Dingle Notes Richard Williams Awards-- What a pleasant surprise it was to open the Irish Independent last Saturday and find Dingle mentioned no less than 3 times in the Readers Travel Awards Survey. Yes we were voted Number 1 Best Home Holiday Destination (are you surprised!!) and at Number 10 in Irelands Top 10 Tourist Attractions. Whats more Castlewood House was declared the winner of the Best Breakfast in Ireland section. So take a bow everybody but now comes the hard bit as we must work as hard if not harder to maintain those positions in 2017. Awards well deserved I have no doubt so lets get stuck in and keep up those high standards across all aspects of the tourist sector well into the future.
My Top 10 Wishes For Dingle 2017!!!. 1. A new multi purpose community hall in town. 2. Increased employment for all age groups in the peninsula. 3. Nios mรณ Gaelinn a cloisint timpeall an bhaile. 4. An all weather playing pitch in town. 5. Shop local--support the continuation of local employment. 6. A long term solution to our parking/traffic problems. 7. Continued investment and prosperity in the peninsula. 8. Nios mรณ meas ag muintir na h-รกite ar leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne. 9. Volunteering-- more involvement by locals in all active groups in the area. 10. Continued positive publicity about the peninsula. Slan Tamall!!!.
Road Works-- The traffic lights operating along The Wood area while the water pipes are being replaced are really working very well and the digital timing system is helping a smooth flow with minimum frustration for all road users. The workers are making great progress despite the tricky process of negotiating many underground obstacles and we hope the works will be completed in good time for what will hopefully be another busy tourist season. Business-- Great to hear that a number of local business outlets are planning to add some new ventures to their existing facilities. I hope their creative thinking will further add to the choice of amenities and facilities for locals and tourists alike.I note that a few local business outlets are taking a short break at present but will be back in full swing after recharging the batteries in a short while. Race Night-- The annual Race Night to raise funds for the New Years Eve Fireworks Display has been fixed for the Saturday 4th February in Dannos. Storm Festival-- The second Dingle Peninsula Storm Festival is scheduled for February 4th to 6th and the full programme will be published this weekend. I have not heard of any major storm heading our way but the organisers are confident their choice of title will come to pass again this year.

