Ursula Gets Hospice Sunflower Hero Award

Ted Moynihan, Ursula O' Connell, Mary Kennedy and Mary Shanahan at Sunflower Days Launch and Sunflower Heroes 2016 Ursula O’Connell from Dingle received a “Sunflower Hero” award from RTE’s Mary Kennedy for her tireless work for Kerry Hospice. Ursula who is a member of the Dingle Branch of the Kerry Hospice was among 21 volunteers across the country honoured for their fundraising work for hospice care. The awards were presented in advance of national Hospice Sunflower Days which celebrates its 26th anniversary this year and takes place on Friday, June 10th and Saturday, June 11th. This is one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the hospice movement in Ireland and it is hoped that €1 million will be raised. The event is coordinated on behalf of the hospice movement by the Irish Hospice Foundation and all of the funds raised locally, stay locally. People are being encouraged to support their local hospice service on June 10th and 11th by purchasing various pieces of Sunflower merchandise - including sunflower pins for €2 each from collectors on the streets of cities, towns and villages across Ireland.

Seascapes

Kerry Hospice said it nominated Ursula for her fundraising efforts over more than a decade. “Ursula started volunteering with Kerry Hospice in 2005. She is a great worker and combines her hospice work with running a business and a family. She is always willing to help whenever she can,” a spokesperson for Kerry Hospice said.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 14th June the Dingle Film Club will screen Florence Foster Jenkins. The Florence in question who is played by Meryl Streep is a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. This biographical comedy-drama film is directed by Stephen Frears with Hugh Grant and Rebecca Ferguson in supporting roles in a funny, charming and moving true story . The following week on Tuesday 21st the feature will be the unsettling and unforgettable Son of Saul. In this searing drama, a concentration camp inmate tasked with burning the dead discovers the body of his young son, and must choose between participating in the clandestine uprising being planned among the prisoners, or securing a proper Jewish burial for his child. Grimly intense yet thoroughly rewarding, Son of Saul offers an unforgettable viewing experience, reaching new kinds of complex emotional height s-- and establishes director László Nemes as a talent to watch. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes. Richard Williams Its good news again this week and a huge COMHGAIRDEACHAS to the DINGLE BAY ROVERS soccer team on their brilliant success in winning the Kerry District League Premier A title last weekend . They among other teams from the club have performed very consistently over the soccer season and deserve their well merited successes in all age groups. The pressure is now really hotting up for both West Kerry and Dingle GAA teams to return with some silverware in the Senior, Under 21 , Minor and under age championships so best of luck to all and lets hope to see some really good traditional football this summer. I must also congratulate the property owners around town who have kept all the local painters busy over the past few weeks and how much better each street looks after a coat of fresh paint. Well, what a busy month May turned out to be here in Corca Dhuibhne and lets hope it is only the start of a bumper summer tourist season. Thank God for such a fine spell of weather which we so badly needed for farmers, fishermen and gardeners to name but a few and the ice cream outlets also!!!

the Green Street Car Park. The recent dry spell has taken a lot of our volunteers time with watering tubs etc so planting of the remaining beds has fallen behind but hopefully will be completed shortly. The timber fence in Strand Street also got a new coat of paint hopefully its last as rumour has it that plans to open up and develop the old Boatyard Site will be activated shortly. The Work Evenings will be concentrating on Cooleen, Dykegate Lane and Green Street over the next few weeks so local residents in those areas are requested to come out and get involved in our efforts to make our town an even nicer area to visit or live in all year round. Radio Na Gaeltachta recently had a piece on their An Saol ó Dheas slot about the shortage of Taxi Services in Dingle especially at night. It looks like a better coordinated system is needed to ensure the availability of a reliable taxi service as an expanding tourist destination like ours certainly should be catering for such necessary add ons that follow the strict drink driving laws now firmly applied this country. Who should get the ball rolling taxi owners, gardai, tourist promoters, business chamber or a combination of all interested parties???. Let me know if interested and we can a least knock heads together to find some workable solution even short term for the summer period. Slán Tamall.

The Annual Dar Dingle Adventure Weekend is upon us once again and it looks like around 600 enthusiasts will participate between the 3 different levels of competitions over Mountain, Sea and Road on Saturday next. A few minor traffic delays will occur on the roads so please allow a little extra time and patience if travelling between 9 a.m. and 3p.m. on Saturday. Noel O Leary and his crew have certainly worked very hard at establishing this event on the Adventure Sports Calendar and deserve our thanks for attracting such numbers to the Peninsula. Míle Buiochas. Tidy Towns Work Evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. The extended rockery at the entrance to the old Hospital in Ashmount has been completed as has the new rockery in 6 West Kerry Live

Salad of Dingle Farmhouse Cheese Mousse, Marinated Beetroot, Pickled Carrot, Orange Dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

There are so many tasty elements to this dish and it really makes such an ideal salad as a starter. It is worth sourcing Dingle farmhouse cheese. It has become one of my favourite soft cheeses because of its’ creaminess. Marinating the beetroot adds another layer of flavour to this salad. Try this recipe and you won’t be disappointed. Ingredients for the Dingle farmhouse cheese mousse 150g Dingle farmhouse cheese 100ml cream (whipped)

slices. Keep them in the liquid until needed.

To serve

For the pickled carrots

Place the sliced beetroot in the centre of a plate. Put some of the cheese mousse over the some of the beetroot. Take some of the carrots and roll them up then place randomly around the plate. Take the dressing and sprinkle it over the beetroot and the cheese.

Heat the water, vinegar and the sugar in a pot. Bring this to a boil and add the carrots. Cook for about 3 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow them to cool in the liquid (this will keep for about 2 weeks in a fridge). For the orange dressing

Enjoy!!

Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Place the orange halves on a tray, add the spices and place in the oven. Allow them to cook for about 30 minutes. Once the have cooked and carmelised squeeze the juice from them and use the spices from the tray too. Mix this and the remaining ingredients together and season it well with salt and pepper.

team succumbed to a superior Macroom team, while our Junior team faced the mighty Ballybunion. Again, the Junior Cup match was closely contested. Things were looking grim when Ballybunion went two up, with three matches still in play. Ceann Sibéal clawed one back: 2-1! The shout went up "2 all" and a glimmer of hope peeped through our despair. The last match reached the 18th green all square and headed into a sudden death playoff. It took a further three nail-biting holes to decide the match, with Ceann Sibéal taking the honours in style. Congratulations to team managers, players and caddies, you made us very proud! Thanks also to Liam Duggan, PGA pro, who has been helping us believe in ourselves! Winning these matches means that our teams have won the Kerry section of the Munster Championships, and move into the Munster quarter finals to be played in early July. There's no doubt that our future Club Championship players are to be found in our growing Junior Girls section. The club gives a huge welcome to our new fledgling golfers who we hope will enjoy our beginners' activities throughout the summer months and beyond. Meanwhile, our teams have had a fantastic bank holiday weekend of matches in the Munster Club Championships. First up were our Intermediate Cup team (h/cap 16 to 22) who played Ballybunion at The Ring of Kerry Club in Kenmare. The best of five singles matches was decided on the 18th hole of the last match, with Ceann Sibéal emerging as worthy winners. On Monday, both our Challenge Cup team (h/29 to 36) and our Junior Cup team (h/cap 8 to 15) travelled to Beaufort. Sadly our Challenge

Farming News

Fire lines, Fire Plans, fire suppression equipment should be reviewed and made ready and other relevant contingencies such as insurance, helicopter contracts etc., checked and confirmed.

