Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 30th June will be the film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic “Far From The Madding Crowd”. Set in rural Dorset in the 1870’s the film is the story of

independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy, a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance. The following week on Tuesday 7th July the feature will be the intelligent and brilliantly observed “Girlhood”. Telling the story of Marieme who, fed up with her home and school life, starts afresh after meeting a group of three free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her style, drops out of school and starts stealing to be accepted into the gang. This French film has been praised for it’s bracingly fresh approach to the coming-of-age genre and it’s raw energy 4 West Kerry Live

Anyone for a Swim? Public Participation: Identification of Bathing Waters Tens of thousands of people have been enjoying a dip at Kerry’s pristine lakes, rivers and beaches during the recent sunny weather. What most swimmers don’t know is that City and County Councils must designate official bathing areas in their area every year so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use. To help them with this process, Kerry County Council are now asking people who swim at beaches, lakes and rivers to tell them if they think they should maintain existing designated bathing waters designations or give a new official bathing area designation to areas that are commonly used for swimming but not designated at the moment. Under European and Irish law, City and county councils must identify bathing waters each year so that these areas can be monitored to ensure they meet stringent microbiological water quality standards. In some cases the official bathing areas are also the areas where Council’s focus their resources providing lifeguards during the summer season. These laws also require that the Council prepares detailed descriptions or profiles for each of the designated bathing water sites that describe not just the bathing area but also areas in the surface waters catchment area that could be a source of pollution. The profiles include an assessment of the risk of pollution and what action would be taken if pollution happens. If you are a regular swimmer and want to help Kerry County Council decide which bathing areas should be designated for 2016, it might be helpful to consider the following: •

How your swimming area has been used up to now;

How many people use the site;

What facilities exist at the site and how accessible it is;

Any safety issues.

If you wish to propose your favourite beach/river etc as a new bathing water site or comment on an existing site please contact Kerry County Council, Environmental Services 066/7162000 or email environ@kerrycoco.ie

Are you Kerry’s Best Young Entrepreneur? The Kerry County Council Local Enterprise Office has launched a competition to find Kerry’s Best Young Entrepreneur, with a total fund of €50,000 available to invest in winning businesses and entrepreneurs in Kerry. It is part of a €2 million National Competition to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur, where national winners are eligible for further investment of up to €50,000. The competition is open to individuals aged 18-30 and will be judged under three distinct categories:· •

Best new idea – Not yet established (€10,000)·

Best start-up business – Less than 24 months (€20,000)·

Best established business– greater than 24 months (€20,000)

How do you become Kerry’s Best Young Entrepreneur? The first stage will be a county-based competition where up to 15 finalists will be selected, leading to the naming of Kerry’s Best Young Entrepreneur. This stage will include an intensive business boot camp with combined mentoring from experienced business owners. This will be followed by regional finals and ultimately national finals with one business-person being crowned Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur before the end of 2015. The aim of the initiative is to encourage and support a culture of entrepreneurship among young people in Ireland, to promote entrepreneurship as a career choice, and to encourage the establishment and development of new innovative businesses by Ireland’s young entrepreneurs. This is hugely important for job-creation as two thirds of all new jobs are generated by businesses in the first five years of existence – more start-ups and a thriving entrepreneurial culture will lead to more jobs being created. This project is an integral part of the Action Plan for Jobs 2014 and is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through the Local Enterprise Offices. So, how do you enter?Simply go to the website www.ibye.ie and complete the online application form before the deadline on July 31st."I entered the competition last year with nothing more than a rough idea, and the process really helped me define a strategy for the business and the prize fund really helped kick-start my business. I would recommend anyone 18-30 who has a business or even just an idea to enter; it's free and the support is phenomenal" – Niall Harty, owner of The Caveman Food Co. - Winner of 'Best Business Idea' 2014. Payments To Suckler Farmers Under The 2014 Beef Data Programme Processing of payments to over 32,000 suckler cow farmers under the 2014 Beef Data Programme began last week. These payments will begin issuing to suckler farmers participating in this programme next week. This year the payments will proceed in two tranches. The first is an 80% advance payment and the balancing payment will issue when information on autumn born calves has been finalised. The level of funding is similar to 2013. This Programme assists farmers in improving the genetic quality of their livestock, while maintaining a flow of crucial data to Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) that will generate advances in cattle breeding at national level. There has been a 21% increase in the participation level in the Programme this year with 5,700 new suckler farmers being paid this year. There figures are a vote of confidence in the Irish beef industry and its future. The suckler herd is the seed bed for a quality beef industry involving more than 100,000 farm families, employing almost 8,000 people in processing, sales and marketing, and driving exports valued at approximately €2 billion per annum. The Beef Data Programme in conjunction with the Beef Genomics Scheme increases the breeding data available and harnesses technology in a way that improves efficiency and ultimately profitability at farm level Super Levy Installment Scheme The introduction of a new instalment scheme for dairy farmers was also announced, to facilitate staggered payments of the 2015 superlevy bill over the next three years. It is disgraceful that farmers must face a superlevy bill in 2015, considering some countries opted not to continue with quota restrictions from an ewrlier date that we here in Ireland. But at least there are efforts being made to alleviate the cost of these penalties. The introduction of this Scheme will significantly ease the cash flow burden on dairy farmers facing a superlevy bill in 2015. This approach will be of some benefit to those dairy farmers facing a levy in 2015, including those considering expansion. The scheme will ease the cash flow burden on dairy farmers, who would otherwise have to pay the entire bill in 2015. It follows the introduction by the European Commission of legislation to allow for such payments to be spread in three annual instalments, without interest. Milk producers who wish to avail of the scheme will be obliged to pay the first one third of the liability to the Department before 1 October 2015. The two remaining instalments must be paid by the same date in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Milk producers will apply, through their milk purchaser, to participate in this Scheme. Application forms and terms and conditions are being distributed to milk purchasers, who will deduct the payment due from the milk payments to farmers in the peak milk production months of May-September each year. The deadline for farmer applications is 30th June 2015. Refund Of €27M To Farmers Farmers who had payment deductions made to their 2013 Single Payment Scheme under the so called Financial Discipline rule, will now begin to receive a refund from these monies withheld. The Financial Discipline deduction will be reimbursed to 2014 applicants. This re-imbursement amounts to €27 million or 2.74% of the amounts subjected to Financial Discipline deductions from their 2013 SPS payment. In the context of the annual budgetary procedure of the European Union, the financial discipline mechanism which is implemented by the Member States involves a monetary deduction from some direct payments thereby creating a financial Crisis Reserve for the European Union. The crisis reserve is intended to provide additional support for the agricultural sector in the case of major crises affecting agricultural production or distribution. Under the EU Regulations, the first €2,000 payable under the Single Payment Scheme was exempted from the deduction. In the event that the Crisis Reserve is not activated in the financial year, or it is not fully utilised, the balance not used is refunded to farmers in the subsequent financial year. Landmark Day For Organic Farming Sector The Organic Farming Scheme is an agri-environment measure under the Department’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The Scheme is co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). Farmers enter into a contract for a minimum of five years, with standard rate payments of up to €220 per hectare a year during the conversion period and up to €170 per hectare when they have achieved full organic status. Higher payment rates are available for organic horticultural and tillage farmers. By the closing date of Friday 29th May, 870 Organic Farming Scheme applications were received by the Department.. To put this in context, since 16 West Kerry Live

