Dingle Historical Society presents two lectures

A Hundred Years of the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ in the National Geographic magazine An illustrated lecture by Patrick Duffy, Emeritus Professor of Geography in Maynooth University Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle. Thursday, 25th August 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome The lecture will look at National Geographic photographs of Ireland through the past century. The west and south-west of Ireland and the Aran Islands especially were depicted as exotic, uncrowded, and timeless landscapes of sublime scenery, ancient monuments and charming people. By the 1960s, there were contradictions between these images of Ireland and the developing official state projection of a modern progressive society. Even during the brash economic boom into the 21st century, the National Geographic frequently reached back to its earlier lyrical imagery of a laid-back, misty isle, in many ways foreshadowing the recent emergence of the Wild Atlantic Way as a tourism concept. Patrick Duffy is Emeritus Professor of Geography in Maynooth University where he taught historical geography and landscape studies. He is author of Exploring The History and Heritage of Irish Landscapes, (Four Courts Press, 2007) and numerous book chapters such as: ‘Through American Eyes: a hundred years of Ireland in the National Geographic Magazine', in Spacing Ireland; ‘Wiring the Countryside: Rural Electrification in Ireland', in Engineering Earth; ‘Ordnance Survey Maps and Official Reports' in Oxford History of the Irish Book, Vol 4 (1800-90), Oxford University Press 2011.

Dingle in the 18th Century Munster Economy A lecture by Professor David Dickson, Professor of Modern History, TCD

Seascapes Seascapes

Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle. Thursday, 1st Sept, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome The century of the penal laws was a time of profound economic change across Munster, with population growth and the expansion of overseas trade redefining social relationships in town and countryside. How did the people of Dingle fare in this era: were they sheltered from it all by their distance from the great centres of commerce and sustained by a black economy of smuggling, or did they actively participate in the new economy and cross new horizons? David Dickson is a longstanding member of the Dept. of History in Trinity College Dublin, and is currently Professor of Modern History. He has published widely on Irish economic and social history, and his two most recent monographs were Old world colony: Cork and south Munster 1630-1830 (2005), and Dublin: The making of a capital city (2014). Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 23rd August the feature at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema will be the American drama “Demolition”. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Davis Mitchell , a successful investment banker who struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep, Karen Mareno (Naomi Watts) and amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. The following week on Tuesday 30th August the feature will be the French crime drama “ Dheepan”. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, the new film from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) is a gripping, human tale of survival. On the losing side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier poses as the husband and father of two other refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving in France, the makeshift “family” sets about establishing a new life-only to find themselves once again embroiled in violence on the mean streets of Paris. 4 West Kerry Live

Cod with Tomato and Caper Salsa

½ lemon, zested sea salt and black pepper rapeseed oil

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Method

Cod is one of those fish that we all seem to like. Maybe it is because of its beautiful white flesh or maybe it is just the mild sweet flavour that we love. Cod itself is a lazy enough fish as it spends most of its time in large shoals waiting for food to pass by. This is one of the main reasons that it has been heavily fished since the time of the Vikings and then later by the Basque fishermen throughout the Northern Atlantic. If you can’t get a nice fresh piece of cod look for its local cousins, pollack or hake.

For The Salsa Make the salsa about an hour before you need to use it to allow the flavours to develop. In a bowl mix the tomatoes, capers, garlic, parsley and lemon zest together. Season well with salt and pepper then add in a dash of rapeseed oil. Leave this aside for about an hour.

180g Cod per portion

for the fish Season the fish well with some sea salt just before cooking. Heat a non-stick pan to a medium-high heat. Add a dash of oil to the pan and lay the fish carefully skin side down. There should be a nice sizzle from the pan. You can add a few pieces at one time but remember not to overcrowd the pan. Allow this to cook for a few minutes until it has cooked half way up the fish (you will see the colour of the fish changing as it cooks). Once it has reached half way turn down the heat and turn the fish over. Allow the fish to cook on this side for another 2-3 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish. Turn off the heat and add a dash of lemon juice. Allow this to rest for about 3 minutes. Once you are ready to serve place the cod in the centre of the plate spoon some of the salsa around it.

dash of lemon juice

Enjoy!!!

I love when I cook fish to add a simple sauce or dressing to it, making sure that the dominant flavour is the fish itself and whatever is paired with it will merely compliment it. In case you were wondering; the word Salsa might make you sound more sophisticated but in fact it just means sauce in Spanish or Italian. Ingredients For the cod

sea salt and black pepper rapeseed oil For The Salsa 2-3 plum ripe plum tomatoes, seeded and diced 50g capers, rinsed and chopped ½ clove of garlic, finely sliced bunch of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Dept. Announces Interim Nitrogen & Phosphorus Statements The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine are now notifying farmers in respect of their Nitrogen and Phosphorus limits. This is being done by text message and will cover the first six months of the year. Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements for the period 1 January to 30 June 2016 are now available for all farmers online by registering on www.agfood.ie. These N&P statements are a valuable tool, especially for the more intensive farmers, and should assist them in deciding whether or not they need to change their farming practices before the end of the year to stay within the limits set down in the Nitrates Regulations. Farmers not already registered can do for agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the ‘Register’ button. To register a mobile phone number for future SMS text alerts log on to https:// www.agriculture.gov.ie/mobileupdates/ to access the sign-on form, or alternatively contact the regional office. If a herdowner does not have access to online or SMS text alert notification services, the interim N&P statements can be obtained from the regional office or from the Department’s Nitrates Section, Johnstown Castle, Wexford. Making A Will Farmers more than most need to make a will as on death, they leave a large amount of assets, that need to be divvied out to those who they are intended for. These include land, property including sheds and hous(es), entitlement, stock, machinery, entitlements, cash, investments &shares, and other properties. Making your Will is a quite a significant legal task to undertake. This legal document sets out how you wish your assets to be shared out on your death. It is a document that is often thought of too lightly, the comment “anybody can write a will” comes to mind, but if completed incorrectly can have dire consequences for those left behind. When you die your affairs need to be settled up. There are likely to be bills that need to be paid and property to be distributed. A Will is the simple mechanism that allows you to decide what happens to your assets with a minimum fuss and delay. But if you don’t make a will then you have no say where your assets go after your death. This uncompleted task then becomes the “decision”. If you die without making a Will then what happens your assets will be determined by law (Intestate). To Make A Will You Must: •

be aged 18 or over (or be - or have been - married)

