Thrills and Traditions: Ventry Regatta

Evan

O'Shea

Ventry regatta kicks off this year on the 8th of July with a quiz in Quinn’s pub, followed by a day of naomhóg racing and much more on the 9th of July.

Ventry Regatta is one of Ireland’s oldest regattas and is renowned in song and story, particularly in the classic writings of the great Blasket Island authors. People come from near and far, many on holidays and end up in the middle of the festivities on the beach and around the village.

There are many different events and races for all ages, the regatta itself features races from under 12’s up to seniors, as it’s important to put an emphasis on the youth to encourage them to keep up the sport and maintain the crews of the future.

The competition is fierce, with seasoned sailors and novices alike showcasing their skills and tactics on the water. The combination of a demanding course and unpredictable weather conditions makes the Ventry Regatta a true test of skill, spectators gather along the pier and the beach, cheering on their favourite crews as their boats glide through the water.

For those not familiar with the regatta you may notice the boats used in the race have an interesting build. A currach is a type of traditional boat with a wooden frame, over which animal skins were once stretched, though now canvas is more usual. The construction and design of the currach are unique to the west coasts of Ireland, where they are referred to as a naomhóg.

Naomhógs were used by the people of the Blasket Islands as fishing vessels, as well as for transport to the mainland. They were easy to handle and manoeuvre. Fishermen could get nearer to the rocky shoreline than in other types of fishing boat. Some people believe that currachs first came to the Dingle Peninsula in the early 19th century. Currachs survive now as racing boats, often holding their own against much more modern types.

The naomhóg races are not just about speed and strength; they are a celebration of tradition and heritage. The participants pay homage to the generations of fishermen and sailors who relied on these boats for their livelihoods. The regatta serves as a reminder of the rich maritime history of the Dingle Peninsula and the resilience of its people. Beyond the races, there is an array of activities to captivate both young and old. The beach becomes a canvas for imaginative minds as the sand castle competition takes centre stage, or (beach art) if you're shy of being seen with a bucket and spade. You can be sure to see a skyscraper or two on the beach floor.

The Feis Rince, a traditional Irish dance competition, takes centre stage at the Ventry Regatta, enchanting spectators with its elegance and grace. Dancers dressed in colorful costumes, with Celtic designs, take to the stage, captivating the audience with their precise footwork and energetic movements. The Feis provides a platform for both young and seasoned dancers to showcase their talent and passion for this beloved practice.

While Irish dancing mesmerizes the crowds, the Horse Shoe Throwing competition offers a different kind of excitement and challenge. This age-old contest tests the competitors' ability to throw horseshoes with accuracy, aiming to circle a stake planted in the ground.

And for anyone who thinks they should be on the Kerry team, there is a long kick competition to win a signed football.

So, whether you find yourself tapping your feet to the rhythm of the Feis or trying your hand at the Horse Shoe Throwing competition, the Ventry Regatta promises an unforgettable experience that celebrates the spirit of Kerry.

Beat the Heat: Top Tips for Staying Hydrated During the Summer

As the sun shines brightly and temperatures rise during the summer months, it's crucial to prioritize hydration to ensure your well-being and maintain optimum energy levels. Even though we have been under a rain cloud for the last week or so, temperatures remain high and hydration levels in the body may be under pressure. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even more severe complications like heatstroke. By adopting a proactive approach to hydration, you can beat the heat and enjoy the summer to its fullest. Let’s dive in and explore a range of effective strategies to help you stay hydrated and healthy during the “scorching” summer months. While you might be a little sceptical considering the recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, some of you are preparing to go to sunnier climes so this article is relevant for all of us.

1. Drink Sufficient Water: Water is the elixir of life, and it becomes even more critical during hot and muggy summer days. The general recommendation is to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, but in high temperatures, you may need more. Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times and make a conscious effort to sip water throughout the day. Set reminders on your phone or computer if necessary. By maintaining a consistent intake of water, you can prevent dehydration and support your body's essential functions.

2. Embrace Hydrating Foods: Incorporating water-rich foods into your diet is an effective way to boost hydration levels. Fruits such as watermelon, strawberries, oranges, and grapefruit are not only delicious in Summer but also have high water content. Nature always provides for us with what we need when we need it so do keep an eye on the natural world for the cues, most evident in seasonal produce. Snacking on cucumber slices and radishes or including these delicious ingredients in salads can also contribute to your overall hydration. Additionally, foods like celery, lettuce, and tomatoes can provide an extra hydration boost. By incorporating these hydrating foods into your daily meals and snacks, you can stay nourished and avoid wilting in the Summer sun.

3. Prioritize Electrolyte Balance: Sweating in hot weather leads to the loss of essential minerals called electrolytes. Maintaining a proper balance of electrolytes is crucial for all bodily functions. Symptoms of an electrolyte deficiency include headaches, dizziness, confusion, cognitive difficulties, anxiety, agitation, nausea, diarrhoea and cramps to name a few. Alongside drinking water, replenish electrolytes by consuming foods rich in potassium, magnesium, chloride and sodium. Bananas, avocados, yogurt, and coconut water are excellent choices. Alternatively, you can opt for sports electrolyte supplement which can be added to your drinking water. Some sports drinks also provide electrolyte replacements. However, be mindful of the sugar content in these beverages and prioritize pure water as your primary source of hydration.

4. Time Your Fluid Intake: To ensure adequate hydration, it's essential to distribute your fluid intake evenly throughout the day. Waiting until you're thirsty to drink water is not ideal, as thirst is a sign that you are already deydrated. Set reminders or create a schedule to remind yourself to drink water regularly. Consider carrying a water bottle with you wherever you

go to ensure easy access to hydration at all times. By making hydration a habit and maintaining a consistent fluid intake, you can stay adequately hydrated throughout the day.

5. Be Mindful of Alcohol and Caffeine Consumption: While enjoying a cold beer or a refreshing iced coffee may be tempting during summer, it's important to be mindful of their diuretic effects. I hate to be the party pooper but alcohol and caffeine can increase urine production and potentially lead to dehydration. If you choose to consume these beverages, balance them with an increased intake of water to counteract their dehydrating effects. Opt for lighter alcoholic beverages and consider diluting them with water or consuming them in moderation. Similarly, keep an eye on your caffeine intake and balance it with sufficient water consumption to maintain hydration.

6. Seek Shade and Dress Appropriately: Direct exposure to the sun can lead to excessive sweating and accelerated fluid loss. Whenever possible, seek shade or create shade with the help of umbrellas, hats, or sunglasses. Wearing loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton, silk and linen, allows your skin to breathe and helps regulate body temperature. Light-colored clothing can also help reflect sunlight, reducing heat absorption. By taking these precautions, you can minimize the risk of overheating and dehydration when spending time outdoors during the summer months.

7. Monitor Urine Colour: Monitoring the colour of your urine is a simple yet effective way to gauge your hydration status. Clear or pale-yellow urine indicates good hydration, while darker urine suggests a need to drink more fluids. Throughout the day, take a peek at your pee and make adjustments to your water intake accordingly.

Staying hydrated during the summer months is essential for your overall well-being you’re your enjoyment of the season. By adopting these strategies, including drinking sufficient water, incorporating hydrating foods, balancing electrolytes, timing your fluid intake, being mindful of alcohol and caffeine consumption, seeking shade, and monitoring urine colour, you can proactively combat dehydration and its associated risks. Stay cool and enjoy the rest of the sunshine.

