Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The next feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 20th October will be the Woody Allen directed “Irrational man”. Starring Jaoquin Phoenix the film tells the darkly comic story of a burned-out, brilliant professor - one who believes in lessons from life rather than textbooks - who takes a job at a small college where everyone is abuzz. He becomes involved with a teacher as well as a precocious student, but it takes a dramatic, existential act to turn his life around and make him see the world through a much rosier and more positive perspective. The following week on Tuesday 27th the feature will be “Me And Earl And The Dying Girl”. Beautifully scripted and perfectly cast, this charming and quirky comedy-drama is a comingof-age movie with uncommon charm and insight. Winner of the 2015 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, the film is the story of Greg Gaines, an awkward high school senior whose mom forces him to spend time with Rachel - a girl in his class with whom he hasn’t spoken to since kindergarten - who was just diagnosed with cancer. 4 West Kerry Live

Elbert Hubbard Returns to Annascaul. On Saturday October 10th at 12.30pm a bronze bust of Elbert Hubbard is returning to Annascaul, having spent the summer in Cobh as part of the “Lusitania – A Day in May” exhibition. This exhibition was curated by the Cobh Museum to commemorate the centenary of the Sinking of the Lusitania on May 7th 1915. The Elbert Hubbard bronze is part of the Jerome Connor Permanent Sculpture Exhibition which is on view upstairs in the South Pole Inn, Annascaul. Elbert Hubbard was among the 1,196 people who did not survive the Lusitania sinking. Ironically, Hubbard’s reason for being on the Lusitania was to travel to Germany, on a self-appointed peace mission. Hubbard had been a personal friend of the sculptor Jerome Connor who had immigrated from Annascaul to America in the late 1800s. Around the turn of the nineteenth century Connor came to live, study and work in an artist’s colony called the Roycroft Institute in East Aurora New York, which was founded by Elbert Hubbard. Following Connor’s time in the Roycroft, he went on to establish a reputation for himself in America for sculpting public art commissions. Elbert Hubbard’s Grandson Ron founded the religion Scientology. As well as creating the Elbert Hubbard bronze miniature, possibly while studying at 6 West Kerry Live

the Roycroft, Jerome Connor was selected by Hubbard’s son to create a monumental memorial to him. This was unveiled at the Roycroft Institute on June 19th 1930 on what would have been Hubbard's 74th birthday and was attended by Jerome Connor. The full size plaster cast of this memorial was created in Ireland and shipped to Mount Vernon, New York to be cast in bronze. The base of the sculpture is made of Irish granite which was cut in Connor’s Dublin studio and intended to evoke the Old Head of Kinsale, possibly the last sight that Elbert Hubbard would have seen before his death. Jerome Connor had relocated to Dublin in 1925 as a result of winning a commission to create a memorial to lives lost in the Lusitania. Today this monument stands in Casement Square Cobh. It commemorates, not just the torpedoing of the great Cunard liner, but the heroism of the people of Cork harbour who laboured through the day and night of May 7 2015, to bring ashore the living and the bodies of the dead. It depicts an angel of peace contemplating two fishermen, exhausted from the heroism of their effort and the grimness of their task and carrying the inscription Síothcháin i n-ainm De- Peace in the Name of God. Connor was a realist sculptor whose work was modelled from life and one of the visitors to the Cobh Museum

this summer, was Fr. Vincent Kelly, whose uncle Diarmaid Kelly was a model for one of the monument’s fishermen. Fr. Vincent is accompanying the Elbert Hubbard bust to Annascaul on Saturday October 10th as is Yvonne Allen Cobh Museum Curator.

Down by the Sea Have you ever played in the sand when the tide was low With gentle breezes blowing, setting your face aglow? Or watched the fishing boats ploughing the deep Seagulls hungrily squawking overhead To glance at the rugged coast the beautiful work done by ocean’s art On a stormy day, when the seas are wild the thunderous waves beating the rocks with all their might Again tomorrow there will be calm and peace with gentle waves upon the beach It’s there where my heart yearns to be where I spent my carefree days Down by the sea - Extract from “Down by the Sea” by Micheál Ó Séaghda, Gáirdín Mhuire, Dingle. Micheál is originally from Baile Mórdaigh, and lived in Chicago for 50 years. This poem was first published in his book of poems “Ploughing the deep” in New York, 1967. Watercolour painting also by Micheál, painted in Gairdín Mhuire in June 2015. It won 2nd prize in the Agricultural show in Dingle.

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Budget 2015;- A Brief Summary. Farming has been under attack from many angles over the last number of months, and requires a break. Its hard to know if this budget will ease the pressure, but only time will tell. The Exchequer contribution to the expenditure of the Department of Agriculture will amount to €1,351 million in 2016, €1,134 million in current expenditure and €217 million capital expenditure. Clear priorities have been set out in order to maximise the contribution of the agri-food, marine and forestry to the national economy. This represents an overall increase of €109 million over 2015’s. Rural Development Programme - €494m in 2016 Overall, for 2016 € 494m for investment in the Rural Development Programme – up from €439m in 2015 – an increase of over 12.5%. The Rural Development Programme (RDP) will see an investment of €4bn in the Irish agriculture sector over the years 2014-2020. RDP schemes provide vital investment capital in the rural economy, prioritise agri-environmental protection and support the incomes of family farms. Agri–Environment Schemes (GLAS, AEOS & ORGANICS) - €203m €203m will be made available for agri-environmental schemes including AEOS and GLAS. Over 35,000 farmers will benefit under the new Green Low-Carbon Agri-environment scheme which builds on the success of the earlier agri-environment schemes and encourages farmers to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner. This scheme, when fully open, will support up to 50,000 farmers and require funding of €250 million per annum in future years delivering on our commitment to the sustainable intensification of production and making a vital contribution to the rural economy. Areas of Natural Constraint (ANCs) - €195m Announcing the allocation of €195m to ANC the Minister emphasised his continuing strong support for farmers in disadvantaged areas. These payments represent a significant financial boost for both individual farmers and for the wider rural economy. Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) – € 35.8m This €35.8m allocation will provide funding for the Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme which will be at the higher grant rate of 60%. Also benefitting from the scheme will be Dairy equipment, Organic Capital Investments, Pig and Poultry and Sheep fencing. It will also provide funding for the recently opened Animal Welfare, Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme and the Low Emission Slurry Spreading Scheme (LESS). The funding of these very important Schemes will encourage the sustainable development of Irish agriculture by providing a range of new investment opportunities to Irish farmers. Beef Data Genomics Programme - € 52m €52m in funding for 2016 will be provided for this innovative scheme that places Ireland firmly to the forefront in beef genetics globally and enhances our reputation as a world leader in sustainable food production. Increasing the carbon efficiency of the sector will help to reinforce the uniqueness of our offering on EU and world markets.

