Important Notice West and Mid Kerry Live to cost €1 from next issue After nearly 15 years in operation West and Mid Kerry Live has been forced to take the reluctant decision to charge our loyal readers a small amount of just €1 per issue to help to cover the ever-increasing cost of compiling and printing our magazine. The cost of paper, printing and distribution has increased so much over the past few years that we are left in the unenviable position where we have to find additional revenue to cover the costs in order to keep the magazine going. Up to now all the costs of printing the publication have been paid for by the wonderful businesses and organisations that continue to advertise with us and we are extremely grateful for their loyalty and continued use of our magazine. West and Mid Kerry Live has become a vital part of the local community and we are so grateful for the continued support of all our readers and advertisers. Starting from the next issue on the 7th of December you will have to pay the shop €1 per issue when you pick up your copy. Míle Buíochas, Lorcán & Mossy

Go to Ground for the best Winter With the cold weather, wind, rain and snow comes colds, flu, aches and pains. Eating the right foods this time of the year will help to prevent and Nourishment Irene Flannery
Winter nourishment is rooted in our environment, of which, the weather plays a critical role. Indeed all the seasons and the nourishment they yield relies on steady, predictable weather patterns, which unfortunately, have taken a bit of a wild turn in recent times. Still, it’s good to see some of our Winter favourites on the shelves, in farmer’s markets and in our fresh produce shops. A big welcome back to Brussel Sprouts, red cabbage, hearty leafy greens and all the root veggies. Their timely return reminds us of the natural flow of energy throughout the year and all the goodness that comes with it. Fortunately, colder temperatures are on the way, which may not please some of you, but the natural world is expecting colder temperatures and much of the benefits of the season are relying on them. Embracing this natural flow of Earth energy will see us through the Winter in fine fettle and provide the rest we need until Spring comes around again. Trust the flow! Winter energy moves inwards, it is centered and grounded deep within us. We can observe this energy shift easily in animals and plants - as energy moves downwards, animals hibernate and plant energy is in the roots rather than the stems and leaves. Hectic working and family lives means this natural flow of energy is often overlooked yet our bodies are instinctively expressing the fundamental principles of Winter - rest, reflection, conservation and storage. To "go with the flow" is the best way you can prepare for the coming season and stave off many of the illnesses associated with Winter.
alleviate some of these symptoms. Winter food is warming and nourishing. Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, beets, potatoes, sweet potatoes, celeriac, beets, turnips, rutabaga, salsify, horseradish and radish are coming into season now. Their earthy flavour help to replenish the kidneys and restore Chi in preparation for the more active seasons that follow. They are best incorporated into stews, casseroles and hearty soups - slow, long cooking is also in tune with Winter energy. Salty foods direct energy to our core, also nurturing the kidneys. Naturally salty foods such as sea vegetables, miso, soy sauce, oily fish, crab and sauerkraut are perfectly placed in the Winter diet. However, unnatural table salt, processed foods and meats, snack foods, packet soups and ready-made sauces contain too much salt go against the body's natural energy flow and are harmful to the kidneys, heart and blood vessels, resulting in more disharmony, disorder and ultimately dis-ease.
Warm, aromatic spices - cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, ginger, star anise and liquorice are anti-inflammatory which ease aches and pains associated with Winter as well as warding off colds and flu. These can be used liberally in cooking, teas and stewed fruits. Meats such as beef, lamb, venison, poultry and game are better slow cooked as in roasting and stewing. This helps to breakdown these protein-rich foods, making them more digestible and easier on the gut and kidneys. Vegetable protein foods include walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and beans, especially kidney beans are also on the Winter menu. Grains for winter include millet, oats, barley and brown short grain rice and can be a fundamental part of your Winter wellness diet. These seasonal foods were traditionally eaten in Winter long before being replaced with take-aways and dead, processed foods, which have neither life nor season. In the pursuit of convenience we have lost touch with our intuitive sense of seasonal eating and with it, our ability to tune into the natural flow of life-giving energy - both within and around us. A move towards seasonal living and eating patterns is a move towards a healthier and longer life. In order to fully indulge this Winter energy let us first acknowledge the connection between ourselves and natural world around us. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Winter is ruled by the water element, which is associated with the kidneys, bladder, and adrenal glands. By the way, Traditional Chinese philosophies are not only for the Chinese. We regularly refer to TCM because these Eastern populations understand it better, have recorded it better and for the most part, live in harmony with the natural cycles in their environment - we could be a lot healthier if we followed suit. Going back through the ages, our ancestors had no other option but to live close to nature and instinctively honoured the seasons in their daily lives. The typical Winter diet and living practices reflected this Winter energy by nourishing the kidneys, bladder and adrenal glands much the same way as in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM, the kidneys are the source of all body energy (Chi), making them a whole system in the body and mind, not just an individual pair of organs as in Western Medicine. They store all the reserve Chi in the body so it can be used during times of stress and change, or to heal, prevent illness, and age gracefully. They are also associated with hearing and the proper functioning of the ear (being similar in shape is no coincidence). The Winter diet, not only nourishes the organs of the urinary system and adrenal glands, but also impacts on the health of our whole body both physically and emotionally. Emotions such as fear and depression are associated with kidney energy, making it even more relevant to tune into natural Winter nourishment to support and reassure our core and in doing so, alleviate the strain and drain on our emotional body. 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Other projects and activities will be announced later after planning for same. The basic welding introduction course was a great success last year and several members have expressed a wish to revisit this activity later in the season. Farming News Louis Murchan SHEEP IMPROVEMENT SCHEME ISSUED Payments under the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) have being issued to farmers, and this will continue for the next few days or weeks due to the inability of DAFM to pay everything or everyone at once. This is notable, as they were able to do this in past years, and considering that there were once 175,000 farmers on their books while this figure is now in the region of 115,000 – 120,000 farmers. While the minister was delighted to announce this payment, many farmers would be happier if they received their basic payments now known as BISS. The most recent news for those not yet paid is that they will not receive payment until 4th December. The advance payments in total are worth €19 million and have been issued to 17,000 farmers. The Sheep Improvement Scheme has been introduced to enhance animal health and welfare in the sheep sector. The Scheme provides financial support to farmers for taking extra steps to improve the welfare of their flock. The Sheep Improvement Scheme is co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the EU. In line with last year’s arrangement, the payments currently issuing are an 85% advance payment on the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS). The 15% of balancing payments are due to commence in May 2024. Payments may take up to 5 days to reach farmers accounts.

