Operation Pollination – Lets Get Buzzing for Kerry Bees! Help is needed for the bees and pollinating insects of Kerry! The recently published All Ireland Pollinator Plan (http://www.biodiversityireland.ie/pollinator-plan) outlines how Irish insects that help in the pollination of our plants, trees and vegetables are in decline. Many of these pollinating insects are needed by our farmers to pollinate our home grown crops of fruit and vegetables – the annual value of pollinators for human food crops has been estimated at €53 million in Ireland alone.

Yet nearly one third of our 98 bee species are threatened with extinction. They are declining because we’ve drastically reduced the areas where they can nest and the amount of food our countryside provides for them. Our tendency to tidy up the landscape rather than allowing wildflowers to grow along roadsides, field margins, and in parks and gardens is also playing a big part in fewer of these resources being available. Although plants like Begonia are attractive is public planting schemes, they provide little or no food resources for our hungry pollinators. In contrast the humble Dandelion provides an essential early food source for insects that emerge in Spring – if the Dandelion is left to grow that is! To help stop this decline, Kerry County Council in collaboration with various Tidy Town groups, residents associations and Church and community groups is inviting interested members of the public to attend a public meeting on Tuesday 2nd February, 7.30pm in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee. The meeting will discuss ways to promote wildlife in our towns, villages and gardens. The meeting is free and open to all, no booking required. Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

Both the upcoming features at the Dingle Film Club feature stellar performances from Kerry’s own Michael Fassbender. On Tuesday 26th February the feature will be Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. Faithful to the original play without sacrificing its own cinematic flair, Macbeth surpasses expectations on the strength of a mesmerizing Fassbender performance in the lead role. This thrillingly savage interpretation of the Scottish Play features glorious locations across the bleak and wintery Highlands of Scotland in a gripping, intense, and beautifully shot film which joins the upper echelon of big-screen Shakespeare adaptations. The following week on Tuesday 2nd February the featured film will be “Steve Jobs”. The Danny Boyle directed film again features Fassbender in the lead role for which he has been Oscar nominated. Looking behind the scenes of the digital revolution, “Steve Jobs” paints a complex portrait of the man at its epicentre whose drive to revolutionize technology was detrimental to his personal life. With a stellar supporting cast including Kate Winslet, who is also Oscar nominated, the film has been garnered with much critical acclaim for the central performances and dizzying dialogue

Am na prátaí arís. Beidh an Féile ar siúl againn níos déanaí i mbliana,

toisc nach raibh prátaí den caighdeán ceart ag a lán fásadóirí in am don Féile anuraidh agus i 2014. Mar sin, comórtais An Spud-off Mór agus An Práta Pláta na bparóistí, agus An Spud-off Mór idir na scoileanna ó 1ú Iúil go 9ú Iúil agus An Craobh ar 10ú Iúil. Later dates for our Féile and competitions this year will give more time for growers to have their spuds at their best in good time. We suffered from poor growing conditions over the last two years and, as a result, a number of growers did not participate. Our first year with An Práta Pláta was a huge success, with entries closed two weeks in advance. This year, we plan to hold this competition interparish, on the same basis as An Spud-off Mór. The whole area got huge publicity from the filming of An Féile by Rachel Allen (RTE/Good Food Channel/BBC Worldwide) and by Simon Reeve (BBC2). About 50m viewers watched these programmes. Should be good for tourism in the area. So what do we do to beat that in 2016. A good start would be to have as many growers and schools, and spud cooks as possible on board. And then we will see what happens. Mar sin, má tá sé ar intinn agat cúpla práta a chur, tá sé in am ullmhú – an cré a thochailt agus feamainn nó aoileach eile a scaipeadh thart. Agus beidh na prátaí go h-iontach agat agus tú ag súil le Laoch an Phráta. Comh maith leis sin, ná dein dearmadh ar an míos álainn go bfhuil tú mórálach as leis na bliannta. Sure go on, have a go!! - Coiste Féile an Phráta.

Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Louis Murchan

Clampdown On Illegal Puppy Trade Continues: The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr Simon Coveney, TD, commented on the seizure recently by Custom Officials, assisted by Department of Agriculture staff of a consignment of 18 pups who were in the process of being illegally exported to the U.K. through Dublin Port. This is a deplorable act, which must be stamped out. The animals involved were being transported in an unapproved vehicle with very poor ventilation and had no accompanying paper work. Department of Agriculture officials and customs officers had been engaged in joint operation in recent times at ports with a view to stamping out this illegal trade. In his statement, the Minister also thanked the DSPCA for their assistance in taking care of the seized animals. European Union rules regulating movement of dogs and pups must be adhered to in all circumstances. Pups and dogs exiting the country must be accompanied by a pet passport to show that they are identified by a microchip and are immunised against rabies. Dogs being moved out of the country for sale or change of ownership must be accompanied by an official health certificate showing that they come from a holding or business registered with the Department and that these holdings are not subject to any movement ban on animal health grounds. Registered export premises must undertake to have the dogs regularly examined by their veterinary practitioner and must ensure that animal welfare requirements are met. The dogs must also undergo a clinical veterinary examination within 48 hours of departure, to confirm that they show no signs of diseases and are fit to be transported for the intended journey. The vehicle being used for the transport must be approved by the Department and in be in compliance with Regulation (EU) No. 1/2005. Movement of all dogs between Member States is governed by EU Regulation which came into effect on 29 December 2014 and is implemented in Ireland under the Pet Passport Regulation 2014. Fodder Aid Scheme, 2016 The 2016 Fodder Aid Scheme is being implemented in response to the long term damage to fodder supplies arising from the period of protracted flooding in December, 2015 and January, 2016. The scheme aims to compensate farmers for the direct replacement cost in instances where genuine damage to silage, hay, concentrates or straw has been caused by the flooding in December 2015 / January 2016. 1. Financial aid will only be paid in instances where genuine damage to silage, hay, concentrates or straw was caused by the flooding in December 2015 / January 2016. The scheme compensates for the direct replacement cost of replacing such damaged silage, hay, concentrates or straw. 2. Applications must be submitted by Jan 22nd 2016. 3. All applications will be subject to an on-farm verification and the damaged fodder must be evident at the time of inspection in order for an applicant to be eligible for aid under this scheme. 4. Aid will not be payable where flood damage to fodder is covered by the farmers insurance policy. 5. In the event of eligible applications in excess of the total budget available for the Scheme being received, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will implement reduced payments as appropriate. 6. All payments will be subject to the EU rules regarding “de Minimis” aid.

The standard replacement costs of damaged feedstuffs, as determined by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine are eligible for payment under the scheme. Payments will be made after eligible applications have been processed and losses confirmed by field visits. The scheme deals only with losses to existing feedstuffs incurred in the recent floods. Severe Rainfall Causing Problems This past month has seen some of the worst flooding in recent times with farmland throughout the Finn valley being affected. There is going to be long term effects of this on the flooded farmland with the weight of the water causing severe compaction on some fields but his will not be known until stock starts returning to grass next spring. There are more immediate problems for farmers that need to be addressed. Any farmer who is out wintering cattle or sheep this year who has land susceptible to flooding needs to keep a close eye on the rainfall forecast. The flood levels are higher this year than has been seen in years so don’t take any chances and move animals as far away from the river as possible, there is no excuse to have stock in a field that could flood there has been plenty of warnings and red alerts giving for rainfall. Keep them on high ground. The department have announced exceptions to the animal movement rules for farmers affected by flooding. They state in general if your whole farm is affected by flooding and you are unable to move cattle to higher ground on your holding then take the following steps • Get a compliance cert before movement from your local DVO or print yourself. If this isn’t possible move the animals and then notify the department. • The rules for herds down with TB are the same but it is vitally important to contact the department as soon as possible on these herds. • If slurry tanks are flooded then water can be taking out and spread on the driest part of the farm. The pipe should be put at the top of the tank so as little solids as possible are taking out. • If the flooding of the tank comes above the level of the centre feed passage then the cattle need to be moved to another shed/higher ground. In general what the department are saying is that the rules to animal movements and slurry spreading still apply but exceptions can be made where the welfare of the animals are in jeopardy. I would ask all farmers in flooded regions to remember farm safety and to not enter floods on your own or without at least telling someone ware you are going. €18M Funding Programme For Fishery Harbours And Storm Damage Repairs: Details of an €18m Capital Investment Package in 2016 for the development of Ireland’s fishery harbour network, have emerged, under the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Capital Programme. An additional €2m will be available for a Local Authority Harbour Programme. Dingle itself will also benefit to the tune of approximately €1 million. The 2016 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Capital Programme outlined by the Minister also contains funding of €2m to assist coastal Local Authorities repair, maintain and develop piers, harbours and slipways under their ownership. Continued support for smaller rural fishing ports and piers must continue. A number of smaller fishing piers around the coast experienced some damage during the recent storms and are currently being assessed to see how best to assist Local Authorities in carrying out repairs.

