Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 7th August will be "Adrift". Starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin the film is based on

the inspiring true story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into a catastrophic hurricanes. In the aftermath, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. "Adrift" is the unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love. The following week on Tuesday 14th August the feature will be Rupert Everett's biographical drama on Oscar Wilde, "The Happy Prince". The last days of Wilde are vividly evoked in Everett's directorial debut. Everett himself gives a career defining performance as Wilde, physically and emotionally embodying the literary genius as he lives out his last days in exile in Europe. His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams PEIL. The quest for Sam Maguire glory continues and good luck to the Kerry team in the vital game against Kildare this weekend. Well what a fantastic display of hurling thrills and skills last weekend all played in a most sporting manner by very committed amateur players. May I throw out my simple suggestions to try and cure some of the awful keep ball displays in recent matches which seem more like basketball than gaelic football. My first proposal is that following one handpass the team in posession must then play the ball from the foot before another handpass will be allowed by that team. My second proposal is that once the ball travels past the 50 yard line a team not be allowed to play the ball back past that line while in posession. My third proposal relates to rewarding the skillful players and teams by allowing 2 points for a score over the bar when kicked from say 40 yards from goal. This may need a new dotted line on the pitch in both sides and could be introduced from under 12 games over a few years. Good luck to Dingle Seniors in their Co Championship clash with Shannon Rangers as the team seems to have got into the winning mode again over the past few weeks. EVENTS. The recent annual West Kerry Agricultural Show got an unlucky break this year with torrential rain appearing at the wrong time. However the various events had loads of entries which augurs well for future years. The Cuisle Chorca Dhuibhne Music Weekend was a great success once again but the organisers may want to settle on a definite date for this weekend to have it established as a great mid-summer festival. 6 West Kerry Live

RACES. Cead Mile Failte to all our visitors and particularly to those returning for the Dingle Races which is one of the highlights of not alone this Peninsula but of the Horse and Pony Racing Calendar in the entire country. We encourage everybody to support this wonderful occasion at least once during the 3 day programme and well done to the hard working volunteers for their commitment to ensuring the continued success of the weekend. TIDY TOWNS. Following examination of the large amount of domestic litter being dumped at the Bottle Bank it appears that some people renting houses or operating eir B and B outlets in this area do not provide litter bins for their clients. We have spoken to a number who confirm our suspicions and passed on details to the tourist authorities who deal with registrations for their consideration. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. TAXIS/HACKNEYS. As we are now definately in peak season we remind all accommodation providers to advise your guests to organise transport to and from restaurants or events in advance. This action usually helps avoid unnecessary delays and ensures transport providers can plan their journeys and bookings and provide a more reliable service for locals and tourists alike. ROWING. Good to hear that rowing clubs from the Peninsula are having great success at Regattas at local as well as national level again this year. Dingles Annual 2 Day Regatta will be held on August 18th and 19th with races for all age groups both on Saturday and Sunday. SAFETY. A reminder to all road users to drive, run, cycle or walk carefully while showing patience and consideration for all other road users as we can all help keep our Peninsula a safe place to travel through at all times. Yes and high vis clothing particularly for cyclists, runners or walkers is almost compulsory so please as the slogan goes Be Safe Be Seen. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

This lecture will assess the impact of Sinn Féin in Ireland exactly 100 years ago, the year it triumphed in the general election of 1918. Its victory inflicted a fatal blow to the Irish Parliamentary Party and sidelined the Labour Party. The lecture will look at who Sinn Féin appealed to and why, the strategies and methods employed by the party and its leading figures as it sought to become a nationwide movement, its relationship with the Catholic Church and the attitude of the British government to an increasingly determined Irish republicanism.

