The Faerie Tree and Matters of the Heart! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The Hawthorn Tree (an Sceach Gheal), a native Irish tree is brightening up the ditches and fields with its white blossoms around the country right now. It has been a part of Irish folklore for centuries and remains a special gathering place for the faeries that inhabit our countryside. If you dare to cut one of these trees down or harm it in anyway, it is thought that bad luck will follow. Irish folklore has many tales of woe from ancient times to more recent times of the unfortunate outcomes of messing with the “Faerie Tree”. In 1999, Irish folklorist and story-teller, Eddie Lenihan, warned Clare County Council that the “destruction of the fairy thorn bush or "sceach" at Latoon outside Newmarket-on-Fergus to facilitate the bypass plans could result in misfortune and in some cases death for those travelling the proposed new road”. His words were heeded and the sceach was saved, after the County Planners revised their plans. Whether you are a believer or a sceptic, take note that the wee folk who are intent on protecting these very special trees just might have our best interests at heart.
that phytochemicals in hawthorn may act directly on the heart muscle to increase the force of heartbeats and to relax the arteries around the heart. Hawthorn may also work indirectly by widening blood vessels resulting in lower blood pressure. In Germany, a standardised extract of hawthorn leaves and flowers has long been available on prescription for mild heart failure. Hawthorn extract is available in teas, tinctures, liquid extractions and capsules and is considered to be safe to use in doses ranging from 160mg - 900mg divided into 2 or 3 doses daily. While hawthorn is known for being excellent for the heart, it can interact with prescription medications taken for heart conditions. Medications for other heart concerns, arrhythmia, high blood pressure and male sexual dysfunction are also known to interact with hawthorn. Time for a disclaimer and to remind you that heart failure and heart disease are serious conditions that require medical supervision and intervention. If you are thinking of introducing hawthorn into your diet you should have a chat with your GP or pharmacist. Before Western medicine became the norm, hawthorn was used as a medicine for well over two thousand years right across the globe. In ancient Greece, hawthorn was used to treat heart problems and chest pain. In Chinese medicine, it was used to improve the circulatory system and aid in digestion. Europeans have long used hawthorn as a general tonic, a diuretic and astringent. In the United States, doctors have been using hawthorn for circulatory and respiratory conditions since the 18th century. Before then, it was well-regarded in Native American medicine and is still used today, as a tea or tonic for longevity among the elders. Hawthorn continues to be widely studied and prescribed for its heart strengthening and protecting properties. As the demand for safe, effective alternatives for treating disease grows, increased scientific research is being carried out on many plant remedies of old. The standard of studies and recording of results is in itself a science, but without this kind of research the use of natural plant-based medicine would remain with the faeries, in folklore. Hawthorn, historically used for kidney and bladder stones, as a diuretic, for digestive complaints and love sickness is now one of the most widely used heart tonic in Europe. The Hawthorn tree belonging to the Crataegus genus, is native of Europe, Northern America and Northern Asia. Its botanical name, Crataegus comes from the Greek word Kratos, meaning strength – most likely relating to its hard wood although our ancestors would liken it to strengthening the heart.
ORIGINAL KERRY
Hawthorn extracts are typically produced from the aerial parts of the plant – the leaves, flowers and berries with most clinical data supporting its cardiac benefits based upon studies of the dried flowering parts. Hawthorn’s leaves, berries, and flowers all contain substantial amounts of procyanidins and flavonoids, the substances that are most likely responsible for the plant’s medicinal properties. These are powerful antioxidants also found in blackberries, cherries, blueberries and red grapes. Well-established research into the medicinal properties of hawthorn and its effect on the heart is very promising and may contribute to a safe and effective treatment for cardiovascular problems down the line. With cardiovascular disease (CVD) one of the leading causes of death in Ireland, it is no wonder that the Faeries are adamant on protecting the hawthorn tree.

Young hawthorn leaves and blossoms are best harvested now in early Summer for making teas, tinctures and tonics. They are noted for a musky smell when cut fresh which disappears once dried. In pre-Christian times, the smell was considered an aphrodisiac, encouraging lusty courting in the fields and ditches across Ireland (which is also good for the heart). Once Christianity took hold, the smell was downgraded to that of a rotting corpse, and that put an end to that! Berries harvested in the Autumn and Winter are often used to make brandies, vinegars, syrups, jams and jellies. The long season between the first leaves, then the flowers and finally the berries ensures that we have a hearty supply of hawthorn for most of the year.
Reopened at our new location on lower Green St.
The cardiac benefits most noted in studies include improved coronary artery blood flow and improved blood flow to the extremities (circulation). Hawthorn has also shown positive effects in related conditions such as angina, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and some arrhythmias. It is believed

Dingle Notes Richie Williams PARKING APPEAL. With what we hope will be another busy summer season this year the Business Chamber wish to appeal to all employees who travel to work by car to park their vehicles on the periphory of town and not take up valuable town centre spaces for long periods. Research has shown that the town centre parking spaces can turn over at least twice every hour and this really helps to attract business to all outlets and services. This in turn helps support the continuous employment which is critical to so many families here in the Peninsula. Please think before you park and a short walk to and from work surely can only be good for ones mental and physical health. PHOENIX CINEMA. The Save The Phoenix committee are making great efforts to ensure this wonderful Dykegate Street facility will remain in local ownership and available as a multi purpose venue for both arts and cultural activities. Farming News
Convergence will continue throughout the new CAP, reaching a minimum of 85% by 2026 in “equal steps”.
Louis Murchan
According to the DAFM, the proposed level of convergence, reaching a minimum value of 85% of the average by 2026, will see a new average payment entitlement value of an estimated €158.68. It added that the minimum payment entitlement value will reach €134.88 by 2026 under this scheme.
