Goats and Oats, Bridges and Fords –A Walk Through Annascaul History

Annascaul Historical Society invite you to join them on a guided walk on Bank Holiday Monday, the 5th of June.

We will walk east through the village passing the remains of the railway and the ballroom before proceeding along the Derrygorman Road. Here we will visit a forgotten mill, the site of a goat fair, a ringfort and the road to an old bog. We will then proceed through Coumduff, the birthplace of sculptor Jerome Connor. Returning via Annagap, we will explore the many river crossings, ancient and modern, arriving back to the South Pole Inn.

Registration will be at Hanafin’s Bar on Annascaul’s Main Street from 11.00 a.m, with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. The walk with its many information points should take about two hours.

Annascaul Historical Society would like to thank the many people who have generously joined us on our walks and contributed stories, poems and even songs!

The Faerie Tree and Matters of the Heart!

The Hawthorn Tree (an Sceach Gheal), a native Irish tree is brightening up the ditches and fields with its white blossoms around the country right now. It has been a part of Irish folklore for centuries and remains a special gathering place for the faeries that inhabit our countryside. If you dare to cut one of these trees down or harm it in anyway, it is thought that bad luck will follow. Irish folklore has many tales of woe from ancient times to more recent times of the unfortunate outcomes of messing with the “Faerie Tree”. In 1999, Irish folklorist and story-teller, Eddie Lenihan, warned Clare County Council that the “destruction of the fairy thorn bush or "sceach" at Latoon outside Newmarket-on-Fergus to facilitate the bypass plans could result in misfortune and in some cases death for those travelling the proposed new road”. His words were heeded and the sceach was saved, after the County Planners revised their plans. Whether you are a believer or a sceptic, take note that the wee folk who are intent on protecting these very special trees just might have our best interests at heart.

Hawthorn, historically used for kidney and bladder stones, as a diuretic, for digestive complaints and love sickness is now one of the most widely used heart tonic in Europe. The Hawthorn tree belonging to the Crataegus genus, is native of Europe, Northern America and Northern Asia. Its botanical name, Crataegus comes from the Greek word Kratos, meaning strength – most likely relating to its hard wood although our ancestors would liken it to strengthening the heart.

Hawthorn extracts are typically produced from the aerial parts of the plant –the leaves, flowers and berries with most clinical data supporting its cardiac benefits based upon studies of the dried flowering parts. Hawthorn’s leaves, berries, and flowers all contain substantial amounts of procyanidins and flavonoids, the substances that are most likely responsible for the plant’s medicinal properties. These are powerful antioxidants also found in blackberries, cherries, blueberries and red grapes. Well-established research into the medicinal properties of hawthorn and its effect on the heart is very promising and may contribute to a safe and effective treatment for cardiovascular problems down the line. With cardiovascular disease (CVD) one of the leading causes of death in Ireland, it is no wonder that the Faeries are adamant on protecting the hawthorn tree.

Young hawthorn leaves and blossoms are best harvested now in early Summer for making teas, tinctures and tonics. They are noted for a musky smell when cut fresh which disappears once dried. In pre-Christian times, the smell was considered an aphrodisiac, encouraging lusty courting in the fields and ditches across Ireland (which is also good for the heart). Once Christianity took hold, the smell was downgraded to that of a rotting corpse, and that put an end to that! Berries harvested in the Autumn and Winter are often used to make brandies, vinegars, syrups, jams and jellies. The long season between the first leaves, then the flowers and finally the berries ensures that we have a hearty supply of hawthorn for most of the year.

The cardiac benefits most noted in studies include improved coronary artery blood flow and improved blood flow to the extremities (circulation). Hawthorn has also shown positive effects in related conditions such as angina, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and some arrhythmias. It is believed

that phytochemicals in hawthorn may act directly on the heart muscle to increase the force of heartbeats and to relax the arteries around the heart. Hawthorn may also work indirectly by widening blood vessels resulting in lower blood pressure. In Germany, a standardised extract of hawthorn leaves and flowers has long been available on prescription for mild heart failure. Hawthorn extract is available in teas, tinctures, liquid extractions and capsules and is considered to be safe to use in doses ranging from 160mg - 900mg divided into 2 or 3 doses daily. While hawthorn is known for being excellent for the heart, it can interact with prescription medications taken for heart conditions. Medications for other heart concerns, arrhythmia, high blood pressure and male sexual dysfunction are also known to interact with hawthorn. Time for a disclaimer and to remind you that heart failure and heart disease are serious conditions that require medical supervision and intervention. If you are thinking of introducing hawthorn into your diet you should have a chat with your GP or pharmacist.

Before Western medicine became the norm, hawthorn was used as a medicine for well over two thousand years right across the globe. In ancient Greece, hawthorn was used to treat heart problems and chest pain. In Chinese medicine, it was used to improve the circulatory system and aid in digestion. Europeans have long used hawthorn as a general tonic, a diuretic and astringent. In the United States, doctors have been using hawthorn for circulatory and respiratory conditions since the 18th century. Before then, it was well-regarded in Native American medicine and is still used today, as a tea or tonic for longevity among the elders. Hawthorn continues to be widely studied and prescribed for its heart strengthening and protecting properties. As the demand for safe, effective alternatives for treating disease grows, increased scientific research is being carried out on many plant remedies of old. The standard of studies and recording of results is in itself a science, but without this kind of research the use of natural plant-based medicine would remain with the faeries, in folklore.

LARGE UPTAKE OF THE SUCKLER CARBON EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME:

There has been significant uptake in the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) which opened on 20 March 2023. As of the closing date of midnight on 22 May, there were over 20,000 SCEP applications submitted, which clearly demonstrates the level of interest suckler farmers have in improving the environmental and economic sustainability of the national beef herd.

The Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) is the replacement for the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP). SCEP opened on 20 March 2023 and closed at midnight on 22 May. Applicants can still apply up to 16 June albeit with a late application penalty. The payment rate is €225 per hectare on the first 15 hectares and €180 per hectare thereafter up to the maximum payable area (MPA). The MPA is calculated as the yearly reference number divided by 1.5. For example, a yearly reference number of 30 cows would have an MPA of 20 hectares meaning a payment of 15 hectares by €225 = (€3,375) plus 5 hectares by €180 = (€900) meaning a total SCEP payment of €4,275 assuming the beneficiary delivered all the requirements of the programme in full.

Applicants are reminded to:

1. ensure they calve down a minimum of 50% of the yearly reference number they applied for, between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023

2. ensure they are in the Bord Bia Sustainable Beef and Lamb Assurance Scheme (SBLAS) by 16 October 2023 at the very latest, and

3. ensure they submit their BISS application by midnight 29 May 2023

Failure to meet one or more of these three eligibility criteria will result in no payment and removal from SCEP.

BISS DEADLINE REMAINS THE SAME - TRANSFER OF ENTITLEMENTS EXTENDED:

Due to the fiasco that is the BISS system and the troubles ahead because of its flawed design and roll-out, DAFM advised farmers and Agricultural Advisors that the transfer of Payment Entitlement deadline is extended until midnight on 14 June 2023. This extension applies to the transfer of Payment Entitlements only. This is only right, as the system has not worked properly from the outset, and there has been many instances when the system was “down” due to necessary upgrades and updates and what-have-you!

The deadline for the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) and other area-based schemes applications unfortunately remains the same (ie 29th May 2023 at 11.59 pm). This hopefully will allow applicants sufficient time to get their applications in order. Advisors are working round the clock in order to meet this deadline, and all should be done in time. But that shouldn’t give the Department of Agriculture the ability to impose these extremely stressful deadlines, while they fiddle in their ivory tower.

Anyone who still needs to get their farm payment applications submitted should contact their local advisor immediately as the closing date is next Monday, and it can take two to three days to get a new client “Up On The System”.

