Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 16th Octonber will be Lenny Abrahamson's gothic drama The Little Stranger. Starring Domhnall Gleeson, the film tells the story of Dr. Faraday, the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants - mother, son and daughter are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. The following week on Tuesday 23rd the feature will be the Polish drama Cold War. The film is a passionate love story between
a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. With vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it's the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate - an impossible love story in impossible times.

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams READERS SUGGESTIONS. Since mentioning the issues a few weeks ago in these notes I have been contacted by people with various ideas on how the Peninsula should plan for the future. Generally people appear reluctant to attend let alone express their views fully in a forum at a public meeting. With this in mind I invite all who wish to make their constructive views and remedial suggestions known on the topics mentioned hereunder to submit same in writing ,by email by phone or in person to me before the end of October. All suggestions will be treated in confidence, placed in urgent or longer term categories and presented to a PENINSULA PLAN FOR THE FUTURE meeting next month. The 8 topics needing your views are INFRASTRUCTURE, CAPACITY, COMPETITIVENESS (pricing), TRANSPORT (day and night), FACILITIES (sporting and other), EMPLOYMENT, EFFECTS ON PENINSULA AFTER BREXIT/ TRUMPS AGENDA and DINGLE'S FUTURE AS A BUSINESS TOWN. Replies to me at Cluaismore, Dingle or email to risteardmacliam@gmail. com or over a cup of coffee anywhere. Míle Buíochas. FÉILE BIA. What a fantastic weekend the Feile Bia has turned out to be again this year. The organisers wish to thank all the participants at the taste trail, the food stalls and cooking exhibitions, the town park and street entertainment, the lectures, the stewards, the outlets who provided parking and all who helped to clean up after the huge attendance each day. The taste buds were surely satisfied by all who spent some time wandering between the streets and lanes last weekend. Three local business outlets featured in the prizes at the Blas Na hÉireann Awards Ceremony. Comhgairdeas to Jerry Kennedy Butchers, Dick Mack's Brewhouse and Micilín Muc all keeping the Peninsula flag flying high in these very competitive and prestigious circles. Also good to seen that the Charthouse Restaurant has retained its 6 West Kerry Live
Michelin Bib Gourmand Status this year which is an award achieved through hard work and exceptionally high standards of quality food and service. EVENTS. The Dingle Folk Festival is next on the events list scheduled for the Bank Holiday Weekend from October 26to 28th. This will be closely followed by the annual Maritime Weekend planned for November 2nd to 4th with full programme details in our next edition. MENS SHED. The Dingle Mens Shed in Ballintaggart has really been transformed from a farm facility into a fine activity centre in a short time. They are planning another open day shortly so an ideal place for men of all ages to meet, chat ,do some creative work or learn new skills or pass spare time in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Open Day details in our next edition. NEW BUSINESS. The Business Chamber welcome another local family setting up a new business in our town. The Fish Box Flannerys Seafood Bar in Green Street is the latest addition to the list of food outlets in Dingle and we wish Micheal and his staff every success with this venture. TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue on Saturdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 2p.m. We request people not to leave clothes bags on the ground when the recycling bin is full as same are being attacked by birds, dogs and cats leaving the contents unusable and a litter mess in the immediate area as well. The event has grown from 4 campervans in the first year to a massive 65 vehicles last year, even though the weather was against us last year, we didn't let it dampen our spirits, such is the spirit in the VW scene. Mike in The Junction Bar has, over the last couple of years, opened up his car park for us also due to the enormity of the event. Both Mike and his staff there deserve a special mention for their wonderful welcome and wonderful food that they serve and nothing is a trouble to them.

