Water is Life – Drink Up!

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink, a notion that reminds us that even with the opportunity right in front of us, we can ignore the obvious. Perhaps if the horse knew how water is fundamental to all body functions, it would lap it up eagerly and neigh with gratitude. In the fast-paced world of advertising, ordinary water is easily overlooked or seems boring when compared to some of the fancier beverages on offer. Our constant search for the “best thing since sliced pan” confuses the truth about our needs, which is quite ironic, considering sliced pan didn’t turn out that great after all!

If we strip away all the trappings of modern living and focused on our basic survival needs - water, food and shelter make the core list, in that order – everything else is optional. As simple as it is, there has never been so many challenges to the availability, quality and sustainability of these fundamental needs. In Ireland, water is never out of the news from the Irish with pollution, contaminated drinking water, leaks and scattered showers – not a day goes by that we are not reminded of water. Despite this, we are literally dying of thirst because for most of us, we just don’t drink enough of the stuff to hydrate properly.

The human body is made up of sixty percent water, we are predominately water and without water we would die in a matter of days. While this is unlikely to happen here, there is a real risk that we are placing undue stress on every organ and system in the body by not consuming enough water. Age, exercise, body size, level of sweat, health conditions, use of medications and environment are all factors on just how much water we need. All things considered, the average adult needs to replace just over 2.2L daily through fluids and foods, a little more than the eight glasses per day. Juicy fruits and veg, broths, soups and herbal teas can also contribute to your daily quota.

Water is required to regulate temperature in the body, sweating being a good example. Not only does water cool the skin but each bead of sweat takes a little heat away from the body. If we do not drink enough water, are we going to heat up and explode? Probably not, but the body will tire easily and will require longer time for recovery. Good to know if you are exercising or fighting a fever! Water is the carrier of many waste products and toxins via the kidneys and bowel. Dehydration will affect both these organs systems, even at a marginal level. The number one cause of constipation is insufficient fluid supply. High fibre foods in the intestines absorb and hold on to water. This keeps the stool soft, large and easy to pass. If we do not drink enough water, the body will take water from the stool leaving small, hard bits of stool that are uncomfortable to pass.

Kidneys are responsible for the elimination of much of our protein waste by-products, mineral salts, toxins and uric acid. Without a steady, sufficient supply this waste can build up and cause damage to the kidneys and urinary system, affecting joints and other parts of the body. The composition of our blood is governed by the kidneys as it keeps it contents stable. Blood itself is made up of about 90% water, an insufficient intake can raise blood pressure and increase the thickness of the blood.

Poor hydration levels affect our respiratory system, airways can be restricted to minimize water loss, making asthma and allergic symptoms

worse. Water also helps maintain moist airways, prevent mucus building up and loosen secretions in the lungs that may otherwise harbour diseasecausing viruses and bacteria, including Covid-19.

With hayfever a real dose now for many people, it is worth noting that being dehydrated can also trigger histamine release, making symptoms worse and more frequent. When your body is not getting adequate water, histamine production acts as a defensive mechanism to preserve the water remaining in the body. Once your body is dehydrated, the histamine production increases, which causes the body to have the same trigger symptoms as seasonal allergies.

For skin, water is protective both inside and out. A decrease in hydration levels alters skin composition leaving it dry and tight, more prone to UV damage and wrinkling. Comparing a plum with a prune is an easy way to visualize dehydration. Muscles, which are 70% water, suffer from fatigue and tightness when dehydrated making activity harder. Cartilage is 80% water and chronic dehydration affects shock absorption and the protection of joints. The brain is 70% water. Its network of nerves and the spinal cord require fluids to receive and send messages effectively. Small decreases in hydration levels, even before we feel thirsty, are felt first in the nervous system with headaches, loss of concentration and fatigue. Bones, muscles and all body tissue and fluids require water for efficient function. Fat, on the other hand just doesn’t mix with water inside or outside the body. This explains why people who have high body fat percentages or obese, are frequently dehydrated and will not re-hydrate easily even if consuming the recommended amount of fluids. Our bodies are always adjusting to maintain homeostasis and stability. For us to be well, we must tune in to our innate warning system. Listen for alerts, distinguish and act upon the real threats to our existence, which ultimately boil down to water, food and shelter! Now, where did that horse go, we’ve got some talking to do!

