Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara

Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, is Ireland’s eighth and largest National Park, with more than 70,000 acres of lands and seas in public ownership.

The Páirc will be dedicated to the protection and restoration of its internationally-significant biodiversity and archaeological heritage.

The new Páirc, which is centred around Corca Dhuibhne, will unite some of Europe’s most ecologically valuable places in celebration of nature. It brings together new acquisitions by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, such as the Conor Pass, the Owenmore River catchment, lands at Mount Brandon and the sand dune system at Inch Peninsula, along with sites already under State ownership, such as the limestone reefs of Kerry Head Shoals and the waters around the Blasket Islands.

The Páirc’s heritage legacy is further enhanced by the inclusion of lands on the Great Blasket Island, the globally significant UNESCO World Heritage property of Sceilg Mhichíl, and Derrynane House, Historic Park and Beach, which are managed by the OPW. Further collaborations with BirdWatch Ireland, who manage Little Skellig and Puffin Island, and with the Commissioners of Irish Lights, who manage An Tiaracht Nature Reserve, ensure that these internationally important sites for seabirds are also an integral part of the Páirc.

The landscapes, islands and seas of this region are of enormous significance for biodiversity. Starting in the majestic uplands of Mount Brandon and Conor Pass, we find active blanket bogs and heaths, with famed alpine flora, providing valuable habitats for the Peregrine Falcon, Otter and Marsh Fritillary butterfly. Nestled among them is the pristine Owenmore river, one of the last remaining refuges of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel. Down at the coast, we can see some of the finest sand dune systems in Europe, which are home to the Natterjack Toad, before heading out to sea to encounter the shallow bays, which are important breeding sites for sharks and rays, and an extensive and biologically rich marine limestone reef system. The islands speak for themselves, with entire populations of rare and endangered seabirds such as Puffin, Storm Petrel, Gannet and Razorbill, as well as unique communities of lichen and other flora.

Equally, the area’s cultural and archaeological value cannot be overstated. The UNESCO World Heritage property of Sceilig Mhicíl, an island of global importance, is at the heart of the Páirc’s cultural heritage. The seas that surround it, meanwhile, were the routeways of the past and

the last resting place of many historic wrecks. They include the Spanish Armada vessel of Santa Maria de la Rosa, which was lost off Blasket Sound in 1588. On the mainland, the landscapes of the Páirc document the history of settlement in the region, with archaeological monuments and traces of people over the millennia, including those who etched ogham script on the ancient standing stone at Araghglen on Mount Brandon, a National Monument.

The sites are heavenly designated under current European Directives, National laws and are under our strongest biodiversity laws already but the

new label brings with it a commitment from the NPWS to carry out significant restoration work and brings the sites under the NPWS annual budget.

The new park will now be able to benefit from Government funding on an ongoing basis. The NPWS will draw up a management plan for the park working with the local community and Kerry county council and will employ staff to work on the ground in the park which will help to maintain and preserve the area for generations to come.

Nettles - A Timely Tonic for the Weary!

It is wonderful to see the young nettles shooting up along our hedges, in ditches, wastelands, and gardens. Stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) have a rich history in Irish folk and herbal medicine, dating back nearly as long as they've been around. Legend has it that these nettles were first brought to our shores by Caesar's soldiers after their gruelling march across Europe and Britain. Away from the warmth of ancient Rome, the soldiers' bare legs suffered from the long miles they covered. At day's end, they'd gather armfuls of nettles to soothe and warm their weary limbs. Despite the discomfort, we owe them a debt, as our ancestors quickly embraced nettles to treat a wide range of ailments, from urinary tract issues to arthritis, gout, hypertension, and more.

Nettles in Science

Unsurprisingly, the pain relief the Roman soldiers felt is more than mere hearsay and modern science can now validate the analgesic (pain-relieving) properties of nettles, particularly in conditions like arthritis and joint pain. While the exact mechanism may not be fully understood yet, several of its active substances contribute to nettle's potential analgesic effects:

1. Anti-inflammatory Action: Nettles contain various anti-inflammatory compounds such as flavonoids (including quercetin), phenolic acids, and lignans. In conditions like arthritis, inflammation contributes significantly to pain. By reducing inflammation, nettles may indirectly alleviate pain.

2. Histamine and Serotonin Modulation: Nettles contain substances that can affect the release and action of histamine and serotonin, which are neurotransmitters involved in pain perception. By modulating these neurotransmitters, nettles may help reduce pain sensitivity.

3. Joint Lubrication: Compounds found in nettles, such as boron and silica, are important for joint health and lubrication. Improved joint function and reduced friction between bones may lead to decreased pain.

4. Nerve Stimulation and Blood Flow: Some components in nettles may interact with nerve receptors, leading to altered nerve signal transmission related to pain. Additionally, improved blood flow to affected areas can promote healing and alleviate pain.

5. Prostaglandin Inhibition: Nettles may inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that play a role in inflammation and pain. By reducing prostaglandin levels, nettles can help alleviate pain symptoms.

The young shoots of nettles are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C, E, K, beta-carotene, and essential minerals like iron, magnesium, silica, and calcium. These nutrients have a stimulating effect on the kidney, bladder, and urinary system. Consuming nettles in Spring helps detoxify the body, clearing out toxins accumulated over winter. Nettles also enhance the excretion of uric acid, which can reduce symptoms of gout and arthritis. Their anti-inflammatory compounds,

combined with minerals such as silicon and boron, can alleviate pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis, while reducing inflammation in joints and tendons.

In addition to these benefits, there is compelling evidence supporting the use of nettles for hay fever and allergies affecting the nose and sinuses (assuming you are not allergic to nettles yourself). Nettles have also been traditionally used to manage hypertension by regulating arterial pressure and strengthening blood vessels. Their iron content makes them effective in treating anaemia, while the presence of vitamin K helps regulate blood coagulation. Lastly, nettles are an excellent source of silica, a vital mineral that strengthens the bone matrix. Working in tandem with collagen, silica contributes to the strength of bones, skin, hair, and nails. These diverse health benefits showcase the value of a plant often dismissed as a nuisance! Always consult your own healthcare team if you have underlying health issues or are taking medication before considering adding nettles to your health care routine.

