Dingle Notes Richie Williams PARKING. The Business Chamber again request all employees and business owners who take up spaces all day long in our town centre streets to help the peak season parking situation by leaving their vehicles along any of the approaches roads where parking is allowed. A few minutes walk to work morning and evening will surely help ones mental and physical health!!!. The Green Street Car Park is another suitable location for all day parking and frees up street spaces which when used properly turn over at least twice every hour. Some of the recipients of the free parking discs in the Mart Car Park are not availing of the facility and we appeal to them to give back the passes for reissue to employees who will use them. We also appeal to all employers to impress on their employees the benefit to their respective outlets when parking is made easier for their customers. It is hoped that the extra 20 minute designated spaces promised by Kerry County Council will be put in place shortly as the existing boxes have been of great benefit particularly this year. We appeal to locals and visitors to heed the newly erected sign opposite Strand House which states that the 6 spaces there are reserved for Strand Street residents only while the street closure continues. CONCERTS. An Diseart Gardens will be the venue for a series of lunchtime concerts featuring local artitists over the next month which take place from 1p.m. on Thursdays. Entry is free but a collection bucket will be available for donations to the work of An Diseart. On Saturday August 7th at 8.30p.m. the Diseart Gardens will host the artistic collective GIORRAI with their latest production entitled Under a Shadow...Together! which explores the power of nature and resilience during the pandemic. Tickets for their sometimes comic story can be booked online at www.giorriatheatre.com or www.siamsatire.com. ACADEMY AWARDS. Great news to hear that the winner of the Best Irish Professional Short Award at Animation Dingle will now be elegible to be considered for the Oscars as the festival is now recognised as an approved route to the Academy Awards. Certainly due recognition for Maurice Galway and his crew who celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival in 2022.

MUSIC. Pa Sheehy has been very busy since popular local band Walking On Cars went their separate ways last year. The title of his new album is "The Art of Dissappearing" and features his debut E.P. "Roisin" and his first solo single "I Saw You At A Funeral". Pa was also featured in an interesting Sunday Independant supplement last weekend delving into his private life in which he gave a very frank interview. Well done and continued success Pa. AWARDS. I get great satisfaction out of highlighting the success of local individuals, groups and business outlets also. The Charthouse Restaurant has been named as one of the best 5 in Ireland in the annual Trip Advisor Travellers Choice Awards 2021. In the Best Of Best Staycation Experience Around Ireland Category the Flannery Family's Dingle Sea Safari was named in a very creditable third position and well deserved indeed. TIDY TOWNS. The National Competition is being judged virtually this year however that works out we can only wait and see. In the meantime we appeal to everybody to help keep our town neat and tidy especially concentrating on your own street, estate or road. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Castlegregory Golf & Fishing Club
The idyllic Castlegregory Golf & Fishing Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. Situated in a fabulous location between the freshwater of Lough Gill and the wild Atlantic Ocean in the form of the picturesque Brandon Bay it is number 21 in the world as “Best 9-Hole Golf Courses”. Please come and celebrate this great occasion by playing in our Golf Classic from 20th August to the 22nd of August. Bookings can be made online castlegregorygolflinks.com or by calling the office 066-7139444 In the late 1980s the idea of a golf course in Castlegregory was again mooted. Local man Maurice Fitzgerald had long harboured a desire for a links course in the vicinity, and eventually a general meeting of interested people was held in Tralee Bay Hotel in 1988. The outcome of that meeting was the renting of 57.28 acres of land beside Lough Gill, near Stradbally village, from Mrs. Peggy Griffin.
Anne O'Sullivan and her grand-daughter Isabel with Ursula O'Connell, West Kerry Hospice. Anne knitted beautiful hats of all colours since beginning of lockdown - the hats were bought by friends and family both here and especially in America where they were very much in demand. Isabel looked after all the orders and finances. They raised a total of €1100 which has been very kindly donated equally between the Hospice and Cork Kerry Health Link Bus, with €550 going to each charity. Many thanks to everyone involved.
Later, a small bit of ground was acquired on lease from Mr. Sonny O`Donnell (this is now the site of the 7th green). A committee was formed and under the chairmanship of Dr. Tony Sills, work commenced on a nine-hole links golf course in 1989. The course architect was Dr. Arthur Spring and construction manager was Mr. Michael O`Shea.

La Leche League of Ireland Breastfeeding help and information
Dingle Educational Centre We stock a large selection of toys, art materials, diaries, restaurant pads, printer ink cartridges, blackboards, chalk markers and greeting cards
It is the World Breastfeeding Week and this year’s theme is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility”. The country is slowly reopening, but many new parents are still unsure about where to find breastfeeding support. Although determined to breastfeed, it is increasingly difficult for expectant and new mothers to know where to access correct information and free breastfeeding support. It is normal to have questions and concerns about breastfeeding when it is so new to both baby and the parents. While holding hundreds of virtual support meetings since March 2020, La Leche League of Ireland has supported thousands of parents and babies. With current restrictions still limiting access to community support, many parents have increased anxiety levels around breastfeeding. Other important support services may be inaccessible because of financial challenges. La Leche League of Ireland has been providing free breastfeeding support since 1966 and is now delighted to have begun holding some in-person outdoor gatherings. La Leche League Leaders continue to be available to mothers by phone and social media to support parents on their breastfeeding journey. Since the pandemic began, LLL Ireland Covid-19 and breastfeeding online resources, appearing in seventeen languages, have been viewed over four million times. With over 60 years of breastfeeding experience, La Leche League encourages all families to recognise the importance of breastfeeding in providing immunological protection to children. “Breastmilk contains numerous live components including immunoglobulins and antiviral factors... all of which help destroy invading pathogens and boost the baby’s own immune system” (UNICEF). Anyone who becomes infected shortly before giving birth and then begins breastfeeding, and those who become infected while breastfeeding, will produce specific secretory IgA antibodies and many other critical immune factors in their milk. These help to protect and enhance their infants’ own immune responses. At this time, these immunologic factors can aid their infants’ bodies to respond more effectively to exposure and infection. Human milk is also the most sustainable first food for infants - it is delivered without excess packaging or processing and thus contributes to the health of our planet. The details of the Zoom meetings are posted weekly on the La Leche League of Ireland Facebook page. Alternatively, you can contact your local Leader, whose details are listed on the La Leche League of Ireland website. La Leche League Dingle holds online meetings via Zoom every second Friday of the month from 10.30am to 12pm. Contact Dingle LLL Leader Evelin on 087 6957291 or lalecheleaguedingle@gmail.com if you would like to receive a Zoom link for a meeting, or if you have any other questions regarding breastfeeding. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday the 13th August. We are also soon planning to hold a face to face outdoor meeting in Dingle. You will find more details and information on the La Leche League Dingle Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/ lalecheleaguedingle. As always, we are just a phone call away if you need to contact