Application under the new BISS system includer the following

• BISS

• ANC

• CRISS

• Eco-Scheme

• Straw Incorporation Measure

• Multi Species Sward Scheme

• Protein Aid Scheme

• Tillage Incentive Scheme

• Complimentary Income Support for Young Farmers

• Organic Scheme (Must have previously applied in November)

• ACRES (Must have previously applied in November)

So, as you can see, depending on your needs there is a lot to many of these applications. Do not be alrmed if you realise that you have not applied for all, as very few will qualify for many of these. The main ones of concern are the top four and ACRES.

Once a valid application has been submitted, farmers have until 22nd June to make any amendments, so all is not lost if you find additional land to include on your form after the closing date. However, Young Farmer/ New Entrant and National Reserve applications must all be completed by next Monday also.

BEST FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES: USEFUL TIPS:

Fast-growing vegetables can give you results quickly and simply. When some vegetables can take a long time to grow, you can easily get impatient. This is where you utilize quick-growing vegetables. If you are thinking of when to plant vegetables, planting speedy crops will give you harvests while you wait for other slower-growing crops. Also, by growing these fast-growing vegetable plants successionally it can mean a continuous supply of homegrown produce all through the season. The likes of micro-greens, salad leaves, and radishes can give you rapid results with crops in just a few weeks and many of the fastest-growing crops are simple to grow, even for a beginner gardener. I have grown all of these quick-growing vegetables in the kitchen gardens that I worked in during my time as a professional gardener. I found it very rewarding to sow the seeds, watch them grow, and then get a harvest in such a short period of time.

6 fast-growing vegetables to add to your veg plot. These fast-growing vegetables can all give you speedy results and are simple to grow at home. As well as for growing in beds, if you are looking for vegetable garden ideas, these crops are suitable for raised garden beds and many are even ideal for vegetable container gardens. Always follow the guidelines on seed packets and be aware that the speed of growth for all crops outdoors will be dependent on the time of year they are sown and the weather conditions.

Lettuce

Get a ready supply of salad ingredients by growing lettuce in your kitchen garden. Ready to harvest: 28-42 days. There are a lot of varieties of lettuce and they are one of the fastest-growing crops you can try. When growing lettuce, sow them successionally to have a consistent supply of fresh leaves. Sow seeds in situ where they are to grow and thin them to around five inches apart. Keep the soil moist to help prevent the lettuce bolting. You can grow cut-and-come-again lettuce that can give multiple quicker harvests and varieties that form heads – cut-and-come-again types are ready to harvest the quickest.

Kale

You can freeze any excess kale crops to use throughout the rest of the year. Ready to harvest: 30-60 days. Kale is a hardy brassica that comes in many colours and sizes and can be harvested quickly as baby leaves. Young kale is very tender and packed with all the nutrition that is found in fully-grown kale.

Growing kale is easy as it can be directly sown in the ground or raised indoors to be planted out earlier. It is a crop that can be harvested over a long period by picking the outside leaves each time. Young kale leaves are ready to be picked when they are the size of your palm.

Baby Beets

Baby beets are packed with nutrients and come in a wide range of colours. Ready to harvest: 50-70 days. Growing beets is simple and they have a long season, from early summer into late fall. There is a range of colours of beets to discover, including yellow and white as well as the usual purple varieties. Successionally sow beets every three weeks to have a continual crop. Sow directly into the soil and thin the roots to an inch apart. Baby beets are ready in around 50 days and should be picked when they are between an inch or two in diameter.

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
National
Reserve/New Entrant

Spinach

Spinach makes a great addition to a wide range of culinary dishes, so it's worth including it in your planting list. Ready to harvest: 50-70 days. Spinach is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and can be picked young to be eaten raw. To grow spinach, sow seeds around an inch apart and thin them out so plants are about spaced at 10 inches. Leaves can be picked as ‘baby’ leaves with scissors by cutting off at the stem and, by taking small harvests from each plant, the plant will continue producing new leaves.

Carrots

If you have young children, carrots are always a popular crop to grow in your garden. Ready to harvest: 50-80 days.

Smaller early varieties of carrots can be sown from early spring onwards and produce sweet and crunchy roots in under two months.

To grow carrots, sow the seeds thinly around two inches apart in a shallow trench in the soil and water well. Baby and globe-shaped carrots are the quickest to be ready for harvest, while early types such as ‘Early Nantes’ can be ready in around 70 days.

Spring Onions

Spring onions are packed with essential vitamins. Ready to harvest: 60 days. Scallions, also known as spring onions or bunching onions, are quick-growing alliums that are harvested for their slender white stalks. Direct sow seeds two inches apart in rows between 12 and 18 inches apart. When growing spring onions, water well and keep the soil moist as they grow. ‘White Lisbon’ is a classic type of onion to grow. Using the fastestgrowing crops offers many benefits and helps make sure any garden, even a small vegetable garden, can be productive throughout the season. Small and regular sowings of any of these fast-growing vegetables will mean a regular homegrown harvest with minimum fuss.

Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh: Young Environmentalist Awards

Congratulations to three groups of students from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory, who will represent their school at this year's Eco UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards, at The Convention Centre in Dublin on May 26.

Habitat Heroes, Petal Works and Eco Empire each had to create their own environmental project that would raise awareness and have a positive impact on the environment. They had to present their respective projects at various stages including at the semi-finals in Cork last March.

Habitat Heroes organised Beach cleans while also creating an initiative 'little and often' to encourage people to bring at least one piece of rubbish back from their beach walks. They also created a documentary called 'Ocean Eye' to create awareness about coastal conservation and they wrote a children's book in English and in Irish to connect with younger children on these pertinent issues. They have also lobbied local politicians and spoken out on Radio Kerry about coactal change. The Habitat Heros are, Patrick Harrington-Stack, Kyra Henderson-Sixsmith, Imogene Murphy, Zoe Costello, Carla Qualter and Emily Heasman.

Petal Works have been making paint pigment out of organic waste materials and are working on making their packaging more environmentally friendly by using renewable materials such as bamboo and hemp. This is an innovative and creative project, which really impressed the judges in Cork at the Semi-Finals! Petal Works are Rori Cremin and Calum Whelan.

Eco Empire have fundraised and organised a polytunnel for our school, created an outdoor classroom, constructed a pond for wildlife, planted an orchard of 12 apple trees as a garden of remembrance for our loved ones, organised a tree planting day for the community, grown potatoes and rhubarb organically for the school, connected with local community groups such as The Dingle Hub, local primary schools, Spar shop in Castlegregory, The Wetlands in Tralee to raise awareness about sustainable living and environmental conservation of the environment. They have created a booklet to inform people how to grow vegetables organically and they have been featured in a mini documentary about the school's Geo-Park and it's benefits for outdoor education.

All this inspiring work has been under the guidance of teacher Karen Blennerhassett who would like to thank The Dingle Hub, Ms Hazel Reidy Blennerhassett and Mr. James Greaney, Cathy Eastman of Forest Connections and Mr. Michael Kelly for their advice and support during the course of these projects.

These projects are a very healthy sign that our community is in safe hands with these inspiring, creative and motivated students. Best of luck to you all in the finals in Dublin

Dipping my Toe in

Is that a golden haired maiden? Or a philosopher king?

Out there, singing ‘Come on in - the water’s lovely!’ Against all evidence to the contrary. Well, I could give it a go Risk a watery grave Or seaweed socks

It could be worth it.

I’ll poke the murk with a toe. Because I never learnt to swim.

County Senior Football League: Division 1, Round 7

Milltown/Castlemaine 0-11Killarney Legion 0-11 Milltown/Castlemaine welcomed joint table toppers Killarney Legion to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown on Sunday afternoon for Round 7 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. The Killarney side came into the contest on the back of a comfortable victory last weekend against Castleisland Desmonds whilst the hosts travelled to Spa and took home a good win.