Second Case Of Avian Influenza Found In Co Galway The Department today announced that it has confirmed a second case of avian influenza H5N8 in a wigeon in County Galway. No outbreaks have been detected in poultry in Ireland so far. This confirms that poultry flocks across the country are at risk from introduction of the virus. The Department once more emphasises the requirement to confine poultry and other birds, and to apply strict bio-security measures to prevent the introduction of avian influenza. Poultry flock owners should remain vigilant for any signs of disease in their flocks, and report any disease suspicion to their nearest Department Veterinary Office. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has confirmed that although the H5N8 subtype can cause serious disease in poultry and other birds, no human infections with this virus have been reported world-wide and therefore risk to humans is considered to be very low. The public is advised not to handle sick or dead birds. Department staff will continue to collect sufficient birds for testing to help understand how the disease is distributed geographically, in different species and over time.
First Tranche Of Annual Forestry Premium Payments For 2017 DAFM has announced the first tranche of annual tax-free forestry premium payments for 2017. The payments are currently being issued to those forest owners who applied on-line through www.agfood.ie. A total of €26.80 million is being paid in this bulk payment run in respect of some 6,900 forest premium applications. The Department will continue to process on-line applications for 2017 forest premiums as they are received, with payments being issued on a weekly basis. I would encourage forest owners to avail of the on-line facility because of the obvious benefits for them in terms of early premium payment. Forest owners may continue to apply for the payment of the annual premium online, through the Department’s Online Services. For applicants who use the paper based application system, a further bulk premium payment run will be made in April 2017. Application forms for the paper based system will issue in February 2017. A total of €111.6m (including a capital carryover) has been provided by the Government for the continued development of Ireland’s forestry sector in 2017. This level of funding is further evidence of the Government’s ongoing commitment to the sector as set out in the Forestry Programme 2014 – 2020. The grants available under the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme cover the cost of establishing the forest plantation and the Scheme also provides for payment of annual forestry premium of up to €635 per hectare for 15 years. The Department’s forestry online services now facilitate payment to forestry applicants who use the Integrated Forest Information System (IFORIS) over the Internet. The IFORIS computer system was developed by the Forest Service for the processing of forestry pre-approval, grant and premium applications.
2017 New Tasks Reminder Ii The new year is here 2017 and all the bad weather and problems of 2016 are behind us. There will be problems that we encountered in 2016 and we should all try or best not to repeat these same mistakes this year. We should sit down and work out a plan of action for the year and set ourselves certain tasks to aim for and areas to improve on. We should start the year of on the correct path and keep all the necessary records filled up to date for the various enterprises on the farm. Areas to look at in the new year. Sheep Census: - Make sure your sheep census is filled out and submitted before the 31st of January 2017. This can be filled out on line. GLAS: - GLAS actions need to be completed and GLAS Records need to be kept of all actions carried out and made available for inspection. BVD Tagging Of Calves; - All new tags ordered are the new BVD tags and the tissue sample must be sent off to the lab for testing. Register the calves within the correct timeframe and carry out the necessary actions when you receive the results. Online Herd Register For Cattle: - If you haven’t already signed up to this facility make this a must in the new year. This does away with the need 10 West Kerry Live
to keep the Blue book for animal movements. The only need to keep the blue book is to keep a record of your animal remedies. Nitrates: - If you had problems in 2016 with Nitrates look at applying for a Derogation in 2017 Health And Safety: - Every farmer should get a Risk Assessment Document filled out for their farm. This is a very useful document and is required by Bord Bia and could also prevent any fatal accidents from occurring on your farm. It highlights the danger areas on the farm. Knowledge Transfer Groups: - If you are a member of a knowledge transfer group make sure and attend a minimum of 5 meetings and complete the necessary tasks before the 31st of May 2017 Farm Assitance Application: - Any farmer that is not making any money and is finding it hard to survive and pay their household bills each week and doesn’t have any other source of income should look into the farm assist scheme. This is a scheme that is open to all farmers if your level of income is below a certain level. There is no shame in applying and if you are not eligible then you won’t qualify for a payment. Cross Compliance: - Start the year of on the correct note in relation to cross compliance. We are going to run short courses on the points to look out for. It would be well worth attending. Courses For The New Year: Cross Compliance Course - Boom and Back Sprayer Course --Health and Safety Courses for TAMS Grants
The Sheep Welfare Scheme The Sheep Welfare Scheme is a new scheme targeted at sheep welfare with particular regard to the production system and the environment in which Irish sheep production takes place. Sheep farmers with breeding ewes can apply for payment based on 2 actions they choose from a menu to undertake. Firstly, you must submit a completed Sheep Census for 2016 and for each year of the scheme. Then you must return the application form by 31st January. Then you must undertake and complete the chosen actions, and comply with the relevant conditions set out in the T&C’s. Throughout the scheme, you must maintain a Scheme Record Book to record these actions and you must retain all relevant receipts and supporting documents. In order to qualify for payment, you must retain the reference number of ewes in a given scheme year on which you must carry out the chosen actions. Failure to do so will result in penalty. Certain exemptions are in place (eg: where on inspection a lower number of sheep is found due to a veterinary recommendation for a cull on welfare grounds). Flock Types: - The scheme actions are applicable to flocks of breeding ewes and are separated into Lowland and Hill flock actions. The decision