Louis Murchan

BPS Preliminary Checks have begun. Preliminary checks on all online Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) applicants began last week and DAFM will notify online farmers of any non-compliance issues relating to overclaims, dual claims, and overlaps. Applicants will then have opportunity to rectify these by 20 June and there will be no penalty or reduction where such non-compliance is fully rectified by that date. The Department is continuing to encourage more farmers to apply for BPS online given the range of advantages that the online system offers. Preliminary checks are a key element of this approach and will help to improve the accuracy of BPS applications, and to reduce penalties for farmers particularly under the BPS and the Areas of Natural Constraints scheme. Over 100,000 or 75% of farmers applied online this year, with therequirement of 100% BPS online application in 2018. These preliminary checks will provide very real benefits for farmers applying online for this essential support and help to facilitate the processing of the maximum number of applicants for payment. Where a preliminary check identifies an overclaim, dual claim or overlap on a BPS application, a notification will issue online to the farmer or his advisor. If registered for text alerts, a text will be sent. The farmer or his advisor will then have the opportunity to rectify any non-compliance without penalty by the deadline of 20 June. Preliminary checks will identify any over-claims, overlaps or dual claims in respect of online BPS applications. Where a preliminary check identifies such an issue applicants are given the opportunity to amend their claim. Applicants may wish to retain their original claim, or to amend their claim in light of the preliminary check. For example, where a preliminary check highlights a dual claim the response can • Confirm that the applicant asserts the right to claim the dual claimed parcel, or • Withdraw the relevant parcel without penalty where the land may have been inadvertently claimed. The first run of preliminary checks will began last week, and others will follow, until complete and all responses must be made by midnight on 20 June. Only an on-line notification will be issued on the Agfood.ie/BPS online system, no paper based notification will issue. Farmers should thus check the correspondence section of their BPS online account. Where a farmer is signed up for text message alerts, a text will issue to advise them that they have a notification on their BPS account. Where preliminary checks have identified an overclaim, overlap or dual claim, this will be clearly signalled on the homescreen of the BPS online application system. • A farmer or advisor can click the “View Preliminary Checks” button to see the detail in each case. It is important to note that • A preliminary check can only be responded to once. • In each instance, the farmer / advisor will be given the opportunity to either amend his/her original claim to take account of the preliminary check or to maintain the original claim. There will be instances where it is valid to maintain the original claim – for example, in the instance of a possible overclaim identified, where an area of scrub has been removed and brought back into agricultural use with a resultant increase in eligible area. • Where a response to a preliminary check is sufficient to fully rectify the issue at hand, no penalty will apply. • Further administrative checks will still need to be carried out on all applications and thus further issues and reductions/penalties may arise later in the process in respect of any application. An action is only required of farmers / advisors where a preliminary check has identified a dual claim, overclaim or overlap on an application. Forest Fire Danger Rating Just because the very hot conditions of last week may be gone, they may come back, and the conditions are ripe for forest or gorse fires. Pending significant rainfall, this risk condition will remain in place until unless otherwise stated by the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. All forest owners and managers and commonage shareholders are again advised to prepare for likely outbreaks of fire.

12 West Kerry Live

The need for increased vigilance at this time cannot be overstated. Forest owners, farmers, rural dwellers and other countryside users are asked to be extremely vigilant regarding fire activity, to report any suspicious or illegal activity to the Gardai and to report all fires immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services via 112/999. Fire patrols are advised in known fire hotspots. Fire prevention and control measures should be observed: 1. RISK ASSESSMENT:-Assess your property with regard to fire risk and mitigation factors. Is there a risk of fire or presence of hazardous fuel vegetation on neighbouring lands? 2. PREPARE:-Fire Plans should be developed for all forests, including a map showing access routes and assembly points for fire fighting personnel and equipment and potential sources of water. 3. BE VIGILANT:-Forest owners should be particularly vigilant during the high risk period. Fire patrols may be warranted in known fire hotspots. Be particularly vigilant at Bank Holiday weekends where high risk weather is forecast. Cooperation between neighbouring landowners is critical to successful fire prevention. Forest owners should discuss their concerns about fire with neighbouring landowners in advance of the fire season. Providing assistance to farmers wishing to carry out legal prescribed burning earlier in the season is a useful way of developing good working relationships with neighbours, as well as ensuring that operations are conducted safely during lower risk conditions. Forest owners should cooperate with fire planning and share the burden of fire patrols and vigilance during high risk periods. 4. OBEY THE LAW:-It is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated between 1st March and 31st August in any year. Report all suspicious or illegal activity to Gardai immediately. 5. REPORT FIRES IMMEDIATELY:-If you see a fire, do not delay; report it to the Fire and Emergency Services straight away. Do not wait for somebody else to make the call. Dial 999 or 112. You will not be billed by the fire service or local authority for making the call. 6. REPORT LOSSES:-If your forest is damaged or destroyed, report this loss as soon as possible to your local Gardai station and to the Forest Service. New Measures to Encourage Wood Mobilisation Grants are now available under DAFM’s Forest Road Scheme, the aim of which is to encourage and assist in the mobilisation of timber. As well as ensuring that there is a continuous and ongoing programme of afforestation to supply Irish sawmills and timber processing industry, we must also maximise the volume of raw material that is harvested from our existing forests, not just roundwood for our processers but also the less traditional assortments for our growing renewable energy sector. There is a range of measures currently being progressed by DAFM under the Forestry Programme 2014-2020, including the development of a Forest Machine Operator training course and the proposed establishment of forest certification groups, both of which would contribute to the mobilisation of timber and meeting demand for certified timber; and Wood Price Quarterly initiative developed by Irish Timber Growers Association. Safe Tractor Driving Skills Farm safety is always never far from our mind, or should be. At this time of year, with school holidays, many young people are recruited to do tractor work, with slurry spreading and silage season in full swing. If you are going use these young people, they should be properly trainied, for both a safety and an insurance point of view. NEWKD are running a series of Safety driving courses, , one in Dingle Mart – Monday 4th July and another in Tralee Mart– Wed 29th June. They cost €35 which is much cheaper than a life with a reduced rate for those qualifying. Participants receive an FRS Training Certificate with recognition from the Farm Safety Partnership and Health & Safety Authority These courses will cover, safety checks, setting up a good driving position, safe driving on the farm, Hitching farm machinery to the tractor safely, operating trailed machinery from the tractor safely, checking the terrain, Practical driving skills, First Aid Training etc. To register for this course, phone John at NEWKD on 066 7120877. This is an essential bit of training for young people working with machinery, this and every year. Louis Murchan: 087-2857938

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Saturday, June 14. A misty start to the day but turned very warm in the afternoon. Spent several hours working in the garden and then took the kids cycling to Beenbawn where a few hardy people were taking their first dip of the year. Cycled over to Dún Síon and met Pádraig Quinn who feels that the Dún Síon naomhóg crew have a good chance of winning the trip to America next weekend.

By Ted Creedon Friday, June 6, 1986. John Greaney Jr. tells me that there will be a sponsored prize of a trip to the States for the winners of the World Currach Championships at the Brendan Festival on June 22nd. Also that the cost of running the festival this year will be around £14,000. When I started the event in 1984 the cost was £3,000. The American trip will really upset the Maharees regatta committee who are holding the All-Ireland Championships on the same day. This could leave a sour taste for years to come.

Saturday, June 7. The weather has been awful recently but today is a fine sunny break from all that rain. Took our eldest girl to the Convent Secondary School after lunch for an informal introduction between parents and teachers. Took some garbage to the dump and spent most of the afternoon painting one of the bedrooms. In the World Cup Northern Ireland lost 2-1 to Spain.

Sunday, June 8. An overcast day with strong southerly breeze and a slight mist but the Primary school sports went ahead at the Brothers school and we all went along. There were 72 events on the programme and all were run off in the space of just over two hours. There was a small crowd due to the poor weather but the kids really enjoyed it all. Máire Dorgan won the mother’s race and Eddie Leahy won the father’s race in which John O’Connor took a fall near the end. We came home with four medals.

Sunday, June 15. What a great day - skies cleared in the early afternoon and it became very hot. We had lunch on the lawn. It was a novel experience for some in the family and for the four-footed spectators. Drove to Kinard beach and had a splashing time - the water was very cold but very refreshing. We were all sunburned and sore by the time we got home. Had our tea on the lawn and it was even more enjoyable than at lunchtime. The breeze had gone and the air was still and warm. Later, there was an incredible World Cup match on TV between the much-fancied U.S.S.R. and Belgium who barely scraped a place in the last 16 but they won 4-3 after extra time.

Wednesday, June 18. The Referendum on Divorce campaign is heating up and will get saturation coverage over the coming week. The attention of the country is being diverted away from serious economic issues which need greater attention than most people realise. England have qualified for the last 8 in the World Cup by beating Paraguay 3-0 tonight. Some of the big favourites have failed to deliver and the only sure thing now is that there will be a trophy for the winners.