There was little to separate the sides throughout the contest and this showed on the scoreboard. Killarney Legion started the brighter and looked sharp with a lot of pressure applied high up the pitch and no shortage of possession. Chief marksman for the day, Ryan O'Grady kicked the opening two points of the encounter, one from a free and the other a long range effort off his crafty left boot. The visitors may regret not making more of their early dominance as gradually the hosts settled into the rhythm of the fixture. Eanna O'Connor knocked over our first point of the day on ten minutes after Sean Hogan was fouled. Ryan O'Grady quickly responded for Legion with a free to make it 0-3 to 0-1 but two quick fire points from play by Cathal Moriarty had the sides level at 0-3 apiece by the 16th minute. Both sides exchanged two more scores before half time with Finbarr Murphy and Eoghan O'Sullivan on target for Legion and Eanna O'Connor with Milltown/Castlemaine's replies to leave the teams level at 0-5 to 0-5 as the first half concluded.

The second half followed a similar vein to the first with Podge O'Connor and Jonathan O'Sullivan exchanging early points from play before Eanna O'Connor and Padraig Lucey did similar minutes later leaving it 0-7 apiece by the 40th minute. Ryan O'Grady then saw a goal chance fly over rather than under Cormac Leane's crossbar to put the away side back into the lead. It should also be mentioned that Cormac made two outstanding point blank stops as the half wore on to keep the match alive. Eanna O'Connor then landed a superb free from out near the sideline off his hands to draw the sides level once more at 0-8 to 0-8 but Ryan O'Grady again restored the table toppers advantage from a close range free. It was really nip and tuck and neither side, despite strong efforts from both teams, were able to pull away from each other. Jonathan O'Sullivan with a well executed point from play levelled the sides at 0-9 each before Cian Gammell with his scintillating pace fired over at the other end to edge Legion back in front as we headed for the closing stages. Up stepped substitute Kieran McKenna next to level the contest at 0-10 to 0-10

before a free from Eanna O'Connor which was converted as the clock ticked into injury time looked to have sealed what would have been a fantastic victory for Milltown/Castlemaine. Legion quickly funnelled down the field however and with 4 additional minutes played, a last gasp free from Ryan O'Grady after Will Shine was fouled outside the square ensured both sides took a share of the spoils as the match finished 0-11 to 0-11. On the balance of play it was probably the fairest result given how close the sides were all game.

County Senior Football League: Div 1, Rd 6 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-17 (23)Spa 1-13 (16)

A great result for our Senior 'A' side and management in Killarney on Saturday evening as we picked up a big victory in Round 6 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League against Spa.

We led 1-11 to 1-06 after a very commanding first half performance with the goal being well taken by Cathal Moriarty and some fine pointed efforts from Sean Hogan, Conor Spillane, Cillian Burke and Eanna O'Connor.

Spa opened the scoring early in the second half through an Evan Cronin pointed free and he exchanged scores with Eanna O'Connor moments later but that was as good as it got for the hosts for a period of time as Milltown/ Castlemaine took over again and scored four points on the spin to leave it 1-16 to 1-08 as we headed for the home straight. The hosts fought back as you'd expect and cut the gap back to five at 1-16 to 1-11 with five minutes remaining. Cometh the hour and cometh the man however as Eanna O'Connor hit the back of the Spa net on 56 minutes thanks to good build up play which saw Cillian Burke set him up... It brought O'Connor's overall tally for the evening to an incredible 1-11 and sealed the victory.

There were three more points before the final whistle went as Spa added two frees and Jerome Flynn rounded off a good evening's work for our lads to leave us with a seven-point victory at the end as we emerged victorious by 2-17 to 1-13. Well done lads, mighty stuff!

Acorn Life County U21 Football Championship

Well done to the Mid Kerry U21s especially our Milltown/Castlemaine representatives who were involved in a good victory last week against St. Kierans in Cordal.

They have now progressed to the Quarter-Final stage where they will come up against East Kerry.

Kerry Minors 2023

Congratulations to Milltown/Castlemaine's Dara Hogan who lined out full forward last week for the Kerry Minors in their 1-19 to 1-02 victory against Limerick in the Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship Semi-Final. Dara scored 1-3 in a top-notch performance.

Special mention to David Heasman who is a Coach & Selector with the team.

They will now take on Cork in the Munster Final

on Friday, June 2nd at 7:30pm in Austin Stack Park, Tralee. The match will also be shown live on TG4.

Condolences All involved in Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the family of the late Bridie Mangan née Knightly of Knockavota, Kilderry South, Milltown and formerly of Castlemaine.

Bridie played an active part in underage football for Milltown/Castlemaine GAA. Bridie was also a very efficient treasurer of Bord na nÓg. She was involved in the All-Ireland Féile competition when the club qualified to represent the county in 1994 in Ballina and the following year when the club hosted Ballina Stephenites in the same competition in 1995.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bridie's family and friends at this most difficult time.

Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Congratulations

Huge congratulations to our Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA Club contingent (6 in total) who were part of the Presentation Secondary School Milltown U15 side who won the Brendan O'Shea Cup title this week on a score of 5-18 to 2-11 against Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine of Kenmare. A great victory, well done lads!

Killorglin: June 2nd-5th

This June bank holiday weekend (June 2nd5th) the town of Killorglin, will once again be transformed into a major hub of culture and creativity as K-FEST celebrates its 10th year. The event has become known as one of Ireland’s most important festivals celebrating the work of emerging artists and musicians. This year’s programme will incorporate over 60 events, including workshops, music performances and craft markets, with numerous pop-up galleries, art installations and exhibitions taking place in disused buildings, empty shop-fronts and nontraditional arts spaces. The majority of events are open to the public and free to attend.

Special celebrations are underway as festival organisers’ prepare to welcome the 1000th emerging visual artist to exhibit in the town. Speaking at this year’s programme launch, the festival’s art director, Rochelle Lucey, explained how K-FEST has become a major platform for visual artists:

“After a decade of growth and evolution, K-FEST is on the verge of a remarkable milestone. Next month, the event will welcome its 1000th artist. K-FEST has become synonymous with celebrating emerging talent in Ireland. Visual artists converge on the town each June Bank holiday. There, they can exhibit, perform, and mingle with likeminded creatives. What started as a mission to reinvigorate the town's emptiness left by the recession has evolved into something much bigger. It's a truly immersive arts experience, appreciated by visitors and locals alike.”

Visual Arts

The work of 60 emerging artists has been selected out of more than 300 applications to form this year’s art programme. Their artwork will be displayed in pop-up galleries and installations across the town. Visitors can look forward to experiencing an array of visually stunning artwork.

The Peggy's Angels of Hope project will feature ten enormous 8ft angel sculptures, transformed into stunning works of art by local community organisations and businesses. The project was the brainchild of Nollaig Fahy and are named after his mother Peggy Kelliher from Callinafercy who recently passed at the age of 99. Nollaig stated:

“My family is delighted this project is happening in memory of my late mother. Peggy lived a full life for 99 years, and loved telling stories, sharing the craic agus ceol with friends and family. A proud Kerry woman, her enthusiasm for her town, community and Kerry GAA never ever dimmed. Ten angels painted by local participants will show what hope looks like.”

The local organisations taking part in the project by painting their angels are: St Marys

ofthe Angels, Killorglin Community College, Intermediate School Killorglin, Scoil Mhuire Killorglin, St Joseph’s Home, Fexco, Astellas, Family Resource Centre and K-FEST.

Visual artists this year include Cork-based, Pakistani-born artist Amna Walayat will have her work exhibited at the event. She is a former winner of the Arts Council of Ireland's Next Generation Award.

The self-taught artist Ronan Crowley from WestLimerick will showcase a series of surreal pen and ink drawings that are sure to impress. The multidisciplinary designer and visual artist, Úna Quill, hailing from Killarney, will bridge the gap between design and visual art through her work.

A collaboration with the music college BIMM sees Anie Valentine, Georgia G and Grooveline making the trip to perform at K-FEST. The festival will also host an array of local talent including E-Train, Jade O, Kate Dineen, Faux Mystic, Queenless Kings, PNJ, Colin Andrew and Simple Things.