It is not clear why all applicants were not cleared prior to payment being issued. Surely, DAFM should work on one scheme, clear all applicants then pay everyone, rather than pay a few individuals in every scheme. ACRES I Training Courses Everyone should be aware by now that if they are ACRES I, they need to complete a Training Course. These are simple “Ticking-a-Box” exercises imposed on them and Farm Advisors by DAFM. At this stage, more are well under way and all would be booked out. There is a restriction of 30 farmers per course imposed on advisors and DAFM need to be advised of participants 24 hours before the event. Therefore, you cannot just show up and ask to be included on the day. The day comprises of three hours in class, in the morning followed by another three hours on a farm walk in the afternoon. Its not rocket science, but is can be an enjoyable day, so embrace it. You get paid €156 for the day, but completing the course means that you qualify for the entire scheme for 5 years (or even 7 years) so its worthwhile doing it. There is no point complaining to your advisors about the inconvenience, as it is an even bigger inconvenience for them, as where you may have to attend one, they may have to attend six or seven, or eight or ten. If you can’t get into one not, before Christmas, fear not, more will be held in the new year. No-one will be left out. Farmers are assured, as are we, that the first 85% of ACRES I money will be paid out prior to attending the course, and the other 15% will only be paid out once course is completed. Considering that this 15% will most likely not be paid until Late-January to Mid-February, this should not be an issue.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest
the severest storms ever witnessed in this season of the year. There have been heavy falls of rain and occasional showers of hail.
Ted Creedon
It is being reported that in some parts bordering the coast the potato crops have been destroyed. These plots will have to be dug out and turnips planted in them.
These items are taken mainly from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA).
Vandals on the Blaskets -Kerry Evening Post, 01 October 1902 Intelligence has reached Dingle of a crew of a steamship belonging to the Irish Lights entering one of the Blasket Islands called Inishvickillane, and from the remains of the Oratory in the burial ground they took away a long stone bearing Ogham inscriptions. The tenants of the island have instructed their solicitors, Messrs F and C Downing, Tralee, to institute civil proceedings with a view to compelling the person or persons who uprooted and transplanted this singular interesting relic, to bring the same to its original site immediately. It is very much to be deplored that a number of these Ogham stones are often removed from their original sites, as one of their greatest charms is the hallowed interest which they throw around the spot on which they were first erected.
Drunk and Disorderly -Kerry Evening Post, 10 August 1898 At Listowel Petty Sessions a young man named Mulvihill, of Charles Street, was charged with being drunk and disorderly. The defendant, who was somewhat noisy during the evidence of Constable Costello who prosecuted, was fined five shillings and costs. Defendant – “Five shillings and costs! Yerra, I won’t pay a penny”. Then turning to the Constable, he exclaimed, “I’ll meet you for all this, Costello”. The magistrate told Mulvihill, “You are fined ten shillings and costs now!”. Defendant – “Ten shillings and costs. I won’t pay a penny”. The magistrate requested that the defendant be placed in the dock. A scene then ensued. Mulvihill violently resisted being placed in the dock and was carried to the lock-up.
Faction fighting in Kerry -Cork Examiner 31 May 1861 Killarney, Thursday. – One of the most determined and brutal engagements that took place, to use the words of Mr. Cruise R.M., “In the quiet county of Kerry” during many years past came off on Monday last at the annual fair of Mullahiff. It being one of the biggest fairs in the county and characteristic for its faction fights, a large muster of Constables of Tralee and Castelisland stations were in attendance.