Do we All really need a Multivitamin? Irene Ní Fhlannúra
- the glue that holds cells, bones and muscles together. Also needed for blood vessels, immunity, aiding absorption of iron and as an antioxidant. Stress, illness, pollution, exercise, some medications, smoking and alcohol deplete B and C vitamins quickly and unless the diet provides enough B and C vitamins everyday, shortfalls will occur which impacts on many body functions. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble meaning they dissolve in fat before they are absorbed into the bloodstream to carry out their functions. This group of vitamins can be stored in the body and are not needed everyday in the diet to replenish stores. Vitamin D has hit the headlines in recent years as deficiencies are now known to be widespread. Supplementing vitamin D during the cooler months is strongly recommended for most age groups from babies to the elderly. Minerals are also stored in the body and each and every one of them have significant functions. They are absorbed from the soil and sea by the plants, animals and fish we eat. Their availability is dependent on the quality of soil and sea from which they come and their assimilation into the body is aided by a wide range of vitamins.
A sure sign that Summer is waning is evident in the increasing advertising of multivitamins and mineral formulas in the media. While there is no evidence to suggest that we are scraping the bottom of our vitamin stores by the end of Summer - there are some factors worth noting that may warrant a boost particularly between seasons. Children returning to school, the busy Summer and having more time to think about our health in Autumn are also good reasons for advertisers to ramp up their campaigns. The argument for and against taking multivitamins is ongoing for over 30 years and has not really thrown much light either way on the matter. There are too many variables to study the efficacy of multivitamins in the general population leaving most studies inconclusive or unreliable. Formulations used in studies are not consistent and cannot represent the quality of all multivitamins on the market. The diet, lifestyle and health status of subjects involved are rarely taken into account before and during studies. Determining the success or failure of multivitamin use in a research study can only be established by the expected outcomes of that particular study, set out at the onset and does not consider additional benefits or detriments that may arise. All that aside, when trying to figure out whether you need a multivitamin or not, the decision can be made easier by understanding the role and demand of vitamins and minerals in relation to your health and the supply and availability of these nutrients from the food you are eating. Vitamins are organic substances meaning they come from plants or animals. Vita - meaning life or living. Minerals, on the other hand, are inorganic substances that never lived and are found in the earth, soil or water. Both vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients required by the body for growth, development and maintenance of health throughout life. Essential nutrients are not made by the body and can only be acquired through diet. Deficiencies can occur when the diet does not provide an adequate supply of these nutrients and demands are not met or if there is a problem with absorbing and assimilating vitamins and minerals from the diet. Most of the vitamins and minerals we know today were identified and categorized in the early part of the 1900s. Although in 1747 a Scottish naval surgeon, James Lindin, noted that a nutrient in citrus fruits, now known as vitamin C, prevented scurvy it wasn't until 1912 that vitamin C was classified and named by Norwegian scientists. Vitamin C was the first to be artificially synthesized in a laboratory in 1935. Since then, we are discovering more and more about the importance of vitamins and minerals and their individual properties and benefits to our health. The B complex of vitamins and vitamin C are water soluble vitamins. They dissolve in water and are not stored by the body. We need a continuous daily supply of these vitamins as they are easily destroyed during food storage, processing and cooking. The B vitamins act as co-enzymes in many body functions particularly the nervous system, immunity, red blood cell formation and energy production. They are found in a wide range of foods including whole grains, legumes, eggs, meat and fish. While diseases of deficiency such as Beri-beri are rare, evidence supports that modern diets fail to meet the increasing demand for this group of vitamins. Vitamin C, found in fresh fruit and vegetables is also needed for a wide range of functions. Vitamin C is needed for collagen formation 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
The interaction between vitamins, minerals and our cells maintains a steady demand for these nutrients. Modern living, stress and chronic illnesses place an even larger demand for vitamins and minerals that our nutritionally-poor diets are struggling to meet these demands. Our bodies are amazing, adaptable and forgiving, most of the time, but every now and then, we get dips and surges in our needs that are not always met by diet. All in all, there are many good reasons to take a multivitamin and mineral formula but your money may be better spent by choosing more specific, targeted formulas that match your nutritional needs and health status, rather than the “catch-all” formulas usually seen around this time. TAMS II REFERENCE COST REVIEW
TB RULE CHANGE TO ALLOW RESTRICTED ANIMAL MOVEMENTS Changes under new EU TB regulations will allow farmers with restricted herds to move cattle in and restock during a breakdown. Farmers experiencing a TB breakdown will be able to avail of this beneficial change from Monday 2nd August. This is the result of new provisions under the EU Animal Health Law, which removed the previous requirement for a TB-restricted herd to have completed one clear herd TB test before cattle could be moved into it. That provision had caused considerable difficulties in relation to farm management and business continuity during TB restrictions, particularly for farmers whose enterprise involved purchasing store cattle. Under the new rules, where a farmer draws up a risk mitigation plan for the restricted herd, which is approved by the Regional Veterinary Office, farmers can be given permission to introduce stock. The plan should be practical, pragmatic, and will help the farmer to reduce the risk of a recurring or prolonged TB breakdown in the herd. Once the plan is approved and in place, cattle may be moved under permit into the restricted herd. This change has been discussed at three meetings of the TB Forum Implementation Working Group, following which a procedure informed by stakeholder feedback has been developed to enable farmers to take advantage of this new flexibility. This change will also benefit those farmers with non-restricted herds hoping to sell their stock on to a purchaser whose herd becomes TB-restricted. While a TB breakdown can cause immense stress for farmers and farm families, this new change will make it simpler for the business of farming to continue for restricted herds, while at the same time mitigating the risk of a prolonged or recurring breakdown. This development, highlights the constructive role of the TB Forum and its Implementation Working Group, whose commitment and dedication is making a real difference in tackling bovine TB and protecting farmers and their cattle from the threat of a TB breakdown. Farmers seeking to take advantage of this new policy are advised to contact their RVO. €1.2 MILLION SCHEME TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS SURROUNDING RAISED BOGS A new FarmPEAT EIP project was recently launched which will develop a locally-led, innovative, results-based farm scheme for farmers who manage lands that surround some of Ireland’s finest remaining raised bogs. The launch took place in Clara, Co. Offaly on Thursday 29th July and is the latest in series of EIP projects funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020. In total, the Department has committed €64 million to these EIP projects over the lifetime of the RDP. Raised bogs represent one of the most valuable natural ecosystems in Ireland and the appropriate management of adjacent agricultural lands that surround them can play an important role in maintaining and enhancing their long-term conservation value. This project will work with local farmers to design and trial a programme especially adapted to the local landscape. It will reward farmers for improved management of habitats on peat soils along with other important landscape features such as eskers, field boundaries and watercourses. The new locally-led programme brings together farmers, farm advisers, scientists, and researchers to deliver a targeted landscape level intervention which places the farmer at the heart of the process. The programme will be results-based in that farmers will get paid based on the scores they achieve, with higher scores, indicating higher environmental quality, securing higher payments. It is hoped that this programme will form a basis for future agri-environmental schemes in these areas. As such it presents an opportunity for farmers to be involved in developing policy that could provide long term environmental and economic benefits to their communities into the future. 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
For all those who apply to TAMS or intend doing so, in the near future will be interested in the news that the review of TAMS reference costs has been finalised and the changes proposed have been implemented from the opening of Tranche 23 on 24 July 2021. This review was based on a detailed analysis of the costs of completed works up to end-March 2021. TAMS is quite a beneficial scheme for many farmers reducing costs of new farm equipment and fixed/ secure infrastructure by 40% excluding VAT for Irish farmers. The increase in reference costs for a large number of investment items will ensure farmers have access to these newer rates All the reference costs under TAMS II have been fully reviewed. The costs will be increased in the case of own labour and in the case of 62 investment items, with increases ranging from 5-40%. A decrease of 10-30% will be implemented in the case of three investment items. Payments for TAMS II Grant Applications are constantly being paid out, as projects/equipment purchases are completed and successful claims submitted. On average €1.3 million are paid out weekly with €34 million now issued in respect of completed investment works this year. The current Tranche of TAMS II closed on 23rd July 2021 with a further 2,000 applications received. These applications will now be assessed. A new tranche is now open for new applications until November 5th. A change is being implemented from this new tranche onwards in that applications for the following specific investments - Milking Machine, Dairy Structure, Milk Storage and Cooling or In-Parlour meal feeding system, will be required, as is the case with some other investment items, to be in compliance with farm waste and farm nutrient storage requirements at the time of application. These farm waste and storage requirements are laid down in Statutory Instrument S.I. No 31 of 2014 European Union (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulation 2014 up to 31st December 2017 and with Statutory Instrument (SI) 605/2017, European Union (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulations 2017 from 1 January 2018. FARM HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING PROJECTS ANNOUNCED Minister of State Heydon announces successful farm health, safety and wellbeing projects under the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) initiative. Minister Heyden has responsibility for Farm Safety and the project will focus on addressing challenges around farm health, safety and well-being. One of its main priorities is the health, safety and wellbeing of our farmers, and will start with 8 successful projects moving to full implementation this week to coincide with Farm Safety week. The initial budget of €1m has been increased to €1.8m to ensure the maximum number of proposals possible could move to full implementation. The successful projects were selected following an Open Call for proposals under the European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP). The successful applicants will work closely with a large cohort of farmers to co-develop comprehensive pilot schemes, which will identify and implement innovative ways to change behaviour and attitudes in this vital area. These projects (if successful) will pilot innovative approaches to farm health, safety and wellbeing and encourage a change in behaviour from the bottom up in relation to farm safety Details of the successful proposals are set out below: •
F.A.R.M. Connect (Fitness, Awareness, Resilience, Meitheal) Connect Initiative will work with farmers in Roscommon and Waterford to train the farmers on physical health, mental health and wellbeing.
•
The Farm Family Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Online will develop an online Health and Safety training programme to positively change people’s behaviour to mitigate risks which exist on family farms.
•
The Béal Átha na Muice Project - will work with farmers in Mayo to explore the mental challenges and strains associated with
positive mental health in the farming community through a series of facilitated eco therapy, adventure therapy, Peer to Peer Support and Stress Management Programmes.