Thursday, June 19. Drove to Tralee for a meeting with county council officers regarding Kerry’s archaeological monuments. It was boring and lacking in any real proposals or development ideas - simply a talking shop and a waste of valuable time but something more positive may yet come.

Wednesday, June 11. The World Cup continues in Mexico with one match every night at 7pm and another on some nights at 11pm. The progress of the English team has been disastrous - they’re bottom of their group and had to beat Poland tonight to stay in the tournament - they haven’t even scored a goal yet! Anyway, they beat Poland 3-0 so they go forward. So far, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Argentina and the U.S.S.R look most likely to win out of the 24 teams taking part. The TV coverage was very poor at the beginning but has improved in recent games.

OPEN 7 Days 12 - Late for Lunch and Dinner

Thursday, June 12. There’s an article in today’s issue of The Kerryman about the Brendan Festival and the trip to the States for the winners of the main men’s race - what about the women? The festival will run from June 20 to 22 and, according to hotelier John Moriarty, Dan the Street Singer has been booked to perform on the final day. Apart from the currach races there will also be competitions for windsurfers, sailors and kayak enthusiasts. The festival will be officially opened by Bishop Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin on the Friday night. Saturday will feature a microlight display and a flyover of the town and the weekend will finish with a fireworks display at midnight.

Friday, June 13. Well known Lispole man Johnny Barrett died recently. He was very involved in the community at all levels and also at national level in the ICMSA. He was the driving force behind the development of the local GAA pitch, handball alley and the community hall. As the song about the project goes: ‘There is one name missing from this famous cast, They say that the best wine is kept until last, He produced and directed and played the lead role, The bould Johnny Barrett, Clooncurra, Lispole’. 14 West Kerry Live

Warm Welcome For Alan's Homecoming. After 28 days of walking and kayaking from his Manchester home to his native Dingle, Alan Creedon was warmly welcomed by his family, friends and supporters in the car park at the summit of the Conor Pass on Friday, June 3. He was accompanied by his sister Susan who had flown in from Geneva to walk with him on the final two-day leg from Tralee. His impending arrival was widely covered in the media which had been monitoring his journey, in memory of his sister Aoife, over the previous four weeks. "The most difficult part of the challenge was coping with huge blisters that never healed and kayaking across the Irish Sea during the dark hours of the 22-hour trip from Holyhead to Dublin," he told West and Mid Kerry Live this week. "The highlight was the welcome on the Conor Pass. The overall level of support from day one was overwhelming and I felt that the whole community was behind me," he added. Supporters on the Conor Pass wore caps and t-shirts emblazoned with the Walk for Aoife

logo and carried placards bearing messages such as 'Welcome Home Alan!' and 'Good man yourself Alan!'. The gathering then walked the last four miles to Dingle and included many of the staff and residents of the Dingle Camphill Community, one of the two beneficiaries of donations to the www.walforaoife.com website. The other beneficiary is the charity Manchester Mind. The walkers were glad to get out of the heat and enjoyed a reception in the Dingle Brewing Company's visitor centre. The centre provided free beer while Garvey's Supervalu provided trays of sandwiches, boxes of cakes and bottled water and Courtney's Bakery supplied cartons of cakes. A Walk for Aoife benefit concert, organised by Tríona Duignan, was held in the Conair Bar and Beer Garden on Sunday night and the programme featured Eoin Duignan, Steve Cooney, David Kitt and DJ Phil.

• • • • • • • • • •

Alan and his wife Beth attended the event and were delighted to meet friends from Manchester who had made a surprise visit to Dingle to congratulate Alan on his achievement. Between donations to the website and local contributions the total funding raised from the walk so far is just under €20,000.

Come for Dinner...

Níl ach mí fághta go dtí An Féile – tá na sceitimíní ag méadú. People are nervously asking ‘ how are yours doing’, but not giving away too much about their own. Referring to spuds , of course. Very much the topic of conversation Back West at the moment. Even though we have had very fine weather, and we are all glad of it, it hasn’t been that great for spuds. It might seem that we think the weather is never right. But just now, spuds have formed and should be increasing greatly in size. What is missing is water – rain – they consume large amounts when growing. Because we haven’t had rain in the period, the new spuds have remained small. Rain forecast for later this week will solve that problem and we all will have grand spuds by the time the parish/schools competitions take place, 1st - 3rd July.

For There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamthis initial we inchose wonderful ic" thisthe is a solar panelyear that works the dark.aYes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take- into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn Dowd 087-6720848 ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 tofacebook/dowdyman 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com

Dingle Bay Rovers Season Round-up Dingle Bay Rovers Seniors win the Premiership Dingle Bay Rovers were crowned Denny Premier A Champions after they defeated Killarney Celtic in a thrilling league final on Friday night. Sean Fitzgerald scored twice for Dingle with Donnacha Higgins and Shane Houlihan getting one each. A fantastic achievement by the seniors and all involved with the club can feel very proud of what they have done. U14s Dingle Bay Rovers win the Double Dingle Bay Rovers welcomed Ballyhar to West Kerry knowing that a point would be enough to give them the Foundation Sports 14 Division title. In the end they took all three points thanks to 2 goals from Cathal O’Beaglaoich. The U14s also won the Kerry Shield a few weeks earlier and were undefeated in their division. A meteoric rise for this team who are into the Premiership after only 2 seasons.

U13s Dingle Bay Rovers narrowly miss out on Division win Needing to beat Iveragh FC in their final game the U13s fell just short. A strongly contested game finished with Iveragh winning the game and the title. But the U13s can be very proud of their season and can hopefully build on it next season. U12s Dingle Bay Rovers Double gives them the title Dingle Bay Rovers went into the last weekend of the season with two games to play knowing one win would see them end the season as JK Sports 12 Division 3 champions. On Friday night the defeated Fenit 7-2 and the following day hit another 7 against Listowel Celtic C to take the Division in style. This brings to the end a very successful season for the U12s who also won the Kerry Shield a few weeks earlier. Dingle Bay Rovers Academy Arguably the biggest success of the season was the academy who had players from ages 8 to 11, giving many their first taste of soccer. With upwards of 60 kids at training throughout most the season it

Club Mini Section of the Year - Corca Dhuibhne RFC The 2015/16 season has been the most encouraging for years for Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne's Mini's. For a sparsely populated area, the West Kerry club managed to have 60 minis togged out every Saturday morning, almost doubling numbers of previous years. Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne had enough numbers and strength to attend the under 11s competition in Garryowen in March and the under 12s competition in Rockwell - this would have been unheard of two years ago. The rugby future is looking bright in west Kerry. Rob Williams one of the club mini’s coach receiving the award from Peter O'Mahony www.westkerrylive.ie

Celebrating Singing The Annascaul Way Singing was celebrated in grand fashion in Annascaul last weekend. The Annascaul Singing Club which celebrated its first year of songstering by staging a 'Celebrating Singing' event in venues around the community. But it wasn't just a free musical jamboree but also a demonstration of community co-operation, drawing together support from the local school, community hall, shopkeepers, pubowners and villagers, with all of this being highlighted by extensive coverage in local and national media. The weekend kicked off in Patcheen's Pub on Friday evening with a gathering of the musicians and singers who have supported the club from the beginning, namely Evelin Peenar, (co-organiser of the celebrations), Tony Owens, Bert McCann (organiser) and Noreen Ashe. Nora Rice from up the road in Camp who has just recorded her first CD, joined in to good effect. As did several local folk who delivered their favourite songs to the assembled crowd. Patcheen's has been the club's home for the last twelve months and it capped this long-term commitment with a cash donation toward the cost of the weekend. Moving up the road to Scoil Bhreac Chluain on Saturday morning the club hosted a voice class conducted by Laine Henderson, formerly the lead singer with 'Riverdance'. Quality teaching was a keynote of the weekend and Laine delivered in spades. This trend was followed in singer/songwriter Pat Johnson's tutorial on guitar in which he exhibited his expertise gained over many years of virtuoso playing especially with reggae outfit 'Avatar'. Sunday afternoon brought Niamh Varian-Barry to the school to deliver to twenty-plus participants the joys of singing in harmony. Niamh, a classical maestro on several instruments including voice also spent several years singing with the celebrated American folk band 'Solas' and the experience showed in her teaching. Around forty-five people from both home and abroad benefited from these sessions including Mr and Mrs Shanahan from Delaware who are honey-mooning in the area. All of this was made possible by the support of Mary Ward and her colleagues on the school's Board of Management, Principal Mary Murphy and her super-friendly staff including caretaker Martin Knightly. The village community centre opened its doors on Saturday evening to the Dingle Gospel Choir and the Dinglelele's, our neighbouring town's ukulele band. Thanks to Joan Sayers. Elizabeth Sharpe had decorated the 28 West Kerry Live

