Ironing out a Few Fascinating Facts about the Celtic Curse!

For a while there has been a raging debate in genetics as to whether Hereditary Haemochromastosis is a Celtic thing or was it introduced to the Celts by Viking invaders and other colonizers. Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disease that alters the body's ability to regulate iron absorption, resulting in excessive iron building up in cells overtime. What we do know is that the genetic variant (a glitch in our genetic coding) responsible for HH, just identified in 1996 as C282Y, only occurred after our ancestors migrated from Central Africa to Northern and Central Europe. Up until then, there is no evidence that HH was in our genes. We also know that countries with the highest prevalence for HH around the North Sea and Western Europe, lie in the path of the oncemarauding Vikings, which suggest that the Viking travel had something to do with introducing the defective gene into populations. However, the timeline does not fully explain how the gene mutation is present in Celtic Irish ancestral remains from Rathlin Island dating back to 3000 years before the Vikings hit our shores. And so the debate goes on! The Irish have the highest frequency of C282Y mutation in the world, and more specifically in the male population of Connaught.

Although it is known as the “Celtic Curse”, the enhanced ability to store iron probably provided advantages at the time of our first migration to Europe. In particular, it would have helped us adapt to low-iron intakes in our new environment and ward off deficiencies. There is evidence that HH provided resistance to tuberculosis and typhoid infections, as these bacteria require free iron for growth and the way the body stores excess iron, makes it unavailable to these bacteria. The first diagnosis of Haemochromatosis was made during the 1800s through autopsies which showed accumulations of iron in the liver, pancreas, joints and skin. Early

physicians established that iron overloads accumulated over a period of 30 to 40 years so symptoms of HH were not seen until life expectancy improved. Our early ancestors would have died long before the effects of excessive iron were apparent.

Nowadays, blood analysis and genetic testing can identify the rogue gene responsible for HH. It is the most common genetic disease in Ireland with 1 out of every 83 people predisposed to HH, yet most people are only diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50 years when symptoms of iron overload become apparent. Women tend to be diagnosed later due to blood loss through menstruation and pregnancy. Symptoms include chronic pain, joint pain, loss of libido, diabetes, enlarged liver and irregular heartbeat. Iron deposits affect the liver, heart, pancreas, endocrine glands and joints leading to impaired function and eventually disease or organ failure. Treatment involves regular blood-letting (phlebotomy). Initially, treatment may be required weekly or bi-weekly but once safe iron levels are established, may only be needed a few times per year, with regular monitoring by your GP/healthcare providers.

Along with phlebotomy, it is a good idea to adopt a dietary protocol to manage Haemochromatosis and to protect organs from the free radical damage caused by excess iron levels. A wholefood, mainly plant-based diet full of colour, antioxidants and unprocessed foods will offer the best protection in the long run. Limit iron-rich foods in the diet, especially heme-iron found in animal meats and offal. Heme-iron is more bioavailable in the human body - it is easier to absorb than non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is a type of iron found mostly in plant foods. Non-heme iron is more difficult to absorb. Some vegetables considered high in iron (non-heme) such as spinach, chard, black beans and green lentils may be eaten in moderation as the phytates and fibre present in these foods inhibit iron absorption. Wholegrains too can be eaten for the same reason.

The increased fibre intake, from a plant-based diet can bind with excess iron for elimination and inhibit the absorption of iron from food. Other foods that inhibit iron absorption include tannins in black tea, calcium-rich foods and healthy fats. Seek advice about using psyllium husk, calcium and any other supplements to minimize iron absorption, as you may well be inhibiting the absorption of other minerals and vital nutrients. Limit or avoid alcohol as it increases the uptake of iron and also may contain iron. Alcohol is an added burden to the liver which is one of the organs most affected by iron-overload in HH.

Watch out for “fortified” and “enriched” cereals, breads, flour and other foods. Fortification is added to refined grain products – keep ingredients very natural and as whole as possible to avoid unnecessary addition of iron and vitamin C to everyday foods. Such as bread and cereals. Likewise, be wary of supplements which may contain iron and/or vitamin C. Vitamin C rich foods should not be eaten with meat dishes as it increases iron absorption. Yet, vitamin C is needed for many other functions and must not be completely avoided. Use iron-free cookware, ceramic is best but stainless steel is a handier option for most cooking.

While HH is still considered a curse, particularly to those who are affected, it is part of who we are and more than likely helped us survive through challenging times in our past. Modern treatment options along with the advances in genetics will make it less of a curse in the future. There is a good possibility that for generations to come, the Celtic-ness of Haemachromatosis will go from threat to trait much like the pale skin and freckles!

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

TOO MANY PUBS IN DINGLE

-Kerry Reporter 07 May, 1892

At a court in Dingle recently a Mr. John O’Connor of Main Street applied for a new public house licence. D. I. Langhorn of the Constabulary opposed as there were already enough public houses in Dingle, he stated.

Head Constable Rae said there were 41 public houses and the population of the town was 2040. There were 17 public houses on Main Street. His honour said there is a public house for every 50 persons. (Including children?).

Mr. Broderick, who appeared for Mr. O’Conner, said his client was a most respectable man and would be a good publican. His honour said the bench was unanimous in rejecting the application, not on the grounds of character, but because there were already a sufficient number of public houses in the town.

FATAL ACCIDENT

-Dublin Daily Nation, 15, July, 1897

An inquest was held on Tuesday in Killarney on the body of an old man named John McCarthy who was killed on Monday by being thrown from a donkey cart. The old man was partially paralysed and was kneeling in the cart when his donkey took fright at a passing bicycle.

The donkey dashed away throwing the old man out onto the road. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and exonerated the county district from all blame.

RELIEF FROM CHOLERA

-Kerry Evening Post, 18, July, 1832

The inhabitants of this town (Tralee), of all classes and persuasions, should acknowledge the never-failing mercy of the Almighty, for removing from among us that dire scourge – the Cholera.

That dreadful malady has totally disappeared here and we understand the cholera hospital is to be closed tomorrow.

Confidence is again perfectly restored and business, trade and industry has been restored. Our streets are again crowded and the country folk flock as before. Business goes on merrily at the bank, the stores and the shops. The bustle of useful employment has resumed and despondency has vanished. Tralee suffered but little in comparison with other places and smaller towns with fewer populations.

MARRIAGES IN THE WILD WEST

-The Graphic, 28, September, 1878

In the west of Ireland marriages generally turn out happily and the housewives have a busy time of it. They not only churn the butter, which is the main means of support, but they also spin the wool for their husbands’ coats and waistcoats and the coarse sheets for their bedding.

