A Walk through Annascaul History:

This October bank holiday Annascaul Historical Society invite you to join them on a guided walk through the countryside south of the village. Starting along the old butter road, where once the hedge school master taught his little school, hear tales of evictions, deserted villages, vanished industries and ways of life. Learn of dark deeds in the black orchard, the widow’s curse, smugglers’ cove, moonlight raids and shipwrecks.

The walk, led by Justin McCarthy and John Hanafin, will take place on Monday 31 October. Registration will be at Hanafin’s Bar on Annascaul’s Main Street from 11.00 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. The walk with its many information points should take about two and a half hours.

The money raised will contribute to the cost of the inscribed Coiscéim na Staire flagstones being placed in the village footpath. These will mark, with text and images, the locations of the various trades and activities of this outstanding example of a typical nineteenth century rural village. This is part of the upgrade of the N86: the historical society are working in conjunction with the National Road Design Office and with the help of South Kerry Development Partnership Leader funding.

An Díseart will hold a Christmas market on Sunday, December 11. The market will include local crafts, teas and coffees, a raffle, music and good company. Proceeds raised from the raffle and the stalls will go to Focus Ireland, founded by Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy from Lispole and towards the costs of running An Díseart.

The Christmas market is a great way to come together and enjoy the seasonal atmosphere and support local craft makers as well as Sister Stan’s life changing charity Focus Ireland.

A Cauldron of Goodness from the Witches’ Kitchen

Seasonal eating has become a buzzword for trendy chefs, but it was not too long ago that the Season dictated the menu of the day. Samhain which means “Summer’s End” celebrates the last harvest of the growing season and prepares us for the colder, darker days ahead. At this time of year, our ancestors took stock of what food was harvested, killed off any livestock deemed too weak or costly to survive the Winter and gathered any remaining crops or fallen fruit in the fields. It was considered taboo to eat anything left in the growing fields after the 31st of October, the festival of Samhain, and so was left to the Nature spirit and returned to the Earth. Between the slaughtered animals, the rotting crops and the tradition of remembering our dead, Samhain, had a deathly air about it that is, to some extent, mirrored in the modern-day celebration of Halloween. It is a pity that many of our cultural and spiritual connections with the Season and the land have been hijacked by consumerism and retail vulgarity. The food preparations and rituals enjoyed by our ancestors at Samhain prepared them both physically and emotionally for the long, dark Winter that lay ahead. Despite huge change, we are still faced today with similar health problems associated with the season that challenged our ancestors – colds, flus, tummy bugs, sadness and loneliness, but their traditions and timely preparations of seasonal ingredients and activities meant that communities back then shared good food and company which helped ease the uncertainty and hazards of the gloomier days and nights during Winter.

Samhain is the halfway mark between the Autumn equinox and the Winter Solstice. Although it was the end of the growing season, there were still many foods left to be enjoyed throughout the Winter. Traditional foods include nuts (hazels and chestnuts), apples, berries, potatoes, dark bread (rye), barley, cabbage, root vegetables, sea vegetables and a good selection of dried herbs - rosemary, mugworth, mullein, sage, bay and many others that were used in food and as medicines for the Winter season. The livestock that was slaughtered around Samhain, was respectfully prepared, dried or cured without any waste, to last throughout the season. Depending on where you lived and if you had land, game and fish were also on the menu and came in handy when meat supplies became scarce. The tradition and lore surrounding these foods are deeply rooted in the rituals and remedies of the season, many of which helped to keep us connected with the land and each other for the good of our health and well-being. Rosemary has long been associated with remembrance throughout the World. Ancient Greek and Roman scholars wore garlands of rosemary while studying as they knew it would help them remember and recall their studies. More recently, studies concluded that students who worked in a room with the aroma of rosemary oil achieved 30% greater results in memory tests. It is also the symbol of remembrance of our loved ones. At

Samhain, people hung a bunch of rosemary over the doorway in memory of their loved ones who had passed away. Many of the traditions associated with death during Samhain helped to process grief and reassure those left behind to let go of negative emotions associated with grief.

Apples had a central role on the Samhain table as they stored well and were still plentiful. Before they were ever slathered in toffee and sprinkles, apples were split in two and the formation of the seeds inside represented the five elements of life in Pagan times – Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether (Spirit), their position and presence bore significance, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, for the one who split the apple. Bobbing for apples and swinging the apple from a string are well-known Samhain games that are still with us today. As Samhain marked the end of the year, many rituals looked forward to the coming year and what fortune lay ahead, usually in love or in prosperity. One such ritual was to peel the apple, making one long piece from its skin. When it eventually breaks off, leave to drop on the ground. The letter it most resembles when it falls is likely to mark the initial of a future partner – no need for Tinder when Granny Smith is around!

At Samhain, it is believed that the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is at its thinnest. It is the best time to summon our ancestral spirits for advice and good news of the year ahead while warding off the evil ones with scary masks and Jack o’Lanterns. Turnips and mangles featured long before the pumpkin but again, some of today’s spooky faces hark back to when these tough vegetables were carved, lit and placed on a windowsill to ward off any dodgy or unwelcome spirits at Samhain. When Celtic pagans migrated to the US, they brought this tradition with them and were thrilled to discover the pumpkin, which were in season at Samhain yet much easier to carve!

