Events kick off on Wednesday Feb 22nd and continue through to Sunday the 26th. The major draws are the classes and the 3 major concerts. Classes take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1pm. The concerts start with a special presentation called Casadh na Gráige from renowned composer and performer, Michéal Ó Súilleabháin playing interpretations of songs sung by local singer Seán de hÓra and other past singers from the Blasket Island. On Friday night, also in Ionad an Bhlascaoid we celebrate the pipes in a specially curated concert featuring pipers from three traditions with Cillian Ó Briain, Maitiú Ó Casaide and Pepín de Munhalen fom Asturius in Northern Spain and Merike Perbatis from Estonia on Torupill. Each of the pipers will share from their own traditions and styles.This concert also includes a special appearance by young local pianist Ava Ní Dhufaigh. Saturday offers a fantastic line up for this year’s big concert. The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 21st February will be “Jackie”. Nitrates Derogation Applications 2017 The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, TD, has announced that 2017 Nitrates Derogation applications can now be submitted on-line. Farmers are advised to contact their agricultural advisor to determine if they should avail of this facility. The Nitrates Derogation provides farmers an opportunity to farm at higher stocking rates, subject to certain conditions designed to protect the environment and meet the requirements of the Nitrates Directive. The derogation is an important facility for more intensive farmers. Almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers availed of the derogation in 2016. The online system is aimed at simplifying the application process and assisting farmers to avoid penalties. Farmers can also remain compliant with the Regulations by managing their livestock numbers, exporting enough slurry/farmyard manure or renting additional land. The closing date for applications is 31st March 2017 and End of year Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P statements) for 2016 are available on the Department’s online system www.agfood.ie. Farmers who exceeded the limits in 2016 based on their cattle numbers will be advised in writing of this shortly but these figures will not have taken into consideration any documentation submitted to the Department by 31st December 2016. Text messages issued to those farmers who were approaching the limits in 2016 and receipt of such a text should act as a reminder to those farmers to consider applying for a Nitrates Derogation this year. The Nitrates Derogation allows farmers to exceed the limit of 170 kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare set down in the Nitrates Regulations, up to a maximum of 250 kg per hectare, subject to adherence to stricter rules. For a Nitrates Derogation application to be valid, all terms and conditions of the Derogation must be adhered to, including the following: • An annual application must be made online to the Department. No postal applications will be accepted. • Farming a holding that is at least 80% grass. Have grazing livestock – derogation is only available in respect of grazing livestock. • Have a Fertilisation Plan in place on the holding by 1st March. This plan should be submitted to the Department along with the application form unless the farmer has submitted a fertiliser plan to the Department in 2014, 2015 or 2016. • Fertiliser plans must be based on soil analysis results dated after 15th September 2013. • Applicants who have never previously applied for a derogation, or last applied in 2012 or earlier, and do not have soil analysis results must assume Index 3 for 2017 but soil sample analysis, in respect of crop year 2018, must be available and the fertiliser plan amended accordingly and submitted online to the Department before 31st March 2018. • Fertiliser accounts must be submitted to the Department no later than 31st March of the following year. • Farmers in derogation cannot import livestock manure €800,000 for a Social Farming Network and a number of projects Projects that received funding this year under the CEDRA Rural Innovation and Development Fund totalling €804,825, for initiatives to promote and develop social farming projects in rural areas. Social farming allows people, who are availing of a range of health service supports, the opportunity to participate in farming activities in their local area. Working on farming and horticulture projects has helped many participants to improve their wellbeing and grow their confidence. For participating farm families, social farming has proved a very worthwhile and satisfying activity which contributes to the local community. Social farming initiatives are a reflection of the proverb “(there is no strength without unity”. The Department of Ag’s funding of social farming projects, and the establishment of a Social Farming Network, will be of real benefit to local rural communities. Minister Creed has allocated funding of €542,325 to two social farming projects as part of a competitive tender process under the CEDRA scheme. Two additional social farming project proposals were awarded part-funding of €250,000. Down Syndrome Ireland (Cork Branch) was awarded funding of €137,000 to develop a horticultural centre for adults with Down Syndrome. Funding of €113,000 was awarded to Leitrim Development Company, in collaboration with University College Dublin (UCD), to establish a social farming best practice project for both local and national audiences. Finally, the Department provided sponsorship of €12,500 to Barry Kavanagh for his award-winning social farming garden at Bloom 2016, which helped to raise awareness and promote the concept of social farming.

