The Great Famine in West Kerry 1845-52 A lecture by Dr. Shane Lehane Lecture venue: Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle. Date: Thursday, 26th May, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome This lecture begins by discussing the social and economic conditions prevalent in West Kerry on the eve of the famine where poverty was widespread and the vast majority of the poor dependent on the potato crop for daily survival. The arrival of the potato blight and the subsequent destruction of the potato crop had profound consequences. By 1847, West Kerry was enormously impacted by death, sickness, starvation and emigration. The enactment of the Irish Poor Law Extension Act in the summer of 1847 heralded a new and even greater period of deprivation as manifested by the increasing numbers seeking wither indoor or outdoor relief. Taking the 1851 census at face value, Dingle poor law union lost more of its population (-23.7%) than any other poor law union in Co. Kerry.

Dr. Shane Lehane is a native of Tralee and a graduate of University College Cork. (BA, M.Phil, Higher Dip. Education, PhD.) he has taught at second level and has lectured in Irish history with the American International College, Massachusetts, Ireland - Dingle programme here in Dingle. Shane has been the recipient of a postgraduate research scholarship from the Trustees' of Muckross House, Killarney for research on the Great Famine in Kerry and was awarded a first class M.Phil degree in 2005 for a thesis on the Great Famine in the Dingle and Killarney poor law unions. Shane subsequently completed a Ph.D thesis in UCC on a history of the Irish Red Cross in 2014.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 17th May the Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema will screen the crime thriller “Triple 9”. Featuring the talents of

Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet the film follows a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist. The only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down”. Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck, action-packed finale filled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.

The following week on Tuesday 24th May the feature will be the biographical film of the life of jazz musician Miles Davis. Starring Don Cheadle the film is not just about the music. It’s about what we all face at one time or another in our lives; questions about who we really are, what we have to say and how will we say it. How will we ultimately be defined and who gets to say so? Mile Ahead is an indispensable meditation on the pain of pure creativity.

The Phoenix cinema Dingle will have two special screenings of The Uncountable Laughter of The Sea on 18th & 19th May at 6pm. The film is a meditative cinematic journey, a poetic visual hymn, over certain subjects in life: peace of mind, serenity, sustainability, and loss. Shot in Kerry, the film has at its centre language, landscape and light. Dingle’s Monsignor Padráig Ó’Fiannachta, a distinguished linguist, scholar and poet, acts as the guide through the various aspects of our rich natural and cultural heritage. Both the English and Irish language play a prominent role in the narrative, as well as occasional quotations from Latin and Greek epic poems. Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on the environment is read from by narrator Kelsey Lang McCarthy. The Sunday Independent gives the film a 4 star review saying, “This is an hour-long immersion into something ethereal, woozy and visually unforgettable. A mediative film up there with Baraka” Indeed President Michael D Higgins was gushing in his praise of the film describing it as “a beautiful and moving piece, ... a wonderful piece of work” 6 West Kerry Live

I was particularly impressed with the Street Parade and really enjoyed the Pudding and Poetry session in the state of the art Dingle Cookery School. Over 1000 people of all ages took part in the 2nd annual Darkness Into Light Walk in Dingle this year. Just heard that Jack Kennedy has been named Radio Kerry’s Sports Star of the month and an honour well deserved indeed by this quiet and unassuming young man. If only he would lets us know in advance when he is due to ride a good outsider to victory we could all celebrate his talents !!! Comhgairdeachas Jack. Tidy Towns Work Evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. The work plan is to help the Ard na Greine and Cois Coille residents on Tuesday May 17th and work in Upper Main Street from the Credit Union on May 24th.We hope residents in these areas will come out in force to help improve their own streets and estates. Some thoughtless chickens succeeded in upending one of our prized flower tubs at the rear of the Cinema and tossing it into the Mall River. A rather disappointing sight I must say just as the flowers were coming into bloom and the time spent in repairing the damage could be put to better use in other areas.Should anyone have any information on the culprits I would have no problem in seeing them brought to justice in the building further up the opposite side of the Mall. Details of more upcoming events and activities for the next few weeks are mentioned elsewhere in this issue so get out there and get involved if at all possible and enjoy the buzz. Slan !!!

Hake, Poached Fennel, Pearl Barley, Lemon Purée Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is a fantastic recipe for hake. At first it may seem a little complicated but if you break it down into sections it is not at all difficult. Give it a try; it is well worth it in the end! 180g hake per person rapeseed oil dash of white wine salt and pepper For the fennel & pearl barley Poaching liquid:

150ml fish stock

75ml of white wine

1 lemon, zested

1 star anise

1 fennel bulb, cut into thin slices 120g pearl barley handful of chopped dill or fennel ½ lemon, juiced salt and pepper for the lemon purée 5 lemons 1 tbsp. cream 25g sugar 20ml olive oil 20g butter salt Method For the Fish Preheat the oven to 160ºC. Sprinkle some of the oil on a tray, season the fish and place it on the tray, skin side up. Add a dash of wine and place this in the oven to cook for about 6-10 minutes depending on the size of the fish. Test it with a knife and once you feel that it is almost cooked turn off the oven and allow the fish to continue cooking from the heat of the oven. For the fennel & pearl barley Heat the poaching liquid gently and allow this to cook for about 5 minutes. Turn down the heat, add the fennel and cook this very gently for about 10 minutes. Add the pearl barley and continue to cook for a further 10 minutes. Once it is cooked, remove the star anise, add the chopped herbs and season with lemon juice, salt and pepper. For the lemon purée Peel the lemons and keep the skin. Juice all of the lemons and keep for later. Place the lemon peelings in cold water and bring to a boil. Once it has boiled discard the water and repeat this process 5 times (this is to remove the bitterness and soften the skin). Transfer the lemon skin to a blender and add the cream, sugar and oil while it is blending. Add about half of the lemon juice. Blend in the cold butter. Taste and add more lemon juice if required. To serve Place the cooked fish on the centre of the plate. Spoon some of the pearl barley and fennel on one side of the fish. Spread some of the lemon purée one the other side of the fish.

