Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 8th March will be the Italian comedy-drama film ‘Youth’ written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. It is the director’s second English language film, and stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as best friends who reflect on their lives while holidaying in the Swiss Alps. It is a story of the eternal struggle between age and youth, the past and the future, life and death, commitment and betrayal. The cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, and Jane Fonda who all shine in this gorgeously filmed and beautifully acted film with an impressive array of seasoned veterans combining their cinematic might. The following week on Tuesday 15th March the feature will be the winner of the Best Film at this year’s Oscars ‘Spotlight’. Starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Stanley Tucci the film tells the story of The Boston Globe’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters as it delved into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church. Their year-long investigation uncovered a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. 4 West Kerry Live

The college plans to further invest in its already high-tech ICT infrastructure to ensure that they remain the pioneers of ICT in education. Whether you are a pro cyclist, a novice, a granny or a toddler, there is a route on this cycle for you and your family. There are three routes to choose from. The 60Km & 40Km routes circle the scenic Caragh Lake, pass through Blackstones Bridge, Lough Acoose and then on to Glencuttane or Beaufort before arriving back at the Community College for some well deserved complimentary refreshments. The 12Km route is a nice one for the younger members of the family which heads towards Glounaguillagh National School before turning back to the Community College via Groyne Cross and Ardmoniel. Louis Murchan BPS 2016 The postman is busy these days and not that he is not required to deliver political handouts, will be even busier in the coming weeks delivering vital information to you. The most important letter received recently was fro the Department of Agriculture informing all successful GLAS I and II applicants that from this year 2016, their BPS (formerly SPS) must be submitted on line by 15th May. This may cause worry, but don’t let it, as you may not be aware but you are registered on line. How do we know that? If you made a GLAS application, you had to register your name, herd number, and associate details with the Department, so it is now simply a need to contact your advisor, requesting that he apply on-line, on your behalf. Don’t be complacent and assume that he is going to, or has done it. Ensure that it is done. If it’s not lodged by the 15th May Deadline, penalties will be incurred, and it is you that will pay. There is plenty of time and your advisor will have you down for inclusion, but things do go wrong, people get sick, they say the wrong thing, giving the wrong impression and someone gets left behind. Don’t let that happen. Paper applications have not even been posted yet, but the onus is on you. DON’T FORGET. GLAS Plans The postman is also busy delivering your GLAS plan. Not before time, as the deadline for most actions in 31st March, (Wild Bird Cover being an exception with a 31st May Deadline). These plans can only be printed and therefore issued by the Department, explaining why your advisor didn’t present you with one up to now. Maps should be included but it is reported that they have not been included in some plans received. While this is an inconvenience, they will follow, so don’t despair. If you are waiting to know where exactly you need to position certain actions such as bird, bat or bee boxes, bee sand habitat, traditional orchards, you should prepare the boxes, etc and once the maps are received, be ready to erect them. The Department must accept some responsibility for thois delay, so just be ready to carry out the work. That is all that you can do. As in previous issues, below is a brief account of the objectives and requirement of some of the more popular measures. Wild Bird Cover This was one of the silver bullet measures that automatically moved an applicant from a Tier 3 to Tier 2 applicant, thus ensuring their acceptance into the scheme. It’s objective is to sow a seed crop mix that provides a food sources and winter cover for farmland birds and other fauna. Wild Bird Cover is a spring-sown crop that is left un-harvested over winter to provide food for farmland birds. Successfully establish a wild bird cover by sowing a suitable seed mix as set out below by 31 May 2016. This action must be delivered on a full LPIS plot which was previously selected by you and is clearly marked on the map and it must remain in the same place for the duration of the GLAS contract. Crop must be grown on lands capable of producing a cereal and kale crop. The crop must remain in situ until 15th of March the following year. In the year in which parcels have been fully replanted, livestock may enter the parcel from 15th March to planting time to aid in the decomposition of the trash. The 1 year mix must contain a cereal (either oats or triticale) and at least one species from the following: oilseed rape, linseed and mustard. The two year mix must contain a cereal (either oats or triticale) and kale. Where the 2 year mix is sown, half the plot is sown with cereal and half the plot is sown in kale. Do not sow it in alternative strips as the cereal must be resown in year 2 while the kale will be remaining in situ. While Drilling is the preferred sowing method, broadcasting of the seed is permitted. If broadcasting, increase the seed rates by between one third (for smaller seeds) and a half (for larger seeds), and roll immediately post sowing. Pre-sowing weed control can be used but pesticides cannot be applied post sowing. However the spot treatment with herbicide for noxious weeds and invasive species is permitted. The plot must be fenced off and stock-proofed from establishment to the 15th 12 West Kerry Live
No harvesting can take place. Consideration should be given to growing the crop adjacent to cover (e.g. beside hedgerows or near woodland or scrub). This may also be grown along a stream or river where it can have the dual benefit of acting as a buffer margin. In the One Year Seed Mix the rates of seed application are 75 kg/ ha of oats or triticale and 15 kg/ha of linseed or mustard. You can also sow 15 kg of oil seed rape (OSR) with the same rate of triticale. The Two year Mix is more complicated, involving subdividing the plot required rotational sowing, which is not recommended in West Kerry. Protection of Watercourses from Bovines The objective of this measure is to to protect water quality by excluding bovines from watercourses. Livestock grazing along a watercourse can lead to direct pollution of water with urine and faeces which could mean pathogens entering the water. This can destroy aquatic habitats and lower the quality of water that could potentially enter the water that humans use. Excluding bovines from watercourses will prevent the breakdown of vegetation on the banks of the watercourse. It will also prevent pollution of the watercourse from bovines. Tier 1 and 2 applicants in high status water sites and/or vulnerable status water sites had to select this option to ensure entry to the scheme| Watercourses on commonage land and/or rented land are not eligible for this action and do not have to be fenced. All watercourses are identified and marked on the GLAS online mapping system. To be eligible for this action, participants must have had bovines on their holding in 2013 and for the duration of the GLAS contract and all grass fields contiguous to the watercourse(s) must be fenced for the duration of the contract. Parcel(s) chosen for the Protection of Watercourses from Bovines action must remain in grass for the period of the contract. Any tillage fields on these holdings which are contiguous to the watercourse and are converted to grass during the GLAS contract must be fenced if livestock are ever in the parcels. If a farmer comes into GLAS through an action other than HSWS or VSWS as they don’t have bovines at the time of entering GLAS; they must fence all watercourses in future years should there be bovines on the holding during the period of the GLAS contract. If the watercourse is in a designated SAC and fencing is not allowed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service this action cannot be selected. Participants must have had bovines on their holding in 2013 and retain them for the duration of the GLAS contract. Bovines must be owned. Fence off watercourse(s) on GLAS contract lands. All watercourses must be fenced a minimum of 1.5 metres from the top of the bank of the watercourse to exclude bovines by 31st December 2015. The fencing must be stockproof, fit for purpose and be undertaken with permanent stakes. Livestock drinking points are not permitted. An alternative water supply must be provided for livestock. Where the fencing of watercourses for bovines is a priority action, a derogation may be sought from Johnstown Castle not to fence the watercourse on parcels with breeding waders and/or Geese and Swans. The Derogation must be sought and approved by 31st December 2015. Where a derogation is approved, the participant will remain eligible for GLAS but will receive no payment for the fencing of watercourse action for the lengths concerned within the derogation. Traditional Dry Stone Wall Maintenance This Measure aims to maintain and enhance the network of traditional freestanding dry stone walls stonewalls, increase biodiversity and enhance the visual landscape. Stonewalls are an important feature in the landscape. Walls offer shelter to livestock, protection to wildlife and are an important habitat for both flora and fauna. Dry stone walls are walls built using stones that sit comfortably without the use of mortar and constructed in a style traditional to the locality. Where the GLAS participant is also in the Burren Farming for Conservation Programme and is in receipt of the stone wall payment, they are not eligible for this action. Stone walls entered for this action must be accessible and visible for maintenance. Walls with scrub on or against them are not eligible for payment. External farm stonewalls entered for this action are payable at half rate except for external stone walls that front onto a public roadway, private laneway or waterbody where the farmer has control over both sides of the wall for maintenance. Internal wall lengths can only be counted once and must be maintained on both sides.
www.westkerrylive.ie
The requirements for this measure are as follows: Maintain traditional freestanding dry stone walls by replacing stones that may have fallen off the top of the wall or repair walls if/where stones have fallen down. Walls that have fallen or partly collapsed must be rebuilt in the same style as other walls in the locality. Walls built with mortar are not eligible for the action. The location and length (metres) must be identified on the LPIS plot(s) and marked on the map submitted. The minimum amount of stonewall for maintenance is 10 m and this must be in one contiguous length while the A maximum allowed is 4,000 metres on any one the holding. All walls entered for this action must be maintained from the commencement of the contract to the end of the GLAS contract.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary
Would love to take the family to France this year. Time goes by so quickly that the kids will be grown up and gone before we realise it. Wrote to Francois P. who lives in Paimpol, in Brittany. He’s a lighthouse keeper there and comes to Kerry fairly often to buy naomhógs from Eddie Hutch. He may suggest some place to stay near Roscoff or Paimpol.

