Dingle Notes Richie Williams Good to see the road improvements in the High Road and Ballinaboula areas and the Car Park realignment in the Wood nearing completion. Also the Broadband reception should be much improved in the Dingle catchment area very shortly and well done to the Eir employees who experienced such bad weather over the past few months while working in the Peninsula. Congratulations to all who took part in the St Patricks Day Parades in Dingle this year. A crowd of approximately 600 followed the Fife and Drum Band for the 6a.m. Parade which must be the largest attendance ever at this unique event. Then blessed with the fine weather we had a much larger participation in the main Parade and the three Supervalu Sponsored Prizes went to Féile Na Bealtaine, Lispole Band and Feile Lispole. In fact every entry deserves a big thank you as it was noticeable that a lot of thought and work had gone into all the various floats which contributed very much to the enjoyment and success of the day. Mile Buiochas also to the Gardai and Stewards for their help as the Parades passed off without much delay and Danno on the reviewing stand was also in top form again this year!!!. Tidy Towns Work Evenings recommence on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.00p.m. The National Competition is divided into 8 separate categories and we are looking for people to help with 2 sections where our marks are low. The first is titled WILDLIFE,HABITATS and NATURAL AMENITIES. and the second category is SUSTAINABLE WASTE and RESOURCE MANAGEMENT so if you feel you can contribute to these or the other general maintenance work that we get involved with please support our work evenings. Mile Buiochas also to the 20 people who turned up on Good Friday for the BIG CLEANUP when over 40 full bags of litter was collected along the approach roads to Dingle. And the best news is that 50 per cent of the litter collected has been recycled between glass, tin and plastic . As the KWD COUNTY CLEAN UP is officially on next Saturday APRIL 2nd we invite people to join us again at 10a.m.starting at the Bottle Bank to undertake another effort to make our area an even cleaner place to live in for locals or for tourists to admire and hopefully revisit and recommend to others to do likewise. Upcoming events include Feile An Diseart this coming Weekend April 1st to 3rd. Then on Saturday April 16th the families of recently deceased persons from this area are organising a 5k walk along Sli Na Slainte to raise funds for Bru Columbanus House in Cork which provides a wonderful facility for people visiting patients in Cork Hospitals. Colm O’ Connor is also facing the sheep shears in Dingle Mart on that day for the same cause!!! On Sunday April 17th the annual Hope Guatemala Walk from Dingle to Ceann Tra will start from Goat Street at 2p.m.

We Are Moving After a number of years in Green Street, we are moving office to Goat Street. From next week we can be found 2 doors up from the girls primary school.

Féile na Bealtaine receiving their trophy from Kevin O’ Connor of Garvey’s Supervalu for best float in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Dingle.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 5th April will be the John Carney directed “Sing Street”. Set in mid eighties Dublin, the film has echoes of the Commitments in it’s subject, tone and location. The film is a delightful dash through 80’s nostalgia, musical and otherwise and follows the trials of Conor who tranfers from his private school to the Christian Brother in Synge Street where new posh boys aren’t well received by school bullies. The following week on Tuesday 12th April the feature will be the latest Coen Brothers offering “Hail Caeser”. Set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age the film follows a day in the life of Eddie Mannix, a Hollywood fixer for Capitol Pictures in the 1950s, who cleans up and solves problems for big names and stars in the industry. But when studio star Baird Whitlock disappears, Mannix has to deal with more than just the fix. Starring Josh Brolin and George Clooney, Hail Caeser is packed with period detail and perfectly cast. with the Coen brothers delivering an agreeably lightweight love letter to post-war Hollywood. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Repair Cafe + Upcycling Sunday Meitheal Deisiúcháin + Uaschúrsála Corca Dhuibhne

Kennedy’s Bar, Goat St, Sunday 3rd April Do you have broken items lying around your house, crying out for some TLC? Or things which are no longer functional but have useful parts which might become something else? Or even things which you imagined would make a sculpture but don't have the time or the skills to create something beautiful with it? Then the Dingle Repair Cafe is for you... In the last number of years Repair Cafes have been popping up around the world to encourage people to fix things rather than dumping useful things in landfills. In these days of cheap consumer goods we have become a throwaway society where its easier to buy a new item rather than fix what we have. This is just not sustainable. Repair Cafes provide a supportive environment in which people are involved in fixing things for themselves and possibly learning new skills in the process. You can come along with your broken stuff and get help fixing it, borrow a tool to fix it or get advice on how to fix if it cannot be fixed on the day. There will be a number of people there who can offer help/advice on items such as household appliances, textiles, small furniture repair, electronic hardware, tool sharpening and also some creative minds who will be upcycling items and artists who will be creating works of art with unused items. So what are you waiting for? ... dust off all that old stuff and bring it to Kennedy's Bar, Goat Street on Sunday the 3rd of April between 2pm and 5pm. If you have a useful skill and would like to become involved or like to know more, contact Breda on 087 2438697 or Darach on 087 2153758.

Roast Pork Fillet with Roast Garlic and Sage, Glazed Carrots, Wilted Greens and Cider & Apple Sauce Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School For this recipe I have taken a pork fillet, which on its own can be boring and can dry out too easily. By getting some good local bacon and roasting some garlic and then adding sage you can turn this in to remarkable main course with very little work. There are really delicious flavours for this dish: the pork with roast garlic, the sweetness from the carrots when cooked this way, the greens and then the taste of the cider sauce. Again as always if you try to find good local or Irish ingredients this will add to the flavours and nutrition of the end result. Ingredients 1 pork fillet trimmed Bacon about 8 slices for each fillet Handful of sage 1 bulb of garlic 3 carrots peeled and sliced thin Mix of greens such as spinach, kale or chard washed Bunch of parsley chopped 200g butter Rapeseed oil Salt and pepper For the cider and apple sauce 2 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped finely 30g butter 2 tbsp. water 2 tbsp. cider 30g soft dark brown sugar, or to taste Method

Preheat oven to 180ÂşC. To prepare and cook the pork Put the garlic bulb into tin foil and put into the oven for 30 minutes while this is cooking you can prepare the carrots. To cook the carrots put them and butter in a wide-bottomed saucepan over a low heat and sprinkle them with the salt, pepper and sugar. Make sure the carrots are in a single layer on the bottom of the pan. Cover with a lid and cook over a low heat for about 30 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally to ensure even cooking. Add the thyme and cook for a further five minutes until tender and glazed. Once the garlic is roasted. Remove it from the oven and take off the skin and make in to a paste. Add chopped sage, salt and pepper. Lay cling film on a flat surface and lay down streaky bacon, spread the garlic paste over the bacon. Season the pork fillet and place it on top of the bacon and then roll it tightly. Remove the cling film and use cocktail sticks to secure. Seal the pork in a hot pan browning on all sides and place in the oven and cook for about 15-20 mins. While this is cooking prepare the sauce by heating the apples, butter, water and cider in a covered saucepan for 15 minutes, or until the apples are soft enough to beat to a purĂŠe. Stir in soft dark brown sugar to taste Once the pork is ready allow it to rest for 5 mins. For the wilted greens The greens only need to be prepared at the last minute. Put a pan over medium to high heat then add the kale for a minute or two. Season it and remove from the pan. Squeeze the excess water from the kale before serving. To serve, place some of the carrots and greens on the centre of the plate. Slice the pork and put two of three slices on top of the vegetables. Spoon the sauce over the meat. Enjoy!!