Results of Badger Vaccine Trial Despite many views to the opposite, it is believed by many that the badger is a much-maligned little creature. Continued efforts by both sides have endeavoured to either vindicate or accuse the poor animal of complicity in the spread of TB. Now, the Agriculture Minister has the publication of the results of a scientific research project which involved the administration of an oral vaccine to badgers, to investigate its impact against bovine tuberculosis in a large scale field trial in Co Kilkenny. The results of the trial were very positive in that they demonstrated that the oral vaccination of badgers has a significant protective effect in badgers under natural conditions. The findings confirmed the results of earlier studies where BCG vaccine was given to captive badgers by a variety of routes, including oral innoculation. The findings are also consistent with the results of other oral vaccination studies in cattle, deer and wild boar. DAFM’s ambition is to deploy a full badger vaccination strategy as part of the eradication programme provided that the vaccination of badgers delivers an outcome equivalent to the current badger removal strategy. In this regard, the Minister emphasised that the vaccine trial in question related to the protective effect of vaccination against TB in badgers and did not provide any direct evidence of the protective effect of badger vaccination in relation to TB in cattle. Further trials are currently being conducted in six separate locations throughout the country, involving the vaccination by intramuscular injection, of several hundred badgers over 3 to 4 years, with continuous monitoring of the cattle population to assess the impact of the vaccine on the incidence of the disease in the cattle population. The outcome of these field trials, the initial results of which are due in 2018, will eventually determine whether the vaccination of badgers delivers an outcome equivalent to the current badger removal strategy. The report concluded that any vaccination programme would need to be undertaken against a background of an exhaustive investigation of cattle and herd management related factors and take account of related environmental issues. Furthermore, one of the conclusions to be drawn from the Report was that, given the relatively high incidence of TB in the country, it is likely that vaccination alone, even at high coverage levels, would require many years to eradicate the disease in the badger population. However, other studies conducted by the Department have shown that mixed strategies incorporating culling (to reduce badger density/remove infected badgers) and vaccination can be effective and may be a cost effective way of eradicating the disease. There is currently no TB vaccine licensed for anything other than humans in Ireland and, as mentioned in the report, prior to widespread deployment of oral vaccine containing live BCG, a vaccine will need to be licensed as a veterinary medicine and receive authorisation from regulatory bodies under EU medicines legislation. The report provided valuable evidence that vaccinating badgers can be an effective means of reducing the incidence of TB in badgers. This research project was led by scientists at UCD, with contributions from other colleagues and was funded by the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Gorse Fires Farmers are advised that with no extension to the burning season, for the umpteenth season, they should complete all burning before the 28th February. It is illegal to burn after this date, due to the commencement of the nesting season in birds, and general wildlife’s breeding season. The weather has been very suitable since 1st September 2016, and there is no reason that all necessary burning cannot be complete by the end of the month. Land owners are reminded that it is illegal, under the Wildlife Acts, to burn growing vegetation on uncultivated land between 1st March and 31st August and that persons engaged in such illegal activity are liable to prosecution. The Department also warns landowners that land found to have been burned during the specified closed season for burning would be considered automatically ineligible under the various support schemes, and that a variety of detection systems, including satellite based systems, were now in place to detect fire hotspots and trigger more detailed eligibility inspections where required. Suspicious activity should be reported to the Gardaí and uncontrolled or unattended fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services. Forest owners must be especially vigilant in protecting their investments. You must remember the few simple rules, notify the fire service, (and gardai, out of courtesy) as to when the fire sill begin and end, have sufficient manpower with you, (including a safety man) and proper communication and safety gear with you, choose a day with mild weather conditions and don’t light a fire within “an asses-roar” of a forest, of domestic dwellings. Don’t Let Heartburn Become a Burning Issue! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Almost everyone experiences a bout of heartburn or acid reflux at some stage in their lives and are grateful for the quick relief offered by some over-thecounter (OTC) indigestion remedies such as antacids. However, for many people, taking antacids and acid suppressants becomes an everyday measure to alleviate the chronic occurrence of heartburn and more worryingly, used to “prevent” heartburn or acid reflux. Heartburn occurs when gastric juices including corrosive hydrochloric acid leaks from the stomach and enters the oesophagus (the tube connecting the mouth with the stomach) and irritate the linings of the oesophagus. A tight muscular ring called the oesophageal sphincter is responsible for keeping those juices in the stomach where they belong but sometimes this junction fails causing heartburn and acid reflux. Antacids work by chemically neutralizing the acid providing a short-term solution to halt the irritation in the oesophagus. The health problems that can occur with long-term use of antacids can be quite varied and depend on the active ingredient of the chosen antacid. The most common active ingredients found in OTC antacids are calcium carbonate, magnesium, aluminum or sodium bicarbonate (bread soda). Common to all antacids are the problems associated with altered acidity in the stomach. The stomach is designed to secrete hydrochloric acid as well as other enzymes to help breakdown meat and solid food in preparation for digestion further down the intestinal tract. Constant use of antacids hinders this process making digestion difficult and often incomplete. Food that remains undigested in the stomach will be broken down eventually - though mostly by decomposition (rotting) and putrefaction. Another important role for stomach acid is to kill harmful bacteria and other micro-organisms that enter our bodies through food and water - everyday interference of acid production is weakening this line of defense allowing bacteria to flourish and making us more susceptible to infections. Stomach acid is necessary for the absorption of many minerals and vitamin B12. Many recent studies looking at the long-term use of OTC antacids as well as over- prescribed acid suppressants such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have shown a marked increase in mineral deficiencies such as calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron - and the knock-on effects of which include anaemia, osteoporosis, heart problems and mental health issues to name a few! Unravelling the cause of heartburn and acid reflux and treating the cause is the safest and most effective way of dealing with the discomfort. Factors that weaken the tight junction between the stomach and the oesophagus include obesity, smoking, caffeine, alcohol, bacteria imbalance and structural defects eg., hiatus hernia. It is not wise to ignore these factors in pursuit of a quick fix which may have detrimental side effects with long-term use. Interestingly, peppermint can relax this sphincter, loosening the junction, and is not recommended for those with heartburn and acid reflux. Curiously, it is a common ingredient in many OTC antacids as well as toothpaste, after dinner drinks and some herbal remedies. gestive tract in cases of spasms and cramps, if reflux is present it is best avoided or at least, choose an enteric-formula that will not effect the upper GI tract. Losing weight, giving up some of the vices and identifying any trigger foods will go a long way to dealing with your heartburn head on. Fried food and fatty foods- pastries, chocolate and cream are common triggers. Other useful measures include chewing food until it is liquid before swallowing. Avoid overeating - eat smaller meals throughout the day and always eat at ease and relaxed. Do not lie down after eating and sleep with your upper body elevated if heartburn is a problem at night. Helpful herbs include gentian, meadowsweet leaf, marshmallow root, chamomile, licorice root and slippery elm. They help to absorb acid, soothe and repair irritated intestinal linings. Probiotics in powder or chewable form can reduce the pressure on the oesophageal sphincter caused by gas in the stomach. Activated charcoal works in a similar way and is an age-old remedy for many digestive disorders. The fact that heartburn is a common ailment does not mean that it is harmless or insignificant. Long-term masking of symptoms can often hide serious health problems. Chronic reflux is the most common symptom associated with oesophageal cancer, therefore warrants investigation. Not to frighten the bejaysus out of anyone, heartburn can usually be resolved through diet and lifestyle changes. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Sunday, February 8, 1987. Took the kids to 11 o’clock Mass to hear another sermon on the theme ‘the end of the world is near’. After lunch we went for a cycle to Beenbawn and walked to the lighthouse. It was so warm that we had to open jackets and remove caps while walking along the cliff path. It’s being reported that over 100,000 people are suffering from AIDS in Zaire.
Monday, February 9. A fine start to the day but turned to heavy rain by lunchtime which caused a lot of local flooding. The fire brigade was pumping water out of O’Flaherty’s pub and the Mall was badly flooded during the high tide. Rival factions have vandalised all the large election posters around Dingle. Maybe some mischief makers are involved? John Kennedy of the VEC called to the house and asked if I’d run a course in heritage appreciation for primary school teachers. I thanked him and recommended Isabel Houlihan.
Tuesday, February 10. Cold and showery today. Letter from Patricia O’Hare, Director of the Castleisland District Archaeological Survey looking for advice on how to secure funding to publish the survey results. We were very fortunate to secure funding from the ESB to publish the Dingle survey, thanks to local man Paddy Moriarty from Dúnsíon - the boss of the ESB. It’s almost a year since former president Marcos left the Philippines and it’s reported that his wife, Imelda, left over 1000 pairs of shoes behind.
Wednesday, February 11. Very wintery weather today with heavy hail showers. The kids get a lift to school every morning from Máire Flahive of Kinard who teaches in the CBS Primary school. One of the teachers at the CBS Secondary school is Joe Creedon from Macroom and we discovered that we’re cousins. His grandfather and mine were brothers.
Thursday, February 12. Cool, frosty and fresh with sunny spells today. Charlie Haughey and Garret Fitzgerald met in a much publicised live debate on TV tonight. It was a clear win for Garret who was 14 West Kerry Live
more incisive in his points but Charlie won points for his attack on the proposed Fine Gael budget. The executive board of the International Olympic Committee is in favour of letting tennis millionaires take part in next year’s Olympics in Seoul. There goes the illusion of amateurism in the Olympics.
Friday, February 13. The former manager of Ballyferriter Co-op, Micheál MacGiobúin, is proposing to set up a £1 million salmon farm in Smerwick harbour. According to today’s edition of The Kerryman ‘ The project has generated a lot of heat in the area’. A court in America has awarded $7 million in damages against the United Klans of America after a young black man was lynched by the KKK in 1981.
Saturday, February 14. It’s a bit early yet but it looks at this stage that Fianna Fáil are on course to win an overall majority in the General Election which is only three days away now. But Garret Fitzgerald and Dessie O’Malley are making sounds like potential coalition partners. An Post is bringing out ‘love’ stamps to mark Valentine’s Day.
Sunday, February 15. Rained all night and early but stopped by 10.30. Went to 11am Mass. There’s a big banner across the street at Holy Ground which says ‘MacGearailt Fianna Fáil’ while outside St Mary’s church there’s a big sign saying ‘Dingle - keep your T.D. Vote Begley No. 1’. After Mass, Tom Fitzgerald was singing the praises of Breandán MacGearailt outside the church. Fine Gael have jumped in the opinion polls as a result of Fitzgerald’s win over Haughey in the TV debate and Garret has urged his supporters to give their transfers to the Progressive Democrats - not to FG’s outgoing coalition partner Labour there’s going to be a mighty scrap! Spent an hour throwing the javelin in the big field across the road.