Every house has a spinning wheel and carder. (A carder was like a comb for untangling the wool). There used to be more than 300 weavers between Dingle and Ventry but a great many have emigrated and now there are only five or six remaining.

It seems a pity that people who are naturally inclined to industry should have no manufactories to employ their skills to the best advantage. However, factories are unknown in the Wild West and no one is enterprising enough to set them up. Signed, C. J. H. (Something very familiar about those initials!).

NIGHT LADY WHIPPED

Kerry Evening Post, 16, -December, 1835

A cyprian (prostitute) named Bridget Donoghue was, a few nights ago,

given in charge at the Police-office in Tralee by a Reverend Gentleman for drunkenness and causing a disturbance on the streets.

The unfortunate creature had evident marks of the clerical whip on her shoulders and some of her hair had been cut off. She was committed to gaol by the Provost for further examination.

On being brought up before the Magistrates at Petty Sessions her disorderly conduct could not be denied. She refused to quit the town until her cloak and other articles of property, of which she had been deprived before being carried to the Police-office, were restored to her.

She said she saw her ‘dandy ornamental comb’ stuck in the hair of another lady of the cyprian sisterhood in this town. She was finally discharged for want of prosecution.

QUERNS STONES AT WORK

- Kerry Evening Post, 21, October, 1846.

The pressure for barley in small quantities continued during the past week and kept the price of that grain above the exporting value. This demand was chiefly confined to parties in Corkaguiney who take home the kilndried grain and manufacture it into flour with their querns.

CHALLENGE: DINGLE V ANNASCAUL

-Kerryman, 20 July, 1912

Sir: - Please insert the following in your paper – We, the members of the Annascaul football team, are altogether dissatisfied with the result of last Sunday’s match with Dingle at Tralee.

We hereby challenge Dingle to another match on any grounds outside Dingle or Annascaul.

Signed P.P. Kennedy, Captain.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT NEAR CASTLEGREGORY

- Kerry Reporter, 04 August, 1906

A small farmer named Michael Deane, married and aged 34, of the townland Cloghanesheskeen, near Castlegregory, was removed by special train to Tralee on Wednesday and from there to the county infirmary.

He was the victim of a serious accident resulting in his foot being completely cut off from above the ankle by a mowing machine. Great sympathy is expressed for the unfortunate man.

Annascaul Parish Gathering

Parish Listening Evening: In his Pastoral Letter, Moving Forward in Hope”, Bishop Ray invites all parishioners to participate in a consultation process to shape the future of pastoral areas and parishes. The Consultation Gathering for our parish will be held in Annascaul Community Centre next Friday, 1st March at 7.30pm.

As preparation for this gathering, you are invited to reflect on the following questions:

1. Without the presence of a priest to lead and coordinate, what aspects of parish life could we, the laity, take responsibility for and organise ourselves?

2. Where do we see scope for cooperation with neighbouring parishes in our pastoral area?

Birthday Greetings

Happy birthday to the ‘woman of the house’ in The Railway Tavern. A big surprise awaited Anne when she arrived at the Bar on Friday night!

Family and friends and a live band were there to greet her and help her celebrate a lovely occasion on her birthday. Anne, Go maire tú an céad’, may you enjoy many more birthdays with family and friends.

Obituary

Michael O'Regan, late of Ballinteer, Dublin and originally of Annagh, Tralee passed away suddenly, on the 18th February. Michael was an esteemed political journalist, father and grandfather and a devoted Kerryman. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, loyal listeners and readers and the 40,000 Twitter followers which he valued and appreciated greatly. Michael is survived by Elizabeth, his daughters Deirdra and Alyson, sons-inlaw Jeff and Phil, grandchildren Luna and Levi, siblings Frank, Eilish, Gerard and Marie, sisters-in-law Una and Sheela and extended family. Sympathy is extended to all.

Michael O'Regan's wonderful analysis of politics, national and local on call from The Dail on Radio Kerry on Friday mornings was enjoyed by listeners all over the country and online too. Gerry O'Sullivan said it all on Friday last, after playing some wonderful excerpts from past programmes, Gerry concluded the piece with the words and we are out of time, the perfect end to a perfect era of broadcasting, a master of his trade, a born professional, that was Michael O'Regan. Rest In Peace.

Bernadette Hughes née Telford of Cappaclough East, Camp, Co. Kerry and formerly Glasnevin, Dublin, died peacefully on 21st February 2024, beloved wife of the

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

Set Dancing Classes: Set dancing classes every Thursday night in Halla le Chéile, Ballyguin.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

7.30.9.30pm, Contact Timmy Walsh 087 9744099. Come along and enjoy yourself while getting fit.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Maintenance/ground staff required (eligible for C.E. scheme) in Castlegregory. Please ring Joe Bric: 087 2682097

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Castlegregory Care of the Aged/Active Retired are looking for a part time employee. This is a part time Community employment position. For further details of the position, please contact Margaret Maunsell, 087 9076256.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism

Dia dhaoibh go léir agus tá súil againn go bhfuil ag éirí go maith libh. Hello to all and we hope you are keeping well

As we move into March Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne (CTCD)/Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) has noticed a marked increase in the number of enquiries coming through to the office as visitors are planning their holidays for this year, so please make sure that all of your contact details, opening hours, special offers are up to date.

One of the points that stood out from last year’s feedback was the subject of transport for visitors staying outside of town, where many found it, a challenge getting home later on in the evening. So, we really do need your help in advising all guests to book their taxis early.

Kerry Airport Announcement What great news about the weekly summer flights between Kerry and Brest, Caen and Pau in France with Chalair commencing on June 29th. Which will not only increase the numbers of visitors arriving from a neighboring EU country but also an opportunity for some of us to fly direct to France from Kerry. To book visit https://en.chalair.fr/destinations/ kerry.

Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism

As part of the Munster Technological University innovation and enterprise month, there will be an online coffee morning discussing sustainable and regenerative tourism asking “Can tourism really be Regenerative”? There will be guest speakers Dr Jim Butcher from the UK and Debbie Clarke from New Zealand tackling some of the big questions currently being asked about the future of tourism and the best path forward?

To get more information, links to this and more on sustainable and regenerative tourism can be found on our Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance websites home page: www.dingle-peninsula.ie

No Fashion Faux Pas For

Castlegregory Students

Fixing fast fashion is firmly on the minds of young West Kerry students who have made it to the semi-final of the Young Environmentalists Awards next month.

