One for the Boys for Movember Irene Flannery
Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the red pigment of tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is a crucial ingredient to reduce prostate cancer risk. It is thought that lycopene targets specific free radicals associated with DNA damage to prostate cells which can instigate the onset of prostate cancer. Tomato products such as passata and bottled tomato juice are also a rich source of lycopene, offering us year-round protection when fresh produce is out of season. Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and selenium mentioned in the CUP report, work in a similar way and are very specific to prostate cells. Pomegranate seeds also provide important antioxidants such as polyphenols, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Like lycopene, these antioxidants protect the prostate cells from free radical damage caused by metabolic activity and environmental toxins. Anthocyanins may also reduce the risk of urinary and bladder infections associated with enlarged prostate. Pomegranate seeds have the added benefit of inhibiting oestrogen production, which is a possible cause of BPH in older men.
Welcome to Movember – the one month in the year which has been set aside to shine a light on health issues affecting Men including Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. With a lively awareness campaign in full flight across all media sources, let’s go with the momentum and check out the kitchen to see what food can do for the men in our lives, and in particular, how nutrition plays a vital role in protecting the prostate from cancer and ageing. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men, after lung cancer. One in eight men in Ireland will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system producing a fluid component of semen that nourishes sperm. As men age, the prostate may become enlarged in a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous condition. Prostate cancer also causes enlargement of the prostate. Both conditions share similar symptoms of frequent urge to urinate, difficulty when urinating and/or incomplete emptying of the bladder. While these conditions are quite rare in men under forty, they are increasing in those over 60 years. As with many cancers, the risk of incidence increases with age because we are exposed to cancer-causing factors over a longer period of time and our ability to naturally fend off risks may diminish with age through loss of vitality and health, poorer nutrition and less active lifestyles. Many cancers, including prostate may take years to manifest which is also reflected in the statistics relating to cancer risk and ageing. While the statistics are alarming laid out in black and white, a colourful diet is a sure way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer and improve the outcomes and survival rates for those already diagnosed. The World Cancer Research Fund Continuous Update Project (CUP) has revised 2018 findings on diet, nutrition, physical activity and Prostate Cancer. The CUP reported that there is now strong evidence that obesity and height (being tall) are significant factors associated with risk of advanced Prostate cancer. They also reported evidence that higher consumption of dairy products, diets high in calcium, low plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration (vitamin E) and low plasma selenium concentration may increase prostate cancer risk. Unless you were stretched on a rack as a kid, being tall is mainly down to genetics – however, all the other significant factors mentioned in the report are directly associated with the diet and lifestyle choices you make every day.
Cruciferous vegetables are top defenders when it comes to prostate cancer. Sulfuronane in these vegetables acts as a potent anticancer agent and is particularly beneficial in hormone sensitive prostate cancer. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale can be easily incorporated into the diet – just don’t boil them to a mush! Steaming or simmering in a little water will help to ensure your prostate gets the best from these veggies. Soybeans, although controversial, are worth a mention. Populations with higher than average intakes of soybeans tend to have lower incidence of both prostate and oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. This is attributed to phytoestrogens which offer protection from the harmful, growth promoting effects of oestrogen on these cancer cells. Other legumes and lentils also provide this kind of protection and fibre, which helps eliminate excess oestrogen from the body. These populations also enjoy a diet rich in fresh vegetables, eat very little meat and no dairy – all of which are relevant to both breast and prostate cancer. It is unclear if the protective nature of these diets is solely due to soybean intake but more likely due to the combination of both the bean and a lifelong commitment to eating more plant-based foods. A moderate intake of protein from oily fish, nuts and seeds will provide healthy fats which reduce risk of prostate cancer. Monounsaturated oils from olives, pumpkin seeds and avocado (rich in vitamin E) are protective, while the heated, treated oils such as corn, rapeseed and vegetable oils increase risk. Fried foods, trans fats, red meat, sugar, dairy and high calcium intakes are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer which may explain the rising rates among the Irish men! Extracts from Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin seed, available as supplements may be included in a prostate-friendly diet but do seek good advice on these supplements. Nutrients such as Selenium, Zinc, B vitamins and folate can be added to the manly list and are readily available in foods such as brazil nuts, wholegrains, fish and pumpkin seeds and topped up if needed in supplement form. So, there ye have it! Men of West and Mid Kerry, I hope the month of Movember is the impetus to explore your health and find out more about minding yourselves - the kitchen is officially all yours! West Kerry Live 9
Farming News Louis Murchan DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TRADE MISSION TO SOUTH KOREA. Last Sunday on “Lunchtime News with Colm O’Mongain”, Minister McConologue was interviewed by the host, about his trip and findings following a prolonged visit to South Korea. The country is a country not much bigger than Ireland, but with a population over 10 times the size of ours. Moreover, they have a big appetite for beef as well as also pork and lamb. Much of this is sourced from the USA, Australia and South America. However, these markets are becoming more difficult to source meat products from, as other closed markets develop and the indigenous populations of these countries increase. This is our queue to enter the market, perhaps. Or maybe not! South Korea occupies the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula, which extends some 680 miles from the Continental and East Asian mainland. This mountainous peninsula is flanked by the Yellow Sea to the west and the Sea of Japan to the east. It is divided into four general regions: an eastern region of high mountain ranges and narrow coastal plains; a western region of broad coastal plains, river basins, and rolling hills; a southwestern region of mountains and valleys; and a southeastern region dominated by the broad basin of the Nakdong River. South Korea's terrain is mostly mountainous, most of which is not arable. Lowlands, located primarily in the west and southeast, make up only 30% of the total land area. Therefore, its large population is highly reliant on foreign food imports. Agriculture is the basic industry of the Korean economy, consisting of farming, animal husbandry, forestry and fishing. Following its liberation after WWII, Korea was a typical agricultural country, with more than 80% of the population engaged in agricultural production. After land reform, economic revitalization and the wave of world trade liberalization that began in the 1980s, Korean agriculture has undergone dramatic changes. However, it is not able to meet is population explosion. This is therefore a great opportunity for Irish Agriculture to make a difference, and to allow farm production to expand. There is no reason why it should not be allowed do so, as there are no such restrictions on any other industrial/ production sectors. However, on his return, our Minister for Agriculture came on national radio, to promote the achievements of his trip and findings, but he had little to say. He could not comment on the level of agriculture production in the country he just visited. He could not give any figures of the amount of food produced in the country, not the shortfall that needed to be met by imports. He therefore had no answer when asked what level of exports we could hope to achieve by opening a market to South Korea. ACRES COURSES As all of you will be aware, there is much activity in relation to these courses, as they are being held in every corner of the county and country. Rumour had it that if these courses are not completed, farmers will not be paid their due ACRES payment, and will possibly be kicked out of the scheme. This is not true. At a Department of Agriculture meeting last June, Ms Josephine Brennan stated (when asked repeatedly, it must be pointed out) that farmers who have not completed the ACRES Training Course, will not receive their second payment which is 15% of the total annual payment. She also stated that these courses can take place in late winter and early spring of 2024, but stressed that that last 15% will be withheld, until course completion. This is a far cry from being rejected from the scheme. However, most advisors are endeavouring to have all (or most) of these completed by early December, to keep DAFM happy. Farmers need to ensure that they get a course, and if there is an opportunity to do one near you, you should take it. It does not have to be your own advisor, it can be any advisor, but best go to your own, if possible. Otherwise, it becomes a jungle, out there. It is difficult to get dates for Saturdays, as DAFM staff do not like working 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
Saturdays, and they need to inspect them, caretakers may not be available to all access the centres/venues. And anyway, seriously the week is long enough, and there are enough other days in the week. Completion of these courses will earn you €156 not a lot, but is works out at a rate of €26 per hour. Not bad! Failure to complete the course will cost you this payment. It will also most likely get you kicked you of the scheme, and if you are in receipt of the top level, of €7,300 per year, this could be a costly refusal. So please, make the time, make the booking and get the course complete. EQUINE TECHNICAL SUPPORT & BREEDING SCHEMES OPENS The Equine Technical & Breeding Scheme recently opened. The aim of the scheme is to facilitate and support the Irish equine sector to operate and develop at the highest international standards of breeding, training and research. The scheme is comprised of three programme headings: •
General Programme;
•
Training/Education Programme; and
•
Research into Equine Diseases Programmes.
Applicants must comply with the specific terms and conditions of each programme and projects must be completed and reported on in late 2024. The closing date for submission for applications is 5pm on Friday 22nd December 2023. For further details on the scheme, including a copy of the terms and conditions of each programme are available on the Department’s website at https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/412da-animal-breeding For any further information on the scheme, contact the Livestock Breeding, Production and Trade Division, Cavan (049 436 8242 or ets@agriculture. gov.ie ). ACRES TRANCHE II OPEN Despite the claim that this scheme would open on 15th October, ACRES II was only opened last week according to a Government Press release issued on 6th November. Anyone interested in joining should immediately contact their advisor, as places are seemingly limited with only 4,000 applicants to be accepted, according to our Minister of Agriculture’s budget contribution. All farms to be entered will need to be inspected and (agrisnap) photo -imagery will be required for all Low input Grassland, low Input Peat Grassland, Extensive Grazing and Wild Bird Food (Cover) plots. Now is the time to decide if you want to join the scheme, as many advisors got burned last time out by DAFM mis-information and BS. In their wisdom, DAFM never stated when the closing date is, so were driving blind here. The advice is to make the call this week. GROWING LAWN GRASS OVER WINTER Having a great lawn takes more than great grass seed. Sometimes, it takes a bit of effort. One of the tasks that people always seem to focus on is seeding and reseeding their lawns. One way to cut down on the time and energy it takes to do this chore is to seed over the winter in a process known as dormant seeding. Seeding grass in the winter can be done and is known as dormant seeding. It is best done in places with a good amount of snow and consistently cold temperatures that freeze the ground until spring. As long as you use a species of grass that can hold up to cooler temperatures, like some Kentucky bluegrasses, some varieties of ryegrass, and some tall fescues, you should have no issue sowing seed during the winter months. The grass seed will lay dormant through the winter months until it thaws and sprouts as the temperature rises. Seeding your grass in the winter is easy to do. Preparing your lawn and soil for the seed you want to sow will just take some preparation work. •
Mow your lawn to be as short as possible. Lower your lawn mower to its lowest setting and mow it two to three times. Normally, this would not be healthy for your lawn, but doing this is called scalping your lawn.
•
Go over the area you plan to seed with a wire rake, scratching the soil's surface as much as possible. Your lawn is prepared to start sowing. The best way to sow your grass is to use a broadcaster.
•
A handheld broadcaster or a wheeled seeder will work. If you can time doing this before a forecasted rain; that is even better. Now, it is just a matter of letting winter's natural cooling and warming process do its job.
As the ground shifts, the grass seed will maintain ground contact, absorb water, and begin to germinate as the temperature rises. Dormant seeding does not work everywhere and may require extra care in areas not ideal for this seeding method. The most important thing for dormant seeding to work is moisture. The best conditions for the dormant seeding to work are snow-covered ground from winter that won't melt until spring or consistently cold temperatures with high precipitation rates. If you live in a location that does not receive either, you may need to spritz the area that's been seeded occasionally. Another concern may be protecting the seeded area if it is not covered by snow. Snow coverage protects the seed from being eaten by wildlife and blown away by the wind. Covering your newly seeded area with a thin layer of straw can help protect your lawn until it is ready to germinate in the spring. Either way, dormant seeding is a great way to save you time, effort, and sometimes money sowing a lawn and replacing sod. Even having to do a few extra steps to protect a seed sown during the winter is nothing compared to having to reseed a lawn in the hot summer months or calling a lawn company to do it for you.