Wednesday., March 5.
Saturday, March 1, 1986. Called to Pat O’Connor at Knocknahow looking for firewood but he hadn’t any so he came with me to the forestry at Baileríoch looking for Pat Begley, who also supplies wood, but no sign of him. Ireland beaten by England 25-20 at Twickenham. Both teams left the field at half-time, which is unprecedented, due to the bitterly cold conditions. France beat Wales at Cardiff.
Sunday, March 2. Coming out of Mass I overheard someone say that Pedlars Lake was frozen so after lunch we drove up the Conor Pass and parked at the frozen waterfall below the lake. The climb was easy as the ground was bone dry. We ventured cautiously on to the ice-covered lake, half expecting it to crack at any moment but after a few minutes we were confident enough to walk three-quarters of the way across without mishap. There was an extraordinary sight in the middle of the lake. Gene Courtney, the baker, was trying to break through the ice with a pick-axe - with little success! There were some eerie sounds coming from the ice and these were magnified by the corrie’s sheer cliffs. It’s unlikely we’ll see the likes of this again in our lifetime. Met Jack Walsh, the chemist, and Vincent O’Sullivan from the bank on the way down to the car.
The seats are being sold off from the church in Ballyferriter. Reports say that some wealthy benefactor has offered to replace all centre-aisle seating for Fr. Kissane. The old seats are going for £8 to £10 each. Will try to get one - would make a nice garden bench.
Thursday, March 6. It will be some time before grass starts growing this spring after all the cold weather and the drying winds. The whole countryside is burnt brown. I heard a story that some farmer made hay from his dried grass lately. There have been some serious forest fires in Cork recently - incredible for February and March. Our ESB bill for Jan/Feb was over £80. It just keeps rising nand we’re told that inflation is falling.
Friday, March 7. There are no naomhógs out training for the regattas so far this year but last year and in 1984 we were all hard at training in February.
Saturday, March 8. The Youth club members were busily painting some cartoon figures on the wall of a house in Dykegate Lane this afternoon.
Monday, March 3.
Sunday, March 9.
Paddy Sheehy of Baileristeen had a close call today. He was drawing trunking with a tractor and trailer along the high road on the side of Ballybowler Hill. When he attempted to turn on the narrow road the trailer went over the edge and crashed down the hillside, bouncing off rocks and landed on the other dirt track at the bottom of the hill which you can see when driving up the Conor Pass. He was lucky that the tractor didn’t get pulled over too.
Took the kids and some neighbour’s kids to the cinema after lunch to see the Disney film ‘Herbie rides again’. The proceeds go to the boys primary school fund. We had around 120 kids at £1.50 each thanks to a generous gesture by Michael Francie to make the cinema available free.
Tuesday, March 4. Rain at last! The first for six weeks and more rain fell last night than in all of February, according to the Met office. Got some holiday brochures from Galvins travel agency in John Street.

