It's hard to believe that we are celebrating the 20th Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh. We started of with a tiny event in 2005 and we have been evolving ever since. Our purpose is the same, to share the music and song of Corca Dhuibhne with the next generation and visitors, to celebrate and remember those who gave it to is and to bring the best of performers to Corca Dhuibhne to enjoy their music.

We have a fantastic lineup of concerts and events with the best of local and visiting musicians as well as those travelling from Scotland and beyond, to join us for 5 days of music and fun in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. Our new events include set dancing classes on the 15th, 16th & 17th of Feb and a Céilí Mór Seitenna on Saturday afternoon. We also have, for the first time, classes on piano accompianment. The classes are really filling up quickly, with some sold out and others with just a few places remaining, so if you want to attend a class, the advice it to register as soon as you can. Tickets have just gone on sale for the concerts which take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (15,16 & 17 Feb) nights so, to be safe, better to book now!

Welcoming Spring by Bringing the Outside In!

Many will argue that true Spring does not start until March yet it is deeply entrenched in our pre-Christian roots that Spring begins in or around the first of February. Historically we marked its onset with the celebration of Imbolc, in honour of the Irish Goddess Bríd, who is associated with Spring, the cycle of life, fertility and birth. She was later “Christianized” and became St. Bridget. Astronomers and meteorologists have long debated when Spring truly starts but let’s not doubt our ancestors. For us Celts, we mark the halfway point of Summer and Winter seasons celebrating each solstice without question. Simply accepting that around the twenty-first of June is Mid-Summer then logic follows that Spring starts at the beginning of February.

With that out of the way, let’s get back to our roots and welcome Spring into our bodies by shedding the Winter layers and embrace the light, bright days that lie ahead. Whereas Winter was a time to conserve energy and reduce activity, Spring is a time of regeneration, new beginnings, new growth and a renewal of spirit. According to the philosophy of Chinese medicine and reflected in our own Celtic traditions, Spring is represented by the wood element and includes the liver and its complementary organ, the gallbladder, these two organs are usually the primary targets for Springtime cleansing and health regimens.

A Spring-led diet supports the liver which is a major detoxification organ in the body. The liver is responsible for the smooth flow of energy (Qi) throughout the body. When the liver functions smoothly - physical and emotional activity throughout the body also runs smoothly. So, for optimum health this Spring, move your Qi! Many of the illnesses that are typical of the change between Winter and Spring such as respiratory problems, chest infections, coughs, colds and constipation are symptomatic of stagnated and congested Qi in the body. Your body's natural instinct is to rid itself of toxins by cleaning out the heavy, dampening foods of Winter fare and embrace all that is young, fresh and green! A Spring “cleanse” can be a gentle and effective way to tune in with your body's efforts paving the way for energy to move freely throughout the body.

I cringe when I see all the fad "detox" diets out there and must remind you that is not wise to embark on a severe fast without proper advice and supervision. The bible tells us that the forty days and forty nights did Jesus the world of good, but it may be too ambitious of us mere mortals. A far simpler way to naturally rejuvenate the body is to look to Mother Nature and follow her lead. Eating foods that mirror nature's energy shift by growing upwards, over the ground is the most helpful way you can assist your liver to do what it does best - detoxification and nourishing the blood. Celery, rhubarb, spring onions, leeks, young green leaves including dandelion and nettle leaves and asparagus will soon be coming into season. These foods are rich in fibre, vitamins and chlorophyll and are most beneficial for dispelling toxins. Their tangy, bitter flavour is perfect to spur on our digestive juices to make the most of these foods. The Spring diet feels lighter than Winter foods. Embrace this shift by reducing heavy foods such as red meats, starchy and stodgy carbohydrates, salted, preserved foods and dairy foods for now.