The Pea: No marriage for you this year (refer back to the apple game)

The Bean: You will be prosperous and full of beans

The Coin: You will be wealthy and rich – beware of the one who got the Rag

The Ring: You will be wed this year and live happily ever after – well, at least until next year!

ACRES UPDATE

The €1.5 billion Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) has formally been opened to applications.

Farmers’ applications to ACRES can be submitted by their advisors up to the closing date of 21st November. This builds on the opening of the system in September for the preparation of the plans by advisers.

ACRES, which forms part of Ireland’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan for the period 2023-2027, has been designed to contribute significantly to achieving improved biodiversity, climate, air and water quality outcomes, through both multi-functional prescription and resultsbased actions. An underlying principle of ACRES is the location of the right action in the right place to maximise and enhance the contribution of actions to these objectives.

As of last week, the scheme is open for business. Much has been said about it, to date, but the bottom line is that it is the only show in town. Any advisors that are doing applications for clients (and all really should be) are working round-the-clock to ensure that all possible candidates get an application submitted to DAFM, be the closing date – 21st November. There will be little scope for advisors to take on extra clients, as they are busy, and looking after their own clients first.

This is your chance to increase your income stream by up ton €7,000 annually for the next 5 years. And if ACRES goes the way of GLAS, it may be extended, so could be for 7 years, but do not rely on this.

There are two streams for ACRES, Co-operation Zone Applicants and General Applicants. If you are in a Co-operation Zone area, you have little to do, if you have enough land within this zone. The term is a “shoe-in” but there are no shoe-ins, in this industry. Not all will get accepted for the first trance in 2022. It is envisaged that approximately 10,000 Cooperation applicants will be accepted in 2022, while a further 10,000 will be accepted in 2023.

Those in the General Area, will need to earn their acceptance into the scheme. Anyone with commonage will also get priority as they own and farm environmentally sensitive land. But those with no commonage must take on an extra option to improve their chance of access. The best and possibly most suitable option would be Wild Bird Food, whereby the farmer sows a combination of Oats/Barley/wheat with the likes of radish/ mustard/vetch/lucerne/etc. This must be planted by 15th May for each year of the contract.

This could be an ideal option, and will provide a benefit to our local birdlife – no harm.

Anyone thinking of joining should contact their advisor as soon as possible, and keep it simple. As you can see, time is of the essence. There is no point in complaining, as the Department of Agriculture is not for turning. They have decided to make things difficult for everyone, and give us all as little time as possible. Not is the time to move on.

One advisor recently said that he wants no “tyre-kickers”, so if you are not interested in the scheme, step aside and allow those interested in it to join. So, the advice is:- make your mind up if you are going to join, make that call to your advisor, and take his advice.

IS YOUR FARM READY FOR WINTER?

Now that the daylight hours are getting shorter, it’s time to ensure your farm is ready for winter. Good planning and preparation will help ensure your safety and the safety of others on the farm this winter.

Adequate lighting is invaluable, especially during the winter months when most activities are carried out during the dark evenings. You should only replace lights around the farm if you have a safe way of doing so. If not, it’s always best to call in a certified electrician who has the right safety equipment to carry out the work. When checking lights, make sure that all the fittings are at least splash-proof, IP44 and the protection level for fittings in milking parlours and dairies should be IP45. Check that all lights are working and that they provide adequate light.

It’s always a good idea to check how electrically safe your farmyard is. Electrical fittings can become damaged due to wear and tear and some electrical fittings are not suitable for the outdoors. Now is the time to have them repaired or replaced with fittings which have the correct IP ratings. Always use an electrical contractor for this work. Check that your RCD (Residual Current Device) is working correctly, both mechanically and electrically. This test button should be pressed at regular intervals, approximately once a month. Remember to reset the switch after testing. Also, remember that using portable electrical tools and equipment such as a power washer can cause electrocution. Always visually check that leads are not damaged. Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands or near water.

Farm buildings and facilities should be inspected regularly, especially before and after extreme weather conditions. For example, if roofs are subject to excessive weight, the joists can give way. In very heavy snowstorms accompanied by acute snow accumulation of roofs, it is advisable to monitor the roofs and observe the integrity of the joists and the roofing material. On foot of building inspections, maintenance and repair work should be carried out as appropriate. Remember, building maintenance work can be very dangerous, especially work at height and because of this, it is essential that all work is properly planned, organised, supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

Appropriate equipment for work at height should be carefully selected. Scaffolding and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms should be used as required. Never take chances and where necessary, employ a specialist contractor.

Keeping the farm tidy and free from clutter makes a huge difference in terms of safety. By making sure that the yard is tidy, you are ultimately reducing the likelihood of slips, trips and falls. Clear drains regularly, particularly in anticipation of stormy weather.

Farmers should be prepared for potential freezing and snowy conditions that the winter can bring. Ensure water supplies are protected by insulating exposed water pipes. During freezing conditions milking equipment must be fully drained down after milking and frost protection heaters should be provided to ensure that milking equipment does not freeze up. Ensure anti-freeze levels are adequate in farm vehicles and de-ice all windscreens and mirrors before operation. Remember to grit pathways and yard surfaces during icy spells, so as to prevent the risk of falls on icy surfaces.

