Revitalize Your Gut: Exploring the 4R and 5R Approaches to Gut Health
Irene FlanneryGut health has become a hot topic in recent years, and for good reason. A well-functioning gut is essential for overall health, influencing everything from digestion to immunity and even mental health. Two popular strategies to achieve optimal gut health are the 4R and 5R approaches. These approaches are designed to restore balance to your digestive system, alleviate common gut-related issues, and promote long-term wellness. Let's dive into what these approaches entail, the problems they solve, and how you can integrate them into your daily routine.
The 4R Approach
The 4R approach is a systematic method to restore gut health, consisting of four key steps: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, and Repair.
Remove
The first step in the 4R approach is to remove harmful substances that negatively affect the gut. This includes pathogens like harmful bacteria, yeast, and parasites, as well as environmental toxins, common food allergens such as gluten, dairy, and soy, and foods that cause inflammation, such as processed foods and artificial additives. Implementing dietary changes is crucial during this phase. An elimination diet helps identify and remove common allergens and irritants, while natural or prescribed antimicrobials can address infections. This phase typically lasts 2-4 weeks. For breakfast, consider a smoothie with almond milk, spinach, berries, and a scoop of protein powder. A grilled chicken salad with olive oil and lemon dressing makes a great lunch, while baked salmon with steamed vegetables can be enjoyed for dinner.
Replace
The second step is to replace essential digestive elements that may be lacking. This involves restoring digestive enzymes that assist in breaking down food, hydrochloric acid (HCl) which is essential for protein digestion and absorption, and bile acids that aid in the digestion and absorption of fats. Supplements can be taken with meals to provide these essential elements, and foods like pineapple (which contains bromelain) and ginger can naturally support digestion. This phase usually lasts 4-6 weeks. Meal ideas include Greek yogurt with honey and a sprinkle of flaxseeds for breakfast, quinoa salad with avocado, cucumber, and a lemon vinaigrette for lunch, and stir-fried beef and vegetables with a side of kimchi for dinner. Reinoculate
The third step is to reinoculate the gut with beneficial bacteria. This involves reintroducing probiotics, which are live beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods and supplements, and prebiotics, non-digestible fibres that feed beneficial bacteria, found in foods like garlic, onions, and bananas. High-quality probiotic supplements and fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and miso can be incorporated into your diet. This phase typically lasts 4-6 weeks. For breakfast, consider a kefir smoothie with mixed berries and a banana. Lentil soup with a side of sauerkraut makes a great lunch, while tofu stir-fry with mixed vegetables and miso soup can be enjoyed for dinner.
Repair
The final step in the 4R approach is to repair and maintain the integrity of the gut lining. This involves using nutrients like L-glutamine, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E, as well as herbs like aloe vera, slippery elm, and marshmallow root. Targeted supplements can support gut lining repair, and nutrient-dense foods should be included in your diet. This phase typically lasts 4-8 weeks. Meal ideas include oatmeal topped with chia seeds and blueberries for breakfast, spinach and kale salad with grilled chicken, pumpkin seeds, and a turmeric dressing for lunch, and bone broth-based soup with vegetables and quinoa for dinner.
The 5R Approach
The 5R approach builds on the 4R approach by adding a fifth crucial step: Rebalance.
Rebalance
The goal of the rebalance step is to address lifestyle factors that impact gut health. This involves stress management, incorporating practices like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises; ensuring adequate and quality sleep; and engaging in regular physical activity to support overall health. Daily mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can help manage stress. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a restful environment are important for good sleep hygiene. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. This step is ongoing and should be integrated as part of a healthy lifestyle. A typical morning routine could start with a short meditation and a nutrient-dense breakfast. Include short breaks for stretching and deep breathing exercises throughout your daily schedule, and wind down with a relaxing activity like reading or a warm bath before bed.
Achievements and Benefits
Implementing the 4R or 5R approach can lead to significant improvements in gut health and overall well-being. These approaches can improve digestion, reducing symptoms like bloating, gas, and indigestion. A healthy gut microbiome supports a robust immune system. The gut-brain axis plays a crucial role in mental health, with a balanced gut contributing to reduced anxiety and depression. Improved nutrient absorption can lead to higher energy levels and reduced fatigue.
Despite the overwhelming body of evidence that supports these approaches we must acknowledge that no two guts are the same and results will vary from person to person. There is still a lot of sense here and practical steps you can take to get a better understanding of your own digestive system. By following the 4R or 5R approach, you can take proactive steps towards achieving and maintaining optimal gut health. Remember, consistency is key, and integrating these steps into your daily routine can lead to long-lasting benefits. Start small, make gradual changes and listen to your body. Your gut will thank you!