Department Issues Reminder for Basic Payment Scheme Application Deadline 16 May 2016 Farmers are once again reminded that the closing date for the acceptance of applications for this years’ Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), is Monday 16 May. Farmers should ensure that they lodge their applications by 16th May in order to avoid penalties that must be applied where applications are received late. Given the significance of the Basic Payment to farm income, it is imperative that farmers allow themselves enough time to complete the form accurately and to make sure it is submitted on time. In relation to online applications, it should be noted that higher rates of online applications lead to increased efficiency in the processing of applications and the subsequent issuing of payments. Farmers may submit their application using the on-line facility themselves or through an authorised agent via www.agfood.ie. For further information and assistance please contact the on-line application lo-call Helpdesk at 0761 064424. This year, the Department is also implementing a system of preliminary checks for online applicants only. Essentially these checks will allow farmers the opportunity to address any dual claims, over claims and overlaps identified on online applications within specified time frames after the BPS closing date without penalty. Given the importance of the May 16th deadline, the Department has put in place a number of additional supports for farmers and agents as follows: To assist farmers applying online, one to one assistance is available for any farmer who wishes to obtain guidance in applying for their BPS online. Department staff will be available to offer this service to farmers at the Department’s office at Government Buildings in Portlaoise. A dedicated telephone helpdesk is also available during normal office hours to assist farmers applying on line. The helpdesk can be contacted at 0761 064424. In addition, this helpdesk will also be available to farmers applying online until Friday 13th May until 9 pm each night and on both Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May from 9am to 5pm Finally, the Portlaoise office will be open until midnight on the application deadline of Monday 16th May. These extended hours will facilitate the acceptance of paper applications and the extended provision of one to one assistance for farmers applying online. New Minister for Agriculture

a direct aid package co-funded by the European Commission is one such measure and I am very pleased that we are in a position to match these EU funds with National funding. In the dairy sector, today’s payments are a €1,000 top-up to almost 1,500 young farmers who were successful applicants under the Department’s Young Farmer Scheme. This complements the payments to over 17,600 farmers in December. In the pig sector, there are almost 300 approved applications for aid, and payments of €3,300 to each participant have commenced this week. The current market difficulties are more prolonged than anybody envisaged and it’s important that any measures taken are meaningful for producers in difficulty. I will work with Commissioner Hogan, who I am meeting this week, and other EU Ministers for Agriculture to ensure that the EU response is appropriate and can deliver the required response to help producers through these difficulties. Today’s payments mark Ireland out as one of the few EU member states to have drawn down their allocation to date and together with the Government’s top-up will provide some practical assistance to farmers.” Launch of National Animal Health Surveillance Programme Website The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine recently hosted the ‘Animal Health Surveillance Forum’ which is the first of its kind to be held in Ireland. The Forum is a unique opportunity to bring together experts in the field of surveillance, and a wide range of stakeholders involved in different aspects of surveillance. The goal is simple; we want to be recognised as a world leader in animal health. Production systems which are based on strict animal health and welfare standards improve business confidence in agri-food investment by reducing disease risk whilst protecting the consumer and improving consumer confidence. In this regard, animal health surveillance is a key and critical component. The Conference, which was opened by Aidan O’Driscoll Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, saw a host of Animal Health Surveillance experts, from both Ireland and abroad, delivered a series of presentations on the topic of disease surveillance and it’s importance to the Ireland’s Agri Food Business. The keynote address was delivered by Dirk Pfeiffer, Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, London who is recognized as a world leader in this area. Professor Pfeiffer presented a paper on the international perspectives of animal health surveillance.

We must say goodbye to a man who over the past five years, it must be said, did his utmost to improve the lot of the farming community in Ireland. Though not always in agreement with him, It must be acknowledged that he never put himself first, and always did whatever was in his power to solve problems. He was particularly pro-active in the fodder crisis, a number of years ago, and in the IFA salary scandal that rocked the organisation. It this case he stood for the farmers benefit, and had a good working relationship with the new IFA President. We wish him luck in his new Housing Portfolio.

This was followed by an interactive session, where the attendees provided their feedback on Animal Health Surveillance in Ireland. The Forum aimed to highlight the need for greater coordination and collaboration amongst the stakeholders in this area, which would allow the Department to build on the good work that is already being done.

The new Minister is welcomed, and alot is expected of him, as he has a decent sized pair of shoes to fill. It is up to him now to meet with the EU Agriculture Commissioner, Mr Hogan, and hammer out the best deal for Irish Agriculture, possible. The agriculture, food and the marine sectors are key economic drivers for Ireland and we all must recognise the essential role it plays in providing employment and economic development in rural areas in particular. Having represented a primarily rural/farming community and constituency as a Dail Deputy, the agri sector should be an area close to his heart.

