The Dingle Men's Shed
The Galway currach is back to her best and ready to plough the ocean waves once the days warm up. A big thank you to Eddy Hutch for his guidance and craftsmanship in steering this project. We'll done to Seán and Cian who attended every work session and to all the others who helped. The craft will be kept at Dingle marina and we wish all who sail in her safe passage - may the weather the storms they encounter and avoid the storms they can't weather.
The Dingle Men's Shed hosts an introduction to stained glass painting with local International Sculptor Ben Dearnley www.bendearnley.com
Ever wondered ‘How do they do that?’ when looking at the details in stained glass windows. Well, why not join us for a very special set of 3 activities during the month of March and find out for yourselves!
Meet at An Diseart entrance 14th March at 11am. Afterwards join us for a coffee and chat, which is always at the root of all the Men’s Shed activities.
Solar Systems
you ask how!
The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Part 1: Thursday 14th March at 11am. This year is the centenary of Harry Clarke’s world class windows in Dingle. The ‘Men of The Shed’, invite you to join us for a special visit to An Diseart chapel to view his masterpieces there. We will be given a short talk about his life and works and get to take a deeper look into the detail of these amazing windows. We welcome new members to join us for this morning. It will become the inspiration for our own mini masterpieces.
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.
Part 2 & 3: Thursday 21st and the 28th March at 11 am. A 2 part workshop learning how to make your own piece of hand painted stained glass art. 2 sessions to introduce you to the Art of painting stained glass held at the Dingle Men’s Shed over the following 2 weeks. No previous experience needed, this is an opportunity not to be missed..

Milk Thistle – the Liver Loving Tonic for Spring
Irene FlanneryIn the last edition of this fine publication, we explored the Spring feeling that is well and truly all around us right now. The Spring feeling that prompts us to open the windows, declutter and go mad cleaning around the house and garden. On a deeper level, Spring in Nature is associated with the liver and gall bladder in the human body. It is good to be reminded of the connection between us humans and our natural environment. The consistency and dependability of the Seasons is a refreshing antidote in these unsettling times. Just as we clear out the junk in our homes that has accumulated over the last year, the liver is invigorated by Springtime to do the same in the body by ramping up detoxification pathways. This is not to say that the liver slacks off during the other seasons – it is simply the time of year when food, environment and nature’s energy are perfectly attuned in such a way that benefits the liver the most. With countless detox and cleansing supplements on the market this time of year, it is easy to miss one of the long-standing and established remedies for the liver – Milk Thistle.
Milk thistle has been used medicinally for over 2000 years in Europe, most commonly for the treatment of liver and gallbladder disorders. Native to the Mediterranean, it is now grown worldwide and is used in both Eastern and Western medicine. The primary active constituent of milk thistle is silymarin, which is made up of bioflavonoids known as silybin, silychristin and silydianin. These flavonoids, which are found in the seeds, are thought to help repair liver cells damaged by alcohol and other toxic substances. Silymarin also keeps new liver cells from being destroyed by these same toxins. It reduces inflammation (which is why it is often suggested for people with liver inflammation or hepatitis) and is a potent antioxidant.
During the Middle Ages, milk thistle was associated with the Virgin Mary due to a legend claiming that the white streaks on its leaves were caused by drops of her milk. This association led to the plant being used in Christian art as a symbol of purity and fertility.
Despite the long history of using milk thistle for the liver, medical research has only recently taken a good look at this plant's potential. Several new studies demonstrate its ability to protect the liver against damage and restore liver health after cirrhosis or alcohol abuse. Traditionally used as an antidote to mushroom poisoning from deathcap mushroom, it remains the most effective remedy to this lethal mushroom when administered quickly. While its efficacy has been recognized for centuries, the way it does so is only now being understood. Silymarin, its most active ingredient alters the outer liver membrane cell structure in such a way that certain toxins, as demonstrated with the toxins of the deathcap mushroom, cannot enter the cell. It is thought that similarly, it protects the liver from more common toxins such as alcohol, recreational and prescription drugs as well as chemotherapy and certain industrial chemicals.
Researchers call it a “smart herb” because it seems to know when to produce new cells as well as when to halt the production of bad cells, such as cancer cells. How this herb knows when to help regenerate cells and when to keep them from regenerating is still a matter for science, but
the benefits to the liver are undeniable.
Milk thistle is available in various forms such as liquid extract, tincture, silymarin phosphatidylcholine complex, dried herb capsules and milk thistle tea. It is commonly paired with green tea, artichoke, dandelion, cleavers and burdock among other ingredients which complement its action on the liver. Whichever way you choose to take milk thistle a plausible dosage would be anything from 280-480 mg per day, best taken at night. A word of caution - milk thistle is best avoided if you are allergic to ragweed, artichokes, marigold or daisies. Due to its clear affinity for the liver, consult with your health professional if you are taking medication or receiving treatment for an illness if you are considering adding Milk Thistle in the mix.
Beyond supplementation, nurturing liver health entails holistic lifestyle choices. While milk thistle provides invaluable support, it cannot undo the deleterious effects of poor dietary and lifestyle habits. Hence, prioritizing organic foods, clean water, fresh air, and ample sleep is paramount in minimizing the liver's toxic burden. Additionally, reducing alcohol consumption and avoiding unnecessary chemical exposures further fortify liver resilience.
In essence, as Nature awakens in Spring's embrace, let us heed the call to rejuvenate our internal landscapes. Milk thistle, with its time-honoured legacy and modern scientific validation, offers a beacon of hope for liver health amidst life's challenges. Embracing this botanical ally, alongside mindful diet and lifestyle choices, heralds a season of renewal and vitality for both body and spirit.