Starved to death
- Tralee Chronicle, 18 May 1850
An inquest was held some days since, by Justin Supple, Coroner, attended by Dr. Harold who carried out a post-mortem on the body of a poor man named John Sullivan. He had been found dead by John Twiss between Scartaglin and Castleisland.
He took the body in his jaunting car to Kilsarcon, near Killarney. The Relieving Officer was unable to provide a coffin for the deceased and so he was buried in his clothes.
The post-mortem showed that the man’s stomach was completely devoid of food. The jury found that the deceased came by his death by disease of one of his lungs, accelerated by destitution and exhaustion
(A sad story – no one to look after him.)
Robberies in Tarbert
- Tralee Chronicle, 28 September 1850
On last Monday night the shop of Mr. Charles Egan in this town was broken into through a window and several articles taken. Among them was a large roll of tobacco, which led to the detection of the thief.
His name was Connor and he was apprehended by the police while trying to dispose of the tobacco in a Limerick village.
A very short time since the same shop was broken into and Mr. Egan fired on the would-be thieves. He succeeded in arresting one of them but then the thief escaped justice because of a flaw in the indictment.
Another robbery was attempted in Tarbert last week. The focus of the break-in was the corn store of Mr. Speight. The alarm was raised and the thieves took off empty handed.
Four dead babies
- Killarney correspondent of the Tralee Chronicle, 18 May 1850
A woman whose name is Fleming, who lives in the parish of Aglish, near Milltown, gave birth to 4 children in the past week. Unfortunately all of the children have died. The mother is still living but no hopes of her recovery
All hands lost in Dingle Bay wreck
- Globe, 08 October 1889
A report from Caherciveen describes the wreck of the Belfast schooner Zuleika in Dingle Bay yesterday. In tempestuous weather she drove on a reef three miles north of Caherciveen and rapidly went to pieces. Sad to report that all hands were drowned.
The only part of the vessel which remained intact was the deck cabin which was washed up on a beach yesterday morning. A local coast guard officer examined the cabin and found a letter which was addressed to William Mulholland from his father, dated Belfast April 15.
The body of a man of splendid physique with dark hair, around 35 years of age, was washed ashore. His face was so disfigured from being bashed off rocks that he was completely unidentifiable. It was supposed he was the captain.
(The Zuleika was built in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1866, according to shipping records).
Thousands watch public hanging in Tralee
- Tipperary Free Press, 01 September 1853
Last Saturday, at 2 minutes to 1 o’clock, a man named Sheehan underwent the extreme penalty of the law when he faced the drop in public in front of the County Gaol. It is humiliating and painful to add that the hanging was witnessed by over three thousand people who thronged from the town and countryside to witness the demoralising spectacle.

Honouring the Kerry Women of the Revolutionary Period
Kerry County Council is to invite expressions of interest next week for the commissioning and development of a commemorative and artistic piece which will honour the role played by women in Kerry during the revolutionary period between 1912 and 1923.
The project follows a joint motion by the five female members of Kerry County Council who called for the development and commissioning of a meaningful and lasting commemorative piece which would reflect the significant and diverse roles and activities of women and their involvement in the campaign for Irish Independence at the beginning of the twentieth century.
A Working Group, including the five female councillors, has been developing a design brief, and the Council intends to publish a detailed brief for the memorial next week and expressions of interest will be invited.

Is féidir sampla de seo a chlos ach ' corncrake call ' a chuardach ar YouTube.

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Má bhí ábhar mí-shásaimh ag lucht tacaíochta na gCiarraíoch an uair deireanach go rabhamar ag caint orthu, ní hamhlaidh an tseachtain seo. In ionad droch-scéala faoi chailliúint cluichí, tá deathoradh againn. Agus ní dea-thoradh amháin atá againn, ach péire, mór an t-iontas.
Féachaimis ar na cluichí ceann ar cheann. Coicíos ó shin, b'iad Cláirsigh na Finne ó Thír Conaill a bhí ar cuairt i dTrá Lí, agus cé nach raibh aon chúl sa chéad leath, níorbh fhada tar éis atosú an imeartha gur éirigh le Ryan Kelliher an liathróid a chur san eangach lena cheann.
Tugtar creidiúint an dara chúil do Daniel Okwute, ach cé gur leisean an buille a tharraing ci cosanta ó Shane McMonagle, phreab an liathróid ar imreoir na Ríochta agus ar ais sa chúl. Bíodh san aige, mar is mó iarracht leis a chuaigh ar strae dá ainneoin!
Dhá chúl chun tosaigh agus leathuair fós le n-imirt, ar ócáidí eile ghéill muintir Thrá Lí comhscór san nóiméid deireanacha, ach chloí siad leis an tasc a bhí rompu an uair seo, agus d'éirigh leo na cosa a thabhairt leo go deireadh.
Trí phointe tuillte don chéad uair le tamall, agus seo leo an Aoine dar gcionn go dtí oirthear Chorcaí agus baile an Chóibh. Ní raibh an t-ádh céanna leo an uair seo, agus d'éirigh leis na Fánaithe dallamullóg a chur orthu, trí chic saor a ghlacadh an-tapaidh, sara raibh aga ag na cuairteoirí ullmhú chuige, an-luath sa chluiche.
Cleas é sin ná hoibríonn ró-mhinic, agus titeann na foirne is clúití sa ghaiste sin ó am go céile. Cé gur imríodh feall ar Okwute sa chearnóg déanach go maith san imirt, ní fhaca an Réiteoir aon chúis cic éirice a bhronnadh.
Agus cluiche breise ar an Luan saoire bainc, ar ais ag baile agus na comharsana ó Luimneach chucu i gCnocán an Iolair. Níorbh é an cluiche ba shlachtmhaire riamh acu é, agus tar éis go bhfuair Kennedy Amechi an chéad chúl agus gan ach naoi nóiméad imeartha, ba léir gur chuir sé strus ar mhatán agus b'éigean fear ionaid a chur isteach ina áit.
Ní ró-thógtha a bhí an pobal leis an Réiteoir ar an ócáid seo, agus facthas dóibh go bhfuair na cuairteoirí buntáiste ar bith a bhí le fáil uaidh. Bhí mí-ádh ar chosantóir Treaty Evan O'Connor, a chuir an liathróid thar a chúlbáire féin, rud a d'fhág buntáiste luachmhar ag an bhfoireann baile, buntáiste a raibh gá acu leis roimh an deireadh.
Bhí amhras ar a lán arbh fheall éirice a thug seans d'Enda Curran léas beag dóchais a thabhairt do Treaty lena chic ón spota, ach níor leor é, agus díbríodh an fear céanna sna nóiméid deireanacha.
Bain lán-sásamh as na torthaí is déanaí. Beith ar na himreoirí bheith airdeallach agus díograiseach chun an leibhéal sin feabhais a choinneáil sna seachtainí atá romhainn. Níl an séasúr ach leathchríochnaithe go fóill!