The website contain information on Ireland’s status in relation to listed animal diseases and on the active surveillance programmes currently being implemented in Ireland. The site also contains useful information on animal health and animal disease legislation, along with convenient links to surveillance related publications and other relevant websites. The website will provide increased transparency and accessibility of information on animal health for stakeholders in Ireland and abroad.

Dept of Agriculture Announces Payments to Dairy and Pig Farmers Michael Creed TD the newly appointed Minister at the Department of Agriculture has confirmed that payments under the direct aid package for the dairy and pig sectors are now issuing to farmers. These payments are the final tranche under the package agreed at EU level in September of last year which allocated €13.7m for Ireland. The Government subsequently matched this funding to provide an overall aid package of €27.4m He said that he was working to make farm incomes one of his key priority, and that he was very aware that both the Irish dairy and pig sectors were under pressure at present as a result of current market difficulties. He continued: “For this reason the Irish Government has sought a number of measures to be taken at EU level to help to stabilise the market and provide some cash flow assistance to hard pressed farmers. The allocation of 12 West Kerry Live

To coincide with the conference the National Animal Health Surveillance Programme website was launched on the same day. Jarlath O’Connor, a Superintending Veterinary Inspector with the Department, gave a presentation on the new website at the Forum.

Good animal health surveillance systems are key to maintaining Ireland’s animal health status. Since 2007, the EU in its Animal Health Strategy (2007-2013) aims to promote animal health by placing greater emphasis on preventive measures, and disease surveillance, in order to reduce the incidence of animal diseases and to minimise the impact of outbreaks when they do occur. 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the First Statute in Ireland, enacted in 1866, dealing with the control of “Contagious Diseases Amongst Cattle and other Animals in Ireland”. The 1866 Act also signified the establishment of the first organised veterinary response to epizootic disease with the establishment of the Veterinary Department of Ireland with Professor Hugh Ferguson as the first Director General. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

matter of time till the dam breaks and the waters adjust to new levels.

Tuesday, May 20. Heard the first cuckoo of the year this morning in the townland of Farren, near Ballyferriter, and the swallows have been around for a few weeks but still no sign of a fine spell. There are clouds sitting on Mount Eagle every day - a sure sign of rain and a regular halo around the sun is another sure sign of rain on the way.

By Ted Creedon Monday, May 12, 1986. The Ballyferriter co-op glasshouses produced 926 boxes of tomatoes today, just under five tons - something of a record - but prices have suddenly dropped from £7.50 per box to £5.50, a loss of over £1,850 in a single day. It’s all due to the Chernobyl disaster. People in Europe are afraid to eat fresh vegetables and are going for tinned produce.

Wednesday, May 14.

Friday, May 23. The bad weather continues - cold, wet and windy. Our apple trees are beginning to flower at last but our birch tree has only a few leaves and no buds - hope it recovers. All this bad weather for almost a year now is being blamed in Halley’s Comet which is speeding away from Earth and will not be seen again by anyone over 25 now unless some longevity drug is discovered in the meantime.

Had an invitation in the post from Senior Council Dermot Kinlen to the unveiling of a marble panda in Sneem on Saturday by Mr. Ling Quing, former Chinese ambassador to the United Nations. The panda is a gift to the people of Ireland in memory of the late President Ó Dálaigh.

Mrs. Kate Farrell, nee Prendeville, of Garynadur, Lispole, now 83 years of age recalls that in the year following Halley’s Comet’s last visit, in 1911, there was very bad weather with frequent hail showers in the summer months.

Rang Dermot and said we’d be there. ‘Bring the whole family and anybody else too’ he said. Typical Dermot - generous to a fault.

To combat falling tomato prices, due to the Chernobyl disaster, the Ballyferriter co-op are putting large stickers on every box going to market which state; ‘ This product has been grown in a glasshouse in IRELAND and is GUARANTEED FREE from radioactive contamination.’

Met with Bob Herbst and Billy Goodwin of the Maharees Regatta CommitProprietors: Melanie Brosnan & Elaine Higgins tee. They are concerned that the Brendan Festival regatta is on collision course with the Maharees event on June 22. They were a little shocked by the strength of an article on the collision in today’s issue of The Kerryman. I told them it should all have been sorted out months ago. They said their regatta will go ahead on that date as planned and the fact that it incorporates the All-Ireland this year should ensure its success. I still believe that the mess could be avoided if both committees got together now. Saturday, May 17. Took the family to Sneem for the unveiling of the marble panda. It lashed rain while the VIPs went through the ceremony so we stayed in the car the whole time. Then drove to Dermot’s summer house at Kinlough. Around 150 people had decided to avail of his invitation to lunch and Dermot overstepped his hospitality on this occasion. There was absolute chaos on the narrow road to his house and gardaí were drenched trying to get everyone parked. We braved our way to the house - getting soaked en route - only to find a queue outside the door. We took shelter in the garage where a chef was busy slicing up cold turkey and ham. So we left and had a snack in a small cafe in Sneem.

