Féile an Phráta

It’s Féile an Phráta time again, with the excitement and local competitive tension arising. The dates for the area competitions have now been confirmed .

Community involvement and the promotion of an Ghaeluinn have always been core features of An Féile. It is all as much a celebration of our community, our neighbours and our language, as a celebration of the poor humble spud and its history

An Fhéile has always been about the craic, our community, our neighbours, connection, and an Ghaeluinn - just fun and games. However, the Organisers and the Judges promise that everything will be done in a

way to guarantee the competitions clearly remain a ‘blind’ tasting. An independent person will receive the spuds, deliver them to the Judges; the Judges will not know whose spud they are tasting at any time. Great credit is due to the Judges and, especialle, to the Area Organisers, who voluntarily run the competition.

The Judges score each Potato, awarding from 1 to 20 for Taste and from 1 to 10 for each of the other four headings (Appearance; Smell; Texture; Overall Satisfaction) for each contestant.

Understanding the “Time of Day” Influence on Heart Attacks

Bob Geldof wrote a whole song about not liking Mondays but this week the doctors at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland revealed another reason when they revealed that you are more likely to have a fatal heart attack on a Monday rather than any other day in the week. This study examined over 10,000 patients who were admitted to hospital with the most serious type of heart attack, known as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) which occurs when a major coronary artery is completely blocked. While the riskiest day made the news this week we have known for quite some time that our circadian rhythm and timing of heart attacks are intrinsically linked.

The human body operates on an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates various physiological processes over a 24-hour cycle. This intricate system affects numerous bodily functions, including blood pressure, heart rate, hormone secretion, and even gene expression. Disruptions to the circadian rhythm, such as stress, shift work or jet lag, can disturb the delicate balance and impact cardiovascular health.

Research has indicated that the incidence of heart attacks exhibits a clear pattern throughout the day. The morning hours, particularly between 6 a.m. and noon, witness a surge in heart attacks, dubbed the "morning peak." This phenomenon is partly attributed to the abrupt changes in blood pressure, heart rate, and clotting factors that occur upon awakening. Additionally, the release of stress hormones like cortisol during the early morning hours can trigger plaque rupture in arteries. The fact that Monday is the riskiest day for heart attack is more likely to do with all of the above plus the additional stress (more cortisol) of returning to work after the weekend.

Conversely, heart attacks are less frequent during the late-night and very early hours, known as the "night-time dip." During this period, blood pressure and heart rate are relatively low, promoting better cardiac stability. However, individuals with pre-existing heart conditions may still be at risk, regardless of the time of day.

While the circadian rhythm plays a significant role, other lifestyle and environmental factors can amplify the impact of time of day on heart attacks. These include:

• Physical and emotional stress: Stressful situations, whether related to work, personal life, or other external factors, can trigger heart attacks.

During morning hours, the body is subjected to heightened stress due to increased physical activity, emotional stressors, and rush-hour traffic, exacerbating the risk.

• Sleep patterns: Poor sleep quality, sleep disorders like sleep apnea, and inadequate sleep duration can disrupt the circadian rhythm, leading to an increased risk of heart attacks. Addressing sleep-related issues is crucial in maintaining cardiovascular health.

• Dietary habits: Irregular eating patterns, excessive consumption of unhealthy foods, and skipping breakfast have been associated with an increased risk of heart attacks during the morning peak.

Camp Notes

While we cannot control the time of day, we can adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of heart attacks:

tradition down the centuries towns and villages, since time musicians and entertainers bringing hearts, hail, rain or snow, pandemic long may it continue!

Morning routine adjustments: Engaging in light physical activities, such as stretching or a short walk, can help gradually raise blood pressure and heart rate, minimizing the morning peak effect. It is also advisable to avoid sudden strenuous activities immediately upon awakening.

Balanced diet: The Mediterranean diet is primarily based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. These foods are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease. Unlike the standard Irish diet which is high in saturated and trans fats, the Mediterranean diet promotes the consumption of healthy fats, particularly monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, avocados, and nuts. These fats help reduce bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and lower the risk of heart disease.

The Med diet also encourages the consumption of fish, particularly fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines, which are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s have been shown to reduce inflammation and improve heart health. Additionally, the diet includes lean protein sources like poultry, eggs, and legumes. Red meat is eaten rarely and when it is, it is eaten in smaller portions. LOCAL HERO

Red wine is a traditional part of the Mediterranean diet. Red wine contains antioxidants, such as resveratrol, which have heart-protective effects. However, it's important to note that excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to health, so moderation is key. The Mediterranean diet discourages the consumption of highly processed and refined foods, which are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. Instead, it promotes whole, unprocessed foods that are closer to their natural state. Understanding the influence of time of day on heart attacks empowers us to take proactive steps in safeguarding our cardiovascular health. By recognizing the patterns, managing stress, prioritizing sleep, eating proper, nourishing foods and being physically active every day, we can minimize the impact of the circadian rhythm and lifestyle factors on our heart health. Embracing these lifestyle modifications, alongside regular medical check-ups, will allow us to seize control of our well-being and reduce the risk of heart attacks at any time of day.

FARM SAFETY SCHEME, UNDER TAMS 3 ANNOUNCED

Martin Heydon, Agriculture Minister with responsibility for Health & Safety has announced that the Farm Safety Scheme under the new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS 3) is now open for applications. This is the first time that farm safety investments have their own standalone scheme under TAMS and have been enhanced with a higher grant rate of 60%. Farm safety is something that must be put first in farming and all workplaces. This Farm Safety Capital Investment Scheme offers grant-aid on the investments to support farmers to invest in newer and safer equipment and facilities for their farms. There is a wide range of items available under the Farm Safety Scheme including fixed and mobile handling facilities for cattle, sheep, and horses, replacements for agitation points or older slats, safety cages for roofs, upgrades to electric wiring, yard lights, livestock monitors and fertility tags, wheel changing equipment, and silage bale slicer with plastic remover.

The objective of the Scheme is to provide an incentive to farmers to avail of investments to improve their own safety and that of their farm. Grant aid will only be paid on approved, completed and eligible expenditure and shall be paid at the rate of 60% up to the applicable maximum investment ceiling of €90,000 per holding. Multiple applications per tranche are permissible. However, the minimum amount of investment which is eligible for approval under this Scheme is €2,000 per application.

Farm safety continues to be one of the most critical issues which needs to be addressed on farms today. In terms of workplace fatalities, it is the most dangerous occupation in Ireland with an average of 19 fatal incidents per year on farms over the past decade. Fatalities on farms account for over 40% of all fatal workplace incidents in Ireland, while farmers only account for 6% of the workforce. With around 4,500 non-fatal injuries annually on farms, many are life changing and place the farmers’ livelihood and farm at risk. Livestock, particularly cows after calving, vehicles and machinery, falls from heights, slurry and hazardous substances all pose risks, but incidents can be avoided if these risks are properly managed.

Investment items include fixed and mobile handling facilities and equipment for all animals, replacement of agitation points and older slats, safety cages for roofs, upgrades to electric wiring, yard lights, livestock monitors and fertility tags, wheel changing equipment, hydraulic motors to replace PTO shafts, and silage bale slicer with plastic remover. Grant aid will not be paid for (a) second-hand materials or equipment or (b) ex-demo or (c) work carried out by contractors who do not comply with the tax clearance requirements laid down in paragraph 10 of the scheme. Queries should be submitted to: tams@agriculture.gov.ie

€10 MILLION INVESTMENT IN THE HORTICULTURE SECTOR

The 2023 Scheme of Investment Aid for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector is now open. The scheme, which covers all horticultural areas including field vegetables, mushrooms, protected food crops, amenity crops, soft fruit, and apples, to beekeeping, aims to facilitate environmentally friendly practices, promote the diversification of on-farm activities, improve the quality of products and improve working conditions. This scheme not only aids existing producers but also new entrants to horticulture, with qualifying young farmers receiving up to 50% grant aid. The 2023 Scheme of Investment Aid for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector is 100% funded by the Irish Government. Funding increased from €9 million in Budget 2022 to €10 million in Budget 2023andf will close for applications on 30 June 2023.