Faction deaths in Clare
Ted Creedon -Kerry Reporter, 30 July 1898
Two murders have been committed in this county during the past week. The first was at the fair of Ballynacally upon a man named Ronan. He received the blow of a stone on his head which caused his death on Saturday. This man was a member of these numerous factions by which the people of Clare are divided.
It does not appear to be generally known that under the Treasury Act of 1896 the sum of £30,000 was set aside to extend the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway service to Ventry. It was also proposed to construct a pier there.
The other murder was perpetrated at Ennistimon upon an inoffensive man named Patrick Costello. He walked out of his house after dinner and was followed by a man who, without provocation, struck Costello with a stone on the back of his head which shortly after caused his death.`
However, it seems curious that on the objections of a few local people the expenditure of such a large amount of money, in a relatively poor district, was not welcomed and the project never became a reality.
Narrow escape from Death
The extension would have provided employment for local people along the route. It would have provided public transport for the population in that district, increased tourism to the area and benefitted the sellers of fish and other goods sent to markets.
Yesterday, Denis Murphy, one of the employees at the Milltown Creamery, had a very narrow escape from being killed. One of the pulley belts got disarranged and he climbed up to put it right again. Unfortunately he fell, was caught in the machinery and was whirled around with great velocity.
Postman Drowned
All his clothes, except his boots, were ripped from his body and he received very considerable injuries. Business at the creamery was suspended for a period until Murphy and the onlookers had recovered from the shock.
Extension of train service to Ventry
- Kerry News, 26 July 1916 A sad bathing fatality occurred on Sunday afternoon on the River Flesk near Scartaglin. A postman named Moriarty and some others were bathing in the river. Moriarty, who had not been long in the river suddenly collapsed.