How to make a Nettle Infusion:

Making a nettle infusion is a great way to harness this timely Spring time tonic and enjoy some its benefits:

All you need:

Fresh nettle leaves (about 1-2 cups)

Water (4-6 cups)

Instructions:

• Use young, tender nettle leaves for the best flavour and nutritional content. Wear gloves to avoid getting stung by the nettles. Bathe the nettle leaves thoroughly in cold water to remove any dirt or debris.

• Bring 4-6 cups of water to a boil in a pot on the stove.

• If using fresh nettle leaves, roughly chop them to release their flavour and nutrients. Place the prepared nettle leaves into a heatproof container, such as a teapot or glass jar.

• Carefully pour the boiling water over the nettle leaves in the container. Cover the container with a lid or plate to trap the steam and let the nettle leaves steep in the hot water for at least 10-15 minutes. Steeping longer (up to 30 minutes) can extract more of the beneficial compounds from the nettles.

• After steeping, use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the nettle leaves from the liquid. Pour the infused liquid (nettle tea) into a clean container or mug. Your nettle infusion is ready to drink! You can enjoy it hot or let it cool down and drink it as a refreshing iced tea.

You can add a squeeze of lemon, slivers of fresh ginger or a drizzle of honey to enhance the flavour of nettle infusion. Store any leftover nettle infusion in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat gently before drinking or enjoy it cold.

Making the Most of your Nettle Tea!

The steam of nettle tea is good for the respiratory system and skin so while waiting for it to brew you could have a mini-facial by covering your head with a towel and placing your face over the pot or bowl of steaming nettles. Once it has cooled enough to drink, enjoy your nettle tea. The strained leaves can be used as a compress for inflamed and painful joints. Nettles are truly a timeless remedy that costs nothing to try and leaves nothing wasted – Nature’s Spring time gift for you to enjoy.

President Higgins Commends Sun Glare Campaign

Two weeks ago West Kerry Live contributor Ted Creedon received a letter from Áras and Uachtaráin commending the sun glare campaign on the Dingle Peninsula.

The letter reads: ‘The President commends you for the work and commitment you have demonstrated in raising awareness of the dangers of sun glare while driving. Road Safety is a matter to which the President attributes the greatest importance. The President thanks you for dedicating your time to improving road safety for all and sends his best wishes to you and your family’.

Background:-

In January last year two Dingle sisters were driving towards Dingle in the late afternoon when they were suddenly blinded by the glare of the sun. Moments later they were in a collision with another vehicle and both sisters were seriously injured. They spent almost three months in hospital and are still recovering.

The husband of one of the sisters, Ted Creedon, had also experienced sun glare blindness earlier that same day but he was able to pull into Moran’s garage until the sun rose higher.

‘I never experienced that before – being totally blind behind the wheel. In fact, as far as I can recall I never heard a warning about the threat of sun glare on radio or TV. However, since that day I have met so many people who have had similar experiences, including Gardaí, that I have yet to meet someone who hasn’t’, he told West Kerry Live this week.

He sought support and advice on a campaign by writing to the President, the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, Minister Ryan, the Road Safety Authority and others in November last year. The most encouraging response was from the President’s office. He couldn’t get involved due to Constitutional restrictions but that was ‘rather than any lack of empathy’.

Ted decided to try and raise awareness of the danger through interviews and discussions on radio, in newspapers, in this publication and on television. He and his daughter Siún came up with the basic design of a car sticker which he then asked neighbour Deirdre O’Connor to bring to life on her computer. After four or five versions they settled on a strong, colourful image.

That image appeared in this magazine in every issue from November to April.

Edwin, the Dingle Printer, off John Street, printed over a thousand of these stickers at no charge because he believed in the campaign. More than 300 additional stickers were printed with Irish text thanks to funding by Duchas an Daingin.

The stickers were distributed all over the area, to individuals, businesses, the hospital and to the senior classes in every one of the 18 primary schools on the peninsula, from Dún Chaoin to Castlemaine. The students were asked to take them home for the family car.

In mid-February Ted wrote to Luke Sweeney, the President’s secretary, to let him know how the campaign was going and he included two stickers in the envelope for himself – not for the President’s car!

He thought no more about it – had no expectation of a response and was somewhat stunned when the second letter arrived from Luke Sweeney, from the Áras, two months later – that was two weeks ago.

‘This is great recognition indeed but it wasn’t a one-man show. The support and encouragement was there from local media - The Kerryman, Radio Kerry, Radio na Gaeltachta, Nuacht TG4 and from Dingle Printing, Duchas an Daingin, West Kerry Live, the Principals of the 18 primary schools and the local community’ Ted said.

Asked if he was going further with the campaign he said ‘I’ve done as much as I can. All it needs now is for the Road Safety Authority, who have produced some excellent road safety warnings for radio and TV, to produce warnings on how to deal with sun glare for regular broadcasting on radio and TV, especially radio, during the winter months’.

Local Archaeology: Dún An Óir

Tá scéal Dhún an Óir ar eolas ag ana-chuid do mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne. Is dún ceann tíre é atá ar an dtaobh thiar de Chuan Ard na Caithne. Ba ar an 10 Samhain 1580 a tharla an t-ár ana-thruamhéileach anseo. Bhí saighdiúirí ón Spáinn, ón Iodáil agus ó Éirinn ag tabhairt tacaíochta don dara Eirí Amach ag na Gearaltaigh, agus iad faoi cheannas Sebastiano de San Giuseppí, Iodálach. Tar éis léagar trí lá sa dún, fé fhorsaí Shasana, agus an Lord Lieutenant Lord Grey de Wilton i gceannas, ghéilleadar agus maraíodh iad go léir ach amháin San Giuseppi féin agus a chomrádaithe. Tá roinnt do na fallaí cosanta fós le feiscint ar an suíomh, agus píosa dealbhóireachta ana-dheas le Cliodna Cussen ann anois, cloch a nochtadh i 1980, nuair a reáchtáil muintir na háite comóradh 400 bliain Chath Dhún an Óir.

