The Dingle Food Festival

Evan O'Shea

The 2023 Dingle Food Festival is almost here, taking place this year between 29th September and 1st October. Over the course of the weekend, food lovers will descend on the town to enjoy a wide array of food alongside cookery demos, workshops and live music.

It’s easy to see why the culinary experience has been ever popular, now in its 15th year running. Over 60 local businesses including pubs, shops, restaurants and galleries delight in taking part in the ‘Taste Trail,’ where festival goers enjoy samples of cuisine and drink at each location throughout the town. As local producers showcase the best food and drink Ireland has to offer.

The must-visit event truly provides something for everyone, from committed foodies to travellers, families and children alike. Over 50 artisan food stalls line the streets, creating a great atmosphere in the town. From freshly caught seafood for which the location is renowned, to homemade jams, and artisan chocolate, there is little that you won’t find on offer.

Aside from a full stomach and appetizing souvenirs, visitors also have the chance to leave the festival with valuable skills and culinary secrets which they can learn from the cookery demonstrations. Not only will attendees learn the tricks of the trade, but also gain an insight into the process behind some of Ireland’s most popular dishes.

As well as an abundance of opportunities to sample flavoursome food, the Dingle Food Festival also delivers a showcase of the craft beers and whiskey for which Ireland is well known. Dingle’s own distillery plays a key role in this of course.

The festival is committed not only to the support of local producers, but also the local environment. It is a sustainable celebration, as not only does choosing local options reduce carbon waste, but there is also a particular emphasis this year on ‘zero-waste.’ The food festival has set a goal of becoming entirely waste free by 2024, a goal which it is edging nearer to with the support of local sustainability group, Transition Corca Dhuibhne.

Festival organisers have put in place a ‘Bring Your Own Bowl’ initiative, where festival goers will be rewarded for bringing their own cutlery with a free ‘green ticket’ for the Taste Trail. There are also water refill stations located along the trail, funded by Kerry County Council, to rinse cutlery or refill water bottles and reduce the presence of single use plastic. Who better to coordinate the event than the local community themselves. The festival team consists of selfless volunteers from the area, who work tirelessly to make the festival the weekend that it is. These volunteers deserve recognition and praise for putting together such a spectacular weekend.

Getting to the Bottom of those Ill-Winds!

Autumn has well and truly arrived with increasing leaf fall lately and cooler temperatures. As I write this article on Tuesday evening, the country is bracing Storm Agnes which is due to make landfall in the morning. At least these windy episodes are short-lived and we are forewarned well in advance. For some people, however, the matter of wind can be an endless torment and a great source of discomfort and embarrassment. Flatulence is very common and normal with every human being experiencing it, even the ladies, up to 25 times a day! It is the body's way of expelling gas produced during the digestive process. It is the by-product of eating and breaking down food for the assimilation of nutrients. Beneficial bacteria residing in the small intestine are responsible for most of the gas passing as flatulence. These bacteria are involved in completing the digestion of certain foods such as complex carbohydrates, sugars and starches. This gas is made up of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen and is predominately odourless. Foul-smelling gas is caused by gases containing sulphur which is found in protein foods such as meat and eggs, as well as some cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage). For most, flatulence does not cause problems but if it is becoming a nuisance or you feel that you are blowing more than the average human there are some measures you can take to improve digestion and reduce your personal emissions!

1. Eat slowly with your lips sealed together. Chew your food well and avoid drinking large volumes of liquids during meals. Swallowing air while eating is responsible for gas coming back up and out as burps, but some of this air can take the low road too! Give your digestive system a helping hand by chewing food until it is liquid - particularly protein foods to reduce bloating and extra gas being produced by over-worked bacteria dealing with poorly masticated foods. Too much liquids taken at mealtimes may dilute stomach acid and digestive enzymes resulting in more gas and incomplete breakdown of foods leaving the stomach.

2. Air can also find its way to the intestines in food and beverages. Bubble trouble is found in fizzy drinks, beers, sodas, milk shakes even sponge cakes and soufflés!

3. Beans and lentils are a great source of nutrition and much needed fibre. Unfortunately, they have garnered a bad name when it comes to gas! Instead of ditching your good intentions to eat more of these foods- improve their digestibility by soaking them for at least 12 hours and boiling them slowly for about 2 hours. A strip of Kombu

(kelp seaweed) will also make beans easier to digest and reduce the windy factor associated with eating beans! Increasing fibre in your diet too quickly can cause a bit of extra gas so up your fibre slowly to allow the gut to adjust. For most humans the benefits of eating plenty fibre will outweigh the negatives…eventually!

4. Foods sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (found in almost all processed foods) can also contribute to bloating and flatulence because the small intestine cannot absorb large amounts of fructose. Sorbitol, maltitol and xylitol can also have similar effects. The same applies to fruit juices which contain imbalanced fructose and sorbitol levels without the fibre of the original fruit.

5. Eat smaller meals and be mindful when you are comfortably full to avoid overeating.

6. Digestive aids such as bitter herbs (herbal apertifs) and digestive enzymes can aid digestion by improving the breakdown of certain foods. Our ability to produce the necessary enzymes required for digestion can be impaired by stress, age, medications and illness. Taking an enzyme supplement can help boost and replace diminishing enzyme levels - another possibility in bloating and flatulence. Certain spices and herbs like ginger, caraway and fennel, can aid digestion and reduce gas. Consider incorporating them into your meals.

