. Bhí sé mar pholasaí ag an Roinn Oideachais le tamall scoileanna beaga tuaithe a dhúnadh, agus is iomaí pobal a chaill a scoil dá bharr. Scoil Ghaeltachta a bhí i nDún Chaoin, agus oidhreacht na mblianta beo sa cheantar fós, ach ba bheag an scéal é sin le maorlathas an stáit. Níor ghlac an pobal leis an gcinneadh, áfach, agus eagraíodh feachtas áitiúil agus náisiúnta ina choinne. Agus cé go raibh daoine móra de lucht polaitíochta, stáit agus eaglaise ina gcoinne, d’oscail muintir Dhún Chaoin an scoil go mídhleathach, ag scaipeadh an scéil, ag eagrú cruinnithe agus mórshiúlta. Ba ghearr go raibh an feachtas ina chuid d’agóidíocht na linne.’- Coiscéim Agus osclaíodh an scoil. Seo cursíos soiléir, spreagúil ar an bhfeachtas fíorthábhachtach seo i stair Chorca Dhuibhne agus i stair an oideachais in Éirinn. Beidh fáilte romhat go dtí an seoladh in Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir i nDún Chaoin Dé Céadaoin Aibreán 19 ar 8.00 tráthnóna.

Under 6/8/10 girls football: It is anticipated that football training will commence on Thursday April 27th - 6.15 to 7.15. Chapter 23 Irish League of Credit Unions County League Div 1 Milltown Castlemaine v St Mary’s Cahirciveen: Milltown Castlemaine had the perfect start with David Roche finishing calmly to the net with almost the first play of the game. Despite this setback St Mary’s, with a strong wind at their back made their way back into the game with the next 5 points. St Mary’s Sean Curnane was extremely accurate from frees. Milltown Castlemaine were struggling for scores but with 5 minutes left in the half, Jerome Flynn jigged into the box and raised a second M/C green flag. The teams traded points with Sean Curnane pointing for St. Mary’s and Gavin Horan pointing for M/C -to leave the short whistle score M/C 2.01, St Mary’s 0.06 A good start is half the battle and M/C struck straight from the throw in with the evergreen Mike Burke punching to the back of the net. The game became very open but M/C’s stout defence and not leaving the South Kerry men in on goal, the game became a point for point game. M/C added some fine scores from David Roche, Derek Twiss, Jonathon O’Sulllivan, Cathal Moriarty, Shane Murphy and a spectacular long distance point from Seamus Dowd. Sean Curnane was equally accurate for St Mary’s -with a fantastic pointed free from outside the 45 into the strong breeze being the highlight. Referee Paul Hayes contributed to a fine game -with an excellent performance and when he whistled for full time, Milltown Castlemaine gained the two points on a score of Milltown Castlemaine 3.07, St Mary’s Cahirciveen 0.11. Minors: The next outing for our minors v Glenbeigh Glencar Cromane is on Wednesday 12th of April at 5pm in Milltown Castlemaine GAA Grounds.

Prescription charges Question I have a medical card but I seem to be paying more than the monthly cap for prescription charges for my family. Why would this happen and how can I get a refund? Answer If you have a medical card, there is a charge for each prescription item you receive. The prescription charge is €2.50, up to a maximum of €25 per month per person or family. For medical card holders over the age of 70 there is a reduced prescription charge, from 1 March 2017, of €2 per item up to a maximum of €20 per month.

You can set up your family a family group 21/08/2014 16:57asPage 1 on medicalcard.ie and print off a family certificate to give to your pharmacist. This will show all of the members of your family so that your pharmacy will not collect charges above the monthly limit. Your family is defined as you, your spouse or partner, any children under 16 years of age and any children between 16 and 21 years of age who are in full-time education.

Project4:Layout 1

If you do not have access to the internet you can ask your Local Health Office to help with setting up a family group. You can also call the HSE on 1890 252 919 or ask your local pharmacist who may be able to help you. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Usually your pharmacy keeps records of how much you have paid in prescription charges and makes sure that you do not pay more than the limit each month. However, you may use different pharmacies in the same month, or your family members may not be set up as a family group, and you may end up paying more than the maximum. If this happens, the Health Service Executive (HSE) will issue a refund without the need for you to apply for it. This is done on the basis of the information received from pharmacies. Refunds are issued every six months for amounts over €10. Amounts that are less than €10 are carried over to the next refund date.