Farming, by its very nature, is a physically demanding occupation. This can especially be the case during the winter months, when the housing of livestock can lead to increased workload around the farm, whether it be carrying meal bags, forking silage or rolling bales. Always plan work activities in order to avoid and reduce manual handling activities. Ask yourself if it can be done differently in order to eliminate the manual handling, or to minimise the distance travelled, the weight of the load, or the twisting movements required. Use manual handling aids where possible, get help if required and always use a safe lifting technique. Always think ‘safety first’ on the farm.

INHFA Meeting

There was an inaugural meeting of the Irish Natural Hill Farmers Association held in Dingle Mart, with over 50 attendees, and representatives from the Head Office in Tubbercurry Co Sligo presenting their plans for the future. The end of the night saw a new local branch established, and a troupe of well-capable officers elected. The new branch will be chaired by John Joe Fitzgerald, and we can only wish them all well in their endeavours.

We have a sports field here at last and the football club are deeply grateful to Revd. George O’ Callaghan, whose kind interest in the matter succeeded in getting the “fort field” for them. It was his intercession with the Christian Brothers and Mr. John Moran that led to such a happy result. The people of Dingle can never forget Fr. O’Callaghan’s plucky and sportsmanlike manner in this matter.

Having secured the field the Dingle Football Club intend to form a Sportsfield committee with the object of fencing round the field so that people would have to pay for admission and a hoarding will probably be erected along the Mail Road side, so that persons would be prevented from having a “look for nothing".

Football is now the rage in this district and the formation of a Sportsfield committee is a most laudable undertaking. But the initial expense will cost some money, which I am sure will be made up in one collection by the people of Dingle. It pays business people to contribute to such an object, as they are amply repaid by the great influx of people who visit the town on Sports’ days. Half a dozen of the leading men of Dingle, with yourself Mr. Kerryman would collect the necessary amount in a few hours. The undertaking is anything but a hair-brained one.

This month the Dingle Peninsula welcomed the Irish Cultural Centre of Western New England, a Sister City association, who is a keystone partner as part of the Dingle Peninsula Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase at The Big E every year. As part of An Turas Mór – a wonderful welcome, cultural presentation and tour with lunch was enjoyed by the group at Ionad an Bhlascaoid, coordinated by Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance. West Springfield friends included Baker’s, Boland’s, Murphy’s, Cahillane’s, and story of the day, went to Barbie Sayers with just a photo in hand, discovered that her grandparents, who both served in World War II as Irish immigrants in the US Army, had gotten married in Sáipéal Naomh Uinseann, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh! Ted Creedon

George Hoffman, 48, a farmer from Ballyandreen, near Annascaul, and his wife Annie, 44, had one of the largest families on the peninsula. Their eight daughters and four sons ranged in age from four to twenty. The family had one farm servant – John Lucy, 56.

Collins

Michael Collins, 45, and his wife Johannah, 40, lived in Murreagh and had ten children - eight sons and two daughters ranging in age from one month to twenty years. Michael and his sons John, 20, and Patrick, 18 were fishermen.

Manning

Thomas Manning, 49, and his wife Mary, 47, lived in Main Street, Dingle and they had eleven children – seven daughters and four sons ranging in age from five to twenty one. Thomas was a carpenter as were his sons John, 20, and James, 17.

Driscoll

Patrick Driscoll, 50, and his wife Bridget, 40, lived in Fahamore on the Maharees with their ten children – seven sons and three daughters. They ranged in age from three months to twenty years. They were a farming family.

O’Sullivan

Thomas O’Sullivan, 42, and his wife Johanna, 31, lived in Lisdargan, with their ten children – seven sons and three daughters. They ranged in age from three months to sixteen years. They were a farming family.

In the 1901 Census Lisdargan was in the parish of Cloghane and the District Electoral Division (D.E.D.) of Kinard.

Andrew Sayers, 55, and his wife Johanna, 41, lived in Lack with their eleven children – seven sons and four daughters. They ranged in age from one year to twenty-two years. They were a farming family and the majority spoke Irish and English.

Edward and Catherine Rayel, both aged 46, lived in Beenbawn, Dingle, with their eleven children – ten sons and one daughter. They ranged in age from six months to twenty-eight years. They were a farming family with fifteen people in the house including two servants – domestic and farm.

Murphy

Thomas Murphy, 48, and his wife Ellen, 45, lived in Ballyguin, near Brandon with their ten children – six sons and four daughters ranging in age from one year to twenty five years. The Murphys were a farming family.

Goggin

David Goggin, 48, and his wife Margaret, 44, lived in BallineanigCastlequarter (Marhin) with their twelve sons ranging in age from 6 months to twenty-two years. They were mainly a farming family but the eldest son, James, was a ‘Fisherman’.

McMahon

Brandon McMahon, 58, and his wife Mary, 50, lived in Glashabeg, near Feothanach with their eleven children – six daughters and five sons ranging in age from four years to twenty five years. They were a farming family.

Patrick Sugrue, 50, and his wife Margaret, 45, lived in Castlegregory with their ten children – six sons and four daughters ranging in age from eleven months to twenty five years. Patrick was a ‘Fisherman’ while Margaret recorded ‘Fishwoman’ in the occupation column of the census form.

Maurice Devane, 50, and his wife Catherine, 44, lived in Cloonties, Ballyferriter with their twelve children – seven daughters and five sons who ranged in age from six months to twenty one years. They were a farming family.

