Dingle Notes Richard Williams We had a great attendance at the recent Neighbourhood Watch/ Business Watch meeting which was addressed by members of An Garda Siochana. Six people volunteered to help progress the idea of setting up such schemes in Dingle and are to meet the groups involved in the Text Alert system shortly. A big Cead Mile Failte to all involved in the Dingle Film Festival and especially to Director Maurice Galway and Ryans Daughter star Sarah Myles This film certainly opened our Peninsula to the world stage and intentionally or otherwise was the main forerunner to the huge tourism business which has built steadily since the early seventies here in Corca Dhuibhne. Mile Buiochas Sarah!!! Comhgairdeachas to the management and staff of Garveys Supervalu on the well merited national award for their magnificent Dingle Premises . Also well done to Benners Hotel and other business outlets in this area who have been the recipients of national and county awards in the hospitality sector over the past few months. It certainly proves that if you put in the effort and go the extra mile the rewards will follow.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 22nd of March is ‘By the Sea” . Written and directed by Angelina Jolie Pitt, and produced by and starring Jolie Pitt and her husband Brad Pitt , the film is a ronmantic drama set in France during the mid-1970s where Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner. On Tuesday 29 March @ 8.45 the Film Club will screen “A Bigger Splash” . Starring Tilda Swinton , Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson the film is a thriller about the lives of a high profile couple, a famous rock star and a filmmaker who are vacationing and recovering on the idyllic sun-drenched and remote Italian island of Pantelleria. There lives are disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter - creating a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved.

Engraving History In this centenary year of the 1916 rising, local artist and slate craftsman Ken Bolger has been commissioned to produce limited edition replicas of the proclamation. He is privileged to be able to use original slates from the Richmond barracks Dublin where the leaders of the 1916 rebellion were court martialed and sentenced to death. In this centenary year the Richmond barracks are being fully refurnished and transformed into a museum and art gallery in recognition of its importance in Irish history. The first of these unique pieces of art has already been presented to the lord mayor of Dublin the right honorable Criona Ni Dhálaigh by Ken in the presence of the architect responsible for preserving this important site. Slate craftsman Ken Bolger was delighted with the project: “This really is an honour that I am very excited about. Last year I had the privilege to work with the original slates from Peig Sayers’ house on the Blasket Island with poet Darina Ní Cinnéide to preserve her written and spoken word. Then this year to actually be able to preserve part of the Richmond barracks a truly important historical building and pass on to future generations the exact words which began to shape our independence is something I will be telling the grandchildren “

Do you have broken items lying around your house, crying out for some TLC? Or things which are no longer functional but have useful parts which might become something else? Or even things which you imagined would make a sculpture but don't have the time or the skills to create something beautiful with it? Then the Dingle Repair Cafe is for you... In the last number of years Repair Cafes have been popping up around the world to encourage people to fix things rather than dumping useful things in landfills. In these days of cheap consumer goods we have become a throwaway society where its easier to buy a new item rather than fix what we have. This is just not sustainable. Repair Cafes provide a supportive environment in which people are involved in fixing things for themselves and possibly learning new skills in the process. You can come along with your broken stuff and get help fixing it, borrow a tool to fix it or get advice on how to fix if it cannot be fixed on the day. There will be a number of people there who can offer help/advice on items such as household appliances, textiles, small furniture repair, electronic hardware, tool sharpening and also some creative minds who will be upcycling items and artists who will be creating works of art with unused items. So what are you waiting for? ... dust off all that old stuff and bring it to Kennedy's Bar, Goat Street on Sunday the 3rd of April between 2pm and 5pm. If you have a useful skill and would like to become involved or like to know more, contact Breda on 087 2438697 or Darach on 087 2153758.