Louis Murchan DOG MICROCHIPPING TO BE COMPULSORY FROM END OF MARCH Dog owners are reminded that all new dogs must be both microchipped and registered on an authorised database as this will become compulsory at the end of March this year. Many owners have already had their dogs’ microchipped, particularly since the laws were signed last year. He stressed the importance of making sure all dogs are compliant with the requirements that the microchip used be ISO compliant and that the microchip details are registered on an authorised database. There are currently four authorised databases Animark, Fido, The Irish Coursing Club and the Irish Kennel Club. All of these will issue an ownership certificate which allows owners to ensure registered details relating to their dog are correct. The certificate is also needed for transfer of ownership. Purchasers should not buy or accept a dog without a certificate. Further details regarding the authorised database can be found on the Department’s website. The fact must be welcomed that the cost of the implanting of microchips and data registration services has been falling, further helped by the economies of scale that the new compulsory scheme is delivering. Underpinned by state funding, subsidized micro chipping initiatives have been introduced by a number of animal welfare charities. This has helped support dog microchipping for disadvantaged persons such as the elderly or those on benefits. Dog owners are reminded that dog ownership involves responsibilities to protect the welfare of the animal. Microchipping and registration is merely one of a number of actions that any responsible dog owner should undertake. Vaccination and neutering are also important considerations in protecting and enhancing levels of dog welfare in Ireland.

Following an open competitive tender process run by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine the general BDGP training contract was awarded to Teagasc. Courses will be rolled out across the country commencing on Monday the 21st March and all BDGP participants will be invited to attend in the coming months. It is important the participants respond to the invitation when received and notify their training centre of their attendance using the notification system set out in the invitation. The Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) forms a part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. It involves funding of €300 million over the six year programme and builds on the success of previous schemes including the €23 million Beef Genomics Scheme (BGS). The programme will place Ireland at the forefront of climate friendly agriculture and further the “Green” image of our beef production, which has served us well in high value markets around the world. This General Training course is a mandatory element of the Programme and will be four hours long. Having attended participants will have a better understanding of: • the different requirements within this programme to enable participants to maximise annual payment over the coming five years; • how €urostar indexes for bulls, cows and heifers are produced and how they can be used to improve the performance of your suckler herd; • genomics and the reasons why it will improve the accuracies of the €urostar indexes in your herd; • what your options are for sourcing the replacement females that you will need for your herd over the coming years to meet the programme requirements. It would be preferable if participants attend the first course that they are invited to as subsequent courses may be held at a less convenient location.

DEPARTMENT WARNS ON ILLEGAL BURNING In response to a recent spate of uncontrolled burning incidents affecting Counties Cork and Kerry, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has repeated warnings to farmers and other landowners that the burning of land remains unlawful between March 1st and August 31st under current legislation. Previous warnings are repeated that land which is found to have been burned outside of the legal season can be considered ineligible for payment under Department schemes, including Basic Payment Scheme, GLAS and other area based schemes. Satellite based detection and assessment of recently affected areas is now underway. In addition, further inspections may be conducted on lands where fire incidents have been detected since March 1st. Current fire behaviour has been described as moderate, but there is a strong possibility of further and potentially higher fire risk conditions emerging again next month, as spring weather conditions improve and temperatures increase. The Department is warning farmers and other land owners of the inherent safety risks associated with uncontrolled burning. These include the threat to neighbour’s homes, livelihoods and critical infrastructure in rural areas, and the impacts on the safety and wellbeing of elderly and infirm people living in areas affected by smoke. The diversion of emergency service resources in such areas can have grave consequences in the event they are required for more life threatening emergency incidents elsewhere. The Department calls on landowners to cooperate in fire prevention efforts and to report unattended or dangerous fires to the emergency services without delay, before they can become larger incidents that are more difficult to deal with.

GLAS UPDATE GLAS farmers must make 2016 BPS online The online system for applications under Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is now open. This application is the key to payments under all of the schemes run by the Department of Agriculture. • This year, farmers who are in GLAS will not receive a BPS application form. They will receive maps of the land that they declared in 2015 in the post but there will be no paper application form. • They must make their BPS application online By March 31, 2016, the following actions must be dealt with if you have them in your application: • Bird boxes, bat boxes, sand/box for bees • Planting a grove of native trees By May 31, 2016, the following actions must be dealt with if you have them in your application: • Wild Bird Cover It was also announced that the deadline for completion of the GLAS actions “Protection of Watercourses from Bovines” and“Riparian Margins” is being extended from the 31st March 2016 to the31st July 2016 Louis Murchan: 087-2857938

TRAINING FOR THE BDGP The rollout of general training to all BDGP Participants has commenced. The training aspect of the BDGP is a critical element of the Programme and will provide clear information to farmers with regard to the requirements at individual farm level. The course will equip farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary to optimise delivery of the commitments undertaken under the Programme. The course will also increase the participants’ knowledge of genomics 12 West Kerry Live

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

In another incident involving a Boeing 727 a bomb exploded on a TWA flight over Greece and four people were blown out of the plane. Petrol prices are coming down by 18p a gallon this week as the oil industry hits bottom. Prices for crude oil are almost as low as they were in 1974 but no doubt the Govt. will find some way of increasing the price again before long.

Thursday, April 3.

Saturday, March 22, 1986. Off to Tralee to buy a Confirmation outfit for the big day in May. It took a while to find it but it wouldn’t be any good if we got it in the first shop. Had a plastic lunch in a plastic restaurant before more shopping and then home. The mayor of New York is proposing to introduce legislation to ban smoking in public buildings.

Sunday, March 23. The ESB went off this morning so no lunch or dinner until 5pm. Spent a miserably cold day in the house.

Monday, March 24. Big fall of snow this afternoon which transformed the countryside from spring to winter - we may have a white Easter. The American Cancer Society is proposing a ban on all cigarette and tobacco advertising - seems to be part of a growing movement. The Americans and Libyans have started hostilities along the Libyan coast.

A fine sunny day again - real summer weather. Many farmers have let their cows out after the winter and, as usual, the cows are very frisky, leaping and running like kids let out of school. We went up to Mary and Kevin Devane’s for a get-together after their Stations this evening.

Friday, April 4. A nice letter from Francois the lighthouse keeper in Paimpol, France, inviting us to stayin his house this summer. He also said he would be in Dingle in June and will bring a mould of a sea kayak for Thomas Lyne ‘ the fibreglass boat builder in Dingle’. He believes that sea kayaking could take off as a sport here.

Saturday, April 5. A man fell 150 feet to his death in Dún Síon this afternoon. He was walking along the cliff with his dog and it seems the dog caused him to lose his balance as he was crossing a fence, according to a witness. His name was Walker and he lived in Kinard.

Saturday, March 29. The Beatles music was banned in Russia up to now and was only sold on the black market but from today their records are on sale publicly.

Sunday, March 30. Clocks went forward in the early hours today. Easter Sunday and good crowds in the area for the weekend. Got a turkey in Garveys and enjoyed a great meal with the extended family. Watched the National Song contest tonight. The winning song ‘ You can count on me’ sounds like it has real potential - sung by a group called Luv Bug. One of the regional judging panels was based in Dingle and was chaired by Matt Britten of the Dún an Óir hotel. Famous American film actor James ‘ you-dirty-rat’ Cagney died at his home in New York at the age of 86.