walls of the venue handsomely for the occasion with handmade quilts many of them the work of Catherine Pearse. Both of the acts were inspiring. The choir led by Linda Madeira let it rip with a playlist of spirituals and songs of liberation sung with passion and aplomb by the assembled songsters. These were augmented by some members of a delighted audience who accepted the leader's invitation to join the ensemble on-stage. In turn the choir eventually came off-stage and joined the audience in the last few anthems. The Dinglelele's, in the six months of their existence have learned how to play and how to entertain, as we found out again later when they gathered in Patcheen's and sang their hearts out. John Hanafin who organised and hosted a pub quiz in his bar in May which raised the funds needed to meet the cost of the necessary insurance policy for the weekend had lined up the Dingle Samba Band, the premier team of percussion following the Community Centre event. A pleasant evening was had by the performers and some audience members sitting in the sunshine eating barbeque supplied by Hanafin's next door neighbours Aoife and John DeRegibus at the Stone House b&b. John then generously went on to guide a walk around the area on Sunday morning. Sunday was childrens' day back at the Community Centre. Ruti Lachs, Killarney-based and a veteran of jazz and folk gatherings and of the Electric Picnic is just a dynamo. She kept around twenty five children from 0-6 along with their parents entertained royally for over an hour. And then had the energy to do it all again for a smaller group. This multi-instrumentalist has more ways to make children smile than the average childrens' entertainer. And the word locally is that the parents had a pretty good time too. The weekend was finished in Patcheen's with planned early gentle session starting at 7pm but when the sun went down on the village the song and music was still live and continued for a while after. It was notable in the organising of the event that community gatherings can attract support at all levels. Hanafin's Pub Quiz gathered donations of prizes in quantity from Tralee and all round Dingle and Castlemaine. Annascaul businesses were not lacking, with donations from Ashes and Jimmy O'Donnell's shops, the Old Anchor Inn restaurant and b&b and there were a few local cash contributions which helped to keep it all within budget. And not forgetting grant assistance promised from Kerry County Council's Arts Office. The response from the local and national media was also very heartening.

www.westkerrylive.ie

The result of this effort by a small focused group of people plus significant local goodwill and the assistance from KCC's Arts Office was 'Celebrating Singing', a happening which not only celebrated song but demonstrated what can be built in a tuned-in community. Speaking of which, The Annascaul Singing Club meets again on Thursday 16th June at 9pm at Patcheen's Bar on Main Street, Annascaul. As ever it's free and it's fun.

'Let the Hare Sit' is a new musical ensemble featuring Virginia McKee (clarinet/vocals), Michelle Flannery (ukelele/vocals) and Tricia Moriarty (guitar/vocals). The talented trio began by meeting in Kennedy's Bar for the simple joy of playing music together, and at this year's Feile na Bealtaine they had a terrific reception for their debut performance. 'Let the Hare Sit' is a northern saying calling for calm and reflection, and aptly describes their music - heartfelt and charmingly understated. Tricia and Virginia hail from within 5 miles of each other in Co. Antrim, lured to Kerry by the charms of Kerry men, and they have lived in the area for many years. Michelle is a Dingle woman with a northern connection as her mother is from Teelin, Co. Donegal. Each have a long history of involvement in the local music scene. Michelle was co-founder of the Backroom Sessions at McCarthy's Bar in 2011, an exciting initiative which showcased local and national singersongwriters. She is from a family of singers and has trained in both singing and piano. Tricia took over from Michelle in 2014 and launched the Dingle Folk Club which travels around Corca Dhuibne giving singers the opportunity to meet and share songs on a monthly basis. Tricia writes her own songs as well as performing great songs from her favourite influences, Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt, Diana Jones, to name but a few. Virginia is a classically trained clarinetist who has a unique genre-blurring style. She has performed and recorded with many artists in the area. Take some time out for yourself... 'Let the Hare Sit' present their carefully crafted songs and music, including original works, on Wednesday's, 9.30 -11pm in Nelliefred's, Spa Rd. Dingle. Guest appearances are welcome. Why Do Children Lie? Anne Healy Understandably telling the truth is a trait that is highly valued by parents. It is often seen as a vital foundation for their child’s development. When a child tells a lie it upsets parents. Parents have often said to me ‘my child has started to lie about all sorts of things and of all behaviours I really cannot stand lies’. Well the truth of the matter is lying is a common problem among many children. It is agreed by most of the experts that lying is a typical Cartún: Domhnall Ó Bric childhood behaviour and is usually a passing phase. However if your child persists in lying over a long period of time it is important try and establish if your child is frightened or covering up a behaviour that could be worrying for him or her. Helpful Hint It is important not to take it personally if your child lies. Children do not lie to hurt their parents. So, why do children lie? 1. Children lie to avoid parent disapproval: Often when children do something wrong they get scared. They know that they will upset their parents and that there will be a consequence. So they lie. They may tell you for example that they do not know how the new pencil in their school bag came to be there!

has broken a serious rule, say for example stolen something and deny they did it. Remember that the most important thing to do is keep an open connection with your child. Remind them you care about them and you know all the times they told you the truth even when it may have been difficult for them. And tell them you trust them to own up to what they did. Ask them why they took the money. Remind them that there will be a consequence, say for example they may have to do some work in the house to repay the money they stole. Once they have owned up and a consequence is decided tell them you will now move on from the situation, as you trust he or she has learned from their mistake. And finally you are the most important person to support your child to develop the courage to be honest when they find it hard to speak the truth. Perhaps tell your children about a time when it was difficult for you to tell the truth, but you decided it was more important to own up to what you did as you knew it would work out best for you in the end. Try though not to make this a lecture as some parents tell me when they give ‘the lecture’ their child tunes out which can be infuriating for you! We may remember times as a child we may have been called a liar. These were shaming and fear invoking moments. Try to never call your child a liar; labels such as will reduce a child’s self –esteem. And remember many adults lie ….. to ‘twist the truth to suit ourselves’! Anne Healy is a play therapist and parent adviser with over thirty years experience of working with children and families. 087 2486421 info@mindfulparentingadvice.ie www.mindfulparentingadvice.ie

2. Children lie because it is suits them: A lot of children would prefer to play with their toys than wash their hands before a meal. They may tell you they have already done it. Or they may tell you that they have all their homework done to avoid doing something they do not like! 4. Some children lie because it makes them feel better about themselves: Some children like to make their lives more exciting than they are. It is part of their natural development. 5. Children with low self-esteem may embellish the truth, brag or exaggerate in a bid to impress others or in an attempt to fit in with peers. Similarly, children who are feeling insecure may invent scenarios to try to get adults’ attention and interest. 6. Children may lie because they are scared that they may get someone in trouble. Of perhaps they may have been warned not to tell what is going on by a bully or if somebody was hurting them. Of all the points I raise this of course is the most worrying form of lying. If you sense your child’s behaviour has changed or they may seem withdrawn try to help them share with you what is going on for them. If this does not work talk to someone you can trust or seek professional help, How to encourage your child to be honest 1. If you know that your child is lying it is better not to demand a confession. I have done this and believe me it does not work and it is counter-productive. What usually happens is that your child will protect himself as do most people when put on the spot. Try saying ”You know what, that really does not sound like the truth to me. I do understand that sometimes we do not tell the truth when we are feeling scared, or afraid we may get in trouble. So right now we are going to take some time off. Later I trust that you can come and share with me what is going on. Let’s say we chat about this after dinner. And remember I love you and whatever you did we can work it out’. 2. Give your child a chance to avoid telling a lie. For example if you know that they have not their school bag tidied away for the morning and he or she tells you they have it done you could you say “Please show me your bag when it’s packed.” 3. You might overhear your pre-schooler telling his friend that he is getting a new puppy and as you know this to be not true you could say later to your child ‘I know you would love a puppy so much you told your friend we were getting one’ 4. Of course at times there may have to be consequences if a child 30 West Kerry Live