BPS DEADLINE 2022: Final Warning, The deadline for application to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) for the 2022 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is fast approaching. Farmers are reminded that the BPS closing date is midnight on May 16. This is also the closing date for a number of other applications. These include: 1. Transfer of Entitlements; 2. Young Farmer/National Reserve; 3. Straw Incorporation Measure; 4. Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme; 5. Protein Aid Scheme. The crops declared on the 2022 BPS will also determine eligibility for the Tillage Incentive Scheme and the Protein Aid Scheme.
Regarding Entitlements Clawback, if you currently sell entitlements without land in Ireland, there is a 20% clawback. For example, if you sold ten entitlements without land, the recipient would get eight of these entitlements. The two that are clawed back go to the National Reserve to help fund that. Of course, the price that the recipient pays is reflective of the eight rather than the ten that you were selling. However, DAFM proposes to lift that clawback completely for two years, in 2023 and 2024. But they also proposes a new clawback for new leases of entitlements from 2023, whereby a farmer leases out all or most of their entitlements on a shorter-term basis. In this case, if a farmer leases out more than 80% of their entitlements for less than five years, there will be a 10% clawback per lease. So, If you have ten entitlements and in 2023, you lease out nine or ten of them for less than five years, then the recipient will get 10% less. When the lease ends, you will get back my entitlements, minus that 10%. If you do a lease for two or three years, the 10% is per lease, rather than annual.
Advisors are working around the clock, so if you haven’t contacted your advisor, don’t be surprised if it is difficult to get through. Act now!
The benefits of this supposedly include facilitation of farm succession, security for those renting, increased protection of the environment and ensuring active farmers (and their payments) are protected.
SILAGE SUPPORT SCHEME
CHANGES TO NITRATES DEROGATION FROM 2022:
The Minister for Agriculture has said the aim of a new silage support scheme "is to support farmers, particularly in the livestock sector, beef and sheep." He is finalising the details of the funding plan, which he has brought to the Cabinet for approval. Livestock farmers will be able to avail of up to €1,000 under the scheme and the scheme, worth up to €55 million, is to encourage farmers to store sufficient fodder for animals next winter. It is stated that this scheme will incentivise beef and sheep farmers to sow fodder, hay or silage and pay up to a maximum of 10 hectares at €100 per hectare.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has outlined the terms and conditions for the Nitrates Derogation for 2022, with some small but important differences. The terms and conditions document published recently on the department’s website is broadly the same as the corresponding document from last year.
With ongoing prices increases in feed, fuel, fertiliser, and other agriculture inputs, beef and sheep farmers have been demanding help from the Government, with many saying the viability of their enterprises are threatened. A recent analysis of Irish farming found that beef and sheep sectors are facing severe losses due to production costs, with family farms suffering income declines between 13% and 25% in 2022, and also found production costs on cattle farms are 24% to 30% up compared to 2021, with cattle prices expected to rise 12-16%. It also said that sheep meat prices are forecast to rise 10%, but production costs of 30% are expected. Unfortunately, though, it is not proposed to be open to dairy farmers. At current fertiliser prices this will support farmers to purchase approximately one tonne. Much more is going to be needed in order to ensure that fodder security and indeed food security for next autumn and winter. This is an opportunity for all to subsidise their silage costs. The application process has not been announced yet, but when it is, every one who produces silage/hay/etc should apply, and avail of this funding. ENTITLEMENTS CLAWBACK: WHAT IS CHANGING IN THE NEXT CAP? The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed that all entitlement values will change in 2023. It has planned changes for the clawback mechanism around the sale and leasing of entitlements from next year onwards under the next CAP. No new allocation in the draft regulations – no ‘reference years’ The number of entitlements stays the same. However, the value of each is adjusted to match the funding ceiling. According to the DAFM, the new average will be in the region of €155-160; All entitlement values will fall into a range from approximately €130-€285 by 2026;
There are, however, some points that farmers looking to obtain a derogation may want to watch out for. Last year’s conditions noted that a farmer who failed to comply with the conditions would have their derogation removed and this would be considered in future applications. However, the 2022 conditions say outright that farmers who do not comply will not be eligible for the derogation in 2023. In 2022, requests from farmers to withdraw from the derogation will be accommodated, provided that the farmer has not been notified of an inspection. There is also a slight change to the date between which a farmer cannot exceed a crude protein content of 15% in concentrate feed for grazing livestock. These dates have been shifted forward by 15 days. This year, concentrate feed cannot exceed this level of crude protein between April 15 and September 30; last year this period was between April 1 and September 15. As in previous years, commonage land will not be eligible for the derogation. However, whereas the standard limit of 170kg of nitrogen (N) per hectare applied on commonage in the past, a new limit for these lands of 50kg N/ha will apply this year. For new applicants to the derogation who do not have soil analysis results, they will be deemed to have a phosphorus (P) index of 4 on the Teagasc Soil Index System. In previous years, new applicants were deemed to have a P index of 3. Having index figures for various soil elements are a requirement for the development of a nutrient management plan (NMP), which the farmer must draw up to avail of the derogation. Soil analysis is performed once every four years for each homogenous area of the holding, with at least one analysis per 5ha of land. In 2022, a farmer’s NMP shall be revised no later than seven days following any change in agricultural practices on grassland, including a soil analysis. However, for farmers who are participating in the department’s Pilot Soil Sampling Programme, if soil results are obtained after March 15, there will not be a requirement to update the the 2022 NMP, provided that original soil samples used in the NMP are still valid.
Transfers are still possible in what the DAFM described as “the usual way”. However, it confirmed that there are some changes planned around clawback;
In terms of slurry application dates, all slurry generated on the holding must be applied by October 8, this year. The requirement to apply 50% of slurry by June 15, remains.
