An evening with the Dingle New-Music Choir and Orchestra Gábor Péli To raise awareness of mental health In aid of Cuan Counselling Service and local adult support groups Venue: An Díseart, Fresco room 24th October, 6.30 PM

focused breathing improves muscle control. It also improves posture. The released endorphin is a natural painkiller and by producing it during practice alleviates pain. The educational benefits: Learning music at a young age will help to relate to other subjects in your timetable. Learning music and reading music in Youth choirs and Youth orchestras provides you with a different way of thinking, it opens up the mind. Learning about written music teaches you a unique way of thinking that can’t be accessed from learning other subjects. People who learn music at a young age often do very well in Maths. Also music is a language and art music often uses poetry or other forms of texts that would easily stand out as readings without singing and it helps to focus and relate to ones studies in literature. (Think of a libretto from Wagner’s operas.)

Therefore, I invite you to come along to an open rehearsal where you will find out what happens in a choral and orchestral practice and where you can see how we work. What will I gain by coming along?

During singing and indeed playing in an orchestra our body releases hormones such as endorphin and oxytocin. Endorphin is associated with feelings of pleasure while oxytocin helps reduce levels of anxiety and stress. Singing and playing also helps your mind to shift from negative thoughts to positive thoughts as it requires a relatively high level of concentration. In this state of concentration our mind will not have time to dwell on everyday worries. This doesn’t always apply to other activities that require less focused attention and activities that are more automatic. Community and creativity: Being part of a music group can give you a sense of togetherness. In art music, learning different lines of harmony and learning different sections of orchestral music and being put together at the end of the rehearsal can give you a unique sense of achievement. Each individual contributes with their own line to the overall sound, which being in harmony is something we look forward to every week. This feeling makes us look forward to seeing our group every week, on regular a basis, bringing a regular positive experience to our life. Learning new and maybe challenging songs and certain lines can put us out of our comfort zone and mastering these lines in a practice can give us a great sense of achievement. Music making is a very ancient activity and has brought societies together for thousands of years. Being part of a choir or orchestra and learning together, especially learning in a group is highly motivational. Self-esteem: Playing music and singing in a choir (just as much as being part of a sports team) at a concert can help with your self-confidence and standing in front of a crowd performing can help us with everyday tasks that may involve interacting with people. The physical effects: Some studies have shown that choral singing and orchestral playing exercises the brain in a way that no other fields of science or sport may do. It improves breathing techniques and

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 18th October the feature at the Dingle Film Club will be the hugely entertaining drama “ Captain Fantastic”. Starring Viggo Mortensen, the film is set in the Pacific Northwest of America where a father who is devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent upon reintegration to society. Beautifully filmed and backed with a sumptous soundtrack, Captain Fantastic is one of the most original and charming films of the year. The following week on Tuesday 25th October the feature will be the Irish film “A Date For Mad Mary”. The film tells the story of ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle who returns to Drogheda after a short spell in prison - for something she’d rather forget. Back home, everything and everyone has changed. Her best friend, Charlene, is about to get married and Mary is to be her maid of honour. When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus one’ on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong. ‘A date for Mad Mary’ is a tough and tender story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days.

Large Pork Loin Chop with Sauté Potatoes and Persillade Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is really what good home cooking is all about, find good ingredients, cook them really simply and produce something tasty and fit for any table. To get the most out of this dish find some really good pork (you will have to pay a little more for it but it will be worth it) and get your butcher to cut a large thick chops from the loin. A simple seasoning mix of parsley, diced shallot and garlic, which is otherwise known as persillade in French cookery, will marry all of the dish so well together.

Heat a large frying pan to medium heat, add the butter and wait until it foams, but don’t let it burn. Add the chops and cook for about 6 minutes on each side. Transfer them to a warm tray to rest for about 4 minutes. Add about 80ml of cold water to the pan where the chops were cooking, this will start to form a sauce. Using a wooden spoon stir this around gathering all of the sauce form the pan. Continue to heat for a minute or so until the liquid reduces in volume to a rich sauce. To serve Put some of the sauté potatoes with persillade in the centre of a plate, put the chop on top then pour the juices from the pan over the chops and place the sage leaves on top of the pork. Serve the remaining sautéed potatoes on the side. Enjoy!!!

tres Marine Taxation:- Introduction of a fishers’ tax credit of €1,270.

Louis Murchan

BUDGET 2017 Ministers Noonan and O’Donoghue announced a budget that for the first time in many years that did not receive the ire of the opposition, or from the significant and reasonable opposition, in any event. This was because, for the first time in many decades, possible since the foundation of the State, there was consensus and consultation across the floor of the Dail, on what needed to be done. This was not a case of the “the tail wagging the dog” as no one got all that they wanted, but the government had to and did listed to the significant opposition, and didn’t ignore the needs of FF or Labour constituents, around the country. And for that alone, the two ministers involved should be commended. Budgets are not exciting, sexy or easy to follow, but this is an attempt to make sense of it for you. HERE IS BUDGET 2017, IN SIMPLE TERMS: €150 Million Low Interest Agri Cash Flow Support Loan Announced €601 Million Spend on RDP – Re-Opening Glas & BDGP New €25 Million Sheep Welfare Scheme & €25 Million Knowledge Transfer Scheme Agri-Taxation : Income Averaging Measure Confirmed Increased Investment In Seafood Development & Fishermen’s Tax Credit Low Cost Finance: A €150 million agri cash flow support loan fund with an interest rate of 2.95% provides highly flexible low cost loans for Irish farmers Support inside the farm gate: Significant spending on farm gate schemes through the Rural Development programme will see €601 million go directly to farmers in 2017 including a new €25 million sheep welfare scheme, increased participation in GLAS, BDGP & TAMS on top of €1.2 billion through the Basic payment/greening measure. Changes to Farm Assist including more favourable eligibility criteria and a €5 weekly increase, 500 extra places on the Rural Social Scheme, and extended social insurance cover for the self-employed including optical and dental cover Tax Measures: Thirdly a dynamic set of tax measures including changes to the ‘income averaging system’, a €400 increase in the ‘Earned Income Tax Credit’ and further consideration of an income stabilisation measure completes the three pillar approach to strategically tackling income volatility In line with promises made and commitments given, the following have been guaranteed under Budget 2017 to the Farming Sector, including •

€601 million for the Rural Development Programme:

• €241.7 million for Agri-environmental schemes (Incl AEOS/ GLAS/ REPS Organics) •

€202 million for Areas of Natural Constraint

€52 million for the Beef Data and Genomics Programme

€50 million for Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Schemes

€25.6 million for Knowledge Transfer Programme

€25 million for the Animal Welfare Scheme for Sheep

€121.5 million for Fisheries, , fishery harbours and marine related NCSSBs – MI, BIM and SFPA - €43.6m of this is for the Seafood Development Programme €111.6 million for Forestry €31 million for Research & Training €85.5 million for Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health including €34 million for TB & Brucellosis eradication and €5.1 million for Animal Welfare €1.5 million towards the rural innovation fund to support Female Rural Entrepreneurs, social farming and agri-food tourism initiatives( CEDRA) €241.1 million for Non-Commercial State Sponsored Bodies under the Department’s aegis (Teagasc, Marine Institute, Bord Bia, B.I.M, SFPA) Other Measures Include: Fluctuating Income An adjustment to the farmers’ ‘Income Averaging’ system, allowing for an opt-out in an exceptional year. Further consideration by DAFM & DoF of an ‘Income Stabilisation’ measure, whereby some income can be deferred (or saved) in a period of high prices, to be drawn down in a period of lower prices. Support Measures For Smes The ‘Earned Income Tax Credit’ increased by €400 to €950. The changes to the USC will also apply. There are also increased PRSI benefits for the self-employed, including eligibility for the ‘Invalidity Pension’. Increase in the limit for designation as a microbrewery to 40,000 hectoli-