The granting of approval of aid for investments under the 2023 Scheme of Investment Aid for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector shall only be granted after approval by the European Commission in accordance with the conditions set out in point 1.1.1.1. of the European Union Guidelines for State aid in the agricultural and forestry sectors and in rural areas. Application Forms and the Scheme Terms and Conditions are available online. You can also get them by emailing horticulturegrants@ agriculture.gov.ie

DRY WEATHER IMPACTS GRASS GROWTH

Grass growth appears to be holding fairly strong for now, but without rain coming soon, many farms may start running short. A little over two weeks ago the worry was that first cut would be harvested and we were in for a wet summer, now the worry is much different. Now many farmers, particularly those based on the south and east, are praying for rain, as average farm cover on many farms begins to drop and some paddocks start to burn-up.

In some areas, grass in starting to become stressed and going to head, which means that grass quality is now dropping.

Soil moisture deficits in the south and east are between 55mm and 39mm, with this likely to increase further as the we move into the weekend. Based on current forecasts there is no rain due and temperatures are set to increase for the bank holiday weekend. The dry weather has resulted in some disruption to many farmers plans for second cut silage. The dry weather means that farmers are concerned about spreading chemical fertiliser and slurry on land that is marked for harvesting of silage. For now if you have low dry matter (DM) or watery slurry you should spread this on the fields you plan to use for second cut. Chemical fertiliser should be put on hold for now until, some moisture is available to wash it in. The slurry will contain a certain amount of nitrogen (N) which will can used by the crop and the remaining N required can be spread later.

McCONALOGUE MAINTAINS THAT FARMERS ARE UP FOR REDUCTION IN HERD

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has said farmers are “very much up for” exploring a voluntary dairy reduction scheme. This may be a stretch, but he believes what he says. This despite many others doubting other comments from said Minister. It comes amid reports that the numbers of dairy cows in Ireland will have to be reduced by up to 65,000 cows per year up to 2025 if the agriculture sector is to meet its climate reduction targets. The sector has been tasked with cutting its carbon emissions by 25% by the end of the decade. However, Rural Independent TD Michael Collins denounced it as a “secret plot to massacre our precious cows”, adding that the “government has been caught redhanded in a diabolical scheme to exterminate our bovine population” and said: “The government’s draconian emission reduction targets for agriculture would inevitably result in a nationwide cow massacre.”

It is also claimed that the voluntary dairy reduction scheme is an attempt to diminish and annihilate the sector’s capabilities.

Minister McConalogue told RTE that “his team” is currently scoping out a voluntary dairy reduction scheme and that “it’s something that’s under consideration. That does not mean that the farming sector is ready or willing to reduce herd size, and just indicates that the Minister is hopeful that the outcome will be “favourable to his wishes”.

While the Minister believes that this is “a journey that farmers are already on” and that farmers are “very much up for” schemes like these, this is not the case, and many farmers believe there is a need for expansion to meet workd food demands.

The Department of Agriculture will apparently offer a 50% increase in government funding for schemes that would support farmers reduce production/herd numbers by 25% (in terms of carbon emissions from farming by 2030). Much work needs to be done, to ensure that farmers are not railroaded by an increasingly unpopular minister.

WHITE-TAILED EAGLE – PHASE II

In 2020, the National Parks and Wildlife Service began a second phase white-tailed eagle reintroduction project to bolster the existing eagle population in Ireland. The original reintroduction programme (2007-2011) involved releasing 100 young white-tailed eagles in Killarney National Park, County Kerry. The released eagles subsequently dispersed widely throughout Ireland with the first successful breeding occurring in 2012 on Lough Derg, County Clare. By July 2020, a small breeding population of eight to ten pairs had successfully fledged 31 chicks across counties Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway and Tipperary.

Some Irish-bred eagles are now reaching maturity and starting to breed in the wild. However, a scientific review of the reintroduction project

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

indicated the small population is still vulnerable to mortality factors such as Avian Influenza, illegal poisoning and extreme weather events. This second release programme aims to ensure the population is robust enough to give this once extinct species the best possible chance of long-term success in Ireland.

The new phase of the reintroduction programme (2020-2022) involves the release of young eagles at several sites, including Lough Derg, the lower Shannon estuary and Killarney National Park. In early June 2020, the project began with the collection of ten chicks from nests in Norway (under licence by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research). The juvenile White-tailed Eagles were flown into Kerry airport and were held in specially-built aviaries in Munster before being released in August 2020. All of the birds were wing-tagged and satellite tagged. By early 2021, the satellite tracks showed they had spread out across Munster and northwards up the Shannon River.

Each year of the project, the same process will occur: eagle chicks (aged 7-10 weeks old) will be flown to Ireland, reared until ready to fly, tagged and released. The tagging allows their dispersal around Ireland and their survival rates to be closely monitored. Sightings from members of the public will also be an important component of the monitoring.

An important aspect of any such releases is cooperation with the farming

communities in the release areas and where birds settle to breed. During the first phase of the release project, managed by the NPWS and the Golden Eagle Trust, a good relationship was established with the farming community, with farmers helping to monitor birds and nests at some nesting sites. The second phase release hopes to build on this relationship to ensure that farming and eagles continue to coexist to their mutual benefit.

As well as bringing biodiversity and ecosystem benefits, restoring this flagship species can deliver potential economic benefits. Under the first phase of the reintroduction programme, the re-establishment of breeding white-tailed eagles at sites like Glengarriff, Lough Derg and Killarney National Park has proven hugely popular with local residents and visitors.

1901 Census Miscellany in West Kerry

The 1901 Census was taken on Sunday March 31. We have virtually exhausted the information contained on the forms. So we’re going to look at some of the names, mistakes, mysteries, and mischief contained in both the hand-written census forms and the printed versions.

Nano. Around Christmas time in 1900, or maybe the New Year in 1901, a baby girl was born to John and Bridget Courtney of Coumduff, Annascaul. They named her Nano. She was three months old at the time of the Census.

In the townland of Ballyarkane Eighter, Lack, a young woman named Nanno Barton, 19, was pursuing a trade in dressmaking. It’s more than likely that both were named after the founder of the Presentation order of nuns Nano Nagle whose real first name was Honora.

Several sisters of the Presentation order arrived in Dingle in late 1828 and opened their first school near the old parish church in Green Street. About ten years before their arrival a young girl named Anne Foran was born in County Kerry.

In the 1901 Census she was aged 82, the oldest sister in the Presentation order in Dingle at that time. She didn’t live to be included in the 1911 Census but died on February 18, 1908, in her 90th year. Her remains lie under the old copper beech tree in the Díseart garden.

Another of the order was Phillis O’Sullivan, who was born in New York around 1860. She was aged 51 in the 1911 Census and died aged 100+ fifty years later on April 2, 1961. She also rests under the spreading copper beech. The Mother Superior of the Dingle order in 1901 and 1911 was Anne Hayes. According to the 1901 Census she was born in County Kerry but in the 1911 Census her place of birth was recorded as Dingle. She passed away on November 5th in 1918, aged 80 - six days before the end of World War 1.

The most unusual name among the sisters in 1901 was Elizabeth Weldrick. Unusual in Ireland it may be but said to be very common in Yorkshire. She died on April 27, 1920, aged 71, and rests with her sisters above.

Another rare or unusual name among the sisters was that of Anna Bruen. She was born in County Carlow and, at age 20 in 1901, was the youngest sister in the Dingle convent. She lived for another 65 years and died on December 29, 1966. She too is shaded by the magnificent copper beech.

Two of the sisters did not enjoy long lives following the 1901 Census. Marianne Byrne from County Dublin passed away on April 2, 1903 aged 33. Alice Bowen from Limerick died on October 30 1904, aged 32. They both share part of the graveyard in the Díseart grounds. Moving on…. Chatolics. John Curran, 60, and his wife Kate, 43, lived in Annascaul, (the census form refers to Auniscaul), where they had a shop. They had two daughters and three step-sons. The step-sons were all named Devane.

The five children were recorded as ‘Catholics’ while John and Kate were recorded as ‘Chatolics’ on the hand-written form (Form A). Why didn’t

the enumerator, Constable John Sharkey, 39 from Roscommon, spot the spelling mistakes? And why did the person who transcribed the handwritten form to print allow the spelling error to continue in the printed form? We’ll never know. Lots more like this.