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Life Ann-Marie Henderson: Education Officer, Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium This year World Oceans Day fell on the 8th June. It is a day people worldwide celebrate the amazing oceanic species and how much our ocean help us. The ocean connects us all, regulates our climate, produces oxygen, supports an incredible array of wildlife and feeds millions of people every year, and so much more! It is also a source of great enjoyment and relaxation for us during the summer months. So we should do our best to keep our oceans healthy and safe for future generations to enjoy. According to the UN, this year, the theme is “Healthy oceans, healthy planet”, so we should make a special effort to stop plastic pollution. You can easily reduce your carbon footprint this week through small activities which help towards the bigger picture. With the beautiful weather we have currently, walk or cycle to work, organise car pools to school, turn off your TV and go out and exercise or play. These are simply activities that can benefit your mental and physical health as well as the environment. Exercise is a great means of de-stressing from work. The next day you will perform much better with a clear head. On beach or boat trips, don’t forget your rubbish. Leaving no trace is a great way to ensure someone else can enjoy the beach after you have gone. Yes that means picking up and properly discarding rubbish and dog waste. Plastic pollution is a serious threat because it degrades very slowly, polluting waterways for a very long time. In addition, plastic pollution impacts the health of aquatic animals because animals including zooplankton mistake the microbeads for food. Microbeads are tiny plastics that have been broken down and enter the food chain. Scientists also fear health impacts for humans. So buy less plastics and watch what you flush as the majority of it ends up in the ocean!

Dingle Record and Vinyl Social The next meeting of the Dingle Record and Vinyl Social will take place in Dick Mack’s Yard on Saturday 11th June from 2pm. Bring your own vinyl records along and get them played. Chat and share stories of all things musical.

There are many activities around west Kerry to help you celebrate our Oceanic species. Many boat trips to enjoy our beautiful natural coastlines and wildlife. Some can be even seen on land if you time it right. A great way to view and learn about these species up close is at Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium. Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium have organised a day to celebrate World Oceans Day on the 12th of June with activities designed for a great day out for all the family. Let’s show our appreciation for these fascinating animals we share our planet with and continue to keep our Oceans healthy! 34 West Kerry Live

Dingle Ice Cream Forecasts a Sunny Summer Murphy’s Ice Cream has announced the opening of two new locations, one in Palma de Mallorca and one at the Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare. The Palma shop is in the Spanish city’s old fishing quarter of Santa Catalina, and the Cliffs of Moher shop will open soon in the visitor centre and will be run in cooperation with Clare Co. Council. “We have always believed that Irish milk and cream is the best in the world,” said Séan Murphy, “and for us it follows that Irish ice cream should also become known as the best. We’re delighted to begin exporting ice cream made in Dingle and to begin the work of building an Irish brand abroad.” Established in 2000, Murphy’s Ice Cream has built an international reputation for quirky and delicious ice creams that include Dingle sea salt, caramelised brown bread, and dairy-free sorbets made with Irish rainwater. They use local milk from indigenous, rare breed Kerry cows, lots of fresh cream, Lispole free range eggs, and they steer clear of the usual milk powders, food colouring and artificial flavours. Their original shop is on Strand Street in Dingle, and they also have established shops in Killarney and Dublin. The growth, combined with the opening last year of a second shop in Dingle, has resulted in the creation of 9 additional jobs, taking the company’s total employment in Ireland to 35. Murphy’s is working with Údaras na Gaeltachta to expand their factory in Dingle and hope to create more employment with further expansion next year.

Computer Matters

name and password, you’ll be asked for a verification code that will be texted to your phone. Pop in that single-use code, and you’re in. Ta-da! Multi-factor authentication!

Passwords Joan Maguire Last month World Password Day was held to highlight the need for people to use secure passwords for their Internet activities. This was spotlighted recently by the revelation that Mark Zuckerberg's Twitter account had been hacked, he, along with a list of celebritites endured their accounts being used to distribute abusive tweets. It demonstrates that no one is immune to the impact of hackers. Passwords are a burning issue and increasingly so, but instead of the usual lecture on how the Internet has linked together people from different economies and how it can be worthwhile for someone to work for hours and days, just to secure some piece of information that they can sell, which will keep their family from starving. Here are four points that will provide you with greater protection from the passwordday.org website:

Why should I use multi-factor? Last year, 450 million passwords were leaked from major Internet companies. Adding an extra layer to your passwords significantly decreases the risk of someone accessing your account. Think of it like a second lock on your door, or a moat surrounding a castle. What sites and services offer multi-factor? You can activate multi-factor in the settings for most major websites. Our friends at twofactorauth.org have put together a comprehensive list of websites and services that offer MFA here. Joan Maguire runs Compucara in Dykegate Lane, Dingle. 066-9152222

1. Use strong passwords The key to a strong password is length. Your passwords should be 8 characters long at the very least, and difficult for someone to guess. Avoid using personal information, especially if someone can find the answer on social media, or by searching your name online. In addition to length, secure passwords also use a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. This may seem daunting but there is a simple solution. Try using a passphrase instead of a password. A pass phrase is a short saying that you modify to become a strong pa ssword. For example, “Thund3r Sh0wers at Suns3t” would be a very strong password that’s also easy to remember. 2. Use different passwords for your accounts Imagine if one key opened your front door, your car, your bank, and your safe. If someone got hold of your one key — poof — they have access to everything. That’s more or less your situation when you recycle passwords. If it’s someone has access to your one, key password, they have access to everything. Cyber criminals know people reuse passwords, and after a major password leak, they’ll try using those passwords and email addresses to get into all kinds of sites. Often, it works. Don’t get caught in this trap. The solution is simple: have different passwords for every online account. That way if one account is compromised you can rest easy knowing your other accounts are still safe. If you think it would be difficult to remember all those passwords, move on to the next section for an easy solution. 3. Use a password manager A good password manager safely stores all your passwords, remembers them and can generate strong passwords for you. This makes it incredibly easy to use different, hard-to-remember passwords for every account, so you only have to remember the one master password to get in. All the security – less hassle! But what if someone gets your master password? Luckily, quality password managers have prepared for this by ensuring they only work on your registered devices. That way, if someone tries to log in from an unregistered device, the password manager will block access until the user completes a second, or third login step, like entering a secret code that is emailed or texted to you. If you get an email saying someone is trying to login from an unknown device, you’ll know you should change your master password as soon as possible. In addition to emailed and texted codes, some password managers also let you add fingerprint, and face recognition options and devices you trust — this is called multi-factor authentication, and it offers convenient, powerful protection for your password vault. 4. Multi-factor identification? If you’ve ever used a fingerprint reader on your phone, you’ve used multi-factor! For example, when you download an app from an app store, it first checks you’re on a trusted device (Factor 1) and then verifies you’re you with your fingerprint (Factor 2).

by 1809, although some were brought back into operation during the American war of 1812-14, and many are marked as being ‘in ruins’ by the time of the publication of the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6” maps in the late 1830s/early 1840s. Many of these buildings are on private property, and indeed may not be in very safe condition, so should not be visited without permission from the landowner, and care should always be taken when near ruined structures.

Túir Chomharthaíochta

Signal Towers Isabel Bennett

Much of the information for this note came from Castles and Fortifications in Ireland 14851945 by Paul M. Kerrigan, published by The Collins Press, Cork, 1995.