ANIMAL WELFARE GRANTS PROGRAMME 2023

Applications are open for animal welfare charities in Ireland who wish to be considered for funding for the provision of services in 2024. This is a small but important part of the Agri-Community sector who do important work protecting and caring for surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals. They also play a pivotal role in educating the public in relation to responsible pet ownership and animal welfare in general. Further details, including the Application Form, are available through the Department of Agriculture website or email: welfaregrants@agriculture.gov.ie . All applicants must be registered with the Charities Regulator and be in existence for over two years. The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 21st Jul 2023.

INVESTMENT AID HORTICULTURE SECTOREXTENDED

A short extension to the 2023 Scheme of Investment Aid for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector has been announced and will close at 5pm on Friday 07 July 2023. It had been due to close at 5pm this Friday 30 June.

This Scheme is intended to assist in the development of the horticulture sector, including beekeeping, by grant aiding capital investments in specialised plant and equipment including renewable energy, as well as technology adoption specific to commercial horticulture production.

Details of the scheme have been notified to the European Commission in accordance with the European Union Guidelines for State aid and the granting of approval of aid for investments under the Scheme will only be granted after approval by the European Commission in accordance with the Commission Decision on the measure.

Application Forms and the Scheme Terms & Conditions are available on the Department's website . Completed Application forms and supporting documentation must be submitted in hardcopy to the following address before 5 pm Friday 07 July 2023, and submitted to Horticulture Grant Scheme Section, Horticulture & Plant Health Division, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Administration Building, Backweston Campus, Young’s Cross, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, W23 X3PH.

NATIONAL APICULTURE PROGRAMME DEADLINE EXTENDED

Another extension has been made, this time to the National Apiculture Programme and will now close for applications on Friday 14 July 2023. It had been due to close on Friday 30 June. The National Apiculture Programme 2023-2027 is jointly funded by the European Union and the National Exchequer under Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027.

The aims of the programme are to:

• provide technical assistance to beekeepers,

• combat beehive invaders and diseases, particularly varroasis,

• co-operate with specialist bodies for the implementation of applied research programmes in the field of beekeeping and apiculture products. All suitable bodies that can demonstrate the necessary research capabilities, including Universities, Institutes of Technology and Teagasc, are eligible to submit proposals. Full details on the call for proposals for the NAP 20232027 can be found on the Department's website. Queries relating to the National Apiculture Programme 2023-2027 can be emailed to beekeeping@ agriculture.gov.ie

Let us hope that with all these extensions, the Department of Agriculture extends the deadline for submitting scorecards, so that all farmers will be able to qualify for payments under ACRES.

BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME REFUND TO 95,000 FARMERS

We all remember the BPS that ended in 2022. The good news is that there will be a small refund payment to certain farmers who were under-paid during that final year of the scheme. This will amount to a total of €15.6 million Basic Payment Scheme Refund to 95,000 farmers. This money, deducted from 2021 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments in line with EU regulations under the Financial Discipline mechanism, is now being reimbursed to farmers.

The financial discipline mechanism is part of the annual budgetary procedure of the European Union. The financial discipline mechanism involves a monetary deduction (1.65% for the 2021 reduction) from some direct payments for the provision of a financial Crisis Reserve for the European Union. The Crisis Reserve is intended to provide additional support for the agricultural sector in the case of major crises affecting agricultural production or distribution. If the Crisis Reserve is not activated in the financial year, or it is not fully utilised, the unused balance is refunded to farmers in the subsequent financial year.

NATURE SITES APPEALS BOARD TRANSPARENCY CONCERNS

Many are questioning a “lack of transparency” around an appeals board for special areas of conservation (SACs) which allows landowners to object to protections for sites across the country. The (little known) Designated Areas Appeals Advisory Board (DAAAB) has not had a formal hearing to decide on categorising a site in almost two years. However, it has had almost 100 “informal” meetings with objectors in recent years over adding special legislative protections around the sensitive habitats and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage needs to clarify what took place in the informal discussions. There needs to be full transparency about this. If anyone puts in a planning objection that’s publicly available for everyone to see. This all the more concerning given this week’s ruling by the Eurpean Court of Justice that Ireland has failed to protect hundreds of these sites across the country. The court found that the Irish government had failed to designate Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in certain areas and had failed to comply with an EU obligation to establish badly needed conservation measures for sensitive habitats across a range of sites. While a large amount of sites have been registered to date – some 250 in the past two years – some high-profile areas yet to be designated SACs include Killarney National Park and parts of the Burren. The government has insisted all sites will have statutory protection by the end of the year as locations of significance that support flora and fauna.

The DAAAB appeals board is a non-statutory body which makes the recommendations to the National Parks and Wildlife Service for SACs and natural heritage areas, which can be home to certain species.

It held formal hearings for a total of 19 appeals from landowners between 2017 and 2021 but has held not formal hearings since then.

However, the past six years have seen “approximately 90 informal appeals considered” according to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The hearings are made up of representatives forming two separate panels representing environmentalists and farmers. Their meetings are chaired by a barrister. One panel is comprised of landowners, users and producers, and is drawn from the Irish Farmers Association, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association and the Irish Business and Employers Confederation. A separate pillar is made up of representatives from conservation groups and members are drawn from environmental groups, the department said.

According to the National Parks and Wildlife Service guidelines for the DAAAB, the board will only consider formal hearings after an “opportunity to have the matters at issue dealt with on an informal basis” with the objector. The process will be moved to a formal footing if it has not resulted in a “satisfactory conclusion from the objector’s point of view.

There seems to be a level of secrecy not acceptable in such a public body. A big concern would be whether there is horse-trading taking place, especially at the informal meetings which no records are being released for. For example: if you’re a farmer in one area and you’d like to see how other people were successful in appealing designations, you can’t get an idea of that at all.

The department was recently asked what were the outcomes of the 90 informal discussions and whether the full board oversees the informal appeal. It had not responded at the time of publication.

EPA IDENTIFIES AREAS WHERE NITRATES DEROGATION LIMIT MUST FALL

The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has identified the areas where farms will likely have to reduce their application rate of organic manure nitrogen from 250kg N/ha to 220kg N/ha following a review of water quality required under the Nitrates Directive. In a new report the EPA said that based on the specified water quality criteria set out by the European Commission, when it granted Ireland’s Nitrates Derogation for 2022-2025, “over 44,000 km of land is identified as requiring additional measures to

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

protect water quality.

The EPA stated in the report: “The commission requires that by January 1 , 2024, derogation farms located within this area reduce their application rate of manure from a maximum of 250 kg nitrogen/ha per year to 220 kg nitrogen/ha per year.”

When the commission granted Ireland a nitrates derogation it was subject to a number of conditions including an interim water quality review which had to be carried out this year. In the EPA report – Water Quality Monitoring Report on Nitrogen and Phosphorus Concentrations in Irish waters 2022 – the agency outlined that there has been an increase in nutrient concentrations since 2012/2013 in most water types. Nitrate concentrations were higher in 2022 than in 2021. The EPA also said in the report that the main water quality issues from farming activities are “loss of excess nutrients and sediment to water. It specifically detailed that nitrate is “highly mobile in the landscape” while phosphorus is much more readily lost from poorly draining soils” and that excess ammonium may “also be a problem in some water bodies.

The EPA has developed a Targeting Agricultural Measures map to identify the types of “agricultural issues that require targeted measures. According to them the aim of the interim water quality review, required by the commission, was to identify waterbodies that are polluted, at risk of pollution or showing worsening trends as a result of agricultural activities.

Anyone who hasn’t received their energy questionnaire please get in touch with ann@dinglehub.com.