Copperwaite. John Copperwaite, 50, lived in Gortmore, Ballyferriter, with his wife Elizabeth, 48, and their daughter Jane, 24. The three of them were born in England and John’s occupation was ‘Priest of the Church of Ireland’. The first part of the name may have come from ‘Cooper’ which had origins in the German language meaning a barrel or container. As for the second part of the name it may have been Twaite or Thwaite originally and may refer to a meadow, a paddock or an enclosure. So, the cooper’s enclosure? Speculative.

While we’re mentioning coopers, there were dozens of them in West Kerry in 1901. Michael Long, 50, lived in Cantra, Ventry and he was a ‘Master cooper’. If the coopering trade was similar to the tailoring trade then Michael would have had to serve seven years apprenticeship before qualifying as a cooper.

Then he would have to spend years perfecting his trade before being recognised or qualified as a ‘Master’. His son Patrick, 21, was also a cooper. Marcella. John Somers, 53, and his wife Mary, 39, lived in Castlegregory where John was the ‘Post Master’. The couple had eight children – a tidy four girls and four boys. Some of them had typical first names such as John, Margaret, Rachel and Robert. But two of their children had names that were anything but typical in an Irish family.

One of the boys was named Eusebius, 9, and we met him in a previous census edition. The youngest member of the Somers family was named Marcella and she was aged one month. The name Marcella was popular in the 19th century and is believed to be of Latin origin, hence its popularity in Italy. It may be related to Mars, the god of war.

Science Made Simple: The Stars

3rd in a series of science articles written by David Redican, to provide feedback/suggestions email MrRedicanTutor@gmail.com

BEGINNER

Article 1 was about some of the smallest conceivable things scientists can image – Atoms then Article 2 discussed the billions of transistors which can fit in your pocket these days so now I feel it’s time to talk about the infinite nothingness which we stare out at every clear night when we look at the stars – Space. Let’s start by discussing those stars that we see, our own star (Sol) is a bright beacon which brings us the light of day, the ancient Egyptians worshipped it as “Ra”, the Greeks as “Helios” and the Romans as “Sol Invictus”. The sun came into being 4.6 billion years ago when a dense spinning mass of dust left over from earlier stars began to clump together. The Dust formed the 4 Terrestrial (Rocky) Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and at its centre the dense mass of dust clumped together to form a sphere of mostly hydrogen. The intense pressure in the centre from this great mass raised its temperature until Nuclear fusion began and the Sun first started shining as a Star in the centre of the Solar System we call home. The stardust that became the sun also became everything on Earth, from the grassy sheep fields of Kerry to the bouncing Kangaroos of Australia.

MODERATE

What happens to Stars when they die?

The death of a Star all comes down to mass, which is perhaps why we hold a mass for a lost loved one. Depending on how massive a star is it can either become a (i) Red/white Dwarf (ii) Neutron Star (ii) Black Hole.

When a Star burns away all of its energy it is still left with (Roughly) the same mass, which means it still has the same force of gravity, the gravity crushes it without its energy to hold its original radius and it shrinks in size, when it has finished being compressed it has a density that’s much greater than before. Our Sun, which will become a white dwarf, will have a density of about 1,000,000,000 Kg/m^3 when it has become a white dwarf. To put that in perspective, if you were to have a teaspoon of white dwarf star, it would weigh more than 8 thousand fully loaded SuperValu lorries on their way to stock up the shelves across the country. A Star which has 10 – 25 times the mass of our Sun will become a Neutron Star after an intense explosion, called a Supernova, which is brighter than an entire Galaxy and will have a density 1,000 times greater than the white dwarf. An even more massive star will become a Black Hole, it will get crushed down so small that it is a singular point in space, it has such intense gravitational forces that nothing can escape its “Event Horizon” (a theoretical sphere around the black hole which traps everything that comes close).

We certainly have the suitable terrain here in the Dingle Peninsula, also the accommodation and catering facilities, access at various points on all the marked walking routes and the transport facilities through Local Link and other transport groups. However as with all other categories of tourism we need to be conscious of the ever increasing competition from at home and abroad particularly as the consumer is more price conscious in recent times.

WORKS. A number of car owners were left disappointed over the June Bank Holiday Weekend as the Electric Vehicle Chargers were not back in operation following upgrading at The Wood Car Park and neither were the newly erected units at Morans Garage ready for use. A little better planning and coordination of such important facilities is needed if we are to continue to be a competent tourist destination

for all vehicle owners.

Work on the Mail Road Ugrading Project is nearing completion. However the wall at Fr McCarthys Raised Garden area at the rear entrance to the Cooleen Houses has not been replaced but hopefully the powers in charge will not leave the main entrance road to town without some decent looking perimeter to an ugly earth bank. Also the new entrance area to the Library in Green Street should be completed shortly as new guard railings are expected to be in place within the next few weeks.

TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. We appeal to all dog owners to please bring along poo bags when taking your animals for some exercise and help keep our town clean and tidy. We have come across poo bags indiscriminantly disposed of in various hidden corners of late and probably by the same person or persons. Surely it is not too much trouble to take the bag when used to the next available bin especially after going to the trouble of picking it up in the first place.

ROAD SAFETY. The records of road deaths show a huge increase for the first few months of 2023 compared to recent years. We appeal to all vehicle owners and drivers to reduce your speed a little further and to all other road users to wear high vis clothing when on public roads at any time of day or night. Everybody’s contribution should help prevent serious injury or death so yes a little thought before you travel may save someones life even on your shortest journey. .

Marie was the daughter of Nicholas And Kathleen O’Loughlin and grew up on the family farm in Glenlarhan, Cordal, Castleisland where she had may happy years with her sisters Aileen, Deirdre, Margaret and Nicola and her brother Micheal. She met her husband Patrick and they were married on 8th May 1982 and enjoyed 40 happy and wonderful years at their family home in Cordal. Marie deeply loved her 3 children Linda, Stephen and Maria. At the start of their life together, Patrick was studying law and qualified as a solicitor in 1986. During the early years, Marie was the main bread winner and she supported Patrick in his studies and was a loving mother to Linda, Stephen and Maria.

They commenced their legal practice together in May 1993 and they worked together since then up until Friday 16th December 2022. The practice developed with the help of their loyal friend Noreen Scollard and in 2018 their daughter Linda Enright joined the team and their daughter Maria joined also in 2020

Leaving work on the Friday 16th December, life was just wonderful, their two grandchildren Charlotte and Aaron spend the night with them for the first and last time that Friday night…

Marie was the rock upon which we all relied. Marie loved Dunquin and Dingle, where she worked in a B and B as a student. She started her own B and B business in 1998 and the family enjoyed many happy days and years in West Kerry.

She adored her 3 children and spoke of each of them each and every day. Marie was a person of great Christian faith and strength , she said the rosary every day and said prayers every night that her children, grandchildren, family and friends would be very happy. She had legions of holy medals and holy prayers which she had everyday in her handbag.

Marie was a kind and considerate person who left a deep warm impression on anyone she met and would go to the ends of the earth to help family, friends and clients.

Also she was a qualified chef and always loved cooking meals for her family and friends in Cordal and Dunquin where many happy hours of laugher and joy were enjoyed.

Her untimely death a few hours after a routine hospital admission on Saturday 17th December has brought her family and many friends to our knees with shock and despair. Our only consolation is knowing that her deep faith and religion now means she is in heaven and she will bless us and help us each day with her warm smile and earnest prayers.

Marie’s month’s mind mass was celebrated at Castleisland Parish Church at 7pm on Tuesday, 31st January 2023.

Bláthanna an Mheithimh

Tá an fásra sna clathacha ar fud na dúthaí fé bhláth na laethanta seo. Thug an teas agus an brothall gile agus aoibhneas an dúlra chugainn le roinnt seachtainí anuas. Ceann desna bláthanna is áille díobh ná an lus mór. Ainmneacha eile ar an lus mór ná lus na mban sí, méaracáin an táilliúra, méireanta sí nó méireanta púcaí. In ainneoin an planda seo a bheith nimhneach d’úsáidtí go minic chun leighis é. Banríon na luibheanna leighis ab ea é i mbéaloideas na hÉireann.

