Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The feature at the film club on Tuesday 9th February will be “The Revenant”. The film is inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass in 1823 Montana and South Dakota. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Glass and co-stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. Nominated for 12 Academy Awards the film has been lavished with praise for it’s stark beauty and uncomprimising treatment of it’s subject matter. The following week on Tuesday 16th February the feature will be “The Danish Girl”. A fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery and his performance provides another sterling example of just how deeply he can immerse himself into a role. 4 West Kerry Live

Camp Juniors FC NATIONAL CUP – Making History

Sat 30th January 2016 will be a day to remember in the club’s history as our U13 team managed to advance to the last 16 of the National Cup with a 2-0 win over visitors Peake Villa FC from Thurles…..we have never had a team in the last 32 of the competition before this season and here we are finding ourselves playing Portlaoise AFC in a couple of weeks for a place in the quarter finals. These places are normally only for the established city clubs and sometimes our own strong clubs in Kerry but it is indeed rare to see a small rural club achieve this level of success. A big congrats to all involved, coaches, players and the huge support that has been there from parents. What is all the more rewarding is that this U13 squad are drawn from all corners of the peninsula, Castle, Camp, Annascaul, Ventry, Dingle and Lispole… young lads coming together to enjoy their sport. Camp Juniors FC 2 – 0 Peake Villa AFC Hard really to believe...a team from Camp Juniors through to the last 16 of the National Cup....now you have been offered great odds on that at the start of the season...and yet on Saturday last in at Mounthawk Park the Juniors carved out a 2-0 win over Tipperary side Peake Villa FC. Not a great display by the Juniors in pure football terms as their midfield seemed to surrender ground for much of the game but it was a gritty, organised defence that offered few if any openings to the Villa.....And when you have a player of the calibre of Maurice O’ Connell (Castle) in your No. 9 spot you are always going to create chances. And so it was, 15 minutes in, ball spilled and in there among 6 Peake Villa players Maurice hit the net. Pressure contained and 1-0 at half time! More of the same in the second half as Peake started to press forward but a harrying Maurice nipped in for another as he calmly slotted past the advancing keeper from 35 yards. The Villa pressed on, their number 7 being very impressive in the middle of the park but a solid defence led by captain Caolán O Connell and Alain Beaujouan (both Caste) were letting nothing pass. Keeper Gavin O Brien (Camp) was in top form!! A great win for Camp Juniors!! A great win for our small clubs....an afternoon to remember.

The history-making Camp Juniors Under 13s Back Row (L-R): Donal Crean (Camp), Oisín Smailes (Dingle), Coleman O Meara (Camp), Caolán O Connell (Castlegregory), Aodhán O Connor (Ventry), Thomas O Donnell, Cian Cronin, Alain Beaujouan (All Castlegregory) Front Row (L-R): Michael Casey (Annascaul), Maurice O Connell (Castlegregory), Cian Griffin, Gavin O Brien (Camp), James Hanafin, Cathal Donovan (Annascaul), Owen Garvey (Castlegregory), Cian Wright (Lispole)

U16 Division 1 - 30.01.16 Mastergeeha FC 1 - 3 CAMP JUNIORS FC Great to see the 16’s hitting form again after a very slow start to the season. Last Saturday they traveled out to Murt Park in Mastergeeha to take on the league leaders. But there was to be no 6th win as the Juniors came back well after going a goal down. Killian Falvey (Annascaul) playing in a new role up front was to equalise before half time and in a gritty second half with action end to end it was Colm Moriarty (Annascaul) who was prised open the lead for Camp. Jack Farrell, (Camp) back from injury was to seal the win with 10 minutes to go. Most encouraging for the coaches was the strong team performance and best for the Juniors on the day, Colm Moriarty in the centre of the pitch and again Fionn Cullinane (Cloghane) who had another great performance in goals Fixtures - 06.02.16 U11 Blitz: CAMP JUNIORS FC, Mastergeeha, Tralee Dynamoes, Killarney Ath. (KO @ 2pm - Mastergeeha) U13 Premier: Park A v CAMP JUNIORS FC (KO @ 12.15pm – St Brendan’s Park) U16 Div 1: CAMP JUNIORS FC v Asdee (KO @ 12 noon – Camp Sportsfield) Training Training for all squads on the Astro (Camp Sportsfield) with times as follows: Tuesday - U16 (6.30 ~ 8.00pm) Wednesday - U13 (5.00 ~ 7pm), U14 (7 ~ 8pm) Thursday – U12/11 & U10/9 (6 ~ 7pm), Saturday - U7~U8 (10~11.30am) New players are always welcome. tion by leasing out such consolidated entitlements on a long term basis.

Glas I And Ii Actions And Deadlines

Income Tax Measures:

Please note that these do not purport to give a definitive legal interpretation of the various measures and individuals may wish to seek professional advice if availing of them.

Many farmers have received their approval letter for GLAS I and Acceptance letters are winging their way to 11,300 GLAS II applicants are we write. With this comes the obligation to fulfil many options some of which are easy, while all are beneficial to the environment. Some of the quirkier ones are also the easier ones to complete, it being possible to complete these tasks over a weekend. Many have worries about the following design, so get out your glasses and examine the following:

Exemption of Certain Income from Leasing of Farm Land

Bat Boxes

Income Averaging Farming

The Objectives of this option is to improve biodiversity in the farming landscape and replace habitats lost through changes in farming practice. Bats also play an important role in farm pest management as they feed on midges, flies and other potential pest species.

An indicative list of the income tax measures that are available to the farming sector are listed here, along with a brief explanation (updated for changes introduced in Budget 2015).

Capital Allowances • Capital Allowance for Farm Buildings and Other Works • Capital Allowance for Milk Quota Purchase Relief for Increase in Carbon Tax on Farm Diesel Stock Relief • 25% General Stock Relief on Income Tax • 100% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Certain Young Trained Farmers • 50% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Registered Farm Partnerships • Relief for Stock Transfer due to discontinued Farming Trade Profits from Occupation of Woodlands Special Treatment of Profits from Compulsory Disposal of Livestock • Income Averaging for Compulsory Disposal of Livestock • Stock Relief for Compulsory Disposal of Livestock Exemption of Certain Income from Leasing of Farm Land This is a long standing relief, designed to encourage longer term leases of farm land. The lease must have a minimum definite term of five years or more to qualify for relief. There have been a number of modifications to this measure since it was introduced initially in 1985. With effect from 1 January 2015 the amount of income that may be exempted under a qualifying long term lease has been increased by 50% and a fourth threshold has been introduced for lease periods of 15 or more years with income of up to €40,000 being exempted. Where one or more qualifying leases are entered into, some on or after 1 January 2015 and some at any other time (i.e. prior to 1 January 2015) then the amount of the exemption is limited, in aggregation, to the following:

This action is to help to replace natural roost locations for bats that have been removed through the changes in farming practice. It will help to conserve some of the nine bat species found in Ireland. All Irish bat species are protected by the 1976 Wildlife Act and 2000 amendment and the EU Habitats Directive. Bat boxes are most likely to be used if located in areas where bats feed. Bats in particular favour hedgerows and treelines as navigation routeways and feeding sites. Areas where bats can be spotted zipping around in the evenings are suitable sites to locate a bat roost box. Install new bat roost boxes in groups of at least three boxes per tree or three boxes per post or three boxes per building. The boxes in each location must face in different directions. Bat Roost Boxes must be in place by 31st March for GLAS I and 31st July for GLAS II applicants. The maximum number of Bat boxes is 15, in groups of a minimum of three boxes per tree or per post or per farm building. The location must be clearly marked on the map and must be maintained in the same position for the duration of the contract. Boxes) can be made from wood or woodcrete and must be draught free. Bat Boxes cannot be on the same tree/stake/post as bird or bee boxes. It is recommended that bat boxes are placed a minimum of 4 metres off the ground and an area of 1m radius around the Roost Box must be clear of obstacles such as no ivy and/or branches. It is also recommended that boxes are not placed in a lit up area of the farmyard or adjacent to lighting. Bat boxes should ideally be place close to hedgerows or areas of scrub where bats will hunt. Once the box is installed, a marking must be put on the tree or post to identify it for inspection purposes.

