We are asking everyone on the peninsula to try and use a bike for at least some part of their trip to work. It’s strange but true that the more bikes on the road, the safer cycling becomes. Primary schools are encouraging pupils to do so, and their parents might also come along. This will culminate in a Cycle Bus from Dingle Hospital at 8.40am on the final day, Friday 19th of May.

Why Asparagus is so Hot Right Now!

Asparagus has enjoyed an almost lofty reputation since it was first depicted in Egyptian wall art around 3,000 BC. A revered plant among the Roman upper classes, Greek botanists and early medicine practitioners, asparagus continues to hold its head up high today and is widely available to all people, no matter their standing in the community! Perhaps its spearlike shape gives it an air of superiority or maybe the celebrity chefs made it “all fancy” – whatever the reason, there is a lot to be celebrated once those shoots emerge from the ground and the short-lived asparagus season begins!

In Ireland home-grown asparagus is at its best from the first week of May to the middle of June - roughly 40 days and nights of pure asparagus joy! Local veg growers say that the season can begin a little later for more westerly counties, so be patient! As the season comes to an end, the spears begin to open and the stems tend to get woody and tough. Like any vegetable, true to its season, asparagus’ timely appearance prepares the body for the bounty of heart-friendly Summer foods that will shortly be in great supply. Rich in rutin, a bioflavonoid, this nutrient strengthens our capillaries and has been used to help lower blood pressure, treat haemorrhoids and varicose veins as well as prevent and treat venous leg ulcers. Another nutrient, folate, much discussed in the media recently, is also in rich supply - a 100g serving of asparagus provides a whopping 67% of our daily requirement. Folate is required to complete red cell formation, reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood and supports the entire nervous system. For women of child-bearing age, folate is wellknown for its role in preventing neural tube defects in newborns. Other nutrients of significance include vitamins A, C, E and K, dietary fibre and some minerals.

Asparagus is quite the hero in the gut too providing a special type of fibre, called Inulin, in great quantity! Inulin fibre, also known as a prebiotic, does not get broken down in the first segments of the intestinal tract, but makes it way undigested to the large intestine. Once there, it becomes an ideal food source for beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. A healthy colony of such bacteria is associated with better nutrient absorption, lower risk of allergy and lower risk of colon cancer. Most of the vitamin K provided by asparagus as with other greens is in fact created by friendly bacteria in the large intestine – we provide for them and they provide for us, perfect synergy! Vitamin K, most noted for its role in the clotting mechanism is also vital for bone and cardiovascular health. With the asparagus season comes the age-old debate as to whether or not asparagus produces a funny smell in urine. There is some evidence that sulphur containing compounds may be attributed to the odour, but it is far from conclusive and should not deter from enjoying it while it is in season. Furthermore, who knows, perhaps asparagus just gives us a greater sense of smell, either way, why is anyone smelling their pee? Another notable claim to fame is its aphrodisiac power, again, no real evidence and hopefully it has nothing to do with the pee smell. Saying that, Marcel Proust, a famed French novelist in the 19th century claimed that asparagus “had the effect of transforming his humble chamber pot into a bowl of aromatic perfume” – not sure if the ladies would agree! The aphrodisiac effect of asparagus is more likely due to its suggestive shape rather than a special trait although any food that nourishes the blood vessels and circulation will also be beneficial to sexual health, particularly for men.

Young seasonal asparagus requires very little preparation or cooking. The thinner the stems the quicker it cooks. It is best steamed for a few minutes in a little water standing upright with the thicker ends in the water. This way the tender spear heads are just lightly steamed and impart loads of flavour, while the thicker stem ends get a good cooking. When you buy asparagus, just break off about an inch or two from the end, rinse and wrap the stems in kitchen paper and store in the fridge. Asparagus will keep in the fridge for days and even longer if you place the stems upright in jar leaving the ends in a little water to prevent them drying out. Here are some of my favourite ways to eat asparagus;

• Roasting asparagus in the oven with a little bit of olive oil and sea salt can bring out its natural sweetness and create a crispy texture. This method of cooking also helps to retain the nutrient content of asparagus.

• Grilling asparagus can give it a smoky flavour and a slightly charred texture. It's a quick and easy way to cook asparagus, and you can season it with your favourite herbs and spices.

• Steaming asparagus is a great way to cook it while preserving its nutritional value. Simply place the asparagus in a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water and steam for a few minutes until tender.

• Asparagus soup: Asparagus soup is a creamy and flavourful way to enjoy this vegetable. You can make it with just a few ingredients like asparagus, onion, garlic and vegetable broth.

• Asparagus can be enjoyed raw in a salad, either chopped or shaved with a vegetable peeler. Add some other veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado, and dress with a light citrusy vinaigrette for a healthy and refreshing meal.

No matter how you choose to prepare asparagus, enjoy it now while it is in season and at its best, yum!