Fitzgerald

James Fitzgerald, 49, and his wife Ellen, 44, lived in Martramane (Castlegregory) with their eleven children – eight daughters and three sons who ranged in age from five years to twenty one years. James was a ‘Publican’.

Kevane

Thomas Kevane, 45, and his wife Mary, 40, lived in Reenboy with their ten children – six sons and four daughters who ranged in age from one year to twenty one years. The Kevanes were a farming family.

Edward O’Connor, 55, and his wife Kate, 48, lived in Kilcooly, near Carrig, with their eleven children – seven sons and four daughters who ranged in age from five years to twenty six years. This was a farming family. The eldest son, John, 26, was a ‘Postman’ and his brother Maurice, 25, was the ‘Parish Clerk’.

Note: in this group of fifteen families the total number of male children was 97 and the total number of female children was 65.

NATIONAL AWARD. Congratulations to the Chorca Dhuibhne Sustainable Energy Community on being recognised as the Most Influential in the Country at the recent SEAI Annual Ceremony. Operating since 2018 aiming to achieve climate action targets the Community are part of the Dingle Peninsula 2030 initiative and includes the Dingle Hub, ESB Networks, NEWKD, and MAREI. Dingle Bay Rovers Social takes place at the Dingle Sceilig Hotel on Saturday November 5th starting at 6.30 p.m. This thriving club are celebrating the official opening of their all weather pitch at Gallarus and tickets are available from Damien phone 0863816277. PEIL. Following their success in winning the County Division One Senior Football League 2022 the Dingle Seniors had a great run in the County Championship before bowing out in the semi final by an injury time point to favourites East Kerry. They have also qualified for the Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Championship Final which will be played within the next few weeks.

All the other underage teams are also doing very well this year including the ladies and girls teams.

The Win A Home in Dingle Draw was a tremendous success thanks to the huge effort put in by so many members and others at home and abroad

throughout the past 12 months. Let’s hope the planning and completion stages of the proposed Community Hub Facility can be progressed on schedule for a grand opening sometime in mid 2024.

YOUTH FACILITIES. We welcome the opening of the Dingle Youth Theatre who are looking for girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 18 interested in theatre opportunities. The group intend to meet in Aiseanna na hOige, Ard na Greine every Tuesday from 6.30 p.m. and for full details contact Sinéad on 0858387389 or email iarscoil@ aiseannanahoige.ie.

A number of readers have requested that we highlight the lack of facilities for the youth of the area in our town. Certainly there are very few suitable outlets readily available to provide regular indoor meeting places for teenagers at present . The Temperance Hall in Upper Main Street and the now defunct Bowling Alley Building off John Street have been mentioned as likely venues for youth drop-in centres. However any such venue will require parental involvement and adult supervision. Should enough interest be forthcoming the Business Chamber are willing to research and progress the idea as such facilities are urgently needed to steer our teenagers through the testing period in their lives.

SHOP LOCAL. Budget 2023 seems to provide welcome supports for many categories of our population including renters, parents, pensioners, health care, students and household energy bills.

However business outlets, particularly small and medium sizes operations are facing dealing with the repayment of taxes which were warehoused during Covid lockdown periods now falling due in full on January 1st 2023 along with increased rateable valuations. Such business operators are advised to seek advice from their financial or legal consultants before making arrangements with the revenue authorities.

We again appeal to our readers to Shop Local and support as many local producers, trades people and services as well as the retail outlets and hopefully all will survive what is being described as tough times ahead in most walks of life. Every euro we spend locally can benefit the whole local community in so many different ways and my ongoing reference to ensuring employment in West Kerry is more relevant than ever in these uncertain times.

Twenty-two lucky students from Meán Scoil nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory, had the trip of a lifetime as they headed to Toulon to meet their school exchange partners.

The trip was packed with activities ranging from attending a Toulon vs Brive rugby game, a cable car trip, watersports, trips to French markets, trampolining, a visit to the Mayor's officeas well attending school. They experienced the positives of a school exchange by experiencing French culture and speaking the language. The Castle students are looking forward to meeting their exchange partners next March when they will visit Meán Scoil and the area. The students were accompanied by teachers Carol O'Brien and Edel O'Connor who organised the trip.

This Week in History

The Society of United Irishmen was founded in a Belfast Pub on the 26th October 1791.

Founded by Theobald Wolfe Tone, James Napper Tandy, Thomas Russell and Belfast Presbyterians, their aim was to reform the government of Ireland on "principles of civil, political and religious liberty.

The United Irishmen took great inspiration from the ideals of the French and American War of Independence and believed that religion was used by those in power to cause a divide between the Irish people. They wanted to challenge this assumption and create a political system that included those of all religious persuasions. Amongst their aims was a desire for equal representation of all people in parliament.

They took to the printing and publishing world at first to spread their message, many pamphlets, newspapers and broadsheets were distributed.

As Britain went to war with France in 1793, The United Irishmen were banned by authorities. Their ideas had become popular and their support was growing. The British Goverment reverted to the use of terror to abolish the rising threat of the United Irishmen.

When the 1798 Rebellion took place, The main organising force was the Society of United Irishmen but within a short time most of the United Irishmen leaders had already been arrested, Wolfe Tone was arrested in October 1798 and later died in captivity.