Monday, March 10. There are reports that the remains of the seven astronauts from the doomed Challenger space shuttle will be recovered from the sea bed off the Florida coast bringing more trauma but, at the same time, closure for the families. Were they still alive while their crew cabin plunged towards the Atlantic ocean, from a height of twelve miles, at 200 miles per hour?

Enduring Appeal Of The Rocket Tadhg Evans
His performances since then have been sublime more regularly than at any other point of his career, and it’s been very satisfying to watch him embolden claims that he’s the greatest snooker player we’ve ever seen. Yet even a fifth world title hasn’t been enough to silence nonsensical accusations of underachievement. Yes, O’Sullivan was good enough to win a dozen World Championships, but his bipolarity, coupled with the pressure shamelessly heaped upon him, made it far more likely that he wouldn’t win any. Those who refer to him as an underachiever will surely never stand further from the truth at any other point in their lives. Stop holding on to the day that he walked out of a first-to-nine at 1-5 down against Stephen Hendry, something that he’d never done before and hasn’t done since. Don’t let his claims of dislike for the game, as regular as they are meaningless, sully your judgement. When it has mattered most, O’Sullivan has, more often than not, performed admirably under the severest expectations. His mental strength is as amazing as any other facet of his incomparable game.
When it comes to describing Ronnie O’Sullivan, you could easily be accused of resorting to clichés for using extraordinary adjectives such as brilliant, exceptional, ingenious and remarkable – how’s that for a compliment? There’s no need to praise O’Sullivan’s performances at Cardiff last week, though they were ludicrously brilliant even by the outstanding standards the Rocket has been setting for 27 years now. Instead, let’s hone in on one of the very few aspects of O’Sullivan’s game that’s ever criticised – his mental strength. No sport tests a man’s gumption as thoroughly as snooker, and it’s an examination that the Chigwell potter has regularly been accused of failing. On occasions, he has. O’Sullivan, like all who make a success of themselves, has a lot of detractors, and citing this supposed fault is normally the popular choice for those who try to keep their envy of the Londoner a secret (they fail horribly, by the way). As a snooker player, O’Sullivan genuinely has no weakness – and his mental strength might even be his most impressive attribute. Reread that last sentence if you need to, but I assure you there’s been no typo in this piece thus far. Let’s go back to what we said in our third paragraph: snooker is tough on the mind. Ding Junhui’s almost as brilliant a break-builder as O’Sullivan, and his proficiency for tactical play is enviable in its own right. He’s never won the World Championship, though he’s better than most who have. He hasn’t even come close – probably because a lot of people in China would really like him to win it. That’s not meant as a dig -- Ding’s human. O’Sullivan has yet to prove that he is. He’s been severely scrutinised ever since his precocious talent first came to light over thirty years ago. He overcame those first encounters with attention and won the UK Championship, snooker’s second most revered tournament, in 1993. One of his first acts as a seventeen-yearold champion was to visit his imprisoned father. He was expected to return at some point with the World Championship trophy. He would, eventually, in 2001. A communal sigh of relief reverberated as he potted the brown that ended one of snooker’s most anxious waits. Though ‘finally’ was the prevailing reaction, it’s actually remarkable that O’Sullivan, for all of his copious talent, has ever faced a match-ball on mayday at the Crucible. It was extraordinarily unfair to ask so much of someone burdened by a condition as unrelentingly mean as bipolar disorder. Plenty have sneered at O’Sullivan over the years on the basis of him being ‘mentally weak’ in comparison to his two greatest rivals, Stephen Hendry and John Higgins. Many took delight from the Rocket’s unhappiness in 2011 when his form vanished as he fell behind Higgins in terms of world titles claimed, before it was widely reiterated that O’Sullivan was a midget in the terms of psychological strength. 18 West Kerry Live