In recent weeks, farmers received a statement of entitlements for 2022, which sets the value of entitlements for this year. Furthermore, the DAFM confirmed that farmers will receive another statement around February 2023 for the entirety of the new CAP;
Nitrates Derogation applicants who applied for the derogation in 2020 or 2021 must have completed all elements of a training programme in nutrient use efficiency and the protection of waters, under training guidelines issued in 2021.
10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
New applicants or those who did not apply for the Nitrates Derogation in either of the last two years must complete this training programme by December 31, of this year. For clover incorporation in the reseeding of swards, the exact amount of clover has been outlined in the 2022 terms and conditions. All new grass reseeds on the grassland farm shall incorporate at least 1.5kg/ ha of naked clover seed or at least 2.5kg/ha of pelleted clover. There is also more detailed guidance issued on the farm liming programme. The liming programme must be four years in duration with a minimum of 25% of lime spread in the first year, and the balance applied over the remaining three years, where necessary. Any lime applied following soil sampling, but prior to the commencement of the liming programme, will be taken into account and can be deducted from the total liming requirement. Receipts for lime purchased and spread must be retained by the applicant and made available for inspection if required. For farmers who wish to plough grassland, this can be done up to May 31, this year; the final date for this was April 30, in previous years. Finally, when fulfilling the requirement to plant a crop with high nitrogen demand in ploughed grassland, this must be done no later than three weeks after the ploughing (terms and conditions in previous years did not outline such a time limit).

Dingle Global Education
Dingle Global Education will welcome students from University of California Santa Cruz to Dingle for a four week program starting from 25th June. The professor from this group, Prof Steve Coulter has a long history with Dingle, having lived here for over 10 years. Ag tosnú ar 25ú Meitheamh, cuirfidh Dingle Global Education fáilte roimh scoláirí ón University of California Santa Cruz go dtí an Daingean i gcomhair clár ceithre seachtaine. Tá sean-taithí ag Oide an ghrúpa seo, Steve Coulter, ar an Daingean, ós rud é gur chaith sé breis agus 10 mbliana ina chónaí anseo. Dingle Global Education was founded by Seán Pól Ó Conchúir and Lenka Uí Chonchúir in 2021. We are passionate about giving international students an opportunity to come to Dingle to learn about our history, culture and traditions. Our motto is Travel, Learn Experience and we plan on bringing many groups to Dingle in the future to do just that in the years to come.
Dingle Global Education are delighted to welcome our first group of students to Dingle. 20 students from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia arrived with their Professor, Dr. Chris Dobbins in Dingle on the 24th April. The course Music, Folklore, and Literature of Ireland will last for four weeks. Tá áthas mór ar Dingle Global Education fáilte a chur roimh ár gcéad ghrúpa scoláirí léinn go dtí an Daingean. Bhain 20 scoláire ó Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia an baile amach lena n-Ollamh, Dr. Chris Dobbins, ar 24ú Aibreán. Beidh Cúrsa i gCeol, Béaloideas agus Litríocht na hÉireann ar siúl acu anseo ar feadh ceithre seachtaine.
Bunaíodh Dingle Global Education ag Seán Pól Ó Conchúir agus Lenka Uí Chonchúir sa bhliain 2021. Creidimid go láidir i bhfiúntas deis a thabhairt do scoláirí idirnáisiúnta teacht go Corca Dhuibhne chun foghlaim faoinár stair, cultúr agus traidisiúin. Ár mana ná Taisteal, Foghlaim, Blais agus tá sé i gceist againn a lán grúpaí a thabhairt go Corca Dhuibhne sna blianta amach romhainn chun díreach na rudaí sin a dhéanamh. Finally, we are very thankful to the community here in Corca Dhuibhne who have shown our students a céad mile fáilte. Our students feel very much at home here and that is down to the people who live here. Mar fhocal scoir, táimid thar a bheith buíoch don bpobal anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne as na múrtha fáilte a chur roimh ár scoláirí. Braitheann ár scoláirí go mór ar a suaimhneas anseo agus tá sé sin amhlaidh de bharr na ndaoine a chónaíonn sa dúthaigh.
Classes are held in An Díseart where students are in awe of the building and the beautiful gardens; indeed some classes were held in the garden such was the beautiful weather over the past two weeks. We are very appreciative of the board and staff of An Díseart who arranged to renovate Sister De Sales’ apartment (Arasás an tSúir de Sales) into a classroom for us. Reachtáltar na ranganna in An Díseart, mar a mbíonn na scoláirí faoi dhraíocht ag áilleacht an fhoirgnimh agus na ngáirdíní; agus bhí cuid de na ranganna ar siúl sna gairdíní, fiú, as ucht na haimsire áille a bhí ann le coicís anuas. Táimid fíorbhuíoch do bhord agus foireann An Díseart a d'eagraigh athchóiriú Arasáin an tSiúr de Sales mar sheomra ranga dúinn. Our students get to experience many different facets of the Dingle peninsula from academic field trips to holy wells and spiritual/archaeology sites to listening to local guest speakers enthral the students with local stories, music and local traditions. Students also get to enjoy the many different outdoor activities that Dingle is famous for; kayaking, horse-riding and hillwalking. They also got to experience Féile na Bealtaine which they loved. Bíonn deis ag ár scoláirí taithí a fháil ar go leor gnéithe de shaol Chorca Dhuibhne, idir thurasanna páirce acadúla go toibreacha naofa agus suíomhanna spioradálta / seandálaíochta, agus a bheith ag éisteacht le haoi-chainteoirí ag roinnt scéalta, ceol agus traidisiúin áitiúla. Anuas air sin, bíonn na scoláirí ag baint taitneamh as na himeachtaí amuigh faoin aer ar a bhfuil cáil ar Chorca Dhuibhne dá mbarr; cadhcáil, marcaíocht capaill agus sléibhteoireacht ina measc. Bhíodar anseo d'Fhéile na Bealtaine i mbliana leis, rud a bhaineadar an-sult as. The Irish language is an integral part of our community here and students are learning a cúpla focal to be able to say ‘hello’, ‘thank you’, introduce themselves and of course talk about the weather. Tá an Ghaolainn ina cuid lárnach d'ár bpobal anseo, agus tá na scoláirí ag foghlaim cúpla focal di chun go mbeidh siad in ann 'Dia Dhuit' agus 'Go raibh maith agat!' a rá, iad féin a chur in aithne agus, dar ndóigh, labhairt faoin aimsir!