Tuesday, February 17. Today was Polling Day and from 9am to 9pm the voting was brisk in the cities while in the west commentators were saying that thousands of eligible voters were gone to America. Went to the Convent national school to vote after tea in booth no:4. It was busy at the entrance to the school yard where you were given a ‘look’ by the gauntlet of supporters of one candidate or the other. This ‘look’ could be hopeful, hostile, friendly or even threatening. Just before we reached the sanctuary of the school we were accosted by one such supporter. ‘Looking for your support’ he said in a low voice. Touting or pimping I’d call it. There was another supporter wedged in the school doorway so his unfriendly and intimidating look had to be resisted and another supporter in the hallway to give us the final once-over look.
Wednesday, February 18. The election count began at 9am. Despite predictions there was no big swing to Fianna Fáil - Fine Gael were being hammered - the Progressive Democrats were predicting 16 seats - Dick Spring was going to lose his seat - all the ingredients of a cliff-hanger and that’s exactly what we got so that by late into the night it looked like being a hung Dáil again with the balance of power being held by the Independents. Breandán MacGearailt didn’t make it in South Kerry while Tom McEllistrim was defeated in North Kerry and Dick Spring scraped home with a margin of just 4 votes!

The Red Fox Tractor Run In Aid of St Francis Special School.

Tractors will be revved up in Mid Kerry this month as a progressive and caring committee hosts a tractor run which will enchance the quality of life for children with special needs. The Red Fox Tractor Run in aid of St Francis Special School in Beaufort will take place on Sunday 26th of Feburary. Starting at the Red Fox, located between Killorglin and Glenbeigh at 11.30 sharp , the colourful tractor run will finish at 3pm and will be followed by a family fun afternoon that will include traditional music from 3.30-6.30. "The fundraiser is to raise money to develop an Organic Sensory Garden that will benefit 54 children at this fantastic school located on the grounds of St. Mary of the Angels in Beaufort", said Jacqueline Riordan (Secretarty of the committee) from Glenbeigh. "As a proud mother of a child attending this school we established a committee to try and support these amazing children. The school motto has always focused on each childs ability, not their disability. St Francis Special School enables, encourages and enriches each child attending this school. Some of the children have Autism, learning disabilitiess and sensory processing difficulties. This garden wil be a year round educational resource for the children. What is not to like about some slow cooked pork belly? If you get a nice pork belly from the butchers (it is no harm to give the butcher a few days’ notice) there should be some firm meat nestled between layers of fat. It needs to be cooked slowly to allow some of the fat to melt down giving it a succulent flavour. For this recipe I have cured it slightly the day before I cook it, this helps it to firm up a little and adds a more subtle flavour. You would imagine that this makes it very complicated, however you will find if you follow the recipe it is in fact very easy. For the recipe I have served it as if I would in a restaurant but if you want to make it easier, simply serve it family style by slicing the cooked pork on a board and placing this in the centre of the table and then place all the vegetables and purée in separate bowls. Serves 4
To cure the pork belly
Ingredients To cure the pork belly 1kg Pork Belly handful of sea salt 1 tsp. fennel seeds, crushed To cook the pork belly 1 large onion, cut into rough dice 1 bulb of garlic, cut in half 2 carrots, roughly diced 1 bunch of thyme and rosemary handful of fennel seeds 500ml cider For the cabbage ½ head of Savoy cabbage, finely shredded 50g butter salt and pepper 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into discs (60cm x 40cm approx.) knob of butter a few thyme sprigs
Method You must start this a day beforehand. Mix the salt and fennel seeds together. Rub this all over the flesh of the pork belly. Put this on a tray and cover with some cling film. Leave in the fridge for about 12 hours. Following this remove, it from the fridge and wash it under a running tap. Pat this dry and now it is ready to cook. To cook the pork Preheat the oven to 130ºc. Put the onions, garlic, carrots, thyme, rosemary and fennel seeds in a large roasting tray. Put the pork on top of the vegetables and season with salt and pepper. Add the cider and cover the tray with foil. Put this in the oven and cook for about 4 ½ hours. Pierce it with a knife to check if it is done, if the knife the pierces the flesh easily the pork is done. Once you are happy it is done remove it from the oven and leave to cool slightly. To make a sauce Strain the liquid into a small pot. Put this over a medium heat and reduce for about 10-15 minutes. Add a little butter and some salt and pepper. For the cabbage Cook the shredded cabbage in a large pot of salt water for about 2-3 minutes. Strain the cabbage and add it to a pot along with some butter. Cook for 2 minutes until the butter has melted and coated the cabbage. Season with salt and pepper. For the sweet potato Heat a pan over a medium heat, once it is hot add a little oil and then a little butter. Add the sweet potato and let them brown on each side for about 4 minutes. Turn down the heat and add the stock and thyme. Let this cook for about 15 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are a little tender when pierced with a knife. There should be very little stock left once they are cooked as the sweet potato will soak up the stock. Season with salt and pepper. For the apple purée Put all of the ingredients in a pot. Cook this over a medium heat for about 15 minutes. Add the mixture to a blender and bring to a smooth purée. Season with salt and pepper. To serve Place a little cabbage in the centre of a plate. Spoon a little apple purée around the cabbage. Place a sweet potato disc to the side of the cabbage. After slicing the pork belly place 3 slices on top of the cabbage and drizzle some of the sauce over the top. Enjoy !!!