the introduction of the Organic Farming Scheme in 2007, the maximum number of applications received in any year was 380, in 2010. The fact that 504 of these applicants are converting to organics for the first time highlights increased recognition of the potential opportunities that exist for organic producers, both at home and abroad. The 870 applications received account for over 46,000 hectares of land, and over 58% of this area is being brought into organic production for the first time. Farm Safety With up to 300,000 teens at home from post primary school and an additional 500,000 kids expected to get summer holidays in the coming week(s), all farmers are urged to be aware of the increased child traffic on our farms and roads and the corresponding risks. Five children died last year, which was five to many. The numbers of injuries was much greater and with some unreported injuries, we have no idea of the exact figure. Every year this appeal is made to the farming and other sectors, but every year accidents occur, some fatal. So we cant be too vigilant. We must become pro-active and take steps and implement measures to prevent such accidents. There is no point in having a risk assessment or safety statement of the farm, on a shelf, unread. In fact there’s no point in having these things at all, if thay are not used or adhered to. So please be careful. Don’t let small children wander around your farm or yard. Ensure that teenagers using machinery or equipment are trained, (not just shown “how to...”) and remember that animals are as dangerous as machinery, so put up warning signs, and don’t (if possible) keep dangerous animals on site. Chemical sprays and veterinary medicines are also dangerous, and a curiosity to kids, so these must be kept locked safely away. If the sun is not going to come out in 2015, at least lets make it a happy summer. Sheep Notes: Grass Quality:- Where supplies of grass ran tight in May, this had the positive effect of helping to maintain quality for June as there will be less dead material at the base. However, grass going to seed and a build up of stem can still be a problem. This will be an even greater problem where utilisation was poor in May and large amounts of grass were left in the fields after grazing. Where surpluses are being removed as silage, the resulting after grass will be top quality. However, in other cases it may be necessary to top some fields to remove this stemmy, and in some cases dead material. Wet conditions caused excessive covers to be left in the field. This will lead to a lot of dead material and poor performance. In June, grazing down to 6cm will help to maintain target lamb growth rate. In the case of set stocking pasture height should be maintained at about 7cm. This will ensure animals are not forced to eat the stem contained below this level. If grass is getting too far ahead and grazing heights are increasing, you should use this as an opportunity to take out some areas and make some silage. Walk the whole farm regularly to assess the situation. When you have enough grass on your grazing area to last in excess of 14 or 15 days you should consider removing some grass in the form of silage. The resulting silage should be of good quality as it will be made from fresh leafy grass and the resulting after grass will be ideal for thriving lambs. Annual Review And Outlook For Agriculture, Food And The Marine The publication of this Annual Review and Outlook for Agriculture Food & the Marine, 2014/2015 shows the important role that the Irish agri-food sector has played in aiding economic recovery. Figures for 2014 show that the sector accounted for around 8.4% of total employment and made a particularly significant contribution to employment in rural areas. CSO Estimates for aggregate farm income increased by 5.6% to €2.4 billion in 2014 and although it was a difficult year for Primary production, CSO data still shows an increase of over 30% in the output value of the agriculture sector since 2010. The significant role that agri-food and beverage exports play is highlighted as they continued their remarkable growth in 2014. Exports for the sector rose by 4% to a record €10.5 billion 2014 and this now means that the value of food & beverage exports have increased by 45% since 2009. This shows the global demand for quality Irish product and highlights the excellent work of all key stakeholders within the sector. However, while the outlook for the sector is optimistic, there are challenges ahead. Ireland is a small open economy and volatility in world commodity prices can have serious adverse consequences in terms of lower prices for our produce or higher prices for our inputs. It is vital that all stakeholders within the agriculture sector work together to minimise the impact of these events. For further information contact:- Louis Murchan 087-2857938

066-9150663 The Geological Heritage of West Kerry Pedler's Lake: first evidence of the Ice Age in Ireland

Patrick Wyse Jackson In 1837 the Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz visited Scotland and declared for the first time that ice formerly covered much of Northern Europe even though there was none to be seen during his visit. The scientific world and general public were astounded! Agassiz was talking from experience - he had studied modern Alpine glaciers in his homeland and had seen what ice could do to the landscape. The first evidence in Ireland for the Ice Age was discovered in 1848 at Pedler’s Lake by John Ball (1818-89) a Dublin-born civil servant and Alpine mountaineer.

plucking away at the underlying sandstones, and deepened armchairshaped depressions called corries (or 'cwm' in Wales and 'cirques' in France) were produced. These are often filled with lakes or tarns. One such example is Pedler’s Lake and it is a popular stop for visitors travelling to Dingle. The short climb from the road to the lake provides a beautiful view - try to imagine the scene filled with ice. Not so long ago this corrie was packed with ice several hundred metres thick. At the front edge of the lake distinct striations were made in the underlying purple-coloured Old Red Sandstone by stones plucked up in the ice. From here a glacier moved down the mountain and northwards through the Owenmore Valley. Striations in Old Red Sandstone.