The United Irishmen fell apart in 1803. Their hopes of a unity between the Catholic and Protestant religion also disappeared until it was rekindled in 1841 with the founding of the Young Ireland Movement which ultimately led to the Young Irelander rebellion of 1848 which was led by Thomas Francis Meagher.

In January 1847, Meagher, together with John Mitchel, William Smith O'Brien, and Thomas Devin Reilly formed a new repeal body, the Irish Confederation. In 1848, Meagher and O'Brien went to France to study revolutionary events there, and returned to Ireland with the new Flag of Ireland, a tricolour of green, white and orange made by and given to them by French women sympathetic to the Irish cause.

The design used in 1848 was similar to the present flag, except that orange was placed next to the staff, and the red hand of Ulster decorated the white field. This flag was first flown in public on 1 March 1848, during the Waterford by-election, when Meagher and his friends flew the flag from the headquarters of Meagher's "Wolfe Tone Confederate Club" at No. 33, The Mall, Waterford.

Following the incident Rebellion Meagher was arrested, tried and convicted for sedition. The sentence delivered was originally that he be ‘Hung Drawn and quartered’ but this was later reduced to transportation to Van Diemen's Land following many pleas for clemency.

As we lovingly remember and miss Paudie on his First Anniversary, his wife Mary, his daughters Neasa, Sheila and Nora, his son John, along with his sister Mary, his brother Tom, sister-in-law Maud, brother-inlaw Pat and their families wish to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with us on our very sad loss.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who wrote messages of sympathy on RIP.ie, who sent mass cards, letters of condolences and phoned us on the passing of our dear Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, and friend. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated.

To those who helped in so many ways, dropping food and refreshments at the house, to our neighbours and friends for all your kindness and support, we are truly grateful.

We give a special thanks to the ambulance services who tended to Paudie so quickly on the Sunday morning and to the doctors and nurses in University Hospital Kerry who took great care of Paudie during his short stay there.

Thank you to all those who attended the funeral service, provided guards of honour, gathered in the churchyard and at the graveside and to those who were present with us or watched the funeral mass online. A special thanks to all those who travelled long distances as we said our final goodbye to Paudie.

Our many thanks to Father Michael Moynihan, Father Sheehy and Father Begley who celebrated the funeral mass, Cathy Griffin, and Donal O’Connor Funeral Director and Malcom the grave digger for their help and professionalism.

We appreciate and are eternally grateful to everyone and as it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude.

TFI Local Link Kerry are currently working with the National Transport Authority designing new bus routes under the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority, with the aim of increasing connectivity, particularly for people living outside our major cities and towns.

TFI Local Link Kerry General Manager, Alan O’ Connell said: “it is a very positive time to be involved in public transport. There are some exciting public transport developments on the horizon for the county through the Connecting Ireland plan. I can safely say that these new routes will be transformative and will provide access for people with jobs, education, training, healthcare, shopping, recreation and tourist facilities. In May 2022, Public Transport services saw a reduction in the cost of fares of an average of 20% as well as a 50% saving for students and it has been confirmed by Government that these savings will continue for 2023.

Congratulations to seven Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh students who were presented with their Bronze Gaisce Awards (Presidents Awards) recently. These students had to complete many tasks from personal development to community volunteering in order to fulfill the criteria for the awards. The awards were presented to them by past pupil Dr Katie O'Dwyer who lectures in Environmental and Marine Science at ATU Galway. The students were guided through the whole process by TY co-ordinator John O'Callaghan.

It’s been another busy fortnight for all things Dingle Hub, especially for our farmers in our Creative Climate Action project: Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe.

25/10/’22 We hosted the latest Kerry Hubs get together in Dingle, showing our colleagues from other Hubs across the region our approach to helping our community. We shared with them ways they can cut down their energy bills.

We are chuffed that Shamrock Squad Adventures is CEAI’s Champion Changemakers! We’re pleased too that they credit the mentorship (including from Tanya Moore and Deirdre de Bhailís via Dingle Hub) helped refine their idea and pitch.

This passionate squad gave rare insight into the high percentage of families who have members with extra needs. The challenges these families face in undertaking activities in the great outdoors could be massively reduced with the aspirations of Shamrock Squad Adventures. We highly anticipate what changes they will bring to our communities over the next year and beyond.

20/10/’22 Corca Dhuibhne farmers go on a trip to MidKerry and take in some of the McGillycuddy Reeks to see what the local farmers are doing there to improve the ecological condition of their upland and bog habitats.

22/10/’22 Tom Greaney of Annascaul pictured in Dublin at Earth Rising - an Eco Art Festival held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. He along with more farming families from Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe travelled by train to the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) to talk about the artwork behind him. Last month at the Ploughing Championships they helped create this drawing (the future they would like to see) with our embedded artist Lisa Fingleton. Tom and co. also participated in a vibrant discussion where he sought to understand the perception of farmers.

Tommy Griffin Over 35's Football Tournament

Saturday 12th November.

The Tommy Griffin Over 35's football tournament returns to Dingle on Saturday November 12th.

The tournament will host 23 teams with each team guaranteed a least two games.

Among the participating teams will be local teams Dingle and Lios Póil as well as a Kerry masters team, outfits of over 35's from Cork and Kildare, Dr. Crokes, UCD, St. Vincents and a team from Liffré (France).

Games will be 13 a side with rolling subs during breaks in play and will last 15 minutes a half.