On Friday schools around the island of Ireland will turn orange to spread the message that “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”. Killorglin Community College has decided to host a music event with Killarney songwriter, Tom Lucey, with an orange theme. “We are really looking forward to taking part in #SchoolsGoOrange”, said Melissa O Riordan, teacher at Killorglin Community College. “It is fantastic to be part of a movement that spans all 32 counties, which promotes the crucial message that our mental health and wellbeing, just like our physical health, needs to be cared for and nurtured.”

It’s a world cup year for the women’s rugby team and the tournament is being hosted in Ireland in August. Ireland are currently WE ARE ranked 4th in the world and have achieved notoriety with a recent grand slam (2013) and a notable victory over New Zealand (2014). How many watch women’s rugby and come the autumn will many go to the games? There are not hundreds of thousands of die hard women’s rugby fans but the popularity is growing. The surge of interest in rugby in Ireland in the last 10 years has had knock on effects at all levels of the game, televised women’s and under 20’s games are testament to that. The women will never match the men for size and strength. Natural differences are multiplied by differing under age structures and professionalism. However the gap in skill and speed is reducing all the time. As the women make gains across the board, the men’s game is plateauing. The women’s skillset is already above the level to play a high level technical game. Having smaller, lighter, high-skilled players makes for a faster, more open game and that is the opportunity for the women’s game; to hit the sweet spot where skill and size are still in balance. Watching a good women’s game inspires a feeling heading for nostalgia. Nostalgia for the simple world of pre-professional rugby. When you supported players who looked like they were from the same planet as you and if they were wearing the Green, they were Irish. Men’s rugby has made a lot of gains but it has had a few losses. The men’s game can be bogged down in the lowest common denominator, giants cancelling each other out. Much of the individualism has been ground flat between the twin mills stones of systematic play and increased physicality.

An Lab is pleased to announce that we have been chosen, through a process of consultation with the principal community organisations in Dingle, together with Roinn na Gaeltachta, Údarás na Gaeltachta and Foras na Gaeilge, to be the lead organisation in the preparation of a Language Plan for the town. This will be done in tandem with the relevant bodies and with the community. In the ensuing paragraphs you will find an explanation and description of the process as laid down in the Guidelines for Language Planning published by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht together with Údarás na Gaeltachta and Foras na Gaeilge.