Cruinniú na nÓg
Cruinniú na nÓg is taking place all over Ireland on Saturday 15th June with a programme of FREE creative celebrations for children and young people. Emma Carmody, Kerry’s Creative Communities Engagement Officer, supported by the Arts Office team has coordinated 72 free events throughout the county. ‘Creative events are offered, for free, for children and young people ages 0-18’, stated Emma, ‘We are thrilled with the level of activity and the variety of creative fun filled activity on offer’.
Earlier in the year, the Arts Office at Kerry County Council carried out an extensive consultation with many young people in Kerry to see what they wanted to see in this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg - and their feedback has informed this year’s programme. Nationally, Cruinniú na nÓg has issued a call out for young people to ‘Dare to create’. The Kerry Creative Ireland Office issued an open call for artists and creatives to respond with ideas too for Cruinniú na nÓg. Emma advised that, ‘The 72 events reflect the creative skills sector in Kerry and the interests of our youth’. There is something for all ages and creative interests in this year’s programme including an art for all workshop in Tigh Áine, an interactive craft and drama event in Dingle library, while the Díseart hosts a number of events.
SEAL RESCUE TRAINING
“I am delighted to see so many quality events on offer, for free, to allow children and young people have time to enjoy a creative event,” stated Arts Officer & Creative Ireland Coordinator, Kate Kennelly, ‘Hopefully many families and young people will take up what is on offer and enjoy finding a connection with creativity’.
The brochure for all events for Kerry is available to download on: https://arts.kerrycoco.ie/wpcontent/uploads/2024/05/Cruinniu-na-nOgKerry-Brochure-2024.pdf
and all events are listed on the national Creative Ireland website at: https://cruinniu.creativeireland. gov.ie/events/location/kerry/

For the tomato salad
1 red onion, diced
3 tomatoes, diced
½ cucumber, diced
few leaves of mint, sliced
1 lime, juiced
extra virgin oil

Let this cook slowly for a few minutes then add the onions and continue to cook, add the chilli, tomatoes and tomato puree. Stir in the turmeric and pinch of salt. Add the aubergine back to the pot, cover and cook for about 15-20 minutes. For the yogurt, mix the ingredients together. For the salad, mix the ingredients together and season well.

OBITUARY
The news of the death of Mossy Joe Quirke, Deelis, Camp on 21st May was received with great shock and sadness by all of the community. Mossie Joe was very popular, he was a great story teller, and a good friend and neighbour to many of us. Classmates and friends at Camp National School and CBS, The Green have fond memories of Mossy Joe, who was a very clever student as well as being a great character.
Mossy Joe was a great worker. He began his career in the Civil Service working in the Customs and Excise, however it was in the building trade that he made his mark in our community. Indeed, Mossy Joe could turn his hand to anything.
A great community volunteer too, members of Camp Community Council and Vintage and others formed a guard of honour outside the church and again at the graveyard as the funeral cortege passed as a mark of respect to Mossy Joe.
At his funeral Mass among the symbols of his life brought to the altar were his car keys, Mossy Joe was always on the road calling into his family and friends. His granddaughter Emma played a lovely tune on the tin whistle at her grandfather's funeral Mass on Friday. A lovely tribute to her grandfather who drove her to music classes every week. Mossy Joe was a devoted grandfather and he was very proud of all of his family.
He was predeceased by his daughter Therese. Sadly missed by his family his wife Nora, children Andrew, Declan, Maurice, Michael, Raymond, Mary Ellen, sister Joan, brothers Micheal, Patrick, Sean, Thomas, Gerard, Martin, his twelve grandchildren, great grand-daughter, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, son-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Sympathy is extended to all.
Rest In Peace, Mossy Joe, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