Farming News Louis Murchan GLAS Bird and Bat Box Update. The Department of Agriculture has qualified its requirements for these two measures, and now require that only ONE bird box is allowable per tree of post, and not multiple boxes, as previously stated. Additionally, in the case of bat boxes, they must be grouped in clusters of at least three boxes per tree of building, and ech box must face a different direction, in these clusters. This may sound complicated, but is unfortunately the requirements now, so must be met. Extension to Deadline to Complete Certain GLAS Actions Due to Wet Weather The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, today announced that the deadline for completion of the GLAS actions “Protection of Watercourses from Bovines” and “Riparian Margins” is being extended from the 31st March 2016 to the 31st July 2016 in light of the exceptionally wet winter. He acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers due to the exceptional weather conditions and recognised the need to allow them sufficient time to meet the conditions of the GLAS Scheme. The work which farmers have to undertake to fulfil these actions require additional time and the Dept of Agriculture will be of assistance to them in the completion of these important tasks and allow them to carry out the necessary work at a time when their land has recovered from the wet winter we have experienced this year. Extension to Closing Date for Submission of 2016 Nitrates Derogation Applications The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today announced an extension to the closing date for submission of 2016 Nitrates Derogation applications. The decision to extend the closing date to Friday 15th April 2016 was taken in light of the significant interest in new Derogation applications. Nitrates Derogation applications can only be submitted online using the using the Department’s on-line facilities. Opening of 2016 Basic Payment Scheme and Greening Online Applications The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine today announced the opening of the online application facility for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the Greening Scheme. This will facilitate online applications for BPS, Greening and the Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) Scheme. In 2015, some 93,000 farmers applied online and we are hoping to significantly increase that number this year given the range of benefits which online applications provide for farmers. The Minister confirmed that the closing date for the BPS in 2016 would be Monday 16 May but urged all farmers and advisors to avail of the opening of the online facility now rather than waiting until closer to the closing date. Following on from the roll out in 2015 of online application to farmers who have a requirement under Greening, or are in partnerships, or are in the Organic Farming Scheme, in 2016 GLAS farmers will move to online BPS application. Greater use of the online application system will allow the Department to deliver a range of benefits to farmers in terms of the accuracy and efficiency with which BPS applications are processed. In particular, in built validations on the system will help to ensure consistency between GLAS and BPS applications for farmers. Farmers are urge to avail of the opportunity to apply for the BPS online at this early stage. It is open for farmers to do this either as individuals or through an agent. Higher levels of online applications will allow my Department to continue to improve on the delivery to farmers of essential payments under schemes such as BPS and the ANC. Forest Fire Risk Warning The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine wishes to remind farmers, forest owners, forest managers and members of the public that an inherent risk of fire exists during spring months on certain types of land, particularly in upland areas. The Department also wishes to remind the general public that a number of major wildfires have occurred in recent years which destroyed or damaged property, including farmland and forests. It should be noted that, following dry weather patterns, a wildfire risk can quickly develop in all areas where flammable vegetation such as grasses, gorse and heather are present, especially in proximity to forests and other assets. Land owners, rural dwellers and 12 West Kerry Live
other land users are asked to maintain a high degree of vigilance regarding fire over the coming months. The Department urges all forest owners and forest managers to check their fire plans and to ensure that fire-breaks are clear of flammable vegetation and forest access routes are clear of obstructions. Land owners are reminded that it is illegal, under the Wildlife Acts, to burn growing vegetation on uncultivated land between 1st March and 31st August and that persons engaged in such illegal activity are liable to prosecution. The Department also warns landowners that land found to have been burned during the specified closed season for burning would be considered automatically ineligible under the various support schemes, and that a variety of detection systems, including satellite based systems, were now in place to detect fire hotspots and trigger more detailed eligibility inspections where required. Suspicious activity should be reported to the Gardaí and uncontrolled or unattended fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services. Forest owners must be especially vigilant in protecting their investments. BE PREPARED. BE VIGILANT. STAMP OUT FOREST FIRES. 2016 Basic Payment scheme Eligible land, The basic requirement is that one eligible hectare of land declared = one bps entitlement activated for payment purposes eligibility. In order to draw down payment in respect of your BPS entitlements, you must have an “eligible hectare” to accompany each entitlement. In this context, an “eligible hectare” is land that is used for an agricultural activity and includes land used to grow cereals, oilseeds, short rotation coppice, Miscanthus, sinensis, protein crops, sugar beet, maize, fodder beet, turnips, mangolds, kale, vegetables, potatoes, grass for silage or hay or grazing. It also includes maintaining an agricultural area in a state suitable for grazing or cultivation. If you are no longer in REPS but wish to retain former REPS 4a habitats you can do so by declaring them as Designated Habitats. In this way the areas continue to be eligible for BPS but the habitat becomes a landscape feature under cross compliance so it must be retained. Areas under Wild Bird Cover and Riparian Zones are also eligible for BPS provided you are in AEOS or GLAS and undertaking the relevant actions in that scheme. In determining the eligibility of land applied upon to draw down payment, a number of particular conditions have to be complied with, namely, the land must be managed by the applicant. If the applicant is not the owner of the land, he/she must be in a position to provide verifiable evidence that the land is available to him/her for the required period as set out in the “Land Availability Rule”. There must be independent and suitable access for animals and/or machinery for the farming enterprise being conducted. Independent access means access by public or private roadway or by a defined right of way. Access over adjoining landowners land, or over land which is subject to a lease or rental agreement to another person, is not acceptable. There must be appropriate fencing for the farming enterprise being conducted. Appropriate fencing means stock proof fencing that will adequately control the applicant’s and neighbouring farmer’s animals. In this regard temporary electric fencing will not suffice as a stock proof barrier between two applicants. In mountain/hill areas this generally means sheep fencing. There must be defined external boundaries except in the case of commonage. If at inspection the applicant claims to be farming the land with animals then the type of animals must be appropriate to the land and there must be appropriate handling facilities available on the lands to meet the animals’ welfare requirements. Afforested land –eligible from 2009 With effect from 2009, eligible land that was declared in an SPS application in 2008 and was afforested in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016 can continue to be eligible to draw down a BPS payment in 2016 provided it satisfies the conditions outlined in DAFM’s Afforestation Measures. The Land Availability Rule To claim the direct payment under the 2016 BPS, all of the hectares of land declared by you to support your claim (owned, rented-in and leased-in) must be subject to an agricultural activity for a period from
www.westkerrylive.ie
the beginning of the year until after 31 May 2016or for a period before 31 May 2016 to 31 December 2016.Land that is declared by an applicant on the basis that it is available to him/her on 31 May only on foot of an agreement with another party will not be eligible for payment. In the case of the ANC scheme, the land must be available to the applicant for the entire calendar year. An eleven month conacre agreement will be deemed to also be eligible but the applicant may be deemed responsible for breaches of the cross compliance requirements for the year. Short Term Grazing Agreements In the case of short term grazing agreements entered into after 31st May 2016 it should be noted that this land will not be eligible for ANC to either party to the agreement. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary
Lenten ceasefire. Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald is in Washington - he presented Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill with a blackthorn stick .
By Ted Creedon
Last night’s storm caused serious damage to CFCD’s glasshouse in Farren - around 80 large sheets of glass were smashed. Britain’s Prince Andrew is to marry a Sarah Ferguson this summer. The Queen is reported to be ‘over the Moon’ about it all.
Tuesday, March 18.
Tuesday, March 11, 1986. Chaired meeting of CBS Primary School Parents’ Committee tonight. Our income from the Hillgrove Social was almost £500 plus £170 from the free cinema. So, total funds collected these past two months comes to £982-40. The money will be used to improve the school library. We also discussed the need for an athletics club in the area. It’s a pity that local kids don’t get a chance to develop athletic talent. There was a very good club here a few years ago. There was a landslide on the Conor Pass road - near the summit - and the road was closed for some time.
Thursday, March 13. ‘ A sad week for Dingle’ is what people are saying about the closure of the Skellig Hotel. For the past couple of days the County Sheriff and his team have been removing all furniture and fittings to meet the hotel’s debts. Gardaí were on duty during the removal in case any local creditor would try to make up their losses by confiscating material goods. The place now looks like the Hotel Skeleton and may end up being the haunt of vandals. Jobs are lost, l ocal shops and restaurants will lose customers. Food suppliers will also lose out. Still, it should mean more business for other local hotels and guest houses unless some new group are willing to invest in the hotel.
Thursday, March 20. The pre-publication flyer arrived today for the Dingle Archaeological Survey which is nearing completion after being set in motion in the summer of 1981. Over 2,000 sites and monuments have been recorded. This is probably the biggest project of its kind undertaken on the peninsula since the last Ordnance Survey in the 1890s. Police in Sweden have no positive leads in the assassination of their Prime Minister Olof Plame. He was shot in the back while walking home from a cinema with his wife on February 28. He did not have a bodyguard that night.
Friday, March 21. A grey, dull day buy by late afternoon it had turned very stormy again. The British Met Office recorded a wind speed of 173 miles per hour on the summit of Cairngorm in the eastern Highlands of Scotland last night - the highest UK wind speed ever recorded. Jacques Chirac is the new Prime Minister of France and as he was making his first televised speech a bomb exploded in a Paris shopping centre - 2 killed and many seriously injured.
Friday, March 14. More human remains from the Challenger space shuttle disaster have been recovered from the seabed off Florida along with flight recorders and computers. There was a weird story on the front page of the British newspaper The Sun yesterday about a well known comedian which stated; ‘Freddie Starr ate my Hamster’.

Saturday, March 15. The first daffodils are just starting to bloom in the garden - much later than normal because of the very cold, dry weather last month. Seems to be a lot of extra traffic and visitors around the area for the holiday weekend. Spent a lazy afternoon watching Ireland being beaten 10 - 9 by Scotland. The Irish deserved to win this one despite their poor performance all season. It was a great game - especially the last 15 minutes. England were massacred by France 29 -10 in Paris and were lucky to get off so lightly.
Live Music on Good Friday
Sunday, March 16. Drove to Castlegregory after lunch and browsed through the furniture store which seems to do a good trade in furniture imported from Holland. The place used to be a dance hall and cinema at one time. The kids had to be restrained from bouncing on everything. The ESB was cut off for over half an hour this evening, just as we were about to have our tea. A hotel collapsed in Singapore yesterday and 33 people died.

Monday, March 17. St Pat’s Day We all went to town at midday to see the annual parade. The Fife and Drum Band had carried out the tradition of playing up and down the town at 6 o’clock this morning. The parade had the usual odd selection of hurriedly prepared floats plus a couple of bands. The day turned very stormy and cold with heavy rain later. The kids stuffed themselves with bars and sweets - taking advantage of the 14 West Kerry Live

Conor McGregor Tadhg Evans It’s a few seconds after 6 am in a house on the outskirts of Dingle town. Six twentysomethings are staring at a screen that’s bringing them a fight from the other side of the planet. One minute has elapsed in the second round of Conor McGregor’s welterweight contest against Nate Diaz, and the Irishman is controlling affairs with impressive authority. Diaz’ face is painted red. McGregor cracked the skin over the American’s right eye only a few minutes ago, and a sustained onslaught has barely given that cut a moment’s peace. In that Dingle sitting room, opinions on McGregor are free to air: “He’s all over him” “He’s actually a monster” “His hands are down by his sides. He knows he has it” “Diaz can’t last long more” Three minutes later, those views are being mangled to fit what they had just seen. McGregor, the new face of the UFC, opts to tap out as Diaz’ right arm wraps around his neck and constricts like a python. “F*** it” “He’s finished” “Why did he have his hands down? He got way too cocky” “He won’t ever come back from this” Those same opinions were surely being expressed in houses all over a tiny country. It might have been an unearthly hour on our traditional day of rest, but McGregor has been dragging the Irish from their beds on a regular basis for over a year now. Rarely have our sports mad people been this enthused about any of their athletes. They say a week is a long time in politics – so what? In sport, any event can change in minutes, even seconds. At 6.00 am, McGregor was prancing proudly around his octagon at the MGM Grand, seemingly destined to wrap up a victory in a routine manner. By 6.02, some doubted if he even had a future in fighting. McGregor always promised he’d be humble in defeat as well as victory. On Sunday morning, he finally had to prove the former before a worldwide audience. It’s hard to take your beating, harder still when you’ve promised to annihilate and you’ve fallen in front of literally millions. ‘Usually, when I fight a man in the division in which I am champion, they crumble under those shots. Nate took them very well.’ ‘I enjoyed the fact that a person could take the shots and keep coming, He kept his composure.’ ‘It was simply a battle of energy in there and he got the better of that.’ ‘I make no excuses. It is what it is. I came up short.’ 18 West Kerry Live
Some have taken McGregor’s previous fits of showboating literally – but to the more reasonable, his antics are more childishly endearing than malicious. When the public gets to see the real McGregor, they always approve. You can question his ground-and-pound, and his taste in clothing, but his class should not be in doubt. The same can’t be said for some of his colleagues: “I’m not surprised motherf***ers” – Nate Diaz “The thing about that loss is that CMac gave up once he found himself in a tough position” – Aljamain Sterling “This is not featherweight. Soft!!!” – Rafael Dos Anjos And the best for last: “Your fairy tale is over. You got nowhere to run now. Time for a rematch” - Jose Aldo There’s kicking a man when he’s down, then there’s repeatedly reversing over him with an articulated lorry. Contrary to what Aldo suggested, the McGregor story isn’t over. It’s just gotten more interesting. Before Sunday, ‘The Notorious’ hadn’t lost a
fight in over five years. So why now, at the tender age of 27, should he be dismissed with disdain? Maybe his ultimate ambition of owning and defending belts across a serious of weight divisions needs to be revised, but would that failure on its own render him a complete loser? Muhammad Ali once opined that he learned more from one defeat than he did from all the victories he had accumulated. Had McGregor finished the job he started so well on Sunday morning, the weakness of his ground-andpound would not have been examined with anything like the intensity that it will be now. Having his hands down by his knees seemed praiseworthy when trouble seemed distant, only a mark of showmanship, but now it’s being looked at in a more sinister light, a contributor to a sapping defeat – as it should be. With McGregor more aware of his deficiencies than at any other point in his career to date, might he be more dangerous from here? Aldo is expected to be McGregor’s next opponent, more than likely at July’s UFC 200. If The Notorious is beaten, then yes, it’s okay to doubt. If he repeats his December victory over the Brazilian, most will re-engage with the most enchanting story in recent Irish sporting history.

Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium are celebrating their 20th Anniversary . Over the years, the aquarium has invested over €5 million in new exhibits and developments such as our Sandtiger sharks, Gentoo Penguins in 2011 & Creepy Crawlies last year. To commemorate our 20th anniversary we are opening two new exhibits at a cost of €750,000 on St. Patricks Day. These two new exhibits will add greatly to the visitor experience here at the aquarium. We continue our aim in the conservation of all marine and freshwater flora and fauna through education. You may have already met some of our reptiles, the Green Iguanas and Red Footed Tortoises, along our Amazon section if you have visited recently. Now we have some adorable Asian Small Clawed Otters and other reptiles which will add to the wonderful world of Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium. In line with our freshwater conservation theme, our Asian Otters can be spotted running around their outdoor enclosure or curled up sleeping together. These otters are the smallest of the world's 13 otter species. Their home range includes Indonesia, southern China, southern India, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia. Where else would you be able to experience how these secretive animals communicate and play other than right here in Dingle!
more! These exhibitions include many species under threat in the wild due to over-collection for the pet trade and habitat destruction. Most of our reptiles have come from reptile rescue centres in Ireland and UK. We hope to promote their conservation as it would be a shame to lose these prehistoric creatures. Our daily handling sessions highlight their decline in the wild and the importance of appropriate pet care as well as an up close encounter. Through hands on education, we hope every visitor has an amazing experience and comes away with an appreciation of these scaly characters! Spread the word! The new exhibit will open on March 17th so why not come and visit our new comers and experience these amazing animals up close. Will you be brave enough to touch a snake this St. Patricks Day?
Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium has also brought in some snakes this St. Patricks Day. Our new section includes Saltwater Crocodiles and Boa Constrictors with frequent handling sessions of Bearded Dragons, Corn Snakes, Pythons and much

Students from Corca Dhuibhne starred at the annual Coirm Gael Linn festival held in Tralee on Tuesday, 8 March last! They were among almost 250 exhuberant young performers from primary schools in Counties Kerry, Limerick and Cork who treaded the boards of the Siamsa Tíre theatre during the day. Pupils from first to sixth classes staged variety shows that incorporated music, singing, dancing, story-telling and acting – all ‘as Gaeilge’ – with a theme of their own choice. The auditorium was filled to capacity and the appreciative audience, comprising schoolchildren, parents and teachers, were treated to a great display of musical and dramatic talent. They were also entertained before and after each show by the popular entertainer, Giggles the clown! While Coirm Gael Linn is not a competition, each show is reviewed by a guest adjudicator and a written critique is given to each teacher. At the adjudicator’s discretion, special merit awards or ‘gradaim’, are also presented for outstanding performances by individuals or ensembles during the shows. On this occasion, Gerry Motherway complimented the teachers for the imaginative, lively, exhuberant and atmospheric 20 West Kerry Live

It’s The Lambing Season Do You Know Where Your Dog Is ? Lynne Stratton This is not a nice subject but it needs to be addressed. Nobody thinks that their pet is capable of harming a sheep but they are. It’s in them to chase and hunt. Even if it all starts as a game, the dog enters a field, the sheep run, the dog joins in, then suddenly the prey drive kicks in and there’s no turning back. You’re now looking at the little fluffy person on the sofa, thinking no, they wouldn’t. Size doesn’t come into it, a Chihuahua could run through the sheep, it probably wouldn’t catch one but the fear and panic it would cause is great, which could result in sheep running through fences and aborting their lambs. The shock to the sheep can kill the unborn lamb but not abort which leads to infection, which if not spotted can kill the sheep. It goes without saying that a larger dog can do horrendous physical damage, we’ve all read about it and possibly seen it. So you could go off to work in
the morning, leave your dog on the backdoor mat where you will find it when you get home, he or she could have been at the above all day and you would have no clue. Equally you could be out walking your dog, and it just takes off, into a field of sheep - or any livestock come to that. I’m not saying you have to have your dog on a lead at all times, just be aware of your surroundings and if you come upon livestock, call your dog in and put it on the lead. My dogs are well behaved and I’ve done a lot of training with them, but I would always put them on their leads if I come across livestock. Also remember that it is a criminal offence for dogs to chase sheep and they could end up being put down, also the farmer is well within his rights to shoot the dog if caught in the act. If there’s any farmers reading this it’s no harm to put signs if you have pregnant sheep because we have lots of tourist come here to walk and they bring dogs. If you have any question or worries about your dogs attitude towards live stock, please don’t hesitate to call, Lynne 0871309803 or Pauline 0877071385 Lynne Stratton run Muddy Matters Dog Grooming Service

Annascaul Singing Club A keynote feature of the Annascaul Singing Club's gatherings is variety. Whether it's unexpected musical visitors from overseas, a ukulele band dropping in or indeed unusual songs delivered by local folk including our own splendid multi-national core group of singers, there's often something different to savour. The February gathering at Patcheen's was no exception. Irish traditional songs were complemented by self-penned ditties, sultry jazz numbers and even a pair of Russian folk-songs delivered harmoniously by two members of our regular group. Further spice was added to the mix by a pair of storytellers from Keele, members of the Hanafin family, on their first visit to the gathering. Their stories were not only entertaining and well-drawn but were terrific feats of memory. Lately, we were asked to join in with 'Annascaul Rising', the village's weekend-long commemoration of the events of Easter 1916. Accordingly, we'll be meeting at Patcheen's Bar, Main Street at 9pm on Thursday 24th March. As usual whatever verses you have are welcome, but we particularly invite songs of that momentous time and any other stirring lyrics of resistance, love and peace from home and abroad. And remember you can come in and have a listen if that's your preference. As always its free and there will no doubt be some fun and wit along with the songs.