Bhí clú agus cáil ar an lus mór don digeatáilín a úsáidtear fós inniu mar leigheas ar ghalar croí. Dheintí tae leis a dh’óltaí chun scórnach thinn, slaghdáin nó fiabhras a leigheas. Agus dheintí cógas as mar leigheas ar ghalair chraicinn, at nó dó. Mar is léir ón ainm creideadh go raibh ana-bhaint ag an lus mór leis an slua sí. Chreidtí go raibh cosaint ar fhuadach an linbh sa lus mór chomh maith le cosaint ar aicídí a d’fhéadfadh an slua sí a tharrac ar leanaí. Ní thabharfaí isteach sa tigh é ar eagla an mhí-áidh.

Chreidtí gurbh í an tréimhse ab fhearr chun an lus mór a bhaint le haghaidh cúrsaí leighis ná Oíche Sain Seáin ar an 23 Meitheamh, nuair a cheiliúrtar an lá is faide sa bhliain nó grianstad an tsamhraidh. Bhí an neart ba mhó sna luibheanna ar fad timpeall an ama seo. Uaireanta mhaireadh an séasúr sin chomh fada le Seana-Oíche Sain Seáin ar an 29 Meitheamh. Tá cur síos anseo thíos ó Chorca Dhuibhne ar conas mar a dh’úsáidtí an luibh leighis: Luibh do thinneas droma , í bheirbhiú agus cúpla spionóg don uisge do thabhairt trí mhaideanacha ar céalacan. Do bhí fear i mBaile Eaglaise go raibh a bhean go h-olc le tinneas droma. B'éigean di fanacht sa leabhaidh ar fad leis.

Chuaidh sé agus bhain sé an lus mor agus chuir sé ag beiriúghadh í. Thug sé iniomad don uisge lé n-ól di agus mhairbh sé í. Níor cheart acht cúpla spionóg a thabhairt.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Drink Can Rings, Old Spectacles & Used Postage Stamps: Many thanks to all who are continuing to collect.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

News Items If any local groups have any news items they would like to be made known, such as match fixtures, results, courses or anything of special interest-could groups inform the office by 12 midday on Monday mornings so that it can be entered into the local community news items in the newspapers.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

WE ALSO SUPPLY & INSTALL THE FOLLOWING:

Recycling and Refuse Services are provided at both Dillons and Higgins in Tralee.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

St. Mary’s Camp: There is no longer a Sunday Mass at 12 noon. – Mass is a Vigil Mass on every second Saturday @ 6.15pm. (it alternates with St. Brendan’s Cloghane). Please check the weekly parish newsletters to know exact dates for these Masses.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Yoga with Fenella O'Regan: Saturdays - 9.30am and Mondays 6.30 in the Clubrooms. Contact Fenella - 087 2880628

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

A Tuscan Salad perfect for warm evening!

Having this salad sitting outside at moment, you will think that you are sitting in Tuscany in Italy, warm sun and great food. Enjoy this and put it in your recipe collection and make it often, you won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients

1 red onion, thinly sliced

1 red pepper

1 yellow pepper

handful of ripe tomatoes cut into large dice.

¾ slices of old bread cut into large dice

20ml white wine vinegar

1tbsp capers

2 anchovies, finely chopped

1 small clove of garlic, crushed

60ml extra virgin olive oil

small bunch of fresh basil

Method

Preheat the oven to 180º

Place the onion slices in a bowl of cold water with a pinch of salt, and leave to soak for an hour. This will take the sharpness from them. Put the tomatoes in a colander over a bowl and add a little salt. Leave them for a little while to drain. Drizzle the peppers with oil and put them on a tray and then into the oven for about 30 minutes. Once they are cooked, remove them from the oven and place them in a bowl and cover them with cling film. After a few minutes they should be easy to peel. Once peeled, cut them into strips.

Place the bread in a bowl and add a little vinegar, drain the onion and add it to the bowl along with the capers, peppers and tomatoes.

Mix the anchovies, garlic into the strained tomato juice and whisk in the extra olive oil. Pour this over the salad and mix it in very gently. Tear the basil and sprinkle over the top.

Allow this to sit for about 20 minutes before serving.

News from Dingle Hub

Chorca Dhuibhne Tourism & Hospitability SEC

Over 120 businesses on the Dingle peninsula have begun their first stage of the Corca Dhuibhne Tourism and Hospitability Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) just in time before the busy summer season ahead!

This ambitious initiative aims to establish the Dingle Peninsula as a sustainable Tourism Destination by developing an energy master plan where sector specific recommendations will be made and will have a significant impact

in reducing the carbon output of the tourism sector on the peninsula.

The initial stage of the project focuses on monitoring energy usage in 10 businesses situated across the Dingle Peninsula. These businesses have been carefully selected to represent a diverse range of tourism-related establishments, including hotels, pubs, restaurants, cafés, attractions and has been fully funded by Fáilte Ireland. The monitoring process will be facilitated by DC Six Technologies.

A sustainable questionnaire has been sent out to coincide with the monitoring to gather data on energy consumption in this sector on the peninsula. Members are required to provide information on energy consumption

patterns, including the amount and type of energy used, as well as how it is utilized within their establishments. Furthermore, the questionnaire delves into building specifics such as fabric, Building Energy Ratings (BER), age, and whether the property is rented by the business or privately owned. Additionally, data on food waste generation will be collected to assess opportunities for improvement in waste management practices.

By analysing this data, the project aims to develop tailored strategies to reduce energy consumption and minimize the carbon footprint of the participating businesses in the form of the energy master plan.

The sustainable tourism community project on the Dingle Peninsula represents an essential milestone in the journey toward a greener and more sustainable future for Ireland's tourism industry. It serves as an example for other destinations, showcasing the significant impact that collaborative efforts and innovative technologies can have on creating a more sustainable and resilient tourism sector.

A Ploutos Open Day was held on Sean Kennedy’s farm in Dún Síon to discuss the outcomes and learning of the project. Sensors in different areas of the farms fed weather and soil data back to an app on the participant's phone. Farmers used the data to help decide when to spread slurry or fertiliser.

Comhghairdeas le Murphy's Ice Cream who are now a verified member of the Bord Bia Origin Green programme. Origin Green is the national food and drink sustainability programme. To attain Origin Green a company must demonstrate exceptional annual performance in areas like raw material sourcing, water and energy efficiency, waste reduction and social sustainability. Eco Empire and the Habitat Hero's were deserved winners on the day after putting in months of research, preparation and sheer hard graft into their projects.

Habitat Heroes organised Beach cleans while also creating an initiative 'little and often' to encourage people to bring at least one piece of rubbish back from their beach walks. They also created a documentary called 'Ocean Eye' to create awareness about coastal conservation and they wrote a children's book in English and in Irish to connect with younger children on these pertinent issues. They have also lobbied local politicians and spoken out on Radio Kerry about coastal change. The Habitat Heros are, Patrick Harrington-Stack, Kyra Henderson-Sixsmith, Imogene Murphy, Zoe Costello, Carla Qualter and Emily Heasman.

Eco Empire have fundraised and organised a polytunnel for our school, created an outdoor classroom, constructed a pond for wildlife, planted an orchard of 12 apple trees as a garden of remembrance for our loved ones, organised a tree planting day for the community, grown potatoes and rhubarb organically for the school, connected with local community groups such as The Dingle Hub, local primary schools, Spar shop in Castlegregory, The Wetlands in Tralee to raise awareness about sustainable living and environmental conservation of the environment. They have created a booklet to inform people how to grow vegetables organically and they have been featured in a mini documentary about the school's Geo-Park and it's benefits for outdoor education.

Well done to all that took part and made it to the final including Meán Scoil's Petal Works who, unfortunately, weren't selected as winners but were highly recommended as their product of natural paint pigments is quite unique and environmentally sound.

Tá mórán le ceiliúradh ag pobal Chorca Dhuibhne! Tháinig torthaí Daonáireamh 2022 amach le déanaí agus tá borradh fé’n nGaelainn sa cheantar i gcomparáid le 2016.

The people of West Kerry have much to celebrate! The results of the 2022 Census were released recently and Irish has grown in the area since 2016.

