Spilling the Beans on Legumes and Pulses!

Beans, often overlooked in modern cooking, are nutritional powerhouses with a remarkable array of healthy benefits. If you could slap health claims on a can of beans, it would read like a miracle cure: reduces cholesterol, lowers the risk of heart disease, prostate and colorectal cancer, breast cancer, helps regulate glucose imbalances associated with type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dan Buettner, founder of the Blue Zones, attributes longevity and lifelong good health to the power of a daily dose of beans. Yet, here in our “sophisticated” world, beans are not worthy enough to be included in our culinary repetoire. More the pity for us!

Before I go any further let’s demystify the world of beans, legumes and pulses;

Beans: Beans are a type of legume. They are seeds that grow inside pods and come in various shapes and colours, like black beans, kidney beans, and pinto beans.

Legumes: Legumes are a broader category that includes beans, peas, lentils, and peanuts. They are whole plants that produce seeds in pods, such as beans and are known for their high protein content. Peanuts belong to this group too, go figure!

Pulses: Pulses are a subset of legumes. They are dried seeds from legume plants, such as dried peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Pulses are typically used in cooking after they have been dried.

So, in a nutshell (or a bean pod), all beans are legumes, but not all legumes are beans, and pulses are a specific type of dried legume. Got it? Now let’s continue…

The impressive health benefits of beans, as well as other legumes like peas and lentils, stem from their rich nutrient content. Legumes are a dietary staple worldwide (except in Ireland, UK and USA) and are renowned for being one of the best sources of soluble fibre. They are low in fat yet high in quality protein, making them a health-saving combination. But there’s more to this group of foods than meets the eye.

All beans, legumes and pulses are packed with essential nutrients, including folate, manganese, B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium , iron, copper and a host of antioxidants. Soybeans stand out

Mike Mangan Carpentry Services

for their plant sterols that help reduce cholesterol and isoflavones that mitigate the effects of oestrogen fluctuations seen in PMS and menopause. However, all the three musketeers (beans, legumes and pulses) contain these nutrients to varying degrees, depending on their variety, colour and origin.

Folate, sometimes referred to as vitamin B9, is found abundantly in black beans and dark green lentils. Folic acid is the synthetic, stable form used in supplements and fortified foods, while folate refers to the natural forms found in food. Folate (or folic acid) is especially crucial for women planning to conceive and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in babies. It is a vital nutrient involved in DNA synthesis, cell growth and the metabolism of amino acids in all stages of life and big player in protecting our cognitive function as we age.

Soluble fibre in beans plays a vital role in lowering harmful LDL cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. The old saying "beans, beans are good for the heart" still holds true! By slowing down carbohydrate absorption, soluble fibre in beans helps stabilize blood glucose levels, a boon for people with diabetes. Additionally, soluble fibre binds to toxins in the body, aiding in their safe elimination via the bowel. Beans also provide substantial insoluble fibre, which promotes digestive health, nourish our microbiome and prevents constipation.

Both types of fibre are lacking in the modern diet, with most adults falling far short of the recommended daily intake. Incorporating a bowl of beans or lentils into your daily meals can help bridge this nutritional gap and contribute to long-term health.

Beans are a dieter's best friend, promoting a sense of fullness and reducing hunger. Their low glycaemic index helps curb sugar cravings and the rollercoaster ride that often accompanies the consumption of highly refined grains such as white bread, pasta, corn and rice products. Substituting these type of carbohydrates with beans, peas, or lentils, combined with whole grains, provides an amino acid profile comparable to animal protein but with significant benefits for you, for animal welfare and the environment.

Concerns about excessive flatulence are a common deterrent to including more of these powerhouses in the diet. While it's true they can initially increase gas production due to their fibre content, this is often a temporary side effect. The digestive system adjusts to breaking down this fibre over time, reducing gas-related issues. Properly soaking dried beans for 12-24 hours before cooking can significantly minimize gas production, as germination naturally breaks down some indigestible fibres. Adding strips of kombu (kelp) seaweed to the cooking water can enhance digestibility and flavour. If problems persist, digestive enzymes like papaya or bromelain may help reduce gas.

With many of us mindful of budget constraints, beans, legumes and pulses offer a cost-effective way to maintain good health and make the most of your budget. This is particularly valuable for families and students looking for healthy low-cost food staples. These foods are versatile and affordable, even in canned form, though it's essential to watch out for added sugar and salt. As the cooler seasons approach, there's no better time to embrace the wholesome goodness of beans, legumes and pulses. They can easily be incorporated into soups, stews, curries, casseroles, warm salads, and dips, making them a culinary gem. So, whether you're looking to boost your health or your budget, this triumphant trio have you covered. Enjoy!

Single-use Tableware off the Menu at Dingle Food Festival

tableware from home to use at the festival. Food outlets will be happy to serve their tastings to people on their brought tableware. There will also be a festival bowl and cutlery set on sale for €5 available to buy at the festival office and at the festival taste trail ticket booths/outlets.

In a multi-pronged approach to significantly reduce the amount of waste produced over the Festival weekend:

A stylish festival pack will also be for sale for €15 at the festival office. The pack contains a branded plate, bowl, cup and cutlery made from durable eco-friendly bamboo in an organic cotton carry bag.

The 2023 Dingle Food Festival will take place from Friday 29th September to Sunday 1st October, with the focus this year on zero waste. Building on the success of last year’s initiative, the Dingle Food Festival is moving closer to its aim of being completely waste free by 2024. Local sustainability group, Transition Corca Duibhne (TCD) are working again with Festival organisers to promote the simple message of reducing and reusing. ‘Simple choices can reduce waste to almost nothing’ says Darach Ó Murchú, TCD project coordinator. 'We managed a 25% reduction in waste going to landfill at last year's festival, this year we hope to triple that and reach 75%, and to be 100% zero waste in 2024'

To make it happen visitors to this year's festival goers are advised to BYOB - Bring Your Own Bowl or plate and cutlery. Festival goers will receive a free Taste Trail green-ticket for every ticket book bought when they bring their own

Rinse & Re-use – rinse stations will be conveniently located around the festival for cleaning dishes between tastings.

Waste segregation stations will be located around the town, each attended by volunteers offering advice on recycling and helping people to chose the right bins for their waste. For more advice and tips on waste reduction at the festival and at home visit the TCD information stand which will be open and serving tea all weekend.