LOW EMISSION SLURRY SPREADING SCHEME AND THE DAIRY EQUIPMENT SCHEME EVENTUALLY OPEN

The Low Emission Slurry Scheme (LESS), and the Dairy Equipment Scheme (DES) will be the fifth and sixth schemes to open to applications. Both are open for applications from this week. TAMS provides funding for capital investments on farms and will be in place for five years with a budget of €370 million:

• Tranche 1 of the scheme opened Wednesday 22 February

• both the Low Emission Slurry Scheme and the Dairy Equipment Scheme open on 8 May 2023

• the remaining four TAMS schemes will open on a phased basis during Tranche 1 which is expected to close on 16 June

LESS is the practice of Low Emission Slurry Spreading (LESS) and is an important environmentally sustainable technology that will facilitate Ireland meeting its environmental commitments through reductions in ammonia and other reactive Nitrogen emissions from soil. The practice leads to greater nutrient recovery from slurries and indirectly improved nutrient use efficiency, as well as a reduced dependency on chemical fertilisers. Investments that are eligible: in the case of LESS, the maximum amount of investment eligible for grant-aid under the Scheme is €40,000 per holding. However, in the case of a joint application by two or more eligible partners under a registered farm partnership, the maximum eligible investment ceilings referred to above shall be increased to €60,000. The investment ceiling under this scheme is NOT subject to the overall TAMS 3 investment ceiling of €90,000 per holding.

A list of the eligible investments is detailed in the scheme Terms and Conditions document at Annex B, and include the following:

• Mobile Slurry Tank with Attachments such as Trailing shoe with macerator, and Shallow injection with macerator

• Retrofit Trailing shoe attachment with macerator to existing tanker, New or retrofit Inlet Choppers, and Flow meters

• Umbilical System including Base pump, hose reel and fittings, Lay flat hose and fittings, Trailing Shoe or Shallow Injection attachments, as well as Flow Meter and Retrofit Trailing shoe attachment to existing umbilical system

• Hydraulic Motor to substitute PTO Shaft is also available

A list of the eligible investments under DES is detailed in the scheme Terms and Conditions document at Annex B, and include the following:

• Milk Storage and Cooling

• Water Heating

• backup PTO generator

• milk recording equipment

• Milking Machine* (see note below)

• Auto Washer for milking machine

For DES Grant aid will only be paid on approved, completed and eligible expenditure and shall be paid at the rate of 40% up to the applicable maximum investment ceiling of €90,000 per holding.

Grant aid will not be paid for (a) second-hand materials or equipment or (b) ex-demo or (c) work carried out by contractors who do not comply with the tax clearance requirements laid down in paragraph 10 of the scheme. Only fixed investments constructed/erected/installed on eligible land are eligible for grant aid.

Grand aid will only be paid on one robotic milking machine or 10 milking machine units in a herringbone style parlour per holding. If an applicant has received grant aid for a Robotic Milking Machine under TAMS II or TAMS3, they will not be eligible for further grant aid for this investment item. Please note a registered farm partnership regardless of numbers of

partners is deemed one holding.

For milking machine investments only, the following additional requirements apply:

• applicants must have at least 10% additional slurry storage above the legal minimum, as set out in clause 5.4 (Investments related to Farm Waste and Farm Nutrient Storage), at date of application for a milking machine. The additional slurry storage must be on either land owned by the applicant, or land that the applicant has on a long-term lease (minimum seven years from date of application)

• applications for milking machine investments are open to all farmers with up to 120 dairy cows on their holding on average in the year preceding application. Farmers with more than 120 cows may apply for all other investments in the DES scheme. Approximately 80% of all dairy farms have 120 dairy cows or less

FARM SAFETY

We have now entered silage season, and contractors are in full swing, or about to become so. And let us hope that it is a good season, as we have had a poor year, so far. Farmers may be advised to hold off on cutting silage until they have sufficient grass cover, as the cold weather has stunted growth in the past two months. And, seven bales per acre, is not a good crop of silage.

But when it comes to drawing silage, and all related machinery traffic, contractors are advised, are urged to be vigilant with their workers/drivers. A tractor is a large industrial machine similar to an articulated truck, with a pulling capacity of 25 to 30 tonne, and more. They must ensure that their drivers use best practice, regarding safety. Anyone caught on their phone or using ear-phones or doing other unacceptable and unsafe practices should be dispatched, with immediate effect. If they want to go on tiktok, or snapchat or whatever, they should do it on their couch, and not while pulling 25 tonne of wilted grass. A split-second can cost a life. Schools will close soon and the little ones will be more likely to be on the roads. We must protect our children.

TOP TIPS ON GETTING RID OF RUSHES, DOCKS AND THISTLES

Having suffered months, ten months in fact of continuous, much land will suffer from a severe infestation of invasive and possible noxious weeds. Grassland weeds are set to escalate over the next few weeks. Rushes thrived in last year’s wet summer, as they out competed grass on land with low soil fertility. Poached fields and poor grass growth also allowed the docks and thistles to multiply. The seeds left in your pasture in 2017 from the above weeds will readily germinate and spread this year if action is not taken. Growing more grass so it can actively compete with weeds such as rushes, is one way of preventing infestation. An acidic soil does not directly favor rushes, but it will significantly inhibit grass growth, so liming low ph. soils is essential. This should be followed with an application of phosphorus and Potassium where necessary to bring your soil nutrient level to the optimum index 3 level. Drainage, including new drains and cleaning of the existing drainage infrastructure can be an effective weed prevention measure. Identify what is the underlying cause of the waterlogged soil by digging test pits before remedial action such as field drains, sub-soiling or mole drains are considered.