The tournament will be played in Páirc an Ághasaigh and the Pobalscoil pitch

Joe McGill's Saturday Supplement was the recipient of 2 IMRO Radio awards recently in The Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny.

The Moving on Womens Project NEWKD magazine programme was among the recipients of an award.

Congratulations to Collette Scanlon, Cappaclough and all her colleagues who produced and presented the show live on Radio Kerry. A great achievement, well done all.

CHARITY CYCLE

Congratulations to Tom Moriarty from our neighbouring parish of Castlegregory on an amazing feat of strength and endurance.

Tom cycled from Malin to Mizen to raise funds for those affected by the Creeslough tragedy.

Well done Tom on reaching out to Creeslough in their darkest hour, a wonderful act of kindness.

The New Guinness Book of World Records might be the perfect stocking filler for many of us in the Annascaul parish this Christmas..

The Hickson family from Lougher, Eamonn, Jason, Susan and Nathan have an entire section of the book devoted to them and their amazing feats of strength and endurance are documented for posterity. Congratulations and well done, you have done all of us proud.

OBITUARY

Margaret Deane (nee O’Shea) of Beheenagh, Camp, Tralee and formerly of Listry, Co. Kerry, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, on 10th October, beloved wife of Pádraig and dear mother of Anthony, Laura and Jonathan.

Sadly missed by her loving family, sisters

Gerardine, Maura and Deirdre, brothers Kevin and Denis, uncles Dinny and Christy, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

A veil of sadness descended on the village at the news on Monday that Margaret Deane had passed away.

A beautiful person, caring, kind, vivacious and stylish and inspirational in her positive attitude to life, always smilling and in good humour.

Margaret touched the lives of so many people, in her nursing life and in the community of Camp, she will be greatly missed.

Laura and Jonathan in their beautiful tribute to their mother said it all, concluding in Margarets own words " We love you to the moon and back"

Indeed sentiments shared amongst her wide circle of friends, neighbours and work colleagues.

Ní bheidh a léithéid arís ann. After concelebrated requiem at St. Marys Church on Thursday Margaret was laid to rest in Camp Cemetary.

Her funeral was huge and representative of the esteem in which she was held

The

Brigid is a lifelong farmer from Camp where she runs an organic sheep farming system. Brigid breeds 120 scotch ewes on 54 hectares. The farm is made up of 3 different land types – permanent pasture, heath and commonage. The farm is very extensively managed with minimal external inputs. The family have farmed the land for generations and Brigid is proud to carry on traditional methods of farming handed down to her from her parents and grandparents – “Growing up on a farm, you learn from your parents and your grandparents. I remember my grandfather teaching me things about sheep and it is knowledge that I still use today”. Brigid acknowledges and respects the high nature value of the land she farms, and its importance from a wildlife and biodiversity perspective. The land has never been reseeded and is managed is the most natural and low-impact manner possible. The bog contains a wonderful array of wildflowers including the rare Kerry Violet. There is a healthy population of pheasant nesting on the farm and the Hen Harrier is frequently seen overhead. Brigid diversified by the farm by running farm tours where she explains the history of the land and the importance of the farmland habitats. She was also recently involved the launch of the book “The beauty of the bogs of Kerry”. Brigid has a deep love for the land she cares for and sees herself as a custodian of the land.

Margaret Kennedy who is a great friend of Annascaul wishes to do a portrait exhibition of the residents of the village. She has long been a visitor to the village where she has many relations in Abhainn an Scáil. Her art and photography has been shown in numerous centres in the county over the years . Margaret's next project is to photo people in Annascaul in the local setting where they work from.

Her work is very light, interesting, fresh and often humorous She is looking for those that might be interested in getting involved. She will reach out to business people in the village, farmers, beauticians, doctors, nurses, artists, shop owners, church representatives, cafes, bars , B&Bs, engineers, postmen, teachers, GAA players and management, home care workers, schools etc. Feel free to get in contact at 086-8035464 if you wish to be involved in this wonderful idea. Special thanks you to Annascaul Adventures, Annascaul Historical Society and to An Turas Mor that were involved with the Annascaul Historical and Images Festival that was hosted in Annascaul Oct 14-16. The event went well the historical event was hosted at Hanafin's Bar and Patcheen's Bar and Annascaul Cafe. The fire show was incredibly well attended as were the historical events. The raffle prize was sponsored by West Kerry Brewery and the winner was Eileen Tracey / Moriarty from Bally David. The event raised €200 which will go towards the historical placks that are arranged as paving stones in the village later this year. This October bank holiday Annascaul Historical Society invite you to join them on a guided walk through the countryside south of the village. Starting along the old butter road, where once the hedge school master taught his little school, hear tales of evictions, deserted villages, vanished industries and ways of life. Learn of dark deeds in the black orchard, the widow's curse, smugglers' cove, moonlight raids and shipwrecks.

The walk, led by Justin McCarthy and John Hanafin, will take place on Monday 31 October. Registration will be at Hanafin's Bar on Annascaul's Main Street from 11.00 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11.30. Prices are €5 for an individual and €10 for a family. The walk with its many information points should take about two and a half hours.

The money raised will contribute to the cost of the inscribed Coiscéim na Staire flagstones being placed in the village footpath. These will mark, with text and images, the locations of the various trades and activities of this outstanding example of a typical nineteenth century rural village.