Dingle Whiskey Tasting
For our first tasting of 2024, we are inviting Sir Maurice O'Connell of Wayward Irish Spirits from his family home, Lakeview Estate at Lough Leane in Killarney to introduce us to his Liberator and Lakeview Single Estate whiskeys. Maurice is the great great great grandson of Daniel O Connell's younger brother James hence the brand name 'The Liberator.' Given that they only located in Killarney and are very welcoming to any callers, we have wanted to do a tasting with Maurice for quite some time now.
Founded in 2017, Wayward irish Spirits started as a bottler/bonder and bottled produce from both Cooley and Great Northern Distillery and indeed blended these two whiskeys together. Their first launch was in 2020 just before Covid and the lockdown arrived on our shores.
They now have an impressive stable behind them and are well known for their cask finishes which include port and moscatel. Some of these whiskeys are truly excellent and we will have a chance to try them on the night. They also grow their own barley which is then distilled into single pot still whiskey on site where it also matures.
We look forward to welcoming you all back to Dick Mack's pub for what will be a really great way to start our dramming for 2024.

Horror Tragedy in Blennerville
-Tralee Chronicle, October 5, 1855
Last Monday a little girl aged around two years, the daughter of a man named Danahy was burnt to death in Blennerville, The child’s mother was deceased and the little girl was being cared for by an aunt. But on the day of the tragedy she was being minded by a sixteen year-old cousin.
At some point the cousin left the child alone in the house. It appears the little girl ventured too close to the fire in the hearth and her clothing ignited. The poor victim burned to death before being discovered. At the inquest a severe lecture was directed at the cousin for neglecting her responsibility.
(After almost 170 years it is still difficult to read and imagine that terrible story.)
Dingle Farmer Lost £55
-Tralee Chronicle, 04 03, 1864
Daniel Collins, described in the above newspaper as ‘a well to do farmer on the Thrust Estate of Lord Ventry’, and who lives within two miles of Dingle has recently lost the sum of £55. (Around £8,000 today-estimated.)
Reports around the town say he was somewhat inebriated when the loss occurred. The local parish priest and his curates have been appealing to the community to help with the recovery of the money.
(No information as to why he had such a large amount of cash on him. Was his pocket picked?)
Pickpocket Jailed And Other News
-Kerry Evening Post, 28 August, 1858
A young girl named Kennedy, who prosecuted P. Moynahan at the recent Quarter Sessions held in Dingle, was jailed yesterday for the crime of pick-pocketing. Her victim was Margaret Fitzgerald who she robbed of 11 pence at the market-place.
Captain Hilliard brought a large load of barley to the market today – the first of the new season. However, the demand was well below what was expected. The best price offered was just eight pence per stone (14 pounds or 6.35kgs.) The barley was withdrawn from sale and carried home.
The Ventry Races will not go ahead this weekend because of Mr. Hussey’s current illness.
Bye-Bye Kerry – Hello America!
-Kerry Evening Post, 28 April, 1869
Every correspondence, from all parts of Ireland, is bemoaning the growing increase in emigration to America. The story is no different in Kerry, even at this early period of the year. Large numbers have already gone or are in preparation of departure and some sources are forecasting a doubling of the numbers who sailed in the past.
From what we can determine through official figures the biggest movement of emigrants is from Dingle and the west Kerry area. From the town and surrounding countryside an estimated 350 people have left recently and that number is expected to double in the coming months.
A Buzz About The Countryside
-Kerry Evening Post, 01 July 1865
The recent very fine and hot weather has being having an unusual and inexplicable effect on the bee colonies of this region. They are likely to swarm quite suddenly and may easily abandon their residences and disappear.
According to one country gentleman two swarms of bees arrived on his
property this week and both were successfully established in their new accommodations. In the past two weeks a swarm of bees, that was seen roaming around Tralee, settled themselves in a chimney of this newspaper for, it seems, a short rest and recuperation as we have not seen or heard them lately.
Footballer’s Kneecap Kicked Off
-Cork Examiner, 26 July, 1860
Attention has been drawn on numerous occasions to the rough manner in which Gaelic football matches are played. Some accidents of a serious nature have been recorded.
This week a young man who has been maimed for life has been added to that list. John McCarthy, a farmer’s son from the Castlegregory area, had his kneecap kicked off during a match last Sunday.
MILL TO LET - Advert

A mill and store of the best water power in Kerry, with two pair of stones at work within one mile of Dingle town. For further information apply to Michael Rourke, Ballyhea, Dingle.
Tom Crean Pub Licence
-Kerry Reporter, 28 April, 1917
At the recent Dingle Quarter Sessions Thomas Crean of Annascaul applied for a pub licence transfer. He was a man who had a rather interesting career. He was with Captain Scott’s expedition to the South Pole and also on Shackleton’s later expedition.
His solicitor, Mr. Kennedy, told the magistrate that Mr. Crean had taken Captain Evens 150 miles on an ice floe and that he was granted a medal for life saving. He also said Mr. Crean had been presented at Buckingham Palace to the King and Queen.
His Honour complemented Mr. Crean on his great deeds and said his record was one which any man would be proud of.
Lucky Escape For Dunquin Fishermen
-Kerry Evening Post, 13 November, 1895
An accident, which could have resulted in the drowning of four fishermen, occurred at Dunquin last week.
The men went in a canoe to check on some lobster pots. When they were about a mile offshore one of the boat’s ribs, for some inexplicable reason, broke through the canoe’s canvass skin.
The boat began to fill rapidly with water and was sinking when one of the men managed to stem the flow by stuffing his coat into the perforated canvass. The canoe sank within yards of the shore and the men swam and waded to safety.