as to which category an applicant belongs to will be based on the type of stock (Lowland or Hill) held, or where there is a mix, the ratio stock type held and as reported in the Annual Sheep Census 2015. Applicants with greater than 50% lowland ewes must choose from the options for Lowland flocks. Applicants with greater than 50 % hill type ewes must choose from the options for Hill flocks. The Application Form which has issued has designated individual flocks as Hill or Lowland based on Sheep Census records. Applicants who deem that they have been incorrectly categorised should notify the Department promptly regarding their position. You must choose whichever number is the greater. If you have greater than 50% lowland then you must chose from the options for Lowland flocks. If you have a greater than 50% Hill Flock then you must choose two options from the Hill Flock categories. The actions chosen must be carried out on all the breeding ewes, irrespective of the lowland/hill categorisation. The scheme requires you to undertake and complete two measurable and verifiable Sheep Welfare actions and the two actions chosen at this point must be adhered to by the applicant for the full duration of the scheme, which is currently proposed at 4 years, renewable annually. It is therefore not possible to changes actions once chosen. Payment is €10 per eligible ewe and the scheme will run for 4 years. Payments are based on the completion of both chosen actions. Failure to complete one or both actions will result in reduced payments and penalties. After each year the farmer will be asked whether he wishes to continue for another year in the scheme, or to withdraw (without clawback if all actions completed etc). The eligible number of ewes is the average number of breeding ewes you held in 2014 and 2015 as de-
clared on your Sheep census. This is known as the Reference Number. This figure should be available to you from your own records in your Sheep Log book. The Department will confirm your Reference Number after all applications have been received. In certain circumstances this reference number can differ from the 2014/15 average where a higher number is required under a GLAS commonage management plan or where the 2016 census shows a lower number than the reference year. If you did not submit a Sheep Census in 2014 or 2015 you must write to the Sheep Welfare Scheme section and explain why the census was not submitted and any supporting documentation you may have that will support your case. Every case will be looked at on its own merit and all circumstances will be taken into account. However, it must be noted that a cross compliance penalty may apply. The scheme is currently proposed at 4 years, renewably annually and as with all EU funded schemes, an inspection process will be in place including on site verification of animal numbers and inspection of record book and documents to confirm actions are carried out. A Better Way to get Better! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It’s that time of year when many of us are either in the midst of illness or languishing in its aftermath. Body aches, low energy levels, reduced appetite and a heavy head are some of the symptoms people experience post-illness. Whether it is a serious illness that involved harsh treatment or a viral attack such as the common cold and flu, nutrition plays a crucial role in your recovery. Poor nutrition during this time may hinder the repair and rejuvenation of the body and makes recovery a long, arduous road. Obviously, patients’ needs differ greatly depending on age, the illness and treatment received but there are some basic tips that apply to most of us during convalescence. The aim of convalescent nutrition is to maximize nutrient-rich eating with minimum digestive effort. As much of our immune process is played out in the gut, the digestive tract can bear much of the brunt from any attack. Also, treatments such as antibiotics, steroids, chemotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs can disrupt normal digestive function. Therefore, it is important to keep food light, nutritious and easy to digest and make sure it offers an optimum supply of calories and nutrients for recovery and repair. Avoid warmed-up leftovers and pre-cooked frozen meals as these are less nutritious and carry a greater risk of bacterial contamination - the convalescents’ immunity is already impaired and they may not ward off another infection as efficiently as a healthy person. Red meat, fried or fatty foods are also a no-no. They are difficult to digest and use up vital energy to process through the digestive system - energy that would otherwise be available to the repair process. Sugar, sugary drinks and snacks are also off the menu during illness and recovery. Just a teaspoon of sugar can suppress the immune system by 50% for up to four hours after ingestion. Sugar interferes with the transport of vitamin C into cells - possibly the most important nutrient in all aspects of immunity. Sugar reduces the production of protective antibodies. Sugar causes mineral imbalances and neutralizes the action of essential fatty acids making our cells more vulnerable to attack from viruses, bacteria and other invaders. You will not be doing any favours by placing fizzy drinks and hard boiled sweets at any patient’s bedside locker! Best foods for recovery are made from fresh produce - fruit, vegetables and some wholegrains. Protein, necessary for rebuilding and repair of cells is best sourced from white fish, organic poultry and vegetables, beans and legumes. Red meat and pork products are not recommended as part of a recovery diet. However, bones from organic beef, chicken or lamb offer great support through minerals and can add extra nutrients and flavour to broths, soups and vegetable dishes. If you feel that you require extra protein during this time use energy-rich digestible whey protein powder or hemp protein powder to increase protein intake. These powders can be added to cereal, smoothies, juices and soups and boost B vitamins and protein when appetite is low. Another valuable source of B vitamins include yeast extracts available in health food shops and some supermarkets. These can be added to warm drinks or soups with added chilli, ginger and garlic for extra oomph! Our bodies use up a great amount of B vitamins during stress and illness. We do not store B- vitamins so they are needed on a daily basis for energy, immunity and recovery. Meeting this demand may be tough when we are ill or recovering and may warrant a boost through Vitamin B-rich foods, supplements and/or reputable yeast extracts. Wholegrains offer the best plant-based supply of B vitamins especially buckwheat, oats, brown rice, amaranth and quinoa. During illness and recovery these grains are best soaked for 24-48 hours before cook-