CHANGES TO THE FARM AND FISH ASSIST SCHEMES:- Changes to means testing for Farm Assist and Fish Assist will be of benefit to farmers and fishermen who qualify for these social protection payments. VAT:- The farmer’s flat-rate addition is being increased from 5.2% to 5.4% with effect from 1 January 2017. FURTHER SUPPORT MEASURES FOR SMES:- The ‘Earned Income Tax Credit’ increased by €400 to €950 . This credit was introduced last year to encourage entrepreneurs and support small business owners with a view to eventually increasing it to the level of the PAYE tax credit. The majority of farmers, foresters, fishermen and small food processors are self-employed and the changes made in this year’s Budget will continue to promote and support entrepreneurship in the farming and agri-food sectors. The changes to the USC will also apply. Increased PRSI benefits for the self-employed. There are also Increased PRSI benefits for the self-employed, including eligibility for the ‘Invalidity Pension’. Increase in the designation of micro-brewing to 40,000 hectolitres per annum. The number of production microbreweries has increased from 10 in 2013 to over 60 currently; the output of production microbreweries up 56% in 2015 figure; and, production microbreweries in Ireland currently employ some 500 people, accounting for an extra 187 direct jobs in the past year. The increase in the limit for the designation as a microbrewer to 40,000 hectolitres per annum will allow brewers to continue to plan for expansion. Putting that expansion on a sound long-term basis is important given the craft beer sector’s strong regional focus and potential to deliver jobs and exports. MARINE TAXATION:- Introduction of a fishers’ tax credit of €1,270. A fisher’s tax credit of €1,270, available to those actively working on seafishing as employees, owner-operators or in a share-fisher capacity, has been introduced. It is similar to the seafarers’ tax allowance available to other maritime sectors. It is designed to assist in attracting and retaining essential crew and delivers on the commitment to support jobs in rural communities. This measure supports Ireland’s seafood industry, which was worth €1billion in GDP in 2015 and follows on from the recommendation in the Marine Taxation Review. ENVIRONMENTAL AGRI-TAXATION MEASURES The extension of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) accelerated capital allowance scheme to non-incorporated businesses. Currently this scheme is available only to companies and the majority of farmers operate as sole traders. This will incentivise investment in energy efficient equipment by farmers and improving farmer participation in the scheme would strengthen Bord Bia’s marketing message of sustainable Irish agriculture production through its Origin Green Programme and its various Quality Assurance Schemes. Such a scheme would be of obvious benefit to other high-energy consuming sectors such as dairy, pig and poultry production. Renewal Of Cgt Restructuring Relief For A Further Three Years. A Capital Gains Tax Relief for farm restructuring was introduced in Budget 2013. It is a ‘rollover’ relief granted where a more efficient farm holding results from the sale and purchase of land, i.e. where the newer farm parcels end up closer to the farming hub. Farm fragmentation is a feature of Irish farms, which have an average of 3.8 separate parcels. Since the changes in the measure in Budget 2015, there is evidence of a significant increase in the take-up of this measure. The renewal of the measure is for a further three years. Changes To The Farm And Fish Assist Schemes Changes to means testing for Farm Assist and Fish Assist. This will be of benefit to farmers and fishermen who qualify for these social protection payments. The means test will revert to the position which applied prior to Budget 2012 whereby 70% of income will be assessed as means as distinct from 100%. VAT:- The farmer’s ‘flat-rate addition’ is being increased from 5.2% to 5.4% with effect from 1 January 2017. The flat-rate scheme compensates unregistered farmers for VAT incurred on their farming inputs, and is reviewed annually in accordance with the EU VAT Directive. FINALLY, BPS payments (70%) are due on 17th October next, so keep an eye out for them, and get ready for an influx of bills & invoices, if they haven’t already arrived.

Ted Talks: Joe O’Toole Ted Creedon This interview with Joe O’Toole was broadcast on Radio Kerry on November 5, 2003 as part of the series South by South West. The O’Toole Family and Growing up in Dingle I don’t think anybody can be born and reared in Dingle without having a little thrill every time you see the harbour’s mouth when you come around by Baile an tSagart after driving 200 miles from Dublin. Just looking from the lighthouse to Hussey’s Folly and across to the Tuirín Bán which is falling down each year, it’s one of those great scenes. For me it’s what constitutes Dingle, that harbour’s mouth. The O’Tooles were enticed from the west of Wicklow in 1325 with the promise of Omey Island and a bit of land surrounding it. They married in to one of the big local families and were happy there until the clan chief and the main people were hanged by one of the Binghams and all the lands were stripped from them. So, for about a hundred years after that they were wandering. They went from Omey to Inishturk and I was delighted to visit the school on the island some years back to find that of the 30-something pupils around 28 of them were O’Tooles! My great-great-great grandfather John O’Toole came ashore to a little island which is almost attached to Annaghvaan island in County Galway and he built a house there. The remains of it are right beside what is now the 6th tee of the golf course there. The first of my side of the family to come to Dingle was my father, Miko, who was a guard here. The two big organised events in Dingle when I was growing up were the races and the regatta. They were the two huge events of the year. Then the three biggest cultural events were the Wrens Day, then Bonfire Night and then the Blessing of the Boats. The regatta was a huge day but we were actually part of the Blessing of the Boats. All the fishermen’s families and all the townspeople would go down the pier and get on the boats. Then the boats would go in a line straight out from the pier out to the harbour’s mouth. Then, outside the harbour’s mouth the lead boat in those days was always the Elsie Mable and the Canon would be on that boat. Then all the boats would form a circle and in that circle the Canon would say the Rosary over the radio of the boat and all the other boats would answer back. It was a very moving moment - religion in action and it was real.

thinks about the simple things. If we’re to preserve the Irish Language we should make sure that Gaeltacht people can do everything through Irish. Rather than that all our policies in this country have been about trying to get a few people, outside of the Gaeltacht, speaking Irish rather than giving support to those people who use it on a day-to-day basis.

Joe O’Toole (centre) with Dr. Conor Brosnan of Dingle Historical Society and Bernard Mac Brádaigh of Dingle Library. Photo: Ted Creedon.