FODDER SUBSIDY SCHEME By this stage, everyone should be aware of the Fodder Subsidy Scheme, whereby DAFM will provide a grant/ subsidy of €100 per hectare of hay, haylage or silage cut. To be eligible for FSS, you must:

• Have submitted a 2022 BPS application online at agfood.ie on or before 15th May 2022. Late BPS applications will be accepted for the purpose of this scheme up to and including 08th July 2022.

• Apply for FSS online at agfood.ie on or before the 2nd of August 2022.

• Confirm and agree to cut and conserve silage and or hay by 05th September 2022.

• Applicants must declare the total number of hectares of grassland they intend to cut for hay and/or silage in 2022.

• Only grassland parcels will be eligible. Tillage land is not eligible to receive support under this scheme.

• At least 5% of participants will be selected for inspection with a further 3% subject to administrative checks.

• You must agree to comply with the terms & conditions of the Fodder Support Scheme.

All Farmers are advised to apply, but only if you actually make any of the above. And they are also advised to NOT make silage if they don’t need it, as this is only a subsidy, and will not cover more than 20 – 25% of costs incurred.

Penalties will be imposed on non-factual applications, of three times the level of payment. Anyone interested in applying should contact their advisor immediately, as many of same will be away towards the end of the month. The closing date is 2nd August 2022.

FARMERS ADVISED TO PROTECT STOCK

DURING HOT WEATHER: When we talk about stock, we should also consider pets. Cats or dogs, or other types of family pets may not be as valuable, (or maybe more so) but we must remember that they can be as much family as longdistance relatives in New France or The Colonies. Farmers and everyone are advised to take steps to protect their livestock and other animals during the hot weather. The mini-heatwave may be gone for the moment, but it can easily come back, and hopefully will. While the recent good weather is welcomed by everyone, we must remember that high temperatures can cause significant stress for livestock. It is important that farmers consider the extra steps needed to take care of their animals in these circumstances, making them comfortable and avoiding serious health and welfare problems arising due to the heat.

Key points to reduce the impact of high temperatures on animals include;

• Ensure plentiful supply of drinking water.

• The number of watering points and water flow may need to be increased in hot weather as demand increases.

• Drinking points should checked be more

often during hot weather to ensure they are working and that the pressure is adequate.

• Stock should be monitored for signs of problems with water supply such as queuing or crowding at water points.

• Ensure access to suitable shade or shelter

• Vulnerable animals such as very young, old, or sick animals may need to be moved to a location with additional shade or shelter where they can be monitored more closely.

• Holding areas for livestock should also have shaded areas available where possible and holding times minimised.

• Outdoor poultry should have access to shade.

• Outdoor pigs require access to a wallow to cool down especially if the temperature is above 25° C as they are particularly vulnerable to heat stress.

• Minimise handling and transport

• Movement or handling of cattle during hot weather can increase their body temperature by 0.5 to 3.5° C, causing heat stress.

• Minimise handling in hot weather- if necessary, ensure it is done as early or late in the day as possible to coincide with cooler temperatures.

• Avoid transporting animals in hot weather where possible.

• If transport is necessary, plan to minimise journey length, transport during cooler hours and reduce the stocking density to allow for more airflow inside the vehicle.

Livestock should always be checked more frequently in hot weather. Animals at a higher risk of heat stress include young, dark-coloured or pregnant animals, animals recovering from illness, pigs and high-producing dairy cows.

Signs of heat stress include faster breathing or panting; loss of appetite; increased water intake; drooling; listlessness or lethargy; and in severe cases, animals may become unconscious.

Regarding “Man’s Best Friend”, dogs are wonderful pets, companions and are important part of the family for many people in Ireland. There are a number of simple steps that will ensure their future health, such as:

• Never leave your dog unattended in a car, even if the car is parked in the shade or with windows open. The temperature inside the car may rise rapidly, causing heat stroke which can be fatal.

• Make sure your dog has a shaded area available to shelter from direct sunlight.

• Dogs should always have access to plenty of fresh water both inside and outdoors; this is especially important during hot weather.

• It is preferable to exercise dogs in the morning or evening, when the temperatures are cooler than in the middle of the day. On longer walks, bring water for your dog to drink (collapsible bowls can be useful).

• Surfaces that heat up in the sun, such as tarmac, pavements and sand, may be painful for your dog’s paws. If the surface is too hot for you to touch, walk your dog on grass or in shaded areas instead.

• Regular grooming/clipping of dogs, particularly those with long or thick hair, helps dogs regulate their body temperature during hot weather.