Scientists now know that approximately 2 million years ago the Earth’s climate began to cool and ice caps formed at the poles. Thick ice sheets advanced southwards and covered northern Europe. This time period is called the Pleistocene and can be subdivided into seven alternating periods of warm and cold. In Ireland two cold glacial periods can be recognised: the Munsterian (200,000 to 132,000 years ago) and the more recent Midlandian (120,000 to 10,000 years ago). In the former ice caps and valley glaciers covered Kerry, where local ice met thick ice sheets moving from the north, while in the latter period, the Dingle Peninsula was not covered by ice sheets but small local glaciers cascaded from high ground. Today the evidence of this Pleistocene ice age can be seen as corries on mountain sides, sharp ridges called arêtes, striations on rock surfaces, deepened U-shaped river valleys, glacial spillways, and in glacial till and erratics deposited when the ice finally melted. Some of these features will be examined in the next two articles. On the Dingle Peninsula as the temperatures dropped snow collected mainly on the north-east sides of mountains where it was less likely to melt. Quickly it became compressed into ice, and as this became heavier it began to move downslope under gravity. This had the effect of

A Midsummer’s Tonic for the Heart and Mind! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

carries out repairs and ensures the smooth communication between nerve cells and neurotransmitters limiting risk of mood disorders such as depression. In heart health, omega 3 reduces stickiness in the blood, reduces bad cholesterol, ensures protection and maintenance of cell membranes and has an anti-inflammatory effect reducing risk of strokes, atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes and other inflammatory illnesses.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the unique energy patterns of each season nourishes different organs systems within the human body. Summer energy feeds the heart, vascular system and the small intestine. Simply put, seasonal food and activities of Summer are most nourishing to these organs and likewise, the organs are more receptive to a seasonal tuning during the Summer season. While the relevance of TCM is constantly under scrutiny in the West, we share many of their principles and they too are rooted in our own traditions going back thousands of years. Since pre-Christian times, the Summer Solstice has been celebrated with bonfires and rituals to honour the Sun (Fire energy) which rises to its highest point in the sky. Many Christian religions adapted theses celebrations, most evident in the lighting of bonfires on the eve of the feast day of St. John the Baptist (June 23rd ). No matter the origin or our own personal beliefs tuning into the Summer season through food and tradition provides a substantial tonic to both the heart and mind.

Connect to Summer through colourful, seasonal food bursting with life and vitality. Add some fire energy with paprika, cayenne, chilli and peppers – fiery spices are known to increase blood flow and reduce pressure. Shared in good company, a creative Summer menu provides the resilience required to face all of life’s ups and downs. Enjoy it now and bottle some for later!

Depression is the most widely diagnosed mental disorder in Ireland and one out of every four prescriptions written are for anti-depressants. Interestingly, cardiovascular disease affects one out of every two Irish adults and is the number one cause of premature death in this country. Almost a cliché but the heart and mind are connected not only on an emotional level but also from a biological and physical stance. To focus on one with disregard to the other is a fundamental fault of modern Western medicine and does little to address the frightening statistics for both depression and heart disease.

Such is the close connection between heart and mind that the foods which are beneficial to one are also beneficial to the other. Right now, Nature’s energy mirrors that of the Sun, at its highest and most far-reaching. The foods which are now in season also mirror this energy in providing sustenance to the expansive network of blood vessels and cells and to nerve cells (neurons) which transmit and receive signals to and from the brain. Summer foods are a colourful, juicy, fresh array of fruits and vegetables. Eaten raw or with minimal cooking, these foods provide a rich supply of antioxidants and vitamin C which help to support and protect our vascular and nerve networks. Antioxidants are most abundant in dark skinned berries, red fruits and vegetables as well as minerals such as selenium and zinc. A heart-friendly diet of fresh fruits and vegetables reduces the risks associated with hardening of the arteries which is implicated in both cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. A rich blood supply to the brain supplies nutrients and oxygen to the hungriest organ of the body, maintaining good function and slowing down the aging process. Nerve cells, unlike other cells only divide during foetal development and during the first few months of life. They are meant to last a lifetime. Considering they are involved in every thought, action and feeling, their protection from damage and upkeep by antioxidants is fundamental to long-lasting mental well-being. Summer time is Vitamin D time, it is now that we stock up on vitamin D which should last through the Autumn, Winter and Spring. Low levels of vitamin D is a factor in both depression and heart disease and research into neurological illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease have also links in Vitamin D deficiency. UV light from the sun during the Summer months is absorbed through the skin and converted to vitamin D3. Traditionally we would spend more time outdoors during the Summer months, but nowadays with work and lifestyle routines fixed indoors, it is no wonder we are lacking in this vital nutrient. At Summer’s end, have your levels tested and supplement if necessary to bring levels to their optimum range. Wild caught oily fish are also a good source of vitamin D as are eggs but no source is better than the sun. Oily fish are also the best source of omega 3, a polyunsaturated fat needed for brain and heart function. The brain is 60% fat which must come from the fat we eat. A diet rich in omega 3 maintains the brain, 22 West Kerry Live

Love Drives Out Fear -Pastor Shaun Abrahams MA.Th

Sunday Service at 10:30 am - Wednesday Bible Study 7:30pm Chapel on the Hill, Market Street, Killorglin Tel: 085 1541673/085 1101113 E: info@killorglinbaptistchurch.com