I think the Government were using the Gaeltachts almost like a zoo - they’re just out there and we can send people in to look at them. One of the things about the CBS secondary in Dingle is that it was a model of good integration between people from different places, whether you were from Lispole or the town or from the island or previously from the island. They got on very well. I must say it’s one of my better memories, the friends we made that time are still our friends. The first time I visited the Great Blasket was by naomhóg, it was a long time ago. I was just struck by the pure magical atmosphere of the island. There are islands in my blood. All the O’Tooles lived on islands and when I step on to an island, or when I step on to a boat I feel a change straight away. I remember speaking in the Seanad when the National Park for the island was being decided upon for the Blaskets and I referred to the ‘draioct na noileáin’ because it is really the magic of the island and it’s there. When Criomhthain said ‘The likes of us will never be again’ he was actually saying an awful lot more than he thought at the time. They were very unusual people.

There was a huge storm one time in Dingle and this state-of-the-art trawler had arrived in Dingle called the Ros Mór and it was almost untouchable by the weather. Jesus! This storm came and it was an unusual storm from the south-east. It came blowing straight in the harbour’s mouth and it lifted this huge new trawler off the pier end and landed it right on to the harbour wall, the quay wall where the car park is nowadays. Other boats were thrown back as far as Milltown Bridge the same day. It was amazing. My mother had a shop and all my uncles had businesses and I was kind of helping them out or whatever but in the evening time you’d go swimming at Slaudeen - between the tower and the lighthouse - and that’s where I learned to swim. A few of us were part of a swimming club then. Slaudeen was a magnet for the kids of the town. That was a men-only beach but I suppose when the hormones started rattling around the place, when we were thirteen or fourteen, we moved on past the lighthouse to Beenbawn and we could look across at the girls on the other side. We could meet them by accident in the water or whatever”. “The Government were using the Gaeltachts like a zoo.” A good share of the lads in the Monastery school were from the Great Blasket. Here were people who were, apparently, like the custodians of Gaelic culture and the Irish Language. They were lovely, dignified, decent people and I couldn’t speak highly enough of them and I just feel that they have never been treated properly. The more I think back on it the angrier I become at the way that they have been mistreated and misunderstood in a million different ways. The whole world thinks about things like Gaeltacht grants and all the rest of it but I just take a simple view of this. I’m more comfortable with Gaeltacht people than with any other group in Ireland, I have to say. I just find that I can relate so easily to Gaeltacht people. Nobody ever

It was a home game again, this time against Kilorglin B who had won their first match quite comprehensively. We were still missing Ronan O'Beaglaoi through injury so Robbie Sheehy stepped in again at centre back alongside Paddy Ryan. Elijah Greenan captained the team from the goalkeeper position and it was unfortunately a mix-up at the back that allowed Kilorglin to take the lead half-way through the first half. It was against the run of play, and possibly the first time Kilorglin were in the Rovers half but the team showed a lot of character to force their way back into the match. Alex Buchanan and Kieran Bambury were controlling the centre of midfield giving the opportunity for Ryan Scanlon Newsted and man of the match Oscar Donegan to cause a lot of problems to Kilorglin down their 16 West Kerry Live

left side And the pressure eventually paid off with two goals from last season's top scorer Cormac O'Cinnede before half-time. It was a good fight back and the lead at half-time was enough for the team to believe they could win the match. Killorglin came out in the second half with a new game plan of putting long balls over the top of our defence and it worked as they kept us pressed in our own half for much of the half. Also our midfield dropped off the pace a bit but Elijah was fantastic in goal and saved a few certain goals, and Robbie and Paddy were standing up to everything being thrown at them. We were also getting a lot of joy with the break away and it was from one of those that James Hoare scored with a chip over the keeper from a tight angle. But for the woodwork DBR would have scored a couple more. It is a characteristic of this U13 team that they have nearly half the team playing above their age group and putting in very good performances against bigger, stronger players. Players like James Hoare, Aaron Hughes and Danny Kavanagh all put in good performances again this week but it was a fighting performance from Oscar Donegan at left back, also giving us another option going forward that won him man of the match and even got him onto the Kerry team of the week: http:// www.kerryschoolboysgirlsleague.com/good-day-in-skechers-nationalcup-for-kerry-sides/ Thanks to all who supported the team on the day, and thanks to Maeve for the teas and half-time orange juice. Kilorglin were very complementary afterwards that they got tea before and after the game. And thanks to assistant coach Fred. Team: Elijah Greenan (c), Danny Kavangh, Oscar Donegan, Robbie Sheehy, Paddy Ryan, Ryan Scanlon Newsted, Kieran Bambury, Alex Buchanan, Cormac O'Cinnede, Fergal Smith, Aaron Hughes, James Hoare

D’fhógair an tAire Stáit do Ghnóthaí Gaeltachta, Seán Kyne T.D., go bhfuil sé ar intinn aige Daingean Uí Chúis, a ainmniú mar Bhaile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta ach plean teanga a bheith aontaithe agus curtha i bhfeidhm don bhaile. Dúirt an tAire Stáit: “Le foilsiú an fhógra seo, cuirfear tús leis leis an bpróiseas pleanála teanga mar a bhaineann sé le Daingean Uí Chúis. Fágann sé seo go mbeidh eagraíocht á roghnú ag Údarás na Gaeltachta go gairid chun plean teanga a ullmhú agus a fheidhmiú don bhaile. Os rud é gurb é seo an chéad bhaile a mbeidh ullmhú plean teanga ag tosú ann faoin bpróiseas pleanála teanga, is céim eile chun cinn é i gcur i bhfeidhm an phróisis”. Dúirt an tAire Stáit go bhfuil sé ag súil leis go mbeidh na páirtithe leasmhara ar fad atá in ann tionchar a imirt ar an scéal sásta chun páirt ghníomhach a imirt chun an Ghaeilge a threisiú tuilleadh i nDaingean Uí Chúis – rud a bheidh chun leasa na Gaeilge agus an bhaile araon.

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs

Deirdre Daly The respiratory system is divided into the upper and lower respiratory systems with the upper system comprising the nose, larynx and pharynx and the lower respiratory system comprising the trachea, bronchi and the lungs. There are a number of excellent herbs for this system, which can be anti-infective, soothing and expectorant and as winter closes in it is good to have a stock of these herbs on hand. Looking first at the upper respiratory system, the common cold, which most people can shake off without a visit to their local doctor or herbalist can nonetheless make you feel very miserable. It is good to pamper yourself with some herbal teas and soothing drinks to help relieve the symptoms and importantly to ensure the cold doesn’t develop into something nastier. Colds have a viral origin so antibiotics, which kill bacteria, are not helpful here. An excellent formula for the common cold is elderflower, peppermint and yarrow, which can be taken as soon as cold or flu symptoms threaten. Thyme and sage are also important herbs for this system as the volatile oils of these fragrant herbs are strongly antiseptic helping to clear infection, soothe sore throats and ease irritating coughs. Sage is a specific for laryngitis and can be used as a gargle by bringing two to three teaspoons of the herb to a boil with a pint of water letting it stand covered for 15 minutes then straining and gargling deeply with this moderately hot infusion several times a day. The volatile oils in sage make this herb a good remedy for inflamed mucous membranes, so tonsillitis, sinusitis and laryngitis taken as a tea or tincture can be helpful. Thyme is an excellent cough remedy due to its expectorant properties which help to soothe bronchial spasm causing the cough reflex and loosen mucous congestion in the system. Many respiratory illnesses are accompanied by a nasty cough and it is here the soothing expectorant herbs come into their own. Herbs such as thyme mentioned above and, coltsfoot, liquorice, and mallow all give relief soothing inflammation and relaxing bronchial spasms. Echinacea is one of the primary remedies for the respiratory system and can be effective against bacterial and viral infections. The herb can also be taken as an immune stimulant more generally. Steam inhalations using essential oils can have beneficial effects on the respiratory system and essential oils such as, thyme, tea tree, eucalyptus and rosemary to mention a few, can help clear congested nasal passages, and soothe inflammation. Many of the essential oils are also anti- viral, particularly tea tree and eucalyptus. Sinusitis is a very common complaint and can be caused by viral, fungal, bacterial or allergic reactions. Again steam inhalations will work very well for this problem and for example, a combination of some or all of the following oils, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender 22 West Kerry Live