Eight Transition Year students from Mean Scoil Nua an Leith Triuigh (MSLT) in Castlegregory want to create awareness about this huge global issue. During their research they became concerned about the impact that cheap low quality clothing items - which go out of fashion within weeks due to fast changing trends - is having on the environment when worn just once and then binned.

Their idea is to take action by making the local community aware of the problem and encourage people to re-wear their clothing many times over as well as educate them on ways to take better care of them.

“We are a Young Environmentalists Award 2024 group called ‘Fixing Fashion’ who are aiming to make our local community aware of the fast fashion problem,” Katie Crean, who is a member of the group, said.

The group of students involved in the project includes Katie, as well as Emma Garvey, Ciara Ferriter, Ciara Butler, Reuben Wall, Daniel O’Mahony, Stephanie Reid and Charlie Gillan.

“We have been dedicating our time to the project over the last few months,” Katie added.

But how were they inspired?

“Last year the ‘Habitat Heroes’ and ‘Eco Empire’ groups from our school were very successful in the Young Environmentalists Awards.

“This year our group of eight had a common interest in fast fashion so we decided to do some research on it. We were shocked by how much waste there was worldwide and decided that we wanted to make people aware of this, both in our local and school communities.

“We were inspired and guided by our principal Karen Blennerhassett and our Agricultural Science teacher Ilona O’Dowd.”

From there the students stepped up their campaign by bringing it to an online audience to create a campaign about their project.

“We are posting very frequently on our Instagram and TikTok platforms, where we are raising awareness with informative but catchy posts about this world problem.

“In our school community we are getting the message across by putting posters up around the school halls, sending emails to parents, staff and

students, while also setting up monthly ‘Swap Shops’.

“Swap Shops were new to the school and have turned out to be a great success. We have collected unwanted clothes from students, staff and the public which we are selling for €2 each. This money will then be donated to St Vincent de Paul (SVP) at the end of our school year. Any clothes left over will be donated to local charity shops also. Along with these ‘Swap Shops’, we have showcased presentations for other classes and organised two guest speakers for our own Transition Year class which included Peadar O Fionnain and Diarmuid Griffin from the Green Party. Recently they came in to hear all about the multiple projects in the class including - ‘Solar Soldiers’, ‘Eco Empire Expanded’ and ‘Cop Castlegregory’.

“We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon!”

You can check them out on TikTok: @fixing.fashion or Instagram @ fixingfashionty for more information.

SAFE TALK. A free Suicide Alertness Training Session under the direction of qualified HSE employees will be held in the Dingle Sceilig Hotel on Wednesday March 13th commencing at 2.30 p.m.

Safe Talk Sessions prepare attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don't want to die and can be helped by timely recognition of the symptoms and intervention by relatives, neighbours, friends or workmates. Further details from Ann Marie Nic Gearailt in Údarás. Prior registration is required for the session which is most informative and one never knows when one may be of help to others in need.

TIDY TOWNS. We got a very pleasant surprise last week when a cheque in the amount of €1500 arrived in the post, a totally unexpected donation to our funds compliments of the Dingle Marathon Organisers. We wish to publicly acknowledge this generous donation which is in return for the help of a number of our volunteers with stewarding and commentary duties during the 2023 Marathon last September. In fact the marathon organisers have been donating different amounts to our funds over the past 10 years the proceeds of which are used in our efforts to present our town and area looking its best all year round. Míle Buíochas Ken, Bríd and Tadhg.

OUTWEST. Congratulations to the team at the OUTWEST outlet in Green Street who were recently acknowledged as a Certified B Corp.

B Corp recognises companies that use business as a force for good by meeting high ethical and environmental standards and positively impacting workers, communities, customers and the planet. There are now 30 other certified B Corporations in Ireland across a variety of industries. Comhgairdeachas libh go léir.

IASC DE BRÚN TEO. Well done to John and Ted Browne proprietors of Iasc De Brún Teo whose fertiliser product devised mainly from the remains of crab claws featured prominently in a recent National TV programme. After years of experimenting with the idea the final product has now been verified by qualified experts as one of the most valuable in its line on the market especially using raw materials heretofore regarded as waste and for disposal in landfill only.

Dingle Tidy Towns can verify this result as Iasc De Brún have been generous donors of the product for many years with excellent results in all our flower and shrub tubs and beds.

OTHER VOICES. A new series of the Other Voices programme is due to commence on RTE 2 and RTE Player on this Thursday February 29th at 11.05p.m. The Other Voices team have certainly contributed to promoting West Kerry as one of the best cultural and music destinations not alone in Ireland but much further afield as well. The TV programme gives the opportunity to all those who did not attend the annual weekend in Dingle to view what they missed and also whet the appetite for the 2024 festival. I must say I always enjoy the different music and behind the scenes chats which present the artists in a personable manner which does not always happen on such productions.

PARADES. A reminder to all business outlets, clubs, music groups or individuals who intend to take part in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Dingle to book their floats and drivers in good time as preparations will be building up over the next few weeks.

Members of the Southampton Fire Brigade from New York who will be in the area for a wedding on that weekend have expressed an interest in taking part and will be an added bonus to the festivities also. We don't know yet whether they will be up in time or going to bed before the 6a.m. morning parade hits the streets at dawn!.

Message from Fr Michael

Last weekend some of the Children who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation later this year took the Pledge to abstain from drink for a number of years and from drugs for life. It was good to see a group of young people stand and give witness. They took the pledge after discussing with their families. I encourage the discussion to continue right throughout the teenage years. It is good to keep in mind that it is often not strangers that will offer the first drink or drugs but friends or friends of friends.

In response to Bishop Rays’ pastoral letter, a listening process continues throughout the Diocese. The people of Annascaul are invited to a gathering in Annascaul Community Centre at 7.30pm on Friday evening next, March 1st. All welcome.

Trócaire boxes have been distributed to homes and are also available at the back of the churches. You are encouraged to put it in a prominent place and to put a contribution to the poor into it if in a position to do so. It is important to read the literature that comes with the Trócaire Box as Trócaire has the dual mandate of collecting money for the poor as well as educating us on the causes of poverty.

We celebrate the season of lent. We hear in our readings at Mass about Jesus going into the Desert and being tempted. We know that the temptations were real for Jesus and continued throughout his ministry.