1 John 4:18 ‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.’ We simply cannot escape the reality of fear. Perhaps you are anxious about your financial status, your children, health or your own sense of happiness. Some fear is good. For one, we know that the scriptures teach that a healthy fear of God is essential for true wisdom and knowledge. We know that a right reverence of God will protect the Christian from a multitude of evils. (Proverbs 1:7). Secondly fear is also the alarm bell that God has given us to recognise danger so we can protect ourselves in a wicked and sinful world. King David often fled for his life when danger was imminent. Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt to protect the Lord Jesus. Thirdly, fear can cause a response that renders us defenceless and feeling hopeless. Often I talk to Christians who have serious panic attacks and fears or phobias of some sort or the other. Some struggle with a fear of failure, others with inadequacy or insecurity. As a husband and father with a spouse who has gone through cancer on three separate occasions, I have learnt as a Christian to respond to fear with trust and faith in a loving God. I have also learnt that reacting with sacrificial love by outwardly focussing on caring for the needs of others is the ‘way out’ of my hopeless response to fear. The apostle John makes a profound statement when he writes ‘love drives out fear’. The love John means here is sacrificial, selfless and focused on the needs of others. This kind of love is the distinctive feature of biblical Christianity. God is love and the ultimate demonstration of His love is demonstrated in the sacrificial death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Christians are simply those who personally trust in that sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ. The love of Christ becomes both the example and the motivation of the type of love Christians are to demonstrate in fearful situations. Learning to love others ‘drives out’ the fear of whatever personal loss and danger we are anticipating. Fear that renders us permanently inoperative as Christians and stifles our ability to worship God is not a healthy fear. When fear threatens to shut us down we naturally go into a self- preservation mode. It is then that we must respond and consider the question ‘Am I trusting God’. The prophet Isaiah writes ‘Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of The Lord and rely on his God’. Resting in the love of Christ will set the Christian free from a crippling fear. Trusting in an Almighty God in the midst of a fearful situation is the ‘doorway’ to experiencing grace and strength from a Loving Father. Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Killorglin Tidy Towns. Orna Eccles Killorglin Tidy Towns would like to be able to tell everyone that T he National TTjudges were here and gone, but really that's impossible to say but they will most likely have visited by the end of the month, (we never get a calling card! ) and we would urge you to keep an eye on litter in the town and pick up anything that might have arrived via the summer winds!! As you know, it is important to keep the town looking well at all times of the year but particularly during the summer month's, when we have so many welcome visitors. So we are asking everyone to please be vigilant as to your surroundings at all times, make sure during your travels around town you are observant to the cleanliness of all areas. The summer days are drifting along, although the sun hasn't put in much of an appearance, to date! Killorglin Tidy Towns have been very busy, planting flowers, litter picking, weeding and cleaning - there is always lots to do and we appreciate any hour or two that you can volunteer! What is Tidy Towns The national Tidy Towns initiative was launched by Bord Fáilte, the Irish Tourist Board (now Fáilte Ireland), in 1958 as part of the 'Tostal', a nationwide festival celebrating all things Irish. A step-up from the original National Spring Clean Campaign which ran between 1953 and

Kebabs, Burgers, & More

1957, Tidy Towns rapidly developed its own identity and has gone on to become Ireland's most well known and popular local environmental initiative. Right from the start, the primary focus of Tidy Towns was to encourage communities to improve their local environment and make their area a better place to live, work and visit. The competition aspect was an important element in developing friendly rivalry that would help boost standards across the board. and the winner of the first competition held in 1958 was Glenties, Co Donegal. However, the emphasis was always on participating rather than winning as the very act of taking part brought benefits to the community. And with a focus on long-term results rather than quick returns, Tidy Towns was soon seen as a unique and far-sighted initiative. The TidyTowns movement in Killorglin Killorglin Tidy Towns has sought to embrace the holistic ethos of the modern Tidy Towns competition. KTT focuses on improving the appearance of Killorglin through works that are sustainable, in keeping with the architectural environment and complementary to the town's local heritage. You areallwelcome to attend a Killorglin Tidy Towns public meeting on Tuesday 30th June at 8pm in O'Grady's pub. Dingle Restaurants: the Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

A personal view by John Doyle Food is an important part of the culture of any nation. Our attitude to food in Ireland is quite interesting – people sometimes talk about ‘going for a feed’. Surely horses feed but people eat or dine. In my opinion the family meal at home, or in restaurants, is an important part of the day. Besides the need to eat it becomes a social, relaxed and pleasant family experience where we talk about our problems, our hopes and experiences. This also applies when dining with friends or colleagues in their homes or restaurants. To me there is some importance in that Jesus choose a meal with friends to say his ‘goodbyes’ and give the world the living memory of him. Our own restaurant started because after the release of ‘Ryan’s Daughter’ there was a large increase in the number of tourists arriving in Dingle. I can remember being on the pier and being asked time and time again about all the wonderful fish being landed and where it could be eaten in Dingle. Stella and I talked long and hard about our idea of a seafood restaurant. Eventually we decided to look for a kindly bank manager and a premises. The rest, I suppose, everybody knows. Our business flourished because the raw materials we have in Dingle are the finest in Europe. Stella is one of the best cooks. Over the years we have been helped by some very fine staff and also the people of Dingle have been very supportive of us and our efforts. The restaurants, coffee shops, food bars and delicatessen outlets must now be around 20 to 25 in Dingle. They have become major employers in the area and every year we hear of more people opening up new operations. Generally, this is a good trend as business makes business – the more activity in an area the greater the attraction for both local people and visitors. But… and there is always a ‘but’ or two: “But” number 1: How many restaurants of the same style can we support? I don’t know – but at some stage there must be a ‘shake out’. “But” number 2: Are too many of our restaurants trying to be international rather than local in character? After all, the best hamburger is in America not Ireland. Where have all our native dishes gone? Irish stews, Drisheen, good country soups and where, oh where, is the Dingle Pie and the famous Kerry Lamb? Food does not have to be expensive to be good but I would prefer to have 3 ounces of fresh salmon to 12 ounces of frozen any day. “But” number 3: People come to Dingle because it is unique with all the old shop fronts and the different colour and shapes of the houses. It is important not to change the character of the town. We must keep the integrity of our town. Neon belongs in Manhattan – your own name belongs above your own door in Dingle. Finally, we have our great renewable resources in the Dingle area, the people, the land, the sea and the magnificent scenery. It is from these things we must live – we must preserve each of these jewels or the future of our area is all down hill. It is expected that by the year 2000 – 15 years from now – tourism will be the largest business in the world. Don’t ruin it now that we have such a good future.