ing. No single food has all B vitamins in rich supply so eating a variety of grains and vegetables will help to ensure a good supply. Vitamin C foods are also a must during and to prevent illness. Raw, fresh fruit offer a good supply – choose thick-skinned raw fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapple and melon as they are protected from bacteria and viruses by their skin. Lightly steamed green vegetables also provide vitamin C. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha are among the most nutritious and digestible foods available and are a natural source of good bacteria (probiotics) essential for immune function. Useful supplements to use during recovery include B-complex vitamins, vitamin C vitamin D3, zinc and good quality probiotics. Warm drinks as herbal teas - echinacea, fenugreek, ginger, tulsi (holy basil), chamomile, thyme and green tea are all good tonics for recovery. Finally, meals are best served small and appealing to the eye to encourage appetite during an illness. In Victorian times, a patient’s meal was beautifully presented on dainty crockery along with a posy of flowers. Psychologically, most of us respond well from feeling loved and cared for during illness, particularly young children and the elderly. If you are caring for someone who is sick, be sure to keep them company while he/she eats. It is often difficult to dine alone, but particularly so when you are not feeling well. Being ill can take its toll on both mental and physical health - but good food, good company and a good giggle may well be the best medicine of all! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Wednesday, January 14, 1987. Some snow fell during the night but not enough to build a snowman - it’s more like white sand than snow. The Convent schools are to be closed for the next two days because of the weather but no word on the CBS yet. Spent most of the day in the bog cutting down old trees and sawing them up before bagging them. It was bitterly cold all day There was plenty of wildlife for company; duck, snipe, curlew, finches and arctic thrushes that always comes when there’s snow. It’s very hard for birds in this weather with the earth frozen solid and even the food we put out for the garden birds freezes in no time. Some people come ‘torching’ down the road here at night - it’s easy to catch birds and cage them in very cold weather.
Thursday, January 15. The CBS primary was open this morning but only long enough to tell students to go home. It’s not as cold today and we may see a bit of a thaw setting in. Spent a few hours cutting and bagging wood in the bog. Borrowed Tom Sheehy’s old Massey Ferguson and hitched on the car trailer. Brought up over 20 bags of wood and stored them in the garage. One of New York’s top gangsters, known as Fat Tony Salerno, was sentenced to 100 years in prison this week. He’s 75 years old.
Saturday, January 17. The thaw has set in with a vengeance no frost but wet and mild as if the cold weather had never happened. However, the aftermath is being felt in some homes and buildings in Dingle and a lot of damage has been reported due to burst water pipes, especially in Benners Hotel and the Convent. Russia continues to wage war in Afghanistan but observers believe they will never win there.
Sunday, January 18. Weather is dull and misty but mild in contrast to last week’s sub-zero days. A ship carrying iron bars sank in the Med some 70 miles east of Barcelona and 18 of her crew of 20 are missing. She was registered in Malta.

Monday, January 19. Rain and mist all day but very mild also. Began art classes at the CBS tonight. There was only one other ‘pupil’ so if there aren’t more than 10 next week the classes will be discontinued.
spray in the Dún Síon canoe. I suppose I’ll have to get the book now - vanity!
Sunday, January 25. The dry spell continues but cloudy and cool. Took the kids to 11am Mass where it was announced that lay people are to be involved in distributing Communion soon. The names of suitable people were requested. What’s a ‘suitable’ person and who will be the judge?
Tuesday, January 20. At long last the Government has gone. Labour Party leader and Tánaiste Dick Spring and three of his Cabinet colleagues refused to support the proposed Budget cuts and have withdrawn support from the coalition. So, Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald had no option but to go to the country. February 17 will be polling day and the new Dáil will meet one week before Easter which means a third of the year will pass without stable government. Charlie Haughey will be under pressure to win an overall majority for Fianna Fáil but that won’t be easy after some of the party’s key people deserted to form the Progressive Democrats party two years ago. The Archbishop of Canterbury sent a special envoy, Terry Waite, to Lebanon to secure the release of some kidnapped hostages but Waite has also been kidnapped it seems.
Wednesday, January 21. Started a carpentry course in the CBS this evening but the introduction was not very encouraging. It was disorganised and under equipped.
Thursday, January 22. There was an amazing and shocking incident in America where a politician, R. Budd Dwyer, pulled out a gun and shot himself during a press conference. He had been found guilty on bribery charges and was due to be sentenced tomorrow.
Saturday, January 24. There’s a photo in the Irish Times supplement today which is taken from a new book, Ireland beyond the Pale . The photo was taken at the All-Ireland Currach Championships in Spiddal in 1985 and shows Mike Walsh and myself in close-up as we strain against the oars and flying

Seville Orange Recipes: Marmalade and Orange Crème Caramel Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School
in two and make the other batch the following week. Place a plate on top of the fruit to keep them submerged. Simmer this for about 3 hours to allow the fruit to soften. Following this, allow the pot and fruit to cool enough to remove the fruit, you can leave overnight if you want, but make sure to keep the liquid. For the next step remove the whole fruit and cut them in half and scoop out the flesh and put into the liquid which was used to cook the fruit. Slice the orange peel finely and put the peel along with the pips into a muslin cloth or a clean pillow case. At this stage put everything into the pot including the muslin cloth tied at the top and bring to the boil. Allow this to simmer until it has reduced to about one third.
Normally we associate autumn time for making jams or preserves when most fruit is at its best. However one exception is marmalade, which is made from Seville oranges. They are in season this time of the year, for a very short time. The good news however is that you have still about one week or so to get them at your local greengrocer. While most recipes for Seville Oranges will lead you to marmalade, there are plenty of other options where the bitterness of these oranges will enhance a dish. They always work well where a dish is very rich such as roast duck (think of the classical French dish Duck à l’Orange). Even using a spoonful as a glaze over duck breasts before you add them to the oven will really cut through the fat from the duck. It is a simple thing to make it just takes a little time with very little work but the best thing is you will be rewarded with a beautiful marmalade for your breakfast every morning. If you have fallen out of love with a homemade bitter marmalade for breakfast it is worth giving it a go. If you don’t cherish the idea of having it for breakfast you can also add it to desserts especially if you have dark chocolate or cream in the dessert. I also have included an easy recipe for a Seville Orange Crème Caramel for you to make as a Sunday treat.
Next, warm the sugar in a bowl in the oven for about five minutes (this will help to speed up the process of setting the marmalade). You can add the sugar stirring continuously - you can add the sugar in two or three stages allowing it to dissolve totally before adding the next. Once the sugar has totally dissolved bring the pot to a fast boil. Keep it boiling until it reaches setting point. An easy way to determine this is to have a couple of cold saucers in the fridge and simply pour a little on the saucer and place into the fridge and leave for a few minutes. Check this after a few minutes by pulling your finger along it and if wrinkles come on it easily then it’s ready or if you want the marmalade thicker just leave to boil longer
Grease 6-8 ramekins or dariole moulds. First make the caramel, in a food processor add the sugar and the zest. Pulse this for a few times. Next put the sugar and zest in a pot and place over medium heat. Carefully heat until it turns a golden caramel colour, remove from heat and add water, allow the sugar and water to bubble for a few seconds and mix together. Immediately pour the caramel evenly into the ramekin or moulds. You should be aiming to have a little layer of caramel in each mould. Once you leave these to cool for a few minutes the mixture will harden. This is what you want for the next step. Next make the custard. Preheat the oven to 150ºC. Add the vanilla, zest and juice to the milk and bring to the boil. In a large bowl beat the eggs and egg yolks with the sugar, pour over the boiling milk and pass this through a sieve. Add the custard mixture to the hardened caramel within the moulds. Put the moulds on a tray and add water to the tray to come up to a little over half way up the moulds. Put this in the oven for about 25 minutes or until a knife comes out clean. Allow to cool. To serve, place the moulds in warm water to soften the contents slightly and then turn them out on to a plate or shallow bowl. Enjoy!!!
Once ready, pour the marmalade into hot sterilised jars (simply put them and lids in an oven at 180º for about 10 minutes, remember to do this with all utensils used such as the ladle jug etc.) Fill them almost to the top, put the lid on tightly and turn upside down and allow to cool.