Replace with lighter, more digestible proteins found in fresh fish, eggs, beans and seeds. Sprouted seeds are particularly beneficial right now as they capture the true essence of Spring and supply the highest amount of vitamins, minerals and enzymes than any other food, nourishing and strengthening the whole body. Introduce a little raw food now by adding freshly chopped young greens, scallions and herbs to soups, vegetable stews and warm bean salads. Cleansing and refreshing, infusions made from young Nettle and Dandelion leaves are perfect for Spring as they cleanse the blood and support the detoxification process.

Be aware that when you move from a heavy-laden diet, particularly if it is well-established, to one that is clean, fresh and green, you may experience some resistance.

Crankiness, cravings, anger and agitation are some of the emotional “sideeffects” of Liver energy in motion. The foods of Spring provide the antidote to both the physical and emotional challenges that arise this time of year, helping you to stick with it and encouraging you to explore further into the season. Look in your garden or the hedgerows for clues of what to eat, what is Mother Nature suggesting to us? Despite our advanced education and understanding of science and technology, we must not underestimate the value of our natural-occurring environment and its relevance to our health and well-being. Just as the Sun and stars align with the Seasons, so do our physical and emotional bodies align with Nature and its Seasons, so quit fighting it and go with the flow!

A few weeks ago I was encouraging you to continue your Winter’s rest after Christmas and not to feel pressurized to make drastic New Year’s resolutions that go against the natural energy flow of January. However, now as we move into a new month and a new season, those resolutions will have a much greater chance of getting off the ground. Be assured that when you take positive steps in the right direction, the energy of Spring, your environment and of our own Celtic Goddess, Bríd have got your back!

DEPOSIT RETURN SCHEME.

Dingle Tidy Towns Group welcome the National Deposit Return Scheme which is due to be launched on February 1st. We understand that at least one local outlet will become fully equipped to facilitate the returns as smaller equipment to facilitate the smaller outlets is not yet freely available.

Basically any drink sold in a container (plastic or tins) with a Re-Turn Logo will cost the consumer extra from February 1st. The extra fee will be 15cent deposit for every plastic bottle and aluminium can ( 150ml to 500ml) and 25 cent deposit for drinks containers with a size of more than 500ml and less than 3 litres.

The Deposit paid will be refunded when the container is returned undamaged to a Re-Turn Machine. That's the theory lets hope its successful!

Dún Chaoin Playground Fundraiser

Kerry County Council has granted Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin outline planning permission to develop a public playground on a plot of land leased from the Office of Public Works, north of the Great Blasket Centre.

The proposed budget for the project is €200,000 and with help from next year’s LEADER fund 80% of the costs will be covered.

We need to raise the other 20% or €40,000 in the meantime.

Fatal Accident

-Weekly Irish Times, 29 July 1905

On Sunday evening, Mr. John Hussey, Magistrate, of Edenburn House, Gortatlea, and son of Mr. Samuel Hussey met with an accident which subsequently proved fatal.

Mr. Hussey, who was staying with his wife and family at Inch Strand, near Aunascaul (sic), was walking along the edge of a cliff which overlooks the strand and which is above the road that runs directly underneath.

Unfortunately, he suddenly lost his balance and fell over, landed on his head on the road and fractured his skull.

He was brought to his lodge in an unconscious state where Dr. Kane and Dr. Hickson were quickly in attendance. Dr. White came on Monday but despite all the medical skill at hand the injured gentleman succumbed on Monday afternoon. Mr. Hussey, aged 46, was a great athlete in his day.

Poacher shot dead

-Ulster Echo, 25 June 1898

Intelligence has reached Tralee of a shocking incident at Waterville, in South Kerry. It appears that a man named O’Connor was poaching salmon when he was surprised by a water bailiff named Riordan.

The bailiff called on O’Connor to surrender but the poacher fled. The bailiff pursued the man but his gun went off accidentally, Riordan alleges, and the poacher was shot dead. The bailiff subsequently surrendered himself to the police.

Malicious damage in Dingle

-Kerry Evening Post, 02 May 1896

George Collier, landowner, is claiming compensation from the County for loss and damage sustained by him. He claims that a number of his elm and oak trees having been unlawfully and maliciously destroyed on his property at Ballybeg, Dingle. The amount of compensation sought is £5.