and pine can be used. Put three to ten drops (check your tolerance levels adding the essential oils drop by drop) in a bowl pouring on a half-litre of boiled water, then covering the head with a towel and inhaling the steam making sure you close your eyes. If the common cold can make you feel miserable influenza can knock you back for a week or more and here bed rest is inevitable. Again the formula elder, yarrow and peppermint taken three times a day will help to relieve the symptoms and should be taken at the onset of this virus. Anti-microbial herbs such as Echinacea and thyme can be used and a moderately hot bath with anti-microbial essential oils can help to kill the viral infection. Expectorant herbs can also be used here and treatment if initiated at the first sign of infection will be more effective. Lower respiratory illnesses such as chronic or acute bronchitis can be supported with herbs such as elecampane, which I talked about in the previous issue together with Echinacea, mullein, coltsfoot and garlic. Garlic is great for the upper and lower respiratory system as the volatile oils are excreted through the lungs making garlic useful in infections, such as, chronic bronchitis, respiratory catarrh and recurrent colds and flu. While raw garlic is best for this purpose a good garlic supplement that has been dehydrated or freeze dried can also be used. If you’re brave enough you could crush some raw garlic and mix in with some honey then pour some hot water over this with some lemon for its taste and vitamin c content. Trust me it actually tastes good! Garlic can be used as a preventative medicine against many infectious conditions particularly of the digestive and respiratory systems. A number of herbs have been discussed in this article with many of them easily found in the home, in your local health shop and also here in Nature’s Knowledge. The list of herbs is not comprehensive for all respiratory problems but will allow you to initiate some of the home remedies at the onset of the illnesses outlined above. That nasty cold or flu onset can be halted or relieved while lower respiratory illnesses, such as, acute bronchitis can be eased and supported with timely attention to a herbal regime. Other more chronic respiratory illnesses can be supported and alleviated with herbs in conjunction with a herbalist or medical practitioner. Preparation and Dosage; Tea infusions can be taken three times a day with two teaspoons of dried herb per cup. Tincture dosages can vary so check with your herbalist for this. Safety considerations; Essential oils are highly concentrated and it is advisable to know your own safety limits here when using steam inhalations or using essential oils in the bath Sage is contraindicated in pregnancy and breast feeding as it is a uterine stimulant. While sage does contain thujone which is toxic in excess, correct dosage is perfectly safe

www.westkerrylive.ie

Coltsfoot should not be taken for a prolonged period of time as it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Correct dosage for short periods is however safe particularly when taken in tea form where the concentration of these alkaloids is very low Echinacea is contraindicated for people who have an allergy to the Asteracea family and theoretically it may be contraindicated for people on immunosuppressant therapies Garlic may potentiate the activity of anti-coagulant medications and raw garlic at high doses can irritate the intestinal mucosa Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted by email at: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109

Mutton Pies for Gairdín Mhuire Angela Pháid and Louise Manning spent a week making 350 Mutton pies for the Dingle food Festival in memory of the late Maura Pháid to raise funds for Gáirdín Mhuire - Day care centre. Máire's Mother and Aunt were both regular visitors to Gáirdín Mhuire, where they were always so well taken care of and Máire herself regularly raised funds for the centre down through the years. The idea to commemorate Máire and raise funds came from Margerette Kavanagh from the Marina Inn who also generously supplied the ingredients needed. Máire worked there as a chef for many years prior to her untimely passing and her mutton pies were considered to be the finest in Dingle. Angela and Louise were joined on the day by Bernie Pháid and the three ladies sold the pies on the food trail during the Dingle food festival where they raised a total of €1250.

Trí shúile sheisear filí Éireannacha, féachann an scannán ar na coincheapa: dúthaigh, pearsantacht agus inspioráid. An dáimh le dúthaigh a mhúnlaigh an tsamhlaíocht liteartha Ghaelach agus an féinaitheantas Éireannach ón gcianaimsir anuas. Tá saibhreas de shaghas eile seachas maoin saolta cruthaithe ag an tsamhlaíocht seo. Manglam de chroí agus cloigeann atá i bhFís na Fuiseoige, scrúdaítear an ceangal idir an Duine agus an Dúthaigh, mar a léirítear i bhfilíocht agus seanchas áitiúil na Gaeilge ó ré na bpágánach i leith. Siad na filí finnéithe na staire, traidisiún liteartha gan bhriseadh, an traidisiún is ársa ar oileán na hÉireann. Déanadh an scannánaíocht thar thréimhse bliana, feictear cuid mhaith den talamh ón aer: Corca Dhuibhne, Uíbh Ráthach, Cill Airne, Cill Mhantáin, Corcaigh, Béal Feirste, Conamara, Gaeltacht Dhún na nGall. Is deacair duine agus dúthaigh a dhealú in Éirinn. Céad bliain ó Éirí Amach na Cásca, dearbhaíonn Fís na Fuiseoige an ceangal atá againn le talamh na hÉireann agus an tionchar a imríonn sé seo ar ár samhlaíocht ar ár dtuiscint agus ar ár n-anam mothála. There will be a chance to see Fís na Fuiseoige (The Lark’s View), a new film by Dingle man, Aodh Ó Coileáin, at the Blasket Centre, Dún Chaoin, Saturday, 29 October at 8pm. The film has just returned from Chicago where it played to a full house at the Siskel Film Centre, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as part of the 2nd Irish American Movie Hooley. The film traces the connections between Irish people and the land as manifested in poetry. Sense of place has informed and inspired the Irish literary imagination since earliest times. The film stars poets Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Paddy Bushe as well as local people Maidhc Bruic, Baile Ghainín and Máire Ní Chinnéide, Baile Dháith. In April this year, Fís na Fuiseoige was awarded best cinematography at the Earth Day Film Festival in San Francisco. The film was premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival in February and played at the Phoenix Cinema Dingle as part of Féile na Bealtaine 2016. There will be a wine and canapé reception at 8pm before this special screening in Ionad an Bhlascaoid. The evening will be free of charge and all are welcome.