With the aim of reducing single use plastic bottles during the Festival, this year there will also be a water refill tap at each of the rinse stations where you can fill your water bottles for free - thanks to funding from Kerry County Council.

TCD have put a call out for volunteers to help with the initiative for a couple of hours during the weekend. Contact Darach on 087-2153758 or email ttcorcadhuibhne@gmail.com or via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ plasticfreedingle/

“Being a zero waste festival is not going to be an easy task, but we are committed to this journey and when the Dingle Festival achieves this goal it will be the first major food festival to do so” says this year's festival director, Martin Bealin. Highlights of this year’s festival will have the much loved Taste Trail, where festival goers get to sample food delights throughout the picturesque town, including Dingle Sushi, Mini Prawn Cocktail from The Fish Box and Chocolate Macarons from Murphy’s Ice Cream. Bia Dingle, the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network, will be showcasing food produced on the Dingle Peninsula. There will be cookery demonstrations, farmers market, the Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards, street entertainment, workshops, kids activities and lots more. Check out www. dinglefood.com

Last weekend Minister Jack Chambers was in West Kerry to present the members of Dingle Coastguard Station with a framed "Proof of Service at a Wreck Token" and a certificate to recognise their invaluable work.

The tokens presented are a replica of that which were awarded to coastguard members who assisted shipwrecks between 1877 and 1972. In those years the token was issued by the officer in charge and could later be exchanged for a small payment. To mark the bicentenary of the formation of the Coastguard every registered volunteer in the country was presented with a limited edition framed token, with each one being personal to the individual volunteer including his/her enrolment number.

1911 Census Miscellany in West Kerry

Ted Creedon

This is the third and final article on miscellaneous matters from the 1911 Census which was recorded on Sunday, April 2nd. Journeymen.

John Ferriter, 42, was a tailor living on Upper Main Street with his wife Mary, 39. The couple had six children and had been married for eleven years. Also in the house was an apprentice tailor named Thomas Ferriter, 16, who may have been related to the family.

There were two other men in the house on Census night. They were James McCarthy, 22, and Dan Kevane, 21, who were recorded as ‘Journeymen Tailors’. They were not boarders or lodgers.

A journeyman tailor was one who had completed seven years as an apprentice to a tailor. Journey comes from the French journée – work for a full day which gave them the right to charge a fee for the day’s work.

In the 18th century the hours of a working day for a journeyman tailor were from 6am to 8pm, almost twice the current working day. No wonder we have unions.

The next step in the ladder was Master Tailor. For instance, John Ryal, 47, from The Mall in Dingle was a ‘Master Tailor’, according to the 1911 Census. His son John, 16, was an apprentice tailor. Foreman.

John Corcorain, 30, was a boarder in the home of the Great Blasket Island postman Patrick Keane, 55, who was a widower. Patrick’s son John, 26, was a ‘Fisherman’ and his daughter Kate, 24, also lived in the home.

So what of Mr. Corcorain? What was he doing on the island in April, 1911? He was from Mayo, didn’t speak Irish according to his Census form and gave his occupation as ‘Foreman’. That was followed by three ghostly letters which appear to be ‘C.D.B.’. However, it is possible he was the foreman of works under the Congested Districts Board.

There were no other boarders on the island except for Kate Manning, assistant teacher to School Principal Thomas Savage. So whatever work was being done under the foreman it must have involved islanders. Better ask someone……. And no better man than Micheál de Mordha. It turns out that John Corcorain was the foreman on the building of five new houses for the Congested District Board. Peig Sayers moved into one of them and Tomás Ó Criomhthain also got one.

The work began in 1909 and was completed in 1911. Corcorain refused to speak Irish initially to the island workmen which didn’t go down well but eventually he had no option but to learn and converse in the language, according to Micheál. Medical Officer.

Patrick Farris, 28, was a boarder in the home of Catherine O’Donnell, 57, a widow and a shopkeeper in Castlegregory Town. Farris gave his occupation as ‘Medical Officer of Health’. Reports from medical officers of health contained information on births, deaths, and disease as well as information on communities and daily life.

Mason.

A 75 year-old widow living on Green Street gave her name on the 1911 Census form as E. A. Mason but on the 1901 form she was Elizabeth and aged 68 then. She had four children; Amelia, 34, who was a single farmer and a land agent, Kate, 31, Francis, 34, was a ‘Horse Trainer’ and Frances, 24, was the youngest. Why are they included in this article? While the mother was a ‘Roman Catholic’ all the children were ‘Church of Ireland’.

Common Carrier

James Kennedy, 56, lived on Main Street with his wife Mary, 45. He was a ‘Common carrier’. Seven of their eleven children lived at home. The eldest of them, John, 27, was also a common carrier and the others were all students. So, what is a common carrier? They were people who were in business for themselves and who transported goods, freight or people for a fee.

Farmeress

Marianne Burke, 57, lived in Kilfountain and recorded her occupation as ‘Farmeress’. Her son John, 33, was a ‘Farmer and a Mill right’ (sic). He was married to Katherina, 32, and they had a seven month-old daughter who was named ‘Mary an’. John’s sister was Louise Frances who was 28, and single.

While Marianne and Louise Frances were members of the ‘Church of Ireland’ John and family were recorded as being members of ‘Tho Church of Ireland’. That is either something unknown to this writer or a mistake. What did the enumerator, Constable J. McNamara make of it? Should it have been ‘The Church of Ireland’.

Thomas Crehin

Thomas Crehin was a widower who lived in the home of farmer Patrick Connor, 40, and his wife Nora, 42, in Ballinasig, Dingle. Thomas Crehin’s occupation is given as ‘Farm Servant’ – he was still working in his 85th year – they were tough men back then!

Note: in the last issue there was a reference to a Coonels Brosnan living in Quay Lane, Dingle. He was, in fact, Cornelius Brosnan the father of Noel Brosnan who lives in the same lane and who celebrated his 90th birthday last December.

An end and a beginning

We have absolutely thrashed the 1901 and 1911 Censuses over the past couple of years and this is the final article. But in the next issue we’ll be starting something new and different.

This new series will be called ‘Once upon a Time in the Southwest’ and will retrieve news stories from the early 18th century to the 1920s from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) mainly. The Southwest covers Clare, Kerry and Cork officially. The focus will be on Kerry with an occasional item from the other two counties.