Meanwhile, in Ballinacourty Parish Michael Pierce is seeking compensation for a cock of hay which was maliciously set on fire and completely destroyed at Annagap on the night of the 12th of January 1896. The amount of the claim is £25.

(As well as being a landowner George Collier above was the Government’s Receiver of Wrecks in West Kerry).

Policeman charged with bigamy

-Kerry Reporter, 06, August, 1898

A policeman named Michael Quane was arrested in Ennistymon, County Clare on Tuesday and lodged in Tralee Gaol, charged with having committed bigamy at Ardfert in 1888.

Quade, it appears, has had upwards of twenty years service in the force. He was originally attached to the depot in Dublin where, in the year 1883, he married a Miss Hughes.

He subsequently got transferred to Kerry. In the year 1888, while stationed at Liscahane, between Tralee and Ardfert, he married a Miss Shea, the daughter of a local farmer. He was later transferred to Clare and left his newly wedded wife at home.

It appears he communicated with her on a regular basis and sent her money every month. The police have both marriage certificates. The accused has been remanded in custody to Tralee on Thursday next.

Lost control of car

- Kerry Evening Post, 24 May, 1913

While motoring near Glencar yesterday. Mr. Cooke, Board of Works Engineer, Tralee, had the misfortune to break his leg through an accident involving the car. While on a steep hill the car, which belonged to the Tralee Motor Garage Company, owing to the brakes becoming defective was upset. Mrs. Cooke and the driver Barrett were also thrown out but escaped being injured. The injured gentleman was brought home yesterday evening by the car from Benner’s Hotel, which was sent out from Tralee.

(Not a good add for the Tralee Motor Garage Co. Was the car an early open top motor or convertible that caused all three people to be thrown out?).

New balls, please!

A football match under the rules of the GAA was held in Dingle last Sunday between the local team and Valentia. The visitors arrived at around five o’clock accompanied by a large contingent of supporters. They were met by an expansive gathering of local followers who were headed up by the Dingle brass band.

The day was a very fine one, however, in the evening a strong wind blew up from the south-west. By the time both teams were ready to begin it was half-past six and the number of spectators was estimated at over three thousand.

Valentia won the toss and played with the wind.

They drove the ball towards their opponents’ ground and kept it there for a considerable amount of time but then the ball suddenly burst.

A second ball was drafted in and scrutinised for any defects. The match resumed but after a few minutes the substitute ball also burst. A third ball was elected and the game recommenced but after some time the sowing or stitching gave way and the match was stopped.

A delay of over thirty minutes followed and the players contented themselves by jumping around the field. It was getting late by the time the game resumed and all obstacles had been overcome but it certainly was an occasion to be remembered. The final score was Dingle 1 goal and 2 points to Valentia’s 1 point.

As we move into February and the days start to stretch, this quieter period is a time for those of us directly involved in tourism to recharge our batteries as well as do our planning, marketing and maintenance.

Marketing & Planning for 2024

Annually Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne (CTCD)/Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) utilizes these few months to attend some of the consumer shows and trade workshops and avail of the marketing opportunities presented to highlight how wonderful our part of the country is. As potential visitors start their own holiday planning, we have noticed a marked increase in enquiries coming through the office which we pass straight onto our members.

As we mentioned in the last edition of the West Kerry Live Pádraig Ó Scannláin who owns and runs Gleann Loic farmhouse in Dún Chaoin attended the Stuttgart Holiday Trade Show on our behalf and had a very positive response from our German neighbors. Last weekend was a chance to promote the Peninsula to our home market at the Dublin Holiday World Show where we were represented by local business owners Gary Curran of Greenmount House & Jamie Flannery of Dingle Sea Safari. It was great to meet people who have such fond memories of West Kerry from when they were young and remind them of the heritage, culture, language and natural beauty they have on their door step.

