What are they?

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages?

They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs.

What can you do if you find one?

Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again.

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it.

Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Fuelling your Lungs for Autumn Wellness

Autumn, the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” as John Keats described it way back in September 1819 and it still remains a fitting description. Despite dramatic climate events in recent times, there has been a definite seasonal shift in the last couple of weeks. In Autumn, Earth energy begins its journey downwards, shifting from the high of Summer to the low of Winter. In between, we really experience two seasons, Late Summer and Autumn, but our modern calendars say otherwise. With each of the five seasons, different organ systems are nourished through the food in season, the weather outside, our natural environment and our innate ability to go with the flow. It is widely accepted in Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine that to truly attune with the seasons is the best prevention of all disease, discord and disharmony!

Earth energy moves along in a cyclical manner throughout the year and as it flows through us during Autumn it nourishes and tonifies our Lungs. Now is the best time to give those airbags some TLC, they work hard, taking up to 25,000 breaths a day! For many Irish people lung health is a struggle. We have the 4th highest prevalence of Asthma in the World with almost one in ten people suffering from this chronic condition. We are also high in the rankings for lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Throw into the mix bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal allergies and it becomes very apparent that our lungs are besieged and in desperate need of help!

The foods in season during Autumn nourish the Lungs and their related organs - the eyes and large intestine. Betacarotene-rich foods such as carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin will soon be at their best. The orange pigment of these vegetables is due to betacarotene, a flavonoid most beneficial to the linings of the intestines, nose, the airways and lungs, offering strength and support to their integrity and also an important nutrient to eye health. Supporting these organs now, will offer resistance to the bugs and viruses typically associated with this time of year – tummy bugs, flus, colds, respiratory viruses and chest ailments.

Flavours associated with Autumn are pungent - bay leaves, capers, caraway seeds, cardamom, chives, cinnamon, cloves, cumquats, dill, fennel, leek, oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, watercress, wheat germ, cabbage, turnip, ginger, horseradish, pepper, onions, garlic and chillies. These foods are drying, complementing the season and helping to reduce dampness in the body which is a precursor to most respiratory

and gastrointestinal infections. Of course, it is not a surprise that these flavours also complement the foods of the season and prepares us for the heartier cooking of the Winter months.

Beans, seeds and nuts added to slow-cooked meals provide omega 3, magnesium and B vitamins. Omega 3 is well-known for its antiinflammatory properties and used widely for joint and heart health. It also helps to reduce allergy mechanisms which trigger asthma and improves linings of the eyes, respiratory tract and the digestive tract. Eskimo people have a low prevalence of all lung disease and this is mainly due to the high intake of omega 3 through fish oil and blubber found in their native diet. Magnesium is particularly beneficial to lungs as it helps to dilate airways and relax the muscles around the bronchi thus reducing spasms associated with Asthma. Researchers also found a significant association between high blood levels of folic acid and a 30% reduced risk in inflammatory proteins, 40% reduced risk in wheezing, 31% reduced risk of having atopy and 16% reduced risk in asthma compared to those with the lowest levels of folic acid. Black beans and dark green/black lentils are a wonderful source of dietary folic acid. Other great foods for the lungs, and indeed the eyes and large intestine include dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and dark skinned fruits (like blackberries and plums) – all of which make a perfect meal for Autumn days!

A common belief is that dairy foods increase mucus production and should be avoided in those with chronic respiratory disorders. However, the research surrounding this is sketchy and confusing to say the least. What is mucus anyway but phlegm, and what does phlegm do? It acts as a lubricant to help food pass through your digestive system, and it traps bacteria, viruses, pollen, dust and mould in your lungs to keep you healthy. Under normal circumstances, food should not make you produce more phlegm. However, if you have a food allergy or consume a food that causes your body to produce histamine, your body may react by increasing phlegm production… so is histamine the problem? And round we go again. If you suspect dairy foods make your symptoms worse, eliminate and see if it makes a difference. At the end of the day, the foods mentioned earlier provide the nutrients to support the integrity of respiratory linings, without question. Dairy foods, even if they are now not considered the problem, there are not the solution either.

One food that certainly makes matters worse is salt. Salt encourages fluid retention which can make breathing more difficult. Use a little real sea salt in cooking if needed but avoid adding salt to meals at the table as well as restricting salty foods, deli meats and processed foods. Interestingly, salt therapy and saline rinsing of the nose have shown great benefits to lung and respiratory health and offer the best use of salt for anyone with respiratory disorders. Breathing techniques such as Buteyko improve the outcome of many respiratory diseases and warrant inclusion in the overall management of lung disease. More recently, I heard about “SingSong” through www.copd.ie – a breathing and singing programme for those with COPD and other chronic respiratory problems which can be accessed in the comfort of your own home – well worth checking out.

The bottom line is that there is a reason for every season, and whether you have an existing respiratory condition or want to reduce your risk, the foods and flavours of Autumn are there to help, so eat up and breathe easy.