The story of the siege and massacre at Dún an Óir, a promontory fort situated on the western site of Smerwick Harbour (in the townland of Ard na Caithne or Smerwick, as Béarla) is well known in the locality. It was one of the many tragic events that happened during the Second Desmond Rebellion, and many Irish, Italian and Spanish soldiers, who had come to the area to support the Earl of Desmond, were put to the sword by English forces under the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Grey de Wilton and also the Earl of Ormond, and by Admiral Winters (who was in charge of the naval force) having surrendered after being besieged for a few days. This happened on November 10 1580. The Irish and Continental soldiers were commanded by Italian Sebastiano di San Giuseppe, who

hailed from Bologna, and who seemed to have ‘done a deal’ with the English, and escaped with his own life, along with a few of his comrades.

Visiting the site, a National Monument, today, one first sees a striking piece of sculpture, crafted by Cliodna Cussen. This was erected on the 400th anniversary of the massacre in 1980. This event was remembered with the staging of a pageant, with many local people acting out the parts of the main historical characters of the time. It would be wonderful if any of you had photos from this pageant.

The site still contains very obvious remains of the fortifications of the period, although sources indicate that the promontory had probably previously been fortified. It is considered to be one of the best surviving siege sites in the country, as it has never been built upon. Some of the place names in the area also refer to the siege, with ‘Gort na Gearradh’ (the field of the cutting) referring to an entrenchment dug as part of the fortifications (and not the massacre, as is sometimes suggested) and ‘Gort na gCeann’ (the field of the heads), perhaps referring to the place where executions were carried out.

The name of the site, Dún an Óir (the fort of gold), it has been suggested, may refer to stones once thought to contain gold which came from the wreck of the Emmanuel, captained by Martin Frobisher, which sank in the area in 1578. These stones, from Baffin Island, which lies off the north coast of Canada, were being brought back to England but today one can still find examples on the shore below the promontory fort.

No formal excavation has yet taken place here although there are some artifacts from the site in the national collection.

Drowned in Ventry

- Windsor and Eton Express 17 January, 1857

Last Thursday evening Mr. Garrett Cotter, Chief Boatman at the Ventry coast-guard station, was accidentally drowned when crossing the western ford on Ventry strand. It is understood he went to Dingle to collect the pay for the coast-guard station and headed back during daylight.

There are large blocks of stone placed across the river that flows through the strand and are used as stepping stones. They are always covered at high tide and it appears he must have missed one of the steps and was drowned.

His body was found on the strand after the tide had ebbed. The pay for coastguards was found in his pockets. His death has cast a gloom over the area as he was a very popular man and a native of Queenstown (Cobh).

Teacher kills teacher in Ardfert

- Shields Daily News, 29 August, 1905

At the Queenstown terminus of the Great Southern and Western Railway yesterday afternoon, Patrick O’Riordan and Thomas Driscoll were arrested on a charge of having murdered Mrs. Elizabeth O’Riordan, aged 25, at Ardfert, County Kerry.

Patrick O’Riordan who is a national school teacher, is the husband of the murdered woman and Driscoll is her brother. Mrs. O’Riordan, who was also a school teacher, was discovered dead in her bedroom on Sunday. Her neck was broken.

(At the Munster winter Assizes Patrick Riordan was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years penal servitude. The jury did not agree about the involvement of Driscoll and he was put back.)

Crushed by a horse

- Kerry Reporter, 6 March, 1897

After returning from a wedding ceremony near Currans last Tuesday evening one of the guests was ‘trying’ his horse at a fence. The rider’s name was Loughlin and as he attempted the fence the horse bangled (?) badly, rolled over and seriously crushed the rider.

On recovering, the horse placed its foot on the man’s face, which was mangled almost beyond recognition. Medical help was sent for and Loughlin’s face was stitched up but he lies in a precarious condition.

(Contacted a Tralee equine centre but they had never heard of ‘bangled’)

Seizure of wreck tobacco in Tralee

- Cork Examiner, 29 February, 1868

About 3am this morning Constable Nolan and sub-Constable Guerin were on night patrol in the town. Their attention was drawn to two common carts passing through the town which seemed to be carrying heavy loads of flour or corn.

The two policemen thought it was unusual and suspicious for such transport at that time of night. They stopped the carmen and asked them some questions but were not satisfied with the responses and they began to examine the loads.

They discovered bags of tobacco which they believed to be smuggled so they took both men and their carts into custody. The tobacco is supposed to be from a ship that was recently wrecked near Caherciveen.

Lispole farmer attacked by bull

Kerry Evening Star, 25 August, 1904

A Lispole farmer named Stephen Hickson was walking through some farmland two days ago when he was suddenly attacked by a bull. He was knocked down and badly gored by the animal.

Dr. Miles was summoned from Dingle and he attended to the injured man. He found two of Mr. Hickson’s ribs were broken and other, lesser, injuries but his recovery is still in doubt.

(How did he get away from the bull? Did neighbours help?)

Lunatic on the loose in Derrymore

- Kerry Reporter, 18 March, 1899

A terrible tragedy occurred early on Wednesday morning at Derrymore, about six miles from Tralee. A man named John Sullivan reported to the police around 7am that he had been assaulted by a near-naked man on the road who had beaten him with a crop.