Free Cancer Survivorship Programme In

Dingle

Following on from the success of its Cancer Thrive & Survive programme in Dingle last September, cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, is bringing the popular course back to West Kerry in September.

The six-week programme, run in association with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), is designed to help participants with the transition from active treatment to living well with, and beyond cancer.

Beginning on September 21st, the free programme will run at Dingle Primary Care Building (Dingle Hospital) every Thursday morning for six weeks, from 10.30am to 1pm, and is limited to 12 people.

The model is based on self-management, with information and support, and includes modules on well-being, cancer prevention, information on long term consequences of treatment and psycho-social support.

This hugely programme has been offered at Recovery Haven Kerry’s Tralee centre on a number of previous occasions, and this is the second time the charity is offering the programme in Dingle.

Programme leader and Recovery Haven Client Services Co-ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney, explained that the course helps and empowers patients as they finish treatment and transition into the survivorship period.

The programme includes sessions that address the recovery of selfconfidence, adjustment to a changed self, and confidence to self-manage cancer-related problems and to promote recovery, well-being and successful transition to survivorship, following a cancer diagnosis.

News from Dingle Hub

We are delighted to say that from the Dairy Famers SEC have chosen their PV supplier. We will now see 65 famers on the Corca Dhuibhne peninsula get PV panels in the next few months. This means that a large percentage of their electricity will be generated on their own farms and reducing their carbon emissions by 155,490kg CO2 per year. Well done Dinny Galvin, Catherina Fallon, steering group and everyone involved for all their work.

Corca Dhuibhne Tourism & Hospitability SEC

We have started pulling some early findings from businesses who have filled out their questionnaires and have done their SEAI energy audits. Barry from DC6 Six technologies who is working on the project has said that a typical restaurant on the peninsula can reduce emission by 22% and save 25% on their energy bills. Total payback if all these actions are undertaken is less than 5 years when the SEAI grants are accounted for.

Restaurant A

We are doing a final push to get businesses on the peninsula to fill their energy questionnaire and get involved in this project. The energy questionnaire is so important to give us an understanding of your business. Without knowing where and how you use your electricity, gas and oil we can’t make recommendations for your business.

We have two energy monitors to give away. These energy monitors are worth €2,000 and kindly paid for by Fáilte Ireland. They will give you in-depth knowledge into what is using up so much power in your kitchen, bar, café. Fill out your energy questionnaire to be in with a chance to win.

If you are in the tourism industry on the Dingle peninsula, scan this to get to the energy questionnaire and be part of this exciting project.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula

Caroline Boland

This editions news features the Dingle Peninsula Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase at The Big E – New England’s State Fair which attracted 1.67 million visitors in 2022. The importance of the Dingle Peninsula being at The Big E originates from The Blasket and West Kerry families and relations – West Kerry’s Diaspora –who immigrated to Hungry Hill in Springfield from the 1800’s and today, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations come to connect at the Showcase with their stories, their hopes to connect once again with the Dingle Peninsula. This is a significant part of the magic that happens at The Big E which until until October 1st!

The immense impact of West Kerry’s Diaspora is found in Corca Dhuibhne’s 5 times Olympic Medal winner, Denis Fenton, who was born in Baile an Chótaigh, Ceann Trá in 1888. He immigrated to Massachusetts in 1906 to his Aunt Ellie Fenton in Fitchburg, where his 3 sisters settled in Fitchburg and his 3 brothers settling in Springfield. As an US Army soldier, he won 3 Olympic Gold Medals and 1 Bronze in 1920 for sharp shooting, followed by his final Bronze Medal in 1924. His family ties remain through the O’Sullivans in Baile an tSléibhte and parish of Ceann Trá with plans afoot for a 100th Anniversary Commemoration of his outstanding achievements in spring 2024.

Our crafters, vendors, and education and tourism representatives representing the Dingle Peninsula’s culture, language and artistry will

again join The Big E to celebrate our Sister City relationship and historical ties with West Springfield and the Western Massachusetts region,” said Caroline Boland of Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance.

Big E visitors can throw Irish pottery; learn a crystal designer’s inspiration for a bowl presented to the White House, hear which stars wear a renowned Irish jeweller’s creations, learn Irish, subscribe to get Irish goods monthly, buy linen, clothing, musical instruments and sample some spirits.

Irish music performers will also be on stages during the Fair’s first week, including the Dingle Peninsula’s famous singer/songwriter/recording artist Éilís Kennedy at the Irish Cultural Center on Tuesday, Sept. 19, while the Saturday, Sept. 16, parade will feature a performance by the Massachusetts State Police Pipe Band.

Holyoke and Springfield, Mass., also have Sister City relationships with Tralee with Mayor of Tralee Municipal District and Leas Cathaoirleach of Kerry, Councillor Johnnie Wall also participating in this official visit to the Greater Springfield area.

In addition, four-time Emmy Award winner Mickela Mallozzi, host of the travel series Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi that airs on PBS, will appear at the Dingle Pavilion and other related Big E stages throughout Saturday, Sept. 16, for a series of dance and cultural presentations with the Dingle Peninsula’s cultural artist and Irish dancer, Jamie Ó Flannúra.

Businesses, craftsman and organizations

representing the Dingle Peninsula at The Big E include: Brian de Staic Jewellery, Celtic Gift House, Dingle Crystal, Louis Mulcahy Pottery, Sacred Heart University – SHU in Dingle, Dingle Distillery, My Ireland Box, Dingle Linens, Irish Cultural Centre of Western New England, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance representing 170 Businesses and Festivals across the Dingle Peninsula, and Western Mass Tourism Organisation.