Attendees can also look forward to viewing screen prints created by Clare Blackwel l, a talented Limerick-born artist and printmaker who has been commissioned to design this year's festival poster. Clara Planelles whose most recent film, "First Date," was funded by Film in Limerick and screened this year at the Irish Film London Festival will also be exhibiting.

Two special collaborations will take place at this year’s festival. Firstly, a partnership with Limerick School of Art and Design will see the work of ten of the college's undergraduates showcased.

Performing Arts

While K-FEST’s roots are in exhibiting visual artists, the festival also has an ever-expanding line-up of emerging music acts and drama/ spoken word events who are scheduled to perform in venues throughout the town. Festival Chair and music director Tim Clifford remarked:

“Alongside our visual arts programme we’re incredibly proud to be hosting a specially curated line-up featuring some of Ireland’s most important emerging musicians and performers. Both locals and visitors alike are encouraged to explore the vast exhibition spaces, gain inspiring insights from artists at fireside chats held in the town’s iconic pubs, enjoy poetry recitals or discover their new favourite punk rock band!”

Among the music acts attending this year’s festival in Killorglin are Cherym, the three-piece pop-rock outfit from Derry. They’ll be joined by the alt-rock and minimal post-punk-influenced band Grave Goods, Dublin artist Cruel Sister, Cork singer Alicia Olaniran and Limerick singersongwriter Abe Soare. The Dublin punk duo Vulpynes, Limerick band His Father's Voice, punk producer Meryl Streek, and Galway band Adore will also be playing. The Love Buzz who have just been confirmed for Glastonbury will also be performing, they'll be joined by Jason Deery, The Dream of Horses, Rita Lynn and Louis Cormack.

On the Friday night of the festival (June 2nd) the award-winning theatre and cabaret performer Xnthony will be hosting a 4-hour long “big gay ball” and on Saturday for younger musicians there will be open-mic sessions. The music is rounded off by the Let’s Glow Crazy and Funktion DJ sessions featuring George Feely and Kaycee along with local DJ’s.

Drama

The drama programme includes the showing of God’s Creatures starring Paul Mescal. There will be a Q&A with Killorglin’s Shane Crowley who wrote the film.

There is poetry and story sessions including London Calling and Story Slam amongst others. An interesting addition this year is an instalment called Filmore! Which is an audience participation event where you partake in an investigation and you find out the answers on Sunday night at a gig, there is limited tickets available for this.

A series of short animations titled Tan Ann: Portraits of Wild Wisdom fills out a busy drama schedule.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

Community employment position: Castlegregory Care of theAged/Active Retired are looking for a part time employee. This is a part time Community employment position. For further details of the position, please contact Margaret Maunsell, 087 9076256.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Whist Results: 19/05/2023 Ladies 1st: Maureen Dowling, 2nd: Mairéad NíDhubhda; Interval: Catherine Dowd, Nora Walsh; Gents: 1st: Thomas Maunsell, Mary Murphy; Interval: John McEnery, Mary McKenna; Mystery: Maeve Deane.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Drink Can Rings, Old Spectacles & Used Postage Stamps: Many thanks to all who are continuing to collect.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Easy Pasta with Sausage and Ricotta

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

Add in the tomatoes and chili flakes. Cook this for a few minutes to allow it to thicken. Add in the reserved pasta water. Add in the pasta, mozzarella and ricotta, use a large spoon or spatula to mix this all well. Taste and season if needed (remember the cheese will have some salt).

Sprinkle parmesan over the top and place in the oven for about 15-20 minutes.

Once ready remove from the oven and wait for about 5 minutes before serving. Serve with a green salad or garlic bread.

Here is a simple dinner recipe, perfect for a lazy evening. It is full of flavour and will be a definitive crowd favourite. I always love dishes like this that get mixed together and added to a tray and then popped in the oven. One little tip that works great for any baked pasta dish, is to cook the pasta in boiling salted water for about 5 minutes. This always helps the pasta to be just right when it comes out of the oven. Serve with a green salad.

Serves 4

Ingredients

300g sausages, each cut into 3 pieces

2 garlic cloves, crushed

½ tsp. fennel seeds

1 tsp. oregano (optional)

2 tins of crushed tomatoes

pinch of chili flakes

350g pasta (use shapes like penne, farfalle, or rigatoni)

200g mozzarella, torn in pieces

150g ricotta

50-100g parmesan

olive oil

salt and pepper

Method

Preheat the oven to 190ºC

Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water for 5 minutes. Strain and keep about a ladle of the pasta water.

While the pasta is cooking you can start the rest of the dish.

Put an oven-proof pan on over a medium to high heat (if you don’t have an ovenproof pan you can transfer it to an ovenproof dish before putting in the oven).

Add a little oil and add the sausages. Cook them for about 5 minutes to allow them to brown a little. Turn the heat down and add the garlic, fennel seeds and oregano. Cook this for about 2-3 minutes.

News from Dingle Hub

“Pedal for a Medal” at Castlegregory National School

On Thursday and Friday, as part of Bike week, Castlegregory National school children and parents cycled to school. The event was parents led, supported by Dingle Hub and Kerry County Council. The turnout was hugely encouraging. Half of the school took part. Kerry County Council’s Active Travel Manager Cora Carrigg joined in, offering information and advice to parents and teachers.

At the end of term children who have joined in each week will receive a medal for their efforts. Much of the learnings from those taking part will be documented by the Hub’s Hazel Blennerhassett and added to our Sustainable Mobility Pathfinder project findings. It is a very proactive and positive initiative for parents to take on. The hope is that we can support other schools to take part next year with the benefit of the learnings from Castlegregory.

Dingle Heart Safe Campaign – Community Defibrillator Audit

SHU in Dingle, in association with the Sacred Heart University College of Health Professions and the In a Heartbeat organisation, is launching a Heart Safe campaign on the Dingle Peninsula. This campaign will provide eight new defibrillators to the peninsula, in addition to providing training in CPR and defibrillator use.

Mike Papale, the founder of In a Heartbeat, will be launching the campaign alongside Dr Maura Iverson, Dean of Health Sciences at Sacred Heart University at 11 am on the 7th of June at An Díseart, Dingle. The launch will include a demonstration of CPR and defibrillator use, followed by a walk in celebration of heart health. There will be lots of fun and goodies, with all ages welcome!

As part of this campaign, SHU in Dingle will be leading an initiative to audit all existing defibrillators in the area. If you are responsible for, aware of, and/or in possession of a defibrillator on the Dingle Peninsula, please email the following information to Dr Grace Flannery, Program Co-Director of SHU in Dingle, at flanneryg@sacredheart.edu

• Make & Model of Defibrillator

• Location, and internal or external positioning

• Make & Model of housing unit

• If the unit is registered or being registered with the national ambulance service

for facilitating the various events last weekend. DEFIBRILLATOR DAMAGE. Some damage was recently caused to the exterior case of the Defibrulator Unit in Holyground which if left undetected would have left the unit unfit for use in case of emergency. We ask our readers to stop anybody meddling with the unit and report any incidents to the Gardai to ensure this vital first response system is available at all times but especially when most needed.

We hope to have full details in our next edition of Training Sessions for the proper and prompt use of a number of new Defibrillator Units being donated to our town. Our readers are invited to submit suggestions on suitable locations for the positioning of the new units to the West Kerry Live office before the launch in early June. TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings have recommenced on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m.. Everybody welcome and we will start with litter collection and planting if the Mail Road beds are ready after the recent roadworks there. We appeal to the Residents Associations in the housing estates to also get started on weed growth and planting as all estates are visited by the Tidy Towns Judges during their annual trip. Bígí Linn!! Míle Buíochas.