Farming News Cutting Of Roadside Hedges To Remain Prohibited Next Month The cutting of roadside hedges is set to remain prohibited next month, the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has confirmed. In a statement the department said: “The general provisions of the Heritage Act 2018 in relation to the introduction of a two-year pilot period whereby roadside hedges may be cut during August will not be in force in 2018". Extension Of Deadline For Submission Of Data For Farm Improvement Plans Announced It was recently announced that the deadline for submission of data for Farm Improvement Plans in Knowledge Transfer Groups will be extended by two weeks until 14 August, 2018. The 31 July deadline for holding meetings of KT Groups remains in place. Following on from discussions with key stakeholders, it was decided to extend the period for Knowledge Transfer Group facilitators to submit completed Farm Improvement Plans under the Knowledge Transfer Programme. In particular, this extension has arisen on foot of concerns expressed in relation to the amount of resources currently being dedicated by advisory services to assisting farmers in dealing with the current weather conditions. This extension will enable advisors and vets to benefit from extra time to finalise actions for their Knowledge Transfer Groups and to progress the outstanding work carried out to date under the scheme. In turn, this allows farmers to derive maximum benefit from the Knowledge Transfer Programme. All participants in Knowledge Transfer Groups are urged to submit their Farm Improvement Plan data as soon as possible. Processing will begin on cases submitted by the original 31 July deadline in order to ensure that any impact on payment timelines is minimised. Supports For Irish Vegetable Growers Welcomed In a move greatly welcomed by politicians and farm lobbyists alike, Supervalu have announced support for Irish vegetable growers in response to the recent drought conditions. The current drought has been challenging for all sectors of Irish farming and none more so than the Horticultural sector. This is a practical example of retailers recognising the importance of suppliers and the challenges that they face in ensuring we are supplied with fresh produce every day of the year. Bord Bia will also roll-out business mentoring and ‘lean’ business learning to businesses in the Horticulture sector supporting growers also. These initiatives support such businesses to maximise the efficiency in their business processes. Bord Bia have been asked to support the vegetable sector through the provision of a new, bespoke programme of business mentoring for impacted businesses. In addition, Bord Bia will also expand and make available its Lean Programme, which has recently been successfully piloted in the horticulture industry. The Scheme of Investment Aid for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector with its recent annual budget of €5m has had a very positive impact through the provision of grant aid to facilitate grower investment in specialised horticultural buildings and equipment. Over recent months the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has also engaged with a number of horticultural growers that are exploring the possibilities afforded by the EU funded Producer Organisation Scheme. Dairy Farmers Face 60% Fall In Income In 2018 The average dairy net margin in 2018 could be down by 60pc, new figures show, with the average dairy farm income could fall to €45,000. However, it says that the scale of the farm income drop is likely to be very farm specific. A new report, highlights the likely impact on the bottom line for Irish farming resulting from this year’s peculiar weather conditions. A long winter followed by an abnormal spring rainfall pattern. This in turn has been followed by summer drought conditions and unusually high temperatures. The initial impact of these weather anomalies was felt via higher levels of winter feeding of cattle and late planting of spring sown tillage crops. This was then followed by high levels of spring rainfall, which resulted in cattle being removed from pasture and re-housed for a period. By the middle of summer, drought conditions led to a collapse 12 West Kerry Live