• €18,000 per annum where leases are 5 or 6 years • €22,500 per annum where leases are 7 but less than 10 years • €30,000 per annum where leases are for 10 but less than 15 years • €40,000 per annum where leases are for 15 years or more For land jointly owned each individual is entitled to a separate maximum reduction of the appropriate amounts listed above against their respective share of the rent from a qualifying lease. The lower age threshold of 40 years for lessors has been removed and in consequence the reference to lessors who are permanently incapacitated has also been removed. A qualifying lessee is an individual who is not connected with the lessor (or with any of the lessors if there is more than one). Effectively this means that a lessor is not entitled to relief where the land is let to family members or family members of their spouse or civil partner. A company may be an eligible lessee provided it is not connected to the lessor. It should be noted however that while leases between connected persons are not eligible for the income tax exemption for long-term leases of land, this is balanced by the availability of Agricultural Relief from Capital Acquisition Tax (CAT) and Retirement Relief from Capital Gains Tax (CGT), which help facilitate intergenerational transfers of land. Since 1 January 2005 lease income can include income from land and standard Single Farm Payment entitlements (note: entitlements are attached to the Herd Number not the land), thus leasing land, the landowner/ lessor may negotiate a value into the lease in return for also leasing out the existing entitlements to the farmer/lessee. However, in situations where a lessor may have lost land in the past, through for example planting forestry or losing a conacre arrangement, the lessor may have stacked or consolidated these entitlements on their herd number which in effect meant they ended up with a higher unit value per entitlement. It is not open in these instances for the landowner/lessor to then avail of this tax exemp12 West Kerry Live

Bird Boxes The objective is to improve biodiversity in the farming landscape and replace habitats lost through changes in farming practice. This action is to help to replace natural habitats for birds that have been removed through changes in farming practice. As a result of changes to our countryside, several bird species have come to rely on farm buildings and other structures for nesting habitats. Install new Bird Boxes by the 31st March

for GLAS I and 31st July for GLAS II applicants also, by placing a maximum of 1 Bird Box per tree or post or on the external wall of a farm building. They cannot be on the same tree/stake/post as Bat or Bee Boxes. The location must again be clearly marked on the map and must be maintained in the same position for the duration of the contract and the boxes may also be made from wood or woodcrete and must be draught free. It is recommended that old nest material is cleaned out annually to prevent carryover of parasites from one nesting season to the next, ideally in February. Bird Boxes should be placed at least 2.5 metres off the ground. Entrance of the box must face North or North East. Bird Boxes should be tilted slightly forward to allow moisture to drain out. Once the box is installed, a marking must be put on the tree or post to identify it for inspection purposes.

to France while in the Philippines election fever has cost the lives of over 60 people as Marcos struggles to retain power. Two trains crashed head-on in Canada. 23 dead.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Monday, February 10. English World Cup medal winner Jack Charlton is the new manager of the Irish soccer team. Some big names, including former Liverpool boss Bob Paisley, had thrown their hats in the ring but Charlton is the choice and the first non-Irish coach of the home team.

By Ted Creedon Saturday, February 1, 1986. Dropped some bags of garbage off at the dump in Kilfountain and noticed a collection of small wooden barrels left there. I asked a guy who was removing three of them what they contained and he said 'Salt. The fish crowd threw them there'. Went home, got a trailer, returned and spent 20 minutes rolling three barrels through ankle-deep muck to the trailer. Anyway, brought them home and sawed them in half. They were full of old fish meal but quality wooden casks are a rarity in this age of metal and plastic so they'll make fine garden tubs. Ireland were trounced in rugby by France in Paris today 29-9 while Wales beat Scotland in a great game in Cardiff. Also in Paris,a bomb was found at the top of the Eifel Tower and diffused.

Sunday, February 2. The weather is very cold and a strong easterly wind has been blowing for several days now. There have been avalanches and floods across Europe leaving a trail of death (28) and destruction.

Monday, February 3. When passing the dump at Kilfountain I noticed that the council has flattened all the piles of rubbish including the remaining wooden barrels. The Pope met with Mother Teresa at her refuge in Calcutta.

Tuesday, February 4. People are very upset and angry following the Government's decision to close 8 hospitals around the country. Not only that but they plan to close the Carysfort teachers training school also. What's next?

Wednesday, February 5. Mount Brandon looks splendid in a mantle of frozen snow. It has turned very cold and we may have a heavy frost later. Last November a German national, Berthold Maass, was summonsed to appear in Dingle court arising out of an earlier incident in Dingle Post Office when he vaulted over the counter to retrieve a letter he had posted. When the gardaí went to his residence in Clooshmore he fired a bolt from a crossbow which struck Garda Joe Curran. He has been detained in Dundrum Asylum and is now to be sent back to Germany.

Tuesday, February 11. Shrove Tuesday. Sometimes called Pancake Tuesday but used to be known as Skelligs Night when we were growing up in Bantry. Groups from different streets would drag blazing fires, in old bathtubs, around the town. Never understood the link between Shrove Tuesday, Skelligs Night and bonfires. More than 20 people feared dead in a hotel fire in Japan. Well-known science fiction writer Frank Herbert died aged 65 - best known for Dune. Pancakes for tea tonight.

Wednesday, February 12. Chaired meeting of the parents council in the CBS national school last night. At present we're fundraising ( Who isn't ?) to provide a better school library and are getting the free use of the Phoenix cinema from Michael Francie for a matinee next month. We're also having an Irish Tea Party in the Hillgrove on February 28. Séamus Kelliher was nominated to represent the council at the regional council.

Thursday, February 13. Archaeologists have rediscovered the tomb of King Tut's treasurer, Maya, in Egypt. The tomb was first discovered back in the 1840s but its location was lost following sandstorms.

Friday, February 14. Letter from Tralee UDC inviting me on a new committee to set up a county museum - meeting next Wednesday. Also next Wednesday will be meeting with County Manager Tom Collins to discuss setting up a Local Monuments Advisory Committee. Must prepare a submission for that and a reference document for the establishment of a county museum.

Thursday, February 6. Snow, ice, frost and bitterly cold winds from the east and the forecast is bad. The ESB are doing some line work by night and power will be off tonight from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Revolution brewing in Haiti and trouble in the Philippines.

Friday, February 7. It was almost 8 a.m. before the ESB was fully restored. Doyles restaurant has leased the walled garden in Coláiste Íde so as to have a supply of fresh vegetables for the season. President Ronald Reagan celebrated his 75th birthday yesterday. He is the oldest president to hold that office.

Saturday, February 8. Paudie Fitzgerald told me that he has secured a finishing stage of the Rás Tailtean for Dingle on June 26th which should bring some excitement to the town. In Haiti the dictator Baby Doc Duvalier has been deposed and has fled

Paddy Bawn and The American Civil War Damien Shiels is a leading authority on Irish involvement in the American Civil War. Here he recounts the link between legendary footballer Paddy Bawn Brosnan and the American Civil War.

Damien Shiels On 14th September 1947, New York witnessed a unique sporting occasion. In front of more than 30,000 people at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, the Gaelic footballers of Kerry and Cavan did battle in what remains the only All-Ireland Football Championship Final ever to be held outside of Ireland. Among the men who donned the green and gold of Kerry that day was Paddy Bawn Brosnan of Dingle. Even in the annals of Ireland’s most famed footballing county, Paddy Bawn Brosnan remains special. Paddy had captained Kerry in 1944 when they lost the All-Ireland to Roscommon, and had taken home winner’s medals in 1940, 1941 and 1946. The New York match of 1947 was aimed at bringing this major event to the huge Irish-American community in the United States, 100 years after the Famine which had led so many to emigrate. But Paddy Bawn Brosnan had a special connection to New York and America. Indeed, had it not been for events that had taken place in a Prisoner of War camp in Georgia more than 80 years previously, it is unlikely that he would have ever had an opportunity to pull on the Kingdom’s colours. What then was Paddy Bawn Brosnan’s connection to the American Civil War? It is a narrative that directly involves his Grandmother, but can be traced back even further, to the marriage of Paddy Bawn’s GreatGrandparents Daniel Dowd and Mary Murphy. A few years shy of a century before Paddy Bawn took the field at the Polo Grounds, Father Eugene O’Sullivan married Daniel and Mary in Dingle Roman Catholic Church on 29th October 1853, A year later, on 8th October 1854, they celebrated the birth of their first child, Edward. At some point shortly after that, the Dowds decided their future lay across the Atlantic, and became just three of the more than 54,000 people who emigrated from Kerry between 1851 and 1860. The favoured destination for Irish emigrants was New York, and that is where the young Dowd family arrived in the mid-1850s. A second child– a daughter Bridget– was born there about 1856. Bridget, or Biddy as she became known, came into the world on Long Island, and was Paddy Bawn Brosnan’s grandmother. If the Dowd family story had followed that of the majority of Irish immigrants to the United States in this period, Biddy Dowd would never have seen Ireland again, and Paddy Bawn Brosnan would never have been born. But seismic events intervened. By the 1860s the family had settled in Buffalo, where Daniel made the decision that changed all their lives forever, when on 6th September 1862 he enlisted in the Union army. In 1862 Daniel Dowd became one of the c. 200,000 Irish-born men who would serve during the American Civil War. He was joined in the ranks by thousands of Kerrymen; there is little doubt that it was this conflict that saw more Kerrymen fight, and more Kerrymen die, than any other war in history. The Dingle native had decided not to join just any unit. Instead he enlisted in the 155th New York Infantry, one of the regiments that would form part of Corcoran’s Irish Legion. Its leader Brigadier-General Michael Corcoran from Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo was a noted Fenian, and many supporters of the cause of Ireland specifically chose to join his brigade. Whether Daniel was one of them, or simply wanted to serve close to his fellow Irishmen, remains unknown. Daniel was mustered in as a private in Company I of the 155th New York at Newport News, Virginia on 19th November 1862. He was recorded as a 29 year old laborer who was 5 feet 5 inches in height, with a fair complexion, gray eyes and light hair. His surname was one that caused considerable confusion for recorders at the time. Sometimes recorded as Doud or Doody, Daniel was placed on the regimental roster as ‘Daniel Dout.’ It wasn’t long before he got his first taste of action in the Civil War, as in January his regiment was engaged the Battle of Deserted House, Virginia. Though only a mere skirmish in comparison to what the Legion would endure in 1864, it nonetheless must have had quite an impact on Daniel and the men of the 155th. Private Daniel Dowd spent the next year in Virginia with his unit. On 18 West Kerry Live

17th December 1863 he found himself guarding a railroad bridge, part of a detachment of some 50 men of the Legion that were protecting the Orange & Alexandria line at Sangster’s Station. At a little after 6pm that evening they were set upon by a body of Confederate cavalry, who threatened to overrun them as they sought to burn the bridge. The Rebels attacked on a number of occasions, eventually getting around the flanks and rear of the Irishmen, succeeding in setting fire to their tents and forcing them into a retreat. Cut off, the detachment would normally have looked to their telegraph operator to call for reinforcements, but he was apparently so drunk he was unable to use his equipment. General Corcoran and the remainder of the Legion only learned of the attack around 8.30pm, when a local Unionist came to inform them of events. The relief force eventually re-established a connection with the detachment, but although the bridge was saved, a number of men had been captured. Among them was Dingle-native Daniel Dowd. We have scant details of Daniel’s life as a prisoner-of-war, but initially he was likely held near Richmond. At some point in the spring or early summer of 1864 he was moved to the recently opened– and soon to be notorious– Camp Sumter, Georgia. Better known as Andersonville, between February 1864 and the close of the war almost 13,000 prisoners lost their lives in the unsheltered compound. Disease, much of it caused by malnutrition, was rife. On 3rd July 1864 Daniel was admitted to the camp hospital suffering from Chronic Diarrhoea. He must have been in an extremely severe state at the time, as he did not live through the day. Following the conflict his grave was identified, and today forms part of Andersonville National Cemetery, where he rests in Grave 2809.