Flying The Wrong Way
Often his journeys were interrupted because of mechanical faults. But he did achieve a non-stop flight from New York to San Antonio, Texas, covering 1,900 miles, in nineteen hours.
Bert McCann
Obtaining a trans-oceanic licence eluded him though. In early July he flew from San Diego to New York having, according to the American National Biography, lied to get a temporary cross-country licence. Claiming he was heading for Texas he made for New York arriving 27 hours and 2700 miles later with a leaking fuel tank. But this was just a start. On the 18th of July he got permission to fly back to California. Having been warned not to fly due west for fear of flying into the Floyd Bennett Field's control hut, he took off uneventfully in a easterly direction. Twenty-eight hours later watchers at Baldonnel Aerodrome in Dublin saw a small aircraft coming into land. When it it hit the tarmac and eventually rolled to a halt the cockpit door opened. Douglas Corrigan emerged and announced, “Just got in from New York. Where am I? I intended to fly to California.”
He was a building labourer, a worker with his hands who completed one of the most perilous journeys possible in his time, published an autobiography and starred in a feature film depicting his exploits. He claimed that his greatest feat was achieved by mistake and he stuck to that story ‘til the end of his days. Douglas 'Wrong Way' Corrigan was born in Galveston Texas and christened Clyde. Subsequently he changed his first name legally. Existing references often mention his Irish ancestry but the details are lost in the mists of time. Clan Corrigan claims him as one of their own on its US website. It points out that the surname Corrigan is derived from O' Coraidhegain, itself possibly a derivative of 'coraidhe', a hero,a champion. Not entirely inappropiate given his subsequent adventures. What is known, is that he was one of three children, his parents divorced and his mother brought him and his siblings to live in Los Angeles. Douglas left school early and went working in construction. In the autumn of 1925, at the age of eighteen, he saw some folk paying for short leisure flights at an airfield near his home. Immediately captivated he signed up at the field for flying lessons. Twenty, fifteen minute training flights later, he took to the skies on his first solo excursion, ninety years ago on 25th March 1926. In between the lessons he had taken to hanging around with the aircraft mechanics and learning the trade. The San Diego Air Service then gave him work and he serviced planes and helped out at the SDAS's associate the Airtech Flying School. Irish writer and historian Miles Dungan on his blog records that, 'He quickly graduated to stunt flying – much to the annoyance of the flying school whose planes he was jeopardising. Corrigan paid no attention to their disapproval, simply taking their planes to a more distant aerodrome and performing stunts during his lunch hour, unseen by his bosses. The watchword for Corrigan seems to have been ‘out of sight out of mind.’ Not long after, Charles Lindbergh appeared on his horizon. The soonto-be-famous aviator was in 1926 preparing for his epic New York – Paris airflight , the first solo flying endeavour on that route. The Ryan Aeronautical Company where Corrigan had started working hadn't been doing well and had half-a-dozen aircraft in its hanger due to cancelled orders. One of them became the famous Spirit of St Louis which Lindbergh piloted to Paris. Corrigan worked on the plane, constructing the fuel tanks, instrument panel and extending the wing-span of the craft to give it extra lift. In the process he was bitten once again by an eradicable bug. This time it was the determination to also fly the Atlantic solo and become more feted than the long-distance flyer. Over the next nine years or so our hero had a workaday existence. That is, if you can describe life of stunt-flying and 'barnstorming' aerial displays in such terms. At times he also worked at 'ordinary' jobs as a pilot, mechanic, flight instructor, and airport manager at airfields in southern California. For a time, in New York, he was transporting wealthy private passengers. Various second-hand planes came in and out of his life. Then in 1936 he bought a made-over OX5 Curtiss Robin for $325. Throughout that time he attempted several long-distance flights usually illegally, as he couldn't get a permit for his rickety planes. 28 West Kerry Live
Welcomed warmly in Ireland he claimed he'd flown the wrong way due to broken instruments and weather conditions. As it happens his compass was twenty years old and of course he had no radio or parachute. Since he had fitted extra-capacity fuel tanks at the front of his airplane he could only see out of the side windows. One of them had again sprung a leak and he claimed he hadn't noticed till his feet got cold from their soaking in the gasoline. Fearful of inflammable fumes he solved the problem by punching a hole in the floor wit ha screwdriver to drain off the liquid. Physical sustenance came from two chocolate bars, two boxes of fig bars and twenty-five gallons of water. The US ambassador to Ireland came to talk with him and though cordial, confiscated his licence, It seems it took a six-hundred word cable to telegraph the list of US regulations which were broken in undertaking the flight. The journalist H. R. Knickerbocker, who met Corrigan in Ireland after his arrival, wrote in 1941, 'His plane was the most wretched-looking jalopy. As I looked over it at the Dublin aerodrome I really marvelled that anyone should have been rash enough even to go in the air with it, much less try to fly the Atlantic' After being brought to meet the Irish President Douglas Hyde, Corrigan set sail for home on a transatlantic liner. His Robin came with him but packed in a crate this time. A ticker-tape welcome in New York attracted over a million people, which was bigger than that accorded Lindbergh. A book deal for a tome entitled 'That's My Life' and a movie 'The Flying Irishman' starring the pilot as himself, followed. He returned to commercial flying but became a test pilot during WW II. For some years his name became synonymous for taking a wrong way, as in, 'doing a Corrigan'. Other than the occasional speaking engagement he eventually settled into obscurity. At one point he bought an orange grove which was successful enough. Apparently he learned how to plant and grow it opportunistically. Perched on the roof of his barn he watched what his neighbour's did and copied their working practices. He maintained to the end of his life in 1995 at the age of eighty-eight, that the Dublin flight happened by mistake. Few people believed him but his wife Elizabeth once said in an interview, 'He told me he flew the wrong way and he never ever told me a lie'