7. No aid will be payable in respect of applications where the total claim is less than €100.

Capital Dredging Navigation Channel – Dumping at sea

9. Application of the T & C are at the discretion of DAFM. Farmers engaged in the rearing of cattle, sheep or horses and whose feed supplies were damaged by the recent floods are eligible to apply for support under this scheme. Eligible feedstuffs are silage, hay, straw and concentrates. Losses to other sources of feed on the holding such as root crops for grazing or in storage do not qualify for support under this scheme.` Only actual flood damaged feedstuff that is not utilisable as feed should be notified on your application. For example, in the case of stacked bales it is important to assess if flood damage is confined to lower or bottom rows. Similarly in the case of concentrates, assess the extent of damage to bags or bulk feed and list only the portion that is damaged and unfit to feed. In all cases the damaged feed or fodder should be retained on site for confirmation by the Department of

Computer Matters Joan Maguire An elephant in the download When an elephant walks across the desert it is most unlikely that he notices the tiny small insects in the sand, this is not surprising because their eyes and ears are so far away from the ground. Such is the way at times with the EU. The VAT laws which came in to effect on January 1st 2015 have caused an issue for small businesses and people who sell products such as music, ebooks and PDF downloads through the Internet. The change in the law was introduced to close a tax loophole that enabled multinational web giants like Amazon, Google and Apple to charge lower rates of sales tax by basing operations in European countries such as Luxembourg, where rates are among the lowest in the European Union. In the drafting of the plan for this legislation the knock on effect on artists, musicians and content producers appears not to have been considered. Under this EU law all people who sell digital downloads -- no matter how small the amount they are selling -- directly to customers in another EU state have to register for VAT in that country and pay VAT on every single transaction. In Ireland any business that has a turnover less than €37,500 does not need to register for VAT. To prove that this is being carried out correctly the business or artist must also collect information about the buyer that identifies what country they are in and confirms that the correct rate of VAT is paid. At present the VAT rates vary from one country to another. This has created a dilemma for people who are selling their creative work online, this does not apply to cd's or books only to digital downloads. Just to make it a bit clearer, If someone in Barcelona purchases a music download from a site selling music based in Dingle then the company in Dingle must charge the customer Spanish VAT. They company in Dingle is also required to obtain and keep two pieces of information that prove where the consumer lives and that the correct rate of VAT has been charged. To assist in this process musicians, artists and writers selling downloads directly through their website a 'Mini One Stop Shop' known as VAT MOSS has been created, which will forward VAT payments to the relevant member state or tax jurisdiction. This can be done through ROS or the Revenue Online System. The onus remains on the supplier to collect information on the buyer, their location and VAT rate of the country from which they order. Companies such as Taxamo in Kilorglin provide a service whereby they will handle the EU VAT compliance issue, while this will work for businesses, it will not be an effective solution for local musicians and artists. This has been in place for a year and will hopefully be changed, but at present it still stands.

Tuesday, January 28.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Very cold this morning with plenty of hail and rain.

By Ted Creedon Thursday, January 16, 1986. Dutch police and security forces arrested two IRA men in Amsterdam. They had escaped from the Maze prison in September 1983 along with 36 other IRA prisoners.

Monday, January 20. Britain and France announced plans today to build a tunnel under the English Channel. Ferry companies strongly oppose the plans. America held the first Martin Luther King holiday today in memory of the civil rights activist who was murdered in 1968. Attended a meeting of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society (KAHS) in Tralee Library this afternoon. Proposed to the society the presentation of an annual Kerry Heritage Award in recognition of any individual’s or group’s contribution to heritage in the county. The proposal was agreed. The society plans to visit Paris in April for four or five days at a cost of £350 per person.

Tuesday, January 21. Decided not to attend a meeting of the St Brendan Festival committee tonight because of work commitments. One disturbing aspect of this year’s festival plans is the announcement that it will be held in mid-June. This will mean that the World Currach Championships in Dingle will clash with the Maharees regatta. This would be disastrous for currach racing and would cause much resentment. It looks like Dingle can’t change its dates because the event is tide dependent while Maharees is not so dependent. I rang Bob Herbst of the Maharees bcommittee and told him of my concerns, especially that it would be unfair to put the competing crews in such a position of choice.

A tragic day for the American Space programme. The shuttle Challenger blew up shortly after take-off from Cape Canaveral. All seven astronauts, including two women, were killed. It was very sad to see the crew eating a meal on TV and then to watch their craft diving in flames. One of the women on board was a school teacher named Christa McCauliffe, picked from 11,000 applicants . Her father has Irish roots. Her parents, her husband and children and her students watched in horrified disbelief as she and her crewmates were obliterated. As the shuttle exploded and bits were scattered across the sky the TV commentator delivered the understatement of the year, “Obviously a major malfunction”. Snow falling tonight.

Wednesday, January 29. It was Budget day today and all the usual price hikes were imposed on drink, tobacco and petrol - the second petrol increase in recent weeks. Plenty of snow around this morning but the roads weren’t too bad. There was a raging snowball battle going on in Dingle at lunchtime between rival groups of schoolboys.

Thursday, January 30. We had a viciously cold wind blowing from the north all day. Most of the snow is gone but still on the hills and mountains.

Friday, January 31. The last day of January and, at long last, our phone was connected today. It’s like a new toy with the family ringing me at work this afternoon. When I got home the phone even looked like a toy - so small. It has a digital dial and can be moved to different connection points around the house. Met Dr. Finbar Ó Sé who is a member of the Oidhreacht committee. He said that Oidhreacht has formed a sub-committee to develop the old Technical School as a heritage centre and he invited me to join the new committee.

EMPLOYMENT VACANCIES IN THE OPW

Wednesday, January 22. At long last the Post and Telegraph people arrived to install a phone in our house. We should have it in before the month is out. The cost of installation will be £180.

Thursday, January 23. More political shocks for Charlie Haughey today as Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West, Bobby Molloy, decided to resign from the party to join Dessie O’Malley’s new party, the Progressive Democrats. That makes four TDs from the FF party - O’Malley, Harney, Wise and Molloy who have gone in recent weeks. Went to the first class of a new drama course in the CBS tonight which is being run by Seán Ó Murchú. We began to read a play, ‘Translations’ by Brian Friel. An interesting experience. It’s planned to stage the play in 10 weeks. Not sure if I’ll go again.

Saturday, January 25. Called to Brian Stack, the jeweller, and discussed the idea of a crafted silver piece for the Kerry Heritage Award. The Americans have set up a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and among the first inductees this week were Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and the Everly Brothers.

Monday, January 27. A bit groggy this morning after being up late watching the Superbowl live from New Orleans between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots. The game was ruined by the TV commercials which are shown every few minutes. Anyway, the Bears mauled the Patriots. The game is just beginning to catch on over here but I doubt that it will ever be widely played. Con O’Connell of Cork/Kerry Tourism contacted me to ask for help preparing a new tourist map for the peninsula.

How To Make A Balls Of Things: GAA Style Tadgh Evans Everyone makes a balls of things from time to time. We scold those who do so, in the hope that they’ll learn. It’s rare enough that a ‘calling out’ is served without some element of sympathy for the recipient – to err is human, after all. Every now and then, however, you come across ignorance so gross that the patience of a saint would be shattered. It can involve repetition of those mistakes, refusal to listen, squandering of potential, or even all of the above. But as bad and all as that might be, some go above and beyond even those levels of negligence. Imagine someone making a balls of things on purpose – that’s the GAA. For two years, the weakest teams in Ireland have been bellowing for a meaningful second tier championship. Those yells were met by eighteen proposals, all assembled with the supposed aim of improving the championship experience in mind – and in fairness, most of the ideas would have done just that, had they been implemented. Trust the GAA to pick one of the duds. All eighteen proposals were flawed, but these things generally are – you cannot devise the perfect plan. But what you ought to do is make an earnest effort to choose the idea with the lowest number of potential drawbacks. Proposal number ten from the original clump of eighteen was that very plan. It should come as no surprise that the three-year-old suggestion was constructed in the mind of the mightiest of GAA presidents, Seán Kelly. Never one to be swayed by his emotions, Kelly preferred instead to side with logic. You could almost scrape his typical brand of pragmatism off proposal ten: •

Retention of the provincial championships: check.