• act of his own free will and be of sound mind, memory and understanding •

the testator must know the nature and extent of his/her property and

be capable of recalling all of the people who may expect to benefit from his/her estate

the will must be in writing

the document must be signed at the end by the testator (or by someone in his presence and by his direction)

the signature must be written or acknowledged in the presence of two witnesses, both present at the same time and

The witnesses must sign in the presence of the testator, but not necessarily in each other’s presence.

A witness or his/her spouse cannot benefit under the will

the attestation clause or testimonial

Fair Deal Nursing Home Scheme None of us are getting younger, unfortunately and with an ever-growing population and farming becoming a more and more one-man operation, it is necessary to examine care options for the elderly, that allows them to be looked after, and their successors to continue to work, as “Life Must Go On” The Nursing Homes Support Scheme is a scheme of financial support for people who need long-term nursing home care. Under the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, you will make a contribution towards the cost of your care and the State will pay the balance. This applies whether the nursing home is public, private or voluntary. The HSE administers the Fair Deal Scheme within the resources available and in line with the Nursing Home Support Scheme legislation. Applicants cannot avail of State funding for a nursing home place prior to receiving approval of their Fair Deal application. Under the Nursing Home Support Scheme, prices charged by Private Nursing Homes are agreed between the Private Nursing Home and the National Treatment Purchase Fund. A weekly price for the cost of care in Public Homes is also provided Income and assets: Income includes any earnings, pension income, social welfare benefits/ allowances, rental income, income from holding an office or directorship, income from fees, commissions, dividends or interest, or any income which you have deprived yourself of in the 5 years leading up to your application. Broadly speaking, an asset is any material property or wealth, including property or wealth outside of the State. If you are a member of a couple, the assessment will be based on half of the couple’s combined income and assets. For example, if a couple’s income was €600 per week, the assessment of the person needing care would be based on 50% of €600, or €300. In other words, the person needing care would be considered to have a total income of €300 per week. A couple is defined as (a) a married couple who are living together or (b) a heterosexual or same sex couple who are cohabiting as life partners for at least three years. The assessment will not take into account the income of other relatives such as your children. Your Contribution to Care Having looked at your income and assets, the Financial Assessment will work out your contribution to care. You will contribute 80% of your assessable income and 7.5% of the value of any assets per annum (5% of assets if the application was made prior to the 25th July 2013). However, the first €36,000 of your assets, or €72,000 for a couple, will not be counted at all in the financial assessment. Where your assets include land and property in the State, the 7.5% contribution based on such assets may be deferred and collected from your estate. This is an optional Nursing Home Loan element of the scheme which is legally referred to as “Ancillary State Support”. Your principal residence will only be included in the financial assessment for the first 3 years of your time in care. This is known as the 22.5% or ‘three year’ cap (15% if application was made prior to the 25th July 2013). It means that you will pay a 7.5% contribution based on your principal residence for a maximum of three years regardless of the time you spend in nursing home care. After 3 years, even if you are still getting long-term nursing home care, you will not pay any further contribution based on the principal residence. This ‘three year’ cap applies regardless of whether you choose to opt for the loan or not. All other assets will be taken into account for as long as you are in care. There are important safeguards built in to the Financial Assessment which are worth noting.

A Will Should Contain

Nobody will pay more than the actual cost of care

• If you have a spouse/partner remaining at home, he/she will be left with 50% of the couple’s income or the maximum rate of the State Pension (non-Contributory), whichever is the greater If both members of a couple enter nursing home care, they each retain at least 20% of their income, or 20% of the maximum rate of the State Pension (Non-Contributory), whichever is the greater.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Sunday, August 24. Took the kids for a cycle through Dingle to see the ogham stones at Coláiste Íde and home again by noon. Later watched Kerry beat Meath in the All-Ireland semi-final by 2-13 to 0-12.

By Ted Creedon

Monday, August 25.

Monday, August 11, 1986. Ordered 1,000ltrs of home heating oil from Kellihers of Tralee. It will cost around £150 which is about half of what it cost two years ago. Slattery’s Travel in Tralee have two buses going to London every day - the return fare is £61 which is reasonable.

A very wild night with gale force winds increasing to force 10 during the day and horizontal rain! There was a brief lull around noon and we must have been in the eye of the storm because it returned to violent conditions in the early afternoon. The weathermen said we’re getting the tail end of Hurricane Charlie which

Tuesday, August 12.

came from the Caribbean. We lit a fire in the main sitting-room after tea - unheard of in August!

Am heading to London but hate flying so booked my passage to London with Maurice O’Connor at Galvins Travel on John Street. Will depart from Tralee at 2pm on Sept. 1st.

The Rose of Tralee must be a wash-out.

We all went to see the Siamsa Show at the CBS in Dingle tonight and really enjoyed it.

Tuesday, August 26. Another wild night but worse in the East, according to radio reports this morning. There’s serious flooding in Dublin, bridges washed away, trees down and roads closed.