Andersonville as it appeared on 17th August 1864, a little over a month after Daniel died (Library of Congress) Shorn of her main support, the now widowed Mary decided to leave America behind and retrace her steps to Dingle, presumably to be close to family who could provide assistance. She returned to her home town with Edward and Biddy in tow; Edward must have had little or nomemory of Kerry, while Biddy was experiencing Ireland for the very first time. In 1869 Mary, now 45-years-old, went in search of a U.S. widow’s pension based on Daniel’s service to help support the children. Now living at “The Strand”, Dingle, she compiled information about her marriage and her children’s birth to send to Washington D.C. as part of her application. Unfortunately, the variant spellings of her husband’s name came back to haunt her. In the marriage record, Daniel’s surname had been written as ‘Doody’, sufficiently different from the ‘Dout’ recorded on the regimental roster to raise suspicions that this was not the same man. To compound matters there was also no available documentation relating to Biddy’s birth. Although the Commissioner of Emigration had written to every Catholic parish in Long Island in order to locate it, he met with no success. The combination of these two issues, together with the difficulty in dealing with the Washington authorities at such a remove, meant that Mary’s pension wasn’t granted. Her failure to provide the additional evidence requested meant that her claim was classified as ‘abandoned.’ Mary never fully gave up fully on the process; the last entry in her file is a letter she had written in the 1890s. Addressed from Waterside, Dingle on 4th July 1892, it was sent to the Secretary of the Claim Agent Office at the White House in Washington D.C.:

Sir, I beg to state that I Mary Dowd now living here and aged about 65 am the widow of Daniel Dowd who served as a soldier in the late American war of 1863, and died a Prisoner of War in Richmond Prison Virginia [actually in Andersonville, Georgia]. Said Daniel Dowd served in the Army of the North. After his death, I deposited the necessary documents to prove my title to pension, in the hands of a Mr. Daniel McGillycuddy Solicitor Tralee, with the view to place them before the authorities in Washington , and he on 27th December 1873, forwarded the same to a Mr. Walsh a Claim Agent, for the purpose of lodging same. Since, I have not received a reply to my solicitor’s letters or received any pay nor pension or acknowledgement of claim.

tion in Georgia in 1864, it is unlikely that Paddy Bawn Brosnan would ever have been born. The story of the footballing legend’s family is evidence of the often unrecognised impact of what was the largest conflict in Kerry people’s history. One wonders did Paddy Bawn reflect on his own grandmother’s New York story as he made his own journey across the Atlantic to take part in that historic sporting occasion only two years after her death in 1947. This article first appeared on Damien Shiels’ website: www.irishamericancivilwar.com along many others exploring Irish involvement in the American Civil War .

I also learn that my husband at his death had in his possession £100, which he left to Father Mc Coiney who prepared him for death, in trust for me, and which sum never reached me. I know no other course better, than apply to you, resting assured that you will cause my just claim to be sifted out, when justice will be measured to a poor Irish widow who is now working hard to maintain a long family. As was common at the time, Mary was illiterate– the letter was written for her by her solicitor McGillycuddy, and she made her mark with an ‘X’. It seems unlikely she ever received any monies as a result of it. Her American-born daughter Biddy grew to adulthood in Ireland. Her home had become Dingle, Co. Kerry rather than Buffalo, New York entirely as a result of her father’s death in a Prisoner of War camp more than 6,000 km from Ireland. Daniel’s fateful Civil War service also meant his daughter married and started a family in Ireland rather than America. Biddy’s husband was a fisherman, Patrick Johnson, and together the couple had seven children. One of them, Ellie, was Paddy Bawn Brosnan’s mother. Biddy died in 1945 and is buried in St. James’s Church in Dingle. Unlike her father’s resting place in Andersonville, it is not marked with a headstone. The American Civil War had a long-lasting, inter-generational impact on tens of thousands of Irish people, both in Ireland and the United States. Had it not been for the Confederate decision to launch an attack at Sangster’s Station in Virginia in 1863, or Daniel’s incarcera-

The pitch in Keel was in good condition despite the wind and rain. G/G/C started better and were two points up after ten minutes before K/L wing back Luke Flynn leveled matters with two good points. G/G/C scored a goal through Danny O'Shea after a rebound from a good save by K/L Goalkeeper Cillian Sayers and extended their lead with points from Caolim Teahan and Tommy Cahill. K/L responded with a Ronan Buckley free to leave it K/L 0-3 G/G/C 1-5 at half time. Scores were hard to come by in the first ten minutes of the second half until another Buckley free started a K/L comeback. A goal and a point from Joeseph Clifford and a point from Buckley put K/L in the lead 1-6 to 1-5 at the end of the third quarter. G/G/C replied with three good points from Tommy Cahill to regain the lead. Points from Buckley and Dara O'Shea leveled matters again with three minutes remaining. As thoughts turned to extra time, both sides went in search of a winning score and it was G/G/C's Caolim Teahan who pointed the winner to send G/G/C into a semi final against Laune Rangers. Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta

Beidh Cluiche Cártaí (Bord do ochtar) ar siúl sa ‘Dingle Pub’ ar an nDomhnach, 7 Feabhra 2016 ag tosnú @ 6p.m. ar mhaithe le Féile na Bealtaine. Card game in ‘The Dingle Pub (Tables of 8) on Sunday, 7 February 2016 @ 6p.m.

Nuair a d’fhilleas ó na Stáit Aontaithe tá breis is mí ó shin bhíos tugtha traochta. Níor cheapas go mbeinn amhlaidh ach bhí a lán taistil déanta agam agus mé tar éis freastal ar go leor ócáidí. Bhí taispeántas den scannán Gáirí Do-áirithe na Mara mar chuid den oíche ómóis dom ar thrí ócáid, ach n’fhaca féin an scannán iomlán ar aon ócáid acu. Ansin bhíos sa bhaile faoin am go raibh sé á thaispeáint san Metropolitan Musaeum of Modern Art 21 agus 22 Nollaig. Ba mhór an moladh é sin mar ná taispeántar ansiúd ach scannáin a gcreidtar go bhfuil buanna ar leith ag gabháil leo. Ach tharla gur bhuaileas lena lán seanchairde. Ghabhas an tslí go léir go hospidéal i Washington D.C. ar an nDomhnach le bualadh le hothar a bhí go tinn le hailse agus gur thugas turas air féin agus a chlann daichead bliain ó shin. Nár dheas mar a tharla gur bhaineas an t-ospidéal ina raibh sé amach ar a deich chun a ceathair in am do Aifreann i séipéal an ospidéil mar ar ofrálas Aifreann dó agus é féin i láthair. Is sa traen a thaistealaíos ansiúd. Bhí áthas orm go raibh na paisinéirí breá cainteach. Táinig stuaire de phaisinéir gorm mná agus shuigh taobh liom. Thosnaíomar ag caint le chéile gan mhoill. Ag insint scéal ár mbeatha dá chéile. Aturnae ab ea í, agus d’fheidhmigh sí mar bhreitheamh i gcásanna ar leith. Chuir sin iontas orm. Ba ghearr gur tairring sé chuici a bosca lóin. Thugas faoi deara go raibh sí ag déanamh dhá leath den lón agus shín sí chugam an dá chuid. Tar éis beagán áitimh chaitheas glacadh leis an gceann ba mhó. Ansin bhí deoch uainn araon. N’fhéadfainn dul ag triall ar a leithéid; seo siar léi á lorg; ‘súlach úll’ a dúrt léi a ba mhaith liom agus dheineas mó dhícheall airgead a thabhairt di ach theip orm dar ndóigh. Deich mbliana ó shin nó mar sin ba mhinic a chaithfinn dul sa traein go Baile Átha Cliath; bhíodh na paisinéirí muinteartha cainteach le chéile. Is mó cara a dheineas ar na turasanna úd. Le déanaí chuas ó Thrá Lí go Baile Átha Cliath agus níor labhair éinne liom ná níor labhras le héinne go prioc. D’fhanas im’ shuíochán; ba ghearr gur rith paisinéir ar ais isteach chugam. ‘Táimid i Heuston,’ ar sé liom. ‘Gura maith agat’ arsa mise, ‘táim ag fanacht le cathaoir rotha.’ Tá galar na meán míshóisialta á smachtú de réir a chéile i Meirice. Bhí Féile á bheartú agam nuair a bhíos san ospidéal. Bhí ceiliúradh Léachtaí Cholm Cille XLVII sa Díseart le bheith mar chuid de sin agus bhíos á cheapadh go bhféadfaimis oscailt agus beannú an Ghairdín Urnaí a bheith ina chuid mhór de. Ach bhíos á mheas gur ar an 3 Márta go dtí an séú Márta a bheadh an Fhéile, ag dúnadh sheachtain na Cásca. Ach nuair a thánag chugam féin agus gur dheineas caidreamh leis an saol mór arís agus go bhfuaireas bróisiúr ó Mhá Nuad le clár na Léachtaí air, chonac go raibh breall orm. Gur 1-2 Aibreán a bheadh na Léachtaí, An Éiceolaíocht i dTraidisiún na Gaeilge.