• As dogs can get sunburn, especially dogs with thin coats and/or white hair, limit their exposure to direct sunlight and apply sunscreen to their ear tips and bridge of their nose if necessary. Check with your vet, who can advise on suitable sunscreen for dogs.

• Be aware of the signs of heat stroke. If dogs become too hot, this may lead to heat stroke, a serious condition which can be fatal. Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, confusion, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or seizures. If you suspect your dog has heat exhaustion or heat stroke, please seek immediate veterinary attention and try to cool the dog down by moving to a cooler location, preferably indoors, wetting their body, ears and paws with cool (not very cold) water and offering small volumes of cool or lukewarm (not cold) water to drink.

MANY QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED ABOUT

ACRES: The simple question is are there to be any worthwhile benefits to commercial farmers, from the new proposed agri-environmental scheme ACRES?

Despite the DAFM claims that the scheme will deliver €7,300 to many farmers, it is hard to see how any will receive even the €4,000 that many achieved under GLAS and even AEOS. Taking inflation into account, this is a poor relative of REPS, and much more complicated that any previous scheme. At a recent advisor training event, DAFM stressed the penalties to be imposed, but have yet to issue a scheme document of Terms and Conditions, so advisors cannot do their job and advise farmers as to the best options. As a result, if you asked an advisor today, how much you would earn from the ACRES Scheme, he would have to shrug his shoulders and say, “come back to me in September” or whenever the essential details are released.

Also, DAFM admitted that this scheme is much more complicated than it’s predecessors, maybe involving four-times more work that the earlier incantations. However, the time allocation to complete these allocations remains the same at Six Weeks. This can only mean that the time limitation is a cynical attempt to reduce the numbers applying for and gaining entry to the scheme.

Under the general approach, farmers can receive a payment ranging from €250-400/ha for low input grassland, up to a maximum of 10ha, as well as a payment of €200/ha on extensively grazed pasture. But to achieve these payments, their land needs to be scored by their advisor, making him “Poacher-turned-Gamekeeper”.

And, a farmer will have to allocate up to 20 Ha (50ac) to farming in a very extensive manner. As many farmers will not be able to allocate 50ac to this purpose, many will achieve closer to €3,000.

Many are asking questions about this scheme, and all that can be said is that it appears like something designed by a scared committee in Soviet Russia, of scientists and administrators in fear of ending up in a Gulag in Siberia, in the 1970’s

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

• Before you go check, where possible, if access is allowed and your activity is permitted in the area you wish to visit.

• Respect any signs, regulations, policies and special concerns for the area that you wish to visit. Permits may sometimes be needed for activities on public lands.

• Where possible travel by public transport or share cars; consider the availability of parking.

• Ensure you have the skills and equipment needed for your activity and to cope with emergencies that could arise.

• Check the weather forecast and always be prepared for changing weather conditions.

• For environmental and safety reasons, and to minimise your impact on other users, keep group numbers small; split larger parties into smaller groups.

2. Be Considerate of Others

• Respect the people who live and work in the countryside.

• Park appropriately - avoid blocking gateways, forest entrances or narrow roads. Remember that farm machinery, local residents and the emergency services may need access at all times.

• Take care not to damage property, especially walls, fences and crops.

• Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.

• Let nature's sounds prevail. Keep noise to a minimum.

3. Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife

• Dogs should be kept under close control and should only be brought onto hills or farmland ONLY with the landowner's permission. Some public areas stipulate that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, please adhere to local guidelines.

• Observe wild animals and birds from a distance. Avoid disturbing them, particularly at sensitive times: mating, nesting and raising young (mostly between spring and early summer).

• Keep wildlife wild, don't feed wild animals or birds - our foods damage their health and leave them vulnerable to predators.

• Farm animals are not pets; remain at a safe distance.

4. Dispose of Waste Properly

• "If You Bring It In, Take It Out" - take home all litter and leftover food (including tea bags, fruit peels and other biodegradable foods).

• To dispose of solid human waste, dig a hole 15-20cms deep and at least 30m from water, campsites and tracks. Cover and disguise the hole when finished.

• Bring home toilet paper and hygiene products.

• Wash yourself or your dishes 30m away from streams or lakes and if necessary, use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Bring home any solids and scatter strained dishwater.

Coumeenole South

Mary Kevane lived in Coumeenole South and she was aged 90. She was recorded as the head of the household and her profession was ‘Nurse’. Her son John, 60, a farmer, and his wife Bridget, 56, had seven children. All the household spoke Irish and four of them did not speak English. It seems that people had no option but to complete the census forms in English.