Monday, March 31 Up at 7:15 and it wasn’t easy after the clocks changed. A nice sunny day so after lunch the whole family cycled to Dún Síon. We left the bikes near Farrell’s new house, as yet unoccupied, and made our way to the dún or promontory fort. We scrambled up the steep banks and slid down to the bottom of the deep ditch through the thick grass. Headed home after a couple of hours, tired but happy after a very pleasant outing. Celebrating 5 years of Kalyana Centre for Mindfulness in Dingle

Dingle, this extraordinary little town, is known by millions of people. It is loved for the lively town in the midst of this beautiful nature, for the many exciting festivals, for the music, the Cinema and Theatre, the many extraordinary artists, for its therapists, for Fungie of course and the many restaurants with their amazing food, the colourful shops, the 52 Pubs and lovely coffee places, the friendly locals and the warm-hearted hosts that welcome guests from all over the world in their Guesthouses and B and Bs. Some people from abroad, many from all over Ireland and quite a lot of people from Kerry also know that Dingle is home to a modest little Meditation Centre. 12 years ago, Eva Bruha moved from Switzerland to the Dingle Peninsula following 13 years of practicing and studying Insight Meditation in Asia, Europe and the US. 6 years ago she moved to Dingle town and 5 years ago she opened Kalyana Centre for Mindfulness here. Since then she is quietly working away, offering classes and courses and short retreats to those who seek some quite space and time, to people who want to get an in-depth introduction to Mindfulness Meditation, to people who suffer from symptoms of Stress and want to learn a different way, based on Mindfulness, of dealing with the challenges that life keeps in store for all of us. Over the years many hundreds of men and women have attended workshops, courses and classes with Eva in Kerry. This coming Saturday, April 2nd, we’re celebrating Kalyana Centre's fifth birthday – with tea, cake and short meditations – for once chatting rather than just quietly sitting. If you have done classes with Eva over the years, if you’re interested in Mindfulness and curious to see this little place or if you’re hoping to attend some classes in the future - do call in between 2 – 5 in the afternoon to 40 John Street. Short meditations will be offered at 2.30, 3.30 and 4.30pm. www.kalyanacentre.com admin@kalyanacentre.com 087-2712662 AND the next Introduction to Mindfulness course will start April 28th, Sandra Rieutord from Dingle at Hiroshima mémorial Park Japan 7 – 8.30pm. Email – info@fsk.ie - www. fsk.ie Obituary It was with sadness that we said goodbye to Jack Doyle, Foilatrisnigh, Camp on Saturday last. Jack was laid to rest at Ballinknockane Cemetary following Liturgy of the Word celebrated by our parish priest Fr. Gerry Keane. In his homily Fr. Gerry touched on the life of Jack Doyle, a devoted family man, one of his proudest moments being his son Tommy captaining Kerry to victory in Croke Park in 1986, when he jumped the wire with excitement getting into the field to celebrate with the team. Jack was one of the best traditional musicians in the country and he composed many pieces to mark special occasions, weddings and other events in our community. Jack had the music from the cradle, his mother Kate Hennessy-Doyle and all her family being steeped in the tradition, his brother Stanley was a famous fiddle player and he and Jack played with the local Annascaul/Camp Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann in the sixties. Jack made a huge mark in the USA too, where he played for dances and weddings in New York, Boston and finally in Chicago, It was there he met and married Margaret, a Clare Woman, the love of his life and with 5 children the family moved back home to Ireland in 1963 and Jack turned his hand to farming and again it was to be a labour of love. Training his own sheep dogs became a lucrative hobby for Jack and famers came from far and wide to procure a good dog. After a bit of a break from the music Jack returned in later years to play at Mike O Neill’s Sunday traditional music session again making many new friends and acquaintances in the music scene, some even travelling down from Cork and farther afield to play music with Jack. One of Jack’s greatest traits was his generosity of spirit and his willingness to share his talents and he was only too delighted to pass down the music to the young children of Camp, his own grandchildren and friends who owe a great debt of gratitude to him. On Saturday a guard of honour of friends, neighbours and community conveyed Jack on his final journey to the cemetary and fellow accordeonist and friend, Eugene McGrath delivered a moving and powerful grave16 West Kerry Live

Everywhen we have had such a great spell of sunshine. body welcome! There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn - 087-6720848 ergy, a system can payDowd for itself in 5 to 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com facebook/dowdyman

Many thanks to everyone from Cumann Peil Ban Daingean Uí Chúis, CLG Daingean Uí Chúis, the West Kerry Board and Cllr Séamus Cosaí Mac Gearailt for all of their time but most of all thanks to all of the young boys and girls who took part on the day and helped to ensure a fitting tribute for Comóradh 1916-2016 i bPáirc an Ághasaigh.

Lá Oscailte le haghaidh Comóradh 1916-2016 As part of celebrations in Dingle town, Corca Dhuibhne and West Kerry an open day was organised by the local GAA Club. Páirc an Ághasaigh takes its name from Tomás Ághas who died for Irish freedom. Fr. Begley blessed the Tomás Ághas name stone on the wall of Páirc an Ághasaigh, the playing fields and the clubrooms before blessing all those present. Dr. Conor Brosnan gave a talk about the GAA in Dingle and Corca Dhuibhne and this was followed by a talk by Carl O’Flaherty on local rivalries and Tomás Ághas. The young athletes passed away the time by getting ready for the epic sporting events to come. Tug of War, Egg & Spoon, Relays and Sharp Shooting contests followed that will ensure Dingle, Corca Dhuibhne, West Kerry and Kerry will remain very com-