Protecting the eggs of Wild Birds in Kerry - Kerry Reporter, 03 April 1909
The Irish Wolfhound
Tonight’s Dublin Gazette contains an order from the Lord Lieutenant under the Wild Birds Protection Act, 1894, prohibiting the taking or destroying of the eggs of the following species of wild birds throughout County Kerry between the 1st May and the 1st August in the present year ; - Golden eagle, sea eagle, peregrine falcon, merlin, kestrel, harriers, raven, kingfisher. owls, siskin, goldfinch, terns, petrel, woodcock, swift, hoopoe and phalaropes.
- Derby Daily Telegraph, 15 February 1929
American President in Killarney
In 1562 Queen Elizabeth was presented with two wolfhounds by the Irish Chieftain Shane O’Neill and shortly after that Sir Charles Walsingham (sic) took up the breed. In the 17th century large numbers of these dogs were being exported to meet demand on the European mainland. Also, many Irishmen left the country to escape their English rulers and they also took their hounds with them. The wolfhound population in both Ireland and England was dwindling and became a matter of concern to Oliver Cromwell.
- Kerry Evening Post, 01 August 1855
One of his companions dived under the water but could not find him. The incident was immediately reported to the police and after some time the body of the unfortunate man was recovered. The deceased was about 27 years of age and leaves a wife and a young family. He was very popular with the young men of the district.
He declared it illegal to export “the wolf dogges” because of the growing population of wolves in Britain and Ireland in that mid-century period. Cromwell’s ruling succeeded in both countries and, according to folk history, the last wolf in Ireland was killed in County Kerry in the year 1710.
The former President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, has been enjoying his stay, for the past few days, at the Lake Hotel in Killarney. As he was leaving this morning the buglers connected with the hotel, who were secreted in different parts of the grounds, began playing “Yankee Doodle”. Also, the local boatmen gave him three hearty cheers as he passed. (Fillmore was President from 1850 to 1853. Believe it or not - he was a member of the Know Nothing Party.)
(Probably one of numerous places in Ireland where the last wolf met his/her fate. Shane O’Neill went to London to see Elizabeth in January 1562. Sir Charles Walsingham should be Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth’s private secretary, often referred to as her spymaster.)
Duel at Ballybeggan - Morning Chronicle, 13 November 1824 This most unpleasant event resulted from James Crosbie, of Ballyheigue Castle and a Member for Kerry, and Peter Bodkin Hussey, a retired member of the Bar who had made, it was alleged, some disrespectful and injurious comments about Crosbie. When this was relayed to Crosbie he challenged Hussey to a duel. The parties met at a place called Ballybeggin (sic), near Tralee. Mr. Crosbie’s second was Colonel Staughton and a Mr. Church attended Mr. Hussey. The necessary formalities were being arranged for the contest when the police arrived and obliged the parties to leave the grounds. Subsequently, Crosbie sent word to Hussey that he would meet him in Limerick but the invitation was declined.