Lougher

Margaret Barry who lived in Lougher was also a nurse and aged 90. But was she? The census form was completed by using pen and ink. It appears that her age might have been 70 and changed to 90 or vice versa. Her son Maurice, a farmer, was aged 34 which means that if his mother was 90 he was born when she was in her mid-fifties.

Leamirlea (Kilmalkeader)

Julia Slattery was the oldest member of a ten-person household in Leamirlea. She was aged 90 and a widow. Except for the three youngest, all spoke Irish and English.

Ballyganeen

John Begley, a farmer in Ballyganeen, was aged 90 and the head of the household. His son Michael, 34, was a ‘Fisherman’. There were eleven people in the house and all spoke Irish and English except for John’s wife Bridget, 72, who didn’t speak English.

Ballynahow

John Moriarty, a single man, lived in Ballynahow and was aged 90 in 1901. There were six people living in the house and all stated ‘Cannot Read’ on the census form. All spoke Irish only and with the census form being in English only it’s no surprise they recorded ‘Cannot Read’ – should that have been ‘Cannot Read English’.

Lack

Michael Fitzgerald lived in Lack and he was 90 years of age. He, his wife Jane, 85, and their widower son Michael, 48, spoke Irish and English. The remaining seven occupants spoke English only.

Charles Mason also lived in Lack and recorded his occupation as ‘Labourer’ at the age of 90. His wife Catherine, 50, gave her occupation as ‘Spinster’. This is interesting because she was married and couldn’t be a spinster in the accepted meaning of the word at that time. So she must have been using the original meaning of spinster which was ‘Wool spinner’. Both spoke Irish and English.

Maumagarrane

Hanorah Kavanagh, a single woman aged 90 lived in Maumagarrane with her brother John, 87, also single and both spoke Irish only.

Ballintlea, (Ventry)

Michael Lynch, a widower living in Ballintlea, was also 90 years of age. His occupation was recorded as ‘Retired farmer’ and he spoke Irish only. The other seven occupants of the house were Russells.

Ballybeg

Mary Moran, a widow aged 90 lived in Ballybeg, Ventry, with her widowed daughter Margaret Hannifin, 45, whose occupation was ‘Farmer’. Mary spoke Irish only and the other four occupants were bi-lingual.

Camp

Mary Connor lived in Camp and her entry in the printed census form is a perfect example of transcription error. In the hand-written form her age is given as ‘90’. In the transcribed version her age is given as ‘20’ and she is described as the ‘Mother of the head of the family’ who was her son Patrick …. aged 60. Mary spoke Irish only. Whoever recorded the transcription must have been suffering from census fatigue.

Ballintaggart (Ballinvoher)

Julia Rourke lived in a house in Ballintaggart and was aged 90. She was unmarried and spoke Irish and English. In the next issue we’ll move up the scale from 90 to 100 and beyond which will include one person who was alive during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

What's Happening in The Hub?

Bernard comes from Gráig near Ballyferriter where he’s still involved in farming and tourism. He has a busy and varied set of tasks on his todo list in this new role. For example: compiling reports on how our projects are delivering against targets, showing our clients who are hiring meeting rooms or desks how the facilities work and setting up meetings with our external partners.

He says: “I’m getting to work on these great projects that Dingle Hub is involved in. I’m especially excited about the Energy and Agriculture projects - they really are cutting edge!”

The Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities is the latest politician to come to Dingle! It follows Eamon Ryan’s visit here at the end of June to see some of our projects in the field. Joe O'Brien TD had a much shorter visit than his party leader but spent his time here In Dingle Hub, learning about the variety of projects we are involved in.

He heard how we have expanded from our original purpose of providing office and desk facilities for remote workers to much more; with our mission now being to build a creative, liveable, sustainable low carbon community and generate well-paid, year-round incomes on Dingle Peninsula. This is an innovative model of rural development not being done in many other places. What we have developed here with our partners could be mirrored in hundreds of rural areas with their hubs expanding from office space provision to also taking on sustainability and climate change projects like we have.

We have a new team member to introduce! Bernard O’Sullivan is the new Office and Projects Administrator with Dingle Hub. As well as a degree in Business and Marketing he has loads of real-world experience across agriculture, tourism, the stationery business, marketing and customer relations. All great experience to bring to the projects we run in Dingle Hub! His most recent job was with Amazon (working remotely) and it’s great that we are able to give another local person employment.