Monday, May 19. The proposed referendum on divorce is taking up a lot of the country’s time these days with constant debates and arguments, for and against, being beamed at us through the media and in pamphlet form through the letterbox. A change in the Constitution is being sought to allow couples whose marriages have broken down the chance to make a new life or, at least, to find a better form of existence than that which they are now experiencing. Whatever the outcome of this referendum I believe it’s only a 14 West Kerry Live

CAMP NOTES Brigid O’ Connor The ScairbhínThe Scairbhin, translated from the Irish means - Garbh Mí na Gcuach, the harsh month of the cuckoo sees all kinds of weather, 15th April – 15th May. Certainly living up to its description this year, hail, rain and sunshine all on the one day ! Big Win For Annascaul Castleisland Mart Premier Championship – Round 1. Annascaul defeated Renard in The Paddy Kennedy Memorial Park, Annascaul on Sunday last. This was a very important game for both sides in the competition as only the winners would progress to the quarter final stage, due to be played this coming weekend Sunday May 8th away to Na Gaeil, Tralee. The first quarter was tit for tat when Annascaul’s James Crean opened the scoring two minutes in, to be answered by Renard’s midfielder Marcus Sugrue and Eoin O’Neill for the visitors. Annascaul’s Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy and Jason Hickson slotted over within the opening ten minutes to take the lead of two points for Annascaul. The second quarter was a different story entirely with goals exchanged within minutes of one another. Renard’s Killian Young found Maurice O’Neill who landed the ball safely in the net for the visitors, where Annascaul’s James Crean scored an equalising point right away and Genie Farrell didn’t miss the opportunity when he landed the ball in Shane Foley’s space and Foley scored putting his side three points up! This was followed by points from Renard’s Eoin O’Neill and Marcus Sugrue and Annascaul’s James Crean. Renard substituted wing forward Daragh Fitzgerald with Brian O’Sullivan, late in the first half. With tampering winds and missed opportunities late in the first half by both teams, the half time mark didn’t show a huge difference between the sides and all was to play for. Half time score Annascaul 1-06 Renard 1-04.

The second half was not as entertaining for the visitors who managed to add only 3 points to their tally, 2 from frees awarded. Annascaul on the other hand made changes at the half way mark and brought on James Farrell and David Smith. Emmett Kennedy opened the scoring for the home side and both Annascaul’s Jason Hickson and James Crean impressed with 10 points between them in this half. However, Renard dug deep with a missed opportunity on goal to be swept away by Annascaul’s Eoghan O’ Neill. Furthermore, Renard’s Robert Wharton slotted over Renard’s only point from play in this half and with 30 minutes on the clock Conor O’Leary made their final attempt on goal- only once again to be swept away by Annascaul’s defensive backs! Annascaul ran out winners on a score line of Annascaul 1-17, Renard 1-07. Annascaul Team : Tommy Pierce, Eoin Curry, Eoghan O Neill, Gearoid O Shea, Colm Barry, Andrew Finn, Ger Farrelly, Niall McKenna, Emmett Kennedy 0-03, David Clifford, Jason Hickson 0-06, Eamonn Hickson, Genie Farrell, James Crean 0-07, Shane Foley 1.01. Yes with no sunshine, –ic" 9 p.m. Inner Strength; Thursday: 8 – 9 p.m. you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Computer Matters You Were Only Spoofing

Joan Maguire In the context of network security, a spoofing attack is a situation in which one person or program successfully masquerades as another by providing false data.

West Kerry Youth Clubs would like to thank the KDYS and NEWKD for their support and making sure that all our youth clubs remain open for many years. We would also like to thank Junior Leaders, Leaders and Parents for their support.

When your email or your domain name are spoofed, it means that other people, generally not with good intentions, are using this email as their own. Spammers can use your domain name to create new emails and use them to send spam to people.

This might seem incredible, but it is the case. Recently there was a series of emails sent out from seai@esb.ie informing people that were entitled to a rebate. At first glance it looked quite genuine, but ESB and SEAI are not the same organisation, and as I do not receive my ESB bills online, I presume this to be a scam. Somebody, somewhere was sending out an email as if they were sending it from the ESB, how is this possible? This can happen because the email system as a technology allows anyone to send an email with any sending address they wish. Most email servers will check to ensure that the email genuinely originated from the presented domain, however not all will perform this check and allow the emails to be sent and received. Most sent in this way should be flagged as spam when received by others, but not always. According to the experts " Regrettably there's no real way to prevent this from happening due to the nature of the email system. However, you should always be vigilant with your online security - ensure that your password is secure and your system is clear of viruses just in case". Should you start to receive a lot of messages saying that unfamiliar emails from your domain are being returned, then you can turn off the catch all emails switch on your domain. Speak to the person who provides you with hosting about this. As we increase our dependence on technologies to carrry out our daily business we need to be alert and aware so that we can enjoy the benefits safely.

Féile na Bealtaine 2016 From Top Left: The Oiche Bealtaine Celebrations, the Sunday parade, Lá na bPáistí, The Girl with the Pearl Earring

An Post Rás 2016 Patrick Fitzgerald An Post RÁS 2016 will be travelling through Kerry this year. On Tuesday 24th of May, Stage 3 starts in Charleville and finishes in Dingle. On Wednesday 25th of May, Stage 4 starts in Dingle and finishes in Sneem. On Thursday 26th of May, Stage 5 starts in Sneem and finishes in Clonakilty.