Cumann Staire Fionntrá / Ventry Historical Society

Comóradh 1916 Commemoration: ‘Lia os a leacht’ Ventry’s only title to renown over the centuries was as the site of Cath Fionntrá, The Battle of Ventry Harbour’ (in which the King of the World was defeated), one of the few Fenian tales accessible to a wide public in the 19th century, especially through English translations. The opinion has been expressed that the choice of name for the 19th century revolutionary ‘Fenians’ was influenced by this popular tale. The attention of the public in Ireland and England was focussed on Ventry about the mid-19th century when the village of Ventry was selected as the centre for a proselytising campaign in this area, ‘The Soup Campaign’, with the erection of a training college, church, primary school and ‘colony’ there. However, it was the local Church of Ireland clergyman, Séamus Goodman, who recorded almost three quarters of his famous collection of some 1,100 Irish airs, now in Trinity College Dublin, from the Ventry piper, Tomás Ó Cinnéide, about this time. Goodman was Professor of Irish in TCD from 1879 to 1896. The fortunes of Ventry village at the beginning of the 20th century were determined by the growth of tourism and the literary and language movements. Two newly-built guest-houses in the village hosted visitors from mainland Europe, Britain and Ireland. Among those who stayed in Sea View were the scholar, Thomas F. O’Rahilly (Professor of Irish in TCD and in the Institute for Advanced Studies) in 1904; the dramatist J.M. Synge, a former pupil of Goodman’s in TCD (who addressed two letters to his fiancée, Molly Allgood, from Sea View), and Seosamh Laoide (first to publish Irish name-forms of Irish Post-towns and of Dublin streets) in 1907; the Irish scholar and cultural activist, Eveleen Nicholls (drowned off the Blasket at the end of her visit) in 1909, as also Gretta Cousins, a Methodist, who spoke publicly on behalf of ‘The Irish Women’s Franchise League’ (of which she was co-founder with Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington) in Dingle two weeks after Eveleen’s death. The above-named T.F. O’Rahilly seems to have directed the attention of his cousin, Michael J. O’Rahilly, to Ventry, where he erected a holiday home in 1912, though he may have been influenced also by Seán an Chóta from this area, his Irish tutor in Dublin. His purpose was to immerse his family in an Irish-speaking environment. This was also the motivation of two others who settled in the neighourhood in 1913. Desmond Fitzgerald rented the Coast Guard Station in Ventry, and Ernest Blythe sought work on a nearby farm, but had to transfer to Kinard in Lispole parish. In spite of its association with a legendary battle and bitter religious strife, this quiet backwater of Ventry is not where one would expect to find prominent individuals in the national movement conspiring to dismember an empire. O Rahilly initiated the founding of the Irish Volunteers, and he and the other two were instrumental in the establishment and the drilling of them in Ventry. Long discussions through the night followed O Rahilly’s regular visits, with news from Dublin. All three were expelled from Kerry under ‘The Defence of the Realm Act’ in 1915; O Rahilly died in the GPO and Fitzgerald escaped from it in 1916, while Blythe learned of the Rising in an English jail, after expulsion from Ireland for his country-wide recruiting activity. The latter two served as ministers in the Free State government, and Fitzgerald subsequently lectured in Notre Dame university in the USA. Perhaps nowhere outside of Dublin can such variety in personnel be observed among revolutionaries as in the Ventry Gaeltacht in 1912-14, a fact that needs to be brought to mind in this year, when ‘reconciliation’ is one of the primary aims of the 1916 commemoration. O Rahilly grew up in an affluent, ‘establishment’ family in North Kerry; was married to Nancy Brown, daughter of an American industrialist; and spent some months on a grand tour of Europe on honeymoon. Surprisingly, he is listed as ‘Justice of the Peace’ (like his father) in the official Gazette for 1903-7, when his nationalism was already apparent. Nancy learned Irish and later became Vicepresident of Cumann na mBan (feminine Volunteers). She went on hunger-strike outside Mountjoy Jail once on being refused access to prisoners. London-born Fitzgerald – with a Cork father and Kerry mother - associated with a group of poets in that city, and went to France in search of the muse as was the practice of the time. His wife, Mabel McConnell,

was of a Belfast Presbyterian family involved in trade; a graduate of Queen’s University, she did postgraduate studies in the University of London, and joined the Gaelic League. She served for a time as secretary to G.B. Shaw and George Moore and was acquainted with the American poet, Ezra Pound. She later became secretary of Cumann na mBan, and, unlike her husband, favoured the Republican side in the Civil War. Blythe, a member of the Church of Ireland from a South Antrim farm, became a reporter for a Northern Unionist paper in 1909, on return from Dublin, where he had joined the IRB and Gaelic League under the influence of dramatist, Seán O’Casey. While minister in the Free State government he awarded the first state grant to the Abbey Theatre, of which he was later M.D. and then chairman for many years. This constellation of individuals of very varied backgrounds who came together as cultural and political revolutionaries in a backwater of revolutionary Ireland merit the attention of those who wish to commemorate 1916 in all its dimensions. Their motivations and destinies offer a paradigm for those who wish to promote genuine national reconciliation with the preservation of genuine cultural values. Their memory deserves to be cherished ! Cath Fionntrá finishes with the death of Caol and of the animals whose life-span was bound to his. His body is taken from the southern strand, Tráigh Chaoil to this day, by his leman, Créidhe, and the Fianna. Having recited the beautiful poem ‘Géiseann Cuan’, Créidhe lies beside Caol and dies of a broken heart, whereupon they are buried in the same grave. ‘And it was I’, said Caoilte, ‘who placed the monolith on their grave (lia os a lighe), so that it is known as ‘The Grave of Caol and Créidhe.’

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Notes

ours (Green and White socks and togs.) This is to avoid any inconvenience prior to games. We would also ask parents/guardians of players to inform their children of this County Board Rule.

Under 16’S: Our U16 team went down to Churchill by a single point, in Churchill, on Thursday evening last- on a score line of 2-10 to 2-11. It was a difficult loss to take, as a last minute goal by the opposition was the difference in the end. It was their first outing this year- so great credit is due to every player given the very competitive performance in what was a very tight game. The team will learn a lot from this game and no doubt improve as the year goes on. Well done to all the panel and to David Heasman and his mentors.

Defibrillator: Our club defibrillator has now been relocated to outside the doors of the clubrooms and is available to the community. As we are all aware, access to a defibrillator can save some one’s life. Our club is compiling a list of qualified individuals who are competent in using a defibrillator. You never know that perhaps your own life or the life of your son/ daughter/ mother / father/ brother/sister/granny or grandad may be saved some day by someone on this list.

Seniors: Our senior team are at home to John Mitchel’s on Saturday ( 2nd April) next with a 5.30 start. Please come along and support your club. Mid Kerry League: A last minute goal by Keel gave them a one point victory over Milltown Castlemaine on Saturday last. Final score was 1-05 to 1-06. Milltown were without 5 of their senior panel through injury and were slow to get into the game. It took until the 11 th minute until Jonathan O’ Sullivan registered their first point - with 2 points already scored by the opposition. Keel quickly responded but in the 16th minute, Thady O Sullivan slotted home a goal for MC to leave the score 1/01 to 3 points after 16 minutes. MC added 2 further points to leave the score 1/03 to 3 points. 2 points from Keel just before the half time whistle gave us a one point lead at the shirt whistle and facing a stiff breeze in the second half. Four substitutes brought fresh vigour to MC and a further 2 points were added by David Roche and Cathal Moriarty in the 3rd and 6th minute, to give a scoreline of 1/05 to 5 points. It took until the 25 th minute for the next score which came from Keel-1/05 to 6 points. With the final whistle looming and a 2 point margin by MC, an unfortunate stray pass handed Keel a golden opportunity and they made no mistake - a brilliant goal which gave them a 1 point victory. Hard luck to MC and well done to Keel. Club Lotto: The recent lotto draw for €6,600 took place on THURSDAY MARCH 24th in The Castle Inn Bar, Castlemaine. Numbers drawn 6, 9, 25 and 31. Our lucky consolation prizewinners were:2 x €50 each to Mike Dowling, Ballyfinnane, and Sean O Sullivan, Curraghmore West . 4 x €25 each to John Murphy, The Cliff, Batt Moriarty, Larkins, Martin Murphy, Gortalea, Tralee and Margaret Moriarty, Clash, Castlemaine. The Glory Of Cheltenham

jockey at this year’s festival, only strengthening claims that his future in the world of horse racing is a very bright one.

Tadhg Evans

The highlight of the week for the Dingle jockey saw him guide 11-1 shot Tango De Juilley to an impressive second place finish in the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate on the Thursday.