We also spent time talking to Minister O’Brien about the next steps for our sustainable mobility (transport) projects, such as a Community Car, for people who only need occasional access to one. Looking forward to hearing how his Department of Rural and Community Development can help out with this and similar initiatives.

Journaling Farmers

In another example of the kind of synergies that happen at Dingle Hub, our client DGE (Dingle Global Education, who hire space from us) arranged for their current group of American students to learn about what we are doing for the future of Corca Dhuibhne.

This group attend University of California, Santa Cruz where they are taking an Academic Writing course with lecturer Professor Steve Coulter. While spending a month in the Dingle area they are focusing on travel writing. DGE has arranged a suite of experiences for the group, across three areas: digging into the past, experiencing the

The group and their lecturer were given an overview of how Dingle Hub is helping the area now between our project work and the facilities we provide that allow people to easily work from this remote peninsula. Our Energy and Agricultural Liaison Officer Dinny Galvin had the students in the palm of his hand, describing how the projects running now and the ones we aspire to kickstart (e.g. Anaerobic Digestor) will help protect the future for people living on our peninsula.

As a farmer himself, Dinny spoke about the future of farming here and how landowners want to be part of the solution in reducing emissions and having other positive impacts on the environment. The group was very taken with Dinny, as was he with them! It’s not the first time we’ve helped DGE like this and we are always ready to help Clients where we can. We hope we get to find out how they journaled their experiences in Dingle Hub.

Dingle voices at the Energy & Farm Business Show

There was a fantastic buzz at one of the most important energy events in this year’s calendar and it was great to be part of it! Earlier this week Deirdre de Bhailís and Dinny Galvin from Dingle Hub travelled to Tipperary for the Energy and Farm Business Show being held in Gurteen Agricultural College near Roscrea. The organisers had Deirdre chair a session about developing a community electricity project. We spoke about what had worked well in setting up the West Kerry Dairy Farmers Sustainable Energy Community and listened to other groups who have taken different approaches. We also saw the latest in technology e.g. tractors that can be run on methane gas instead of diesel.

WELCOME. A hearty Céad Míle Fáilte to all the visitors who have come to the Dingle Peninsula on holidays be they for short or longer stays or for business or other purposes. We hope you all enjoy your stay among us and get time to visit and experience some of the wide variety of interesting attractions and facilities which are dotted right around the Peninsula. We also very much appreciate your contribution to the economy here in West Kerry and that you speak positively about the area to your associates afterwards. Míle Buíochas.

EVENTS. Well done to all associated with the West Kerry Agricultural Show which was a huge success last weekend based mainly in the Mart Facilities and surrounding fields. All the various attractions had large entries, many from outside the area, which in turn led to a great atmosphere in the grounds throughout the day. The CBS Boys Band marched from the Pier to entertain the attendance as did world champion dancer David Geaney. Minister For Education Norma Foley T.D. performed the official opening which was also attended by many local politicians and loyal show followers.

DINGLE RACES are now officially on the events calendar starting with an evening meeting on Friday August 5th and afternoon meetings on the 6th and 7th. Thankfully the insurance industry eventually agreed to grant adequate cover for such events on which so many depend for a living as well as for the interest in the sport.

Many other local festivals and attractions are planned over the next few months throughout the Peninsula with further details elsewhere in this edition.. So no excuses just get out there and support as well as enjoy the summer programme which is every bit as much for locals as well as our visitors.

TIDY TOWNS. I hope that by now most of our readers will have noticed

the beautiful display of Wildflowers on the Conor Pass Road and the approach roads to Inch Beach. These were the initiative of Kerry County Council Management and staff and planted on the completion of major road works at both locations earlier this year. Great to see the local authority taking this initiative as Tidy Towns Judges are very much focused on Biodiversity over the past while. Hope you have also spotted our new wildflower beds on Mail Road and Spa Road areas.

PEIL. Good Luck to the Kerry Senior Men's Team and Management in the All Ireland Final against Galway on this Sunday. Also Best Wishes to the Kerry Ladies Senior Team and Management in their All Ireland Final versus Meath a week later. West Kerry is well represented in both camps and will be well supported judging by the local demand for match tickets. Time to get out the buntings and flags to show your support and get that special All Ireland atmosphere reignited again.

A reminder not to forget to purchase your ticket for the Home In Dingle Draw which takes place in a few weeks time.!!!.