Farming News Key Agriculture Budge Announcements 1. Suckler Cow Payment The €20m Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot Scheme (BEEPS) will add to the existing €300m BDGP/Genomics beef sector supports. Up to a maximum of 500,000 cows and it's understood farmers will be paid based on income forgone. It's also understood that the weighing of calves will be part of the scheme. 2. €60m for Brexit protection €60 million in current and capital Brexit related supports will be provided to improve resilience in the farm sector, as along with supporting productivity improvements in the food sector 3. Restoration of the Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) payments The Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme formerly the Disadvantaged Area Scheme will be restored pre-crash budget level of €250m. Payments will be further targeted at the most marginal lands. This provides an additional €23m which is a 24% increase over the last two years. 4. Funding for TAMS Some €70m has been allocated for TAMS (Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme) for 2019. Provide co-funding for a range of on-farm investment under the RDP funded Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme and funding for the Horticulture Development Scheme. 5. Income averaging for off farm income Income averaging option for farmers has been extended to include farm families with an off-farm trading. Income averaging allows eligible farmers to calculate their taxable income as the average of their income in the current year and the previous four years, on a rolling basis, thus smoothing their tax liability over a 5 year cycle. The measure will cost the State - €2.5 per annum 6. Stock relief (extended for 3yrs until end 2021) Stock relief is a long-standing farming tax relief that encourages investment in improving stock quality and thus output. There are three separate measures: •
the 25% General Stock Relief on Income Tax;
• the 50% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Registered Farm Partnerships; and
Compared to the 2018 allocation, an additional €57m in current expenditure and an extra €7 million in capital expenditure is being allocated to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in 2019. The additional funding allocated by the Government in its 2019 Budget and Estimates decisions provides for new and expanded measures to be implemented by the Department. 11. An additional €1m in funding for the horticulture sector, bringing the total provision for a sector particularly challenged by Brexit to €6 million. This includes a comprehensive package to deal with the emerging challenges arising from Brexit. Today’s Estimates provide for a gross budget of €1.596 billion for the Department. Additional money will be delivered giving to total annual budget for 2019 of €1.616 billion. This is on top of a €1.2 billion EU allocation for Direct Payments, that are being paid out at present. Other Funding provided included capital €27 million in Brexit related supports for the food industry comprising: • €13 million in supports for food industry competitiveness and innovation; • €3 million for Artisan and Micro food and beverage programmes through the Leader Programme and for LEAN manufacturing initiatives designed to improve competitiveness • an additional €5 million for Bord Bia, bringing the total Grant in Aid to €46.6 million. This is a 60% increase in funding for marketing and promotion of our food offering since 2014; • €6m in funding to progress an €8 million Food Innovation Hub in Moorepark, of which €2 million was provided in 2018. • An increased allocation of €4m for 2019 has also been provided to assist with the strategic development of the Horse and Greyhound sector Finally, on the matters of the budget, there were a number of actions and measures introduced that will affect the tax take from every individual, farmer and layman alike. A number of these agri-taxation measures are welcomed and include: • The lifting of the restriction under Income Averaging whereby farmers with additional self-employed income (for either themselves or their spouses) could not participate. Income Averaging is a useful tool in successfully managing volatility will now be available to more farmers. • Important reliefs for the sector have been renewed for a further three years: • Stamp Duty Exemption on Transfers of Land to Young Trained Farmers
• the 100% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Certain Young Trained Farmers (YTF).
•
7. Stamp Duty Relief for young trained farmers extended
• 100% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Certain Young Trained Farmers
An exemption from stamp duty has been extended where farm land is sold or transferred to ‘young trained farmers’. These are farmers who are under 35 years of age and have (or will have within a specified period following the receipt of the farm land) specified relevant educational qualifications (known as the ‘green cert’). 8. Income tax changes Workers will not now pay the higher rate of income tax until they earn €35,500. Combined with USC changes, the top marginal rate on incomes up to €70,000 will be reduced to 48.5pc. Some 150,000 self-employed workers will gain as the earned income credit will be increased by €200 to €1,350 9. More money for forestry €103.5 million for improvements in grant and premium rates for planting forests. 10. Department of Agriculture is to get an extra €57m in 2019 12 West Kerry Live

25% General Stock Relief on Income Tax
50% Stock Relief on Income Tax for Registered Farm Partner-
The increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit by €200 to €1,350and increased supports for the self-employed. Most farmers, foresters, fishermen and small food processors are self-employed and will see their tax liability fall with the increase in the tax credit. It is hard to tell if this is a good budget, or an election budget, but it appears to be putting more money in most peoples’ pockets. Time will tell if the Budget or the Government lasts. Annual Declaration And Claim For Low-Emission Slurry Spreading If any farmer that applied under the LESS option on his GLAS plan the department of Agriculture are sending out forms to every farmer in GLAS that has opted for this option. The Minister said that the deadline was extended for chemical fertilizer from Mid-September until the end of the month, and that the deadline was also extended for the application of organic manures from mid- to late October. This is an annual declaration form which must be completed, in order to process your 2018 payment. The fully completed form must be submitted by Wednesday the 31st
of October 2018 to the GLAS section in Johnstown castle estate. Your 2018 GLAS payment cannot processed until this form is returned and approved for payment. You are not required to enclose receipts with this form. They must be kept by you with your record sheets and made available for inspection. Each farmer must spread a minimum of 50 tonne of organic manure, and if he is importing this from a neighbouring holding, he must complete an export form “Record 3”, and submit this to the DAFM Nitrates Section in Johnstown Castle, be the end of the year.
Pat Hanafin
Commonage Framework Plans The Department of Agriculture are sending out letters to all farmers that still don’t have their commonage framework plans submitted online at this stage. Until this framework plan is submitted the applicants on that commonage won’t get their balancing money for 2017 and their 2018 GLAS money. There are a range of issues holding up the submission of these commonage plans, these are farmers not paying for the drawing up of the plan, problems with the online system, and advisors waiting on the information back into them from people on the framework plan. What ever the issue, please help your advisor resolve the problems. It is understood that almost all CMP’s are 90% complete or more. Many are complete and are just awaiting a final check, before submission. It is envisaged that most advisors will have most plans submitted before the end of October, and this should result in no more delays in 2017 payment and none at all on their 2018 payment, due at the end of the year. Farmers are thanked for their patience and asked to hold out just those few extra weeks.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís It was hugely encouraging to see so many of our farming community at the Dingle Food Festival Farmer’s Forum last weekend. Speakers from Gas Networks Ireland, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the Marine and Renewable Energy Institute, Manna Organic Store and Teagasc led an informative and lively debate around the potential for bioenergy to provide new income streams for farmers and also around the cost savings to be gained from energy efficiencies. Good news on the night also - we had funding confirmed for a feasibility study for a community led anaerobic digester plant on the peninsula. The funding is from Údarás na Gaeltachta under the LECo project www. leco.interreg-npa.eu. This study will help us to better understand how bioenergy may form part the solution to achieve energy independence for the Dingle Peninsula. Contact info@dinglehub.com if you would like to know more about this project. We also had a great turn-out for the first Coder Dojo session in the hub last Friday and it’s wonderful to see so much enthusiasm for coding here. The large numbers meant we didn’t have quite as much equipment as we would like to so if anyone has their own devices they are welcome to bring them along to future sessions. We are very grateful for sponsorship from TechSpace, Standard Access and Fexco which means we can now add cool projects like programming drones using Scratch and a new Raspberry Pi strand. All classes are free and our mentors donate their time, expertise and services for free. All funds go to equipment purchase only and donations are most welcome. Also, Kerry coders will come together at a MegaDojo event in IT Tralee on Saturday, 13th October. Check it out and book your place on http://megadojo.ie/tralee/ The Grow Remote Network is certainly taking on a life of its own and we’re delighted to have met the talented group driving this initiative at the first conference in Tralee last week. I would recommend following them on twitter @GrowRemoteIrl and facebook as they build the connections between companies with remote working opportunities on offer and those who want to live and work in beautiful regions like ours. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24hour access and more. I hope everyone really enjoyed the Food Festival. The idea of a food festival is for the whole community and visitors to enjoy and celebrate the local offerings and hospitality. We have worked hard to keep it this way without it being a corporate event or a festival for the elite. I am sure that all would agree that there is something for everyone at the festival and it benefits the whole community and local businesses. Even though I am very involved, and very biased, it is now without doubt one of the best food festivals in Ireland and even beyond. It is something very very special and I hope we never take it for granted.
Method
Ingredients 1 large cauliflower (cut into large thick slices about 2 inches)
Enjoy!!!
bunch of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