Greta’s Herbs Greta McCarthy, O’Brien What a miserable Spring it has been! Work in the garden has been slow and tedious- I can’t seem to get to the end of any job. I am easily a month behind with my annual clean up! Hard prune herbs such as fennel, lavender and lovage to ground level with a secateurs and loppers! Lighter, wispy stems of oregano, mints and St. Johns wort can be done quickly with a sharp clippers- a blunt one will drive you crazy so go and get it sharpened if needs be. Top dress all plants with compost and general fertiliser. This is just the tonic they need after a long hard winter. These same principals apply to all other plants however shrubs will require specific pruning depending on the variety. Although I specialise in herb growing; I have been trained in all aspects of ornamental Horticulture. I am delighted to see a clump of wild garlic finally looks at home in a moist shady spot. I tried unsuccessfully to grow it from seed and eventually gave in and bought a plant last year. It will probably now take over the place which I don’t mind as I love the natural effect of wild gardening - a concept not a lot of people understand. Wild garlic is much sought after by modern chefs so I am sure I will find some takers if it needs digging out. I know I may have said this before but it is extremely important not to mistake it for Convallaria ( lily of the valley) which is deadly poisonous. They look identical and both have white flowers in the same season. The obvious differentiating factor is the strong aroma which exudes from wild garlic. The centre of my garden universe is my polytunnel - I adore propagation particularly from seed. It is a delicate process but hugely rewarding. I have become extremely impatient waiting for temperatures to rise to 10°C so I dragged out an old electric propagator I had tucked away and thought this will do the trick for my tomatoes and Chili peppers
only to discover it was broken and would not heat up! I used it anyway placing it near a sunny windowsill and was delighted the double glazing effect gave successful results. I have lots of tomato seedlings of plum and jersey heirloom. They have remained at the seed leaf stage for two weeks due to the low night temperatures. Once they produce a pair of true leaves they will be plucked gently from their trays and potted upto hopefully grow into sturdy plants. The general rule when sowing seed is to cover it with a fine layer of multipurpose compost. I recently purchased a sieve so I will see if this makes any difference when covering fine seed such as thyme. Larger seed such as nasturtium, sunflower, courgette and cucumber need to be sown a little deeper in pots these will require an extra sprinkling of compost. Careful watering is essential - too much can rot the seed. There are certain varieties such as strawberries and petunias which require no covering and are surface sown. To prevent these from drying out cover the tray with an opaque plastic bag- in my case the glass propagator keeps in the humidity. It is crucial to transplant seedlings at the correct stage they must have developed an adequate root system, if taken prematurely they may die and if taken too late when their roots are entangled they can end up getting battered and bruised! If purchasing plants presently it is good practise to leave them in their pots outside for at least a week. This hardens them off and also allows time for roots to develop, particularly if they have recently been potted. Full details of my herb stock list can be viewed on my website. Again I must advise sowing seed in batches every forthright. As the saying goes ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ but for me - it’s ‘don’t put all your seeds in one tray’ Greta McCarthy O’Brien qualified in Amenity Horticulture at Botanic Gardens Dublin in 1983 and has been growing herbs in Annascaul for over 10 years. Responding to Toddler Tantrums
calm reassuring tone of voice. Try saying ‘you are feeling upset I am here to help you feel safe’.
Using Emotionally Responsive Parenting in a Mindful Way to Support Toddlers Who Have Temper Tantrums.
3. Stay calm as this helps her or him feel secure. Remember to take a pause to connect with your own feelings and if you need to, take a few deep breaths… what I call ‘the sacred pause’. When you stay calm your child is developing the knowledge that you can accept their big feelings and soothe them. This lays down a solid foundation for their future as your child learns that that you can be trusted and when they get older they will know it is okay to go to you to share worries and concerns that they may have.
Anne Healy
4. Use distraction as your child’s naturally developing curiosity will be triggered and as a result they begin to calm down. 5. When they calm down you can try saying something like ‘now you are calm and feeling okay again, you felt ( whatever feeling you think distressed him or her) and it upset you’ This will help them internalise that they were successful in calming down thus laying messages to their developing brain that they can learn to regulate their feelings.
B. Testing the Limits Tantrums
Cartún: Dómhnal Ó Bric Scientific Fact: Temper Tantrums are important for your child’s development! It is worth remembering that having tantrums are important for your child’s emotional and social development. (Maybe some parents reading this may think that you and your child could do without the tantrums!!) But the reason tantrums are important is due to the fact that ‘the emotional regulation of a child’s feelings during storms of feelings enables them to establish essential brain pathways for managing stress and being assertive in later life’ - ‘The Science of Parenting’ Margot Sunderland. Approximately 70% of toddlers have at least one temper tantrum a day. It is a time in their lives that their feelings are very intense and overwhelming. Parents have told me that they find their children’s tantrums difficult as they trigger a part of themselves that expects the child to understand what they ask them to do and when the child will not comply their buttons are pressed! So at times you the parent may feel that despite your best efforts your child continues to have tantrums. Try the following suggestions as they may be useful for you. There are two types of tantrums: Distress Tantrums and Testing the Limits Tantrums. So how do you distinguish between the two types of tantrums? It can be difficult but usually you can tell the difference between your child’s distressing behaviour and a child who wants their own way. Both children need your compassion but need to be responded to differently.
A. Distress Tantrums
If your child is very distressed it will be very difficult to reason with them. This is due to the chemical changes that are taking place in their brain. As a consequence their ability to talk and listen to you are reduced. All they are able to do is release their very strong feelings to express their distress. When your child is truly distressed: 1. If at all possible begin to learn to ‘read’ your child’s emotional feelings. When you notice the lower lip quivering it is often time to distract your child to help them regulate the feelings that are about to come tumbling out. Some of the reasons children can have distress tantrums can include feeling misunderstood, frightened or sad. 2. Take your child’s distress seriously. Be sensitive and try to be emotionally tuned in to him or her. Sit with them or hold them and use a 38 West Kerry Live
You will know as a parent when your child is testing the limits! Usually your child is in control and are fully intent on getting their own way. They may have learned that shouting and stomping helps them get their own way. A typical example is wanting a toy or the ice cream in a shop and are fully intent on having it their way and they want it NOW! They will use a very reasoned argument (in their young mind) that you should meet all their demands and if they are not getting what they want they will try using very powerful and inappropriate behaviour. When your child is having one of these tantrums they really need to know that you are in charge! Your child also needs to know that you still love them but it was their behaviour that you did not like. If your child is demanding something and you have said NO that part of them that insists that they get their own way kicks in. So they may start stamping their little foot, and shouting louder. The following suggestions have been found useful by other parents to help children manage tantrums. Step by Step Approach to Testing the Limits Tantrums 1. It is helpful to connect with you child by placing your hands gently on his or her shoulder and make eye contact. This is often called ‘connect to reconnect’. When you make this connection with your child you are helping the part of your child’s brain that is out of control to calm down. Then say ‘right now you are upset but when your voice is as quiet as mine you will to feel calm’. 2. Remember not to reason with them, or argue or bribe them. You will be tempted. Especially if you have onlookers taking in the situation! Act like a broken record, repeat NO as often as you need to. 3. If your child is kicking or hurting you then you may need to hold them to keep them from hurting you as when this happens a child can feel that he has an inappropriate sense of power for his or her age. You may need to take your child away from the situation that is creating the problem. 4. When you have resolved the situation reassure them that you understood that they wanted their own way but it is your job as their parent to help them to accept rules. Point out how well they did to accept that they could not get what they wanted even though they were disappointed. Scientific Fact! Remember if you give in to your child’s demanding unreasonable requests they will struggle as they gets older to accept social rules and limits. TOP TIP - ‘Name it to Tame it’ is a term that Neuroscientist, Daniel Siegel coined! It simply means that when we name behaviours for children we help them make sense of their behaviour. So for example a child tells you that her best friend in school is really mean as she is playing with somebody else. Try saying to her ‘Right now I can see that you are feeling very sad and a little angry because your friend is not playing with you’. You could tell her ‘that when she does not play with you miss her and that you your feelings are hurt’ Anne Healy has an MA from the University of York in Play Therapy and is a Parent Advisor. Hope Guatemala: Finding New Ways By Seán McGillicuddy I
always wanted to get involved with a charity but I wanted it to happen organically. Two years ago I took part in Hope Guatemala’s charity run and was very impressed by how founder Eddy Dieckmann and friends were helping the people in Guatemala. Having said that, for two years I didn’t do anything else about this, or so I thought. Over the past few years I kept up friendship with Eddy and went along to many events that he organised to raise money including music gigs by up and coming local band Strange Attractor, concerts such as The Sacred Heart University Orchestra, and the launch of their book “Children of The Finca Florencia”. I decided it was time to get more involved. I went to a few meeting and afterwards I thought, “What can I really do to help, sure who I am?” Then Eddy asked me to go with him to Guatemala. I didn’t think about it, I just said “Yes” and before I knew it we were on a flight to Guatemala and it was an eye opening experience. The plan was to connect with Hope Guatemala, and their German sister charity Nuevo Dia’s, partner NGOs ASECSA and SEFCA in Guatemala, meet the communities which HG/ND have been helping, and to investigate new projects. It was an intense couple of weeks but very worthwile. My first impression was the positivity. Everyone smiles and welcomed us with open arms. We went to one community, a possible new project, called Finca California (Finca being the landowners land and California being nothing like the place you think of in North America). The sun was high in the sky the foliage was ripe but the situation was bleak. The families living here haven’t been paid for years for the work they are dong for the Finca owners, are not allowed to eat the crops they grow and have no entitlements, not even being allowed to keep a dog without the landlords permission (who they never see and you guessed it, lives in California). The amazing thing about the people living here is that they wanted to share with us the little food they had. All the other communities did the same and we always took what they offered so as not to offend. This was the first time that none of us could take what they were offering, the possibility of offending was outweighed by their own need. Needless to say, this could be one of HG/NDs new projects. To help this community, and other surrounding communities, HG/ND is in talks with their partner organisations to acquire land and invite the people of these 40 West Kerry Live
communities to farm it. This way the people ing a play. The play, titled Gan Imní (Without have a place to grow their own food and the Worry), is a bilingual show for children and possibility of bringing some of this food to the whole family. It’s a story about two friends market. Of course, there will be difficulties in who live separate lives and must discover that trying to do this. However, having seen the in order to find themselves they must first positive effect HG/ND has had on communilearn that they need each other. It connects ties which they have been involved with over children in Guatemala to children in Ireland the past 10 years and the can do attitude by tapping into Hope Guatemala’s ethos of of the people in these communities, not to “Children for Children” and “Help them Help mention the abundance of water, their own Themselves”. To do this the play connects produce and houses that are no longer just myths and legends of Guatemala, particularly made out of planks of wood, plastic sheeting that of the Guatemalan Worry Dolls, to myths and corrugated iron, it is my firm belief that and legends of Ireland and taps into a one HG/ND will be successful helping the people world mentality. of Finca California also. Gan Imní will play in Dingle during the Feile We travelled from the South to the North of na Bealtaine Festival on Saturday the 30th Guatemala visiting old and new projects by April at 2pm in An Lab. bus (an experience in itself, you’re best not looking out the window as the buses weave HOPE GUATEMALA - Charity Walk around the roads high up in the mountains 17th April at speed while passing out other buses) and pickups while meeting wonderful people. We were greeted with songs, music and prayer. We were even lucky enough to be a part of a traditional Mayan ceremony in which the Shaman thanked the sun, the earth and each other, accepting everybody and everything as one. She also told us that the day of the ceremony was a special day in the Mayan calendar as it was “The Day of New Ways”. Something which registered with us all as we began to consider new ways forward for the charity. The work that Hope Guatemala/Nuevo Dia are doing is not to be underestimated. They build water storage units for communities that would otherwise have to walk miles for clean water, educate and feed children every day in a nutrition centre which wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for them, have set up seed banks and promote positive agriculture, provide facilities for mid wives, to name but a few. All of their projects help communities to sustain themselves. Dr. Hugo, head of ASECSA, could not stress enough the importance of the work that Hope Guatemala/Nuevo Dia are doing. He told us that other NGOs often don’t visit the communities, that they are generally faceless so the people of the communities don’t understand why or where help usually comes from. “With Hope Guatemala/Nuevo Dia”, he said, “this Is different. By visiting them you give them hope and motivation. You show them that you care and that you are with them. You cannot underestimate the power of that for these people”. When people return from such experiences and often say things like “It was a life changing experience” or “You have to go Shop: Holyground, Dingle • Tel 066 9151077 there to experience it for yourself” which are all very valid and often true. Personally Workshop/Shop: Off the Slea Head Drive I found that before I travelled there I was Email: info@holdenleathergoods.com supporting Eddy Dieckmann and his charities Hope Guatemala/Nuevo Dia, now I find www.holdenleathergoods.com I’m supporting the people of Guatemala. It was an experience of culture and of hope, an eye opening one and one that I will be 7 days a week July & August processing for some time to come. So Seán, what are you doing next you VISITORS WELCOME might ask? Well I’ll tell you. I decided that I would like to use the skills I have to do OPEN ALL YEAR. something for the charity so I am produc-