Kerry County Championship Team Of The 21st Century Revealed Garvey’s Supervalu in association with Kerry GAA, revealed the senior football county championship team of the 21st Century ahead of the County final between East Kerry and Mid Kerry last Sunday. 45 players were shortlisted but, as expected, the final fifteen was dominated by Dr Crokes and South Kerry as both teams won a combined 12 county championships over the 22 years. The sole representative outside of those two teams was Dara Ó Cinnéide of An Ghaeltacht who took the full forward spot, having helped his club to winning two county finals in 2001 and 2003. Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper edged out current Kerry star and nominee David Clifford to secure the number 13 position, having won eight county finals over an 18 year period, a record only matched by fellow Dr Crokes man Eoin Brosnan who secured the centre back position.

What social welfare payments are available to the bereaved?
Benefits and Entitlements Following a Death After a bereavement you may need financial support. The Department of Social Protection (DSP) provides certain once-off payments to help out families during this difficult time. Your local Community Welfare Officer deals with some of these payments. You must have made a certain number of PRSI contributions to be eligible for some social welfare payments. You may be eligible for other payments, if you pass a means test or if you are in urgent need. Time limits apply for many payments, so apply as early as is possible. You cannot be expected to do everything right away, but if the deceased was getting a social welfare payment or you were claiming for them as a dependant or you were getting a Carer's Allowance to look after them, it's important that you notify the Department within the first few days of the death.
We are here to support you in Kerry
Notifying the Department does not mean the payment will be taken back immediately. many cases, the spouse, partner, parent or Phone usInMonday - Friday, 10amcivil - 4pm on cohabitant, 0818 07 7860 carer may continue to receive a payment for 6 weeks following the death. If you are getting Carer’s Allowance (full or half-rate) on behalf of a spouse, civil partner or cohabitant and that person dies, you can continue to get Carer's Allowance for 12 weeks plus the State Pension/Invalidity Pension/ Disability Allowance etc (if in payment to that person) for 6 weeks after the date of death. If you were getting Carer’s Benefit, you continue to get it for 6 weeks and any payments your spouse or partner was getting. Domiciliary Care Allowance continues to be paid for 3 months in cases where the child being cared for has died. Is there any help available with funeral costs? You can get help with the cost of the funeral in certain circumstances. The Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant is a once-off payment to widows/widowers/surviving civil partners with dependent children. This grant is a once-off payment of €8,000.
If you were living with or dependent on the deceased, any current benefits or payments you are getting may change, or you may be able to claim additional benefits. Depending on your income and circumstances you may be entitled to a social welfare payment in your own right. A Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner's Contributory Pension and related social welfare benefits may be payable if either you or your deceased spouse or civil partner has enough PRSI contributions. A Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner's (Non-Contributory) Pension is paid to widowed people or surviving civil partners without dependent children, who do not qualify for a contributory pension and who pass a means test. A Guardian's payment is paid to the child's guardian up to the child's 18th birthday or 22nd birthday if he or she is in full-time education. A One-Parent Family Payment can be paid to you if you are parenting alone as a result of the death of your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant. If you also qualify for a Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner's Contributory Pension you will have to choose which payment is of most benefit to you because you cannot get both. If a person dies because of an accident at work or occupational disease, Death Benefit under the Occupational Injuries Scheme may be paid to their surviving spouse or civil partner. Are there any other additional payments? Bereavement can cause financial difficulties. The Supplementary Welfare Allowance Scheme provides financial support to people with low incomes. You may qualify for a weekly supplement payment under the scheme to meet certain special needs, for example, help with rent and fuel costs. In addition, payments can also be made for urgent or exceptional needs. There are specific rules about taxation in the year of a person's death, for example, a tax refund may be due. There are also extra credits for parents in the years following the death of a spouse or civil partner. If you are a widowed person or a surviving civil partner, you can claim an increased personal tax credit. The amount of the tax credit depends on whether or not you have dependent children and when your spouse or civil partner died. For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.
If someone dies from an accident at work, a Funeral Grant is available. To be eligible for this grant, the death must have resulted from an accident at work, an accident while travelling directly to or from work or an occupational disease. It amounts to €850. Whether you qualify or not for one of the above grants you may be eligible for an Additional Needs Payment to help with funeral costs if you are on a low income. Each case is decided on its merits. The Community Welfare Service prefers if you apply before the funeral takes place, but in practice, most people apply afterwards. In many cases a payment or a grant cannot be paid until all the necessary documentation is received. If you are claiming the grant, you are responsible for the production of certificates, documents and any information required, for example:

New Memoir of Timothy ‘Chub’ O’Connor to be published this month Story of well-known Killorglin TD was written by his late son, Patrick The first ever account of the life and times of the former Fianna Fáil TD, county councillor, greyhound owner and successful businessman, Timothy ‘Chub’ O’Connor will be published in his native Killorglin later this month. The book, titled ‘Chub: The Life and Times of a Remarkable Kerryman’ was written by his son, Patrick ‘Chub’ O’Connor, who passed away in May 2022, and is being published posthumously by his family. The book, which documents the many aspects of the life of one of Killorglin's most famous sons, will be launched by the former minister, Gerry Collins at a special gathering in Killorglin on Friday, 24th November. ‘Chub’ – as he was always known – was born in London in 1906. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grandfather at his home at Meanus near Killorglin. He fought against the Black and Tans during the War of Independence as a member of Fianna Éireann and the IRA before studying at the London School of Economics. Returning to his native Killorglin, he established several successful businesses including the importation of coal at Ballykissane Pier as well as a busy quarry, timber mill and hardware store. His many businesses created significant employment in mid-Kerry in difficult economic times during and after World War II. Timothy ‘Chub’ O’Connor was a long-serving county councillor and was a Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry South from 1961 to 1981, serving under Taoisigh including Seán Lemass, Jack Lynch, and Charles Haughey. He was also a member of the Council of Europe and was instrumental in attracting investment, industry and employment
'Chub' with supporters during 1977 general election to Killorglin and Kerry. ‘Chub’ owned some of the most successful greyhounds in Irish history including Spanish Lad and the record-breaking, three-time Irish Greyhound Derby winner, Spanish Battleship. This new memoir of his father was substantially written by his son, Patrick, before he passed away last year and the book has been supplemented by additional research and edited by historian and author, Owen O’Shea.
large selection of images, ‘Chub’ is an important family, social and political history which offers fascinating insights into the life and times of a remarkable Kerryman. ‘Chub’ will be launched by Gerry Collins at ‘10 Bridge Street’ in Killorglin on Friday, 24 November at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to join the O’Connor family on the night for this very special occasion. ‘Chub’, published by Laune Press, is priced €14.99 and will be available at the launch and in local bookshops later this month.

Sun Glare - A Threat to Life Ted Creedon
the sun is low in the sky in the morning while motorists are driving in an easterly direction and low again in the late afternoon while driving in a westerly direction. Warnings about sun glare during the winter months, are almost non-existent apart from those on the RSA website or, occasionally, in a newspaper. On the other hand, the public are hourly warned about weather conditions such as rain, fog, floods, ice, snow, gales, falling trees or high temperatures when those conditions prevail. There are also warnings about potato blight but nothing about sun glare – why not? People are killed or seriously injured on Irish roads every year because of sun glare, according to the RSA. Victims are not only motorists and their passengers but also cyclists and walkers. In an article in the Irish Independent in January 2016 journalist Allison Bray wrote that Gardaí do not compile statistics on the number of road accidents that are directly the result of sun glare. In relation to the above accident last January the Gardaí recorded the cause as ‘careless driving’ - not sun glare. Most drivers are shocked the first time they encounter sun glare and don’t know how to react. Pulling down the sun visor is useless – the sun may be well below the visor. Indecision during the next few seconds of panic can result in death or serious injury for themselves or other road users. If motorists are regularly warned about weather conditions why not about sun glare? Regular warnings during winter months via the media such as newspapers and national and local radio, would gradually create general awareness and help to save lives.

Some advice in relation to sun glare: 1. Clean the windscreen inside and out -
On January 19th this year two Dingle sisters were involved in a traffic accident a few kilometres from the town. They had been visiting a sick friend and were almost home when, rounding a bend, they were completely blinded by the glare of the late afternoon sun.
2. Wear polarised glasses – expensive ones
Their car veered to the right and crashed into a large 4x4. Both women suffered serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured. Three ambulances took the victims to University Hospital Kerry. Both sisters were released after 82 days treatment.
5. If sun glare encountered - Slow down - pull over and stop
Sun glare is particularly dangerous during the winter months because

3. Install a sun visor extender – how effective are they? 4. Change drive times to avoid the sun 6. If you have a front seat passenger get them to roll down their window and look out to see if the road is clear of obstacles such as parked vehicles. 7. Putting it bluntly – if you can’t see - STOP DRIVING! )