•
An Meitheal Feirme Project - will provide farm families affected by sudden fatalities and traumas on farms with support and guidance in the aftermath of such an event to help the family deal with such challenges. The Farmers Inspiring Farmers to be Safe project will adopt a pilot ‘peer-to-peer’ mentoring and champion approach to engage farmers in an attitudinal and behavioural change towards farm safety by tackling social norms around farm safety by establishing a network of trained farm mentors in counties with significant farm fatality rates i.e. Cork, Tipperary and Wexford. The Safe Farm project will develop, deliver, assess and evaluate bespoke farm safety farmer training programme using a bottom up, participatory approach. Initially a pilot of 200 farmers will take part in the Safe Farm programme, with the aim of establishing an accredited industry standard training programme. The Eco- T project - a Collaborative Response to Farmer Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Wellness aim to promote

Sláinte agus Beatha Feirmoirí Conamara (SBFC) project is aimed at promoting and enhancing on-farm health and safety at a local level on farms across the Connemara Region. This will be achieved through a series of tools including risk assessments, training programmes, radio shows and active presence in schools across the region.

What Are You Drinking With That? Burgers and WHAT?!
When we think of burger night and what it is we are pairing with the ever anticipated meat feast, we must first think of the style of burger we are eating. Is it a gourmet burger being cooked by a professional who likes to go the whole hog by grounding their own meat, caramelising onions, pickling their own veg and making their very own secret sauce? Is it a night where we are feeling slightly delicate from the night before and need that greasy ‘dirty’ burger fix, or is it a simple craving of meat and cheese? Let us not forget the veggie lovers as a vegetarian burger can be even more complex regarding ingredients; mushrooms, nuts, roast veg, spices, beans and pulses, and fruit. When it comes to the gourmet burger, the more ingredients included poses a threat to the pairing possibilities. For instance, Cabernet Sauvignon can be the perfect accompaniment to a good quality cheese burger but once ketchup or a burger sauce is added the sweetness from the sauce can strip the juicy fruit flavours of the wine leaving nothing but an acidic dryness on the palate. However, if a good quality blue cheese is melted over some prime beef and there is little else on the burger a good quality Cabernet Sauvignon is exactly what we should be reaching for. A simple rule of thumb, big wines (Shiraz/Malbec) work well with big lush burgers that have grilled flavours, sauteed mushrooms or onions.

If we look to the takeaway burger, maybe from your local favourite or a lager city chain where there are strong raw onion flavours with the infamous ketchup and mayo blend we really should be looking for something cold to cut through the fat. The classic vanilla milkshake combination , although a favourite in the USA, should be something to consider here in Ireland as the creamy, ice cold, sweetness of a vanilla milkshake is the perfect drink to cut through those strong flavours; don’t knock it until you try it. A refreshing zesty lemonade or coke with a squeeze of lime is also a top favourite for burgers that may be that bit fattier than a homemade burger. It would be impossible to talk about burgers if we didn’t highlight one of the greatest pairings of all time, a burger and a pint. A hoppy IPA with evident grapefruit flavours are a firm favourite with a bbq burger or even a sticky pulled pork burger. Sometimes fruit with fruit is the only way to go. When talking about matches made in heaven, it is hard not to mention Jerry Kennedy’s freshly ground burgers for the BBQ and Dick Mack’s amber ale, talk about needing to take a moment! We love our veggies and when it comes to vegetarian burgers there are so many options to choose from, but let’s look at a spiced bean and roast vegetable burger perhaps. When we hear spice we need to avoid anything that is too high in alcohol as heat and heat don’t mix; but if we were to think smooth flavours to help that spiced burger reach its true potential perhaps we should look at a refreshing off-dry Riesling with a beautiful fruity mid palate to reduce the heat and allow all the flavours of the beans and vegetables to shine through. Here is to a burger filled journey of flavours and pairings that we hope you will experiment with and try. Please always drink responsibly, even be careful with those milkshakes, brain freeze is no joke. Never – EVER- drink and drive. Sláinte mhaith duit fhéin agus dod’chlann. Cheers.
A quieter week than normal for our juvenile teams started off on Wednesday evening with our U9 Boys taking a trip to Glenflesk GAA. There were some fantastic skills on show in the Barraduff pitch on the night and some great team spirit too. Our U13 White Team were back in league action on Saturday night against Ardfert and produced a fantastic display racing into a 1-11 to 0-04 lead at half-time before adding to this further with a great second half performance led to a 3-18 to 1-06 win in this County League Phase 2 game in Division 9C. Our U10 Girls were in action Sunday morning and played some fantastic football against Keel/ Listry. The girls who the day before were winning athletics medals on the same field were now flying up it with ball in hand and doing so in some style. Another great morning of teamwork, skill and the girls are getting better with every game. Sunday evening was the turn of our U13 Green Team and they did not disappoint in terms of entertainment value for the spectators in attendance. The game didn’t start the way our U13s would have liked and at halftime they trailed by 10 at halftime the score 0-06 to 4-04. The second half however saw our U13 produce an amazing comeback and a 18 point turnaround to win the game 5-11 to 4-06. Incredible scoring from the forwards and huge credit also to the defensive players and goalkeeper keeping the opposition to two scores in the second half. Team manager Mike Quirke said the boys showed great heart to turn the game around. Field Development Project: A sincere thank you to the many volunteers
that helped on Saturday morning as the Brand New Stand and adjacent standing areas began to take shape. Very exciting times ahead as we look forward to cheering on all of our clubs teams from there. We would like to also thank both Denis O’Riordan and Damien Griffin of FRC Concrete for the amazing job they have done on the stand. Senior Team:Sponsored by Almas Takeaway & Bathrooms 4U Senior: After a big win last time out against Brosna to set up a deciding round 5 in division 3B, it was back to Paddy Burke Memorial Park yesterday to face Duagh with a promotion still a prospect. On the day an outstanding performance from our senior team set up a promotion decider with Churchill next Sunday as they ran out 8-15 to 0-06 winners. Junior: Our Senior B side travelled to the Beara Peninsula this week and unfortunately it wasn’t to be on the night. The home side won by a score of 4-15 to 2-09 and saw them go on to contest the Div 6 final. Our Senior B team have performed fantastically in this year's County League, well done to both them and the coaching team. Plenty more matches ahead for the team starting with a Mid Kerry League Play Off against Beaufort on Tuesday evening next. Minor: Our Minor side are out again this Monday afternoon to face Ballymac in the Central Region: Division 2 Final. Our minor side has performed brilliantly so far this year drawing just once with Kenmare and claiming wins in every other outing. We wish them all the very best Monday afternoon for their final from all at the club.