Paudie also went to the Melbourne Olympics that year but unfortunately was stopped and arrested on the starting line along with his teammates as Team Ireland was not recognised by the International Olympic Council. The last time the RÁS was here was 10 years ago to mark the 50th anniversary of his win and they wanted to return once more for this milestone. - Patrick Fitzgerald – Fitzgerald’s Centra Dingle - Chairperson Local Organising Committee – An Post RÁS 2016

The riders in An Post RÁS are expected into Dingle town at 1.15pm having made it’s way over the Conor Pass. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase our beautiful countryside to the wider cycling community and promote Kerry as the number 1 Cycling Destination in Ireland. Preparation work for An Post RÁS 2016 began last autumn with the securing of accommodation for the participants and extended Teams and An Post RÁS 2016 organisers here in Kerry. The local authorities have been assisting with traffic management and repair works if needed to the route. Traffic restrictions will be in place from 1.15pm to 3.45pm. An Post RÁS 2016 Stage End Co-Ordinator Séamus Domegan has tasked me with looking after Stage 3 finish in Dingle. I along with a little Organising Committee are trying to ensure that the Stage Finish in Dingle will be one of the most memorable. 2016 is a special year in Irish History but it is also a special year in RÁS history. Alan's Long Walk To Dingle

Last Friday, May 8, Alan Creedon began walking from his home in Manchester to his native Dingle in memory of his sister Aoife who died five years ago. "I'm heading southwest through the Cheshire countryside and on to Wales, staying with friends and camping as I go. I'm hoping to reach Anglesey on Sunday, May 15," he told West and mid- Kerry Live this week. The month-long trek includes crossing the Irish Sea by kayak next Monday or Tuesday if weather conditions are suitable. "I'll be meeting up with Mike Armstrong, Senior Instructor with the Outward Bound Trust over here, who volunteered to help me cross the Irish Sea in a double kayak. Mike is descended from Grace O'Malley (Gránuaile) and loves sea kayaking along the Mayo coast," he explained. The sea crossing from North Wales to Dún Laoghaire is expected to take around 20 hours. The kayak will have GPS tracking, VHF radio, charts and a satellite phone for coverage in VHF blackspots. "The whole idea behind this challenge is to raise funds for two charities, Manchester Mind and the Dingle Camphill Community. We held a ten-hour fund-raising concert and dance in a community hall in Manchester last week with three excellent bands who played for free. There was plenty of food and drink and it was a great community occasion," Alan said. Alan's sister, Siún, flew in from Prague to help out at the event which raised almost £1,000, bringing the total raised so far for Manchester Mind to well over £5,250. Donations on the website www.walkforaoife.com for the Camphill Community have reached €1,100. "I will be posting updates on the website as I go and there is also a Walk for Aoife Facebook page which people can view for updates," he said.

Camphill News Betsie Konink The past few weeks have been flying by, filled with activities: we had a really lovely Ascencion day outing with the whole community last Thursday to the Gap of Dunloe, and in the beginning of May the wonderful Bealtaine festival with its parade, concerts, performances and exhibitions which we all greatly enjoyed and not to forget the catering for the cycle challenge, which had more participants as ever and kept us really busy baking cakes and on the day making teas and coffees.

The new workshop is a hive of activity. Our 2 friends, Ernst and Phil, from a Camphill Community in England, are back for two weeks to build storage space for the weaving workshop. And outside the new buildings the grass is slowly growing, and the first trees and bushes are planted. And today the plastic on the big tunnel was fixed so now we do have again a proper indoor garden workshop. Though our new house is still not registered, we can already use it for day time activities, and for the past 3 weeks we had a massage room, used by a visiting masseur, and also the weaving workshop in there and it is also a great space for birthday parties, dancing, yoga, meetings, music sessions, concerts and other community events. There are still some legal problems with the purchase of the town houses but we really hope that in the coming weeks these issues can be solved. Last Friday Alan Creedon started his 400 mile walk from Manchester to Dingle, he will be kayaking over the Irish sea and arriving in Dingle in the beginning of June, all this in aid of Camphill Dingle and a charity in Manchester. Truly amazing! You can follow his progress on www.walkforaoife.com Really good news is that we now have a new person in charge: Bryan Gallagher, who has a lot of experience with the HIQA standards and will help us with getting registered.

Celebrating Singing Bert McCann As the summer kicks in the Annascaul Singing Club is spreading its wings a wee bit. Over the Whit Bank Holiday, 3rd - 5th June, the club will host a gathering, 'Celebrating Singing' to mark its first birthday. With the help of Kerry County Council's Arts Office and kind support from the wider community there will be series of free workshops and singing sessions taking place in Annascaul Village throughout that weekend. The music professionals who have agreed to lead the workshops are performers of some renown in their areas of expertise. Laine Henderson will take the voice tutorial on Saturday 4th June 10am-12noon, , bringing her wide experience including several years as lead vocalist with 'Riverdance'. Pat Johnson, singer-songwriter and formerly guitarist with reggae combo 'Avatar' will bring on Saturday from 3pm-5pm, an unrivaled understanding of his instrument and its potential in supporting singers in their work. A performance workshop will be guided by Niamh Varian-Barry on Sunday 5th June 1pm-3pm. Niamh is a highly-regarded performer and is especially known for her involvement with the folk supergroup 'Solas'. The classes are for adults of all abilities. Laine will encourage participants to know their own voice and find a particular style. In addition she will advise folk who bring a song in which they would particularly like to learn to sing. Niamh for her part will concentrate on voice technique and ornamentation, posture, and the creation of simple harmonies. Pat will focus on a range of questions that arise for guitarists/singers including how to choose the right instrument, light and shade in a song, choosing the right key and song dynamics.