Killorglin Students Exhibit at Europe’s largest Maker Showcase

From October 14th – 16th two young second year students from Killorglin Community College will take their place at Europe’s largest Maker Faire in Rome, Italy. Maker Faire Global is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. It’s a place where people of all ages and backgrounds gather together to show what they are making, and share what they are learning. With over 600 inventions on display in 2015 and more than 100 thousand visitors, Maker Faire Rome is the world’s largest exhibition after the “Area Bay” and “New York” in the US. Jack Nagle and Eoghan McKenna have qualified, out of a field of thousands, to exhibit their medical device ‘Dreamy Baby Prop’. The two young men, who are only 14, designed, developed and manufactured this medical device themselves and are hopeful that it will make a considerable impact in Rome in October where there is an expected 600 inventions and more than 100,000 visitors. ‘Dreamy Baby Prop’ is an affordable cot (or adaptation to a cot) that allows a parent to effortlessly raise their baby to the medically recommended 30-degree elevation to help them gain relief from reflux, head colds and sinus irritation. Parents all over the world can relate to trying to raise cots single headedly, sometimes with a very upset & sick baby in their arms, and often in the early hours of the morning. This device does not solve the reflux problem itself but it does help the baby get some rest so as to make it easier to deal with. Jack and Eoghan have young siblings and have witnessed the difficulties that ‘reflux’ presents for them and their parents. This is where the idea was initially germinated. From there they set about researching, investigating and developing their idea. Now at prototype stage two they are looking forward to further developing it and possibly bringing it to market. Mentored by their Design & communications teacher, Anthony Griffin, they have utilised traditional and state of the art technologies to bring this project from concept to reality. They have already exhibited the project at SciFest in Kerry and at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS. The two students have qualified out of 1000’s of applications from across Europe and are being flown to Rome and accommodated in a hotel for five nights as part of the achievement. They will be accompanied by Donal Brosnan, a teacher from Killorglin Community College, and some family members also will travel for this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

Vive le Baroque! The Scotia Ensemble will be bringing Baroque music to Dingle on Saturday the 29th October. The Scotia Ensemble is Kerry’s first and only professional orchestra, set up in January 2016 with the aid of an Arts Act Grant from Kerry County Council. The musicians in the orchestra are working professional musicians based in Kerry, but who perform all around the country and internationally. Members of the Scotia Ensemble have played with orchestras in Ireland, England and the US and have performed in venues all over the world, from the National Concert Hall to Carnegie Hall in New York. Leader, Niamh Varian-Barry and principal Cellist, Maria O’Connor, also perform regularly with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra and The RTE Concert Orchestra. The orchestra also includes three gifted young musicians drawn from the County as part of the orchestra’s gifted students mentoring programme. Having had a very successful series of concerts in June focussing on Irish music and Irish classical music, for this series of concerts the orchestra have decided to go back in time and to focus exclusively on Baroque music. This concert will feature some of classical music’s greatest and best known composers, namely Bach, Handel, Corelli and Vivaldi. The orchestra will perform some of the all-time favourite works from this era, such as Pachelbel’s Canon, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, the Albinoni Adagio for Strings and one of Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos, as well as a number of famous concerti grossi. Many of the pieces played by the orchestra have featured in countless films, television shows and adverts, and will be familiar to all audiences.

Campfest 2016 At The Railway Tavern, Camp

Teagmháil: Deirdre (086) 850 4551 or Aoife on (086) 856 0562 or email deirdregranville@gmail.com

This weekend vehicles come from every corner and county in the country and descend on Camp for a weekend of ceol agus craic and plenty of VW chat and fun. Since its inception in 2003 the annual “Camp in Camp” has grown in strength from 4 campervans to up to 60 vans in recent years. Every year the whole event grows stronger and stronger and as a result it has now become one of the biggest VW events in Ireland today. Whether you drive a VW van, Bus, Campervan or Beetle, or even have an interest in the VW scene - all are welcome.

For renewal of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann membership, which covers all competitions and Comhaltas magazine for the year, fees are €6 junior and €12 senior, €20 for Family. Membership to Anne Granville, c/o Siopa Decor, Sráid Eoin. For date of CCÉ Craobh an Aghasaigh AGM and other news follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/ceoltoiridhuibhneach

It all kicks of on Friday evening (14th October) for a chill out after the long drive down. On Saturday morning about 11.30am they set off in a convoy from The Railway Tavern out the road, up the Conor Pass to the viewing platform to admire the Kerry landscape and then on down to Dingle for a drive through the town. The convoy of VWs provide quite a sight. On from Dingle they head out to Tom Crean's South Pole Inn for a tea/coffee and then a short spin down onto Inch beach where they line up the whole convoy for a few pictures and then a spot of lunch. After lunch it is back to The Railway Tavern for a few hours relaxation before the ceol agus craic. That evening they also have an annual auction for nominated charities, which this year are Down Syndrome Limerick and Meningitis Research. At the auction it is all about having a bit of craic, with plenty of banter, where many donated items, VW themed or anything quirky, are auctioned off to raise much needed funds for these charities. After the auction is over there's more ceol agus craic, before the Sunday afternoon trip home. The organisers would like to make a special mention for Mike and Ann O’Neill, who year after year throw open their fantastic pub to them with the traditional Kerry welcome and one of the main reasons that this event has gone from strength to strength over the years and, as already mentioned, has become one of the biggest VW events in Ireland today.

Caithfead a rá go raibh an chóir agus an fháilt go diail ar fad. Ba dheacair dul tharais. Bhí foireann an óstáin agus an bainisteoir Daniele go hiontach. Bhiodar ag iarraidh daoine a chur ar a suaimhneas díreach mar a bheadh acu sa bhaile. Cinnte bhronfainn 5 Réalt don Óstán seo. Ach chuaidh daoine ar a gconlán féin gan aon chabhair. Bhí saineolaithe áitiúil ann leis an lucht siulóide seo againne. A threorú. Bhíodh siulóidí ‘cruaidh agus ‘bog’ ann gach lá ar feadh seachtaine, fé ghrian bhreá. Ar na siúlóidithe seo againne ná raibh aon fonn, luath chodladh ortha agus a bhí lán do spórt, magadh agus eachtraithe, bhí Carol uí Laoithe, Mícheál Mac Guidhir, Tomás Buckley ón mBóthar Buí Chorcaí, Noel agus Berní Feirtéar a chuir tús le amhránaíocht. Scéalta ón Díseart Glac do shuaimhneas

Bhí fothragadh agus rangás ar an mbaile an deireadh seachtaine seo caite leis an fhéile bhia. Ba mhaith ann í agus na daoine ar fad a mealladh go Corca Dhuibhne dá barr. Ní fearr rud a dhéanfaimís anois ná am a chaitheamh i nGáirdíní an Díseart sara dtagann aon scríob eile inár dtreo. Bímíd ag rith agus ag rás le linn an tséasúir agus gá againn anois le tamall macnaimh agus suaimhnis tar éis obair an bhiaiste. Ceist bheag – bh’feadaraís cé chomh sean is atá an crann i reilig na mban rialta?

Ceol sa Díseart

Bíonn cleachtaí ceoil ag na córacha sa Díseart an aimsir seo – cór faoi stiúir Ghabor Pele agus an cór Soiscéalach le Linda Madiera. Bhí cór agus ceolfhoireann Ghabor le clos le déanaí ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta agus iad páirteach san aifreann i Séipéal Naomh Uinseann ar an mBuailtín. Bhíodar ar fheabhas.