Dead Leg Eddie O’ Grady A ‘’dead leg’’, also known as ‘’charley horse’’ or ‘’quadriceps contusion’’, is essentially an injury due to a traumatic blow, crushing the quadriceps muscle against the femur bone. The quadriceps is the muscle at the front of your thigh. The injury can be either intermuscular or intramuscular. Treatment depends on the type of contusion and grade in severity of the injury. An Intramuscular contusion occurs when the muscle gets torn within the sheath surrounding it. This causes the initial bleeding to cease within hours due to increased pressure within the muscle. However, the fluid and blood is not able to escape from the muscle sheath surrounding it resulting in considerable loss of function and a lot of pain. This can take days or weeks for a full recovery. You are unlikely to see any bruising with this type of contusion, especially in the early stages. In the case of intermuscular contusions, the muscle as well as part of the sheath surrounding it gets torn. This results in a longer bleeding time initially, especially if there is no use of ice therapy. The patient usually recovers faster from this type of dead leg, as the blood and fluids can easily flow away from the injury site. Bruising is often present in this type of contusion. Grading •Grade 1: Quadriceps pain, tightness in the thigh and a limp while walking. The swelling is very mild and so is the pain. The patient has almost complete range of motion upon stretching. •Grade 2: The patient is not able to walk properly and limps when walking. There is some swelling present and the patient will experience bouts of pain upon activity. There is pain upon extending the leg against resistance. Pressure on the site also produces pain and the patient is unable to completely flex the knee. •Grade 3: The patient has severe pain with obvious swelling, and is unable to walk without the help of crutches. Muscle contraction produces an obvious gap or bulge. This type of dead leg needs at least a month or two to completely heal. Treatment • tion).
R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Eleva-
• Rest is very important and the limb should be kept elevated as much as possible. •
Compression and ice therapy should
be applied for 15 to 20 minutes every hour for the first 24 to 48 hours. Ice should be wrapped in a wet towel to prevent ice burns. A compression bandage should be worn 24/7 to reduce swelling and to give support until the pain has subsided. •
Crutches should be used if required.
• Never apply heat therapy(that includes having a hot bath...Do not) or perform deep tissue massage in the initial acute stage (24 to 48 hours) of a dead leg injury. This can aggravate the injury or lead to myositis ossificans later. Sports massage to help recovery should be started once the acute phase (24 to 48 hours) of the injury has passed, provided it’s not an intramuscular contusion(This may need more time to settle and sometimes requires medical intervention). • Gentle stretching of the area should be done after the acute stage (24 to 48 hours) has passed, but not before, provided it does not cause too much pain. The stretch should be held for 30 seconds and should be repeated 4 to 5 times in a day. With severe (grade 3) intermuscular contusion there should be no overpressure with passive stretching for 7-10 days. When Can Exercises Be Started For Dead Leg? • For dead leg of grade 1 contusion of quadriceps, strengthening exercises can be started as soon as the pain has subsided. Patient should start with mild exercises and should move on to difficult ones as the dead leg pain. • For dead leg of grade 2 contusions of quadriceps, strengthening exercises should be started after a week or so. Patient should start with gentle warm up exercises and finish with good stretching exercises. Strengthening exercises should be continued for several weeks. Strengthening exercises should be started more than a week later and for grade 3 contusions of the quadriceps. • Gentle exercises such as cycling or swimming are nice gentle strengthening exercises to start with. Myositis Ossificans The more severe a contusion, the greater the risk of development of Myositis Ossificans, especially with poor treatment and management. In this condition calcification occurs within the healing hematoma(swelling of clotted blood within the muscle). The healing hematoma forms bone within the layers of affected muscle.