No other day on the sporting calendar seems to pass as quickly as the four that make up Cheltenham’s festival meeting. That’s always the way with the best things in life – it never feels as though they’ve stuck around for long enough. As lovers of racing pause for a breather at the end of the annual Cotswolds carnival, chances are that they’re all asking themselves the same thing – how is it that this sport, of all sports, has such little faith in itself?

All five of Jack’s rides at the festival gave the people of Corca Dhuibhne great cause for pride. Congratulations must also go to Tralee’s Bryan Cooper, who piloted Don Cossack to victory in jumps racing’s greatest race, the Gold Cup.

Maybe it’s because the first image that enters most minds at the mention of horse racing is not of a frenziedly run Queen Mother, or the awesome athleticism of a great Gold Cup winner. Instead, it’s that husky forty-eight-year-old with a faded sleeve tattoo keeping a keen eye on the 2.05 at Taunton. If not him, then it might be the animal he’s lumped a good part of his dole money on, the thoroughbred that’s unaware that he’s set to tumble fatally over the next fence. National hunt racing will always struggle to distance itself from both of those problematic pictures, with the latter being particularly troublesome. Seven horses perished at this year’s festival, and it’s difficult, perhaps even impossible, to oppose the belief that forcing unwitting animals to face such obvious danger for our own gain is unjustifiable. But that’s a debate to be left for those more learned than me to muse over. Another less emotional, though still complex, conundrum for racing is the authority of the Cheltenham festival. All it needs for undisputed command is the championship race for middle distance hurdlers — which is still effectively held by Aintree. For everything else, there’s Prestbury Park. Though Royal Ascot is the most venerable festival on the flat, there’s certainly greater equality on the other side of the racing divide. The national hunt pot simmers gently over the winter, before overflowing over four days in March, after which even Aintree and Punchestown’s jamborees are wrongly but regularly dismissed as afterthoughts by casual sports fans. Maybe it’s that overreliance on four days that weighs down jump racing’s confidence, and beckons in a never-ending queue of critics – the national hunt tops the sporting headlines for less than a half week per year, and might only return for the Grand National in the interim. It’s hard to keep cool when people ask if it’s even a sport at all, and maybe it’s that lack of exposure that energizes the detractors. But racing addicts must remember that these people are wrong — even if it’s only proven once a year. A Cheltenham festival is an event that’s more lived through than merely experienced. Whether its dominance is preferable or not, there’s surely too much to love about this fiesta to argue for a more even spread of the goodies over the course of a national hunt season. Jumps racing doesn’t deserve to have its reputation pulled asunder simply on the back of its association with bettors, but only evades that clasp during the Cheltenham week. Over the course of a festival, it’s the horses, the trainers, the jockeys, and the owners that nose their way into the stories that concern us. Of the lucky punters who command our attention, few consume their lives with betting prior to the festival, and return to normal immediately upon its finish – just as it should be. Cheltenham 2016, like every Cheltenham festival, was a showcase for the casuals of what’s wonderful about national hunt racing – plenty, as it happens. Annie Power proved herself to be the most splendid mare since Dawn Run, Mullins dominated, Walsh moved past the 50 festival winners mark, Vautour and Douvan produced greatness, and Sprinter Sacre confirmed that yes, they can come back. Just another Cheltenham then.

Cllr. Séamus Cosaí Fitzgerald

Kerry County Council / Údarás na Gaeltachta

Jumps racing, that curious sport virtually confined to these islands, has an array of faults, and even more belittlers. But there’s no need for elevated concern in the face of their criticism – if the backbiters don’t ‘get’ moments like Sprinter’s return, then maybe they’ll never ‘get’ racing at all.

Deontas seirbhísí comhairleachta do €12,000 aontaithe a chur ar fáil ag Bórd Údarás na Gaeltachta do Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne.

Aisteoirí Bhréanainn agus Comóradh 1916

Ach nuair a chuala muintir na Cinn Airde go raibh taithí ar dhrámaíocht ag Earnán, d’iarradar air dráma a léiriú leo. Thosaíodar ag ullmhú na ndrámaí seo: An Pota Súip le W. B. Yeats;

Boscó Ó Conchúir

Caitlín Ní hUallacháin le W. B. Yeats;

I rith na bliana seo 2016, mar chuid de Chomóradh 1916, tá sé á bheartú ag Aisteoirí Bhréanainn ceithre ghearrdhráma (idir 15-20 nóiméad an ceann) a chur ar stáitse: An Pota Anraith le W. B. Yeats; Caitlín Ní Uallacháin le W. B. Yeats; Liúdaidhe Óg na Leargadh Móire le Séamus Mac Mághnais; Éirí na Gealaí le Lady Gregory. Cúlra an togra Saolaíodh Earnán de Blaghd i gCo. Aontroma sa bhliain 1889. Mac feirmeora. Tháinig sé go Baile Átha Cliath ag obair. Toisc go raibh suim sa Ghaelainn aige óna mháthair, bhí sé mar bhall d’eagrais Ghaelainne sa chathair. Bhí sé, chomh maith, mar bhall den IRB agus d’Óglaigh na hÉireann. Bhí sé sa phríosún nuair a thosaigh Éirí Amach 1916. Níos déanaí, bhí sé mar Aire Airgeadais sa chéad Rialtas agus mar Bhainisteoir / Stiúrthóir ar Amharclann na Mainistreach ó 1941–1972. In Aibreán na bliana 1913, tháinig Earnán de Blaghd go Ciarraí Thiar ag lorg oibre, le haon fheirmeoir a thógfadh é, chun deis a fháil feabhas a chur ar a chuid Gaelainne agus chun staidéar a dhéanamh ar an athrú teangan. Fuair sé obair ó Ghriaire Ághas i gCinn Aird i Lios Póil le tacaíocht ó athair Garret Fitzgerald a raibh tigh ag a mhuintir i gCorca Dhuibhne. Ba é an Griaire seo athair Thomáis Ághas a fuair bás ar stailc ocrais i 1917. Bhí Earnán i gCinn Aird go dtí Meán Fómhair 1914 --- bliain go leith (formhór an ama). Chomh maith lena obair fheirme, bhí Earnán mar chaptaen ar na hÓglaigh i bParóiste Lios Póil.

Liúdaidhe Óg na Leargadh Móire le Séamus Mac Mághnais. Fuaireadar ‘gréisdhath, créapfholt agus guma alcóil’ ó Gamages i Londain. Shocraíodar na drámaí a chur ar stáitse i Scoil na mBráthar i nDaingean Uí Chúis in Earrach na bliana 1914. Rachadh airgead an dorais go dtí Scoil na mBráthar. Bhíodh na cleachtaí drámaíochta acu i dTigh Uí Ghrífín agus, an fhad a bhítí ag fanacht leis na haisteoirí go léir chun teacht, bhíodh roinnt port acu ar an mileoidean ó Thomás Ághas eile (mac Mhaitiú) a maraíodh i luíochán Lios Póil 1921. Tar éis na gcleachtaí drámaíochta bhíodh a thuilleadh ceoil is rince acu. Gan amhras, bhailíodh slua go Tigh na nGrifíneach. Toisc nár thaitin le sagart cúnta an pharóiste go mbeadh buachaillí is cailíní óga ag cleachtadh drámaíochta le chéile, ag ceol is ag rince agus, níos measa, ag siúl abhaile le chéile déanach san oíche, thug sé iarracht deireadh a chur leis na cleachtaí drámaíochta agus na céapars i Lios Póil agus leis an léiriú sa Mhainistir. (Ní mar sin a bheadh ag ár bhfear-ne, Tomás !) Ach le tacaíocht ós na Bráithre, ó mhuintir Lios Póil agus ó sheanbhean, 80 bliain d’aois, a mhairbh coileach chun go mbeadh sé mar phropa sa dráma, chuaigh an oíche dhrámaíochta sa Mhainistir ar aghaidh. (Féach: Slán le hUltaibh le hEarnán de Blaghd) Ag tabhairt na n-imeachtaí sin chun cuimhne agus mar chomóradh ar spioraid, idéalachas, dóchas is litríocht na haimsire sin, cuirfidh Aisteoirí Bhréanainn, faoi stiúir an Ath. Tomás Ó hÍceadha (a bhfuil gaol gairid aige leis an dá Ághasach thuas) agus Marina Ní Dhubháin, Drámaí na Cinn Airde ar stáitse arís, i 2016, i Scoil na mBráthar sa Daingean, i Lios Póil agus i Halla na Feothanaí.