Streamlining of a bloated, almost obese football season: check.

A chance for everyone to land Sam each year, however notional: check.

A second tier championship with the meaningful carrot of promotion dangling over participants: check.

Number ten had it all. Therefore, naturally, it was doomed from the moment it left port. It was too ambitious, too brave, and far too bloody logical. To phrase it differently, it just wasn’t ‘GAA’ enough. Proposal number one was far more ‘Rose of Tralee’ than ‘Miss World’, but the GAA has always had a thing for the ‘lovely’ girls – however boring they may seem to the rest of us. She seduced them all with her promise of sending all Division Four teams to the scrapheap of a proposed ‘B Champion18 West Kerry Live

ship’ if beaten before their provincial final – not necessarily a bad thing, as most skips have a few treats buried somewhere, if you’re desperate enough to rummage. But not the ‘B Championship’. The winners won’t re-join the race for Sam Maguire further down the road – but they will be guaranteed participation in next year’s qualifiers, even if they’re still a Division Four team. How very generous. They might get a cup too, if central council have enough money left over after flinging funds at the Dublin county board. So all very underwhelming – perfect. You’ll have to step aside, proposal ten. In 2014, a rugby match was watched from more sofas than the All-Ireland football final. This had never happened before, yet funnily happened again in 2015. 2013 was another year of unwanted firsts for the football championship, as its more streamlined hurling counterpart lured in more gate receipts. That

newly formed gap was stretched further in 2014. But as the GAA’s motto goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, we won’t fix it – and if it is broke, we won’t fix it anyway. ’ Sitting with a friend of mine from Longford in Smokey’s café on campus at NUIG, I warily deliver these statistics to him, landing them strategically between his sips of tea. But I needn’t have worried about him spitting his drink out – he’s far from thrown: ‘Sure that’s no surprise. I’d have no intention of going to Croke Park to watch us getting scalded by Dublin. I’d stay at home, and I might watch it on telly’. Up to two years ago, this guy was fixated by football. Now he’s saying he ‘might’ watch his county on the telly against the best team in the country. That ‘might’ is one of thousands – but they’re still not enough to worry the GAA.

dates, the chances are we will be occupying the new house at Doonsheane, as well as the houses in Cois Chnoic, which means giving up the rented accommodation at Lisdorgan and Beenbawn soon … The houses in Cois Chnoic have been painted in the inside and the heating should be up and running next week.

Christoph Jensen The twelve days of Christmas have a special flavour in our lives. Each of the days allows a kind of prophetic glimpse for the twelve months of the forthcoming year, starting with December 25th for January, 26th for February etc. The foreboding we can tell by observing our dreams, the weather on the various days or meetings we have, culminating on January 6th when the three wise men appear bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh – the wise men also referred to as astrologers or kings. On the occasion of their special day on January 6th we celebrated them with a short pageant in front of some guests.

On January 3rd Betsie returned from her shorter than expected sabbatical. It is good to have her back in our midst. This week Thursday January 21st will be a momentous day: Luke Graham will be starting his transition programme at Camphill Community Dingle. Luke in many ways has a lot to do with Camphill finding its way to Dingle, as he grew up here. Mags his mother was looking for a place for Luke’s schooling and came across Camphill Ballytobin. The new house was designed with having Luke and his special needs in mind. Now after so many years and his schooling completed, Luke will be returning to his hometown. Two of his helpers from Camphill Kyle will accompany him. Welcome Luke!

Our gatherings are always well attended and we have a core group of about 30 people. The folk club is open to everyone and provides a friendly, welcoming space to share music and songs. We are a travelling folk club and over the past year we have been to pubs, cafes and houses all over the peninsula. Moving around keeps it interesting and we always have new faces wherever we go. Our next gathering will be in Kennedys Bar in Dingle on 3rd February.

Back West……………… I scáth a chéile a mhairimíd. Carl O’ Flaherty It must be one of the most sought out regions in Ireland. There is an air of expectancy after one crosses Milltown Bridge and follows the sign for Slea Head. It has always been so. People have clung to this enchanted region at the western tip of Corca Dhuibhne since pre-Christian times. Promontory forts, raths, cashels, ogham stones, invasions, colonizations, beehive huts, saints, scholars and scoundrels have trod the highways, byways and cul-de-sacs of this mountainous, boggy terrain imprisoned by expansive cliffs and thunderous waves. It offers a unique maelstrom of sacred locations, folk stories, legends and heroes from prehistory to modern times. Early Christian sites abound and are still venerated. There is no shortage of saints associated with the area. St. Gobnait's Day is celebrated on 11th of February with mass in Dún Chaoin followed by rounds at the tobar beannaithe. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta (Celtic Scholar and founder of Díseart )still attends the tobar at Ballymore on St Michaels Day. Crowds assemble at dawn on Easter Sunday at Teampall Manachaín (Ballymoreagh) likewise, Lá Naomh Caitlín on the 25th of November at Ventry. Naomh Erc, Naomh Fionntáin (Kilfountain), Naomh Faolán (Killelane), Naomh Colman (Ventry) Naomh Eoin (Mahrin) and the cunning Naomh Cuan who tricked the serpent from the lake in Coraílí, still have their devout followers. Any devotee who follows all the local patterns, rounds and saint days for seven unbroken years should be rewarded with a place in heaven next to Saint Patrick or a cardinal's red hat. The shadow of Saint Brendan is a constant presence and many pilgrims travel the saint's path to the summit especially on the saint's feast day, on the 16th of May. One feels a spiritual presence at the summit oratory where the views are spectacular on a clear day. I was among the large crowd assembled at Cuas a Bhodaigh (Brandon Creek) when British explorer, Tim Severin set off in 1976 to retrace the journey of Saint Brendan the Navigator to America. In more recent times local maritime explorer Domhnall Mac Síthigh gives a wonderful account in the Gaelic language about his voyage which retraces Brendan's journey from Dingle to Iceland in the beautifully descriptive book “Iomramh Bhréanainn ón nDaingean go hIóslann”. Moving swiftly along one can only gaze in wonder at the tour buses, cars, camper vans and cyclists heading west during the summer months. The Slea Head circuit is their usual destination. The views are spectacular and glorious, however, I tend to avoid these roads during the tourist season. Yes, tourism is the marrow which supports the peninsula but give me Clogher Strand during a winter's storm with crashing waves, wild seas and not a clicking camera within a scread asal. In my younger years, I oft times rented bicycles out to tourists at Foxy John’s bar and general stores. I knew the drill like '' The Our Father’’………… follow the road by the sea to Milltown Bridge keep left until Ventry and take a break at Paud Quinn’s bar, continue your journey to Dunquin, pause and take your time at the grotto and head to Kruger Kavanagh's, absorb the islands and the draíocht of the Fear Marbh, head to Ballyferriter and amble home at your leisure……’’. Jeepers I sent every kind of critter on their way, big, small, old and tall’’… You’ll be home in no time at all …….. just take your dead ease…….”. Remarkably, I never had any complaints and more remarkable was the fact that I have never cycled the journey myself! It’s still on my to do list. This is a part of the peninsula where I never tire of rambling. There are so many gems to be discovered; Gleann Fán, Com a Lochaig, Ferriter’s Castle, Fothair na Manach, Smerwick, The Three Sisters (Binn Diarmada, Binn Meanach, Binn Anraoi) , Tower Baile Dháith, Mount Eagle Lake, Más an Tiompán, An Tráigh Bán ( Great Blasket ), Reask, Béal Bán to Dún an Óir …… the list goes on and on, Esk Tower at Burnham (just an eighteen minute walk from the road side hut to the tower at the summit. Here social history unfolds at a glance. A promontory fort lies precariously clinging to the cliff edge where our ancestors dwelled many thousands of years ago. The defensive ridges are still discernible. We explored them as young lads without fear or care. I now shudder at its dangerous location and wouldn't allow an assault team on the site without safety ropes, a helicopter and a back up team. This small 24 West Kerry Live