We are well aware that most of the people of Dingle have high regard and affection for the Irish language, that it is spoken regularly in many houses, shops and on the streets. It’s an important aspect of the life of the town. It helps to attract thousands of visitors every year. This plan is an opportunity to increase the number of Irish speakers in the town, to assist those who are learning or who wish to learn, and to further the provision of facilities and occasions which will enable the community to strengthen and promote their native tongue. The language planning process acquired legal status through a Government Act - Acht na Gaeltachta 2012 in which the process was laid down through which communities in various areas can achieve recognition as a Gaeltacht Language Planning Area, as a Town Serving the Gaeltacht or as Irish Networks. 26 Language Planning Areas have been recognised by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for the implementation of the Act. Under the Act, the Gaeltacht as it stands will be redefined as a Language Planning Area provided Language plans are agreed by the public in the various areas in accordance with the criteria for language planning laid down by the Act. A town serving the Gaeltacht is defined as a town situated in a designated Language Planning Area or nearby which has a significant role in providing public services, as well as entertainment, social and trade facilities to that area. According to the Act, a town must have a population of at least 1000, based on the most recent census, in order for it to be included as a Town Serving the Gaeltacht. Údarás na Gaeltachta is responsible under the Act for supporting organisations in the designated Gaeltacht areas in the preparation and execution of the plan. A period of up to two years is allotted for the preparation of a plan and a further seven years for its implementation. An Lab aims, with the assistance and co-operation of the public to have the plan completed and ready to be presented to the public by the end of this year. It is hoped that this process will encourage others in the community to come forward with enthusiasm and undertake the implementation of their very own plan!

Caragh Bridge Angling Club has put in place Life Saving Equipment thanks to Kerry County Council Community Support Fund. This greatly enhances safety on the river for club members and the general public. Life buoys and throw ropes are now readily available on the hazardous sections of the popular river.

Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé 2017 The 28 th Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé takes place next weekend. The famed club Gaelic football tournament and festival takes place 17th to 19th February in Comórtas HQ at Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry and various GAA venues across the Dingle Peninsula.
Eoin Ferris, Secretary of the Angling Club says that the availability of the grant gave the impetus to the club to upgrade safety on the river and are very thankful to Kerry County Council. It was very timely also as membership increased by 30% in 2016 which is great for the club. Membership increased after there was a number of salmon caught in June, and thankfully last year proved to be a good season. Eoin Ferris says “The club is very much a community river, ever since it’s inception, members and locals and tourists alike can fish for €40 per year which is outstanding value.” Last year the club allowed members to join online which is a great hit with tourists who may not be familiar with the club officers. CBAC would recommend other organisation and social groups to apply for the “Community Support Fund” as it could kickstart projects in the pipeline. The application is straightforward enough, which makes a change from other funding sources available. Dingle Notes. Richie Williams Firstly congratulations to Pobal Scoil Corca Dhuibhne student EMMA O CONNOR who received a Garda Youth Merit Award recently. The Ballinaboula native was nominated for her fundraising activities which included Bru Columbanus the Cork Institution which caters for overnight stays family members of patients in long term care in local hospitals. Keep up the good work Emma. Another important piece of good news comes with the announcement of 4 million Euro for Dredging Works in Dingle Harbour to commence over the next few months. When completed the Harbour should be accessible for bigger fishing boats and larger visiting passenger and commercial vessels and safer for all harbour users. This creates greater possibilities for developing our fishing industry alongside more marine related tourism business all of which is welcome news indeed for the West Kerry economy. More good news on the G.A.A. front as over the past month no fewer than 7 members of the Dingle Club have featured in the Kerry Senior Football team between the victorious McGrath Cup games and the first two rounds of the National League. Lets hope all these young athletes will stay injury free and feature in the county jersey throughout 2017 and beyond. Their dedication to training and the skills of the game will hopefully inspire all our young players to success also. Storm Festival. A varied programme with events throughout the Peninsula was well supported but my highlight was the Sunday Morning Session in Dingle Oceanworld. Here Ice and Marathon Swimmer Nuala Moore gave a fascinating hour long lecture to a dumbfounded audience relating to some of her personal and swimming adventures in different corners of the globe. Céad Míle Fáilte to all those visiting the Peninsula this weekend for the Dingle Walking Festival which features 3 days of varying walks catering for experienced and casual walkers. The Festival has grown from strength to strength and offers local and visitors alike an opportunity to experience the magnificant terrain which is on our doorsteps and is a great social and healthy activity also. A lot of the classifications are subjective and may seem arbitrary. Where are the Icelandic crime novels shelved? Crime or World literature? What about 19th century love stories? Historical or Romance & Relationships? Where there is more than one possible category for a book, we have classified it according to which reader we think would most prefer to read it. So, the Iceland crime novels are in the Crime section and the 19th century love stories are with the Historical books. Non Fiction What if you’re looking for a non-fiction book? For non-fiction, we use the Dewey Decimal system. Unlike our fiction classification, there is an exact science to shelving non-fiction. There are ten broad categories, and each of these categories is broken down into smaller and smaller sub-categories. 000-099 General Knowledge 100-199 Psychology and Feelings 200-299 Religion 300-399 Social Sciences and Folklore 400-499 Languages 500-599 Maths and Science 600-699 Medicine and Technology 700-799 Arts and Recreation 800-899 Literature 900-999 Geography and History Every call mark begins with three numbers and followed by a series of letters or numbers. The first three are a whole number; the second series are treated as decimal places. For example: 823, 823.011, 823.1, 823.11. is the correct order for these four items. You’ll see repetition across the categories. 491.62 is the call number for the Irish language. 891.62 is the call number for Irish language literature. Some of the more common call numbers are 641.5 for cookery and baking, 796 for sports, 914-919 for travel, and 941.96 for local history. Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne will be staging a Variety show called Drámaráma on 1st and 2nd of March at 7:30pm in the School Hall and the show will be performed through Irish. The transition year students have been practising their dance routines, songs lyrics and acting since last September. From Ventry to Hong Kong Harbour. Local artist Ken Bolger has been invited by the prestigious St Patrick’s society Hong Kong to Show an exhibition of his Copper and slate work. During his visit not only will his works be exhibited at a venue over looking Hong Kong harbour he will be giving workshops of talks promoting his work and the Dingle peninsula. The work Ken is taking over represents the peninsula’s Celtic history and diverse roots and takes its inspiration from the amazing scenery that surrounds us here in West Kerry. The event culminates in a black tie ball where Ken has been asked to make an award that will be given each year to a person that has contributed the work of the St Patrick’s society in Hong Kong. You will get an opportunity to see Ken’s work at Féile na Bealtaine in the Original Kerry Craft Centre this year.