STEPS TO CONSIDER WHEN CONVERTING TO ORGANIC

With approximately 2,000 farmers to begin a conversion to an organic sheep system this year, there are many steps that must be considered for the transition. The increase in payment rates for the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) 2023, and a reduction in the minimum stocking rate required has led to an almost doubling of organic farmers in Ireland. The increase of farmers entering organics this year will prove to be a easier transition for certain types of farmers, depending on their location and their enterprise when compared with others.

In all cases, it is important to check if establishing an organic enterprise will have any implications on the ACRES payment for the farm. For a conversion to organics, farmers must first carry out a soil test and improve the pH levels on their land if necessary.

For hill sheep farms, commonage can be grazed by sheep once they are properly hefted, but the commonage area is not eligible for payment under the Organic Farming Scheme. Farmers converting to organics must be aware of the changes they will be faced with regarding treating their sick animals. The conversion plan must include a flock health element to be prepared in consultation with a veterinary surgeon. It must outline a system that is less dependent on veterinary medicines. Routine use of antibiotics is not permitted, but in clinical cases, they may be prescribed by a vet. Animal welfare is always the priority. The plan will take account of farm history and will describe how to tackle health issues during conversion.

For the breeding systems on an organic sheep farm, farmers should aim to breed replacements from within the flock. Rams may also be sourced from non-organic breeders. Out-wintering is permitted once carried out extensively, and providing that no poaching occurs.

30% OF IRISH ORGANIC CATTLE ARE SOLD TO NON-ORGANIC FARMERS

At present, approximately 30% of the organic cattle sold in Ireland are ending up in conventional beef-finishing systems, according to the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA). The main reason why so many organic cattle are being bought by conventional finishers is due to price. The conventional (weanling and store cattle) prices, especially for the higher grade of cattle, is the same or maybe better. However, one organic producer at a recent farm walk gave his opinion and argued that organic beef finishing is much more profitable than conventional beef finishing, where farmers are growing their own crops and using them for finishing cattle.

If you have to pay €50 to transport an animal from the South of Ireland to marts or factories in Cahir or Clones (the organic cattle processing facilities) the extra bit you’re getting is gone. Its the same with the lambs. In the South West a lot of organic sheep farmers just sell their lambs as stores and do not look into getting them to an organic farm to finish them. The prime cause of the number of organically produced animals ending up in conventional finishing systems is that the organic premiums are not high enough.

There are currently approximately 20,000 organic cattle slaughtered in Ireland annually while Bord Bia is working to ensure there are new markets available for the extra organic Irish beef and lamb that will be coming available in the near future. Organic lamb prices are generally 15% higher than the conventional lamb price. But we need a 52-week supply of product to ensure the further development of organic Irish beef and lamb markets and said this is a key demand of organic beef and lamb buyers on mainland Europe. We there fore also need a more widespread Organic Market and network to ensure that organic livestock production is viable.

MULTI-SPECIES SWARD AND RED CLOVER SILAGE MEASURE APPLICANTS

Eligible applicant’s under the Multi-Species Sward and Red Clover Silage Measures can now up-load their claims for payment. Applicants must have declared the appropriate crop-code for the respective parcel on their

2023 BISS application. In addition, supporting documents in the form of invoices and seed labels must be up-loaded to Agfood.ie to support the claim for payment. To ensure eligible applicants, have sufficient time to up-load their documentation, the closing date for receipt of claims has been extended to midnight on Friday the 29th of September 2023. Only seed purchased after the applicant’s expression of interest to participate in the respective measure was lodged on Agfood.ie and before the final date for sowing the crop, 15th of July 2023, can be considered eligible for aid under each of these Measures. The Multi-Species Sward and Red Clover Silage Measure opened for applications in April of this year, with a budget of €2.5 million.

A payment rate of up to €300/ha is being allowed, which represents a significant increase in the rate of aid paid last year and is part of the Government’s response to meeting increased input costs.

NEW LEGISLATION TO PROTECT DOGS FROM EAR CROPPING

This applies to everyone, farmer and the general public. Cropping of dogs’ ears is an unnecessary, cruel practice that has no place in Ireland. This procedure causes severe pain and lifelong problems for dogs. Cropping of dogs’ ears has been illegal in Ireland since 2013. These new regulations will extend existing prohibitions on ear cropping, to protect dogs across Ireland from this unjustifiable and needless mutilation. Those who practice this would not like it, if this were done to them!

From the 1st of September 2023, it will be illegal for a person to be in possession, or have control, of a dog that has had all, or part, of its ears removed after this date (1st September), unless the person has in their possession the necessary documentation. Depending on the circumstances, the required documentation may be an import licence, a veterinary certificate or a record issued by an animal welfare charity. It will be illegal to import into Ireland a dog with cropped ears unless an import licence is granted in advance. The sale or supply of dogs with cropped ears (other than by listed animal welfare charities) will also be prohibited. The new regulations also address availability of so-called “DIY dog ear cropping kits”, which can be used to carry out this mutilation. Possession, sale or supply of such equipment will be restricted to veterinary practitioners or their suppliers. These regulations also prohibit owners or occupiers of land or premises in which shows, competitions, sporting or cultural events are held from having dogs with cropped ears present at such events.