Chicken, Green Olive and Date Tagine
Crom Dubh Cois Abhann
Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School
There is something so satisfying when you cook chicken slowly and especially when it is with spices. The aromas around your kitchen will make everyone hungry, but don’t be tempted to try to speed it up. Slow it down and the chicken pieces will be so tender. A tagine should have plenty of flavour and freshness to it, this one will not disappoint. The olives will add a little more salt to this while the dates will help to balance it with a little sweetness. Rinse the olives well, this should remove any excess salt. Enjoy cooking this as much as everyone will enjoy savouring every last bit. Ingredients Serves 4 600g chicken thighs with bone in and skin on salt and pepper butter or olive oil 1 onion, chopped finely 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp. cumin seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. coriander seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. fennel seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. smoked paprika ½ tsp. sumac 500ml chicken stock 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 20-30 green olives, pitted, chopped and rinsed 15-20 dates, chopped in half 1 lemon, zested and juiced handful of flaked almonds, toasted bunch of flat leaf parsley and mint chopped Method Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Heat a pan or pot over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and then the chicken pieces. Brown them all over. Remove from the pot. Skim off a little of the fat and turn the heat down a little. Add a little butter and add the onion. Cook this for about five minutes, add the garlic and cook for a further 3 minutes or so. Add the spices and mix into the onion and garlic. Return the chicken to the pot. Add in the stock and tomatoes, let this cook for about 5 minutes. It will start to thicken a little, at this stage add the chicken pieces, olives and dates. Simmer this slowly for about an hour or so. Check the chicken to see if it is cooked. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Stir in the lemon juice, add the zest, almonds and herbs. Serve with some cous-cous and mint yogurt. Bain Taitneamh as!!
Féile na Bealtaine has joined forces with the National Circus Festival of Ireland and Waterford’s Spraoi Festival to bring Crom Dubh back to West Kerry. A stroll down the Mall in Dingle will bring you face to face with Crom Dubh on a newly fashioned nine foot stone prop across the Mall River standing proudly in the beautiful gardens of the Captain’s House. Crom Dubh is a mythological and folkloric figure based on the god Crom Cruach, or "king idol of Ireland". Is é Domhnach Chroim Dhuibh ainm na féile ína onóir. In West Kerry Crom Dubh Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday of July when the traditional pilgrimage to Mt. Brandon, which celebrates the harvest, takes place. Tá tagairt ann i ndán an dinnseanchais den 12ú haois gur ceansaíodh Crom Dubh mar chúiteamh ar bainne agus grán, rud a chuireann le fios gur dhia na torthúlachta ab ea Crom. De réir roinnt, ag smaoineamh ar a íomhá óir timpeallaithe ag dhá fhíor chloiche nó chré-umha déag, gur léir seo agus gur dhia na gréine ab ea é, timpeallaithe ag comharthaí an Stoidiaca. Across the millennia, the stone image of Crom Dubh was preserved in the village of Cloghane, at the foot of Mount Brandon. In August 1993, the stone head of Crom Dubh was stolen from its place high up in the village church wall. It has never been returned. This summer a bit of Féile magic brings Crom back for a visit. Ár mbuíochas do Captain’s House as ucht a ngairdín a chur ar fail do chuairt Chroim. Thanks also to all the staff of Kerry county council arts office, especially Kate Kennelly and Sean Mulchinock, Creative Ireland and Spraoi studios Waterford for making this project possible and bringing crom home.

Mo Cheantar: Mo Bhaile Fearainn Ard na Caithne na Gréige! Le Sibéal Ní Shéaghdha, Scoil an Fheirtéaraigh Saolaíodh mise in Ard na Caithne agus domsa is é croílár an domhain é. Tá an baile chomh haoibhinn. Tá tráigh mhór álainn órga Bhéal Bán ar lic an dorais againn agus cé Ard na Caithne mar áit chuileachtan is iascaigh. Laistiar dúinn tá an Triúr Driféar, agus ina measc Binn Diarmada agus a leabaidh cháiliúil, a chuireann i gcuimhne dúinn go raibh Fionn Mac Cumhaill agus Diarmuid Ó Duibhne anso inár measc tráth dá raibh! D’fhéadfá a rá gur ceann dos na bailte is stairiúla timpeall é Ard na Caithne mar tá scéal laistíos de gach cloch ar an mbaile, ar tír agus ar muir. Tá’s againn fiú ó ainm an bhaile go bhfuil an áit lán de scéalta, tá ar a laghad dhá scéal ann fén logainm Gaelainne Ard na Caithne. Tuairim amháin is ea gur ainmnithe i ndiaidh an chrainn Caithne atá sé (a bhíodh ag fás anseo de réir dealraimh) ach tuairim eile is ea gur duine ab ea Caithne a mhair ar an mbaile i bhfad siar. Níos déanaí sa naoú haois nuair a bhí na Lochlannaigh anso bhaisteadar san Smerwick ar an mbaile a chiallaíonn an bá órga. Ainm ana oiriúnach ar fad dar liom! Tosnóimid trasna an bhóthair ó mo thigse le tigh Eibhlín. Ba thigh aíochta cáiliúil a bhí i dTigh Eibhlín lán de scóp agus de chuileachtadh agus ba Thír na n-Óg a bhíodh ann do mhórán daoine a thagadh ar cuairt ó chian is ó chóngar. Thagadh na sluaite ann ag rince is ag amhrán agus ar laethanta saoire ag foghlaim Gaelainne ó mhuintir Ard na Caithne. Bogfaimid ar aghaidh anois go háit stairiúil eile ar an mbaile - sin Oiléan Dhún an Óir (Fort del Oro), atá díreach laistair de mo thigh. In 1580 bhí éirí amach anseo ag na hÉireannaigh i gcoinne na Sasanach agus chabhraigh na Spáinnigh agus na hIodálaigh leis na hÉireannaigh mar ba chaitlicigh iad sin chomh maith. Bhuaigh na Sasanaigh orthu ar fad is baolach agus mairíodh suas le 600 duine in Ard na Caithne an lá úd. Ainmníodh na goirt Gort a’Ghearradh agus Gort na gCeann de bharr an áir seo agus creid é nó ná creid, tá mo thighse tógtha i nGort na gCeann! Triailim gan ligint don chuimhneamh seo teacht idir mé fhéin agus codladh na hoíche! Anois téanam go cé Ard na Caithne. Is breá le’m chroí imeacht amach ar bhád ón gcé seo agus is anso a bhíonn lúcháir ar leanaí an bhaile ag léimt isteach san uisce i dteannta a chéile sa tsamhradh. An rud is ansa liom, áfach, ná a bheith amuigh ar an bhfarraige ag féachaint ar phluaiseanna, ar fhailltreacha, ar oileáin agus ar charraigeacha agus tá ainm orthu ar fad, mar shampla, Oileán Dhún an Óir, Cuas a Bháid, Faill na mBú, Faill an Áirse, Faill an tSrutháin, An Carraig Mhéin agus na Fochaisí. Ach faraor tá drochscéal bainteach leis an gcé seo chomh maith. Ar an tríú lá de mhí Dheireadh Fómhar 1959, bádh triúr iascairí áitiúla a bhí ag iascach amach ón gcé seo – Pádraig Pheats Dhomhnall Óig Ó Dubháin ó Ard na Caithne a bhí 68 bliain d’aois, Diarmuid Jeirí Ó Flatharta ó Chlochar a bhí 51 bliain d’aois agus Micheál Maidhcín Beag Budhleair ó Ard na Caithne a bhí 37 bliain d’aois.
Trócaire ar anamacha na n-iascairí bochta seo atá curtha i ngarraí an iascaire. Gan dabht is iad na daoine agus na comharsain a thugann sprid do Ard na Caithne. Is breá liom na daoine ar fad a mhaireann ar an mbaile anois ach bainim ana shúp ar fad as cloisint fé na daoine a mhair anso fadó. Ní dhearúdfar go deo gur ón mbaile seo a saolaíodh an t-údar cáiliúil Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh nó An Spailpín mar ab fhearr aithne air. Beidh na hamhráin Oileán Dhún an Óir, An Baile atá Láimh leis Siúd agus mórán eile nach iad againn go deo. Chomh maith leis sin tá dhá leabhar againn ó pheann an tSiúir de Lourdes Stac -Ard na Caithne Súil Siar agus Thar Balla Isteach. Tomhais na coicíse