Scores were at a minimum in the first half with the sides level at 3 points each at half time despite the good conditions. Thomas Ladden, David McAssey and Terry O'Sullivan scored for Keel while Darren Houlihan, Paul O'Sullivan and Mikey Houlihan replied for Cromane. Garvey’s SuperValu, Dingle Wins Best SuperValu In Ireland Award Garvey’s SuperValu in Dingle has picked up the award for best SuperValu in Ireland, scooping the ‘SuperValu Store of the Year’ title for 2016. The store beat off stiff competition from 11 other finalists to receive the much coveted accolade at the SuperValu National Conference which was held in the Malton Hotel, Killarney recently. The team from Garvey’s SuperValu were presented with their award by Martin Kelleher, SuperValu Managing Director, Michael Morgan, SuperValu Sales Director and Eoin MacManus, Director of Three Business, the competition sponsors. Winning this title recognises the exceptional standards of the Dingle store as SuperValu stores throughout the country were assessed and adjudicated by independent completion judge, Paul Ellison to determine the most deserving winner. The audits focused on product range and innovation, store presentation, fresh food offering, customer care and store quality and hygiene standards; with SuperValu Dingle surpassing all SuperValu stores nationwide within these criteria.
On receipt of the award, Jim Garvey paid tribute to store manager Kevin O’Connor and the Dingle team. He acknowledged their passion and enthusiasm for the business and their dedication to providing a unique shopping experience for their customers. “In 2015 we invested €3million and completely revamped our store demonstrating our long-standing commitment to the community and economy in Dingle. Our staff of 73 embraced this change and the store is exceeding all expectations. We have been serving the community of Dingle since 1935 and this award is a real testament of having a great team and a store that we are all proud of.” Speaking at the awards, Martin Kelleher, Managing Director, SuperValu congratulated SuperValu, Dingle and said, “Each year, we face the difficult decision in choosing the SuperValu Store of the Year winner from a group of very strong finalists. However, Garvey’s SuperValu in Dingle stood out, as it’s a superb store in the heart of Dingle with an exceptional team demonstrating our true band ethos of Real Food, Real People.”

Tips For Helping Toddlers With A Bedtime Routine you just spring something on them they may get frustrated.
Anne Healy
3. After the ten minutes get your child to get into their pyjamas and brush their teeth. 4. If your child resists going to bed you could try saying ‘Seems like you are not happy about going to bed right now’? (This comment helps him/her understand their feelings and sets the seeds for emotional intelligence) ‘But it is my job to make sure that you get enough sleep to keep you healthy and strong! So now we are going to have your story before you go to sleep’. This comment helps him/her to know why you are getting them to do something that they do not want to do. She /he also hears that they get a story and then fall asleep and that helps them grow strong and healthy. So you have completed a cycle. What may have started with frustration on both your parts can end in a calm child and a calm parent!
Cartún: Dómhnal Ó Bric Fact A toddler’s world is centred on getting his or her needs met. When they want something they want it now! If they do not want to do something … well they do not want to do it. They are not developmentally ready to see things from someone else’s point of view! Of course that does not mean that they can do as they wish. There are ways that can help you and your child and you to move out of what can become a stressful situation to a win- win situation. Bed time is often a time when anxieties arise for some children. They just want to be near you for you to help them regulate their feelings. And at times they want to test the limits!
Remember Do not answer back to all his/her reasoned comments about staying up. Repeat again that it is your job to keep them strong and healthy. This is something that children will relate to as it makes them feel safe and understood. It is important to keep trying this response for as long as takes to change the bedtime routine to being a positive experience for all of you. Try not to get dispirited if things do not change overnight! We are all creatures of habit! The tips I recommend above are for children who are experiencing what I call typical bedtime issues. However if children are very distressed or frightened about going to bed over a long period of time it is important to try and check out what may be the reason for their fears and anxieties with a health care professional. . Anne Healy has an MA from the University of York in Play Therapy and is a Parent Advisor. She has worked with children and families for over thirty years. She lives and works in Dingle. If you wish to visit my website for more tips or to contact me it is www.mindfulparentingadivce.ie or call me on 087 2486421.
Common night time situation! Parents will often report to me that getting children to bed can be stressful. Requests by parents to children to go to bed are often meet with…. ‘Can we have another ten minutes’ ‘can I play just one more game, ‘can I see another few minutes of the programme’, ‘it is not fair’, one more story ! I ask parents on a scale between one and ten about how they feel when this happens. Number one being calm and number ten been frustrated. ‘About six on a good night and on a night when I am tired it could rise to nine’ is a common answer’!
DINGLE PARTY CASTLES
So here is what I suggest to parents! Prepare 1. Check how you are feeling. If you feel stressed and tired try to acknowledge this and tell yourself kindly, to calm down. As you know, if you are stressed your child will pick this up! A great tip is to do what I call ‘ a sacred pause’! Just take a deep breath inwards and exhale. It takes a fraction of a second to do this and it is scientifically proven that our brain calms down when we just ‘pause’ for breath. In addition you are more connected to yourself again. Some of us may need to take a few extras breaths if we are wired up after a busy day! 2. At ten minutes to bed time say to your child you have ten minutes left to do whatever it is they are doing. If they do not understand the concept of time show them the hands on the clock. Children like to be prepared for things…. As you all know if 32 West Kerry Live