Temptation is a word that is seldom on our lips these days. Spoken if at all when presented with a dessert menu after a meal. We know it would be tasty but know that it might not be always the right option. The word temptation has gone from our everyday vocabulary.

Lent can be a time when we think about what ways we might be tempted. It could be any of the following ways bearing in mind for each of us there are many other examples we could add to the list.

Tempted to go it alone without God - to forget prayer.

Tempted to give out to God for what is bad in life and forget to thank him for what is good.

Tempted to think that the world revolved around ourselves.

Tempted to forget that others might be in greater need.

Tempted to leave others to do the things that I can.

Tempted to think that we can turn our lives around with little effort on our parts.

Tempted to exploit the world as though there was no tomorrow.

Tempted to close our ears to people who we do not agree with.

Lent time when we are encouraged to live with less. Jesus went into the desert and while there, through prayer and fasting he grew closer to God and got a clear sense of his mission. When we take on changes and sacrifices as something that can transform us rather than just something to be endured and bring this to God in prayer we realise that it can and will change our lives.

The season of Lent is about Prayer Fast and Almsgiving. A time to reflect on our relationship with God, ourselves and others. Over the next weeks we pray that we will spend times recognising the temptations in our lives, asking God for the strength to resist them and preparing to celebrate Easter with hearts and minds made new.

Tempted to close our eyes to the suffering of others.

Buíochas

Ba mhaith le Cumann Naomh Uinseann de Pól buíochas a chur in iúil dóibh siúd ar fad a thug go fial do bhailliúchán na Nollag. Is mór againn bhur gcuid cabhrach.

County Council appeal to Minister Ryan on Sun Glare

On Monday of last week Councillors Séamus Cosaí MacGearailt and Breandán Fitzgerald tabled a Motion at a meeting of Kerry County Council, in relation to sun glare, which was passed.

The Council is now requesting the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, to encourage the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to produce a road safety campaign, for radio and television, warning motorists on the danger of sun glare and how to deal with it.

In tandem with that, and over the past 10 days, hundreds of car stickers, warning the public of such danger, have been distributed among the pupils at 18 Primary Schools on the peninsula, from Dún Chaoin to Castlemaine and from An Clochán to Derryquay.

The students in these schools were asked to take the stickers home to Mom and Dad and to put them on a corner of the car’s back window - on the outside.

Eight of the schools, where classes are in the Irish Language, received stickers with a warning in Irish;- ‘ BÍ AIREACH AR DHALLADH GREINE’.

Dúchas an Daingin, which promotes the Irish Language Plan for Dingle town, funded the cost of printing 300 Irish Language stickers.

The other ten schools had ‘BEWARE OF SUN GLARE’ printed on them.

All of the stickers were produced by Dingle Printing (Formerly Image and Design) off John Street who printed a further 1,000+ stickers at no charge because the printer, Edwin de Groot, supports the concept and the strategy.

Last Friday night video journalist Seán mac a’tSíthigh of RTE/TG4 interviewed local man Ted Creedon on Nuacht TG4 about the catalyst behind the story. Ted spoke about his wife and sister-in-law being seriously injured in a road traffic accident in January 2023 which resulted from the driver being blinded by the late afternoon sun.

He said the public needed to be educated on such danger through the medium of television and radio, especially local radio, on a regular basis, and in particular during the winter months.

Túir Chomharthaíochta Signal Towers

Tógadh roinnt Túir Chomharthaíochta anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne agus ar fud na tíre idir 1804 agus 1806, nuair a tuigeadh don Ríocht Aontaithe go bhféadfadh Napoleon na Fraince a bhealach a dhéanamh chuici tré Éirinn, agus ionsaí á dhéanamh uirthi sa tslí sin. Tá rian de cheann de na túir le feiscint fós ar Cheann Sibéal agus tá fothrach eile i mBaile Dháith (ach an dá cheann sin lonnaithe ar thalamh príobháideac). Bhí ceann ar an mBlascaod Mór leis agus ceann eile in Airghleann laistíos de Chnoc Bhréanainn. Ní rabhadar in úsáid ach ar feadh tréimhse an-ghairid, chomh fada le 1809 ceaptar, agus bhí roinnt mhaith acu ina bhfothracha faoi 1840.

Signal stations (Signal Defensible Guard Houses to give them their correct title) were established around the coast of Ireland between 1804 and 1806 in response to a threat of invasion of Great Britain by the French, under Napoleon, via Ireland (which was then part of the United Kingdom). Their function was to signal information of the movement of shipping to the naval and military authorities. Several were planned for and built on the Dingle Peninsula, with remains still extant at Sybil Point (Ceann Sibéal – just to the north-east of where the Star Wars set was built!) and at Ballydavid Head (Túr Baile Dháith) (although this latter station may never have been used). There was also a tower on the Great Blasket Island, although little of it survives. Towers were also built slightly later at Kilshannig Point and about a mile south of Brandon Head (Pointe an Choma Dhóite), but little remains of these today. These stations are contemporary with the perhaps better-known Martello towers which can also be seen around our coasts, but none of which were built in Kerry.

We know that the Great Blasket and Sybil Head towers were built by a contractor, and cost £720-1-4 each, a considerable sum for the time but their remote locations would have added to the cost of construction.

So, what did they consist of and how did they operate? The stations were generally a two-storey rectangular or square tower, which was the guard house, with sometimes small barracks blocks added, often within a stone-walled enclosure. Signals were sent from tower to tower using a ‘ball and flag’ system from a large signal mast set next to the tower. A flag and up to 4 balls were raised in various combinations to convey signals. The towers would have been manned by 4 people consisting of a naval lieutenant, and one midshipman with two signalmen who made up the signal crew. There may also have been a military guard (of up to 7 men) to protect the signal crew.

It seems that the period of use of these towers was short, with many being abandoned by 1809, although some were brought back into operation during the American war of 1812-14, and many are marked as being ‘in ruins’ by the time of the publication of the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6” maps in the late 1830s/early 1840s. Many of these buildings are on private property, and indeed may not be in very safe condition, so should not be visited without permission from the landowner, and care should always be taken when near ruined structures.

Times Past Bravery Awards For Dingle

Fishermen

Ted Creedon

In October 1920 a motor vessel named Spree of Caherciveen caught fire outside the breakwater in Valentia Harbour and the crew were in grave danger of death by fire or drowning.

However, the crew of the Dingle motor nobby Mairéad raced to the rescue of their fellow fishermen and averted what could easily have been a terrible tragedy, according to The Kerryman.