Any businesses who works in tourism and hospitality on the Dingle peninsula is welcome to join our Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) at any time. There’s no cost to join. Corca Dhuibhne has been chosen for this pilot SEC is supported by Fáilte Ireland, Údaras na Gaeltachta and Kerry County Council. This project feeds into the Dingle Peninsula 2030 plan. Being part of this group will allow us all to share knowledge peer to peer, reduce carbon footprint and group buying schemes. We are gathering information at the moment and asking businesses to fill out their energy questionnaire. Having this information will help us create an Energy Master Plan and give us the information we need to make independent suggestions to your business. Getting all the information now means we will have the Energy Master Plan results in Winter 2023 during the off-season.

If anyone is having difficulty with their questionnaire, please get in touch and we can help you fill it out. If you have your electricity bill from Jan 2022 and Jan 2023 ready, as well as your gas or oil bill for the year before you sit down to fill out the questionnaire.

Keep an eye out on RTE 2 on Friday 21st July 8:30pm. John Torode’s Ireland is a sixpart TV series following the MasterChef judge as he tours, tastes and cooks his way around Ireland. The fourth episode of the series, Friday 21st will include local businesses, Cáis food truck, Solas Tapes and Wine Bar, The Fishbox, Bácús Bakery and Murphy’s Ice cream.

1901 Census Miscellany in West Kerry

The 1901 Census was recorded on Sunday, March 31. In this issue we’ll continue to look at some of the names, mistakes, mysteries and mischief found in both the hand-written and printed forms.

Masters. There were many masters recorded in the Census in West Kerry and none of them were involved in teaching. There were Master shoemakers, Master carpenters, Master bakers, Master coopers, Master tailors, Master masons and Master boot makers. (Master of the Workhouse doesn’t count).

James Eaton, 42, was a Master boot maker and a widower who lived in Holy Ground. He had five young children aged from 11 down to 3 which meant his wife had died quite recently. The name Eaton was/is common in England. It’s a locational name and there are many places named Eaton.

Then there was a Master Mariner and this entry in 1901 is the most mysterious in all of the West Kerry Census records. There was an unnamed ship in Dingle harbour on Census night and, according to the hand-written form (Form A) there were four men on board.

They were, Timothy O’Driscoll, 36 and married, who was a ‘Master Mariner’ from Baltimore in Cork. Jeremiah McCarthy, 24 and single, was the ship’s ‘Mate’ and a native of Bantry. Sam Hingston, 22 and single, was a crewman from Baltimore and Dan Driscoll, 20 and single, a crewman from Crookhaven.

So what’s the big mystery? When the hand-written information was transcribed to print many years later there were four other men named as having been on board the vessel – two O’Sheas, a Warren and another Timothy Driscoll.

Even if those latter four had been ashore how did their names appear on the printed form? The probable answer is that the men were ashore and the enumerator, Constable James Graham, put their details on paper and attached it to the form to be added later. There was no other similar occurrence recorded, or discovered, in West Kerry where names were added to the original forms.

Wilkie. Margaret Wilkie, aged 7, lived with her widowed grandmother Johanna Ferris, 60, in Cloosguire, Castlegregory who was a domestic servant. Little Margaret was born in Kerry but there is no mention of her parents on the Census form.

The surname Wilkie is rare in Ireland and some sources say it may be German or Scottish – quite a cultural choice there. Scottish sounds more likely and it may be an old pet name for William which became a surname. Anyway, if you look up famous people named Wilkie many of them are Scottish.

There is no sign of Margaret in the 1911 Census, in fact there is no record of the townland Cloosguire in 1911 – where did it go? There is a Johanna Ferris listed as living in Castlegregory town - then aged 72.

Radcliff. Radcliff Roe, 40, was the name of a Church of Ireland curate for Dingle parish back in 1901. He was from Mayo while his wife Amy, 27, was from Kilkenny. They had one child, Anna Helen Kathleen aged 8 months and they lived in Cloghane, Ventry.

The name Radcliff is unusual to our ears and most sources contend that

the name means ‘red cliff’ – that was easy. And what about the name ‘Roe’? Here again we have conflict, depending on the consulted source. It could be this, it could be that. It may be from the Irish word ‘Rua’ or red. So now we have Redcliff Red?

There were five visitors named MacGillycuddy in the Roe house on Census night. One of them was Francis Chrite MacGillycuddy (should be Francis Chute). We met him in a previous issue a couple of years back.

He was a Constable Trooper in South Africa during the Boer War (1899 – 1902). He was aged 42, according to British military records. The Constabulary was a military force under the control of the British army. Pensioned. James Graham, 40, mentioned above, was a sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary and lived in Emlagh West, Dingle, with his wife Rosalie, 36. He was from Monaghan and she was from Antrim. They had eight children in 1901. All were born in Kerry and the ages were 10/9/8/7/6/4/2 and 6 months.

By 1911 the family had grown to 13 children with one loss. Sergeant Graham was now 50 and retired on pension which may have been around £100 per annum, according to some sources. If converted to today’s currency it would emerge at around €18,000. With little or no inflation in 1900 it was probably comfortable enough.

Abel. There was a Mahoney family living in house 19 on John Street, Dingle. The head of the household was named Abel (If only his surname had been Kane). Anyway, Abel was 36 and married to Mary, 30. They had three young children.

He was a slater and plasterer but not the only slater on John Street at that time. However, he was the only person recorded in West Kerry with the biblical name of Abel – very rare in Ireland.

Apart from his namesake in the Garden of Eden, the only person named Abel that comes to mind is the Dutchman Abel Tasman. He was recorded as the first European to see New Zealand and van Diemen’s Land – later Tasmania. He died aged 56 in 1659.

What Is Shorinji Kempo?

Pádraig de Cazenove

Thirty three years have passed since the establishment of martial arts classes in Dingle. Shotokan Karate was the style taught for 20 of those years until it was gradually superseded and replaced by Shorinji Kempo, which could be regarded as a kind of promotion. Although about 500 students have taken at least one grading examination, only nine have succeeded in attaining the level of black belt during this time. Of those nine, maybe only one or two are still practicing, so needless to say the benefits of doing the martial arts are only apparent to those who continue training on a life long basis, to a point that it becomes part of one’s way of life. But to continue such a journey for a life time there has to be more than merely making physical movements in a dojo. Here follows an explanation why Shorinji Kempo makes that journey more interesting and enduring. Both Shotokan karate and Shorinji Kempo are Japanese traditional budo (martial way) arts, though similar in some technique they differ considerably in philosophy, ethos and lineage. Karate as an art has unfortunately been tainted by competition like Judo and Taikwondo which have become Olympic sports. Karate is a simple training and focuses a lot on single form repetitive drilling with quite a linear system of technique that lends itself well to competition, even though so much of the available technique seen in the kata are not practiced regularly to any depth in pair form. Shorinji Kempo on the other hand is more circular involving dodging and weaving like boxing with a priority for pair form training and steers a course away from sport. Sport by it’s nature follows rules but within Shorinji Kempo’s ethos of self defence, techniques that do not actually cause death or permanent injury are practiced and many of these techniques would not be allowed in a competition, particularly using pressure points. As well as that, philosophically the desire to win in sports means that there has to be loser and that is not conducive to learning with a spirit of co-operation amongst participants while training. Shorinji Kempo has a very wide and holistic syllabus that includes healing with shiatsu, resuscitation, meditation, staff fighting, pressure point application for both hurting and healing, and philosophy; but mostly the training is in the technical aspects that are both hard and soft. Hard- to defend and counter with kicks and punches- soft to defend against grabs using escapes, wrist reverses and pins. Shorinji Kempo follows an original martial middle way and does not adhere to the extreme training methods to produce power and efficiency of movement to enable someone in theory to kill with one strike (ikken hissatsu). It instead utilises methods based on scientific principles with a minimum power to block, unbalance and disable an opponent. Every journey begins with a single step so it is never too late to start learning something new, interesting and rewarding. To be continued..