in grass growth, limited grazing and an interruption to silage production. Dairy and Beef Farm Incomes: The extent of the problem on dairy and beef farms has led to a run-down of existing stocks of silage intended for the coming winter and the diversion of silage land into grazing. Dairy farmers, who tend to operate at a considerably higher stocking rate than drystock farmers, have been badly affected, with many finding that their feed bills have doubled due to the limited availability of grass and fodder. In addition, farm milk prices were reduced in the first half of 2018, and are likely to be back about 10pc on last year's levels. Some dairy farmers are contemplating herd size reductions as a means to limit their feed bills. Nationally, milk production, which had been set to continue to increase in 2018, is now likely to contract slightly, relative to the 2017 level. Meanwhile, cattle finishers have also been forced to increase feed use and take actions to finish cattle early, with suckler-farmers also experiencing higher feed demand. Input Prices: Across the board, these difficulties have been compounded by an increase in feed prices, with fertiliser and fuel prices also up on last year’s levels. Overall, farm income will be down substantially across all the main farm systems in 2018, with dairy farmers experiencing the largest income reductions. While much will depend on grass growing conditions over the rest of the season, it is likely that incomes on dairy farms in 2018 will typically be only half of what was achieved in 2017. Drystock farmers, while not as badly affected as dairy farmers, will also experience an income reduction due principally to higher feed expenditure, with cattle and sheep prices for 2018 unlikely to be dramatically different relative to the 2017 level. In spite of an expected increase in cereal prices coupled with a substantial straw price increase this year, a steep reduction in cereal yields and associated reduction in straw yields will mean that tillage farm incomes in 2018 will be down and could return to the low levels experienced in 2016. Tributes Paid To Prof Seamus Sheehy - Leading Figure Of Irish Agricultural It’s sad to see one of the greats go, but unfortunately one of them have recently passed. Though many may ask who Seamus Sheehy was, he had an enormous impact on Irish agriculture and helped to shape and influence government agricultural policy for years and decades. Tributes have been made to mark the passing of this highly-revered former Professor of Agricultural Economics at University College Dublin (UCD), Prof. Sheehy – who retired as professor of agricultural economics in 2002 – passed away at Gascoigne House, Dublin, last Friday (July 20). Widely acclaimed as a leading figure in Irish agriculture for many years, Prof. Sheehy was also the beloved husband of Sile and the devoted father of Ruth, Kevin, Garret and the late Sile. He was Professor of Agricultural Economics in UCD when I was a student. I learned a great deal from and drank a pit or two with him. That was the great thing about him, he was just an ordinary man, but with an extraordinary ability to teach and comprehend. His contribution to analysis of agricultural policy was sharp, incisive and always worth reading and listening to. He educated and gave confidence to generations of young agricultural students, myself included. I’d would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace. Requiem mass was held on Tuesday July 24 at 11:30am in the Church of St. Columbanus and St. Gall, Milltown, followed by burial at Kilternan Cemetery Park. Prof Seamus Sheehy. R.I.P. West Kerry Uplands Farming Initiative NEWKD in conjunction with the local IFA and other interested parties are organising a public meeting/event in an attempt to improve the lot of Hill Farmers. This meeting will be held in the Chorca Dhuibhne building Wednesday 8th August at 8.30 pm -10 pm to discuss a new Uplands farming initiative which will lead to increased incomes for Uplands farmers. An earlier meeting held in Lispole 2 weeks ago was attended by 40 farmers. Further information from Pat O’ Shea 086 1738187. All welcome ! - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Puck Fair 2018 King of the Dancefloor Jake Carter Gears up for Headliner With the reign of King Puck nearly upon us, last-minute preparations for the annual Puck Fair festival in Killorglin are in full-swing. Each year, the town is transformed into a hive of activity from the 10th to the 12th August and 2018 will be no exception, with a wide range of free family-friendly events on offer over the course of the three days. This year’s celebrations, taking place from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August, will be bigger and better than ever before, with the dedicated voluntary committee pulling out all the stops to ensure the thousands of visitors from home and abroad enjoy and revel in the traditional Puck experience. The recently-unveiled King Puck mural, which now resides permanently on the wall of the CYMS Hall in the town centre, will be a very welcome addition to this year’s proceedings and will no doubt act as a quirky and colourful backdrop for many visitor photographs! When it comes to the range of events on offer, there is something for every age and interest. Aside from the famous Horse Fair that takes place on the first morning of the age-old festival and the vibrant Coronation parade and ceremony, which draws crowds to the town’s main square in their droves, this year’s festival continues to raise the bar with hours of family entertainment, live music and market stalls on the agenda. While the arrival of King Puck is eagerly-awaited, there is another star on route to Puck Fair who might just steal the famous royal’s spotlight. Jake Carter, Dancing with the Stars champion and recently crowned King of the Dancefloor, will this year be the headline act at the age-old festival, taking to the stage on the final night (Sunday 12th August) to entertain the masses, rounding off a jam-packed weekend of fun and merriment. Speaking ahead of what promises to be a busy three days for the people and businesses of Killorglin, President of the Puck Fair Committee, Declan Mangan said: “Puck is always a hectic time for everyone involved in the festival, both directly and indirectly, but it is undoubtedly our favourite time of year here in Killorglin. We love welcoming new faces to the town over the course of Puck Fair and seeing familiar faces return, so the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for months in advance is always worthwhile. We’re excited for the festival to get underway and we invite people from far and wide to join us as we ‘Paint the town Puck’!” Puck Fair Chairman Declan Falvey was equally as enthusiastic about the upcoming event. “We’re ready for Puck Fair to arrive now with all plans and preparations in order. We’re getting more and more excited the closer it gets as this year’s schedule of events is particularly impressive. There’s a great buzz around Jake Carter’s performance, while the usual big events like the Horse Fair, Coronation parade and ceremony, fireworks and more will undoubtedly be as popular as ever. The committee have been getting stuck in to make Puck Fair 2018 the best yet so we’re hoping for a great turn out this year. It’s definitely one not-tobe-missed!”