Are you Heavy on the Belly? Are you worried about diabetes? Getting rid of your belly fat is important for more than vanity’s sake. Excess abdominal fat the kind that surrounds organs and puffs out your stomach –maybe a predictor of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and some cancers including breast. Another reason could be that you are (unknowingly) eating foods that raise your insulin levels on a near continuous basis. This insulin, a hormone instructs your body to store fat and although you may be exercising, frustratingly you cannot lose the weight. Also chronically high insulin is damaging to the body. However simple dietary changes that reduce insulin can switch your body to now burn fat in a fast and easy way. You will no longer be heavy on the belly, but more importantly you will also be obliterating a staggering number of risk factors for the chronic illnesses that plague our society today and are crippling our health system such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and all variations of inflammatory conditions. However the good news is that the signs of this damage can be evident a long time before diabetes is diagnosed; early detection and prevention is the focus of the Heavy on the Belly Program.
How can I do this program? 1.Book a consultation (Milltown/Dingle), attend a workshop or enquire about hosting a workshop for you and your friends! To make a booking or for further information call Erina on 087 2740788, email info@erinamacsweeney.com. Visit www.heavyonthebelly.com

After a busy week with all three projects gaining much attention at the exhibition by teachers, parents, the media, college academics, industry representatives, ministers, TD's and even President Michael D Higgins the three students were all set for the awards ceremony on Friday night. This was held in the main hall of the RDS with 3,000 people in attendance and 'live' streamed on the BTYSTE facebook page. The anticipation was immense and the atmosphere was well choreographed by the BT 'Red Coats' who looked after the students all week. Hearing Jack Nagles' name being called out by the presenters for the ABP Food Group Farm Safety Award 2017 and 300 people applaud him as he took to the stage put the hair standing on the necks of his supporters in the arena and those tuned in on the 'live' stream in Killorglin and all over. Jack took to the stage and was presented with his glass trophy which will take pride of place forever more. This was a great honour for Jack as he was the only Kerry student to take to the stage for the 2017 Awards Ceremony as its only the top 120 awards that are presented during the ceremony on the night. Jack also received a special display award, as did Natasha Myers for their excellent displays and presentation to the judges and the public. As well as appearing on TV3's Ireland AM and Vincent Brownes' shows, RTE's News slots and many radio stations Killorglin Community College students received special VIP private visits from President Michael D Higgins, British Ambassador to Ireland Mr. Robin Barnett and Minister of State for Employment and Small Business Pat Breen. Staff, students, parents and the wider community are very proud of Jack, Natasha and Timothy for what they have achieved for themselves and the school.

The Nature of Joe & the Nurture of Enda Colin Sheeran
The wife is Enda McNulty. She is for nurture. She is for science, process and measurable performance improvement. She is for consistency and work ethic. She is for flash cards, repeated behaviour guiding future response. She feels what we do as parents is paramount to the kids’ development. The coach must impart the blueprint. There is a plan. It is an overt process. There are steps and stages, measurables and milestones. Progress is as linear as it is vital.
ANNUAL 31 CARD DRIVE
It’s the modern way and it assumes the children must be taught every little thing and says the way they’re taught affects the selves they will become.
€520 CASH PRIZE
Myself and my wife were at it again this week. We are so like Enda McNulty and Joe Brolly, sometimes it scares me.
I never saw myself in this light before but I’m Joe Brolly. I’m for nature. For natural talent, ability and artistry. It’s internal, it’s intrinsic. There’s things like osmosis and just knowing where to pass the ball to. Hunches. Talent. There’s a bit of pretending but there isn’t really a plan. I think the personality and style is already there. It’s revealing itself as we go along. We are not building the personality. There’s a bit more romance to this approach and as a parent you can relax a little. You can take the modern, the tyranny of perfection, and you can see a little wriggle room for yourself. I mean if things are going to turn out the way they’re going to turn out, how long do we need to discuss that piece of broccoli? Me and the missus keep the debates indoors. Enda and Joe are public men. They represent wildly differing approaches to coaching. Joe is worried the current scientific approach is going to paint the artistry out of our games. First it will take the fun. Then it will take the skills. It will close every big mouth. It will sink every show boat. It’ll paint all the walls magnolia, solid, dependable, practical, repeatable, magnolia. And the players will suffer. No swagger, no swashbuckle, boring galley slaves rowing to the beat of the coaches system.

And what of Enda? Well he wants to empower people. He believes greatness is not ordained, it is achieved. That regardless of my present, it is still there for me in the future if I can just put things in the right order. It can be learnt. If you’re having a bad day or if you’re not making the team I know who I would rather hear from. If my and Joe’s talent boat has sailed, I want to hear about an alternative mode of transport. So who is right? What of the soul of our national games and the hearts and minds of our impressionable youth? Well in our house it is simple. I coach the forwards and my wife coaches the backs. I coach the attack and my wife coaches the defence.