Myra Lynch, Annascaul at the Vienna State Opera House, enjoying New Year's celebrations in Austria.

News from The Díseart I had a delightful visit to New York from 10th December to the 17th. I was from one lively scene to the next and was so thrilled that my busy back-ground work during most of my life was appreciated so much. A showing of the film ‘The Uncountable Laughter of the Sea’ was the major part of each occasion; I had so many distractions that I failed to see the whole film on any one occasion. I hope the showing in the Metropolitan Musaeum of Modern Art 21-22 December will ensure good circulation in Ireland and in the USA. We had a heat wave in New England while I was there but I arrived home in a cold wave with swollen ankles which resulted in me having a full month in the Dingle Hospital. That too was a happy time as I wallowed in excellent care in wonderful company. We were all so happy and friendly and we had a stream of visitors. The Plan for a big Díseart Festival 3rd March to 6th was thought out during some sleepless hours but only some of the events proposed will be fitted in with the Léachtaí 1-2 April, a later date. At our Board meeting last Friday we managed to get a revised and corrected program ready and it is hoped it will publicized in the near future, le cúnamh Dé.

We were delighted with the turnout out for The Business Idea Generation Clinic that took place last Thursday in Dingle. Tom O’Leary from O’Leary Training and Consultancy shared his extensive knowledge of start up businesses and gave practical tips on how to get started with your business ideas. Participants found it excellent and very informative and we hope to run the course in the future again because of the great response we got from it. The Jobs Club will run from February 29th – 25th March, daily from 10 -1, for four weeks. It will cover techniques for job searching, CV preparation, cover letters, applications and interview skills. It is free but there are only a few places left. We are currently taking names for ECDL training that we hope to put on shortly – please contact the office if you are interested. We are also taking names for Jeep Theory Test that we hope to run in Dingle in the next few weeks. More information / Tuile eolas 066 7142788

Well, we kicked off the new year at the Annascaul Singing Club in Patcheen's Bar in rip-roaring fashion. Old songs and new got an airing at January's gathering and included our own tribute to David Bowie. Also, as it was the anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet a few days later, a couple of his songs got an airing. We covered a variety of material though, ranging through several different repertoires and had some laughs too. Indeed one of our visiting singers remarked later that it had been a real happy night of singing. The club's next celebration of song will take place at Patcheen's on Annascaul's Main Street on Thursday 18th February starting at 9pm. Since it's St.Valentine's month maybe a few love songs will on the menu. And remember as always it's free and it's fun.

Open Day at Local History & Archives section of Kerry Library What did you do in the Rising? Kerry Library is mounting an exhibition as part of its commemoration of the role of the county in the Easter Rising. While the main body of the exhibition (which will run at Tralee Library from 22 March to 30 April 2016) will comprise resources available in their Local History & Archives collections, a section will be devoted to a display of family artefacts, photographs and letters relating to the Rising. These items would be loaned to Kerry Library for the duration of the exhibition, and returned to the donating families afterwards. With a view to gauging the amount of space to be devoted in the exhibition to family-held documents, Kerry Library will hold an Open Day in its Local History & Archives section on Saturday, 13 February 2016 (10.00am to 4.00pm) to bring together as wide a selection of material as possible. Any items of interest can be brought along on that day and copied, scanned or donated for long or short term loan as the case may be. So, if you want everyone to know what your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother did during the Rising, call in and be a part of our Commemoration Exhibition. Planning a Wedding from Start to Finish.

Rent groomsmen suits if required

So you have chosen to seal the deal and are getting married, Congratulations!!

Hire transportation

Planning a wedding can be quite a task but if you make a plan, set your course and follow it, your wedding plans can prove to be reasonably plain sailing and you might actually enjoy the process! First decision is the Marriage theme and wedding date. With the “who” sorted, you need to think about the where and when? Do you want a Traditional, Religious, Civil, Hotel, Marquee, Indoors/ Outdoors, Black Tie, Informal, Urban or Rural wedding? Word of advice, whatever you decide, try to keep the day and ceremony about you and your fiancé. It is very easy to be influenced by others who are quick to offer their suggestions and even demands, but try to remember, this is your day. Hopefully you will only do it once so make sure it is the wedding you want!

Book other rental items such as seat covers, linens, chairs and anything else you might need for your ceremony, meal and reception. If you chose to do so, shop for gifts for your wedding party and parents. Have bridesmaid final dress fittings Meet with wedding coordinator to finalise details and budget.

1 month before Contact caterer to confirm menu and guest head count Have wedding dress final fitting

Set out below is an approximate timeline for the preparation of a wedding, but obviously and ultimately you can choose to do it whatever way you like. Set your budget: Try to prioritise your spending, make a list of the most important things or vendors where most of your budget will be spent. Select the wedding party: bridesmaids, bestman, groomsmen, flower girls etc. You should also start to think about an approximate number of guests. This is important as it will help in the selection of ceremony and reception sites. Visit ceremony and Reception sites: Venues often book out 1 to 2 years in advance, if you have your heart set on a particular location contact them asap in order to avoid disappointment.

12 months before Contact your priest, county registrar or celebrant. Create an email account to be used solely for wedding purposes, that way it is easy to keep track. Start looking for your dress, and once you find it, stop looking! Research and hire your photographer and videographer if you are going to use one.

8 to 10 months before Select bridesmaid dresses Book a DJ and musicians Research and reserve accommodation for out of town guests Decide and order your wedding dress Select a caterer if you need to.

6-8 months before Book your wedding cake Meet with and book a florist Begin planning your honeymoon if you are taking one. Decide on your wedding stationary Begin collecting addresses for your guests

4-6 months before Select groomsmen attire Shop for wedding rings Attend pre marriage course if applicable

2-3 months before Post invitations Meet with DJ and musicians to finalise song lists 26 West Kerry Live

Our Wedding: Lucy & Harry Wedding Type & Venue: Registry office and Garden Marquee Number of guests: 80 Best thing: We didn’t want a religious wedding so this option worked best for us. It allowed us to create a very personal, informal and relaxed wedding. We were able to DIY alot of jobs which helped keep the cost down. Worst thing: The clean up the next day! Anything you would change: I would have gone with my first choice of dress and not allowed myself to be influenced by others. Tips: Always trust your first instinct when choosing a dress and if you are going with a marquee wedding at home make sure to hire cleaners to come in the following day!

Our Wedding: Grace & Colm Wedding Type & Venue: Church & Hotel Number of guests: 200 for dinner plus an approx 100+ for the afters. Best thing: We both have really big extended families so it was a nice way for our families and friends to get together. Worst thing: Too many guests! Because our wedding was so big, I found the day quiet overwhelming at times, it is very hard to get to greet and chat with that number of guests and can actually be quite exhausting. Anything you would change: I would have a smaller wedding. Tips: Research your photographer well and make a list of photographs you would like them to take on the day. The day is so busy and can go by so quickly, it is very easy to forget to take certain photos that you only think of after it is over when it is too late!

Beauty Timeline and Tips Before The Big Day! 8 months Begin thinking about what kind of look you are going for, natural and romantic, polished and elegant and so on.... Start exercising, to make sure you are body confident for your big day and honeymoon, it is also a great stress reliever! Look at your diet, you are what you eat so eating well will improve the condition of your hair, nails and skin. 4-6 months Start your hair and makeup trials and decide what look best suits you and your style of dress. 2-3 months Consult with your beautician and begin your beauty regime. Now is the time to start with regular facials, peels, body scrubs and laser treatments if required. This is also a good time to think about your brows and eyelash tints. You still have time at this point to experiment with tints and shaping. If you are considering using fake or eyelash extensions try them out now, get used to the sensation of wearing them. Remember less is more, it is all about enhancing what you already have, not sweeping the streets with your eyelashes! If you don’t like the idea of false lashes having an eyelash tint is another good option, especially if you are heading off on honeymoon after the wedding. A good eyelash tint can really define your eyes without the use of makeup which is great if you are in the sun or swimming. Most beauticians won’t tint your brows or lashes until