Thursday, August 14. Twenty years ago today I was on a ship, the Shell oil tanker Helcion in Da-nang harbour in Viet-nam during the war. We were carrying aviation spirits from Singapore for the American base there. Anyway, after lunch I decided to go for a swim in the harbour. Went down the gangway to a small pontoon, dived in and swam around for 15 minutes and out again. Back on the maindeck I heard a noise and looked down to see a huge shark bumping against the pontoon. Yikes!

Friday, August 15. There’s a rumour that the Dunfey family, who own a number of hotels in America, may be buying the Skellig Hotel. After breakfast we all headed off to Bantry - a good dry and bright day. Had to make a detour beyond Kenmare as last week’s floods had washed away part of the main road.

In fact, the litany of damage was the longest we’ve ever heard on the radio but then we expect Dublin to give big coverage to its own troubles while ignoring us country folk.

Sunday, August 31. Tim Collins collected me after lunch and we drove to Blennerville for the first stop in the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society outing. John Griffin of Tralee UDC gave us a talk on the restoration of the old windmill. The building is almost finished and the sails have yet to be fitted. From there we moved to Killelton where Walter McGrath outlined the background to the oratory and he also spoke at Camp viaduct about the train crash there on Whit Monday, 1893. Tom Francis told us of the sinking of the ship Port Yorrick in Brandon Bay in 1894. Home by 6.45pm.

Glengariffe was like a ghost town, probably because no buses were allowed on the detour road. Arrived in Bantry around noon. The town was choked with traffic and tourists and appears to be thriving.

Saturday, August 16. Ron Wright told me that there won’t be any seine boat races at Dingle regatta tomorrow and that we may have only three crews for the main men’s race.

Sunday, August 17. A fine day with good sunny spells and light northerly breeze. Went to town after lunch for the regatta and the first race got underway at 2.45pm. Charlie Haughey started the event from a launch. I was doing the commentary from Jimmy Flannery’s launch. The Dún Síon crew won the sprint for the third successive year. In the main women’s race the Ventry and Dingle crews were well ahead of the Maharees and Ballydavid women but clashed at the last buoy and were entangled long enough to allow Maharees take the lead and win. Dee Counihan won the women’s single race while Paudo O’Connor took the men’s. Charlie Haughey presented the trophies to the winners and presented kisses to all the women!

Thursday, August 21. The Leaving Cert results are out today with very good results for some of the neighbours’ children. The Kerryman newspaper has no report on the Dingle regatta. Most of the ‘news’ is focused on next week’s Rose of Tralee festival. Nuclear experts are predicting that thousands of people in Europe will die of cancer over the next 70 years as a result of the Chernobyl disaster last May. 14 West Kerry Live

Is féidir an Ghlúineach Bhiorach a smachtú má chuireann duine inniúil na luibhicídí cearta léi. Tá gá le pleanáil áfach chun í a dhíothú toisc go mbíonn gá le breis aire ina dhiaidh. Japanese Knotweed is one of the most problematic invasive species. It is to be seen on waste ground, the edges of roads and along the hedgerows where it dominates the native species and forms dense thickets. It is widely distributed in Corca Dhuibhne. If you do find Japanese Knot-weed on your property, the most important thing you can do is to prevent any further spread of the species. Do not strim, cut, flail or chip the plants. Tiny fragments can regenerate new plants and make the problem bigger. It is advised not to dig, move or dump soil which may contain plant ma-terial as this will spread it further. Japanese Knotweed can be controlled through the application of appropriate herbicides by a com-petent person. It is also necessary to consider managing and disposing of dead plant material and the treatment of contaminated soils. The best time to carry out the work is from August to Sep-tember while the plant is in flower but before the plant dies off for the winter.

Ionad an Bhlascaoid, Monday, 22 August at 7.00 p.m. The results of an Ecological Survey of the parish will be presented and experts will give information and advice on the best strategy and practice We strongly encourage all householders in Dún Chaoin to attend this session because Japanese Knotweed is becoming firmly established in the parish and it is putting structures and other plants in danger Tá an Ghlúineach Bhiorach ar cheann de na speicis choimhthíocha ionracha is mó trioblóide. Boxing Not So Clever Tadhg Evans “Yeah, AIBA are cheats. They’re f***ing cheats. That’s me. I’ll never box for AIBA again. They’re cheating b******s who are paying everybody. I don’t give a f*** if I’m cursing on TV. That here is the Olympic gold. My dreams have been shattered now. Do you know what? I’ve a big career ahead of me. And these ones? They’re known for being cheats and they’ll always be cheats. Amateur boxing stinks from the core right to the top” – Michael Conlan after ‘losing’ to Vladimir Nikitin. In today’s era of weak stomached eejits who pretend to be offended by content that’s even slightly salty, it’s striking that a foul-mouthed, pre-watershed interview carried by the national broadcaster hasn’t been met with pious condemnation. Anyone who knows anything about boxing knows that Michael Conlan won all three rounds of this bout. Anyone who knows nothing about boxing knows that Michael Conlan won all three rounds of this fight. Anyone who knows anything about body language knows that Vladimir Nikitin knows that Michael Conlan won all three rounds of this fight. Twitter users went from their customary mode of ‘outraged’ to ‘suitably outraged’ within seconds of the referee lifting Nikitin’s left hand: their unfavourable feedback was, for once, justified in scolding the most disreputable judges’ decision since Father Ted Crilly and Father Dougal Maguire’s My Lovely Horse won the right to represent Ireland at Eurovision. It’s not the first time amateur boxing’s left itself open to the suggestion that it’s as filthy as a neglected chicken coop. South Korea’s Park Si-Hun was the nail to Roy Jones Jr’s hammer in the light heavyweight division’s final at the 1988 games in Seoul, but after eight minutes of embarrassingly lopsided boxing, dumbstruck referee Aldo Leoni was forced by the judges to wrest the nail from the canvas so he could raise its arm. Several journalists quoted Moroccan judge Hiouad Larbi as saying, “The American won easily. So easily, in fact, that I was positive my four fellow judges would score the fight for the American by a wide margin. So I voted for the Korean to make the score only 4-1 for the American and not embarrass the host country.” You can kinda see why Park apologised to Jones after being gifted the American’s gold medal. In 1997, an IOC enquiry found that the dishon20 West Kerry Live