7. Call in the army with the assistance of broad-spectrum probiotics. An imbalance of gut bacteria is almost always involved with excessive flatulence. Our healthy bacteria are often either underfed through a poor diet lacking in essential fibres or outnumbered by an overgrowth of the bad guys. Antibiotics or bouts of gastroenteritis can leave us particularly vulnerable by wiping out healthy bacteria leaving some foods only partially digested, rotting and stinking in our guts!

8. Activated charcoal has been used for centuries for the treatment of poisoning as it absorbs toxins and toxic gas in the intestines. Nowadays it is available as a supplement to help reduce gas and bloating in the short-term. Charcoal is not recommended as a longterm remedy but it is handy if you are going out and need a little assurance that you are not going to let rip in public. Do not take with other medications as it can interfere with their absorption, blocking their effectiveness. Amusingly, you can buy charcoal underwear and cushions that can absorb the fart as it exits. Not sure if these measures will work but worth a mention for imagery alone!

9. Regular physical activity works out the gut muscles which in turn can promote healthy digestion and reduce gas. High levels of stress can affect digestion and lead to fart attacks – if this is you, try incorporating some stress-reducing techniques like deep breathing or yoga into your daily routine.

10. Finally, stay hydrated throughout the day. Drink warm water to help move things along and prevent a sluggish bowel.

Remember that everyone's digestive system is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. It may take some trial and error to find the right combination of strategies that work for you.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), chronic constipation, food intolerances, coeliac disease, gastroenteritis and malabsorption issues are often accompanied by excessive flatulence and warrant investigation if they are on-going. For most folk, however, emissions can be greatly reduced by adjusting the diet and the way you eat. Rather than throw caution to the wind in these matters, it is best to pay a little more attention to it!

MINISTERS AGREE A 7-DAY EXTENSION TO THE SLURRY SPREADING PERIOD

In light of the recent wet period of weather and considering the scientific criteria to determine whether the period for slurry spreading can be extended beyond 30 September, The Departments of Agriculture etc and of Housing, Local Government and Heritage have agreed to extend the slurry spreading period by 7 days. This is in line with the maximum period that can be granted at present based on the published criteria. The closed period for slurry spreading will therefore commence on 8 October 2023. The unseasonable weather conditions this summer and more recently have affected farmers ability to travel their land and therefore spread slurry. It must therefore be acknowledged that the Minister eventually moved to address this issue.

N & P STATEMENTS FOR JANUARY TO AUGUST 2023 NOW AVAILABLE

Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period 1 January to 31 August 2023 are now available on the department’s online system. Interim N & P Statements help farmers plan for the remainder of the year to ensure compliance with the limits set in the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare or the limit of 250 kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare for those who hold an approved Nitrates Derogation. The maximum stocking rate permitted for commonage is 50 kg livestock manure nitrogen per hectare.

Those dairy farmers who have not yet confirmed their band have been defaulted to the highest band of 106 kg N/cow in accordance with the Nitrates Regulations. In line with the department’s letter to these farmer’s earlier this year, they still have until 30 September to declare their band if they believe the highest band is inappropriate for their herd.

If a farmer is in doubt about exceeding his Nitrates limits, he may:

• exporting slurry/farmyard manure and declaring the movement online

• reducing livestock numbers

• renting additional land

However, the idea of adding extra land to one’s profile would benefit farmers for 2024, but not this year.

Also, these measures will benefit farmers in the future, but if the Minister does not act on the derogation situation, he is placing dairy farmers in a position of serious financial loss. He seems to be taking EU Directives in the yahoo, and not fighting for farmers.

FERTILISER CLOSING STOCK ONLINE SYSTEM

Some people think of this as better information/ data management, but it also appears to be in the mould of Big Brother watching you. Shopkeepers or craftsmen do not need to keep

records of all stock they purchase, and post them on a Government Department website or portal, to be inspected on, at any time without warning.

However, the registration on the Fertilizer Database is mandatory, and everyone should have completed this last month. Most likely, your Farm Advisor has submitted this for you. One thing that DAFM and it’s Minister haven’t given much thought to is that many farmers are still not computer or tech savvy, and these new regulations that have to be complied with on-line causes much worry, especially for the older farming community.

The next move is for farmers to declare any fertilizer held over from the 2023 spreading season, until 2024. As the closed date for spreading was 15th September, any fertilizer on the farm is to be declared, but for simplicity, (in the future) farmers who can, should ensure that they have no stock to carry over to the following year. This simplifies their system and may reduce the risk of inspection. Farmers should adopt A Zero Fertilizer Carry-Over Policy.

The final date for submission of closing stock of fertiliser on farms and premises is 15 October 2023. Declaration of closing stock is a straightforward process whereby farmers, or their agents, can log on to agfood.ie. In cases where there are no stocks of fertiliser on hand, it is simply a matter of ticking a box to declare a nil stock return. Where there is fertiliser present, the declaration should include the type of fertiliser being held and the quantities.

NATIONAL BEEF WELFARE SCHEME 2023 EXTENSION

Here’s a scheme that doesn’t seem to be worth much, especially to the smaller beef farmer, and doesn’t really seem to have had much though put into it. However, it is as simple as tick the box. It’s one of those schemes that you have to spend money to get money, so you can really call it a grant, rather than a subsidy. And like all grants, it liable to a certain level of scrutiny, and you will most likely experience some sort of inspection over the scheme’s duration.

The scheme supports meal feeding suckler calves pre- and post-weaning; and in testing for the presence of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) in their herds. Both actions are mandatory for farmers who wish to participate in the scheme. Farmers who take part in the NBWS as well as the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP), can earn €200/cow calf pair up to a maximum number of animals. But you must be in both, so this is not a true reflection of the Beef Welfare Scheme.