The Long Term Effects Of Poor Posture Kyphosis is curvature of the spine that causes the top of the back to appear more rounded than normal. Everyone has some degree of curvature in their spine. However, a curve of more than 45 degrees is considered excessive. Poor posture (postural kyphosis) can be caused by slouching, carrying heavy bags, reading in bed, hours of forward head posture at a computor, hours playing xbox etc.. Over time, stretching of the supporting muscles and ligaments of the spine may lead to an increase in spinal curvature. Postural kyphosis mainly occurs in the thoracic region(upper spine). It is often accompanied by “hyperlordosis” of the lumbar (lower) spine. The lumbar spine has a natural “lordosis” ie. a backward “C”-shape. Hyperlordosis means the lumbar spine compensates for the excessive thoracic kyphosis with an excessive C-shaped lordosis. Sometimes kyphosis causes no symptoms other than the back appearing abnormally curved or hunched. However it may cause: •
back pain and stiffness

tenderness of the spine
•
tiredness
•
difficulty breathing
These issues usually become more likely as somebody with this condition(kyphosis) ages. Postural neck pain The most common condition that contributes to neck pain is forward head and shoulder posture. Forward head posture is when the neck juts forward placing the head in front

of the shoulders. This head position leads to several problems: The forward pull from the weight of the head puts undue stress on the vertebrae of the lower neck, contributing to degenerative disc disease and other degenerative neck problems. Similarly, this posture causes the muscles of the upper back to be continually overworked counterbalancing the pull of gravity from the forward head position. Forward shoulder posture can also lead to impingement of the supraspinatus muscle causing shoulder pain/injury. The more time spent with a forward head posture, the more likely it is that one will develop neck and shoulder problems.

The part of the neck that is particularly vulnerable to forward head posture is the lower part of the neck (C5 and C6 ), just above the shoulders. These cervical vertebrae may slide or shear slightly forward relative to one another as a result of the persistent pull of gravity from a forward head posture. This can sometimes be seen as a little step in these vertebrae at this area. Prolonged shearing of the vertebrae from forward head posture eventually irritates the small facet joints in the neck as well as the ligaments and soft tissues. This irritation can result in neck pain that radiates down to the shoulder blades and upper back, due to the following conditions:
•Pectoralis minor muscles (a pair of thin triangular muscles at the upper part of the chest)
• Trigger points in the muscles, which are points of exquisite tenderness that are painful to touch, along with limited range of motion •Disc degeneration problems, which may potentially lead to cervical degenerative disc