PUBLIC REALM. This is the last call for our readers suggestions on a suitable name or title for the new Public Realm in Strand Street. We have received some very suitable titles which encompass the history of the site and surrounding area but the Business Chamber would like to broaden the list before submitting your suggestions to Kerry County Council who

have the final say on the matter.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan

A beautiful old story tells of how Jesus, after his Ascension into Heaven, was surrounded by the Holy Angels who began to enquire about his work on earth. Jesus told them about his birth, life, preaching, death, and Resurrection, and how he had accomplished the salvation of the world. The Archangel Gabriel asked, “Well, now that you are back in Heaven, who will continue your work on earth?” Jesus said, “While I was on earth, I gathered a group of people around me who believed in me and loved me. They will continue to spread the Gospel and carry on the work of the Church.” Gabriel was perplexed. “You mean Peter, who denied you thrice and all the rest who ran away when you were crucified? You mean to tell us that you left them to carry on your work? And what will you do if this plan doesn’t work? What’s your Plan B?” Jesus said, “I have no other plan — it must work.” — Truly, Jesus has no other plan than to depend on the efforts of his followers!

This time of year, students are preparing for their Leaving Certificate Exam. A note in a yearbook went as follows: You will go far if you know where you are going. Once we have a goal in mind and a sense of mission things become possible. It is good to have a focus. As they face the future there will be change. Change to college or work or travel. Change to more independence. As they prepare for their exams and for whatever the future holds, I wish them well and Gods blessings.

As Christians our mission is to go out to the whole world and tell of the greatness of God. By our lives, by what we say and do and by who we are.

For the disciples in the gospel of the Ascension, (Mt 28:16-20) there was going to be change. Jesus was leaving them. He gave them a promise and he gives to each of us a promise. I will be with you always until the end of time. Our prayer today is that we will always know the presence of God in our lives. While other aspects may change, that promise remains. I am with you always until the end of time.

Comhghairdeas to the children of the local primary schools that received their First Holy Communion in recent weeks. Thanks to the parents, guardians, grandparents, teachers and all who pass on the faith. The journey of faith continues, we are nourished by God in many ways, through nature, through other people and through scripture. It is at Mass and in the celebration of the Sacraments that Jesus is truly present to nourish us as we seek to live as he taught us to.

Bhí idir ríméad agus díomá ar lucht tacaíochta na Ríochta le coicíos anuas.

Bhí sé le tuar go mbainfeadh an fhoireann bua i gcluiche luath nó mall. Bhí a gcumas ar taispeáint go soiléir le tamall, agus tharla go raibh idir scil agus áth acu as baile in aghaidh Bhaile Átha Luain, nuair a d'éirigh leis an bhfoireann baile teacht aniar tar éis dóibh bheith dhá chúl le fána. Cúl den scoth ó Ryan Kelliher tar éis ceathrú uaire, agus sraonadh ó chosantóir a chuir buille Nathan Gleeson as compás an chúlbáire don dara ceann.

Fiche nóiméad roimh deireadh na coimhlinte, chuir Kelliher an liathróid i dtreo an eangaigh agus an cúlbáire as an láthair. Cheap go leor go raibh cosaint ar líne an chúil déanta ag Aaron McBride Átha Luain, ach bhí radharc mhaith ag an Réiteoir Cúnta, Conor Fitzgibbon, ar an eachtra agus rialaigh seisean gur chúl bailí a bhí ann.

B'shin cúl an bhua, an chéad chluiche bhuacach ag na Ciarraígh ó thosaíodar sa Sraith Naisiúnta. Ma b'fhada le roinnt den lucht tacaíochta ag teacht é, ní miste a mheabhrú arís nach fás aon oiche club peile ar bith, agus tá taithi na mblianta ag clubanna (agus baimisteoirí) eile ar an méid atá le déanamh mar ullmhú chun cluichí a bhuachaint go rialta.

Ach nuair atá an beart déanta uair amháin agat, tá a fhios agat gur féidir é dhéanamh arís. Ní fál go haer é a thuilleadh.

Mar sin féin, níor éirigh leis an bhfoireann baile an ceann is fearr d'fháil ar Fhánaithe Bhré an tseachtain dar gcionn. Arís, bhí smuta den ádh ar na cuairteoirí sa mhéid go raibh an Réiteoir, Kevin O'Sullivan, sách éasca ar chailísí i dtús an chluiche, ach ainneoin sin agus tús spleodrach leis an imirt nuair a chuaigh Bré gar do chúl gan ach 15 soicind caite ar an gclog, bhí an dá thaobh nach mór cothrom as sin go dtí an sos, agus Ciarraí ag brú go láidir sna nóiméid deireanacha roimh fhead an leath ama.

Sa dara leath, áfach, bhain na Fánaithe cúl luath amach, agus leath-slí tríd an chuid sin den chluiche dob fhéidir cic píonóis a bhronnadh ar fhoireann na Ríochta nuair a rinne captaen Bhré, Dave Webster, cailís soiléir ar Nathan Gleeson – ach níor ghéill an Réiteoir d'éileamh imreoirí Chiarraí.

A mhalairt de scéal a bhí ann ag druidim le deireadh an chluiche, nuair a bhuail an liathróid láimh Kelliher, agus chomharthaigh an Súilleabhánach láithreach don chic éirice.

Bíonn meascán d'ádh agus de mhí-ádh an-choitianta sna cluichí páirce, is cuma cé acu caid, rugbaí nó peil – nó aon chineál eile – atá i gceist!

Léargas an Lae

Louise Nic an tSionnaigh le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne, Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar

rabhas ann ach trí lá. Séasúr na Nollag a bhí ann, agus bhí foireann an chláir ag dul i gcomhair lón na Nollag. Choimeádas mo cheann síos, agus leanas ar aghaidh le mo chuid oibre, agus iadsan ar fad – cúntóirí, taighdeoirí, léiritheoirí – ar fad ag siúl amach, ag cur a gcótaí orthu, sceitmíní orthu, agus an bhialann a bhí curtha in áirithe á plé acu. Ní rabhas ag tnúth le cuireadh – ní rabhas ann ach go sealadach, agus bhí níos mó taithí agam ar an áit faoin dtráth seo, so ní rabhas maslaithe.

Stop an duine deireanach a bhí ag fágaint, agus sheas sé os mo chomhair. D’fhéach sé orm. “Louise, seo leat,” a dúirt sé. Bhaineadh saghas geit asam, chun an fhírinne a rá – go raibh duine ón bhfoireann ag caint liom, agus ní fé chúrsaí oibre. D’ardaíos mo cheann ón scáileáin, agus bhí Ryan ann. “Abair?” a dúras. “Lón na Nollag,” arsa seisean. “Téanam ort.” “Ó no Ryan –go raibh míle maith agat, ach nílim mar chuid den fhoireann.” “An bhfuil tusa ag obair ar an gclár inniú?” “Táim,” a d’fhreagraíos. “Bhuel, mar sin, tusa mar chuid den fhoireann. Anois, cuir ort do chóta agus dein deabhadh!”

Tá deireadh tagtha le ré thathagach – is ea “Fear na mBréagán,” nó an “Toyman,” mar a ghlaoann leanaí ar Ryan Tubridy. Níl sé imithe go huile is go hiomlán - ón scáileán amháin- agus cinneadh mór tógtha aige an “Late Late Show” a fhágaint. Tá daoine ag déanamh breithiúnais ar an gceann feadhna nua cheana féin, fé mar a dhéanann – agus é gan a bheith tosnaithe! Agus amhlaidh mar a bhí le Ryan Tubridy roimhe, agus le linn a aga ar fad ar thús cadhnaíochta.