Cuimhneachán Bliantúil Eibhlín

Le déanaí, deineadh Aifreann Cuimhneachán Bliantúil Eibhlín Mhic Gearailt, Bóthar Buí agus Baile na nGall, a cheiliúradh i Séipéal na Carraige. Geibheann Muintir Mhic Gearailt agus Mhic Eoin buíochas ó chroí leo seo ar fad a chabhraidh in aon tslí le ócáid speisialta a dhéanamh den Aifreann. Míle buíochas leis an Sagart Paróiste, an tAthair Eoghan Ó Cadhla a bhí i mbun an tsearmannais, le lucht léite na léachtaí agus guíonna an phobail, leis na Ministéirí Eocairisteacha agus le daoine a thaisteal ó chian is ó chógar le bheith i láthair. Buíochas speisialta don gcór a bhí go binn ag an Aifreann agus le Páidí Mhárthain Mac Gearailt a thug deora chun súile scata ach ar chan sé go taibhseach an t-amhrán Cailín na Gruaige Doinne. Ach ní hé sin ach é seo, ar an Sathran, an 19 lá de Lúnasa, bliain go dtí an lá a shleamhnaigh Eibhlín uainn, d’eagraigh a cairde, ócáid bheag díolachán cístí i Halla na Feothanaí i gcuimhne Eibhlín a bhí ana thugtha d’ócáidí dá leithéid ar mhaithe le carthannachtaí éagsúla. Ócáid bheag, mar a dúrt, ach mar a deir mo chomharsa Anne Marie liom i gcónaí, Is minic a bhíonn beag, mór, agus is amhlaidh a bhí sa chás seo. A leithéid d’ócáid, de bhailiú cístí milse dos na haon sórt agus a leithéid de shlua daoine a tháinig, a d’fhan agus a d’ól cupa tae agus go raibh tráthnóna cuileachtain acu ar fad i bhfochair a chéile. Buíochas ar leith don bhfoireann oibre a chabhraigh leis an ócáid a eagrú agus a chur i gcrích, go háirithe, na Ceannródaithe, Sláine, Helen, Elaine agus Edel i Raidió na Gaeltachta agus a gcriú, le Coiste an Halla, lucht bronnta duaiseanna agus lucht síntiúisí a bhí go fial. Message from Fr Michael

Weather forecasting has saved the lives of many. People who receive a warning of a hurricane or floods have the opportunity to escape. However, people react differently. Some respond and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety, others feel that the warning is a bit too severe, and they will be able to sit it out while others ignore the warning completely. The response to the psalm on last weekend was ‘Oh that today you would listen to his voice, harden not your hearts.’ This was the plea of the psalmist written thousands of years ago. He was pleading with the people to listen to God with an open heart. We hear the same plea.

There is an urgency about the plea. Today. Not tomorrow, not soon, not when it is more convenient, not when the time is right. Listen to his voice. What is that voice telling us? The readings at Mass last weekend spoke to us of wrongdoing and how to treat somebody who is misbehaving. This was an issue at the time when the Gospel of Matthew was written as it is now. There is a fine line between interfering and correcting. There is also an onus on the corrected one to repent. The consequences of not doing so are stressed. If the wicked person does not repent, they will die in their sin.

The warning to harden not your heart is a very serious warning. To harden ones heart means to refuse to repent. The warning has relevance for us all. To a greater or lesser extent all of us are drawn towards the easy way which may not always be the right way. And it can be hard to break free. Every act of unkindness tends to harden a person’s heart. The more a heart hardens the less freedom there is to change. But the opposite is also true. Every good deed tends to soften a persons heart. Every time we do something good, we make it easier to do good again.

From a spiritual point of view, hardness of heart is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. A hard heart is a closed heart so it cannot receive. A hard heart becomes a barren heart. Oscar Wilde gives the following advice – ‘Fear not that your heart might be broken; fear rather that it might

turn into a stone.’ It is to the heart that the call of God comes. To harden ourselves against one another is bad enough but to harden ourselves to God means that even God himself cannot get through to us. God longs for our hearts. He is calling us into communion with himself and with one another. When we heed the voice of God our lives changes. Jesus did not come to condemn us but to save us. In opening our hearts to God we have nothing to fear but the mercy of God.

Graveyard Mass in Inch Graveyard on Sunday 17th September at 10.00am. Weather permitting.

Fr Christy McElwee from the Rosminian Order spoke at some of the Masses in the Parish last weekend about their work in East Africa, providing health care in rural areas, digging water wells for local communities, and providing education for both boys and girls, Christians and Muslims. If you would like to support their work, envelopes are available at the back of the Churches of the Parish. These can be handed in to the collection boxes at the back of the Churches of the Parish and we will forward your donations to the Rosminian Order. Many thanks for your generosity.

You are welcome to join with fellow pilgrims on the Parish Pilgrimage following Cosán na Naomh. The pilgrimage will take place on Saturday Sept 16th and begins at Ventry Beach car park (beside the mobile homes) at 10.30am. We will finish at Kilmalkeader (14km; 5 hrs approx). This walk is on road and tracks but a reasonable level of fitness is required. Please bring suitable clothing, walking gear, snacks/liquids. Please contact the Dingle Parish Office, 066 9151208, by Friday 15th at 12noon if interested. This will help in the organising of the event. Further info on dingleparish.ie.

I hope you get to enjoy the autumn sunshine.

Yours in Christ

Fried Buttermilk Chicken with Red Cabbage and Fennel Coleslaw

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

1 tbsp. of wholegrain mustard

1 lemon zested and juiced

dash of cider vinegar

½ head of red cabbage finely sliced

2 carrots peeled and grated

1 fennel bulb finely sliced

2 sticks of celery finely sliced

Salt and Pepper

Parsley finely chopped

Method

Fried chicken when done well is so tasty. By allowing it to marinate over night in buttermilk will tenderise it slightly and will give it a slightly acidic flavour. What you are hoping to achieve is to have a really juicy chicken with a golden crispy crust. It will be crispier if you use the deep fat fryer but if you do not want to use the fryer you can place them in the oven (180º) for about 25-30 minutes.

The red cabbage coleslaw will give you an alternative to the normal cabbage coleslaw and is perfect as a side dish especially with fried food.

Ingredients

for the chicken

10 chicken thighs or drumsticks

1 litre of buttermilk

2 tsp. paprika

1 tsp. curry powder

sea salt

ground black pepper.

200g flour

oil for frying

for the coleslaw

150g mayonnaise

Add the buttermilk, half of the paprika, half of the curry powder, 2 tablespoons of salt and a pinch of pepper to a bow. Mix this all together. Add the chicken pieces and allow this to marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Heat a fryer to 180ºC

Preheat an oven to 180ºC

Once it is marinated, remove them and place them on a wire rack over a bowl to allow the excess drain off. Meanwhile in another bowl, add the flour the rest of the paprika, rest of the curry powder and a pinch of both salt and pepper. Mix this well and then add the chicken pieces. Coat the chicken well with the flour and the spices and carefully place them in the fryer. Be careful not to overload the fryer. Fry the chicken for about 15 minutes and then remove them from the fryer and place them on a tray and put into the oven for about 10 minutes or until it is cooked.