LOCAL ELECTION CANDIDATE CORCA DHUIBHNE ELECTORAL AREA
Local Archaeology:
Clocha Oghaim / Ogham Stones, Baile an Reannaigh
Isabel BennettCé nach bhfuil ach an t-aon chloch Oghaim amháin le feiscint anois i mBaile an Reannaigh, is anseo a fuarthas ocht gcinn de chlocha Oghaim, agus a thuilleadh iarsmaí, tar éis stoirme, breis is dhá chéad bliain ó shin. Tá roinnt acu le feiscint anois ar an mbóthar isteach go dtí Coláiste Íde (talamh príobháideach é seo), agus tógadh dhá cheann eile go Chute Hall, atá in aice le Trá Lí. Tá an baile fearainn féin, Baile an Reannaigh, in aice le Tráigh an Fhíona agus le trá Chúl Dorcha, agus tá an chloch ana-ghairid do Shlí Chorca Dhuibhne. Is ar na clocha Oghaim atá an scríbhneoireacht is ársa a mhaireann den nGaelainn. Agus is i gCorca Dhuibhne atá an bailiúchán is dlúithe de na clocha oghaim. Tá thart ar 60 cloch sa cheantar.
This issue we will look at one of the many ogham stones which can be visited on the Dingle Peninsula, that which is situated beside the sea just off the Slí Chorca Dhuibhne in the townland of Baile an Reannaigh, not far from the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Originally 8 ogham stones were discovered here, exposed, it seems, along with other features and burials during a storm towards the end of the 18th century. Several of the ogham stones are now to be seen on the avenue into Coláiste Íde (formerly ‘Burnham House’), which is private property, and two were removed to the grounds of Chute Hall, near Tralee. The inscription on the stone which is still in situ
on the site (although was not always standing) seems to read ‘CUNAMAQQI CORBBI MAQQ(I MUCCOI DOVVINIA)S’. A loose translation might be ‘Cuna the son of Corbbi the son of the family of Dovinia’. This inscription is particularly interesting as it is one of a few which indicate that the person commemorated is a descendant of the goddess Dovinia, the deity from whom the people of the Corca Dhuibhne tribe descend, and whose name is preserved in the Irish name for the peninsula right up to the present day.
Ogham stones are found mainly in the south of Ireland, in the counties of Kerry, Cork and Waterford, but the greatest concentration is here in Corca Dhuibhne, with over 60 known examples. The letters were carved using a grouping of between one and five notches or strokes usually on the edge of the stone, each group signifying a sound in old Irish. The inscriptions can signify a single name, or a phrase such as ‘X son of Y of the family of Z’, similar to the inscriptions on the Baile an
Reannaigh stone. The inscriptions can date from the end of the 4th up to the 8th century AD.
Several other locally discovered ogham stones (on loan from the National Museum of Ireland) are on display in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle, www.westkerrymuseum.com). The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.30 pm. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@ westkerrymuseum.com. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers.
Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caifé agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá, 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Dingle Notes
Richie WilliamsVOTING. Elections are in the news again so its a good time to remind ourselves about the two purposes of voting. Firstly we try to ensure that we will be governed by those who share our views and values and secondly we seek to elect those who are most likely to govern us well during the term of their period in office. So know your candidates and their policies and dont forget to cast your vote not alone in this but every election.
GARDA TEXT ALERT SERVICE. This Free Service for the will be used to provide the public with Crime Prevention Advice and Safety Information and to seek public assistance in solving crimes that may occur in the Dingle Area. Their work is along the theme of Biodiversity and was researched in class before the manual effort was undertaken in the last few weeks leading up the end of the school term. It is hoped that further art work along the lane may be undertaken which should help rejuvenate another area off the town centre which is frequented used by both locals and visitors. Comhgairdeachas Libh Go Leir.

Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. Everybody welcome. SPORT. DINGLE PENINSULA SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY PATHFINDER SURVEY
“Your Journey Counts – Scaip an Scéal!”
Is féidir le gach duine a ghlaonn baile nó tarna bhaile ar Chorca Dhuibhne, nó díreach gur bhreá leo turas a thabhairt ann go minic, a bheith istigh le seans chun rothar leictreach nó córas 2kW painéil ghréine PV a bhuachaint, díreach trí pháirt a ghlacadh i suirbhé.
Everyone who calls the Dingle Peninsula home, their second home or just a place they love to visit can be in with a chance of winning an electric bike or a 2kW solar PV system - simply by taking part in a survey.
Dingle Hub, in conjunction with Corca Dhuibhne Community Forum, wants to give
people more choice on how they get around the Dingle Peninsula. It’s part of a Government initiative, supported by Kerry County Council, to lower emissions, combat climate change and improve safety on our roads.
Project leader, Deirdre de Bhailís, of Dingle Hub says community involvement is crucial and this is why she is asking everyone to be involved by participating in the survey.
Deirdre explains: “This is part of the Corca Dhuibhne National Sustainable Mobility Pathfinder project which aims to identify and advocate for easy, affordable, and integrated travel options that suit everyone’s needs in a rural area.
“Your participation on this survey will help shape the design of viable options to reduce our dependency on private cars.
“It will also help cut emissions supporting climate action goals and help to improve quality of life for everyone on the peninsula,” Deirdre said.
The survey has been developed and will be analysed by a team of UCD researchers working on the transport strand of the Next Generation Energy Systems (NexSys) programme.
The Pathfinder project was developed following the successful introduction of initiatives such the TFI Local Link Kerry bus services. The services were developed in consultation with Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance and several other local partners and were used over 46,000 times last year, bringing people of all ages to work, to shop, to meet friends, and explore the peninsula without needing a car.
“The survey will inform how we can expand on the success of these, but participation is vital, and every journey really does count,” Deirdre added.
“We are delighted to have Solar Beo on board as a partner who have generously sponsored our fabulous prize of either an electric bike or a 2kW Solar PV system for your home,” she said.
Managing Director of Solar Beo, Ciarán Murphy, said they were delighted to support such a worthwhile project.
Solar Beo are specialist domestic, commercial, and agricultural contractors in solar PV, battery management systems and EV charging units.
“Our company is all about helping people make the transition to renewable energy and we have seen firsthand the potential saving that solar PV panels can offer our customers while also reducing their carbon footprint” Ciarán said.
“We are thrilled to give our support to the Dingle Peninsula Pathfinder Project which is perfectly aligned with our ethos and will make a big difference to people’s quality of life, those living here and our very welcome visitors,” he added.
To participate in the survey and be in with a chance of winning the prize, go to www. dinglehub.com/projects/sustainability/ transport (over 18s only). Closing date, 30th June 2024. See advert in this issue for further information.
Le páirt a ghlacadh sa suirbhé agus a bheith istigh le seans chun an duais a bhuachaint, tabhair cuairt ar www.dinglehub.com/ projects/sustainability/transport (daoine os cionn 18 amháin). Dáta dúnta, 30ú Meitheamh 2024. Féach ar an bhfógra san eagrán seo le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais.