Grey’s L ane Bistro Dingle

Though the classes are free the club asks people to book in advance. There are fifteen places available on the voice and performance sessions and twenty places for the guitar workshop. To book simply ring 083-1246634. During the weekend there will be free nightly sessions at Patcheen's Pub, Annascaul, Main Street with its customary open atmosphere. If you feel you want to sing, just do it. If you want to listen that's alright too. Storytellers and poets are welcome and there will be a few surprises too. A children's workshop is also planned and there will be visits by the Dingle Drummers, the town's Gospel choir and a trio of pipers from mid-Kerry. Annascaul Singing Club's Facebook page will post details of further guests. The Annascaul Singer's Club will of course have its usual monthly gathering on Thursday 19th May at Patcheen's Pub, Annascaul at 9pm. As always it's free and it's fun.

Don’t Call It A Miracle: Show Leicester Some Respect! Tadhg Evans It took 36 league games for Leicester City to clinch the Premier League title, but their wait for respect will go on a while longer. They could yet win the current edition of England’s primary football competition with more than a dozen points to spare. That would make them the tournament’s second most comfortable winners ever, even bettering Arsenal’s famed invincibles of 2003/04. They’re not as good as the invincibles, who had to hold off an emerging Chelsea outfit and a Manchester United squad with plenty successes behind and ahead of them. But should the Foxes be judged as 33/1 shots to repeat their heroics next season? Given that they’ve just won the league, and impressively so, might that price be even more outrageous than their 5,000/1 title odds ahead of their current, victorious campaign? Liverpool currently sit 22 points behind the new champions on the Premier League ladder, yet their chance of taking Leicester’s title in 2017 is rated at 11/1 – 22 points superior to Leicester’s quotation. Maybe the bookies feel they’ll get away with that jibe, based on the public’s response to Leicester’s victory. We’ve all rejoiced at the underdog breaking fastest from the traps, hammering hounds from minted kennels, and tearing the hare from its rail. But don’t construe the widespread delight for Leicester as respect, as it’s quite the opposite. You can call their season amazing, given that they’ve transitioned from relegation candidates to champions in the space of a year. You can say it’s remarkable that a club has made it from the third tier of English football to its summit well within the confines of a decade, because it is remarkable. But you want to follow the public, and even some respected journalists, in labelling Leicester’s win a miracle? Erra balls!

indispensable. Leicester probably won’t be successful in their title defence next year, but it’s stupid to suggest they could immediately go back to being relegation candidates unless a grand summer sale takes place in England’s east midlands. It’s important to notice that their fabulous form stretches back as far as a 2-1 win over West Ham last April. Leicester took 22 points from their last nine games of 2014/15, as they comfortably avoided relegation having previously been in a seemingly hopeless position. This story’s been going on for longer than most people realise – and its ending might be further off than most anticipate. Nope, we won’t see the likes of this again, but not for the reasons that everyone’s putting forward. It’s true to say that a 5,000-1 shot is never going to win the league again, but that’s only because bookmakers will never offer such figures again – or at least they shouldn’t. Because while the strength of the league’s top teams is weak in comparison to the trailblazers of years gone by, the league’s strength-in-depth has arguably never been greater. Ten years ago, a Premier League team ranked amongst the competition’s top five would have been expected to crush mid-table opposition. But now those middle-grounders have enough cash to purchase those with promise: Leicester purchased Kanté for £8 million, and Okazaki for £7 million, last summer. In 2005, the thought of a team that had just finished 14th in the league spending £15 million on respected performers from Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga would have been outrageous – but now those from the lower echelons can do that. That’s why Southampton are no joke, West Ham are respected, and folk take Stoke seriously. Everton’s squad would have been rated far superior to Leicester’s prior to 2015/16, and they have enough talent to climb far higher than the 12th rung that they’re currently resting their legs on. So even though we all want to believe in sporting miracles, we can’t even use Leicester’s 2015/16 campaign as proof of their existence – just because they were 5,000/1 shots doesn’t mean they should have been 5,000/1 shots.