SI 412 of 2023 (Ear-Cropping of Dogs Regulations 2023) will come into force on 1st September 2023. Under the 2013 Animal Health and Welfare Act, ear cropping was already illegal other than where ear tissue is removed by a veterinary practitioner for the purposes of veterinary treatment. A list of animal welfare charities approved to rehome dogs with cropped ears following their rescue will be published.

LIMING PROGRAMME BUDGET DOUBLED

According to released figures, €8 million was initially provided for the National Liming Programme, while applications were received for in excess of €85 million. Some things just don’t add up!! This increase brings the budget for the scheme to €16m, a 100% increase on the original €8m allocated to the scheme in Budget 2023, well short of the required figure. The budget increase will facilitate approval for up to 40 tonnes of lime per eligible applicant, again well short of the initial proposal. All eligible applicants will shortly receive a Letter of Approval from the Department confirming their eligible tonnage of lime, and again, this is a much delayed reply to the needs of farmers. Aid will be paid at a rate of €16 per tonne of ground limestone delivered and spread. To qualify for payment, all ground limestone purchased under this measure must meet the specifications set down in S.I. No. 248/1978: The ground limestone must be purchased directly from a licenced quarry. A list of licenced quarries is available at Trade, Imports & Exports: Fertilisers and Limestone. Valid soil samples must be available to show the need to correct soil pH (maximum of 4 years old from date of purchasing the lime).

FERTILIZER DATABASE REGISTRATION

Everyone by this stage should have received a letter from DAFM stating that they must register on the DAFM Fertilizer Database by 1st September. This is a requirement to allow them know exactly how much fertilizer each individual farmer purchases in a calendar year. Another case of “Big Brother watching you”. It may be gone past 1984, but for farming,

the restrictions certainly make Mr Orwell’s fictional novel more real than we expected.

However, there is not much required to register on this database, and all Farm Advisors will have registered all their clients on it, at this stage. Once registered, all you need to do is quote your herd number to your merchant/supplier, and he can sell fertilizer to you. If you don’t do this, he can’t sell. Simple as that.

Farmers will be required to declare closing fertiliser stock on their farm by 14th September (the end of the fertiliser spreading period). Farmers will have until October 15, to make this declaration.

HEDGE-CUTTING SEASON APPROACHES

Farmers have been urged to get their chainsaws and hedge-cutting machinery serviced and ready to go for the hedge-cutting season from September 1. The cutting season is now upon us, with the current ban on burning land and cutting hedges due to expire next month. Under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, the cutting, grubbing, burning or other destruction of “vegetation growing in any hedge or ditch” is illegal between March 1 and August 31, annually. There are some exemptions to the ban, including trimming hedges “in the ordinary course of gardening”, the clearance of vegetation for road or construction works and cutting hedges to improve road safety.

This season will be a busy time for landowners as it is clear to see that many hedges and ditches need to be cut back. Due to the “very challenging” ash dieback problem which can be found in most roadside vegetation boundaries, trees will need to be felled in certain circumstances. Landowners are asked to be mindful of health and safety, particularly around the use of heavy hedge-cutting machinery. Landowners and farmers are also urged to make sure they only use fully insured personnel if cutting and clearance work on their farm is carried out by a contractor.

1911 Census Miscellany in West Kerry

Here we go again - a second look at some unusual first names, rare items, errors and questionable information from the 1911 Census. Coonels.

There was a 30 year-old fisherman named Coonels Brosnan living in Quay Lane, Dingle, in 1911, according to the Census. There’s no doubt but that the name is clearly written, not smudged or illegible.

Coonels as a first name is not only rare but appears to be completely unknown. The name does not ring a bell on any website. Why didn’t Constable Long, the enumerator, question it? Why did he allow it if it doesn’t have legal standing or recognition in an official document? Did he check the form at all?

It’s possible this was a pet name for somebody named Cornelius. A look at the 1901 Census for Quay Lane shows a Cornelius Brosnan aged 20. OK. Let’s move on. Delby.

Another unusual name, but not unknown, is Delby. In this instance it was the first name of a woman in Fahamore, Maharees in 1911. Delby Deen, 65, was married to farmer John Deen, 67. They had been married for 32 years and had five children.

There are numerous websites that proclaim to know the origin of the name but that’s just a hook. When opened they admit to not knowing the origin but can offer you other so-called attractive options – ‘Come into my parlour’, said the spider to the fly.

There is a parish in New South Wales, Australia, named Delby and a Canadian writer named Delby Powless – but the name is very rare. Sunney.

There were three Ashe brothers living in Aughils (Lack) in 1911. The eldest was Gregory, 51, followed by Timothy, 34, and then Sunney, 19, with a 32year gap between him and Gregory. There were no other people in the house on Census night.