It is our intention to continue promoting the Peninsula in the coming weeks at some of the busier Shopping Centres in neighbouring counties to try and encourage more out of season visitor trade and then later in the year we will once again be going over to our sister city West Springfield for the Eastern States Exposition (The Big E) which has a foot fall in excess of 1.5m people each year over a 17-day period. Once again, we are so proud to be able to say a mighty congratulations to some of our local businesses on their recent achievements. We would like to congratulate Nicky Foley of Solas Restaurant in Dingle for their Michelin Bib Gourmand Award. The Irish Independent Readers Travel Awards were announced and John O’Farrell of Pax House in Dingle won Best Small Stay in Ireland and to Brian & Helen Heaton of Castlewood for their 3rd place in Ireland’s top 10 Small Stay spot. A massive well done to the Dingle Skellig Hotel for winning the Best 4 Star Hotel Award, plus another to the Inch Community for their 2nd place in the Ireland’s Best Beach category. We must also mention the whole of Kerry as winners of the Best Holiday County award.

Visiting Delegations: We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting the following delegations on the Peninsula this year.

1) As part of the Western Massachusetts Trade and Tourism Summit visitor from our Sister City, West Springfield, in the USA will be here from May 1st and will stay on to enjoy FÉILE NA BEALTAINE 2nd - 4th May 2024, and our shared culture and heritage.

2) The Annual Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM) 24th -26th September 2024. This medical conference will be held at the Dingle Skellig Hotel with visitors travelling from all around the world.

3) The International Regenerative Tourism Conference 19th – 20th November 2024. This is part of the EU funded Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism (CE4RT) programme that 10 of our very own local businesses are currently taking part in. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Congratulations to Mairead Crean, Knockgloss Beg on celebrating her 40th. birthday at The James Hotel, Tralee recently. It was a wonderful occasion for Mairead and all her family and many friends. Mairead was born on 26th January, 1984, on a Camp Fair Day, a big day in the village in olden times, the first fair of the year. There were 6 fairs in Camp in the course of the year a couple hundred years ago. The January Fair was a cattle and sheep fair and there are still stories told about the fair in the village. Mairead, Go maire tú an céad, may you enjoy many, many more birthday celebrations! FUNDRAISER

A cheque was presented to the sum of €1425 to Caitriona O'Mahony, Pieta House by members of Camp Swimmers, Claire O'Driscoll, Mary Cantillon Moran, Susan Barrett, Nora Scanlon and Marguerite Egan, also present were Santa and Mrs Claus, Sean Scannell and Sandra Daw and Anne O Sullivan and Teresa Cashman of Anne’s Cafe.

The money was raised in the lead up to Christmas and at the Christmas Day Swim, with over 50 swimmers taking part. A huge thank you to the local and wider community for their support and donations. And well done to all those who organised this fundraiser for what is indeed a very worthy cause. Go raibh mile!

BICENTENARY CURRADUBH BRIDGE

This is the bicentenary of the building of the Curradubh bridge in Camp.

The inscription 1824 on a stone on the bridge is now faded but still legible. The bridge is most famous for the accident that occurred in 1893, when the Dingle train fell off the track into the river Finglas with the loss of 3

lives. Alfred Redshaw, train driver and 2 others lost their lives in the crash.

The Dingle Railway line opened in 1891 and this was the first tragedy on the line.

Ron Redshaw, from Ontario, Canada, a great Grandson of Alfred Redshaw and his wife visited the site of the accident earlier this year. It was indeed a poignant visit for Ron, who told of the sadness of the occasion when his great grandmother, pregnant with their third child, had to bury her young husband who was killed in the accident, in Rath Cemetery in Tralee. She then returned home to Northern Ireland and later emigrated to Canada with her children, where the family resides today.

The bridge was built before the Dingle train, which ran from 1891 - 1953. It was not erected by the Railway authorities. In fact it is believed that it was a few local stonemasons who built it, the O Connor, Coopers Upper Camp, the Moores in Curracullenagh and there are others that come to mind who may have carried out this work.