Lios Póíl i gCluiche Ceannais Sóisir Chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2024
Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh
Bhí ard-dheireadh seachtaine ag CLG Lios Póil agus a lucht leanta i gCill na Martra, Múscraí Thiar, Co. Chorcaí le linn Chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2024. D’imríomar trí chluiche, le bua maith réamhbhabhta sa Chraobh Shóisir ar an Satharn mar thús againn, Lios Póil 3-14, Laochra Loch Lae 1-09. Tá Na Laochra ana-dhílis don Chomórtas, agus blas breá iarthar Bhéal Feirste ar a gcanúint, agus an Ghaelainn á lábhairt le fonn acu. C. Leathcheannais: Bua maith eile ar an nDomhnach againn in aghaidh na nDéiseach, Lios Póil 4-18, An Seanphobal 1-07. Cluiche Ceannais: Thuigeamar go mbeadh dúshlán mór romhainn sa chluiche ceannais in aghaidh Naomh Muire na Rosann, Dún na nGall, agus b’shin mar a tharla. Thosnaíomar go mall i gcoinne na gaoithe, is 1-7, 0-3 an scór leathama; toisc imreoirí óga ’bheith traochta lena 3ú cluiche le trí lá. Scéalta Ón bPobalscoil
Turas na hIdirbhliana - Camino de Santiago Ó thús na bliana, bhí formhór do bhliain a ceathair ag tnúth go mór le dul ar an Camino de Santiago sa Spáinn ag deireadh na bliana, agus cé gur bhraith sé i bhfad uainn i gcónaí, ar deireadh thiar thall, ar an gcéad lá de mí Mheitheamh , bhailíomar ár gcuid brógaí reatha agus stócaí siulóide agus ar aghaidh linn go dtí an Spáin!
Thosnaíomar maidin Déardaoin i Portomarin lán le fuinneamh agus shiúlamar 24.7k, le cúpla stad ar an slí, go Palas de Rei. Ar an Aoine shiúlamar 31k go Arzua, lá fíor fhada a bhí i gceist ach ní baol dúinn é, toisc go raibh sos againn Dé Satharn ag siopadóireacht agus faire timpeall na cathrach A Coruña. Siúlamar 21k ansan isteach go Santiago linn don lá deirneach, agus cé go raibh sé ag báisteach cuid is mó den am agus sinn ag siúl tharais na trí lá , níor chuir sé isteach orainn ach bfhiú é an óiche deirneach a chaitheamh i Santiago, nuair a thánaig an ghrian amach dúinn. Chaitheamar maidin dé Luan ag faire timpeall an bhaile mór Santiago agus ar aghaidh linn abhaile arís. Turas mothúchánach a bhí i gceist, i slite difriúla, agus gabhaimid buíochas le John Ó Flannúra, Máire Ruiséal, Mary Jo Buidhléir, Michelle Uí h-Ainiféin, Eoin Ó Gealbháin agus Muiris Mac Gearailt as teacht linn ag am chomh deacair dóibh féin. Bhí an deis againn coinneal a lasadh in Ardeaglais Santiago do Bhrenda Uí Chathaisigh, beannacht Dé lena hanam. Tharraing an turas le chéile sinn go léir agus bhaineamar go léir sult ollmhór as….
Buen Camino!
Siúlóid Gaisce
Bhí grúpa daltaí san idirbhliain ag obair go dian dícheallach i rith na bliana chun an gradam Gaisce a bhaint amach. Sé an rud atá i gceist leis an ngradam ná scileanna nua a fhorbairt agus dul chun cinn pearsanta a dhéanamh. Tá trí chatagóir ann a bhí ar na daltaí a chomhlíonadh, obair phobail, aclaíocht áineasa, agus scil phearsanta. Chun críoch a chur leis an
gcúrsa bhí orthu siúl ó Thrá Lí go dtí an Com agus fanacht ann thar oíche. An lá dár gcionn thugadar aghaidh ar an mbóthar arís agus shiúladar ón gCom go Annascáil. Ba é páirt don ‘Kerry Camino’ a bhí á dhéanamh acu agus idir an dá lá shiúladar 33 km san iomlán. Bhí dhá lá dúthlánacha ann ach bhaineadar an- thaitneamh as, go háirithe agus iad ag rósta na leamhacháin sa thráthnóna. Éacht iontach bainte amach acu, sár jab!
Oíche Na hIdirbhliana
Agus sinn ag fágáil slán, brónach leis an 6ú bhliain an tseachtain seo, bhí ócáid álainn dheireadh na bliana ag ceathair le Oíche na hIdirbhliana ar an Déardaoin. Oíche a bhí i gceist chun siúl siar ar an méid imeachtaí difriúla agus spraoiúil a tharla i rith na bliana , a bhí eagraithe ag na múinteoirí John Ó Flannúra agus Tomás Ó Bheaglaíoch, ach cuirthe i láthair ag ár sár daltaí Niamh Nic Dhomhnaill agus Cian Ó Gallchobhair. Bhí taispeántas rince le tionlacann bosca ceoil den scoth againn ó Katie Ní Éanacháin agus Hannah Ní Ghrainbhéil, agus amhrán bhinn ó Mairéad Ní Dhubhaigh le tionlacann ar an bpiano ó Aisling Ní Dhubhaigh. Chomh maith le siúl siar a dhéanamh ar na heachtraí i rith an bhliain, bhronnadh gradaim ar dhaoine dos na rudaí difriúla ar nós gradaim fiontar, corpoideachas, ceol , gaisce, obair phobail, press pass, dalta an ranga, dalta na bliana agus ar uile. Bronnadh dalta na bliana 2024 ar Katie Ní Éanacháin. Chríochnaigh bliain a ceathair go hoifigiúl an Luain ina dhiadh sin, le lá grianmhar spraoiúil i “Jamie Knox” ach ar an iomlán, sár oíche, mothúchánach a bhí ann agus ceapaim go n-aontóidh an bliain ar fad liom gur bhliain den scoth a bhí i gceist, agus braithfimid uainn é an bhliain seo chugainn!
Go raibh maith agaibh as an mbliain a chaitheamh linn, tá siúl againn gur bhain sibh taitneamh as! Slán go fóill uainn, ó Niamh, Katie agus Mairéad!