Because the ethos of Shorinji Kempo is non profit making, classes are now free for anyone male or female over 13 years of age. Call 087-7735815

Open Gardens Day Tidy towns held an open garden event on Sunday last July 2nd. The Tidy Towns Group are grateful to all the members of the public who supported this event. There were 9 gardens on view and also a miniature garden on a trailer designed by the transition years at the Mean Scoil. The event was organised by Martin Greenwood with help from Bettina Pickering. Many thanks to all the gardeners who participated and to the ticket sellers, Lucy, Ding, Harry and Oliver. It was very well attended, raising much needed funds for tidy towns projects such as planters and flowers for the village. Thanks also to Shanahan's Garden Centre who donated a €50 voucher for the event which was won by Susan Moriarty in the free prize draw.

NEW BUSINESS. The Business Chamber wish to welcome the new business set up in the Ó Catháin Fish Plant at the Wood which opened its doors to the public last weekend.

The name of the outlet is WAVE short for Wild Atlantic Virtual Experience and covers a good portion of the former fish processing factory area. Well worth a visit the experience offers a virtual underwater trip featuring the marine life as well as mobile and static objects like shipwrecks off the coast of Corca Dhuibhne. The exhibition hall includes interesting information on historical shipwrecks and is another must visit Dingle outlet for both locals and visitors. The Wood Fired Pizza Business in the premises is an ideal way to finish off a trip to this great initiative by the Ó Catháin family which also offers free parking to its patrons.

The popular Ó Catháin Fish Shop will remain in business as normal in its existing location.

The Business Chamber also welcome Edwin the new proprietor of the Image And Design Printing Service off John Street and wish him continued success with the business where he has been the front of house personality for many years.

We also wish Richard Smallwood founder and long serving proprietor of the outlet a long, enjoyable and well deserved retirement from the pressures and headaches of business life.

We also wish the best of luck to the Ó Murchú family from Ceann Trá proprietors of the Solar Beo business who hope to create new employment in the county following their partnership deal with American company NanoPV Solar Inc. The initiative involves opening a new manufacturing plant in Tralee turning out high spec solar panels which are in much demand with the emphasis on more use of solar energy at present. Certainly good news to hear of increased employment prospects especially in our own locality.

CENSUS RESULTS. It probably did not come as a great shock to locals who must surely know from everyday life that Dingle now has the oldest population for small towns in Ireland. According to the 2022 Census Results the average age in our town is 44.4 for population category

1,500 to 10,000 which must surely push the authorities to provide facilities to cater for such an ageing population in a small town. Should this trend continue and with few long term employment prospects here at present West Kerry could be a sparsely populated area in the not too distant future. Its time to start planning for a better future for all age groups now!!!!.

flight with GAA Championship fixtures for both ladies and men at all age groups coming almost every weekend and hopefully this success will continue for the rest of the summer. Good luck to all the teams and well done and hard luck especially to the West Kerry lads in the Kerry Minor Team who were narrowly defeated in their All Ireland Semi Final recently.

THANKS. The organisers of both the Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Yacht Race and the Dingle Adventure Race wish to thank the public for the wonderful welcome the participants and supporters received during their recent visits to Corca Dhuibhne. Both events report tremendous success and enjoyment by all involved and especially thank the public for inconveniences of travel and parking for short periods that weekend.

TURBETT'S AMUSEMENTS. We welcome back

the Turbett family and their associates who rolled into town in the last few days in June for their annual visit to The Tracks to a tremendous welcome from their loyal young and not so young supporters. Lets hope the weather will be kind to this great travelling show which heralds the real start of the summer in our town.

Acknowledgement

Dingle sisters Margaret Sheehy and Eilish Creedon wish to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the countless getwell cards, Mass cards, gifts, prayers, candles, phone calls, texts and expressions of concern from friends, neighbours and the community at large resulting from their involvement in a serious road accident in January.

Following an extensive period in hospital the sisters are slowly recovering.

Greek Style Lamb with Mint Yogurt

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

and pepper. Rub all of this over the lamb and let it marinade overnight.

To Cook

Preheat the oven to 160ºC

Put a pan or a casserole pot over a medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and the lamb. Allow it to take on a little colour but be careful not to let it burn.

top it up with a little wine. For the last 30 minutes of cooking, you can remove the lid. This will add some more colour to the dish. At this stage the lamb should be falling apart.

Before serving, mix some sea salt, chopped parsley and zest of a lemon, spread this over the top.

For the mint yogurt, mix the mint leaves with the yogurt.

Slow cooked lamb and mint yogurt, perfect for any summer evening.

Having a few friends or family over?

This is one of those dishes that will leave everyone looking for more. Marinating the lamb, the night before will give plenty of freshness to this dish. The name of this is Lamb Kleftiko and was originally cooked by Greek shepherds in the mountains, but now you will find it served regularly all over Greece.

The fragrance of oregano, rosemary and lemons will leave your kitchen smelling like a Mediterranean kitchen. Cooking this slowing with a little wine will leave the lamb very tender and falling apart. Enjoy this with some spinach, carrot and roast potatoes. I have added a little mint yogurt to drizzle over it to add another layer of freshness.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients

good handful of fresh oregano, chopped finely

2-3 stalks of rosemary, leaves chopped

4-5 cloves of garlic, chopped

2 lemons, juiced and zested

150ml white wine

olive oil

salt and pepper

1.5-2kg lamb shoulder, boned (lamb leg will work fine too, get your butcher to bone it for you)

2 onions, sliced finely

For the Garnish

1 teaspoon sea salt

small bunch of flat parsley, chopped

1 lemon zested

For the Mint Yogurt

4-5 sprigs of mint, leaves removed and chopped

finely

200ml natural yogurt

Method

Mix the oregano, rosemary, garlic, lemon juice, zest, wine together. Put half of it in a small bowl and cover. Keep this for the next day. Us the other half along with a little olive oil and salt

Remove the lamb, turn down the heat and add a little oil. Add the sliced onions, the rest of the garlic, oregano and rosemary. Let this all soften for a few minutes. Add the remaining lemon juice, zest and wine. Cook for a few minutes. Place the lamb on top. Let this cook like this for about 3 hours. Check after each hour to make sure there is some liquid around the lamb, if not

Serve with green salad and a potato salad. Bain taitneamh as!!

Scéalta ó Ionad an Bhlascaoid:

George Thomson

Conall Ó Cíobháin

Bhí tionchar ollmhór ag scoláirí agus mic léinn na Gaeilge ar mhuintir an Bhlascaoid Mhóir, agus ar dhuine acu seo bhí an tOllamh George Thomson.

Rugadh George Thomson i Londain sa bhliain 1903. Bhí suim dhiamhair aige i dteangacha Ceilteacha agus ní fada go raibh sé tógtha leis an nGaelainn. Chas Robin Flower leis in 1923 agus dúirt sé leis faoin Oileán Tiar.

Is i mí Lúnasa na bliana san a thug Thomson a chéad chuairt ar an Oileán. Bhí sé tógtha láithreach leis an gcultúr agus le slí beatha na nOileánach.

The blasket Island people were a community of Kingsfolk. When a stranger came to the island they offered the same hospitality no matter who he might be.