Tógadh roinnt Túir Chomharthaíochta anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne agus ar fud na tíre idir 1804 agus 1806, nuair a tuigeadh don Ríocht Aontaithe go bhféadfadh Napoleon na Fraince a bhealach a dhéanamh chuici tré Éirinn, agus ionsaí á dhéanamh uirthi sa tslí sin. Tá rian de cheann de na túir le feiscint fós ar Cheann Sibéal agus tá fothrach eile i mBaile Dháith (ach an dá cheann sin lonnaithe ar thalamh príobháideac). Bhí ceann ar an mBlascaod Mór leis agus ceann eile in Airghleann laistíos de Chnoc Bhréanainn. Ní rabhadar in úsáid ach ar feadh tréimhse an-ghairid, chomh fada le 1809 ceaptar, agus bhí roinnt mhaith acu ina bhfothracha faoi 1840. Signal stations (Signal Defensible Guard Houses to give them their correct title) were established around the coast of Ireland between 1804 and 1806 in response to a threat of invasion of Great Britain by the French, under Napoleon, via Ireland (which was then part of the United Kingdom). Their function was to signal information of the movement of shipping to the naval and military authorities. Several were planned for and built on the Dingle Peninsula, with remains still extant at Sybil Point (Ceann Sibéal – just to the north-east of where the Star Wars set was built!) and at Ballydavid Head (Túr Baile Dháith) (although this latter station may never have been used). There was also a tower on the Great Blasket 38 West Kerry Live

Island, although little of it survives. Towers were also built slightly later at Kilshannig Point and about a mile south of Brandon Head (Pointe an Choma Dhóite), but little remains of these today. These stations are contemporary with the perhaps better-known Martello towers which can also be seen around our coasts, but none of which were built in Kerry.

To find out more about archaeological sites on the Dingle Peninsula, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, www. westkerrymuseum.com. The museum is open 10.00 am – 5.00 pm, 7 days a week. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum. com. There is a café with fresh baking daily, a bookshop, and Wi-Fi! Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caifé agus WiFi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá, 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat.

We know that the Great Blasket and Sybil Head towers were built by a contractor, and cost £720-1-4 each, a considerable sum for the time but their remote locations would have added to the cost of construction. So, what did they consist of and how did they operate? The stations were generally a two-storey rectangular or square tower, which was the guard house, with sometimes small barracks blocks added, often within a stone-walled enclosure. Signals were sent from tower to tower using a ‘ball and flag’ system from a large signal mast set next to the tower. A flag and up to 4 balls were raised in various combinations to convey signals. The towers would have been manned by 4 people consisting of a naval lieutenant, and one midshipman with two signalmen who made up the signal crew. There may also have been a military guard (of up to 7 men) to protect the signal crew. It seems that the period of use of these towers was short, with many being abandoned

This coming Sunday it is our OPEN DAY, we are working hard to get the place ready and hope that many of you can come. The highlight of the day will be the opening of the new house at 2 o’clock. Michael Carroll who has put so much work and effort into this house, and who has been such a help for our community, will be opening the house. As the house is still not registered you will have a chance to look around the house and see this beautiful place which you all have helped to build. Hopefully soon after open day HIQA comes back and we can have the first residents moving in. At the end of May we had a wonderful evening in the Skellig hotel, organised by the local rotary club. This open day they will give us the cheque…..Thank you so much for all the effort that went into organising this event and the bag packing, the Friday before. Last Friday Alan Creedon arrived in Dingle. After 4 weeks of walking and 22 hours of kayaking over the Irish Sea! We met him on the Conor pass and walked down the mountain with him. He really has raised a lot of money for his 2 chosen charities: Mind in Manchester and our community in Dingle. Well done Alan and thank you very much for all the money you raised so far… the sums are going up still every day, so I cannot give a final amount just yet.

Welcoming Alan Creedon on top of the Conor Pass

We are now gearing ourselves up to finding volunteers who are willing to help on the 2nd of July on the big Ring of Kerry Cycle. We are asked to come with 20 helpers and in return will be nominated as one of the minor charities. We hope that our task will be to help with the traffic…but will find out where, when and what on the next meeting. This event will give us a taste of what it means to be a chosen charity. When we can find enough local support we would love to apply to become a major charity… At the moment all funds raised go towards the new house and the landscaping around it. We had to take out a loan to pay the builders which we hope to pay off as soon as possible.

Epsom Salt(Magnesium Sulphate) Baths Eddie O’ Grady I am always dubious about the miraculous claims of some food supplements etc. A quick search of ‘’Google Scholar’’, Google’s more scientific sub-site usually shows not even one proven scientific study for most of these ‘’amazing’’ substances . I have been guilty myself of recommending epsom salt baths to client’s. This has been mostly due to a lot of positive feed-back from these clients, athletes etc. about the compound. Today for the first time, I decided to review scientific studies on the benefits of Epsom salts. I must make it clear here that I searched for proper scientifically carried out studies on the benefits epsom salt baths, with published results in proper scientific Journals. A search of the main ‘’Google’’ site itself will yield loads of articles on the benefits of epsom salts with no scientific studies quoted to back them up. Unfortunately for consumers this is the case for many supplements. Epsom salt is made up of an inorganic salt, magnesium sulfate. A search of scientific literature websites, such as PubMed etc., yields no real research supporting most of the claims of benefits from Epsom salt baths. The lack of research could of course possibly be that researchers aren’t interested, or that they simply can’t get funding. The only study that showed any relevance was one conducted at the University of Birmingham, U.K. The study involved 19 subjects, staff of the School of Biosciences at the university. All took an Epsom salt bath for 12 minutes at a water temperature of between 50 to 55 degrees Celsius (122 to 133 degrees Fahrenheit) over seven consecutive days. Blood samples were taken before the first bath, at the second hour after the first bath, and at the second hour after the seventh bath. Urine samples were collected before and at the second hour of every bath. At the end of the study, all but two of the subjects had higher magnesium concentrations in their blood. Those who didn’t have higher blood magnesium concentrations had higher magnesium levels in their urine. Sulfate levels were high both in blood and urine of all subjects. Researchers concluded that “magnesium ions had crossed the skin barrier and had been excreted via the kidneys” and that an Epsom salt bath “is a safe and easy way to increase sulfate and magnesium levels in the body.” There was no control group, however, and the assumption was made that magnesium sulphate was absorbed through the skin, with no proposed mechanism of absorption. It is interesting to note that in the study, two volunteers, both who were > 60 years old, commented without prompting that ‘rheumatic’ pains had disappeared after the baths. Is this just placebo effect ?? Again, there is a problem here where you have no control study i.e. hot baths with only water in them, at same temperatures to above, used by a similar amount of people in the study. 42 West Kerry Live

Maybe some would have also got relief from rheumatic pains unprompted. Also there needs to be control over any random leakage of information from investigators and those being tested, especially in a case like this where all were staff at the university. This could easily occur unintentionally. Poor understanding of terms like “detoxification” and “osmosis” are sometimes used to explain the absorption and benefits of Epsom salt. These explanations are based more on myths and beliefs, rather than hard scientific facts and evidence. Proponents of Epsom salt usage sometimes presume that either osmosis is the means by which the salts can get into the body and then have a detoxifying effect, or osmosis is actually the detoxification process itself. However, osmosis is about the movement of water, not the ions or compounds, across a thin membrane, moving from an area of low concentration in a solvent to a higher concentration within another or similar solvent. Therefore, if the salts do get absorbed into the body, it is not done by osmosis. Detoxification and osmosis do not provide an explanation for Epsom salt “benefits.” Muscle pain and soreness is not fully understood, and there are many factors contribute to pain, such as nerve pathways, disease, stress, and the perception of pain. With no credible evidence supporting the claimed benefits of Epsom salt, it is very difficult to advocate or justify using it for muscle soreness or “cleansing” the body. Magnesium, however, is a cofactor involved in but not limited to, protein synthesis, cellular energy production and storage, reproduction, DNA and RNA synthesis, and in the stabilizing mitochondrial membranes. It also plays a critical role in nerve transmission, cardiac excitability, neuromuscular conduction, muscular contraction, vasomotor tone, blood pressure, and glucose and insulin metabolism(Magnesium in Disease Prevention and Overall Health; advances.nutrition. org.). If magnesium is able to absorb through the skin somehow during epsom salt baths, it may be of benefit to anybody lacking in this nutrient. Because of the lack of studies, the benefits of epsom salt baths remain more unproven than disproven. I am not as such trying to discourage the use of epsom salts baths in this article. It is written more to demonstrate how we can get sucked into hyped up unproven products, sold by supplement companies. The article is meant to be food for thought, more than anything else.