Annascaul Allotments
Apparently, arugula (also known as Rocket) was a valued green in ancient Rome, where it was celebrated in poetry and prose for its effects on mind and body. Unfortunately, it’s far less popular today than its cousins spinach and kale, even though arugula may be the healthiest green of all.
Arugula was brought to North America by British colonists before the founding of the United States. It waited in relative obscurity, except in traditional Italian American cuisine, until it gained some popularity as a culinary ingredient in the 1990s. Restaurants wanting to broadcast a more gourmet vibe started including arugula in salads (replacing or enhancing romaine and iceberg lettuce). And lately, it’s become a popular topping for pizza and flatbread.
Arugula is a leafy green in the brassica family, which includes other cruciferous veggies like cauliflower, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and bok choy. The name “cruciferous” — cross-forming — refers to the shape made by the four petals
of their flowers.
Like its cruciferous cousins, it is a nutritional powerhouse. A 100-gram serving (about two cups, packed very loosely) will provide the following:
25 calories - 3.7 grams of carbohydrates -2.6 grams of protein - 1.6 grams of fibre -17% of the daily value (DV) of vitamin C -12% DV of calcium - 8% DV of iron - 8% DV of potassium90% DV of vitamin K1 - 24% DV of folate - 13% DV of vitamin A
Arugula has the highest level of anti-oxidants in the entire brassica family; especially kaempferol, which is highly anti-inflammatory, and has been shown to interfere with many signaling pathways required for cancer cells to survive.
Nitratesfrom animal products are problematic for health, but nitrates are excellent when they come from fruits and vegetables. Your body converts the plant-based nitrates into nitric oxide gas, which does a lot of great things, including helping your cardiovascular system operate at peak capacity.
Athletes seeking top performance have been known to drink beet juice before competitions, considering it a kind of legal doping. It turns out that while beet juice is, in fact, high in nitric oxide-producing nitrates, it pales in comparison to arugula, which has the highest levels ever measured in a common food. Another group of beneficial compounds you’ll get from arugula are isothiocyanates, which are formed from sulfur-containing molecules in cruciferous vegetables known as glucosinolates.
Raw arugula has some of the highest amounts of glucosinolates of any cruciferous veggie, rivaled only by the also-spicy mustard green (and topped only by the condiments horseradish and wasabi)
A 2016 study looked at the effects of arugula and other vegetables on the levels of nitric oxide (a gas that acts as a signaling molecule, telling blood vessels to dilate and thus regulating blood pressure) in healthy adults. Arugula performed like a true star — consumption of it led to a sixfold increase in nitric oxide levels.
Recent tests indicate that drinking arugula juice can help mitigate the damage caused by chemotherapy drugs by speeding up and increasing the body's ability to detox. Studies have also shown that Arugula can help balance blood sugar, so benefitting people with type 2 diabetes. Oh, and it's an aphrodisiac! So, I found that article to be really eye opening! And I have started to sow thousands of rocket seeds....
We are currently growing 2 different kinds of rocket in our polytunnel, personally, I love it. Our Allotments market is at Hannafin's this Sunday from 2.30. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Solar Systems
Tom Kennedy
• Coimeád súil amach d’Fhéilire an tSamhraidh, a bheidh ag teacht go luath!
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
• In éineacht le Féile an tSamhraidh beidh imeachtaí iontacha do dhaoine óga á reachtáil againn. Beidh seo á fhógairt go luath againn!
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Deiseanna / Job opportunities
Bíonn éagsúlacht iontach le postanna agus Gaelainn mar chuid dóibh, seo daoibh cúpla post dóibh siúd a bhfuil deis uaibh (tuilleadh ar www.peig.ie):
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
• Teagascóirí Ollscoile - Ollscoil Mhá Nuad
• Oifigigh Forbartha – Tuismitheoirí na Gaeltachta
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
• Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga - Cathair Saidhbhín
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