Family; Asteraceae Mugwort grows on waste ground and dry banks and is a tall perennial reaching up to 3 feet in height. It is a native plant and Mugwort as it appears can be found in Kerry though I have yet to in the spring come across this interesting herb here in Corcha Dhuibhne. Do please let me know if you come across it. It can be introduced into the garden perhaps in that place at the end of your garden where you like to leave nettles, cleavers, dandelions etc. grow for future foraging and for the bees and birds! You can grow it from seed or try to source Mugwort in flower a plant but be careful as it can spread and may need culling in the spring after a few seasons. Mugwort is not an especially pretty plant but where it flourishes it can be shrub like hiding that wild patch or growing against the fencing in your garden. Zoe Devlin in her lovely book on wild flowers in Ireland maintains it is a graceful rather than a beautiful plant. The leaves of the mugwort are dark green with a smooth upper surface and a soft silvery underside. The plant flowers from July to September with either reddish or yellow flowers, which are arranged along the upper stem. Mugwort is one of several species in the genus Artemesia and is an ancient herb of healing and magic and one of our native smudging herbs. Smudging is used to protect, connect, calm and clear negative energies. To smudge you can light the dried herb in a suitable container or on a charcoal disk and leave to smoulder or make smudging sticks, which are made up into a tight bundle of dried herb, lit and then left to smoulder. Sage and lavender can also be used for smudging as can resins such as frankincense and myrrh, which can be burnt using charcoal discs. If the smudging sticks are made well they will continue to smoulder, which is what we want but do not leave unattended. When quenching the stick put the burning tip into sand, for example, rather than water as you can then use it again later. It is of course important you are 100% sure the stick is no longer smouldering. A pillow of dried mugwort can be used to protect from bad dreams and to help relax the mind. Burning mugwort can also help keep midges and other biting insects away and similar to its cousin Sweet Annie Aretemesia annua, has some anti- malarial properties. Mugwort is typically pungent and bitter as are all the Artemesias. Bitter herbs generally promote better digestion and can be used as part of a treatment for poor appetite and colicky symptoms as the herb will calm the stomach, relieve bloating and help clear liver congestion. It will also help to clear parasites like it’s stronger cousin Wormwood, Artemesia absynthium , the latter having a very bitter taste. Mugwort can also be used as a wash against fungal infections and a poultice of mugwort will help to relieve insect bites and rashes from stinging or toxic plants. Therapeutically the herb has a strong affinity for the reproductive system and can help to normalise menses in particular long cycles and delayed periods. Mugwort will also help to relieve discomfort and cramping during menstruation. Mugwort has an affinity for the nervous system also and is a valuable herb in treating mild depression and tension. The herb can help to reduce muscle spasms and can help to reduce symptoms of excitability in, for example, epilepsy and tremors in Parkinsons.

As a member of the Asteraceae family it is potentially allergenic to people sensitive to this plant. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, ‘Nature’s Knowledge’, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Email: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com

Supporting Your Child To Develop Emotional Intelligence Anne Healy Most parents that I have met in the thirty years I am working with them have all had one wish for their child. They want them to grow up to become competent and contented adults. They want to have a good relationship and feel connected to them. One of the many supports that you can provide to your children to become contended adults is to help them develop emotional intelligence. This means to help them develop a capacity to understand their emotions and manage them appropriately. It also helps them to develop resilience to help them manage the stresses and difficulties that come their way. There are numerous questions: How do children learn about emotions? How do they learn to understand and respond to their sadness, or joy? What can children do when their feelings are so strong they may feel overwhelmed? What can you the parent or carer do when your child explodes in anger or is fearful? Teaching your child to be emotionally intelligent is one way to help them. The foundation for helping your child develop emotional intelligence is YOU and the deep connection that you will have with them. As soon as children are verbal they can be taught to identify and communicate their feelings. In a home environment where emotions are discussed openly, children will learn how to talk about their feelings and also at the same time develop empathy for their peers. Therefore it is crucial that you as the parent are a positive role model to help your child manage and understand their feelings. For example, your child explodes in anger after a request you made to him or her to do something. Do you become like another child and have a tantrum also? Or can you stay calm and model to your child how you can manage to regulate your strong feelings and still be in charge? In a situation like this it is helpful to say to your child ‘Seems like you are really angry about what I asked you to do, I understand that. However I need you to do what I asked and then you can go back to listening to your music’ (or whatever he or she may be doing). Why this response encourages emotional intelligence. When your child feels understood by you it triggers soothing biochemicals; this strengthens neural pathway that he or she will use to soothe himself or herself as they gets older. And

2. Connect with him or her by giving them a hug or gentle stroke of their arm. This helps regulate his or her feelings. Scoop down to his or her level and say something like ‘Seems like you are feeling sad and disappointed that your friend did not play with you in school’. (This helps re-direct his feelings of being alone to feeling understood by you!) 3. Depending on the child’s age and using appropriately developmental language you could say to them ‘So let’s make a plan together to see what we can do to support you with how you feel’. The child may offer a suggestion like ‘she is not my best friend any more so I will not play with her’. You could respond by saying you understand why she is saying this but would she really miss her friend if she did not play ever again with her. Usually a child is very forgiving and will agree she would miss her friend. You could offer the following suggestion to her ‘Why not tell your friend that when she does not play with you that you are sad and you miss her’. Of course if a child is being bullied in any way that is a different matter and I will discuss this issue in another article. Why this encourages emotional intelligence: • Children need to express their feelings, but they also need to know how to find solutions to problems. That takes practice and modelling on your part as the parent. • For younger children just knowing there’s a name for their feelings is a support to help them the emotions that flood them. Take Into Your Heart Tip! When parents provide the above suggestions to a child he or she will experience the following They are SEEN They feel SOOTHED They feel SAFE They feel SECURE (Daniel Siegel) When you teach children emotional intelligence, how to recognize their feelings, understand where they come from and learn how to deal with them, you teach them the most essential skills for their success in life. Research shows that children who understand their feelings and learn about their emotions have these advantages: - They form stronger friendships with other children.