le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne – Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar Is ait an rud é pobal. Tá sé tábhachtach – fiú riachtanach – don gcuid is mó do dhaoine. Is féidir é a chruthú – ‘sé deacair gan é a chruthú; tarlaíonn sé go nádúrtha – ach ag an am céanna, má dheintear iarracht smacht nó srian a choimeád ar phobal áirithe, loiteann sé an rud féin. “Fine line,” mar a deirtear. Bhuail an smaoineamh doimhin mé (is ea; táim ana dhoimhin) agus mé ag féachaint ar an leath-mharatóin timpeall Chinn Sléibhe cúpla lá ó shin. Na daoine a thagann chun an cúrsa a rith, is pobal iad. Fiú i ngan fhios dóibh féin no gan é a chruthú d'aon ghno. Na daoine leis na cótaí hi-vis a chabhraíonn, is pobal iad. Agus ansan tá na pleidhcí cosúil liomsa a sheasann ar thaobh an bhóthair ag obair ana dhian ag bualadh bos nó ag drumadóireacht (fair plé Ian) nó ag tabhairt tacaíochta i slí éigin (agus ní fiosracht amháin atá i gceist, cé go bhfuil blaiseadh beag (ahem) de sin ann chomh maith. Muidne go léir ag tabhairt rud éigin, ach ag fáil rud éigin as chomh maith. Agus sin croí an scéil – cén fáth go dtagaimid le chéile nuair is féidir an rud céanna a dhéanamh sa bhaile inár n-aonar? “Hell is other people,” a dúirt Sartre. Cén fáth go n-íocann daoine táille chun dul isteach i rás, airgead a chaitheamh ar lóistín agus taisteal, agus iarracht mhór a dhéanamh traenáil go dian, am a chur ar leataobh agus dul go háit i bhfad uathu, nuair is féidir cos amháin a chur os comhair cos eile sa bhaile agus gan pingin a íoc? Gan dabht, an tírdreacht timpeall na dúichí seo. Gan dabht, an craic – rud atá deacair gan daoine eile timpeall ort. Ach an teacht le chéile – sin bun agus barr an scéil. Spreagann daoine daoine eile. Tugann siad fuinneamh dá chéile. Ní gá ainm a bheith agat; ní gá aithne dá laghad a bheith agat ar éinne eile sa ghrúpa, ach tá sibh le chéile, ag roinnt rud éigin, ag cothú atmaisféir agus ag cruthú cuimhní. Sin cúis amháin go raibh an t-aifreann chomh tábhachtach don bhfórmhór tráth dá raibh, agus go bhfuil na mílte caillte gan é – ach ina áit, tagann díseart, grúpaí macnaimh, onórú de shaghsanna eile, m.sh. spórt nó ceol. Caithfidh daoine braistint mar bhall de rud. Sin cuid den gcúis gur chuas amach agus sheasas ar feadh dhá uair a chloig ag bualadh bos go dtí nach rabhas in ann mo lámha a bhraistint (agus seo fiú gan traenáil – táim dochreidte; t’fhios agam). Ní hamháin go rabhas ag tabhairt tacaíochta; bhíos ag fáil saghas duais mé féin – buíochas stróinséirí; ordóg in airde anseo is ansiúd; miongháire, cúpla focal; fiú jócanna ó na daoine le go leor anála (“You wouldn’t have a spare defibrillator, would ya?!”) – é sin le rá, AITHEANTAS. Nasc. Ceangailt. Agus, go ginearálta, “Good vibes, man.” Ar feadh cúpla uair a chloig is cuid de ghrúpa tú; sochaí beag; náisiún beag bídeach. Féile na Bealtaine – an coiste; is pobal amháin iad siúd. Na comhlachtaí agus grúpaí ar fad a chuireann taispeántas nó seó ar stáitse nó i láthair; pobal eile. Agus na daoine ar fad a thagann; pobal ollmhór. Fiú muna dtéann tú go dtí an gceolchoirm nó an dráma nó an léiriúchán céanna le dream eile, tá sibh go léir ann. Tá sibh páirteach. Nuair a dhéantar obair dheonach, nuair a fhreastlaítear ar scoil, ollscoil, clubanna nó cumann – tá níos mó i gceist ná, mar shampla, comhar creidmheasa a rith, cluiche cispheile a imirt, nó múineadh do dhaoine conas beachaireacht, cé gur rudaí an-tábhachtachta iad siúd iontu féin; tógann na grúpaí seo daoine éagsúla le chéile chun taithí a roinnt; chun foghlaim agus spreagadh a chéile; chun eachtra speisialta (agus gnáth-eachtra ag an am céanna), suntasach a chruthú – nach dtarlóidh riamh arís díreach sa slí céanna. Ní gá é a rá arís ach sin cuid den gcúis go raibh an saol chomh deacair le dhá bhliain anuas. Sin cuid den gcúis go bhfuil sé chomh deacair Putin agus a leithéid a thuiscint – ag scriosadh pobal in ionad é a tharraingt le chéile. Ach ag an am céanna is dócha go ndéanaimid go léir é, fiú ar bhonn i bhfad níos lú – ag tabhairt breithiúnais ar dhaoine; ag caitheamh go maith le duine amháin agus ní ró-dheas le daoine eile; i slí amháin loiteann rudaí mar sin pobal, ach cruthaíonn siad do phobal beag féin duit chomh maith (“Aontaím leis an ndream seo, ach ní leis an ndream sin”). Baineann sé le braistint mar bhall de rud éigin. Sin an chúis gur chuas as mo mheabhair agus chaitheas níos mó ná cúpla céad euro ar thicéidí do cheoldrámaí nuair a d’oscail na amharclainne arís – seóanna i mBÁC, agus mise le leanbh an-óg, agus gur chasas cúpla lá le déanaí beagnach ag seasamh ar mo cheann chun oibriú amach conas go mbeinn in ann freastal orthu. “Ag tabhairt tacaíochta dos na h-ealaíona,” mar dhea. Ha! D’fhéadfainn é sin a dhéanamh ón mbaile, ar an idirlíon, le deontas. Cé go bhfuil sé fíor go bhfuilim ag tabhairt tacaíochta agus go raibh sé sin