“Shin Splints” - Which Type Have You ? Eddie O’ Grady ‘’Shin splints’’ is a catch-all term for shin pain either on the front outside part of the lower leg (anterior shin splints) or on the inside of the lower leg (medial shin splints). It is the curse of many athletes including runners, tennis players, dancers etc. Frequently the condition plagues novice runners who do not build their mileage gradually enough. It also affects seasoned runners who abruptly change their workout regimen, suddenly adding too much mileage, or switching from running on the flat to hills. The term mainly refers mainly to the following three conditions: 1. mini stress fractures within the tibia bone 2. chronic exertional compartment syndrome, 3. medial tibial stress syndrome. It is important to differentiate between the three for treatment. 1. Real ‘’shin splints’’ are mini stress fractures (splint-ers) within the tibia bone. With this condition pain is gradual in onset, getting worse with activity, and there is usually a history of an increase in training intensity. Pain may occur with walking, at rest, or even at night in bed. Treatment for this condition involves rest for about eight weeks from running to allow the little stress fractures to heal. You should be able to keep up fitness levels by cycling, swimming etc., as these exercises are low impact. You may need to look at lower limb biomechanics, running style, training practices etc. to prevent recurrence . 2. Chronic exertional compartment syndrome is defined as increased pressure within a closed fibro-osseous space(like the space the
tibia and fibula), causing reduced blood flow and tissue perfusion(perfusion is the process of a body delivering blood to a capillary bed in its biological tissue), which subsequently leads to ischemic pain(pain due to restriction of blood supply, and thus oxygen and nutrients to tissue) and possible permanent damage to tissues of the compartment. The syndrome is frequently bilateral (both legs). Typical features of the condition are absence of pain at rest, with increasingly achy pain and a sensation of tightness in the shins upon exertion. Symptoms usually resolve or significantly dissipate within several minutes of resting. Anyone can develop the condition, but it is more common in athletes who participate in activities that involve repetitive impact, such as running. Sometimes Chronic exertional compartment syndrome may respond to deep tissue work and myofascial release of the structures involved. Changing your chosen activity to one involving less impact may also help. Surgery may be used as a last resort to relieve the pressure. It involves operating on the inelastic tissue encasing each muscle compartment (fascia). Methods include either cutting open the fascia of each affected compartment (fasciotomy) or actually removing part of the fascia (fasciectomy).
analgesics. Again switching to low impact activities such as swimming or cycling can keep a sports person active during recovery. For treatment, the entire calf should be assessed. The use of myofascial release techniques along with proper hands-on deep tissue work concentrating on thickened muscle fibres of the soleus, flexor digitorum longus and tibialis posterior adjacent to their bony attachments can prove effective. Dry needling and electro-acupuncture can also benefit recovery. Arch supporting orthotic insoles designed to reduce impact forces, correct flat-footedness and overpronation during running can help prevent recurrence and facilitate recovery by offloading affected structures.
3. Medial tibial stress syndrome is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your tibia. A common cause of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pes planus (flat feet) or over-pronation of the foot during running. This puts increased strain on the Tibialis Posterior and soleus muscles leading to chronic traction at their insertions onto the periosteum on the posterior inner border of the tibia, producing pain in this area. Mild swelling in the area may also occur. The pain may be sharp and razor-like or dull and throbbing, occurring both during and after exercise, and aggravated by touching the sore spot. Initial treatment involves rest, ice, Grants Available

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs
Deirdre Daly Wood Betony / Stachy’s betonica Parts Used; dried aerial parts Family; Lamiaceae During my studies one herb would stand out and become flavour of the month within the class. This love affair with the herb would last at least a few weeks and would then become part of our herbal pharmacy or in herbal speak Materia Medica. At the moment I am going through a wood betony phase and find myself turning to this herb a lot when prescribing tinctures and herbs. Perhaps this draw to the herb is symptomatic of the time of year when we are all slowly coming out of hibernation after a long wet winter when the mind and body though willing to embrace the spring finds it is still a bit sluggish. This is where wood betony comes into its own working on both an energetic and a physiological level, calming the mind, lifting the spirit and clearing stagnation.
the nervous system particularly when taken over a period of time. Tea infusions are a good way to take any herb over the long-term and while wood betony can be drunk freely it should not be taken if pregnant as it is a uterine stimulant. In summary on an energetic level the herb frees energy trapped in the head and on a physiological level it clears congestion acting as an expectorant and reducing liver and kidney congestion. Stress related conditions such as tension and headaches can all be relieved with this herb and importantly mental exhaustion and over exertion especially where restlessness, insomnia and pain are factors. Wood betony is also an excellent remedy for painful menses and can help ease spasmodic pain when cramping occurs.
Tincture 2-6ml three times a day. Safety considerations: Not to be taken during pregnancy Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted by email at: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109
Preparations and dosage; Tea infusions 8-12g or 1-2 teaspoons per cup three times daily for therapeutic uses.
Betony is found throughout England and Wales but is rare in Ireland and classified as endangered and protected by the 1999 Flora Protection Order. There are a few species of Stachys with names such as hedge woundwort S. sylvatica, which is very common here and appears in my garden every summer, field woundwort S. arvensis and marsh woundwort S. paulstris. And though these herbs have some medicinal value they are not interchangeable with Stachy’s betonica. This herb can be cultivated from seed and apart from its medicinal value, is a pretty herb to have in the garden. Wood betony is mainly a nervine remedy and is good for all stress related conditions. It is a great herb for the over analytical and restless mind, the latter, which I find takes hold every year with the arrival of spring when thoughts of ‘spring cleaning’ is foremost, be it in the garden, the house, the workplace or all three! It is excellent for both tension headaches and migraine and for nerve pain particularly facial and cranial e.g. trigeminal. In terms of clearing stagnation, which can be stored up over the winter months when we are inactive, betony will support the liver and kidney clearing congestion in these organs. It also has a warming and expectorant influence on respiratory problems, such as, coughs brought on by damp weather and sinus congestion. Wood betony is a deeply restorative herb and long term use will help to tone