ourable decision had been made by judges whose wallets had been thickened with $300 on a daily basis by South Korean officials throughout the games’ 16 days. Suspiciously bad judging has been commonplace under the shadow of the Olympic rings since, but never have officials been as regularly brazen as they’ve been in Rio. Hours before the sure-to-be-infamous Conlan fight, Russian heavyweight Evgeny Tischenko was handed victory over the visibly superior Kazakhstani Vassiliy Levit. Finland’s Mira Potkonen may have been facing a dulled version of the once-peerless Katie Taylor on Monday, but she still lost – though the judges happily dealt an inaccurate card stating otherwise. On the eve of the games, The Guardian wrote that senior officials within amateur boxing had approached them, warning that some of the judges and referees at Rio would be corrupted, and what’s been seen since has done nothing to discredit the newspaper’s sources. The injustice inflicted upon Conlan is especially irksome given the loyalty he’s shown to the amateur game. It’s been pointed out by Limerick’s Andy Lee that 24-year-old Conlan, a World Champion pugilist whose elegance and inherent talent would be discernible even to eyes with no grá for boxing, could have turned professional after winning bronze in London four years ago, but decided to hold tough in the hope of gold: “He could be financially secure by now. It’s disgusting, it’s disgraceful and the worst part about it is that it’s all too familiar with amateur boxing and it’s been going on for years,””, the former WBO middleweight champion told Newstalk’s Off the Ball on Tuesday night. “Usually, you’d take it at a European Championships that are held in the back end of nowhere. But you always felt you’d get a fair shake at the Olympic Games because it’s too big of a stage. There’s too big of an audience. But it seems like they just don’t really care what people are thinking.” Conlan was justified in flipping his middle finger at the judges’ table after the bout – they’d just done the exact same to him, and their decision will test trainers’ knack for keeping fighters sufficiently motivated to keep pummelling punch bags. Roy Jones Jr. is not best remembered as the victim of a ludicrous piece of adjudication – by 1999 he was the World’s undisputed light heavyweight champion, and in 2003

www.westkerrylive.ie

he became the first middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title for over a century. Conlan’s future depends on twisting this sting out before too much toxin’s been pumped, but the zealous Belfast man has both the skill and sense to succeed.

Soccer Club Notes New season: The club returned to training this week as the new season is now only a few weeks away. We are delighted that John Daniels has agreed to remain at the helm as manager of the senior side and he will be aided by the addition of Danny Diggins who will oversee the training sessions. Danny brings a wealth of experience with him including winning the Kennedy cup as manager of the Kerry U15s in 2015, and several league & cup successes over the years so hopefully he can take us in the right direction. Player awards: At our annual player night last Saturday it was Mícheál O’Dowd that scooped the senior player of the year with his goal scoring tally in double figures for the past season, while the outstanding talent of Michael Scanlon took the U17s player of the year award. Well deserved by both and we look forward to them both combining in the coming season!

Heritage Week

Seachtain Oidhreachta Náisiúnta Isabel Bennett

of promoting and preserving our natural, built and cultural heritage, and community groups as well as organisations involved in heritage matters ensure all hands are on deck to organise a huge variety of events and activities. You can find out about what is being organised throughout the county on the website www.heritageweek.ie, and a booklet listing most of the activities is available in libraries, museums etc. This year there will be Free Entry to Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne on both Sundays, the 21 and 28 August, and I will be at the excavated monastic site at An Riasc, from 2.00 – 4.30 pm, on Tuesday 23, offering tours of the site, every half-hour. This is also a free event. The site was excavated in the 1970s, and some of the artefacts and cross-inscribed stones found there are now on exhibit in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, on loan from the National Museum of Ireland.

Tá Seachtain Oidhreachta Náisiúnta na hÉireann ag druidim linn arís! Tá sé á reáchtáil ag an gComhairle Oidhreachta ag deireadh mhí Lúnasa le tamall de bhlianta anuas anois chun deis a thabhairt do phobal na hÉireann a n-oidhreacht chultúir a cheiliúradh. Is féidir eolas a fháil ar na céadta imeachtaí a bheidh ar siúl ar fud na tíre ar an suíomh idirlín www.heritageweek.ie, agus ní bheidh aon easpa imeachtaí orainn anso i gCorca Dhuibhne ach an oiread. Beidh saorchead isteach go dtí Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh ar an nDomhnach an 21ú Lúnasa agus arís ar an nDomhnach an 28ú Lúnasa 2016. Chomh maith leis sin, beidh teacht ar Isabel Bennett, Coimeádaí an Mhúsaeim, ar an Mairt an 23ú Lúnasa, ag an mainistir ag an Riasc, agus déanfar turas ar an láthair gach leathuair a chloig idir 2.00 – 4.30 i.n. Is féidir an turas a bheith i nGaeilge nó i mBéarla (nó dátheangach, más gá). Braitheann sin ar an lucht éisteachta. Ní bheidh aon chostas air. Fáilte roimh chách! Once again Heritage Week is almost upon us, giving everyone an opportunity to engage with heritage-related activities, and visit sites, in many cases for free. The Heritage Council has been coordinating this week for many years now, with the aim 26 West Kerry Live

Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne is delighted to be hosting the bilingual exhibition, Athbheochan na Gaeilge agus 1916, which portrays the fall and rise of the Irish Language from the time of the Great Famine through to 1916. The exhibition is on loan from Oifig na Gaeilge, Comhairle Contae Chiarraí and will be on display in the museum for the entire week. Other free events taking place in Corca Dhuibhne include a talk entitled ‘A case of the bends—archaeological discoveries on the N86 Lispole to Ballynasare Lower Road Improvement Scheme’ by archaeologist Bruce Sutton on Tuesday 23 August at 8.00 pm at O’Sullivan’s Bar, Garraí na dTor, Lios Póil and a talk organised by the Dingle History Society entitled ‘A hundred years of the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ in the National Geographic magazine’ will be delivered by Patrick Duffy, Emeritus Professor of Geography in Maynooth University, on Thursday 25 August at 8.00 pm in Dingle Benners Hotel. Another illustrated talk of West Kerry interest, but taking place in Templenagriffin, Ardfert Cathedral, Ardfert, on Wednesday 24 August at 7.30 pm and delivered by myself, is entitled ‘St Brendan and the Dingle Peninsula’.

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Eyebright, Euphrasia officinalis Parts used; Flowering tops Family; Scrophulariaceae Eyebright is flowering at the moment and it is the flowering stems that are dried and used. It grows in sunny meadows and in my experience grows in open spaces on close cropped fields on the Dingle peninsula. The herb eyebright has pretty eye-like flowers a resemblance which, according to the doctrine of signatures indicates its affinity for the eyes. Traditionally the doctrine of signatures meant that any plant resembling parts of the human body indicated its affinity for that part of the body. This was a belief employed in folk medicine until the middle ages and though a methodology not employed by many herbalists today many of the supposed actions of these herbs hold true today. Eyebright is one of these and today based on empirical evidence is indeed a specific for the eyes. While the herb is best known for treating eye conditions it is also used for the upper respiratory system with its combination of antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Eyebright is the first herb that comes to mind for inflammation of the eyes and infection. The herb can be taken internally and in conjunction applied as a compress for conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Non-specific eye problems such as red eye, sty and itch can all be relieved using a compress. For a compress place 3 to 6 teaspoons of dried herb in half a litre of water, boil for ten minutes and let cool slightly. Moisten a cloth in the lukewarm water, wring out slightly and place over the eyes. Leave the compress in place for 15 minutes and repeat several times a day. So take a day on the couch and enjoy this soothing remedy. Eyebright is also prescribed for failing eyesight, eye strain and weakness of the eye. The herbs anti-allergenic properties make this herb appropriate for hay fever, rhinitis and sinus type conditions. It is a powerful anti-catarrhal and can be used to treat general congestive respiratory problems and a gargle can be used for sore throat and tonsillitis. Eyebright is a gentle yet effective remedy and whether or not one subscribes to the doctrine of signatures, many eminent herbalists have recorded their success with this herb for eye problems. Don’t however forget its use in upper respiratory problems and eye, nose and throat catarrhal conditions can all be treated with this herb. The herb’s mild sedative action makes this herb particularly suitable for children when their eyes and nose are streaming with a head cold and a tea infusion along with eye swabs to soothe this area would be helpful here. Preparations and dosage Tea infusion; cup of boiling water over one to two teaspoons of the dried herb, infuse for ten to fifteen minutes, strain and drink. Can be taken three times a day. One teaspoon per cup is adequate for younger children. Tincture dosage 1 to 4 ml three times a day External Compress, eye bath, eye swab. Safety Considerations; None Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, ‘Nature’s Knowledge’, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Developing Mindsight to Support Your Child to Understand Their Internal World Anne Healy

you were young, which of these did you feel more often?

Over the past few weeks I have written articles on what one of the leading neuroscientist in the world, Daniel Siegel, believes supports parents on enabling children to become confident, and joyful. In other words to thrive in the world secure in the knowledge that you love them for Photo - Anne Healy who they are. In his book ‘Parenting from the Inside Out’ he suggests that there are five important approaches to offer your child. These include mindfulness, response flexibility lifelong learning, mindsight, and joyful living’. This week I am going to talk about mindsight. I have discussed mindfulness, response flexibility, and joyful living. For those of you who may not have read them they are posted on my website which is www.mindfulparentingadvice.ie or on this magazines website.

b) I can’t seem to please my parents, no matter what I do;

a) No matter what I do, my parents love me;

The photograph I use above is one I took on hazy summer morning in Cluaismore in Dingle. I loved the still reflection which mirrored perfectly the boats shape and outline. It was a day that took its time before the sun showed its face. None the less in the hazy moody morning I had the joy of standing watching the hidden outline of Burnham across the bay waiting to reveal its beauty. On thinking of that morning it reminds me of what mindsight means. ‘Mindsight is the ability for us to see within ourselves, to dive deeply into the sea inside’( Daniel Siegel) It also includes how we reflect on and give attention to our own feelings and thoughts and to be able to be consider the world of someone else. So essentially it means having an understanding of our internal world and having empathy for others. To do this we need to reflect on the way we feel and explore our many layers including those feelings that are yet to reveal themselves. The way we develop mindsight is through our relationships with our parents. Siegel says that ‘Parents reflect to us what they see going on in our inner world, not just noticing our behaviour’s but, for example, reflecting to us about our feelings, what we might be thinking, remembering, perceiving.’ All of these are ways that parents help children make sense of that is happening in their inner world helps them to make sense of their many complex and difficult feelings. So like the moored boat reflecting itself you need to reflect to your child what he or she is feeling, thinking and perceiving until they develop the skills to do it for themselves. So as a means of explaining I will share a little story. A parent told me the way her five year old child will throw something when he does not get his own way. This mother said the way she responded to this was to focus on his behaviour telling him he was naughty and she would send him to his room. However this approach was not working. I asked her to consider what her son may be feeling and how she felt at these times. She was clear that she was frustrated and when she reflected on how her son felt she came up with the words “angry” and “disappointed” that he did not get his own way. Now the next time her son threw something she acknowledged the emotions that might have caused him to throw that object. She showed understanding, she named his feelings thus helping him make sense of what was going on in his inner world and also was aware of how she felt herself. She also placed limits on his behaviour explaining to him while it was okay to be angry nothing could get thrown or nobody gets hurt.