You’re helping your child reflect on their experience and what happens to their feelings. Tip: Try not to take what they may say to you personally, ie,. ‘I hate you’, ‘You are always making me do that, how come you never ask Jack’. When you do not take what they say personally you stay calm. Children rarely mean what they in anger. Most of us have said something that we later regret! Later when your child is calm you can discuss the incident. Let’s take another example. If your child is upset say for example by having to deal with being rejected by a friend in school then try the following suggestions.

- They calm themselves down more quickly when they get upset. - They do better in school. - They handle their moods better and have fewer negative emotions. Anne Healy has an MA from the University of York in Play Therapy and is a Parent Advisor. She has worked with children and families for over thirty years. She lives and works in Dingle and offers play therapy to children aged 3 to 12 years and face to face or skype parenting advice. www.mindfulparentingadivce.ie 087 2486421.

Anam Cara Meeting Anam Cara is holding its monthly Parent Evening on Tuesday 12th of April from 19:30 to 21:00 in Recovery Haven 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Anam Cara Services are available free of charge to all bereaved parents.

1. Quickly check in with how you are feeling yourself. Does the child’s reaction to being upset provoke any strong feeling in you? For example being rejected yourself. If so acknowledge your feeling to yourself and then become emotionally available to your child. 30 West Kerry Live

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Eddie O’ Grady Carpal tunnel syndrome is a result of compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel along with the flexor digitorum profundus, flexor digitorum superficialis, and flexor pollicis longus tendons of the fingers. It is characterised by burning wrist pain with numbness or paresthesia in the areas supplied by the median nerve(thumb, index finger, middle finger, and inner side of ring finger). This can often be more severe at night. Risk factors include ; illnesses such as hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes ; repetitive work with hands and wrists ie. typing ; being overweight; and pregnancy. Sometimes what is perceived as carpal tunnel syndrome may be in fact more along the lines of thoracic outlet syndrome, where the muscles of the neck and shoulders have tightened up squeezing the median nerve. This area should not be ignored during assessment. Often the clinician only focuses on the wrist missing the true cause of the problem.

Basically if a nerve is squeezed or irritated at a specific point, anywhere along that nerve path is more susceptible to injury. Often in this case ‘’proper’’ deep tissue work and mobilisation of the neck and shoulder muscles/ joints can give massive relief to the pain and discomfort and allow the median nerve to heal and settle down. Postural correction exercises may also need to be looked at, if this appears to be a contributory factor.

cause, or at the very least look at your desk ergonomics(the position of your head/body/ arm/wrist/fingers etc. in relation to your desk, computer and chair while working/typing).

For actual carpal tunnel syndrome, mobilisation and stretching of the wrist joints/ ligaments/ tissues structures forming and surrounding the carpal tunnel can prove effective. Care needs to be taken not to further irritate the median nerve. This type of treatment would be my first port of call before trying something like a cortisone injection (which usually only provides short term if any relief) or surgery (last resort). Sometimes a night splint to keep the arm/ wrist in a straightened position can take the pressure off the median nerve and help promote healing. Icing the wrist area for 10 minutes every couple of hours may help along with the use of NSAIDs(non steroid anti-inflammatories). Obviously you would need to take a break from any repetitive movement of wrist and fingers if this is the

News from Camphill Dingle Christoph Jensen It has been a while since we reported on events from Camphill. We had our HIQA-inspection and received the subsequent report – and are now very busy catching up where we have not complied. A second inspection is on the cards. We very much hope that then our new house will be registered for our residents to move into. Meanwhile we are writing transition plans for the prospective residents – also for those moving into the houses in Cois Chnoic. The new house has received a name: Tearman na Soilse – Sanctuary of Light. A date for the official opening will be announced in due time. The landscaping is well on the way and the wheel-chair friendly concrete foot-paths have been decorated with beautiful laid-in mosaics. The Kudiabor-family has moved into the house and several community activities have taken place there, including the christening of baby Selma Kudiabor – and our Easter celebration and meal.

And please have a look at the web-site of Alan Creedon, who is walking from Manchester to Dingle, his home-town: http://walkforaoife.com/. Alan has chosen two charities for his sponsored 400 mile walk, one being Camphill Dingle. On the web-site Alan explains in a touching video why he is doing this walk and how anyone can get involved. Maybe there are some school-classes out there who would like to meet and walk with Alan for some kilometres? If so contact him at alanjcreedon@gmail.com ...

The week preceding the Easter-festival is always special in our community. Every morning some of us are creating a living picture of the events leading up to Good Friday and beyond. On Good Friday we helped cleaning the beaches at Beenbawn and Doonsheen. On Saturday March 19th we were invited to the web-site launch of The Ring of The Atlantic Gold Coast Cycle Event at O’Connors Bar in Cloghane. It s a charity cycle tour in aid of Camphill Community Dingle and is scheduled for July 23rd. It promises to be a very scenic 72km ride starting and finishing in Cloghane.

Alan Creedon News just in: Alan wants to row across the Irish Channel ... follow the events also on his face-book site ... ... and with Easter having passed our stall will be at the Dingle Friday Market again.

Alliums’ Pungent Power will make you Weep with Joy!

Introduction to the Japanese Healing System – Reiki by Regina O’Mahony (Reiki Master) Sunday 3rd April at 7pm (Free talk – everyone welcome)

Irene Ní Fhlannúra Although there are more than 500 plants which fall into the Allium category, not all are edible and we are more accustomed to garlic, wild garlic, onions, shallots, scallions, leek and chives. In fact, there is little need to go searching for any more as these potent foods provide more than enough in terms of flavour and health-giving properties. We are so familiar with these plants it is easy to overlook their benefits in favour of more exotic plants. Allium vegetables are robust, pungent and luckily for us, plentiful for most part of the year. Onions and garlic can be dried and stored for use outside the growing season – giving us year round access to their potent powers! Allium vegetables have a long history as a traditional medicine in nearly all parts of the globe. These plants have antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal components to protect the plant from microorganisms in the soil that attack its bulb, leaves and stalks. Once activated, they prove to be a powerful weapon against threats, which is probably why these plants enjoy such a robust existence and the ability to grow in a wide range of environments. Whatever about keeping micro bugs at bay, the pungent power of garlic has been known to keep vampires away too such is its protective powers! Research into the health properties of alliums, particularly, garlic and onions shows benefit to cardiovascular health and circulation. They have a cleansing effect on blood, helping reduce bad cholesterol, prevent blood clots and reduce the stickiness of blood improving circulation and reducing the risk of stroke and thrombosis. For this reason, caution is recommended for those taking blood-thinning drugs and using mega-doses of garlic supplements. If in doubt, ask your health practitioner for reasonable guidelines. Food state garlic and onions may still be included in your diet in most cases. More common to most of us, colds and flus can also be prevented and treated with this group of vegetables, in particular onions and garlic. When there is shivering and blocked nose and sinuses, a rich onion and garlic soup provides welcome relief and will ease congestion rapidly. Also, for those with allergies such as hayfever, another active component of onions, quercetin, can reduce symptoms such as runny nose and watery eyes. It is no coincidence that onions can provoke watery eyes when handling them yet are an age-old remedy for that very symptom. Mother Nature has a sense of humour! The components of alliums that have been researched and demonstrated positive anti-cancer activity include organosulfur compounds, allylsulfides, allicin and quercetin – found in most allium plants in varying strengths depending on the plant. Organosulfur compounds have shown benefit to the liver and detoxification pathways and quercetin has also been investigated for its anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Alliums pack great ammunition against cancerous cells – aids the immune system to identify and destroy cancerous cells, promotes cancer cell death and inhibits tumour growth. Also as a free radical scavenger, alliums are protective against carcinogenic agents in food, water and the environment. They help remove toxic carcinogenic substances, e.g. nitrosamines from processed meat products, over-grilled meats and tobacco. Their antimicrobial activity offers immune support from bacterial, fungal and viral attacks, particularly for those who have compromised immunity due to illness and/or medications. Alliums are easily incorporated into the diet and give great flavour and aroma to most dishes. Alliums can be eaten raw once washed carefully and any loose dirt removed. They can also be used in cooking because much of their health benefits are not destroyed with heat. It is recommended that when using alliums to allow them to rest for a few minutes after cutting or crushing before adding heat or acid (lemon juice or vinegar) to them. This allows the allicin component to reach its maximum potential. Wild garlic which is prolific at the moment until the end of April is Nature’s offering of a great all-rounder as a food remedy. Flowers, leaves and stems can be used in soups, added to mashed potato and rice dishes or whizzed in a blender to make pesto. Wild garlic has almost 5 times more allicin than the cultivated common garlic which means a little can go a long way in terms of heart health and cancer protection. With one out of every two Irish citizens destined to develop heart disease and one out of every three at risk of developing cancer it’s no wonder Mother Nature provides us with a bumper crop year after year! 34 West Kerry Live