peninsula was the last stronghold of The Vikings in Ireland (Smiths History of Kerry p181). The eerie strains of the blind harpist from Harperstown can still be heard during Scarabhín na gCuach in lonely Baile Mhic an Daill. Modern structures on the summit include a famine relief tower, a lookout post during World War 2 and the plinth of the Marian Cross. It was erected in 1954 but it tumbled from grace during a winter storm the following year. What makes the countryside so distinctive is its people and the continued usage of the Gaelic language. Peig Sayers, Tomás Criomhthain, Muiris Ó Suilleabháin, An Seabhac……. what an impressive list of authors and still the list grows, Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé, Pádraig Ó Fiannachta, Dónal Mac Síthigh. Cast an eye in the Cnuasach Duibhneach section of the Dingle library and add at least another fifty authors to the list. Ballyferriter natives Micí na gCloch and Pádraig Feiritéar have slipped under the radar but both have furnished me with hours of cultural and historical gems. The Seabhac referred to 'Micí' as the greatest exponent of the Gaelic storyteller in Corca Dhuibhne ……. He survived the famine, emigrated to America, returned to Dingle, became the town's bellman, allegedly the last souper and was a larger than life character before departing this life in 1908 in the Dingle workhouse. Pádraig Feiritear's contribution is no less spectacular. Imprisoned with hard labour on three occasions for defying the authorities, he led the land league struggle in the 1890s. He was eventually forced to close down his little shop in Main Street, Dingle before emigrating to America. Here, he embarked on a selfless mission of collecting Irish folklore before his untimely death in 1924. His vast treasure trove is stored in the Dept of Irish Folklore at U.C.D, together with the collection of An Seabhac and Seán Ó Dubhda. Much of Micí na gCloch's saothar is housed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. This huge cnuasach is now the preserve of academics and beyond the reach of the ordinary Pobal Gaeltacht. Why not digitalise this invaluable tobar and relocate it to its natural home in Corca Dhuibhne, perhaps at Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir in Dunquin or the new pristine language centre in Ballyferriter, Dingle library or Dísirt under the watchful eye of Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Unfortunately, the Irish language is under constant threat in all the Gaeltacht regions as indeed are most minority languages worldwide. The unlimited availability of English language programmes on television, skype calling, texting messaging, and internet is impacting greatly. Furthermore, endemic emigration of the youth means more native Gaelic speakers now reside in the far off reaches of America, Canada, England, New Zealand and Australia than in the home-sod. Unless our national social policies are drastically revamped, life in rural Ireland and especially in the Gaeltacht regions will be unsustainable. In my youth there was a good smattering of Irish spoken in the small shops in Dingle. Furthermore, many Gaeltacht people had moved into the town as indeed they still do. I often worked behind the counter during fairdays or Christmas time at my uncle's general store (Foxy John's). The Parish a’Moore bus was full to capacity as they alighted outside Dillon's Shop (next to Atkins). The bar filled up and not a word of the Queen's English was spoken for the day. My father, Paguine had a genuine grá, ní hamháin don cheol agus an chaid ach don teanga dúchas chómh maith. Consequently, a sizeable contingent from back west were valued customers at the bar. The legacy lived on after my father's passing. The Carneys (Seán Sheáin) and his cousin, Seán, who worked as a firestoker in Dingle hospital, and Jimmy de Hóra held court in the snug for many years. They reminisced about their youth and their friends and the social life on The Blaskets, maicréal, coininí, nósanna agus rudaí eile nách iad……. Jed Bowler……. Aloysius Kavanagh……. The list goes on…….Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé…………. gentlemen all and so passionate about their heritage and culture. I remember the first live programme recorded by Radio na Gaeltachta in Corca Dhuibhne which was held in O'Flaherty’s bar. Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé was appointed Fear a’ Tí. At last the evening came and the tigh was lán go doras with ceolteoirí and sean-nós singers. Coming close to count down there was panic as Maidhc had failed to show up. Did his creamery lorry break down near Gleann na nGealt or was he kidnapped by an lucht sí? No one knew but there was an air of desperation. Suddenly the front door opened and Maidhc Dainín appeared. Absolute relief…….everyone looked in his direction……. Maidhc smiled and retorted…….Ta brón orm a ladanna……. Ach bhí mo bhó ag breith. In later years the townies in the snug would try and rattle his cage but

www.westkerrylive.ie

Ventry lads Maidhc never dithered. He oft times reminded us of his escapades in Dingle when as a child he stayed with his relations in Ashmount Terrace. “Bhí leath coróin i mo phóca and they brought me by the short cut through the Green to the Quayside. M’baist, t’wasn’t long before I got tripped up and myself and my leath-coróin departed company .M’baist, I’ve a lot to be thankful to you lads, sure didn’t ye harden me up for the real world in Chicago.” Close relation Colm lets out a bewildered sigh “……. That’s more of it…… just like all the yarns in your books …..you never seem to let the truth come in the way of a good story…..”Nílim ag insint éithigh………ar mo leabhar breac……”, Maidhc replies. ”Here now boy, yourself and your “Lauer Brack” should be thrown down the strand………” Paidí Mhárthain Mac Gearailt enters the snug. He wears a roguish smile and picks up the conversation in a flash “……..in ainm Dé a ladanna, lig don bhfear bocht sin ………….fear cóir macanta……”Everyone laughs. The Gaeltacht boys win the day. Next week t’will start all over again. The snug was often a twilight zone of diverse conversations in both languages………the townies could follow the dialogue but invariably spoke in English. Then Nuacht an Deiscirt is just commencing on R.N.G. Everyone listens attentively, including the townies, not a word is lost. I still tune into Nead na Fuiseoga each morning at seven a.m, Nuacht an Deiscirt and the sports programmes. It keeps me in touch with home and I truly value its worth. I catch Togha agus Rogha on most Saturdays with host Pádraig Ó Sé. I’m hopeless at remembering phone numbers, not even my own family members. However, there is always an exception. I can remember the number of this request show, it comes to me in a flash but only if I say the words in Irish ……cuirigí glaoch ar an mbeirt Áine ag an uimhir.......a náid, a sé, a sé ,a naoi ,a haon, a chúig, a chúig, a haon, a haon, a cheathar. I'm a regular entrant in the túsanna agus duaiseanna competitions with such exotic prizes as dearbhán feola, luach fiche euro, agus dlúth dioscanna ceoil. My name has yet to come slán from the hat. R.N.G. go deo, gach rath ar an bhfoireann go leír. Although I’ve a reasonable grasp of the language I’ve never fully mastered it. This is my own fault, I never made that final effort. I'm blissfully incompetent in both languages. Gan Gaelainn, Gan Béarla. Tá sórt náire orm ach níl aon leigheas agam air. My father spoke Irish with a passion. When I was a young child about seven years old myself and my brother presented ourselves in school for the deich bpúnt oral Irish examination. The inspector asked our names, past times etc. Easy street! The money was in the bag. Finally, he showed us a couple of pictures with animals and asked us their names. He showed Fergus a mouse. “Anois, abair liom cad é sin?” “Sin luch” arsa Fergus. He showed me a rat. I knew the Irish for it but got too excited. “Sin Ratty” arsa mise. I think that finished my career as a linguist and the Deich bPúnt went down the Swannie! Fortunately, the Gaelainn is still spoken widespread back west but that dreaded word globalization is threatening communities, languages and customs worldwide. During my youth I attended far too many Ceilís in Muiríoch. The hall floor was pounding with Lá Breás (Irish language students) and we were in for the kill. Brendan Begley stood sentry, like St. Peter at the gates of heaven ag an doras while his family, brilliant musicians all, or Paud Coughlan rattled out the music. I passed this location recently and couldn’t believe how compact it was. I must have been a chancer ceart because I never had much luck with the cailiní. I was a horrific