Dingle Peninsula Open Gardens Day Sunday 28th June

Bórd na n-Óg na Gaeltachta

Now in its sixth year, the Dingle Peninsula Open Gardens Day has established itself as a regular on the Kerry festival and events calendar. It always takes place on the last Sunday of June and this year gardens will be open on Sunday 28th June. At least eight lovely private gardens located between Castlemaine and Annascaul will open their gates to the public at 12.45 and close at 6.30pm. Tickets can only be purchased on the Sunday, from 12.30 onwards at the Trading Post marquee in Boolteens located next to Keel Church. A charge of €10 per adult to view all gardens includes refreshments, home-made cake, a route map and a short description of all the gardens. Last year it attracted many visitors from outside the county, including from Clare and Cork. Most of the gardens have a beautiful backdrop of sea or mountain views that stretch along Castlemaine Harbour to Inch. Event organiser Martin Greenwood said ’the idea behind it is simple, to encourage people to garden by visiting gardens and seeing what can be achieved in other peoples gardens, whether its pots, garden designs, colour schemes, plant types, ponds or outdoor dining spaces’. The proceeds from the event go towards the Maine Valley Family Centre, a local charity that supports a range of family and community programmes in the Maine Valley area. Last year the event raised €1,300 to support various projects run by the Centre. Children are welcome and go free but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Facebook @ ‘DinglePeninsulaOpenGardens’ or contact Martin on 086 2288313.

Donegal: Still A Serious Threat Tadhg Evans With just a few minutes of a largely forgettable All-Ireland final remaining, Kerry’s supporters, already teeming with anxiety, almost collapsed in unison as their team shovelled a few more pounds of tension upon them. In 2011, The Kingdom elected to use listless, lateral handpassing in a bid to make those final few units of time ebb away without incident. Within minutes, the celebration of the county’s 37th All-Ireland title had been postponed until a later date. On that occasion, Dublin seemed to recognise that they needed to score a few times. They also deduced that they required possession of the ball to do so. Three years on from that moment of clarity on Dublin’s part, Donegal were faced with the same puzzle. The same listless handpassing unfolded before them. The same answers should have hammered through their door with a pickaxe, but never did. They sat back. They left possession with the Kingdom. They lost. When Andy Dufresne finally made it through the sewer pipes leading away from the Shawshank Prison, he was greeted by the most melodramatic deluge of rain ever commissioned to the big screen. Eighteen years on from the cinematic experience that was Shawshank, Jim McGuinness led Donegal through a very different sewer to claim their second All-Ireland title. There was no rain awaiting McGuinness as he redeemed Donegal. Instead, there was praise. Lots of it. Joe Brolly described the McGuinness system as ‘unbeatable’, ‘a superbug with no obvious cure’ and ‘ground zero for football’. As it turned out, Brolly was wrong. McGuinness was a fine manager of a fine football team. But as enlightened as his system was, it was a distance from the ‘unbeatable’ status attributed to it. In July of 2013, our very core beliefs were defrocked as Monaghan had the audacity to beat Donegal in the Ulster final. Not a mathematician or scientist was spotted within the Monaghan camp in the lead-up to their triumph. They simply aped the Donegal system, and won. The head of modern day Gaelic Football is rammed so far up its own rear passage that it is incapable of identifying a lack of common sense in the systems devised by its managerial ‘geniuses’. Only Michael Murphy seemed to recognise the peril facing Donegal in those final few moments of the 2014 final, as he lunged towards goal and very nearly snatched a draw. The three or four minutes prior to that had showcased an obvious flaw in Donegal’s plan. Their stringent abidance to the plans of McGuinness prohibited them from contemplating what might roam outside the proverbial cardboard box. Donegal had their system aped again in the 2014, and they collapsed many miles out from the line that would have provided answers. Some will have you believe that only an outrageous mistake from Paul 28 West Kerry Live

Durcan separated the sides. Anybody who did not recognise the Kingdom’s superiority in the 2014 final is probably guilty of the misdeed that has kept Kerry in business for over a century: failing to give them even a semblance of credit. Kerry’s shooting was uncharacteristically appalling in the final, and they could have accounted for Donegal long before the game’s conclusion. The better team on the day won the match, without question. If I seem harsh on Donegal, it’s not borne out of any kind of dislike, but more of a frustration at how they’ve chosen to use the talent at their behest. Donegal are a fabulous outfit. Such is the overzealous belief within GAA circles in the abilities of our managers, we have pushed notion of crediting the game’s players to the wayside. Donegal possess some ridiculously good footballers. Prior to their recent game against Armagh, there was a genuine sense that Donegal were a team on the wane. Such a belief was consigned to the realm of the laughable within two minutes of their mismatch. Rory Gallagher devised a game plan that presented his Donegal team as a talented, exciting and potent outfit. Rather than being sytem-orientated, the plan accentuated the individual abilities of Donegal’s outstanding contributors.