Cúrsa Ealaíne le Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin

Beidh an cúrsa ealaíne – le béim ar shaothar Harry Clarke - ar siúl gach Déardaoin 10/17/24 Samhain sa Díseart óna 7.30 i.n. go 9.30 i.n. Beidh turas go Baile Átha Cliath go dtí an Dánlann Náisiúnta agus Dánlann Hugh Lane mar chuid den gcúrsa – ar dháta a bheidh oiriúnach do na rannpháirtithe. Costas €25 – gan an costas go Baile Átha Cliath san áireamh. Claraigh le foireann an Díseart –roimh 3 Samhain. Bíonn an Diseart ar oscailt Luan – Aoine ó 9.00-5.00 i.n. Agus ar an Satharn ó 10.00-4.00 i.n.

Chill out in the Díseart Gardens

The Dingle Food Festival was amazing – the town hectic and noisy for the weekend. Much credit is due to the festival committee for the huge numbers of people the festival attracted to the area. All is quiet again allowing us time for reflection. Why not spend a little time in the Díseart Gardens before any other storms come upon us? A question – how old is the tree in the nuns’ graveyard?

Music in the Díseart

Music is emanating from the Díseart these times with both choirs – one under Gabor Pele’s direction and the Gospel Choir with Linda Madeira – practising diligently. Gabor’s choir and orchestra were heard lately on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta during mass in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. They were marvellous.

Fr Jim Sheehy is offering two talks at the Díseart as an opportunity for reflection and discussion on the subject of Celtic Christian Spirituality and Culture 1: “An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality and Culture, and the Early Irish Church” On Wednesday 19th of October 8.00pm to 9.30pm 2: “An Diseart - a Centre for the promotion of Celtic Christian Spirituality and Culture” On Wednesday 26th of October 8.00pm to 9.30pm The Díseart was founded by Monsignor Pádraig O’Fiannachta as an Academic Institute for study and research into Celtic Spirituality, Theology and Culture. He was convinced, however, that the work of the Díseart had an important Pastoral mission which was to inform and enrich the faith, especially within the local community, by promoting through talks, liturgies, meditation, and other practical expressions of faith, a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Celtic Spiritual and Cultural heritage which was redeemed and transformed by the Spirit of the Risen Christ and the message of his Gospel giving a unique expression and shape to the Early Irish Christian Church which became a great and leading light in the Dark Ages of Medieval Europe.

Camp Juniors It has been a great start to the Season for the JUNIORS with big numbers registered, old and new managers signed up, new training kits, goals being scored, points going up on the board, National Cup excitement and lots and lots of great plans for the season ahead.

D & R CONSTRUCTION BUILDING AND CONCRETE SPECIALISTS

ACADEMY - Great numbers of kids, boys and girls signed up to the Academy this season and a great response also from adults wanting to step into the coaching world! (Sure what better way to spend time with your child through the years). In recent weeks there has been a super Blitz with teams across all ages from St Brendan’s Park…..(never has the Sportsfiield seen so much action), new training tops arriving in (thanks again to sponsor Adrienne Dowd) and last weekend saw a surprise visit from ex JUNIORS player and now Republic O Ireland / Brighton & Hove Albion player Rian O’Sullivan. Rian spent the morning coaching the kids, helping our coaches and inspiring everyone around him. It was a brilliant morning for the club and we wish Rian continued success in his career in the top flight.

• ALL CONCRETE WORKS

The 12s - First season out in the big time for this bunch of players as the 12s is that age when proper competition starts. With a good squad, new management for Micko Horan, Tim Goldman and Stephen Cullinane the JUNIORS have started their league campaign well with a good 5-3 win at home to Killarney Celtic (scorers on the day, Paudie Fitzgerald and Cillian O Neill (Cloghane), and CJ Daniels (Castle). Next up for the lads is a home game v Killorgan FC this Saturday

• FOOTPATHS, BASES, TANKS

U14s & U15s in the NATIONAL CUP 2017 - The National Cup Competition is always an exciting affair for the club and players alike. An open draw means we could be up against any team from the Munster region in the opening games. The 14s drew a gritty Janesboro FC from Limerick City in the Rd 1 and had an impressive 4-1 win, they now face Mastergeeha FC in Rd 2 this Saturday down at the Sportsfield. The 15s got throught Rd 1 against Ballylacky FC from Nenagh but an away game against top Limerick side Regional Utd was too much of an ask last weekend, going down 3-0. Still good potential in both these squads and they will certainly be chasing down the Premier and Div 1 titles respectively this season.

Playing in Div 1 they had a convincing win over Ballyheigue in the season opener and this was followed with a hard fought 2-1 victory away to Ballyhar Dynamos. Killian Falvey, (Annascaul), has been in great form and scored the 2 vital goals in that game. Next up, another tough encounter, away to Inter Kenmare this Saturday. UPCOMING EVENTS - A couple of dates to note, Sat Nov 5th will see the launch of our Fundraiser 2017 Calendar and we are delighted to have RTE’s Bernard O Shea down on the day to mark the launch. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Cad is Plean Teanga ann? Tá cloiste ag gach duine ag an bpointe seo fén bplean teanga don Ghaeilge sa dúiche seo. Eiseofar an plean teanga ag deireadh na bliana seo, mar sin, tá sé tábhachtach tuiscint chruinn bheith againn ar cad is plean teanga ann. Anseo tugtar freagra achomair ar an gceist sin: Cad is plean teanga ann? Bíonn orainn go léir pleanáil a dhéanamh gach lá, ó phleanáil do bhéilí, do laetha saoire go pleanáil do oideachas ár gcuid leanaí. Ní mór pleanáil a dhéanamh do theangacha chomh maith céanna. Fiú i gcás na mórtheangacha domhanda ar nós an Bhéarla agus na Spáinnise, bíonn pleanáil leanúnach ar siúl maidir le téarmaí nua a chumadh do réimsí mar theicneolaíocht, ríomhaireacht agus leigheas nuair a chruthaítear rud nua. I gcás teangacha atá timpeallaithe ag mórtheangacha domhanda agus i gcás teangacha atá faoi bhagairt a mbáis, bíonn gá le síorphleanáil chun úsáid na dteangacha sin a neartú, a leathnú agus a bhuanú. Sin atá ag tarlú i gcás na Gaeilge anseo. Tá gá le plean a chur le chéile chun go mairfidh an Ghaeilge mar theanga phobail agus i dtreo is go mbeidh líon na daoine a úsáideann go laethúil í ag fás de shíor. Sin an chúis gur leag Acht na Gaeltachta 2012 próiseas pleanála teanga amach don Ghaeltacht. Faoin Acht seo, tá na ceantair Ghaeltachta ag cur plean teanga le chéile. Tá an próiseas seo ar siúl i gCorca Dhuibhne le tamall anuas. Reachtáladh fócasghrúpaí le páirithe leasmhara agus sainíodh spriocanna atá le baint amach tríd an bplean. Beidh tréimhse cuíosach fada chun na spriocanna sin a chur i bhfeidhm agus muna bhfuil ag éirí linn an sprioc a bhaint amach, beidh deis againn an sprioc a athrú nó sprioc eile a chur ina háit. Murab ionann agus pleananna eile a scríobhadh go dtí seo, is é an pobal féin atá ag cur an plean seo le chéile. Níl ann do theanga ná do phlean gan phobal. Déan deimhin de breis eolais a fháil fén bplean agus bíodh ionchur agat ann más suim todhchaí na teanga. - An Dr Muiris Ó Laoire Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Thrá Lí, Trá Lí, Co. Chiarraí. Cuireadh an scéal inár láthair ar stáitse i rith Cheiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 2016. Cuireadh go mór leis an gcur i láthair mar gurbh í an ceoltóir aitheanta Máire Bhreathnach a chóirigh an ceol agus gurbh é an sárcheardaí Billí Mag Fhloinn a dhein an dearadh. Dar leis an gclár bhí “stáitsiú spleodrach” romhainn amach. Níor leor an cur síos sin áfach, mar bhí i bhfad níos mó ná sin i gceist. De ghnáth, agus na soilse á múchadh, bíonn gach súil dírithe ar an stáitse. Sa chás seo, tumadh díreach isteach sa dorchadas sinne, dorchadas agus doircheacht agus gach a bhaineann leo, eagla, piseogacht agus amhras. Dingle Notes. Richard Williams The 10th Anniversary of the DINGLE FOOD FESTIVAL certainly lived up to expectations with huge crowds and a wonderful choice of food and drink over two beautiful sunny days which will live long in the memory after a very mixed summer. Almost every door in town was open and offering samples of various foods and beverages and the street entertainment really contributed to the carnival atmosphere which was very evident throughout the weekend. Congratulations to the organisers and all who provided the food beverage and entertainment as many hours of hard work must have gone into putting on such a show which appeared to go off like clockwork from start to finish. Roll on October 2017 and another Food Festival!!!. I saw many small operators displaying their produce but one local family outlet was the O’Connors Fruit and Veg shop with Maharees Juices which really tasted delicious and right from their own garden. SAFETY - Just to remind all road users whether walking, cycling, jogging or running to wear HIGH VIS or BRIGHT CLOTHES to help improve road safety and be easily identified at all times by passing traffic.A reminder too for motorists to put on indicators as early as possible when passing pedestrians or cyclists and thereby alert following traffic of the impending dangers ahead. FOOTBALL- Congratulations to the Dingle Seniors team and mentors on a whole hearted display in the County Championship this year and unfortunately lady luck or split decisions do not seem to fall our way on the big days. However I am convinced there is championship success not too far off for this club so keep up the spirit lads and bounce back for another tilt at the title. The annual John Sheehy Memorial Blitz for under 10 teams takes place on Saturday next October 15th in Pairc An Aghasaigh starting at 10.30a. FESTIVALS- No sooner is one over than another crops up this time the