While we may have eaten half our body weight in food over the weekend, I am also hoping that we are now inspired to continue to cook up some tasty food. This recipe hopefully might offer something a little different. This tastes incredible and looks fabulous on a plate.
Put this back in the oven and cook for a further 2 minutes before serving. Drizzle with a little more lemon juice and serve.
rapeseed oil salt and pepper Heat the oven 180oC. Start by browning the cauliflower in a pan. Heat a large pan and once it is hot add a little oil and then add the cauliflower. Season well with salt and pepper and allow it to cook over a high heat for about 2-3 minutes. Turn it over and repeat. Once it is brown, place it on a tray and then into the oven. This will take about 15-20 minutes to cook. Meanwhile put a pan over high heat, once hot add a little oil and the mushrooms with some salt and pepper. Cook them quickly and once they start to brown add a small bit of the butter but don’t let it burn. Remove the mushrooms once they are done and add the remaining butter and then the bread crumbs, parsley and blue cheese. Mix this well and add a little lemon juice to taste. Take the cauliflower out of the oven and put the mushrooms on top of each piece, spoon a little of the bread crumb and blue cheese mixture over the mushrooms.

You don’t need a Cold Heart to have Warm Hands!
making it a key nutrient to improve blood flow. All B-vitamins, including B3 and folic acid are involved in the stress response and nerve health. Although found in a huge range of foods, in times of increased demand or risk, it may be necessary to supplement with a B-complex.
Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Nitric Oxide is a strong vasodilator found in flavonoid and L-arginine-rich foods. In 1998, three American pharmacologists picked up the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discoveries of the role of Nitric Oxide in the body. These include widening blood vessels, helping to regulate blood pressure, initiating erections, battling infections, preventing formation of blood clots and acting as a messenger in the nervous system. Foods to boost your Nitric Oxide levels include argula (also known as rocket, now we know why!), beetroot, leafy greens, citrus, high-quality dark chocolate, walnuts and pomegranate. Spices such as garlic, cayenne and ginger improve circulation too and have a warming effect in the body, particularly useful during cold weather. Add them in food or let them infuse in some olive oil to apply to hands and feet in chilly weather. Ginko Biloba, available with prescription, showed a 60% reduction in symptoms of Raynaud’s Syndrome and is used widely for both circulatory and nerve health. Vitamin E in avocados, olive oil, wheatgerm, pumpkin seeds and walnuts protects blood vessels and omega 3 keeps blood from getting too sticky, improving blood flow.
That old saying “cold hands, warm heart” is commonly used to describe someone who is outwardly cold and unwelcoming but probably really nice deep down. However, cold hands and feet can spell trouble for some people especially during the colder Winter months. Raynaud’s Syndrome which can be triggered by cold temperatures yet surprisingly is more common in Ireland and the UK than our frosty friends up north, in Scandinavia and the Arctic. It could be that even though we talk incessantly about the weather, we are not great at dressing for the very cold weather. We are not too bad at donning puffa coats and fleece jackets but our heads, hands and feet are often left to fend off the icy chills with little or no protection. Hats, gloves and appropriate footwear are obvious items to add to your Winter wardrobe but there is plenty of remedies inside your kitchen that can keep you toasty from the inside out, keeping both your heart and your hands warm throughout the cold months. Raynaud’s Syndrome is a condition which affects the blood supply to certain areas of the body, mainly fingers and toes. It is caused by temporary spasms of the small arteries responsible for bringing blood to the skin. The skin may appear white at first, then blue and once the spasm has passed, the rush of blood to the affected area, it can become quite red. It can be accompanied by numbness, tingling and pain. An episode can last from a few minutes to several hours. Triggers for Raynaud’s Syndrome include exposure to cold temperatures, stress, anxiety and fear (blood vessels are controlled by our nervous system). Primary Raynaud’s Syndrome is the most common form, accounting for 80-90% of cases and develops by itself though the reasons are unclear. Secondary Raynaud’s can develop with autoimmune disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Lupus. People with primary Raynaud’s also have a higher risk of developing RA and Lupus - there is a link though not yet fully understood. While Primary Raynaud’s Syndrome is not considered serious, it is worthwhile to get a clear diagnosis from your GP and to rule out any underlying issues, Keeping the body warm, particularly hands and feet is number one on the agenda to manage Raynaud’s. Activities such as cardio-type exercise will improve circulation and may prevent the frequency of vasospasms. The nervous system controls the contraction and dilation of blood vessels which is why strong emotions such as stress, anxiety and fear can trigger an episode. Managing stress through exercise, yoga and breathing makes sense as does seeking help with on-going anxiety or fear. Nutrition-based remedies for Raynaud’s target circulation and the stress response and luckily, there is a wide range of ingredients to suit everyone’s taste! These nutrients are useful in heart and circulatory health, maintaining normal blood pressure and preventing damage to blood vessels, making them relevant to most adults and not just those affected by Raynaud’s Syndrome. Vasodilators such as ACE inhibitors and Betablockers are medications used to open up blood vessels and prevent heart-related health conditions. Viagra is also a vasodilator and in a round-about way improves matters of the heart too! Certain foods can dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow though maybe not as immediate as some drugs, but certainly worth throwing into the pot if cold hands and feet, poor circulation and Raynaud’s syndrome are affecting you. Niacin (vitamin B3), found in seafood, chicken liver, portobello mushrooms, sunflower seeds and green peas is beneficial to the small capillaries bringing blood to the skin, 20 West Kerry Live