Sin cuid de nádúr an duine is dócha; breithiúnas a thabhairt – fiú gan an t-eolas ar fad a bheith acu go rialta. Smaoinigh ar ábhar ina bhfuil ana shuim agatsa féin ann, nó ana thaithí agat air. Dá léifeá alt fén ábhar sin, chífeá pé botún a mbeadh ann, nó eolas mícheart, agus seans go mbeadh tuairim láidir agat fé – níos láidre ná mar a bheadh agat ar ábhair eile. So, cén fáth, nuair a chífimid duine sna meáin nó duine a bhíonn os comhair an phobail in earnáil éigin, go ndéanaimid breithiúnas orthu chomh tapaidh san? Níl an t-eolas fúthú ar fad againn – faoina saol nó a bpearsantacht. Ach is rud nádúrtha é. Agus níl éinne againne nó acusan gan cháim, gan amhras. Deineann daoine botúin, ní bhíonn roinnt oiriúnach don bpost ina bhfuil siad, imrítear feall corruair – ach níl duine amháin inár measc atá mar aingeal. Ní briathra a dhearbhaíonn ach gníomh, áfach, agus tá scéal amháin faoi Ryan Tubridy a roinnfidh mé leat, ón dtréimhse go rabhas ag obair in R.T.É.

Is áit thaitneamhach í R.T.É. le bheith fostaithe ann (bhuel – sin mo chuimhne, ar aon chuma, ach admhaím gur thugas íde na muc is na madraí don áit go minic d’éinne a bhí sásta cluas a thabhairt dom – nó nach raibh in ann éalú! B’fhéidir sin cuid den nádúr chomh maith – nó b’fhéidir gur cancrán is ea mé. Ahem). Go h-áirithe an rannóg raidió; bhí daoine álainne ann, agus “Buzz” san atmaisféar. Coinníollacha maithe den gcuid is mó, chomh maith. Ag an am céanna, bhí meon ait a shníomh isteach diaidh ar ndiaidh i ngan fhios don nduine féin fiú – gan a bheith fáiltiúil nó cairdiúil go dhaoine nua, go dtí go rabhadar ann tamall. Ní raibh cách mar sin, gan dabht, ach slua maith; muna raibh duine ann go fadthéarmach (agus bhí ana chuid daoine nach raibh; bhíodh raidhse aigheadheanna ag teacht agus ag imeacht de shíor), is dócha nach raibh daoine sásta a gcuid fuinnimh nó ama a chaitheamh agus a “chur amú” ag cur aithne orthu. Ní meon ródheas é sin, ach thuigfeá é ar shlí. Mar shampla, bhíos ann cúpla lá – díreach nua-thosnaithe, agus is cuimhin liom gur thóg cailín mála misleáin amach as tarraiceán. Leagan amach oscailte a bhí ar an oifig, i gcearnóga beaga, agus bhí ceathrar againn suite ana chóngarach lena chéile. Thairg an chailín sin misleán don nduine trasna uaim agus don nduine os mo chomhair, ach ní domsa. Bhíos leath-gortaithe agus bhí leath fonn gáire orm. Gheallas dom féin nach mbeinn riamh mar sin – agus tabhair buille faoi thuairim cad a thit amach? Cúpla bliain dár gcionn, bhíos ag siúl síos an pasáiste, ag beannú na ndaoine go raibh aithne agam orthu… agus ag tabhairt neamh-airde ar na stráinséirí. Is cuimhin liom go soiléir an nóiméad a thuigeas cad a bhí á dhéanamh agam. Bhíos ana chrosta liom féin gur ligeas dom féin titim isteach in iomaire míshibhialta a bhí rómhartha cheana, agus gan mo cheannsa féin a chruthú.

Ach táim imithe ar strae – seo alt faoi Ryan Tubridy, ach léiríonn an scéal sin cé chomh héasca is atá sé luí isteach sa nós sin, agus cé chomh suntasach is atá sé nuair nach ndéanann duine.

Bhíos ag obair ar chlár nua (domsa) lá amháin, mar bhí duine eile breoite. Ní

Seo an “talent,” ag caitheamh liom i slí dhaonna, fhlaithiúil, chineálta, nuair nach ndearna éinne eile é - fiú i ngan fhios dóibh féin - cúpla neomat roimh ré. D’fhéadfadh sé siúl tharam agus ní dhéanfadh sé difríocht dá laghad domsa. Ach NÍOR shiúl sé tharam – agus rinne sé sin difríocht ollmhór. Gan dabht thar na bliana agus mise ag obair leis, rinne nó dúirt sé rudaí eile anseo is ansiúd nach raibh chomh deas – ach mar sin a bhímid go léir. Bhí éifeacht doimhin ag an ngníomh beag (agus mór) sin orm, agus ní dhéanfaidh mé dearmad air go deo.

Go n-éirí leis an gcéad caibidil eile don bhfear múinte muinteartha sin.

SENIORS: County League Division 4 (round 7): Cromane 1-11 SneemDerrynane 2-13

The Cromane seniors travelled to Derrynane on Sunday for round 7 of Division 4 in the county league. They lost their unbeaten record in the division to a determined Sneem-Derrynane side who were deserving winners.

Cromane started well and after 23 minutes they led by 1-7 to 0-4. Cromane’s goal arrived in the 21st minute when Mikey Houlihan shot low in the bottom corner. Before that Cromane had added points from wing-backs Cian Lyons and Liam O’Neill as well as two from Danny O’Shea.

However, after this bright opening spell for the visitors the home side took over hitting 1-3 without reply to go in level at the break (1-7 apiece). Their goal came in the 25th minute when Ian Galvin pounced on a defensive mix-up to net.

The second half belonged to Sneem-Derrynane as they kept Cromane at arm’s length with a series of long-range scores from former Kerry senior Ronan Hussey.

At the other end, Cromane kept in touch through frees from Darren Houlihan and a point from Tony Duffy but the home side looked the more comfortable outfit as they were desperate to finally get a win at the seventh time of asking in the division.

Entering time added on there was still just two points between the sides (1-11 to 1-13).

However, the home side wrapped up the points with an injury-time goal, again from Ian Galvin who punched home from close range.

Cromane scorers: Darren Houlihan 0-6 (0-5 frees), Mikey Houlihan 1-0, Danny O’Shea 0-2, Cian Lyons, Liam O’Neill, and Tony Duffy 0-1 each.

Team: Darragh Crosby; Shane Ahern, Ethan Griffin, Brice Dourieu; Cian Lyons, Eanna Healy, Liam O’Neill; Darren Houlihan, Sean Teahan; Tony Duffy, Sean O’Sullivan, Darragh McKeefry; Jason O’Connor, Danny O’Shea, Mikey Houlihan. Subs: Finbar Casey, James Hurley, Liam Joy, Aidan O’Sullivan, Danny Healy.

UNDER-15s: County League Division 8 final: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 5-12 Dingle 5-8

The GGC under-15s were worthy winners of the County League Division 8 title when they proved to be too strong for Dingle last Wednesday evening in Tralee.

The game (13-a-side) was played in the MTU Tralee pitch and GGC led by 3-8 to 3-3 at the break. Dingle battled hard throughout but the GGC side stood strong to clinch a worthy title.

Well done to the team for claiming a county title and well done to all of their coaches who volunteer their time each week.

Team: Daragh O’Connor; Evan Keary, Eddie O’Sullivan, Cian Poff, Aidan Sheehan, Diego Andreatta; Giovanni McCarthy, Paddy O’Sullivan; Sam Kelly, Oran Sheahan, Cathal Clifford, Sean Doherty, Ben O’Shea. Subs:

Daniel Malone, Daniel Teahan, Martin Zadojenko, Dara O'Connor, DJ Poff, Diarmuid Riordan, Tadhg O'Sullivan.

SKILLS: Well done to Daragh O’Connor, Scoil Realt Na Mara, and a member of Cromane GAA Club, who took part in the individual competition of the county primary schools skills competition in Austin Stack Park, Tralee, last Thursday evening.

UNDER-13s: The GGC under-13s continued the second phase of the county league on Sunday last.

GGC have again entered two teams that compete at Division 3A and Division 15A level respectively. Last Sunday both sides played against their Milltown-Castlemaine counterparts. Both sides were defeated in what were their first losses in phase two.