Drain the chicken and season with salt and pepper. For the coleslaw

Mix the mayonnaise, mustard, lemon zest and juice in a bowl and add a little cider vinegar to taste. Mix in the vegetables and mix well to coat. Season with salt and pepper and parsley.

Serve the chicken with a side of coleslaw.

TIDY TOWNS. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee wish to acknowledge receipt of a Grant of €500 towards their annual insurance premium through the 2022 Community Enhancement Programme from Kerry County Council and The Department of Community and Rural Development.

The most recent report from the Irish Business Against Litter Coastal Survey showed an improving position from previous surveys especially in the Harbour area. However the survey highlights litter in some other areas but their final assessment resulted in a Moderately Littered Report getting closer to our aim of a Clean To European Norms report.

We appeal to all dog owners and also cigarette smokers to please help our efforts by properly disposing of cigarette buts and dog poo. Some of our streets and paths are visibly littered and the situation appears to be steadily disimproving in recent weeks.

TOWN PARK. The entire grass area in the Town Park has been reseeded this week so the Park will not be open to the Public for at least another 4 to 5 weeks. The possibility of an October Bank Holiday Grand Reopen Concert/Activities Weekend is gaining momentum so lets have our readers suggestions and involvement in bringing the Park back to a popular Local Public Multi Use Amenity again.

MEMOIR LAUNCH. Local Open Water, Endurance and Ice Swimmer Nuala Moore's Memoir titled LIMITLESS was launched in the Dingle Scellig Hotel last weekend and is now available in all good book shops. Further information is available at publisher Gill Books website. This book should be an interesting read especially for all who know our popular local athlete.

EVENTS. Approximately 3,000 people between serious runners, joggers and walkers took part in another very successful Dingle Half and Full Marathons on the first Saturday in September this year. The organisers wish to thank the local public for their hugely appreciated welcome for all involved and in particular for their cooperation especially during the road closures in the Corca Dhuibhne Area.

A special mention to all the locals who took part in the events and to Dingle athlete Cathal Sheehy from Ballinvownig who was placed ninth overall in a time of 3hours and 8 minutes following a very high finish also the previous year.

The skies also stayed clear and bright for the two day Annual Dingle Regatta the same weekend. All sixteen races saw great entries, wonderful skillful rowing and very competitive finishes

which were much appreciated by the large numbers of supporters on shore. The interest by the younger members of the Dingle Rowing Club is great to see and augurs well for the future of the sport in the Peninsula. The parents of all the younger members of the club wish through this public media outlet to say a huge THANK YOU to MAUNZA, KAREN and EDDIE for their comittment over many years in building the club and providing such a healthy and natural sporting outlet for boys and girls together.

BUSINESS. The Business Chamber wish to welcome another new business titled NOURISH which is based in An Capall Dubh Courtyard in Green Street. Claire Ahern offers Healthy Treats and Snacks, coffee, teas and her speciality sourdough. All of the produce on offer is mostly organic and she is working her way to be a 100% organic operation.

Plans for the annual Dingle Food Festival at the end of the month are almost complete but volunteers are still required to help make this popular undertaking a memorable occasion for all concerned. Further details to martin@ dinglehub.com.

PEIL. Congratulations to the Dingle Senior Football Team, panel members and management team on a great success in the Senior County Club Final against Kenmare Shamrocks last weekend. The result was in the balance right up to the last kick of the game and the players had to draw on their experience and wonderful natural skills to grind out a deserved victory after many previous disappointments. Onward next weekend to the County Senior Football Championship with Dr Crokes In Tralee and hopefully a good run towards the Dr Moynihan Cup this year.

It’s All In The Mind:Know Thyself

Orla Smyth

The kids are back to school and despite an unexpected week of glorious

an inner value system. We develop a better understanding of how we want to behave, how we learn and grow, how we work and what matters to us : using this knowledge we begin to make choices based on our true motivations, attributes and values which helps us to reach our full potential."

sunshine, we leave the longer, more leisurely summer days behind us. As we move into a different pace of shorter days and warmer clothes, there is a slight shift in the rhythm of our daily lives.

There is a kind of reorganisation, as we adapt and adjust to new demands and commitments. Some of us will slot into more structured routineslunch boxes, homework, early bedtimes while others move onto pastures new: college, new careers, travel plans - the excitement of taking on new challenges, leaving behind all that is familiar. Others still, at a crossroads, uncertain which direction to take. And, more of us feeling stuck, wishing to make changes but unsure how to go about it.

Wherever we’re at, one thing is for sure : we’re going to come up against obstacles, feel frustrated in our endeavours and at times, will question our choices. Life is a journey of choices, some lead us down well worn paths while others take us on unexpected detours. It's a journey of trial and error where every choice we make is simply an opportunity to bring us closer to own sense of purpose, or in other words to get to know ourselves.

In this context, there is no right and wrong; there are no mistakes. There will be set backs - we may be self critical, feel shame and guilt, feel wronged by others, we may resent and blame others, be afraid, lack courage, have regrets - all of this and so much more : ‘The Full Catastrophe’ of a lived life (Zorba the Greek), will lead us to self discovery and growth when we experience it all with awareness. The pain and difficulties we encounter are inevitable.

Recognising that they are integral to our lives allows us to learn from life’s challenges : to gain insight and wisdom, cultivate resilience and compassion. All the unnecessary suffering comes from delusion, ignorance, avoidance, drifting through life with the automatic pilot permanently switched on.

‘Know Thyself ‘, the ancient Greek aphorism sums it up. Aristotle said ‘knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom’. Self knowledge is the essence of who you are as a person, not as a parent, employee, son/ daughter, scholar, politician, writer, friend. It is not how others see you, how you are pigeon-holed by society or even how you wish you were. Who you are is not defined by any role you take on. Your true self is who you are, underneath all the ‘stuff’ and the busy-ness, beyond the noise and chatter- when you are still and quiet there is a glimpse of the true self as it really is. Charles Bukowski asks ‘ Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?’

Self awareness goes deeper than you think and its importance is the most underrated key to having a happier, more fulfilled life.