Any more information out there about who might have built the bridge, be delighted to hear it. It is indeed a great example of stonework and workmanship, still standing the test of time, built 200 years ago this year.

BURN'S NIGHT

Once again the literati of the locality turned up in big numbers this year for Burn's Night in The Railway Tavern, Camp on Friday night.

The famous Scottish poet would be pleased with all the talent around the place. And the staple dish of the night, The Haggis, was presented with panache and style and went down a treat. Well done Liam and Brendan and all who make sure Burns Night is a night to remember in the annual theatrical calendar of events in Camp. Go raibh mile!

Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday or Skelligs Night?

By the time the next issue of West Kerry Live hits the stands, on February 15, the pre-Lenten celebrations and festivals around the world will have come and gone.

The Church introduced a ban on eating meat, eggs and dairy products, such as butter and cheese, during Lent in preparation for Easter. This was in commemoration of the forty days of fasting spent by Jesus in the desert.

All of those products had to be consumed before Lent and so the pancake, Ireland’s favourite treat on Shrove Tuesday, was born. Over the centuries the period before Lent gradually developed into local festival celebrations which included binge eating and drinking, music, dancing, dressing up, marriages, games and hanky-panky. The best known pre-Lenten carnival is Brazil’s Mardi Gras, (Fat Tuesday) closely followed by those in New Orleans and Venice.

But Shrove Tuesday was marked in very different fashion in Cork city, according to a report in the Kerry Evening Post two days after Shrove Tuesday, in 1849.

‘The conduct of the brutal mobs of men and women, many of them disguised in hideous or grotesque costumes who thronged the streets during the night with lighted tar barrels and torches, blowing horns, insulting and rough handling unprotected females, throwing stones, breaking windows and wrecking houses was most outrageous.’

Folklorist Shane Lehane, writing in the Irish Times in 2019, records events in Blarney and Cobh on Shrove Tuesday which was called Skelliking Day or Skelliging Day.

He states; ‘Up to recent times in those towns the boys, on leaving school that day, were free to chase the girls leaving their school. The unfortunate girls were corralled and doused with water’.

Lawlors

There’s no mention as to the origin of this practice but it may be connected to the tradition of men and women going to the Great Skellig where lent was observed a week, some say ten days, later than on the mainland. Does the water represent sea spray on what must have been a perilous journey by boat to the Skellig Rock in February?

The Skellig monks did not accept the 10-day change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar which Pope Gregory introduced in 1582 and they continued to observe Easter based on the old calendar.

According to some sources young couples who did not marry before Lent could get married on the Skellig Rock during that extended preLenten period.

However, over time the tradition of going to the Skellig evolved into an escape from the mainland and from parental control and provided young people with the opportunity to get together on the remote island for their own amusements.

The ‘Skelligs Lists’ were born out of this latter activity. The lists were a popular creation of poems aimed at pairing off the likeliest and unlikeliest young, and not so young, well-known local spinsters and bachelors on a boat trip to the Skelligs to be wedded. This was for the amusement of the masses and the mortification of the named victims. If those individuals had some notable physical difference from the norm, such as a big nose or funny walk, then that would be highlighted in the poem.

The belief that marriage was not allowed during Lent on the mainland created a rush to get married on Shrove Tuesday. That special day was said to bring good luck and good fortune to the newlyweds.

However, the Church’s ban on marriage during Lent had no foundation in Canon Law. Lent was established as a period of penitential observance in the lead up to Easter and not as a period of celebration and partying. But the only days that marriages were not allowed during Lent, under Canon Law, were Good Friday and Easter Saturday. That misinterpretation of Canon Law existed in the Church in Ireland until very recently.

memories of Shrove Tuesday, known as Skelligs Night, come from childhood in Bantry. On that night, after devouring the pancakes, we gathered at the windows on the first floor of the house and waited.