Thuig sé leis an saol crua a bhí ag na daoine.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

There was no shop, no tavern, no post office, no policeman, no doctor,r no priest, the only kind of boat in use is a currach, a canoe of wicker framework and canvas covering. The distance from the mainland is two and a half miles, an easy journey in good weather, but impossible in bad.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

Is é Thomson gan dabht a ghríosaigh Muiris Ó Súilleabháin chun dul ag scríobh. Bhí sé i gceist ag Muiris dul go Meiriceá ach mhol Thomson do fanacht in Éirinn agus dul isteach sna Gardaí, rud a dhein sé. Sa bhliain 1929 bhí Muiris ag gearán le Thomson go raibh na hoícheanta sa gheimhreadh fada agus leadránach is é i mbun dualgais i gConamara. Bhí An tOileánach díreach tagtha amach agus spreag Thomson Muiris chun tabhairt faoin scríbhneoireacht é féin, rud a dhein sé agus foilsíodh Fiche Blian ag Fás in 1933.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Bhí Thomson ina Ollamh le Gréigis i Birmingham idir 1937 agus 1970. Dúirt Thomson leis gur chabhraigh an Ghaelainn go mór leis tuiscint níos fearr a fháil ar chultúr, ar scoláirí agus ar mhór-scríbhneoirí na Gréige.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

I found many similarities between the Irish and Greek people, especially in their poetry, traditions, and sayings and in form of their transmission and survival from generation to generation.

D’fhoghlaim Thomson labhairt na Gaeilge ionas ar deireadh gur dheacair a dhéanamh amach nách as an oileán ar fáisceadh é, bhí sé chómh líofa sin.

Chaith Thomson seal sa Ghaillimh ag múineadh an Ghréigis trí Ghaeilge in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, bhí sé ann idir 1931 agus 1933. Chreid sé i gcónaí go raibh an ceol, an fhilíocht agus an drámaíocht lárnach i saol an duine. Bhí sé ar cheann dos na chéad scoláirí a chonaic go raibh ceangal idir an ceol, an fhilíocht agus an damhsa, thuig se gur úsáid na scríbhneoirí móra ar fad ar nós Shakespeare agus Aeschylus gnáth-theanga na ndaoine agus iad ag scríobh. Chreid Thomson leis go dtóg leithéidí Mozart agus Haydn inspioráid ón gceol tíre. Scríobh Thomson faoi seo ina leabhar The Human Essence.

Bhí ról lárnach ag Thomson i saol mhuinitir an Oiléain agus ní dhéanfar dearúd go deo air.

Tá Ionad an Bhlascaoid i nDún Chaoin ar oscailt idir a 10 ar maidin go 6 trathnóna gach lá, iontráil deiridh 5.15.

The Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin is open from 10 to 6 daily, last admissions 5.15.

Ní dócha go raibh móran i measc lucht tacaíochta na Ríochta a bhí ag súil le bua a bhreith ar Ghaillimh Aontaithe an tseachtain seo caite i dTír Oiléan. Ach mar a tharla, an teip ar éigin, le cúl amháin, ba gheall le bua é i bhfianaise an ladradh a fuair foireann Chiarraí an uair deireanach a bhíodar cois Coiribe.

Go deimhin, d'fheadfadh lucht Pháirc Chnoc an Iolair a mhaíomh nach raibh ach oiread na fríde den mhí-ádh (agus cúpla cinneadh réiteora) idir iad agus an bua éalaitheach a dhéanfadh oíche den scoth as. Gan tracht ar shábháileanna iontacha ag Brendan Clarke, cúlbáire na Gaillimhe. Ach sin cluichí peile duit.

Sin é a dúirt bainisteoir Chiarraí, Billy Dennehy, tar éis an chluiche, agus é an-sásta leis an taispeántas imeartha a bhí curtha ar fáil ag an bhfoireann óg in aghaidh cinnirí na sraithe. Dar leis, ba theist é na torthaí is déanaí ag na leaids, gan ach cúl idir iad agus na foirne ina gcoinne, foirne a bhfuil taithí na mblianta acu sa tSraith.

Single female professional looking to rent accommodation long-term in West Kerry. Please contact 087 740 7064.

Iarracht de shaontacht fós ar na himreoirí óga, dar leis, ba chúis le cuid de na hearráidí a scaoil cúil isteach orthu. Ach tá feabhas ar imirt na gcosantóirí agus ar a gcomhpháírtíocht is a gcur chuige, mar shampla iarracht eile ar chúl a ghlan Sam Aladesanusi faoi bhun an chrosbharra.

Single male, local, 45, looking for long term rental apartment or small house in and around Dingle town. Rent allowance or HAP preferable, but not essential if fair agrement can be agreed. Clean and tidy with good reference from former landlady on request. Text details to 085-7359049

Situations Vacant / Postanna

An tseachtain roimhe sin, ar an gcósta thoir, bhí an bua ag Fánaithe Bhré ainneoin dhá chúl a scóráil Leo Gaxha agus Cian Brosnan, an dara ceann ag druidim le fior-dheireadh na coimhlinte nuair ba léir nach mbeadh leo. Is fíor-theist é sin ar fhoireann atá ag obair le chéile agus fonn orthu gach iarracht a dhéanamh go dtí an fhead deiridh.

Busy general fully computerised dental surgery in Tralee requires an experienced dental nurse and a receptionist to join our team. Immediate start, late January 2022. Fáilte roimh iarrataisí i nGaolainn. Please email your CV to fiacloir@gmail.com

Is léir leis go bhfuil an obair lasmuigh den pháirc ar siúl go tréan i gcónaí, agus fógra déanta acu le hoifigeach ceadúnais a fhostú. Cuireann sé sin leis an méid a dúirt Dennehy i nGaillimh, go bhfuil an club dírithe ar a gcuid cúraimí riaracháin agus eile a chur chun cinn, agus déanamh de réir a n-acmhainn.

Other / Eile

Dry secure storage unit for rent, Lispole area. 087-2820062

Ní chiallaíonn sé sin gan aon fhorbairt a dhéanamh: is léir sin chomh maith, leis an bhfógra a deineadh le déanaí go mbeidh foireann faoi 17 na mBan á cur san iomaíocht sna comórtais sraithe faoi aois an séasúr seo chugainn.

Beith siad san iomaiocht le club nua eile sna comórtais sin, Mayo FC, a bheidh ag glacadh páirte arís ag an libhéal náísiúnta, tar éis dóibh bheith rann-pháirteach go minic i gCorn na Sraithe faoin ainm Mayo League – mar a bhí lucht Chiarraí in ainm na sraithe áitiúla, sna comórtais faoi 21 fadó, agus i gCorn sin na Sraithe.

Agus is maith freisin cluiche cairdeasa le Killarney Celtic bheith beartaithe acu, i gcuimhne ar John Doyle, laoch peile de chuid na Ríochta a cailleadh deich mbliana ó shin. Imreofar an cluiche sin i gCill Airne ar an 26 Iúil, agus beidh cuid de shean-laochra an chontae – cuid de laochra na caide ina measc, b'fhéidir – ar an bpáirc don ócáid.

B'fhiú bheith ann.

Léargas an Lae

Louise Nic an tSionnaigh le tacaíocht ó Thobar Dhuibhne, Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar

Nílim chun é a lua. ‘Sea, bhínnse ag obair in RTÉ tráth, agus is cuimhin liom gan dabht an cultúr a bhí ann; cultúr ab ea é a bhí bunaithe agus tógaithe ar an “Tallann”, focal a chuireann déistin agus fonn gáire orm ag an am céanna. Ach tá go leor cloiste againn mar gheall ar an scéal le tamall anuas anois, agus ní chuirfidh mé leis an gcad é bús agus leis an bhfothragadh ar fad. An t-aon rud a déarfaidh mé ná gur maith ann sámhnas ar stoirm na “Fíornuachta”, fiú mara mairfidh sé i bhfad. ‘Sea, is nuacht é seo, ach ní scéal é seo fé 500 duine ag dul go tóin poill sa Mheánmhuir, mar shampla, ná scéal fé theocht an domhain bheith ag ardú as cuimse. Ná ní scéal é fén gcoiriúlacht sa tsochaí, fén easpa dídine, ná fén gcogaíocht. Ní bhaineann an scéal le boilsciú ná le ciníochas ná le féinmharú, ná le haon rud eile tromchúiseach mar iad.