i gceist agam chomh maith, ní sin an príomhrud a bhí ar intinn agam. Bhíos ag tnúth le bheith sa lucht féachana arís, ag gáire i dteannta daoine eile, ag gol, ag bualadh bos, agus ag gearán faoin duine nár mhúch an fón póca. Beidh mé ann. Déanfaidh sé difríocht má táim. Cruthóidh mé glór agus fuinneamh i measc na sluaite agus beimid mar ghrúpa mór glórmhór fuinniúil le chéile. Ba chuma sa tsioc liom bheith mar chuid den bpobal san áit ina bhfuilim i mo chónaí dhá bhliain ó shin nuair a bhogas anseo ar dtús. Agus níor thuigeas conas ar aon nós. Ní fhéadfainn na deiseanna a fheiscint. Ach cím anois iad. An rás rothaíochta; siúlóid le comharsan; mórshiúil Lá Fhéile Phádraig; ní gá do na rudaí seo bheith ar bharr an liosta agat, ach is deiseanna iad an spiorad pobail sin a mhothú; nach féidir cur síos air go cruinn. Dul chuig Óstán Chorca Dhuibhne agus, “Fáilte,” a rá leis na h-Úcránaigh. Siopadóireacht a dhéanamh go h-áitiúil in ionad ar an idirlíon; b’fhéidir go gcosnaíonn sé níos mó, ach ní féidir luach a chur ar an bhfáiltiú nó an seirbhís phearsanta. Tá daoine ann, gan dabht, agus fanann siad amach ó dhaoine eile, grúpaí, pobal, srl. A rogha féin ag gach éinne. Daoine eile, agus is leor pobal beirte. Tá pobal amháin i mo thig féin; ceann eile sa chlann; ceann sa cheantar; cinn eile a bhaineann le caitheamh aimsire, cinn eile ón oideachas nó obair scaipthe go forleathan; cinn eile fiú ar Whatsapp! Agus buíochas le Dia go bhfuil. Bheinn caillte gan iad. Cad é nó iad na pobail as a bhfuileann tusa buíoch inniu?

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry
old son named Thomas. The name ‘Pester’ is found mainly in Devon. It is derived from AngloNorman French - Pestour a ‘Baker’.
Ted Creedon
Isabella Restrick, 26, and her son James, 2, lived in Annascaul. She was recorded as ‘Head of the Household’ on the census form. There was no mention of a husband but an examination of Census form A for the local R.I.C barracks shows that ‘R’, 41, was the sergeant and a ‘Peace Officer’.
In this issue we continue with the theme of Unusual Surnames recorded in the 1901 Census in West Kerry, from Camp to Dunquin, which was taken on Sunday 31 March. Meeke John Meeke, 63, lived on The Mall, Dingle. His occupation was ‘Clerk of Works’. He was born in England. His wife, M.J.R Meeke was a Church of Ireland teacher and she was born in ‘King’s County’ (Offaly). They had a son and a daughter living with them. They had another son, John Robert, who was a Medical Officer in Bonny, Nigeria. He was on his way back to Ireland on board the mail steamer Bonny in November 1897 but died on board and was buried at sea. Cause of death unknown.
Restrick
The surnames of R.I.C. members were usually withheld from the Census. Nurse John and Julia Nurse and their nine children were a farming family living in Coolroe, Castlegregory, in 1901. The surname is believed to be Old French in origin and was an occupational name for a wet nurse or foster mother. Roddy Peter Roddy, aged 44, was the senior light-keeper on the Tearaght lighthouse in March 1901. He was married and a native of County Louth. The name is believed to be the Anglicised version of the old Irish name Ó Rodaigh. Goodman
The 2,700 ton steamer, which was operated by the British and African Steam Navigation Company at the time, was sunk by a German U-boat off Tuskar Rock in 1915.
Thomas Goodman, aged 71, lived in a house in Ballyameentrant, near Dingle, with his sister Mary, aged 60. He was a farmer and a widower. He was also a retired Royal Navy paymaster. The origin of the name is too extensive to be recorded here.
Isaac
Stretton
Abraham Isaac, 73, lived in the townland of Ballyknockane (Camp) with his wife Elizabeth, 70, and daughter Ada Mary, 34. He was the Church of Ireland Rector of Kilgobbin and was ‘Dean of Ardfert’ from 1895 until his death in 1906.