Consumers are affiliating themselves with brands that represent their values, but they are also abandoning those that don’t. Beef Stew and Colcannon
will allow the wine to reduce and thicken. Add enough beef stock to cover everything. Season well and place the lid on the pot.
Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School
Put this in the oven and cook for about 2½ hours (check after an hour and top up with some stock if needed). The stew is almost ready if the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
2 tbsp. tomato puree 750ml of red wine 300ml-400ml of beef stock 200g of button mushrooms, cut into quarters handful of parsley, chopped
For the colcannon (make this while the stew is in the oven)
oil salt and pepper A well-made stew is a timeless dish that never fails to bring comfort and warmth to your table. A chunky meat stew while it is simple to make, a good one will reveal flavours that are complex, the sweetness of the vegetables, the subtleness of herbs, the tenderness of the slow cooked beef with a savoury broth. Colcannon, on the other hand, is a creamy and indulgent mash of potatoes and cabbage. Together, beef stew and colcannon create a harmonious balance of flavours and textures, making them a meal to beat off any dark evening. Ingredients For the stew 1kg of beef (chuck), diced 1 tbsp. flour 1 large onion, diced 4 garlic cloves, peeled and diced 3 large carrots, peeled and cut into large chunks handful of thyme fresh bay leaf
Put a pan on over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and add the mushrooms. Once they have browned add them to the stew and continue to cook for about 15-20 minutes.
For the colcannon 6 large potatoes, peeled and halved ¼ head of green cabbage, washed and chopped finely 100g butter 150ml cream salt and pepper Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Put the beef in a bowl, season with salt and pepper, add in the flour and mix. Put a large ovenproof pot over a medium to high heat. Once hot add a little oil and then add half of the beef. Once you have browned the beef, remove it, add the remaining beef and repeat the browning. Remove the beef and add a little oil and then add the onions, garlic and carrots. Stir a few times and allow the vegetables to take on some colour, add the thyme and tomato puree. Stir this well and allow the tomato to cook for a minute or so. Add the red wine. Turn down the heat and cook for about 10 minutes, this
Add the potatoes and a good pinch of salt to a pot of cold water, bring this to the boil and then simmer for about 25 minutes or until cooked. While the potatoes are cooking, add the cabbage to a large pot of boiling salted water. Cook the cabbage for about 2-3 minutes, strain and add back to the pot. Add in the butter and cream. Put back on over a low heat and cook for about 5 minutes. Once the potatoes are cooked, strain them, place the potatoes back into the pot and back over a medium heat. Stir well and cook for about 2-3 minutes to remove as much moisture as possible. Take off the heat and mash them well. Add the cabbage, cream and butter mixture the potatoes and mix everything well together. Season well with salt and pepper. Remove the stew from the oven and add in some chopped parsley, taste and season. Put a spoon of colcannon in each bowl, ladle some stew to the side. Bain Taitneamh as!!

It’s All In The Mind: 6 Short Mindful Exercises Orla Smyth
West Kerry Live Printing Printing SolutionS for You & Your BuSineSS
Our Printing ServiceS If you think you don’t have time to practise mindfulness, think again! You can begin to introduce present moment awareness into your daily routine right now. Here are some short simple practices you can do any time, anywhere . 1. Yawn and stretch for 10 seconds every hour. Do a fake yawn if you have to. That will trigger real ones. Say “ahh” as you exhale. Notice how a yawn interrupts your thoughts and feelings. This brings you into the present. Then stretch really, really slowly for at least 10 seconds. Notice any tightness and say “ease” or just say hello to that place (being mindful — noticing without judgement). Take another 20 seconds to notice and then get back to what you were doing. 2. Three hugs, three big breaths exercise. Hug someone tight and take 3 big breaths together. Even if they don’t breathe with you, your breathing will ground them. 3. Stroke your hands. Lower or close your eyes. Take the index finger of your right hand and slowly move it up and down on the outside of your fingers. Once you have mindfully stroked your left hand, swap and let your left hand stroke the fingers of your right hand. 4. Mindfully eat a raisin. Take a raisin or a piece of chocolate and mindfully eat it. Slow down, sense it, savour it and smile between bites. Purposefully slow down. Use all your senses to see it, touch it, smell it, and sense it. Then gently pop it into your mouth and really savor it. Savour its texture, its taste, how it feels in your mouth. Let it linger and then swallow it. After you have swallowed it, let your lips turn up slightly and smile. Do the same thing for each raisin you eat or bite you take. 5. Mindful breathing for one minute. Lower your eyes and notice where you feel your breath. That might be the air going in and out at your nostrils or the rise and fall of your chest or stomach. If you can’t feel anything, place your hand on your stomach and notice how your hand gently rises and falls with your breath. If you like, you can just lengthen the in breath and the out breath or just breathe naturally. Your body knows how to breathe. Focus on your breath. When your mind wanders, as it will do, just bring your attention back to your breath. You might like to say ‘thinking’ when you notice your thoughts and just gently shepherd your attention back to your breath. This can be done for longer than one minute. However, even for one minute it will allow you to pause and be in the moment. Or you might just like to breathe out stress on the out breath and breathe in peace on the in breath. 6. An aspiration. Decide on an aspiration. Just ask yourself this question: What is my heart’s aspiration? Pause for about 20 seconds. Do this a second or third time and write down what comes. Perhaps it is to come from love, or to be kind to yourself or others or to be patient. Once you decide which aspiration you like best, say that at the beginning of the day. This will set you up for your day and your interactions with others (and even with yourself) Orla Smyth - certified teacher of the Mindfulness Based Stress Relief (MBSR) and the Dot B. -mindful awareness for children programs / orlasmyth67@gmail.com 32 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The Narcotics Anonymous Message An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live. Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug. Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace. Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean. Dingle NA meetings are on Tuesdays 7.30pm & Fridays 8.30pm, in the Dingle Presbytery, off Green St, V92 AT18. www.nasouth.ie NA helpline 087 – 138 6120