"If there was a shortage of meat we'd have rice pudding and things like fried spuds or mashed spuds with homemade butter and cut onions. Or we'd get bones from the butcher to make soup. If the butcher was in a good mood he'd put in a bit of meat and we'd slice it up to put in mutton pies." "In bad weather the cows were kept in the cowshed tied up. They had a bed of straw and were fed hay. They'd be taken out for a drink from the stream."
Does your Septic Tank need to be emptied?
"Hay was kept in the hayshed. Some people didn't have a hayshed so they'd make a reek of hay, a reek was shaped like a barm brack. The reek was thatched with reeds to keep it dry. Neighbours helped each other to do the thatching. It was the same for the oats except it was called a stack of oats, it was broad at the base and came up to a point. It'd be full of rats!"

The deadlock was broken with 5 mins to go in the first half. And by god was it broken. The ball was sprayed out to Maurice Slattery on the right wing, sending a pin point ball into the feet of Brandon Hoare, who turned and twisted so much he must have made himself dizzy cause his left legged shot was stuck into the top corner.

HT Castle Celtic 1 - 0 Second half Castle playing against a strong breeze were happy to soak up the pressure. Castle's Second came from Maurice Slattery, a delightful through ball spliting the defence found Maurice cantering in towards goal. With just the Keeper to beat he slipped the ball low into the bottom corner. Classic did manage to pull one back, after some great defending by Shane "Kung Fu" Kenny the ball ended up going out for a corner kick, with the ball swung in near post, it was deemed to have crossed the line before Keeper Eoin Kennedy got a hand to it..... game on for the last ten minutes... With Classic throwing the kitchen sink forward in search of an equaliser. Castle did have one great chance to put it out of reach. Enda "twinkle toes" Whelan broke up play in the middle of the park, playing a quick one-two with Maurice Slattery he delicately placed the ball between the Keeper and the 6 yard box to the far post where Brandon Hoare was waiting to tap it in. Only for a bad touch and some last ditch defending did the ball stay out. Team: Eoin Kennedy, Cormac Cronin, Alan McNamara, Shane Kenny, Damien McMahon, Maurice Slattery, Conor Shannon, Enda Whelan, Steven Speirs, Brandon Hoare, Michael Scanlon Subs: Dylan Hoare, Dara Butler, David O'Brien, Thomas Butler, Dominic Spillane, Stephen Morrissey Table Quiz Friday October 12th - Bolands Bar Castlegregory @ 9p.m Tables of 4 - €20 Castlegregory Celtic would be delighted if you

On November 2nd I will begin to cycle from Cairo, Egypt, down to Cape Town, South Africa. 12,000km over every sort of road and terrain imaginable. Solo & unsupported. It'll just me my bike and I! The cycle is in aid of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. His appearance on the Brendan O'Connor show which captured the hearts of the country. After his death his parents set up the foundation in his memory and primarily in order to promote his anti-suicide #Livelife message. The foundation also assist in his other causes of providing age appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice care centres. My Africa cycle will take me through 10 countries (Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa). Passing through all 3 deserts of Africa (Sahara, Kalahari & Namib), the Simian Mountains in Ethiopia, Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Malwai and the Victoria Falls. All I'll have is my bike, spare clothes, tent, bike parts, electronics (such as a GPS so my folks know where I'll be), food and water. Africa is easily the hardest continent to cycle, due to physical challenges & geopolitical challenges. But no doubt that it will be an epic trip with some great stories! I expect the cycle to take me 6-8 months. I will be updating (WiFi permitting) on Facebook & Twitter. Facebook - Tomás' Africa Cycle Twitter - @SearsToms I've raised just over €7,000 to date for the Donal Walsh Foundation & if anyone would like to donate you can do so at: www.idonate.ie/cyclingafrica . Any donations are greatly appreciated!