The effect of the changes made in the last budget, a recent survey by my Department indicates that, in response to the changes in last year’s Budget, there has been a significant shift from conacre to long-term leasing this year. 27% of respondents commenced a new long-term lease in 2015 with almost two thirds indicating that it was the first time they had entered a long-term lease. Four existing tax measures on stock relief and stamp duty relief have been renewed for three years: • 25% General Stock Relief on Income Tax • 100% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Certain Young Trained Farmers • 50% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Registered Farm Partnerships • Stamp Duty Exemption on Transfers of Land to Young Trained Farmers. Agricultural Relief from Capital Acquisitions Tax is also retained Support for the self-employed and SMEs There were also changes made to the taxation of the self-employed. Most farmers, foresters, fishermen and small food processors are self-employed and will see their tax liability fall with the introduction of the new €550 tax credit and reduced USC rates. These changes, along with all of the other changes supporting SMEs in the budget, will bring more equity to the taxation system and will promote and support entrepreneurship. These changes will mean over €800 in additional net income, or 3.5%, based on the average Family Farm Income. The increase in the exemption limit for USC to €13,000 will be of particular benefit to low-income farm families. Young farmers and Land Mobility The introduction of the new tax relief for Family Transfer Partnerships in Budget 2016 along with the retention of the General Stock Relief on Income Tax, Stock Relief on Income Tax for Certain Young Trained Farmers, Stock Relief on Income Tax for Registered Farm Partnerships and Stamp Duty Exemption on Transfers of Land to Young Trained Farmers are evidence of this Government’s strong commitment to young farmers. These build on the measures for Young Farmers introduced in 2015 under the new BPS. Research and Development - €31.2m € 31m has been committed to research and innovation which drives competitiveness, profitability and sustainable economic growth. This funding will also build and maintain critical research capacity and capability in the Irish public research system. In order to help meet the ambitions of Food Wise 2025 and the grand societal challenges of food and nutrition security and climate change we need to invest strategically in agri-food research. Other related measures welcomed: • Reductions in motor tax for HGVs which lowers transport costs for food companies • The retention of 9% VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector • The changes in tax relief for micro-breweries • Improvements in Employment Investment Incentive Scheme, which will benefit food SMEs • Improved CGT relief on sale of a business.

There is also increased provision for the beef sector through the Bord Bia Beef and Lamb Quality Assurance Programme (€6m). The beef sector is also supported through stimulus funding for research and capital investment funding for the processing sector, through the marketing and processing fund (€4.600m). My Department will also provide funding to the beef sector via ICBF to the tune of € 2.2m.

Farm Safety This is one subject which we must be extremely concerned about and must continue to do everything we can to promote farm safety. As a critical component of the TAMS it is now mandatory requirement for all applicants to have completed a minimum of a half days farm safety course before they can claim grant-aid.

Basic Payments - €1.2bn in 2016 In addition to my Department’s expenditure, in 2016 Ireland will also receive some €1.2 billion in direct funding from the EU for the Basic Payment Scheme. “I am pleased to be able to announce that enhanced payments of 70% under the direct payments scheme will begin to issue to farmers next week. This will be of significant benefit in terms of addressing current issues around market volatility and assist in easing cash flow for farmers.

Animal Welfare - Voluntary Organisations An additional €0.6m in funding has been provided to support the Voluntary Sector and welfare organisations. This brings the total funding to €2.7m for 2016 – an increase of over 27%. In addition funding of €2.8m was announced to assist local authorities in reducing incidences of horse abandonment and in advancing horse projects for urban and traveller horse owners. The Department are at the forefront on Animal Welfare issues with the recent introduction of Animal Welfare legislation, including microchipping of dogs.

Agri –Taxation Measures New measures include a major new initiative on ‘Family Transfer Partnerships’ to assist succession. This incentive will encourage important conversations within farm families about succession planning and facilitate the earlier inter-generational transfer of family farms. The removal of forestry income from the ‘High Earners Restriction’ for active foresters and farmers, means that clear-felling income will be tax-free. Forestry plays a huge role environmentally, economically and socially in rural areas; and I believe the benefits of this change will be felt long into the future. The introduction of these and other measures completes the implementation of this comprehensive agri-taxation strategy. 12 West Kerry Live

The total expenditure package announced in this Budget, amounting to in excess of €2.5bn in 2016, together with the progressive taxation measures announced, will support the development of the agri-food sector in meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This is an exciting time for the sector and I expect the impact of today’s Budget to be felt long into the future. For further information contact:- Louis Murchan 087-2857938

Casement Lecture “Ardfert Witnesses at the Trial of Sir Roger Casement” is the title of a lecture to be given by Helen O'Carroll, Curator Kerry County Museum, in Tralee Library next Tuesday, October 20, at 7.30pm. The talk will focus on the five civilian witnesses at the Casement trial in London in 1916. Looking at who the witnesses were, the talk will describe how they encountered Casement on the 21st April 1916 and will discuss the significance of their evidence and what effect it had on the trial. It will also deal with the effect the trial had on them and how, for some of them, their lives were transformed as a result of their involvement in one of the most controversial trials of the 20th century.