Éanna Durham needs your help to get the Irish Amputee football team to the World Cup in Mexico this October. Éanna is an above knee amputee from Riasc and has been playing amputee football since 2016. In October 2017 he was one of 13 proud Irish men selected to represent their country in the European Championships held in Istanbul. Éanna and the team performed well and after finishing in the top 6 they have qualified for this year's World Cup in Mexico. As it stands the Irish team does not have enough money to get to Mexico and all the players and staff are working hard to raise the funds needed. On the 10th of August Éanna is putting on a fundraising event in Dick Macks yard. All the proceeds of the event will be donated to the Irish Amputee Football Association so please come along and give what you can. Starting at 2 pm there'll be music and craic all day. If you are unable to attend you can also donate to Éannas Gofundme campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/amputee-football or call into Fiadh Handwoven Design on Main Street, Dingle. Eating for the Time of Your Life! Irene Ní Fhlannúra As we get older, our nutritional needs change depending on age, activity levels, health status and the use of certain medications. Nutrition is an important determinant of health at any time in our lives, but the older population face additional challenges to meet their nutritional needs. The risk of dietary deficiencies increases as we age due to difficulties accessing and preparing nourishing meals, changes to our sense of taste, smell and appetite as well as hindered absorption of nutrients due to aging and some medicines. The food choices we make everyday hold the key to preventing and the management of many of age-related health problems as well as providing energy and sustenance to maintain a healthy, active and independent life. A Blast from the Past There is so much noise about what to eat and what not to eat nowadays that it is not uncommon to feel confused about food choices. Anyone over the age of 50 knows instinctively what real food is all about. It is the kind of fare you were reared on. Plain, simple ingredients – identifiable, seasonal and most likely picked, killed or caught just down the road! Despite immense changes in both food production and supply over the years, children today are carving out a lifetime of diet-related illnesses with their own knives and forks. Decades of fast food and fast talk has eroded our connection with Nature, the only source of true nourishment and replaced it dead, processed foods, which have neither life nor season. Thankfully, there is a shift towards healthier eating lately that has seen a return to the kitchen with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal and local produce. For the younger population, it has been met with the same enthusiasm as most other trends of our times, but for the older folk, it must offer some relief that real food, has made a welcome return to the table. Staying healthy as an older adult begins with connecting with your younger self, recalling those kitchen scenes, smells and tastes and trusting that what you learned then has as much, if not more, relevance today! It’s not just the skin that ages as we get older, we also age on the inside which can pose difficulties for our digestive system. Decreasing gastric juices (stomach acid and enzymes), medications and dental problems can impair the digestive process. The gastric juices are stimulated with the thought of food, choosing and preparing food and the aroma of food cooking is usually enough to get our juices flowing. With age, our sense of smell and taste may be affected lessening the secretion of our gastric juices, leaving us less prepared for the digestive process. Meat and poultry dishes are best cooked over a longer period to help breakdown the tough proteins prior to consumption. Stews, soups and casseroles are best for meat and poultry based meals while fish is best cooked by steam or in foil, baked in the oven, for shorter times. If using dried beans, allow for longer soaking times 24-48 hours and cook for longer 20 West Kerry Live

to increase the digestibility of these valuable foods. Back in the day, many of our rich protein dishes were typically served with fruits and vegetables that also provided the enzymes needed for their digestion. Think back – gammon and pineapple, game with citrus fruits, pork and apple – these were not just culinary pairings but the fruits provided some acidity to help with the digestion of these meats. Chew food until it is liquid before swallowing, your stomach does not have teeth! Also, avoid large quantities of liquids before during or immediately after your main meal. You can take a digestive enzyme supplement to aid digestion. Bitter herbs are used to stimulate the gall bladder, stomach, pancreas and other digestive organs to secrete the necessary enzymes and acids required for efficient digestion. Most bitter herb formulas include herbs such as dandelion, artichoke, milk thistle, sorrel, gentian, fennel, yarrow and peppermint.

and did not do as a younger one. However, it is never too late to eat well and there is no doubt that your health will benefit when you go back to simple, honest, fresh food as Nature intended! What about Supplements? If you were to believe everything you read about supplements you would be rattling with the volume of pills, capsules and potions marketed at the older population. As long as your diet is clean, green and consistently made up of fresh produce the need for supplements can then be based on any shortfalls arising due to the aging process itself. There is widespread evidence as we age we do need extra B vitamins, vitamin C, Omega 3, certain minerals and vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for bone health, cardiovascular and mental health, immunity and the protection from flu, colds, diabetes and cancer. It has been shown to be effective in preventing respiratory infections, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Get your vitamin D levels tested with your GP and supplement according to your results to achieve optimum vitamin D status. Being active and healthy as an older adult is largely dependent on what you ate, drank, did

Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

WEST KERRY

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes backEst. into2005 the unit, Professional Window where the gasResidential is compressed&toCommercial make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity Cleaning Service. to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

WINDOW CLEANING

Offering a Service from One Off Cleaning to a Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs Regular Cleaning Programme. on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of Fully Insured. 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the nurses and staff of Gáirdín Mhuire for the wonderful way they treated my wife Noreen while she was there. They made her so happy with card games and bingo. I would like to thank her companions for playing cards and other games with her. I would like to thank the bus drivers for a great service, they brought her to Ardamore on Monday and Garraí on Tuesday and Wednesdays and the nurse always brought her to the door of her home or put her safely in our car in Garraí. It was to me and our family a great help. I want to thank Mary O'Donnell for getting her ready to go to Gáirdín Mhuire and taking her in her car on most days. I would like to add that I think the people of West Kerry should avail of this wonderful place, 5 days a week for less than €50, that is with transport, dinner and all sorts of games and art and exercise. Some of the big businesses in Dingle should also support as well as the big farmers in the area. S. Devane

Ór Frobisher/Frobisher’s Gold Isabel Bennett Tá scéal Dhún an Óir ar eolas ag ana-chuid de mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne. Ach an bhfuil a fhios ag éinne, go cinnte, cad as a tháinig an t-ainm ‘Dún an Óir’? Tá a fhios againn gur tréigeadh an long trádála, Emanuel of Bridgewater, a bhí ag teacht ó Oileán Baffin san Artach, i gCuan Ard na Caithne sa bhliain 1578. Is cuid don bhflít ag Martin Frobrisher, mairnéalach, taiscéalaí agus príobháideoir Sasanach, a bhí ag lorg slí fhuirist go dtí an tAigéan Ciúin, ab ea í. Bhí an long lán le clocha go gceapadh gur ór a bhí iontu, agus b’fhéidir go bhfuil a creatlach fós ann. Bionn cuid des na clocha san fós le fáil ag bun Dhún an Óir, agus tá samplaí ar taispeáint i Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne. The story of the events that took place in autumn 1588 at the promontory fort at Dún an Óir is well known. This was the scene of a siege and subsequent dreadful massacre. No one, however, is certain about the origins of the name of the site, often referred to as Forto del Oro. What is the ‘Ór’ (gold) that forms part of the name? The ‘dún’ portion is fairly clear, as the promontory is fortified, and may, indeed, have been a promontory fort well before the time of the Second Desmond Rebellion, of which these episodes at Dún an Óir were a part. A possible reason as to why the site got its current name is thanks to the English-born mariner, privateer and explorer Sir Martin Frobisher (born c. 1535), who made three voyages to the New World to look for the Northwest Passage, a route to the Pacific Ocean. On the third of these voyages, as he had in earlier expeditions, Frobisher returned with his fleet of ships laden with stones which were mistakenly thought to contain gold (the stones were actually the black rock metaultrabasite, with no gold content at all, and are between 1900 and 1800 million years old). One of these ships of the 1578 expedition, the large freighter Emanuel of Bridgewater, had already encountered difficulty while caught in a storm in what has since been named Frobisher Bay (a deep indentation in the extreme south-east coastline of Baffin Island, which is in the Canadian