Kerry Biosphere Reserve: Logo Design Competition The Kerry Biosphere Reserve, in conjunction with Killarney Hotels Ltd., is launching a competition aimed at designing a new logo that will promote the Biosphere both at home and abroad. Although fast approaching its 40th birthday it is only in the last 12 months that the Kerry Biosphere Reserve has had a dedicated officer to promote the actions in support of the UNESCO designation. Speaking at the launch of the competition, the Managing Director at Killarney Hotels Ltd Adrian Stehr said that Killarney Hotels Ltd. are delighted to be supporting this competition for the design of a unique logo for the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. “The landscape, environment and heritage of Kerry has drawn people to the area for generations and to have a UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve signifies how precious that it is, not just to us here in Kerry but on a global scale” he said. Biosphere Reserves are described by UNESCO as learning places for sustainable development. There has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Kerry since 1982 however the area included has since been increased to fit the expanded criteria for a Biosphere Reserve set by the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme. The Kerry Biosphere Reserve is home to Ireland’s highest mountain range, the MacGillycuddy Reeks and includes the Killarney National Park and the Paps mountain range in the east, known as Dá Chích Anann in Irish and named after an ancient goddess Anú described as the ‘mother of the gods’. As support builds locally and nationally for the project, the Kerry Biosphere Reserve has issued an open call for a logo design to promote the Biosphere in all areas of its operations. The competition is open to anyone with the skills and interest to create a logo that embodies the values of the Biosphere Reserve programme and the unique landscape and culture here in Kerry that has been awarded this accolade. The winner will receive a cash prize sponsored by Killarney Hotels Ltd and MD Adrian Stehr added that they are beyond excited that their hotels have now re-opened again and that we can share this unique and beautiful landscape and its natural heritage with all our guests. He said they look forward to working alongside the Kerry Biosphere Reserve to promote this area for sustainable tourism into the future.

She said that after what may be described one of the hardest years for the hospitality sector they are showing leadership in shaping a new future where people, nature and culture connect through their support for the competition. The Logo competition will be open until September 30th after which a selection of entries will be shortlisted. The public will then be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite logo as designs will be on display in Killarney house alongside an art exhibition showcasing primary school students artwork inspired by the Kerry Biosphere Reserve. New Book on West Kerry Evangelical Campaign A new book on the evangelical campaign in West Kerry has just been launched. "Faith and Fury" by Bryan McMahon explores the work of Church of Ireland evangelicals in West Kerry between 1825 and 1845. The campaign was widely hailed as a model of a successful missionary campaign; however it evoked a passionate reaction from local Catholic priests. The missionaries wished to entice the Irish-speaking people of the Dingle peninsula away from what they saw as superstition and enthralment to Rome, while priests objected to what they saw as inducements offered to Catholics to convert. As new mission schools and churches were built, the war of words between clergymen of both persuasions was fomented by rival newspapers, reaching a climax in a notorious libel case of March 1845. In this study, Bryan MacMahon gives a comprehensive overview of the origins and progress of the conversion campaign and the responses to it. The narrative brings the personalities involved into vivid focus and records the long-lost voices and values of those on both sides of the bitter divide. Bryan Mac Mahon’s previous books include The Great Famine in Tralee and North Kerry (2017) and Ascend or Die: Richard Crosbie, Pioneer of Balloon Flight (2010). He has a particular interest in the history of his native Co. Kerry and has published articles in a range of historical journals including History Ireland, The Irish Sword, The Kerry Magazine and Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society.

A History of Cumann Bádóirí Naomh Bhréanainn Dingle Sailing Club (Part Two: Mid 1990s - 2021) John O’Connor - with contributions from Ann Curran and Brian Farrell. a club that was barely seven years old. In the intervening years, Cumann Bádóirí sailors participated regularly in the Dun Laoghaire-Dingle race and achieved honours on several occasions. One of the young members of the club, in its infancy, Jeffrey Smith, of the resident yacht Kimberley Laura, became a senior petty officer in the American Coastguard and is now a harbour master in Massachusetts. On the first Figaro Race, hosted in Dingle, which sheltered in Cork due to bad weather, several junior members of the Dingle club sailed round (with Figaro skippers) to Dingle to restart the next leg of the race. Dingle ran two topper championships; Minister Hugh Coveney officiated as prize-presenter in one and his sons Simon and Patrick acted as protest committee.
Group of budding sailors preparing to leave for a sailing course at Eddie English’s sailing school. L to R: Nicholas O’Connor, R.I.P; Wesley Flannery, Niall Farrell, Peter Fanning, Colm O’Shea, John Griffin, Olga Sheehy. In 1993, representatives from harbour users: Cumann Bádóirí Naomh Bhréanainn; Cumann Rámhíochta Corca Dhuibhne; the Diving Club; and harbourmaster Brian Farrell; got together under the chairmanship of Dr Finbarr O’Shea, to explore the possibility of housing the clubs in a permanent building on the marina breakwater, and also to include facilities for visiting boats to the new marina. After agreement on the requirements was reached by the voluntary group, a company a was formed - with two representatives from each group (Dr Finbarr O’Shea and John O’Connor, The Wood – sailing; John R. O’Connor and Mike Shanahan – diving; Eddie Hutchinson and Maunza Heidke – rowing; and Brian Farrell, harbour master) - to oversee and manage the centre (The Marina Centre). Dingle Sailing Club moved into the building in 1999. The club in its new home, which included a spacious dinghy park, expanded its activities: new class dinghies were purchased, again by fundraising money. The club started to move out to sailing competitions in other ports – and hosted class competitions at home. As the marina became home to some local yachts, sailing club members got opportunities for big-boat sailing.
After the first ten years of its life, Cumann Bádóirí Naomh Bhréanainn, had come a long way from its humble beginnings in Dingle Technical School and its small fleet at the Rocket House launch. The success of the club, was the result of generous support from local people and dedicated volunteer-officers and members who had a keen interest and sense of ownership in their club. The ethos of the club was the driving factor which helped move the club along at (what now seems to have been) such a frenetic pace. In that first decade the handful of founders and their supporters stuck with their creation and established a sound foundation for present and future members. The club has evolved into a well-equipped centre for sailing with modern facilities at Dingle Marina Centre. The ethos of making the club and its boats available to all in the community continues. Like many rural clubs it suffers from the loss of young people to centres of employment away from the area. Remember it is your club now, in your area. Know that you will be welcomed always, if you wish to get involved.
In 1993 an association with Dingle Sailing Club and the National Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire, was founded. This twinning of the clubs was underpinned by a biennial yacht race between the two ports; following the inaugural race, which was hugely successful, the two clubs shared the national sailing club of the year award in 1994; it was a significant achievement for