Knowledge of our own mental state, emotions, moods, fears , core beliefs, desires, intentions, perceptions can be the key to a better understanding and a meaningful life.

Research shows that when we can see ourselves clearly, we are better positioned to be confident and creative. We make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively .We are less impressed by conventional notions of ‘success’ or ‘failure’ We are less likely to identify with views imposed on us and tend to rely more on

"What tools can we use on this journey of self discovery? Being mindful is a very good place to start - simply slowing down and being fully present in this moment- working through the body( the senses) rather than the mind (our thoughts). It is the easiest thing in the world and the hardest thing in the world according to Jon Kabat Zinn. He says 'just live your life as if it really, really, really matters. Practising mindfulness can often require a leap of faith to begin - there is no instant gratification , in fact self discovery can be very challenging when we come up against truths about ourselves that we don’t really like ( and we all do!) and it is entirely experiential , no one can do it for us, we can’t just learn the theory, we have to try it out for ourselves, learn the truth on our own skin. It can be like using a road map: we have to find our own route even when we are not quite sure of the destination: we might take the scenic route or double back, lose our sense of direction, travel the highways and byways - it is a journey of exploration, not Google maps! No two journeys are the same but the signposts that mindfulness offers will always help you find your way. Awareness is the vehicle we use and an attitude of kindness and curiosity is what fuels the engine. We start to let go of certainties because as soon as we think in terms of absolute truths we become closed off to learning, growth and ultimately to self knowledge. Mindfulness is about letting go of what we think we know and cultivating a beginner' s mind in our discovery of the self.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.

The Narcotics Anonymous Message

An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.

Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.

Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Dingle NA meetings are on Tuesdays 7.30pm & Fridays 8.30pm, in the Dingle Presbytery, off Green St, V92 AT18. www.nasouth.ie

Níl Deireadh Ráite

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Dea-thoradh eile, murar bhua é, an cluiche comhscóir le Baile Longfoirt an tseachtain seo caite, gan aon chúl faighte ag ceachtar taobh.

Iomrascáil na gcosantóirí a bhí ann den chuid ba mhó, agus má bhí seansanna ar chúl ann, bhí siad ag an dá thaobh, ach na cúl báirí is na cosantóirí go maith in ann dóibh. Agus an cluiche ag druidim chun deiridh, ba chosúla gur ag an bhfoireann baile ba dhóichí a bheadh an bua, ach nuair a fuair Cian Brosnan aga leis an liathróid a threorú chuig Kennedy Amechi, bhí Amechi as alt na himeartha agus cailleadh an deis san.

Ba thrua gur caitheadh maslaí ciníocha le himreoir nó imreoirí i ndiaidh an chluiche. Fad a bheidh daoine corraithe ag cailliúint smacht ar a mbeola tarlóidh san ó am go céile, ach ní mór cur ina choinne go seasta.

An tseachtain roimhe sin, bhí Fánaithe Bhré ar cuairt i dTrá Lí, agus bhaineadar an cluiche le trí chúl in aghaidh ceann. Chaithfeadh éinne a ghéilleadh go mba iarracht ar leith an chéad chúl, Yousef "Yoyo" Mahdy na gcuairteoirí á chur chun bealaigh gan ach deich soicind ar an gclogcuriarracht nua.

Chothromaigh Seán McGrath an scór laistigh de roinnt nóiméadaí, agus gach seans gur mar chomhscór a chríochnódh sé murab é gur díbríodh Cian Barrett direach roimh leath-ama, ar bhonn chailís arbh é tuairim na coitiantachta, ar an dá thaobh, gur ar éigin a thuill sé cárta in aon chor, gan trácht ar an dara cárta buí.

Fiú agus iad dhá chúl chun deiridh, san fhiche nóiméad deireanach lean an deichniúr Ciarraíoch a bhí fágtha ag iarraidh an bhearna a laghdú. Brosnan ba ghaire a tháinig dó agus fráma an eangaigh buailte aige, ach bhí iarrachtaí fónta freisin ag Leo Gaxha agus Dan Okwute.

Faoi mar a sheasann cúrsaí anois, níl aon seans ag na Ciarraígh éalú ó bhun an tábla an séasúr seo. Ach ní náire ar bith san.

Tá cluiche amháin bainte acu, duais na mbobarún a cheapfá. Ach theip ar na Bóihéimigh cháiliúla cluiche ar bith a bhuachaint bliain amháin (1959/60). Nil aon chluiche buaite acu i gCnocán an Iolair go fóill – mar a tharla maidir le cluichí baile do Chathair Chorcaí agus Gaillimh Aontaithe, Baile Longfoirt agus Luimneach i mblianta éagsúla. Tá níos mó torthaí comhscóir faighte acu ná fuair Port Lairge, St Patricks Athletic, Cláirsigh na Finne nó Droichead Átha Aontaithe i mblianta eile.

Agus más ag caint ar stair atáimid, ní ar an seanstair ar fad é: cuid de na fíoraicí samplacha san, tharla siad sna 1970daí, na 1990daí, agus chomh déanach le 2011.

Is féidir le foireann na Ríochta cur lena ngabháil pointí go fóill, agus is fiú leanúint leis an iarracht. Níl an rás ar fad rite go fóill, agus ní ghéilleann fear an mhisnigh go séidtear an fhead deireanach.

CAMP FAIR

All roads lead to Camp Fair next Monday 18th September. Camp Fair is a sheep fair that has survived down through the ages, a tradition of selling, buying sheep and making bargains at Camp Cross that has continued to the present day. The hardy scotch sheep brought in from Scotland by Lord Ventry a few centuries ago is still thriving on our hills and mountains around here. Alongside them we have the lowland breeds, the cheviots and cross breeds now, fetching a better price than our noble scotch, since they are bigger and have more meat on them.

On Camp Fair day there will be prizes for quality sheep, chosen on the day. Prizegiving will take place at Daly's yard at 1 o'clock.

Special Class for U/15’s confined to Camp. Pen of Sheep - best overallsponsored by Jimmy O Dwyer.

Pet Show at 3.30 p.m. in O'Dwyers forecourt. All pets great and small are welcome.

The traditional mutton pie is still a staple on Camp Fair Day and Mary's Pies at The Junction Bar are still simply the best. Camp Fair Day wouldn't be the same without sampling Mary's pies.