territory of Nunavut, in northern Canada). Probably damaged by ice and storms in the Arctic seas, she had difficulties on the return journey and barely managed to reach the Irish coast. Her captain, Richard Newton, was forced to beach the ship in Smerwick Harbour when more bad weather was encountered , and maps of the Dún an Óir siege site do show a wreck lying close to the shore in this area; was this, perhaps, the Emanuel of Bridgewater? The crew managed to unload about 100 tons of the ‘ore’ it was carrying, and then attempted to repair the ship. Some of the stones were still left in the wreck. Is this from whence the ‘Ór’ name originated? The ship never sailed again, and today one can still find examples of these stones on the shore below the promontory fort, and there are some pieces in the collection of and on display in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne. Further information about these stones, and Dún an Óir, as well as other sites in the area, and a lot more besides, can be found in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne. Camphill News Neal Moran The last number of weeks have been extremely busy for us at Camphill. Here is a little update of the comings and goings in our community. Firstly, as a Community we would like to say we are grateful to all local businesses and local people that have either donated or pledged in our fundraising drive to purchase a new nine-seater wheelchair accessible bus at a cost of €30,000 in 2018. A big thanks to Mike Keough who is sailing around Ireland and England with the aim to link local business and charity’s together to help up to assist in fundraising goals like ours at Camphill. We have been busy trying to get thank you cards and receipts out to those that have donated so far, if you have not received yours you can be sure its on the way and thanks again for your support. On the Saturday of Feile na Bealtaine festival The Dingle Cycle Challenge took place we helped by providing refreshments including freshly baked cakes and other treats as well as teas/coffees to those partaking part in the race . An Conair Bar was the venue for the presentation awards from the cycle race on Saturday the 8th July. Again another humbling show of generosity was shown as we were awarded with a cheque for €3,700 .This money will also be used towards the purchase the new bus. A couple of other things to share with you all. With the beautiful weather we are experiencing at the present, our garden has been a hive of activity with a mixture of people from local volunteers /staff and short-term coworkers, residents and day attendees all working in harmony together. We have harvested over twenty kilos of blackcurrants so far which will make more than enough jam to keep us going for the summer and beyond! Our vegetables and fruits are bursting with life and we are enjoying the fruits of our labour. We have a new short-term co-worker named Benita from Germany who will be here for six weeks. Thomas Ryan who is a resident here has for the second year began work experience in Out of the Blue restaurant for six weeks. Thomas is really enjoying building on the skills he has already developed from working there. Well that’s

What’s Happening in the Hub? We are delighted to announce that our application to FLAG South West has been successful and we have just been awarded EMFF funding under the Fisheries Local Area Development Scheme through BIM to progress with our Internet of Things (IoT) water monitoring project. The aim of this test and trial project is to showcase the potential of IoT technologies to help stimulate enterprise in this area. The output will be an automated monitoring system for conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature, nitrates and water levels. This system will identify changes in, and provide a record of, the above environmental parameters. The project plans to deploy and integrate water sensor nodes with IoT gateway technologies. It will develop a dashboard and a cloud based storage platform to capture the data, store the data, and make the data available for the benefit of community, aquaculture businesses and state organisations. The proposed areas for the nodes are Dingle Bay, Ventry Bay, Tralee Bay, Milltown River and Castlemaine Harbour. This technology, when fully built, will pave the way for advance warning systems and can be reproduced inexpensively for deployment in other localities. We are currently preparing our schedule of events for Autumn and one of these will be regular CoderDojo sessions. We’re always looking for volunteers with fresh ideas to help out so if you have coding skills and can give up to two hours a week of your time to help mentor future generations of coders then we’d love to hear from you! And we don’t just need coders – Dojos benefit from a mix of Mentors providing support, guidance and encouragement to CoderDojo attendees (Ninjas). This initiative, run by the Heritage Council, was established to promote professional standards in the care of collections in Irish museums and galleries. The programme recognises the achievement of those standards through accreditation. The museum applied for Full Accreditation within the Scheme in 2017. Thanks to the hard work of the curator Isabel Bennett, facilitated by the Board of Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne (under whose remit the museum falls) and with the cooperation of her co-workers in Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne and An Comharchumann, Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne was awarded Full Accreditation at a ceremony in Kilkenny Castle on July 10th last. National Heritage Week: Celebrating Community and Water in Annascaul. This year’s National Heritage Week is being held from 18th to the 26th of August and Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group is pleased to be working with the people of the area to organise some events. Saturday 18th August: Community Scanning Day As this is European Year of Community Heritage and the theme of this year’s heritage week is “Share A Story, Make a Connection”, a Community Scanning Day will be held at the Community Care Centre on Saturday 18th August from 2pm-4pm. We invite anyone with interesting photographs, documents or objects to come in and tell the story of their treasures while we record them digitally. We have already been promised some fascinating artefacts that help trace the history of Annascaul and recall some of the vanished aspects of farming, work and life in a rural Irish village. This is the first step in building a web-based Community Archive for Annascaul. A growing number of communities in Ireland are setting up online archives and community scanning days are an idea that originated in the United States. So please join us to exchange a few memories and have a bit of a chat as we help to “share a story and make a connection”. Sunday 26th August: Water Heritage Day The 26th of August is Water Heritage Day and this is being marked in Annascaul by a series of diverse events. At 10:30 am in the Jerome Connor Gallery Dr. Andy Fogarty, Athlone IT will present an interactive lecture. The talk entitled “Water Life in a Pristine River” will be followed by a field trip in which participants will carry out macro-invertebrate analyses of the river. The afternoon events will centre around the theme of “Springs, Wells and Water Fountains”. After lunch John Hanifin will give a walking tour of Annascaul recounting tales of the old wells and springs that supplied water to the village and were often the location of gossip and controversy! This will be followed by a brief talk at the Jerome Connor Gallery about the history of the village’s four attractive pillar fountains or water pumps which the Tidy Towns Action Group is currently restoring. Final details of these events are still being planned. Please keep up to date at the official Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/annascaultidytowns/