c) My parents don’t really notice me. He suggests that ‘the answers to such questions don’t just reveal truths about our childhood’ but that they also tend to predict how we act in our closest relationships as adults. Your response may be that no matter what you did your parents still loved you. However for many people their answer may be or b) or c). If this is the case take heart! If that experience is impacting you in anyway “research absolutely demonstrates that if you take the time to make sense of what happened to you, then you can free yourself up to develop your own sense of security inside of you, and also have children who have a secure attachment to you,” says Siegel. It’s a hopeful message: No matter what happened to us in childhood, we never stop growing. To conclude I recall being on training course many ….many years ago and the facilitator asked us ‘when was the last time you felt you were seen’? I was really stuck by the question and at the time I could not find an answer. Today what comes to mind was the morning of my holy communion. My mother was sick and was in bed so unusually my father was helping me get ready. As I put on my lovely white shoes the buckle broke, naturally I was beside myself. Instead of being short tempered with me which he could be my father mopped up my tears and with his big chunky fingers he fixed the buckle. He looked me in the eye and I knew he knew how I felt and I was no longer alone. So find the words or show your child and yourself compassion and empathy. Like the beauty that lay hidden by the haze captured in the photograph waiting to reveal Burnham across the bay you can be your child’s mirror until they can learn to know their hidden depths. Our hearts and minds remembers it for a long time and it shapes how we are going to be in life. One of my favourite authors Alistair MacLeod ends his great novel ‘No Great Mischief’ which contained themes of love and loss, pain and grief and above all the love and support that family offers with the line that ‘All of us are better when we’re loved.’ Good websites to check out for further information are http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_power_of_mindsight https://www.mindsightinstitute.com/mesa-177 or if you feel you could benefit from personal support speak to your GP to be referred to a counsellor. Anne Healy is a play therapist and parent adviser with over thirty years experience of working with children and families. 087 2486421 info@mindfulparentingadvice.ie www.mindfulparentingadvice.ie

In an article written by Daniel Goleman, Social Intelligence: The Power of Mindsight ( http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_power_of_mindsight) he suggests that when parents practice empathy toward a child, they help instil a sense of security and an ability to empathize with others later in life. He asks us to consider the following ‘when 32 West Kerry Live

I must compliment the volunteers of these annual events for their near professional organisational skills and huge dedication to promoting our town with such high standards which are always noted by participants and supporters alike. The ongoing support of the Haughey Family and friends for the Regatta shows how much our visitors have fallen in love with the area and proves that when we look after our visitors properly we are virtually guaranteed regular return visits which are so important to the local economy. The Town Park has been well used by people of all ages over the past few weeks and proves how lucky we are to have such a fine facility right in the middle of our town. However we need some further investment from Kerry County Council to upgrade the playground facilities and picnic tables and benches to keep a modern look in the peoples park.

Some of our retail outlets have, it seems, been effected very much this year by the traffic and parking problems as Dingle has become a victim of its own success especially during the summer months.Well for the Business Chamber to try and ensure some corrective action is taken before its too late it will need the support and ideas of all the business interests in town and the sooner the better!!!. The main tourist season is still very much with us and what an asset Fungi has been to the Peninsula. The Harbour area has been a hive of activity for many months now with so many different groups offering such a variety of active and recreational facilities and tours that whet the appetite of day trippers and longer stay holidaymakers alike. Still to come in the activities calendar are the Dingle Marathon and Tradfest on successive weekends in September and the Food Festival on the first weekend in October. I almost forgot that we will hopefully be welcoming “Sam” home in late September also.Details of ongoing events right around the Peninsula are available on other pages in this edition. Solar Systems Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to