Acting Sergeant Mulrooney and two constables immediately went to the place where they found a man in his nightshirt speaking with a man named Sayers who was trying to get him to go home and get dressed. The man at the centre of the disturbance was named Patrick O’Donnell. Seeing that O’Donnell was obviously a maniac the sergeant grabbed him, with the help of the two constables and he was strapped up and under control.

The police then visited O’Donnell’s home and were shocked to find old Mrs O’Donnell, the mother of the detained man, lying outside the house. She had been beaten to death with a heavy stick that was found nearby and covered in blood.

Attack on police barracks

- Londonderry Sentinel, 09 December, 1880.

Last Sunday night a crowd of people attacked the police barracks at Castlegregory but ran off before the police could turn out. The night before that the police barracks at Ballyheigue was also attacked by a mob but there were no serious incidents reported.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine,

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Gnáth-Obair na Sraithe

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Tar éis suaitheadh agus dul chun cinn na seachtainí Earraigh atá ríofa cheana againn, filleann cluichí na gCiarraíoch ar ghnáthobair chlub sraithe. Is annamh a leanann dea-thorthaí a chéile go rialta, agus de ghnáth tagann deireadh le sruth an áidh níos túisce ná mar ba mhaith linn.

Ní gá bheith diomúch nuair a tharlaíonn a leithéid. Tráth athchóirithe, am le haghaidh breith smaointeach a dhéanamh ar na pleananna ar éirigh leo, agus b'fhéidir níos tábhachtaí ná sin iad san nár éirigh leo.

Mar gan aon agó tá cumas i measc fhoireann seo Chiarraí. Ní hé amháin go bhfuil sé ráite ina dtaobh againn, ach tá sé cruthaithe acu ar pháirc an imeartha.

An deacracht anois ná go gcaitear é chruthú arís is arís, seachtain i ndiaidh seachtaine, agus dá fheabhas iad, téann díobh bheith ar barr na maitheasa go buan. Agus le cur leis an deacracht, ní bhíonn gach éinne ar barr a mhaitheasa ag an am céanna.

Seachtain amháin beidh ionsaitheoir ar fheabhas, ach caillfear an cluiche de bharr droch-sheachtain ag na cosantóirí. Seachtain eile, cosaint den scoth, ach gan lucht lár páirce bheith gníomhach a ndóthain.

´Má b'ábhar díomá dóibh cois Sionna coicíos ó shin é nár éirigh leo an báire a chur san eangach, a bhuíochas de fear cúil Treaty, Corey Chambers, níor de bharr easba iarrachta é. Ach mar a tharla, ní raibhg lucht ionsaithe Luimnigh ag feidhmiú mar ba chóir, agus ní raibh mórán brú ar Antonio Tuta i gcúl na gCiarraíoch.

Cúis bróid eile mar sin féin a bhí sa toradh sin, an t-ochtú cluiche as a chéíle gan teip. Ag deireadh an tséasúir, beidh lion clubanna nach mbeidh an méid sin féin le maíomh acu.

Ar ais sa bhaile an Aoine dar gcionn, b'iad Baile Átha Luain a bhí chucu. Cé go bhfuil torthaí maithe bainte amach ag an club lár tíre sa bhaile, níl a chomh-thorthaí faighte acu agus iad ag taisteal. Agus bhí an cosúlacht ar chúrsaí go raibh an scéal sin ag leanúint i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair nuair a chuir na Ciarraígh cic éirice san eangach roimh lár an chéad leath.

Bhí Kennedy Amechi (a scóráil an cúl sin), agus Ryan Kelliher ag cur chúl báire Enda Minogue faoi léigear, ach in aghaidh sruth na himeartha is ea d'aimsigh Ruben Ferreira cúl an chomhscóir cúpla nóiméad roimh an briseadh.

B'shin an t-am go mba chóir do Chiarraí treisiú lena n-iarrachtaí, ach b'é a mhalairt a tharla, ar shlí. Cé go raibh iarrachtaí fiúntacha ag Daire McCarthy agus Sean McGrath, bhí cosúlacht ar an gcuid eile go raibh an cluiche caillte cheana féin acu, ina n-intinní. Agus tháinig an tuar faoin tarraingreacht nuair a d'éirigh le Carl Mujaguzi cic as an ngnách a sheoladh caol díreach go cúl na heangaí thar Tuta isteach.

Deireadh le sraith amháin cluichí gan teip. Anois an t-am le tús a chur le ceann eile!

Most of the proceeds collected from the participants will be donated to local voluntary and charitable organisations who help out along the route.

TIDY TOWNS. The Tidy Towns Committee wish to thank all who helped collect 37 full bags of litter from the approach roads around Dingle during the Annual County Clean Up Day. A special mention for the Ukrainian Community who really contributed great numbers and enthusiasm to be part of this community event. Also thanks to our drivers who conveyed the participants to various starting points and to KWD and Kerry Co Co who arranged the distribution and collection of the bags and materials on the day.

As usual the majority of the litter collected was made up from the disposal by Fast Food users of cans, tins, boxes, containers and wrappings plus some unsuccessful lottery tickets.

DARKNESS INTO LIGHT WALK.

The Annual Darkness Into Light Walk which collects funds for Pieta House is scheduled for Saturday May 11th commencing at 4a.m.

Participants are reminded to register online prior to the event.

QUIZ Dingle Ladies Football Club wish to remind all quiz enthusiasts of their fundraising night in the Dingle Bay Hotel on Friday April 26th starting at 9p.m. Everybody welcome.

PÁIRC

NÁISIÚNTA NUA Páirc Náisiúnta Chorca Dhuibhne is my suggested name for the news reaching us today of the purchase of up to 70,000 acres of land and sea bed mainly around the Dingle Peninsula by Rialtas Na hEireann for

the people of Ireland.

Depending on the proper investment, locally based community and business involvement and input mixed with shrewd planning this project has the potential to rival the best there is in any part of the developed world. Let's hope it provides the much needed employment potential for so many young people who wish to live and work in their native county.