In the last issue we had the surname name Tretton – and now the name Stretton. John Stretton was a farm servant living in the house of Thomas Goodman above. He was aged 20 and single. The name is said to be derived from numerous places named ‘Stretton’ in Britain.
There were three servants in the house on Census night. Julia Moriarty, 34, was the ‘Cook’ and spoke Irish and English. Timothy Griffin, 21, was a ‘General Labourer’. Nearest to the Pin on the 5th Hole was Eoghan O’Laoire. Fortunately for the main sponsor, Kellihers Garage Tralee, no one won the fabulous Toyota Plug-In Hybrid parked outside the clubhouse—the dream prize for the Hole in One! Former men’s captain at Ceann Sibéal and Friend of St James’, Eric Prestage, presented the prizes. Speaking at the ceremony, Alison Groves, Chair of the Friends of St James’, said the success of the event was down to the incredible hard work of the small team of volunteers and the “dream team” in Ceann Sibéal. She thanked all the local businesses in West Kerry and Tralee who sponsored teams, tee boxes, and draw prizes and the golfers who came out to support the event.

“It is very heartening for us that the local community is so supportive of our endeavours to restore and enhance St James’ Church and that people realise that we are working to save this building for everyone as a shared community, cultural, and spiritual space”. Alison spoke about what they have achieved to date and the group’s background—a secular non-profit, set up to access public funding and whose board is supported by an advisory group with representatives from the local community, tourism, heritage and the parish. She said that ongoing talks continue at local parish level to progress a long-term lease on the building from the Representative Body of the Church of Ireland. Only then will the Friends be able to start the restoration programme for which planning permission is already in place. 18 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Baked Pasta with Sausage and Ricotta By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School Add in the tomatoes and chili flakes. Cook this for a few minutes to allow it to thicken. Add in the reserved pasta water. Add in the pasta, mozzarella and ricotta, use a large spoon or spatula to mix this all well. Taste and season if needed (remember the cheese will have some salt). Sprinkle parmesan over the top and place in the oven for about 1520 minutes. Once ready remove from the oven and wait for about 5 minutes before serving. Here is a simple dinner recipe that is full of flavour and will be a definitive crowd favourite. I always love dishes like this that get mixed together and added to a tray and then popped in the oven. One little tip that works great for any baked pasta dish, is to cook the pasta in boiling salted water for about 5 minutes. This always helps the pasta to be just right when it comes out of the oven. Serve with a green salad. Serves 4 Ingredients 300g sausages, each cut into 3 pieces 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ tsp. fennel seeds
Serve with a green salad or garlic bread. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland We would like to welcome our Ukrainian friends to the Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne. Seeing the trauma of the war in Ukraine and the heartbreak for families being split up and mothers and children having to flee, the small solace is that for our new visitors, they are coming to a special place where there is well being in our landscape, our people and local heritage. We hope they will be as happy as they can be here on the Dingle Peninsula. We know that our local welcome and generousity has already been so warm to our Ukrainian families and the team at NEWKD have been doing a wonderful job. If any of our tourism members (and many already have) would like to offer a visit, an activity or experience over the next few weeks, please contact Simone at dinglept@gmail.com and we will connect you with NEWKD’s local coordinators. MICRONEEDDLING
WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedles penetrate the epidermis and dermis layer of skin. The needles generate micro channels into the skin. This gives a pathway for skin products to penetrate more easily, boosting their effectiveness massively. It also promotes the natural reproduction of collagen and elastin by stimulating the body’s natural wound healing process and to produce natural collagen. Improves skin texture, reduces fine lines and wrinkle dept and improves the appearance of old marks and scars.
Book in before May 21st for a FREE skin consult with our skin scanner to have your own personalised skincare plan created and to avail of all our offers. We offer an indept consultation that includes our revolutionary skin scanner that helps us see beneath the top layer of the skin. This allows us to determine the most beneficial course of in-salon treatments and at home skincare that best suits your skin and concerns. We offer a range of different peels using high performance ranges such as Image skincare, Image MD and Ultraceuticals. Peels help to improve the skin texture, brighten and reduce lines and wrinkles, lighten pigmentation, treat congestion and even out skin tone. We also offer a full range of in salon treatments such as manicures, tinting, waxing, brows and lashes. We pride ourselves on continuously upskilling and updating the treatments we offer to you.

What a beautiful morning to do our bit for those in need of our help. It was a great community effort from all age groups as more than sixty people set off in the darkness to complete their 5k. Have you ever aired your marital dirty laundry in public? That’s exactly what West Kerry’s own Julie Jay and her husband Fred Cooke are planning to do when they take to the stage of Siamsa Tíre in Tralee on May 21st. Julie Jay is one of Ireland’s most highly-praised contemporary comics. She established herself as a comedic force as a support act for the likes of Ardal O’Hanlon, Tommy Tiernan, and Des Bishop. She now hosts the popular Up to 90 and Crimeland podcasts. She also regularly appears across a wide range of Irish TV and radio shows and has written articles for RTÉ Lifestyle, The Sunday Times, and The Sunday Independent.
FILM FESTIVAL: All good wishes to Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly and Shane Crowley who have been nominated for an award at Cannes Film Festival. Lets hope they will be successful.
Her husband Fred is just as highly regarded. Currently, he is probably best known as the MC on The Tommy Tiernan Show but previously, he has been a series regular on The Fear and on The Republic of Telly as well as a performer at major festivals and venues such as Glee, The Comedy Shore, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
DRIVERS NEEDED: to deliver Dinners from Killorglin Day Centre one day a week. If you are willing to deliver a dinner to someone in need in the locality. Please ring 066 9790907. One Hour once a week.
The pair married last year and are parents to Ted. Their show is called ‘Getting Out For The Night’ and when Julie was asked what it was about, she quipped that “it was either this or couple’s counselling”.