28 West Kerry Live

they have done a sensitivity skin test so make sure you contact your beautician at this stage and get your trial done while you still have time If you plan on getting your teeth whitened this is the best time to start the process, best advice it to consult with your dentist, be very careful about buying products on the internet. Test tanning options, a bad fake tan can be the rock you perish on as a bride. You definitely don’t want to look like an umpa lumpa or a streaky rasher. Make sure your skin is well prepped and you find the right product for your skin type. If you are naturally fair, rocking up to the ceremony looking like a mahogany sideboard might not be the best idea! Make sure you start a good body exfoliating regime. The smoother the skin the easier the application the better the result! Invest in some good hair products and treatments to get those follicles healthy and glossy. 2 weeks Hair colour and trim, this is not the time to radically change your hair cut or colour. This is when things are really starting to get busy and you can start to feel a little bit stressed and overwhelmed. Try to avoid reaching for the vino and the bar of chocolate, stick with the healthy eating, avoiding salty foods and drink loads of water, your skin will thank you for it! Gentle facials at this stage as you don’t want to irritate your skin. 3-4 days Hair conditioning treatments should be applied. All waxing should be done by now, the skin needs time to allow any redness and sensitivity to disapate. A good moisturising mask, the more hydrated your skin is the easier it is too apply make-up and

www.westkerrylive.ie

achieve that healthy glow! 2 days before Manicure and Pedicure time, even if you are not someone who usually gets your nails done it is really nice to indulge in this instance. A good mani and pedi should not be underestimated, your hands will be a big part of your day between the placing of the rings to the shaking of the hands so make sure they are looking their best. A pedicure can be so relaxing and worthwhile, It is great to have gorgeous feet for your big day and don’t forget your honeymoon! Get your tan done, remember less is more, if you are not happy with the shade it is much easier to apply more than remove too much! 1 day to go! You should have all the preening and prepping done by now and be looking and feeling your absolute best. Today is a day for drinking loads of water and as difficult as it may be try and get a good night’s sleep! Day of wedding Moisturise well with a good hydrating serum, especially on the face, neck, hands and décolleté. It is nice too use a favourite perfume and matching body lotion, the scent will linger longer on the body when used with a body lotion and in the future when you smell your chosen perfume you will associate it with your special day. Give yourself plenty of time to have your hair and make-up done, try to avoid being rushed and stressed. The morning of your wedding can go by really quickly, this should be a lovely time for you, your family and friends so remember to try and relax, have a glass of bubbles, and enjoy the excitement!

Wedding Entertainment...Where to Start?! Eamonn Dowd What do we need? When should we book? How much is it all going to cost? These are just some of the questions you may be asking yourself if you’re in the fun business of planning a wedding. Musical entertainment can often be overlooked but more often than not it is the big difference between having a great wedding party and… well, one that's not so great. Getting it right for your big day may seem like an impossibility, but with a cool head (preferably screwed on) and a few chats over a couple-a cuppas, your night can be one that's forever remembered. So where to start? Before booking anything or even picking up the phone, identifying exactly when you want music during your day is crucial. This varies with each couple but for the most part there are 5 main areas to be taken into careful consideration; Church, Drinks Reception, Dinner, Band DJ. You had those 5 too??? Ok, great. Let's get it right from the get-go. Selecting suitable church music may be the trickiest of the bunch as finding appropriate outfits are limited. Piano, guitar or stringed instruments such as violin/cello accompanied by a singer is a tasteful option and is usually unique and pleasing to the ear. Some churches may be able to arrange an organ player or choir to play the standard hymns and this is also an option depending on the locality. Make sure your musicians are well experienced however as the silence of an official ceremony can often put looming pressure on a newcomer and any mishaps will be instantly recognised by the keenly raised ears of the church. Calling on your talented first cousin or prodigy niece for a song is possibly another option and a nice way to involve close ones in the event. Best of all they can't say "no", it's your wedding after all.

A good DJ will ensure the records are spinning immediately after the band as a gap in entertainment will instantly lead to an empty dance floor with people shuffling off to the smoking area and bar. Choosing a big last song is also advisable to see the night to a close. Remember you will most likely be in the middle of the floor at this time with your newly-wed partner (if ye're still married) surrounded by your family and friends so make sure it's something known yet still pulls on those heartstrings. Working with experienced professionals helps no end and each contact should make arrangements as easy and straight-forward as humanly possible. Marital stress will be needed elsewhere on make-up, hair curls and locating where the rings were left. Most importantly, don't forget to enjoy the music when it does come round…that's why you hired us remember?! For Professional Wedding DJ, Band & Drink Reception Entertainment & any further enquiries contact Eamonn Dowd 087-6720848 or see Facebook/Dowdyman.com.

The drinks reception is always a much more relaxed affair with some lively but volume conscious music a great preference. Live duos or 3 pieces are usually affordable for an 1-2 hour set and often a trad session is a perfect way to liven up the afternoon and also please Irish lovers not to mind getting feet tapping and people's bellies rumbling for dinner. Dinner music can be done simply by making a playlist on an iPod or laptop and played through the hotel sound-system which will be used later for the breathtaking speeches. A big one to remember here is to make the first song of the playlist the desired entry song for the Bride and Groom as they strut their stuff to the top table. This is totally down to preference but usually something up-tempo and bright goes down a treat…leave the soppy stuff to later. After that, the playlist should be background volume but recognisable. Remember, people are eating so heavy metal or techno is probably not the best path to go down, unless that's really what your going for. Think Forrest Gump soundtrack… The band. This causes a lot of stress and really should be one thing hovering at the top of the priority list. Busy wedding bands can be booked out 2-3 years in advance so getting the one you want, for the night you want is better done sooner rather than later. Paying extra attention to the music at friends weddings is a helpful advantage and crashing the odd randomers wedding to see a band is very acceptable. Make sure the band know your first dance as early as possible so that they have adequate time to learn it if not already in their repertoire. This can also be played on an iPod if there's an issue but is never really the same as the real deal. Bands are a chunky expense reaching up to €2,500 + extra for long distance travel so choose well. The DJ usually rounds up the day's entertainment so pay attention to getting this bang on. Make sure your Jockey of Discs is comfortable on the mic and knows what works best with the crowd on the floor. 30 West Kerry Live

Key findings arising from Mrs2Be Irish Wedding Survey 2015 •

On a whole, the average spend on weddings in 2014 increased only a small amount when comparing to 2013.

While spend has shown an increase for average spend on

the photographer, videographer, DJ, hair & make-up and wedding cake suppliers, our survey shows a slight decline in the spend in other areas (e.g. the venue, the wedding dress, jewellery and stationery).

December is by far the most popular month to get engaged (1/5th of all engagements). January is the least popular month to pop the question.

The trend for shorter engagements is continuing. Two years ago, our survey revealed that the majority of couples were to be engaged for two years or longer. This year and last, the majority fall into the 13 to 18 months category.

More than 1 in 4 couples now live together for more than 5 years before getting married.

Similar to last year, almost 1 in every 4 couples who completed our survey DO NOT get married in a church.

The most preferred number of bridesmaids is 3.

Country manors / exclusive venues are growing in popularity with 18% of couples opting to host their weddings there.

Approximate spend per head on the wedding meal falls into the €41 to €60 category.

Typical number of guests seated for the wedding meal is 101 to 150.

Almost 1 in 7 couples are thinking about taking out wedding insurance. This has dropped slightly since last year which may be an indicator of increased consumer confidence.

Good news for nervous public speakers, having the wedding speeches before the meal is becoming increasingly popular. The preference for having speeches after the meal still takes the lead, but only just. We wouldn’t be surprised to see speeches beforehand taking the lead in next year’s survey.

The survey survey found that the average spend by couples on their wedding in 2014 was €19,635. (€24,490 including the honeymoon). Information sourced from www.mrs2be.ie

Rhiannon and Anna raced the women’s junior 15, 500m sprint in the afternoon placing 1st and 2nd respectively. It was an outstanding race to watch with both girls battling it out hard. Sean went off hard in his Men’s junior 16, 500m sprint and left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he would take the first place. Another medal in the bag! James McCarthy won the Men’s Junior 18, 500m race comfortably, making it twice in a row. Monika sprinted through her 500m race, setting a new Irish record pulling 1min and 34 seconds. She brought the total number of medals to 8. Cian Clifford and Fionan Crowley had both very strong performances in very competitive categories. Now it is evident that all the hard work pays off! Foot Orthotics - The Truth Eddie O’ Grady The science behind foot orthotics is relatively new and continually evolving. To date some of the evidence regarding the benefits foot orthotics for athletes etc. has been a little conflicting. Reasons for this may include 1. differences in the experience and training of prescribing practitioners; 2. differences between orthotic suppliers and materials used 3. the temptation of monetary gain from prescribing orthotics unnecessarily. From my experience foot orthotics do work for certain conditions the majority of the time but I feel they are way overprescribed for monetary gain. They mainly seem to benefit conditions from the knee down to and including the foot. I cannot really see how they would prevent hip or back pain(unless maybe there is a leg length discrepancy),neck pain etc. as some suppliers suggest. A lot of people are under the illusion that orthotics are some kind of amazing item especially the more expensive ones. If you have a pair, take a good look at them. They are basically a very fancy supportive insole, not much more. Let’s look at how they work, i.e. in the case of a lower limb tendinopathy. This condition usually occurs when the tendon has been under strain for long periods. The idea is that you put in a strategically located lift in the orthotic to take the pressure off the tendon and thus give it a chance to heal. For example with an achilles tendinopathy, you put in a little heel lift thus taking the pressure off the tightened achilles tendon. You are trying to reduce the tension on the tendon or give it slack, hoping as a result it gets a chance to heal. Looking at it from a different angle though, maybe you just had tightened calves from wearing high heels or from overdoing it in training. By loosening out the calves with massage and stretching you can reduce the pull and strain on the achilles tendon to which they are attached....maybe there is no need for orthotics? However other tendinopathies like tibialis posterior or peroneal can be more difficult to treat and may benefit from an orthotics. Say you have medial knee pain from running, it may be due to flat feet causing an inward force on the knee. You put in an orthotic with an arch support, it corrects the fallen arch, lessening the inward stress on the knee and taking the pressure of the medial knee. As you can see there is nothing amazing going on here and the theory is pretty good. You can even use different types of materials when manufacturing orthotics, some which give more spring in your step reducing the load on shins (shin splints) etc. In the case of plantar fasciitis which can be due to torsion on the plantar fascia as a result of rotational movement between the heel and forefoot. Here a heel lock in the orthotic coupled with an arch support can stabilise the heel and forefoot, reducing torsion on the plantar fascia and allowing it to heal. However, here are a few things I want you to consider. 1. If you have been running for several years injury free, why would you suddenly need orthotics, could you not just have an injury that needs rest or treatment. 2. You have a young child and somebody says they need orthotics because they have flat feet even though they are not in any discomfort. The child is growing and developing, do you want to alter and interfere with that natural process. sometimes even if there is mild pain, maybe it is just ‘’growing pains’’ . 3. if you have flat feet or high arches and are in no pain or discomfort, why let somebody convince you that you need orthotics. I know plenty of runners and athletes with one of those conditions (high arches or flat feet) that never wear orthotics and have no problems. 4. The ‘’one leg an inch shorter than the other trick’’ to sell you orthotics. I can easily make it appear like one of your legs is shorter than the other when measuring you. A tiny percentage of the population 1/1000, have leg length differences of greater than 20mm or 3/4 inch(Guichet et al.; Clin Orthop. Rel. Res. 1991, 272:235). It is at this level that leg length discrepancy becomes significant. Wearing orthotics to correct a difference when there is no difference could quiet possibly cause you problems down the line. However if there is a definite actual leg length discrepancy a little heel lift in an orthotic can correct this and provide considerable relief. I regularly see people told they have a one inch discrepancy in leg length and sold orthotics for several hundred euro. 36 West Kerry Live