Teenagers’ Health Threatened by Mixed Messages Irene Ní Fhlannúra A study published by St. Andrew’s University, Scotland demonstrated that eating your “5-a-day” improves the appearance of skin tone. The research showed that just two extra portions of fruit and vegetables showed a detectable change in skin colour within the trial period of six weeks. The before and after photographs were quite dramatic showing glowing complexions, considering the short time frame and ease of implementing dietary change. The researchers concluded that appealing to the vanity of the nation may be a better strategy to promote healthy eating. “Knowing you are going to look more attractive in a few weeks may be more persuasive than the promise of health benefits later in life”. They have a point! On one hand, we are faced with shocking statistics about our teenagers - rising obesity levels and associated health risks, increased mental health problems, behavioral difficulties and climbing suicide rates on top of the usual plethora of skin problems, hormonal issues and body image concerns. On the other hand - teenagers are being encouraged by ambiguous advertising to eat the unhealthiest of foods and consume soft drinks that are only one sip away from poison! The marketing tactics of linking products with attractiveness, success, sex appeal and sporting prowess certainly influence teenagers to eat unhealthier food and drinks while the “good food” campaign is left on the side lines waving lettuce leaves at an uninterested audience.
ing, healthy skin and immune system. Found in meat, fish, wholegrains and pulses, low zinc levels may lead to skin problems, poor sexual health and frequent illnesses. For teenagers, the instant gratification and convenience of high sugar, high fat and high salt foods scream louder than benefits of a varied, healthy natural diet. To protect our youth now and in the future, change needs to occur not only in our diets but in the way we get the message out there. Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 086-1662562 Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com Personal Nutrition Plans for Weight Loss, Energy, Recovery & Health Laboratory Testing – Food Intolerance, Stool Analysis, Vitamin D and more “Awaken” Spring Health Weekend in Ballydavid, March 3rd -6th 2016
Strategies by health authorities have had no real impact on what teenagers choose to eat yet, year after year huge budgets are spent spinning out the same ineffective messages about diet and lifestyle for teenagers. Ironically, adolescents have greater nutritional needs than any other age-group in terms of calories, protein, vitamin, mineral and essential fatty acid requirements - yet sadly, many teenagers eat a poorer diet than most other social groups. As they go through an unrivalled phase of rapid physical growth, hormonal changes as well as great emotional and intellectual challenges - meeting the nutritional demands to fuel this period is crucial to maintain good health now as well as in later years. Most common deficiencies seen in teenagers’ diet include folate, iron, calcium, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin C and D as well as omega 3 and 6. Recommendations for iron intake for female teens is higher than for boys, as iron is lost each month during menstruation. Low iron levels may lead to tiredness, lack of energy and poor academic performance. Good sources of iron are found in red meat, offal, dark leafy greens, wholemeal bread and lentils. Tea, coffee, caffeine drinks and lack of vitamin C affect the absorption of iron - so not only are many girls not getting enough iron in the diet, poor absorption further reduces their intake. Folate and B vitamins are found in a wide range of whole natural foods - unprocessed meat, fish, wholegrains, pulses and seeds. B vitamins and folate work together in the body and are essential for growth and the proper development of a healthy nervous system, metabolism and body maintenance. Like vitamin C, B vitamins are depleted through storage, processing and food preparation. Smoking, alcohol, illness and stress deplete the body’s levels further. B vitamins do not store well in the body and therefore must be eaten everyday to maintain healthy levels. Vitamin C too, must be consumed every day as the body utilizes a lot of vitamin C everyday. Found in fresh, raw fruit and vegetables - it plays a protective role in the body maintaining immunity, building healthy connective tissue, bones and teeth. Vitamin C is easily lost through cooking and processing for example, fresh peas contain 25mg of vitamin C per 100g; canned peas only 1mg. Calcium - a major component of bone and teeth, is the mineral needed in greatest quantities. Peak bone mass occurs in late teens to early 20’s making calcium another crucial nutrient for long term health. Right now teenagers utilize calcium in muscle function, heart function, blood clotting and nerve function. Rich sources include dark leafy vegetables, sesame seeds, unprocessed cheese, yogurt and other dairy products. Vitamin D, magnesium and essential fatty acids are needed for its absorption. High protein intake can lead to calcium being lost - another consideration if taking protein supplements, which is increasing among male teens. Zinc is present throughout the body tissues and is essential for normal growth and development, for healthy reproductive system, wound heal38 West Kerry Live

Sóisir Cheann Sibéal 2016 Táimíd ag iarraidh cur leis an mbunchloch a leagamar síos anuraidh ó thaobh bunú “Cumann Sóisear” i gCeann Sibéal. Bhí breis agus leath chéad sóisear againn anuraidh a d’fhreastal ar cheachtanna agus/nó campa samhraidh. Tá súil againn go leanfaidh furmhór dóibh seo ar aghaidh agus go meallfaimíd leanaí nua chomh maith. Don chéad uair riamh, ghlac Captaein na Sóisear – Sibéal Ní Ógáin agus Jimí O Fiannachta páirt i “dTiomáint Isteach na gCaptaen”. Bhí ard mholadh ag teacht ós na baill mar gheall air seo, rud a thugann misneach agus spreagadh dúinn iná’r n-iarracht Roinn Sóisearach a bhunú i gCeann Sibéal. Tuigimíd go maith go bhfuil dúshlán romhainn sa chúram seo – beidh sé deacair sóisir a mhealladh agus a choimeád mar gheall ar a bhfuil de rogha acu maidir le gníomhaíochtaí spoirt eile. Ach má tá á’r gcumann le bheith rathúil amach anseo –tá cumann Sóisear, gníomhach, bríomhar riachtanach. Thar aon ní eile –nach deas an radharc é aghaidheanna óga, lán de sport agus ceol, a fheiscint ar na machairí galf i gCeann Sibéal? Tá cupla rud beartaithe againn chuige seo: •