Participants must get a vet to herd test their stock for IBR and test up to twenty animals for IBR antibodies. If a herd has less than twenty bovines, then all must be tested. Farmers will be paid up to €300 per herd depending on the number of animals tested for IBR. But the test may cost as much as €250, maybe even more, so one must do the maths here.

Meal feeding must also take place, for a period of four weeks pre-weaning and two weeks postweaning to reduce calf stress at weaning time.

Farmers will be paid €35 per eligible calf up to a maximum of 40 calves. Again, all applications must be carried out, on-line, on Agfood.ie.

TAMS III (Tranche 1) - ALL ELIGIBLE APPLICATIONS WILL BE APPROVED

Apparently, all eligible applications under tranche 1 of the new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS 3) will be approved. Why the delay, no-one knows, but there seems to be serious hold-ups in the system. This is despite the system not being much different from that of TAMS I or TAMS II.

Over 8240 applications were submitted under TAMS III, with little of no movement on them since, nor any acknowledgements to said applicants on the progress of their applications. The number of applications is three to four times larger than usual, but the system should not have virtually collapsed, and farmers should not have been kept in the dark. In normal circumstances, when a farmer submitted his TAMS II application, they would receive a letter of acknowledgement or approval within several weeks. This time, it seems to be taking half a year, and in many cases, farmers cannot wait this long to replace an essential piece of equipment, especially dairy farmers. Many of you will have purchased the item regardless, and had to forfeit the TAMS III grant support.

The minister was “delighted to confirm” all 8,241 applications. He needs to now pay these, and assure farmers that future applications will be paid in a timely fashion, least farmers give-up on TAMS III applications altogether!

NEW SHEEP ‘AIM SERVICES’ APP

Similar to the facility offered to dairy/beef/other cattle farmers, there is a new “app” available to sheep producers.

This is phase 1 of a new digital application which allows sheep farmers to notify their farm-tofarm movements online. The safe and secure app developed by DAFM is named ‘AIM Services’ and when fully rolled out, will allow keepers to notify all livestock movements directly to the department without the use of paper.

The ultimate goal of this is to provide all livestock keepers with a digital alternative to paper in notifying all required animal movement information directly to DAFM. The first phase of the AIM Services app will allow sheep farmers to notify their farm-to-farm movements from their phone and means they will no longer need to post the “pink copy” of the dispatch document to their local RVO.

Although posting forms appears to some to be out-dated, (especially to those in Government Departments that have all the training and education resources at hand, as well as the latest technology), it is a way of life for many of our more gentile and elderly farmers/citizens. It is an excuse to get out of the house, and to go to the post office and meet neighbours and friends.

It must not be said that this new measure should be abandoned. But the old ways should also be preserved, least we drive those farmers (who are vulnerable to change) away from farming.

Film Review - A Haunting in Venice

Tom Ó Neachtain

is soon found dead. This leads Poirot to suspect the many attendants of the séance, or maybe even the very ghosts Mrs Reynolds was trying to communicate with.

This film marks an interesting departure for Branagh’s adaptations of Christie’s work. His previous Christie adaptations, 2017’s Murder on the Orients Express and last year’s Death on Nile, were both lavish, escapist mysteries that were easy on the eye as well as the brain. A Haunting in Venice however leans far more into the horror side of the whodunit subgenre, with the introduction of ghosts and the supernatural. This was a genius move and Branagh’s part, as the film works both as a classic Poirot mystery, and a shuddery creep-fest. The Venetian setting contributes hugely to the creep factor. The romanticism usually associated with the city is nowhere to be seen, with Branagh’s Venice feeling more gothic and eery. The brokendown villa in which the séance takes place is gorgeously designed, with each room evoking the sense that there’s something hiding in the shadows. The film is brimming with the kind of creepiness that makes even the darkness of the cinema theatre feel unsettling.

Similarly, the dynamic cinematography seen throughout is also a key contributor the film’s unnerving atmosphere, with crooked camera angles and uncomfortable close-ups putting the audience on edge even before the bodies begin to pile up. The cast of suspects aren’t as memorable as the best murder-mysteries out there, but they have compelling interpersonal dynamics. Sadly, the film’s central mystery isn’t as engaging as it should be, it sticks very closely to Branagh’s other Christie adaptations as the final series of reveals play out. The central mystery feels slightly formulaic, and Branagh needs to shake up the simplistic approach of his mysteries if he’s to make a fourth instalment.

A Haunting in Venice is worth a watch exclusively for its well-executed horror features. Its creeping dread and uneasiness are likely to stick with you long after watching it, and its atmosphere and direction make up for its relatively by-thenumbers mystery. Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

Ted Creedon

This new series is based on the British Newspaper Archives (BNA) covering a period from early 18th century to the 1920s. The focus will be on items of interest from Kerry with an occasional entry from Clare and Cork.

Extensive slate quarry discovered near Dingle- 1868

A magnificent slate quarry has been discovered on the lands of Ballyoughtra (sic) in the parish of Dunurlin and on the estate of Lord Ventry, according to the Dublin Evening Mail of November 30, 1868. An experienced quarryman named Moors has been brought from Valentia slate quarry to test this discovery.

We understand his opinion is that the slate is of excellent quality and superior to Valentia slate. We also understand that Lord Ventry has taken a very serious interest in this discovery and is planning to develop the quarry on an extensive scale.

The land between the quarry and Smerwick harbour is level so transport from the site, following the sawing and polishing of the slate, will be easy. The slate can be put aboard ships and delivered to any part of the world. This development will have major benefits for the local community.