OBITUARY
Joan CRONIN (née Murphy) Templeogue, Dublin and late of Camp passed away peacefully on January 23, at her home. Beloved wife of the late Tim and loving mother of Aileen, Brian, Karen and Daragh. Sadly missed by her family, daughters-in-law Janet and Jean, grandchildren Laura, Liam, Claire, Sarah, Aisling, Ciara and Cillian, brother Seán, sister Ann, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, colleagues, neighbours and friends. Predeceased by her siblings Maureen, Pádraig, Tomás and Séamus.
Joan was laid to rest in Mount Venus Cemetery following her Funeral Mass on Friday January 26th, in St. Pius X Church, Templeogue, followed by burial at Mount Venus Cemetery, Rathfarnham. A lovely lady, elegant and graceful, Joan is remembered fondly in her native Camp growing up in the Murphy family home in Garrahies.
Education was an institution in the Murphy family, so it was no surprise that Joan pursued the teaching profession herself and was highly successful and well thought of in Mourne Road Primary School, Dublin where she taught all of her life and indeed returned even in later years when needed.
Going back to her great grandmother Margaret Ashe who was the first known teacher in the family, Joan's parents Jackie and Hannah, her three sisters and her brother Padraig were all teachers, promoting and cultivating a love of learning, culture and the Irish Language in their school journey.
Joan and her late husband Tim had a real strong bond with their home County and enjoyed many holidays down through the years in Tralee and West Kerry.
Sympathy is extended to all of Joan's family. May she Rest In Peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.

Noel Cummins RIP- -The whole area was left stunned and saddened by the recent death of one of Castlegregory's finest sons, Noel Cummins.
A great all rounder-be it rowing, cycling, basketball, golf and Irish music.
Born with a gifted pair of hands be it electrical, plumbing, mechanical and bicycle repairs Noel was available to solve any problem big or small and always with a smile the remuneration was always nil. But it was in the field of photography he really excelled. He has captured virtually every event and the beauty of our area and he leaves a huge legacy to the upcoming generations.
A great community man, he was a member of our Trí na Chéile group-he travelled on all of our outings with his camera and donated some lovely photographs to every member. He loved the banter and jokes-it was great to see him laugh.
Shocked and saddened by his sudden departure-you will be sorely missed and we will never forget you. Mar ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís..... Slán abhaile.

In Two Minds
Do I have to choose
Between the best of both worlds? Between the lesser of two evils?
With any luck
Which can be in short supply
It’ll get too late
I’ll miss the train
I’ll dodge the blame
I could blame fate
I could blame someone else
But in the end
My decision Is indecision

Noel Griffin's House on Main Street will really transform their respective streets as well as other minor improvements in most other streets and lanes.

The early morning Parade by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band commences from Ashmount Terrace at 6a.m. through the traditional route stopping for Mass in St. Mary's Church before marching back to Ashmount again.
The Floats Parade commences at 12.30 p.m. from Ashmount again ably led by the Fife and Drum Band taking in the main streets in town.
The organisers welcome all Business Outlets, Services, Schools, Clubs and Societies, Individuals or Groups of any kind to take part but please notify us in advance for administrative purposes at 086-8641340.
The Danno O'Keeffe Memorial Plaque, which is held by Scoil An Ghleanna Ballyhea, will be presented to the best entry in the Parade again this year.
TIDY TOWNS. Some bags of Domestic Litter are appearing at various locations around town particularly over the past few months. We appeal to our readers to report such bad behaviour to the local Council Office with the names, descriptions or vehicle details if possible so that the practice can be stopped and our neat and tidy environment protected.
We also appeal to our readers to advise those tempted to pick the daffodils in public areas to refrain from doing so as they were planted for the benefit of all to enjoy during their short few weeks in full bloom.
Tidy Towns Work Evenings will recommence immediately after Easter which is only a few weeks away now.