O'Dwyer's Mace provides meals and food from the delicatessen all day long. Annes Cafe, Ashe's pub provide coffee, lovely sweet treats and more. Wonderful choices of good food all day long at Camp Fair. Gerard Mulligan is our music man, entertaining us all day. Outside O'Dwyer's Mace in the morning and Ashes yard where the cream of our local musicians will join in. Night Life are at The Junction bar. Come early, come late, join in the fun Camp Fair Day, not to be missed!

AUGHACASLA SCHOOL PARENTS

In bygone days the children of Camp got a day off from school on Camp Fair Day. In 1970 Camp School closed and since then times have changed. Camp children attending Aughacasla School are now arriving back home off the bus after school and are always very excited to join in the fun. This year the school parents have put together a fun filled programme of field activities for all the children to enjoy. There will be a Bouncy Castle, Pony Rides, Music, a raffle and much more. There will be refreshments and a bake sale between 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. in the Old School

AUCTION - A Sheep Auction will be held at 4.00. Donations for bake sale and sheep for auction greatly appreciated. Contact 085 877 6261.

Proceeds to Aughacasla School. Aughacasla National School is contributing greatly to our communities, in the social and academic education of our children over many years. This is a way to say thank you, please support.

CAMP VINTAGE

A Tractor Run will be held on Saturday, 16th September at The Junction Bar, Lower Camp.

And on Sunday 17th. September, we are reviving Camp Vintage at The Junction Bar. Always a great day out for all the family.

Cars, tractors, vintage engines and motorcycles Including the oldest known registered motorbike in Kerry (a 1903 quadrant), on show on the day. We will have steam threshing, ploughing with horses and a Blacksmith at work and more! The children will love it too.

Proceeds in aid of Cystic Fibrosis (Kerry) and Irish Motor Neurone Disease (Kerry) and local Club.Gates open at 12 noon.

CAMP CPR & DEFIBRILLATOR

Camp CPR and Defibrillator Community are holding a competition to name their two new training manikins which will be on display in the village on Camp Fair Day. This is an opportunity for you to see how to operate this equipment which could save a life. The two lucky winners

of the competition will each receive 5 family passes for the wonderful Sandy Feet Farm. We kindly thank Sandy Feet for their generous donation.

BON SECOURS

On Tuesday Last Fr. Tadhg Fitzgerald officiated at a concelebrated Mass in St. Johns Church to say farewell to Sr. Aidan O'Brien and Sr. Teresita Hoare, the last of the nuns to leave the Bon Secours Hospital after 144 years of service given by the Sisters to the community of Tralee and Kerry. Over many years, Camp has had a special bond with the Bon Secours hospital in Tralee.

Sr. Pius Dunne, Knockglossmore was a former Mother Superior. Sr. Evangelist Moore, Camp Cross, a nursing sister and Sr. Michael Gerard O Shea Upper Camp Managed the hospital Catering Section in the hospital. Sr. Pius and Sr. Evangelists have both passed on now to their eternal reward, RIP.

Sr. Michael Gerard is enjoying retirement in Cork. Wishing her well and Sr. Aidan and Teresita, may you too enjoy your retirement. It is the end of an era for Tralee and Kerry and a time to look back and acknowledge the wonderful work of the sister of the Bon Secours in Kerry.

CHRIS O'DRISCOLL FUNDRAISER

On Saturday night the communities of West Kerry came out in strength in support of the Chris O'Driscoll Fundraising Night at the Dogs in The Kingdom Stadium in Tralee.

It was a wonderful evening and success and there was a real sense of hope amongst all of us, whose ardent wish is for a speedy recovery for Chris. Congratulations and well done to the organising committee of this event, well done!

Many thanks to all of our Coiste na nÓg crew who organised the parish league and to all of our coaches and parents for making it a great event once again.

MINORS: County Minor Club Football Championship B quarter-final: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 4-8, Ballymac 3-12

The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors began their County Minor Football Championship campaign last Friday away to Ballymac in the B grade quarter-final. They lost out by just one point in an exciting encounter that really came alive in a second half that featured seven goals.

Ballymac led by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break and managed to add 3-5 after the break. The GGC lads were goal-hungry adding four three pointers but didn’t keep the points ticking over and lost out by one. Ballymac won the game with a free in injury time, in a game where we just didn’t have the luck. This was

exemplified when Jamie Casey saved a penalty pushing it onto the post only for the ball to rebound to a Ballymac to goal.

It was one of those games though where it was a shame that there had to be a loser.

Meanwhile, the Mid Kerry Minor Championship will be played on Saturday afternoons as soon as clubs exit the county minor club championship. Laune Rangers will be seeded to the semifinals while Keel/Listry, Milltown/Castlemaine, Beaufort, and GGC will playoff in a league format.

The top team in the league format will be seeded opposite Laune Rangers in the semi-final. The second and third-place teams will be drawn against either Laune Rangers or the top team in the semi-finals. The fourth-placed team in the league will exit the competition at this stage.

SENIORS: Cromane will compete in Group A of the 2023 Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup competition alongside Milltown-Castlemaine and Laune Rangers. Players on the Mid Kerry senior county championship panel are excluded from playing in the O’Sullivan Cup. This competition will begin when the involvement of Mid Kerry clubs in the county junior cups ends.

UNDER-13s: The GGC under-13s will have two teams in this year’s Mid Kerry Championship. The GGC A team are in Group 1 with games to come against Milltown-Castlemaine, Laune Rangers, Keel-Listry, and Beaufort. GGC A have a bye in round 1. The GGC B team is in Group 2 with games to come against Milltown-Castlemaine B, Laune Rangers B, and Keel-Listry B. GGC B got their campaign underway last Tuesday (September 12) with an away game against Keel-Listry B.

All other games for these competitions were due to start last Sunday (September 10) and will continue until the finals, provisionally fixed for Sunday, October 15.

UNDER-9s: It was a fabulous evening for our last under-9s match against Glenbeigh-Glencar last Tuesday evening. Well done to all the players who have kept practising their skills and going

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

Seisiúin Cainte:

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Áisitheoirí á lorg ag Dúchas an Daingin le seisiúin cainte a stiúradh. Seisiúin dírithe ar an dteanga labhartha a bheadh in úsáid i ngnóanna chomh maith le ciorcal comhrá. D'fhéadfadh go mbeadh suas le 4 uair a' chloig oibre sa tseachtain i gceist le huaireanta solúbtha. Is féidir teagmháil a dhéanamh le Cristín ar 087 7004 884 nó optduchasandaingin@gmail.com.