Go to Ground for best Winter Nourishment Irene Ní Fhlannúra What a beautiful Autumn we have this year – it’s hard to think of the approaching Winter. Yet, as we enter the darkest, coldest period of the year embracing the natural flow of Earth energy will see us through the Winter in the best of health until Spring comes around again. Winter energy moves inwards, it is centered and grounded deep within us. We can observe this energy shift easily in animals and plants - as energy moves downwards, animals hibernate and plant energy is in the roots rather than the stems and leaves. Hectic working and family lives means this natural flow of energy is often overlooked yet our bodies are instinctively expressing the fundamental principles of Winter - rest, reflection, conservation and storage. To “go with the flow” is the best way you can prepare for the coming season and stave off many of the illnesses associated with Winter. In order to fully indulge this Winter energy let us first acknowledge the connection between ourselves and natural world around us. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Winter is ruled by the water element, which is associated with the kidneys, bladder, and adrenal glands. By the way, Traditional Chinese philosophies are not only for the Chinese, they just understand it better and for the most part, live in harmony with the natural cycles in their environment - we could be a lot healthier if we followed suit. Going back through the ages, our ancestors had no other option but to live close to nature and instinctively honoured the seasons in their daily lives. The typical Winter diet and living practices reflected this Winter energy by nourishing the kidneys, bladder and adrenal glands much the same way as in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM, the kidneys are the source of all body energy (Chi), making them a whole system in the body and mind, not just an individual pair of organs as in Western Medicine. They store all the reserve Chi in the body so it can be used during times of stress and change, or to heal, prevent illness, and age gracefully. They are also associated with hearing and the proper functioning the ear (being similar in shape is SolarofSystems no coincidence). A Tale Of Two Games Tadhg Evans The Rugby Forget everything that happened against the Aussies at Eden Park four years ago. You’ve now witnessed Ireland’s greatest ever Rugby World Cup victory. It was arguably more satisfying even than watching Ronan O’Gara splitting the posts at the Millennium Stadium six years ago with our second Grand Slam at stake. On that occasion, defeat was a constant, macabre threat, and was very nearly realised. Whisper it, but an end to six decades of hurt eventually depended on the imperfect punt of a Welshman. What happened last Sunday, at the same stadium, could not have been more different. Leader after leader was grounded. Ireland continued to stalk one of the most important victories in their history. At half time, the pursuit might well have been foiled, even with a three point advantage in hand. To lose Jonathan Sexton was a belt to the gut, for Paul O’Connell to follow should have been the knife. Sadly, it might well have been a curtailing blow to the legendary Limerick man’s storied career. But it wasn’t to Ireland’s cause, though its echoes sing on. The game’s third quarter was likely to be determining. It could well have been an exercise in damage limitation. What the rugby Gods unravelled was quite the opposite. Ireland occupied the French half for twenty minutes, with a five point reward hardly representing any more than they deserved. Kearney’s major was the crescendo of an outstanding period of play where ten phases were being packaged together with regularity by the Irish collective. One talisman had been swapped for another as Iain Henderson ploughed his way into the consciousness of even the country’s least ardent rugby viewers. Ian Madigan recovered from ten wavering minutes to fill the void left by Sexton more concretely. Even the loss of the ravenous Peter O’Mahony failed to represent a road block to the Irish cause. A French revival briefly threatened after the hour mark, but was sent home by the Irish bouncers. Ireland’s expertise at the set pieces, particularly in thieving French possession from their misfiring lineout, was symptomatic of a brilliant performance carved in the midst of one of the competitions most demanding battles. A war was expected, a war ensued, but the Irish forces responded bravely. Only injuries and the stupidity of the otherwise marvellous Seán O’Brien represented any kind of spillage from the Irish pint glass. The intelligence of Connor Murray in pressing the oval against the padding of the Millenium Stadium’s posts summed up Ireland’s nous. Another seven points was their just reward. We needed to ramp up the gear stick’s potential from our performance against Italy. The guidance of Joe Schmidt allowed that to happen. We’re eighty minutes from our first World Cup semi-final. 20 West Kerry Live

We’re bruised, bloodied, and without some of our prized assets. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting there. Argentina are arguably closer to world rugby’s summit right now than at any other point since their memorable march to bronze medals lit up the 2007 World Cup. Their potential has always been evident, regular matches against the southern hemisphere’s ‘big three’ have made its realisation more likely. A difficult assignment has been left at our door, but most will be delighted that next weekend won’t have us meeting the All-Blacks. On the basis of Sunday’s performance, the All-Blacks will be thrilled that it’s the French, and not the Irish, that await them. ---------------------------------

The Soccer We don’t do realism in this country. At least not when assessing the condition of our national football team. With a win over the world champions, anything seemed possible. Nevermind ‘could’, automatic qualification for France would be attained! The climb-down following a very average display in Warsaw would have been easier to take had we seen it as inevitable – as ought to have been the case. The two best teams in Group E, Germany and Poland, have qualified for European football’s best international tournament. At the starting line, any other outcome seemed inconceivable. The result against Germany altered our perception to the extent that we seem crestfallen in spite of having accomplished our mission, an assignment that looked set for an uncomfortable landing following a disappointing draw against the Scots at the Aviva. O’Neill’s charges have ridden their luck over this campaign, but most teams need to do that in order to achieve their objectives. Can the Republic be satisfied with their qualifying campaign? We most definitely should be, as third place was arguably the best we could have reasonably hoped for. That we were one goal away from surpassing that aim is at the very least surprising. But is it easy to