Celebration Dinner and Medal Presentation Night - Summary
A thoroughly enjoyable night was had by club members on Saturday at the Ballygarry Estate, Hotel and Spa, Tralee as Milltown/Castlemaine GAA held a Celebration and Medal Presentation social gathering to recognise a very successful year for the club during the 2023 season.
All in attendance were given a first class hospitality experience by the team at the Ballygarry with a stunning sit down meal followed by presentations and music to keep the party going well into the early hours! We are very grateful to the hotel staff for all the support provided in the lead up to the occasion and for providing us with an ideal venue to host such a large number of club members. The level of service was second to none all night and is a credit all involved in the hotel.
MC Willie Murphy ensured proceedings ran seamlessly all through and as always we are most appreciative for his time and assistance. Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior team and management who were crowned County Intermediate Club Football Champions in November 2023 were paraded into a packed hall at the outset, led out by Linus Og Burke and Paud Hogan bearing the club flag and by the ever impressive Piper Gerard Baynham. Club Chairperson, John Foley, then gave an opening address to the attendees welcoming everyone to the Ballygarry for the event including a number of special guests such as Patrick O'Sullivan (Co Board Chairperson), Liam Lynch (Co Board Vice Chairperson), Peter Twiss (Co Board Secretary) and Jack O'Connor (Kerry
Senior Football Manager). John also spoke of the sterling work being done by all members of the club committee, often unseen in its nature but absolutely integral to the success of Milltown/Castlemaine GAA on and off the pitch. A particular mention was given to Club Secretary Susan Sheehan and Club Treasurer Ann Hogan for the trojan work put into organising the Celebration and Medal Presentation Night at the Ballygarry. He outlined the progress that has been made to date and is there to be seen by all with the redevelopment of the Paddy Burke Memorial Park over recent years and the further plans to continue this great work in the time ahead with more upgrade works in the pipelines. Finally, John offered a huge word of gratitude and appreciation to all the coaches, volunteers and players who give of their time to represent the Milltown/Castlemaine club in a wide variety of capacities and to all our members and sponsors for the unwavering support no matter the cause, it is heartening to see and makes such a difference to the continued growth and development of our club.
Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior squad and management were presented with their winning medals from the County Intermediate Club Football Championship by Patrick O'Sullivan (Co Board Chairperson) and following a few words from manager Mark Bourke (selectors Owen Flynn and Brendan Twiss also present), Player of the Year was awarded to Eanna O'Connor and Young Player of the Year was Brendan Casey.
Milltown/Castlemaine's Junior squad and management were presented with their winning medals from the McElligott Shield Final victory a few months ago by Liam Lynch (Co Board Vice Chairperson) and following a speech from joint manager Henry Scanlon (Colin McKenna also present), Player of the Year was awarded to Shane O'Connor.
Milltown/Castlemaine's Mid Kerry Minor Championship winning side were presented with their medals by Peter Twiss (Co Board Secretary) and following a speech from manager Garry Murphy (Mike Burke, Cathal Moriarty, Austin Cirillo, Linus Og Burke and Sean Hogan also part of the management), Player of the Year went to Gearoid Quirke.
MC Willie Murphy poignantly took a moment on the night to recall a number of club and community members who sadly passed away during 2023 including Jim Daly RIP, Jimmy Herlihy RIP, Jimmy Boyle RIP and Tom Griffin RIP. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
Co Board Chairperson, Patrick O'Sullivan also spoke on behalf of Kerry GAA and in doing so congratulated the club and all its teams for their successes during the 2023 season and wished them all the very best for the coming year.
With all the formalities completed, the shackles were off! The Bansha Boys played us into the early hours with a range of music which seen the dancefloor buzzing and when it was time to depart, Francis Flynn Bus Services ensured people got home safe and sound thanks to a return service to and from the venue. Thank you to the drivers.

Sweet Potato and Lentil Coconut Curry
Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School
The Dingle Bookshop
Few dishes express warmth and wholesomeness quite like Sweet Potato and Lentil Coconut Curry.
This curry highlights simplicity and depth in equal measure. The sweet potatoes, with their natural sweetness, offer a hearty foundation, while the lentils contribute a robust, nutty undertone that elevates each bite. But what truly sets this dish apart is the creamy coconut milk that blends it all together.
Whether enjoyed atop a bed of fluffy rice or scooped up with warm naan, this Sweet Potato and Lentil Coconut Curry is comfort cooking at its best.
Ingredients
dash of oil
1 onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and diced
1 tsp. chilli flakes
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. turmeric
½ tsp. ground black pepper
4-5 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
200g red lentils
1 tin of coconut milk
500ml of vegetable or chicken stock
200g spinach, washed
1 lime
fish sauce or salt
handful of coriander, chopped
Method
Put a pan on over a medium heat, add a drop of oil and add the onion. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and ginger, cook this for a few minutes. Stir in the spices. Add the sweet potato, lentils, coconut milk and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and let this simmer for about 30 minutes or until both the sweet potato and the lentils are cooked. Stir occasionally to prevent anything from sticking. Once all is cooked add the spinach. This will only need to be cooked for 2-3 minutes. Season with some lime juice and a little fish sauce (use a pinch of salt if you want to keep this vegetarian). Add some chopped coriander to serve.