RUSHES:- The soft rush is the most common of the many rush species. It is recognised by the dense tuft of brown flowers coming from the side of the stems and a continuous white centre (pith) when the stem is peeled back Soft rush can be controlled with MCPA or 2,4-D, applied in June or July when growth conditions are good and weather is suitable. Strong rushes should be cut and removed, with pesticide applied to the regrowth. Weed wiping with a Glyphosate product such as Roundup or Gallup, using a tractor or quad, has the advantage of the product being applied primarily to the target plant. It uses about 1/3 of the amount of pesticide, (compared to boom spraying) and produces much lower losses to waters. For farmers with Low Input Permanent Pasture in GLAS, chemical control of rushes can only be carried out by weed wiping or spot spraying. MCPA is not licenced for use with either of these application methods.

DOCKS:- Dock seed can remain viable for over 50 years in soil, have a large root system, and are very opportunistic in terms of where they germinate. Open swards or swards after cutting facilitate light reaching the soil surface which allows germination. Best control of docks will be achieved when docks are actively growing and nutrients are actively being transported

to new foliage and roots. If seed stalks are seen on the plant or if the dock has diseased leaves or is under pest attack it is better to cut/top or graze and allow re-growth of the docks before applying chemical. Soil potassium levels should be maintained at index 3, as oversupply of potash favors the higher needs of the dock over grass. Rotating silage ground can also be an effective dock control strategy. Use of herbicides based on dicamba, triclopyr and fluroxypyr (e.g. Dockstar Pro, Ban Dock) will give season-long control of docks plus a wide range of common grassland weeds. Where clover is of consequence, Eagle or Prospect may be applied. If a suitable herbicide is applied to small docks after reseeding, long term control is achieved.

CREEPING THISTLES:- Creeping thistle is the most widespread and troublesome of the thistle family. It mainly spreads by creeping roots which can be meters in length but also spreads by wind-blown feathery seeds (July & August). To make matters worse, it can grow new plants from small fragments of its roots thus appearing to explode when reseeding is carried out. They cause most damage by preventing animals grazing around them. Thistles emerge in the spring at different times so topping is a useful tactic to even up the growth stages before spraying. Chemicals such as 2,4-D, MCPA and dicamba reduce top growth but do not translocate down to the roots. For more persistent control use Thistlex, Pastor or Forefront but follow-up sprays will be needed.

From the 1911 Census in West Kerry Large Families – Part One

Keane. Patrick Keane, 50, and his wife Mary, 49, lived in Knockglassmore and had been married for 22 years. They had 11 children ranging in age from 21 to 4 years. Patrick was a ‘Sub Postmaster’ and his son John, 21, was a ‘Postman’.

Shea. John Shea, 50, and his wife Bridget, 46, lived in Camp and had been married for 19 years in 1911. They had 11 children with 10 of them still living at home on the family farm. The 10 were evenly divided into male and female with the youngest, Maggie, aged 9 months.

The 1911 Census was taken on Sunday, April 2. In this issue we’ll extract information on large families in West Kerry, from Camp to the Blaskets. The Census form recorded not only the number of children in the home on Census night but also the overall number of living children. We’ll start with the parents of ten children.

Brosnan. John Brosnan, 57, and his wife Mary, 47, lived in Castlegregory and had been married for 25 years. They had 10 children. John’s age was recorded as ‘57’ but should be 54 – (smudged error).

John was a blacksmith, his father, Thomas, 83, was a retired blacksmith. John’s sons Michael, 21, Timothy, 19, and John, 17, were all blacksmiths.

O’Connor. Thomas O’Connor, 41, and his wife Norah, 43, lived in Kilshannig, Maharees, and had been married for 18/19 years (smudged). There were 10 children in this family, six girls and four boys, ranging in age from 17 to 2 weeks. Thomas was a farmer and a shopkeeper.

Griffin. John Griffin, 68, and his wife Hanna, 67, lived in Curraduff, Kilgobban, and had been married for 40 years. They had 10 children but only three were living in the family home. This was a farm family but daughter Mary, 23, was a dressmaker.

Griffin. Thomas Griffin, 47, and his wife Minnie, 39, lived in Kilteenbane, Kilgobban, and had been married for 14 years. They had 10 children, 7 sons and 3 daughters aged from 13 to 1 year. Thomas was an ‘Agricultural Labourer’.

O’Donoghue. Michael O’Donoghue , 71, and his wife Mary, 69, had been married for 45 years and had produced 11 children but one of them didn’t survive. Three of the living 10 were in the home in Ballynabooly on Census night.

Johnson. Moving on to 11 children. Michael Johnson, 49, and his wife Mary, 41, lived in Ballinvownig, Dingle, and had been married for 23 years. They had 11 children, 6 boys and 5 girls, all living at home and ranging in age from 22 to 2 years. Michael was a ‘Railway Labourer’. His sons John, 22, and Michael, 20, were ‘Postmen’ while son Richard, 15, was a ‘Telegraph messenger’.