www.westkerrylive.ie

gauge where we’re at right now, even after a year of competitive play under O’Neill, and taking the attainment of our aims into the equation? Not at all. Our campaign has been consistent only in its inconsistency. Even some of the performances within single games were erratic. Seventy minutes of inferiority in Germany was followed by twenty minutes of unexplainable attacking composure that triggered an equaliser from John O’Shea. Our second half display against the Poles might just have been our best playing period of the campaign. What had preceded it in the opening spell was closer to the opposite. There’s been something wholly unsettled about this trek. With six of our ten games played, failure seemed our certain fate. What odds would you have been offered on the combination for an Irish win against the world champions and a Scottish defeat in Georgia? That’s what it took to sabotage Scottish hopes, and it’s nothing less than astonishing that it happened. When it’s so hard to interpret our form, trying to predict what awaits the Irish in the play-offs is as unenviable a venture as drinking soup with a fork. With a round of matches to go, the teams mirroring our standing in other groups did not appear menacing – nothing that the likes of Jonathan Walters, James McCarthy, Wes Hoolahan, Shane Long and Seamus Colman are incapable of tripping up over two legs. But a week is a long time in sport, and with a few games the entire nature of our fate has been refashioned. Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Hungary, Sweden - all strong footballing nations in their own right, currently stand to join us as peers. Many of the teams that have already qualified would arguably have been more malleable. Perhaps the play-off games that lie in store will help us to determine where this Irish team stands under the stewardship of O’Neill. Sadly, if we’re to finally embrace realism, it might not even be among Europe’s 24 best teams.

Congratulations to Listowel Tidy Towns Committee on their fantastic success in this years competition. Well done also to all the other towns and villages around the county on the improvement in their marks which reflect the great community efforts which is needed to earn any increase in this annual assessment. We hope that many of our readers will by now have taken the time to read the adjudicators report on his/her visit to Dingle which is available at www.tidytowns.ie and click on Reports where the full details are on display. We wish to acknowledge the generous donation to our Committee from Ken the organiser of the Dingle Marathon which is in recognition of the local help with stewarding the event which was once again a huge success this year. Mile Buiochas also to all who contributed to our Church Collection which will be put to good use in the maintenance and promotion of our town. We hope to organise a Public Meeting within the next few weeks to start planning for the 2016 season and hopefully get some new faces involved in either the administration or work side of the Tidy Towns effort. Many people have offered support in the past but our weekly work evenings have not been well supported so new thinking and fresh ideas are badly needed to see our town improve further in the year ahead. The Town Park is looking very well at present and it was great to see so many activities there during the Food Festival. Can I raise the point again that what a shame the plans for the proposed new playground are not incorporated in the existing facility as to me it is the only suitable venue with scope to cater for all age groups in this fine 2 acre site right in the middle of town. What many other towns and villages in the country wouldn't give to have such a facility available in their areas.

The Dingle Skellig Hotel are thrilled to announce that they are the proud 2015 winner of Ireland’s Family Friendly Hotel in the Keelings Farm Fresh Gold Medal Awards in association with the Hotel & Catering Review. Now running for over two decades these awards are amongst the most sought after in the industry as they recognise and reward excellence in hospitality and catering operations throughout Ireland. General Manager of the hotel, Graham Fitzgerald and his team were delighted to receive the title and as he explained “this award is extra special to us here in the hotel as the voting was carried out by both a mystery guest and a public vote. Knowing our guests have voted for us is the best acknowledgement we could receive.” The hotel has lead the way in family holidays in Ireland now for over four decades and each year they have focussed on developing the product and delivering a better experience. It has excelled in its hospitality, comfort, excellence of service and warmth of welcome throughout the years. At the Dingle Skellig Hotel Graham and his team fully understand that for many families keeping kids of different ages happy can be one of the greatest challenges on holiday. The family market has always been a key focus for them and they truly understand that if the kids are happy then everyone is happy. A unique aspect of the hotel is that guests as young as four months old are welcomed in to their Skellig Creche which specifically caters in the hotel for children aged 4 months to 4 years old, providing a safe and welcoming environment with lots of fun activities.

The idea of the Wish Jar is that guests at an event will write short messages / wishes and place them inside the jar. NUACHT - SCROGALL – NEWS With the summer rush over and the nights closing in, here at Scrogall TV we have plenty lined up to keep you busy this autumn. Over the mid-term break, starting on the 26th of October, we will be running a film making workshop for teenagers, who will spend a week making their own horror film. Along the way they will be get a chance to try out scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera work, lighting and sound; cost is €50. On the 29th of October our night classes for adults will begin, covering all aspects of film making from script to screen. The classes will run once a week for four weeks, with extra days for filming on location, and the fee is €80, or €60 for anyone in receipt of social welfare. Anybody interested in either workshop can phone us on 085-7857640 or email scrogalltv@gmail.com or visit our wordpress blog for more information. Details of the gathering will be posted on Facebook etc or you can contact us directly by phone or email. If you would like to hear more about the project or you are interested in getting involved, you are more than welcome to join us on the night. With the cooler weather beginning, swimming in the ocean might be far from your mind, but if you haven’t already, it’s worth taking a look at the story on rip currents that we produced during the summer. In this special extended report, local water safety experts tell you everything you need to know about rip currents – what they are, how to spot them, and what to do if you find yourself caught in one. In our most recent story, Deirdre Griffin reports from the gathering of local choirs in Dingle town for “One Day One Choir”, a global choral initiative to unite people globally to sing for peace on and around Peace Day, September the 21st. You can find both of these reports and more at http://scrogalltv.wordpress.com Tá deireadh tagtha le séasúr na stróinséirí agus tá na hoícheannta ag fascadh isteach orainn fé láthair. On their 3rd Vintage Car Run in honour of Paidi Ó Sé we were presented with a cheque of €210 for Camphill, handed over by Moira. Thank you for your generosity.