Beachairi Chorca Dhuibhne Celebration of St Gobnait and St Valentine. To celebrate St Gobnait and St Valentine both patron saints of our beloved bees. Beachairi Chorca Dhuibhne are hosting a social evening on the 8th of February at the Beehive Theatre in Dingle at 8 o clock. More Than Honey .... A documentary on bees will be shown on the night. This isn’t just a pretty nature documentary: it’s a grim warning. The world’s bee population is sharply declining, and the consequences are potentially grim. Einstein reportedly remarked that if bees died out, mankind would not survive more than four years. Imhoof takes that quote at face value and spells it out in detail: without bees, a huge percentage of flowers and trees would become extinct because they rely on bee pollination; so does up to a third of what we
humans eat. "Even if you have no interest in bees I would recommend going to see this film. It’s entertaining simply from a character-based perspective, as well as being visually magnificent. I promise that you won’t see bees in the same way afterwards" - Scientific America
will be available afterwards to anyone that may have an interest in beekeeping or even supporting the bees in your own garden and environment . We can all play our part you don't have to keep bees to make a difference. You are all most warmly invited to attend. If you wanna inquire further, give Juli a buzz on 086-8337733

Camp Juniors FC 2017 And Going Strong!! It has been a great first half to the season for CAMP JUNIORS with a record numbers of players and coaches now involved with the club. Three teams chasing titles in their respective divisions, a superb club calendar has been launched, and fantastic support from sponsors right across the age groups has the club looking good, playing well and planning big! ACADEMY Here we have seen the real growth in numbers this season with soccer crazed kids (boys and girls) aged 7-10yrs training every Saturday morning from 10am – 2pm. With these children come parents and a whole new generation of club coaches. Strict club policy requires all coaches to be Garda vetted, Child Welfare Certified and all involved with FAI Kickstart 1 & 2 training courses. The 10s and 9s have been involved in mini-matches on a regular basis with teams from MEK Utd, Dingle Bay Rovers, Listowel Celtic, St Brendan’s Park and Tralee Dynamos all having visited the Sportsfield.
strong squad bolstered by several U14 players, with the Costello boys (Adam and David) being in impressive form every match. If they can keep players free of injuries Mike Lyne and Joe Shannon, team managers, will be looking to add another title to their impressive list of titles. U16s Chasing Titles Yet another club side sitting at the top of Division 1. Played 7, 4 wins 2 draws and one defeat to Killatrney Athletic. A very strong division with 3 or 4 teams chasing down the top spot there will be no room for points dropped if coaches Barrie O Brien and Seamus O Hara want to add another title to the clubs honours list. Impressive this season have been Owen Kennedy, (Castlehgregory), in goals, Cathal Fitzgibbon, (Derrymore), and Killian Falvey, (Annascaul), in the centre midfield role. Killian was also played for the Kerry U16 team in the Inter-League National competition. New Sponsors The JUNIORS would like to extend a great

11s & 12s Big step up for the 12s this season as having won the prelim. grouping they are finding the going tough in Division 1. But with great training under Tim Goldman and Micko Horan these lads are improving week on week with Jason Casey (Camp) and Paudie Fitzgerald (Fermoyle) being the standouts. The 11s playing in a non-competitive league have held their own well against Dynamos, Iveragh and LB Rovers. Girls Soccer Returns To Camp This has to be one of the highlights this season to have CAMP JUNIORS lining out in the U12 girls league. A great mix of players drawn from right across the peninsula (Keel to Cloghane and back to Blennerville), the girls have played 3 matches to date against the established clubs of Listowel, Killarney Celtic and Kenamre. We have had some great performances, improving each week. Always looking for more girls to get involved (Training Monday nights, 6-7.30pm)
The Camp Juniors U12 squad in their new training tops
The 14’s In The Running Not often that CAMP JUNIORS would sit in top spot of the Premier division at any age group but our 14s have had a great 1st half this season despite dropping points in a 0-0 draw last weekend in Mastergeeha. A critical games next weekend against Killorgan FC could see these boys really challenge for silverware. Impressive all season has been Cian Wright (Lispole) in midfield and Aodhán O Connor (Dingle) in defence. Congrats also to the players who are part of the U14 County squad looking to get onto the Kennedy Cup panel when announced in February. U15s In Pole Position Having won the division 2 title last season the JUNIORS U15s are leading the pack in Division 1 this year with an impressive 4 wins, 2 draws, 1 defeat to date and it looks like they will be battling with Ballyhar FC and Park B for the title come March. News from Camphill Community Dingle Christoph Jensen Before reporting on events in our community we want to apologise to all of our faithful friends for not having issued our annual newsletter and thank-yous. It was the first time in our twelve year history that we failed to communicate with friends and supporters, with families and donors in this special time of the year. Without wanting to make any cheap excuses this omission was linked to the dramatic changes that happened in our small community: the moves from Lisdorgan and Dolphin House into Tearmann an tSolais which is now occupied to capacity. Some of us coworkers moved into the houses of Cois Chnoic, where the foundations are being laid for a community life until such time that also these house are registered for occupancy by residents, like Tearmann an tSolais. In anticipation of the moves we were joined by new support workers and a young co-worker from Columbia: Thomas, Kelly, Eleanor, Mark and Pedro. Welcome to the team, all of you. The moving out of Lisdorgan and Dolphin House just before Christmas amidst rehearsals for the Christmas Plays was breathtaking to say the least. In both houses we gathered one last time to thank the structures in those houses for giving us shelter and protection, structures that were filled with the joys and struggles of our daily existence. The performance of the Paradise Play and the Shepherd’s Play in the Lab was as much a serious as well as a joyous occasion, a real celebration of collaboration of all the residents and the new and old co-workers involved in Camphill Dingle. We have to thank Tonnie and Cornelia for their encouragement and stamina in sustaining our enthusiasm amidst the moves. The plays were performed to a capacity audience in the Lab Theatre. Thank you all for attending ... it means a lot to us.
and guidance of it’s many god-parents and friends when entering the turbulences of its teen-age years. We want to thank all those neighbours in Lisdorgan and Beenbawn for their support and companionship in the years of our stay there. You made us feel welcome and part of your community – and apologise once more for not sending out the annual news-letter. I cannot overemphasize enough how much Camphill Dingle is embedded in the warmth and good-will of the local community. This came to light again at the handing over of the donations for Camphill Community Dingle received by the blue and white wren. Uta Jensen, Annemarie Moriarty and Christoph Jensen attended the celebration in The Barrack Heights Pub. Thank you to Sraid Eoin Wren for your gift ... much appreciated. Who knows, you may have another piper in your band for the 2017 Wren’s Day ... As we enter 2017 we seem to be confronted with ever-hardening attitudes resulting in ever more conflicts and wars. Often this hardening of attitudes is the result of fears, vested interests, stresses and a seeming lack of time to come to peace. I don’t pretend to have the answers to these challenges, but have been sustained in my endeavour of community life with the vulnerable and those with special needs by the words of the late violinist and philosopher Yehudi Menuhin: “Each human being has the eternal duty of turning what is hard and brutal into a tender and subtle offering, what is crude into an object of refinement, what is ugly into a thing of beauty, confrontation into collaboration, ignorance into knowledge, hereby rediscovering the child's dream of a creative reality incessantly renewed by death, the servant of life, and by life the servant of love. “
The twelve Holy Nights were filled with our efforts to fill the new house, Tearmann an tSolais, with Camphill-life by singing, the daily lighting of the Christmas tree, by socialising and community meals. We turned to the events of the last year and its dramatic ending. The Holy Nights were rounded off on the day of Epiphany with a Three Kings celebration and the carrying out of the Christmas Tree. The requirements for registration also resulted in changed management structures and handing over of responsibilities. All this was coupled with the sad news of Betsie Konink’s and the Kudiabor-family’s leaving in the near future. They played and still play such an important part in the destiny in the building up of this community. All of us are contemplating of how to fill the big holes that they leave behind: in our social endeavours, in our work-life and in our cultural activities. However we pray and hope that they will stay in the vicinity of Dingle and thereby remain associated with the wider community of Dingle town and Camphill in particular. The community, now in it’s 13th year will need the continued warmth