Well done to all who were involved in the planning and forward thinking and relatively secret negotiations behind the scenes to bring wonderful project to a satisfactory conclusion or should I say the project starting line as basically a lot of serious work only begins now.

SIÚLÓID NA COICÍSE WALK OF THE FORTNIGHT
West Kerry Live 2715

Our beloved mother, Brenda Kavanagh McKenna, late of Greys Lane in Dingle, passed away in April last year in Dublin after a long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

A primary school teacher for a great many years, Brenda was held in the highest regard by all fortunate enough to have known her, especially her children, friends, colleagues and many hundreds of past pupils. This was perhaps best illustrated by the vast numbers that attended services in Portmarnock and again in Dingle, on her final journey home to Milltown cemetery, overlooking Dingle Bay.

With her first anniversary approaching, we, her children, have been reflecting on our childhood and our lives with her, recalling anecdotes that brought laughs through our tears and feel that sharing some here will provide an insight into who our dear mother was as a person.

1st Anniversary Brenda Kavanagh

In her formative years, Brenda attended Coláiste Íde boarding school in Burnham. She had long wished to become a primary school teacher, however, as she was not blessed with a singing voice, which was a prerequisite in Ireland at the time, she decided to go abroad to fulfil her dream. She completed her Higher Diploma in Southampton University, where, as she would often delight in telling us, she first saw a traffic light. After completing her studies, she returned to Ireland to take up a job in Portmarnock National School, North County Dublin, where she would teach for the next 38 years.

Soon after settling in, she founded the first camogie team in the town. Each September she would have her class create flags and banners in preparation for the All-Ireland finals. More often than not these would be in green and gold and she would take great pleasure at the reaction of her pupils’ Dublin-born parents. Each Halloween she would decorate the house and dress up as a witch to give the children that called to the house a scare and make it all that bit more magical. On Christmas mornings she would have to be the first down the stairs just so she could see the joy on our faces.

Despite the distance, she would return to the beloved county of her birth at every opportunity, piling us into the car or onto the train to spend each school holiday and endless summers among her friends, with her parents, and with her beloved brother, Pat. A life-long Gaeilgeoir, she

would attend courses as Gaeilge in Dún Chaoin and Ballyferriter, meet friends in Ventry, and take us around Slea Head and Connor Pass, instilling in us a profound love of West Kerry.

Given Brenda’s enchanting personality she would gain friends wherever she went and was always charmed to be out ‘galivanting’ whenever the opportunity arose. Her nature was kind, gentle, and so very generous. She enjoyed long walks, gardening, meeting friends and participating in the drama society. She loved her ‘style’, as she called it, and looking through old photos since her passing, we forever see her draped in colour … oftentimes head to toe in electric pink.

We loved our mother dearly because she was just so easy to love. For example, she had an adorable habit of giggling the moment a camera was pointed in her direction. The longer it took for the photo to be taken, the louder her giggling would become. She was truly the best mother one could hope for, putting our needs before her own at all times. We would often hear our friends’ laments, wishing they had a mother as marvellous as she was. However, we were the lucky ones to have her as our own; someone so interested in our lives, providing endless encouragement, and so eager for us to be happy above all else.

Brenda was a selfless and compassionate person who enveloped us with warmth and comfort. She listened without judgment, provided guidance without force, and loved unconditionally. Her touch was soothing, her laughter contagious, and her smile lit up the world around her. She gave her heart and soul to us, and her unconditional love was a beacon that was truly felt by us all.

We would like to extend wholehearted thanks to our own friends who were such a comfort during what was an adverse and highly trying time. We would also like to thank everyone who attended the services as well as those who couldn’t be present for all their kind words of condolence and their stories of how they knew and were affected by her.

She was our mother, a truly wonderful person, and will be eternally missed.

Recently a group of 16 French students and two of their teachers from Lyceé Jean Perrin in Marseille took part in an exchange with students from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory. The students experienced the best of Irish culture and hospitality while visiting beautiful West Kerry and engaging in many activities as part of their exchange programme. They all had a wonderful experience with their host families and exchange partners. Many tears were shed when the students returned to Marseilles. In May students from Meán Scoil will head to Marseilles for their exchange. When you grow potatoes inside a polytunnel they will be ready to harvest approximately one month before any outside, so at the moment we are eagerly awaiting the flowers, which will indicate that we can begin digging, hopefully in only a few more weeks! Digging up potatoes is one of my favourite harvests, how much treasure will there be under

Féile na Bealtaine 2024

2ú - 6ú Bealtaine. 2nd - 6th May

Tá tinnte na Bealtaine á lasadh againn arís, agus muid ag casadh i dtreo an solas, ag oscailt ár gcroithe, ár n-aigní, ár gcorpanna dos na healaíon agus dá chéile. These are 5 days of miracle and wonder: let’s open up to the unknown, the unexpected and the unintentional!

As usual we have more events than we can properly describe or control. It’s an outpouring of our community’s need to create and celebrate, to let loose and live. Please take the opportunity to try something new, is deis é briseadh amach ó nósanna ár ngáth-shaol.

Féile na Bealtaine continues to renew, and we are really grateful to our newer younger volunteers this year who have begun to put their own imprint on the festival. We are as ever grateful to the openness of all the businesses, schools, voluntary groups and individuals who welcome us in, and help keep this show on the road.

Táimid 30 bliain ar an bhfód anois agus na lasracha fós ag léimneach. feilenabealtaine.ie

Hope Guatemala

Travelling

Twenty years ago Eddy Dieckmann, Ventry and his daughter Renana, Germany, travelled for the first time to Guatemala. Last January they decided to travel together again.

"After our first trip we founded, along with friends, the associations Nuevo Dia (Germany) and Hope Guatemala (Ireland). Many projects were implemented to improve the lives of the Mayan population.