EXHIBITION. The public have until August 3rd to visit the wonderful exhibition of Photographs taken by German photographer Martin Rosswog of happenings and events in Dingle over the period between the 1970s and 1990s. The Exhibition is based in An Diseart in Green Street and is open from Monday to Saturday 11a.m. to 1p.m. and 2p.m. to 4p.m.daily. Well worth a visit and a great reminder of how the area has changes in that short timespan.

Fruit ripening and fields of grain turning gold can mean only one thing- Féile Lughnasadh is almost upon us! The free, family-friendly, four-day festival in Milltown will begin on July 28th, bringing a spectacular line up to the stage, including Sharon Shannon, Jiggy, Kerry trad sensations The Rising and much more. The festival marks Lughnasadh, the ancient Celtic celebration of the beginning of the harvest and the god Lugh, provider and protector. This festival will bring the local community and the county together to celebrate our music and culture over the four days. Lugh will be honoured at the opening parade, where local kids will be in costume as the Celtic god Lugh and the goddess, Tailtiu, both providers of good harvests. And it won’t be just the concerts as there will be street entertainment, kids’ events, open music sessions in local bars as well as the festival club in the Community Hall and the outdoor céili on Sunday afternoon. Organizer Owen O’Shea says this could be Milltown’s best festival ever. “We’ve brought the best in trad to the streets of Milltown over the years and this year’s line-up is up there with the best of them”. Vincent Prendergast said, “this is a festival not to be missed. It’s for all the family, the performers are the best in the business and it’s totally free.” Louise O'Shea added, "there's something for everyone, with the parade, the food and crafts fair on the Sunday, the street entertainment competition, the music sessions and céili, there's just so much happening and it's all free and openair."

MINORS: Central Region Division 2 Final: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 5-12, An Ghaeltacht 3-15

A win in Tralee and another county title for the GGC minors. An epic encounter at the John Mitchels GAA complex last Friday evening ended with a three-point win for GGC.

Following their county league title win back in April they added the Central Region crown after an excellent encounter against An Ghaeltacht. The win was secured thanks to a stunning second half display when they scored 3-8. Well done to the team and their trainers Patie Casey, Paudie McCarthy, Brendan O’Sullivan, and Stephen Casey.

An Ghaeltacht had the better of the first half and led by two at the break, 1-9 to 2-4, but the GGC lads soon struck for their third goal to lead by 3-5 to 1-10 early in the second half.

With ten minutes left, however, it was all square (3-10 to 2-13) as these two evenly matched sides continued to serve up a cracker.

GGC claimed the title by hitting 2-2 in the last ten minutes. Well done lads. Captain Fionn O’Sullivan accepted the Division 2 shield on behalf of the GGC team after this fine win.

UNDER-9s: The Cromane under-9s played their fifth series of games for the year last Sunday against Knocknagoshel in Cromane. Once again, it was great to see so many togged out in the Cromane colours. Many thanks to their coaches Martin Sweeney, Matt Colborne, Brian Hurley, and John Caplis.

UNDER-7s: The Cromane under-7s played Laune Rangers last Sunday in Killorglin. This was their fourth series of games for the year. It was great to see so many young players togged out in their Cromane gear. Some lovely skills were on display which is a testament to their coaches. Well done all.

IMPORTANT - UNDERAGE TRAINING: Please note that we have a new starting time of 10.30am for our underage training on Sundays. This was decided after a survey of parents and coaches involved. Let's see how the new time goes over the next few training sessions. The most important thing being that the children still come in their droves and enjoy the mornings with their coaches and friends.

DEATH: Sincere Sympathy to the family and friends of Helen Clarke (Nee Teahan), Glosha. Sadly missed by her loving daughter Susan, sons Paul & Barry, sister Mai, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours & many friends.

Helen returned to Glosha with her husband William many years ago to retire. She was an active member of the Active Retirement Group and had an open door to all friends and neighbours. Her funeral Mass took place at the Star of the Sea Church, Cromane followed by Interment alongside her husband William in Ardmoneil Cemetary, Killorglin. May she rest in peace.

4 tsp. harissa paste

½ tsp. cumin

1 lemon, zested and juiced bunch of mint

250g couscous 500ml vegetable stock

Method

Ingredients

150ml natural yogurt

½ cucumber, seeds removed and finely diced

8 lamb chops (2 per person) rapeseed oil salt and pepper

Mix the harissa, cumin and lemon juice in a bowl, add the lamb chops, mix this well, season with salt and pepper. Leave this aside while you prepare the couscous.