Now is a great the time of year to take a look at what you are spending on your electricity, gas and oil. Energy prices now are changing all the time and it’s becoming an increasing cost for businesses. There has never been a better time to get in contact with an energy broker to work on your behalf. An energy broker has a relationship with energy supplier and working to get the best rate for you. Some energy brokers work on commission and others charge a fee to it’s important to ask this question straight away. A good energy broker will come back to you every year with a new price and new contract, they should also advise on if it’s worth your while to break a contract. Etc. This reduces your workload and save you time and money.

Film Review Killers of the Flower Moon Tom Ó Neachtain Killers of the Flower Moon is Martin Scorsese’s new film, with his familiar collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in central roles. The story centres on the Osage Tribe of Native Americans in Oklahoma as they discover oil under their reservation and become, for a time, the richest people on earth. When members of the tribe are found dead under suspicious circumstances, the FBI steps in to investigate, with many local businessmen, and supposed “friends” of the Osage, considered key suspects. Killers of the Flower Moon is a huge film. Its story has a vast scope, spanning decades, giving deep analyses of multiple complex characters. It meditates on grand ideas, namely the nature of greed and trust, while crafting a detailed depiction of Osage society and their relationship with the parasitic white settlers. Scorsese is a legend in modern cinema. He can create cinematic events solely on the merits of the film’s story and his direction, instead of the franchise name-value most tentpole releases rely on nowadays. Killers of the Flower Moon deserves to be seen en masse, if only to experience one of cinema’s greatest directors telling a fascinating and important true-story. However, the film’s main issue concerns the way in which Scorsese and co. decided to construct the narrative. The plot is simply all over the place, adding so many sub-plots and inconsequential side-characters that it becomes difficult to figure out which characters we’re meant to be invested in. Weirdly, the film often down-plays important plot-beats, making the mysteries and reveals in the story seem inconsequential. The film also spends far too much time setting the scene in the first half and by the time the story gets going, it struggles to evenly disperse attention to the many plot-lines it has set up. The sheer quantity of needless side-characters and narrative dérives make the film’s bladder-bursting three-and-a-half-hour runtime tough to justify. Having said that, the film’s huge cast bring their a-game, namely the central trio of Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro. Their performances are multifaceted and emotive, growing more realistic as the characters’ true-natures are slowly revealed over the course of the story. The complex dynamics between the characters are the film’s best aspect, and keep the story engrossing even when it goes off-track. Killers of the Flower Moon is old-fashioned in the best way, but struggles to translate its dense story to the screen. However, phenomenal performances across the board make sure the story always connects.

We have great memories of Alice in Camp, an elegant and lovely lady. She came to live amongst us in 1959 having married Pádraig Murphy, the principal teacher at Camp National School. Alice's daughter, Cróine shared many happy memories of her mother' s long life in a beautiful family tribute at Alice's funeral Mass in St. John, Tralee. Alice was laid to rest alongside her husband Padraig in Camp Cemetery on Monday 23rd October. Many friends and relatives of the family were there to extend their sympathy and remember Alice, a woman, who was highly respected and much loved by all of us in Camp. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis. Rest In Peace, Alice. Sympathy is extended to all the family. Mike Smith Curradubh, Camp passed away peacefully on 3rd November 2023 in University Hospital Kerry, Tralee. Mike was a nice friendly man, always around the village enjoying meeting up with everybody. In his final years he was very happy in Asperee Nursing Home, Camp where everybody enjoyed his company and he made many friends. Mike was laid to rest in Camp Cemetery following the requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill at St. Mary's Church, Camp. Sympathy is extended to his sister Eileen, brother Pat, nieces, nephews, neighbours, relatives and friends. R.I.P. Mike. Chris O'Driscoll Fundraiser Night at the dogs - A massive thank you to all who sponsored races, adverts and raffle prizes, to everyone for buying tickets and making the night a great one. Staff at CBS The Green went the extra mile to support a former student Chris O'Driscoll. Ms. Kelliher and Ms. Anne Moore ran and walked 60 miles, 2 miles a day, to support Chris' recovery journey after he suffered a stroke on January 1st this year. They raised an impressive €2,830, which was presented to Chris's sister Aisling. The money raised will go towards Chris's ongoing recovery. Well done all, a wonderful achievement and much appreciated by everybody.