This time we visited the health and nutrition centre CERNE , Chimaltenango where we are feeding 40 to 50 children every day and employ a doctor.

We also met with student in Alta Verapaz, the Highlands, whom we are supporting in their education with scholarships and education fees.

We took part in the ignauration of a newly built health centre to help to improve the situation of children and pregnant women in Xejuyup and the surrounding communities.

And finally we got the opportunity to meet the members of the community Laguna Ixcoch, Peten, high in the North of the country.

They were delighted that we handed over a document for a plot of land where they can build new houses and move from their flooded land and destroyed homes.

The families thanked us for bringing hope for a better future for their children.

We set out with light luggage and returned fully loaded with many words of hope, concern and dreams. We would like to pass on the gratitude to everybody involved with Hope Guatemala.

We realised and experienced again how little is important in life, but how important the little things are.

Hope Guatemala will have a raffle and cake sale at Féile na Bealtaine on 5th May from 11.00am in Dick Mack's Courtyard.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance

Dia dhaoibh go léir agus tá súil againn go bhfuil ag éirí go maith libh

Hello to all and we hope you are keeping well I hope you have all been enjoying the few days of fine weather we have had recently and long may it continue. It has been great to see the numbers of visitors increasing as we head toward the summer season.

A new national park on the Peninsula

The big story announced in the news this week with the official launch in the Dingle Skellig Hotel was the intention to create a new national park called Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara. This will be Ireland's first marine national park & our eighth national park in total.

The park offers a wonderful opportunity for local businesses as well as the surrounding community. The fact that we will all be able to have an input into how this project takes shape, through the intended engagement across West Kerry, means that we’ll be able to have our say before a management plan is developed.

From a tourism point of view, it would be regarded as a very positive step towards preserving the landscape and continuing to provide quality sustainable tourism. It would help us to continue our efforts to encourage visitors to extend their visit to the Peninsula by staying longer which ultimately helps local businesses and community, whilst enabling the visitors to really appreciate the language, culture and heritage that we have to offer and enjoy the walking, biking, water activities to name but a few that contribute to the slowing down and benefiting from the whole wellness of the Dingle Peninsula.

This is a move that could definitely benefit everyone on the Peninsula whether it be directly or indirectly, and Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance looks forward to being a part of the deep consultation on behalf of our local business members so that your voice is heard. We will be keeping you all up to date as the process gets going.

Western Mass Officials visit the Dingle Peninsula

The Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (GSCVB), using the brand Explore Western Mass and the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance have announced a co-marketing program to promote the Dingle Peninsula in Western Massachusetts and the Western Mass region on the Dingle Peninsula and throughout County Kerry.

Members of the Western Mass tourism community and officials from the Dingle Peninsula’s Sister City, West Springfield, Massachusetts will travel to Dingle April 30th to May 5th to participate in the Feile na Bealtaine, meet with the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, the local business community, and media.

A Chance to win a Free Holiday!!!!

Explore Western Mass – Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th of May celebrating Western Mass at Féile na Bealtaine Picture Yourself in Western Mass by stopping by the Explore Western Mass photo booth during the festival. The booth will be setup in front of Garvey’s Supervalu, Dingle town and by posting a picture on social media, one lucky participant will win a trip to Western Mass courtesy of Aer Lingus. Visit the booth and meet them to learn more about this beautiful part of Massachusetts that includes West Springfield, Dingle’s Sister City.

Location: Garvey’s SuperValu, Dingle

Friday 3rd: Noon to 6pm

Saturday 4th: 10am to 6pm

Sunday 5th: 10am to 2pm

National Tourism Strategy

This public consultation builds on previous focused sectoral and stakeholder consultation across the tourism sector. The questionnaire itself is primarily based on the guiding principles of the report of the Sustainable Tourism Working Group, established under the Tourism Action Plan 2019-2021 but also provides an opportunity for the public to provide any other views on what should be included in the new Policy Framework. Amongst the topics covered in the questionnaire are how to encourage tourists to visit less established destinations and to travel outside of peak season but also how to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector. Respondents are

Michael Greaney Ltd Agri Contractor

Ballyguin, Brandon, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

It’s All In The Mind:

Just For Now

JUST FOR NOW

It only takes a reminder to breathe, a moment to be still, and just like that, something in me settles, softens, makes space for imperfection. The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper and I remember again that life isn’t a relay race; that we will all cross the finish line; that waking up to life is what we were born for. As many times as I forget, catch myself charging forward without even knowing where I’m going, that many times I can make the choice to stop, to breathe, and be, and walk slowly into the mystery

It’s so easy to be so busy, caught up with life’s twists and turns. This beautiful poem by Danna Faulds reminds me to just stop and breathe and to just be for a moment. To switch from doing to being and resting for a while. The georgous weather we ‘ve had lately lends itself to taking a moment and simply feeling the warm sun on your skin or absorbing the stunning panoramas as you walk by. But it doesn’t matter where you are or what you are doing : what matters is the pause.

Kerry Minor Football Squad Announced: Michael Lynch Represents Milltown/ Castlemaine - Congratulations

Congratulations to Michael Lynch on making the Kerry Minor Panel which was announced in recent days. All involved in Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA are very proud of his achievement and look forward to supporting him in the Green and Gold as the season progresses.

County Senior Football League: Division 1, Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior 'A' side travelled to Strand Road, Tralee on Sunday afternoon to take on Kerins O'Rahillys in Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League.