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland The communities and businesses of the Dingle Peninsula have once again worked so very hard to make our destination safe, welcoming and a place for families and visitors to have a fabulous time this extraordinary summer. While the weather may be providing “a very Irish summer”, it is so good to see so many enjoying our local activities and attractions both on land and sea. Best of luck to all that only had the chance to re-open last week for the first time this year. We wish you all the very best of luck and hope you have a great few months ahead. Whilst managing social distancing can be challenging at times, we ask everyone to be mindful of our community by practicing safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wearing your face mask indoors and in queues. Also, we would ask all to be considerate of our local communities and family visitors as pubs close each night – noise carries so please be mindful as you head home, thank you. Tourism News and Updates: Congratulations to The Charthouse Restaurant on being placed at No. 4 of TripAdvisor’s ‘Best of the Best’ fine dining restaurants in Ireland. So well deserved and its terrific to see the door back open again. Congrats to Jim and his team. Also, to Liadain, team and all the Dingle Way Committee with the Dingle Way named as a ‘Hidden Gem’ remote Irish hiking trail and one of the most beautiful in the world. It is now up there with the Inca Trail in Peru, Spain’s Camino de Santiago which is well known to so many here with its connection to St. James Church, and the Refugio Frey and Cerro Catedral trail in Argentina.

alcohol if it is being drunk by a person under 18, or if they have cause to believe that it will be consumed by a person under 18.
The Law On Outdoor Drinking Question: What has changed in the law on drinking outdoors?
It is an offence to consume alcohol bought in a closed container (like a bottle or can) within 100 metres of the off-licence where it was sold. The law does not forbid a pub from delivering drinks to people’s homes, or stop customers from bringing drinks home.
Answer: The law on drinking outdoors was recently changed to clarify that pubs and restaurants can serve alcohol to customers who are seated in ‘designated areas’ outside the premises.
It is also an offence to be so drunk in a public place that you could reasonably be assumed to be a danger to yourself or to anyone around you.
Pubs and restaurants have been unable to open for indoor service due to COVID-19 restrictions. Local authorities have permitted outdoor seating in designated outdoor areas, but, previously, it was illegal to serve alcohol in those areas.
During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. You can also get information and advice from:
There has been no change to the laws about drinking outside in public places that are not ‘designated areas’ of a licensed premises. Drinking outdoors is not prohibited in general, but local authorities have bye-laws that don’t allow drinking in some or all public places.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Hope ye are all keeping well and enjoying the mix of sunshine and rainy days. We were delighted to have Heather Humphries, Minister for Justice, Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands and Norma Foley, Minister for Education visiting Dingle Hub last week as part of Kerry roadshow, visiting projects under #ourruralfuture. We’re really happy to be recently awarded Connected Hubs Funding under Dept of Rural and Community Development Rural Development Strategy, which will enable us to improve our facilities here at the Dingle Hub and to continue to support the creation of viable and sustainable jobs on the Dingle Peninsula. Sustainable Innovation Project on the Dingle Peninsula We got a great response to our callout for farmers to participate in the Sustainable Innovation Project to test on-farm sensor technology. As part of an EU Horizon 2020 funded project, Dingle Hub together with Teagasc, Kerry Agribusiness, Net Feasa and the IFA are working together on this initiative to address and achieve early progress in hitting environmental/climate change targets; at the same time creating more profitable and sustainable farming systems through the introduction and use of sensor technology. We will be testing on-farm sensor technology, which will capture real-time data on the farms, with the aim of improving environmental metrics and precision management and also in reducing labour demand. Over the next few weeks we will liaise with all applicants to determine suitability. 34 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Small Changes: Invasive Species There is a native wildflower whose cheery yellow rosettes are in full bloom at present. It is an excellent source of pollen and is rated in the top 10 of all native wildflowers as a source of nectar and nectar sugar. It is an exclusive food source for over 30 species of insect (some of which are endangered), it is the flower most frequented by butterflies and over 200 species of invertebrate have been recorded visiting it. It was used extensively as a medicinal plant in Ireland prior to the advent of modern medicine and is mentioned frequently in Irish folklore stories. It might surprise some people to learn that the native wildflower I have described is the Buachalán buí (Ragwort) because these traits are overshadowed by its’ notoriety as a noxious weed. Under the Noxious Weeds Act of 1936, it is an offence for the owner or occupier of lands not to prevent the growth and spread of noxious weeds. Ragwort, which is often described as invasive, was included as a noxious weed because its leaves contain chemical compounds which cause cirrhosis of the liver in cattle and horses if eaten in large quantities. Livestock will avoid eating it fresh in the field (unless the land is overstocked and they have no other choice) but they are unable to avoid plants saved in hay and silage. 18 farmers were penalised for having ragwort on their farms last year. I cite the example of Ragwort, not because I think that ragwort hasn’t the potential to be harmful to livestock (although its importance in supporting natural biodiversity certainly isn’t taken into account) but because current legislation does not directly reference truly invasive plants or animals which cause far more damage. Invasive species are defined as non–native species which have been introduced by human intervention outside their natural range, that have the ability to threaten native wildlife and cause damage to the environment, economy or human health (www.biodiversityireland. ie). Creatures not native to ecosystems are the second greatest threat to biodiversity worldwide after habitat destruction. Better known invasive species (also known as alien species) include rhododendron and Japanese knotweed. Rhododendron is an extremely invasive plant species. It is avoided by grazing animals thus giving it significant advantage over native species and as it effectively shades out light, growing conditions underneath the rhododendron are hostile to all other plants. It is an aggressive coloniser with a mature bush being able to produce a million dust like seeds every year and it can easily regrow from cut or flailed stumps. It is also host to a fungus that has the potential to attack many native plants including oak trees in which it causes sudden oak death. In addition to the devastating effects on native flora and fauna, efforts to control and eradicate rhododendron are very costly, with half a million euro in funding allocated in April of this year towards trying to clear the infestation in Connemara National Park alone. Similarly, Japanese knotweed, a plant which not only excludes native vegetation when it
becomes established, but can also grow through concrete and tarmac threatening the structure of homes, roads etc., costs European countries in the region of €12 billion a year to control.
to discover a plant such as giant hogweed or knotweed on your property, consult with professionals on how to eradicate it safely and effectively.
These are just two examples of 48 high impact and 78 medium impact invasive species on a prioritization risk assessment list of plants and animals in Ireland at present. There is also a watch list for relevant authorities of a further 342 species which have been identified as high risk should they become introduced. One of strongest pieces of legislation covering these species are articles from a 2011 EU regulation which places a ‘prohibition on the introduction and dispersal of certain species’ from a blacklist of unwanted species (as of 2020 there are 66 species blacklisted). Any person who ‘plants, disperses, allows or causes to disperse, spreads or otherwise causes to grow scheduled plants (including Japanese knotweed and giant hogweed)’ shall be guilty of an offence. However, there is no dedicated funding in relation to most aspects of this legislation and to my knowledge nobody has been prosecuted with respect to any invasive species in Ireland to date. Furthermore, Ireland has recently been asked by the European commission to explain why it has not established a plan to tackle invasive species getting into the ecosystem. While there is many objectives listed in the Biodiversity Action Plan (2017-2021) Ireland does has not enacted any policies in this area.
Be Pet Wise – The growing availability of exotic pets means that more people have animals that have the potential to escape or be released into the natural environment. Common pets such as cats and ornamental fish also negatively impact native flora and fauna. Never release any fish to ponds or streams and ensure domestic pets are neutered.
Individuals can take measures to prevent the introduction of new species in addition to containing the spread of established plants and animals. Be Plant Wise - The majority of invasive species currently established or sighted in Ireland are plants and in general freshwater environments are most at risk from high impact species. It is therefore important never to dump plants, aquatic plants in particular, in the wild. Always dispose of unwanted/overgrown plants and growing media responsibly, being especially careful if composting plants and roots. Better again, know what type of plants you are buying to begin with, where they have been sourced from and choose to grow native plants as much as possible. If you are purchasing top soil, always buy from a known source (especially if you want to avoid an infestation of Japanese knotweed) and ensure all vehicles and equipment used are cleaned to avoid contamination. If you are unfortunate
Check, dry and clean - is a mantra all water users should adhere to, especially for freshwater habitats (lakes, rivers, canals), in order to stop the spread of invaders from one water body to another. Check all boats, equipment, clothing and footwear by visually inspecting them. Clean everything thoroughly and Dry it for at least 48 hours so that you do not transfer unwanted plants or animals. The spread of invasive species is monitored, recorded and mapped by Biodiversity Ireland. If you do spot any exotic or well-known invasive plants or animals, submit the sighting to their website. It helps scientists to understand the distribution and monitor the spread of the problem. Further details on protecting the environment in this regard as well as details of all high impact invasive species can be found on www.biodiversityireland.ie and www. invasivespeciesireland.com A final word on the much maligned Buachalán buí. Despite its benefits in supporting biodiversity, farmers and landowners understandably do not want it growing on their land. Even though a single plant can produce between 50,000 and 200,000 seeds, they usually fall within 5m of the parent plant (which will only germinate if they fall on bare/waste soil). This means that a lot of plants growing on roadsides/waste ground do not pose too great a threat to agricultural land (unless it is overgrazed in which case conditions are suitable for germination). The adage of ‘one year’s seeding makes seven years’ weeding’ certainly applies, so cutting or pulling the plant before it goes to seed and disposing of it appropriately is one of the most effective measures to control the spread of Ragwort.