first DINGLE FOLK FEST this weekend. Dara Herlihy and friends have certainly put a great programme of entertainment together with many popular local and national musicians and singers to appear at various venues throughout the town from early Friday to Late Sunday night. No excuses just go out and join in the fun of the inaugural Folk Fest. Full programme of events elsewhere in this edition. MEP VISIT- An Diseart is the venue this Friday for the first official Open Day Visit of our MEPS Sean Kelly and Liadh Ni Riada . The session starts at 11.30a.m.and they will answer questions from the public on matters relating to their work in the European Parliament. Its open to the public but if one wishes to have a private interview prior booking is required. TIDY TOWNS- We were lucky again this year as the judges were impressed enough with the work in progress to give Dingle an additional 6 marks in the National Competition. A most unexpected increase I might add as the poor attendance at our work evenings and inclement weather hampered our plans but it appears all other towns and villages also got similar increases . Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service

Question My friend has been invited to take part in free cancer screening. I haven’t received an invitation but she says it’s a national free screening programme. How do I take part? Answer There are free screening programmes to help detect or prevent a number of types of cancer. BowelScreen, The National Bowel Screening Programme, aims to find bowel cancer at an early stage in people who have no symptoms. It offers free screening every two years to men and women aged 60 to 69. If you are in this age group you can ring BowelScreen on Freephone 1800 45 45 55 to check your details are on the register. If you are on the register you will receive an invitation to take part in the BowelScreen programme. CervicalCheck,The National Cervical Screening Programme, tests women aged 25 to 60 for changes in the cells of cervix. Early detection and treatment can prevent cervical cancer. If you are aged between 25 and 60 and have never had a CervicalCheck smear test you can simply make an appointment with a GP practice or clinic registered with CervicalCheck. You can find one in your area by visiting cervicalcheck.ie or by calling

Freephone 1800 45 45 55. A letter of invitation is not needed to make an appointment and attend for a first test. BreastCheck, The National Breast Screening Programme, invites women to a free mammogram (x-ray of the breast) every two years. The screening has been available to women aged 50 to 64 but is currently being extended to also include women aged 65 to 69. If you

have not received an invitation you can check if you are registered by visiting breastcheck.ie or by calling freephone 1800 45 45 55. Bunions Eddie O’ Grady A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the start of your big toe. This enlargement actually results from a misalignment of the big toe joint (metatarsal phalangeal joint). This causes the big toe to point inwards The medical term for the condition is ‘’hallux valgus’’. Sometimes there can be additional bone formation. Wearing tight, narrow shoes may contribute to development of the condition. Bunions can also develop due to biomechanical defects, such as overpronation, stress on your foot or a medical condition, such as arthritis. This deformity is usually progressive increasing over time, although the symptoms may or may not. The enlarged joint can also become inflamed, red and tender. A small fluid-filled sac (bursa) adjacent to the joint can also become inflamed (bursitis), leading to additional swelling and pain. A deeper pain within the joint may occur if arthritis develops in later stages of the deformity. Bunions most commonly affect women. Some studies report that bunion occur nearly 10 times more frequently in women. This may be due to the fact that women are more inclined to wear tight fitting shoes, especially high-heel and narrow-toed shoes. Complaints of bunions are reported to be more prevalent in people who wear closed shoes than in barefoot populations. Other risk factors for the development of bunions include abnormal formation of the bones of the foot at birth (congenital) and arthritic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, repetitive stresses to the foot from running/jumping on hard surfaces can lead to bunion formation. Bunions are common in ballet dancers. Nonsurgical treatments such as rest and wearing wide fitting shoes (preferably with a supportive sole) can often relieve the irritating pain of bunions. Anti-inflammatory medications can help to ease pain/inflammation. Local cold-pack application is sometimes helpful. Bunion shields or pads can reduce pressure on the bunion. Custom insole orthotics can sometimes slow the progression of the bunion and address underlying biomechanical causes such as overpronation. Inflammation of the joint at the base of the big toe can often be relieved by a local injection of cortisone. For those whose bunions cause persisting pain, a surgical operation is considered for correction of the bunion . Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. La Leche League Evelin Peenar The monthly meeting of the La Leche League Dingle/West Kerry takes place on the second Thursday of every month from 10.30am at West Kerry Community Hospital, Dingle in order to facilitate a mother-to-mother support and a safe environment for discussion, with a cup of coffee/tea, for breastfeeding mothers and for all women interested in breastfeeding matters. More informal monthly coffee mornings take place on the last Saturday of every month from 11.00am at the Grey’s Lane Bistro, Dingle. By breastfeeding our children, we lay the foundations of a legacy for good health; the work done by La Leche League Leaders builds a legacy of breastfeeding knowledge in our communities and the families we work alongside. La Leche League’s (LLL) model of breastfeeding peer support has been one of the most consistent and successful for the last 50 years in Ireland. Following on from its foundation in America in 1956, LLL came to Ireland only 10 years later and currently reaches over 6000 mothers per year! Expectant and breastfeeding mothers are provided with up-to-date breastfeeding information on a regular basis at monthly meetings, coffee mornings and through 24/7 phone support. When necessary, visits to mothers’ own homes are arranged by the Leaders, who are all volunteers. LLL groups across Ireland are also reachable on the internet and through social media. LLL Leaders are trained and accredited to International standards and regularly update their breastfeeding knowledge through annual training. They also have the opportunity to attend the biggest event in the breastfeeding calendar with an annual Conference in March. Each year, LLL Leaders, parents, medical professionals, and students are provided with the chance to hear the latest research from breastfeeding experts and renowned authors from around the world at this weekend-long event. In Ireland, a country with one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, the need for breastfeeding support is as necessary as it was when LLL began. Every breastfeed makes a difference, and helping one breastfeeding mother can have a knock-on effect. By supporting each individual mother with her baby, LLL Ireland continues to build a legacy and to help breastfeeding rates in Ireland to increase. A La Leche League event is the perfect place for a mother to receive the support she needs in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. Information about LLL Ireland can be found on website www.lalecheleagueireland.com and www.facebook.com/LaLecheLeagueIreland The contact persons for La Leche League Dingle/West Kerry are Fionna 087 9711342 and Sylvia 087 6636635, the Facebook site is https://www.facebook.com/lalecheleaguedingle/