Desperate times in Dingle

-Kerry Reporter, 13, February 1847

We are in a deplorable state here for want of food. The Relief Committee’s supply of meal has run out. The Commissary refuses to release any food from the Government stores.

The poor are at the mercy of the famine mongers who have increased the price of meal from two shillings and four pence to three shillings per stone (6.35kgs) and they have only a small supply remaining at these prices. We do not expect any arrivals of breadstuffs (flour) until Sunday.

Our bakers are making exorbitant profits. It is a pity we do not have the same laws here as in Turkey where profiteers are nailed through their ears to their own doors.

Murder of Expectant Mother

- Dublin Morning Register 15 March 1835

The County Clare Assizes were held in March 1831 and one case being heard concerned the involvement of three men in the murder of Bridget McNamara. The men were James Cross, Patrick Doherty and William Doherty who were tried for the woman’s murder by shooting her.

The woman was four months pregnant with Patrick Doherty’s child when he and the others visited her house at night and dragged her

from under her bed. She underwent an ordeal of violent menacing and ill-usage because she insisted the child’s father was Patrick Doherty.

Suddenly, one of the three shot her in the abdomen which ended two lives. The men were found guilty of murder and were executed in Ennis on Friday. One of them protested his innocence.

The Pope to visit Ireland in 1835

-Kerry Evening Post, 11 February 1835

This report is said to be an extract of a letter from Dr. McHale, Catholic Archbishop of Tuam, to a friend in Liverpool dated 01 February 1835

“I have infinite pleasure in assuring you that His Holiness the Pope has signified his intention to visit Ireland this summer.

As stated in his letter, according to Cardinal Weld, I may expect His Holiness in my diocese on or about the seventh of June”. The Post admitted that it didn’t know if the report was genuine or a hoax but had much derogatory comment on such a visit which will not be repeated here.

“We should like to know what King William and Sir Robert Peel would say if the Pope, without leave, were to visit his Catholic ‘subjects’ in Ireland. Let him go to Ireland by all accounts … and be converted’ the paper stated. (Pope Gregory XV1 was in office at that time. Cardinal Thomas Weld was an English landowner who relinquished all his assets to become a Catholic priest).

Shannon Lighthouse

- Stamford Mercury, 17 October 1717

They write from Dublin, That the Parliament has voted a supply to his Majesty of £279,648 and 11 shillings, for discharging all debts to Michaelmas 1717 and for supporting the Civil Government and an army of 12,000 Men.

They have also addressed his Majesty to build a Light-House at the Mouth of the River Shannon to prevent Shipwrecks on the Western Coast of Ireland.

Notice to Passengers for Quebec

- Kerry Evening Post, 16 April 1838.

The Brig William The Fourth, 350 tons, with William Hastings, Commander, having arrived in Tralee harbour, those passengers intending to go by her are requested to get themselves in readiness as she will sail for Quebec on or after the 24th instant – weather permitting. For further information apply to W&R Hickson, American Passenger Office, Deal Yard Canal, Tralee.

New Pub in Annascaul

– Kerry Evening Post, Saturday, January 16, 1864

At the recent Petty Sessions court in Annascaul a Terence O’Donnell applied for a licence to open a new public house in the village. His brother had obtained a licence last October but has since died.

The new applicant was a retired member of the Constabulary force who requested a continuation of his brother’s licence. Constable Coyle and Sub-Constable McCarthy testified to the applicant’s good behaviour.

His Worship, Mr. R. Kae remarked that the people of Annascaul were very much opposed to the police. He said there were two other public houses in the village and that the village did not want an additional one.

The applicant, O’Connell, contended that the more public houses in the village the fewer people that would be in them which would reduce the incidence of riots in the village.

His worship said that if any disturbance or opposition to the police occurred in a public house that would result in that house losing its licence. O’Connell’s application was granted.

50 Bliain i gCeann Sibéal

I 1924, bunaíodh Club Gailf an Daingin agus tógadh cúrsa 9 bPoll ag Baile an tSagairt, cúpla ciliméadar soir ón mbaile. I 1930, d’aistrigh an Club achar gearr i dtreo na farraige go Dún Síon, áit a bhfuil an-aithne ag muintir Uí Mhuircheartaigh uirthí..

The club was based in Dún Síon for over 40 years with the site leased from local farmers. The needs of the landlords to encourage the growth of grass frequently clashed with the golfers' desire to have it short and eventually, when the lease expired, Dingle Golf Club closed.

Sna seachtóidí, chuaigh grúpa díocasach de 19 ar aghaidh le cúrsa gailf a fhorbairt don cheantar timpeall ar an Daingean.

The courageous 19, or the ‘Pilot Group’ as they were known, began to research possible locations including Burnham, the headland across the sound from the town, another site west of Ceann but eventually settled on the area of Baile Uachtarach, under the shadow of Ceann Sibéal.

All were enchanted by the panorama - from the Blasket Islands to Ceann Sibéal to the 3 Sisters and to Mount Brandon - and the process of establishing Golf Chumann Ceann Sibéal/Dingle Golf Links began.

Play began in 1973 on a 9 Hole Course designed by the great Eddie Hackett following the determined and successful efforts of the founding members to raise the necessary finance to purchase the land from the local farmers.

In the late 1980s, a second nine was added to Eddie Hackett’s original design under the supervision of the late Christy O’Connor Jr and in the early 90s, the Clubhouse was built.

In the intervening years, the Club has flourished and become a firm favourite of many visitors from Ireland and far beyond.