Keel-Listry 0-16
The GGC under-16s started their Mid Kerry championship series of games last Monday (October 1) against Keel-Listry in Keel. The GGC lads never got going, with a poor start proving to be half their downfall. They trailed by 0-8 to 0-1 early on in the encounter. Despite a rally, where they matched Keel-Listry, it was that poor start that hurt them as they fell to a seven-point defeat. Team: Cian Knight; Aodhan Roche, Diarmuid McGillycuddy, Sean Quirke; Liam Joy, Kieran O’Sullivan, Darragh Blennerhassett; Liam Smith, Darragh McKeefry; Sean Page, Kaiya O’Flaherty, Keith Sheahan; Eanna Healy, Rian O’Donovan, Aaron Broderick. Subs: Cian Lyons, Jack McGillycuddy (subkeeper) and Stephen Breen. Mid Kerry U16 championship (round 2): Playing against a strong wind in the first half GGC got off to a bad start conceding 1.2 in the first 6 mins. But 1.1 from Darragh McKeefry got the team going and Rian Donovan levelled things from a free in the 10th minute. From then to half time scores were scarce with Liam Smith scoring a fine point from play to send the team in a point up (1.03 to 1.02) at half time.
TRAINING: Underage training (under-6s to under-10s) continues at the field on Sunday mornings. We aim to get started each Sunday at 11.15am. Nuala Moore Team : Nuala Moore, Sandra Fitzgibbon, Dr Patrick Buck, Rory Golden, Dr Ann Payne, Dr Niamh Feely, David Hick and inputs from Mallow Search & Rescue and other agencies depending on their availability. This is a Rescue Emergency Care Cert course with 12 CPD points available. Over the last few years what I have noticed is that, water users are engaged in more and more extreme events and sometimes the safety planning or the preparation could be better. Maybe we believe it will never happen to us. Ocean Triple R- Remote Recovery Rescue Emergency Care is a concept I have developed to bring the water user together with the medics and the rescue personnel to share information and work on industry best practice. What we have to accept in taking on these challenges is that accidents will happen. Mistakes will occur and human error is a real factor. With the right training, experience and knowledge we can improve our performances, increase our survival times and ensure our safety. Rescue Recovery is a very difficult area to approach considering the many potential outcomes so for the last few years, I have been working in areas of recovery and extreme medicine. I felt that there was a gap appearing in the need for understanding of risks and outcomes. This is an approach that by engaging all of us together we can develop a better understanding of the risk of cold water immersion. To live on the edge we need to We have have put together a number of scenarios and lectures, discussions and workshops. Areas covered with application to specific sports: Cold Water injuries for all recreational sports including Trauma Management Cold Water Incapacitation Post Rescue Collapse After drop Drowning management Rescue recovery Looking at the understanding and management of the psychological responses to stress and distress of decision making. West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2018 Semi-Final
Shortly after Brian Ó Raoil had a great opportunity to score his sides must needed goal but Ó Raoil was denied by a great block from Annascaul’s Gearóid Lyne. Once again it was Annascaul who scored next with a point from play for James Scanlon. Two pointed frees from Aidan Crean and Jason Hickson kept Annascaul firmly in control. The score after 15 minutes played in the second half, Lispole 0-5 to 0-16 Castlegregory.
In the Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2018 Semi-Final, Annascaul beat the home side Lispole in Páirc Sheáin Uí Bharóid, Lispole last Sunday, Lispole 0-9 to 1-16 Annascaul. This victory means that Annascaul will now play the winners of the other semi, either An Ghaeltacht or Dingle in the final of the Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2018.
Aaron Ó Muircheartaigh kicked a point from play for Lispole. Then Annascaul’s James Crean put the game completely beyond Lispole on the 19th minute when he scored the games only goal. Both sides ran their benches at this stage and it was Lispole’s best player on the day Deaglán Ó Súilleabháin who kicked the games three last scores with three fine points from play. When Referee Billy O’Shea blew the whistle for full time the scoreboard in Páirc Sheáin Uí Bharóid read Lispole 0-9 to 1-16 Annascaul.
Playing with the aid of the wind Annascaul’s impressive Cathal Ferriter opened the scoring with a point from play. This was followed by a Deaglán Ó Súilleabháin point from a free kick for Lispole. Annascaul with points from play from Jason Hickson, two from Cathal Ferriter and a pointed free from Jason Hickson extended their lead to four. The score after 15 minutes of play was Lispole 0-1 to 0-5 Annascaul.

Two Aidan Crean points, one from play and one from a free kick extended Annascaul’s lead. Jason Hickson for Annascaul and Cathal Ó Súilleabháin for Lispole exchanged pointed frees. Shane Foley with a point from play and pointed frees from Aidan Crean and Jason Hickson gave Annascaul a commanding lead and when Referee Billy O’Shea blew the whistle for half time the scoreboard in Páirc Sheáin Uí Bharóid read Lispole 0-2 to 0-11 Annascaul.
Annascaul: Tommy Pierce, Joe Kennedy, Gearóid O’Shea, Fintan Herlihy, Andrew Finn, Gearóid Lyne, Shane Foley (0-2), Jaime O’Driscoll, Niall McKenna, Eamon Hickson, Aidan Crean (0-5, 3fr), Cathal Ferriter (0-3), James Crean (1-0), James Scanlon (0-1), Jason Hickson (0-5, 4fr) Fir Ionaid: Fionn Coakley, Alan Falvey, David Clifford
Lispole opened the scoring in the second half with a Deaglán Ó Súilleabháin point from a free kick that gave the home crowd a little belief. Unfortunately Annascaul were not in a forgiven mood and points from play from Shane Foley and Aidan Crean increased their lead to ten. Lispole’s Deaglán Ó Súilleabháin was unlucky not to be at the end of long ball into heart of the Annascaul defence that ran out over the end line. Deaglán Ó Súilleabháin kicked a point from the resulting 45 for Lispole.