Upon testing them I frequently see little or no difference whatsoever in their leg lengths. There is an interesting article on leg length discrepancies to be read at http://runnersconnect.net/running-injury-prevention/leg-lengthdiscrepancy-running/. Also the only way to reliably determine anatomical leg length discrepancies is to take x-rays of the lower extremities and actually measure the length of the femur, tibia, talus and calcaneus, since these are the primary weight bearing bones. 5. Lower back pain is often either disc or muscular related. I cannot in any way see how orthotics could benefit these conditions. As for neck pain, not a hope. As for gait analysis in running stores, this is my advice; If you have been using a specific runner and having no problems, stick with it, brand and all. So often I have seen people measured up for runners and told for example they are over-pronating. Then they are given a runner to correct for this. Next thing two months later they have a tendon injury because they have been used to running a certain way in specific running shoes and now this altered runner is changing that suddenly, with no chance for the body to adapt. Stick with the footwear you are used to. Make sure it is comfortable, supportive and laced up well. Replace worn out foot wear. Also for people new to running, give your body time to adapt. Take it slowly, this is the best way to prevent injury. In terms of price, you should be able to get a quality off the shelf orthotic for around €60. These often do the trick for many conditions. They usually include little stick on attachments to correct for various conditions so your practitioner can customise them to the injury. Custom orthotics shouldn’t really set you back more than €300. Paying more does not mean you have a better product. Many are way overpriced for what you are getting. What seems to be major factor in whether orthotics will work or not is how comfortable the feel when worn. If you have been overtraining resulting in a lower limb tendinopathy, don’t think you can just stick on a pair of orthotics and keep going. Often it is rest along with eccentric rehabilitation exercises that is needed, not orthotics as such. I hope the above article gives you a few things to think on.

blood vessels. The herb’s anti-inflammatory action protects against arthritic type illnesses, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and skin disorders e.g. eczema and psoriasis. Turmeric also improves liver function and can be helpful for constipation and gall bladder problems.

Healing with Herbs

In summary, turmeric has many different benefits. It can potentially prevent cardiovascular disease, reduce high cholesterol and alleviate skin conditions, arthritic conditions and asthma. As an anti-oxidant turmeric is anti-ageing and importantly boosts the immune system and improves resistance to infection. This is a good time to introduce this food herb to your diet as winter is beginning to take its toll compromising our immune systems particularly after the festive season of over indulgence.

Deirdre Daly Turmeric: Curcuma longa Family: Zingiberaceae Parts Used: Root/Rhizome Turmeric comes from the rhizome (rootstock) of the Curcuma longa plant and is an ancient root traditionally used in Chinese and Indian herbal medicine for its healing properties. The plant is a member of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family and has been used as a medicine, food, and colouring agent for thousands of years in Asian countries. Its use as medicinal herb in western herbalism has a lower profile though research carried out in recent years has shown the many health benefits of the root of this plant.

Preparations and Dosage: As a food spice 250 to 500mg can be taken once or twice daily. If treating a specific disease up to 1 to 2 grams of the powdered turmeric can be taken daily.

Turmeric health benefits come primarily from its main ingredient, curcumin, which has been widely researched and shown to have antioxidant properties. Anti-oxidants are nutrients that protect against cellular damage, the latter, which can trigger a range of health problems. Anti-oxidants also help to boost the immune system and increase resistance to infection.

Safety considerations: Turmeric is a mild uterine stimulant and high doses should be avoided during pregnancy. It is also contraindicated if on blood thinning medications due to its anti-coagulant properties.

The numerous clinical trials carried out and published demonstrated the safe and beneficial effects of turmeric and curcumin. An article by well-known herbalist Kerry Bone refers to the amazing properties of turmeric citing the herb to be anti-oxidant, anti-coagulant, cholesterol lowering, anti-inflammatory and potentially anti-tumour. Turmeric can be classed as a food herb and together with other food herbs, such as fenugreek and garlic have blood cholesterol lowering properties. Both garlic and turmeric have anti-coagulant properties supporting a healthy cardiac system and inhibiting clotting within the

The Future Looks Bright For Vitamin D Irene Ní Fhlannúra Vitamin D has long been associated with bone health, however, current research shows that vitamin D is involved in multiple functions within the body. There are vitamin D receptor (VDRs) cells in most organs of the body including the brain, heart, bone, skin, intestines, kidneys, ovaries, testes, prostate and breast suggesting that vitamin D is required by these organs for optimum functioning. The evidence is mounting that the role of vitamin D has been greatly underestimated in terms of disease prevention and that the long held belief that bone diseases such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults (softening of the bones) are the only diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency. A look back in history makes for very confusing reading but suffice to say between the rats, goats, dogs and Scottish children scientists in the 1920’s finally concluded that rickets developed as a result of extreme vitamin D deficiency. Interestingly, cod liver oil was first prescribed as a treatment for rickets in 1824 but like many traditional remedies of old, the reasoning wasn’t well understood at the time. Now, that we have great advances made in science and medicine the involvement of vitamin D in many diseases has come to light and warrants serious consideration in the treatment of most modern chronic diseases. Vitamin D is unlike other vitamins as it acts like a hormone, regulating function once activated within the body. It is best known for increasing calcium and phosphorous absorption and thus directly influences bone strength. Apart from bone health, vitamin D’s impact on our health is far reaching. The discovery of vitamin D receptors (VDRs) on the cells of such a variety of organs has led investigators to look closer at vitamin D. While much of this research is still ongoing - the results are astounding. Simply put, VDRs in beta cells of the pancreas suggest that vitamin D has a role in insulin regulation - most diabetic patients tested for vitamin D were found to have insufficient levels. In cardiovascular health VDRs present in the cells of the heart lining and muscle are thought to protect against atherosclerosis. Vitamin D enhances immunity in particular along the upper respiratory tract and studies show lower incidence of influenza, tuberculosis and viral respiratory infections among those with higher levels of vitamin D. The association is stronger in individuals with existing respiratory disease such as asthma and COPD. Astonishingly, vitamin D has been shown to inhibit the development of autoimmune diseases. Laboratory, clinical and epidemiological (studies of populations) research have found the prevalence of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease increases with latitude suggesting vitamin D plays a role in these autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D has been shown to have a positive effect on mood. Major depression increases when vitamin D in the blood dips below normal levels and vitamin D supplementation has been shown to have a positive effect on serotonin levels and benefit to those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In cancer, vitamin D is involved in how immune cells identify cancer cells, induce cancer cell suicide (apoptosis) as well as interfere with cell signalling to inhibit the growth and spread of malignant disease. It is difficult to summarize the volumes of evidence but vitamin D appears to have a connection with every chronic disease plaguing our society - whether the lack of vitamin D directly influences the onset of key chronic diseases or is a consequence of disease is yet to be established but one thing for sure is that sufficiency provides a protective benefit from multiple diseases. Vitamin D differs from other vitamins as we can make our own vitamin D through sunlight exposure on the skin. Ideally, we can build up a reserve of vitamin D during the Summer months that can be stored for use during the rest of the year. People living further north of the equator (like us pale skins) are extremely efficient of making vitamin D with the short supply of sun available to us. Those with darker skin require longer times in ideal sunshine to acquire vitamin D stores. People at risk of deficiency include the elderly, babies, pregnant and breastfeeding women, obese people, those with digestive impairments and malabsorption disorders, people on medications that interfere with fat absorption such as statins and certain “slimming pills” and basically, those not getting enough sunlight during the summer months, when the UVB light is most optimal. With so many factors influencing vitamin D levels, testing provides the 38 West Kerry Live