dancer and never mastered the set or seana-waltz. I could just about keep up with “Baint an Fhéar” where five lads lined up opposite five girls and clapped and whacked the floor boards with their feet before disappearing under “An Droichead”. Now the problem was how to get home. On many occasions we headed back to Dingle on shank's mare. We shared jokes, pushed each other into ditches, sang songs and bawled our heads off until the lights of the town came into view. Occasionally, it was often breacadh an lae when I reached home. I still recall the time when I treated myself to a big fry up of Patty Atty’s sausages and black pudding after the walk. I then grabbed my coat and boarded the eight o clock bus to Cork outside Moran’s garage for the Munster final. Oscar Wilde springs to mind “Youth is wasted on the young.” Still they were fantastic times. There was an air of innocence about our shenanigans. Tempus fugit. The years have galloped by. I attended the first ‘Sean Nós’ competition i dtigh Krugers idir an dá Nollaig breis agus fiche bhian ó shin. I visited Cuas a Bhodaigh (the vagrants or tramps inlet) last New Year's Day with my daughter. It's one of my favourite destinations. Unfortunately, a gust of wind swept her hat into the enraged sea. I immediately thought of the men in their naomhóga, navigating this wild and treacherous chasm. This place was a hive of activity in former times. During World War II almost sixty naomhóga were working out of this tiny inlet. Each naomhóg contained three men. Another compliment of men and women were engaged in gutting and salting the mackerel in a purpose built shed. The produce was then brought by horse and cart to the fish mongers in Dingle. The whole community worked their socks off to reap the bounty of the sea. Today the little quay is almost deserted with only the remnants of broken platforms and the odd pleasure craft. The name 'Cuas-a-Bhodaigh' has always enchanted me. There are many explanations as to its meaning, each of dubious merit. The direct translation is the scallywags or churls inlet but everyone knows that there are no such scallywags in this parish. A tale from local 'seanachas' relates a sceál about a 'cú-bodaigh' (a crossbreed of sheepdog and hound extraction) who pursues a hare across the nearby stream. Interestingly enough such crossbreed animals were still known as 'a buddy' in my youth. However, don't disregard the greatest 'Bodach' of them all, the scoundrel with the long greycoat or Bodach an chóta lachna. He could change his appearance or use a disguise. Seemingly, he still visits the 'Cuas' so beware of any untoward or devious characters! After exiting Cuas reward yourself by driving to nearby 'Baile na hAbha' ramble to Fothar na Manach or choose the mountain track. Either way surrender to this peaceful haven and find sanctuary from worries and woes. T'was in this noble ríocht or shangri-la that the Sam Maguire Cup hibernated i dteannta Darragh Ó Cinnéide in 2004. I generally pay a visit to Tigh Breathnach, ná deán nós's ná bris nós. It was mid afternoon and only one customer stood at the bar counter. We exchanged greetings and I enjoyed his company. We hadn't met previously. He was in his seventies and informed me that he still had sheep on the hill. Suddenly, a flash of recognition and inspiration came into my mind. 'An tusa an fear a bhí caillte agus a thaínig thar nais ó leaba an bháis?', I asked. He laughed and was amazed at my perception. 'I gcúntais Dé, cár chuala tú an scéal sin a gharsúin', He enquired. 'Oh I heard you speaking to Helen Ní Shé on An Saol ó Dheas', I replied, before he regaled me with his story. His name is Séamus Kennedy (Baile Dháith). He was herding sheep when one of his animals brushed past him and its horn made a slight gash on his leg. He continued with his work. The following day he noticed a small swelling but dismissed it from his mind. His daughter insisted that he see the doctor in Dingle. When the swelling hadn't abated he was referred to Tralee Hospital. From there he was rushed to C.U.H (Cork University Hospital) with suspected blood infection or septicaemia. He remembered being placed in the ambulance, then lights out. In laymans language he lost consciousness and slipped into a coma. Chaith sé breis agus dhá mhí gan aithne gan urlabhra. After more than two months in a coma, neurologists from Cork and Dublin were despairing. His chances of recovery were deemed slim ach ní Dia a duírt é. A family conference was in progress re accepting his passing when gan coinne he opened his yes and smiled. His recovery has been nothing short of a Divine Miracle. He's back on the mountain with his sheep and dog. Bail ó Dhia air!

While in Ventry linger at Paud Quinn's Bar and enjoy the majestic views. This area is steeped in history. The Giants Bed (megalithic wedge grave) is at your back. As children we heard about 'The Battle of West Kerry Live 25 www.westkerrylive.ie

Ventry' where Daire Donn the king of the world and Fionn macCumhaill did battle for a year and a day. Fionn had been up to his old tricks, eloping with another king's wife and Daire Donn sought revenge. It crossed my mind that if Fionn had observed the Tenth Commandment 'Ná déan Drúis' ( Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours wife) he could have saved a lot of bother and thousands of lives. Quinns is located near the site of the specially built Protestant Colony, the houses still remain, built under the supervision of the Rev. Charles Gayer in the 1830's.......Stories of soup kitchens, soupers, bible classes, abysmal famine conditions and hullabaloo will keep for another day. Its impossible to leave Ventry without mention of its past heroes. The name Ventry is synonymous with Gaelic football legend Paidí Ó Sé. Football fans from 'na ceithre hárda' of Ireland come to pay homage to one of the greatest players ever to wear the 'Green and Gold'. A statue is erected in his memory outside the bar at Árd a Bhóthair which evokes both happy and sad memories. He said farewell to this life much too soon. We soldiered together at boarding school in Saint Brendan's, Killarney. Although he was a larger than life character he never ever forgot his boyhood roots and always had time for a chat. Take a brief ramble from the bar to Ventry beach and enjoy a breathtaking walk to Cuan pier before returning to O'Shea's for a tasty chowder. As a teenager I clearly recall Tom-a-Kaiser Kavanagh coming into the bar in Bridge Street. He was like an iconic figure from a bygone Celtic era. By trade he was a stone mason and he claimed to have got this gift from 'An Gobán Saor' (the legendary stone builder from Irish folklore). A quiet and humble man by nature, he sprung into life when holding court at the bar-counter. Tourists clicked their cameras at this man with a hundred faces and guises while he pontificated on the vagaries of life. He was a throwback to hedge-school times and could articulate ideas and Gaelic phraseology with wild abandon. Paguine's bar was always part of his itinerary. He came to town on race days or regattas with an American suit and a wild coloured shirt. I remember a horrendous winter's day when a number of 'Lá Breás' were nursing a couple of mediums (half pint of Guinness) by the fireside. The door flies open and Tom announces his arrival “Tá deireadh an domhain tagtha, raghad isteach sa chistin agus beidh braonín súp agam.” was his salutation. One of the Gaelic students enquired if he could speak 'Gaeilge'. Tom was delighted and within a flash responded “Tá Gaelainn, Beárla agus Laidean agam ón gcliabhán.”(I speak Irish, English and Latin from the cradle.) He was a generous old sort and immediately ordered a round for himself and the students. When 'The Kaiser' searched his pockets for funds he soon realised that he was stoney broke. “Cuir é sin sa leabhar agus tabhair púnt dom a bhuachaill” He requested. I gave him the pound note and recorded the transaction in 'The book'. (This was not a problem as he was strictly honest), he turned around to the amused students and pronounced “Is trua fear croí-mhór i mbaile mhór gan airgead!”. Perhaps less known are the deeds of Denis Fenton from Ballincota who hailed from under the shadow of Mount Eagle. After emigrating to America he joined the army. He had a prodigious rifle shot and represented the U.S.A. in both the Antwerp (1920) and Paris Olympics (1924). He won five medals, three gold and two bronze and will hopefully be remembered in the locality for the hundredth anniversary in 2020. Ní fada uainn é agus ba bhreá a ghaiscaíocht a chomóradh. Escape Ventry and take the mountain pass at Árd a Bhóthair to Dún Chaoin. At the summit, stop and consider your options. Follow the track on the right to Chruach Mhártain or amble to Mount Eagle on your left. Either way you will be amply rewarded. However, a bigger decision awaits. Just ahead on the top is a breathtaking vista of Dún Chaoin. On a fine day its an extravagance which is almost impossible to behold. Any person who doesn't alight from their vehicle should automatically incur a two hundred euro fine. The best things in life are free and this is one of them. There is nothing which I can scribble about Dún Chaoin which hasn't already been written by thousands of people before me. I will leave this experience to yourself, however, I strongly recommend that you visit Ionad an Bhlascaoid and discover the area's rich heritage. You may wish to take a boat to The Great Blasket, if so you won't be disappointed. This is the home of Peig Sayers, Tomás Ó Criomhthain and Muiris Ó Súilleabhaín. I occasionally reread 'Fiche Blian ag Fás'. It's small, compact and easy to read. At the moment I'm dipping into Scéal Shéamais Bhig (Daithí de Mórdha) agus is fiú go mór é. I often wonder what it was like for the departing emigrants when they looked back for the last time at this heaven on earth. Many must have been broken hearted.......ara bhfheárr liom bheith beo bocht im sclábhaí ins an mbaile 26 West Kerry Live