Small Changes Sustainable Posies
that fresh cut flowers provide. Do not leave any leaves on the stem that will end up below the water line as they will rot and reduce the water quality. Cut stems at an angle (under water if possible) so that stems are not resting on the bottom of the vase, sealing the flowers from drawing up fresh water. Do not crush the stems and use warm water rather than cold water (with the exception of spring flowers like daffodils and tulips). Use flower food if it is provided (or alternatively use a homemade version such as 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 litre of water) and change the water every few days. Always keep displays away from full sun, heat sources and drafts and also away from fruit bowls as the ethylene gas fruit produces will speed up flower aging. When the flowers have reached the end of their lifespan always compost them or place them in the brown waste bin so that they do not end up in landfill.
Dingle Heating & Plumbing Gifting flowers is a common way to communicate emotions ranging from an apology or sympathy to love, friendship and gratitude. Studies have shown that flowers can reduce stress, anxiety and pain. The scent of freshly cut flowers can help you unwind and even sleep. They are used by cultures all across the globe to mark rites of passage and significant life events as well as to celebrate festivals. It should be no surprise that this drives a worldwide industry worth billions of euro. In Ireland alone the market for fresh flowers, foliage and wreaths in 2020 was €97 million. Like many other trades of this scales, floriculture can have significant environmental and social impacts. There are currently no figures for Ireland but it is estimated that 90% of fresh cut flowers sold in the UK are imported. Most flowers for the European market are imported via the Netherlands where large flower auctions are held but many of the blooms are grown in equatorial East Africa because of their suitable climates and very low labour costs. To ensure the blooms arrive in optimal condition, they are transported the long distances in energy guzzling refrigerated containers. Most of the flowers are grown in industrial scale greenhouses which can require intensive irrigation systems placing enormous pressure on the freshwater resources of these developing countries. The cut flower industry is not regulated in the same way as other agricultural sectors so many toxic chemicals can often be used in their production, especially in developing countries where chemical use is loosely regulated. Pesticide treated seeds, chemical fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and preservatives are very damaging to water and soil not to mention the effects they have on local populations of pollinators. Prolonged exposure to chemicals also has a detrimental impact on the health of people growing and handling the flowers. Wastage in this industry is a huge issue. Approximately 45% of all flowers produced die before they get to the point of sale or are sold. Aside from the wasted resources and energy required to produce these flowers in the first place, blooms which end up in landfill contribute to greenhouse gases as they rot. Further waste is generated from the plastic wrapping used to bundle most floral bouquets sold in supermarkets and forecourts. This is not an insignificant source of packaging waste considering 67% of all flowers on the market in Ireland are sold in supermarkets and discounters. There is very little transparency in the supply chain of imported flowers as they are not governed by rules of origin. Therefore, if choosing to buy imported flowers try to purchase bouquets with fairtrade or Florvede sustainable flower certification. However the most sustainable cut flowers are those which are in season and grown locally. Members of the Flower Farmers of Ireland (www.flowerfarmersofireland. ie) such as Maura’s Cottage Flowers from Tralee and newcomers Milo and George in Inch, focus on producing and selling beautiful seasonal, pollinator friendly, scented and sustainable blooms. In addition to a close to zero carbon footprint, local Irish grown blooms have the added bonus of a longer vase life. Ordering seasonal posies and arrangements from talented local florists such as The Dingle Druid and Dingle Blooms is another great way to support small local businesses and allows you to request sustainable packaging i.e. no floral foam, no plastic wrap. Prolonging the life of a bouquet extends the enjoyment and benefits

What's Happening in The Hub? Anaerobic Digestion “We have an energy security problem… We have to be self reliant and a community like Dingle… can reduce its emissions in transport. I would love to see a community-based digestor in Dingle… there could be minibuses running on bio-methane... produced in Dingle.” - Professor Jerry D. Murphy (MaREI) This is just one of the takeaway points from our recent session on Anaerobic Digestion (AD) held at Dingle Hub. AD delivers a renewable fuel source from biodegradable material like slurry, grass and food waste. We gathered a panel of experts on AD from the Bioeconomy Research Groups of MTU and MaREI, alongside other interested parties from across the Peninsula and further afield. Soláthraíonn díleá anaeróbach foinse inathnuaite breosla atá bunaithe ar ábhair in-bhithmhillte ar nós sciodair, féir agus dramhaíola bia. Ag tógáil ar an staidéar féidearthachta atá críochnaithe cheana féin, agus le súil an díleá anaeróbach a fhorbairt i gCorca Dhuibhne, chualamar an t-eolas is déanaí faoin teicneolaíocht seo. D'fhreagair na saineolaithe ceisteanna ón bpobal a bhí ina dteannta ar-líne don seimineár gréasáin, agus is féidir leat dul siar air seo anois – tá an seimineár ar fáil ar ár gcainéal YouTube. Building on the feasibility study already completed and with a view to development of AD on the Dingle Peninsula, we heard the latest perspectives on this technology. The experts answered questions from the public who had joined the webinar online. You can catch-up now - the webinar is now available on our YouTube channel. Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe – Trip to the Burren
After an early start from West Kerry, we met Brendan in Tubber, where he gave a fascinating account of how the Burren Programme evolved as a farmer-led project. Participation is optional but the majority of farmers in the Burren are active participants. Simplicity is the key to their approach - there’s no paperwork involved for the farmers, who get paid for individual measures which support biodiversity. Participants can earn up to €10,000 annually for supplying these ‘eco-services’. We spent time in the Burren National Park where Brendan talked about the positive impacts of the farmers’ work on nature before heading to Killnaboy for lunch in the famous parochial house from TV show Father Ted! Later we spoke with more farmers involved in the Burren Programme. The journey back to West Kerry allowed for plenty of lively discussion on all that we had seen and the possibility of establishing a similar scheme in West Kerry. Food for thought! Chaitheamar tamall i bPáirc Náisiúnta na Boirne, mar ar labhair Brendan faoin tionchar dearfach a bhíonn ag obair na bhfeirmeoirí ar an dúlra. Ansin chuamar ar aghaidh go Cill Iníon an Bhaoith don lón i dTigh cáiliúil na Sagart ón gclár teilifíse Father Ted! Níos déanaí, labhraíomar lena thuilleadh feirmeoirí atá bainteach le Clár na Boirne. Thug an turas abhaile go Corca Dhuibhne deis mhaith chainte dúinn chun gach a bhí feidthe againn a phlé, chomh maith leis an bhféidearthacht go mbunófaí a leithéid de scéim i gCorca Dhuibhne. Ábhar machnamh, ambaiste! A visit to an anaerobic digestor in Limerick is the next trip for our group. Beidh cuairt ar dhíleátóir anaeróbach i Luimneach mar an gcéad turas eile againn. Féile na Bealtaine We had a ball at Dingle’s Féile na Bealtaine - What a wonderful weekend of activities! Thanks to those who supported us at these events: Voices from the Field - Talks from the farmers and artist involved in Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe, our creative climate action project.