This is part of the upgrade of the N86: the historical society are working in conjunction with the National Road Design Office and with the help of South Kerry Development Partnership Leader funding.

Mid Kerry Minor Football Shield Championship Final: Milltown/Castlemaine's Minors (U-17s) took on Glenbeigh/Glencar/ Cromane on Sunday last at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown in the Final of the Mid Kerry Shield. After a fascinating battle between two great teams, our lads came out the wrong side of a three point game, losing 2-14 to 2-11.

Whilst it wasn't the end to the 2022 season which these players would have hoped for, these players have done the club proud throughout the year, playing a total of 20 games which included 4 finals. Special thanks to the management team and the parents also for their efforts over the last number of months.

Garvey's Supervalu County Senior Football Championship: Final Best wishes to the Mid Kerry Senior Football team and management especially our own club representatives in Pa Wren, Eanna O'Connor, Gavin Horan, David Roche, Garry Murphy (Selector), Shane O'Sullivan (Strength and Conditioning) and Liam Doherty (Stats) who will meet East Kerry in the Garvey's Supervalu County Senior Football Championship Final on Sunday, October 30th at 2:15pm in Austin Stack Park, Tralee. There will be a replay the following weekend if the sides are tied at the end of normal time.

For those unable to attend, the match will be Live on TG4 and also on Radio Kerry Sport.

Mid Kerry GAA: Show Your Support

As the day of the County Senior Football Final approaches the Mid Kerry Board are asking all clubs and supporters across the district to display the team colours in support of the team and management.

All six clubs in the district are represented on the team and they have done us all proud with their performances to date.

Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship: Quarter-Final and Semi-Final Draw

Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior side will take on Cromane in the opening round of the 2022 Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship following the draw which took place recently at Bunkers Bar & Restaurant, Killorglin. The other quarterfinal will see Glenbeigh/Glencar host Keel. Laune Rangers await the winners of Milltown/ Castlemaine and Cromane in the Semi-Final whilst on the opposite side, Beaufort will play the winners of Glenbeigh/Glencar and Keel.

No dates or times have yet been confirmed for any of the games as Mid Kerry are involved in the Garvey's Supervalu County Senior Football Championship Final which will take place this weekend against East Kerry.

GAA 4 All: End of Season Awards Ceremony

Last Wednesday night we had a fantastic evening at the Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Grounds when our amazing GAA 4 ALL team received their well earned medals.

The players also made and signed thank you cards for all their amazing coaches, we could not run this group without the amazing volunteer coaches and would like to sincerely thank them all for their hard work all throughout the year. We will be sending out the remaining cards and medals in the weeks ahead.

Thank you also to the parents of our players for bringing them to training each week and to our amazing junior coaches too for helping out.

What’s next? We are sincerely grateful to the club and the organising group of the Annual U11 Blitz in September. The event raised over €2,500 for our group which will go towards specified equipment and specific coaches training courses for our GAA for ALL group. We also plan to send out skills videos throughout the winter month that our players can practice. Then in the new year we intend to get ready for the year ahead by recruiting more coaches, training the coaches and recruiting new players too, make sure to contact us on this FB page if you have any questions.

A sincere thank you to all who helped out this year, from coaching to organising, from fundraising to helping with behind the scenes work, many hands make light work and we are all so grateful to you all for being part of our amazing group.

Celeriac, Potato and Turnip Gratin

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

Ingredients

500ml cream

4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

some thyme leaves, picked and chopped finely ½ celeriac, peeled and sliced

3-4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced finely

1 large turnip, sliced finely and cut into discs 100g Coolea cheese, grated (you can use a good cheddar either)

100g breadcrumbs

20g butter, cubed salt

Method

Start by infusing the cream. To do this put a pot over a medium heat, add the cream and some salt, thyme and garlic. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Keep an eye on it so it does not boil over. Turn it off and leave to infuse for about 20 minutes.

Humble ingredients getting the centre of attention.

What is comfort food? At this time of year, I feel it is the warm aroma of food cooking slowly, it is anything being cooked with cream, butter or red wine, it is something that when it is served it makes everyone hungry. This gratin fits in here so well. The flavours and smells of the cream with the garlic as it is infusing is just the start of it. Then when it comes out of the oven with warm cream bubbling under the breadcrumb and melted cheese crust, it will require willpower not to dig in straight away.

Serve this with some roast chicken. It is rich, but if this is part of your Sunday dinner, I would suggest to serve a green salad to cut through the richness. It still will be comfort food even with a salad. I hope you enjoy it.

War Of Independence Ambush The Focus Of New Stage Play

The dramatic story of the IRA ambush of members of the Crown Forces near Milltown in 1921 is being presented as a new play in the local Community Hall this November. Ballymacandy is based on the best-selling book by local historian and author Owen O’Shea and involves a cast of almost thirty locals, all of whom live near where five RIC and Black and Tans were killed on 1 June 1921, just six weeks before the end of Independence.

Tickets for the highly anticipated play which is written by Owen O’Shea and directed by Mike O’Halloran are now on sale and can be booked online at www.owenoshea.ie. The play will run for five nights during the first two weeks of November on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th, all at 8.00pm.

“As with the book, the play attempts to portray these events from all of the different perspectives, those of the IRA and Cumann na mBan, the RIC and Black and Tans, as well as the perspectives of local civilians in Milltown and Castlemaine who were caught up in the events. The ambush involved IRA men from the locality as well as from Tralee, Castlegregory and Keel so we hope the play will have a wide appeal,” said Owen O’Shea.