Symptoms include overnight and morning pain, as well as pain on muscle contraction. It may be possible to feel a hard bump or ‘woody’ lump within the affected muscle tissue. Stiffness and loss of knee range of movement are also common. Sometimes surgery is required to remove the calcified tissue.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra It is well documented that the colours around us affect our mood and wellbeing and this is also true of the natural colour of the food we eat. When fruit and vegetables share a particular colour they also share a unique set of nutrients which play a vital role in our fight against premature ageing and chronic disease. You can maximise your natural defenses by incorporating a variety of colour when preparing meals, not only will your food look more appealing, it will also provide real nourishment for a healthy body. The Chinese, in all their wisdom, suggest that we should have five colours on our plate in order to supply the body with what is needed for a long and healthy life - but for St. Patrick’s sake and to celebrate our national flag we can make great improvements to our diet by recreating the tricolour with green, white and gold!
Scoil Cheann Trá Tá clárú do Bunscoil Cheann Trá don scoil bliain 2016/2017 oscailte go dtí an Bealtaine 31ú 2016. Tá breis eolas ar fáil ó bPríomhoide ar 066-9159868. Green - (spinach, cabbage, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, leeks, chard, celery, peas, avocados etc) No other group of vegetables require as much bribery and convincing to be included on the plate than the greens! Youngsters, oldsters and inbetweeners could drastically reduce the risk of premature death from heart disease and many cancers by increasing intake of this remarkable group of foods. No need for forty shades either as just two servings daily is all it takes to feel the benefit! The green colour of this group of vegetables (and fruit) comes from the chlorophyll they contain. Research on the health benefits of chlorophyll has focused on the area of cancer and studies have found that the risk of certain cancers can be reduced by 55% through eating the equivalent of half a cup of raw spinach daily! Green vegetables are detoxifying, supporting the liver and helping the body to rid itself of dangerous toxins. They are also good sources of fibre, lutein, zeaxanthin, calcium, folate, vitamin C and betacarotenes. These nutrients are also required to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, to normalize digestion time, promote good gut flora, support eye health, fight free radicals and boost the immune system. White - this group of fruit and veg include garlic, ginger, bananas, cauliflower, kolrabi, potatoes, parsnips, oats, barley, mushrooms etc. These foods are high in beta-glucans which provides soluble fibre, the type of fibre that mops up excess cholesterol. Not only great for lowering cholesterol, beta-glucans help regulate blood sugar and boost immune activity. They activate natural killer cells and are most powerful against hormonal disorders and hormone-related cancers such as breast, prostate and ovarian. Not the most exciting to look at on their own so best to team them up with other colours. Gold (well, yellow and orange) - carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, red peppers, oranges, peaches, pumpkin, cantaloupe, turmeric etc. Many of these foods are the first foods we ever taste. Perfect for weaning babies because of their sweetness, the most important nutrient in common to the orange group is betacarotene. Betacarotene converts to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant and the most effective anti-ageing nutrient in nature. This nutrient can improve vision, reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and it may help relieve and improve skin disorders, such as psoriasis and eczema. One of the ways vitamin A protects us is by maintaining the linings of our organs - lungs, intestines, urinary tract, making it difficult for bacteria and viruses to infiltrate and make us sick. Further benefits of yellow and orange foods are their anti-ageing properties due to zeaxanthin and lutein, lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin K. Together with betacarotene, these nutrients fight free radical damage, reducing our risk of premature ageing of all organs such as skin, heart, brain, making them most effective against heart disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia and cancers of the lungs, skin and colon. Nature’s use of colour is a clever way to make the healthiest foods on the planet the most attractive to look at. However, much of the visual pleasure of food has lost out to processing and fast food, which typically lack colour leaving us with a dull, beige plate of food that rob us of vital nutrients. Get in touch with your creative side when preparing meals. It’s a great way to encourage children to eat a broader range of fruits and vegetables and to keep you looking and feeling the picture of health! Keel GAA Club Lotto There was no winner of the lotto draw worth €6,700 held in Foleys Bar on Sunday 13th March. Numbers drawn were 6, 10, 20 and 22. €50 winner was Ann Kane, Gortanedin. €25 winners were Eden Kane, Gortanedin, Abbie Hilliard, Shanahill, Helen Cronin, Castlemaine and Paul Bonner, Farnes. Next weeks lotto is worth €6,800 and the draw will take place in Grifins Bar on Sunday 20th March Mid Kerry League Keel traveled to Killorglin to play Laune Rangers today and the fast tempo of this drawn game will benefit both sides before the opening round of the County League next week. Keel opened the scoring with points from Aaron Murphy and Thomas Ladden. LR responded well to go 3-2 up but Keel kicked the next 3 points through Martin Burke and Gary Sayers 2 to take control of the game, Further points from Shane Prendiville, Murphy and Sayers had it LR 0-7 Keel 0-8 at half time. Donal O’Neill extended Keel’s lead to 2 after the break. LR started to come back into the game and in a ten minute spell turned the match with 3points to lead by 1. In this time Keel lost Aaron Murphy to a head injury and had no available subs so they played the remainder of the match with 14 men. Keel showed great resolve to retake the lead with 10 minutes of normal time remaining through Sayers and Ladden. Colm O’Shea kicked a fine equalizer on the 60 minute mark but there was lots of injury time due to the injury to Murphy. On 60+7 minutes LR looked to have stolen the win with a massive free from 50 metres by John O’Shea but Keel worked the ball up the field and won a free kick which Gary Sayers coolly converted on 60 + 9 minutes to leave the final score LR 0-12 Keel 0-12. We wish Aaron Murphy a speedy recovery and hopefully he will be fit for Keel’s opening County League game against Dromid on Sunday 20th March at 2pm in Keel. Keel: Stephen Cahillane, Donal O’Neill(0-1), Emmet Ashe, David McAssey, Dylan Prendergast, Martin Burke(0-1), Luke Flynn, Thomas Ladden(0-2), Aaron Murphy(0-2 1f), Aaron Cahillane, Terry O’Sullivan, Shane Prendiville(0-1), Gavin Evans, Gary Sayers(0-5 1f), Tommy Buckley Minor County League Keel/Listry minors lost to Knock/Brosna by 3-6 to 2-14 in Listry last Saturday. From Glasgow's Fair City. Bert McCann A recent documentary programme broadcast by BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic television service threw up a telling remark that illustrates the close connection between Ireland and Scotland. The film dealt with the relationship between Donegal and Glasgow and one interviewee, a native of the north-west county declared, ''Donegal people do not instinctively identify Dublin as our capital city. Rather we see Glasgow as fulfilling that role for us.' This expression of relative closeness could also be applied Sligo, Monaghan, Mayo, Belfast and Derry. Indeed until the 1960's there were three return sailings weekly from all of the northern ports to Glasgow for those seeking work and a more secure life than that offered at home. Often the early migrants spread across the host country as they followed the harvests from west to east coast. Indeed Scotland has been a place of sanctuary for Irish people since the expansion of the kingdom of Dalriada into Scotland from Antrim, in the fourth century AD. Those arrivals from Ulster also brough the Irish language with them where it took root on the west coast of Alba. It is also reckoned that in the times of famine proportionally more folk migrated to our nearest neighbour than went to America. Given those ties it is hardly surprising that the Irish community in Scotland would want to engage in the events of Easter 1916.
start of the Rising. They were based at Joseph Plunkett's house in Kimmage and distributed around the city's garrisons. Sadly, one of the Scottish Brigade, Charles Carrigan, was cut down in a hail of bullets with The O'Rahilly by his side, during the second evacuation of the GPO on the 28th of April. That loss did not halt the growth of Irish republicanism in Scotland though. By 1921 the Scottish Brigade of the IRA had 2,500 men organised in 5 battalions and 33 companies. There were 14 branches of Cumann na mBan and 66 Sinn Fein cumann were scattered throughout the country. In this centenary year it is evident that the role of woman in the Rising is being publicly discussed and acknowledged. Margaret Skinnider a native of Coatbridge, a predominantly Catholic west of Scotland town is at last being recognised. A teacher and a member of Cumann na mBan and Connolly's Irish Citizen Army she was a suffragist and a campaigner for social justice. In 1915 she joined the Glasgow Rifle Club which ironically had set up a sharpshooting class to teach woman to defend Scotland as part of the first world war effort. The putative sniper went to Dublin at Christmas 1915 at the invitation of Constance Markievicz. On this trip by boat she carried detonators for bombs in her hat and wires wrapped around her body under her coat. Connolly came to trust her at that time as she scouted Beggar's Bush barracks for him and was able to give him a map of the building.
Having been absorbed into the struggle she returned on Holy Thursday 1916. Initially she was assigned to be a despatch rider to Michael Mallin Oficer Commanding at St. Stephen's Green. Mallin Margaret Skinnider wasn't happy that women were taking risks, but was roundly told off by Margaret who told him that the new constituThe role of James Connolly, a native of Edinburgh and the child of tion gave her equal rights. Given that many of the donors were poorly paid mineworkers, much for the new constitution! domestic servants and labourers it was a major achievement. In the years leading to 1916 several republican organisations were active in Scotland, particularly in Glasgow and the west. Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Volunteers were in the roll-call. However the most active was Na Fianna which was a seedbed for many future leaders. Set up in 1910 the Glasgow sluagh was comprised of a particularly energetic and imaginative bunch who counted an adeptness for sabotage and burglary amongst their skills. Members got information and keys from Irish Volunteers who worked in mines, shipyards and munitions factories which were regularly plundered. Some members of An Fianna were engaged in British Admiralty war work on Clydeside and their sabotage efforts ensured that some submarines never came up after their first trial. Two of An Fianna members who were active around ordnance smuggling were Seamus and Alex Reader great-uncles of Scottish singer Eddi Reader formerly of Fairground Attraction who is currently writing a book about their involvement. In his later years Seamus recalled a trip to Belfast on the Scottish ferry on the 1st of January 1916 with two other members of An Fianna. They had in their possession 150 rounds of .303 and 200 rounds of assorted revolver ammunition, eight short .45 and eight .32 revolvers, 40 feet of fuse, 200 detonators and one stone of explosives. A further raid this time on a colliery magazine near Glasgow on the 15th of January secured a large quantity of high explosives which was also taken straight across to Dublin via Belfast. Seamus Reader also was able to get access to the chemical laboratories at Glasgow University, a redoubt of unionism, where he manufactured more explosives. Roast Shoulder of Lamb with Lemon and Garlic Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School The tradition of having lamb during the Easter period dates back to pre-biblical times. Throughout Europe it also marks the new season for lamb, however the fantastic hill lamb that we have available to us on the peninsula is as it’s best later in the year. That is still no reason not to have lamb for Easter especially from our local butchers; hill lamb is without doubt one of the finest foods available in Ireland. The distinctive flavour of this lamb is due to their diet of wild herbs, grass, hill flowers and heathers all of which will have a subtle sea-salt taste due to the proximity to the sea and sea-air. This recipe will provide you with a great dish for the centre of the table for an Easter feast. I have used shoulder of lamb for this recipe, which is such a great cut of meat and is perfect for slow cooking. It is best to order the shoulder ahead of time and ask the butcher to have it boned. The addition of lemon, garlic and herbs is very Mediterranean; they give this dish such a beautiful flavour and aroma. Ingredients 1 whole shoulder of lamb, boned 2 lemons zested and juiced 6-7 cloves of garlic minced or chopped finely Bunch of rosemary chopped finely Bunch of oregano chopped finely Salt and Pepper Rapeseed Oil