As may be expected, in inland areas the destruction of the potato crop is not so serious as in the coastal areas. Indeed, the accounts in town this day, a market day, from all parts are unfavourable, especially from the parishes of Ventry and Dunquin.
A Gang of Thieves -Kerry Evening Post, 10 October 1863 We learn from our local correspondent that a gang of very active thieves have infested Castleisland and its vicinity for some time past. The local police have on more than one occasion brought parties known to be members of this gang before the local Petty Sessions. However, so far they have failed to secure a conviction because of lack of evidence. Acting Constable O’Hanlon has at last managed to bring a charge for stealing money against a young fellow named Leary who was convicted at a recent Petty Sessions and sent to jail for five months. Another member of the gang, named Dooling, also got two months in jail on that occasion. Two other fellows named Murphy and Coffee are now in custody charged with stealing donkeys, mules and horses from the farmers who live in the vicinity of Castleisland. Coffee, who is supposed to be the ‘Commander-in-Chief’ was on Friday night last arrested in Kilfallany (?) in the house of a man named Griffin where he has been lurking. He was at the time armed with a long knife, having on it a brass spring – a deadly weapon. The gang are supposed to consist of a dozen members.

A Holiday in Killarney and Glengariffe. Two first class Return Tickets with Four Days Hotel Accommodation, for Sixpence. Also, a Bicycle for Sixpence – a Pony and Trap for Sixpence, 27, 28, 29 and 30th July. (Was this a scam, an advertising gimmick?).
Halla na Feothanaí
Up to six o’clock in the evening all was quiet. The above constables returned to their stations leaving the duties to the constables of the other stations who were also present. Suddenly, a conflict took place between the Quinlans and the Callaghans and terminated in a fierce engagement between the Learys and the Crowleys. It is stated that Leary was the instigator of the melee in the latter fight as he was seen rushing through the fair with a cudgel in his fist calling out the name of the faction he represented.
Annascaul Murder -Dublin Weekly News 14, September 1861 On the fifth of September a humble farmer named Fitzgerald, who lived in Coumduve, Aunascaul, (sic) was reported to have been murdered between the latter place and Castlegregory, on the mountain. The perpetrators are supposed to be three women and two men. Two of the women have been arrested by police who are still searching for the others. The daughter of the deceased was with him and attempted to protect him.

Meán Scoil Nua Bids Farewell to an Inspirational Teacher
Friday, November 10th witnessed the end of an era with the retirement of John O'Callaghan from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory. For 27 years John was at the helm of the Science Department. John started teaching Science, Biology and Mathematics in Meán Scoil in 1996 when the school was based in Cloghane before moving to the newly built school in Castlegregory in 2005. John was an inspirational teacher and instilled a love of science in his students, many of whom went on to have successful careers in the Sciences. John's role as Transition Year Programme Coordinator enabled students to expand their interests and he encouraged them to push their personal boundaries. It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a great teacher, colleague and friend. The management, staff and students of Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triuigh would like to wish John a long and very happy retirement. Gur fada buan tú, milé buiochas. Kiltallagh N.S. Flying High!
Just before midterm, on Wednesday October 25th , the entire school and staff flew to Dublin. We first visited Trinity College and enjoyed a lovely picnic in the autumnal sunshine. They then visited Dr Niall Muldoon-the Children’s Ombudsman in his office in Earlsfort Terrace and presented him with a painting of all the children’s handprints which they had worked collaboratively on during their Art Class the previous weeks. Whilst at the Ombudsman’s Office, they also gained even more knowledge concerning the rights of children and participated in a workshop with Thomas - a facilitator in the Ombudsman’s Office. Then it was time to visit Dáil Éireann where they got a tour of the Dáil and the Seanad. The real highlight of the day (apart from the flight to Dublin) was meeting with Minister for Education Norma Foley. This was a wonderful experience for the children where they got to update Minister Foley on all the amazing activities they had enjoyed since her visit to our school in April 2023. A brisk walk back to Heuston Station ensured the children had plenty of time to enjoy some nice food and spend their pocket money- prior to boarding the train home to the Kingdom. Needless to say- Supermacs and Off Beat Donuts were the biggest hits! A delightful day was had by all!

Remembering The Day President Kennedy Was Shot
came later. Naturally we were all stunned. I remember the officers’ wives crying during their evening meal”. Paddy Sheehy was digging spuds. “I remember it well. We were digging spuds in a field near the old fort known as Lios na Cheárta (The fort of the forge). It was in November and it was very late in the year to be digging spuds. Anyway, somebody came down from the house, maybe with the tea or something, and they had the story off the radio. We were really shocked. I will never forget that terrible day”. Noreen Curran was in a jungle. “I was nursing with the British Army in a place called Taiping in the jungles of Malaysia. There was a hospital there but it wasn’t a big building, just a collection of Nissan huts. I was the only operation assistant in the theatre. We got the shocking news on the radio. I think it was from the BBC Overseas Service on my little Grundig transistor radio”. Noel Brosnan was also in a hospital. “I was a patient in the County Hospital in Tralee that time when the news broke. I couldn’t believe the news. I said to people that it couldn’t be true – that it must be a mistake. I couldn’t believe that the President of the United States, with all his security, could be shot”. Séamus Ó Céilleachair was feeding the cows. “I was giving hay to the cows by the electric light in the cowshed on our farm at Baile na n-Ath. Before we got the electricity in the cowhouse we used to feed them with one person holding a lantern and the other piking the hay to them. Anyway, my mother was listening to the radio and brought the terrible news out to us.