Their stringent abidance to the plans of McGuinness prohibited them from contemplating what might roam outside the proverbial cardboard box. The opening goal illustrated quite vividly lessons that have been learned by Gallagher. Not too arrogant to snub a tactic as supposedly crude - but often effective - as the long kick to a target man at the edge of the square, Gallagher’s plan seduced the entranced Armagh gatekeepers away from the full back line, leaving the excellent Paddy McBrearty with James Morgan as his only issue once possession had been attained from an excellent Neil Gallagher delivery. It was uncannily similar to the opening goal for Kerry’s Paul Geaney in the All-Ireland final last September.

their opponents. Donegal’s movements were effectively carried out by groups of three, with the man in possession always flanked by at least two options of assistance. Armagh’s support play was awkward and hurried, their kick passing woeful on the rare occasion that it was implemented. Conversely, Donegal were aided profitably by the long kickpassing provided by the triumvirate of MacNiallais, Gallagher and the inimitable Michael Murphy. The tactic had been largely ignored by McGuinness throughout his extraordinary reign, and watching the aforementioned trio yesterday has to leave contemplating why that was. McGeeney’s appointment as Armagh’s manager has been greeted with a suspicious lack of suspicion. ‘Geezer’ was as influential a footballer as we have seen in the last twenty years, but while his time at the chessboard for Kildare produced a team to rival any other in terms of fitness, it failed to produce a unit fluent in the core skills of the game. Armagh have some fine footballers, but if they had all taken to the field wearing Kildare jerseys against Donegal you’d have taken no notice. They couldn’t kick from distance, they couldn’t take scores, and they had no obvious plan when mounting an attack. The game of football has moved away from the notion that the game is a relatively simple one. When I watched last year’s final, I hoped that teams might read it for what it was: a showcase in all this is weak about the defensive, system orientated game, as opposed to its strengths. Against, Gallagher impressed in allowing his players to impress. Hearteningly for football, we might finally see how good his Donegal’s players really are this summer.

On that day, Donegal opted not to utilise Contact: Eamonn Dowd - 087-6720848 facebook/dowdyman the counter attacking game that has been eamonndowd@hotmail.com the centrepiece of all their most illuminating performances, namely against Cork and Dublin in the AllDabhach Sheipteach - An bhfuil sé le glanadh?? Ireland semi-finals of Cuir Glaoch / call Diarmuid Ó Beaglaoi 2012 and 2014. Against Baile an Mhúraigh Armagh, their half back line was notably tuned towards a dual function that makes Donegal so difficult to resist. Their hand passing was as crisp and measured as it had ever been under McGuinness, unlike the inept exhibition of the 087 2969846 nó 066 9155446 core skill provided by Permit Number On Request - Uimhir Cheadúnais ach é a lorg

Overnight, it burst into a mass of rich yellow flowers and has cheered me up immensely. It contrasts brilliantly with the purple flowers of comfrey - this was a most exciting accidental liaison

The kitchen garden has again been a tedious affair - the alternation between extreme wet and extreme dry is definitely not good for vegetable growing. Cool night temperatures have also interrupted growth: even the lettuce seems to be standing still. I planted my all time favourite early potato ‘Home Guard’ in old compost bags in the polytunnel

and kept piling any old compost in on top to encourage extra tuber growth. It has been an easy method which has proved surprisingly productive. I am enjoying a generous harvest of delicious good-sized spuds with no blight problems for once and very little scrubbing required. Of course the traditional butter and salt is a must but I also enjoy them with a blob of natural yogurt enhanced to perfection with freshly chopped Moroccan mint or spearmint. Coriander has almost come to an end - it always thrives better in the earlier part of the season. Any sowings that I make now seem to quickly run to seed. I will collect and sow some of this ripened seed in August with the hope that it may provide a late autumn or early spring harvest. My Greek oregano is so lush I end up using it in everything and anything: since my delicious dill died it has become my substitute flavour in egg dishes! I have green and bronze fennel growing everywhere: it makes a superb ornamental foliage plant. Unfortunately I am not too fond of the flavour; anything aniseedy reminds me of liquorice and how I deplored it as a child. I found those long black liquorice shoelaces doubly disgusting: I could never understand how anyone would enjoy chewing on that rubbery substance! I do have a plant of liqourice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) in the tunnel: it is related to the pea and bean family but has never flowered. It is the root which provides the

Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Cathracha i gCorca Dhuibhne – Cashels / Stone Forts on The Dingle Peninsula Isabel Bennett Ba insna liosanna a mhaireadh na feirmeoirí móra agus a dteaghlaigh sna Luath-Mheánaoiseanna. Tugann seandálaithe liosanna nó ráthanna ar na cinn le claí cré, agus cathracha (nó caiseal) ar na cinn le claí cloch. Saol tuaithe bunaithe ar an dtreabh a bhí ann le linn na tréimhse seo. Feirmeoireacht agus tógaint stoic ba bhonn leis an eacnamaíocht. Bhíodh tithe laistigh de na ballaí cosanta, clocháin chloch de ghnáth i gCorca Dhuibhne, cé go mbaintí úsáid as ábhar eile chomh maith. Buaileann foirgintí eile linn uaireanta, botháin is dócha. Bíonn uaimh le fáil iontu uaireanta. Tugann an tochailt a deineadh ag Cathair na bhFionnúrach léargas maith dhúinn ar chaiseal agus ana-stádas aige. Bhí ardáin chéimneacha laistigh den gclaí ar an láthair seo, rud a chabhródh le cosaint na háite dá mba ghá. Tá seoimrín sa bhfalla (agus bhí an tarna ceann ann atá scriosta anois), a sholáthraíodh stóras nó dídean, nó fiú príosún! Bhí dhá chlochán cloch ar an láthair, agus uaimh ag imeacht amach ón gceann beag. Bhí cosán cloch ó bhéal an chaisil go doras an chlocháin mhóir. Fuaireadh áras chun miotal leaighte a dhoirteadh amach agus fuílleach iarainn ó fhoirnéis chomh maith ann; léiríonn na hiarsmaí sin go raibh earraí miotail á ndéanamh ar an láthair.