Is tionscadal ar leith é Clár na Boirne i gContae an Chlár a thacaíonn le feirmeoirí chun bainistíocht a dhéanamh ar a gcuid tailte ar bhealaí a thacaíonn leis an mbithéagsúlacht. An mhí seo caite, thug grúpa feirmeoirí as Corca Dhuibhne cuairt ar an gceantar sin, ag bualadh le bainisteoir chláir agus saoi bithéagsúlachta Brendan Dunford chun fáil amach conas mar a oibríonn an tionscadal seo ar mhaithe feirmeoirí agus an dúlra araon.
Film showcase - short drama films and group music videos, produced by students on the Principles of Film workshop (held at Dingle Hub).
The Burren Programme in Clare is a unique project supporting farmers to manage their land in ways that support biodiversity. Last month, a group of West Kerry farmers took a trip there to meet up with programme manager and biodiversity guru, Brendan Dunford and to see how the project works for farmers and nature.
You and Dingle Hub
This group is taking part in our Creative Climate Action project, Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe, A Creative Imagining, led by Dingle Hub - funded by the Creative Climate Action Fund. Tar éis dúinn Corca Dhuibhne a fhágaint go luath ar maidin, bhuaileamar le Brendan ag an Tobar, áit ar thug sé cuntas fíorspéisiúil faoi conas mar a d'fhorbair Clár na Boirne mar thionscadal feirmeoir-stiúrtha. Bíonn rannpháirtíocht sa chlár roghnach, ach tá formhór na bhfeirmeoirí sa dúthaigh ina rannpháirtithe gníomhacha. Is í an tsímplíocht croílár an cur chuige atá acu – níl aon pháipéarachas i gceist do na feirmeoirí, a bhfaigheann díolta as gach beart ar leith a thugann siad faoi a thacaíonn le bithéagsúlacht. Is féidir le rannpháirtithe suas le €10,000 a thuilleamh sa bhliain as na 'héiceasheirbhísí' seo a sholáthar.

Iar-Thosnaitheoirí/Post Beginners
Máirt/Tuesday 31 Bealtaine/May – Satharn 4 Meitheamh/ June Mar atá luaite againn sa tsraith altanna seo cheana seacht gcinn de chrannaíocha uaisle a bhí ag na seana-Ghaeil, an dair, an coll, an cuileann, an t-iúr, an ghiúis, an t-úll agus an fhuinseog. B’shin iad an AIRIG FEDO. Ceann desna radharcanna is mó a mheallann an tsúil againne anseo in Éirinn i mí na Bealtaine ná an crann úll agus é fé bhláth. Bítear ag súil ina dhiaidh sin leis na húlla milse folláine san fhómhar. Siombal na háilleachta, na torthúlachta, na hathnuachana agus an leighis na bláthanna sin i litríocht na hÉireann. Bhí meas riamh ag na Gaeil ar na húlla mar ábhar bídh agus dheintí iad a cheiliúradh sna nósanna a bhain le Samhain. Thugtaí ‘lá maois úll’ ar an lá áirithe san fhómhar go mbailítí na húlla. Luaitear an crann úll in go leor desna scéalta miotaseolaíochta. Luaitear dath an óir agus milseacht thar na bearta leis na húlla ó Eamhain Abhlach nó Magh Meall. Tír na nÓg nó an Tír Tairngire ainmneacha eile ar Eamhain Abhlach, go ndeirtear fúithi go dtugadh daoine daonna cuairt uirthi, go meallfaí daoine chuici nó gurbh ann a raghadh anamacha na marbh. Duine acusan ab ea Mannanán Mac Lir a thug Cormac Mac Airt leis ina threo sin. Bhí naoi gcinn d’úlla órga ar chraobh ar a ghualainn ag Manannán. Chroith sé an chraobh agus deirtear gur chuir ceol na n-úll Cormac fé shuan is fé shuaimhneas is go ndearmaid sé an tuirse agus an traochadh a bhí air láithreach. Luann scéal eile go gcuir Deirdre agus Naoise beirt dá leanaí fé chúram Mhannanáin in Eamhain Abhlach. Úlla blasta draíochta ab ea na húlla ann agus ní ídeofaí go deo iad. Luann scéal faoi Chonnla, mac le Conn Céadchathach gur mhair sé ar feadh míosa ar cheann amháin desna húlla. Tá an téama céanna sa Naomhscéalaíocht. Deintear tagairt i scéal Naomh 34 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