Thank you The management committee are very grateful for the huge contributions made by local residents and businesses and for their help in improving and maintaining the village. We hugely appreciate the volunteers who come out in all weathers on a Monday evening and those who do their bit by keeping their patch of the village looking good. We are delighted that nearly 100 euro has been collected from the counter top Wellington Boot collection boxes in recent weeks. Our team of four workers Tom, Gary, J.J. and Mick have been busy carrying out terrific work: thank you all. We are also thankful to Kerry County Council for their grant aid and to Colm Nagle, area engineer, who has helped to complete the improvement of the Back Road after a six-year campaign with the support of our local councillors. The group are now working on a three-year plan with a consultant from Woodrow Sustainable Solutions thanks to funding provided by South Kerry Development Partnership. They already helped us put together this year’s Tidy Towns Competition application (a daunting task!) and will be holding a series of four workshops later this year. We welcome suggestions, sponsorship and project proposals. Get in touch via our email address annascaultidytowns@gmail.com. We confirm that our organisation complies with The Governance Code for the Community, Voluntary and Charitable Sector in Ireland. 36 West Kerry Live

Help With School Costs Question My four-year-old son is starting primary school in September. My only income is my One-Parent Family Payment and €120 from a part-time job. I don’t get any maintenance and I’m worried about the extra costs involved in sending my son to school. What help can I get? Answer As you are getting a social welfare payment, you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) which can help with back-to-school expenses. Your weekly income must be below a certain level. You are currently getting a One-Parent Family Payment of €229.80 (including a child payment) and earning €120. Your weekly income of €349.80 is below the income limit of €425.10 for a lone parent with one child so you qualify for BSCFA. In 2018, the payment is €125 for a qualified child aged 4–11. The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically in many cases. If you haven’t received a letter from the Department by mid-July, you need to apply by 30 September 2018.

The Department of Education and Skills runs a School Books Grant Scheme which is available to State-funded schools to help with the cost of school books. Metatarsalgia

tennis players etc. can lead to inflammation in the joints due to the pounding they receive.

Eddie O’Grady

Being overweight puts extra stress on many areas of the foot including metatarsals.

Metatarsalgia is the name given to pain in the front part of your foot under the heads of your metatarsal bones ( ball of foot, just before toes). It is usually worse when standing or walking etc. and occurs most frequently in the second, third/or fourth metatarsal joints or isolated in the first metatarsal joint. Metatarsalgia usually comes on gradually over some weeks rather than suddenly. The affected area of your foot may also feel tender on palpation by your physiotherapist.

Wearing high heels - forward force on feet increases the pressure on metatarsal area.

What causes metatarsalgia? Common causes identified by physiotherapists include: Pes cavus or high arched foot. Excessive pronation of the foot(foot rools inwards ie. with flat foot). Clawing or hammer toes. Tight extensor tendons of the toes. Prominent metatarsal heads. Morton's foot - here there is a shortened first metatarsal, which results in an abnormal gait putting increased pressure on the second metarsal. Over doing it in athletes such as runners and

poor gait. Sometimes if a metatarsal head has dropped it can be manipulated back into place. Pain relief as a result of this mobilisation, when effective can be immense and long lasting. Simple painkillers such as paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories(NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen may help to relieve pain

Having tightened calf muscles or poor ankle flexibility - this affects the normal gait pattern. Poorly fitting or tight footwear can squeeze the metatarsal joints causing friction , inflammation and poor gait.

Eddie O’Grady

Treatment for metatarsalgia Simple measures can help to relieve the symptoms of metatarsalgia. These include: Resting with your feet elevated where possible. Losing weight if you are overweight. Wearing supportive shoes that are well fitted, low-heeled and have a wide toe area. Metatarsal pads and orthotic inserts for your shoes may help to relieve pain in your forefoot by reducing the pressure placed on the heads of your metatarsal bones.