is an interesting entrance feature, and the stone path from the entrance to the door of the house is well preserved. A large pit outside the house was used for disposing rubbish, and contained organic remains including apple, blackberry, hazelnut and grape seeds. Other finds from the site included stone tools, some pottery, iron knives, a blue glass bead fragment and crucible fragments came from an iron-smelting furnace found in the larger room. These are only two examples of a type of monument to be found throughout the peninsula. For further information visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle) www. westkerrymuseum.com. The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. One of the most common monument types in Ireland is the ringfort or rath; these were in use from perhaps the 6th up to the 10th or 11th centuries AD, and were the enclosures within which the ‘comfortable’ farmers lived. Here on the Dingle Peninsula, many monuments of this type can be seen, but often, instead of the enclosure being constructed of earth, we have monuments built purely from stone. These are referred to by archaeologists as ‘stone forts’, ‘cashels’ or ‘cahers’, the latter two words coming of course from the Irish. Two good examples of these sites, both National Monuments, are easily accessed. One is at Cathair Deargáin Thuaidh, situated on the right hand (west) side of the road c. 600m beyond the church and graveyard at Cill Mhaoilchéadair, as you head south towards Dingle, and is accessed via a swing gate. The site is not signposted, but the road widens slightly allowing a limited space to park. Within are 5 clocháin or circular rooms, built in dry stone, using the corbelling technique. The external surviving height of the enclosure wall is most impressive at the north-west side, where it survives to 2.65m, and the width of the wall here is 2.1m. The original entrance is no longer apparent, and one enters today over a style. A souterrain (underground passage) was entered via one of the rooms, although today it is blocked. These passages would have been used for storage and perhaps to conceal goods or even people, if necessary.

The interior of Cathair na bhFionnúrach Cathair na bhFionnúrach, in the townland of Baile na bhFionnúrach on the western slopes of Mount Brandon, is c. 10km (6 miles) north of Dingle. The site, excavated in the late 1990s (facilitated by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne), contains two clocháin. A souterrain (now closed) was entered from the smaller room, which also contained a hearth. The larger room had a paved drain, two fireplaces, some pits and several postholes left by fixtures and fittings. The surrounding wall contains one surviving wall chamber (of two, originally), and has stepped terracing, which would have aided in defending the site, if necessary. There

Camp Juniors FC - Awards Day Padraic O Connell With the Soccer balls replaced with Gaelic balls, CAMP JUNIORS FC will draw their season to a close next weekend with their Annual AWARDS AFTERNOON on Sunday June 28th at the Sportsfield in Camp, 2~5pm. With a Beach Walk, Barbecue, Mini-Tournament final, Bouncy Castles, and a host of awards to give out Sunday promises to be a great family day. A very successful season saw the club with a record no. of 8 underage teams playing in the Schoolboys / Girls League, winning two titles, missing out in 2 Cup Finals, hosting three Cup Finals and three of our teams playing at the highest level in the Premier Divisions. The huge development of facilities by Camp Community Council has benefited the club enormously and With a strong committee and great volunteer involvement drawn from right across the peninsula (Blennerville to West of Dingle), CAMP JUNIORS FC, in their 20th year, can look forward to many more exciting days. Fantastic also to see a record number of our players lining out in County colours at U12, U14 and U15 levels. Annascaul Singing Club “Best night yet”, seemed to be the general opinion around the village, following the June gathering of the Annascaul Singing Club. And it was indeed a mighty occassion. There were ballads, blues and songwriters galore. For instance, a budding Damien Rice gave a rendering of his own compositions, cheered on by a packed house. But there were also folk songs, country songs and come-all-ye’s delivered with great enthusuasm and feeling. So whatever yer taste in singing and music you'll enjoy the next session at Patcheen's Bar, Annascaul on Thursday 16th July at 9pm. If you have a song, recitation or a tune, or even of you just like to listen, come in and take your ease. It's free and it's the best of fun

When we arrived we were in awe of how different Balleyferriter was from Washington, D.C, and as we wandered through the village we became more and more mystified by the village’s beauty. The night went on and we began to grow nervous for the upcoming week. All of us had come to learn the Irish language (Gaeilge). Little did we know, over the course of the next week we would be submerged into a rich culture with a beautiful language that we would find irresistible. During the day we were taught the basics of the language. We began with “Dia Duit” and as our knowledge of the language increased we eventually were able to have complete simple conversations completely in Irish. By the end of the week we were able have our tae le bainne agus siúcra and had developed a small vocabulary. This was supplemented with interactive activities in the evenings where we spent time growing closer over enjoyable activities including set dancing and a table quiz. However, what made us fall in love with the beautiful Baile an Fheirtéaraigh was a beautiful language attached to a rich culture. We were immersed in a town that rejoiced in their rich history and unique heritage and wanted to share their stories with us. Somewhere between the landscape, the visit to the Blasket Island, and the experiences we had in the classroom, we fell in love with the town and the language. We entered the town as nervous city goers and left as students with a love for Gaeilge and the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Summer Stew of Lamb, Chorizo and Beans Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School This is recipe is such a good excuse to have a stew even at this time of the year. It is warming but still is perfect for a summers evening and it is ideal to be served as an evening meal especially with some salads and some crusty bread. Make sure you get your lamb form your local butcher (if you are a visitor to here it is worth trying lamb form the peninsula and when you taste it you will agree it is some of the most finest lamb you will taste). In this recipe I have included dry white beans, cooking them this way it will give you a creamy taste to the stew. Just make sure to soak them over night. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: 700g lamb dice, 220g chorizo, cut into chunks 1 large onion, sliced thinly 3-5 garlic cloves, sliced thinly 150ml red wine (use a full bodied if possible) 600ml stock Dash of sherry vinegar 200g White Beans (Cannellini) soaked overnight and drained Tin of chopped tomatoes Thyme leaves Handful of chopped herbs such as parsley or tarragon Paprika Salt and pepper Olive Oil METHOD Place a pan on over medium heat, add some oil and then add the chorizo, cook this for about 5 minutes. Add the onions and garlic. Meanwhile brown the meat in another pan. Add the lamb to the pot with the chorizo. Increase the heat and add the wine and vinegar and then add the stock. Give it a minute or so before adding the tomatoes, herbs and paprika. You can now add the beans. Bring the mixture the to a slow simmer. Cook this for about 2 hours very slowly, check the beans to make sure the have cooked. At this stage the lamb should be cooked too. Season well and add some chopped herbs and serve. Enjoy!!!