Annascaul Tidy Towns: Moving Forward
Tidy Towns Results 2018 After a lot of hard work by many people in the Annascaul community the adjudicator’s report for the 2018 SuperValu National Tidy Towns Competition has arrived. After a modest increase of 5 points last year Annascaul managed to gain another 11 points and its score was 268. That progress is being made can be seen from the figures: •
2013
248 marks
•
2014
252 marks
•
2015 & 2016 No entry
•
2017
257 marks
•
2018
268 marks
The detailed adjudicator’s report can be found on the Tidy Towns website, but some of the things that were particularly praised were the painting of Dan Foley’s Pub and the rededication of the Church of Ireland graveyard. The good appearance of many of the business premises and houses on the village’s Main Street were mentioned. We can thank our committed team of Community Employment workers for good marks on litter control and maintenance of green spaces. The ‘lovely old pump’ that was said to need painting has already been completed, along with three others. Planning Ahead So much for the past, now the forward planning begins! A Multi Annual Plan, grant aided by South Kerry Development Partnership, is now being drawn up with Woodrow Sustainable Solutions Ltd. As part of this, a workshop was held with Beaufort and Killorglin Tidy Towns Groups at the beginning of October. While the management committee are happy to do most of the work, we would love to hear residents’ ideas for short, medium and long term projects for the various categories to include in the plan. Email us at annascaultidytowns@gmail.com if you have suggestions. If you would like to volunteer or offer any other assistance, please get in touch as the more members of the community involved the better. Many hands make light work! AGM The Annual General Meeting of the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group will be held at the Jerome Connor Gallery at 8pm on Tuesday October 30th. Hopefully the multi-annual plan will be more advanced, and we can discuss the ways the village can continue to be improved. The chairman’s, secretary’s and treasurer’s reports will be read, and the election of a management committee will take place.

Milltown Community Award for Owen O'Shea Chris Horan
Vincent Prendergast of Milltown Chamber Alliance presents the "Stephen Lawlor Community Award" to Owen O'Shea Milltown’s “Stephen Lawlor Community Award” was presented to Owen O’Shea at a surprise ceremony in The Plough Bar on Saturday. For a man always impeccably prepared for everything he’s involved in, it was unusual to see him ‘caught on the hop’ and at a loss for words. Owen was congratulated by M.C. Maurice Harmon and Milltown Chamber Alliance’s Cultural Officer Vincent Prendergast. Mr Prendergast outlined Owen’s lifetime of volunteerism with many groups, including the Credit Union, Comhaltas and politics, and noted how Owen’s vision and leadership inspired the many community projects and events in which he has been involved. His most recent success was chairing the 2018 County Fleadh Cheoil, injecting energy and variety into a local festival of traditional music and free family entertainment. Three major concerts were organised, including the unique solstice celebration at the Killaclohane Portal Tomb. Owen thanked the organising committee, and spoke about Stephen Lawlor, after whom the award is named, and how Stephen was the epitome of community spirit and volunteerism. “He was an exemplary community member, working hard with various local groups including the Tidy Towns and Comhaltas”, explained Owen. He also thanked Stephen’s mother, Ann Lawlor, who provided the perpetual trophy and travelled from her home in Longford to present the award. Stephen passed away in 2013 and is remembered in Milltown through this award. This year Owen joins previous recipients, local volunteers Willie Hanafin, Denis O’Mahony and Tom Hanafin, as a worthy winner. Owen also spoke about the huge community spirit in Milltown, especially visible at this year’s Fleadh. “My work as chairman was made easy by the team of over one hundred local volunteers”, he said, and added “I’ve enjoyed all my community work, and I love the meetings and the craic at events. It’s great to be out, doing something positive, building community and meeting new people. The recent culture of individualism needs to be challenged and we must reach out to people and help them feel part of a strong and supportive community.” This has been an important aspect of community work in Milltown, given the dramatic rise in population in recent years. Owen thanked his wife Cecelia for her support in all his involvement, recognising Cecelia’s own voluntary work as Treasurer for the 2018 Fleadh saw her head a team that raised the €70,000 to host the event and provide over €12,000 worth of free entertainment in Milltown. Owen also remembered the late Denis Courtney, who worked tirelessly for the community and Owen said it was his mission to organise “one hell of a Fleadh” in Denis’s memory. Hosts at The Plough Bar, Denis and Bernie Griffin, provide a commemorative trophy for the event and this was presented to Owen. Celebrations continued with traditional music and song from Owen’s fellow musicians and many friends. As well as his voluntary and professional commitments, Owen is also the author of several books, the latest of which is “A Century of Politics in the Kingdom: A County Kerry Compendium”, co-written with Gordon Revington, and goes on sale this month.