The Royal Navy minesweeper H.M.S. Tring was also in Valentia Harbour and was about to launch a rescue boat when they saw the Mairéad going to the stricken Spree, according to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph.

The local Coast Guards set off for the Spree in a whaler but were driven back by the heavy seas. The Mairéad crewman Cornelius Brosnan advised skipper John Moriarty to approach the Spree while tied by the swan (rope) to the Mairéad’s anchor. That would allow them to winch clear of the burning vessel in case of mishap. She came alongside the Caherciveen fishing boat and took off her crew of five without any problem.

The crew of the Mairéad were; skipper John Moriarty, his brother Edward, Cornelius Brosnan (father of Noel Brosnan of The Gárraí, Dingle), Denis Devane and Cornelius Guerin.

Each crew member was awarded a bronze medal for bravery from the Royal Humane Society and Skipper John Moriarty, who was injured during the rescue, was also presented with a gold watch.

Most Heroic Rescue

Remarkably, one member of that crew had already received two bronze medals for saving a life at sea 24 years earlier in 1896. Cornelius Brosnan was only 16 years of age at the time. He and two companions were thrown into the sea when their small sailboat capsized due to a sudden squall in Dingle Bay. One of the three managed to climb on and sit astride the upturned boat, according to Noel.

“My father stayed in the water, grabbed an oar and kept the other lad, Callahan, who couldn’t swim, above water for maybe two or three hours until help arrived. In fact, the Coast Guard passed them in the bay on their way towards Ventry Coast Guard station but had to turn back because

of sea conditions and then they spotted the boys in trouble”.

“They brought the boys to the Coast Guard station in Dingle. They were soaking wet and were given some clothes. The only thing that was worrying my father was the fact that he was mooching that day (skipping school) and that his parents would find out!”

This feat of endurance has been regarded as one of the most heroic in the annals of the Royal Humane Society who presented Cornelius with a bronze medal. The young fisherman also received the King's bronze medal for gallantry in saving a life at sea, according to The Scotsman newspaper.

The medals were presented to the young hero at a special ceremony in the Dingle Court House by the Coast Guard.

Noel, who celebrated his 91st birthday on December 31st, is the proud keeper of his father’s medals and has a photo of his father with the medals on his coat.

Scríbhneoireacht Chruthaitheach dhaltaí Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

D’fhreastail na daltaí ar shraith ceardlanna le Dairena Ní Chinnéide, Scríbhneoir Cónaitheach Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhe sa Phobalscoil (i gcomhar le Ealaín na Gaeltachta). Seo samplaí dá gcuid oibre ar théama na séasúr ón gcéad cheardlann le daltaí Bhliain 2. Píosa eile atá anso ná scéal a scrígh dalta ó Bhliain a 1 bunaithe ar chluiche focal a deineadh sa rang agus samplaí de ‘Rap na Maidine’ ó dhaltaí Bhl.1. Bhí ana-chuileachta againn!

An tEarrach

Ag tosach na bliana bíonn gach aon rud ciúin

Ní bhíonn bláthanna sa talamh ná duilleoga ar na crainn

Ach fásann na plandaí agus beireann na huain

Agus tá sé soiléir go bhfuil an tEarrach ann.

Is bíonn sé soiléir nuair a bhíonn sé ag teacht

Bíonn na héin ag canadh go luath

An geimhreadh tar éis teacht is imeacht

Agus sinn réidh do rud éigin nua.

Tá an fuacht tar éis imeacht uainn

Agus teochtaí deasa inár dtreo

Bíonn dóchas insan Earrach dúinn

Agus beidh sé ag teacht is ag imeacht go deo.

- Abigail Ní Dhubhdha

An tEarrach

Is mise an tEarrach

Is mé dóchas na bliana nua

Is mé an leabaigh drúchta ag luí ar do ghairdín gach maidin

Is mé an síneadh beag le brath sna tráthnóntaí

Is mé an fás flúirseach ar fuaid na dúichí.

Is mé an saol nua i ríocht na n-ainmhithe

Is mé an sonas a bhraitheann tú ar pharáid Lá le Pádraig

Is mise an tEarrach

Tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú taitneamh as na míosa a chaithfimid le chéile.

- Órla Ní Alluráin

An Samhradh

Is breá liom an Samhradh

Gach lá ar an trá

Ag surfáil na dtonnta le huisce im chluasa

Is breá liom an Spáinn

Ag imeacht ar an eitleán

Ag snámh sa linn snámha

Is dinnéar amuigh gach oíche

Peil le Corca Dhuibhne

Ag buachtaint gach cluiche

Amuigh ar an bpáirc

Le mo gheansaí bán is dearg.

An tEarrach ag Fás

Bain díot do chóta trom, agus cuir ort do bhuataisí, téir amach ar an bhfeirm, tá caoire le breith, tá boladh an fhéir ghearrtha san aer, agus tá bláthanna le feiscint, tá glór na n-ainmhithe le clos, agus tá faoiseamh le brath, tá an tEarrach linn.

- Ellie Nic Gearailt

Is Mise an tEarrach

Is mise an tEarrach, chím lus an chroimchinn ag fás sna goirt.

Is mise an tEarrach, cloisim uain óga ag rith le háthas.

Is mise an tEarrach, braithim sioc ar an bhféar go luath ar maidin.

Is mise an tEarrach, bolathím na bláthanna nua sna sceacha.

Is mise an tEarrach, chím na héin ag tógaint nead sna crainn úra óga.

Is mise an tEarrach, cloisim ceol spraoiúil na n-éan.

Is mise an tEarrach, leagaim clóca Bhríde ar an dtalamh.

Is mise an tEarrach

Fianaise mé ar na rudaí níos fearr atá le teacht.

Samhradh

Faigheann sé níos teo, Tá an fharraige níos teo, Caitheann tú laethanta fada led chairde, Faigheann an lá níos faide, Faigheann do chraiceann níos doirchí, Faigheann do ghruaig níos éadtroime, Tá an Samhradh anseo.

- Ríona Ní Bheaglaoich

Cluiche Focal

Lá amháin ar fheirm bheag bhí na hainmhithe ag pleanáil.

“Ní maith liom an fheirm seo,” arsa an mhuc.

“Níl an bia go maith,” arsa an bhó.

“Ba cheart dúinn imeacht.” a scread siad le chéile.

Ar dtús bhí fadhb leis an ngeata.

“Cad a dhéanfaimid?” arsa an bhó.