Scéal é seo fé alfraitsí, a bhfuil an dúthaigh airgid agus cumhachta acu, ag tabhairt airgid is cumhachta d’alfraitsí eile. Daoine deasa iad ar fad, táim siúráilte, ach ní bhíonn an saoi féin gan locht agus is amhlaidh a ghéill na daoine seo don chathú, fé mar ghéillfeadh cuid mhaith againn dá mbeimis sa chás céanna. Sin é mo thuairim ar a laghad, agus cé nár mhaith liom beag is fiú a dhéanamh de rud éigin atá ag dó na geirbe ag ana-chuid daoine, ní fiú a thuilleadh tráchta a dhéanamh air mar scéal dar liom. Tá idir an Tallann agus daoine nach bhfuil tallann acu (ahem) ag déanamh dóthain dó sin cheana féin.

Caithfidh mé a rá gur deas an raidió a chur ar siúl ag a naoi na laethanta seo agus gan an lug titithe ar an lag orm de dheasca na scéalta brónacha ar fad. Is minic nach n-éistím ach le cláracha áirithe ar an raidió, go gcuirim cosc orm féin dul ar na meáin shóisialta, agus ná bacaim breathnú ar an dteilifís. Is amhlaidh a bhím a d’iarraidh na drochscéalta a sheachaint. Bím ag lorg an éalúchais.

Agus sin é díreach an rud atá uaim fé láthair leis. Is áit deacair an domhan, go háirithe le cúpla bliain anuas. Shúfadh sé an gus asat uaireanta. Ach bíonn rud éigin i gcónaí a chuireann brí is beocht thar n-ais ionat . An cleas ná an rud sin a aimsiú. Tá cúpla rud a dhéanann an bheart domsa: daoine eile, nuair a bhím sa ghiúmar dóibh; cairde agus clann; ceoldrámaí; drámaí; atmaisféar lán le gealladh agus teannas dearfach, fé mar a gheofá ar chuid dos na cláracha a mbínn fhéin ag obair orthu; leabhar den scoth; ceol fé leith; scannán maith i bhfochair phobal beag nua-chruthaithe sa phictiúrlann, agus sinn ag roinnt na taithí céanna; sobaldráma ó am go chéile; dul ar chúrsa spioradálta b’fhéidir. Fiú an bhácáil. Agus ná déantar dearúd ar an gcraic is ar an gcuileachta!

Is rud ríthábhachtach é an t-éalúchas. Tugann sé sólás agus sócúl dúinn. Cabhraíonn sé linn dearúd a dhéanamh ar an ndíle drochnuachta ina mbímid báite, gan trácht ar ár bhfadhbanna pearsanta féin. Faighimid faoiseamh ar feadh tamaillín agus tógaimid sos. Is uirlis úsáideach é an t-éalúchas chun aire a thabhairt dúinn féin, ach gan dul thar cailc leis; ná bímis ag cur vodca ar na calóga ar maidin, á mhaíomh gur maith dúinn é!

Is minic go dtugann achar gearr i ndomhan eile fuinneamh dúinn, agus tagaimid thar n-ais ullamh chun glacadh le dúshláin an domhain seo athuair, agus dul i ngleic leothu le fonn. Ná bíodh náire nó drogall ort riamh d’fhoinse éalúchais a aithint agus tumadh isteach inti. Ba chóir dúinn bheith i gcónaí feasach gur éalúchas atá i gceist, é a dhéanamh d’aon ghnó, agus gan dul ródhoimhin isteach ann. Ach más ball don chine daonna tú, ana-sheans go bhfuil seal den éalúchas seo tuillte agat. Is cuma cad a bhíonn ann – rud pearsanta é do gach mac máthair – ach bí cinnte sult a bhaint as, agus tar thar n-ais chugainn lán le fuinneamh aríst, athbheoite, agus atosnaithe (agus tUsaithe - chumas an ceann sin mé féin!). Beimidne go léir, agus an tsochaí, níos fearr as. B’fhéidir ná beadh Putin chomh nimhneach dá n-imreodh sé cluiche Twister! Agus gabhaim buíochas le RTÉ as an éalúchas réalaíoch a thugadar dom trí thimpiste le déanaí; tá sé beagnach chomh maith le clár Coronation Street . Beagnach

Camp Notes

Brigid O'Connor FUNDRAISER

The Chris O'Driscoll Fundraising Night at the Dogs will be held on Friday 9th September at The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee. Music after the racing. Superb raffle prize. Tickets €10 available at The Junction Bar, The Railway Tavern, O Dwyers Mace, Sandy Feet Farm, Camp, Murphy's Bar, Brandon and Dick Macs, Dingle.

On 1st January 2023, Chris suffered a significant stroke. Chris was admitted to CUH and spent 6 months in ICU. Despite these challenges and a lot of hurdles against him, Chris is slowly progressing. Chris has been accepted to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire Dublin, where he was transferred to on the 12th of June. This fundraiser is to support his on-going Rehabilitation and Recovery.

We are looking for any support that we can get. Different options to support this night include: Sponsorship of a race, purchasing an advert for the Programme, purchasing tickets for the night. Best wishes to Chris as he continues on his road to recovery. Thanks for your support. It is very much appreciated.

ROYAL ASCOT

History was made recently when a Camp Horse was placed in the prestigious Royal Ascot race meeting. Camp man, Shawn Curry's horse Soprano, came in third in the 2nd race of the day on Thursday.

Rated highly by WiseGuys, whose prediction that “Soprano will stroll to victory after she pulled off an impressive betting heist on her debut” was near spot on. A mighty achievement and a horse to be watched into the future. Congratulations and well done, Shawn! A horse running in The Royal Ascot has to be a first for Camp.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all who took part in the Eileen Joyce Memorial Darts night 2023 in Bolands Bar, Castlegregory. €605 was raised on the night for The Chris O'Driscoll rehab fund.

Also a huge thank you to The Students Council of Mean Scoil Nua an Leith Triuigh who raised a total of €385 recently through their Cake Sale. The total of €990 from both events has been transferred to the fund with huge appreciation. Many thanks to all.

MAHAREES REGATTA

There were four generations of the Goodwin family cheering on and out rowing Curraghs in the Billy Goodwin Memorial Race at The Maharees Regatta.

Great Grand Nana Marie Goodwin was indeed justifiably a proud woman on the day. Marie's daughter Eileen Quirke was on the winning crew, while her son Jackie and grandchildren Siobhan and William came in 2nd and her granddaughter Jane Fitzgerald was in the third placed crew.

Eden, Naoise and Tiarna Costello were observing the races keenly with Marie, their great grandmother.

It would be no surprise to see them on a winning crew in the future.

Joan Herbst made it to Maharees too to see The Corty Herbst Memorial Race in memory of her late husband. A great day enjoyed by everyone. Well done and congratulations to the organisers, winners and all the participants in Maharees Regatta 2023.

SYMPATHY

Deepest sympathy is extended to Mike McNamara, Tara and Luke, Knockglossmore, Camp on the recent death of Mike's father. Christopher (Christy) McNamara, Church Road, Ballybunion and late of Clounprohus, Moyvane passed away peacefully on 23rd June last. Rest In Peace.

ANNASCAUL, CAMP, INCH, LISPOLE COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratulations to all our athletes who represented our area so well over the weekend. You all did brilliantly and should be so proud of yourselves.

Eoghan and Fiach will go forward to represent Kerry in the Regionals in Ennis in August! Best of luck to them!

Thank you to all the parents and in particular

to Joe, Ceara and Anne Marie who helped to run the event.