An sprioc atá ag Tobar Dhuibhne leis an obair phleanála teanga sa dúthaigh ná cur le líon na gcainteoirí Gaelainne, agus deir na figiúirí sa Daonáireamh go bhfuil rudaí ag dul sa treo ceart, diaidh ar ndiaidh.

Tobar Dhuibhne’s goal with our language planning work in the area is to increase the number of Irish speakers, and the Census figures show that West Kerry is going in the right direction, bit by bit.

Míle comhghairdeachas le gach éinne agaibh – mórtas áite agus teangan le braistint go mór. Cabhraíonn gach cúpla focal agus bailíonn brobh beart – is pobal iontach atá againn i gCorca Dhuibhne.

A huge congratulations to everyone – pride of place and pride of language can be felt hugely. Every few words help and many a little makes a mickle. We have a great community in Corca Dhuibhne.

Ná Dearmad an Comhscór!

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Bheadh sé an-éasca dearmad a dhéanamh an tseachtain seo ar an éacht a déanadh as baile idir an dá chluiche díomáiteacha a tharla ar a dhá thaobh.

Tar éis turas fada – mura bhfuil dul amú orm, an turas is faide a bhíonn ar fhoireann ar bith sa sraith seo – d'éirigh le muintir Chiarraí cómhscór a bhaint amach le muintir Chláirsigh na Finne, i gcluiche dian gan géilleadh ar an dá thaobh.

Cuireann taisteal fada mar sin tuirse ar éinne a bhionn ina bhun, agus ni taise do pheileadóirí é, go háirithe ar dhaoine óga, dá mhéid a gcleachtadh coirp agus a gcuid aclaíochta roimh ré.

Roimhe sin, bhí droch-oíche acu sa bhaile i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair agus muintir Loch Garman chucu. Cuireadh dhá chúl ina gcoinne roimh leathama, agus an chéad uair a chonaicamar orthu é, chúlaigh siad ina gcosantóirí ina dhiaidh sin, rud nach oir in aon chor dóibh.

Ionsaí an chosaint is fearr a deirtear i gcónai, ach a mhalairt a rinne na Ciarraígh an oíche seo, agus buaileadh ceithre chúl eile ina gcoinne sa dara leath, ceann acu san am chúiteamh ghortaithe, an ceathrú chúl an oíche sin ag Aaron Dobbs.

Sa chluiche ó thuaidh, ba iad lucht cosanta na Ríochta ba mhó a raibh buíochas ag dul dóibh as gan aon rud a ghéilleadh ó thús deireadh, Rob Vasiu go háirithe ag cur bac ar ionsaithe na foirne baile. Mar sin féin, ainneoin treán-iarrachtaí na gCláirseach ag druidim i dtreo deireadh an imeartha, ba ghar nár bhain Ryan Kelliher cúl na bua dóibh in am chúiteamh gortaithe nuair a d'éirigh le Tim Hiemer, ar an dara h-iarracht, an liathróid a choinneáil ón eangach.

Oíche fhiúntach i bhfad ó bhaile.

Ach an Luan dar gcionn, agus cúigear den bhfoireann tosaigh b'fhéidir ag smaoineamh ar scrúduithe na hArd-Teiste nach raibh i bhfad uathu, bhí teip thubaisteach eile acu.

Foireann nach mór lán-aimsearach atá ag Port Láirge anois, agus antaithí acu ar an liathróid a chur san eangach: tá comhlíon cúil scóráilte acu is atá ag Gaillimh Aontaithe. Ní nach ionadh más ea, is dócha, go raibh féasts roimh an slua a bhailigh isteach i dTrá Lí trathnóna Luan Cincíse.

Ach dob ionadh má thaitin a lán dá bhfaca an slua baile leo, mar is ar Chiarraí a déanadh an slad, sé chúl ina n-aghaidh gan freagra, agu ní dócha go mba chúis ar bith sásaimh dóibh buaic-scórálaí na sraithe go dtí seo, Rónán Coughlan, ag baint ceithre chinn de na cúil sin amach. Tá cluiche amháin eile ag baile roimh mhuintir Chiarraí sara dtagann an rud ar a dtugtar an “briseadh lár-séasúir”. Ní briseadh ceart é, ach deireadh seachtaine amháin gan cluiche, ach tugann sé seans do na foirne bainistíochta machtnamh a dheanamh ar a bhfuil déanta agus ar a bhfuil bainte amach go dtí seo acu.

Léargas an Lae

Louise Nic an tSionnaigh le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne, Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar

leat sprioc éigin a bhaint amach (mar shampla, méid áirithe pointí san Ardteist!) – díomách, b’fhéidir, ach ní dian ort féin. Má rinne tú do sheacht ndícheall leis na huirlisí agus na hacmhainní a bhí agat ag an am, glac leis, tabhair focal molta duit féin as do chuid iarrachtaí, agus bog ar aghaidh. Tiocfaidh nó tarlóidh rud éigin eile – fiú i ngan fhios duit – in áit an chéad aidhm. Fiú deis sos a thógaint, agus ath-mheisiúnacht a dhéanamh ar an dtreo atá á thógaint agat. Seans nach dtuigfidh tú é ag an am ach éireoidh sé níos soiléiré le himeacht aimsire.

Elvis Presley, mar shampla – rinne seisean féin éisteacht do ghrúpa amháin, theip air, agus bhí air grúpa nua a aimsiú; leis an ngrúpa sin a bhí sé ag canadh nuair a d’aithin duine an bua a bhí ann.

Beyoncé – theip uirthi le grúpa amhránaíochta teilifíse nuair a bhí sí óg, agus as sin a d’eascair an grúpa Destiny’s Child.

Fred Astaire – bhíodh sé ag damhsa lena dheirfiúr ar dtús, ach d’éirigh sí as, agus is ansan a d’éirigh sé cáiliúil. B’fhéidir go raibh a sholas níos gile gan sise in aice leis. Cá bhfios?

J.K. Rowling – chuir gach foilsitheoir mór i Sasana an ruaig uirthi, ach lean sí ar aghaidh go dtí go raibh comhlacht beag sásta deis a thabhairt di. Déarfainn go bhfuil cumha ar na foilsitheoirí móra siúd anois!

“Bris cos.” An t-aon uair go mbíonn sé ceart go leor mianta droch-eispéireas a ghuí ar dhuine éigin ná nuair atá siad ag dul ar an stáitse agus a bheith páirteach i seó. Níl aon rud cosúil leis na mothúcháin in amharclann, ionad ealaíne nó pé suíomh atá ann – na sceitmíní, an t-atmaisféir, an tnúthán, an mistéir san aer nuair nach bhfuil slua cinnte cad atá i ndán dóibh…. Bhíos páirteach in ana-chuid des na hócáidí seo thar na blianta, agus thaitin siad go mór liom. Agus corruair, nuair nár thaitin, d’fhoghlaimíos ceacht éigin – agus sin beagnach gach pioc chomh tábhachtach.

Ar aon chuma, na mothúcháin thuasluaite, araon le suim MHÓR i gceoldrámaí agus amhránaíocht ná spreagadh domsa tiomáint isteach go Trá Lí cúpla seachtain ó shin i gcomhair cruinniú eolais do ghrúpa a bheidh ag cur “Phantom of the Opera” ar an stáitse i mí na Samhna. An bhfacaís nó ar chualaís riamh é? Ceol dochreidte ó Andrew Lloyd Webber, leathspreagtha as a shaol féin (níl seisean ina chónaí i ndoinsiú áfach), amhráin taibhseacha spéiriúla, agus scéal a bhrisfeadh do chroí. Cad atá in easnamh?!

Agus a bheith mar chuid de cheoldráma (nó dráma, ceolfhoireann, grúpa damhsa, srl.) ná – fiú ar feadh tréimhse gairid – a bheith mar chuid de phobal, a thagann agus a chuireann le chéile chun taispeántas speisialta a chruthú; a bheith i gclann mhór mhífheidhmeach atá ag treabhadh leo chun an sprioc céanna a bhaint amach. Is taithí shuntasach í. Chomh luath is atá sé thart, áfach, déanann an chuid is mó dearúd ar a chéile. Beithsine ait, agus n’fheadar an mbeinn in ann é a dhéanamh go lánaimseartha, ach ar feadh cúpla míosa cothaíonn sé an t-anam agus líonann sé an croí.