Jimmy Moriarty John Moriarty’s father, James Moriarty, (always known as Jimmy Phaid), was born on July 29th 1903 on a small farm near the village of Baile Loughig at the foot of Mount Brandon on the Dingle peninsula and was the youngest of nine children. He grew up speaking Irish and by the time he was seven years of age both of his parents had died. One of his earliest memories, later recounted to his own family, was an image of himself as a small boy, waiting for his mother to come home from Dingle. She was an invalid and had to make frequent trips to the doctor. He remembered the anxiety of waiting for her, and of climbing the hill at the front of the house, of watching for her and finally of seeing her coming home the road from Dingle in the ass and cart. Not too long after that she was dead and the image, the lonesomeness of the image of waiting for her to come home, stayed with him for the rest of his life. Jimmy’s childhood effectively ended with the death of his parents. As was customary, the home-place went to one of his older brothers and the other members of the family either emigrated to America or went into service. In Jimmy’s case, as soon as he was old enough, this meant the life of a farm boy, working for local farmers for little more than bed and board. Jimmy’s own memories of this time were mixed. Learning hardly anything at all in school by day, he went ag bohántaíocht by night and it was there in this or that neighbouring bothán, sitting on the floor before the fire and listening to the old stories, that he learned almost all of what he knew about himself and his world. Nightly he dropped down out of Irish history into Ireland’s Dreamtime. (Curlew150) In spite of the richness of this world of song and story, one of his stints at farm work brought hardship and hunger and years later, to his own family, he told of stealing eggs and drinking them because it was “a ‘mane’ house”. Ultimately he worked for a farmer where he was treated fairly and paid two shillings a week, which was saved for him by the woman of the house; once he was fed and had a place to stay he had no need of money. Eventually, it was this money that bought him his passage to America. It also bought him his first pair of new shoes and a suit for the journey. When he left Dingle in 1921, aged 17, he spoke mostly Irish, had little formal education and did not know how to sign his name in English. Then one morning, boarding it in Dingle, he took a train out of his language, out of his dreamtime, and after working briefly for a French farmer in Ontario he ended up working industrially making tyres in a factory called the Fisk Rubber, in Springfield in Massachussets. In his own words, he couldn’t at that time read H on the side of a bag and the first time he was asked to sign his name to a document and he couldn’t, the cold sweat of shame and embarrassment, he would say, came out through him. And so it was that Jimmy Phaid, loved by all the old women in Ballinloughig, chiefly because his father and mother had died when he was still so young, now he, the lad who had grown up in a largely oral culture, had become a bureaucratic X. (Curlew p151) Springfield, Massachusetts, was for years a favoured destination of Kerry emigrants; two of his sisters had already made the journey and although he did not have any specific address for them, it was there, in his new suit and his new shoes, that Jimmy headed. On arrival in Springfield, his own story has it that he stood for two entire days at a busy intersection until he met someone he knew from home who could direct him to his sisters. In later years he would recite the progress of his journey: Belfast, Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany and Springfield; a long and lonely way from Baile Loughig. Jimmy eventually found work and for the next few years repeated the pattern of hard work, of frugal living and of saving his money that had already been established in Dingle. According to his son Chris, at one time he held down three jobs, and eventually invested some of his savings in oil company shares, a small investment that came to have a big influence on John’s life in later years. It was here in Springfield that he met another Irish emigrant, Mary O’ Brien, from Barragougeen, a townland near Moyvane in North Kerry. They married in Springfield in 1929 and extraordinarily, by 1933, they had managed, courtesy of Jimmy’s savings, to return home to Kerry and to buy a small farm near to Mary’s home place, just half a mile outside the village of Moyvane. One of his proudest stories in later years was that he had come to own some of the fields that he had looked out on from a railway carriage on that first big journey from Dingle to Canada. 36 West Kerry Live
His home was now in North Kerry but Dingle was never far from his mind. His own family remember his claim that if, on a clear day, he looked out the front door of his house in Moyvane, he could see Mount Brandon in the distance. His oldest brother, Pats, known locally as Cabo, was still in the homeplace in Baile Loughig, and Jimmy made regular visits to him and his family, initially by horse and cart, later by bus, and always accompanied by one or more of his own children, visits that were eagerly anticipated and enjoyed by both sides. The Moriartys were, and are, a family of singers and storytellers; his nephews Tony and Paid were regularly featured on Radio Na Gaeltachta in the 1980s and the tradition of singing and storytelling continues in the family to this day. John Moriarty inherited Jimmy’s love for Dingle and West Kerry; he was fluent in the Irish language, passionate about the folklore, a fine singer and a wonderful storyteller. He too visited Baile Loughig and kept in close touch with his Dingle family. When he was sick with cancer he loved the visits from his Dingle cousins, he spoke fondly of them, of their decency and generosity of spirit. These Moriarty cousins still live and work in the Dingle area, the families of Jimmy’s nephews Paid and Tony Moriarty and of his niece, their sister, Bridie Scanlan. John once remarked that had his life not taken the course it did, he would have spent it back in West Kerry, farming among his father’s people, close to the earth and to the sea, proud of his name and of his rich heritage, and doing as Jimmy had done before him, ‘ag smaoineamh is ag macnamh dom féin’.