The Fork is Mightier than the Pen for Exam Success! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Students! It is likely that your heads are now buried in mathematical theorems and verses from the dead poet’s society that even a glance at this edition of West and Mid Kerry Live might send you into overdrive! Cutting to the chase, this article is not about what you should have been eating all year but is your guide to your immediate nutritional needs for intense revision, recall and exam performance. The convenience of readymade meals, sugary snacks and stimulant drinks may seem like an attractive option when time is limited, but as a fuel source for your increased physical and mental demands, they are a poor choice when it comes to nourishing your noggin! Stress too, can have opposing effects on appetite and often influences much of our food choices. Some students will crave more refined carbohydrates and sweets as the body demands more and more glucose for fuel. For others, digestion is compromised during stressful periods and appetite can be dramatically reduced. Either way, your ability to study, mental clarity and focus can be adversely affected by too much sugar and caffeine as well as long periods without food.

Keep hydrated - the first sign of dehydration is tiredness. Fill a 2L bottle of water and sip throughout the day. Avoid fizzy drinks and caffeine as they can leave you jittery and affect your sleep, ultimately leaving you lethargic and distracted. Finally, don’t panic! A little stress is beneficial for quick thinking and problem solving - too much stress will have the opposite effect. Tension and anxiety are greatly inflated with a lack of nourishing food and little shut-eye! Information is processed, filed and sorted for easier retrieval during sleep so do not neglect your ZZZs. Allow time for fresh air and cardio-type exercise during study breaks to increase oxygen levels in the body- essential for alertness and stamina. While most of this is common sense, a stack of books and a ticking clock can often leave little room for the obvious. Best of luck to all students, go n-eirí libh go léir! An ideal plan of action is to wake earlier than normal and enjoy an abundant breakfast followed by well-timed balanced meals. Skipping breakfast is disastrous for concentration and memory recall. For breakfast choose wholegrain cereals such as porridge or Weetabix, low in sugar to keep a steady flow of energy throughout the morning. Add fresh blueberries and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed or almonds for extra brain-boosting properties. Sugary, processed cereals can diminish your capacity to focus and may lower your energy levels leaving you tired, unmotivated and forgetful quite soon after eating. Other breakfast ideas include scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast, unsweetened granola with fresh fruit and natural yogurt or a fresh fruit smoothie made with almond milk enriched with protein by adding seeds, nuts or a scoop of protein powder to the mix.

Eat a little protein at all meals and snacks to keep blood sugar levels even. Fish, meat, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts and seeds are excellent protein sources. Vary protein foods to get the most of B vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium - all necessary for brain power. Healthy omega-3 fats such as salmon, mackerel, flaxseed, walnuts which enhance learning ability, improve problem-solving skills, boost memory power and enhance communication between brain cells. Keep meals colourful with fresh fruit and vegetables which are guaranteed to improve brain power and immunity through their antioxidant content. You may not be aware of it, but the brain is stimulated by the colour and texture of food. A stimulated brain fires on all cylinders so, forget about the bland beige colour of fast food and opt for some edible rainbows instead. Particularly great right now are avocados, blueberries, melons, tomatoes, pineapples, oranges, cherries and kiwis - these increase blood flow to the brain and help information recall as well as protecting you from getting run down. Veggies to munch on include all greens, stalks and leaves as well as red, orange and yellow vegetables lightly steamed or raw. Nuts and seeds are a great power snack - rich in vitamin E, B6, folate and omega 3 and 6, these little guys can give your brain the kick in the backside that’s needed as well as improving mood. Wholegrain pasta, brown rice and quinoa are a good choice for evening meals as they are easily digested and give a good energy boost to the brain while, at the same time, can be soothing and calming which help to sustain mental clarity when studying in the evening.

Aisteoirí Bhréanainn agus Comóradh 1916 Mar chuid de Chomóradh 1916, tá Aisteoirí Bhréanainn ag cur Drámaí na Cinn Airde ar stáitse i Scoil na mBráthar (An LAB) ar an Luan agus ar an Máirt, 20 agus 21 Meitheamh, ar 8.00 in. Trí ghearrdhráma iad seo idir 15-20 nóiméad an ceann. An Cúlra In Aibreán na bliana 1913, tháinig Earnán de Blaghd go Ciarraí Thiar ag lorg oibre chun deis a fháil feabhas a chur ar a chuid Gaelainne. Fuair sé obair ó Ghriaire Ághas i gCinn Aird i Lios Póil. Ba é an Griaire seo athair Thomáis Ághas a fuair bás ar stailc ocrais i 1917. Bhí Earnán i gCinn Aird go dtí Meán Fómhair 1914 --- bliain go leith (formhór an ama). Chomh maith lena obair fheirme, bhí Earnán mar chaptaen ar na hÓglaigh i bParóiste Lios Póil. Saolaíodh Earnán de Blaghd i gCo. Aontroma sa bhliain 1889. Mac feirmeora. Tháinig sé go Baile Átha Cliath ag obair. Toisc go raibh suim sa Ghaelainn aige óna mháthair, bhí sé mar bhall d’eagrais Ghaelainne sa chathair. Bhí sé, chomh maith, mar bhall den IRB agus d’Óglaigh na hÉireann. Bhí sé sa phríosún nuair a thosaigh Éirí Amach 1916. Níos déanaí, bhí sé mar Aire Airgeadais sa chéad Rialtas agus mar Bhainisteoir / Stiúrthóir ar Amharclann na Mainistreach ó 1941–1972. Nuair a chuala muintir na Cinn Airde go raibh taithí ar dhrámaíocht ag Earnán, d’iarradar air dráma a léiriú leo. Thosaíodar ag ullmhú na ndrámaí seo: An Pota Súip le W. B. Yeats; Caitlín Ní hUallacháin le W. B. Yeats; Liúdaidhe Óg na Leargadh Móire le Séamus Mac Mághnais. Shocraíodar na drámaí a chur ar stáitse i Scoil na mBráthar i nDaingean Uí Chúis in Earrach na bliana 1914. Rachadh airgead an dorais go dtí Scoil na mBráthar. Bhíodh na cleachtaí drámaíochta acu i dTigh Uí Ghrífín agus, an fhad a bhítí ag fanacht leis na haisteoirí go léir chun teacht, bhíodh roinnt port acu ar an mileoidean ó Thomás Ághas eile (mac Mhaitiú) a maraíodh i luíochán Lios Póil 1921. Ag tabhairt na n-imeachtaí sin chun cuimhne agus mar chomóradh ar spioraid, idéalachas, dóchas is litríocht na haimsire sin, tá Aisteoirí Bhréanainn, faoi stiúir an Ath. Tomás Ó hÍceadha (a bhfuil gaol gairid aige leis an dá Ághasach thuas) agus Marina Ní Dhubháin, ag cur Drámaí na Cinn Airde ar stáitse arís, i 2016, i Scoil na mBráthar sa Daingean (An LAB) ar an Luan agus ar an Máirt, an 20 agus 21 de Mheitheamh ar 8.00. Chun ticéad a chur in áirithint glaoigh ar: 087-6496125 Beidh na drámaí ar siúl, chomh maith, ag Oscailt Fhéile Lios Póil, ar an Aoine, 29 Iúil.