Imithe ar strae atáim, mar a tharlaíonn go minic. Ahem. Shiúlas isteach go dtí an gcruinniú, agus cheapas go rabhas sa tseomra mícheart. Club na nÓg a bhí ann, shíleas. Ach níorbh é; ‘díreach slua i bhfad níos óige ná mise. Níl sé sin ró-dheacair – ach is ar éigean go raibh éinne ar chomhaois liom ann. Ansin, fuaireas sracfhéachaint de bhacadóir nó bheirt eile, so thuigeas nach rabhas i m’aonar. Ach chuir sé sin isteach go mór orm, agus b’shin an chéad bhrat dearg.

Bhí na héisteachtaí ar siúl an tseachtain dár gcionn, agus fiú roimis san thosnaíos ag smaoineamh ar an strus a chruthófar dul isteach agus amach go Trá Lí ar a laghad uair sa seachtain, ag éirí níos rialta de réir ama. ‘Dara bhrat dearg. Ach bhí rogha ann físeán a sheoladh isteach, agus b’shin mar a dheineas – in ionad mo sheacht ndícheall a dhéanamh ag taisteal isteach arís (brat!). Rinneas roinnt cleachtadh i rith na seachtaine, ach ní ana-chuid (brat!), sheolas an t-éisteacht isteach, agus rinneas dearmad glan air (brat!). Tháinig na torthaí. Ag oscailt an téacs, ní rabhas neirbhíseach. Ní rabhas ar bís (brat! Brat!). Léas é, agus ón scáileán fuaireas an “Drochscéal” nach raibh FAIC faighte agam. Agus mise le teastas sa léirú cheoldrámaíochta. Hmph! Agus…..woohoo! (BRAT). An faoiseamh! Ní bheadh orm tiomáint isteach agus amach go minic sa dea-aimsir. Ní bheadh orm feighlí linbh a fháil. Ní bheadh orm seachtain ar fad a chur ar leataobh i mí na Samhna chun cúig seó istoíche agus an méid céanna i rith an lae a dhéanamh.

Bhíos chomh sásta leis na torthaí tubaistachta seo, cheapfá go bhfuireas an príomh-ról. Agus sin – i slí saghas simplí agus ciotarúnta, croí an scéil; uaireanta bíonn sé níos fearr gan an rud atá “Uait” a fháil. Uaireanta bíonn sé níos fearr nuair a theipeann ort. Ná bí dian ort féin muna n-éiríonn

Agus fiú muna bhfásann rud suntasach as an “bhFaillí”, is deis é féachaint siar agus chun tosaigh. Is deis é tosnú arís. Mar a dúirt Beckett, “Déan iarracht arís. Bíodh teip ort arís. Bíodh teip níos fearr ort.” Agus mar a dúirt Garth Brooks, “Uaireanta an bronnadh Dé is fearr a fhaighimid ná mianta nach bhfuil chomhlíonta.”

SENIORS: County League Division 4 (round 8):

Cromane 1-9 St Senans 2-19

Cromane were comprehensively beaten by a determined St Senans side on Sunday afternoon in Cromane. In energy-sapping conditions the visitors from north Kerry overran the Cromane men with two first half goals propelling them to a seven-point half time lead, 2-6 to 0-5. Highlights for Cromane were an early 45 from Darren Houlihan and points from play from Donnchadh Walsh and Mikey Houlihan.

Darren Houlihan cut the gap to one early in the second half but St Senans went on to add a further 0-13 in the half alone to run out easy winners. Only for young Cromane goalkeeper Darragh Crosby the margin of defeat could have been greater. Cromane did manage a few scores coming towards the end of the half with Ethan Griffin popping up from deep in defence for a point and Joshua O’Sullivan fisting home our only goal entering the later stages of the game. This was Joshua’s first goal in senior football for Cromane.

Next up for Cromane is round 9 away to Keel this weekend.

Team: Darragh Crosby; Shane Ahern, Ethan Griffin, Brice Dourieu; Cian Lyons, Eanna Healy, Liam O’Neill; Darren Houlihan, Sean Teahan; Tony Duffy, Sean O’Sullivan, Darragh McKeefry; Jason O’Connor, Donnchadh Walsh, Mikey Houlihan. Subs: Liam Joy, Finbar Casey, James Hurley, Joshua O’Sullivan, Aidan O’Sullivan, Niall Murphy, Padhraic McMahon.

UNDER-13s: Division 3 semi-final: GGC 3-14, Annascaul-Lios Poil 1-11

The GGC under-13s qualified for the Division 3 county league final with a fine nine-point win in Lios Poil on Sunday evening. Well done lads. It was a fine and consistent performance with GGC leading by 2-9 to 0-4 at the break.

There is no date set for the final at time of writing.

Division 16 semi-final: GGC 5-16, Laune Rangers B 1-6

This was an excellent win last Friday evening for the Maroon GGC team in their semi final against a battling Laune Rangers team in Cromane. Both teams played some great football and were credit to both clubs!

The Maroon GGC team ran out winners 5-16 1-6 and have qualified for league final.

Many thanks to Hannah Mary’s, Cromane, and Sheahan’s Centra, Glenbeigh, for the ice creams after training and games recently for both under-13 teams!

UNDER-11s: Our under-11s played Beaufort last Thursday evening in Cromane. We had 21 children togged out and we played four games of football. Thanks to Beaufort for travelling back on a beautiful evening. Our under-11s play their seventh game of the year against Castleisland Desmonds in Castleisland on Thursday evening.

UNDER-9s: Well done to our under-9s who played away to Fossa last Tuesday evening. There was a great effort in the heat! We urge all our players to keep up the hard work.

UNDER-7s: The Cromane under-7s have games coming up over the next two weekends.

They play Foosa this Sunday and Dr Crokes the following Saturday (June 17) It was great to see so many togged out along with their trainers Eamon

O’Connor, John Kelly, Saoirse Harkin, and John Breen.

They have additional games against Fossa and Dr Crokes in the coming weeks.

Camp Notes

Brigid O'Connor

OBITUARY A dark cloud hung over our community in the past weeks, as we all mourned the loss of a much loved young woman. Neasa Ní Mhóráin passed away on 22nd May at her home in Baile an Cnochain, Camp.

Her funeral was one of the biggest seen in the village for a long time, hundreds of people came to pay their respects to Neasa and to the Ó Móráin and Cantillon families at their home and again at Neasa's funeral Mass

Donncadh, Neasa's brother, paid a beautiful family tribute to his sister from the Altar.

Caoin, Cneasta, loved by all her family and everybody who knew her, Neasa was a very special person. She was ambitious and conscientious too, a Montessori teacher, dedicated to her profession. Neasa accomplished many accolades in her chosen career, an MA in Montessori, Diploma in Accounting and Computing as well she was continuously training and keeping abreast of new developments in Childcare Education. Neasa loved children and her own nieces and nephews loved her dearly. She was an animal lover and among the symbols brought to the Altar was her dog Bran’s collar. He was her constant companion on the beach and everywhere she went on her walks. Neasa was artistic and a lovely musician and singer. Fr. Michael Moynihan, principal celebrant at the concelebrated Requiem Mass in St. Mary's Church recalled Neasa playing the Church Organ for Mass and how pleasing to the ear her music was. Fr. Michael said Neasa shared her talents with all of us. That was indeed very true.

The sympathy of the entire community of Camp and beyond is with Neasa's heartbroken family at this time. Neasa, May you rest in peace in your heavenly home. Ni bheidh do leithéid arís ann. Neasa is survived by her parents Pádraig Ó Móráin and Mary Uí Mhóráin (nee Cantillon) brothers, Eoin, Cian, Donnchadh and Mícheal. Sisters in law Caroline, Mary and Stephanie, nephews Rian, Óisín and Xavier, nieces Ella, Róisín, Clodagh and Mae, uncles Séan, Bob and John, aunts Máire, Bríd, Íde, Margaret and Bernie, cousins and extended family and friends.