MARATHONERS: Well done to two of our most committed underage coaches, Gavin O’Connor and Grainne Keary, who recently completed their marathon efforts.

email your CV and covering letter to eolas@cflt.ie Tidy Towns / Baile Slachtmhara Tidy Towns has been running in our community since 2015 , and we as a group continue to enhance our local area. Some locals in their own townlands help out with flower beds, grass cutting, weeding and litter picking, which make a big difference and we are very grateful and appreciate this. The number of volunteers who form part of the active group that regularly meet has decreased and we have reached a junction where we need extra volunteers to continue. We need extra people to assist and share the workload - our projects have increased while the number of volunteers has decreased immensely We have lots of further ideas but unable to progress any due to lack of volunteers. Also there are several categories in the Tidy Towns Competition that we are not even focusing on - so to continue to grow and expand and progress in all categories we need help. We require help in many areas, administrative, gardening, planning under the categories Meeting in: Halla Le Cheile on Thursday , November 16th at 8pm At this meeting: we will decide the future of our local Tidy Towns group. Your presence on the night and your involvement in the future is what we need. Hope to see you there. Solar Systems Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at Sinéadtoagus Sheila a cost. D’fhan sé ann go dtí gur éirigh sé as sa bhliain 2008. Seo é an chéad leabhar atá foilsithe leis cé go raibh altanna in irisí éagsúla aige le blianta anuas. Caitheann sé a chuid ama anois ag garraíodóireacht, ag léamh agus ag triall go rialta ar an bhfód dúchais sa Leithtriúch, áit a bhfuil an sean-thigh cóirithe aige.’ - Coiscéim

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Aimsir Is beag an duine a chuirfeadh an cheist an bhfuil aon bhogadh le teacht ar an mbáistigh. Ní chuireann mar go bhfuil baisteach throm nó spreach bhraonach ag réiteach do raiste mór. Ar an dtaobh eile don scéal níl aon díobháil mhór déanta ag an ngaoth go fóill agus tá sí againn go bog ach is dócha gur ag spealladh sa bhreis a bheidh an dís. Is cuimhin liom Feabhra timpeall chúig bliana fichead ó shoin agus an tsíor bháisteach forleathan go mór mhór i mbailte beaga agus fuaireamair samplaí don anaithe. Bhí gasra againn ag teacht abhaile ón nDaingean nuair a dúirt comharsa dhom ‘go raibh Bóthar na gCloch imithe ag an uisce. Ní raibh sé ach socair a dó nó a trí do sheachtainí. Bhí cuma curtha ar an mbóthar tréis a raibh do gach pórog grinn a cuireadh i bhfearas, glanta amach béal an chuain. Mar a dúradh ‘tá an bóthar imithe’. Níl le déanamh ach súil le Dia feabhas a chur ar an aimsir, mar go bhfuil scata éireann daoine marbh ag tuillte le déanaí. Bás Le déanaí ar an 28ú lá do Dheire Fomhair fuair Nóra Ní Shé ó Chomdhíneoil agus Clochar bás. Is mó amhrán a chan sí ag na céilithe i mBrú na Gráige agus ba mhil í a glór. Méala mór a bás dá hiníon Máire, dá mac Páidí, a deartháir Éamon agus a deirfiúr Bríd, garchlann gaolta agus cáirde. Soillse na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam. Fuair Frank Maunsell ó Chill Chuimín, Caisleán an Ghriaghaire, bás le déanaí i mBleá Cliath. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Bríd agus a chlann, Deirdre, Aogán agus Cian, gar chlann, ghaolta agus cáirde. Solas Dé ag a anam. Fuair David Knott a bhí ag cur fé i gCnoc na nGabhar, Lios Uí Chearnaigh an Clochán bás lé déanaí. Méala mór a bhás dá chlann, Eric, Judí agus Sharon.
Ciarraí Thoir i gcraobh chluiche an Chontae Dé Domhnaigh. Mheasas agus go leor eile go mbeadh an bhua ag Ciarraí thoir gan pioc dua, ach ní mar sin a bhí, bhuadar, ach le aon phoinnte amhain. Bhí Ciarraí Thoir chun cinn le chuig phoinnte ní ró fhada roimh deire an chluiche ach tháinig Ciarraí Láir i ngiorracht poinnte dhóibh sara séideadh an fheadóig dheireannach. Chuadar chomh gairid teacht ar chómhtharrac le Ciarraí Thoir go bhfuil cúig craobh buaite acu as sé chraobh le déanaí. Is maith iad araon. Is dócha go mbeidh Roche ar ais a bhí an- mhaith. Toradh 2-10 v 0-15. Oireachtas Bhí féile mór an Oireachtais ar bun an deireadh seachtaine seo caite i gCill Áirne. Bhí na mílte ann ó ar fuaid gach contae i gCuige Mumhan, Connacht cuid mhaith do chontaethe in Uladh agus scataí ó Laighean i mbun amhráin, ceol, aithriseoireacht, agallaimh beirte, lúibíní rinnce ar an sean nós. Fuair an t-amhránaí Sláine Ní Chathalláin an dara duais i gcomórtas Choirn uí Riada amhránaíochta ar an sean-nós oíche Dé Sathairn. Tá an-mholadh ag dul do Shláine, mar níl sí ach cáilithe le páirt a ghlacadh sa chomórtas. Is maith i Sláine, deinimid go léir comhgháirdeachas léi. Seo é a céad bliain imeasc sean-cheardaithe. Ó Thuaidh, agus Up Coimín.