The name Sunney is rare but it is found in North America. Between the years 1980 and 2019 one child, a girl, was recorded in Canada with the name Sunney. Was Sunney Ashe baptized with that name? Loretto.

Loretto O’Connor, 11, lived with her aunt Bridget Coakley, 28, in Castlegregory. An unusual first name, the normal spelling is with one ‘t’. It is also a man’s first name and surname. Loreto is a small town in eastern Italy, on the Adriatic coast and is famous as a place of pilgrimage.

There is a house shrine there which was once in Palestine. According to legend the house was the home of the Virgin Mary and it was where the Angel Gabriel visited her. The house was miraculously transported to Loreto, by the angels, to protect it from destruction during the Crusades, or so the legend goes.

In 2019 Pope Francis announced that the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto would be one of those to be celebrated on December 10th, in the Roman calendar.

Quirke.

There was a Quirke family living in the Commons of Milltown, Dingle, in 1911. John Quirke, 60, had been married to Mary, 48, for six years and they had three children.

But the census form records there were seven children in the household, two boys and five girls with the eldest being 19 years of age. John was the father of all the children. No great mystery here – obviously John had married for a second time.

Cathiloc.

In our last issue we had an item about a family who were all recorded as being ‘Catlicks’ in the 1911 Census – here’s another version of that. The Manning family lived in Caherboshina, Glin. John Manning, 64, and his wife Mary, 42, had been married for 27 years. Their union had produced seven children and five were still living.

In the census form column marked ‘Religious Profession’ somebody wrote ‘Cathiloc’. Why didn’t the enumerator, Constable Thomas Reidy, correct the spelling? John Manning didn’t sign the Census form – it was signed by the constable. Whoever transcribed the hand-written form to print did correct the mistake.

Latchford

There is probably nothing unusual about this name. It is believed to be of Anglo-Saxon origin and from the Latchford area of Chester in England. Richard Latchford, 36, lived in Farrenredmond, Dingle. He was a magistrate and operated a corn and timber mill at Milltown.

Latchfords also had a general store on Main Street which was taken over by Paudi and Tom Fitzgerald around 50 years ago. The Kennelly photo archive has an image of ‘Mr. Latchford posing with the Dingle Sea Angling Association Cup’ for being the ‘Angler of the Year’. However, this writer drew a blank when searching for the photo.

Fitzgerland.

Another spelling error or was it deliberate? On the other hand, the information on the hand-written census form is virtually illegible. There were three sisters living in Garrahies, Knockglass, with the surname Fitzgerald.

They were Anne Mary, 70, and a farmer; Elizabeth, 62, and M?M, 60. The first name of the youngest sister is impossible to decipher. The enumerator was a Constable William Flannery but he is not to blame for the ‘Fitzgerland’ error.

Once again that honour goes to the person who transcribed the census form to the printed version. Were they not familiar with the name Fitzgerald, were they drunk or just being mischievous?

MacGillycuddy

John MacGillycuddy, 56, and his wife Emily Jane, 52, lived in Ballinagroun, Lack, with their 17 year-old son Anthony John. The couple had been married for 21 years and their union had produced three children but two had not survived.

John’s occupation was ‘Landowner & JP’ and apart from the three MacGillycuddys there were 12 other people living on the property.

These were 2 chauffeurs, a laundress, a cook, a housekeeper, 2 housemaids, a kitchen maid, a butler, a footman, a coachman and a gardener.

Free Cancer Survivorship Programme In Dingle

Following on from the success of its Cancer Thrive & Survive programme in Dingle last September, cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, is bringing the popular course back to West Kerry in September.

The six-week programme, run in association with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), is designed to help participants with the transition from active treatment to living well with, and beyond cancer.

Beginning on September 21st, the free programme will run at Dingle Primary Care Building (Dingle Hospital) every Thursday morning for six weeks, from 10.30am to 1pm, and is limited to 12 people.

The model is based on self-management, with information and support, and includes modules on well-being, cancer prevention, information on long term consequences of treatment and psycho-social support.

This hugely programme has been offered at Recovery Haven Kerry’s Tralee centre on a number of previous occasions, and this is the second time the charity is offering the programme in Dingle.

Programme leader and Recovery Haven Client Services Co-ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney, explained that the course helps and empowers patients as they finish treatment and transition into the survivorship period.

The programme includes sessions that address the recovery of selfconfidence, adjustment to a changed self, and confidence to self-manage cancer-related problems and to promote recovery, well-being and successful transition to survivorship, following a cancer diagnosis.

The Cromane SeaFest Committee has organized an exceptional festival scheduled from September 8th to 10th , celebrating Cromane's finest local Oysters & Mussels. This event is guaranteed to be a fantastic experience. The festival is packed with "Surf and Turf" themed activities for all ages. You can join in on Maritime Walks, Water Trampolining, Scavenger Hunts, The ARC Project and more. Cromane Oysters & Mussels are the stars of the weekend, with the much-coveted Cromane Oyster Shucking Trophy up for grabs. The winner of this trophy will represent Cromane Seafest at The Galway Oyster Festival on September 22nd. This year, Cromane SeaFest has come up with something truly unique and special.