It’s All In The Mind: Spring Forward
Orla Smyth
We welcomed the beginning of the Celtic Spring celebrating Imbolc or Lá Fhéile Bríde on the first of February. The official start date, according to the meteorological calendar is March 1st and the astronomical Spring kicks off on March 20th as determined by the vernal equinox. Take your pick, it really doesn’t matter: all you have to do is step outside, pause and trust your senses.
You can detect that unquestionable, undefinable shift in the air, heralding the change of season. Indulge in the olfactory delight of the hard to describe yet unmistakable smell that comes from a combination of surprising sources : mainly the pungent, earthy geosmin to which humans are highly sensitised ( it is a substance produced by soil bacteria and dissolved within raindrops or released in aerosol form} : the phenol compounds emitted as trees revive and their sap and tannins start to reactivate : the mineralization of organic matter as the temperatures slowly begin to rise. There's a lot going on!
Nature is stirring and already getting busy, preparing for fresh growth, rebirth and renewal. Listen to the tentative return of the birds’ early morning chatter: feast your eyes on the joyful first appearance of the daffodils and snowdrops or the bare, dry tree branches that never fail to surprise as they produce fragile new buds and shoots. All around us are the signs that we are leaving behind the deep restorative energy of winter and moving towards the fresh exuberance of spring.
The inward, cocooning call of winter is replaced by the dynamic, outward looking energy of spring. The season invites us to wake up and blossom : like the plant and animal life around us, we are a part of the cyclical nature of life. Our hormones also follow a seasonal pattern. We’ve all noticed the stretch in the evenings and apart from allowing us to enjoy more time outdoors, the longer daylight hours affect our energy levels and mood -: the body produces less melatonin and more serotonin in response to more sunlight which means we have more energy and need less sleep.
Now is the time to align our intentions with the natural rhythm of nature -this is the perfect time to try something new; any failed new year resolutions might be picked up and carried forward more effortlessly. The timing is right to cultivate new healthy habits and boost our physical, emotional and mental health.
At this time of year we are more inclined to open to new possibilities, to realise the infinite potential of being alive as we feel our innate vibrancy and vitality pick up pace. We don’t have to strive or push ourselves too hard: just listen to the body and follow its lead - it feels good to stretch and move and be curious.
Attuning to our natural rhythms doesn’t mean that we feel the need to make great changes or make radical lifestyle choices. But, it can remind us to celebrate who we are, embracing ourselves just as we are- no need to become something different. Start the new season with an acknowledgement of all that is right about us, pausing to notice exactly
how we are right now, not how we were yesterday or last year or all our lives,: not how we’ ll be tomorrow or next year or some time in the future when everything is going our way- what is ok with us now?
By slowing down and paying attention to the wonder of being present and alive right now in this moment, we can shift from harsh judgement and dissatisfaction to kindness and self caring, Instead of listening to our inner critic and focusing on all the things that are wrong, that we don’t want or like about ourselves or our lives we begin to let go of outdated ways of thinking and behaving and open to the freshness of new habits or a new way of relating to our experience.
We can try new things , singing in the shower, smiling at strangers, walking on the beach, eating a piece of fruit, dancing in the kitchen. There is no limit to what you might choose - but take the time to notice how it makes you feel and let your natural instinct take care of the rest

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Faoi dheireadh tá an séasúr nua chugainn, agus flosc ar dhaoine chuige, ní nach ionadh is dócha agus an oiread feabhais a léirigh na Ciarraigh i gComortas Chorn na Mumhan, a d'fheidhmigh mar chluichí réamhshéasúr.
Ba dheacair roimh-ré a shamhlú go n-éireodh le club chomh hóg le muintir Chnocán an Iolair foireann ar nós Fhánaithe Chóbh a chur dá mbonnaí i gcomórtas a bhí buaite acu le dhá bhliain anuas – ach b'shin díreach a rinne lucht na Ríochta ar an Luan Saoire Bainc.
Ag an bpointe sin, bhí imreoirí nua á bhfogairt ag an gclub gach cúpla lá, shamhlófá, agus maith mar a tharla bhí Victor Udeze ullamh le dul chun páirce gan an conradh sínithe aige ach an oíche roimh ré!
Cúl báire nua, Antonio Tuta, a chuaigh idir na cuaillí, agus Andy Spain a bhí ag feidhmiú mar chaptaen: níor fógraíodh go dtí an deireadh seachtaine seo caite gurb é a bheidh ina chaptaen i gcaitheamh an tséasúir.
Ag Tuta a bhí an chéad imirt chinniúnach don fhoireann baile, nuair a shábháil sé saor-chic de chuid Liam Kervick, ach tháinig an sos gan aon scór. Bhí an chosúlacht ar na cosantoirí go rabhadar ar a gcompord. Bhronn an réiteoir cic éirice ar Chiarraí laistigh de chúig nóiméad tar éis an bhriseadh nuair a tarraingíodh Udeze chun talaimh. Daniel Okwute a chuaigh chuige, ach d'éirigh le Darragh Burke, cúl báire Chóbh, é stopadh. Ba dheacair ag an bpointe sin gan a fhiafraí díot féin, arbh é sin an sciorta den ádh a bhí le teacht chugainn, agus é caillte againn?
Ach níorbh ea. Níos lú ná fiche nóiméad ón deireadh, chuir Nathan Gleeson agus Ronan Teahan gluaiseacht deas le chéile a tháinig chun críche le Okwute agus é amuigh ar an gcliathán ar dheis. Fuair sé siúd radharc ar Udeze istigh uaidh, agus ba ghearr an mhaise ar an bhfear nua an chaid a sheoladh chun an eangaigh. Jab deanta, agus iontas ar a lán. Nuair a chonac toradh an tarrach ar chranna do na cluichí leathchraoibhe, agus iad lena n-imirt ar Luan na Féile Pádraig, bhraitheas gur dhócha gur ar an lá san a roghnódh lucht Chiarraí foireann Treaty United a bheith chucu, ach beidh siad i dTrá Lí faoi dhó san aon deireadh seachtaine, cluiche sraithe ar an Aoine 1 Márta agus sa Chorn an Luan dar gcionn. Idir an dá linn, beidh muintir Chnocan an Iolair i mbun cluichí sraithe, i gCorcaigh mar thús, cluiche deacair a dhóthain i gCros an Tornóra an deireadh seachtaine seo, agus ag fáiltiú roimh Fhánaithe Bhré an Aoine ina dhiaidh sin.
Ní bheidh an séasúr úr seo aon phioc níos éasca ná an séasúr seo caite – ach tá taithí bliana ag na hógánaigh áitiúla anois, agus cúpla duine níos sinsearaí tugtha isteach chun cabhrú leo. Go n-éirí leo.