Students achieve Bronze Medal Gaisce Awards in Castlegregory.

Adam, Natalia & Hugi K. from Annascaul left their calling card in Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia on a recent visit.
Enjoy life, prepare well, value your achievements however small, was the simple message from Mike O' Shea, explorer, at a talk given to students at Meánscoil Nua an Leithtriuigh on Friday last. Mike presented Gaisce Awards to seven students who challenged themselves in several disciplines over a six month period. Mike himself was one of the first in Ireland to achieve a Gold Medal Gaisce Award in the early 1990s. Since then he has gone on to complete several expeditions worldwide to far off places from frozen Lake Baikal in Northern Russia, the Northern Patagonian Ice Cap in Chile and a very treacherous attempt to reach the North Pole. “The Ice Project” is an attempt by Mike and Cork woman Clare O' Leary to walk across the major ice caps of the world. They have endured temperatures as low as minus 55 degrees and howling snow storms. All these expeditions required huge preparation and resilience and Mike's sense of adventure and achievement greatly impacted on all students in Castlegregory.

Breandán Mac Gearailt Bliain nua agus ainneoin na haimsire tá cluichí caide agus iomána á n-imirt go forleathan. Gan amhras déarfar agus ‘sí an fhírinne gur ag tabhairt seans do imreoirí eile atátar sna cluichí caide agus iomána, féachaint an bhfuile aon tseod nó seoda sa chontae i ngan fhios. Ach feach mar seo ar chúrsaí. Má tá imreoir maith caide agat atá sna mionúir, gach seans go bhféadfadh sé sin a bheith ar fhóirenn fe 21 bliain. Tamall beag eile d’fhéadfadh go mbeadh sé ar an mbóthar dtí na sinsir. San am cheana tá na cluichí contae agus réigiúnach ag braith ortha. Tá an sraith chomórtas agus tá cluící idir insitúití triú leibhéal. Mar sin is féidir misneach dhuine a bhriseash ag an tsíor imirt. Chuige seo atáim. Is deas a chlos go bhfuil CLG anois ag féachaint ar conas cúrsaí a fheabhsú do imreoirí. Is minic i rith an tsamhraidh go mbeadh seachtainí fada ag na sinsir agus in go leor cásanna bíonn turmiosc/cosc ar na himreóirí imirt dá gclub. Ná fuil sé in am an ealaíon seo a stop agus má tá am ann réitíodh siad an fhadhb. Bíodh a saesúr ag na comórtaisí craoibhe agus dos na cluichí club agus réigiúin. Ní gá aon fhotharga ar fad ach a gcúinne féin ag gach dream sinsir, mionúir soisir fé 21 bl. sóisir agus na cluichí ceantair agus clubanna an chontae. Sean go bhféadfai cuid acu seo a thanú ach i láthair na huaire ba fheabhas aon iarracht ar an ndian shaothar a curtear ar imreoirí maithe. Is cuimhin lion a chlos go raibh sár imreoir ar m’eolas a chaith tamall ag imirt trí chluiche+ caide sa tseachtain. Ná fuil sé in am crot na céille a bheith ar chluichí CLG go mbíonn scata againn ag tacú leo. Trump Tá Daniel Trump ina uachtarán ar na Stáit Aontaithe agus go dtí seo ba shás cleachtan agus magaidh scata dá raibh á rá aige. Caithfidh an córas atá i saol phoiliteóirí na Stát Aontaithe gur iad féin slánathóirí na Cruinne stop. Is baolach ná fuil i gceist acu ach féachaint chuige gur iad féin a déarfaidh cad tá ceart agus mí-cheart. Mar shampla thugadar tacaíocht do lucht an fhreasúra san Ucráin. Bhí an fear a bhí i gceannas tofa go donlathach, ach tháinig cuid don bhfeasúra agus comhairle na Stát agus chabhraigh siad an ceannaire a bhí tofa a chur an bóthar amach. Sa tSíria bhí an scéal céanna. Beo leis an bhfreasúra agus iad ag iarraidh an t-Uachtarán a bhí tofa a chur as oifig le neart gunnaí. Ní fada go raibh na Stáit Aontuithe ag tacú leis an bhfreasúra dream a bhí gairid go maith do ISIS, na búistéirí is déanaí atá níos measa seacht n-uaire ná an Taliban. Nilim ag iarraidh a thabhairt le tuiscint go mba Naoimh na daoine a bhí tofa go daonlathach. Nách bhfuil sé in am ag na Stáit Aontaithe aire a thabhairt dá dtír féin mar le blianta níl ach achrann ar achrann agus botún ar bhotún déanta acu go hidirnáisiúnta. Goileann se seo ar Ghael mar go bhfuil na mílte míle Éireannach an- bhuíoch dos na Stáit agus gaol gairid againn go léir le Gaeil Mheiriceánacha Mheiricá. Tá an ciníochas níos measa ná riamh i Meirceá tréis ocht bliana Bharrac Obama ar an stiúir. Tá daoine don dtuairim gur in olcas atá cúrsí le bheith fé Trump. Tá súil againn nách amhlaidh a bheidh. Tá an breac ar an bport ag Tump agus caithfidh sé rialú agus súil againn ná beidh sé ag bagairt cogaidh ach go gclaíofaidh sé le cuid dos na geallúintí fónta atá caite aige chugainn imeasc gaoth mhór gan fód. D’fhéadfach sé filí chaocha a dheanam do mhórán, ach is maith an scéalaí an aimsir. Rud nach mór a thuiscint gur cogaíocht atá scata dos na Poblachtánaigh ag bagairt agus cuid dos na Daonlalthaigh. Níl ach bascadh agus marú i mbéal na bPoblachtánaigh agus fós ní thuigeann siad gur praiseach atá déanta acu do gach cor a dheineadar in Meiriceá Theas, sa mheán Oirthear, sa chian Oirthear i.e Vietnam agus ansan san Afganastáin An Iráic agua an tSíría. Leabhra Bhíos ag caint leis an bhfear éachtach Risteárd Mac Annraoi le déanaí. Níl aon áireamh ar a bhfuil do leabhra curtha ar an margadh aige agus é réidh le cur leó. Lé déanaí chuir sé i gcló aistí do chuid Sheáin Uí Ormholtaigh a bhunaigh agus a bhí ina phríomh oide ar Ard-scoil Hamilton i nDroichead na Bandan. Ba in aice an Fhearainn Fhuar a saolaíodh é.
Is mac dó ‘sea Pádraig a chaitheann scata dá shaoire i nDún Chaoin. Tá Pádraig ard scoláire, sean- bhaistithe mar Thiarna Shiabh an Iolair air. Is leabhar deas é seo. Roimh deire an míosa seo bheidh leabhar eile againn ó Risteárd fén bhfear cleachtan agus Gaolainne, Seán Tóibín athair Niall Tóibín. Mairg a bheadh gan cóip don dá leabhar seo, fé bheirt Chorcaíodh, gur fiú trácht ortha. Teilifís Ní raibh aon deallramh leis na maslaí a tugadh ar an ‘Late Late Show’,do Chríostaithe go mór mhór Caitilicigh lé déanaí. Dá dtárlódh a leithéid i dtíortha eile bheadh raic idirnáisiúnta agus pian an bháis nó príosún fada mar thoradh, nó á bhagairt Creidim go docht, cead cainte bheith ag daoine, ach measaim go bhfuil an sort seo cainte chomh maslathach go mba cheart deileáil leis mar is ceart. Foot Pronation and Supination Explained Eddie O’ Grady Pronation and supination are movements that occur at the subtalar joint of the foot. The normal biomechanics of the foot are designed to absorb and direct the force occurring throughout the gait cycle. As the foot is loaded, eversion of the subtalar joint, dorsiflextion of the ankle, and abduction of the forefoot occur. This is the pronation part of the gait cycle. Pronation should not continue past the latter stages of midstance during the gait cycle. At this stage the foot should then supinate in preparation for toe-off. Approximately four degrees of pronation and supination are necessary to enable the foot to propel forward properly. Any increase on this four degrees brings a foot into over-
supination or over-pronation. Pronation Pronation of the foot is where the heel rotates away, and the little toe moves away, from the centre of the body. The foot also dorsiflexes up slightly, the ankle rolling inwards. Pronation is part of the natural movement of the human body but certain injuries can occur with excessive pronation. Runners with flat feet often overpronate. Over-pronation can contribute to injuries such as shin splints, anterior compartment syndrome, patello-femoral pain syndrome, plantar fasciitis. tarsal tunnel syndrome. bunions (hallux valgus), Achilles tendonopathies. The running shoes of over-pronators of34 West Kerry Live
ten show extra wear on the inside of the heel and the ball of the foot extending to the big toe.
Properly prescribed foot orthotics can be beneficial in the treatment of over-pronation or oversupination where these conditions are leading to injury during training etc. Supination With supination the heel rotates towards the centre of the body, the big toe turns towards the centre of the body, the foot flexes down and the ankle rolls out. It is the opposite of pronation. A natural amount of supination occurs during the push-off phase of the running gait as the heel lifts off the ground and the forefoot and toes are used to propel the body forward. However, excessive supination places a large strain on the muscles and tendons that stabilize the ankle, and can make an oversupinator more prone to ankle sprain or ankle ligament rupture. With over-supination forces of impact on the foot are concentrated on a smaller area of the foot (the outside part), and are not distributed as efficiently. In the push-off phase, most of the work is done by the smaller toes on the outside of the foot, rather than the big toe. This places extra stress on the foot, which can lead to conditions such as iliotibial band syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, or plantar fasciitis. Oversupination causes the outer edge of running shoes to wear sooner. In extreme cases, there will be holes in the uppers where the runner’s foot has broken through. Runners with high arches and tight Achilles tendons/calves tend to be over-supinators.