Pauline Moroney, the PRO of Cromane SeaFest said, “We have created a sensory experience for children with additional needs. It revolves around a captivating story that is centered on the sea.” She further added, “Children will be able to explore the story through all of their senses, including touch, smell, and sound. They will feel the soft sand, breathe in the salty sea air, and hear the sound of the crashing waves against the shore. Our experience is designed to be all-inclusive so that all children can participate and enjoy this magical journey through the sea!”

She also expressed her gratitude towards the community, young volunteers, teachers as well as local business Boyles of Killorglin, Slogadh Signs, A4 Stationary, and Hannah Mary's for their immense help in making this project possible.

Patie O'Sullivan, the Vice Chairperson of Cromane Seafest, expressed his gratitude for the incredible and humbling support they received from local businesses and individuals towards the festival. He also thanked The Department of Agriculture Food & The Marine, Kerry County Council, Department of Rural and Community Development, Failte Ireland, and BIM for their generous support. In 2018, Aileen graduated with a Diploma in Musical Theatre along with a Diploma in Dance Instruction. Since graduating she has gained a vast range of teaching experience in Britain & at home in Kerry. Blas na hÉireann - The Irish Food Awards finalists will gather later this month in the Blas Village on Green St as over 350 producers from all across Ireland will travel with their colleagues, families and friends to take part in the weekend’s awards, the networking and events.

Aubergine, Polenta Crusted Halloumi and Sumac Yoghurt

Ingredients

2 aubergine, cut in half and scored

2 garlic cloves, sliced

Olive oil

200g halloumi, cut into thick slices

100g polenta

1 egg, beaten

together, wrap in tinfoil and pop in the oven for about 40 minutes. Once soft, remove from oven, scoop out the flesh and chop or put in the blender.

For the halloumi, dip each slice in the egg and then into the polenta. Put a pan on over medium heat, once hot add a little oil and add the halloumi and cook for 2-3 minutes on either side until nicely browned.

Aubergines are in season right now so here is a delicious Middle Eastern inspired dish that includes some crunchy polenta crusted halloumi and sumac infused yoghurt. Sumac is a tangy spice that is lemony flavoured that you can find easily in your local ethnic supermarket. It also works well with chicken or fish! This is a wonderful dish to make for lunch or for dinner as a side or a veggie main course! We know you'll love it!

Dingle Marathon Going the distance… to better health.

The Dingle Marathon returns once again this Saturday, 2nd September. The course consists of a Half Marathon (13.1 miles) and a Full Marathon (26.2 miles) which goes around the Dingle Peninsula. This is a ‘must do’ event for seasoned runners, with the course designed for its competitors to enjoy its breath taking scenery and beautiful rugged coastline. And it’s also the only day in the year when vehicular traffic is removed from Slea Head.

We all could learn a thing or two from these marathoners. Good health does more than just get us through the day. It allows people to live happier, more productive lives. On a personal level, an active lifestyle benefits mental health. Studies show that those who engaged in regular exercise were twice as likely to report being happy as those who remained inactive.

But it’s not easy, marathon training itself is its own marathon. Most training regimens span 12 to 20 weeks, gradually building strength and stamina in preparation for the race. You’ll likely track more than a million steps running before setting one foot across the starting line.

So why do people run marathons in the first place? Firstly, the "runner's high" is no myth as the hormonal aspect of marathon running plays a big role in why people feel compelled to join in. Running is known for giving athletes a rush of endorphins, and crossing the finish line of an hourslong race can be described by some as ‘euphoric’

Supporting a cause is another motivation for embarking on such events, particularly marathons. The Dingle Marathon once again partners with the Irish Cancer Society, highlighting the charitable aspect of these events.

So If you’ve seen enough inspirational photos on your Instagram feed of friends completing marathons, you might find yourself wondering if it’s time to hop on the marathon bandwagon yourself. After all, running seems like a positive ‘trend’ to jump on.

REGATTAS. The Irish Coastal Rowing All Ireland Regatta held in Dingle Harbour over 3 days last weekend was a tremendous success with 60 races in total completed in a most impressive manner. Congratulations to all involved participants, organisers and supporters for a great weekends entertainment. A special mention to the Dingle Crews and cox Peter O'Regan who really stole the show with a huge medal haul through different age groups against the best competition in the country.

The DINGLE REGATTA postponed two weeks ago due to windy conditions is now fixed for this weekend beginning on Saturday at 3p.m. with seven races and Sunday at 2p.m. with ten races. In hindsight the postponement was indeed the correct decision bearing in mind the unfortunate loss of two lives of two competitors in rough seas the same day at the Ironman Event in Youghal Co Cork. Another wonderful feast of rowing activity assured so please come along at some stage over the weekend and support the competitors who have trained very hard over the past 4 months for this the final regatta on the West Kerry Calendar this year.