Dora Smith (née Fitzgerald), born 24th June 1943, Aughacasla, Castlegregory died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on 24th of May. Predeceased by her children Eileen and Patrick. Survived by her husband Patrick. Sadly missed by her children; Mary, Patricia, Kathleen, Maurice, Hannahmai, Martin, Rosemary, Lucy, Cyril, Derek, Christopher, and Jeffery. Fondly remembered by her sisters Monica and Eileen, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, relatives, neighbours and many friends. Dora was a lovely lady, very popular with everybody in the locality. Among the symbols brought to the Altar at her requiem Mass was a deck of cards, Dora loved her game of 31 Above all Dora was a devoted mother, her children, grandchildren and Great grandchildren and all her family was everything to her. She will be sadly missed. Sympathy is extended

to all her family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis. Rest In Peace, Dora.

WEDDING Congratulations to Michelle Fitzgerald, The Junction Bar, Camp and Andrew Reynolds of Dublin who were married on Friday last at St. Mary's Church, Camp. Afterwards family and friends joined the happy couple in the Ballyseede Castle Hotel, Tralee where a wonderful wedding celebration was enjoyed by all. Michelle and Andrew came home from Perth for their wedding and are returning to reside in Perth in Western Australia. Michelle and Andrew, May you enjoy great happiness and countless blessings and may lady luck always shine upon the two of you. Go n-eirí an t-ádh libh go deo.

JOYCEAN CONNECTION It will be of interest to those of us who greatly admire the writings of James Joyce, to know that Andrew Reynolds is a grand nephew of James Joyce. James Joyce is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century and author of Ulysses, a literary masterpiece of our times.

CUP FINAL U-13 Girls Shield Cup Final Camp Juniors 3 Castleisland 1

Our girls finished up their competitive season in real style with a mighty win over a gallant Castleisland side. Played in the superb St Brendan's Park Astroturf in Tralee, co captains Meabh Kennedy and Aoibhinn O Callaghan won the toss and elected to play into a tricky breeze.

Castleisland came at us straight away but with our defence standing firm, ably assisted by our confident keeper Orla Curran who played her best game for Camp being consistently alert to the danger.

In the 16th minute, Naoimh O Callaghan put the speedy Alison Bartley away up the right wing where she cleverly teed up Aoibhinn O'Callaghan for a superb strike from the edge of the box high into the net. Orla saved well as Ella Wallace, Muireann Mehigan, Lia Sheehy and Caoimhe Ni Churràin defended tigerishly.

Castleisland drove on and were rewarded with a fine goal in the 24th minute.

Heads didn't drop though and Maria Keane, Niamh Murphy, Roisìn McCarthy, and Ellie Fitzgerald all rolled up their sleeves as we got in at half time 1-1.

A few little alterations to the team and fresh legs in Eve O Sullivan, Ellie Maunsell, Annie O'Brien and Lily Falvey saw us start the second half on the front foot. Up stepped Meabh Kennedy who thundered into the game and on the half volley netted with great technique.

The girls grew in confidence and three quarters way through Aoibhinn pressurised the defence and rattled the net for the insurance goal to make it 3-1 to Camp. A great way to end the season.

Orla was superb in goals. Ella and Annie with great interceptions along Niamh M and Caoimhe were tenacious marking the tricky Castleisland wingers. They were ably assisted by the no nonsense central defenders Lia and Muireann who showed no fear with some mighty tackling and blocks.

Alison, Ellie F and Eve constantly gave us great width and weren't afraid to track back. Roisìn clocked up huge mileage and picked some clever passes. Niamh O C's excellent reading of the game and her trademark long throws were a constant source of danger to Castleisland.

Upfront Maria led the line brilliantly and along with Ellie M and Lily F never let the Castleisland defense settle.

Co captains Meabh 1 goal and Aoibhinn 2 goals were constantly looking to test the keeper and played captain's parts in Camps victory.

Two other girls Tara Laide and Meseret O Brien, whilst not playing tonight have been superb for Camp Juniors throughout a long season especially in defence where they have been rock solid .

Aoibhinn was named player of the match.

PILATES The 6 weeks summer season of Pilates begins Tuesday, 6th June at 6.30 p.m. Intermediate 7.30 p.m. Beginners at Camp Community Hall. Booking required. Contact Marie on 087 744 5115.

It’s All In The Mind

The three axioms of mindfulness

There is a truth that we can all relate to in the old adage The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Human nature is intrinsically good : the vast majority of us just want to be happy and wish to do no harm. And yet, as human beings, we do cause harm and experience suffering at an individual and global level. Why is the good intention not enough? What’s missing?

So much of the time we are on automatic pilot; life just kind of happens. The monkey mind, constantly distracted by shiny new objects, restless, confused, chattering away…if only I had this or… if only that happened, then I could be happy! Catapulted from one thought to the next, limited by fear and uncertainty we can find ourselves making unconscious choices we never intended to make, and we wonder how we ended up where we are :the prevailing feeling that life is happening to us rather than for us. So often, we miss out on the infinite potential and awesome mystery of simply being alive.

There is no blueprint that says life has to be this way : we are free to forge our own path, no matter what our circumstances are.

Being mindful can give us a clear map to work with. Shapiro et al clearly identify the three axioms of mindfulness ; intention, attention and attitude. The three work together in a dynamic way to create a state of mindfulness. Let’s take them one by one.

Intention

We need to know why we are doing what we are doing. What is our motivation?

This is not about achieving goals or getting to a certain destination, rather it’s about knowing the direction I want to head. In John Kabat Zinn’s words, your intention sets the stage for what is possible. We simply set the heart’s compass towards good. Our intention reminds us what is most important.

We will drift off course, time and again- that is human- but once we have a clear intention we can always find our way back.

However, (referring back to the opening line) intention alone is not enough. If we listen to our thoughts we can end up going down all kinds of rabbit holeswe are targeted and manipulated by so many different outside influences, our mind is. at best, unreliable and we can be so hard on ourselves and others. ‘ My mind is a bad neighbourhood that I try not to go into alone’(Ann Le Mott). Life is a minefield, full of unexpected triggers -one thing leads to another, we get defensive, then judgemental, critical, fear sparks anger, then hatred or despair and we get stuck in a loop of reactivity. And much of this happens without us even being aware.

So we need to pay attention.

Attention

Being mindful means paying attention , on purpose, in the present moment , without judgement or commentary so that we notice what is actually happening right now. To do this we need to pause and drop into the body. The body is the entry point to the present moment. While the mind swings to and fro from the future to the past, the body is always right here in the present : Everything we do ,we do through the body (Walt Whitman).

We can train ourselves to focus and steady our attention, to listen to and trust the wisdom of the body. Practising mindfulness is really about getting to know your own body - becoming familiar with it so that body and mind become a cohesive whole. We steady our attention by coming to stillness, allowing our thoughts to take a back seat: we focus on the body and get an accurate reading of how we are actually feeling and what lies beneath that feeling. The more we do this the better we get at it.

Attitude

We do not observe our physical, mental and emotional state with a cool, detached indifference. How you pay attention is important - you might not always like what is happening but can you be present with it, with a quality of friendly curiosity. Can you gently hold the fear or pain or sadness or whatever arises with trust and kindness- be interested in it, make space for it - simply llowing what is already here.

Sometimes awful things happen and sometimes we feel utterly devastatednothing can change that. But ignoring or pushing it away is counter productive, there is nowhere for it to go - the wound will simply lodge deeper into the psyche. When we are completely overwhelmed by suffering we lose perspective and we lose our capacity for resilience.

By cultivating an attitude of openness and compassion- even though we are not getting rid of whatever we are experiencing - we can loosen the grip of fear or jealousy or anger, ease the tension of pain and heartache. What we practise becomes stronger!

When we find a place of ease and acceptance in the body, we can trust the heart to guide us in our intention.

Mindfulness is not a panacea to cure all ills. But when our intention, attention and attitude are consciously aligned, we are in a much better place to make our own choices, free from reactivity, external pressures and misguided agendas.

Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom - Victor E. Frankl

Oscail an Scoil!

le Colm Ó Snodaigh

foilsithe ag Coiscéim

‘Tháinig an scéal aniar aduaidh ar mhuintir

Dhún Chaoin i samhradh 1970: go raibh a scoil le dúnadh. Bhí sé mar pholasaí ag an Roinn Oideachais le tamall scoileanna beaga tuaithe a dhúnadh, agus is iomaí pobal a chaill a scoil dá bharr. Scoil Ghaeltachta a bhí i nDún Chaoin, agus oidhreacht na mblianta beo sa cheantar fós, ach ba bheag an scéal é sin le maorlathas an stáit.