• A minimum QQI / FETAC Level 5 / 6 For further information contact and send CV to: molanoige2020@gmail.com

On Thursday August 3rd, Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal members were joined by Mark Kennelly, CEO, Golf Ireland, Michael Coote, Chairman of Munster Golf and a number of guests to mark the achievement of The Pilot Group, both in their choice of location and the construction of the wonderful golf course.

The surviving members of the founders and family representatives of those who had passed were presented with a commemorative medallion to honour their achievements. The inscription on the medallion referred to their ‘Fís’ or Vision, their ‘Misneach’ or Courage and their ‘Ceannródaíocht’ or Pioneering Spirit."

West Kerry Dairy SEC (Sustainable Energy Community)

Brilliant news for the West Kerry Dairy SEC, 65 farmers have begun the process of installing PV panels on their farms, this will reduce the farmers energy bills, reduce the energy demand on the grid and will undoubtedly decrease the carbon footprint of West Kerry. An information night was held by Dinny Galvin from the Dingle Hub and his steering Committee, DC Six Technologies and Solar Beo in i bPáirc Ghnó an Daingin le Údarás na Gaeltachta, to discuss the process with the farmers. Solar Beo will begin auditing the farms to advise them what system they should install and what grant to avail of. Each farm is orientated differently so these audits will provide extremely valuable information.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula

Caroline Boland

This edition brings you news from the Dingle Peninsula Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase at The Big E. The importance of the Dingle Peninsula being at The Big E originates from The Blasket and West Kerry families and relations – West Kerry’s Diaspora – who immigrated to Hungry Hill in Springfield from the 1800’s and today, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations come to connect at the Showcase with their stories, their hopes to connect once again with the Dingle Peninsula. This is a significant part of the magic that happens at The Big E!

For a 23rd year, Dingle Peninsula, vendors, crafters, educators and artisans connected with visitors to The Big E, North America’s fourth largest fair. Visitors to the Dingle Peninsula Pavilion included Kerry County Councillors, Irish Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works and the Gaeltacht Patrick O’Donovan, and newly appointed Irish Consul General Sighle Fitzgerald from the Irish Consulate in Boston. It was great to connect with the Irish diaspora in Western Massachusetts and beyond.

To celebrate the ‘Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day’ Irish music performers were on stages across the Showgrounds during the Fair’s first weekend, and our very own singer/songwriter/recording artist Éilís Kennedy performed at the Irish Cultural Center on Tuesday, September 19th which was a wonderful evening.

Businesses representing the Dingle Peninsula at The Big E include: Brian de Staic Jewellery, Celtic Gift House, Dingle Crystal, Louis Mulcahy Pottery, Sacred Heart University – SHU in Dingle, Dingle Distillery, My Ireland Box, Dingle Linens, Irish Cultural Centre of Western New England, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance representing 170 Businesses and Festivals across the Dingle Peninsula, and Western Mass Tourism Organisation. Go n-éirí libh for the remainder of the Fair which closes on Sunday 1st October. EU funded CE4RT Programme – Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism.

Final opportunity to avail of the €8,000 funding to support your business

on this important Sustainable journey, apply today on https://ce4rt. euproject.site/ - only 16 places available.

Reminder to all businesses who are interested in progressing their Sustainable Tourism journey that the online application form is open for the CE4RT (Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism) Programme. CTCD/ DPTA is partnering with MTU for our SME's (small, medium Enterprises) and applications can be submitted up to 12th October 2023. The closing date has been extended to allow more businesses from Poland, The Netherlands and Finland to apply. We recommend sooner is better – so act today! Sam is very happy to help with any queries you have and can arrange to come and meet you. Contact Sam at dptakerry@gmail.com for more information and support.

The Narcotics Anonymous Message

An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.

Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.

Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Dingle NA meetings are on Tuesdays 7.30pm & Fridays 8.30pm, in the Dingle Presbytery, off Green St, V92 AT18. www.nasouth.ie

Beef and Carraig Dhubh Stew

Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

2 large carrots, cut into large dice

1 parsnip, cut into large dice

½ tsp. tomato purée

300ml Carraig Dhubh stout

1 litre beef stock

salt and pepper

rapeseed oil

Method

It is now the time of the year that we start to cook more stews and casseroles. Previously we might have reached for a more mainstream brand of porter or stout but for this one I have opted for from one of our local breweries Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne (West Kerry Brewery).

The more we taste and ask questions of each ingredient we use for any dish will always change how we cook it and how our food tastes in the end. To prove this all you have to do is pour yourself a little glass of this porter or stout and then ask yourself what are the characteristics or the flavours that are present and how will this taste in my stew.

You see from the recipe I take about 10-15 minutes to start the stew rather than trying to throw everything into a pot together. The small bit of work at the beginning will always make your stews taste better.

Remember to cover the meat and vegetables with the liquid and always keep it to a nice steady simmer. Serve it with a big bowl of creamy mash and you will never go wrong.

Our new schedule for the cookery school is now available online at www. dinglecookeryschool.com , hopefully you will find a class to suit you there.

Ingredients

500g stewing beef, diced

1 tsp. flour (optional)

1 onion, diced

1 stick of celery, diced

1 bay leaf

small bunch of thyme

Dust the beef with flour and season with salt and pepper. Heat a casserole pot over a medium to high heat. Once it is hot, add a dash of oil and then add the beef. Allow the beef to brown for about 5 minutes. Remove the beef with a slotted spoon.

Add a little oil to the casserole pot and add the onion, celery, bay leaf and thyme. Allow these to brown over a medium to high heat for about 3 minutes. Add in the carrot and leave for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent from sticking / burning. Once they have browned add the parsnip and repeat the process. Add the tomato purée and cook for about 2 minutes. Return the beef to the pot at this stage.