Putting their seizure of the title down to divine intervention implies that this is something that ‘just happened’ for no apparent reason. But a competition that judges a team’s worth over a ten-month examination period isn’t going to tell many lies. Leicester have been excellent almost every time they’ve taken to a field this season. Their game plan is basic, but it’s one that suits their strengths perfectly: why would you not sit back and soak up before striking, if you’re really good at counter-attacking? What’s primitive isn’t necessarily bad – don’t scrawl complexities on a blackboard if you’ve a feeling you’ll arrive at the wrong answer. The pace of public disrespect for Leicester is at least slowing. During Jamie Vardy’s incredible goal-scoring run nearer the season’s start, they were wrongly chastised for being a ‘one-man team’, before a few finally copped that Riyad Mahrez could play a bit of ball as well. Then it became fashionable to admit that N’Golo Kanté was good. Wes Morgan was next to be praised. But when Vardy was clattered with a three-match suspension following a sending off against West Ham, the myth that Leicester are over reliant on the 29-year-old came into usage again. They then proceeded to score eight goals over the course of three Vardy-less games. Now people are finally finding it in themselves to utter the previously unutterable: ‘Leicester are a good team’. And ‘they’re a really good team’ might also get a bit of use, in time. Because with their win comes money, money that should bolster their solid product. They’re also under the guidance of a manager who understands how to handle what he’s inherited: good individual players, who function brilliantly as a unit. It’s that functionality that’s helped them humiliate teams like Manchester City, who’re mostly made up of stunning footballers who don’t gel to form a single entity. The cohesion that’s come from the chemistry between Leicester’s servicemen is 36 West Kerry Live

Bursitis

off the shelf orthotic may help in combination with treatment, by stabilising the heel, thus reducing heel to forefoot torsion on the plantar fascia. Certain taping techniques can also benefit by stabilising the foot further during the initial treatment stage. Although bursitis can be painful, it is not usually a serious condition. Redness in combination with swollen areas associated with bursitis can indicate infection and should be addressed by a doctor as a precautionary measure.

Eddie O’ Grady The body has a number of mechanisms that help cushion and lubricate joints and bones. One of these is called the bursa, a fluid-filled sac which separates, cushions and lubricates reducing the friction between two surfaces. These are found mostly near tendons, where the tendon glides over or between bony structures, especially within joint areas. In the process of protecting these structures, the bursa itself can sometimes become inflamed and swollen, a condition called “bursitis” . Causes of bursitis include 1. trauma or a blow to the area, 2. overuse of the tendons/muscles at the area, 3. prolonged pressure on areas like the elbow or knee from leaning on these areas for prolonged periods, 4. infection of the area. Some of the most common locations for bursitis include the shoulder (on the supraspinatus; muscle tendon under the acromium; elbow (olecranon bursitis); hip (the two most common are trochanteric bursitis in the outer hip and ischial bursitis in upper buttock region); knee(the main ones being, prepatellar bursitis over the kneecap bone also called ‘’housemaids knee’’, infrapatellar bursitis below the kneecap, pes aserine bursitis on the inner knee slightly below the medial collateral ligament, iliotibial bursitis on the outside of the knee between the IT band and the knee bone, and the back of the knee (known as baker’s cyst); heel (with plantar fasciitis; around Achilles tendon attachment known as ‘’Haglunds deformity’’; and at the base of your big toe often associated with a bunion. Bursitis usually occurs near joints that perform frequent repetitive movements. Treatment protocol varies slightly with different bursa, but in milder cases, a combination of 1. rest from the aggravating activity 2. compression with an icepack several times a day, 3. NSAIDs (non steroid anti-inflammatories), and 4. electro-acupuncture on the bursa can successfully treat the condition. Orthotics may need to be considered with plantar fas-

ciitis and bunions. In most cases, the bursitis pain goes away within a few weeks of proper treatment, but recurrent flare-ups of bursitis are common. In some of the more severe cases a doctor may need to aspirate the inflamed bursa of the fluid gathered therein, also injecting in a little cortisone to settle the inflammation and swelling. It is very important with any bursitis to treat the cause of the bursitis both during and after treatment. An example of this would be say in the case ‘’plantar fasciitis’’. If you get treatment or a cortisone injection into the inflamed bursa, the condition is unlikely to settle unless you correct the cause. In this case the cause may be flat feet leading to torsion between the heel and forefoot during movement, or it may be poor footwear, or even just poorly laced footwear. If the cause is flat feet, often a quality

Eating for the Time of Your Life! Irene Ní Fhlannúra As we get older, our nutritional needs change depending on age, activity levels, health status and the use of certain medications. Nutrition is an important determinant of health at any time in our lives, but the older population face additional challenges to meet their nutritional needs. The risk of dietary deficiencies increases as we age due to difficulties accessing and preparing nourishing meals, changes to our sense of taste, smell and appetite as well as hindered absorption of nutrients due to aging and certain prescription drugs. The food choices we make everyday hold the key to preventing and the management of many of age-related health problems as well as providing energy and sustenance to maintain a healthy, active and independent life. A Blast from the Past There is so much noise about what to eat and what not to eat nowadays that it is not uncommon to feel confused about food choices. Anyone over the age of 50 knows instinctively what real food is all about. It is the kind of fare you were reared on. Plain, simple ingredients – identifiable, seasonal and most likely picked, killed or caught just down the road! Despite immense changes in both food production and supply over the years, children today are carving out a lifetime of diet-related illnesses with their own knives and forks. Decades of fast food and fast talk has eroded our connection with Nature, the only source of true nourishment and replaced it dead, processed foods, which have neither life nor season. Thankfully, there is a shift towards healthier eating lately that has seen a return to the kitchen with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal and local produce. For the younger population, it has been met with the same enthusiasm as most other trends of our times, but for the older folk, it must offer some relief that real food, has made a welcome return to the table. Staying healthy as an older adult begins with connecting with your younger self, recalling those kitchen scenes, smells and tastes and trusting that what you learned then has as much, if not more, relevance today!