Both sides came into the contest searching for their first win of the competition with the hosts losing their first three matches whilst Milltown/ Castlemaine fared slightly better with one draw and two defeats. Kerins O'Rahillys started much the brighter of the two teams and had a 0-4 to 0-0 lead built up by the 10th minute thanks to scores from Tom Hoare, Darragh O'Connor and Daniel Bowler. Eanna O'Connor finally managed to get Milltown/Castlemaine off the mark after 12 minutes with a free from an acute angle but this was cancelled out moments later when Kerry U20 footballer, Darragh O'Connor kicked his third point to leave it 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. The turning point in this game, however, was undoubtedly what occurred next as Jake Foley, playing midfield for the home side was shown a straight red card after catching David Roche high in the tackle. Centre-Forward Shane McElligott also left the play for O'Rahillys through what appeared to be an ankle injury so all of a sudden they were down two key players in central positions and the momentum shifted to the visitors. Pa Wren and Darragh O'Connor exchanged points from play to leave Rahillys ahead 0-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes but that would be the hosts final score for the remainder of the half as Milltown/Castlemaine hit 2-1 without reply before the break with the goals coming from Eanna O'Connor and Gavin Horan and O'Connor raising a white flag also to leave the half-time score 2-3 to 0-6.

Kerins O'Rahillys through an in-form Darragh O'Connor up front, notched the opening point of the second half to take his tally to five for the afternoon and then Eanna O'Connor and Barry John Keane exchanged points from play to leave it 2-4 to 0-8 after 37 minutes. Milltown/Castlemaine put their foot on the gas however for the next five minutes with another 2-1 unanswered with the goals coming from Brendan Casey and Jerome Flynn and Pa Wren notching his second score of the afternoon from full-back. The away side had now opened up a commanding 4-5 to 0-8 lead by the 43rd minute and it looked to be game over at Strand Road. To the home sides great credit, they rallied for the remainder of the contest and buoyed by a black card being shown to Milltown/Castlemaine's David Roche, it was 14 on 14 for the next ten minutes. The hosts made inroads during this spell as the visitors retreated with O'Rahillys scoring 1-3 without response.

Daniel Bowler with his second of the day and a fisted point from substitute Conor Hayes had the lead cut to 4-05 to 0-10 by the 50th minute and a penalty kick was awarded in the 52nd minute which was dispatched to the corner of Cormac Leane's net despite his best efforts to almost keep it out. Than man again, Darragh O'Connor landed his sixth and final point of the game in the 59th minute and suddenly it was game on as we headed for injury time with lead cut from 9 to 3 points in the space of fifteen minutes, Milltown/Castlemaine now leading 4-05 to 1-11. Kerins O'Rahillys threw the kitchen sink at the away side in injury time but the only scores that materialised in a six minute period were an exchange from Eanna O'Connor and Conor Hayes at either end to leave the final score 4-06 to 1-12 in Milltown/

Castlemaine's favour.

Well done to the players and management who now have 1 win, 1 draw and 2 defeats from their opening four fixtures in Division 1.

Round 5 will take place on Sunday, April 27th when Milltown/Castlemaine host Killarney Legion at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park at 6:30pm. All support is welcome.

County Senior Football League: Division 6B, Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior 'B' side were also on the road last weekend as they travelled to Foilmore to take on St. Michaels Foilmore 'B' in Division 6B of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. The lads put in a very workmanlike effort but unfortunately were on the losing side with the final score 2-10 to 0-10, the goals proving to be the difference on this occasion. Hard luck to the players and management.

Round 5 will take place on Sunday, April 28th when Milltown/Castlemaine travel away to take on John Mitchels 'B' at 4:00pm in Ballyseedy, Tralee. All support is welcome for the players and management.

Senior Ladies: Donal Curtin Cup Round 2

In conditions which are unfamiliar to us this year (sunshine! ) we made the trip back west on Sunday to face Dingle in the second round of Dónal Curtin Cup to face a strong & established Dingle team.

The first 10 minutes were an even affair, both teams sounding the other out before Dingle made the breakthrough with a well taken point, this opened up Dingle to notch on a few more scores before our girls found their groove with Tina Galvin fresh off the back of last weeks heroics coming close a goal as it whispered passed the post, and Tanya Joy relishing goals at the moment with another point blank save for the second week in a row as our defence came under pressure from a solid Dingle forward line.

In blistering heat we attacked the second half with more determination and ferocity notching up with 2 quick scores through Tina Galvin & Maeve O’ Connor, keeping Dingle to shooting from far out with some solid defence shown by Aileen Courtney, Nicola Kerins & Breda Moran. Some valiant efforts by our midfielders Paige O’ Connor & Evelyn Twiss, Angela Griffin stepping up with some lovely ball into our forward line.

Missing a few players through injury we always knew our trip back west would be a difficult one but the girls gave it their all and again for a second week in a row left it all on the field.

Thank you to Dingle for hosting today’s match in beautiful conditions.

As always thank you to our coach Linus, supporters and families who came to support our senior ladies in what is their inaugural year of senior football.

Message from Fr Michael

Last Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday. A day followers of Christ are invited to reflect on God as a Shepherd who looks out for us and keeps us safe. Years ago the great actor Richard Burton was given a grand reception in his childhood parish. While replying to the complimentary speeches in the parish auditorium he asked if there was anything, they specially wanted to hear from him. After a minute’s pause his old pastor asked him if he could recite the Good Shepherd Psalm (Psalm 23), which he had taught Burton in his Sunday school. A strange look came over the actor’s face. He paused for a moment, and then said, “I will, on one condition—that after I have recited it, you, my pastor and teacher will do the same.” “I,” said the old, retired pastor, “am not an actor, but, if you wish it, I shall do so.” Impressively the actor began the Psalm. His voice and intonation were perfect. He held his audience spellbound, and, as he finished, a great burst of applause broke from the audience. As it died away, the old pastor rose from his wheelchair and began to recite the same Psalm. His voice was feeble and shivering and his tone was not flawless. But, when he finished, there was not a dry eye in the room. The actor rose and his voice quivered as he said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I reached your eyes and ears, but my old pastor has reached your hearts. The difference is just this: I know the Psalm, but he knows the Shepherd.”