Aistritheoirí á lorg:

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Cuireann Dúchas an Daingin seirbhís aistriúcháin ar fáil do ghnóanna, coistí agus féilte i nDaingean Uí Chúis. Cuirtear an seirbhís seo ar fáil d'aon ní a chuireann le feiceálacht na teangan. Tá painéal á chur le chéile againn d'aistritheoirí a bheadh ar fáil le píosaí a aistriú

Selected Stories

le Éilís Ní Dhuibhne

foilsithe ag Colourpoint

‘For almost forty years, Éilís Ní Dhuibhne has captivated readers and critics alike with the dazzle and daring of her stories. Hailed as an original voice from her first collection, she has gone on to create a body of work that has established her as one of Ireland’s finest and most compelling storytellers.

The fourteen stories gathered here demonstrate the breadth of Ní Dhuibhne’s achievement across her long writing career, particularly in terms of her depiction of the richly complex territory of women’s lives. They are testament to her great and enduring talent for weaving stories that draw us in and stay with us in the silence, long after the story has ended.’ - Colourpoint

Ó Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Caid

Bhí ócáidí agus iontais gan sárú againn an deire seachtaine seo caite. Is dócha an ceann is mó a chuaidh i gcion ar mhuintir an Daingin ár gcomharsain ná gur bhuaidh foireann sinsir caide an Daingin craobh sinsir an chontae. 1-9 v 0-11 ar an Neidín. Mo léir cad é comóradh moladh agus sólas i mbaile an Daingin. Comhgháirdeas leo. Bhuadar le pointe ach ba mhar a chéile é sin agus aon phointe déag. Chuaidh Seán ó Sé an-ghairid báide a aimsiú ag tarrac ar dheire an chluiche, ach ní fuair. As an 1 -9 (scór an Daingin) fuair an triúr Géibheanach an scór ar fad, Dylan 1-3, Pól agus Conor 0-3 an duine. Is maith iad.

Fuair Sean Ó Sé 0-9 do 0-11, an Neidín.

Ceiliúradh

Ansan bhí Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid ann le linn an deire seachtaine, mar a raibh an Taoiseach i láthair agus a labhair go dearfa fé thochaí an Bhlascaoid i nGaolainn mhaith. Ar a shála bhí an tAire Sóisireach atá freagarach as imeachtaí Oifig na n-Oibreacha Poiblí agus labhair go dearfa fé bheartais eile atá ar na bioráin don mBlascaod Mór.

Ar na cainteoirí eile a bhí ar a dtriail bhí Pádraig Ó hÉalaí go raibh a mháthair, údar, ag múineadh i scoil an Bhlascaoid. An-chainteoir eolach ‘sea Pádraig . Is dócha gur beag duine go bhfuil oiread cur amach ar an mBlascaod agus muintir an Óileáin ná Breandán Feiritéar agus léirigh sé é sin ina chaint.

Seoladh leabhar Ceiliúradh 25 bliain, Ionad an Bhlascaoid agus i gCorca Dhuibhne in eagar ag Tomás L Ó Murchú., [ Coiscéim 2023].

B’é Gearóid Cheaist Ó Catháin a oscail an ceiliúradh agus b’é Mícheál de Mórdha, Fear an Tí.’

Labhair Jerry Hayes fé Chlann Chriomthain, Chatháin agus Cheárna an Bhlascaoid, agus rinne Cole Moreton cur i lathair ‘Always Hungry for Home, Blasket Exiles and the Land of Youth.

B’í Máirín Uí Shé an Cathaoirleach ar Neart agus Brí na hÓige ó Scoileana mar Scoil Dhún Chaoin, Coláiste Ídé, Coláiste Naomh Eóin, Inis Méain agus Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, a bhí an- spreagúil.

Ar an nDomhnach bhí Dáíthí de Mórdha ag tagairt do Charraigreacha Cainte, Cailleacha an Dúna, Comharthaí Aimsire. Bailiúchán na Scol sa Bhlascaod Mór. Fág fé é.

Bronnadh sparántacht An Bhlascaoid ar Antoine ó Sé ó Árd na Caithne agus Sibéal ní Ógáin ó Dhún Chaoin. Padraig Firtéar a dhein an gnó thar ceann na Fundúireachta. Guímid gach rath ar Shibéal agus í ag tabhairt féna cúrsa Innealltóireachta agus ar Antoine ina chúrsaí Gaoluinn agus Dlí.

Labhair Mícheál Ó Cinnéide fé shliocht an Óileáin i gCongar agus i gCéin. Bhí fios a chúraim ag Mícheál.

Chuir Tommí ó Conchuir Ceol binn ar fáil agus chualathas amhráin ón árd amhránaí, Sháine Ní Cathallaín.

Ghaibh Bainisteóir Ionad an Bhlascaoid Lorcán Ó Cinnéide buíochas le gach éinne a bhí bainteach leis an gCeiliúradh. Tá bliain rathúíl curtha dhóibh ag Fundúireacht an Bhlascaoid.

Seoladh leabhar le Nuala Moore ar an nDomhnach ag leiriú eachtraí ná féadfá a chreidiúint ach gur chuir Nuala gach éachtra i gcrích. "Limitless" ainm an leabhair a thugann grinn eolas dúinn mar a threasnaigh Caolas Bering ón Rúis dtí Alaska i bhfarraigí a bhí suas le 4 mhéadar ar aoirde. Thug sí Tiera Del Fuego uirthi féin an láthair is baolai farraige sa domhan i bhfíor dheisceart Mhericá Theas- mar bharr ar sin ghaibh sí thar Cape Horn. Dhein sí gaiscaí in uiscí leac oighre agus shnáigh treasna Loch Zurich na hÉilbhéise, agus timpeall na hÉireann. Tá an leabhar scríte go cumasach slachthar soiléir aici.

Chuig Ellen Cranitch agallamh ar Nuala ag an seoladh agus thug sí freagraí

eolacha fíor-spéisiúla. Molaim do aon duine go bhfuil suim i leabhra maithe aige/aici é a cheannach.Thosnaíos á leamh oíche Dé Domhnaigh agus bhaineas an- shásamh as.