It’s All In The Mind: The Will of the People
Orla SmythWhen so much seems beyond our control in these turbulent times of change and dissent, the right to cast our vote gives us a chance to influence policies and make our collective voices heard at a local and international level. The people we elect reflect and represent us as a nation - our shared beliefs and ideologies and our vision for the future and while we do not all have the same opinions or think along the same political lines, we can endeavour to find common ground and move away from a polarised world of alternative facts and alienating rhetoric. In western culture we are increasingly driven by the desire for comfort and convenience and security. We are conditioned to believe that no cost should be spared in the pursuit of these needs and the world should be aligned to our desires. In the service of comfort, convenience and security we are willing to blow the tops off mountains, destroy forests, allow plastic islands to float in our oceans, destroy other cultures that do not align with our value system, turn our backs on those who are crying out for help. Politicians, wealthy power brokers and others who manage the commercial , industrial and technological sectors of society are proud to uphold the premise that no price is too high to pay in the preservation and cultivation of our comfort, convenience and security.
In view of the chaos, fear and uncertainty of our times, maybe the time has come to reassess our core values and aspirations as a democratic society and question whether we want to continue down the path of greed, individualization and delusion or if we can re imagine an alternative future for our country. ‘Every country has the government it deserves’ -Joseph de Maistre.
The following is an excerpt from a speech by Robert Kennedy in 1968:
‘Too much and for too long we seem to have surrendered personal excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product now is billions of dollars a year but that GNP counts as air pollution, cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage, accounts for special locks on our doors and jails for people who break them. It counts the destruction of the redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder and chaotic sprawl. It counts nepal and nuclear warheads and armoured cars and police to fight the
riots in our cities. It counts television programmes which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children. Yet the GNP does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages or the intelligence of public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom or our learning, neither our compassion or our devotion. It measures everything it should except that which makes life worthwhile’
Before casting your vote in the elections, pause for a moment and reflect on what really matters as an individual, as a member of the human race and as a citizen of planet Earth - make your vote not only an act of will but an act of love.

Film Review:
Furiosa : A Mad Max Saga
Tom Ó Neachtain
Furiosa : A Mad Max Saga, is a new post-apocalyptic action-film. As the name would suggest, the film is set in the same desert wasteland as the previous Mad Max films, where nature and society have been long forgotten, and car-worshipping cannibal hordes roam the land. This film acts as a prequel/spin-off from the previous film in this universe, Mad Max Fury Road, giving us the backstory of stand-out side-character Furiosa. The film follows Furiosa, who as a young girl is taken from her oasis-esque home, The Green Place, by the brutal tyrant Dementus. The story charts Furiosa’s attempts to stay alive and return home amid the political tension between Dementus’ biker horde and the equally tyrannical Immortan Joe. As with the previous Mad Max films, this really isn’t for everyone. This film is violent, discomforting, and paints a depressingly grim vision of man-kind’s future post-nuclear war. The great achievement of this series has been finding the beauty and hope in this nightmarish landscape.
Fury Road is regarded by many, myself included, as one of the greatest action-films ever made, if not the greatest. PHDs could be written on how meticulously crafted, frenetic and heart-stopping the car-chases featured in Fury Road were. The creators have taken a different route with Furiosa, with its story focusing less on wall-to-wall action
Comhghairdeas to Máire Ní Shuilleabháin who is the recipient of the Gradam Uí Mhaolcatha, Sixth Year Student of the Year, at Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory. Máire exemplifies the ethos of Meán Scoil being courteous, kind and hardworking and is an excellent role model.
Máire was presented with award by Meán Scoil's co-founder, Mrs Sheila Mulcahy.
Wishing Máire and all the Leaving Certs the Best of Luck in their exams.
and more on world-building and characterdynamics. It was a necessary change to the formula but the results aren’t quite as rewarding. There are two absolutely showstopping actionsequences featured here, but aside from those the film is overly talky, and the story lacks much drive pushing it forward.
The film is misguided in other elements as well. CGI was used to make the actress for young Furiosa, Alyla Browne, look more like her adult counterpart, Anya Taylor-Joy. This shows surprising shortsightedness from the film-makers, as they are developing the technology behind deepfakes and the making of digital replicas of actors for no real purpose. However, aside from that questionable decision, the craftsmanship of the film-makers and the world they have created is incredible. Between the remarkable imagination in the set and costume design, the gorgeously shot locations, the politics, the slang, and the strong cast of characters, Furiosa maintains Mad Max’s legacy as one of the most detailed and expansive worlds ever imagined on film.
Furiosa : A Mad Max Saga can’t escape the tall shadow of its predecessors, but it’s still a Mad Max film. All of the vehicular carnage, memorable characters, and raw imagination in the worldbuilding that we’ve come to expect are still here, showing that there are many more stories to be told in this desert hellscape.