O’Sullivan. Thomas O’Sullivan, 53, and his wife Ellen, 48, had been married for 28 years and had 11 children with 8 of them living at home, four girls and four boys.

Thomas was a ‘Land Steward’. A land steward was a senior servant or agent for a landlord. His daughter Mary, 22, was a ‘Telegraph Clerk’ and his daughter Bridget was a ‘School Teacher’. The family lived on Green Street, Dingle.

Begley. Timothy Begley, 68, and his wife Mary, 65, lived in Lugnagappul, Minard, and had been married for 35 years. Their union had produced 12 children but one had passed away before the Census. Five of the 11 children in this farm family lived at home.

Murphy. Thomas Murphy, 56, and his wife Mary, 47, lived in Lack and had been married for 25 years. Their marriage had produced 11 children with 7 of them still living at home. Thomas was an ‘Agricultural Labourer’.

O’Connor. Michael O’Connor, 49, and his wife, Mary, 44, lived in Kilshannig and had been married for 21 years. The couple had 11 children, 7 boys and 4 girls, ranging in age from 19 to 4 years. There were 15 people in this farming household including a relative and a lodger.

Flaherty. Patrick Flaherty, 45, and his wife Mary, 41 lived in Emlagh West, Dingle, and had been married for 22 years. Mary had given birth to 15 children but four of them had died. The remaining 11 were aged between Ellie, 21, and Molly - one year. Patrick and his son John were fishermen. Cleary. Moving on to 12 children, Thomas Cleary, 50, and his wife Johanna, 42, lived in the Commons of Milltown. They had been married for 25 years. Their marriage produced 16 children but 4 had not survived. Ten of the twelve children were living at home, including the youngest child Margaret – aged 1 month.

Thomas was a miller by profession and probably worked in what was, more recently, Fitzgerald’s mill. His sons John, 21, and Michael, 16, were auxiliary postmen.

Sheehy. James Sheehy, 68, and his wife Mary, 64, lived in Glin South and had been married for 40 years in 1911.Their union had produced 16 children, however, like the Cleary family above, 4 had not survived. This was a farming family with 7 of the 12 children living at home.

Sullivan. James Sullivan, 72, and his wife Mary, 70, lived in Gurteen, Ballynacourty, and had been married for 50 years. The marriage produced 13 children with 12 living in 1911. This was a farming family. Mary’s mother was Ellen Lyne and we met her before. She was aged 101 - the oldest person in West Kerry in 1911.

We would like to thank everyone who travelled, were present with us or watched the funeral mass online. We would like to give special thanks to Laoise Hennessey and all the public health nurses which due to their loving tender care Pádraig’s final days were make so much more comfortable. We are very grateful to the staff in Walsh’s chemist and the Dingle medical centre.

Pádraig’s first anniversary mass will be held on the 21st of May 2023 in Séipeal Naomh Uinsinn, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh.

Pádraig will remain in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace.

Another bit of history from the past - Maureen O'Shea, Dwyer, Camp Camogie is grandmother of Amelia O Regan, our shining star in Munster Rugby.

Almost as if in defiance to the dark and miserable surroundings, the melodic music of a violin, carried on the wind, filling the night air. The music came from the hands of a young Tipperary man, Lawrence Slattery, who holds the inauspicious title of being the first and longest serving POW in the second world war. Lawrence was my great grand uncle.

Throughout his childhood he displayed an immense talent for the violin. He went from playing before the famous musicians John McCormack and Fritz Kreisler, at age eleven, to using that same violin from his youth to sustain himself during his six years of imprisonment. Larry created a camp orchestra in every camp he was transferred to. He knowingly traded his musical expertise with his fellow prisoners in exchange for their language skills, leading him to speak eight languages fluently.

Larry’s story began when he was deployed as a radio operator on the very first RAF mission. The following day war was declared, his plane, shot down by German enemies, was hurled into water, leaving Larry with a broken jaw, broken ankle, and destroying his face. When captured, the Germans saw his injured condition as a perfect opportunity for effective propaganda. They offered Larry a job to work for the ‘German Ministry of Propaganda.’ Their aim was to flaunt the dexterity of their doctors as they reconstructed his face. Being Irish, they had more regard for him, and allowed him to request one item to be sent over to him from his home in Tipperary. Larry wished for his violin, which they agreed to acquire. The Germans demanded that Larry speak positively on the radio about his treatment as a prisoner of war. Larry understood what the German motive was, he knew he was being used as a propaganda puppet and refused to cooperate. This led to any associated privileges being revoked.

To celebrate his birth he composed a piece of music. This piece of music was played on the BBC, honouring Larry's talent on the violin and his title as POW 1.

After six long years of suffering, finally, the day of liberation came in 1945. Captive in the infamous Stalag Luft POW camp, Larry remembers the moment himself and the other prisoners were freed by Allied troops. Together they burst through the gates, free at last. Their starving bodies smelled meat from the distance, hoping for an abattoir or any food they eagerly ran towards the smell. Aghast, they ran into the centre of a concentration camp. The smell was not food, but the dead bodies of the Genocide victims. After experiencing this Larry was traumatised and said “he was never the same.”