EDUCATION. Best wishes on your future careers to all the students who recently received their Leaving Cert results and now head into their chosen paths in life. Good Luck also to all who are either starting school for the first time or returning to their existing courses in primary, secondary or third level colleges or other institutions.

BUSINESS. Dingle Business Chamber wish Josie and Tim Finn a long and happy retirement following 30 years of service to the public through Curtain Call their successful outlet in John Street. Both have been and still are very much actively involved in other organisations giving of their time and experience to good effect for the continued development of the Peninsula.

THE BLASKET CENTRE. I recently had the pleasure of spending some time in Ionad An Bhlascaoid Mhor in Dún Chaoin with family friends and close relations. The upgrading and renovation work completed last

year really brought a new dimension to this wonderful amenity and is a must see for locals and tourists alike. The adjoining walks really make ones visit almost a full days outing and the friendly and well informed staff in both the centre and the restaurant makes the visit all the more memorable. Money well spent and a great addition to the ever increasing amenities here on our doorstep.

FLEADH CHEOIL. A great crowd of musicians, dancers, singers and story tellers from the Peninsula took part in the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Mullingar this year. Comhgairdeachas do gach éinne agus gan dabht beidh chuid maith duaiseanna acu ag teacht abhaile arís imbliana.

WELCOME. The annual Dingle full and half marathons take place this weekend and we

welcome all the participants, supporters and organisers to the Peninsula for what we hope will be a fine sunny rewarding and memorable visit for all concerned.

Unfortunately some short road closures are needed for health and safety reasons with full details in local press and on www. dinglemarathon.ie.

Both races start at 9a.m. in the Marina Car Park in Dingle with the half finishing in Dunquin and full back in Dingle via Ballyferriter and Gallarus and the Long Road.

Motorists and all road users are requested to cooperate with the stewards who will offer alternative routes where possible.

Apologies to any of you West Kerry People who enjoy these short pieces for the long delay between this article and the previous, it may have seemed long but that’s relative, as this article will come to show. I’d like to start this one by distinguishing between “Vectors and Scalars”. A Scalar is something in Physics which is only a magnitude, what I mean by that is it’s only a number of certain units like 80 kg or 50 degrees Celsius which we all know to be a Mass (Not Weight!) and a Temperature. A Vector on the other hand contains information about the Direction of the quantity being discussed, take a speed in the car 80 km/hr this is a scalar, but if we said 80 km/hr Northwest we’d be discussing a vector, namely Velocity. Take a trip to Tralee from Dingle, yes you are travelling, on average, Northwest but your average speed might be 70 km/hr and it takes an hour to get there, but if your velocity was 70 km/hr Towards Tralee then the journey would take 30 mins or so (some would say “As the Crow Flies”). Other examples of vectors are Lengths, Forces, Momentum and Torque.

years! Now I’ll get back to the title’s question… Is time a Vector? Usually described as Scalar but we can imagine from these ideas that time for one person can certainly disagree with another’s time. In one way we might describe the differences to be similar in a sense to that journey to Tralee, one person’s time is travelling straight towards a destination while another is moving differently through space-time and arriving at the destination (age) differently. An interesting point to note in Physics, is that there’s not many reasons that Time goes in the direction it does (that we understand as “forward”) most occurrences would make sense in physics to go backwards. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics may be the only theory which dictates a direction for time… Entropy (disorder) must always increase for a closed system.

Isaac Newton believed time to be absolute, that one second passing for one person, regardless of their position and velocity was equivalent to one second for another. Einstein turned this theory on his head with his theory of relativity. This theory makes it possible for satellites to work effectively and provides a basis for understanding time dilation in 1) high-speed travel, and 2) Position with respect to gravitational fields. An interesting fact that arises from this is that clocks go faster the higher up they are. If you had identical watches synchronised to the exact same time with a friend and one of you climbed Everest and the other took a trip to the bottom of the Mariana Trench when you both arrived back in Dingle for pints of the black stuff and a chat about your escapades, you’d find that the time differed between them. It’s not just that your watches are different, you will have a slight difference in your ages also which will be equivalent to the difference in the watches.

In 1905 Einstein came up with a theory about Space…. And it was about Time too!

The Festival is calling on Girls and Boys, up to the age of 14, to take part in their annual "Great Daingean Uí Chúis Bake Off"

The competition is a fun event open to all girls and boys who wish to bake a lemon drizzle cake. No previous baking experience is required and the event is open to all amateur cooks.

How the event works:

Once registered to take part in the bake off, all interested parties are asked to bake their lemon drizzle cake.

The selections must be baked by the entrant and brought to Dingle for judging on Sunday 1st of October at 11.30am. Judging shall be carried out by a panel of our award winning chefs from Dingle.

The event shall take place in Dick Mack's Yard where their creation shall be displayed and judged.

The competition results shall be announced at 12.30 pm on Sunday 1st October.