The Division 3A team had opened their phase two campaign in Listry against Keel-Listry. After a mighty tussle they emerged winners on a scoreline of 5-7 to 3-10.

The Division 3A side will have another game against St Senans this Sunday.

The GGC team that competes in Division 15A also opened their campaign in Listry against Keel-Listry B with a win the previous weekend. They ensured a double for GGC with a 3-9 to 1-11 win.

The Division 15A side played their third game against Ballymac B on Tuesday evening last (May 23) in Cromane.

UNDER-11s: The Cromane under-11s begin phase 2 of their County Go Games this Thursday evening (May 25).

They will play in the Mike Breen/Paudie Clifford group (all groups are named after Kerry footballers) against Beaufort, Castleisland Desmonds, Glenflesk, and Scartaglin.

WELCOME HOME

Hugh O'Donnell, Ontario, Canada was delighted to meet all his cousins in Camp on Thursday night. Gleann na nGealt is Hugh's ancestral home and the birthplace of his Grand Uncle, the late Thomas O’Donnell, former Archbishop of Halifax, Ontario.

The archbishop left Gleann na nGealt when he was just 8 years old with his parents to discover a new world in Canada. He returned once when he was a young priest, to visit his cousin Ellie O'Donnell in the valley where he was born. A neighbour of his, the late Tom Batt recalled meeting him on the road on that occasion and was always very proud to share the story with everybody.

The archbishop's mother was Johanna Daly from Tonevane. Hugh is very proud of his Irish heritage and his connection to Camp and West Kerry.

It was great to see him again and Eibhlin, genealogist and researcher who has left no stone unturned, tracing all the lineage of the O'Donnell and Daly clan in the Dingle Peninsula. Safe journey home, Hugh and hope to see you again soon.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS. Michael Collins, Curaheen got the surprise of his life when he arrived in his local, Fitzgerald's Bar on Friday night. All his family and many good friends were there to greet him and wish him well on his 90th birthday. Among them was Mary Fitzgerald who celebrated her 90th on 26th April last. There was great entertainment too with Curraheen Church Choir giving a wonderful performance to end a lovely evening. Congratulations Michael, wishing you all the best in the years ahead.

Congratulations to Jack Downs, New Jersey and Gleann na nGealt who celebrated his 90th birthday recently in New Jersey with his wife Ann and all of his family and friends.

Jack, we all wish you well and hope that you will visit your Camp home again in the not too distant future.

May all our nonagenarians continue to enjoy good health into the future. Go maire sibh an chéad.

News from "The Shed"

Mícheál O'Connor

The Tom Crean Naomhóg project ended with a dash of of Holy Water and a splash of Atlantic, Sunday 21st of May, as the noble craft was launched in the Dingle Marina. The Tom Crean name was chosen because this man's remarkable achievements, courage and endurance on the high seas still continue to inspire all who follow in his wake. Shed chairman, Mike Fitzgerald praised all involved in the building of the boat, especially craftsman, Eddy Hutchison and sponsor Liam O Neill, artist. A special thank you to Aileen, Jill, Enda and Hugh, Tom Crean's decendants who attended and launched the craft.

The Men's Shed is where men come together to share skills and undertake projects possibly but always to make friends and to provide support. As Summer days lengthen with the promise of sunshine, hazy lazy days and flowers we notice the bees pass on musical wing. This has awakened us to the possibility of keeping a beehive at the Shed. Beekeeping began possibly in Egypt 5000 years ago and St Modomnoc is credited with bringing bees to Ireland from Wales around the time of St.Patrick. We are excited to think we might write a chapter of this noble art for ourselves at Ballintaggart. Ireland has always had a reputation as a land of milk and honey !

Allow me to invite men of 18 years and over to come to the Shed to share your and our skills and knowledge. Even if there are no tangible benefits we guarantee friendship and fun. See you there !

It’s All In The Mind

I think therefore I am…not

Back in the 17th century, Descartes most famous dictum ‘I think therefore I am’ set in motion a fundamental misrepresentation of what it means to be human, which endures to this day i.e that the mind and body are separate entities.

Without getting caught up in the philosophical and historical subtleties and interpretations, suffice it to say that this false and for three centuries, largely unchallenged premise has dominated western understanding of human nature.

It has spearheaded a paradigm that over evaluates intellectual achievement and rewards thought based endeavour while undermining the intelligence of the body. Think of young children who are naturally in touch with their bodies- they are relaxed, loose and free. They are bodies but as we get older we think we have bodies: adults tend to identify with their minds. As we grow, we move further and further away from the aliveness of the body and the freedom of the present moment only to get caught up in the thinking mind, trapped in the future or the past. As a result of this disconnect between mind, body and spirit, we often struggle to achieve a sense of balance and cohesion in our lives, carrying around a vague sense of unease and dissatisfaction.

In his short story ‘ A Painful Case’ Joyce introduces the character Mr Duffy as a man ‘ who lives a little distance from his body’. This nicely describes how so many of us live our lives. We live in our heads, often lost in thought and treat the body as the workhorse who does our bidding - it carries the burden of the wants and needs of the ego : the workhorse must be stronger, thinner, younger; the workhorse must work harder, be better and help me fulfil my needs. It never occurs to us that the body might be more intelligent than the conscious ego.

The fact that modern western medicine has one set of practitioners for ‘mental disorders’ and an entirely separate set of professionals for all other types of ‘physical’ complaints reflects the misplaced reliance that still exists today on the dualistic model of mind and body. While scientific research progresses at the speed of light it seems incredible that this model has not been updated. There is an urgent need for a more holistic approach to health care. Instead of striving ever forward maybe we can borrow some wisdom from the past. The words meditation and medicine come from the same indo-European root ‘to measure’, their meaning aligned: to restore balance- inner and outer so that the heart, mind and body can be held in a seamless whole, thereby returning to full health ( the word health derives from the Old English ‘whole’- a thing complete in itself.

So while the capacity of the Homo Sapien brain has evolved to include the miracle of language, imagination, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, we must not forget how the body’s intelligence keeps us alive - it manages to breathe for us, keep our heart beating, detox the bloodstream; signals when we need to eat and sleep and move; our autonomic nervous system alerts us to danger, communicates with other beings at a cellular level, processes grief and trauma and so much more - all without our conscious help. In fact when the conscious mind

intervenes unnecessarily it often disrupts the process and causes havoc with the natural functioning and healing of the mind/body.

We need to be aware of what is going on in the body in order to know how we are feeling. When we are attuned to the body, we are more balanced and grounded, better able to cope with the demands and stressors of living. When we get stuck in the thinking mind, we are often at sea, caught in a cycle of obsessive thought - self-critical, worrying, ruminating, judging: all of which reinforces fear and leads us astray - down paths of self-delusion, doubt and alienation. We lose sight of who we are, and where we belong. When we are disconnected from ourselves it stands to reason that we become disconnected from the world around us ; we are cut off from empathy and compassion: from the present moment. The individual, society at large and the environment pay a high price for this misalignment of body and mind.

If you can imagine yourself to be a finely tuned musical instrument playing in a symphony orchestra - in harmony, attuned to the other musicians, not thinking about the last note or the next, in flow, an indistinguishable part of the whole, producing sublime music. Now imagine if all the instruments are out of tune, every discordant note in conflict with its neighbour, jarring, bumping up against each other- what a cacophony of sound that would produce! - much like the world we live in today.

So, to continue the metaphor, we need to tune our instruments. By listening to the body and regulating our nervous system , becoming more attuned to our own needs and thereby more compassionate to the needs of others, instead of a world driven by greed, hatred and delusion we can work towards a more balanced, peaceful and healthy world.

The practice and cultivation of mindfulness can help to guide and support us in this endeavour. When we pause and are still we allow our thoughts to loosen their hold on us and we can tap into the body’s inherent wisdom, reconnecting with ourselves and the world we inhabit.