Camphill Dingle News Christoph Jensen What a great Food Festival Dingle had on the first weekend of October. The weather certainly played its part in attracting all these visitors. Our little stall in front of the Old Coach House attracted many people trying a guess on the amount of milk needed for the production of the cheeses displayed. The guesses ranged from 4 litres to 305 litres (!!) … well the nearest guesses were 31 and twice 32

litres respectively. Congratulations to the winners and a big Thank You to the donors of the prizes, a meal at the Skellig Hotel and a meal at Lilly’s. Camphill Community Dingle with your help raised nearly €650. Sorry to those who expected one of our Dexter-cows to be exhibited … she was just too shy to be taken to town … instead the Old Coach House lawn was adored with two of our pet-lambs. Two co-workers and three residents went on a pilgrimage to Lourdes also over the first weekend of October, returning on Tuesday. A wonderful and fruitful time was had by all. We are grateful to the local organizers of this trip for inviting the three residents of Cam-

Cloistear liú ó thosach an tí. An t-athair Billy agus goimh ari. Ritheann Maidhcí, Aoife agus Julie ar ais isteach san óstán. Leanaim go mall iad ach dúntar an doras le plab. Táim fágtha im aonar sa cheo.

‘Cogar, arsa an chúirt, ‘Ná thiocfá mo threo, tá gairdiní, clathacha, parlús peileacháin, séipéil ssna ghairdíní agus cairpéad dearg i mo thigh folamh. Cad ab áil dhuit dul tharam go dtí do bhungalow nua gan bhreáthacht gan mheirg ach glanacht ghrána. Seo leat suas an boithrín is bí ag gliúicíl, ní fios cad a faightear.’ Sa cheo rothaím suas an cosán agus casaim isteach i dtreo an óstáin ach tá an doras dúnta agus babhalta an áirde. Siúlaim i bhféar airde mo ghlúine ag féachaint le m’ais i seomraí leapacha le fuinneoga gan ghloine. Cipíní agus duileoga bailithe ar mhata crapaithe. Tugaim aghaidh ar chúl an tí ina gcloisim fothrom ag doras oscailte. Go fiosrach leanaim an ghlór agus tagaim ar seomra an niocháin. Seanghiobail éadaigh, bairliní agus tuáillí titithe ar úrláir suiminte, báite ag taiseacht. Cloisim doras á dhúnadh ‘s coiscéimeanna siúl. Mo chroí ag preabadh, deinim iarracht ealú. Chím mála crochta ar tháirne. Cad a dhéanfad, tá deireadh liom. Lámh ar mhuinéal mo gheansaí, ceistíonn garda mé; ‘Cad tá ar siúl anseo agat?’. Mo ghuth tachtaithe le heagla . Sar a bhíonn mo phort seinnte tagann Ministéir Protastúnach ar an láthair ‘Scaoil leí a mhac. Ní de shloicht an IRA í siúd. Ta do thigh slán.’ Le caochadh súile ón aingil protastúnach leanaim isteach é faoi dhíon ina mbraithim braoininí uisce ag titim ar m’éadan. Deanaim dearúid ar an ngarda atá i mo scrúdú le maide ina lámh agus fonn air stiall a bhaint asam aon soicind. Suas céimeanna linn gan fhios cá bhfuilim ag dul san áit dorcha seo ar chumadh beairic na ngardaí. Stopann an Ministéir Protastúnach ag doras dubláilte. Féachann sé orm agus meangadh mór gáire air. Tá rud éigin á cheilt ach is gairid go bhfaighfear amach é. Le brú ó bhos a láimhe bíonn gaoth ag an doras lena oscailt láidir. A leithéid de radharc; cairpéad dearg, bord agus bia, daoine leathmheidhreach ag fíon dearg. Síos liom an chistin ag éisteacht le cleataráil. ‘Fiche dinnéar eile, táid stiúgtha’ a bhéiceann mo chol ceathar Siobhán atá ag obair mar chailín oibre. Tá strus ar Billy, úineir agus cócaire an óstáin. Buailim le Julie, iníon Billy is suíomíd mide ar an staighre. Bíonn gach ‘hello Róisín agus hello Julie’ ag na daoine a théann tharainn ar a slí go dtí an mbeár. Anall a thagann máthair Julie, Bríd ag bailiú gloiní agus gach aon ‘hi’ aici nuair a chíonn sí sinn. Isteach leí láithreach laistiar den mbeár ag líonadh dhá ghloine líomanáid agus a lámh ag póirseáil i mbosca taytos. Nach sásta a táimíd. Ní fada a sheasann sé nuair a chímíd Eva, iníon an tOirmhinneach Gubbins mbaclainn a h-athair agus í ag pilaliú le cráiteacht. Chuala go raibh pian ina drandal agus í ag fás fiacail. ‘Shhhh a leanbh’ a bhíonn Gubbins ag siosarnaigh dá iníon agus gan aon cheann á thógaint aige den slua agus an cleataráil fud faid an bheár. Go cúthaileach tagann James Connor sall chuige le gloine bainne a bhí crúite aige ar maidin I mBaile Eaglaise. Cuireann Gubbins a mhéar isteach sa bhainne agus fágann braon den súlach bán ar liopaí Eva. Tugann sé seo faoiseamh ón olagón. Halloween is fast approaching and once again Killorglin is hosting a Fright Night on Halloween Night Saturday October 31st Once again the highlight of the evening will be the Halloween parade at 7.30pm. The parade will be for children and adults alike. The focus being, Fun for the Family. The parade will begin at the Fishery at 7:30pm and will be lead by the Killorglin District & Pipe Band and will work its way uptown, finishing up outside the K.C.Y.M.S. hall. As well as some frightening sights along the route, there will be a disco for the little ones in the CYMS hall after the parade. Also many of the local Pubs will be holding entertainment on the night, so when the little ghosts and ghouls are all tucked up in bed, the adults can enjoy the rest of Halloween, in full fancy dress. Therefore, we urge everyone to come out and show their support on the night, and make it a Halloween to remember in Killorglin. Pubs: We would hope that all the pubs/clubs in town would decorate the inside and outside in a Halloween theme. If possible, provide entertainment. Also, as we are encouraging adults, as well as children to get into the spirit of the occasion, we would hope yourselves and your staff will dress up. This will encourage people to stay out and make an evening of it. Businesses: We would hope that all the local businesses in the town would decorate their premises in the spirit of Halloween. Also, to encourage people, we would hope that all staff working on the day gets dressed up in fancy dress, even if it is the smallest offering, no need for full costumes. Get into the Festive spirit. In December 1589 Richard Hacklvyt, an Englishman, wrote an account of his visit to Dingle while his ship, en route for the Azores, sheltered in Ventry harbour. Some of the crew were injured and needed medical attention. The following is a modernised version of his observations and findings. ‘The sick and wounded men were carried to the next principal town, called Dinglenacush, three miles from Ventry harbour to the east. Here we refreshed ourselves while the Irish harp sounded sweetly in our ears, and we, who were half dead, had ourselves restored to us again. This Dinglenacush is the chief town in all that part of Ireland. It has one main street with some smaller ones running off on either side. It seems to have had gates at one time at either end, to open and shut as a town of war. It also has a castle. The houses are strongly built with thick stone walls and narrow windows and are like castles and we were told that this was necessary as defense against the Wild Irish or otherwise. All but four of the houses in the town were burnt down and ruined by the Earl of Desmond. During the defense of the town the locals confessed that they had to eat dead men’s carcasses to survive. The town is again somewhat repaired. Normally there are no chimneys in their houses, except for the better ones, and the smoke was very troublesome to us while we stayed there. Their fuel is turf of a good quality and furze. There are few trees in the area which makes building expensive and not much lime which must be brought from afar. But there are plenty of stones which they use to divide land and the land seems to be nothing else but rocks and stones. But it is very fertile and produces plenty of grass and grain which is evident from the abundance of cattle. We had good muttons for two shillings, good pigs, and hens for three pence each. They are not a very industrious people and only produce enough to serve from hand to mouth. There seems to be little money here and perhaps this caused them to double and treble the price of many things we bought from them as compared with prices before we came. Good land could be rented for four pence an acre per annum. There are mines of Alum, tin. brass and iron. We saw stones that were as clear as crystal and shaped like diamonds. The small children ran bare-footed and bare-legged in the middle of winter, often with no other apparel except for a mantle to cover their nakedness. The chief officer of their town they call the Sovereign who has the same office and authority as our mayors in England with sergeants to attend him and bear the mace before him. We were first entertained at the Sovereign’s house, which was one of the four to withstand the Earl of Desmond and his rebellion. They have the same form of prayer, word for word, in Latin that we have in England. They had neither bell, drum or trumpet to call the parishioners together for Church but they wait until their Sovereign comes and then they that have any devotion follow him. They make their bread all in cakes and for the tenth part the bakers bake for all the town. We purchased from ten to twelve tons of beer. On December 20th we set off again for Ventry having well provided ourselves with fish, water and other things necessary, being accompanied by Sir Edward Denny, his lady and two young sons’.