As we reflect on The Good Shepherd, Jesus wants us to know him by spending time in prayer and making his ways known in the way we live our lives. A simple prayer that we can say often is the familiar line from Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

A word of congratulations to the children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday. Bishop Ray Browne was the celebrant at the ceremonies. I pray that the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit will always be active in the lives of all those confirmed. A word of thanks to the parents, family members, teachers and the wider community who help pass on the faith and encourage the young to nourish their faith through prayer and action. In the coming weeks children will be receiving their First Communion. The best preparation is time spent in prayer.

Work is planned to commence on The Temperance Hall in the coming weeks. It is hoped that the work will be concluded by the end of July. We look forward to having a space that will be available for groups of different sizes, the young and the young at heart. On Sunday next as part of Kerry Diocesan Youth week we welcome the students from Colaiste Íde to our 11.30am Mass in St Mary’s, Dingle. They will lead us in singing and readings. All welcome.

Yours sincerely

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.

Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.

Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Dingle NA meetings are on Tuesdays 7.30pm & Fridays 8.30pm, in the Dingle Presbytery, off Green St, V92 AT18. www.nasouth.ie NA helpline 087 – 138 6120

Leading journalist Matt Cooper examines the key players behind the scenes of Irish property ownership - who really controls the valuable land where we live, work and play and how did they acquire it? Who are the new foreign investors and why are they buying property and land in Ireland? What does it mean for ordinary citizens when the ownership of shopping centres, wind farms, forestry and data centres comes from outside?

Comprehensively researched and filled with riveting detail, this compelling account of the Irish property landscape is about our offices, hotels and pubs and the power of those wealthy enough to accumulate these properties. This eye-opening book is a must-read for anyone interested in Ireland and who really owns it.’ - Gill Books

Ó Mhárthain

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Chúir an cheithre lá breá a fuaireamair ardú croí ar an bhfeirmeoir. Bheadh barraí áirithe déanach ach ní luifeadh ró mhór air.

Tá an t-airgead ar bheithigh bliana agus bulláin beagnach dúbailte. I gcásanna áirithe tá phraghas caorach dúbailte.

Anois go bhfuil toghcháin ag béal dorais againn tá cuid dos na páirtithe poilitiochta á fheachaint le chéile cé is mó geallúintí. Sin é an saol ach is dócha go ngealfaigh cuid éigin acu.

CLG

Ní chuir peileadóirí sinsir Chiarraí aon iontas ná misneach orainn tréis a mbua ar Chorcaigh. Is minic é ráite agam gur cuma maith nó olc na fóirne seo go mbíonn cluiche cruaidh acu i gCraobh chluiche caide na Mumhan. Pé cruaidh nó bog a bhí ní chuirfeadh sé aon ardú meanmnan ort. 0-18v 1-12.

Bhuaidh foireann caide fé fiche a haon atá á n-oiliúint ag Tomás Ó Sé, Ard ‘n Bhóthair ar Chorcaigh. Bua maith. Is léir go bhfuil fios a chúraim go maith ag Tomás. Dála an scéil ní raibh aon duine ó Chorca Dhuibhne ar an bhfoireann. Ní cháinfeadh san iad. Go n-éiri go geal leo. An bainisteoir a bhí ag Dún na nGall blianta ó shoin agus a dhein gaiscí, tá sé ar ais. Iontas na n-iontas bhuadar ar Dhoire. Is beag a déarfadh é. Ní raibh aon teoro leo. Ard- chluiche. Táim dá rádh leat gur beag barra-thuisle i bhfoireaann Thír Chonaill.

Bhí cluiche do-chreite idir iománaithe Luimní agus an Chláir. Bhí na Cláirínigh naoi phoinnte chun cinn ag leath ama agus i ndeire an lae bhuaidh Luimneach le trí phoinnte ortha. Dar liom go bhfuair na Luimnígh dhá bháide cuíosach bog. Tá bóthar fada fós le tabhairt acu ortha féin agus d’fhéadfadh go dtreasnódh siad ar a chéile arís. Níl aon teora le Luimneach. Nuair a bhí a ndrom leis an bhfalla d’éirigh ortha. Dhein na Cláirínigh praiseach don gcluiche sa dara leath. Cé a bhainfidh an bhearna dos na Luimnígh cheolmhara anois nó an é go mbeidh an séú craobh i ndiaidh a chéile acu? Fuair Luimneach báide ach bhí an fear istigh sa chearnóigh bheag. Bhí san soiléir ar an dteilifís. Ní mar sin a chonaic na maoir cúil é, an bhfuil aon leigheas ar an bhfadhb?

Bhuaigh mná Chiarraí ar mhná Thiobrad Árann sa chaid, le cúig phoinnte déag. Ní raibh an bhean seo againne Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh chun deire leis, bhí sí ar fheabhas.

Bhuaidh iománaithe sinsir Chiarraí i cluiche i gcomórtas Iomána chorn Joe McDonagh ar an Iar Mhí I-20 v 1-12.

Bhuaidh foireann caide Thír Eoghain ar an gCabhán le poinnte suarach amháin. Tá an- fheabhas tagtha ar an gCabhán. Bhuaidh foireann caide Maigh Eo ar Roscommán ach bhí ortha luí amach ortha féin. Ní raibh puinn ag Gaillimh in aghaigh Shligigh.

Bhuaidh iománaithe sinsir Phort Láirge ar Chorcaigh 2-25 V 1-25. Drámaíocht

Bainim an-shásamh as na drámaí- beidh Féile Drámaíochta ar an bhFeothanaigh an deire seachtaine seo. Béidh aisteoirí Bhréanainn agus Chúil Aodha ar an Aoine ar a 8 a chlog agus ar an Satharn beidh Éigse na Féile ar a trí a chlog agus Aisteoirí an Lóchrainn agus Aisteoirí Cois Laoi, ar a 8 a chlog. Bain sásamh as.