assurance of correct supplementation to maintain optimum levels of vitamin D or to identify and correct deficiencies when they occur. Despite the fact we are only on the cusp of understanding this vital nutrient, the data so far offers much hope in the therapeutic use of vitamin D in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Ré Nua Natural Health is hosting Vitamin D Awareness week from Feb 15th – 19th. Make The Internet A Safer Place Joan Maguire This week there are calls to the United nations to make Internet access available to everyone in the world as a human right. Universal access to clean water is understandable, as is universal right to live in peace and have a basic standard of living. Before we work to provide universal access to the Internet we need to understand who are the main beneficiaries and how can a person use the Internet without having their activities tracked and recorded, without this the world is in danger of creating a situation where the benefit of the Internet to the ordinary people will pale in comparison to the financial fortunes made by computer corporations. Access to the Internet since its inception has connected people all over the globe. Since the arrival of Social Media sites we have the ability to stay in contact with friends and family abroad without having to mortgage the house. The Internet has provided us with a vehicle to express our opinions and to meet together with like minded people and it can be very entertaining, as any user knows it is possible to spend away hours on the Internet, at no cost. Tuesday the 9th of February is Safer Internet Day and is a day that we can all use to focus on how we use the Internet. One of the resources created for Safer Internet Day is a handbook developed by young people to educate young people about their online rights entitled 'The Web We Want'. It and more resources are available at saferinternetday. ie. For adults, Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to take the time to read the Privacy policies of at least one of the companies whose websites you use. We can use the Internet wisely, we can help ourselves by knowing what information we are giving away that corporations can derive financial benefit from and then decide is it a good idea to give it away.

According to Google's financial reports they made a distributable profit of $10,903,000,000 in the first nine months of 2015. This first service that Google was an Internet search engine that was made freely available to people. I cannot say exactly how they and other multinational computer companies make their money, but I do believe that it is a good idea for us the users of their services to be aware of the privacy policies of each company, how much information they keep on any user and what they do with it, do they sell it onto other people? A Warming Roast Garlic, White Bean and Chorizo Broth Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Loads of roast garlic, with white beans and chorizo, all three work together to make such a tasty and warming soup. Don’t be the slightest bit frightened by the excessive amount of garlic, when you roast garlic it mellows out the harshness and gives it an outstanding sweetness. I really count this as one of my favourite soups or broths to make, especially on a cold evening or when you are feeling a little poorly and need a little boost. I recommend buying dried beans instead of the canned varieties. However, if you are using canned varieties, drain them and add them at the same stage of the recipe. If using the dried beans make sure to soak them the night before in plenty of water. This soup has very Spanish flavours within it, but I like to give it a small bit more body with the addition of the celery and beans. If you find you have any leftover cooked meats especially any slowly cooked meats, pick them into small stands and add them to it about fifteen minutes before the end (salted beef brisket is so delicious with this recipe). This little trick turns it in to a really hearty meal and will allow you to use up left over. It is best served with some crusty bread and can be served as a warming lunch or as an evening meal. If you like this recipe why not join us at Dingle Cookery School for our next Friday night Supper club which is on Friday 12th at 6.30pm and is Spanish Themed. We will cook plenty of dishes like this in a hands-on class taking you through the flavours of Spain, after the class the best part we will all sit down together to our Spanish Feast. Also our Aspiring Gourmet Couples Hands-on Class is on Saturday 13th for details of any of our classes contact us at 086 8723521 or www. dinglecookeryschool.com

Roast the garlic by placing the cloves in a pan with 2 tablespoons of rapeseed oil, cover with foil and place in an oven at 180°C. Leave to cook for about 25-30 minutes. At this stage the garlic should be golden and soft. Allow them to cool slightly while reserving the oil. You can now remove and discard the skins from the garlic, leaving you with just the fragrant flesh of the garlic. Use a blender to puree the garlic cloves. In a medium sized pot over medium heat add the rest of the oil and then add the diced onion with a pinch of salt, allow the onion to cook gently for about five minutes, add the celery and thyme and continue to cook for another five minutes. Turn up the heat slightly and then add the chorizo, cook this for about three minutes. At this stage the chorizo should have caramelised slightly. Add in the smoked paprika and stir in well. Add the roasted garlic puree and the chicken stock to the pot. Bring this to a simmer for about ten minutes add the beans at this stage and continue to simmer for about five minutes. Taste and season it with salt and black pepper. To serve add chopped parsley and drizzle some of the oil form the roasted garlic. Enjoy!!!

6 Whole Garlic Bulbs, cloves separated but not peeled 1 large onion finely diced 2 stalks of celery finely diced Small bunch of thyme (leaves picked from the stalk) 250g Chorizo cut into small pieces 300g white beans (any dried bean will do such as Cannellini, Flageolet, soaked in water overnight) ½ teaspoon of sweet smoked paprika 1.5 litres of Chicken Stock Bunch of Flat Parsley stalks removed and finely chopped 4 tablespoons of Rapeseed Oil Salt and Pepper Method Rinse the pre-soaked beans and drain them well, place in a large pot and add some thyme leaves and cover well with water. Do not add salt to them at this stage, as this will make the skin hard as they are cooking and will not allow the beans to cook correctly. Simmer this gently for about an hour to an hour and a half; keep checking until beans are tender. 44 West Kerry Live

Times Past with Ted Creedon The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin, in the winter of 1985/’86.

men's green jerseys with 'Ireland' emblazoned on them. Then all hell broke loose. The Olympic officials recognised the 'illegal' competitors and rushed over to them. Paudie and his team-mates were asked to withdraw but they refused to leave the track. The officials threatened to call the police but the Irishmen wouldn't budge. By now the track was covered in reporters and newsreel cameras as well as cyclists and officials. The race was delayed. The protest was blaring over the loud speakers. Then the police arrived. The police asked them to leave. They were understanding of the situation but firm. The Irishmen would not be pressured and held their ground. Eventually, the police got a warrant for their arrest and they were 'removed' from the track. The race started and the moment, that athletes everywhere aspire to, had gone. The three Irishmen were 'held in custody' until half-way through the race and then released. Their protest was world-wide news and the attending publicity led, eventually, to both cycling associations being reconciled but at a cost to Paudie. When he returned home he was banned from international competition. He continued to compete in local races for a while but became disillusioned and retired - his heart was no longer in the sport. Even now - thirty years later Paudie is reluctant to talk about Melbourne and what might have been. He had dearly wanted to be part of an all-Ireland team - as are our rugby players. He could have raced with the 26-county team but did he rate his chances? Could he have won the supreme trophy? "We were very fit, very strong and very dedicated. You'd never know what might have happened on the day. You'd never know." he said.

Olympic Outrage: Paudie Fitzgerald on Melbourne '56. Paudie Fitzgerald removed his track-suit before the start of the 1956 Road Cycle Race at the Melbourne Olympics. He was surrounded by hundreds of cyclists - the best in the world. He had done it! Reached the top - the Olympic Final! Nearby, his two team-mates from Ireland, Tom Flanagan and Tom Gerrard, were also shedding their track-suits. The three of them exchanged glances which said ' Will we get away with it?'. For a few moments Paudie reflected on the events which had brought him 12,000 miles from his native Lispole. It had all begun at the Dingle Races in the early 1950s. In those days the races were not just for horses but also consisted of cycling events. Paudie had competed in a cycle race from Lispole to Dingle and won. Pleased with local success he entered the County Championship, which was staged in Kenmare, and came second to cycling star Gene Mangan. The first Rás Tailteann was held in Dublin in 1953 and Paudie travelled to the capital city for the first time. It was only a two-day event and despite being somewhat inexperienced he showed great potential by coming fifth overall. This encouraged him to greater achievement and he competed at every opportunity. All was not rosy though. He was injured in a crash in Ennis and spent some time recovering in a Limerick hospital. By 1956 Paudie was in his prime. He captained the victorious Kerry team in the Rás that year, taking the individual award, the King of the Mountains Award as well as the team award. The National Cycling Association (N.C.A) was impressed and nominated Paudie to represent Ireland at the Melbourne Olympics along with Flanagan and Gerrard. But there was a hitch. The N.C.A represented cyclists North and South - all of Ireland - but was not, itself, recognised by the Olympic Committee. The Olympic Committee did recognise the Irish Organisation of Cyclists whose members were from the 26 counties only. So the N.C.A would not be allowed to compete, officially, in the Olympics. Undaunted, and encouraged by massive support, both financial and otherwise, Paudie and Gerrard set off for Australia. They flew from Shannon to the Azores, then on to Boston, New York, Chicago and arrived in San Francisco where they linked up with Flanagan. The trio went island-hopping across the Pacific to Sydney and eventually arrived, exhausted, in Melbourne. They were given a warm reception at the airport by the Irish Association of Australia and were whisked away to a five-star hotel. There they were royally treated while they recovered from the journey and prepared for the race. Paudie was shocked out of his reverie by the sudden invasion of the Olympic track by reporters and cameramen who had spotted the Irish-