For the couscous, keep half of the mint leaves on the stalk, and chop the rest of the leaves finely. Put the mint on the stalk in a small pot add the stock and lemon zest, bring this to the boil.

Put the couscous in a bowl and add the raisins, pour the stock over the couscous, cover the bowl with cling film and leave for about 15-20 minutes. At this stage remove the cling film, remove the sprig of mint, add the freshly chopped mint and lemon juice, stir this in gently with a fork. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Keep this warm while cooking the lamb.

For the yogurt. Mix the cucumber with the yogurt, season with salt and pepper.

Heat a pan over medium to high heat. Once hot add a little oil, then the lamb. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side. Allow them to rest for another 5 minutes.

Put some of the couscous in the centre of the plate and place some pork chops on top. Spoon a little of the yogurt over the top of the lamb.

Whist is back from Thursday 21st July and for every Thursday after that...at the West end Hall from 8pm.

Weekly evening Tidy Towns work Tuesdays at 7 pm to 8:15 pm to weed, cut hedges, repair and generally improve our village. All are welcome. Meeting at the playground. Please bring your own equipment: gloves, secateurs, brushes, brush pans, buckets, shovels, trowels, safety vests, etc. Rubbish bags will be supplied. If you don't have equipment please let us know and we will ask some of our regular volunteers if they can bring spares. We will have some extra safety vests and gloves but these are in short supply. For now we will go out every Tuesday evening, and Thursday evenings where applicable. Please watch notifications on our Facebook page or contact the office for more information.

Discontinued Recycling Service

Unfortunately during renovations, we have to discontinue recycling service. We are looking at an alternative site. The services are provided at both Dillons and Higgins in Tralee. We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have it rectified when the Clubrooms are finished.

The office is open. As with any other businesses in the village, please wear a mask and use the hand sanitiser provided when you enter. The Clubrooms are still not in use but the West End hall is. If you need to use a hall for anything please call us at the office to book the West End hall when available. All of our regular renters are now using the West End hall until further notice, so time slots will be limited.

St. Mary’s Camp: There is no longer a Sunday Mass at 12 noon. – Mass is a Vigil Mass on every second Saturday @ 6.15pm. (it alternates with St. Brendan’s Cloghane). Please check the weekly parish newsletters to know exact dates for these Masses.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynam ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

MISS KERRY Congratulations to Kasey McCormack newly crowned Miss Kerry who will represent Kerry in the Miss Ireland Contest to be held in Castlebar on 20th August. Well done Kasey, this is indeed a great achievment, finalists go through a challenging competition process testing their skills in debating, public speaking, sports, modeling, social media, while all finalists will be tasked with raising funds for their chosen charities, Kasey's charity is Bodywhys, the Irish eating Disorder Association who offer confidential support and information.

Kasey has great Camp connections, she is the daughter of Gail McCormack, Glendine, Grandparents Peggy and Brendan and a large extended family, all very proud of her achievements. All of us in Camp wish her all the best in the final and in all her future endeavours.

OBITUARY John Neil Steuart McAloon, Deelis, Camp, Tralee, Co. Kerry and formerly of Glasgow, died peacefully at his residence on 2nd July 2022. John lived amongst us for over 25 years first arriving to Killelton where he resided with his late wife Maggie before he settled in Deelis.

A great neighbour, John made many friends in Camp and he loved to socialise on a Saturday night in Ashes pub chatting to the locals and never missed Sunday Mass in Camp, another enjoyable meeting place for John.

John became a Catholic 25 years ago and he embraced his faith with great fervour to the end of his days.

Predeceased by his wife Maggie (O'Brien). Dearly loved and sadly missed by his loving family, his daughter Susan and his son Hugh, his son-inlaw William and his daughter-in-law Allison, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

John was laid to rest in Camp Cemetary alongside his late wife Maggie following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Michael Moynihan on Thursday last.Sympathy is extended to all. Rest In Peace.

Deepest sympathy to Norah Crean, Knockgloss beg and all the Crean and Tobin families on the unexpected death of her brother Joe Tobin (Lismore County Waterford and formerly of Janeville) on July 2nd (Retired Postman).

Joe was a keen sportsman actively involved in Management and Training in GAA and Soccer in

his own County Waterford all of his life.