Warming Beef and Celeriac Casserole Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School This is time of year we can take a small breath and relax a little, another busy season is slowly winding down, and the Dingle Food Festival is over for this year. What an amazing success it was! So a massive thank you to all involved and to all who supported it. So now that the evenings are getting darker it is a perfect time to start to get out the casserole pots and think of the endless dishes we can make for the rest of the months to come. The following recipe is all about cooking low and slow, put a little work in at the beginning and then pop it in the oven and sit back for a few hours while all the flavours develop to give you with a beautiful rich and tasty dish. Slow cooking is where the heart of cooking is; it allows you to really get massive flavours into dishes and to transform tough cuts of meat into mouth-watering soft and tender strands of meat. Our new program for Dingle Cookery School is now available and all details are on www.dinglecookeryschool.com

Place a casserole pot over a medium to high heat, once it is hot add some oil and brown the meat in batches. Get a nice brown colour on all of the meat. Once the meat has browned transfer it to a plate. Add a little oil to the pot and then add the bacon and cook it until it has a nice colour. Add in the shallots and garlic and cook for a further 3-5 minutes while you keep stirring and allowing the vegetables to brown. Add the tomato puree and cook it for 2-3 minutes to remove the bitterness. You can now add in the celeriac and thyme, continue to cook for a few minutes. Add in the mushrooms and continue to keep cooking it for a further 3 minutes. Pour in the red wine and scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon, which will allow it to deglaze and remove all the brown bits from the pot. Cook this until the

wine has reduced by half. Add the stock and bring it to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes. Add in the beef. Place a lid on the casserole and put it in the oven for at least 3 hours. Aim to leave it longer and check it occasionally to make sure there is still plenty of liquid in there. Once you are ready to serve season it well and add plenty of chopped parsley Serve with a creamy mash potato. Enjoy!!!