atá lámh le siúd. Ballyferriter is aptly named after Pierce Ferriter. He was the last to hold out against the forces of the crown. He was also a poet and soldier and was hanged at 'Cnoc na gCaorach' in Killarney in 1653. Again, this parish is full of literary people......Pierce Ferriter, Micí na gCloch, Nell na gCloch, Pádraig Feiritéar, Ger Ó Ciobháin, Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh, Micheál Ó Mainín, Seán Ó Luíng, the MacSithighs..... “There must be something which activates the brain cells in this parish, salty mackeral perhaps! Fíor uisce! N'fheadar. A walk on Béal Bán beach is a must. Continue to Dún an Óir where the Spaniards were massacred by Lord Grey's army in 1580. This place has an eerie effect on me. Our house in Dublin is called Dún an Óir and our gate code is, well you've guessed it, fifteen eighty. The Three Sisters (Binn Diarmada, Binn Méanach, Binn Anraoí) are a formidable defence against the Atlantic Ocean. I experienced Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' there during the summer on my annual visit; hail, rain, wind and sunshine. It was absolutely exhilarating. Smerwick Harbour named by The Danes and meaning butter harbour is resplendent in the sun. I prefer the Gaelic name 'Cuan Árd na Caithne'. The Caithne is the arbutus, a shrub with strawberry-like berries which is native to this area, however, despite my searches I've yet to discover one growing here. I have two such bushes in my own garden in honour of this heavenly place. They don't like the frost but they are thriving in a secluded nook. Perhaps a more accurate meaning of Árd na Caithne is that its called after a local person viz Connie's Height, take your pick! I haven’t mentioned Gaelic football in this kingdom of the Gael, not out of ignorance but out of respect. This I will leave to the better informed, however it is true to say that ‘An Ghaeltacht’ have backboned the best West Kerry and indeed Kerry teams during their successful era. The club had an exceptional era during the noughties. They won the county senior championship in 2001 (captained by Micí Ó Conchubhair) and 2003 (captained by Darragh Ó Sé). They contested the All-Ireland club final on Saint Patrick's Day in 2004. They overcame a very fancied St.Brigid's (Dublin) team in the semi-final. The game was played in Thurles and I can recall two main features. Firstly, it was a classic game of Gaelic football and secondly the weather was intensely cold. The final was the biggest day in the club's history. I joined the Gaeltacht supporters outside Quinn's bar in Drumcondra. We marched in great spirits behind a massive 'An Ghaeltacht' flag. I had a whistle (typical bloody teacher), blew on it furiously three times and shouted An Ghaeltacht Abú .... Ó thuaidh. After a couple of blows the whole group were in unison.... An Ghaeltacht Abú.. Ó thuaidh. In my youth Micheál Ó Sé (Árd na Caithne) and Séamus MacGearailt held the torch. They were followed by the illustrious Paidí Ó Sé……. John Long……. winning Kerry captain Darragh Ó Cinnéide, Aodhán Mac Gearailt……. Darragh, Marc and Tomás Ó Sé……. The players roll on and on agus ní fada uainn an ré nua. Thankfully there are still occasions where the people and the languages are still to the fore. Check local event calendar ‘West Kerry Live’ for events such as Béal Bán Races, Regatta Baile na nGall, Féile an Phráta, An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta, Féile na Drámaíochta i Halla na Feothanaí nó b’fhéidir seisiún cheoil sna tithe tabhairne mór-thimpeall. Buail siar chuig An Ghaeltacht agus éist leis an teanga beo.' Back West' for the craic, caid agus ceol. A people apart, I scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Pain in the neck , shoulder or hand.

Weakened grip in hand / loss of strength in the arm.

Eddie O’ Grady

Treatment : Often if neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome is caught early, deep tissue work on neck, shoulders and arm to loosen out tightened muscles; joint mobilisations / manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine; electro acupuncture along the affected nerve pathway; postural correction exercises, can usually bring great relief within one or two treatment sessions. If the condition is chronic ( i.e. there a month or months), it may take more time for the irritated nerve to settle. You may need to lose weight if obesity is the cause of your thoracic outlet syndrome.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a disorder that occurs when the blood vessels or nerves in the space between the collarbone and first rib (thoracic outlet) become compressed. This can result in any of the following symptoms ; 1. pain in your shoulders and/or neck , 2. numbness / pain / tingling down the arm and / or in a finger / fingers. Common causes of thoracic outlet syndrome include physical trauma, i.e. car crash ; repetitive injuries from job or sports related activities; anatomical defects (such as having an extra rib); poor posture( protruding neck / rounded shoulders); and pregnancy. You may notice symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome if your job requires you to do a repetitive movement continuously for long periods, i.e. typing on a computer; working on an assembly line; or lifting things above your head. These repetitive activities tend to tighten up neck and shoulder muscles. Athletes, such as baseball pitchers and swimmers can also develop thoracic outlet syndrome from the years of repetitive movements. Obesity can put an undue amount of stress on your body structures and joints leading to the development of thoracic outlet syndrome. Carrying around an oversized bag or backpack or having somebody sitting on your shoulders for long periods, say at a concert can compress nerve structures etc. and lead to the condition. You may suffer symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome during pregnancy as muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints come under strain. This is as a result of the release of the hormone relaxin around week twelve of pregnancy, and also due to the increase in bodyweight.

2. Vascular (venous or arterial) thoracic outlet syndrome : This type of thoracic outlet syndrome occurs when one or more of the veins or arteries are compressed in the area between the collarbone and first rib. Signs and symptoms include: •

Discoloration of the hand (bluish colour).

Arm pain and swelling, possibly due to blood clots.

Blood clots in veins or arteries in the upper area of your body.

• Lack of colour in one or more of your fingers or your entire hand. •

Weakened or no pulse in the affected arm.

Cold fingers, hands or arms.

Arm fatigue after activity.

Numbness or tingling in your fingers.

Throbbing lump near your collar bone.

Weakness of arm or neck.

Treatment : For vascular (venous or arterial) thoracic outlet syndrome... you need to consult with your doctor. This condition may require thrombolytic medications, anticoagulant medications or surgery.

The two most common types of thoracic outlet syndrome are: 1. Neurogenic (neurological) thoracic outlet syndrome: This form of thoracic outlet syndrome is characterized by compression of the brachial plexus ( nerves coming from the spinal cord (neck). This network of nerves controls muscle movements and sensations in the shoulder, arm and hand. This is the most common cause of thoracic outlet syndrome. Signs and symptoms include: •

Numbness or tingling in your arm or fingers.

Wasting of muscles through which the compressed nerve travels; either in the arm or fingers or both.

Detox - the Springboard to Renewed Vitality!

tamins - spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass or barleygrass powder are available in powder, tablet or capsule forms.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra Here we go again - resolving to be better, healthier and fitter than we were in 2015! It’s quite natural after a few weeks of gluttonous indulgence that we are ready to commit to a long list of well-intended resolutions. A great way to kick start your New Year and to feel cleansed and energetic is with a gentle detox plan. Detox, short for detoxification, occurs naturally in the body on a daily basis. It is an on-going process where the body neutralizes and eliminates toxins. A detox diet should support this process by reducing the toxins we ingest everyday through food and drinks and should include nutrients, antioxidants and herbal preparations that assist the organs do what they do best! High fibre foods and water should also be included as they draw out and eliminate toxins by increasing the frequency of bowel movements and urination. The body is well equipped to detoxify without having to resort to drastic fad diets which can be nutritionally deficient and harmful in the long run. The key to a great detox plan is to reduce the toxins coming in and support the body to successfully eliminate the toxins within.

Be kind to yourself during this period and treat yourself with essential oil baths, seaweed soaks, whole body massage and relaxing saunas. Aim to get outside if possible and run, skip or jump in the fresh air to get lymph moving! Most of all enjoy the tastes and textures of your food, knowing that it is truly nourishing and energising your body. The following short-term diet plan is ideal for most people who want to make a healthy start to the year. This plan should be followed for 21 days to reap the benefits. It is ideal to shed the Winter mantle and prepare for Spring, which despite how you feel, is just around the corner! 1. Cut out all forms of sugar - table sugar, sweets, confectionary and artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks and diet drinks. If you need to sweeten foods choose organic rice syrup, agave syrup or xylitol.

2. Cut out junk food, take aways, processed meals and convenient food with artificial colourings, preservatives and additives.

Tables of Eight

3. Cut out wheat and foods that are made from wheat such as bread, biscuits, cereals, crackers, pasta and pizza. Look out for wheat-free products made from wholegrains such as spelt or rye bread, buckwheat pasta, brown rice noodles, quinoa, rice or oat porridge. Choose wholegrain oatcakes and spelt or rye crackers for snacks (there is life beyond wheat!).

Ar Mhaithe Le Coiste Na nÓg, Liospóil

4. Cut out dairy foods such as milk, cream, dairy yogurts, ice cream and cheese. There are plenty dairy alternatives available but do choose whole food products such as soya milk and yogurts, oat or rice milk, tofu and dairy-free cheese.