Beware of the Sugar Monsters in your Kitchen! Irene Ní Fhlannúra There’s no getting away from it but sugar may finally be getting its comeuppance. In this week’s budget the long-threatened Sugar Tax has finally been announced. Newspaper articles and TV programmes are jumping on the bandwagon in a unified assault on the sugar industry. The mounting evidence demonstrates that sugar is the common denominator in most modern day illnesses and the rising obesity epidemic. This shift in strategy by health authorities is greatly welcomed but it remains worrying that ambiguity in the processed food industry and the lack of simple nutrition labelling will stall progress and have minimal impact on our society. While the “powers that be” debate about the next step, do not hang around waiting for the drip feed of information that will eventually come your way - seek out the enemy in your own cupboards and make some positive changes! In Nature, sweetness is delivered through plant foods - fruit, grains and vegetables and in milk, as lactose, for young baby mammals. It is unlikely that we could eat enough of these foods in their whole forms to take in too much sugar as indicated by current trends. Our over-consumption of sugar and its consequence on our health is down to the added sugars, some of which are hidden ingredients in processed foods and drinks. In Nature, sugar is found in whole foods alongside fibre, minerals and vitamins for the body to process these natural sugars safely and efficiently. In contrast, processed foods give us sugar (in its various forms), stripped away from the natural plant, contorted and contrived into something that no longer resembles “food” but is agreeable to the modern palate - mostly sweet! Sugar is now a feature in most meals, drinks and snacks we choose everyday from breakfast-time to bedtime. Currently the recommended daily allowance for sugar is 120g for men and 90g for women. The problem with guidelines is in the interpretation and the lack of common sense applied. A teaspoon of sugar is the 4g, meaning that according to guidelines 30 teaspoons of table sugar is an acceptable amount for the average man! This is neither helpful nor accurate. An average breakfast of 250ml orange juice, 40g cereal with dried berries and a pot of low fat yogurt can easily clock up over 15 teaspoons of sugar in one sitting. Alternatively, a break44 West Kerry Live

fast containing natural-state foods - 1 whole orange, bowl of porridge with 1 tsp honey and a small pot of unsweetened natural yogurt with fresh blueberries will come in under 4 teaspoons of sugar but with all the fibre and goodness of the whole food intact! The second breakfast will also provide slow-release energy to keep you sustained throughout the morning and reduce cravings for more sugar that usually follows a high-sugar meal. Simple swaps from processed to natural foods is the best guideline available to us - as Nature rarely gives gets it wrong. Looking through your cupboards and fridge for sugary foods may throw up a few surprises. Obviously biscuits, cakes, jams, syrups, fizzy drinks and the like are loaded in sugar. Not so obvious are the fruit juices, breads, crackers, breakfast cereals, sauces and relishes. For example, an average jar of tomato based pasta sauce 450g can contain up to 40g of sugar, that’s 10 teaspoons! A tomato sauce made from fresh tomatoes or even canned chopped tomatoes only needs enough sugar to reduce the acidity - roughly one teaspoon per 400g can of chopped tomatoes. The same can be applied to breakfast cereals. A 30g bowl of regular Cheerios contains just over 12g sugar (3 tsp) compared with 2 weetabix which contain less than half a teaspoon of sugar. Processed breakfast cereals are normally eaten in bigger quantities than the 30g guideline which also needs to be factored in to our equations! Reading labels is useful but can be time consuming - the best rule of thumb is to stick close to Nature and choose your food in the most natural form possible, free of added ingredients including sugar. For baking and cooking, sugar may be added but at least you can control the amount and the type of sugar used. If you are buying processed foods compare ingredients and sugar content. Any foods with a sugar content of 15g per 100g and above is considered a highsugar food, under 5g is considered low. It is a good thing that the spotlight has been put on sugar but there are fears that food processors will make bigger efforts to hide sugar in the ingredients list, using alternative names or artificial sweeteners as is already happening. Taking on the food industry is not a realistic option for most of us but taking on your own shopping trolley is! In our first game we overcame An Gaeltacht. Up next was Castlegregory and after a very tight encounter we went down by a point. Not too be disheartened our coaches rallied the troops and in the next two games recorded victories over Dingle and Annascaul/Lispole. As a result we qualified for the final against Castlegregory. We started very well and built up an early lead of 3 points to 1 with scores coming from Mark Murphy, Liam Evans and Fionan Griffin. With 6 minutes left Mark Murphy got a poacher goal that left 5 between the sides but back came Castle and 1:01 in the closing few minutes made for a nail biting finish but our warriors held out for a brilliant win and a first trophy for this age group. A big thank you to Annascaul for the invite and a very well run tournament. Well done to Mark Murphy who received player of the tournament and to all the players that played there part on the day. Foclóir comhfhoghar atá anseo: focail a bhfuil an fhuaim chéanna acu ach cialla éagsúla, iad buailte le chéile in abairtí baotha ag an bhFochlac Fochlach - chomh maith le léaráidí iontach cliste le Séamus Dunbar. Feilfidh na habairtí seo do thráth na gceist nó tomhas, agus méadóidh siad stór focal is tuiscint teanga an léitheora.

If you understand the sentence above, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this book and if not, you’ll enjoy it all the more.

9th November

This is an Irish language homophone dictionary, in which words which sound the same yet have different meanings are brought crashing together by the Fochlac Foclach (the Verbose First-Order Bardic Poet) to create wonderfully silly sentences - along with superbly clever cartoons by Séamus Dunbar. These sentences would be perfect for a quiz or competition, and will improve the reader’s vocabulary and language skill.’ - Coiscéim