Killorglin Panto Killorglin's 54th pantomime,'Robin Hood' is undergoing last minute preparations for its Gala opening in the CYMS on Saturday 21st January. Rehearsals began in October, and again the enthusiasm in this Group is obvious from the large numbers who have been in attendance. Musical Director, Martin Hurley, has included over 20 musical items, which include everything from up to the minute hits to old favourites and even a glimpse of classical opera!! In a role reversal this year, last year's 'Baddie' ,Steven Mills, plays the hero Robin Hood, whilst last year's hero, Jack Healy, plays the evil Prince John. The glamourous Maid Marian, is played by Danielle O’Riordan, who returns to the Group after a few years absence. Speaking of glamour, the role of the Dame is once again played by Declan Mangan, for the 54th time! His wife Anne is the ever inspired costumier, and apparently Declan's second half costume has the X and Wow Factor all rolled into one! Aidan and Colm Clifford (no relations--only through laughs) are the traditional panto fools, with grand titles, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Deputy Dag of Dagenham. The story line also included hilarious episodes with the Babes in the Wood, Bonnie (Renee Kavanagh) and Clyde (Shona Murphy); a visit to a Monastery where we meet Friar Tuck (Kevin Moriarty) and Brother Littlejohn (Sean Joy) and Rev . Mother, Lisa Corkery; a Royal Proclamation from King Richard (Mervyn Clifford),a confused Merlin the Magician (John McGeever) and a romantic involvement with Will Scarlett (Chris Brennan) and impressive newcomer Bronagh Murphy as Helen a Dale. The much acclaimed, Killorglin Kutest Kiddies will merit much applause when they meet the Babes deep in the Woods. Choreographer is Jackie O Mahony of Tralee, Stage Manager is David Pigott and Lighting is supervised for over the 40th time , by Eamonn Looney. A word of concern. In recent years production costs have spiralled and box office receipts have fallen. The panto in the past have given huge sums of money to St.Joseph's Home Killorglin, but sadly the shows in 2015 and 2016 ran at a loss. This cannot continue, so people of Kerry in general and Killorglin in particular, if you want to see this great Killorglin Panto tradition survive, please come out and support Robin Hood. The Group do not run a Patrons' List and rely solely on audience receipts for funding. Do you want to see a 55th Killorglin Panto---if the answer is 'Oh yes we do' then book and seat and support live local entertainment. Matinee shows on Sat 21st , Sun 22nd and Sun 29th January. Nightly shows from Wed 25th Jan to Sat 28th January at the CYMS hall. Booking office open from Monday January 9th at the CYMS hall. Tel: 066 9790961 We will also be one performance in the INEC Killarney on Sun February 5th@ 5pm. Tickets from Ticketmaster or by contacting the Panto Booking Office. West Kerry Live 35
Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Nollag Na mBan On Friday 6th January, it was time for the women to put their feet up ! Camp Restaurants were very busy and this year the local ICA guild celebrated in Ashes Bar and Restaurant enjoying a beautiful meal and joining over 60 other ladies who too were out celebrating Nollag na mBan. Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to
€5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx Claire O Brien, Upper Camp with her 105 year old grandmother Bridget McCormack, €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of ena system pay for itself in 5 to 10 years. still hail and harty and living on her own in her ergy, home in can Fermanagh.

Spring and protecting the farm and home St. Brigid promised fine weather from her feast day onwards. Spring, the season of hope and new life, brought better weather, longer days. With it came new life on the farm and new growth on the land. On St. Brigid’s Eve, a festive meal of potatoes and butter was eaten and all of the family made special crosses in honour of the saint. They sought St. Brigid’s protection for the fertility of the household, farm and land and to safeguard them from illness and disease. In parts of Connacht, people would carry a large straw belt (a Crios Bríde) through which the inhabitants passed while saying a prayer to St. Brigid, in the hope of gaining the saint’s protection from illness during the coming year. Throughout Ireland, there are many holy wells dedicated to St. Brigid and it was traditional to visit these either the evening before or on her feast day. Water obtained at this time, was believed to be particularly blessed. Sometimes a piece of cloth or ribbon (Brat Bríde or Ribín Bríde) was left outside on the windowsill or near the door for the night. It was believed it would be touched by St. Brigid on her travels and thus be endowed with the power to ward off illness and pain in both humans and animals. For the coming year, it was kept safely and used for healing, or incorporated into clothing so as to offer protection to the wearer. In many of parts of Ireland ‘Biddy Boys’ (or girls) went from house to house with ‘Biddy’, an effigy of the saint, often a straw doll, collecting money and food for a party in her honour while reciting a rhyme similar to this one: Here is Brigid dressed in white.

Give her a penny for this dark night. For God’s sake, give her some. St. Brigid’s Crosses The St. Brigid’s Cross, pinned up above the front door or in the kitchen, is still a familiar feature in many Irish homes. The making of crosses - in a variety of styles - biddy-boys, brídeoga and visiting holy wells are all traditionally associated with the celebration of the feast of St. Brigid. Crosses were hung up in homes and animal sheds and then leftover straw was often sprinkled on the crops or incorporated into spancels or bedding for animals so as to invoke the saint’s blessing as she passed through the country on the eve of her feastday. It was common to give a St. Brigid’s Cross as a gift to those with a new home, and to newlyweds, so as offer protection and to wish the couple well in starting a family. The Housing Assistance Payment Question: How does the Housing Assistance Payment work? Answer: The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) is a form of social housing support for people with a long-term housing need. It is administered by local authorities and will eventually replace long-term Rent Supplement. You must be on the local authority’s housing list (which means that you qualify for social housing support) to be eligible for HAP.
21/08/2014 This 16:57means Page 1 that the to the local authority. amount of rent is based on your income and your ability to pay. If you are getting a social welfare payment at a post office, you must pay the local authority through the Household Budget Scheme.
Project4:Layout 1
If you take up a job or increase your working hours, you will still be eligible for HAP, provided that you meet the other conditions
of the scheme. People who are on the housing list and currently getting Rent Supplement will be transferred to HAP on a phased basis. If you are on the housing list, living in a HAP area and getting Rent Supplement, you can now apply for HAP. Detailed booklets and other information about HAP are available on housing.gov.ie
HAP is being introduced in phases. From March 2017 the final phase will bring it fully into operation in the last three local authority areas – all in Dublin. Under the HAP scheme, you find your own private rented accommodation. Although the local authority administers HAP, you will not be a local authority tenant. The rental agreement will be between yourself and the landlord. This means that you will have certain rights and obligations, as will your landlord. The rent must be within the HAP rent limits, which are based on your household size and the rental market in your area. Additional flexibility is provided where a household cannot find suitable accommodation within the HAP rent limits. The Homeless HAP Pilot in Dublin offers further flexibility for homeless people.

BIDDYS DAY IMBOLG
‘Join us for Biddy’s Day with the parade of the Biddy’s, traditional music & sessions, theatre, ffifi ire-dancers, workshops, street entertainment, outdoor events and much, much more! Fun for all the family at Killorglin’s newest one-day Celtic Festival!
Biddy’s Day (Imbolg)
is the first of Four New Celtic Festivals! in Killorglin, Co. Kerry in 2017 At Imbolg, Brigid’s crosses were made and a doll-like ffifi igure of Brigid, called a Brídeóg, would be paraded from house-to-house. Brigid was said to visit one’s home at Imbolg. It is believed that it was originally a pagan festival associated with the goddess Brigid and that it was Christianized as a festival of Saint Brigid.