When the news broke that President Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas, on Friday, November 22, 1963 the world was shocked beyond belief. But when word came a short time later that he had died it was worldnumbing. That was sixty years ago this week. Most people of a certain age still recall that day. West Kerry Live asked some of its readers what they remember of that event. These were some of their responses: Gene Courtney was working in Waterford.“I was in digs in Waterford with Liam Neeson’s grandmother. Liam used to call in occasionally. He was at university at that time and was an amateur boxer too. Anyway, I worked as a glass blower in Waterford Crystal and I came back to the digs that evening and the story was on the radio. It was terrible. The world wasn’t used to assassinations in those days. It was an unbelievable shock!” Máire Kelleher was in New York. “I was working in New York at the time but on that day a few of us were watching the television when suddenly there was a newsflash. Everyone was shattered and the assassination was all the talk you would hear everywhere you went for ages. The next night a few of us were going to Jaegar House, a dance venue very popular with the Irish, and we met a man from Cavan. He was shocked to hear we were going dancing and he said the place would be bombed!” Tim Collins was on Garda duty. “I was on patrol that day driving the squad car around the Cloghane-Brandon area with Sergeant Mick Concannon from Galway. Anyway, we stopped at O’Donnell’s shop, not far from the barracks at Cloghane and Mick went in to buy something. He got the news in there of the shooting and we were both shocked because Kennedy was one of ours – of Irish stock. When he visited Ireland that summer I was one of the many Gardaí drafted in to Cork City as security for his visit there. I was on the South Mall and there was a mighty crowd. They were twelve deep!” Mary Farrell was in Dublin.” I was training to be a nurse in St. Vincent’s Hospital on Stephen’s Green in Dublin. I went out with my friends that evening to a film in the Adelphi cinema. A newsflash came up on the screen about the shooting. We got an awful shock. President Kennedy was in Ireland that June and the nurses in the hospital gathered on the steps as the President and his motorcade passed by on the way to the Department of Foreign Affairs. We all waved to him”. Ted Creedon was on a ship. “I was on an oil tanker, the 34,500 ton San Conrado, in the middle of the Atlantic. We were halfway between Venezuela and Holland with a cargo of crude oil for Rotterdam. The ship’s radio officer, with the unforgettable name of Johnny B. Goode, brought the news of the shooting. Early bulletins didn’t say JFK was dead, that 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
We were shocked the same as people were everywhere, perhaps more so because there were a lot of people from the Gaeltacht in America at that time. A lot of relations were working over there”. Máire Sheehy was working with street ladies. “I was working as a civil servant with the Department of Defence in Dublin in those days. After work in the evenings I was doing street rescue work with ladies of the night for the Legion of Mary. Two of us would work together to try and persuade them to follow a different path. But I remember exactly where I heard the terrible news. I was living in a house in Cliftonville Road and about to do the Legion’s work. There was a radio somewhere near me. I was standing on the landing next to a wardrobe when the news broke. It was unbelievable!”

Milltown/Castlemaine Club Notes Milltown/Castlemaine Crowned Intermediate Football Champions
on a wonderful success. It was the 4th time in the championship that Milltown/Castlemaine beat an East Kerry team and they will now join the Senior County Football Championship ranks for 2024, the 3rd time since 2000! It is the 5th time the club have won the Intermediate Club Football Championship (1991, 1994, 2003, 2011 and 2023) and being back in the County Senior Football Championship alongside being back in Division 1 of the County League this season is what dreams are made of. Well done to all involved. Milltown/Castlemaine Captain Cathal Moriarty collected the cup on behalf of the winning side from County Board Chairperson Patrick O'Sullivan after the match and Eanna O'Connor was awarded Man of the Match following his 8th point haul for Milltown/Castlemaine. Attention now turns to the AIB Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship Semi-Final on Sunday, November 26th when Milltown/Castlemaine will meet Cill na Martra of Cork away at 1:30pm. One journey ends and another begins!

Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13 Fossa 0-18 Milltown/Castlemaine were crowned Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Football Champions on Sunday afternoon in Austin Stack Park, Tralee after a titanic battle against a David Clifford inspired Fossa, played before a bumper crowd. An epic encounter ensued in Tralee with no shortage of magic moments and 33 scores making it a terrific spectacle. Milltown/Castlemaine played with a strong breeze in the opening half and started the brighter of the two sides with early scores from Cathal Moriarty and Gavin McKenna giving the Mid Kerry side a 0-2 to 0-0 lead. David Clifford, who would finish the day with a grand total of 0-12 got Fossa off the mark in the 8th minute from a free after Pa Wren was adjudged to have fouled him. Eanna O'Connor and Brendan Casey responded well for Milltown/Castlemaine however and the lead was 0-4 to 0-1 by the 10th minute. David Clifford and Paudie Clifford kept Fossa in touch all through and knocked over two points in the 11th and 12th minutes respectively to cut the gap back to the bare minimum at 0-4 to 0-3. Eanna O'Connor was firing well at the opposite end too and a superb free followed by a '45' stretched the lead once more to three points as Milltown/Castlemaine led 0-6 to 0-3. A Fossa mistake coming out of defence gifted O'Connor a handy point from play in the 17th minute to make it a four point game but Fossa responded emphatically as points from David Clifford (2) and Emmett O'Shea had the gap back at a solitary point, 0-7 to 0-6 by the 25th minute. Eanna O'Connor and Paudie Clifford rounded off the first half scoring to leave just one between the teams at the half-time interval to leave Milltown/Castlemaine ahead 0-8 to 0-7. Fossa no doubt would have been the happier of the two teams at this point having played against a stiff breeze. Whilst the first half might have been considered cagey as both teams wanted to stay in the contest, the second half was riveting with both sides going all out for the win. David Clifford 26 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
levelled the contest in the 32nd minute with a close range free and soon after he gave the East Kerry side the lead for the first time all afternoon at 0-9 to 0-8. The Milltown/Castlemaine response was crucial however as a barnstorming run through the heart of the Fossa defence by Gavin Horan was met with an exquisite finish to the top corner of the Fossa net by Brendan Casey. Emmett O'Shea and David Clifford had the sides back level by the 42nd minute with two pointed efforts for Fossa but Milltown/Castlemaine were back in the lead moments later as substitute Jonathan O'Sullivan with two well taken scores and Eanna O'Connor had the lead at 1-11 to 0-11 by the 45th minute. Emmett O'Shea with his third point and Eanna O'Connor with his seventh exchanged points in the 46th and 47th minutes respectively before Harry Buckley and Eanna O'Connor swapped scores in the 48th and 49th minutes to leave a goal between the teams at 1-13 to 0-13. David Clifford with three points on the trot had the teams level at 1-13 to 0-16 by the 55th minute and with his 11th point of the day gave Fossa the lead at 0-17 to 1-13 in the 58th minute. Cometh the hour and cometh the man however as Brendan Casey once again popped up with a pivotal goal in the 59th minute following a superb run through the middle by Cillian Burke to put Milltown/Castlemaine back ahead 2-13 to 0-17. David Clifford reduced the gap to the bare minimum again in the 61st minute as he rounded off his afternoon's work with his 12th point, it was now 2-13 to 0-18 and this was the way it would finish as despite Fossa having two further chances, both went wide, their only wides all game and referee Brendan Griffin called a halt to proceedings in the 66th minute following six additional minutes being played. An incredible game of football that ebbed and flowed and it could have gone either way. Fossa led twice all day (both times in the 2nd half) but Milltown/Castlemaine got their goals at the right times and ultimately that was the difference. As the saying goes, Goals win games and that was the decisive factor on Sunday afternoon in Tralee. Congratulations to the players and management

Castlemaine Fair Day Cheque Presentation to Kerry Hospice Castlemaine Events Committee are very pleased to announce that the money raised from the Castlemaine Fair Day in Memory of John O’Donoghue which was held in October has amounted to €15,859,69. The revival of the Castlemaine Fair Day started in 2021 in John’s memory and to date over the three years, the charity event has raised a combined total of €75,541.46 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The location of the Fair was in Griffin's Car Park, Castlemaine and it was a terrific success with the good weather drawing people from near and far to the event. There was plenty of family entertainment on the day outside of the Fair itself including an Auction, amusements, stalls and live music amongst others. On Friday evening last, November 17th in Griffin’s Bar and Restaurant Castlemaine, the proceeds of the 2023 Fair Day were unveiled and presented to Kerry Hospice Foundation by family members, close friends and the Castlemaine Events Committee to the very deserving Kerry Hospice Foundation who provided exemplary care and support to John and his family following a shock diagnosis of terminal bowel cancer in May 2019. John O’Donoghue who was known all over resided in the heart of Castlemaine Village and was born

on January 21st, 1965 which ironically happened to coincide with a staging of the old Castlemaine Fair Day so it felt appropriate to mark John’s lifetime love of attending fairs and being an integral part of the farming community by bringing back the old fair day in his honour and with it celebrate old traditions, customs and beliefs in the locality. Castlemaine Events Committee were delighted to be able to assist in the organisation of the event and all proceeds raised were given to
Kerry Hospice Foundation. All the committee wish to sincerely thank the public for their generosity in supporting the event in John's memory. Special mention also to everyone who helped in any way towards the safe running of the event. There is too many to name but without a doubt the community spirit was there to be seen in abundance in preparing for the Fair and for the clean-up operation after. Castlemaine Events Committee are so very grateful for all the efforts involved.

Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige Teo won the ‘Islands and Coastal Communities’ category at the awards with the judges commenting: “This charming coastal community is well served by a group providing a fantastic array of services that impacts on the whole population in Dingle.” The Dingle social enterprise was nominated by Kerry County Council to represent the county in the All-Ireland competition – an initiative of the peace building charity, Cooperation Ireland - having won gold and been announced overall winner at the Kerry Community Awards in May. Beef Casserole with Herb and Cheese Scones Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School
Once all the beef has browned, remove this from the pot and reserve for later. Turn the heat down and add a little oil. Add the onions and bacon, cook for about 5 minutes, add the garlic and cook for about 2-3 minutes, add the leeks, carrots, thyme and bay leaf. Continue to cook this slowly for about 5-8 minutes. Return the beef to the pot and add the tomato puree. Cook this for a minute or so, add the wine and reduce by half. Add the stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Place the lid on and put this in the oven for about 2 hours. for the scones You can make these while the casserole is cooking.
This is one of my favourite recipes for wintertime. Everytime I cook this I always promise myself that I must cook it more. It is a hearty stew and that has been cooked slow to leave you with mouth-watering beef in a rich sauce but the real treat is the addition of herb and cheese scones that are added and then baked once the stew is cooked. They are added to the top of the stew, you turn up the heat and put the casserole dish back in the oven for 20-25 minutes. The bottom of each scone will have the delicious texture of a dumpling and the top will resemble a crusty pie topping. Make plenty, I am sure you will go back for seconds. INGREDIENTS for the casserole rapeseed oil 500g of diced beef (ideally from the chuck) 1 tbsp. of flour 1 onion, sliced garlic cloves, sliced 150g of smoked bacon, cut into chunks 1 leek, white part cleaned and sliced 2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
In a bowl add the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix this then add in the butter. Rub in this in until it forms a sandy texture. Add in most of the grated cheese and all of the herbs. Mix this in, add the milk and bring this to a dough (this can be all done in a mixer or by hand). Cover this with cling film and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. When ready, roll out the dough to about 4cm thick. Use a round cutters to cut scones from the dough. Turn the heat up to 180ºC Once the casserole is cooked and the meat is tender, remove from the oven, place the scones on top of the casserole. Brush with the egg wash and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Place this in the oven for about 25 minutes without the lid. The scones should be brown and cooked through. Bain Taitneamh As!

An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta 2023 A chairde agus a chomharsana, Gabhaim buíochas ó chroí i dtús báire le Louis Mulcahy, eisean a chaith isteach an chaid an chéad lá, tráth ar cuireadh an Fhéile Bheag Filíochta ar an bhfód. Tá pobal na héigse buíoch beannachtach don gcoiste díograiseach, do Chaitríona (Ní Chathail), John (Prendergast), Justin (Mac Cárthaigh), Mícheál (Ó hUamhnacháin), Orla (Ní Shíthigh) agus Simon (Ó Faoláin), an mheitheal a stiúrann an fhéile. Ba mhaith liom anocht dearcadh pearsanta ar chúrsaí filíochta a roinnt libh. Ag an scríbhneoir ábalta, bíonn an teanga á láimhseáil go stuama is á cur in oiriúint chun a shaol féin agus saol na linne a scrúdú, a shoiléiriú agus a thuiscint. De thoradh machnamh tomhaiste tagann an t-údar ar an bhfriotal beacht cruinn agus deineann dán a thugann léargas dúinn, go fiú léargas na cruinne ar uairibh. Ó am go chéile bíonn guth draíochtúil agus línte neamhshaolta le clos, domhan éigin eile agus saol eile feicthe ag an bhfile, ní leis na súile cinn ach le súil inmheánach. Léimeann splanc nó geit ionam agus plúr na filíochta á léamh. Éiríonn smaointe agus línte uaisle ar eití is mothaím ardú meanman. Seo a leanas roinnt pointí tagartha a bheadh oiriúnach dóibh siúd a ghabhann i mbun pinn, ar an dtaobh seo tíre, ach go háirithe, pé acu trí mheán na Gaelainne, nó an Bhéarla, a scríobhtar. Luíonn an cúram ar ár gcuid údar an teanga a chaomhnú agus ar uaireanta í a mhúnlú, go fiú í a chruthú. Téann an dúlra agus dreach na tíre go mór i bhfeidhm ar an bhfilíocht. Labhrann Cnoc Bréanainn, Cruach Mhárthain, an cósta taibhseach