Common Knee Injuries Eddie O’Grady 1. Chondromalacia Patella Chondromalacia patella results from degeneration of cartilage on the underside the kneecap (patella)due to poor alignment of the kneecap (patella) as it slides over the lower end of the thighbone (femur). This condition can also be referred to as patellofemoral syndrome. It usually presents as pain in the front of the knee aggravated by activities such as running, jumping, climbing or descending stairs etc., or by prolonged sitting with knees in a moderately bent position. Patients with chondromalacia patella frequently have abnormal patellar “tracking” toward the lateral (outer) side of the femur. Some patients may also have a vague sense of “tightness” or “fullness” in the knee area with the condition. Mild swelling of the knee area may also occur. 2. Meniscus Tear Any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee, especially when putting your full weight on it, can lead to a torn meniscus. Each of your knees has two menisci — C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act like a cushion between your shinbone and your thighbone. A torn meniscus causes pain, swelling and stiffness. You might also feel your knee lock and have trouble extending it fully. Conservative treatment — such as rest, ice and medication — is sometimes enough to relieve the pain of a torn meniscus and allow the injury time to settle down on its own. In other cases, however, a torn meniscus requires surgical repair. The meniscus weakens with age. Tears are more common in people over the age of 30. If you have osteoarthritis, you’re at higher risk of injuring your knee or tearing your meniscus. When an older person experiences a meniscus tear, it’s more likely to be related to degeneration. This is when the cartilage in the knee becomes weaker and thinner. 3. Cruciate ligament rupture These ligaments are found inside your knee joint. They cross each other to form an “X” with the anterior cruciate ligament in front and the posterior cruciate ligament in back. The cruciate ligaments stabilize the knee. About half of all injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament occur along with damage to other structures of the knee, such as articular cartilage, meniscus, or other ligaments. Partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament are rare; most ACL injuries are complete or near complete tears. The cruciate ligaments can be injured in several ways such as : changing direction rapidly ; Stopping suddenly ; Slowing down while running ; Landing from a jump incorrectly ; Direct contact or collision to the knee. When you tear a cruciate ligament, you might hear a “popping” noise and you may feel your knee give way under you. Other typical symptoms include: Pain with swelling. Within 24 hours, your knee will swell. If ignored, the swelling and pain may resolve on its own. However, if you attempt to return to sports, your knee will probably be
unstable and you risk causing further damage to the cushioning cartilage (meniscus) of your knee. Loss of full range of motion Tenderness along the joint line Discomfort while walking Treatment for a cruciate ligament tear varies depending on the patient’s individual needs. For example, the young athlete involved in agility sports will need surgery to return safely to sports. Less active, older individuals may be able to return to a quieter lifestyle without surgery. 4. Collateral ligament strain/rupture The collateral ligaments of the knee are located one on either side of your knee joint. They help connect the bones of your upper and lower leg, inside your knee joint. The collateral ligaments help keep your knee stable. They keep your leg bones in place and keep your knee from moving too far sideways. A collateral ligament injury occurs when the ligaments are stretched or torn. A partial tear occurs when only part of the ligament is torn. A complete tear occurs when the entire ligament is torn into two pieces. A collateral ligament injury can occur if you get hit very hard on the inside or outside of your knee, or when you have a twisting injury. Sometimes the ligaments just sprain and this is easier to recover from and requires no surgery. With a collateral ligament injury, you may notice: Your knee is unstable and can shift side to side as if it “gives way” Locking or catching of the knee with movement Knee swelling Knee pain along the inside or outside of your knee Various orthopedic tests can help diagnose collateral ligament damage. More detailed knowledge of the injury can be obtained by MRI. Injured ligaments are considered “sprains” and are graded on a severity scale.
Sudden increase in training intensity Playing/training on rigid surfaces Tight quadriceps and hamstring muscles Poor foot posture, knee or hip control. Tendinopathies usually causes pain, stiffness, and loss of strength in the affected area. The pain may get worse when you use the tendon. An experienced practitioner will be able to diagnose a tendinopathy from both palpation and history of the condition. Tendinopathies can be confirmed by MRI which will give a clearer picture of the level of damage. Treatment for patellar tendinopathies varies depending on the level of injury and can vary from conservative treatment combining rest / eccentric training to surgical intervention in more serious cases. 7. Osgood Schlatter’s Disease(Kids) OsgoodSchlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing adolescents. It is an inflammation of the area just below the knee where the tendon from the kneecap (patellar tendon) attaches to the shinbone (tibia) called the tibial tuberosity. The condition gets worse with activity and better with rest. Osgood-Schlatter disease most often occurs during growth spurts, when bones, muscles, tendons, and other structures are changing rapidly. Because physical activity puts additional stress on bones and muscles, children who participate in athletics — especially running and jumping sports – are at an increased risk for this condition. However, less active adolescents may also experience this problem. The condition normally resolves over time but can be anything from a few weeks/ months to two years. It is nothing to worry about. A child can remain active but pain from the condition itself will limit that activity. Icing the area of pain and stretching leg muscles especially quads can help. NSAIDs can be used to relief the pain and inflammation but should be used sparingly and under doctors supervision.
If you have a collateral ligament injury, you may need: Crutches to walk until the swelling and pain get better
Eddie O’Grady
A brace to support and stabilize your knee Physical therapy to help improve joint motion and leg strength A lot of the time people don’t need surgery for collateral ligament damage but more serious cases may. 5. Baker’s Cyst Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that causes a lump at the back of the knee, leading to tightness and restricted movement. Usually, this condition is due to an underlying problem affecting the knee joint, such as arthritis or a cartilage injury. 6. Patella Tendinopathy Patellar tendinopathy(also known as Jumper’s knee) is an overuse injury affecting this knee tendon. There are a number of factors which can contribute to the development of patellar ten- Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) dinopathies. Grants for Solar Panels Question I heard that there is a new grant scheme for installing solar panels in your home. How does the scheme work and do I qualify? Answer The Solar PV schemegives grants to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a battery energy storage system at your home. This means you can generate and use renewable electricity in your home and reduce your electricity costs. The Solar PV scheme is a pilot scheme administered Solar by Systems the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected a registered contractor fromsimilar the to a unitUse and cylinder in your hot press.