A/C were finding it tough against a pacy Glenflesk and a great turn over by Leah Courtney, joint captain, saw her work it up to her co captain Sharon for a point. This inspired the home team and a clever move saw Niamh release Alanna who raced through and found Sharon for her second goal. A/C's purple patch continued after the water break with Molly fetching out of the clouds, quickly onto Aoibhinn who pin pointed Sharon who slipped it to Lia Sheehy to finish well to the back of the net. Glenflesk responded with 3 points but found it tough to breakdown A/C's defence with Caoimhe Curran, Tara and Beatrice dogged at the back. Caoimhe Skinner kicked two great points as Lily and Lia Sheehy worked hard to set up scores. Saoirse netted twice, the 36 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
second being the pick of the goals as the twins Niamh & Aoibhinn interlinked well to set Saoirse up for a great score. H/T: A/C 5-3 Glenflesk 0-3. Two great saves by Beatrice and stout defending by Liwia, Jenna and Molly kept them at bay. Fresh legs upfront saw Andrea, Maria, Rachel and Amy set up Caoimhe for 3 more points as midfielders Alanna and Leah ran themselves into the ground. Dreapadóir is ea an táthfhéithleann a mbíonn greim daingean aige mórthimpeall ar phandaí eile sna clathacha. Tá taithí againn ar fad ar an gcumhra a éiríonn as tar éis na báistí an tráth seo de bhliain agus é fé bhláth. Is minic a dheineann sé plandaí eile a thachtadh lena neart. SENIORS: County Senior Football League - Division 5B (round 5): Cromane 3-18, Kerins O’Rahillys 1-11 Cromane secured the two points in last Saturday’s county league in Cromane mainly thanks to three first-half goals. The visitors from Tralee were left stranded when goals from Darren Houlihan in the 7th minute; Sean O’Sullivan in the 12th minute and an absolute rocket from Darragh McKeefry in the 20th minute left Cromane ahead by 3-7 to 0-3. Another highlight was Eanna Healy’s first point as a Cromane senior. In fairness to Kerins O’Rahillys they went toe-to-toe after this but could never peg back such a deficit. Cromane ended the first half ahead by 3-9 to 1-5. In the second half, it was tit-for-tat with highlights being points from teenagers Eanna Healy (his second of the game but his first in a senior jersey) and Liam Joy (his first point as a Cromane senior player in his first game). The Cromane seniors now have a promotion playoff next weekend against Ballyduff. A good performance all round, well done to our Cromane men and best of luck next weekend. UNDER-17s: Central Region Division 3 (round 2): Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 4-14, St Michael’s/Foilmore 4-10 The GGC U17s claimed their first Central Region win on Monday evening last (July 26) in Glenbeigh. The four-point triumph was just reward for the efforts of a younger than usual side. Jason O’Connor and Charlie Foley were in good form as were Liam and Conor Hayes. The other teams in Division 3 of the Central Region are Na Gaeil, Castlegregory, John Mitchels, and Skellig Rangers/Valentia. UNDER-15s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-15s begin their Central Region Division 2 campaign next Wednesday (August 11) with a home game against Castleisland Desmonds. This is a rematch of the sides’ recent County League final and will be their third meeting of the year. The GGC lads will also play Churchill, Laune Rangers B, and MilltownCastlemaine in this division. UNDER-13s: The GGC under-13s will play their second game in phase 2 of the county league next Monday (August 9) when they travel to Gneeveguilla. They had already won their first game of the phase 2 campaign against the combined team of Asdee/Ballylongford/Ballydonoghue/Clounmacon earlier in July. They have further games against St Pat’s, Blennerville, and Duagh to round out their county league season. CUL CAMPS: We hosted the ever-popular GAA Cúl Camps in Cromane last week. Once again a packed camp of 100 children between the ages of 6 and 13 enjoyed their week. The weather was up and down, but the spirits were high throughout the week as the camp co-ordinator and the coaches passed on their expertise. Many thanks to club volunteers Patrick Casey and Wille Galvin for helping 38 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Sa leabhar so tá an cuntas is iomláine riamh ar Luíochán Lios Póil. ‘De réir an phlean a leagadh síos chun borradh a chur leis an gcogadh in aghaidh fhórsaí na Breataine tháinig méadú mór ar fuaid na tíre ar líon na n-ionsaithe ar na fórsaí sin, go háirithe ar na Dúchrónaigh. Bhí Óglaigh an Iardheiscirt an-ghníomhach, ag feidhmiú faoi chóras an Cholúin Reatha le luíocháin rialta ar fhórsaí na Breataine á n-eagrú, go háirithe i gCiarraí agus i gCorcaigh. Ó thús na bliana 1921 tugadh faoi ndeara go mbíodh patról rialta póilíní agus Dúchrónaigh ag taisteal i leoraí ón nDaingean go hAbhainn an Scáil gach Domhnach, agus na trinsí a bhí réabtha ag na hÓglaigh á líonadh isteach acu. Timpeall dáreag a bhíodh sa leoraí. Beartaíodh ar luíochán a dhéanamh ar na fórsaí sin i Lios Póil ar an nDomhnach, 20ú Márta.’ - Mícheál Ó Móráin An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid Tá gach Ciarraíoch ar bior an mbeidh an lá leo in aghaidh Bhleá Cliath. Is beag duine gan dabht ná deireann go gcaithfidh siad Maigh Eo a threascairt ar dtúis. Bhuadar go bog ar Chill Dara. Bhí ocht phoinnte ag Bleá Cliath ar Chill Dara. Cluiche mall bea í go raibh an réiteoir an- dhian agus dar le scata fiú tráchtaire ar RTÉ go gcuaidh cupla feall i ngan fhios dó. Gan dabht déarfadh aon duine sa cheantar seo againne go raibh an réiteoir ar thaobh Bhleá Cliath. Ní déarfainn é, ach beidh seans acu nuair a bhuaileann siad leo sa chraobh, do Chorn Sam. An lá eile bhí imreoirí maithe ag Cill Dara- fuaireadar an-bháide ach déarfainn ná beadh aon dul acu dtí Maigh Eo. Tá mar a deirimíd seanchúiseanna ag Maigh Eo agus againn féin ortha. Má bhuann siad ar Mhaigh Eo ní bhfaighfidh siad bog é i g coinne Chiarraí. Dúras níos luaithe ná buafadh Ciarraí ar Bhleá Cliath dtí an mbliain seo chugainn. Tá sé ina ghruth agus i na mheadhg agam. Ná beadh sé nótálta dá mbainfeadh Maigh Eo treascairt astu. Iománaíocht Tá ard chluichí iománaíochta feiscithe againn i mbliana. Tá aiséirí déanta ag Port Láirge agus tá Luimneach lán do shár iománaiocht draíochtúil. Mo ghraidhn a gcraoí. Na Cluichí Oilimpeacha. Sar a dtosnód ag caint fés na cluichí, blianta ó shoin bheartaigh Príomh Aire Shasana John Major ar bhéim fé leith a chur ar oiliúint iomathóirí a measfaí a bheadh go maith. Anois bíonn airgead ar fáil le sár oiliúint a chur ortha siúd go mbeadh an braon ceart ionta. Tá teachtaireacht ansan. Nílim ag rádh ná tugtar cúnamh do iomathoírí na hÉireann ach d’fhéadfaí oiliúint speisialta a thabhairt dóibh siúd go measfaí go raibh mianach fé leith ionta. Comhgháirdeas lenár laochra agus comhbhrón leo siúd ná raibh aon dath don ádh ortha. Gan dabht measaim gur an-onóir a bheith páirteach sna cluichí ach is baolach gur le bonn do dhath éigin a bhíonn súil ag an bpobal. Bhí mí -ádh ar scata acu mar Aodán Breathnach ó Ghaillimh a ghnóthaigh bonn cré úmha agus de bharr gur ghortaigh sé a chois, ní raibh sé abalta dul chun cinn. Ní bhainfidh beó na marbhh dó í. Bhí tionóisc ag iomathóir eile i gcomórtas na gcapall agus n’fheadar conas ná chuaidh an liathróid Gailf isteach sa pholl i gcás Rory McIlroy. Dá raghadh an liathróid sa pholl bheadh bonn cré úmha ag Rory. Ní raibh dubh t’iongan i gceist. Thug na mná , rámhaithe, foireann ceathrair boinn cré úmha leo. Cogháirdeachas leo go léir a ghóthaigh bonn agus sibhse ná fuair ceann, ná bac san, bhíomhair ar fad go maith agus sibh ar bhúr ndícheall. Tán sibh óg fós. Is sa Sciobairín a bhí an gabhar mór meith blasta á rósta a bhuíochas don mbeirt ard rámhaithe a thug boinn óir leo. Is as a thaínig boinn airgid an babhta deireannach chomh maith. Is diail iad rámhaithe seo Iarthar Chorcaí. Bás Bean a fuair bás le déanaí ná Molly ‘O’ Cíobháin ós na Gorta Dubha. Saolaíodh í sa bhliaon 1932. Cuireadh a luaithreach i reilig Dhún Úrlann tréis Aifreann na Marbh i Séipéal an mBhuailtín. Chaith sí blianta mar chuntasóir i mBleá Bliath. Bean an- gheanúil bea í agus bhí sí an- dhathúil. Is cuimhin liom í a fheiscint i ndrámaí i sean- scoil