Femoral Acetabular Impingement Eddie O’ Grady The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The socket is formed by the acetabulum, which is part of the large pelvis bone. The ball is the femoral head, which is the upper end of the femur (thighbone). Femoral acetabular impingement (FAI) describes a hip condition seen in various forms in about 20 % of the population(Ganz et al., 2003). There are three variants of this condition 1. ‘’Cam lesion’’ : here there is extra bone laid down near the head of the femur bone where it inserts into the hip join. As a result of the ‘’poor fit’’(impingement) there is more limited movement in the hip joint. 2. ‘’Pincer impingement’’ : here there is abnormal bone growth in the hip joint(acetabulum) causing the impingement and restricted movement. 3. a mixture of types 1. and 2. : This occurs in around 88% of people with FAI. It is unclear whether the development of FAI is due to over-activity at the epiphyseal plate between the femoral head and neck at the hip joint during periods of rapid growth in adolescents, caused by torsional forces at the hip, or whether it is due to genetic tendencies, or both. There is some evidence of genetic predisposition (Pollard et al. 2010). The condition (FAI) can result in hip pain when the joint is placed into a position of impingement repetitively during activity, in traumatic incidents such a car crashes, or during falls when the hip is in a position of impingement. Something worth noting for sports people is that the incidence of FAI in athletes with longstanding adductor-related groin pain has been reported as being as high as 94% (Weir et al. 2011). People with FAI usually have pain in the groin area, although the pain sometimes may be more toward the outside of the hip. Sharp stabbing pain may occur with turning, twisting, and squatting, but sometimes, it is just a dull ache. The commonest position producing the impingement in the hip is flexion with internal rotation and sometimes slight adduction of the femur (upper thigh), as most cam and pincer lesions are located on the superior anterior aspect of the hip. Putting the joint in this position can be used as a test for FAI, a positive result (pain or impingement) being an indicator that further investigation may be necessary ie. radiological examination, xray, MRI etc. Several studies have linked FAI to the possible development of other intra-articular hip pathologies such as labral tears, chondropathy and ultimately osteoarthritis of the hip(Pollard et al. 2010). Thus early identification of FAI in sportspeople with hip and groin pain is very important. Currently surgery is the best way to treat painful FAI. Most FAI problems can be treated with arthroscopic surgery using small incisions and thin instruments. A small camera, called an arthroscope, is used to view inside the hip. Correcting the impingement can prevent future damage to the hip joint and successfully reduce symptoms caused by the impingement. If treatment has been put off and the damage is severe, sometimes not all of the damage can be completely fixed by surgery . This increases the probability of osteoarthritis developing in the hip going forward.

The Kelly family from Glenbeigh who lost a child to sudden infant syndrome, organised a Mile in Memory walk in support of all families that have suffered this tragic experience. The walk took place at Rossbeigh Beach, where a good crowd of supporters turned up for the walk along the beach to the wreck of the old Sunbeam, where balloons were set free. Photo: David Rolt

Members and representatives of the victorious Dingle Team who won the 1971 Junior Championship at a reunion O'Flaherty's Bar last Sunday.

Keel GAA Colin Clifford County League Keel welcomed neighbours Annascaul to Ross Field for the penultimate round of the county league division 3. Both teams knew that the winners would have a great chance of promotion to division 2. Keel had an explosive start and after quarter of an hour led by five points to no score, three points from Gary Sayers and one each from Colm O’Neill and Aaron Murphy. Annascaul missed a number of frees in the opening minutes but when Jason Hickson got his eye in they dominated the second quarter with three from Hickson and one each from James Crean and Shane Foley to leave it 0-5 apiece at half time.

Keel: Stephen Cahillane, David McAssey(0-1), Emmet Ashe, James Foley, Colm O’Neill(0-1), Donal O.Neill, Aaron Cahillane, James Nagle, Gary Nagle, Martin Burke(0-1), Gary Sayer(0-3 2f), Eoin O’Neill, Barth Murphy(0-1), Aaron Murphy(1-2 2f), Luke Flynn. Subs used Thomas Ladden(0-2) Annascaul: Tommy Pierce, Ger Farelly, Eoin Curry, Gearoid O’Shea, Fintan Herlihy, Andrew Finn, David Clifford, Niall McKenna(0-1), Emmet Kennedy, Eamonn Hickson(1-0), Jason Hickson(0-3 2f), Shane Foley(0-1), Genie Farrell(0-1), James Crean(0-4 2f), Ger Lenihan. Subs used Alan Falvey(1-1). John Bowler Minor Central League Keel Listry lost to Castlegregory on a scoreline 0-10 to 4-10 in Listry last week. They play St Pats in Keel on Thursday 18th August at 7pm.

James Crean put the visitors in the lead for the first time at the beginning of the second half but a lovely goal by Aaron Murphy followed by a David McAssey point gave Keel a 1-6 to 0-6 point lead. James Crean, Niall McKenna and the evergreen Genie Farrell added points for Annascaul while Keel replied through Thomas Ladden and Martin Burke to keep a two point lead. In the forty seventh minute Annascaul cut through the home defence and sub Alan Falvey drove it under the onrushing Stephen Cahillane to score a goal and take a one point lead. Keel quickly recovered and regained the lead with points from Barth Murphy and Aaron Murphy. However with five minutes remaining Annascaul struck the killer blow. A Keel attack broke down and the visitors swept up the field at speed and Eamonn Hickson was on the end of the move to finish to the net. Annascaul crucially scored the next two points through Crean and Falvey to move four points clear. Ladden pointed for Keel but as time ran out they couldn’t fashion the goal chance they needed to get a draw. Final score Keel 1-11 Annascaul 2-11

Do We All Really Need A Multivitamin?

body is aided by a wide range of vitamins.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra A sure sign that Summer is waning is evident in the increasing advertising of multivitamins and mineral formulas in the media. While there does not seem to be overwhelming evidence to suggest that we are scraping the bottom of our vitamin stores by the end of Summer - there are some factors worth noting that may warrant a boost particularly between seasons. The argument for and against taking multivitamins is ongoing for over 30 years and has not really thrown much light either way on the matter. There are too many variables to study the efficacy of multivitamins in the general population leaving most studies inconclusive or unreliable. Formulations used in studies are not consistent and cannot represent the quality of all multivitamins on the market. The diet, lifestyle and health status of subjects involved are rarely taken into account before and during studies. Determining the success or failure of multivitamin use in a research study can only be established by the expected outcomes of that particular study set out at the onset and does not consider additional benefits or detriments that may arise. All that aside, when trying to figure out whether you need a multivitamin or not, the decision can be made easier by understanding the role and demand of vitamins and minerals in relation to your health and the supply and availability of these nutrients from the food you are eating.