Tá ár n-ealaíontóir chugainn arís. Tá súil agam go mbeidh an t-am aici an damáiste a dhein an stoirm bháistí úd don mhúrphictiúr iontach de Fháil an Ógánaigh Íosa sa Teampall a dheisiú. Chaitheamar an falla timpeall an dorais a phointeáil arís. Beidh leabhar aoibhinn dá saol go dtí seo mar Oiltireach Ealaíontóra (ar fuaid an domhain) á sheoladh i gCúl an tSúdaire i gcóngar Phort Laoise ar an Máirt 13 Deireadh Fómhair. Caithfead a bheith ann le cóipeanna a fháil le díol sa Díseart sara mbeidh siad go léir sciobtha. Beidh a lán agaibh le feiscint sna grianghrafanna breátha daite atá clóite go cliste ann. Tá an Gairdín Urnaí á ullmhú dá thíolacadh . Tá trí binsí le dul ann. Cosnaíonn siad €250 an ceann. B’fhéidir gur mhaith le fear gnó, nó lónadóir nó dhó nó trí ceann a urrú agus a n-ainm a chur air nó orthu. Tá leabhar eile fós ar an mBlascaod á fhoilsiú ag An Sagart, An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile leis an Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaithe. Tá sé bunaithe ar scríbhinní a mháthar, beannacht Dé léi, Nóra Ní Shé, a chaith seal ag múineadh i Scoil Náisiúnta an Bhlascaoid. Is é seoladh an leabhair seo an clabhsúr ar Cheiliúradh an Bhlascaoid i mbliana. Tharla sé sa Mhúsaeum tar éis Aifrinn Ghreagóraigh an Domhnaigh a bhí ar Radio na Gaeltachta ar 11am ar an 11 Deireadh Fómhair. Dhein Hellen Ní Shé an seoladh go bríomhar tuisceanach. Seachas slaimice dá leabhar Thar Bealach Isteach tá aistí eile de chuid Nóra i gcló nua-aimsire a bhaineann leis an mBlascaod anseo agus mar bharr arsin go léir tá an bailiúchán béaloidis a dhein na daltaí scoile féna stiúir anseo agus é sin in eagar go scolárata. Ní raibh riamh an oiread cuairteoirí againn sa Díseart agus a bhí sa samhradh geimhreata seo. Fé láthair tá slua mór Francach timpeall ag féachaint ar na seoda ealaíne atá againn agus d’imigh na céadta bróisiúr Fraincise uainn. Bhí an t-ádh linn go raibh na mílte bróisiúr Béarla den Frescó againn; bhí bosca breise díobh faighte againn ó inné. Leagadh seanchrann úll agus an méid de na húlla a thit leis nár sciob na héin leo deineadh subh agus píóga díobh. Is mór an ní go bhfuil an séipéilín nua i Reilig an Ghorta réidh le hoscailt anois. Molaimis an coiste dícheallach a chir slacht ar an mbealach chuige agus chuir slacht chomh maith ar an reilig féin ina bhfuil an oiread sin de mhairbh an ghorta agus an chalair agus an bhochtanais ina luí fén gcré; tá leis leanaí óga ann. Beidh Aifreann dóibh go léir sa séipéilín ar 3pm 3 Samhain. Beidh sólaistí ar fáil sa Díseart ina dhiaidh sin.

News from the Díseart On Saturday 10 October in the forenoon we had The Dutch Gregorian Choir practicing in the Díseart Chapel for their part in the Radio na Gaeltacht 11am Mass on Sunday as well as for the Mass that evening. The Gabor Gregorian choir was practicing in the Nanó room. We had a bus load of Springfield visitors who were staying in Benners admiring the art in the Díseart building, starting with the new murals in the hallway and proceeding along the corridor with its exhibition of An Sagart books and borrowings of e.g. The Wb codex facsimile and that of the Book of Lismore from Fr. Pádraig collection in the Dingle Library. We luckily had got 2,000 brochures of Ella’s Fresco on Friday as they were much in demand. Ella herself is due here soon for a few days before she sets out for the launch of ‘ Nano’s Pilgrim Artist’ on 13 October in Portarlington. The little chapel in the Famine Graveyard is now ready and will be officially opened with Mass for all the dead buried there, many from hunger and cholera, others from plain poverty; while some innocent young chidren ar buried there as well. They will all be honoured and prayed at the Mass 3pm 3 November; the voluntary committee who have worked unknown to many of us to get all this work done are to be congratulated. All are welcome to the Díseart for some light refreshments afterwards. Beannacht Dé le hanamnacha na marbh.

Learning a Language/ Ag Foghlaim Teanga

- An Dr. Karen Ní Chlochasaigh Although the road to learning a language can be long and testing at times, studies show that there are many ways to facilitate your learning. Success in language learning is often associated with an innate ability for languages, where successful learners are believed to have ‘a good ear’ for languages. Linguists believe however, that this is not always the case and that other factors such as motivation or an individuals’ approach to learning can contribute just as greatly to language learning success. No matter what your motivation, given a high level of motivation it is more likely that you will succeed in keeping on track and realising your language learning goals. Language awareness is another factor, where learners have a good understanding of themselves as learners and reflect upon their strengths, difficulties and common language mistakes during the language learning process. They may also keep a language diary where they record new vocabulary, grammar and useful phrases. Successful language learners have been documented as using a range of suitable learner strategies, for example, using a newly learned phrase in conversation or in writing to aid in remembering it. A positive attitude towards language community, culture, learning approach and receiving corrections is another major factor recognised in promoting language acquisition. Is fíor gur bóthar fada atá san fhoghlaim teanga agus gur féidir leis an turas foghlama (learning journey) a bheith crua (deacair / difficult) ag amanta. An dea-scéal (good news) ná go bhfuil bealaí (ways) ann leis an turas seo a éascú duit féin (a dhéanamh níos éasca duit / to facilitate your learning), bunaithe ar thaighde (research) ar an bhfoghlaim teanga in Éirinn, san Eoraip agus ar fud an domhain. Pléitear (discussed) thíos roinnt factóirí a bhaineann leis an bhfoghlaim teanga éifeachtach (effective language learning). Ceaptar go mion minic go mbaineann foghlaim éifeachtach teanga le cumas (ability) i dteangacha, sé sin go mbíonn bua ó dhúchas (a native gift) ag duine. Creideann teangeolaithe (linguists believe), áfach, nach mbaineann an scéal le cumas amháin ach gur féidir le factóirí eile, cuir i gcás, inspreagadh láidir (a strong motivation) nó cur chuige an fhoghlaimeora (learner approach) a bheith chomh tábhachtach céanna san fhoghlaim teanga. ‘Given motivation anyone can learn a language’ a deir Corder. Is cuma cén t-inspreagadh atá agat (no matter what your motivation); cáilíocht (a qualification) a bhaint amach, teanga a labhairt sa bhaile / sa phobal nó caitheamh aimsire, má tá an t-inspreagadh láidir go leor, tá níos mó seans ann (it is more likely) go n-éireoidh leat (that you will succeed) fanacht ar bhóthar na foghlama teanga agus go sealbhóidh tú í (that you will acquire that language). Creidtear go láidir chomh maith má bhíonn feasacht teanga (language awareness) láidir ag foghlaimeoirí go n-éiríonn níos fearr leis an bhfoghlaim. Bíonn féinfheasacht (self-awareness) ag foghlaimeoirí nuair a thuigeann siad iad féin mar fhoghlaimeoirí (when they have an understanding of themselves as learners), na buanna (strengths) agus na laigí (weaknesses) a bhaineann leo, na deacrachtaí (difficulties) a bhíonn acu agus conas dul i ngleic leo (how to approach them). Is fiú go mór an machnamh (reflection) seo a dhéanamh ort féin agus an cheist a chur: cén saghas foghlaimeoir mise? 40 West Kerry Live