Sunday, January 24th 6pm, O’Sullivans Bar, Garrynadur

5. Cut out caffeine and alcohol. Yannoh coffee is an excellent coffee alternative and comes in ground or filter varieties. Tea drinkers could try rooibosch (red bush tea) which is similar to black tea but loaded with antioxidants. Herbal teas that are particularly beneficial during detox are dandelion, nettle, lemon, peppermint, fennel or specially formulated detox teas. 6. Eat a high fibre breakfast such as porridge, muesli or granola, add fruit and ground flaxseeds for extra fibre and nutrients. Vary your intake of wholegrains to include millet, quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, barley or oats. 7. For protein eat 2 varieties of pulses daily such as chickpeas, aduki beans, black turtle beans, mung beans, lentils and kidney beans. Have a fish dish twice per week serve with brown basmati rice and lightly steamed green veggies. 8. Best veg are cruciferous as they support liver function and breakdown fatty substances in the body - broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, horseradish and mustard greens. Also include garlic, onions, leeks and celery in your veg list! Eat them raw or lightly steamed for best results. 9. Use spices and herbs liberally in cooking - turmeric, ginger, red clover, rosemary, burdock root, black pepper and seaweed flakes instead of table salt. 10. Drink at least 2L fluids throughout the day as filtered water, herbal teas, veg juices and diluted fresh fruit juices. 11. Choose a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement to complement your diet. Herbal preparations that are particularly beneficial include milk thistle, solidago, burdock, cleavers and dandelion root. Super greens are also a great addition and provide excellent protein and B vi30 West Kerry Live

Killorglin Tidy Towns Wildlife Team have also been very busy getting our 10 bird boxes ready for this coming spring breeding season. Nine out of the ten boxes were occupied last season so they got cleaned and sanitized with boiling water to be ready for this spring. Well done team wildlife. They are very proud of the activity in the Barn Owl boxes so again this spring they plan to make and erect more owl boxes. Last year it was so wonderful to have 3 new baby owls born in the Killorglin area as sadly such sightings have become increasingly rare in modern Ireland. The Barn Owl is categorised as a Red-listed Bird of Conservation Concern in Ireland highlighting it as a conservation priority. If you are aware of any sightings of owls in your area please contact our own bird man James Daly directly on 087 414 3028. If you see rubbish being dumped illegally please take out your phone and take a picture, this is the only way we can stop this behavior. There are on the spot fines which are followed up by the council. Also you can log onto wwwfixmyarea.ie and follow the instructions, please include a photo. We meet by the monument in the Fair Field @ 10am till noon. Come along with whatever cleaning tools you have at home. Killorglin Tidy Towns Committee and Crew had a fantastic gathering January 9th at Bunkers Bar which is always a great way to start the new year and get everybody motivated for the year ahead. Thanks again to Ger Counihan and his staff for looking after us and making our night very enjoyable with food, music and wonderful company. Saturday last January 16th a lot of work got accomplished even though the crew was not at full capacity. The Mill car park was in deplorable condition with over 4 large green bags filled from there alone. The Tralee Rd from beyond the graveyard to the bridge was also bad enough and a great litter pick was done all over town. Well done to all who came along and helped. In total 8 large bags were collected. Flower beds got there first attention to detail as some early green fingers got to work also last Saturday. Well done guys a mighty mornings work was done.

Congratulations to Noreen Ahern, Caragh Lake, who had a most beautiful poem accepted by the Kerryman last week, the title “Daisies in December”. Read it twice, maybe three times, and you get her meaning....it’s really beautiful. Page 23 of last weeks paper. As you may have heard, the annual traditional music shool in Ballyferriter has inexplicably lost all it’s funding from the Arts Council for this year. Those who have either attended the sessions and concerts during the festival, or had the privilage of being taught by renowned musicians who are handing on traditional music skills to the next generation will understand how important this annual event is. This is the future of Ireland’s musical heritage. Everyone here in the Gaeltacht understands and cherishes the country’s language, spoken or, in this case played or sung. Unfortunately, the Arts Council have failed to see how their decision could impact on the future of traditional music. There have been some fund raising efforts already which have seen generous support, but more is needed, so please come and either play, sing, or just enjoy the session. This is a free event, so donations on the evening will be very welcome. There will also be a raffle with prizes kindly given by local businesses. Dingle News.

the annual Ceol Scoil An Earraigh will be held in the Ballyferriter Area providing opportunities for musicians of all ages to improve their skills under experienced tutors.

Richie Williams I must begin by offering my sincere apologies to the former and present residents of Ashmount Terrace who were offended by my recent remarks in these notes about the vandalism of flower tubs in their area. The notes were hastily penned in a fit of temper after the tubs were upended on two separate occasions over the past month. Staying with that side of town I must again commend the impressive work which was undertaken in the FAMINE GRAVEYARD. It is now a must visit site for locals and visitors alike and I hope the plans to recreate the traditional entry route from St Elizabeths Hospital will be acceptable to the SHB authorities. A few new events here in the Dingle area are at an advanced planning stage and will complement the many established festivals and weekends which are already part of our calendar. The Storm Festival is scheduled for the first weekend in February and includes Car Treasure Hunts, Climate Change Lectures and a Talk and Walk near the Port Yarrick Wreck in the Castlegregory area. A great programme which should interest and inform locals and others of the many wonderful hidden treasures we have on the Peninsula. The following weekend the Annual DINGLE WALKING FESTIVAL offers plenty activity for people of all ages and fitness levels and surplus funds will be donated to the Dingle Coast and Cliff Rescue Service. Also

The Running and Fitness Weekend in April is another new event and will be closely followed by Feile Na Bealtaine and the Darkness Into Light Walk. Its all go it seems here in Dingle in the weeks ahead so tog pairt agus bain taithneamh as na himeachtai go leir. The 1916-2016 Commemoration Events kick off with the St Patricks Day Parade. The theme this year is centered on the 1916 Rebellion and a number of new entrants have already indicated their interest in taking part. The organisers are leaving the theme open to participants imagination and can include the changes in this country over the past 100 years. Groups or individuals will be most welcome to join in and lets make the 2016 Parade the largest and most colourful to surpass the efforts of previous years. Milltown / Castlemaine GAA Medal Presentation: Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club was very honoured to have Kerry Footballer and All Star winner Donnacha Walsh to present medals to our under age players. Henry Scanlon- Chairperson of Bord Na nÓg, welcomed Donnacha and spoke about his 100% commitment when on the field of play- a perfect role model for our young club players. Donnacha then gave a very inspiring speech to the players. He began by congratulating all the players and their respective mentors on a terrific year. He spoke of the joy of playing on a team and that being part of a winning team was even more enjoyable. Donnacha then spoke about personal achievements- in particular his All Star Award and how proud both he, his family and his club are of this wonderful achievement. He was very motivating for our younger players- advising them to continually strive for improvement.... be it developing that weak leg or perfecting your free taking... trying harder all the time. He also pointed out the enjoyment and self-satisfaction that comes with improvement. He reminded all present that there is life outside of football. Yes, you will make friends for life -but football won’t pay the bills! So it is most important to keep the focus on one’s education. Donnacha reminded us how he had studied hard to become a physiotherapist, reiterating the importance of keeping the balance between sport and education. Learning to cook was another piece of excellent advice - and being able to take pizza out of an oven will not suffice! Healthy nutritious food is essential for all people -in particular for those performing at the higher end of sport. Donnacha’s final words were for our younger footballers: You are blessed to be from Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club with the many great coaches available to you. Gura míle maith agat Donnacha agus go neirí go gheal leat an bhliain seo chugainn.

FUN FOOTBALL: continues in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. A startling report recently released by the WHO remarked about the level of inactivity among children in Ireland, how sedentary children are becoming and how Ireland’s children are going to be the most obese in Europe by 2030. Drop out from sport is huge in the teenage years due to being “bad” at sport. If children realise that they are really good at some sports or at a particular aspect of a sport then they can go ahead and pursue that- be it Basketball Athletics, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, swimming…The list is endless and it is important to remember that all sports will complement each other. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our FaceBook Page.

Roasted Cauliflower Recipes

minutes, then add the ginger. Add the carrots and cook them for a few minutes over a medium heat. Stir the corn, peas, and cauliflower “rice” into the pan, mixing the ingredients thoroughly

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Lower the heat to medium, and cook until the cauliflower is tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Turn up the heat and move the mix to the edges of the pan, add the egg and stir to mix it in to all vegetables.

Change the way we cook any vegetable and we will bring out different flavours from them. One such example is roasted cauliflower, when we brown it brings out a really nutty flavour and it pairs easily with so many different flavours such as chilli, cumin, almonds, capers, lemon and even pear (add some pear to the pan while it is roasting). One simple dish is to cut the cauliflower into small florets and fry it off on a hot pan for about 5 minutes to give it a brown colour, add a dash of sherry vinegar some almonds, a squeeze of lemon and some chopped parsley. Season this and serve as a side. Delicious! If you are looking for ideas to make your food more exciting, at Dingle Cookery School we have a ‘Dinner-Party Master Class’ on Saturday 30th at 10am.