Gradually, the distant sounds of people shouting and roaring and of metal scraping on the street surface grew louder and louder. Then, into view came gangs of lads dragging old iron bathtubs filled with blazing car tyres. Their faces were lit by the flames and they were making as much noise as possible by beating drums and banging on pots and pans.

They came from different parts of the town, vying with each other in terms of the number of followers, the noise and the size of the fires. The Scalies gang came from The Quay and Blackrock; The Rockies came from Chapel Street and a section of Market Street and the Glengariffe Road gang need no designation.

The images of those Skellig Nights coupled with the sounds of the metal baths scraping the roadways were implanted for life in all who witnessed and heard those events.

Some 45 years later this writer discussed the possible origin of the Skelligs Night fires in Bantry with the late Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fianachta. His theory was that when people were going to Sceilig Mhichíl in February they took fires with them in iron pots to keep themselves warm on the island during their week-long stay there. Diverse Cultural Events: The festival's diverse program includes historical talks, storytelling sessions, concerts, outdoor events, and the creation of a unique Biddy’s Drink Cocktail recipe, specially concocted for the festival weekend.

Community Revival: Witness the transformation from decline to resurgence as, from 2016's two active Biddy groups, the mid-Kerry region now boasts eleven active traditional groups, with two more in the process of reforming. The festival continues to attract interest from groups

nationwide keen on reviving the tradition.

The journey unfolds with a prelude of events starting on January 27th, including workshops, a concert, and insightful talks, building up to the grand crescendo of the Biddy's Day Parade on February 3rd. Schedule will be released in the coming days on all Biddys Day social media.

Closing Celebration: The festival concludes with a lively Biddy Ball, featuring live music across various venues, and a special Biddy’s Day Cocktail served at Falvey's Bar.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, is a celebration of one of our world's most vulnerable and yet most valuable natural habitats Wetlands are an extremely important habitat for biodiversity and are increasingly threatened. 35% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared in the last 50 years. This February Tralee Bay Wetlands will be running a series of guided nature walks on our own patch of urban wetlands. Additionally there are a series of guided nature walks available and part funded by Kerry Co Council. Guided Wild Wetlands Urban Walk at 2.30pm Friday February 2nd To mark this occasion, there will be a guided public tour on world wetlands day. This guided tour will offer a tour of the wetland, on foot, as well as giving a short talk on the ways that wetlands are vital to our overall well being. Suitable for both Adults & Children. Tickets (Adults €5, children free) can be reserved in advance online.

Nature Bay Walk of Tralee Bay Special Area of Conversation. This wonderful Bay Walk is taking place on Sunday 11th February commencing at 11am Here we will see some of our migratory birds in their natural habitat. These birds have been coming to Tralee Bay since before it was called Tralee Bay and this time of year is the best time to see these birds in huge flocks. Some iconic species we might see are the Canadian Pale Bellied Brent Geese, Red Shanks, Greenshanks and Curlew to name but a few. Again this event is suitable for both adults & children. Suitable outdoor clothing and foot wear are required. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or from the reception desk at visitor centre. This event is part funded by Kerry Co Council. Pork Loin Chop, Sauté Potatoes and Persillade

This is what good home cooking is all about.

To finish the sauté potatoes

Reduce the heat of the potatoes; add another little bit of butter and mix in the persillade. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

For the pork chops

Season the chops well with the salt and black pepper.

Heat a large frying pan to medium heat, add the butter and wait until it foams, but don’t let it burn. Add the chops and cook for about 6 minutes on each side. Transfer them to a warm tray to rest for about 4 minutes.

Add about 80ml of cold water to the pan where the chops were cooking, this will start to form a sauce. Using a wooden spoon stir this around gathering all of the sauce form the pan. Continue to heat for a minute or so until the liquid reduces in volume to a rich sauce.

To serve

Put some of the sauté potatoes with persillade in the centre of a plate, put the chop on top then pour the juices from the pan over the chops and place the sage leaves on top of the pork. Serve the remaining sautéed potatoes on the side.