is na hoileáin mhara. Tugann na scríbhneoirí guth agus teanga don dúlra, is don draíocht a bhaineann leis. Sleamhnaíonn an seanashaol uainn de réir a chéile ach bíonn an deis ann stair na tíre mar aon le dúchas agus cuimhní na muintire a thabhairt i láthair. De réir taighde na seandálaithe, is i gCuan a’ Chaoil ansúd thiar, breis agus sé mhíle bliain ó shin, a lonnaigh roinnt des na daoine ba luaithe go bhfios dúinn a chuir fúthu sa dúthaigh seo. Tá saothair fhileata againn, idir úr agus ársa, atá bunaithe ar Chlanna Mhíle, mar a thángadar siúd i dtír, ar a seal, i mBá na Scealg, dánta atá fréamhaithe sa scéal seanchais agus sna seaniarsmaí. Thug filí na seachtú haoise déag cuntais ar an díshealbhú, is ar an scrios a deineadh ar chultúr na nGael, Dáibhí Ó Bruadair is Aogán Ó Rathaille ina measc. San ochtú céad déag tugadh éachtaint ar an gcóilíneacht a lean an briseadh, ag a léithéidí Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin agus Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill. Ba dhiail an gaisce é lenár linn dá scríobhfaí annálacha an lae inniu, mar ní bhíonn in aon ní ach seal. Fúinn féin atá sé. Is ceart agus is cuí aird a thabhairt ar na leachtanna cuimhneacháin, ar Log na nGallán in Arda Mór, Íochtar Cua ó dheas agus Geata an Ghlas Ghaibhnigh anso thuas ar Mhárthain. ’Sé sin le rá, ní mór aitheantas agus ómós a thabhairt do na sinsir romhainn, do na tuiscintí agus na luachanna a bhíodh acusan tráth dá raibh. Foinse na gaoise atá sna seanfhocail, agus tobar na teanga lena chois sin. ‘Is deacair an seanfhocal a shárú’ a deirtear. Bíonn an deis againn scéalta, béaloideas, mórtas agus finscéalta an cheantair a sheachadadh go dtí an chéad ghlúin eile. Dar liom féin baineann tábhacht ar leith leis na logainmneacha. Muna gcuirtear ar aghaidh ó ghlúin go glúin iad, ní fhágfar le huacht ag sliocht ár sleachta ach ainmneacha áite atá gan bhrí ar bith i mBéarla, an croí is an anam bainte díobh in éagmais na Gaelainne. Bíonn na filí i measc chaomhnóirí an traidisiúin cé go bhfuil an cúram ar sciar áirithe acu smidiríní a dhéanamh de na múnlaí seanbhunaithe agus de nósmhaireacht na litríochta. Thug an scríbhneoireacht an deis domsa mo ghuth a aimsiú is mé fhéin a chur in iúl. Níl de dhualgas ar an bhfile riamh ach labhairt leis an nguth úd, cé ná fuil aon ní sa chruinne ché nach ábhar don fhilíocht é i ndeireadh an lae. Cuimhním anocht ar bheirt, údair agus filí a bhí fréamhaithe go docht daingean i gcroílár an phobail as ar fáisceadh iad - Domhnall Mac Síthigh a d’imigh uainn roimh aois, agus Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Beannacht na ngrást leo is le hanaman na marbh. Glór an dúchais ab ea Danny, reacaire deisbhéalach na muintire, agus b’amhlaidh na buanna ’bhí ag 38 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
an bhFiannachtach, fear a thaithigh lár na páirce imeartha. Ba dhiail ar fad na scríbhinní a bhfuaireamar le hoidhreacht uathu. Ach níl aon teora leis an éagsúlacht. Bíonn údair eile ann agus an mianach iontu fanacht ar an dtaobhlíne, ar imeall an tsaoil, cuid éigin acu scartha go maith ar chúiseanna áirithe ón ngeilleagar, ón tsochaí is ón gcóras sóisialta, ach leis an deighilt sin ón dtréad tugtar dearcadh tairbheach anois agus arís ar a bhfuil ag titim amach ar an saol mór. Sa ré ina mbíonn gach uile ní ag brostú fé dheabhadh is fé dheifir agus tuairimí an domhain á mbrú orainn gan faoiseamh, b’fhiú go mór fada go mbeadh spás inmheánach agus fairsinge aigne ag an bhfile ar mhaithe le fírinní na saolta seo a fhiosrú ar a shuaimhneas. Sa dán The Old Poets of China, deir Mary Oliver:‘Pé áit a mbím, leanann an domhan sa tóir orm, a chuid fuadair á tairiscint dom. Ní chreideann sé nach bhfuil sin uaim. Anois a thuigim cén fáth gur ghaibh seanfhilí na Síne chomh fada is chomh hard isteach sna sléibhte is gur shleamhnaíodar leo sa cheo geal bán.’ Éist le glór na habhann is gheobhair breac. Do labhair an file Rúmí faoin éisteacht dhoimhin: ‘I bhfeothan na héisteachta seo fásann duilleoga úrnua ar chraobhacha do thuisceana.’ ‘Is beannacht í an éigse ó sprideanna ceilte an chroí.’ Ó am go ham, sa chiúineas, tagann an Bhé ar ár dtuairisc agus bíogann preab na hinspioráide chomh maith le féith na filíochta. Tuigeann an file saolú, rathú, bláthú, síorathrú ar an uile ní, feo, creimeadh, seargadh, síothlú, athnuachan agus claochlú. Cothaíonn agus caomhnaíonn an file. Cuireann sí friotal is brí ar an uile ní. Go raibh maith agaibh. Tá Féile Bheag Filíochta na bliana seo ar oscailt. - Peadar Ó hUallaigh Tá Coiste na Féile Bige Filíochta ana-bhuíoch do Pheadar Ó hUallaigh, file, as Féile Bheag Filíochta 2023 a oscailt go hoifigiúil ar an 10 Samhain 2023.