Turn the heat down to medium, pour in the porter and leave to reduce by half. Add enough beef stock to cover the meat and vegetables. Cook this over a medium heat for about an hour and a half. At this stage, the beef should be tender and the liquid should have thickened nicely. Season with salt and pepper, remove the bay leaf and serve with some creamy mash potato.

A number of those present volunteered their services to form a committee who will now research training locations, type of activities needed and register the club for insurance cover and competitive events. Mind:A Short Mindfulness Practice

Here is a short exercise you can practice at any time during your day just to check in with yourself, pause for a moment and see how you're doing. You are not trying to fix or change anything. You are not trying to achieve anything in particular- you are simply taking the time to notice : are you tired; angry; happy; hungry?- you don't have to do anything about it, just observing with kindness how this moment feels.

1 Minute Mindful Practice

Intentionally, change your posture. Sit or stand upright. Get comfortable and close your eyes.

Now listen.

Coming into stillness, take some moments to scan through the body and just see what wants to relax, to let go a little.

You might take a full deep in breath, filling the chest, filling the lungs and a slow out breath, feeling the sensation of the breath as you release. And again, a deep in breath and a slow out breath, letting your breath resume in its natural rhythm, opening to your senses - noticing any strong sensations in the body : tension, temperature, clenching- letting it be. Noticing any obvious emotions- sadness, fear, excitement- letting it be. Noticing whatever thought is going through your mind right now. Taking one last deep in breath and a slow outbreath. Return to your normal activity.

‘The thought manifests as the word; The word manifests as the deed; the deed develops into habit; and habit hardens into character,

So watch the thought and its ways

With care, and let it spring from love

Born out of concern for all beings’

The Buddha

On Mae's first year anniversary 2nd October, her husband James, son Oliver, daughter Genevieve, daughter in-law Linda and grandchildren would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who supported us through our difficult time.

We acknowledge our relatives, neighbours and friends who shared in our bereavement and we wish to express our gratitude to everyone who supported us and sympathised with us.

Those who attended Mae's funeral mass, removal and burial and who watched the funeral mass online, who gathered at the graveyard and graveside and those who travelled long distances as we said our final goodbyes. Your kind words, flowers, texts, phonecalls, cards, letters, condolences on RIP.ie was the support that got us through our difficult time.

We would like to thank all those who called to the house with food ensuring we were well taken care of as well as those who took on responsibilities to help lighten our load during those dark days.

Thank you to Mae's GP Dr.Conor Brosnan and staff at the medical centre, Dingle who looked after Mae so well over the last number of years.

A special thankyou to the wonderful carers and nurses for the support and kindness they showed to Mae on the last few months of her life.

We thank Fr. Michael Moynihan and Cathy for their guidance and kindness they showed and the beautiful celebration of mass for Mae. Thank you to Donal O'Connor, funeral director, for his kindness and who looked after Mae so well with respect and dignity after her passing. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, we hope that all will accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our appreciation and gratitude.

Mae's deep faith and religion now means she is in heaven and she will bless us and help us each day.

As your token of our appreciation the holy sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intention. Mass for Mae's first Anniversary will take place in St. Mary's Church, Dingle on Sunday 8th October at 11.30am. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.

Leaba i measc na Naomh go raibh aici.

Banna Ceoil Lios Póil

Most Band members owned their own instruments, but the instruments and equipment owned by the band that were at risk of deterioration in storage were sold on disbandment in 2019. The proceeds of the sale amounted to €8000. This was divided amongst the following:

€4000 To Halla John L.

€2000 to Cancer Research.

€1500 to The Red Cross.

€500 to The Air Ambulance.

The Committee members of the previous era of Banna Ceoil Lios Póil welcome the good news that a new incarnation of the band is set to start soon.

The committee, which was made up of: Anne Prendeville (committee member 27 years), Theresa Carroll (committee member 27 years), Noreen Hanafin (committee member 19 years) and Kathleen Jordan (committee member 19 years & Band Master), would like to wish the new Committee the very best of luck.

Anne, Theresa, Noreen and Kathleen would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who contributed in any way over the course of the 27 years including: the many teachers of all aspects of the band, all of the guest teachers, people who served in the committee, band members from both Lispole and other parishes, and of course for the support and commitment from the parents down through the years.

Anne, Theresa and Noreen also wish to thank Kathleen for her dedicated service as Band Master. Many thanks also to those who took on the role temporarily when it was required.

Finally, we want to thank Pat Nelligan, who was Kathleen’s predecessor. He was Band Master from 1992-2000. Pat was also Band Master with the original band which started in the late 1970s with Tommy Evans and Michael Dorgan, and finished in 1987, after which there was a five year hiatus before the second era of Banna Ceoil Lios Lios Póil began in 1992.

The good news that, once again, there are new beginnings imminent means that the proud tradition of Banna Ceoil Lios Póil will live on.

Oíche Chinniúnach i dTrá Lí

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Oíche chinniúnach a bhí ag lucht peile an Aoine seo caite. D'éirigh le Gaillimh Aontaithe cáiliú don Phríomh-Shraith arís, agus iad ina gcuraithe sa Chéad Sraith. Ar an droch-uair, ba le bua compordach ar lucht na Ríochta i bPáirc Chnoc an Iolair a rinne gaiscígh Chathair na dTreabh é sin a bhaint amach.