Duibhneach a dhein Seán an Chóta, níor clóbualadh riamh é ach tá sé ar fáil ar an ríomhaire fé www.forasnagaeilge.ie. Tá cursíos ar mhórshaothar Sheáin sa leabhar Éist leis an gCóta.

‘I gClochar i bParóiste an Fheirtéaraigh a saolaíodh Seán a’ Chóta (Seán Óg Ó Caomhánaigh) sa bhliain 1885 ach is i mBaile na Rátha, Dún Chaoin, a tógadh é. Fear ildánach, éagsúil ab ea an Cóta a raibh saibhreas mór Gaeilge ó dhúchas aige: múinteoir, iriseoir, údar, saighdiúir agus foclóirí. Fear siúlach, scéalach ar mhó madra mallaithe agus drochbhean tí a chuir sé de ar a shiúlta ó Dhún Chaoin go Deacóite. Bhí caidreamh aige ar aos léinn a linne agus ar cheannródaithe an náisiúin nua. Is mó gné den scríbhneoireacht a chleachtaigh an t-údar idir scríbhneoireacht chruthaitheach agus eile, ach dála an Dr. Johnson féin is ar a mhórshaothar foclóireachta de chaint bheo Chorca Dhuibhne, Croidhe Cainnte Ciarraighe, a mhaireann a cháil.’ - An Sagart

Níl aon teora ach an féile caide agus iomána a bhí againn an deire seachtaine seo caite.

Chuir bua Mhaigh Eo duairceas ar Chiarraigh de bharr ghaisce. Dhein buachaillí Mhaigh Eo an bheart ortha. Cuirim mar seo é is iad, Tom Sullivan (2 pht), Paul Geaney (3 pht- fuair a chol ceathrair 2-5 do fhoireann an Daingin ina gcluiche in aghaidh na Stacach,Thrá Lí). Bhí Barra Ó Súilleabháin ag imirt don nDaingean chomh maith nuair a cheart dó a bheithi gCill Áirne ach ní raibh cuireadh fachta aige. An bheirt dearthár ó Fhosa, Páidí agus Dáithí Clifford an báideóir an ceathrar ab fhearr. Mar seo a thabharfainn marc as deich dhóibh ag tosnú leis an mbáideóir -

Tás againn go raibh gortú ar Sheán Ó Sé agus is baolach ná fuil sé fós leath chomh maith is a bhíodh sé. Ba cheart deimhniú an bhfuil sé tagtha glan ón ngortú.

An fhoireann a bhí againn in aghaidh Mhaigh Eo bhí barra- liobar orthaníl aon tseans go mbuafadh siad aon chraobh Éireann, seans go mbeidh an gasra ceart ar fáil do Jeaic óir is fear géar ciallmhar cliste é. Ní locht a lochtaíonn. Mar thús beidh ortha Corcaigh agus Contae Lú a chlaoi.

Cad é cipineach a bhí idir Chorcaigh agus an gClár san iomáint. Dhein Tóní Kelly scrios ar Corcaigh.

Sa dara cluiche Luimneach agus Tiobrad Árann bhí faobhar agus fuadar fén dá fhoireann. Bhí breis don imirt ag Luimneach ach is dócha gur luig an méid poc a chuireadar amú go mór ortha. Glac leis go raibh na Tiobradánaigh gléasta chun catha chomh maith le Luimneach. Chun scéal fadálach a chiorrú chríochnaíodar cothrom. An- dhá chluiche.

Rud a chuir isteach ar scata ná an líon cluchí tábhachtacha go raibh ar dhaoine díol asta. Réiteofar é sin fós, is dócha.

Dornálaíocht

Bhí Céití Taylor ár laoch, sa bhaile ag troid go gairmiúil an chéad uair ina saol gairmiúíl ach theip uirthi, oíche Dé Sathairn i mBleá Cliath. Bhí beirt don dtriúr moltóirí i bhfábhar bhean Learpholl. Ní raibh aon fhocal olc ná maith fén gcomhrac le clos in aon chlár fiú is gur i mBleá Cliath a bhí sé. Bhí deich bhabhta sa chomórtas, ach timpeall a trí a chlog a bhí an toradh ar RTE nuacht. Ní eolaí mé ar na cúirimí seo ach dá mbeadh an comórtas i Meiriceá gach seans go mbeadh tuairisc ar an gcomhrac, ach cuimhnigh seans go raibh socair acu siúd a bhí i mbun an chomórtais gan aon chraoladh a bheith ann nó rud éigin mar sin. Glac leis go bhfuil gaiscí ar ghaiscí déanta ag Céití agus tá an saol Gaolach mórtasach as a bhfuil curtha i gcrích aici agus ní i meáchain amháin.

Putin

Tá conach ar Phutin go bhfuil sé agus a arm á threascairt san Úcráin ach ní gheill sé fós fiú go bhfuil tiortha an Iarthair agus an Oirthir scata acu ná aontaíonn le cogadh Phutin, agus atá ag cur brú air. Is beag tír atá ag cabhrú sa chogadh bréagach seo seachas an Iráin agus Belarús. Seans gan dabht go bhfuil an Chorea Thuaidh. Ó thaobh na Síne níl aon chinnteacht fén mbeartas atá acu. Measann an tSín gur cheart cainteanna síochána a bhéith ann. Gan dabht tá an saol mór don dtuairim má théann Putin i mbun buamaí admhacha go marófar na milliúin ag áireamh a mhuintir féin. Is trua é mar scéal ach níl aon dabht ach go bhfuil an diabhal thiar ar Phutin agus ní ionadh é. Tá an diabhal istigh i bPutin agus níl aon chuimhneamh aige fágaint. M’fhéidir go mbeadh thiar air fós.

Tithe.

Aréír a chuala gur tógadh trí mhíle tigh anuiridh agus tá 40, 000 le tógaint i mbliana nó breis. An mó duine in Eirinn a thógann a dtithe féin. Measann daoine áirithe gur cheart gach áis a bheith acu saor in aisce faid is tá buachaillí agus cailíní ag saothrú lena dtigh féin a thógaint. An riach dath cúnaimh ach pinginí beaga atá ar fáil dá bhfurmhór. Níl le clos ach go bhfuil práinn ann, ach is cinnte go bhfuil géar chéim tithiochta againn rud a leighisfear, measaim

Toghchán

Dhein Sinn Féin gaisce i dtogcháin áitiúla na Sé Chontae. Tá breidhil ar Goeffrey bocht, breidhil ná fágfaidh é ar feadh i bhfad. Timpeall 31.7 fén gcéad dos na vótaí a fuair Sinn Féin, go maith chun cinn ar chách. Fuaireadar suíochán sa bhaile Meánach! Má bhíonn an méid chéannna fén gcéad ag Sinn Féin sa Phoblacht beidh siad ar an bpáirtí is mó. Tá sea agus ní shea ag baint leis sin, ach ní ró-fhada uainn an freagra. Bás.

Fuair Eibhlís ní Dhómhnaill, Shannon, Bleá Cliath agus an tSráid Bhaile, Caisleán ‘n Ghriaire bás an deire seachtain seo caite. Méala mór bás dá clann, Eibhlís,Máire, Mícheál, Tomás., dá gaolta agus a cáirde. Fuair a céile Tomás bás tamall ó shoin.

Beannacht Dé lena n-anamacha.

Fuair Pádraig ó Fathata ó Inis Meain, Inis, Contae an Chláir agus an Ghlaise Bheag bás ar an 9ú Bealtaine. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Helen Ní Chathallaín ón nGlaise Bheag, deirféaracha ,Treasa, Bríd agus Máirín agus deartháracha Seán, Mícheál, Colm agus Máirtín, gaolta agus cáirde.

Chuireadh Pádraig prátaí luaithe agus bhí dorn potaí aige agus bhreá leis bheith ag siúl na bhfaillteacha. Fear an- gheanuil cáirdiúil b’ea Pádraig. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a anam.