“Rehearsals have been going now for months and the cast, most of whom have never been on stage before, have put an enormous amount of work into the preparations. They have really embraced the story and have been moved to portray events based on the evidence we have about what actually happened.”

Owen said that after the pandemic, there is also a great sense of excitement about a local community initiative which will bring people together again, in this case, to present our local history in a new way.

Among those killed in the ambush was RIC sergeant, James Collery, who lived in Milltown and left a wife and eight young children, and whose story is portrayed in the play. Also told is the story of the local IRA members like Jack Flynn and Dan Mulvihill and the members of Cumann na mBan, many of whom were on the receiving end of the violence of the rampaging Black and Tans.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

Layer half of the celeriac, potato and turnip slices in a large ovenproof dish, pour some of the infused cream liquid over this, then season with salt. Continue to layer the celeriac and turnip and the liquid until all of the ingredients have been used up. Finish by pouring the liquid over the top. Cover the dish with tin foil and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes. Remove the foil and scatter the cheese and breadcrumbs over the creamy dish. Turn the oven down to 150ºC and put the dish back in for another 30 minutes.

“Writing the play was a challenge because these were real people and not fictional characters,” said Owen, “but thanks to the directing skills of Mike O’Halloran and the professionalism of such a great cast, I think we will do the story great justice.”

The play will run on Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th, Saturday 5th, Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November at the Muintir na Tíre Hall in Milltown. Doors at 7.00pm. Ticket collection by 7.30pm and show at 8.00pm.

COUNTY SFC: Best of luck to the Mid Kerry seniors (including our own Darren Houlihan) who play East Kerry in next Sunday’s County SFC Final. The game is on in Austin Stack Park, Tralee, with a 2.15pm throw-in time.

Cromane’s Darren Houlihan has lined out at midfield in every game, chipping in with some vital scores throughout the campaign. Best of luck in the final, Darren.

Good luck also to the management team, which includes our senior team trainer Garry McGrath, as they prepare for the final.

MID KERRY SFC: The draw for the Mid Kerry SFC took place last week in sponsors Bunker’s Bar, Killorglin. Cromane were drawn out against Milltown-Castlemaine in the preliminary round with the winners playing Laune Rangers in the semi-final. The other side of the draw sees Glenbeigh-Glencar taking on Keel with the winners playing Beaufort. Dates, venues, and times to be confirmed.

GGC MINORS: Mid Kerry Minor Football Championship Shield Final: Glenbeigh-Glencar/ Cromane (GGC) 2-14, Milltown-Castlemaine 2-11 Well done to the GGC minors, winners of the Mid Kerry Shield after a 2-14 to 2-11 win over Milltown-Castlemaine on Sunday in Milltown. Captain Liam O’Neill collected the shield on behalf of the team and Jack McGrath was named man of the match.

A date for the diary last week the launch took place of Celtic Steps Night which will take place on the 12th November in the Sports Hall in Glenbeigh with all proceeds going to two great causes the Air Ambulance and in memory of Brendan Teahan the LifeBoat in Valentia. Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then trans ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

The New Year, 2022 was welcomed all around the world with much jubilation. And from near and far, greetings and messages of goodwill were shared at home and online, through different social media at the dawn of a new year at various times in different hempispheres. Irish people in Seattle celebrate the Irish New Year at 4.00 p.m, outside Murphy's Irish Pub in the snow.

Musician Emmett from Tyrone sings Auld Lang Syne after many Irish rendeerings, with even Dingle Bay thrown in for the Kerry people to welcome in the New Year.

And at midnight American time, people gather to experience a spectacular fireworks display at The Space Needle, tallest historic building in Seattle, the city known as the Emerald city in the Evergreen State of Washington.

A world in anticipation of better times to come has welcomed a new year with hope and joy.

NEW BEGINNINGS

History was made in 2021! A very enthusiastic and sporting group of young women formed a Camp United Ladies football team. Winning the first 3 games played against strong opposition teams, they are really making their mark on the Kerry Football circuit.

It is now well over 50 years since the first ever Camp Ladies Camogie made their mark too and some players went on to play for Kerry at the time.

Another bit of history from the past - Maureen O'Shea, Dwyer, Camp Camogie is grandmother of Amelia O Regan, our shining star in Munster Rugby.

Fuair Hilda Ní Chaoimh ón nDaingean bás i mBleá Cliath ar an 18ú lá don mí seo. Bhí sí ag obair ar feadh blianta sa mhór chathair. Bean shocair cháirdiúil. Cuireadh taisí an Ath Pádraig Ó Murchú ón mBhaile Loisce i Sean Reilig Chill Maolcéadair ar an Satharn seo caite, tréis Aifrinn i Séipéal na Carraige. Bhí Pádraig in ord na gColmbánach sa Choraí Theas ait a deireadh sé a thaithn go mór leis. Is beag aoise a bhí eadrainn agus bhí an- aithne agam ar Phádraig.

Scríg sé go leor go mór mhór an leabhar ‘Idir dhá Shaol’, leabhar eolach slachtmhar. Bhí meas ag an saol mór ar an Ath Pádraig. An –chainteoir, ach níorbh aon bhleadarálaí é.