Following the war due to Larry’s language skills, the Red Cross hired him to work as a translator in the Nuremberg Trials. Whilst in Germany he fell in love with a young lady from Belgium. They were set to marry but sadly the engagement ended when she suddenly died, at the age of twenty one. Larry was truly heartbroken. My grandmother has their love letters they wrote to each other. Written in French and German they are hard to interpret, except for one letter, Larry wrote in English “You are my biggest love in the world! I cannot forget you!” Reading and holding the crinkled creased letters was very moving for me, especially as I knew the tragic outcome. These love letters were written by two people that experienced and witnessed things I can barely comprehend, yet their love and hopes are timeless, just as if they were written today.

Years later he moved to London, and married. He worked for the British Civil Service and led their Orchestra and also played for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Larry and his wife had two children together. He faced huge misery throughout his life, yet this didn’t change his character as my grandmother tells me he was always kind and a true gentleman.

Mentally and physically the effects of the camp had an impact on his health, he sadly passed away in 1972 due to kidney damage. Nowadays Larry’s legacy lives on to inspire and help young people. The 'Larry Slattery Memorial Fund’ founded by Calton Younger, former POW and author of the famous book ‘Ireland’s Civil War,’ was created to help talented young musicians wishing to follow a career in music, whose financial circumstances make it impossible without any additional support.

BEGINNER

Semiconductors are materials which have an electrical conductivity somewhere between a conductor and an insulator. These elements are usually found in group 4 of the periodic table and the most commonly used is Silicon. Silicon is abundant in the Earth’s crust and is easily accessible from rocks, sand, and clay. The silicon chip was invented in 1961 by two American electrical engineers, Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce and since then the manufacture of silicon has moved on in leaps and bounds.

MODERATE

Silicon chips work using components such as transistors which, when invented, were about the size of the palm of your hand. Since then, engineers and physicists have worked tirelessly to ensure they could be made as small as possible to fit more transistors on a chip and have more computing power. The current size of transistors is about 100 times bigger than an atom (remember the last article) and this is what has made it possible for phones to do the amazing things they can do now. The newest iPhone has 128 GB and there are 2 transistors for each Byte. This means there are 256 Billion transistors in your iPhone that’s over 1.7 million times the number population of Kerry!

Moore’s Law (1965) predicted that the number of transistors in an IC chip would double every 2 years for the foreseeable future.

ADVANCED

Pure Silicon isn’t used in the chip components, a special process is done to pure Silicon called “doping”. Doping is the addition of impurities into the Silicon which are either electron acceptors or electron donors (those in group 3,5 of the periodic table) and these impurities will create extra charge carriers in the semiconductor. When an electron acceptor is used, for every electron that is taken from the Silicon it creates what is theoretically known as a “positive hole”. This is a space which should usually be filled by an electron (which is now bonded) and these positive holes enable electrical current to flow through the device in a new way, this is known as a P-Type semiconductor. Donor impurities act in a similar way to create an excessive number of electrons which create an electrical current themselves within an N-Type semiconductor. These N-Type and P-Type’s are combined together to create the little switches (transistors) that are even 1 – On or 0 – Off. Binary computer language (a string of 1’s and 0’s) is what computer code ultimately is and when anything is done on a computer, laptop, phone, smartwatch or any other electronics with a chip in it the chip is reading and relaying the data as 1’s and 0’s.

Féile Lughnasadh MilltownBack and Bigger!

Plans are at an advanced stage for Féile Lughnasadh 2023 in Milltowm, as the hugely popular mid-Kerry venue will soon announce the line-up for the free, family-friendly festival, taking place from the 3rd to the 6th of August. Save the dates and watch for media announcements for what is set to be a fantastic, internationnally- renowned programme of musicians. "We were very proud to host a performer of the calibre of Sharon Shannon in Milltown", said organiser Owen O'Shea, "it was a brilliant night, as was the festival. Milltown has hosted some major acts from The Chieftans to Kila to Michael O'Suilleabhán over recent years, and this year we intend maintain this high standard with another program of globally-renowned acts."

As well as the major acts, the festival will continue the parade and launch on Thursday, August 6th, followed by the ever-popular 'Singing Club'. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see the three headline acts, free and open air in the town square, while Sunday afternoon will feature the open-air céilí and fun events for families.

"This will be a brilliant occasion for music lovers, and will be 100% free to all", explained organiser Vincent Prendergast. "This will be the best event in the country this August weekend, it's the place to be", added Turlough O'Brien, local CCE chairman.

So keep the August weekend free and watch out for the 2023 acts to be announced soon for Féile Lughnasadh, a fantastic harvest of music and culture.

Castlegregory Active Retired / Care of the Aged are currently seeking to employ a chef / Cook or person experienced in cooking to assist in the delivery of a once weekly social dinner for seniors in the community. This is a part-time position and may require some hours to be worked over Monday and Tuesday each week. The position will involve meal planning, food preparation, cooking and plating the food for serving. The successful applicant will require to have good experience in cooking, be confident and capable of working on own initiative. Excellent rate per hour will be paid. - weeding and clean up activities, including wild planting (wildflower seeding) opposite Maunsel's garage

- work started on a biodiversity trailer. Design and planting by secondary school.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

This film had already attracted heaps of media attention before its release, due to the firing and subsequent rehiring of James Gunn, the creative mind behind the two previous Guardians films. Fall-outs of this kind between Marvel and their creatives are very uncommon, making this film seem like much less of a safe-bet leading up to its release. Thankfully, the threequel’s rocky journey to the screen only slightly impacted on the finished product, with the main trace being a messiness in the story. The narrative always seems to be either racing through the story, or stopping up to catch its breath. The film keeps throwing in new ideas until the very end, leaving many plotlines feeling under-developed.