mo Thóin agus Scéalta Eile le Pádraic Breathnach foilsithe ag Cló Iar-Chonnacht
‘An caidreamh a dheineann daoine le daoine eile is cás le Pádraic Breathnach san saothar seo - an chéad chnuasach nua gearrscéalta dá chuid le beagnach fiche bliain.
Caidreamh ina thús nó ina dheireadh, caidreamh á chothú agus caidreamh á scrios, caidreamh folláin agus caidreamh míshláintiúil.
Seo díolaim scéalta a bhfuil casadh chun an dorchadais le sonrú go láidir iontu: fir dhrúisiúla, mná míshásta, tuismitheoirí atá imníoch agus páistí atá míbhuíoch, daoine atá ag iarraidh an dubh a chur ina gheal ar dhaoine eile, agus gan a fhios acu go bhfuil an chluain á cur orthu féin.
Leabhar é ar furasta gruaim a shamhlú leis ach a bhfuil an solas ina orlaí tríd.’ - Cló Iar-Chonnacht

Breandán Mac GearailtTá na haon duine atá ag tabhairt fés na toghcháin ina mbeirt, iad ag greadadh an bóthair agus ag súil go mbeidh an lá leo. Gan amhras tás agat cé atá ag rith sa dá thoghchán, áitiúil agus Eorpach. I gcás na ndaoine atá ag tabhairt fén dtoghchán Eorpach tá liosta fada acu ann, scata go bhfuil beirt ó pháirtithe agus daoine ná fuil aon phairtí acu olc ná maith. Is léir go mbaineann siad ar fad sólás as a bheith ag dul ó thigh go tigh nó ó bhaile mór go baile mór. I gcás an deiscirt tá tuairim mhaith agam cé a roghnófar agus an dála céanna sa réigiún lastuaigh dúinn. Tá daoine a chuaidh isteach an babhta deireannach ag súil go mbeidh ádh an mhadra rua leo. N’fheadar, ach tá baichle beag agus measaim go mbfhearr dóibh fanacht ‘ge baile an babhta seo. Tógann sé laetheannta na vótaí a chómhaireamh i dtíortha go bhfuil daonra mór ionta agus líon mór iarrthóirí ar an liosta. Ní mar sin a bheidh againne. Ar an Satharn beidh gártha bua, agus púsaíl shaonta i gcás na n-iomathóirí ná éirigh leo sna toghcháin áitiúla.
Caithfear a thuiscint gur le dea-ghníomhartha a chur i bhfearas a bhíonn furmhór na n-iomathóirí á dtoghadh. Ceapann daoine gur saol ‘n leisce a leanann na toghcháin áitiúla, ar m’anam nach ea, mar beidh daoine ar an nguthán ló is d’oíche agus a ghalar féin ar gach duine acu. Mura n-éiríonn leat iad a shásamh beidh cuid bheag acu so go mbeidh conach ortha agus fógróidh siad an comhairleoir bocht dtí an bpoll is íochtaraí in Ifreann. Má dheineann comhairleoir a mhíle dicheall tuigfidh fear na faidhbe dhó. Caithfead a rá gur bhaineas an- shásamh as mo laetheannta fada, deich mbliana fichead ar an Údarás agus ar an gComhairle. Ní ologón ar fad é ach tá slite ar theacht i dtír ar fhadhb ach córas cliste tuiscionach a chur i bhfeidhm.
Guím gach ádh ar gach duine a chuir a ainm ós chomhair an phobail. An Bhó agus an gamhain, an Caora agus an t-Uan
Níl aon lagú ar an bpraghas atá ar na buaibh is na gamhna, cinn bliana agus i gcás na gcaorach tá an-airgead ar uain, ach is beag sa cheanntar seo go mbeadh uain 40 nó 50 Kg. I bhfad as. Tá airgead ar chaoire bliana agus féachann sé go leanfaidh an praghas maith. Gan dabht bíonn clithireacht deirtear i monarcain feola- n’fheadar, is beag comhlacht a raghadh bóthar na cubalála mar bhéarfaí ortha. Ach tá súil agam ná beidh aon lúb ar lár i gcás aon duine agaibh.
Rud gur ceart a lua na gur tír shaibhir Éirinn an lae inniu agus is dócha gur dea-scéala é sin ach sa tsaol atá againn n’fheadarís cén cor coise a cuirfí fúinn. Dála an scéil táimíd siar go maith i gcás truailliú uisce agus aeir agus leisce tabhairt fén ngás a threascairt. Cuirtear clais airgid ortha siúd ná fuil ag comhlíonadh dlithe an Chomhargaidh. Tiocfar as.

Ar an ndeire seachtaine seo caite tharla cúpla barrthuisle. An chéad cheann ná go mbuaidh Corcaigh ar Dhún na nGall. ’Sort Míorúilt’, arsa fear eolach amháin. Cé a déarfadh é. Nár thárla a leithéid i gcás iománaithe Chorcaí chomh maith. An bhfuil daghadh draíochta acu? A chonach san ortha. Ceann eile, bhí ard chluiche idir Dhoire agus Árd Mhacha. Bhí buachaillí Árd Mhacha tofa ar fad. Ní fhágadar thoir ná thiar ar na Doirigh bhochta é. Ard chluiche.
Bhuaidh Ciarraí go bog. Uaireanta thosnaíodh an ‘ping pong’ a chuirfeadh an gumh dearg ort, ach scaoileadar uatha é tréis tamaill. Fuair Brian Ó Beaglaoi trí phoinnte agus fuair Tomás Ó Súilleabháin a phoinnte agus d’imir go maith. Bhí daoine á ra ná raibh Ciarraí ag scóráil aon bháide ach chuir laoch Fhossa, Diarmaid Ó Clúmháin crot eile ar an scéal, ghnóthaigh sé dhá bháide agus pointe nó dhó. Sin é an fear agat.