Method for Mint Sauce Strip off the mint leaves, sprinkle with salt and chop finely. Place into a jug, add the sugar and pour over the boiling water, stir and leave to cool. Stir in the vinegar and taste. (Use blender to make sauce) Add more water or vinegar and adjust seasoning to suit your taste Method for cooking the lamb shoulder Preheat the oven to 160ºC. Score the lamb with a sharp knife. In a bowl, mix the lemon juice, garlic, chopped herbs, salt and pepper. Rub all of this mixture generously all over the lamb getting into all the scores. Place this on a large tray and cover well with foil. Place it in the oven and cook for about two and a half hours. Remove the foil and continue to cook allowing the lamb to brown for a further 40 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from the oven once the meat is 52 West Kerry Live

Úllórd nua sa Daingean Community Fruit and Nut Orchard planting
to benefit Cloghane National School Easter Sunday after 10am Mass Siopa an Phobail
at Dingle Community Hospital Residents, staff and local volunteers will help plant a community fruit and nut orchard at Dingle Community Hospital on Monday 21st March. 18 trees will be planted, including Heritage Apple Varieties from the Irish Seed Savers Association in Clare as well as pear, plum, damson, quince, hazelnut and walnut. The project was developed by Transition Kerry who, through the Local Agenda 21 Fund, are supporting the planting of three community orchards in Kerry this March – in Tralee Town Park and in Listowel as well as in Dingle. Locally, the project is co-ordinated by Transition Corca Dhuibhne and Dingle Community Hospital. The aim of the project is to promote the planting of fruit and nut trees in public spaces and to encourage people to plant them in their own home gardens, school grounds, community and green spaces and at places of work. It also aims to highlight issues such as food miles, where our food comes from, food security and how climate change is affecting how we grow food and it’s impact on biodiversity. The planting is a free event at 2pm on Monday March 21st. All are welcome. Tá fáilte roimh gach duine. For more Information contact Niamh (Transition Kerry) @ 086 7247066 or Rachel (Transition Corca Dhuibhne) @ 086 1276551

Ná chuir an dea-aimsir crot eile ar an saol. Tá súil againn nách lá idir dhá shíon é. Ar an nDomhnach agus mé ag féachaint amach trí fhuinneog bhí glaise le feiscint sa páirceanna. Bhí gamhna óga agus uain óga ag caitheamh a gcos san aer, bhí daoine ag siúl go triopalach gan aon chasóig mhór ar éinne acu. Bhí an ghrian ag taithneamh agus bhuaidh Ciarraí ar Mhaig Eó agus Roscommán ar Thír Chonaill. Ní rabhas ‘gen bhfuinneoig i gcás na caide. Tá árd chluichí dian díograsach feicithe againn i gcaid agus in iomáint le seachtainí beaga cuid acu imeartha le linn stoirme. ‘Sé aiséirí Roscommáin is mó a chuireann daoine ag smaoineamh agus tá a gciall tagtha do imreoirí caide Chorcaí. Mheasfá do ndéanfaidh sí an- bhliain caide agus iomána i bhfianaise an tús maith atá feicithe againn. Is léir go bhfuil níos mó na grian ag cur misnigh orainn.

Bhí an tSiúir Baiste agus naionúr eile siúracha i láthair agus é le feiscint go leanann an sár thraidisiún oideachais fós sa Choláiste atá anois fé stiúir Cháirde Choláiste Íde ó 2014. Le cur leis an ócáid bhí an tEaspog de Brún Easpog Chiarraí, ann le Aifreann a cheiliúradh. Ar a lámh dheas bhí an fear groi Mícheál ó Muircheartaigh an laoch ó Dhún Sian a chuireann slacht ar aon ní go mbíonn baint aige leis. ‘Sé Mícheál Cathaoirleach an Choiste bainistíochta. Bhí Máirín uí Chonchúir Bainisteóir an choláiste, go bhfuil mór éacht déanta aici ó tháinigh sí ar bord, an- shásta leis an lá agus lán do áthas go raibh na siúracha, an tEaspog agus iarscoláirí ar an bhfód don ócáid. Nochtadh plaic in onóir na siúracha. Is mé im bhuachaill óg is mó uair a bhíos agus foireann bhuacaillí Scoil na mBráthar ‘thiar’ sa choláiste ag díospóireachtaí na scol. Chaitheas measaim cúig bliana i ndiaidh a chéile ar an bhfoireann sinsir díospóireachta fé stiúiro an mhúinteora Risteárd Ó Suilleabháin, fear foighneach díograsach. Ar dtúis más go Coláiste Íde nó go Meanscoil na gCailíní a bheimís ag dul, bheadh leath lá fén dtor againn, té agus gach saghas mílseóg. Is minic a bhímair thar contae amach ag cur asainn. Gan amhras chuirimís aithne ar cuid dos na cailíní agus b’é sin barr ar fad. Dála an scéil ‘sé Coláiste Íde an t-aon Mheanscoil lán Ghaelach do chailíní sa Stát.

Coláiste Íde Bhí árd lá an tseactain seo caite i gColáiste Íde. Bí sin Helena Ní Rócháin, iníon do Liam ó Rócháin ón gCurrán agus Nóirín Ní Ghairbhia ón Riasc. 1916, Seachtar Dearmadta
2015
le Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh foilsithe ag Coiscéim ‘Luan Cásca 1916, fógraíodh Éire ina poblacht neamhspleách ag Ardoifig an Phoist i mBaile Átha Cliath. B’eol don seachtar a chuir ainm le forógra na poblachta sin gur dhócha go gcuirfí chun báis iad mura n-éireodh leo. Sin mar a tharla, agus maireann a gclú dá thoradh. Ach bhí seachtar eile a cuireadh chun báis i bPríosún Chill Mhaighneann de bharr páirt a ghlacadh san éirí amach, agus níl an aithne chéanna orthu: Seán Heuston, Willie Pearse, Ned Daly, Michael Mallin, Mícheál Ó hAnnracháin, John MacBride agus Con Colbert. Cérbh iad féin? Cén chaoi ar tháinig siad isteach i ngluaiseacht na saoirse? Céard a rinne siad seachtain na Cásca? Cén fáth ar chuir na húdaráis chun báis iad?
WEDNESDAY 13th April 11th May
Freagraítear na ceisteanna sin agus tuilleadh sa leabhar seo, a thugann cuntas ar bheatha spéisiúil gach duine den seachtar dearmadta seo, chomh maith lena gcion i scéal 1916 agus ar bhain leis.’ Foilsíodh é in éineacht leis an tsraith teilifíse 1916: Seachtar Dearmadta, agus maisítear é le híomhánna ón tsraith. - Coiscéim

If your application is approved, the HSE will issue a form called S2 (also known as E112). This authorises treatment abroad so that you do not have to make any payment to the healthcare provider. The treatment you have abroad must be in public healthcare under a registered medical practitioner in a recognised hospital or other institution that accepts the form S2. If you don’t have the S2 at your appointment, you may be

If you are a public healthcare patient and need treatment that is not available to you in Ireland, you may be able to use the Treatment Abroad Scheme to get the treatment in another country in the EEA or Switzerland. The Scheme may provide help with travel costs for the patient and a travelling companion, where appropriate. You must be referred for treatment abroad by an Irish-based consultant who is treating you as a public patient. You cannot refer yourself or be referred by a GP. You, and your referring consultant, must complete an application form and include a copy of your referral letter. Your application must be approved by the Health Service Executive (HSE) before you travel or start treatment abroad. You will get a decision on your application by letter, usually within 15 to 20 working days. If your ap-