Guardians of the Galaxy : Vol. 3 is the newest instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the third and final cinematic outing for the Guardians. The film sees our favourite band of misfits race across the galaxy to save the life of fellow-guardian Rocket Raccoon, all-the-

Conversely, the film’s depiction of the returning characters and tone are perfectly in-tune with previous franchise entries, making this feel like an organic continuation of those films. Similarly, the film’s humour flows very naturally overall, with there being at least one great laugh in each scene. The cast old and new seem perfectly in tune with Gunn’s writing sensibilities. They’re

capable of bringing the laughs and emotion in equal measure, and all seem dedicated to delivering a strong and meaningful last ride for the Guardians. The film’s greatest strength is its emotionally-minded tone. The first two acts hit a surprisingly melancholy and reflective note, which imbue the final battle with poignancy and heart. Most superhero films nowadays feel like hollow technology showcases, achieving a bare minimum of action and emotion (cough, Thor: Love and Thunder). Guardians 3 proves that superhero cinema can still deliver mature and emotionally-rewarding story-telling.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s messy script is vastly outweighed by its poignant tone and clear commitment from all involved. It closes the story out on a triumphant and resonant power-chord ; exactly what the Guardians and James Gunn deserve.

Southern French Fish Stew with Aioli

Method

For the aioli

Whisk lemon juice, garlic, egg yolk, and salt in bowl, place this over a pot of simmering water, whisk for about 5 minutes. Put a cloth on your worktop, place the bowl on top, slowly add the oil and continue to whisk. Once it has thickened, taste and adjust the season.

For the soup

Put a pot on over low to medium heat, add a little oil then the fennel seeds. After a minute or so add the cayenne pepper, onions and garlic. Let this cook for a few minutes before adding the leeks, tomatoes and bay leaf and saffron. Cook this slowly for another few minutes or so. Add the tomato and wine. Let the wine reduce by half. Add the stock and about 200ml of water. Simmer this for about 20 minutes. Add the fish and cook for about 4-6 minutes depending on the size of the fish.

There is so much flavour in this, it is very different from the rich creamy seafood chowder that we know so well. This has no cream but is thickened at the end with a little aioli. The flavours of fennel seeds, a little spice, some saffron and plenty of garlic mixed with some fresh fish make this a perfect dish to serve on a warm sunny day for lunch. Make plenty of the aioli (garlic mayonnaise) and spread it over some of the baguette. Hope you love it.

Ingredients

For the Aioli

1 lemon juiced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

2 egg yolk

olive oil

For the Soup

dash of oil

1 tsp. fennel seeds

½ cayenne pepper

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 leeks, white parts, washed and chopped

1 bay leaf

pinch of saffron

2 plum tomatoes, quartered, seeds removed and chopped

300ml white wine

900ml fish stock

800g. mixed white fish (use firmer fish like monkfish or cod)

handful of prawns, peeled and deveined

small bunch of flat leaf parsley

Keep back a little aioli for to spread on some crusty baguette slices. With the remaining aioli, whish a half of a ladle of the broth into the aioli. Return this to the pot and stir in for. Cook the broth for another minute or so. Divide between 4 bowls and serve with crusty baguette.

Celebrates Biodiversity Week

If you’ve been too lazy to cut the lawn yet then congratulations: you’re already doing your bit for nature! And for us..

It’s no exaggeration to say that man-made biodiversity loss is an existential crisis for all of us. As numbers of species plummet silently around us, the future ability of human-kind to peacefully survive is being put under severe strain. Two pieces of good news! Changes we make locally will benefit us locally, and most of our destructive habits are quite recent, and can be quite easily reversed if we want to!

The newly formed Corca Dhuibhne Community Forum plans to celebrate Biodiversity Week by waking up to what we can do locally. The Forum is supporting a number of local events, starting on Friday 19th of May, with a Biodiversity day in Gairdíní an Dísirt, the beautifully biodiverse gardens of An Diseart in Dingle. See the poster, attached.

Niamh Ni Dhúill will begin with a guided walk to help us to identify various species and you’ll learn about the Backyard Bioblitz, the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, and have an opportunity to pledge your garden or business to biodiversity.

Pledge a Hedge!

Hedges are the unsung heroes of biodiversity, and an area where we can easily make a difference. People often ask about the best time to plant a tree: the best time was 20 years ago, but the second best time is NOW! We will be launching a Hedge Meitheal for the coming year where we will gather together willing volunteers and those with land who can Pledge a Hedge. We will source free native hedging and learn from each other about hedge planting. Hedgerows make us more resilient to flooding, to wind, and are a haven for birds, wildlife and pollinating insects. They are also very pretty throughout the year – coming together to protect our future peninsula has a lot of upsides! If you have any bit of land that could support a bit of a hedge then come and get stuck in, it’s easy!