He was a great supporter of Kerry football too and followed his nephews, the Crean brothers Knockglossbeg with great pride and the Annascaul Club.

Joe was pre-deceased by his brothers Jimmy, Walter, Michael (Bonso) and Thomas.

Sadly missed by his daughters Ciara and Gemma, sons Jason and Craig and their mother Jo Jo, his brothers Billy, Patrick, Kevin, Maurice and Noel (Gal), sisters Jenny Allen, Nora Crean, Kitty Farrell, Sarah McGrath and Mary Tobin, his partner Sheila, grandchildren Tadhg, Meadhbh and Ruaidhrí, son-in-law Trevor, father-in-law John, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends. Rest In Peace.

ANNASCAUL LADIES FOOTBALL Lgfa U-12 Division 3 Final: Annascaul 5-9 Knocknagoshel/ Brosna 3-8

These two teams met for the second time in a short period of weeks and once again served up a cracker under the watchful eye of excellent Ref Sharon Roche.

Knock/Brosna stormed out of the traps and raced into a 3 point lead before Niamh released Saoirse to crack home a great goal to settle us.

Knock/Brosna responded as all good teams do with two goals and we faced an uphill battle down 6points after ten mins of play. From here though, the young Annascaul girls settled, particularly our backs Caoimhe, Jenna, Annie and Aoife as they began getting to grips with the opposition nifty forwards.

Niamh cut through for a point and her co captain Saoirse did likewise. Aoibhinn was tormenting K/B with her pace, fed Saoirse who hit a bullet off the crossbar and Lily was quickest to side step cleverly and blast to the net.

Momentum was now with the Western girls and Niamh intercepted before setting Aoibhinn off up the wing, who dinked the ball into Lily and a quick hand pass saw Lia score a fantastic team goal. K/B responded with 3 good points.

An excellent kick out by Orla saw the ball worked upto Tara who did the hard yards before slipping it to the tenacious Katie who fed Lia for the last point before the short whistle.

The second half saw both teams show fantastic skill levels and gutsy determination to gain the upper hand.

Aoibhinn's speed won her a free for Saoirse to convert and Saoirse followed up with a long range point. K/B scored 2 points to stay in touch before the talented Saoirse weaved her way through for our fourth goal to give us some breathing space as Lia, Caoimhe and Orla all raised their games.

K/B then threw the kitchen sink at the Annascaul girls. Twice Niamh drove out from her own goal line, our brave young keeper Muireann C was alert to make a great save before Orla bravely batted away a bullet from K/B.

Caoimhe, Jenna, Aoife and Annie doggedly defended and closed up shop as Tara ran her self ragged in trying to relieve the pressure.

Fresh legs saw Holly force a great save from K/B's keeper at the expense of a point before Saoirse, playing a Captain's part blasting 1-1 to ease the stress levels of the huge Annascaul supporters.

But still K/B refused to give up and worked a well taken goal which meant a nerve wracking final few minutes. Youngsters Èabha and Aislinn stepped up the plate and Aislinn calmly set up Lily to score our final point to the sound of the much needed full time whistle.

This result wouldn't have been achieved without our panel of girls such as Amy, Maria, Roisin, Jane, Sadbh and Muireann Meighan who all played starring roles in getting across the line in previous Div 3 county league encounters.

Thanks to co captains Saoirse and Niamh who accepted the plaque from the Kerry Lgfa official afterwards on behalf of their hugely proud teammates. This group of girls are a joy to train and are a great credit to their parents.

In July 2010, Wikileaks published Cablegate, one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military, including evidence for war crimes and torture. In the aftermath Julian Assange, the founder and spokesman of Wikileaks, found himself at the centre of a media storm, accused of hacking and later sexual assault. He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face the accusations of assault and then sent to US. In 2019, Assange was handed over to the British police and, on the same day, the U.S. demanded his extradition. They threatened him with up to 175 years in prison for alleged espionage and computer fraud. At this point, Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, started his investigation into how the US and UK governments were working together to ensure a conviction. His findings are explosive, revealing that Assange has faced grave and systematic due process violations, judicial bias, collusion and manipulated evidence. He has been the victim of constant surveillance, defamation and threats. Melzer also gathered together consolidated medical evidence that proves that Assange has suffered prolonged psychological torture. Melzer’s compelling investigation puts the UK state into the dock, showing how, through secrecy, impunity and, crucially, public indifference, unchecked power reveals a deeply undemocratic system.