Ceann Sibéal Juniors 2016 We are trying to build on the foundation which was laid down last year to set up a Junior Club in Ceann Sibéal. More than 50 juniors attended lessons and/or a summer camp. We hope that most of these will progress this year and we are also aiming to attract new children. For the first time our Junior Captains Sibéal Ní Ógáin and Jimí O Fiannachta took part in the Captains’ Drive In – this initiative brought great praise from our members. This gives us great hope that we have the support of the club in our efforts. We realise it is a formidable challenge to attract and maintain junior members but it is vital for the future of our club that we have a natural feeder system for membership, as well as giving us all a lift when we see young eager enthusiastic faces enjoying the wonderful game. We have some activities planned to this effect: •
Taster Day in the practice ground on Saturday 12th March
•
Golf Camp on 21st and 22nd March
•
Our main aim is that the children would have fun and enjoy the game
•
Small fun competitions when they have progressed
We hope to have a Junior Committee set up shortly who will coordinate these activities. Volunteers are welcome and no one will be over taxed. Everyone Welcome to KCFE Open Day There was once a time when students left the county in droves to do their PLC course in Cork and Limerick but, thanks to the vision of Kerry ETB, with the establishment in Tralee of Kerry College of Further Education (formerly Tralee Community College) students can now access a very broad range of post leaving certificate courses in a college setting without having to incur the cost of having to move to another county. Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) specialise in the provision of quality assured further education courses, otherwise known as PLC courses, offering certification at Level 5 and Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. ‘The courses at KCFE are designed to prepare students for work by giving them specific skills and training which enable them to find employment in a variety of career areas. The PLC also acts as a steppingstone to other third level qualifications at ITs and Universities. We have a very extensive list of links with colleges in Ireland and abroad. Our Guidance Counsellor Anne Doyle and Law lecturer Toireasa Ferris have developed even more progression links recently with UL and UCC allowing our PLC graduates to access courses there’ said Mary Murphy, College PRO.
The college enrolled 585 students at the beginning of this academic year. About 60% of the current student body come directly from Leaving Cert while the other 40% are mature people who are upskilling, changing career direction and most importantly pursuing courses which focus on enhancing employability by providing the student with the skills currently in demand by industry. The college is holding an Open Day on Wednesday 9th March from 11am-7pm at its college campus in Clash, Tralee. School leavers, their parents/guardians aswell as those mature people who are considering a return to education/training in order to gain a recognised qualification are welcome to pop in on the day. Two representatives from SUSI will be available in the college on the day to answer queries regarding grants. The application system for those wishing to secure an interview for a place at the college is now open online at www.kerryfe. ie and any queries regarding the Open Day or any aspect of what the college offers can be directed to the college office on 066 712 1741.

Gluten Free Hazelnut Cake
Keep an eye on the cake so it does not burn on the top, if this is happening place some tin foil over the top after twenty minutes.
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is an easy and delicious cake to bake and it’s suitable as cake with a coffee or as a dessert. It’s a variation of an Italian cake from Northern Italy. I have worked with an original recipe but here I have adapted the recipe to be gluten free with great success. If you want to really treat yourself melt some chocolate and pour it over the top.
Allow the cake to cool and to serve you can simply dust with icing sugar and serve with whipped cream or if you prefer you can soften some Nutella and spread generously over the cake. Enjoy!!!

Toast the hazelnuts on a dry pan over a medium heat - this should take about four minutes or so. Be careful at this stage not to burn the hazelnuts. Once they are ready place them in a grinder and grind until fine (if the skins are on them you can remove them by putting all of them on half of a tea towel, using the other half cover them and rub the hazelnuts, the skin will fall off easily once they are toasted). In a bowl mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and the ground hazelnuts. Whisk the eggs, butter, milk and the oil together and add to the dry ingredients until smooth. Would you like to join? Friday's at 2.00 pm til 4.00. Thank you to some people who won money, put it right back into the Kitty so that we can have a bus trip away during the summer. Members will be entitled to bus trips only if they attend 2weeks in every month of the year. We cannot afford people who only turn up once or twice a year, just to get a free holiday, that's not on. Hay bales wanted to prevent coastal erosion. Any condition! Round or square. Drop off at West End Hall or Maharabeg Cut. Donate please! It would only need a couple from each farmer to make a difference in the dunes. Sand Dunes are valuable because they protect our homes and businesses, enhance our quality of like and provide habitats for plants and wildlife. When sand dunes are damaged from storms ort human activity they can be repaired or restored. We can help speed up nature’s work by using bales, planting marram grass and using sand fences to collect blowing sand more rapidly. People can help by not driving, walking or camping in the dunes. We are doing what we can, now, while waiting for an environment Impact Assessment to determine the feasibility of rock armour. Kerry County Council is responsible for arranging this study. We as Castlegregory community must work together to achieve results. Painting Party – West End Hall March 19th & 25th @ 10am Refreshments will be served. Ar an nDomhnach seo caite bhí sinsir caide na Gaeltachta ar a dtriail i gcomórtas sraithe Chorca Dhuibhne leis An nDaingean. Bhuaidh an Daingean.
Dreancaide.
Rud amháin, bhí beart déanta ag cud dos na poiliteóirí a gcuid postaéirí agus abhar scríofa a bheith as Gaolainn sa Ghaeltacht. Cinnte bhí san déanta go foirfe ag cuid acu. Siad siúd a fuair léasadh teanga an
Caid. Is tráthúíl go bhfuil ‘an Marc’ sa chaid rud go rabhmair ag trácht ar, ní ró fhada ó shoin. Beidh mar chuid do chluichí caide ó thús 2017. Is maith an cinneadh é óir beidh na himreóirí ‘caide árd’, Lá Gaoithe’, an- shásta gan trácht ar an lucht féachana. Cad a mheasann tú fén mbeartas aos na mionúr a ísliú go 17 bliain agus aois na gcluichí fé 21 á n-ísliú go fiche bliain?