Beidh teacht le chéile againn ar an lá chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an dtógra seo a thóg tamall le críochnú.
Beidh níos mó eolas againn ar na méain i gceann cúpla seachtain. We are delighted to announce that we will be hanging artwork on the wall at Bóthar na bPiarsach. News from Dingle Hub
Mol Teic (t/a Dingle Hub) has provided workspace services for Corca Dhuibhne since 2017 with the support of several different exchequer schemes. Regrettably, the cessation of these supports means that Mol Teic can no longer offer workspace services effective from 31st March 2024.
However, Corca Dhuibhne now possesses a thriving workspace community and it is important to safeguard and preserve this. Údarás na Gaeltachta, through gteic@corca dhuibhne, also provide workspace services and Dingle Hub, who have managed this service since August 2022, will support clients who wish to transition to this space. The gteic@corca dhuibhne space currently comprises 16 hot desks. At this point, streamlining service provision is a sensible decision and Dingle Hub will support Údarás na Gaeltachta to explore development options for gteic@corca dhuibhne.
Dingle Hub will now focus on our vibrant portfolio of projects which are designed to build on, and amplify, the impacts achieved to date. These projects aim to address climate change and biodiversity loss at a local level and provide the pathways necessary to transition to a low-carbon community and to build a sustainable future. They include:
• Creative Coastal Resilience aims to work with an embedded artist to co-develop adaptation strategies and solutions to mitigate against coastal erosion and impact of climate change and foster ownership and commitment among Maharees stakeholders that could be replicated in other coastal communities.
• Two Sustainable Energy Communities representing the agriculture and tourism and hospitality sectors are making strides to drive energy transition across the Peninsula. Currently, 750kW of Solar PV is in the process of being installed in local businesses. This will result in 650,815 kWh of renewable electricity each year, offsetting 224,532 kg of CO2e and is the equivalent to planting 22,453 trees each year the PV panels are operating. Strong partnerships with Fáilte Ireland, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Kerry Co Co are enabling acceleration of this work.
• Dingle Hub’s work on energy resilience for our future is supported by two new EU Horizon projects: Enpower and Crete Valley which will run until 2026 and 2028 respectively.
• We are teaming up with researchers from MaREI and Cork University Business School to explore pathways to develop biogas through the SEAI funded CABBBIE project which will run until 2027.
• The Dingle Peninsula Sustainable Mobility Pathfinder project will run until the end of 2025 and seeks to identify and develop viable alternative modes of travel to reduce high levels of private car dependency currently inherent in rural areas.
Tá Mol Teic (t/a Dingle Hub) ag soláthar seirbhísí spáis oibre do Chorca Dhuibhne ó 2017 i leith le tacaíocht ó roinnt scéimeanna éagsúla de chuid an státchiste. Ar an drochuair, de bharr deireadh a bheith curtha leis an dtacaíocht seo ní bheidh sé de chumas ag Mol Teic seirbhísí spáis oibre a thairiscint a thuilleadh ó 31ú Márta 2024 ar aghaidh.
Anois, áfach, tá pobal rathúil spáis oibre ag Corca Dhuibhne agus tá sé tábhachtach go ndéanfar cosaint agus caomhnú air seo. Trí gteic@ corcadhuibhne, cuireann Údarás na Gaeltachta seirbhísí spáis oibre ar fáil chomh maith agus cuirfidh Dingle Hub, atá ag déanamh bainistíocht ar an tseirbhís seo ó Lúnasa 2022, tacaíocht ar fáil do chliaint go mba mhaith leo aistriú go dtí an spás seo. Faoi láthair, tá 16 deasc sealaíochta i spás gteic@corcadhuibhne. Ag an bpointe seo is cinneadh ciallmhar é cuíchóiriú a dhéanamh ar sholáthar seirbhísí agus beidh Dingle Hub ag tacú le hÚdarás na Gaeltachta chun fiosrú a dhéanamh timpeall ar na roghanna forbartha atá ann do gteic@corcadhuibhne.
As seo amach beidh Dingle Hub dírithe ar ár réimse bríomhar de thionscadail atá deartha chun tógáil, agus méadú a dhéanamh, ar an méid atá bainte amach go dtí seo. Tá sé de chuspóir ag na tionscadail seo dul i ngleic leis an athrú aeráide agus meath bithéagsúlachta ag an leibhéal áitiúil, agus na bealaí riachtanacha a aimsiú chun aistriú a dhéanamh go pobal ar charbón íseal chun gur féidir todhchaí inbhuanaithe a thógáil. Ina measc tá:
• Teacht Aniar Cruthaitheach Cóstaí Tá sé d'aidhm ag an tionscadal seo oibriú le healaíontóir neadaithe chun comhfhorbairt a dhéanamh ar straitéisí agus réitigh oiriúnaithe mar shlí chun maolú ar chreimeadh cósta agus tionchar diúltach athrú aeráide, anuas ar úinéireacht agus dionbháilteacht a chothú i measc páirtithe leasmhara sna Machairí a d'fhéadfadh pobail eile cois cósta aithris a dhéanamh orthu.
• Dhá Phobal Fuinnimh Inbhuanaithe ionadaíoch ar an bpobal feirmeoireachta agus an pobal turasóireachta agus fáilteachais faoi seach. Tá an dá PFI seo ag déanamh dul chun cinn iontach chun aistriú fuinnimh a thiomáint ar fud na leithinse. Faoi láthair, táthar i mbun 750kW de chumhacht painéal fótavoltach a shuiteáil i ngnólachtaí áitiúla. Mar thoradh air seo beidh 650,815kW d'fhuinneamh inathnuaite á ghinúint gach bliain, ag cúiteamh 224,532 kg de CO2e agus is ionann sin agus 22,453 crann a chur gach bliain go mbeidh na painéal fotavoltacha ag feidhmiú. Ciallaíonn comhpháirtíochtaí láidre le Fáilte Ireland, Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Comhairle Contae Chiarraí go bhfuil breis luas á chur faoin obair seo.
• Tá obair Dingle Hub ar acmhainneacht fuinnimh ag fáil tacaíocht ó dhá thionscadal nua de chuid clár Horizon leis an Aontas Eorpach: Enpower agus Crete Valley, a bheidh ag rith go dtí 2026 agus 2028 faoi seach.
• Táimid ag obair le taighdeoirí ó MaREI agus an Scoil Ghnó ag Coláiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh chun fiosrú a dhéanamh ar shlite chun forbairt a dhéanamh ar bhithghás trí thionscadal CABBIE de chuid Áisíneacht Fuinnimh Inmharthana na hÉireann, a bheidh ag rith go dtí 2027.
• Beidh Tionscadal Ceannródaíoch Soghluaisteachta Inbhuanaithe Chorca Dhuibhne ag rith go dtí deireadh 2025 ag féachaint chun modhanna iompair inmharthana malartacha a aithint agus a fhorbairt mar bhealach laghdú a dhéanamh ar na leibhéil ard spleáchais reatha ar chairr phríobháideacha i gceantracha tuaithe.