Look out for a thick pork chop and on the bone if possible. The Persillade sauce, bursting with fresh parsley, garlic, and a hint of lemon, adds a zesty punch to elevate every bite. This dish is a comforting yet elegant addition to any home cook's repertoire, guaranteed to impress friends and family alike."

Serves 4

Ingredients

1 large pork chop on the bone per person, 3cm thick

salt and black pepper

knob of butter

For the sauté potatoes

3 medium potatoes, cut into 1cm/½in and kept in a bowl of cold water

2 tbsp. rapeseed oil

salt and black pepper

knob of butter

For the persillade

handful flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

½ shallot, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, finely chopped

For the garnish

8 sage leaves, fried in butter for one minute

2 tbsp. Dijon mustard

Method

For the sauté potatoes

Put the diced potatoes in a pot of boiling salted water for about one minute and then drain. Allow the drained potatoes to sit in the colander for a couple of minutes to allow as much steam to escape from them as possible.

Heat a large pan and add a little oil once it is hot. Add the potatoes and butter then fry them for about 4-5 minutes over high heat so that they become golden.

For the persillade

Mix together all the ingredients in a small bowl.

Message from Fr. Michael Moynihan

It is great to see the days get longer and the daffodils adding colour to the world. Spring is a time of hope. The response to the psalm last weekend was Oh that today you would listen to His voice, harden not your hearts. While that invitation was given by the psalmist thousands of years ago, it echoes down to our time. There is a sense of urgency about it. Not tomorrow or some day soon. Right now. Right now we are invited to listen and take on board what God might be saying to us. We have an idea of the message. It speaks of love, forgiveness, generosity, trust and hope. The writer of the psalm encouraged the people of his time to harden not their hearts. Today there are many distractions that draw us away from the voice of God. We pray that our hearts may not be hardened to the voice of God or the needs of others,

Bishop Ray Browne has issued a Pastoral letter to the people of the diocese of Kerry. In the letter he outlines the current reality of the reducing number of priests in the diocese while encouraging the people of each parish to become more active in keeping the faith alive. There will be a listening evening for the people of each parish towards the end of February. It will give people an opportunity to share ideas of living and spreading the Christian message. Further details in the Parish Newsletter and local media.

The proceeds from the Crib appeal in the 3 parish churches will go to Trócaire for its humanitarian work in the Middle East with its partners on the ground. €4,289 has been received to date. Many thanks for your great generosity. Congratulations to Seán Murphy who was ordained a Deacon for the Diocese of Kerry on Sunday last, January 28th, in Glenbeigh Parish Church. It is hoped that Sean will be Ordained a Priest later this year. We keep him in our prayers.

I WANTED TO BE SURPRISED

To such a request, the world is obliging. In just the past week, a rotund porcupine, who seemed equally startled by me.

The man who swallowed a tiny microphone to record the sounds of his body, not considering beforehand how he might remove it.

A cabbage and mustard sandwich on marbled bread.

How easily the large spiders were caught with a clear plastic cup surprised even them.

I don’t know why I was surprised every time love started or ended. Or why each time a new fossil, Earth-like planet, or war. Or that no one kept being there when the doorknob had clearly.

What should not have been so surprising: my error after error, recognized when appearing on the faces of Others.

What did not surprise enough: my daily expectation that anything would continue, and then that so much did continue, when so much did not. Small rivulets still flowing downhill when it wasn’t raining. A sister’s birthday. Also, the stubborn, courteous persistence.

and that when I wake up, the window’s distant mountain remains a mountain, the borrowed city around me is still a city, and standing.