Níor ghlac an pobal leis an gcinneadh, áfach, agus eagraíodh feachtas áitiúil agus náisiúnta ina choinne. Agus cé go raibh daoine móra de lucht polaitíochta, stáit agus eaglaise ina gcoinne, d’oscail muintir Dhún Chaoin an scoil go mídhleathach, ag scaipeadh an scéil, ag eagrú cruinnithe agus mórshiúlta. Ba ghearr go raibh an feachtas ina chuid d’agóidíocht na linne.’- Coiscéim

Agus d’ath-oscail an rialtas an scoil i 1973, sin leathchéad bliain ó shoin agus an scoil ag dul ó neart go neart ó shoin.

Seo cursíos soiléir, spreagúil ar an bhfeachtas fíor-thábhachtach seo i stair Chorca Dhuibhne agus i stair an oideachais in Éirinn.

Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Chuir an aimsir bhreá faobhar fés na feirmeoirí go mbíonn sadhlas acu agus caoire le bearradh, cé go bhfuil san beagán lua. Oíche Dé Sathairn bhí ceo throm i scata áiteanna sa cheantar a thug deoch don bhféar agus gach fásra. Ní raibh le déanamh ach an féar a bhaint agus na baiclí a tharrac dtí an láthair a bheadh roghnaithe mar a mbeadh tarrac ar bhia ag ba agus caoire. Cuimhníotar nuair a deinti cocaí beaga nó grasairí sa ghort don bhféar agus súil go mbeadh cupla lá brea sara dtarracófai isteach ‘on gharraí an féar. Dá mbeadh paistí úr fliuch anseo agus ansúd théitheodh an coca. Ní bheadh aon rogha ansan ach fanacht le cúpla lá brea, go leagfai an coca agus leataí amach le triomú sara ndéanfaí coca aris dó. Is minic go mbeadh snas ar chuid don bhféar a dhéanfadh stoc breoite dá dtabharfaí dóibh é, scata ba ná íosfadh ach bhainfeadh na ba ocracha greamaí dhó a dhéanfadh diobháil dóibh. Ní mar sin atá anois agus beidh sadhlas maith agus féar maith ag lucht féir, tá súil agam.

Figúirí agus eolas

Chuir na figiúirí a fuaireamar ón bPríomh Oifig Staidrimh fé dhaonra iontas ar scata. Ceann dos na sonraí a cuireadh i láthair ná go raibh titim do 180,000 ar an líon Caitliceach sa Phoblacht. Sin é an toradh a eascair as a deineadh 2016. Tá an daonra sa Phoblacht anois 5.15 milliún ná raibh a leithéid do dhaonra againn le 171 bliain. Tá scata daoine ón iasacht buailte chugainn san idirlinn. Tá 200,020 gafa chugainn thar sáile le sé bliana. Tá milliún duine anseo a saolaíodh lasmuigh don dtír nó duine as gach cúigear.

Tá 736, 210, duine a dúirt ná raibh aon chreideamh acu agus 3.5 milliún Caitiliceach sa tír agus 87, 000 Muslamach. Tá ardú mór tagaithe ar an líon daoine atá tagtha thar lear chugainn. Tá 1, 800 Jedí in Éirinn! Tá, deirtear, Gaolainn ag breis agus leath dhaonra Chiarraí.

An bhfuil an tarraingreacht fiaraithe a dúirt go gcaillfeadh Éirinn a creideamh agus ná aithneodh scata do chlanna cérbh díobh iad agus gan aithne ag mhuirinn ar a chéile. Ní mise a chúm, ach cad a mheasann tusa?

Sport

Faid is táimid ag cur síos ar chibeal an deire seachtaine seo is fiú súil a chaitheamh siar ar an ndeire seachtaine roimhis seo. Bhí leath mhíorúiltí ina raibh fóirne cothrom. Múineacháin agus Doire, Bleá Cliath agus Roscommán agus san iomáint Gaillimh agus Bleá Cliath. Dhá leath mhíorúilt eile na go mbuaidh iománaithe Loch Garman ar Chill Chainnigh agus go mbuaidh Port Láirge ar Thiobrad Árann. Cé déarfadh é. Gan amhras bhí criothán agus lagachar coirp ag bagairt lucht tacaíochta Chorcaí agus Luimní agus níorbh ionadh san. Bhuaidh Luimneach le pointe amháin ar Chorcaigh. Ard chluiche. B’iad na gaiscígh ab fhearr a bhí ag Luimneach ná Kyle Hayes, Byrnes Hannon, Flanagan agus Dillane. Bhí Horgan, Fitzgibbon, Cahalane agus Harnedy tofa ag Corcaigh. Bhí an triocha imreoir ar fheabhas. Buailfidh Luimneach leis an gClár anois lena dheimhniú cén fhoireann go mbeidh tosaíocht aici i gcás an lion cluichí a bheidh le imirt ag an dá fhoireann agus iad sa tóir ar chorn Mhac Cárrthaigh. Siad an Clár an t-aon fhoireann a bhuaidh ar Luimneach le cheithre nó cúig bliana. Cioca foireann a bhuafaidh craobh na Mumhan?

Sea tá dhá dhea scéala ag Ciarraí ón ndeire seachtaine seo caite, bhuadar ar Mhionúir Chorcaí i gcraobh na Mumhan. Bhuaidh Corcaigh ortha trí seachtaine ó shin ach dar liom go ndúirt a dtraenalaí Quinlivan go raibh sé go láidir don dtuairim go mbeadh an bhua acu. Bhí an bheirt seo againne an báideoir, Hórach ón nDaingean agus an Cuinneach óg go maith.

Sea bhí sinsir Chorcaí níos fearr ná mar a measadh ach bhí an foireann seo againne beagán níos fearr. Bhí Seán Ó Sé go diail sa chéad leath agus dhein Paul Geaney gaiscí chomh maith. Fear ‘sea Paul atá cruaidh láidir agus go maith chun báidí a ghnóthú. Bhí an bheirt dearthár Chlúmhánach ó Fhossa tofa.Tháinigh Barra Ó Súilleabhain chun páirce déanach sa chluiche. Tús maith An chéad chluiche eile a bheidh ag na sinsir ná le Lú a chaill le poinnte amháin ina gcluiche le Maigh Eo.

Nóta

N’fheadar an púca a éalaigh ar an script deireannach a bhí agam san Iris seo, mar bhí 30,000 tigh íslithe dtí 3,000 agus colcheathar déanta do dheartháir Phaul Geaney. Ní dóigh liom go bhfuil púcai an- líonmhar anseo fós ach bíonn siad ins gach áit, a deirtear.

Comóradh

Bhí an- dheire seachtaine acu siúd a fhreastail ar Chomóradh Caoga Bliain ar ath-oscailt Scoil Dhún Chaoin ón Aoine go Domhnach. Bhí togha an cheoil is na n-amhrán agus cabaireacht fén abhar ón stáitse mar a raibh Sean mac Síthigh, an craoltoir ag cur na gceisteanna. Bhí an aimsir fé don ócaid a eagraidh Malachaí Mac Amhlaoimh agus a chairde. Deich as deich.

Bás

Fuair Áine Ní Shé Uí Londra ó Mhám na Gaoithe agus Márthain bás le déanaí. Méala mór a bás dá céile Seán agus a deirfiur Peig a gaolta agus a cáirde. Bean an- chairdiúil a bhíodh an- dheas le páistí b’ea Áine. Bhíomair go léir an-mhór léi agus an saol mór.

Bhí aithne aici ar gach caora agus uan a bhí acu agus nuair a bhí ba acu d’fhágadh bainne amuigh do aon chat go mbeadh tart air.

Fuair Neasa Ní Mhóráin ó Bhaile ‘n Chnocáin, An Cam, bás le déanaí. Méala mór a bás dá tuistí Pádraig agus Máire, deartháracha, Cian, Mícheál, Eoin agus Doncha, a gaolta agus cairde. Ba neacht í le Bríd ní Mhóráin an file aitheanta agus údar cumasach. Go soillsí soillse na bFlaitheas ar a hanam óg.