The committee and members of Hope Guatemala would like to thank all supporters and friends who donated and took part in the Raffle & Cake Sale at Féile na Bealtaine in Dick Mack’s Yard. We especially would like to thank Ronald and Finn Mac Donnell for their kindness and generosity in allowing us to use their premises and for the help of their staff on the day. Raffle cards were sold in shops and on line. Prizes were won locally, nationally, in Germany and Australia. Delicious cakes were baked and donated to Féile goers delight.

The funds we have raised will help to feed 50 children three times a day in the the Nutrition Centre CERNE in Chimaltenango, Guatemala as well as paying for a full time medic: Dr. Edwin Rojas.

Cromane GAA

PRIMARY GAME: Congrats to Edie Corkery, of Scoil Réalt na Mara, Cromane, who was part of the Primary Game team that played at half time during Sunday’s Munster final in Limerick. Well done, Edie.

SENIORS: The Cromane seniors, who have a 100% record in Division 4 of the county league, are at home in round 6 next Sunday. They welcome Tarbert to Cromane for a game with a 2pm throw-in. Let’s show the lads the support they deserve after such a positive start to the campaign.

MINORS: County Minor Central Region Division 2: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 2-8 Laune Rangers 2-17

The GGC minors, just a week out from the end of their county league campaign, played their first game in the Central Region competition last Monday in Killorglin. The team will also have games against Ballymac (to be scheduled) and An Ghaeltacht (last Monday evening, May 8).

The game against Laune Rangers was played at 13-a-side, and the team were dogged and competitive throughout.

UNDER-11s: Our Cromane under-11 team played their fourth series in the Go Games competition this Thursday evening in Cromane. They played against Ballydonoghue/Clounmacon last Thursday in Cromane. We had 30 children togged out in the maroon of Cromane. This game completed the first batch of Under-11 Go Games, with more games to come.

The motto of Go Games is that every player gets a go and it was great to see so many players involved from the two areas.

CUH: John Garvey and family, Filemore, presented a cheque to Cork University Hospital on April 23 for the grand sum of €15,340 being the proceeds from a dance held in Filemore Community Centre. John has been selling tickets for dances for many years and has sold them all over Kerry and beyond. He would like to thank all who supported him by buying tickets and donating to the CUH Charity.

Many thanks to all the bingo players that play Tuesday in Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant. From their bingo evenings €2,000 was raised and was presented to Cromane GAA Club yesterday evening in Jack's Coastguard Restaurant. Thanks also to Brian Keary, owner of Jack’s, for thinking of the club for the donation. At the cheque presentation were bingo players Sean Roche, Marion Mahony, and Liz Galvin, as well as Cromane GAA club chairman JP McCarthy, and Patrick Casey, club county board delegate. The club greatly appreciates this donation.

Camp Notes

Brigid O'Connor

MAY TRADITIONS A tradition of farmers shaking holy water in the fields, on the animals and on the crops to ward off evil was common in the old days on May ‘eve. This old custom may have died out in some areas but the tradition is still alive and well in some parts of rural Ireland.

Many families erect a May Altar in their home, this tradition still exists in our parish. Flowers are placed at the Altar and the rosary is recited.

CAMP DEFIB & CPR The Camp Defibrillator Committee would like to thank all the people that attended one of the three sessions of refresher training recently. It was a great evening, very informative and enjoyable. Our thanks to Leonard and his assistant Padraig , our wonderful instructors for the evening. Thirty six people attended in all. Many thanks for making the effort, it is much appreciated.

OBITUARY Tom Fitzgerald of Radharc na Catrac, Upper Camp and formerly of Ballyhale, Kilkenny & London, died peacefully on 25th April.

Tom will be dearly missed by all of his neighbours and many friends who met him on his walks or at the gateway of his home down through the years. Tom was a highly knowledgeable and interesting man and he loved meeting people and telling stories.

Tom was born and raised in Ballyhale in Kilkenny where his father John, who was a Camp man, was a member of the Garda Siochana. It was when Tom worked in London that he met his wife, Peggy O’Shea from Upper Camp. In later years Tom and Peggy returned to Camp where they lived happily for the rest of their days. As Fr. Mulvihill put it so eloquently, Tom had two great loves in his life, his wife Peggy and the Dingle Peninsula.

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill and Fr. Padraig Gleeson, a first cousin of Toms concelebrated the requiem mass at St.Mary's Church Camp on Friday followed by interment at Camp Cemetery. Everyone knew that Tom had a unique art and style of telling a story.

And Val Sweeney, in the final words of her poem and lovely tribute to Tom, which she recited at the end of Mass, summed it up perfectly, “ I’ll tell you one more and I’ll let you go” was how Tom put it, at the end of his many conversations with his neighbours on the roadside. We will always remember Tom with great fondness and respect for the lovely gentleman Tom was in life, may he now rest peacefully in his heavenly home. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. Sympathy is extended to his wife Peggy, brothers, Mike, Denis and Tadhg, sisters, Catherine and Brigid, nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grandnieces, sisters in law, relatives and many friends.