Blessed with the weather! Thanks so much to everyone who helped out and took part on the day! We will do it all again next year. And Congratulations to Jimmy O'Dwyer and Jane Fitzgerald and all the team who made it happen ! Well done ! Night At The Dogs Annascaul GAA will be holding a fundraising Night at the Dogs at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Saturday 8th September. Tickets, priced at €10, include entry to the race track on the night and a race programme, and can now be purchased from players and committee members. As well as being a fun night out, this is an important fundraising event for our club development plans and we look forward to as much support as possible Birthday Celebrations,Home And Away Alex O'Donnell, Knockglossmore got the surprise of his life when he arrived for a quite pint in The Railway Tavern a few weeks ago ! Awaiting to greet him were his entire family and friends who were there to wish him a very happy 30th. Birthday. Next day Alex flew back to work to Las Vegas a place he has grown to love too and has made some great friends ! And in New York last weekend, Kenneth Quirke, Curra celebrated his 30th birthday along with all his family and many friends Irish and American, including the newest member, baby Mellisa born to his sister Martina in the last six weeks. Congratulations, Alex and Kenneth, Go maire sibh an chéad ! And welcome to Melissa ! Railway Sign Gone Missing It has come to the

notice of local people that the plaque erected on the Water Tower at Camp Junction has been removed. The inscription on the plaque reads “ Tralee & Dingle Light Railway 1891 – 1953. This is the site of Castlegregory Junction”. Maybe somebody out there knows of its whereabouts ! It would be great to have it back where it belongs over the door of the Water Tower in Camp Junction ! Last Jamie Wrenn And Mike Deane Memorial Walk And so the final curtain falls and the Jamie Wrenn/Mike Deane memorial walk in aid of Recovery Haven, Tralee made its way from Tralee to Castle for the last time on Saturday 21st July. The walk in memory of two local Castle legends raised €95,000 for cancer charities over the years. The larger than life wonderful character Mike Deane who passed away two years ago was one of the great supporters of this walk which began when Aughacasla man Jamie Wrenn drove his horse and trap all the way to Tralee accompanied by large numbers of neighbours and friends to raise money for local cancer services. Five hours a day with your children having some fun with their friends, improving their GAA skills, allowing parents some free time during the summer - what’s not to like? SENIORS:County League Division 4 (round 10) Cromane 1-13, Castlegregory 2-18 Our seniors played their final home game of the county league against Castlegregory on Saturday evening last. Once again a poor start left us struggling as we trailed by 1-7 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. Points from Sean O’Sullivan and Sean Walsh all we had to show for plenty of possession. We finished the half 0-4 to 1-9 adrift. In the second half we were more attack-focused as we went toe-to-toe with the visitors. We got back within six at one stage before Castlegregory pulled away again with a series of fine points. A few goal chances went abegging before Mikey Houlihan finally managed a three-pointer late on but it was too little, too late. Our final county league game away to Ballylongford, who have also been relegated back to Division 5, now depends on Kerry’s progress in the AllIreland championship. Team: Paudie McCarthy; Brice Dourieu, Liam Teahan, Mícheál Shaughnessy; Cathal Crosby, John Michael Foley, Conor Sugrue; Sean Teahan, Sean Walsh; Sean Healy, Mikey Houlihan, Shane Ahern; Aidan O'Sullivan, Sean O'Sullivan, Danny Shea. Subs: Eamon O’Connor, Padhraic McMahon, Ian Costello. GGC MINORS: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors began their Central Region Division 2 campaign on Monday last (July 30) with an away game against Ardfert. Over the next six weeks they will also play Kerins O’Rahillys (away), before two home games against Milltown-Castlemaine and John Mitchels.

For the second week in a row the GGC under-14s travelled to play the home team in Ardfert. This time they were much more competitive in this Central Region semi-final but were still second best to an impressive Ardfert side. As a result Ardfert qualified to play Milltown-Castlemaine in the final. Panel: Sean Scannell; Keith Moriarty, Liam O'Neill, Darragh Crosby, Matthew Naughton, Cian Lyons, Tony Óg Duffy, Noah Falvey, Jason O'Connor, Derry O'Sullivan, Charlie Foley, Kealan O'Sullivan, Colm Kingdon, Fionn O’Sullivan, Seamus Moriarty.