Gach aon bhliain, bíonn ranganna Gaolainne againn, turasanna againn, ‘is aoicheoltóirí ón ceantar. Tá sár-mhúinteoirí againn gach aon bliain: Caitríona Ní Chathail, Máire Ní Scannláin, Maighréad Uí Chíobháin, Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh, Eoin Ó Beaglaoich, Bernie Ní Mhuircheartaigh, agus múinteoirí eile. Cé go bhfuil Máire Uí Shíthígh ar scor anois, cuireann sí fáilte romhainn gach aon bhliain. I mbliana, shiúlamair suas Sliabh an Fhiolair chun suíomh na talún a fheiscint. Thugamair cuairt ar an mBlascaod Mór agus thug Tomás Ó Lúing an-éachtaint dúinn ar shaol mhuintir an oileáin. Thugamair turas ar láithreacha seandalaíochta le Isabel Bennett chun blaiseadh de stair na háite a fháil. Faighmid blaiseadh de cheol, rince, agus amhránaíocht ar an sean nós sa rang, ag an Tinteán Ceoil ar an gClochán, agus sna tithe tabhairne i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh agus sa Daingean. Tá Béal Bán, Tráigh an Fhíona, agus Ceann Trá siúlta againn. Bhaineamair taitneamh as an mbia áitiúil chomh maith—prátaí, iasc, uan, arán donn, níos mó prátaí, muiríní, diúilicín, agus níos mó prátaí blásta! Is cairde anois sinn le muintir na háite agus le foireann Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne. Go raibh míle maith agaibh as an deis teacht anseo agus trí seachtaine a chaitheamh libh! Bainimid súp as gach aon bhliain! —Kathleen Ort, Richard Newman, and Irene Mellon Luach €1,000 duaiseanna bronnta ar scoláirí Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne as Scéim Blagála is Léitheoireachta 2016 Bronnadh duaiseanna ar scoláirí Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne le déanaí mar chuid den Scéim Blagála a riarann Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne sa scoil i gcomhar le múinteoirí Gaeilge na scoile. Nár chuir an aimsir bhreá árdú croí ar chách. Dá leanfadh an dea-aimsir is beag a bheadh ag tabhairt na tíortha teó ortha féin.Tréis na báistí agus an teasa, beagnách go gcífeá an féar ag fás. Theastaigh an féar go dóite ón bhfeirmeoir agus an aimsir bhreá ón saol mór. Tá birt nó ‘béileanna’ saidhlais á bhfáscadh na laetheannta seo. Sin iad an dream go mbíonn dhá bharra saidhlis acu.Theastódh barra maith saidhlis ach n’fheadar an mbeidh aon chúnamh stáit ar fáil do tháirgeóirí bainne. Is ar éigin go bhfuil aon phingin le déanamh as an mbainne fé láthair rud a chuireann brú uafásach ar tháirgeoirí bainne. Chonaicís mar a raibh ar fheirmeoir mór i gCorcaigh a raibh air a raibh do ainmhithe ar an bhfeirm a dhíol, míle bó, le bhillí a dhíol. Tá súil againn ná luífidh an bhróg ró-mhór ar an muintir seo againne. Reifreann N’fheadar cén tionchar a bheidh ag reifrean na Breataine. Má deintearcineadh fanacht san AE leanfaidh praghas beithíg agus caoire mar atá, ach má thárlaíonn go mbeidh an Bhreatain ag tarrac as an AE beidh titim mór ar phraghas stoic agus caorach ar feadh tamaill. Bhí margadh €81M againn leis an Rúis, ach nuair a thosnaigh poiliteóirí ag cáineadh agus ag píopaireacht fén Rúis de bharr achrann na hÚcráine. Bá cheart dos na gioláin sin a mbéal a éisteacht. Caithfear a thuiscint gur iad tíortha mileata an iarthair fé ndear an tUachtarán san Úcráin a bhí tofa go daonlathah, á dhíbirt an bóthar ó Thuaigh. Is baoladh ná fuil forlámhas Domhanda ag Sasana le blianta fada- b’iad siúd na máistrí. Dar leo gur dána an mhaise treóracha a bheith ag teacht ón mBruiséal. Téann san go smúsach i gcuid mhaith acu. Cad a mheasaid ! Ní éireóidh leis an mbeartas dar liom. I ndeire an lae is cuma dhúinn iastigh nó amuigh an Bhreatain mar tá siad ag braith orainn agus sinne ortha san, cuid mhaith i saol na trádala. Trump Rud eile ná Donald Trump. Tá sé roghnaithe ag Poblachtánaigh le seasamh thar a gceann i dtoghchán na hUachtarántachta, Samhain seo chugainn. Ná fuil máistíní anso ar a gcosa deiridh ag cáineadh Trump. Ní aon phioc dár gcúram cad deir sé ná a dheineann sé. Má thagann sé ba choir dúinn a bheith béasach agus an áird a thabhairt air agus a tabharfaí ar aon iorrathóir mar é, a bhead ag seasamh i dtoghchán na hUachtarántachta. Is gnáthaí ná bíonn aon cheal tuisciona ortha siúd a bhíonn ina mbillíunaithe. Tá go leor baoth theallaireachta againn fé thíortha eile, conas ná deinimíd aire níos caillmhaire a thabhairt dár bpobail féin. Má tá tacaíocht ag Trump ó Mhuintir Mheiriceá chucha siúd atá. Ní amadáin agus óinsigh iad. Réitídís a bhfadhbanna féin. ‘Star Wars’ Tá lucht ‘Star Wars’ tagtha agus imithe. Bhí na céadta ag teacht gach lá le radharc a fháil ar an ‘obair’ ar barr Chinn Sheibéil. Bhíodh bóthar an Bhail’ Uachtaraigh plódaithe ag lucht gliúcaíola. Stopadh iad ach bhaineadar sásamh as a bhfeaca siad suas uatha. Bhí scannánaíocht ar an bhFearann chomh maith. Cé nach fada a bhíodar timpeall dhein lucht lóistin, bialanna agus tábhairní cúpla euro á mbárr. Bhíodar an-shíbialta agus thug duine féna ‘chulaith scannanaíóchta,’ scoil an Bhuailtín air féin. Bhí éirí croí ar na scoláirí. Cuireadh na múrtha fáilte roimnhis. Go méadaí Dia sparán gach duine go raibh aon bhaint aige leo. Ní le tarcaisne a deirim é, ach scannáin mar ‘Star Wars’, anois an- choitianta, is brea le scata iad gan scoláiri óga a lua. Is baolach ná raghainn treasna an bhóthair le féachaint ar aon cheann acu. Ní ionann san ná gur breá a leithéidí bheith ag gabháil chugainn. Bás. Cailleadh go hobann Gearóidín Ní Chíobháin ós na Gorta Dubha an tseachtain seo caite Ní ró-fhada ó shoin a fuair a máthair bás ná raibh tuillte aici. Go néadromaí Dia an chrois atá curtha ar mhuintir Chíobháin. Bhí Gearóidín lán do spleodar agus do chleachta. Caid. Tá éirithe go diail le foireann sinsir na Gaeltachta le tamall amois. Bhí an- bhua le déanaí acu in aghaidh Ard Fhearta. Tá siad anois sa chluiche leath cheannais do chomórtas Idirmheánach an chontae. 48 West Kerry Live

and the Monk foilsithe ag Walker Books ‘More than one thousand years ago, in the ninth century, an Irish Benedictine monk, whose name has never been uncovered, stopped in his studies to write down his thoughts. In Old Irish, in rhyming couplets, he described his companion, a white cat who shared his small room. He found similarities in their pastimes. Each was seeking something.... The story of the monk and his cat can also be seen as a timeless tale that is played out again and again all over the world wherever a person is at work accompanied by a beloved pet.’

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service

Terminating A Tenancy Question -Our landlord phoned to ask us to leave the house we have rented for the last three years because he plans to sell the house. Do we have to accept this? Answer - As you have been renting the house for three years, you have what is called a “Part 4 tenancy”, which gives you certain rights. The landlord can only end your tenancy for certain specified reasons. An intention to sell the property within three months counts as a valid reason.

Your landlord must also make a statutory declaration that he intends to enter into an enforceable agreement to sell his full interest in the house. (A statutory declaration is a solemn statement, which must be signed in the presence of someone who is authorised to witness statutory declarations – such as a practising solicitor, a Peace Commissioner, a notary public or a Commissioner for Oaths.)

The RTB’s sample notice of termination for a landlord planning to sell contains sample wording for this statutory declaration, which you should receive along with the notice of termination. If your landlord is found to have evicted you illegally, he may be required to pay you substantial damages. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre

However, a phone call is not a valid form of notice. You must get a written notice of termination, signed and dated, stating the reason for termination and giving you the proper period of notice, which, in your case, as you have rented for three years, is 12 weeks (84 days). When a landlord plans to sell the property, the notice of termination must include a statement that he intends to sell the property within three months after the tenancy ends. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) publishes sample notices of termination with the detailed information that is required in various situations. In the case of a planned sale, the wording of the required statement is: “The reason for the termination of the tenancy is due to the fact that the landlord intends to sell the dwelling, for full considera-