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid Tá lá na cinniúna chughainn ar cosa-anairde nuair a bhuailfidh Ciarraí le Corcaigh i bPáirc an Gheararaltaigh i gcraobh sinsir caide na Mumhan. Gan amhras ní gá gur deire é má chaileann Ciarraí mar beidh seans acu tríd ann ndoras iata- buadh cheanna ortha sa Mhumhain ach ina dhiaidh sin bhuadar Craobh na hÉireann. Meátar gur fearr an bhua mar go mbíonn leacacha an dorais iata, sleamhain ainneóin go bhfuil sé ráite go mbeidh furmhor mhór do phainéal Chiarraí slán don gcluiche. Tá daoine ag áitheamh ar a chéile fé cé a bheidh ar an bhfoireann ag dul amach ar an bpáirc Domhnach na cinniúna. Seo mar a chuir na saineolaithe é- is beag a bhí ar aon fhocal ach seo an cúigear déag a bhí sa cheann ag an dtromlach, Kelly, Ó Sé, O’Mahony, Enright, Lyne, Murphy, Young, Maher & Moran, Cooper, Sheehan, Buckley, Donoghue, Donoghy, Geaney.

Billí Fuair daoine buillí uisce ón gComhairle Contae agus ó Uisce Éireann le déanaí. A thuilleadh don bhfastaoim. Duirt fear liom gur scríg sé dtí an mBainisteoir Contae le déanaí ag éileamh céill ón mbainistíocht. Tá billí uisce feirme á gcur chuige le roinnt blianta cé gur coras príomháideach atá aige. Ach ambaice, gur é a dúirt ionadaí ón gComhairle go mbeidh ortha siúd go raibh uisce feirme comhairle acu roimhe seo fiú is má tá uisce príobháideach acu le roinnt blianta go mbeidh ortha díol as an uisce ná faigheann siad, is léir anois. An ag magadh ar fad fén bhfeirmeoir atá na daoine seo, díol as uisce ná faigheann siad agus ná fuil uatha ! nó an gceapann siad gur ‘stúmpaí amadán/óinsigh ar fad a mheasaid iad na daoine seo a chuir dua ortha féin uisce príomháideach a sholáthar dá bhfeirmeacha. Deirim-se neamhaistear leat. Aosta I suirbhé sa bhFrainnc le déanaí fuaireadh amach gur sásta go mór iad siúd atá ós chionn 55 bliain na iad siúd atá fena bhun. Rómhaibh ata?

Imreoirí a bheadh sa bhféachaint ná Kealy, Griffin, Geaney M, Galvin Fitzgerald F, O’Sullivan D, Walsh S, O’Brien. Fitzgerald C.G. Féachann Corcaigh lán do cheol ach bhuafadh Ciarraí má cuirfid chuige- agus déarfainn na beidh aon cheal misnigh ortha. Bua mhór ag Sligeach ar Roscommán. Iontas na n-iontas. Nár chuaidh Sligeach an- ghairid an bheart a dhéanamh ar Chiarraí i dTrá Lí, murach gur shabháil D Ó Murchú, speach pionóis sna neómataí dearnacha agus gur thug Longfhort a ndóthain mór le déanamh do Chiarraí lá fliuch salach i Longfort. San idir linn is ar chomhscór a bhí An Ghaeltacht agus Brosna i straith chomórtas caide an chontae, i Roinn a Trí. Bhí cúigear ar iarraidh ortha, cuid acu gortaithe agus cuid acu imithe go Meiriceá. An éireóidh leis an nGaeltacht dul ó Roinn a trí go Roinn a dó? D’fheadfadh go dtárlódh, ach caithfidh rath na rathainí a bheith ortha má cháilíonn siad don árdú.

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service Gp Visit Cards For Children Aged Under 6 Question I’ve heard that young children can now visit the doctor for free but that they have to get a GP visit card. How do I get a card for my child? Answer From 1 July 2015, children under the age of six are entitled to free visits to a GP (family doctor) that is taking part in the free GP care for children under six scheme. All children aged under six who live in Ireland or who intend to live in Ireland for at least one year are eligible.

tells you whether your chosen GP accepts online registrations. If they do, you apply on21/08/2014 16:57 Page can 1 line at gpvisitcard.ie. If a GP doesn’t accept online registrations, or if you prefer to use a paper form, you can download the registration form from gpvisitcard.ie, bring it to the GP to sign, and then send it to: GP Visit Card – Under 6s, PO Box 12629, Dublin 11.

Project4:Layout 1

Your child will be included in this scheme until the end of the month of their sixth birthday.

The expiry date is shown on the card. You will be notified approximately three months before it is due to expire. The card covers free GP visits, including home visits and out of hours, urgent GP care. It does not cover visits to hospital emergency departments. If you have any questions about registering for the scheme, you can phone Lo-call 1890 252 919.

To get a GP visit card for children aged under six, you must register your child. To register, you will need: ·

Your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN)

• The PPSN of each child • Your choice of participating GP You are sent your child’s PPSN when you register their birth. If you do not have a PPSN for your child, contact Client Identity Services in the Department of Social Protection on Lo-call 1890 927 999 or email cis@welfare.ie. If your baby is under two months of age and you don’t have a PPSN yet, you can register and leave the PPSN blank and the HSE will write to you separately to get it.

Dingle outreach: 3rd Tuesday of every month in the old C.B.S Monastry Building , John Street

You can get a list of GPs who are taking part in the scheme at gpvisitcard.ie. The list also

foilsithe ag Abbey Theatre Press ‘The Irish Revival, which took place between 1891 and 1922, was an extraordinary era of literary achievement and political ferment. This period generated not only a remarkable crop of artists of world significance, but also a range of innovative political thinkers and activists, among the most influential that Ireland has produced. In contrast to the darker nineteenth century, the Revival stands out as an intense phase of intellectual rejuvenation that fashioned a new civic culture outside the scope of institutional religion, the colonial state and conventional politics. It created multiple forums in which intellectual exchange and artistic excellence were ecouraged, and where freedom of expression was upheld. Yet many of the achievements, complexities and nuances of this largely progressive and intellectually inquiring moment remain hidden. The aim of this publication is to provide a set of readings and keynote statements to reflect the range and intensity of cultural exchanges.’ - Abbey Theatre Press - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis
