A Trek Through Time

A Culinary Odyssey: How Humans Got Smart with Food

Following on from a talk I gave a few weeks ago I have been examining how our relationship with food has shaped communities, cultural diversity and connection for millennia. So far, I have reached the conclusion that the era of ultra-processed foods, the loss of diversity in the diet and its impact on our natural environment is not a very clever human idea after all.

Throughout the eons, humans have embarked on an extraordinary culinary crusade that has played a pivotal role in shaping our evolution as a species. The story of our relationship with food is a tale of adaptation, innovation, and cultural development. From foraging in the wild to cultivating crops and creating elaborate cuisines, our culinary journey has been one of the driving forces behind human progress and societal evolution. Yet when you examine the diet of the modern human, particularly those living in privileged parts of the world, you would wonder if we have forsaken all we knew and all we learned for the sake of convenience and instant gratification and are we in danger of taking a giant leap backwards in evolutionary terms.

The Hunter-Gatherer Era: Nourishing Survival

Before the dawn of agriculture, our ancestors lived as hunter-gatherers, relying on their instincts and knowledge of the natural world to find sustenance. During this period, the human diet consisted of a diverse range of wild plants, fruits, and nuts, as well as hunting game for protein. We had to physically move around to find food - we used energy to gain energy. The need to locate and secure food sources not only fostered cooperation and communication but also propelled the development of essential survival skills and tools.

Agriculture Revolution: Cultivating Civilization

Around 10,000 years ago, a groundbreaking shift occurred with the development of agriculture. This pivotal event marked the transition from nomadic lifestyles to settled communities, as humans discovered the art of planting and harvesting crops. The cultivation of crops like wheat, rice, and maize not only provided a more reliable food source but also enabled population growth and the establishment of permanent settlements.

The domestication of animals further enhanced food production, providing a consistent supply of meat, milk, and other animal products. As societies became more agricultural, humans could focus on other pursuits beyond mere survival, leading to the flourishing of arts, sciences, and trade.

The Advent of Cooking: From Raw to Refined

Cooking played a transformative role in our culinary journey. While the precise origin of cooking remains shrouded in mystery, evidence suggests that humans began to cook food over fires more than a million years ago. This culinary innovation was a game-changer, as it made food more digestible, safer to eat, and significantly expanded the variety of dishes available.

Cooking allowed humans to extract more energy from their food, contributing to the development of larger brains and cognitive abilities.

The transformation of raw ingredients into delicious meals not only satisfied our physical hunger but also kindled a sense of community and shared experience, as cooking became a communal activity and the foundation of social gatherings.

Migration and Culinary Exchange: Spices and Globalization

As human populations expanded and civilizations developed, various cultures began to emerge across the globe. Migration and exploration led to the exchange of culinary practices and ingredients, transforming local cuisines and laying the groundwork for globalization. The famed Silk Road, for instance, facilitated the movement of spices and culinary knowledge between East and West, enriching both regions' culinary traditions.

Spices, in particular, played a significant role in shaping world history. They were prized for their ability to preserve food, mask spoilage, and enhance flavour, making them valuable commodities during ancient trade routes. As spices became more accessible, they infused new dimensions into cuisines and stimulated cross-cultural connections.

Modern Era: Convenience and the Culinary Renaissance

The modern era ushered in unprecedented changes in the way we produce, consume, and experience food. Technological advancements revolutionized agriculture, enabling higher yields and more efficient food distribution systems. Industrialization transformed food processing, introducing convenience foods that shaped our dietary habits and lifestyles.

While these innovations brought accessibility, they also sparked concerns about nutrition, health and sustainability. For the first time since we ceased hunting and gathering for food we are faced with an increased risk of illness and death directly from the food we are consuming. Once upon a time a dodgy toadstool or innocuous-looking herb may have led to a swift death, nowadays our poison is a long, slow feed to chronic illness, pain and premature death. In recent years, a culinary renaissance is emerging emphasizing the importance of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and traditional cooking techniques. While we are years away from undoing the harm caused by mass food processing and production, this movement celebrates diversity and cultural heritage, encouraging people to connect with their roots through food and cherish the art of preparing a meal from scratch. There is hope.

The Future of Food: Navigating New Frontiers

As we look to the future, our culinary journey continues to evolve. The world faces unprecedented challenges such as climate change, overpopulation, and food insecurity. In response, scientists, chefs, and innovators are exploring sustainable practices, alternative protein sources, and vertical farming to secure our food future.

Technology continues to play a central role in reshaping our culinary experience. From AI-powered recipe recommendations to 3D-printed foods, we are witnessing a new era of culinary creativity and efficiency. Additionally, the rise of ethical considerations, such as the impact of our food choices on the environment and animal welfare, will continue to influence our culinary landscape.

The story of how humans evolved with food is a fascinating account of invention, resilience and adaptation. From our humble beginnings as hunter-gatherers to our current state of sophisticated culinary exploration, food has been much more than mere sustenance—it has been the catalyst for cultural exchange, societal development, and human progress. As we embark on the next chapters of our culinary journey, we must strive to find a harmonious balance between innovation and tradition. Meaningful efforts are required for a sustainable and resilient future for the health of our planet and all its inhabitants thus ensuring that our relationship with food remains one of celebration, sustenance, and connection for millennia to come.

COW'S MILK AND PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVES

The plant-based milk industry is booming, and new milks seem to be cropping up everywhere — from the old standbys of almond milk and oat milk, to newfangled pistachio milk and cashew milk. The options are endless. But few of these alternatives compare to cow's milk in terms of nutrition. There's so much variability in the nutritional content of nondairy products, It is the flavour and the mouthfeel and the other properties are probably what's mostly driving the development in these products and not so much like if they are a nutritional match for cow's milk

Cow's milk is more nutrient dense than most plant-based alternatives. Scientists recently analysed the nutrition labels for 237 plant-based milk products from 23 different manufacturers. But only 28 of the beverages were comparable or better than dairy milk when it came to vitamin D, calcium, and protein. Of the plant-based milks, oat milk was the plant milk most commonly fortified with calcium and vitamin D — 76% of the oat milks analysed contained both nutrients. The runner ups were soy milks and almond milks.. Plant-based milks are highly variable milks and tend to have less protein than cow's milk as well. Cow's milk contains 8 grams of protein per serving. Soy milk is typically equivalent in protein, but other plant-based milks contain only 2 grams of protein on average. No plant milks have cholesterol, they all have very low levels of saturated fat, and some of them have fibre. Cows milk has cholesterol, saturated fat, and no fibre which can make plant-based milk better for some people. Experts are not that concerned about protein, as most people get ample protein as part of our diets. If you're looking to get calcium and vitamin D from plant-based milk, then you need to read the label to make sure that they actually provide what you nutritionally are looking for. If you look at the label and the product that you have has both calcium and vitamin D on the label, it's likely that the amounts of calcium and vitamin D that have been added are similar to what's in cow's milk.

On the other hand, if your product lists just calcium or just vitamin D, it's a little bit less likely. The biggest takeaway, is that plant-based milks are not a one to one match for cow's milk. It's important to get both vitamin D and calcium in your diet but where you get that from can be from is up to you.

ACRES SCORECARD DEADLINE EXTENSION

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue has announced a four-week extension to the closing date for submission of completed scorecards for results-based actions under the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES). While this is a welcome extension, it just proves that if the Minister is anything, he and his department is inconsistent. On 17thJuly, it was reported that he announced in the Dail that there would be no extension. He quipped that if agricultural advisors are in trouble and under pressure to meet the deadline, they can employ additional staff. This was a ridiculous assertion, as not many young graduates would be willing to relocate to remote parts of the country for a three-, four- or five-week contract. And who was he to tell a profession that they must recruit additional staff, when his own department seemingly have been working away with their existing staff levels, while they push back their deadlines continuously.

The original agrisnap/GLAMS system that is used to record and input the scoring data was supposed to be up and running on 12th May but was not open to advisors until the 9th June. As this was a Friday evening, this was effectively Monday 12th June. But not an extra hour was added. And the system is far from perfect, and in many cases inoperable, and many advisors and farmers have found out.

The new closing date will be Friday, September 29, which will give advisors an additional four weeks to complete the submissions. The previous deadline was August 31.

The advisor’s representative body (Agricultural Consultants Association) that represents a large number of farm advisors were asking for this extension for weeks and even months. However, it wasn’t until Teagasc (which is an extension of DAFM announced that they would be unable

to meet the ACRES Deadline, that Mr McConalogue announced the extension. This is very disingenuous and it completely ignored the appeals and requests of the ACA, and was only granted to get the stateadvisory out of an embarrassing situation.

Also, according DAFM, the minister is channelling “significant funding” to support the Agricultural Consultants Association (ACA) for investment in upskilling their members on the work of the ACRES scheme. Let us hope that this is for all advisors. Currently, if the Department organise a training event for advisors, State-employed advisors get the day off, with full pay and travel/subsistence (and in some cases over-night) expenses, while independent advisors must take the day off, away from their office and work, and cover all costs themselves. Teagasc also get a State-Subsidy of approximately €630 per farmer that they have on their books. It is not sure if this is actually for advice provided, as many farmers have left the services of the State agency, but remain on their books. This is on top of the “membership-fee” or “Club fee” charged and the charges imposed for individual services. An loaded dice, if anything.

McConalogue stated that “as with many of my department’s schemes, advisors are a key enabler in the implementation of ACRES……” Let us hope that he means this and remembers this in the future. The vast majority of these schemes would not work without the full cooperation of the independent advisor.

NATIONAL FERTILISER DATABASE LAUNCHED

The National Fertiliser Database is live and is now open for registration of Professional Fertiliser End Users (primarily farmers and others that use fertilisers as part of their work) and Fertiliser Economic Operators (e.g. importers, merchants etc. that sell fertilisers). From the 1st September anyone wishing to sell or purchase fertiliser (including lime) must be being registered.

Mr McConalogue and his Department is very proud if this, but many farmers are worried that they will do something wrong, due to the poor information flow downwards. Farmers are asking for information on the rules, while no rules seem to be available. DAFM issued a glossy colourful booklet titles Farm Plant Identification Ket (at considerable cost) to 46,000 farmers in ACRES recently, yet cannot issue a one-page print-out on these rules to farmers, and have left them guessing and worrying.

From 1st September, any farmer or other Professional Fertiliser End User who wishes to purchase fertiliser, including lime, must be registered as a Professional Fertiliser End User with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. This is a very straightforward and simple process whereby farmers, or their agents, can register now using www.agfood. ie . Importantly, those farmers involved in the import of fertiliser, farm to farm transfers, and/or retail sale of fertiliser must also register as Fertiliser Economic Operators on www.agfood.ie .

Also from 1st September, all fertiliser transactions along the supply chain must be recorded. This includes fertiliser dispatched from merchants’ premises to farms, moving from farm-to-farm or imported. Merchants can enter this data manually through the Department’s digital online service www.agfood.ie or through an Application Programming Interface that facilitates automatic upload of data from retailers’ IT system directly to the National Fertiliser Database.

Many farmers are low-end users of fertilizer, buying it by the bag rather than by the tonne or pallet. These people shouldn’t be worrying about breaking the rule, as the Rule Makers should be informing them of “What’s What”!

DEALING WITH MASTITIS

Mastitis and SCC control involves knowing your cows and their SCC levels and managing milking to control this. Taking action as soon as you notice SCC rising is key. This indicates that infection levels are rising, which is a negative for cow health and also milk value and processability.

According to the latest research:

• 100,000 to 200,000 cells/ml indicates approximately 20% of the herd are infected.

• 200,000 to 300,000 cells/ml indicates approximately 30% of the herd are infected.

10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

• 300,000 to 400,000 cells/ml indicates approximately 40% of the herd are infected.

So if you have elevated SCC on farm, the next steps are to milk record, use the CMT paddle to identify infected quarters, and then carry out some culturing and sensitivity on milk from the infected quarters. That will give insights into which cows, which quarters are infected and then you can review your options for:

• The Herd

• The individual cows

Uninfected Cows are the most important cow group on the farm. You should be able to milk these as normal –but it is key to protect from infection, especially if the cows are young. A word of caution – cows can vary quite a bit in SCC and infection status so milk recording on a regular basis and using a CMT will be key. The key areas to concentrate on are: Teat disinfection –spraying plenty of teat spray after the clusters are taken off and make sure you get full coverage. Always aim to see the spray dripping off the teats. This is a sign they are fully sprayed.

In an infected herd, keep your infected cows in a different group, milking them first and always aiming to minimise any cross-contamination possibilities from clusters or even when in sheds. Always wear clean gloves /aprons at milking and ensure there isn’t any spread happening between cows on your hands. Clusters can easily be contaminated where mastitis infections are caused by contagious bacteria so always ensure liners are fresh and that the clusters are clean and have minimal chance to harbour bacteria.

Cluster dipping can be effective, but only if the peracetic acid dip solution is kept constantly clean, and refreshed while cluster flushing can be a better option, but check to make sure you are using enough water for good turbulence and enough peracetic acid solution to be cleaning the clusters effectively.

Week in Annascaul

Launch of 'Coiscéim na Staire' Heritage Trail

Sunday 13 August, 11:30am

Annascaul Historical Society are pleased to launch 'Coiscéim na Staire': a series of sixteen Valentia slate flagstones set into the new footpaths in the village.

Marking the sites of shops, fairs, vanished trades, long lost courthouses & barracks, dance halls and hotels - among others - more than 200 years of village history is commemorated.

Join us as we take these 'footsteps in history' along Annascaul's memory lane on Main Street. This will be a guided walk with information provided by local historians and folklorists

How many guesthouses had indoor toilets? Not many. Where could you go to dance or watch a film? How many shops were there, and who owned them? What could you buy?

Photographer Father Browne visited the village and election candidates gave stirring speeches. Weddings and funerals, arrests and convictions and football matches round out the story of a

1901 Census Miscellany in West Kerry

The 1901 Census was taken on Sunday, March 31. In this issue we’ll continue to look at some of the names, mistakes, mysteries and mischief in both the hand-written and printed census forms.

The Islandman. That’s the English title of the 1926 book An tOileánach by the celebrated West Kerry author Tomás Ó Criomhthain of the Great Blasket Island. The book was translated from the original Irish Language in 1934. So, what has Tomás got to do with the 1901 Census? Well, according to the Census Tomás was 44 years of age in March. But in the 1911 Census he was recorded as being 60 years of age.

Let’s look at a few websites to see what year they give for his birth. Wikipedia gives 29 April, 1855. The Dictionary of Irish Biographies gives his year of birth as 1854/1855. The Irish Times gives 1855. People Pill states he was born on 21 December 1856. Goodreads.com said his year of birth was 1865 as did the Oxford University Press website, Waterstones and Booktopia.com.

Enough of this! Why don’t we just ask Tomás to tell us exactly when he was born. “I was born on Saint Thomas’s day in the year 1856”. Those were his first words on page one of The Islandman. Great! Now we know for sure! Or do we?

When is St. Thomas’s day? The Feast day of St. Thomas the Apostle is on July 3rd. But the Feast Day of St. Thomas the Apostle is also on 21 December in the Roman Calendar. Now what do we do?

These dates are after the Census was taken in March 1901 so Tomás was aged 44 in March that year and 45 later in July or December. The correct age for the April 1911 Census must be 54. Are we agreed? Yes, no, maybe?

One final point, the Post Office issued a Tomás Ó Criomhthain commemorative stamp in 1957 to mark 100 years since Tomás’s birth. They must have subtracted 44 from 1901 and came up with 1857. They should have read The Islandman.

There is a reference on the Ireland Reaching Out website to a Catherine O’Callaghan being married to a John Tagney in St. John’s Church, Tralee on September 11, 1920 by a Father David O’Leary.

Hooks. Another resident of Upper Main Street was John Hooks, 59 and a widower. John was born in Kildare around 1842. He was an R.I.C pensioner with 6 daughters ranging in age from 31 to 16. All of the girls were born in Kerry, none were married and five of them were dressmakers.

There are multiple variations of the name Hooks and again the origin is uncertain. It may be an occupational name for somebody who made hooks. Tailor. John Scanlon, 42, was a tailor in Gate (Gaol) Street and he was married to Johannah, 40. The couple had nine children, 6 girls and 3 boys and they were aged 18/16/14/12/9/7/6/3/2. Patrick was the 14 year-old who was recorded as a ‘Tailor’. He was probably an apprentice tailor. Apprentices had to train with an established tailor for 7 years in those days.

Unemployed. It’s surprising that quite a number of people decided to declare their occupation as unemployed when they might have been employed before the end of 1901. Should they have just declared their normal occupation? Maybe the enumerator insisted on the ‘unemployed’ status declaration. You could be ill and unemployed in those days. For instance, in the coastguard service at that time if a man was ill he wasn’t paid until he returned to work.

Michael Ferriter, 34, lived in Ballincolla, Dunurlin, with his wife Mary, 32 and his mother Mary, 57. She gave her occupation as ‘Farmer’s Widow’. Michael was a ‘Stonecutter unemployed’. But the family probably still had some land to keep them going.

John O’Connor, 26, lived in Kilcooly, Kilmalkedar. He was a single man with six brothers and four sisters. His brother Edward, 25, was the Parish Clerk. However, John gave his occupation as ‘Unemployed Postman’. How does a postman become unemployed at age 26? Did people suddenly stop writing letters?

Mary Ashe. This young woman lived in Ballyinknockane, Knockglass. Her mother, also Mary, was a widow aged 49 with seven children. Her eldest child was Mary, 20, and she was an ‘Unemployed teacher’.

This is probably not too surprising when you discover that there were around 60 teachers and assistant teachers in West Kerry in 1901 - twice the number of publicans in the area. Mary probably helped her mother behind the bar while waiting for a post.

Patrick Reidy. Mary Devane, 67, lived in the Colony, Dingle. She was single and her occupation was ‘Washerwoman’. There were many washerwomen in West Kerry in 1901 but by 1911 they were virtually non-existent in the records. Patrick Reidy, aged 36 and a native of Glin, County Limerick, was married to Mary Devane’s niece, also Mary, 25. Patrick recorded his occupation as ‘Carpenter unemployed’.

Parish Priest. The parish priest of Dingle in 1901 was father David O’Leary. Little did he think the name would become famous some 90 years later. He was aged 47 and was born on the island of Guernsey around 1854. There were three curates in Dingle parish then and all lived in house number 1 in Upper Main Street.

A chairde, throughout August, can you continue to help us please? Please continue to advice visitors to enjoy the Slea Head drive experience by following the signs and driving in a clockwise route (one way) from Dingle town. Please advise them to follow Kerry County Council’s local signage and NOT their Sat Navs or Google Maps for Slea Head. Visitors will not be aware that locals living on the Slea Head route, particularly from Chill Mhic an Domhnaigh to Fahan, can drive as normal against the flow of visitor traffic. So please, if you have the chance or opportunity to speak with visitors, can you please recommend that they drive on the lefthand side of the road to ensure that they do not meet local traffic coming against them.

As we face the challenges of climate change, Kerry County Council has started to develop its Local Authority Climate Action Plan (LACAP). The statutory Climate Action Plan will lay out how the Council, along with all stakeholders, aims to tackle the challenges the county faces from climate change. We need all stakeholders to get actively involved in order to achieve a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy by 2050. As an all-of-society approach is required, this is a call to everyone to get involved in the drafting of an ambitious Climate Action Plan for the county. Please find more information on the plan making process at https://consult. kerrycoco.ie/. Everyone is encouraged to engage at this early stage as we begin to prepare the plan. Engagement is open between July 7th and August 8th, 2023. Submissions/comments/ ideas and/or suggestions are encouraged and welcomed and can be made online via https:// consult.kerrycoco.ie

PILLARS OF SURVIVAL – Jan O’ Connell

Photographic works, presented by FENTON PROJECTS

Ionad an Bhlascaoid, The Blasket Centre, Dunquin, Co Kerry, This exhibition at Ionad an Bhlascaoid in West Kerry, shows Jan O' Connell’s new collection of photographic art work made on the peninsula over the past year.

Pillars of Survival focuses in a new way on portraits of individual rocks in West Kerry. Separately, Jan has photographed up close the dynamic sea which forms and interplays with these structures. This combination suggests the close relationship between ocean power and these iconic features. Large scale and technically impressive, Jan’s photographic pieces are moving and deeply engaging, giving us much to reflect upon regarding our relationship with this unique landscape that draws so many people to it.

This emotional connection is also drawn out by Dairena Ní Chinnéide’s remarkable haiku poems in Irish, which respond to the photographs. These poems will accompany the images on the walls of Ionad an Bhlascaoid.

In September 2022, Janice O’Connell decided to relocate her work and family to the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht region in West Kerry. This move enabled her to become fully immersed in this project while pursuing an MFA in fine art photography with Ulster University. It has been 30 busy years since Jan had previously graduated from the Crawford College of Art in Cork. In this time she has established f22 photography, a successful architectural photography business, but recently has been drawn to her fine art practice once again.

PILÉIR MARTHANAIS – Jan O’Connell

Saothair ghrianghrafadóireachta, curtha i láthair ag FENTON PROJECTS Ionad an Bhlascaoid, Dún Chaoin, Co. Chiarraí 5 -23 Lúnasa Léiríonn an taispeántas seo in Ionad an Bhlascaoid i gCorca Dhuibhne cnuasach nua Jan O’Connell de shaothar ealaíne grianghrafadóireachta a cruthaíodh ar an leithinis le bliain anuas.

Díríonn Piléir Marthanais i slí nua ar phortráidí de charraigeacha aonair i gCorca Dhuibhne. Ar leithligh, tá Jan tar éis grianghraif a thógáint go dlúth den fharraige dhinimiciúil a fhoirmíonn agus a dhéanann idirghníomhartha leis na struchtúir seo. Tugann an teaglaim seo le fios go bhfuil dlúthghaol idir cumhacht aigéin agus na gnéithe íocónacha seo. Ar scála mór agus ar leibhéal ard teicniúil, tá gluaiseacht i bpíosaí grianghrafadóireachta Jan agus iad thar a bheith tarraingteach, rud a thugann go leor dúinn le machnamh air maidir lenár gcaidreamh leis an tírdhreach uathúil seo a tharraingíonn an oiread sin daoine chuige.

Tarraingítear an ceangal mothúchánach seo freisin sna dánta iontacha haiku i nGaeilge le Dairena Ní Chinnéide, a fhreagraíonn do na grianghraif. Beidh na dánta seo in éineacht leis na híomhánna ar bhallaí Ionad an Bhlascaoid.

I mí Mheán Fómhair 2022, chinn Janice O’Connell a cuid oibre agus a muintir a athlonnú go Gaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne in gCorca Dhuibhne. Chuir an t-aistriú seo ar a cumas tumadh iomlán a dhéanamh sa tionscadal seo agus MFA i ngrianghrafadóireacht mhínealaíne á déanamh aici in Ollscoil Uladh. Tá 30 bliain ghnóthach ann ó bhain Jan céim amach roimhe seo ó Choláiste Ealaíne Crawford i gCorcaigh. Sa tréimhse seo bhunaigh sí

f22 grianghrafadóireacht, gnó grianghrafadóireacht ailtireachta rathúil, ach le déanaí tá sí dírithe in athuair ar a cleachtas mínealaíne.

'Land' Exhibition at the Grilse Gallery, Killorglin

Currently on show as part of the "Land" exhibition at The Grilse Gallery Killorglin is From the Mizen & down Bantry Bay, an engraved fin whale rib, which depicts the coastline where the whale’s skeleton was washed ashore. The rib, measuring 170 x 75 x 20 cm, is from a whale with a body length of over 24 metres.

Artist Danny Osborne says: ‘I made a number of drawings of the coast by boat, traced them onto the bone and then engraved the lines deeply before filling them with a paste of found red ochre and a binder of whale oil. Based on a similar technique used around 20,000 years ago’.

The show was opened by poet Paddy Bushe whose crafted and inspiring introduction added to everyone’s appreciation of the exhibition: even some artists admitted to an enhanced perception of their own work following his interpretation.

Until 13 August this exhibition by ten artists presents work by Katherine Boucher Beug, Edwina Bracken, Audrey Fleming, Karen Hendy, Con Kelleher, Susan Montgomery, Noël O’Callaghan, Danny Osborne, Aisling Roche and Mary G Sheehan.

Nuair atá duine ag dul ar an mBlascaod Mór, baineann tú amach an Inneoin is mar pháirt do san tá caladh an oileáin. Nuair a chuireann tú do chos ar an slip don gcéad uair braitheann tú trí bhonn do chos is lúidíní suas dá mbeadh an slip céanna ina steillbheathaidh go mbeadh scéal le hinsint nó leabhar nó dhó le cur le saibhreas leabhair an oileáin. Is í an slip an áit dheireannach a mbíodh a gcos ag na hoileánaigh is iad a’ dul amach ar an míntír ag dul ‘on Daingean nó go Meiriceá. Is é an chéad áit a mbíodh a gcos is iad ag teacht abhaile go dtí’n oileán.

Nuair a bhí muintir an mhisin Phrotastúnaigh ar an oileán chun an scoil a thógaint in 1839 dheineadar deisiú ar an slip mar pháirt do san. Ach is ó 1907, nuair a cheannaigh Bord na gCeantar Cúng an t-oileán ó Iarla Chorcaí a deineadh ana-chuid oibre ar an tslip. Is iad san leis a thóg an falla mór cosanta taobh amuigh don tslip. Roimhe seo dá mbeadh naomhóg ag an slip is dá dtiocfadh borradh isteach bhí sé i ndainséar smidiríní a dhéanamh di nó í a scuabadh amach chun farraige.

Bhí an scéal ráite i dtaobh naomhóg a bhí amuigh ó Dhún Chaoin oíche ag gabháil do mhaicréil. Chruaidh an oíche orthu ó thaobh na haimsire is chuadar chun fothana go slip an oileáin. Léim beirt amach ansan is fágadh duine amháin sa naomhóg. Tháinig tonn isteach san áit atá an falla cosanta san anois, is scuab sé an naomhóg agus an fear inti chun farraige. Ní raibh aon sábháil ar an bhfear san uisce is bhí tórramh ar a anam i nDún Chaoin cúpla lá ina dhiaidh. Ach sé a tharla dom bhuachaill ná gur scuabadh chun farraige é is gur séideadh síos trí chuan an Daingin é is tháinig sé i dtír in oileán Dairbhre, slán sábháilte. Sé a dúirt Tomás Ó Criomhthain féin ina leabhar An tOileánach ná “gurb iontach nár mhairbh an t-eagla féin é.”

Bhí Sam Hussey mar ghníomhaí ag an dTiarna Cork ar an oileán i ndeireadh an 18ú céad. Ní raibh sé ró-bhuíoch do mhuintir an oileáin. Bhídís ag iarraidh cíos a bhailiú ar an oileán is thagaidís isteach ar an slip is muintir an oileáin ar barra ag caitheamh síos na haon tsórt orthu. Mar sin bhí sé deacair cíos a bhailiú ar an oileán.

Ghlaoigh Sam Hussey, "social parasites, deceitful and grasping peasants" orthu. Ghlaoigh sé ar chabhair ar deireadh ó chomhlacht Sasanach go raibh áit acu ar An Fhianait in aice láimhe is tháinig an long Britomart (1890) anuas maidin amháin is thógadar naomhóga ón slip is thugadar isteach ‘on Daingean iad. Bhí ar mhuintir an oileáin dul isteach ‘on Daingean is a naomhóga a cheannach tharnais le cabhair ceannaitheoir éisc an Daingin.

Bhí díospóireacht ar feadh dhá uair a chloig i dtigh an Rialtais i Londain ar cad a tharla ar shlip an oileáin. Is mó deor a sileadh ar shlip an oileáin – daoine ag teacht is iad áthasach, is iad ag imeacht is iad go brónach.

Tá Ionad an Bhlascaoid i nDún Chaoin ar oscailt idir a 10 ar maidin go 6 trathnóna gach lá, iontráil deiridh 5.15.

The Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin is open from 10 to 6 daily, last admissions 5.15.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan

Some of you may have heard the story of Silas Marner who lived alone in the outskirts of a small village. He had a great love of money. Each night he counted his money and his life’s ambition was to add to it. There was little room for anything else in his life. The story goes that one night his money was stolen. While he was heartbroken he gradually found time for other things in life. He now had time for his neighbours and ended up taking care of a young child who had no one to care for her. His life became full of love and friendship. When the money was found years later he had little value for it. He had discovered new treasures.

One of the most valuable resources any of us has is time. The wealthiest person and the poorest have the same 24 hours in each day. It is good to ask ourselves how we use this precious resource? Who we spend our time with and what we spend our time doing is where our treasure lies. Is there time for others, time for those less fortunate, those in need of a kind word or a helping hand? Are there people in our lives that we consider valuable but find it difficult to make time for? The same can happen with our relationship with God. We might consider God an important part of our lives yet, when we look back to recent weeks, we may not have spent any time in prayer. It is through spending time in prayer and the sacraments that we discover the real treasure that is our faith. This time of the year we celebrate Graveyard Masses. Many of those who we pray for had great time for God. May God grant them eternal rest and may we too value the gift of faith that they have passed onto us.

Cemetery Masses:

Milltown 6.15pm – Dé hAoine 4ú Lúnasa. Ballinclár 7.30pm – Tuesday August 8th and

Reilig Caitlín 7.30pm – Aoine 11ú Lúnasa. We invite volunteers to participate in the Cemetery Masses by reading, prayer of the faithful and providing music/singing. Contact 066-9151208 if you are available.

Masses this weekend will be celebrated at the following times. Saturday evening at 6.15pm in St Marys, Dingle, at 7.30pm in St Caitlin’s Church, Ventry and at 7.30pm in Sacred Heart Church, Annascaul. Sunday morning at 10.00am in St Joseph’s Church, Inch, 10.00am in St John the Baptist Church Lispole as part of Feile Lios Póil (this Mass will be broadcast on RnG at 11.00am) and at 11.30am in St Marys Church, Dingle.

Reflection (from Fr Flor McCarthy SDB)

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a net cast into the sea which catches all kinds of fish.

When it is full, the fisherman hauls it ashore. Then he sits down and sorts out the good fish from the bad,

The good he keeps, the worthless he throws away.

In a sense, all of us are fishers. Each day we cast our net into the sea of life. And at the end of the day we have a catch, sometimes small, sometimes large. May we take time to sift through that catch. And may you, Lord, give us the wisdom to know what to keep and what to throw away. All Gods blessings at this time.

Dingle Notes

Richie Williams

WELCOME. Céad Míle Fáilte to all the visitors who will be coming to the Peninsula over the next few weeks with a busy August Weekend followed by the Annual Dingle Races Weekend forecast together with more summer like weather condition.

DINGLE FOOD FESTIVAL. Following a recent public meeting of interested parties it has been confirmed that the Dingle Food Festival will go ahead under the stewardship of recently retired restauranteur Martin Bealin. The Festival is scheduled for the weekend of Friday September 29th to Sunday October 1st and is an ideal opportunity for all local food outlets to display their produce and their premises and attract more business to our town in both the short and long term.

The Festival needs a huge team of volunteers and full details are available on the website ---martindinglehub.com. Already a greater number of Street Market Food Operators have expressed their intention in taking part this year which hopefully will ensure that all ticket holders will not have spare vouchers on the way home.

PEIL. Best of luck to the Kerry Ladies Football Team which includes a number of local footballers who take on Dublin in their All Ireland Final shortly. Some great performances so far this year so it would be great to finish the season with more silverware. Go nÉirí Leo.

Well done and many thanks for such great displays in both the National League and Championship to all the Kerry Mens Team Panel who just did not have that extra bit of luck and favourable bounce of the ball in the Final on Sunday last. Beidh Lá Eile Acu Gan Dabht!.

Its back to the club scene now and hopefully a long run in the County Championships for all West Kerry clubs this year.

BUSINESS. Following the recent closure of the Education Centre in Main Street, news is filtering through that the proprietors of more outlets, one in John Street and one in Orchard Lane are due to retire shortly. Lets hope all these outlets will find new people to continue to take over these much needed services which offer good regular income to the right operators.

Ventry Beach Group

On Saturday 12th August 2023 a group is getting together to clean Ventry Beach from 11-12.30 am. If you would like to join in meet at Ventry Car Park at 11 a.m. Please bring your own pickers. Bags and gloves will be provided. Orna Dunlevy 0872286533

The Business Chamber appeal to our readers to support for all our local outlets and services by SHOPPING LOCAL and supporting LOCAL EMPLOYMENT.

ROAD. SAFETY. The total Road Deaths in Ireland so far this year has passed the 100 mark. We appeal to all road users motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to please take more care at all times when venturing onto public roads of any kind and at any time of the day or night.

On a local theme the speed limit along The Wood area in particular needs to be reduced to 30km per hour as increased pedestrian usage has resulted in more danger of unnecessary life changing incidents there.

TELEVISION. Great media coverage recently for a number of local Business outlets including The Fish Box, Murphy's Ice Cream, Cáis, Dick Mack's and Solas all of whom featured prominently in a prime time Irish T.V. programme. Molaim Sibh Go Léir.!

Summer Vegetable and Chicken Salad with Tahini Dressing

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

to cook and assemble

Put a large pan (use a griddle pan if you have one) over medium to high heat, toss the courgette and green beans in some olive oil. Drain the vegetables and start cooking the courgettes first, once they have been cooking for about 3-4 minutes, add the green beans. Turn the half way through their cooking. Once they are cooked remove them and keep them warm while you cook the chicken. Remove the chicken from the marinade (discard the marinade). Cook the chicken over medium to high heat for about 3 minutes on each side. Pierce the chicken to make sure it is cooked. Once cooked remove it from the pan to rest to rest for about 3 minutes.

A tasteful salad that with brighten up any day, with or without the sunshine.

Allow the summer vegetables to take the centre stage. Here, I have used some courgette, green beans, fresh tomatoes and cucumber, now they are ripe and at their peak. I always try to keep flavours simple so we can savour every morsel. In this dish, the vegetables bring freshness, while the chicken and dressing brings a tanginess to everything.

I hope you love it.

Serves 4

Ingredients for the dressing

80g light tahini

½ lemon juiced

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

salt and pepper for the marinade

60ml olive oil

30ml red wine vinegar

½ lemon juiced

1 clove of garlic, crushed

salt and pepper for the rest

3 chicken fillets, sliced in half lengthways

1 courgette, sliced into 1cm discs

handful of green beans

3 large tomatoes, quartered and seeds removed

1 clove of garlic, crushed

½ cucumber, seeds removed and sliced

handful of salad leaves, washed and dried

salt and pepper

Method for the dressing

Mix the tahini in a bowl, whisk in the lemon, garlic and mustard. Whisk this together add a little water if the mixture is too thick. Season with salt and pepper and leave aside.

to marinate chicken

Mix the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl. Add the chicken strip and allow to marinate for an hour (if you have time, marinade it overnight and keep it in the fridge).

Add the courgette, green beans, tomatoes, garlic, cucumber and salad leaves to a bowl. Add some dressing and mix well. Taste and season. Divide the salad between four bowls, slice the chicken, place over the salad and drizzle some dressing over the chicken.

Serve immediately.

It’s All In The Mind

The Story of Two Wolves

The notion that ’life is happening for you and not to you’, doesn't always ring true. We can feel that our lives have been set on a course and we don't get much say in the trajectory it takes. So much seems beyond our control, and naturally, we take it all personally - because it all impacts us. Sometimes we even take the weather personally - because we are personally affected by it!

It can be hard to swallow the arbitrary nature and sometimes heartbreaking unfairness of events that unfold for each of us, albeit to varying degrees, throughout the course of our lives. We want to believe the house of cards we have built is structurally sound. We are bitterly disappointed each time it collapses.

Bad things happen and it’s not our fault. This fact is unavoidable. But it is unpalatable and it is in our nature to search for ways to make it more digestible. When we feel we are beaten down by our circumstances and faced with life's challenges, especially when they are not expected, the mind kicks into overdrive and the system is flooded with many conflicting thoughts and emotions. We often end up finding someone or something to blame and allow anger and resentment to fester. The underlying feelings of frustration and powerlessness are often reframed into this more manageable sense of antagonism and blame : and so we set the scene for conflict and polarization and more suffering.

We cannot control our circumstances and all our efforts to avoid the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ will come to nothing. By holding others responsible for making us feel a certain way, either negative or positive, we are no longer taking responsibility for our own experiences and emotions. We inevitably end up only adding to the pain.

The mistake we make is believing that we are powerless: it is not true that we have no agency. Our power lies in our freedom to choose how we respond to life's challenges.

This is the story of 2 Wolves:

One day a young Cherokee boy came to his Grandfather, filled with anger at another boy who had done him an injustice.

The old grandfather said to his grandson ” I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have done me wrong, anger for injustices I have seen”

“Let me tell you a story”

“A fight is going on inside of me” he says to the boy “It’s a terrible fight between two wolves. The black one is evil- he is full of rage , envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. He fights everyone, all the time for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so strong. It is helpless anger, because his anger will change nothing”

He continued, “ The white wolf is good- he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith” “ He does no harm,. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when none was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so and in the right way. The same struggle is going on inside of you - and inside of every other person too”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather “ Which one will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “ The one you feed”

This parable is a powerful reminder that, in fact, we have more power over our experience and emotions than we think we do. We choose which wolf to feed. While we recognise the negative thoughts and emotions inside of us, we don’t have to attach to them or continue to give them attention. We don’t have to listen to our inner critic telling us we are not good enough. We can choose not to feed the wolf who is telling us that we are not loved or understood, who is isolating us from those around us. You can exercise your freedom of choice by deciding to nourish the other wolf, the voice of common humanity and compassion, cultivating wisdom and hope in the face of fear and suffering, and forgiveness in an imperfect world. Both wolves live within us all and are constantly struggling for our attention but the black wolf is hungrier and more voracious and so it’s easy to feed him. The white wolf, being shyer and picky, requires more effort and more patience to feed..but the more you feed him the better equipped you will be to handle life’s challenges.

As the grandfather explained in the story, when we encounter difficulties the way we choose to react is really what matters : both wolves are always present - do you surrender to the feelings of envy, self-pity, pride and blame or do you cultivate the thoughts of compassion, love, peace in a world where these things are in very short supply…do we really need more fear, hatred and ignorance?

You have the power to choose.

Padraig Spillane

Ardrinane, Annascaul 29th July 2022

As we lovingly remember and greatly miss Padraig on his first anniversary, Suzanne, Oisín, Fia, Fionn & extended family would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness, shown to us in the past year.

We offer our thanks and gratitude to all those kind people who visited our home, attended the funeral home, funeral and burial and the many who watched online. For those who telephoned, delivered food, travelled long distances, made donations to Recovery Haven Cancer Support House, sent flowers, cards, gifts and for the many messages of condolences we received since Padraig’s passing, we are truly grateful.

Thank you to those who formed a guard of honour on his final journey. Our sincere thanks to Fr. Michael Moynihan for celebrating Padraig’s funeral Mass and to Donal O’Connor for his kindness and guidance following Padraig’s passing.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

Cromane News

Jane Casey

Cromane GAA

NEW JERSEYS: Many thanks to Brian and Grainne Keary of Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant and Patie and Noreen O’Sullivan of Cromane Bay Shellfish both local businesses have sponsored new jerseys and new shorts for our senior team. Many thanks to both families for their continued backing of Cromane GAA Club. The new O’Neills jerseys were presented last Tuesday evening at Cromane GAA pitch. Our new white jerseys will be worn in our upcoming County Junior Football Championship in Cromane against Scartaglin.

SENIORS: The Cromane senior men are preparing for the first round of the County Junior Football Championship. We are in Group 1 along with Scartaglin, Finuge, and Tarbert. Round 1 is on the first weekend of August when we are at home to Scartaglin.

MID KERRY MINORS: Five Cromane players were part of the Mid Kerry minor panel that drew with West Kerry (1-13 apiece) in the second group game of the county championship on Monday evening last.

Ben Sugrue, Conor Hayes and Jack McGrath all started and performed well. Jamie Casey and Liam Hayes are also part of the panel along with a quartet of their GGC colleagues.

This result means that Mid Kerry have one point from their first two group games, having lost to Austin Stacks in their opening group game.

UNDER-15s: Under-15 Division 4 County League final:

Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane

(GGC) 5-9, Castleisland Desmonds 3-9

The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-15s travelled to Castleisland for this county league final. The venue was decided by a toss of a coin.

The GGC lads turned in a fine performance to clinch the Central Region Under 15 Division 4 title. There was excellent football played throughout with GGC leading by 4-4 to 1-2 at the break.

The home side made a comeback in the second half but the GGC lads held out for a deserving win on a score line of 5-9 to 3-9. Well done to all the players and coaches.

The under-15s had qualified for the final after a fine win over Dingle, 6-17 to 1-13, the previous Wednesday evening. Well done on a fine campaign to the team and their management group.

Team: Daragh O’Connor; Cian Poff, Eddie O’Sullivan, Evan Keary; Ben O’Shea, Aiden Sheehan, Dara O’Connor; Tadhg O’Sullivan, Gio McCarthy; Diego Andreatta, Paddy O’Sullivan, Oran Sheehan; Sam Kelly, Sean Doherty, Martin Zadojenko. Subs: Cathal Clifford, Daniel Teahan, Daniel Malone, DJ Poff, Ronan McDonnell, Alex Keary.

UNDER-13s: Well done to the GGC under-13 maroon team. They had a great win over Milltown-Castlemaine in Milltown. Result: GGC 4-10, Milltown/Castlemaine 2-5.

As a result of this win, the team topped their group in the Central League after three wins from their three games. We now await our opposition in the Central League semi-final. Well done all, great football played.

CAMP FAIR

Camp Sheep Fair falls on Monday 18th September. A traditional sheep fair was held in the village, going back many centuries to the time of Lord Ventry. Lord Ventry brought the scotch sheep breed from his native Scotland to Camp and these sheep, now almost a rare breed, are still grazing on our hills today. Lord Ventry's farm in Beheenagh carried 1000 ewes and a man called Henderson managed the flock in the late 1800’s.

At one time there were 5 fairs in the course of the year in Camp starting off with a cattle and Sheep on 26th January and ending with the famous September Sheep Fair which has survived to the present day. As we all know nothing ever stays the same and Camp Fair has changed over the years, particularly nowadays with farmers using the mart in order to sell their stock. However Camp Fair has survived due to the support of local sheep farmers in Camp and West Kerry who put down pens and buy and sell sheep on the day.

And of course those who come every year from far and near to enjoy the fun and meetup with

old friends. Jacinta O'Brien started Camp Fair Pet Show a few years ago and it is indeed a highlight of the afternoon outside O'Dwyer's.

And anyone passing the village will enjoy Gerard Mulligan's one man band in the morning and in the evening outside Ashe's, Gerard our Master of Ceremonies, supported by local musicians, always entertaining late into Camp Fair night.

Last year Jimmy O'Dwyer sponsored trophies for pens of sheep owned by young sheep farmers, boys and girls, u/18. It was a huge success and we are all dependent on the youth of Camp to keep Camp Fair going into the future, they are the next generation of Camp sheep farmers. We welcome our local Aughacasla school parents too, who are planning a few activities this year, more about that later.

And on the Sunday, weekend of Camp Fair a Vintage Car Rally is also planned at The Junction Bar. So the planning begins for Camp Fair 2023!

In the meantime please put Monday September 18th. In your diary, a great day in Camp every year. Keep an eye out here for further updates.

OBITUARY

were in fact Thomas’ parents. RIP. Jer narrated as the family brought the gifts to the altar, a hand shears, wool and other items, symbols of a hardworking father and the great family man his father was.

Adrian O'Donnell concluded with a lovely poem and some wonderful memories of his Uncle Thomas from his early childhood visiting Slieve West, the trips to the bog and going to fairs and the fun and the crack.

Thomas was a great sheepman too and a rail of sheep awaited the funeral cortege at Inch as Thomas made his final journey to his place of rest in Inch Cemetary. Deepest sympathy is extended to all the family. Rest In Peace, Thomas.

Deepest Sympathy is also extended to George Edwards, Camp and all the family on the passing of his sister Marian Lambe, nee Edwards, Liosdara, Oakpark, Tralee. Rest In Peace.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

Thomas O’Donnell of Slieve West, Camp, Co. Kerry, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on 29th July, son of the late Thomas & Kathleen, beloved husband of Maura, dearest father of Thomas, John, Pat, Christina, Jer, Michael, Kathleen, James, Margaret, Brendan, Mary, Elizabeth, Connie, Sheila & Maurice and brother of Mary, Pat and the late Michael, Betty, Dora, Jerry, Sean & Peggy.

PLUMBING & HEATING

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Sadly missed by his loving family, his eighteen grandchildren, great grandson, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, relatives and many friends.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill celebrated the requiem Mass for Thomas at St. Mary's Church, Camp on Tuesday, the Church where many generations of the family attended Mass down through the years.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

True testament to this was that the vestment which Fr. Mulvihill wore at Mass was donated to St. Mary's by Tom Mike O'Donnell and his wife Kathleen, Slieve West; the tag was still on the garment. Tom Mike and Kathleen

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Ó Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Bhí toradh chraobh caide na hÉireann na bhfear mar an sean- ráiteas ‘Throid na Gaeil go maith ach buadh ortha sa deireadh’. N’fheadar ‘n domhain conas ná cuireadh duine nó beirt do imreoirí Áth Cliath don ngort. Leagadh imreoir ó Chiarraí in aice báide Bhleá Cliath, ní tharla dada. Buaileadh buillí eile agus scaoileadh leo. Sin a cheapas pé fíor no gearrradharcach. Má bhís ag féachaint ar an gcluiche ní gá dhuit puinn aird a thabhairt ar a bhfuil á rá agam. An bhfuil beagnach cách bréan dos na Ciarraigh agus a bhfuil do chraobhacha buaite acu. Ná raibh mí-ádh dearg ar Dhaithí ó Clúmháin, Fossa ach fuair sé agus a dhearthair 3pt an duine. Bhí a dheartháir ar fheabhas. Dar liom go mba dhearmad Paul Geaney [1-1] a thógaint amach, óir bhí se ag imirt go diail. Ba cheart Brian Ó Beaglaoi a bheith ar an bpáirc ó thosach. Tá gíoscán fiacla ag baint leis an dtoradh. N’fheadar cén bhrí atá leis an sall agus anall ag peasail. Bhí fear amháin ag lapadáil leis an liathróid tamall beag óna bhaide ach ghaibh Bleá Cliath chuige leag an liathróid uaidh agus ghnóthaigh pointe bobach bog. Bhuail Ciarraí an chraobh ar dhá thaobh an bháide.

Peil na mban

N’fheadar conas a dhéanfaidh mná Chiarraí sa chraobh uile Éireann in aghaidh Bhleá Cliath. Bhíodar ar fheabhas in aghaidh Mhaigh Eo. Tá tine chreasa le imreoirí Bhleá Cliath ach fágfam fé na mná seo againne é, an tine sin a mhúchadh.

Nách diail an t-imreoir Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. Ghnóthaigh sí 1-10 , gaisce thar ghaisce. Bail ó Dhia uirthí. Ná beadh sé go diail dá mbuafadh siad ar na Jeaicíní. Bhuaidh na Jeaicíní go bog ar fhoireann mhaith Chorcaí.

Bhíos ag cuimhneamh le déanaí ar Mhaigh Eo, na fearaibh. Tá trí chraobh Éireann acu, an ceann deireannach i 1951 agus chuig cinn déag gur buadh ortha sa chraobh. An b’í guí an tsagairt nó an dearg mhí-ádh atá luaite le fearaibh chumasacha Mhaigh Eó.

Aimsir

Conas ná fuil aon solathar déanta leis an gcarbóin a chlaoi cuid mhaith san aer. Caint agus bleadar. Má ta saineolaithe ábalta diúracáin a chur dtí an nGealaigh Mars, 7rl conas in ainm an donais ná fuil foirmle réitithe fós acu leis an ngalar a shárú. Dúradh sa tSeapáin dhá bhliain déag ó shoin ná beadh aon dua ag saineothe an aimsir a lámhseáil agus sinn agus an saol mór a shábháil ó thine gan sárú!! An é gur glas atá ar a bpus!

Caoire agus stoc

Chonac ar nuachtán an lá cheanna go raibh praghas uan titithe 35 c an Kilo. Ainneoin san dar le fear an eolais ná leanfaidh an titim agus go raibh an chuma ar an margadh go mbeadh bliain mhaith ag stoc agus caoire. Is gnáthaí go mbíonn borradh beag ar na phraghasanna an dtaca seo. Súil againn go bhfuil an ceart aige.

Trump

Ní síos atá líon lucht leanúna Trump ag dul ach ag méadú. Ach an bhfaghaidh sé príosún rud seans a tharraingeodh suathadh mór.

Go macánta mheasfá go bhfuil an dlí i Meiriceá casta bun-os-cionn. Bíonn óid éigin ag lucht teaspaigh bheith ag síor ghearán cosúil leis na Francaigh ná bíonn uatha ach iarraim cúis bheith ag léirsiú.

Bás

Adhlacadh luaithreach Pháid Ó Mainín ó Bhaile ‘n Fhiadhnaigh i Reilig Bhaile Uí Bhoithín tréis Aifrinn i Seipeal Naomh Uinsinn ar an mBuailtín Dé Luain. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Anne agus a gcúigear clainne Seán, Mícheál, Pádraig, Máirín agus Céití, gaolta agus cairde.

Chuaidh Páid dtí Springfield Mass sa bhliain 1960. Tamall ina dhiaidh sin, 1966, phós sé Áine Ní Mhóráin. Mhaireadar go sásta. Thugadh Páid sciúrd coitianta ar an sean-fhód, agus is mó scéal grinn a chuala uaidh anseo agus nuair a bhinn i Meiriceá. Caithfead a rá go rabhas an- mhór leis i gcaitheamh na mblianta. Solas gliondarach na bhFlaitheas ag a anam geanúil cuideachtúil. Bhí an- dhúil sa chaid aige, gan dabht caid Ciarraí agus na Gaeltachta.

Fuair Áine Ní Chinnnéide ón mBuailtín agus Cam Dubh Abha na Scáil bás an tseachtain seo caite i dtigh banaltrais Fatima. Chaith Áine seal sna Mná Rialta. Tréis tamaill mhaith chuaidh sí in órd tostach. Dfhág sí é sin agus chaith seal ina banaltra sar a bhfill sí ar Cham Dubh. Tréis Aifrinn i Séipeal Abha na Scáil adhlacadh í, i Reilig Bhaile Uí Bhoithín. Méala mór a bás dá deirfiúr an tsiúir Bríde, a gaolta agus a cairde. Beannacht Dé lena hanam. Fuair Joan Wright ó Bharr an Daingin bás la déanaí. Méala mór a bás dá céile Ron, beirt mhac Seán agus Mícheál agus a gcéilí, Ikuko agus Kay, garchlann, gaolta agus cairde. Bhí an- thabhairt amach i Joan, bean caoin cáirdiúil. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam.

Áiseanna

Tá droch scéal againn go bhfuil Siopa Búistéara Uí Chinnéide agus Siopa glasraí, measa 7rl Uí Dhufaigh ag dúnadh sa Daingean. Cailliúint mór. Le déanaí fógraíodh go raibh Siopa an Bhuailtín ag dúnadh.