Killorglin Tidy Towns. Orna Eccles Killorglin Tidy Towns Committee and Crew are in urgent need of volunteers if we are going to climb to medal success this year. There are so many groups and organisations in this town, far too many to name. But if we all pooled our resources and gave only a few voluntary hours back to this vibrant town by the Laune maybe perhaps we could get a handle on all the illegial dumping that’s taking place under our nose. Take a look around you and especially on all the approach roads leading into town. It is a disgrace and everyone needs to pay attention and if by chance you are reading this and are a dumper then shame on you. Please if you see rubbish being dumped illegally then please take out your phone and take a picture, this is the only way we can stop this behavior. There are on the spot fines which are followed up by the council. Also you can log onto wwwfixmyarea.ie and follow the instructions, please include a photo. Killorglin Tidy Towns will hold their Annual AGM in O'Grady's Bar, on Thursday February 23rd @ 8pm. The 1936/38 National Schools folklore essays from Camp School were a wonderful source of information. There was even a story about a drought in 1921 when it didn’t rain from April to July and then the rain came in torrents in August causing terrible havoc for the farmers. Storm Tales Tales of bad storms in Camp and a lesson on how to make a St. Brigid’s Cross on Sunday at the Junction Bar was all part of an exciting programme of events around
Students from Meán Scoil nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory recently raised a whopping €3,700 for Cancer Research by participating in the Shave or Dye event (€2,200 to Irish Cancer Society and €1,500 to Kerry Hospice). Many students and teachers, including Principal Aodán MacGearailt, dyed or shaved their hair for this most important cause last December. Some female students also cut their beautiful long hair for the Princess Trust. The Princess Trust takes donations of hair which will be made into hairpieces for children suffering hair loss through serious illness. The students who participated and their teacher Miss Sally Ann Leahy cut 7" off their hair. This was then sent to London where it will be made into wigs for children. This event means so much to little kids who become self conscious about their hair loss, one less thing to worry about while battling serious illness. Miss Leahy who organised both events stated that the students of Meán Scoil can be very proud of their achievements. She also wanted to acknowledge the generosity of the school community and the community from Brandon to Camp in West Kerry and its surrounds.
Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Cromane 0-11, Keel 2-9 Cromane and Keel warmed up a bitterly cold afternoon in Cromane on Sunday with a lively game of football. Both sides lined out with what would be called ‘usual starters’ but the football was sharp and a credit to both trainers: Cromane’s Gavin O’Connor (marshalling the sideline in his first game in charge) and Keel’s Clive O’Callaghan. Cromane dominated the opening half with Liam Walsh and Finbar Casey doing well at midfield. After 20 minutes the home side led by 0-6 to 0-1. Cromane’s scores came from a combination of efforts from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Liam Walsh, and Mikey Houlihan with a sole free from Garry Sayers being Keel’s only response. Keel improved just before half-time with Luke Flynn , Garry Sayers, and Martin Burke coming more into the game. However, they had a lobbed goal from Terry O’Sullivan to thank for having them within two at the break, 0-7 to 1-2. The home side continued to battle against a strong breeze in the second half with points from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Micheál Shaughnessy. The course of the game changed with Keel’s Martin Burke bursting through the centre to goal midway through the half. This, ultimately, gave Keel the added energy to finish the game out. Further points from Garry Sayers and Terry O’Sullivan paved the way for an opening round win on a score of 2-9 to 0-11. Cromane, of course, will be disappointed with the loss but can be pleased with the display. The game marked the senior competitive debuts of Liam Casey, Shane Ahern, Patrick Moroney, Jason Clifford, and a welcome return for Ian Costello, who was superb at wing-back. Get Sketched in Dingle Animation Dingle, in conjunction with JAM Media, has announced a sketch trail in Dingle town on March 25th 2017. This exciting masterclass will give emerging animation talent an opportunity to participate in generating inspired creative content with a team of accomplished professionals. There will be a variety of indoor and outdoor locations in Dingle marina and around town for participants to work in, which will show off the best of Dingle’s stunning landscape and cultural places of interest. Local characters are being asked to sign up for this event to act as subjects to be sketched in pubs, cafes and outdoor venues. Their sketches will then be auctioned in the evening to raise funds for The Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Anybody willing to participate as a sketch subject will greatly contribute to this wonderful chance for enterprising animators to make a valuable impression on some of the most prolific in the Irish animation industry. It is also an opportunity for the subjects to be immortalised as part of this highly prestigious exhibition, and the auction is sure to provide a lot of laughs, as locals bid for each other’s portraits. The tutors for this masterclass are all highly skilled animators working with JAM Media. JAM Media is one of the leading creators of multiaward winning animated content for children and preschoolers in Ireland and the UK. They have received many prestigious awards, including the BAFTA Award for ‘Best Children’s Drama’ in 2012, and the Irish Film and Television Award for ‘Best Animation’ in 2014. Their programmes are shown on RTÉ, CBBC, Nickelodeon and many others. This sketch trail is sure to be a fun and worthwhile experience for everyone involved, and is one of the highlights of Animation Dingle 2017. ANIMATION DINGLE is an annual event each March that comes together to celebrate the best Animation Features, Series and Shorts that the Irish and international Animation industry has to offer. Is féidir linn an dúchas fuinniúil as ar fáisceadh na scríbhneoirí sin a aithint as logainmneacha an cheantair.