What about Supplements? If you were to believe everything you read about supplements you would be rattling with the volume of pills, capsules and potions marketed at the older population. As long as your diet is clean, green and consistently made up of fresh produce the need for supplements can then be based on any shortfalls arising due to the aging process itself. There is widespread evidence as we age we do need extra B vitamins, vitamin C, Omega 3, certain minerals and vitamin D. Vitamin D, in particular, as we cannot get enough through our food and generally, do not meet our vitamin D levels through sunshine exposure, yet vitamin D is needed for bone health, cardiovascular and mental health, immunity and the protection from flu, colds, diabetes and cancer. Get your vitamin D levels tested with your GP and supplement according to your results to achieve optimum vitamin D status. Being active and healthy as an older adult is largely dependent on what you ate, drank, did and did not do as a younger one. Whether you were reckless or prudent it is never too late to eat well and be well! It’s not just the skin that ages as we get older, we also age on the inside which can pose difficulties for our digestive system. Decreasing gastric juices (stomach acid and enzymes), certain medications and dental problems can impair the digestive process. The gastric juices are stimulated with the thought of food, choosing and preparing food and the aroma of food cooking is usually enough to get our juices flowing. With age, our sense of smell and taste may be affected lessening the secretion of our gastric juices, leaving us less prepared for the digestive process. Meat and poultry dishes are best cooked over a longer period to help breakdown the tough proteins prior to consumption. Stews, soups and casseroles are best for meat and poultry based meals while fish is best cooked by steam or in foil, baked in the oven, for shorter times. If using dried beans, allow for longer soaking times 24-48 hours and cook for longer to increase the digestibility of these valuable foods. Back in the day, many of our rich protein dishes were typically served with fruits and vegetables that also provided the enzymes needed for their digestion. Think back – gammon and pineapple, game with citrus fruits, pork and apple – these were not just culinary pairings but the fruits provided some acidity to help with the digestion of these meats. Chew food until it is liquid before swallowing, your stomach does not have teeth! Also, avoid large quantities of liquids before during or immediately after your main meal. You can also use supplements to aid digestion. Bitter herbs are used to stimulate the gall bladder, stomach, pancreas and other digestive organs to secrete the necessary enzymes and acids required for efficient digestion. Most bitter herb formulas include herbs such as dandelion, artichoke, milk thistle, sorrel, gentian, fennel, yarrow and peppermint. 40 West Kerry Live

The tie, played in near perfect conditions with just a slightly greasy surface to contend with, saw Cromane dominate the first half mainly through the strong play of Donnchadh Walsh in midfield. His precise delivery of ball to veteran full forward, Sean O’ Sullivan, was causing Beale huge problems but Cromane’s terrible finishing (nine wides in the first half) coupled with an outstanding performance from Beale goalkeeper, Dermot Cummins, who made superb saves from O’ Sullivan and Michail O’ Shaughnessey in a two minute spell mid ways through the half, meant that the home side had little to show for their dominance. In contrast Beale wasted few opportunities in the half with club minor star, Darragh Buckley, accounting for 1-3 of their total through some clinical finishing. The visitors held a three point advantage at the interval on the scoreline, 1-5 to 0-5. Early second half points from Paul O’ Sullivan (2), Darren Houlihan and Liam Walsh got Cromane back on level terms by the 43rd minute but within a minute ace forward, Buckley, struck for his and Beale’s second goal though the visitors were still only feeding off scraps. With the Walsh brothers, Donnchadh and Liam, holding sway in midfield and wing back O’ Shaughnessey driving forward at every opportunity Cromane, through points from Sean O’ Sullivan and Emmet Casey, narrowed the gap to the minimum with ten minutes remaining. But then in the 53rd minute came the most crucial score of the game when Beale wing back, Johnny O’ Sullivan, ran through the Cromane rearguard to send an unstoppable shot past Paudie McCarthy in the Cromane goal. Four minutes later impressive substitute, Tom Joy, struck for Beale’s fourth goal and though Liam Walsh eventually found the net for the home side three minutes into injury time it was just too little too late. Team: Cromane: Paudie McCarthy, Liam Teahan, Eoghan Walsh, Brendan Foley, David Moroney, Finbar Casey, Michail Shaughnessy, Liam Walsh (1-1), Donnchadh Walsh (0-1), Darren Houlihan (0-2), Emmet Casey (0-2)(1f), Sean Teahan, Martin Sweeney, Sean O’ Sullivan (0-2), Paul O’ Sullivan (0-3)(2f). Subs: Matt Colborne for Martin Sweeney (47m), Eamon O’ Connor for Sean Teahan (58m) and Cian O’ Keeffe for Paul O’ Sullivan (59m).

These should be provided or made available to parents of children attending the school. If you are unhappy about a school’s policy or the implementation of a school’s policy you can make a complaint to the school. The school should have a formal complaints procedure that you can follow. The complaints procedure usually involves contacting the principal with your complaint. (The school’s procedures may ask you to speak to another member of staff before speaking with the principal.) If having spoken with the school principal, you are still not happy that your complaint has been resolved you may contact the chairperson of the school’s management authority. If the chairperson cannot resolve your complaint they should discuss the matter at a meeting of the management authority. The school’s Board of Management is usually the management authority. The Ombudsman can examine any administrative actions of the school, staff or Board of Management including whether the school’s policies have been followed correctly or if those policies are fair.