Ní féidir ceart na bua a shéanadh ar Ghaillimh: cúig chluiche buacacha fichead as 31 babhta imeartha, agus gan ach dhá cheann caillte acu. Deich mbliana ó shin, bhí siad ag teacht ar ais sa sraith náisiúnta tar éis trí bliana a chaitheamh ar deoraíocht, de bharr deacrachtaí eagraíochta agus iomaíocht aitiúil idir chlubanna a bhí teanntásach ag iarraidh dul chun cinn ina n-áit. D'éirigh leo an barr-shraith a bhaint amach sa chéad bhliain ar ais dóibh, ach díbríodh arís iad in 2017, agus tá siad sa Chéad Sraith ó shin.

Lena gceart a thabhairt do na Muimhnigh, choinníodar ag treabhadh leo sa chluiche san fiú nuair a bhí an cath caillte. Wassim Aouachria a scóráil ar dtús, ag seoladh cic cúinne ó David Hurley isteach i líontan Lee Axworthy lena cheann. B'shin díreach sara raibh leath-uair caite, agus deich nóiméad níos déanaí chuaigh Sean McGrath an-ghar don chomhscór ach gur chuir cúl báire na Gaillimhe, Brendan Clarke, an liathróid chun an adhmaid agus amach. Bhí mí-ádh ar Leo Gaxha gur aimsigh Clarke an buille cloigne ard a chur sé i dtreo an eangaigh in am chúiteamh ghortaithe an chéad leatha.

Hurley a chuir na Gaillimhigh níos faide chun cinn agus níos lú ná fiche nóiméad fágtha nuair a chomharthaigh an Réiteoir, Alan Patchell, go raibh cic éirice ag dul dóibh, agus chuir sé féin agus Francely Lomboto cúl eile an duine isteach san eangach roimh an deireadh.

B'é sin an chéad trófaí náisiúnta a bhain Gaillimh ó bhí bua acu i gCorn na Sraithe agus i Sciath na Céad Sraithe araon in 1996/7. Is minic feitheamh fada ag clubanna idir oícheanta cinniúnacha mar sin!

An tseachtain roimhe, tháinig na Ciarraígh abhaile ó lár tíre gan aon luach saothair, áit a raibh bua acu roimhe seo ar Bhaile Átha Luain. Ach ní raibh a gcomh-mhéid dan ádh orthu den iarraidh seo. Níor chabhair dóibh in aon chor é gur chuir Frantz Pierrot an liathróid i gcúl na gCiarraíoch laistigh de chúig nóiméad. Ní haon fhear grinn an t-imreoir céanna.

Leo Gaxha a thug uchtach do na cuairteoirí tamall beag roimh am sosa, nuair a dhein sé a chuid féin den pháirc, ag éalú ó thriúr cosantóirí agus ag scaoileadh urchair cice a bhuail an cuaille roimh dul isteach taobh thiar de chúl báire Átha Luain, Enda Minogue.

Ainneoin síor-ionsaí Átha Luain – agus iarrachtaí ar an dá thaobh – bhí droch-chríoch ar an gcluiche nuair a d’éirigh le Dylan Gavin pas cruinn ó Valeri Dolia a stiúradh thar braid Axworthy agus gan ach ceathrú uaire fágtha.

Tá an séasúr ag teacht chun críche anois, agus níl ach cúig chluiche fágtha ag lucht na Ríochta le gaisce déanach a dhéanamh. Ar aghaidh leo!

CAMP FAIR

Camp Fair was bigger and better than ever this year, with pens of sheep at Camp Cross and bargains made and sealed with a hand shake as in days of yore.

Perpetual Cups in memory of Camp families and friends were presented to owners of best quality sheep and pens.

Down many centuries, Camp Fair pens have been made from materials of the times and are often unique to specific times.

Dylan and Alex Guinans had the winning 20th century pen of sheep, sheets of zinc held together by hazel posts proudly erected by the boy's grandfather Jimmy Herlihy with a beautiful artistic name plaque finished to perfection by their Uncle John of Atlantic Stone. Jimmy was awarded the Jack Quirke Memorial Cup.

Gearoid O'Shea was awarded the Michael Cahillane Memorial Cup for the winning Millenium Pen of the day, with the O'Shea family name artistically displayed on front. Londoner Jonathon Hennessy was awarded a Camp Fair trophy for his novelty pen. And Jack Crean whose pony rail has proved the test of time at Camp Fair, won the Heritage pen category and was awarded The Michael O'Shea Memorial Cup.

Jimmy O'Dwyer received The Tom Batt O'Connor Memorial Cup for the best pen of rams and Tommy Griffin had the best pen of Ewe lamb at the fair. Tommy received The Tommy Griffin Memorial cup. The Maureen and Brendan Deane Memorial Cup was won by Tom Griffin for the most traditional pen of sheep.

The U15 Overall award was won by Aoibhinn O'Dwyer for her pen of sheep and Michael O'Shea, Dylan and Alex Guinan and Justin Goins were also awarded trophies for u/15 pens of sheep. Sponsor Jimmy O'Dwyer. Congratulations all and well done.

The Aughacasla School Parents led by Gemma Beales, Louise Kelliher and teacher Christina O'Shea brought a new energy to the fair in the afternoon. Jimmy O'Dwyer and Brendan from Milltown Mart held an auction of sheep. The youngest entrant at the mart, seven year old Rian Herlihy was delighted when his two ewes bought by Padraig O'Reilly fetched a great price. Over €2000 was raised at the mart, final figure for the day available later, proceeds to Aughacasla school. Grateful thanks and appreciation to all who sponsored sheep and other goods for auction and organised the field activities.