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Beachaire ar an Imeall

‘Sí Naomh Gobnait an pátrún atá ag beachairí agus, mar a tharlaíonn sé, is í atá mar phátrún ar Pharóiste Dhún Chaoin ar imeall an Aigéin Atlantaigh i gCorca Dhuibhne, Co. Chiarraí. Tá cónaí orm ann le breis agus daichead bliain anois agus dob é Mícheál Ó Dubhshláine, an múinteoir áitiúil, a mheall mé chun coirceog d’fháil agus tosnú ar chaitheamh aimsire agus ábhar spéise a bheidh agam go dtí deireadh mo shaoil. Is cuimhin liom go rabhas neirbhíseach agus aineolach nuair a thosnaíos ar dtúis agus is mó cealg a chuir na beacha ionam toisc go rabhas ciotach agus i gcónaí fé dheabhadh ach do chuas i dtaithí ar na nósanna agus ar na himeachtaí sa choirceog. D’fhoghlaimíos chomh maith conas na comharthaí a léamh ón aimsir agus ós na beacha agus níor chuas in aice leo gan an gléas deataigh lasta go láidir. Ní hé Dún Chaoin an áit is fearr in Éirinn le haghaidh beacha mar níl fásra róleathan anseo. Tá go leor fiúise agus seamair ins na goirt, agus aiteann agus fraoch ar na cnoic ach níl puinn crann ag fás toisc go bhfuilimid buailte go minic ag stoirmeacha ón bhfarraige, rud a chuireann cuid mhaith salainn san aer. Le cúig mbliana anuas bhí roinnt deacrachtaí agam mar bheachaire. Thosnaigh sé le drochaimsir a chuir bac ar na beacha dul amach ag lorg bídh agus a d’fhág coirceog nó dhó lag, in ainneoin an tsiúcra a thugas dóibh, agus i mbaoghal ós na foichí. Níl aon rud chomh truamhéileach le coirceog lag faoi ionsaí ag foichí agus ag bumbóga agus a fhios agat go bhfuil an cath caillte. Thánamar as sin agus an chéad bhliain eile, fágadh coirceog folamh gan aon chúis. Ní hé go rabhadar marbh timpeall na háite ach bhíodar imithe agus go leor bídh fós ann dóibh. Bhí sé amhlaidh in áiteanna eile ar fud na hEorpa. Sa deireadh, dhá bhliain ó shoin, bhíos gan aon choirceog agus bhíos idir dhá chomhairle ar cheart dom éirí as ar fad nó tosnú arís leis an méid taithí agus eolais a bhí fachta agam thar na mblianta. Bheartaíos ar ath-thosnú agus do chuireas fios ar dhá bhanríon ó Galtee Honey Farms. Thánadar agus do bhíos an-mhórálach as an dá fheithid bhreátha, shláintiúla a tháinig tríd an bpost agus a shocraigh síos go fonnmhar ar chósta thiar na hÉireann. Faraoir, níor mhair ceann acu ach sé mhí de bharr easpa cothabhála agus d’éag an bhanríon eile bliain ina dhiaidh gan aon chúis ach, b’fhéidir, an galar nua seo, neamhord cliseadh cóilíneachta (CCD). D’fhágas an choirceog dheireanach amuigh fé’n aer le gach rud istigh inti agus, gan aon choinne, do tháinig saithe ó áit lasmuigh de Dhún Chaoin agus do bhogadar isteach agus thosnaíodar ag obair ar an bpointe. Anois, bhíos tosnaithe arís le beacha ón gceantar agus dheineas deimhin de go raibh go leor bídh acu don gheimhreadh. Ní theastaíonn uaim scarúint le mo chairde an uair seo. Tá obair agus, uaireanta, briseadh croí ag baint le beachaireacht ach tá buntáistí go leor ann freisin agus nílim ag caint ar mhil amháin. Tá saol na mbeach chomh spéisiúil agus i gcónaí tá an mhíorúilt ón ubh go dtí an larbha go dtí an pupa go dtí an fheithid. Tá an oiread le foghlaim ós na beacha mar gheall ar an dtimpeallacht - cad iad na bláthanna is maith leo, cé’n dath pailín a thagann ó cé’n planda, cé’n sórt giúmar atá ar an mbanríon. An buntáiste is mó, is dóigh liom, ná go gcaitheann tú dul i ngleic leis an nádúr agus go gcaitheann tú díriú ní amháin ar chúraimí an lae ach ar na tréithe is bunúsaí atá ann agus atá ag forbairt leis na milliúin bliain. Anuas ar sin, tá toradh na hoibre agat i bhfoirm meala agus céarach atá chomh blasta agus chomh maith agus is féidir a bheith.

Sea tá Lá l’Bríde tagtha agus imithe agus an aimsir fhliuch fhuar fheannaideach linn coitianta. Mairg a thabharfadh páirceanna feirme air féin. Tá an talamh ar maos le huisce ach is dócha gur cheart dúinn a bheith buíoch nuair a chuimhnímíd ortha siúd go bhfuil srutháin uisce isteach agus amach ina dtithe, a gcuid foráiste loitithe, caoire agus ba gan bia seachas ‘an paca’ agus gan aon chaoi acu pingin árachais a fháilt. Déarfar leat gur é ardú ar theocht na cruinne is bun leis an aimsir a bheith chomh míchuíbhseach. Is dócha gur b’ea. Ach is léir gur í an tsuthaíocht chun airgid seachas todhchaí a gclann agus clann a gclainne is mó tinnis dóibh. Is baolach go gcaithfidh cách cúbadh chucha féin, nó beidh an bháisteach níos troime agus na gálai níos treise. Tá eagla tóirní ag teacht ar cheannairí tíortha ar fuaid an domhain ach is baolach ná fuil aon tslí go bhféadfai an annaithe a chuir ar gcúl go dtí seo agus ní dócha go mbeidh, ach más déanach féin é, ní ró-dhéanach fós é. Ach mura gcuireann na cumhachtaí móra chuige an teocht a mhoilliú róstfar a mbeidh fágtha don gcine dhaonna. Tá súil agam go mbeidh beart mar a mbriathair ag na cumhachtaí seo agus má bhíonn an gniómh dáiríre saorfar furmhór don gcine dhaonna ó mhór thubaist. Chonaicís mar a bhíothas le blianta ag tarrac na gcos le tuilte na Sionna a chur ó dhoras ach más amhlaidh a bheidh i dtaobh na mara is mó san baile beag agus mór a bheidh fé uisce. Tá gaisce déanta fadó ag an Ísiltír agus má ta fallaí móra cosanta meaithe ag ‘Trump’ le pobal Mheiriceá a shábháil ó ‘thruailliú’ daonna, nach ceart duinne bheith ag faire amach dos na haiteanna ar a bhfuil an fharraige ag bagairt?

an gá a bheith cliste? Glactar go bhfuil triúr ‘slán sábhailte’ agus go mbeidh an chuid eile ag sciolladh a chéile ceann ag lorg ceann don dá cheann a bheidh fágtha. Táim go laidir don tuairim cé hiad an cúigear a toghfar, ach níl sé i gceist an rún san a scaoileadh le aon duine. Más cearrbhach tú tá an chaoi anois agat ar airgead maith a dhéanamh. Vóta.

Tá súil agam más féidir leat go gcaithfir do vóta san olltoghchán fiú más duine thú ná fuil sásta. Is mó tir ná fuil aon cheart vóta acu agus siad a bheadh sásta dá mbeadh caoi acu a rogha rialtas a thoghadh. Is fiú cuimhneamh go bhfuil deis ag gnáth phobal na hÉireann a rogha Rialtas a roghnú. D’eascair ré nua as Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916 agus is mó duine bocht a fuair bás ar shon na saoirse atá againn. Murach iad agus a lean iad, bheimís fós ag caint fé ‘Home Rule’. Sea fágfam é mar scéal go fóill. Mar a dúrt thuas ní ró-fhada uainn lá na cinniúna nó lá an olltoghcháin. An babtha seo is aon dáilcheantar amháin an contae ar fad. Tá chúig shuíochán i gceist. Iad siúd go néireódh leo beidh contae mór fairsing acu le freastal air. Dar liom ná fuil aon chiall na réasún leis. Mharódh an síor mhór thaisteal capall. Ná fuil sé ina am an toghcheantar aon tsuíochán a tharrac chugainn. Gan dabht ní thuigeann lucht na gcathrach an ídé atátar á tabhairt ar TD tuaithe. Bíodh ciall againn mar is daoine daonna na TD chomh maith le aon duine againn agus tá ceart acu a gcúram a dhéanamh gan a bheith á ndíbirt ar fuaid contaethe mar Maigh Eó, Tír Chonaill, Tiobrad Árann.

Help for people who have been flooded Question My house was flooded and badly damaged. What help can I get?

Answer The Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme provides means-tested emergency financial help immediately following flooding. The Government has not set a limit on the amount that can be paid to an individual household under this scheme. The amount paid depends on how severe the damage is and your ability to meet these costs. The scheme covers:

tance Scheme, you can apply to have your 2016 Local Property Tax (LPT) payment deferred (even you do not qualify Project4:Layout 1 if 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1for deferral under the normal criteria). Contact the LPT Helpline on 1890 200 255 to make the relevant arrangements. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has information on cleaning a home after flooding and dealing with the psychological effects of flooding. The Office of Public Works (OPW) has a website, flooding.ie, that gives informa-

tion about what to do before, during and after a flood. There are two publications giving details of the help available: Leaflet – Schemes Available For People Affected by Recent Flooding Booklet – Government Assistance For People Affected by Flooding

You can get the leaflets on the welfare.ie website or from your local Citizens Information Centre.

1. Emergency income support payments. 2. Damage to your home and its essential contents, such as carpets, flooring, furniture and household appliances and bedding. 3. Structural damage may also be considered. The Department of Social Protection also provides exceptional and urgent needs payments which can help in the aftermath of a flood.

Dingle outreach: 3rd Tuesday of every month in the old C.B.S Monastry Building , John Street