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Bhí lá mór ceiliúradh ar an mBuailtín Domhnach Cásca ag comóradh Éirí amach na Cásca. B’é an t-Athair Tomás ó hIceadha atá anois sna naochadaí a nocht leacht breá i gcuimhne ar Sheachtar Fhorógra na Cásca agus an duine is fiche a thug Trá Lí ortha féin le bheith páirteach san Éirí Amach. Mar a dúirt Séamus ó Dúbhain ón bhFearann, ‘más é ár lá, ‘sé ár lá é’. Ní raibh aon rian don eagla air ná ar a cháirde. Dúirt an t-Athair ó hIceadha agus é ag nochtadh an leachta agus á bheannú, murach Éirí Amach na Cásca go mbeadh thiar fós arainn, mar ná raibh aon chuimheamh ag Sasana ar aon rian saoirse a thabhairt fiú ‘Home rule’, go raibh na h’Aondachtóirí sa Tuaisceart go láidir ina choinnibh. “Lá mór inár saol an lá inniu’” ar sé. Bhain an slua breá a bhí cruinnithe ag an leacht agus istigh ón anaithe in Óstan Cheann Sibéal an- shásamh as an lá. Léig Noelí Ó Maoileoin Forógra na Cásca, go láidir grinn buacach. Léig Seosaim Ó Conchúir ainmneacha na Laoch a thug an bóthar go Trá Lí ortha féin go ceannasach cruinn agus chas an t-amhránaí Páidí ‘Mhárthain’ mac Gearailt, an t-amhrán Ráiteachas na Tarraingreachta go fuadrach muiníneach. Chuir an saoi-fhear Feargal mac Amhlaoidh sásamh aigne ar chách lena shár cheol ar na píobaí. Is diail an cúl taca Feargal aon uair a bhíonn gá leis. Fear uasal. D’aithris Cait Ní Ghearailt ó Bhaile an Mhúraigh atá pósta le Parthalán Ó Loinsigh ó Chill Fiontain, dán álainn a chúm sí agus í ina scoláire óg i gColáiste Ide caoga bliain ó shin. Seod do dhán. Beidh sé againn dibh sara fada. Bhí sé do ghlanmheabhair ag Cáit. Bhí go leor gaolta dár laochra i láthair don ócáid. Gabhadh buíochas leo siúd a bhí bainteach leis an ócaid a eagrú, ag áireamh Tomás ó Crualaíoch a bhí i mbun is i mbárr gach a mbain leis an ócaid, agus baill do Chonradh na Gaeilge ina measc Seósaimh Ó Conchúir, Páidí ‘Mhárthain, an bhean éachtach Máire Ní Shíthigh, Berní Uí Chonchúir agus Siobhán Uí Luasa. Is mó uair a sheas Siobhán an fód Lá le Pádraig don gConradh ina haonar. Gael dílis. Gabhadh buíochas le Seán Ó Catháin, cathaoirleach Bord Bainistíochta Scoil an Fhirtéaraigh agus baill an bhoird as láthair. a chur ar fáil don leacht. Siad Gearóid Mistéal agus David Flannery a dhein an tsaoirseacht go críochnúil néata. Is í Craobh áitiúil do Chonradh na Gaeilge a eagraigh an ócaid. Bhí deirtear, cúigear nó seisear don seachtar a shínigh Forógra na Cásca ina mbaill gníomhacha do Chonradh an Gaeilge. Seo dán beag ag comóradh na Laoch:

Agus mé ag tagairt dos na gaolta d’ár nÓglaigh féin dúirt Eibhlín Ní Chíobhain ón nGráig liom go raibh sean-aintin di féin, Eibhlín Ní Éigearta ó Mhúscraí i gCumann na mBan agus an- ghníomhach i gCogadh na Saoirse ach ná raibh aon rian comóradh déanta uirthi, ‘mar ‘atá anso’ ar sí. Is mó san laoch a leigeadh i ndearmad, ach anois an t-am le aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh. Seo iad na hÓglaigh a aithris Seasaimh ó Conchúir a thaistil go Trá de shiúl cos um cháisc 1916 ón nGaeltacht: Seán Ó Muircheartaigh agus Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh, deartháracha. Gallarus. Liam Ó Muirthile, Baile na nGall. Pádraig Ó Briain, Ardán an Bhrianaigh, O.S. a chuaidh isteach Dé Domhnaigh ar a rothar.

Laochra Canaimís dán dár laochra gan cháim Nochtadh an leac i gcuimhne na ndaoine a shiúl ó Bhaile an Fheirtéirigh go Trá Lí Domhnach Cásca 1916, faoin ngaoth.

D’adhnadar an spré go buacadh sa bhearna A las mar ré ar bhánta is ar árdaibh Go dílis go fáilteach, i gcruatan ó pháinigh Is choíche a ngártha máirfidh ‘nár mbrádaibh. Dublin Burning:

2015

The Easter Rising from behind the Barricades le W.J. Brennan-Whitmore foilsithe ag Gill Books ‘Dublin Burning is a vivid, clear-eyed account of the 1916 Rising and is the most complete account we have from a senior participant. No other senior Volunteer figure has left a similar memoir of Easter Week. Commandant W.J. Brennan-Whitmore was officer commanding the Volunteer position at the head of North Earl Street, an outworking of the GPO garrison. Its purpose was to delay and frustrate any attempt by the British to deploy reinforcements coming from Amiens Street railway station (now Connolly). Commandant Brennan-Whitmore and his men held this position for over seventy-two hours until forced out by British artillery. He and his troops attempted to retreat northwards through the slums, hoping to reach the safety of the suburbs. But he and his men were not Dubliners and were unfamiliar with the city. They were captured in a tenement where they had taken refuge and were interned in Frongoch in Wales until 1917.