A similar phenomenon occurs if someone were to travel at a speed close to that of Light (330,000 km/second). I have a slightly younger twin who lives in London, and as he spends more time in the air than me he’s technically catching up in age (due to his distance in from the Earth’s gravitational force field while flying) but if I were to build a spaceship capable of travelling 99% the speed of light I could ensure that I became the younger twin much quicker. A 5-year Roundtrip to Proxima Centuri (the closest star from our Solar System) at max speed would last 5 years for me, but when I returned he would have aged 36

It’s All In The Mind Play The Ball Where The Monkey Drops It

Have you heard the story of how the British built a golf course in colonial Calcutta?

Once it was ready for play, they encountered an unexpected problem. The local monkey population also showed an interest in playing on the novel smooth green fairways. They would swing in from the surrounding trees and pick up the balls, tossing them here and there, disrupting the golfer's game. Not to be outdone, the British built a high wall around the course. This of course, proved to be no obstacle to the monkeys and only added to the fun. Next, they decided to trap the monkeys and relocate them, but as soon as they removed one, another appeared. They tried to lure them away with other attractions but nothing would prove to be as much fun to the monkeys as watching humans go wild whenever their little white balls were disturbed.

Eventually, the golfers gave in to reality and decided to change the rules of the game. The new rule would be that you played the ball wherever the monkey dropped it!

Every one of us finds that life doesn’t always go the way we want it to : no matter how much effort and planning we put into something, we are often frustrated in our hopes and desires.

Mostly, we find this hard to accept. We want pleasure and happiness and we don’t want obstacles, disappointments or hardships. We believe, at some level, there is something wrong if we don’t always succeed in our endeavors, that we are somehow failures in life. We think ‘this shouldn’t be this way’ or ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘ there must be somebody to blame’

It is an astonishing fact of human life that we believe we should be able to eliminate dissatisfaction and suffering. We think if we play by the rules, do all the right things, shouldn’t we be rewarded? Given the evidence of our direct experience, we know that the very nature of existence is impermanent and unpredictable- life is in constant flux and no matter how hard we try we cannot control it. So, despite our very best efforts in the game of life, at any moment the monkey can come along and move the ball into the rough or run away with it altogether!

We all want our lives to go a certain way, whether it's getting a certain number of points in the Leaving Cert or not getting stuck in traffic, we want control and certainty. We all want to be loved and accepted, we want to feel safe. But, inevitably, life does not cooperate with how we want it. Like in the story, the monkeys throw the ball in all different directions. And we know this. The more we pay attention to what we are feeling and what is happening around us the more dissatisfaction and suffering we see, From the little irritations of every day life to the greatest of tragediesloneliness, illness, poverty, feeling excluded, joining the wrong queue at the supermarket, being cold, being in love , not being in love, losing the match, not getting the exam results you expected - all this is suffering! Even without talking about the wars, forest fires, oppression and hunger that are happening all over our world, suffering is really common. It is not an unusual occurrence or a special condition. It is a daily experience. So it doesn't really seem plausible that we can avoid or resist the upsets

that life throws at us. Ignoring or burying what we don't like only leads to stagnation and becomes a conditioning factor in our lives. Reacting and blaming leads to dividedness and fear.

Our willingness to adapt to unforeseen realities, (both positive and negative) with equanimity and grace determines our level of mental and emotional anguish and suffering. Instead of using tremendous amounts of energy, fixating, stressing, worrying and trying to determine the outcome of what is often beyond our control, we can learn to let go. Instead of clinging to our ideas of how things should be, we let go.

Once we recognise the randomness and even unfairness of life, and learn not to take it personally,then we are in a better position to accept it. And let there be no mistake, acceptance is not resignation! It simply means that we can put all our resources into responding to the situation with compassion, to the very best of our ability rather than add to our suffering with the anguish of ‘why me’

The obstacles that we are faced with are the very opportunities we are given to grow, to move outside our comfort zone, to develop insights and awareness, to be courageous enough to ask for help, to explore new paths. Ultimately, life’s challenges liberate us from an unfulfilled life of conditioning and self-limitations. They give us the freedom to find meaning and purpose in our very precious , unique lives. Seeing the world as it is rather than as we want it to be opens our eyes to the wonder and joy and exquisite beauty of a moment. Even though it takes practice and determination, when we surrender to the reality of how things are, instead of senselessly trying to control the monkeys we learn to play the ball wherever the monkey drops it.

Dingle Club Excels at Coastal Rowing Championships

Last weekend Dingle hosted The All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships with clubs from all over the country competing. The event is the premier event of the coastal rowing calendar . Accustomed to seeing the local naomhógs out on the harbour most evenings, many in Dingle were surprised to see that the naomhóg had been replaced by the seine boat by many of the local crews over the last month

On hearing that the All Ireland championships were coming to Dingle a plan was hatched between the local rowing club and local boat builder and sailor Peter O'Regan who had built his 4 man heritage class boat "the Flying Fish" over 20 years ago, to give the young crews an opportunity to take part in the competitions, but no one was expecting what happened on the waters over the weekend with Dingle Crews claiming 5 of the Junior Medals and 2 of the senior medals.