na gCailíní ar an mBuailtín, Bhí gruaig dhonn uirthi agus a ceannaithe tharraingteach ghrástúil. Gan dabht bhí gach buachaill óg sa cheanntar ag sodar ina diaidh. Nuair a bhíodh buachaillí an cheanntair cruinnithe i siopa Sheáinín Ó Conchúir ar an mBuailtíín deireadh Séainín, ‘nách breá an bhean Molly Ó, agus n’fheadar an bhfuil aon chairdeas idir í agus aon duine agaibh nó an eagla atá oraibh- n’fheadar fúibh ar sé?’ Deirfiúr b’ea í do Pháid Phiarais ó Cíobháin ná maireann, suaimhneas siorai go raibh aige, agus beirt deirféar, Siobhán Lahart atá pósta leis an dTeachta Dála Sean Lahart, Fianna Fáil agus Eibhlín Lawn. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam geanúil. Seipéil Tá ós cionn céad caoga bliain ó tógadh séipéal Naomh Uinsinn ar an mBuailtín a dúirt an t- tAthair Mac Ginneá ag Aifreann an Domhnaigh. ‘Sé an t-aAthair Pádraig Ó Mongáin a choisrigh an láthair agus a leag an chéad bhloc do shéipéal Naomh Uinseann ar a 19ú lá do Iúil 1855. Deirtear go raibh suas le deich mhíle duine i láthair. Sa bhliain 1857 a coisríodh láthair Eaglais Naomh Gobnait i nDún Chaoin. Coisríodh láthair shéipéal Mhaolcéadair i gCill Chúile sa bhliain 1866. Dar leis an Mon. Mícheál Ó Mainnín gur trua nár cuireadh an séipeal fé choimirce Naomh Bhréanainn. Ard fhear b’ea an tAthair Pádraig Ó Mongáin. Fear faobhair b’ea é. Fuair sé bás cupla bliain sara mbeadh leathchéad slánaithe aige. Tá sé curtha láimh le séipéal Naomh Uinseann. Scéal a tharraingíonn scéal. Bhíos ag éisteacht le Aifreann an Domhnaigh i Lios Póil a bhí le clos ar Raidío na Gaeltachta ar a 11 a chlog. Bhí sé an-dheas. Bhí an cór agus duine aonair ag casadh amhráin agus iomain go blasta taithneamhach. Is diail iad muintir Lios Póil. An tAthair Ó Muineacháin a cheiliúr an tAifreann a bhí i lár Féile Lios Póil.