SHEAR-A-THON

A Shear-a-thon in aid of a very worthy cause will be held this weekend, Friday, July 7th starting at 6.00 p.m. until 6.00 p.m. Saturday July 8th at O'Connors Bar & Guesthouse, Cloghane. James O'Connor will shear for 24 hours to raise funds for his sister Mary Lynch’s medical treatment.

Mary, a young mother of two, is fighting cancer and will benefit from any funds raised to access medical treatment for her illness in other countries.

Mary is well known and loved in her native Cloghane and around the peninsula. We wish her every success and blessings on her journey to full health.

James, Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat. Over the weekend there will be childrens amusements, music and fun for all the family.

Anseo is Ansiúd i gCorca Dhuibhne

Gheobhadh na feirmeoirí móra mórán leapacha ullamh chun an chré a thaoscadh orthu. Do gheobhaidís meitheal ansan chun taoscadh ar na scioltáin. Is minic a bhíodh na fearaibh á fhéachaint lena chéile féach cén fear ab fhearr, nó an chéad fhear a bheadh ar bharra na claise. Ní bhíodh puinn eatarthu mar bhí fearaibh crua láidre ann an uair sin.

Timpeall mí na Bealtaine nuair a bhíodh na gais éirithe in airde, cuirtí cré eile leo. Athchré a ghlaoimís ar an gcré sin. Bhí an obair níos crua sa chéad chré ná san athchré.

ar an dtuighe. Bíonn sé caol ag a bárr agus leathan a bhun ar nós ceann tighe, chun go sleamhnóchadh an t-uisge síos ar gach taobh agus ná raghadh sé i naice na bprátaí.

Fágtar na prátaí tonnta dtí'n Earrach. Is mó saghas práta a cuirtear san áit seo. Is iad so leanas cuid des na hainmneacha - Chaimpiní, AranChiefs, Aran-Bann-ers, Aran-Victors, Epicures, Golden-Wonders, Shamrocks, Blackanna, Flounders, Beaties, Up-to-dates, Kerr-pinks, agus a lán eile. Deir gach aoinne annso timcheall gur b'iad na Chaimpíní is fearr.

Fómhar na bPrátaí

Anois go bhfuil Féile an Phráta fé lán tseoil in Iarthar Dhuibhneach seo chugaibh cúpla ráiteas fésna prátaí:

• An síol a bhíonn caoch sa chré ní thagann sé.

• An giolaire don gcearc

An criochán don muc

Réphráta sa chorcán, An práta ramhar ar an margadh.

• Prátaí ar maidean

Prátaí um nóin

Is dá n-éireoinn istoíche

Prátaí a gheobhainn.

Tá cur síos sa phrós anseo thíos ar an talamh a réiteach dosna prátaí ag Domhnall Mac an tSíthigh, Baile Eaglaise.

“Nuair a bhíodh an talamh leasaithe i gcomhair na bprátaí, dheinimís an talamh a riastáil leis an ramhann – b’shin fód a iompú síos suas, na fóid a iompú i gcoinne a chéile ar leabaidh timpeall ceithre throigh ar leithead. Bhíodh feirmeoirí móra a dheineadh na leapacha práta a threabhadh le seisreach capall le céachta is clár air. Do threabhaidís boirbín, b’shin fód iompaithe ar fhaid na leapan. Ansin bhí clais idir gach dhá leabaidh agus bhí cnáimhín timpeall sé orlach ar leithead ar fhaid na claise. Deintí an cnáimhín a bhriseadh timpeall troigh ar fhaid agus chuiridís i lár na leapan, an t-aoileach fé agus an chré in airde. Bhainidís an clár den gcéachta agus gheobhaidís leis an gcapall is an céachta trí nó ceathair d’uaireanta sa chlais. Ansan bhíodh tarrac ar chré chun a leathadh ar an scioltáin.

Ghearrtaí na prátaí síl le scian. Scioltán a ghlaoimís ar aon phíosa den bpráta go raibh súil ann. Bhíodh sé oiriúnach chun an chré a leathadh air sa leabaidh. Bhíodh súil chaoch ins gach práta síl agus chaithfimís uainn an tsúil chaoch mar ná tiocfadh aon ghas as. Deintí an chlais chré a thaoscadh ar na scioltáin, cúpla orlach cré ar gach scioltán. Bhíodh mná ag leathadh na scioltán, timpeall troigh óna chéile agus scioltán fén mboirbín.

I mí an Mheithimh nuair a bhíodh na gais neartaithe suas cuirtí an chloch ghorm ar na gais le hinneall beag ar a nglaotaí inneall stuife air. Do leataí an stuif, an chloch ghorm ar na gais. Choimeádadh san an bhleaist uathu. Mura leathfá an chloch ghorm ar na gais, thiocfadh báisteach throm timpeall deireadh an Mheithimh agus bheadh na gais dubh ar maidin. Is iad an gnáthbhia a bhí againn ná na prátaí. Nuair a bhíos óg bhí prátaí breátha in Ard na Caithne. Seaimpíní a ghlaotaí orthu. Deirtí gurbh fhearr béile acu ná císte aráin.”

- An Baile i bhFad Siar

- Coiscéim 2000

Cur síos sa bhéaloideas ar chur na bprátaí i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh.

“Níl aon fheirm againn ach cuirimíd prátaí i ngort le duine éigin eile! Siad an buachaill aimsire agus m'athair a d'ullmhuigheann an talamh na gcóir. Leathtar aoileach ar an ngort sar a gcuirtear na prátaí. Tairrigtear an taoileach ó'n mbuaile 'dtín ngort, agus leathtar ar an ngort é le píce agus le sluaisaid. Deintear le céachda nó le ramhainn na leabthacha i gcóir na bprátaí. Ní chuireann aoinne sa cheanntar so prátaí i ndrilleanna.

Úsáideach céachtaí adhmaid annso, sar a dtáinig an chéachta iarainn.

Ní úsáidtear fós iad. Deintí na raimhne go léir sa chéardchain fadó bíonn súil ar gach scioltán, agus bíonn siad istigh i mála go nglaodhtar, urlach air, ag an nduine a bhíonn ag sáthadh. Dúntar na poill an lá a sáthtar na scioltáin. Le sluasaid nó ramhainn a dúntar iad. Cabhruigheann na cómharsain le chéile ag cur na bprátaí.

Nuair a bhíonn na péacáin i ngiorracht a bheith ar barra, cuirtear an chéad chré ortha. Cuirtear "guano" ortha i n-aon fheacht leis an gcéad chré. Nuair a bhíonn na gais ar barra cuirtear an t-aith cré ortha. Nuair a bhíonn dream na leabhthan clúdhaighthe le gais 'seadh cuirtear stuif ortha chun ná tiochfadh an bhleaist ortha. Cuirtear stuif dó nó trí uaireanta, ar na prátaí, agus na prátaí go gcuirtear stuif trí nuaire ortha, bhíonn siad níos feárr ná na prátaí go gcuirtear stuif dhá uair ortha.

I nDeire An Fhóghmhair baintear na prátaí, agus cnúsaightear annsan iad isteach i málaí. Annsan tugtar 'dtín scioból iad, ach muna mbeadh slíghe a ndóthain ag na prátaí deintear poill sa ghort dóibh. I gcóir síl a chuirtear cuid de's na prátaí sna poill. Is mar seo a deintear poll phrátaí.

Caithtear na prátaí ar an ithir, agus cuirtear cré agus tuighe nó sgeacha laistig leó. Bíonn an chré leadh-throig nó mar sin ar aoirde anuas

Is dóigh liom go ndeintí prátaí a úsáid chun stairs sa cheanntar. Tá sé ó's cionn trí-fhichid blian ó shoin ó bhí sé á dhéanamh. Ní fheadar conous a deintí é. Is mar seo a deintí císte staimpí. Deintí gráta de bhlúire stáin ar dtúis. Annsan scríobtaí na prátaí ar sin anuas ar an mbórd. Cuirtí na prátaí scríobtha isteach i mblúire éadaigh, agus fáisctaí e chun go nimtheóchadh an tuisge as. Caithtí gráinne plúir agus gráinne salainn anuas ar sin. Annsan cuirtí ag bácáil é.

It’s All In The Mind Take A Break Orla Smyth

guidebooks: everything a traveller would need to enjoy their trip. Much like today, they even brought souvenirs on their return. There is evidence of this from a recent discovery in Roman London excavations. The inscription on an ordinary iron writing stylus reads in Latin: “From the city I’ve come. A welcome gift I’m bringing for you/with a sharp point, so that you remember me./I wish if fortune allowed, I could have given more generously, as the way is long and my purse empty”. In other words “ I went to Rome and all I got you was this lousy pen"!

The practice of holiday travel fell out of popular use during the dark ages but the mediaeval church, mindful of how to keep the population from rebelling, introduced the holy day calendar and enforced frequent mandatory days of rest and festivities. Even though travel was unlikely at the time, the word holiday is derived from Holy Day.

need to be jolted out of complacency every so often. Burnout can occur when we do the same thing over and over again. We get stuck in the same thought and behaviour grooves : it becomes harder to introduce change and as we can become more and more set in our ways, we become less adaptable, closed off to newness and growth. If we do not shake things up, we can begin to lose interest in what we are doing and may feel that our work is not worthwhile. Life becomes heavy, we lose our joie de vivre and we risk wasting our one precious life in joyless existence.

The busy season is upon us again and people are on the move. Come this time of year, millions of people up sticks and travel to every corner of the world. We are, after all, a migratory species, having lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers for the majority of our existence : it is written in our genetic code. We are responding to a kind of primal urge, driven by the visceral thrill of being someplace new.

The formal concept of travelling for pleasure rather than necessity, dates back to ancient Roman times. The first civilization to enjoy a prolonged period of peace and prosperity, they began to shift focus from merely surviving to thriving. As modern humans, once our basic physiological needs of food, shelter and a certain degree of safety are met, we move up the hierarchy of needs to self fulfilment, purpose and the motivation for a better quality of life.

In Ancient Rome, alongside the growth and development of social services, infrastructure and government, the necessity of leisure time for its citizens also emerged. Essentially, there was a basic understanding that ‘all work and no play makes Romelus a dull boy’. They believed that travel, creativity, and mental stimulation would allow them to become fulfilled enlightened people. According to Aristotle It is in leisure that the beauty and meaning of the human condition can be found.

As the benefits of taking a break from their regular routine were recognized, periods of rest and travel were facilitated with the establishment of the first inns, restaurants and

Travelling for pleasure and recreation became the privilege of the aristocracy and the landed gentry throughout the Renaissance until finally it began to re-emerge with the Industrial revolution and the movement for workers rights. As conditions improved and the standard of living increased for the general population, demands for a better quality of life grew. Society needed to shift from providing the basic necessities for survival to enhancing the physical and mental well being of the common man. Personal development, physical stamina, longevity and a sense of purpose and fulfilment were part of this new awareness. With the Universal Declaration of Humans Rights in 1948 and the specific reference in Article 24 Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay, the importance of holidays was officially recognised.

And so the industry was created. From the seaside, sandcastles and boarding houses of the 50s to the sunshine package holidays of the 70s, we’ve never looked back. Nowadays holidays come in all shapes and sizes. There is no limit to where we can go and what we can do- from arctic cruises to trips to the moon!

Holidays are a time to break free from our daily routines ; to enjoy the novelty and freedom of new places and culture. Studies have shown that people who take holidays have lower stress levels, less risk of heart disease, a better outlook on life and are less likely to experience burnout.

It is easy for routine to become a mindless habit. While a certain amount of predictability is necessary for every day functioning we do

On holiday, we have an opportunity to pause, slow down, look around us and see beyond the narrow confines and perceived limits of the habitual every day. Of course, holidays do not solve all our problems but they certainly are a part of the solution. Taking a holiday at least once, ideally twice a year is very important to maintain optimal mood and brain functioning. It is not a luxury ; it is a necessity. In communist Russia, the regime subsidised holidays for all the populace. They enforced month long breaks at state constructed summer resorts because they realised workers needed time away from their routine if they were to remain productive.

Being on holiday is liberating : we can loosen the reins, sit back and let it happen: open to the unknown, the unexpected, embrace new food, language, culture: be content to do nothing at all, re connect with the kids- laugh and chat with them, go on strange adventures, feel the exhilaration of the extreme or fall asleep by the pool . The body will tell us what we need if we take the time to listen to it!

When we are overworked or dulled by mundane routine, we can get stuck in very fixed ideas of who we are and what we are capable of. When we rest the body and mind we are in a better position to tap into our full human potential. On holidays, we have the time to let go- of our expectations and responsibilities ( within reason!) We can push beyond the reductive notions of who we think we are and explore new possibilities, take on a bit of an edge, new challenges, a sense of curiosity, a sense of wonder. With rest and stimulation, we can restore balance to the body and soul.

Ó Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Tá gliondar an tSamhraidh tréis buille diamhair Geimhrúil a fháilt idir an dá shúil. Seans ná fuil ann ach gal suip ach ní scarfainn le aon phingin i ngeall ná in argóint fén gcúram. Gan amhras bhí feirmeoirí sásta gur bhuail fearainn fheannaideach na páirceanna agus cuireadh deire le duilleoga dreoite agus fás dreoite. Tá an féar agus gach luibh agus bláth go gealgháireach ach níor mhaith leis an bfheirmeoir síor bháisteach ná aon duine ar m’aithne.

Tour.

Sea tá an rás iomráitreach an Tour de France tosnaithe ón gcéad lá don mí agus is mó eachtra a leanann an rás céanna. Rothaíocht ar réidh thailte agus ar shleasa sléibhte go mbeadh do dhóthain le déanamh agat iad a shiúl. Seo é an Tour a chéad thosnaigh 120 bliain ó shoin ach bhí briseadh beag le linn an dá Chogadh Domhanda 1914 go dtí 1919 agus agus 1939 dtí 1947. Tás againn go léir mar a bhuaidh Stiofán de Róiste an rás sa bhliain 1987 agus mar a ghnóthaigh Seán Kelly an geansaí glas mar Rí na n-Ard Chnoc ní uair amhain í.

Is i 1903 thosnaigh an chéad rás.‘Sé an rothaí Maurice Garin a thug an lá leis. Ní raibh ach seasca rothaí ag glacadh páirte, ach fiche a chríochnaigh é. Ní bhuaidh aon rothaí an tour sé bhabhta ach bhuaidh siad seo leanas chúig cinn an duine go dti seo. Tosnóm le Jacques Anquetil a bhuaidh 1957, ’61,’62, ‘63 ’64.

Is dócha gur chualaís fén gcéad duine eile Eddy Mercks a bhuaidh 1969,’70, ’71 ’72 agus ’74 agus an tríú rothaí ná Bernard Hinault ’78, ’79, ’81, ’82 agus ’85. An ceathrú fear ná Miguel Indurain ón Spáin a bhuaidh 5 stáid i ndiaidh a chéile, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95. Mar eolas bhuaidh Lance Armstrong an rás seacht bhabhta ach dícháilíodh é.

Tá tráctaireacht ar an rás ar Tg4, tráchtaireacht eolach suimiúil.