Ar an bhfaiche poilitíochta náisiúnta is deacair a rá cé a bheidh ina Thaoiseach. Deirim leat go meilfear na táinte uair a chloig ag iarraidh teacht ar fhoirmle réitigh. Tá FF ag cur asta á rá go bhfuil ‘mandate’ acu ón pobal. Tá ‘mandate’ dá gcuid féin acu, ach níl ceann mór a dhóthain fós acu! Seo iad na sáiteáin a bheidh á gcaitheamh thall is abhus. Gan amhras is ar a gcliú féin atá gach páirtí ag cuimhneamh, ach i ndeire na dála beidh ortha gníomh ar mhaithe leis an náisiún a dhéanamh. Is chuige sin a toghadh iad.
Turas Tamall ó shoin fuaireas scéal ó Choiste Féile i dTír Chonail go raibh dán dom chuid a bhí curtha chucha do chomortas filíochta a bhí á reachtáil acu, ar liosta. Bíodar ag súil go dtabharfainn na 360 míle suas orm fén le mo dhán a léamh’, mar a ndeintear más fíor ar ócáidí mar seo. Nach deas a bheitfeá ag spalpadh véarsaí i dTír Uasal Chonaill agus seans gan aon dath buaite agat. D’fhanas ‘ge baile. An é go meastar gur ‘miliúnaithe’ cuid againn, nó go bhfuil brothall simplíochta t’éis iad a bhualadh!
Cathair na Traoí.
Má bhí olltoghchán aisteach againn sa bhliain 2011, toghchán nár fág ‘cuid an tsagairt’ bpáirtí Fhianna, bhí ceann níos mistéirí againn ar an Satharn seo caite. Baineadh na cosa ó theachtaí cumasacha agus d’éirigh le teachtaí nua gaiscí a dhéanamh. Bheithfeá ag caint go maidin agus gach saghas teoraic agat ach ní bheadh aon réiteach ceart agat. Cé a déarfadh go bhféadfadh garsún ó Chill Garbhán fiche mile bhóta a ghnóthú agus a dheartháir deich mhíle. Fear gaisce gan amhras ‘sea Michael ‘Healy’ Rae. Bhí déarfainn gach cúinne don gcontae cíortha go maith aige agus má bhí fuair sé an toradh. Is beag a thuarfadh a ghaisce, Bail ó’ Dhia ort a Mhichíl. Ní raibh ach 3 seachainí ag deartháir Mhichíl le dul ar thóir bhótaí, ach más amhlaidh a bhí, d’éirigh leis gabhál mór bhóta a chnósach, 10,000. Sin iad na fearaibh agat. Tá sé ráite go bhfuair Michael 4,000 bhóta i gceantar Lios Tuathail rud a chuir isteach go mór ar vóta Jimmy Deenihan, iar aire stáit Gaeltachta. Is deire ré más ea é ag muintir Spring. Ba mhór an meas a bhí ag cuid don sean- dhream sa cheantar ar Dan Spring a bí ina TD ar feadh blianta maithe, siar amach. Árd imreór caide b’ea Dan a bhí ina chaptaen ar fhoireann sinsir buacach Chiarraí sa bhliain 1940. Nárbh imreoir maith caide Deenihan. Bhí sé ráite más fíor ná raibh aon fhonn mór ar Deenihan dul sa chlibit. Mar sin is dócha nár luigh an bhróig chomh dian air. Tá fear nua ar na maidí poilitiúil tréis an toghcháin, sin é John Brassil ó Bhaile Uí Thaidhg. Tá a chúil fhiacla tagtha do John as a bhlianta ar an gcomhairle contae. Ba comhairleoir contae a athair Noel roimhis.

Dúirt fear liom go mbíodh ‘gliuc bheag agam ar an gcaid faid is a bhíodh briseadh fógraíochta ag na saineolaithe poilitiúla ar an dteilfís. Ar TG4 deirim leat gur cíoradh páirc phoilitíochta na Gaillimhe soir siar, síos suas. Seo é mheasfá ‘New Hampshire’ na tíre seo. The Great Famine in Kerry
2015
A Study Of Its Impact In The Poor Law Unions Of Dingle And Killarney 1845-1852
le Shane Lehane foilsithe ag Cló Inis na Bró ‘The Irish Great Famine of 1845-1852 was one of the most devastating humanitarian disasters of the nineteenth-century. Essentially it is a story of human suffering set against political, economic and social circumstances that affected every part of Ireland. Nationally, its impact and tragic manifestations have attracted considerable research, analysis and discussion. However, considering the catastrophic levels of distress, sickness and death that accompanied the famine, much still remains to be told, especially from a County Kerry perspective. This study focuses primarily on the impact which the great famine had on the poor law unions of Dingle and Killarney and sheds light on the conditins and circumstances of the poor who depended largely on the potato crop for survival.
WEDNESDAY
Taking the 1851 census at face value, County Kerry experienced a population decline of 18.9 per cent between 1841-1851. Dingle union proportionally lost more of its population (23.7 per cent) than any other Kerry poor law union. Population loss was more acute in the districts west of Dingle.’ - Shane Lehane