The AGM of the Camp branch of the Irish Farmers Assoc was held at Tom Griffin's Farm, Beheenagh on Thursday night last. Kenny Jones, Chairman of the County Executive, attended. A discussion took place on farming issues, schemes update. The branch election of National Officers was held. Dogs on hills worrying sheep is a big problem. Meeting called for a Dog Database and agreed that this is urgently needed. Three members of the Executive, Tom Griffin, Jackie Murphy and Jack Crean celebrated birthdays in the past months and a beautiful cake made by Catherine Fitzmaurice (Tom's daughter) to mark the occasion was presented on the night. Congratulations all, may you be blessed with many more years of good health and happiness.

Cromane GAA: SENIORS: Mid Kerry SFC quarterfinal: Cromane 0-4, Laune Rangers 3-15 Laune Rangers eventually cruised into the last four of the Mid Kerry championship with a comprehensive win in a windy Cromane last Sunday afternoon. Our lads had most of the play in the first half when we played with the aid of a strong wind but some errant shooting meant we trailed by two at the break: Cromane 0-4, Laune Rangers 0-6. Highlights of the first half for Cromane were two excellent long-range points from Sean O'Sullivan and Tony Duffy. Darren Houlihan also converted a difficult long-range free. Laune Rangers, on the other hand, worked themselves into good scoring positions through good interchanging of passes with Cian O'Shea, Gearoid Hassett, and Daire Cleary converting for points.
Notaí an Clochán Bréanainn
Laune Rangers were in pole position at this stage with the substantial boost of wind advantage to come. They used the conditions well and Cromane failed to score in the second half. We battled throughout and trailed by 0-12 to 0-4 with ten minutes left. However, the winners embellished the scoreline in the last quarter when they hit 3-3 without reply. The goals came from substitute John Burke, Gearoid Hassett, and Rory O'Connor. A tough end (especially the last quarter of the second half) to the year for our seniors. The club would like to thank all the players, and the management, that represented our senior team in 2023. Scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 0-2 (0-1 free); Tony Duffy 0-1, Darren Houlihan 0-1 free. Team: Darragh Crosby; Eanna Healy, Conor Sugrue, Liam O’Neill; Finbar Casey, Donnchadh Walsh, Joshua O’Sullivan; Darren Houlihan, Darragh McKeefry; Danny Shea, Mikey Houlihan, Tony Duffy; Jason O’Connor, Sean O’Sullivan, Aidan O’Sullivan. Sub: Cian Lyons. MEDAL NIGHT: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/ Cromane (GGC) under-13s and under-15s received the numerous medals that they won during a very successful year last Friday evening. Many thanks to those who organised the night for these young players. Between the two sides, some players won six of the eight competitions that they competed in. It was a phenomenal year and it was a mighty night in The Glenbeigh Hotel.
present the medals to our young players. To all who organise our underage games and coach our teams we appreciate what you do for our club: thank you. APPRECIATION NIGHT: Cromane GAA Club will hold a club appreciation night for all our underage trainers and for those who help out every week at our lotto draws. Corca Dhuibhne leads the way in Irish representation joining new colleagues and associations from Iceland, The Netherlands, Finland, and Poland. Go n-éirí libh to all the participating businesses. Feirm na nAinmhithe le
George Orwell aistrithe ag Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh foilsithe ag
Coiscéim ‘Tá na hainmhithe ar Fheirm an Mhainéir ag fulaingt le fada faoi thíorántacht an fheirmeora Ó Ceallaigh. Tá súil acu le saol eile, áfach, an fheirm a bheith faoi cheannas na n-ainmhithe féin, saor ó smacht na ndaoine. Éiríonn siad amach, cuireann siad an feirmeoir chun bóthair, agus glacann siad seilbh ar an bhfeirm. Feirm na nAinmhithe a tugtar uirthi anois, gach ainmhí comhionann agus ag obair le chéile. An féidir leo an aisling a choinneáil beo? Nó an bhfuil rud eile ar fad ar intinn ag na muca, b’fhéidir...? Tá taitneamh á bhaint le blianta fada as scéal iontach George Orwell faoi réabhlóid na n-ainmhithe, agus ceachtanna le baint as maidir le réabhlóidí eile. Anois tá Feirm na nAinmhithe le léamh i nGaeilge álainn anseo. Tá scríbhinní le Orwell faoi chúlra an leabhair le fáil mar aguisín, chomh maith le hiarfhocal ag an aistritheoir Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh a fhiosraíonn polaitíocht an scéil.’ - Coiscéim An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Mo leath-scéal má tá aon duine fágtha ar lár agam. Bhí cúpla buaiteoir ná raibh ábalta bheith i láthair.