An féidir leat léimt thairis?” a cheistigh an mhuc.

“Is féidir liom, ach ní féidir leat.”

Bhíodar ag smaoineamh ar feadh noiméid.

“Léim ar mo dhroim!” arsa an bhó. “Is féidir liom cabhrú leat.”

Shroicheadar an doras taobh thiar den teach. Bhí glas air.

“Usáid an peann luaidhe chun é oscailt” arsa an mhuc.

Níor oibrigh sé. Go tobann chonaic siad an clog. Bhí sé a cúig a chlog.

Thiocfadh an feirmeoir abhaile go luath. Ritheadar síos an bóthar tiubh tapaidh is ón lá sin ar aghaidh ní fhaca mé iad riamh arís.

- Nóra Bealin

Obair ghrúpa í seo ó Bhliain 1 chun amhrán a scríobh ag cur síos ar an tslí a bhraitheann duine an chéad rud ar maidin agus duine ag éirí go luath i rith an gheimhridh chun dul ar scoil.

Curfá samplach:

‘Ná bac an clog, ná bac an clog, tógfad é go bog

An mhaidin liath agus gránna

Bhreá liom fanacht sa leabaigh is bheith dána

Cúíg noimeat eile fén bplúid, téann m’aigne ar sciuird’

Rap na Maidine

Éirím as an leaba

Is bím ag ceapadh

Conas a bheidh an lá.

An mbeidh sé ina lá chun dul ar an trá

Nó an mbeidh sé ar cheann desna laethanta?

Chuireas m’éide scoile orm

Mo gheansaí gorm

Is mo léine bhán

Agus thosnaigh mé ag canadh dáin.

Nuair a shroich mé an scoil bhíos im’ amadán

Mar d’fhág me mo leabhair ‘ge baile

Bheadh an múinteoir ag gearán is ag cnáimhseán

N’fheadar cad a dhéanfaidh mé anois?

An rachaidh mé go dtí Trish

Chun mo scéal a rá

Gan nóta a fháil?

Mussels with Tomato and Chorizo

One of the most common ways to cook mussels is to cook some shallots and garlic, add a splash of wine and then the mussels. Cover them and then once they have opened add a little cream, parsley and seasoning. The balance of the sweetness from the shallots, acidity from the wine, the richness from the cream when combined with plump mussels full of flavours of the sea make this a dish to savour.

For this recipe I have brought Spanish flavours to the table. Imagine the aroma that fills your kitchen as chorizo sizzles in the pan, releasing its spicy oils and infusing the surroundings with its irresistible scent. Then, when this is all mixed with the tomatoes and mussels, you are in for a feast.

Once you know how to prepare them, the cooking process is very easy. To prepare them all you have to do is to inspect them to check that each mussel is closed and the shell is intact and not broken. Once you have given them a wash, squeeze each mussel and pull away the thread like beard from the shell. If it has any barnacles use a knife or scrape them off the side of the sink (you will find that most mussels are well washed now so you shouldn’t find many barnacles on them).

This whole process will only take a few minutes and now they are ready to cook.

Serve this masterpiece in a rustic bowl, garnished with fresh herbs and accompanied by crusty bread to soak up every last drop of the flavourful broth. It's a feast for the senses, a celebration of Spanish culinary artistry that will transport you to the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean with every mouthful.

Ingredients

100g chorizo, chopped

1 shallot, finely chopped

1 clove of garlic, crushed

100ml dry white wine

250g tinned chopped tomatoes

1.5 kg mussels, cleaned

handful flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped dash of rapeseed oil salt and pepper some bread to serve

Method

Put a pot over medium heat, add a little oil and then add the chorizo. Allow this to cook for about 5 minutes until it starts to brown a little. At this stage add the shallots, garlic and thyme and let it cook for a further 5 minutes. Add the wine and let it cook for about 3-5 minutes. Once the wine has reduced a little add the tomatoes and cook

them for a few minutes. Add in the mussels and cover the pot with a lid. Cook this for about 4 minutes or so. Add in the parsley and cover again for another minute. All of the mussels should have opened at this stage, any that haven’t need to be discarded. Season with salt and pepper and serve with crusty bread.

It’s All In The Mind:

Il Dolce Far Niente

The Sweetness of Doing Nothing

Take a breath

Sit alone in a comfortable spot

There s nothing for you to do right now

Everything is fine

How long before your mind starts nagging?

‘What are you doing?’ - ‘Nothing’ ‘Why not?’ - ‘No reason’

‘But what about…?’- ‘It doesn’t matter right now’

‘But what’s the point?’ - ‘There is no point’

Alarm bells ringing

You should be doing something

You re wasting time

This can’t be right

The mind tries again

‘What are you learning?’ - ’Nothing’ ‘How can you justify it?’ -’ I don’t’ ‘Time is running out’ - ‘Time is relative’ ‘What are you achieving?’ - ‘Nothing’

At least enjoy it

You should watch a film

Read a book

Scroll aimlessly

Thoughts are piling up

You should work out so you get healthy

You should pray to save your soul

Plan ahead and avoid the unexpected

You can’t just sit here and do nothing It’s so boring

How long more

I wonder what time it is

Time to do something!

What about ambition?

You have to prove your worth

Castlegregory National School was selected to be part of the new innovative Arts-In-Education BLAST Residency Programme recently. The aim of this scheme was to give pupils in schools all over the country the opportunity to work with a professional artist on unique projects.

Castlegregory N.S. made a bottle cap mural, "A Fisherman at Sea". The school would like to thank Lee Strand for donating some of the bottle caps and the school community for recycling their bottle caps. Thank you also to Tricia O' Connor, our artist in residency.

Who will save the world

You ll never be special

What about making an impression?

The mind starts to panic

You ll pay for it

You ll fall behind

You’ll be sorry

Sit back and observe the mind’s show

Let the thoughts come and go

You re not in a starring role

You’re not in control

You re just sitting here doing nothing

What a relief!

Like the tree just getting old

And the cat sitting by the stove

Like the planet spinning in space

And the small child admiring its toes

You’re not the only one.

Out of the Picture

Ní Fál go hAer É

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Dhá chluiche sraithe, agus dhá chliseadh. Ábhar díomá, déarfá, ach le hais cuid de na torthaí a bhí anuraidh ag lucht Thrá Lí, bhí cur chuige nios slachtmhaire, cosaint níos diongbhálta agus ionsaí níos géire le feiceáil acu ná bhí go dtí seo.

Ba dheacair céilí comhraic níos dainséaraí ná Cathair Chorcaí a roghnú do na Ciarraígh mar chéad chluiche sraithe na bliana. Chaill muintir Chros an Tornóra a n-áit sa Phríomh-Shraith anuraidh, agus is fuath leis an dream cois Laoi bheith in áit ar bith ach ar barr an imeartha – is cuma cén cluiche atá i gceist!

Níorbh é an tús ab fhearr é don chúl báire nua, Antonio Tuta, a ndeachaigh naoscaire Chorcaí thairis faoi dhó sara raibh leath uair a chloig imeartha. Beidh gá ag lucht na Ríochta le teachtaniar tapaidh a fhoghlaim, mar is ar an dóigh chéanna a fuair Fánaithe Bhré an ceann is fearr orthu seachtain ina dhiaidh sin, mar a chífimid.

Ba bheag nár bhain captaen nua Chiarraí, Andy Spain, an droch-chuma de chlár na scór go luath sa dara leath, ach d'éirigh le cúl báire Chorcaí, Brad Wade, an liathróid a ghabháil sara ndearnadh aon mhaith. Agus níorbh é Spain amháin a chruthaigh go maith an oiche sin, ach Sean McGrath agus Steven Healy chomh maith. Déanfaidh siadsan an beart amach anseo.

Is trua go raibh máchaillí mar a bhí ar an gcéad chluiche sraithe baile an Aoine dar gcionn: stoirm chlocha sneachta i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair nár mhair ach dornán nóiméadaí ach a d'fhág brat uisce oighreata ar an bpáirc go deireadh, agus stoirm leictreach a chuir an dara mhoill ar an imirt ar feadh leathuaire.

Bhí na Ciarraígh ag cruthú go maith sa céad ceathrú uaire, gur phléasc na scamaill, agus ba chosúil orthu i ndiaidh an atosaithe gur baineadh an teaspach díobh. Ba mhó fós an diomú a bhí orthu nuair a bhronn an Réiteoir an dara carta buí ar Nathan Gleeson, is dhíbir on bpáirc é. Má bhí an t-éadóchas ar chuid den lucht tacaíochta, áfach, ghlac na himreoirí misneach chucu agus d'éirigh leo dul chun cinn díreach roimh am sosa le cúl álainn ó Kevin Williams, agus ní raibh an chosúlacht ar lucht Chille Mhantáin go ceann i bhfad go n-éireodh leo maitheas a bhaint as an mbuntáiste fear a bhí anois acu.

Chuaigh Bré i mbun oibre aris, agus bhain dhá chúl eile as an imirt, agus na trí pointí le tabhairt abhaile acu. Ach tá cosúlacht feabhais ar fhoireann na Ríochta, agus má bhaineann siad rud éigin as dhá chluiche le Treaty United an deireadh seachtaine seo, beidh tús maith curtha acu leis an séasúr.

The Purpose of the Universe

le Philip Goff

foilsithe ag

Oxford University Press

Timpeall agus timpeall agus thar nais arís.

‘Why are we here? What’s the point of existence? On the ’big questions’ of meaning and purpose, Western thought has been dominated by the dichotomy of traditional religion and secular atheism. In this pioneering work, Philip Goff argues that it is time to move on from both God and atheism. Through an exploration of contemporary cosmology and cutting-edge philosophical research on consciousness, Goff argues for cosmic purpose : the idea that the universe is directed towards certain goals, such as the emergence of life. In contrast to religious thinkers, Goff argues that the traditional God is a bad explanation of cosmic purpose. Instead, he explores a range of alternative possibilities for accounting for cosmic purpose, from the speculation that we live in a computer simulation to the hypothesis that the universe itself is a conscious mind. Goff scrutinizes these options with analytical rigour, laying the foundations for a new paradigm of philosophical enquiry into the middle ground between God and atheism. Ultimately, Goff outlines a way of living in hope that cosmic purpose is still unfolding, involving political engagement and a non-literalist interpretation of traditional religion.’ -

Ó Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Tá an Úcráin fós fé dhian ionsaí ag fórsaí Putin. Tá NATO agus Meiriceá agus tíortha mar an tSeapáin agus an chloch sa mhuirilte acu do Putin. Tá na mílte Rúiseach tréis a mbaile a thréigint agus scata mhaith ná fuil ró gheal do Putin. Gan dabht chuir sé déistean ar dhaoine ansúd mar a tugadh nimh do Alexei Navalny agus anois a bhás gan choinne gan mhíniú.

Má bhíonn sos nó réiteach sa Mheán Oirthear an ndíreóidh NATO 7rl ar chúnamh láidir míleata a thabhairt don Úcráin. Mar a deirtear, is maith an scéalaí an aimsir. Féach mar atá tárlaithe sna Sé Chondae. Cothrom agus ceart.

Dá bhfaigheadh na hIsréalaigh scortha ó Hamas is dócha go mbeadh saol socair ag an dá thír. Deirim é sin ach ní údar mé ar stair an réigiúin. Tá gach éinne beagnach ag iarraidh sos a ghlacadh agus réiteach a fháil ach má leanann Hamas beidh scrios agus sléacht á dhéanamh ag Pailistínigh nó ag Isréalaigh. Is trua é mar scéal.

Ag Díol agus ag Ceannach

Tá na marglainn fé lán tseoil i scata áiteanna i dtuath Éirinn - ag áireamh Marglann an Daingin, gamhna óga agus a leanas. Tá an praghas reasúnta maith ar stoc agus ar chaoire ach tá sé an – luath fós. Inár gceanntar féin anso is beag caora beirthe fós ach tá an t-am tagha don uan agus don ngamhain. Go n-éirí an séasúr agus an saol leis an bhfeirmeoir bocht.

Leabhar

Leabhar a bhíos ag léamh ná an ceann a bhí scríte ag Eoin Ó Sé le eolas ó Phádraig Ó Conchúir mac do Chub Ó Conchúir ó Chill Orglan. Níl aon amhras ach go raibh teacht aniar i Chub.

Ní raibh sé rófhada saolaithe i Londain mar a raibh a mhuintir san am, nuair a bhuail an eitin a thuistí agus fuair an bheirt acu bás. Bhí Chub ina dhíleachta. Chaith se seal le aintín agus i ndíleachtlann. Chuaidh sé ar scoil agus as san dtí Scoil Eacnamaíochta Londain. Ina dhiaidh sin tháinig sé dtí fód dúchais a mhuintire. Chuir sé gnó ar bun agus bheartaigh sé tréis tamaill tabhairt fé shuíochán a ghnóthú ar an gComhairle Contae rud a dhein. Tá's ag cuid mhaith agaibh gur thug sé fén nDáil ina dhiaidh sin agus d’éirigh leis. Roimhe sin bhí sé páirteach i gCogadh na Saoirse agus ina dhiaidh thug sé lán fhostaíocht do mhuintir Chill Órglan. Is liodán a bhfuil i gCill Órglan, Cill Áirne 7rl a thug Chub chucha, sort gaiscíoch i saol na muintire ab ea é. Bhí aithne agam agus ag go leor air ach ní raibh aon eolas againn ar a ndein sé dá phobal ná ar na gaiscí a chuir sé i gcrích. Chonaic sé Murchadh an fear bocht ina óige ach bhain sé barra bua amach, i nganfhios do scata.

Fear mór cuite b’ea é. Bhí dhá chú aige Spanish Lad a bhuaidh mórán rás agus Spanish Battleship a bhuaidh Dearbí Con na hÉireann trí uaire. Léirigh sé a ghéaraíocht agus a éirim ins gach cúram a tharraaig sé air féin. Caid

Bhuaidh Ciarraí ar Mhaigh Eo deich lá ó shoin le pointe. Ní raibh mórán crích ar Chiarraí. Bhí an ping pong ar siúl acu ó thosach deire. Murach an bheirt dearthár Diarmaid agus Páidí Ó Clúmháin bheadh gabhair déanta doibh. Caid sall is anall arís agus arís eile. Ní raibh ach marcáil leath chosach acu agus ag pasáil na caide siar coitianta. Bhí Maigh Eo taoibh le ceathrar déag cuid mhaith don dara leath agus is dócha múrach san bheadh an lá leo. Tá's agam gur ag braith roimis atá Jeaic Ó Conchúir ach tá riail amháin ná bí ag scaoileadh na liathróide siar. Sa chás san beidh seans ag an bhfoireann eile na beárnaí a iamh. Ní amháin sin ach go raibh Ciarraí sa bhaile agus chuireadar scata caide amú. Seachas Ó Donnchú agus cúpla imreoir eile ní raibh aon abhar craobh Sam a bhuachaint ag Maigh Eo. Ní chabhraidh an chith trom a thit le éinne. Chuir an chluiche díombá ceart orm.

Toradh. Ciarraí 0-16 v Maigh Eo 0-15. Mar bharr ar an ainnise dhein Bleá Cliath gabhair ar fad dúinn le 3-18 v 1-14. Tá muinín fós agam i Jack.

Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh

Má bhí díombádh orm fén gcluiche caide, a mhalairt ar fad a bhí i gceist i gcás Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh. Tá an-mholadh le fáil ag gach duine a bhí bainteach leis go príomha an bheirt stiúrthóir Niamh Ní Bhaoill agus an fear iltréitheach Breandán Ó Beaglaoi. Ní amháin go raibh sé ina stiúrthóir ach bhí sé ag seint ag amhrán agus dorn scéalta grinn aige. Bhí ceol amhráin agus fáiltí tráthnóna Dé Ceadaoin i dtigh fháilteach Bhruic nuair a sheol an bheirt an scoil cheoil Bhí ranganna ceoil ann don óg agus aosta. Bhí comhrá Gaolainne cupla babtha ann fé stiúir Mícheál Toose Mac Gearailt agus Setanna á stiúrú ag Christí Mac Gearailt agus rince ar an sean nós.

Ag glacadh páirt sa chéad Choirm Ceoil in Ionad an Bhlascaoid bhí Breandán Ó Beaglaoi, mar Fhear an Tí agus ag amhrán agus ag seinnt. Bhí Seánas ó Guithín, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin ón Sean-Phobal i nDéise Múmhan, Ailean Dómhnallach a bhí ag casadh ag ócaidí eile, Sláine ní Chathalláin, Ellie ní Shé, Ciara de Mórdha agus tuilleadh.

Sa tríú Coirm Ceoil, ar an bFeothanaigh, ag glacadh páirt bhí Anne Conroy Burke agus Mary Conroy, Muireann Nic Amhlaoidh, Dónal O’Connor agus Garry Ó Beirne, Ciarán ó Gealbháin, Katie O’Sullivan, Brighde Chaimbeul, Seán Ryan agus Colm Murphy, Fiachra agus Ferdia Ó Mongáin, Maire agus Tim McHugh agus Muintir Shé Dhún Chaoin cúigear don gclann le chéile agus dhein Tomás rinnce sean- nóis go spleodarach. Fág fútha é. Ní rabhas ag an dara coirm ceoil is baolach.

Thug an Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaí cur síos ana mhaith ar phóstaí uair dá raibh a bhíodh bailí agus scata a bhí mí-bhailí, ina mbíodh airgead uaireanta ag slánú fadhbanna nó cúrsaí poilitíochta. Féach ar an ámhrán, ‘A stóirín ná tabharfá do láimh dom’! Scoil mheala.

Caithfead stad mar tá slí ag brú orainn.

Bás

Fuair Pádraig Ó Máirtín ó Rinn Chonaill bás lé déanaí. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Edith, mac Pádraig, iníonacha Áine, Eléin agus Marie, deirfiúracha Áine agus Eibhlín garchlann gaolta agus cáirde. Is mó cabhair a thug sé dom i gcaitheamh na mblianta.

Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam.

Fuair Máire Ní Scanláin Uí Ghearailt ó Bhaile ‘n Lochaigh bás ar an 15ú Feabhra in Óispidéal Ollscoile Chorcaí. Méala mór a bás dá céile Gerard, a beirt mhac Gearóid, agus Tomás, iníon Máire, deartharacha Séamus agus Pádraig, garchlann gaolta agus cáirde.

Gur i bhFlaitheas Dé a hanam óg macanta.

Fuair Tomás Mac Gearailt, ó Chill Chúile agus California bás i Meiriceá le déanaí. Bhunaigh sé comhlacht gaolainne, Bárd na nGleann agus Litríocht.com chun leabhair Gaolainne a dhíol ar líne.

Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Sally, a mhac Liam, deartháracha, Noel, Stiofán, Máirtín, Breandán, deirféaracha Áine, Máire agus Eibhlín. Mac ab ea é do Chaitlín gus Pádraig ná maireann. Amhránaí binn b’ea Pádraig.

In íothlainn Dé a anam.