Joan Mulcahy, (née Hilliard) Lisnagree, Camp died peacefully at home on 2nd May, surrounded by her loving family and in the excellent care of the Palliative Care Team, Irish Cancer Society and The Home Help Team that looked after Joan so well. After the requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill, Joan's son.

Michael in a final tribute to his mother recalled many lovely memories of her life. The family and how much she cared for all of them, Joan was a great mother. She had a great business head too and her baking was very popular in the locality. Joan was so proud that the late former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey loved her baking, Joan used to say ‘Charlie wont eat any bread but mine’. Indeed Joan was a great character with a sharp wit and an interest in everybody and everything that was happening around her. Joan had a great presence about her too, Ní bheid a leithéid aris ann certainly rings true of Joan, a woman of her time, neighbourly and kind. Rest In Peace Joan.

RETIREMENT Family, friends and colleagues gathered at The Wetlands on Friday night to mark Séamus O' Hara's retirement from NEWKD. People from all sectors of the community and voluntary organisations were there to celebrate with Séamus and express their thanks for all his help and support over the past 30 years of sterling service to the communities of Kerry. NEWKD chose a tree, no doubt the perfect retirement gift for Seamus, a true environmentalist. The tree will take pride of place in the family’s native forest in their lands at Curra,Camp.

John Loughrey, colleague and friend handed over "this is your career" a red book, telling Seamus' story of an amazing journey from Belfast to Kerry helping communities to develop and grow! Congratulations, well done Seamus, enjoy the next chapter with your wife Mary and lovely family.

A QUEST FOR MEANING Dr. Breda O'Dwyer MTU gave a wonderful interview about her colleague and good friend the late Dr. Gearoid O'Donoghue on Horizons on Sunday morning. Breda talked about his book, A Quest for Life launched recently and available now in all good bookshops nationwide.

Congratulations to Breda and her colleague Brigid Crowley MTU and all of the people who helped complete this project. This is a book which Fr. Gearoid had written and had not managed to publish due to his untimely death in 2017. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. A Quest for Meaning is an excellent book, well worth a read..

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT Congratulations to the students of Mean Scoil Nua an Leith - Triuigh on being selected to showcase their environmental projects at the ECO YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALIST convention in Dublin. Well done to all and to their teacher Karen Blennerhassett. This is an amazing achievement, go n-eirí an t-ádh libh. The best of luck to you all.

KERRY CAMINO Over 250 walkers took part in the Kerry Camino walk on The Dingle Way over the Bank Holiday weekend. It is the 10th anniversary of the walk and everyone enjoyed the walk in beautiful sunshine and pristine conditions over the entire weekend.

RALLY OF THE LAKES Kenneth Quirke, Camp and New York sealed the Class 11R victory in

the Rally of The Lakes in Killarney on the Bank Holiday weekend. A childhood dream achieved for Kenneth, he says. Congratulations Kenneth, well done.

SOCCER Kerry Schoolboys/girls Soccer League Boys U12 Inter League - Semi-Final win.

U12s Kerry had a comprehensive win over Dublin North recently, now in National All Ireland vs Wicklow in 3 weeks time.

Well done to all the squad and management team on a brilliant display all over the pitch when they comprehensively beat the North Dublin District League on a 8-0 scoreline. All our boys played really well (unfortunately Conor Maguire was out injured) and they now look forward to the All Ireland Inter League Final in 3 weeks time against the Wicklow Boys League that looks set to be played in Kilkenny at Evergreen FC grounds. Our boys include Daniel O'Leary-Eanna Leahy-Cian Cronin-Conor Maguire-Eoin O'Driscoll-Michael Carmody and Nathan Anthony.

COMMUNITY GAMES Congratulations to the Annascaul U10 team who won bronze in the Community Games finals in Tralee last weekend. Third in the county is a great achievement.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Congratulations to Mary Fitzgerald, The Junction Bar, Camp on celebrating 90 years of age recently. A large crowd of family and friends joined in the celebrations at The Junction Bar on Saturday 29th April. Mary, may you continue to enjoy good health and happiness with your family and friends and may you continue to share those wonderful memories and stories with us, for many many more years to come!

Milo O'Brien, our well known local accordionist also celebrated a special birthday in the past few weeks in the Railway Tavern.

James is a well known and popular footballer with Annascaul Club and his mother Nora is an ardent supporter and follower of Annascaul and Kerry football, not forgetting that Nora is a proud Waterford woman, always supporting “the Deise” in hurling and football all down the years. Dingle Community Games

Dingle Community Games will take place in Dingle Sports Field Monday May 15th. Registration between 6.00pm – 6.20pm. First event starts at 6.30pm sharp. As we have a limited number of volunteers to run the event we would appreciate it if parents/guardians would stay with their child/children on the night. In order to cover the costs of the event we would really appreciate a €2 donation on the night. If you need any more information about the event or would like to register for one of the field events please contact Anna Corcoran on 086-3141336. Those who qualify in first and second place are eligible to take part in Castleisland on the 24th and 25th of June. If your child qualifies and you will not be able to attend please let us know immediately.