The interaction between vitamins, minerals and our cells never ceases and maintains a steady demand for these nutrients. Modern living, stress and chronic illnesses place an even larger demand for vitamins and minerals that our nutritionally-poor diets are struggling to meet. All in all there are many good reasons to take a multivitamin and mineral formula but consideration of individual health and nutrition status and supplementing according to needs is required for maximum benefit. Vitamins are organic substances meaning they come from plants or animals. Vita - meaning life or living. Minerals, on the other hand, are inorganic substances that never lived and are found in the earth, soil or water. Both vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients required by the body for growth, development and maintenance of health throughout life. Essential nutrients are not made by the body and can only be acquired through diet. Deficiencies can occur when the diet does not provide an adequate supply of these nutrients and demands are not met or if there is a problem with absorbing and assimilating vitamins and minerals from the diet. Most of the vitamins and minerals we know today were identified and categorized in the early part of the 1900s. Although in 1747 a Scottish naval surgeon, James Lindin, noted that a nutrient in citrus fruits, now known as vitamin C, prevented scurvy it wasn’t until 1912 that vitamin C was classified and named by Norwegian scientists. Vitamin C was the first to be artificially synthesized in a laboratory in 1935. Since then, we are discovering more and more about the importance of vitamins and minerals and their individual properties and benefits to our health. The B complex of vitamins and vitamin C are water soluble vitamins. They dissolve in water and are not stored by the body. We need a continuous daily supply of these vitamins as they are easily destroyed during food storage, processing and cooking. The B vitamins act as co-enzymes in many body functions particularly the nervous system, immunity, red blood cell formation and energy production. They are found in a wide range of foods including whole grains, legumes, eggs, meat and fish. While diseases of deficiency such as Beri-beri are rare, evidence supports that modern diets fail to meet the increasing demand for this group of vitamins. Vitamin C, found in fresh fruit and vegetables is also needed for a wide range of functions. Vitamin C is needed for collagen formation - the glue that holds cells, bones and muscles together. Also needed for blood vessels, immunity, aiding absorption of iron and also acts as an antioxidant. Stress, illness, pollution, exercise, some medications, smoking and alcohol deplete B and C vitamins quickly and unless the diet provides enough B and C vitamins everyday, shortfalls will occur which impacts on many body functions. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble meaning they dissolve in fat before they are absorbed into the bloodstream to carry out their functions. This group of vitamins can be stored in the body and are not needed everyday in the diet to replenish stores. Vitamin D has hit the headlines in recent years as deficiencies are now known to be widespread. Supplementing vitamin D during the cooler months is strongly recommended for most age groups from babies to the elderly. Minerals are also stored in the body and each and every one of them have significant functions. They are absorbed from the soil and sea by the plants, animals and fish we eat. Their availability is dependent on the quality of soil and sea from which they come and their assimilation into the 42 West Kerry Live

Pádraig Ó Cíobháin foilsithe ag Coiscéim Seoladh an leabhar nua le Pádraig Ó Cíobháin, duine de mhór-údair Chorca Dhuibhne, i dTigh Áine, ar an nGráig Dé Céadaoin 17 Lúnasa. ‘Ba léir ón gcéad lá ... gur don nGaelainn amháin a ceapadh guth an Chíobhánaigh agus gurb í an teanga chéanna a laoch fé mar gurb í an teanga an laoch i litríocht na mionteangan i gcónaí. Dar ndóigh, is minic a bhíonn scríbhneoirí na mionteangan cráite ag an dteangain go gcaitheann siad a gcuid fuinnimh léithi, ach an léitheoir go bhfuil an ghearra-chuid, fiú, de shaothar Phádraig Uí Chíobháin léite aige, is léir dó nó di gur fé dhraíocht ag an dteangain atá an scríbhneoir seo seachas cráite aici; é fé dhraíocht ag a háilleacht, ag a cumhacht, ag a saibhreas, ag gach a bhfuil laistiar di ó thaobh staire, cultúir is litríochta, ag gach a mbíonn á iompar aici, ag na féidearthachtaí ar fad a bhaineas léi mar uirlis liteartha, agus é dílis go héag don gcanúint shaibhir a fuair sé le hoidhreacht óna shinsir agus óna chomharsain i nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne mar a bhfuil formhór mór na scéalta sa chnuasach nua so, De Chion Focal, suite.’ - Breandán Ó Cróinín

The National Flag Question What are the rules around using the national flag. Is it true that you can’t write on it? Answer The National Flag of Ireland is often referred to as the tricolour and consists of three colours – green, white and orange. It was adopted as the flag of the Irish Free State in 1922. It was formally confirmed as the National Flag in the 1937 Constitution: “The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange.” Article 7: Bunreacht na hÉireann. As part of the 1916 commemorations, the national flag was presented to every primary and post-primary school in the State. Along with the flag, schools received a copy of the 1916 Proclamation as Gaeilge and in English, and a booklet detailing the guidelines for respecting the flag. These guidelines are issued by the Department of the Taoiseach and give extensive information about when the flag can be flown and how it should be used. For example, no other flag or pennant should be flown above it when it is being flown in Ireland. Care must also be taken not to let the flag touch the ground or become entangled with trees. The flag should never be defaced by placing slogans, logos, lettering or pictures of any kind on it, for example, at sporting events and it should not be draped on cars, trains, boats or other modes of transport. It should not be carried flat, except when used to drape a coffin. The rules also say the national flag should be replaced if it has become worn or frayed, as it is no longer fit for display in a respectful manner. The same principles apply if the flag is reproduced in printed or electronic format. However, these guidelines are not statutory guidelines. In other words, there are no laws setting out the rules around use of the flag. This means that there are no penalties for anyone who does not follow the guidelines.