Duais le Buachaint: Dearbhán ón gCafé Liteartha Pádraig Joe Ó Dálaigh, Dún Chaoin
Deoraíocht
úrscéal ar an aimsir seo atá i láthair le Pádraic Ó Conaire
foilsithe ag Coiscéim
‘Tá úrscéal seo Phádraic Uí Chonaire ag cur áthas agus iontas ar léitheoirí ó foilsíodh i 1910 é. ‘Tá intleacht ann, tá fealsúnacht ann,’ a chreid moltóir an Oireachtais a bhronn mórdhuais air. Dar leis an gcéad léirmheas ‘go bhfaightear solasbhriathra is teas aigne ann - agus ábhar machnaimh.’ ‘Tá Deoraíocht lán de scríbhneoireacht mhaith neartmhar, ón gcéad duilleog go dtí an duilleog dheireanach’ a scríobh Seosamh Mac Grianna: ‘Tá an scéal dearg te óna thús go dtí a dheireadh.’
Ó d’imigh sé as cló sna 1920idí, áfach, ní raibh an leabhar iomlán ar fáil do léitheoirí. Cuireadh eagrán amach tar éis bhás Uí Chonaire agus cinsireacht déanta air. Cheil sé seo collaíocht na mban sa scéal de réir phiúratánachas na linne. Tá an chinsireacht chéanna déanta ar gach eagrán eile a tháinig amach ó shin, agus ar aistriúcháin den leabhar. Den chéad uair le céad bliain, tá Deoraíocht ar fáil gan cháim gan chinsireacht san eagrán nua seo.
Tá scrúdú géar ar stair an leabhair déanta ag an eagarthóir ina réamhrá. Cuirtear síos ar athrú a theidil, tionchar scríbhneoirí eile air, agus macallaí as saol an údair féin ann. Chomh maith le grinnléamh ar an scéal a scaoileann cuid mhaith dá rúndiamhra, pléitear léamha éagsúla air, agus na ceisteanna a thagann chun solais ann. Ar deireadh thiar thall, seo againn Deoraíocht Uí Chonaire ina iomláine arís.’ - Coiscéim

Ó Mhárthain
Breandán Mac Gearailt
Cé déarfadh é, ach deirtear linn go mbí an bhliain seo caite an bhliain ba theo riamh!
M’fheadar seans gur ó tosnaíodh ag breacadh tréithe na haimsire a bhí i gceist. Ní raibh aon tomhas ann i gcás na haimsire ar feadh na mílte blian. Dúirt fear eile go mbáthfadh an fharraige sinn. Conas ná fuil an Ollóin báite? Bheadh ach tá cosaint le deáramh acu ón bhfarraige le cuimhne na ndaoine – cé is dócha go bhfuil tuairisc dhearfa i mball éigin. Ní tháinig na fallaí cosanta ann uatha féin.
Caid agus Iománaíocht
Cé gur bhuaidh an Clár ar Chorcaigh sa tSreath Chomórtas iomána is le mí-ádh a chaill Corcaigh ar an Satharn seo caite. Chailleadar le poinnte in aghaidh Chill Chainnigh. Mheasas go gcuaidh scata ina gcoinne sa chéad leath, mar a raibh rith an ráis le Cill Chainnigh, ach bhí cúrsaí cothrom go leor sa dara leath. Deineadh feall amach is amach sa chearnóig ar Chorcaíoch sa chéad leath agus ba choir poc éirice a bheith ann, ach ní raibh. Sin mar a conacsa é, ach d’fheadfadh dearmad a bheith orm, ach seasaim lem thuaiirim pioca ceart nó mí-cheart. An- chluiche ach bhí Corcaigh tofa sa dara leath.Tá ard imreoirí acu.
Toradh Cill Choinnigh 0- 21 vs 1-17 Corcaigh.
Sa chaid bhuaidh Ciarraí ar Mhuíneachain a bhí ag cuir clipí amach. Tá siad go maith ach nuair a tháinigh na Clúmhánaigh ó Fhossa isteach, b’shin deire le aon tseans ag Muíneacháin cé gur maith iad. Duine go bhfuil an- cheol ann, ná Barra-Dan Ó Súilleabháin. Fuair Tomás Ó Shúilleabháin a imríonn ar chlé sna cosainteoirí dhá phoinnte. Is beag cluiche ná faigheann sé poinnte. Tá imreoirí eile á gcroicheadh féin go fuadrach.
Ar an nDomhnach seo caite bhí an- chluiche iomána ann idir Ghaillimh agus Tiobrad Árann. Bhí na hÁrannaigh chun cinn le seacht phoinnte luath sa dara leath ach d’fheabhsaigh Gaillimh go mór ach fuair na Tiobradaigh poc pionóis ag tarrac ar dheire. Bhí port na Gaillimhe seinnte.
Toradh Tiobrad Arann 1-26 vs Gaillimh 0-24
Sa chluiche idir Loch Garman agus Uí Fháilge, bhíodar ar chó-scór, 0-20 vs 1- 17. Cuireadh beirt dos na Carmanaigh don ngort.
Bhuaidh Bleá Cliath ar Aondroim, 1 – 20 vs 1-19. Ar ámharaí an tsaoil fuair Bleá Cliath báide i ndeire an chluiche.
Bhuaidh Luimneach ar an Iar Mhí., 1 -20 vs 0- I7. Seisear don ngnáth fhoireann a bhí ag Luimneach.
Bhí ard chluiche idir an Clár agus Port Láirge. An dara bua agus ceann na mbuaiteóirí fé láthair ag an gClár.
Toradh An Clár 0- 20 vs 1-16 ag Port Láirge.
Caid
Bhuaidh Mean Scoil Cnoc an tSeabhaic, Trá Lí ar Scoil na mBráthar Críostaí, Thrá Lí i gCraobh Chluiche Chorn Uí Mhuirí na Mumhan ar Scoil an deire seachtaine seo caite.
Bhuaidh foireann caide Chaislean an Ghriaighre ar an nGaeltacht go bog i bpáirc caide Ghallarais Dé Domhnaigh seo cait +e 4-12 vs 0-12, is dóigh liom. Chuala más fíor go raibh scata imreoirí óga ag imirt ag an nGaeltacht! Earrach ceolmhar
Anois teacht an Earraigh tá claochló breá ar an saol. Is abhar sóláis Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh a bheidh ar na bacáin an deire seachtaine seo. Bí ag caint ar cheol agus cuideachta. Siad Breandán ó Beaglaoi agus Niamh Ní Bhaoill a eagraíonn an fhéile agus táimíd go léir buíoch dóibh. Is deacair ceol binn milis a shárú, gúimíd gach ádh ortha.
Poilitíocht
D’fhéadfadh greadadh bheith i gCorca Dhuibhne i gcás toghachán an Chomhairle Contae. Is dócha go mbeidh seisear/seachtar iomathóirí a bheith sa tógha-cheanntar, cúigear i gceanntar an Daingin seans leis
gur ceathrar a bheidh i gCorca Dhuibhne agus beirt sa mhór leath eile. Is maith an scéalaí an aimsir.
Ansan, béidh toghchán Eorpach agus gach seans Olltoghachán. Bainfear sásamh as.
Ní raibh aon toghachán riamh ná raibh cúlchaint, tromaíocht agus sár gheallúintí sa tsiúl, agus iad á gcreidiúint.
Naomh Gobnait
Is gnáthach go dtugtar omós agus onóir do Naomh Gobnait gach bliain i nDún Chaoin. Bhí abhar gan cháim ann imbliana ón naoú lá dtí an t-aonú lá déag.
In Ionad an Bhlascaoid bhí Tráth na gCeist Boird ar an Aoine. Bhuaidh Seán agus Frances Uí Cinnéide, Máire Uí Shíthigh agus Pádraig Ó Scanláin. Crua cheisteanna a Bhuachaill.
Ar an Satharn dfhreastal slua mór ar oiche seiteanna i dtigh Khrugair mar a mbog cuid dos na rinceoirí chun allais agus sóláis.
Deineadh Turas Ghobnatan Dé Domhnaigh roimh an Aifrinn, Lá Fhéile Ghobnait go raibh slua ollmhór ag an Aifreann agus cuimhniú ar Mháiréad Ní Cheárna agus ar Fheargal Mac Amhlaoidh a fuair bás le déanaí.Trocaire ortha.
Ina dhiaidh sin bhí taispeaintaisí stáitse in Ionad an Bhlascaoid ag leanaí ó Scóil Dhún Chaoin. Bhíodar go léir go diail.
B’é an clabhsúr ná blaiseadh bidh blasta in Ionad an Bhlascaoid.
Tá Gobnait Naofa sásta.