With Peter himself acting as Cox for all the races the club are now the Under 18s Boys and Girls All Ireland champions. They are also the Novices Ladies Senior All Ireland Champions with a crew which comprised of 3 girls from the Under 18s Team and legendary local rower Maunza Heidtke. Not to be outdone the boys under 18s, having been crowned under 18s champions, also decided to enter the senior novices race and become the All Ireland champions with an emphatic two length victory.

The under 16s team won silver in a very hard fought race losing out to Valencia and the under 14 boys took bronze in their race.

Speaking after the event Maunza said that what the club had achieved was an extraordinary achievement that shook up the Irish rowing community who couldn't believe that these young rowers were able to do what they did in such a short time. "Stuff like this just doesn't happen in the rowing world, it was an amazing achievement" she said.

A huge congratulations to all of our new All Ireland Champions, to Peter O'Regan and all involved with the club.

SENIORS: County Junior Championship: Cromane 1-8, Tarbert 0-11

Cromane and Tarbert fought out a draw in the county junior championship in Tarbert on Sunday. As a result, both sides qualified for the quarter-finals which will be played this weekend. In Sunday evening’s draw Cromane were pitted against Sneem-Derrynane, the time and venue will be known later this week.

In Tarbert’s Shannon Park Cromane had the better of a tight first half and led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break, the goal coming from Ethan Griffin to go along with points from Jason O'Connor, Darren Houlihan (0-2 frees), and Tony Duffy.

Tarbert started the better and, by the 38th minute, they led by one, 1-4 to 0-8, having hit three points without reply.

Cromane finally settled into the second half and went on a scoring spree of our own hitting four points in a six-minute spell between the 44th and 50th minutes: the scores coming from Liam Walsh, Sean Teahan, Jason O’Connor, and Donnchadh Walsh to open up a three-point gap, 1-8 to 0-8. However, these were to be our last scores as Tarbert fought back with the last three scores of the game to level matters with three minutes left on the clock. This ended the scoring with both sides missing some gilt-edged chances towards the end.

UNDER-13s: Central Region Division 2 final: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 4-8 Milltown-Castlemaine 1-11

The GGC under-13s contested two Central Region finals last week.

On Sunday last, August 27, GGC claimed the Division 2 title with a mighty six-point win over Milltown-Castlemaine in Beaufort.

GGC did all the damage in the first half after which they led by 4-6 to 0-5. Even though Milltown-Castlemaine did their best in the second half to try and claw back the big lead the GGC lads had more than enough to see the game out.

As a result, they become Central Region Division 2 champions, well done all. Castlemaine, in the Division 6 final in Cromane.

What an effort by the GGC maroon team last Tuesday evening, only a kick of the ball in it! What they scored would win most games!

Many thanks to the sides’ trainers Brian Keary, Tony O’Sullivan, Garry McGrath, Gavin O’Connor and Kevin Clifford for all their time volunteered with these players so far this year.

The sides now have the Mid Kerry Championships to look forward to.

ROWING: Cromane Rowing Club travelled to Dingle for the 2023 ICRF All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships over Aug 25th-27th. Conditions were tough and the competition was fierce over the three days but our crews still did amazingly well. We came home with three sets of silver medals in the Heritage Novice Ladies, U-12 Beginners and U-12 Girls. One of our members was part of a composite crew who won silver in the U-14 Girls.Seven sets of bronze medals also came back to our little villageHeritage U-14 Girls, Heritage U-16 Girls, Heritage U-12s, one design U-12's, U-18s, U-16 Girls and our Seine Boat men. Family and friends of Chris O'Driscoll, Camp are hosting a Fundraising Night at the Dogs in The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee on Saturday 9th September.

Chris suffered a significant stroke on January 1st. 2023 and has spent the last 8 months between Cork University Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire, where he is currently being cared for. The funds raised on the night will support his ongoing rehabilitation.

CAMP FAIR

Camp Traditional Sheep Fair falls on Monday 18th September. Camp Fair is one of the last surviving fairs in the country where sheep are penned for sale by the roadside. Amongst the many breeds on our hills today, the hardy scotch sheep still takes pride of place in the flock. Brought in from Scotland by Lord Ventry a few centuries ago, they do well on our rich mountain habitat.

On Camp Fair day there will be prizes for quality sheep, chosen on the day.

Special Class for U/15’s confined to Camp. Pen of Sheep - best overall.

Pet Show at 3.30 p.m. in O'Dwyers forecourt. All pets great and small are welcome.

The traditional mutton pie is still a staple on Camp Fair Day. O'Dwye'rs Mace provides meals and food from the delicatessen all day long. Mary's delicious Mutton pies at The Junction Bar are a must and Annes Cafe, Ashes pub provide coffee, lovely sweet treats and more. Wonderful choices of good food all day long at Camp Fair.

After school the children come off the bus, very excited to meet up and have fun. This year Aughacasla National School Parents are organising field activities for the children above the old school.

PLUMBING & HEATING

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