Overall a wonderful success, congratulations and well done to all of you. The oldest man at the fair, Patrick Deane at 93 has been coming to the fair since he was able to walk, bringing sheep with his father Patsy. Paddy Joe Crean was at the fair again this year home from London. Mary Casey from Acres, Annascaul celebrated her 89th birthday on the day and is still in the best of form. Happy birthday Mary!

Our own Amelia Day, a true matriarch of Camp Fair enjoyed her day too. Delicious Mutton pies were served up in O'Dwyers and Mary's pies at The Junction Bar were all sold out early. All simply the best. Ann was busy too in Ashe's Bar Cafe. And Gerard Mulligan entertained us all day long, joined later on outside Ashe's by James Bowler for a lovely session of music. And to finish off the night there was great music at The Junction Bar.

DINGLE TRAIN 1891-1953

Ronald Redshaw and his wife Rosemary visited the site of the train crash at Curradubh bridge, Camp last Saturday, where Ronald's great grandfather Alfred lost his life in 1893.

It was on Whit Monday and the Dingle train was taking pigs from Dingle Fair to the Train in Tralee.

The brakes failed after leaving Gleann na nGealt station and the train ran at uncontrollable speeds down the valley to Camp and onto Curradubh bridge where it failed to take the turn and plunged into the waters below. There were three men killed, the driver Alfred Redshaw and O'Loughlin, a fireman and Byrne.

Alfred Redshaw was laid to rest in a graveyard in Tralee. Alfred's wife Mary Anne who was pregnant with their third child at the time returned home to Dundalk for a period and later travelled to Ontario, Canada where the family reside today. Mary Anne never returned to Ireland, raising her children in Canada.

Ronald and Rosemary were delighted to meet George Edwards, Mary Fitzgerald and Brigid O'Connor on Saturday who shared stories about the accident with them and showed them around. Camp Community Council erected a stone in 1993 at Camp Junction to mark the centenary of the train crash. Rest In Peace all who lost their lives in this terrible accident at the time.

Cromane GAA

MID KERRY TEAM: Well done to Cromane’s Darren Houlihan who started at midfield for Mid Kerry in their second County SFC game against Shannon Rangers in Asdee on Sunday afternoon.

Darren kicked a point early in the second half as Mid Kerry came away with their second win of the County SFC with a 4-7 to 1-10 win.

MINORS: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors took on MilltownCastlemaine in the Mid Kerry Minor Football Championship last Monday evening (September 25) in Milltown.

The Mid Kerry Minor Championship has the following system: Laune Rangers will be seeded to the semi-finals while Keel/Listry, Milltown/ Castlemaine, Beaufort, and GGC will playoff in a league format.

The top team in the league format will be seeded opposite Laune Rangers in the semi-final. The second and third-place teams will be drawn against either Laune Rangers or the top team in the semi-finals. The fourth-placed team in the league will exit the competition at this stage.

UNDER-15s: The GGC under-15s are playing in Group B of the Mid Kerry Championship.

They started their campaign in Glenbeigh last Thursday evening with a game against Laune Rangers B.

They had a great match, with excellent skills on show and a great result to start us off in the Mid Kerry competition.

The finals of this competition are provisionally fixed for Sunday, October 8.

UNDER-14s: Cromane hosted the Mid Kerry Under-14 SuperTouch competition last Friday.

Two Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) teams took part as well as teams from Laune Rangers, Keel-Listry, Milltown-Castlemaine, and Beaufort.

The final saw Laune Rangers take on one of the GGC teams with the lads from Killorglin emerging victorious.

Well done to PJ Reidy for organising the competition.

UNDER-13s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-13s have two teams in this year’s Mid Kerry Championship which started a fortnight ago. Last Sunday the GGC under-13s took on their counterparts from Laune Rangers.

In the first match, the GGC ‘Red’ team played Laune Rangers A in the third round of Group 1 in the Mid Kerry Championship. Final score: GGC 4-9, Laune Rangers A 1-9.

This means the Red team are unbeaten in their two games thus far having had a bye in round 1.

The GGC A (Red) team have games against Keel-Listry and Beaufort to come in October.

Later on Sunday saw the second match of the double-header with the GGC ‘Maroon’ team lining out against Laune Rangers B for their third game in Group 2 of the Mid Kerry Championship. Final score: GGC 5-19, Laune Rangers B 0-1.

The Maroon team have won two of their three games in this competition.

Well done to both under-13 sides, some excellent football played and plenty of football left to look forward to.

The finals of the Mid Kerry Under-13 competition are provisionally fixed for Sunday, October 15.

SENIORS: Cromane will compete in Group A of the 2023 Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup competition alongside Milltown-Castlemaine and Laune Rangers.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

The North Pole at the South Pole are now taking registrations for their Christmas Market which will take place on 10th December. Feel free to get in contact with them if you wish to reserve a stall. Fill out application forms before 14 October. Check North Pole at the South Pole FB & Instagram for the forms and The Cottage Market Annascaul FB. Contact Blanca 087-3411441 & Elizabeth 0862663186

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

ALS-Annascaul Ladies Shed Not on the 30 Sep. due to Dingle Food Festival and Craft Day in Tralee. See you on Saturday 7 October at 3pm in the Community Care Hall. Bring a plant pot. All new members welcome. Fun activities 18+years. We wish Ines Zdesar the best in the Dingle Food Festival. The Green Heartbeat at Orchard Lane.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Get

your heating system up

ICA Annascaul Craft Day Saturday 30 Sep in Tralee. Sunday 1 October Autumn Federation Meeting 2:30pm and 4:30pm meeting in the Scout Hall, Tralee. All ICA members to attend, if possible. Representatives from National Office to discuss changes to the structure of the ICA organisation.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