Is minic a choiméadann foghlaimeoirí a n-éiríonn go maith leo san fhoghlaim teanga dialann foghlama (learner diary) ina mbíonn taifead (a record) de na hiarrachtaí (efforts) a dhéanann siad, na botúin choitianta (common mistakes) a dhéanann siad agus na rudaí nua atá á bhfoghlaim acu faoin teanga ann; foclóir (vocabulary), frásaí úsáideacha (useful phrases), gnéithe gramadaí (aspects of grammar). Moltar (it is recommended) go láidir a leithéad a dhéanamh chun spriocanna (aims) a leagadh síos agus an dul chun cinn (progress) atá á déanamh agat sa teanga a fheiscint. Is gnách (it is usual) go mbíonn tuiscint ar straitéisí / bealaí maithe foghlama (effective learning strategies) ag na foghlaimeoirí maithe teanga seo chomh maith, sé sin go mbíonn teicnící sealbhaithe (acquired techniques) acu a chabhraíonn go mór leo san fhoghlaim teanga. Mar shampla, féachaint ar ghramadach in úsáid i bpíosa léitheoireachta seachas ar an riail gramadaí ina haonar, iarracht a dhéanamh focal nua foghlamtha a úsáid sa chaint nó i bpíosa scríbhneoireachta, deiseanna cumarsáide a thapú (seize opportunities for communication) nuair is féidir srl. Is fiú go mór machnamh a dhéanamh ar na bealaí a mbíonn éifeachtach duitse mar fhoghlaimeoir, cuimhnigh nach ionann aon bheirt fhoghlaimeoir (no two learners are the same) agus go mbíonn a bealaí féin ag gach duine. Tá sé feicthe arís is arís eile go mbíonn baint ag meon agus dearcadh (attitude and outlook) i leith na teanga leis an bhforbairt (development) a dhéantar san fhoghlaim teanga. D’fhéadfadh le meon dearfach (positive attitude) maidir le hoidhreacht, cultúr, pobal teanga, cur chuigí foghlama agus ceartúcháin (corrections) cur go mór leis an bhfoghlaim teanga, de réir an taighde. Mar sin, más ag tosú amach (starting out) ar do thuras foghlama atá tú nó má tá céimeanna leagtha síos agat cheana féin, smaoinigh go bhfuil turas fós romhat ach go bhfuil cleasanna (tricks) áirithe gur féidir leat triail a bhaint astu chun cabhrú leat ar do bhealach. Go n-éirí go geal leat ar do thuras! Cúrsaí Gaeilge do Dhaoine Fásta/Irish Language Classes for Adults in Dingle Tapaigh an deis láithreach! Whileaways Return to John Benny’s On Bank Holiday Monday the 26th October John Benny Moriarty’s welcome The Whileaways back to Dingle. This fantastic trio comprises the talents of Noriana Kennedy, Nicola Joyce and Noelie Mc Donnell who came to know each other’s singing over a number of years, playing in sessions in the folk melting pot of Galway city. Dipping their toe in the water as a trio, they were hailed as ‘a knockout of the festival’ at the legendary Port Fairy Folk Festival in 2012. Overwhelming public reaction prompted a recording, and their self-titled debut album was recorded in a log cabin in Co Galway. Most certainly imbued with the sounds of their respective travels on both sides of the Atlantic, this debut was given a four star review from the Irish Times; “this is an audacious debut which hollers for a chance to be heard in a live setting, so rich is its lyrical tapestry”

Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 18

2015

Saibhreas agus Dán na Teanga eagarthóir- Mícheál de Mórdha foilsithe ag Coiscéim Tá Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 18, Ceiliúradh na bliana 2013, díreach foilsithe. ‘Rith sé le Coiste an Cheiliúrtha agus ócáid 2013 á beartú againn, gur cheart aird ar leith a dhíriú ar staid na teanga dhúchais, mar a bhí agus mar atá, i nDúiche Dhuibhneach. Cuireadh suim thar na bearta sa téama seo agus bhí tionól den scoth ann inar chíor agus inar chardáil saineolaithe den scoth, stair agus staid na teanga sa dúiche ársa seo. Ar ndóigh, ní inniu ná inné a tugadh faoi deara go bhfuil labhairt na teanga dhúchais ag dul i ndísc le blianta fada agus go bhfuil gá le beart práinneach chun í a choimeád ina beatha, mar go bhfuil sí anois sna croití deireanacha... Tugadh cainteanna breátha mar gheall ar shaibhreas na teanga. Baineadh úsáid as an nua-theicneolaíocht chun sean-thaifid a chur i láthair. Chuir na sean-chainteanna sin an scríbhneoir seo siar ar bhóithrín na smaointe go dtí an dtráth ag a raibh sé féin ina shlataire i nDún Chaoin, áit a raibh Gaelainn chomh saibhir inti ag an am sin agus a bhí in aon áit eile sa tír. B’shin é an t-am go raibh Gaelainn á labhairt ins gach aon tigh sa pharóiste agus an t-am ná raibh Béarla ag mórán, mar a bhí le glúnta gan áireamh roimhe sin... Táthar ag troid go fóill chun cearta teanga a bhaint amach agus ceisteanna á gcur anois an bhfuil deireadh ar fad tagtha leis An Ghaeltacht, per se. Is fiú na haistí ar fad a léamh go mion mar go bhfuil a scéal féin faoi staid na teanga á chur in iúl ins gach ceann acu.’ Mícheál de Mórdha