Once it is ready add a dash of soy sauce, add in the spring onions and nuts and add coriander to the top.

Roast Cauliflower and Chorizo Soup Ingredients 2 heads Cauliflower cut into small pieces 50g Butter 600ml chicken or vegetable stock 600ml Milk 100g spicy Chorizo, diced

Whole Roasted Cauliflower

1 handful flat leaf Parsley, chopped

(Serve this whole to the table with your Sunday dinner; add seasonings of your choice such as chilli flakes or cumin)

Method

Ingredients 1 head of Cauliflower Olive Oil Zest from a lemon

Turn on the oven to 180ºC. Roast the cauliflower on a tray with olive oil for about 8 minutes (alternatively this can be done on a large pan over high heat). Once it is brown remove it from the oven. Add to a pot along with the stock and the milk. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 5-7 minutes. Puree the soup until smooth – either with a stick blender or in a liquidiser.

Salt and Pepper Method Turn on the oven to 180ºC. Place the cauliflower on tray; sprinkle it with oil and seasoning of your choice (chilli flakes, roast cumin or nutmeg) and the zest. Season it well with salt and pepper. Place in the oven for about 30-45 minutes until it is brown and cooked through.

Heat a pan over a medium heat and gently fry the chorizo until crisp. Stir in the chopped parsley. Pour the soup into bowls, sprinkle with the chorizo and drizzle over a little oil from the pan to finish. Enjoy!!!

Cauliflower Fried “Rice” (A tasty healthy option, the small blended cauliflower resembles rice in this dish) Ingredients 1 medium head cauliflower cut into florets and stalk sliced finely 2 eggs 1 shallot finely diced ½ tablespoon ginger minced 2-3 cloves garlic, minced 1 large carrot, diced 60g sweet corn 80g peas Spring onions, finely diced Bunch of fresh coriander chopped 50g Cashew Nuts 2 to 3 tablespoons soy sauce Method Put the cauliflower florets in a food processor until it breaks down into rice-sized pieces. In a large pan put it over a medium heat, add some oil and slowly cook the onion with a pinch of salt, add the garlic and cook for a further two or three 36 West Kerry Live

It isn't everyday that one would have the pleasure of attending a solo concert by Danny O'Reilly from the Coronas in their own school but that is exactly what happened last Friday in Mean Scoil Nua an LeithTriúigh, Castlegregory. Danny graciously accepted an invitation from Principal Aodán MacGearailt to perform a concert in the school. A very excited and enthusiastic audience of students, staff and parents waited in anticipation for his arrival and when he finally entered the hall the decibel level was raised significantly around the area by frenzied applause and high pitched screams (and that was just the staff!) Danny wasted no time and kicked off his acoustic performance with a beautiful rendition as gaeilge of "Heros or Ghosts". His melodic voice captured his audience immediately. Than it was on to "All the Others" where Danny's powerful and unmistakably unique voice blew everyone away. This was quickly followed by "Mark my Words"- another classic. The Piece de Resistance was yet to come. Danny inquired if anyone would like to join him on stage. One very lucky student, Ellen o Mahony, who is already a well known singer in the Castlegregory area and a major fan of the Coronas, got a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform on stage with Danny. She accompanied him for San Diego Song and put her own stamp on it. Amazing!

Aoine: 9.30 – 11.30 Rang Gramadaí Ardleibhéal

Is maith is cuimhin liom an chéad uair a thiomáin mé siar go Corca Dhuibhne agus an ghrian ag scoilteadh na gcloch agus na sléibhte ag seasamh amach os ár gcomhair. Áit dhraíochtúil a bhí ann. Mhothaíos ansin nach mbeadh an tarna rogha agam ach titim i ngrá leis an ndúthaigh sin. Níl aon áit eile ar domhan go mbeadh an seans agat blaiseadh a fháil don dteanga agus don gcultúr a bhí ar fud na tíre uair dá raibh. Lá i ndiaidh lae bíonn deiseanna againn anseo ár gcuid Gaelainne a chleachtadh, a úsáid agus a fheabhsú ach tá i bhfad níos mó ag baint leis an nGaeltacht ná an Ghaelainn amháin. Bíonn craic agus ceol againn idir óg agus aosta sna tithe tábhairne timpeall na háite. Bímíd ann mar ábhar oidí ar feadh coicíse ach le linn an chúrsa címíd an mistéir, an paisean agus an tírghrá atá ag leanúint na Gaelainne. Dá thoradh sin spreagtar ionainn grá láidir don dteanga agus fonn í sin a thabhairt don gcéad ghlúin eile. Máire Ní Choileáin agus Niamh Nic Giobúin, Coláiste Mhuire gan Smál.

11.30 – 1.00 Maidean Chaife.

Is cuid mhór d’ar ndúchas í an Ghaelainn agus is mian linn í a shaibhriú. Bíonn deis againn é sin a dhéanamh is muid ag freastal ar chúrsa sa Ghaeltacht mar scoláirí ó Choláiste Mhuire Gan Smál. Ní mór na hócáidí ná na deiseanna a bhíonn againn go ginearálta Gaelainn shaibhir, chruinn, fhileata agus cheolmhar a chlos ar bhonn laethúil ach bíonn an deis sin againn is muid ag freastal ar an gcúrsa. Tugtar tacaíocht dúinn agus spreagtar sinn an teanga a phlé agus a labhairt. Is léir go bhfuil ana-shuim agus grá ag na léachtóirí don nGaelainn. Ach ceann do na moltaí atá againn ná ba cheart ceist a chur ar na scoláirí cad atá uathu ionas go bhféadfaidís úsáid níos fearr a bhaint as an nGaelainn ina saol féin anois agus sa todhchaí mar mhúinteoirí. - Clodagh & Ciara Coláiste Mhuire gan Smál Anois teacht an Earraigh…….dein do mhacnamh ar cad is féidir leatsa a dhéanamh chun úsáid agus labhairt na teanga a chur chun cinn le linn 2016. Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Is dócha gur í an droch aimsir fé ndeara, gur chuaidh mo chuid scríbhinn don mbliain nua amú. Bail’ ó Dhia ort a léitheóir agus bliain ádhmhar agus shláintiúil chugat, fiú más déanach féin é. Bliain mhaith? Is dócha gur beag a bheadh ag aontú leat. Buadh ar Chiarraí, d’fhás an féar, ach dhein an síor bháisteach praiseach do aon mhaitheas a bhí ann. Is cuimhin liom breis agus daichead bliain ó shin uair go rabhas ag obair ar feadh tréimhse leis an bhForas Talúntais i Maigh Eó agus bliain roimhe sin ar scoil in oirthear na Gaillmhe gur é an port a chloisfeá coitianta, ná cathain a glanfar Abha an tSuca agus an tSionainn ó bhonn! Bhíos don dtuairim go raibh sár obair déanta ar fhadhb na tuile i gCluain Meala, ach is baolach go raibh na cosa á ní gan iarratas do chuid do mhuintir an bhaile sin arís. Ba cheart do pé rialtas a thiocfaidh ar barra, na fadhbanna móra seo a réiteacht, nó an tábhachtaí an turasóir nó fiú, an t-ainmhí, ná an duine go bhfuil a thigh fé uisce?

The Ebb And Flow Of The Great Blasket Island

le

Mícheál de Mórdha foilsithe ag Liberties ‘Great Blasket Island is a speck of land off Ireland’s west coast, battered by the cold waves of the North Atlantic, miles from the nearest town on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. Even at its peak, when its fishermen in their little naomhóga were hauling in nets bursting with mackerel, the population never reached 200 souls. It was abandoned in 1953. Yet there is something about this little island and its Irish-speaking inhabitants that has fascinated Ireland and the world. Writers and poets from the Great Blasket, from Ireland and from abroad documented life there. TDs in the Dáil in Dublin debated its affairs, and so did MPs in parliament in London. Taoiseach Éamon de Valera visited twice. In this book, originally published in Irish as Scéal agus Dán Oileáin, the author draws on personal experience, interviews with islanders and a wealth of other sources to present a textured, comprehensive social and cultural history of this fabled island. ‘The author’s splendidly researched historical and cultural exposition... combined with the smoothly sensitive translation, evokes the distinctive character of another world in a lucid, stimulating and delightful presentation.’’ - Dr Declan Downey, UCD School of History - Coiscéim