Beidh daltaí na hidirbhliana ó Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne ag léiriú seó ilsiamsa ar an 7ú agus 8ú Feabhra ag a 7.30 i.n i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. Tá súil againn go mbainfidh idir óg agus aosta taitneamh as an seó. Beidh míreanna difriúla sa seó ar nós:

• Isteach agus Amach

• Díobháil sa Daingean

Beidh ticéidí ar fáil roimh ré. Beidh costas €10 ar thicéad do dhaoine fásta, €5 do dhaltaí agus leanaí ,€20 do chlann (2 thuismitheoirí , 2 leanbh/ scoláire). Tá súil againn go mbeidh sibh ann agus go dtabharfaidh sibh tacaíocht do dhaltaí na hidirbhliana.

Transition year students of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne will be staging a variety show on the 7th and 8th of February at 7.30pm in the school and the show will be performed through Irish. The transition year students have been practicing their dance routines, song lyrics and acting since last September. The show will present a variety of entertaining selections from shows such as

• Inside Out

• Sherlock Holmes

Tickets will be available through pre-booking at a cost of €10 for adults, €5 for children and students, €20 for a family ticket (two adults and two children). We hope to see you there supporting our transition year students!

Film Review: The Holdovers

The Holdovers is a nostalgic comedy/drama, which received an impressive five nominations in last week's Oscar announcements, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Giamatti. Giamatti stars as Paul Hunham, a grouchy and generally disliked teacher in a swish New England prep school, who receives the unenviable duty of supervising the students left to stay in school during Christmas break.

Over the season, his curmudgeonly demeanor mellows as he bonds with Angus Tully, a snarky and ill-tempered student, and Mary Lamb, a cafeteria-worker grieving the loss of her son.

The film’s director, Alexander Payne, has proven himself over the last 20 years as a master of down-to-earth dramedies, with films like About Schmidt, Sideways and Nebraska. The Holdovers’ tone is perfectly in tune with those previous films, with its blend of whip-smart comedy and its character’s deep-rooted sadness. Unfortunately, this story doesn’t offer as many narrative surprises as Payne’s previous films did. The story-outline is simple. Each of the three characters come face to face with their own loneliness, eventually coming together and choosing to move on. This structure is endearing and well-paced, but it sticks too closely to an overly familiar formula. From the get go, it’s easy to predict where the characters will end up and how they will have grown by the time the credits roll. That predictability makes the emotional journey less engaging than it should be.

Fortunately, there’s real joy and attention-todetail to be found in every other aspect of the film. It’s 1970’s, New England aesthetic feels detailed and lived-in, with the sets, costuming, and dialogue feeling nicely naturalistic and era-accurate. The film is surprisingly hilarious. Almost every scene provides one great laugh, and the film is densely-packed with wonderfully verbose insults and great comedic

scenarios. Overall, the cast are note-perfect in their roles. Dominic Sessa delivers one of the most impressive and memorable debutperformances in recent memory. His character, Tully, whose difficult personality would have come across as irritating in less talented hands. Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s performance is much more understated than her two co-stars, but she still provides multiple stand-out moments in her small amount of screen time. However, this is Giamatti’s film. He makes Hunham’s grouchiness and eventual growth both comical, and emotionally truthful, painting a nuanced and credible picture of an overall unpleasant man. The cast’s blend of sadness and dry wit imbues the story with an emotional honesty very few films can achieve, and the strength of their efforts vastly outshines the story’s predictability.

The Holdovers is the rare adult-drama which any age-group can enjoy. The plot doesn’t hold many surprises, but the consistently funny dialogue, emotionally-rewarding story, warm aesthetic and impeccable performances make it well worth seeking out.

Teagasc Agro Forestry DARM Kerry Agri Tree Planting Demo

There was a very informative tree planting demo held at the Dingle Mart on Thursday 18th January. This community information session was attended by a range of 35 people from farmers, environmentalists, Community Forum, local businesses and students from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. John Casey, Teagasc; Maureen Kilgore, Irish Agroforestry forum; Daragh Fadden & Eugene Curran, DAFM; Colm Walsh, Lawpro all presented. There are 6,000 trees and hedging available to the community from “Trees on the Land” and this event helped to advise people on how to choose and plant them.
